- 0:45Speaker 2: your four and zero Minnesota Vikings are headed to London
- 0:49Speaker 2: to take on an old enemy and Aaron Rodgers and
- 0:52Speaker 2: the Jets. The Jets, the Jets, the Jets. Guys, we
- 0:56Speaker 2: got a killer guests this week. To help us break
- 0:58Speaker 2: it all down. We brought in one of the biggest
- 1:01Speaker 2: Jets fans we know. Uh. He is the host of
- 1:05Speaker 2: the wildly popular KFC Radio. You can find him on
- 1:10Speaker 2: all of his socials at KFC Barstool, he's a senior
- 1:13Speaker 2: member of the barstool staff. Ladies and gentlemen. Kevin Clancy
- 1:18Speaker 2: is going to join us to talk about Sam Darnold,
- 1:20Speaker 2: to talk about the weird, Aaron Rodgers, Jets history, Vikings history,
- 1:26Speaker 2: and we even get into a little Carl Anthony Towns,
- 1:29Speaker 2: Nick's Timberwolve's talk. This one was a ton of fun.
- 1:33Speaker 2: I think, as I always think, that you are going
- 1:37Speaker 2: to love it, and if you did like it, subscribe
- 1:39Speaker 2: to it. It would help us enjoy the show. Guys,
- 1:46Speaker 2: the Recket Recket. I here we are here with Kevin Clancy.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Hey man, thank you for joining the show.
- 2:00Speaker 3: What's up, dude, Let's do it.
- 2:02Speaker 2: This is a weird emotional week. I think for fans.
- 2:07Speaker 2: If four years ago you'd have said, hey man, you're
- 2:10Speaker 2: gonna be playing in London, Aaron Rodgers is gonna be
- 2:13Speaker 2: on the Jets. You still hate him, He's gonna be
- 2:15Speaker 2: on the Jets. You're gonna have this weird start even
- 2:17Speaker 2: though you're starting Sam Darnold. Like I think, all the
- 2:21Speaker 2: energy around it is pretty it's almost like the Back
- 2:25Speaker 2: to the Future Biff timeline, Like what are we doing here?
- 2:28Speaker 3: It's like a script?
- 2:29Speaker 4: Man. I mean, I feel like I I never know.
- 2:32Speaker 3: I'd like to walk a mile in a few.
- 2:35Speaker 4: Different fan base his shoes, because sometimes being the loser
- 2:40Speaker 4: side of New York the Mets, Jets, Nicks Islanders, it
- 2:44Speaker 4: feels like not only are we always losing, but it's
- 2:46Speaker 4: always dramatic and always like the guy that we traded
- 2:52Speaker 4: is the one who came back to hit the home
- 2:54Speaker 4: run against us, or you know, the coach we bet
- 2:57Speaker 4: we missed on went on to coach this team to
- 2:59Speaker 4: blah blah, And it's like, how do these Does this
- 3:02Speaker 4: happen to everybody?
- 3:03Speaker 3: Or is it really just me? Or like it can't
- 3:06Speaker 3: always be this dramatic for everyone, is it? But uh so,
- 3:11Speaker 3: I never know.
- 3:11Speaker 4: I'd love to, like, you know, see how how other
- 3:14Speaker 4: people perceive it, But lord, I know that I'm always like,
- 3:17Speaker 4: I don't know. I feel like my sports life has
- 3:19Speaker 4: taken twenty years off my actual life just because of
- 3:23Speaker 4: how much I put into it and how much I
- 3:25Speaker 4: don't get out of it no matter what we seem
- 3:28Speaker 4: to do.
- 3:29Speaker 2: I'm fascinated with fan basis psychology too, and I think
- 3:33Speaker 2: ours are so different. But the one place where that
- 3:38Speaker 2: Venn diagram you know, crosses over is neither of us
- 3:43Speaker 2: have won anything in forever and what that does to
- 3:47Speaker 2: your brain and how that makes you perceive every moment
- 3:51Speaker 2: for us. I said this on a show a couple
- 3:52Speaker 2: of weeks ago. Vikings like to act like they're Charlie
- 3:55Speaker 2: Brown about to kick the football and get like that's
- 3:58Speaker 2: who they pretend they are, and like that, the giving
- 4:00Speaker 2: up like oh, I've got no chance. But every time
- 4:02Speaker 2: that you give them a morsel of hope, like this
- 4:05Speaker 2: Sam Donald thing. I mean, we had people wearing astronaut
- 4:09Speaker 2: costumes to games after two Dobbs performances last year. You
- 4:13Speaker 2: give this team hope. Yeah, I'm telling you that Sam
- 4:17Speaker 2: Donald has the coolest path to a statue you could
- 4:20Speaker 2: ever imagine if he takes.
- 4:22Speaker 4: You know, it is what do they say in Shawshank,
- 4:24Speaker 4: You know, hope is one of the most powerful things.
- 4:27Speaker 4: I think hope is one of the worst things, because
- 4:30Speaker 4: that's you know, I'll say this.
- 4:32Speaker 3: I believe.
- 4:34Speaker 4: Being in a city where the other half has won
- 4:39Speaker 4: countless World Series and Super Bowls makes the New York
- 4:43Speaker 4: experience pretty unique, and I think it's one that almost
- 4:47Speaker 4: gives us the edge over you know, who has the
- 4:49Speaker 4: worst sports life, because I you know, if if a team,
- 4:54Speaker 4: if a city that just has one set of teams loses,
- 4:56Speaker 4: you all lose together. You all go to work together miserable,
- 4:59Speaker 4: you're all happy together with it goes well in New York.
- 5:01Speaker 4: It's like everywhere I go when I was a kid
- 5:04Speaker 4: in school, when I'm at the office, people that I'm
- 5:07Speaker 4: dating just my friend group, like there's always one half
- 5:11Speaker 4: or really more like you know, seventy five percent just
- 5:13Speaker 4: laughing at you and getting on you. And so I
- 5:16Speaker 4: always make that argument. But there's one fan base when
- 5:19Speaker 4: I usually shut my mouth, and it's Minnesota fans because
- 5:22Speaker 4: you guys have had it pretty tough. There's a couple
- 5:24Speaker 4: things in Pittsburgh and Minnesota's up there for like, I
- 5:27Speaker 4: respect you. You're in the trenches with us. It's a tough,
- 5:31Speaker 4: tough existence.
- 5:32Speaker 2: And there's a secret hidden part that people who aren't
- 5:35Speaker 2: from here, like we actually have that because no one
- 5:38Speaker 2: wants to live in Wisconsin. Yeah, so, and the Twin
- 5:41Speaker 2: Cities are right on the border. So you you do
- 5:44Speaker 2: go to work and you see.
- 5:46Speaker 5: You do get that that hackers, Oh god, you're just
- 5:49Speaker 5: the worst person, the worst person at your office, just
- 5:53Speaker 5: sitting there with that fat breeze smile on their face.
- 5:57Speaker 2: It's just it's just terrible. Yeah, So not a lot
- 6:00Speaker 2: of people recognize that, But yeah.
- 6:02Speaker 4: I would have thought that you guys were all kind
- 6:04Speaker 4: of in the same boat together. So if you can,
- 6:06Speaker 4: if you can understand that side of it, you might
- 6:09Speaker 4: be up there for for worst ever because lord knows,
- 6:13Speaker 4: you know, you've lost just as many games as we
- 6:15Speaker 4: have and in everything. I also, I think in recent
- 6:21Speaker 4: years I used to have a theory about sports that
- 6:24Speaker 4: there are certain teams that just are not gonna win,
- 6:27Speaker 4: just like they're never gonna do it. And in recent
- 6:30Speaker 4: years it's kind of started to crumble. I wonder if
- 6:32Speaker 4: that's just because of how money has changed, you know,
- 6:35Speaker 4: revenue sharing and all that.
- 6:36Speaker 3: Big cities, little cities.
- 6:38Speaker 4: But I used to walk around being like, you know,
- 6:40Speaker 4: like the Sacramento Kings are just never going to win
- 6:42Speaker 4: the title because they're the Sacramento Kings, you know.
- 6:46Speaker 3: But then like the Bucks come along and win it,
- 6:48Speaker 3: you know.
- 6:49Speaker 4: And and I think about like football, where it's like,
- 6:52Speaker 4: to me, there used to be certain teams, you're just
- 6:55Speaker 4: never gonna win it because of who your.
- 6:57Speaker 3: Name is and what your what your reputation is. And
- 7:01Speaker 3: but I don't know.
- 7:02Speaker 4: Then I start to see these, you know, certain teams
- 7:04Speaker 4: pull it out, and it's like, all right, maybe maybe
- 7:06Speaker 4: there is hope.
- 7:07Speaker 2: I don't know the other thing that I think is
- 7:09Speaker 2: interesting about that because I do think you're right. I
- 7:12Speaker 2: think sports are so entrenched in history and narrative building
- 7:18Speaker 2: and all these things that like and your fan base
- 7:22Speaker 2: is another great example of this, a couple of flicks
- 7:25Speaker 2: of the ball a different direction. And like the Vikings
- 7:28Speaker 2: are in four Super Bowls. If they win three of those,
- 7:32Speaker 2: they are not. They are spoken about because of how
- 7:35Speaker 2: old of an organization they are and all the titles
- 7:37Speaker 2: they won before the merger. They are the Cowboys, the
- 7:41Speaker 2: Packers or Sailors. And you guys, had you had any
- 7:46Speaker 2: sort of like, look, the Packers are a great example.
- 7:50Speaker 2: They win early, they're horrific forever. Then they win one
- 7:54Speaker 2: with farv and one with Rogers. If you guys that
- 7:56Speaker 2: have somehow pulled one out in the eighties and nineties
- 8:00Speaker 2: and one out in the two thousands, I think purely
- 8:02Speaker 2: because of the name thing, and how big of a
- 8:05Speaker 2: deal that was from a narrative standpoint. I think that's
- 8:09Speaker 2: how close you guys are to also being a team
- 8:12Speaker 2: that is spoken about in a different historical way.
- 8:16Speaker 4: Well, that run the Sanchez years with the back to
- 8:20Speaker 4: back AFC championships, where that's kind of become a joke
- 8:24Speaker 4: in New York because for so long we were like
- 8:26Speaker 4: back to back AAFC championships, man back to back AAFC championships,
- 8:29Speaker 4: you know, and then it was like ten years removed
- 8:32Speaker 4: from that, and it was like, you can't be talking
- 8:34Speaker 4: about almost making it, you know, ten years ago. But
- 8:38Speaker 4: those you know, those are things like that game against
- 8:41Speaker 4: the Steelers that they lost, they should have won, and
- 8:43Speaker 4: then they would have even just making it changes it
- 8:45Speaker 4: changes the narrative.
- 8:46Speaker 3: You know.
- 8:46Speaker 4: It's like because people respect getting there. I think once
- 8:49Speaker 4: you get there, you know, you look at the Patriots,
- 8:51Speaker 4: like even the big bad Patriots dynasty lost a bunch
- 8:54Speaker 4: because once you get there, the game just breaks.
- 8:57Speaker 3: However, getting there is its own little.
- 9:00Speaker 4: Badge of honor and uh, and it makes all the difference.
- 9:04Speaker 4: And I see what you're saying. But at the same time,
- 9:07Speaker 4: also it's like there's also this feeling to me of
- 9:08Speaker 4: like just institutionalized losing, where yeah, a couple of balls
- 9:13Speaker 4: break here or there, but for the most part, how
- 9:16Speaker 4: how am I in the same.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Boat every year?
- 9:20Speaker 4: Like, Yeah, the coach didn't work out, the quarterback didn't
- 9:23Speaker 4: work out, the penalties are still happening, the holdouts are
- 9:27Speaker 4: still happening, the injuries are still happening.
- 9:29Speaker 3: It's like sometimes it feels like, you know.
- 9:32Speaker 2: It's almost like a weird sports purgatory that somebody hilariously
- 9:36Speaker 2: trying to pack you in.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Yeah, it's sports.
- 9:39Speaker 4: Is the closest I get to believing in, you know, superstitions, karma,
- 9:42Speaker 4: black magic, all that sort of stuff. And what I
- 9:44Speaker 4: really usually end up coming to the realization is it's
- 9:47Speaker 4: none of that.
- 9:48Speaker 3: It's your ownership.
- 9:49Speaker 4: It's it's you know, because you change, you change your
- 9:53Speaker 4: your gms, you change your man your coaches, change your players.
- 9:56Speaker 4: The one thing at the top that always stays the
- 9:58Speaker 4: same has a big being to do with what goes.
- 10:01Speaker 2: On, you know, Speaking of things that our audience is
- 10:03Speaker 2: I'm tired of hearing me talk about. I go back
- 10:06Speaker 2: to Eddie de Bartelow and the forty nine ers and
- 10:09Speaker 2: the fact that they he treated his players and his
- 10:12Speaker 2: organizations in his organization in a certain way, and then
- 10:15Speaker 2: Robert Kraft learns from him. I'm exactly with you. I
- 10:18Speaker 2: don't think it's an accident when team are perennially relevant,
- 10:24Speaker 2: maybe not even competitive, But like, I don't think it's
- 10:26Speaker 2: an accident that the Steelers are Steelers kind of always
- 10:31Speaker 2: hanging around. They like everybody goes well, they only had
- 10:34Speaker 2: these many coaches. It's yeah, because their ownership in a
- 10:37Speaker 2: healthy way values consistency. That is the thing we finally
- 10:40Speaker 2: have in Minnesota with the Wolfs. Is like, because that's
- 10:44Speaker 2: hard to say as a sports fan, and I know
- 10:46Speaker 2: we've felt it with some of the teams. I know
- 10:48Speaker 2: you have, but to be able to sit there and go, oh,
- 10:50Speaker 2: I think they elevate winning a title next to all
- 10:55Speaker 2: the other stuff that matters and running a business. And
- 10:58Speaker 2: they are the sort of owners who recognize if we
- 11:02Speaker 2: do win a title, all that other goes through the room.
- 11:05Speaker 3: That's so crazy.
- 11:06Speaker 4: It's like you're worried about money and tickets and reputation.
- 11:11Speaker 3: And like whatever else, and winning cares all of that. Man.
- 11:16Speaker 4: And I don't know what it is, but it's like
- 11:18Speaker 4: you just keep picking the wrong coach, you know, like
- 11:22Speaker 4: you just keep picking the wrong GM although you know,
- 11:26Speaker 4: like there's always little glimmers of hope, and right now
- 11:28Speaker 4: you feel like maybe there is one. But it's like, oh,
- 11:31Speaker 4: you can't fire an owner, man, like get stuck with them.
- 11:34Speaker 4: It's just we want I'm doing it with the Mets
- 11:36Speaker 4: right now.
- 11:36Speaker 3: In baseball.
- 11:37Speaker 4: It's like we had the Willponds were our owners in baseball,
- 11:39Speaker 4: and they were the worst. They're the absolute worst ever
- 11:41Speaker 4: for a big market team. They were so terrible. And
- 11:44Speaker 4: as soon as they're gone and a guy who steps
- 11:46Speaker 4: in with a bunch of money who cares a lot,
- 11:48Speaker 4: everything changed.
- 11:49Speaker 2: You know, all of a sudden, you guys are having
- 11:51Speaker 2: the most fun final game of the season you could
- 11:54Speaker 2: possibly imagine.
- 11:55Speaker 4: I'm just getting ripped in both directions that on Sunday.
- 11:59Speaker 4: On Sunday, Mets had a chance. If they won and
- 12:01Speaker 4: the Diamonbacks lost, it was over. And I was all
- 12:04Speaker 4: coinciding exactly with the fourth quarter of the Jets game.
- 12:09Speaker 4: And I'm just so down about the Jets. I feel
- 12:12Speaker 4: like I time traveled, like we got such a good
- 12:14Speaker 4: taste of the good Rogers and we beat the Patriots
- 12:18Speaker 4: on Prime time, like something, I not only beat them,
- 12:21Speaker 4: stomped them, something I never never even considered as a
- 12:25Speaker 4: possibility because I mean, we've.
- 12:27Speaker 3: Lost eighteen out of twenty to them.
- 12:29Speaker 4: They always beat us Monday night football, the butt fumble,
- 12:33Speaker 4: the you know, they scored like thirty points in like
- 12:35Speaker 4: three minutes on us once like all of the worst
- 12:37Speaker 4: moments ever, and we turned the tables and I'm like,
- 12:40Speaker 4: oh my god, like it's finally changed. And then you
- 12:43Speaker 4: come in against the Broncos and do like same old
- 12:45Speaker 4: Jets while the Mets have to go through the doubleheader,
- 12:48Speaker 4: and I was just like, Nope, it's.
- 12:50Speaker 3: I thought the sports gods.
- 12:51Speaker 4: Maybe had changed for a second, but I think I'm
- 12:53Speaker 4: in the same boat that I'm always in.
- 12:55Speaker 2: So how do you at this point watching what's happening
- 12:58Speaker 2: in Minnesota, Like, what is the Darnald experience like for
- 13:02Speaker 2: you someone who has been that invested into Jets, Like,
- 13:05Speaker 2: how do you?
- 13:05Speaker 3: I'm so happy for that dude.
- 13:08Speaker 4: I think he is a great reminder that, first of all,
- 13:12Speaker 4: careers can be long and you can't necessarily give up
- 13:16Speaker 4: on certain people. And secondly, I think it is insane
- 13:23Speaker 4: the way we treat rookie quarterbacks on the whole, in
- 13:26Speaker 4: the league, in what.
- 13:27Speaker 3: Other what other profession job?
- 13:30Speaker 4: Yeah, are you expected to step into the absolute hardest
- 13:35Speaker 4: role in all of sports? To me, like hands down
- 13:38Speaker 4: most important and most difficult as a twenty two year
- 13:41Speaker 4: old and just go for every yes, for every one,
- 13:45Speaker 4: Patrick Mahomes, there's a dozen.
- 13:48Speaker 3: Failures, you know, you know, especially with the Jets.
- 13:51Speaker 4: I look at Gino in Seattle and Sam and Minnesota,
- 13:55Speaker 4: and it's like, these are two guys that were talented
- 13:58Speaker 4: enough on a very literal sense on the field, didn't
- 14:02Speaker 4: have a good offensive line, didn't have good weapons, didn't
- 14:05Speaker 4: have good coaching, had atrocious atrocious play calling, had a
- 14:10Speaker 4: terrible locker room situation. Literally, Gino Smith going through fistfights
- 14:15Speaker 4: and broken jaws like absolute madness.
- 14:18Speaker 3: Of course he's not going to succeed.
- 14:20Speaker 4: It's it's it's it's impossible when everything is set in place,
- 14:25Speaker 4: let alone when you're fighting an uphill battle and the
- 14:28Speaker 4: team is like actively working against you.
- 14:31Speaker 3: And and Sam Donald.
- 14:33Speaker 4: Is a good example of a change of scenery where
- 14:35Speaker 4: like I was, I was a big fan of his,
- 14:38Speaker 4: I was a little skewed he like we knew him
- 14:41Speaker 4: a little bit through barstool I wanted him to succeed,
- 14:45Speaker 4: you know, a little bit of rose colored glasses with him.
- 14:47Speaker 3: But it got to the point where as a.
- 14:48Speaker 4: Fan, especially one on a show or on social media,
- 14:52Speaker 4: who you know, keeps it pretty honest and real, I
- 14:54Speaker 4: had to say, like, it's done.
- 14:56Speaker 3: It's just not it's not gonna happen.
- 14:58Speaker 4: And in that moment, I did think it's probably done
- 15:00Speaker 4: for him period, But he was I think he probably
- 15:05Speaker 4: played it perfectly where he didn't have ego, he was
- 15:08Speaker 4: willing to go be a backup, willing to go to
- 15:11Speaker 4: a couple other franchises. Let me just kind of stick
- 15:15Speaker 4: around here and and you know, claw my way back.
- 15:19Speaker 4: And then you're twenty, you know, late twenties, bigger, smarter,
- 15:23Speaker 4: find the right place, and it's like, oh, I can
- 15:27Speaker 4: do this. You know, I have all the weapons or
- 15:30Speaker 4: I have an offensive line. Like of course that makes
- 15:33Speaker 4: a big difference. But sometimes you know, once it once
- 15:35Speaker 4: it fails the way it failed in New York, to
- 15:39Speaker 4: be honest, once I see ghosts, I'm seeing ghosts happened,
- 15:42Speaker 4: it was like.
- 15:43Speaker 3: It's just over.
- 15:44Speaker 4: Like the fan base, the media, we're all gonna you know,
- 15:47Speaker 4: the media is a big part of trying to succeed
- 15:49Speaker 4: in New York.
- 15:50Speaker 3: They just hammer you relentlessly.
- 15:52Speaker 4: You were just gonna constantly have to play against the
- 15:55Speaker 4: Patriots forever in that division. A million reasons why it
- 15:59Speaker 4: was just never gonna work in New York, and I
- 16:01Speaker 4: wasn't sure if it was ever going to pan out anywhere.
- 16:03Speaker 4: And I'm happy to see that it is happening, because
- 16:06Speaker 4: you know, so many other people would flame out in
- 16:08Speaker 4: that spot, give up in that spot, and you know,
- 16:12Speaker 4: to keep your ego in check and keep working, or like,
- 16:15Speaker 4: you know, you'd get out of shape, you'd stop caring,
- 16:17Speaker 4: you'd lose the the the mentality. Like the fact that
- 16:21Speaker 4: he's here and doing it now, you know, tip my
- 16:23Speaker 4: cap to him. It was, you know, never going to
- 16:25Speaker 4: happen here. I wish like we could have just stuck
- 16:28Speaker 4: it out and and had this happen. But I just
- 16:30Speaker 4: don't think think it needed to go somewhere else. I
- 16:33Speaker 4: kind of think that about like I can't believe the
- 16:34Speaker 4: Giants are still doing it with Daniel Jones.
- 16:36Speaker 3: It's like, how many years are you going to give
- 16:39Speaker 3: this guy?
- 16:40Speaker 4: I think the worst thing that happened to him was
- 16:41Speaker 4: that one playoff game, because you just you feel like
- 16:44Speaker 4: you owe him. And I feel like that's almost an
- 16:46Speaker 4: example of a good family of ownership gone wrong, where
- 16:50Speaker 4: the marriages are so loyal and want to be like
- 16:53Speaker 4: the Steelers in a way. But you got to cut
- 16:55Speaker 4: ties at some point. And maybe Daniel Jones will go
- 16:57Speaker 4: somewhere else and do it. But I just feel like
- 16:59Speaker 4: at some point you got know, wing to cut ties
- 17:01Speaker 4: in your current situation. But I'm happy for him, man,
- 17:03Speaker 4: I hope you guys like him.
- 17:04Speaker 2: I think most of the fans, if not every single fan,
- 17:07Speaker 2: is pretty insanely on board at this point. But to me,
- 17:11Speaker 2: what it is, you know, we went through the Kirk
- 17:14Speaker 2: Cousins experience and this is like, no, this isn't even
- 17:18Speaker 2: commentary on him. But I think this interesting thing happens
- 17:21Speaker 2: is when you are the face of a franchise, right,
- 17:26Speaker 2: which is often what you're you know, you're talking about
- 17:29Speaker 2: the pressure, the heap on these rookie quarterbacks, like that's
- 17:31Speaker 2: part of it New York like insanity. So but you
- 17:35Speaker 2: bring a guy like Kirkin, who Kirk is a very
- 17:38Speaker 2: good thrower of the football. He's a very good quarterback,
- 17:41Speaker 2: and you know, if you step back from it, it's
- 17:44Speaker 2: kind of hard to argue he has one of the
- 17:46Speaker 2: more interesting kind of stories without being dramatic or being
- 17:51Speaker 2: but like you go, RG three is this high pick.
- 17:54Speaker 2: He has one of the greatest rookie seasons we ever see, right,
- 17:57Speaker 2: and then he's hurt and then comes Kirk, and and
- 18:00Speaker 2: then they want Kirk, but they don't want Kirk, and
- 18:02Speaker 2: he gets you know, optioned in the way that we've
- 18:05Speaker 2: never seen before, signs the first guaranteed, signs another one,
- 18:09Speaker 2: and then you have the prime time stuff like and
- 18:11Speaker 2: all the narratives about him. It's just a He's a
- 18:13Speaker 2: really interesting story and when you when you bring that
- 18:16Speaker 2: to a team, all of it comes with And I
- 18:19Speaker 2: think everybody here was completely behind him. Like I'm only
- 18:23Speaker 2: speaking on a from a fan based standpoint, right, you
- 18:25Speaker 2: had you had, you had people who were behind him.
- 18:27Speaker 2: But I think it takes a lot to support somebody
- 18:32Speaker 2: like that. And I think one of the things that
- 18:35Speaker 2: Sam Donald is benefiting from is Kirk carried a lot
- 18:39Speaker 2: of expectations and he carried a lot of burden and
- 18:42Speaker 2: weight because of who he is and what he made
- 18:43Speaker 2: and what people expected him. And Sam Donald just kind
- 18:46Speaker 2: of got to walk in as like a guy.
- 18:49Speaker 3: Yeah, the expectations be everything. Man, I'm just a guy.
- 18:54Speaker 2: I'm just a guy with a giant arm.
- 18:56Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, I mean I just I just googled it
- 18:58Speaker 3: while you were talking.
- 18:59Speaker 4: Like when and he when Kirk Cousins is done with
- 19:02Speaker 4: this latest contract, he will have made four hundred and
- 19:05Speaker 4: eleven million dollars four hundred and eleven And it just
- 19:09Speaker 4: goes to show how important that position is. And if
- 19:12Speaker 4: you can throw the football and be a professional quarterback
- 19:15Speaker 4: at all, you will make a boatload. But what do
- 19:18Speaker 4: you have to show for four hundred million dollars and
- 19:21Speaker 4: and that that type of money and that type of story.
- 19:24Speaker 4: You're right, It's just like anybody who comes in and
- 19:27Speaker 4: just plays okay, is gonna get you know.
- 19:32Speaker 2: The let alone, like just slaughtering it. Because what I've
- 19:35Speaker 2: noticed with him is a little bit of this, like
- 19:38Speaker 2: I don't want to say FARV because that's you know,
- 19:40Speaker 2: football sacrilege. He's got a little bit of that. Like
- 19:43Speaker 2: every once in a while he progresses, he progresses, there's
- 19:47Speaker 2: a checkdown and he's like, I'm gonna just put it.
- 19:49Speaker 2: I'm gonna put it down the field. Is that new?
- 19:52Speaker 3: Yeah? I think so.
- 19:53Speaker 4: I mean again, it was so hard to tell because
- 19:56Speaker 4: he was on his back half the time and didn't
- 19:58Speaker 4: have many weapons, and you know, I'm seeing ghosts. Things
- 20:03Speaker 4: kind of like solidified it where it was like I
- 20:05Speaker 4: don't know if he's going through all his progressions and
- 20:07Speaker 4: I don't know if he has the confidence to throw
- 20:09Speaker 4: it downfield.
- 20:09Speaker 3: Yeah, and I don't know if he has the right
- 20:11Speaker 3: oc because.
- 20:12Speaker 4: You know, we're running the ball all the time and
- 20:14Speaker 4: you know, just just conservative, loser type play calling. There
- 20:19Speaker 4: was always even with all of his quarterbacks, with the Geno's,
- 20:22Speaker 4: with the Donald, even with Zach Wilson, there was always
- 20:25Speaker 4: like a throw or a drive where we would get
- 20:30Speaker 4: all excited. He threw like one pass that was thirty
- 20:36Speaker 4: yards down the field, back shoulder perfectly.
- 20:39Speaker 3: Maybe he's the guy, and it's like bro, that was
- 20:42Speaker 3: one mass.
- 20:44Speaker 4: I mean I remember even with Zach Wilson the Chiefs
- 20:47Speaker 4: game that they lost but they got robbed and they
- 20:49Speaker 4: almost beat Mahomes and that was like the last flicker
- 20:52Speaker 4: of hope, like maybe Zach Wilson.
- 20:55Speaker 3: He kind of won the It was like it was
- 20:56Speaker 3: like Gladiator.
- 20:57Speaker 4: He like won the crowd, you know, but then you
- 21:01Speaker 4: just go back to playing like the way these guys
- 21:03Speaker 4: were playing and what I don't think it really was
- 21:05Speaker 4: like that.
- 21:06Speaker 3: There was flashes. There's always flashes.
- 21:09Speaker 4: It's funny, there's a New Ye There's there's always a
- 21:12Speaker 4: New York Daily News cover. They did it for Sanchez,
- 21:15Speaker 4: they did it for Gino, and I think they did
- 21:17Speaker 4: it for Donald definitely, two, maybe three. A Star Is
- 21:21Speaker 4: Born was the headline. All of these guys always had
- 21:25Speaker 4: one game. It was Sanchez, Gino, and maybe one other. Yeah,
- 21:30Speaker 4: Sanchez was kind of like, I mean, he was like
- 21:32Speaker 4: doing it in the playoffs.
- 21:33Speaker 2: Yeah, there's there's an argument to be made that you.
- 21:35Speaker 3: Could have run that with saying yeah, yeah, I mean,
- 21:37Speaker 3: you know, he beat he won.
- 21:39Speaker 4: At that point, he had the most playoff road winds
- 21:42Speaker 4: ever with the four wins.
- 21:43Speaker 3: He had Beaten Brady, he had Beaten Manning, he had beaten.
- 21:46Speaker 4: Phil Rivers, he almost beat Roethlisberger, and then Gino had
- 21:49Speaker 4: like one big game and it was like they just kept
- 21:52Speaker 4: running this Star as Born thing, and it was like it,
- 21:55Speaker 4: you know, it's just the one game, guy, It's one game.
- 21:59Speaker 3: We're just so desperate for it.
- 22:00Speaker 4: So I understand it, but that's what the pressure you know,
- 22:03Speaker 4: it's like a star is born me talking about guys.
- 22:05Speaker 4: I you know, I still know what I'm doing out here.
- 22:08Speaker 2: Yet You've said you've mentioned the media a few times,
- 22:11Speaker 2: which is, you know, I think everybody knows about that.
- 22:15Speaker 2: You know, everybody from you know, Minnesota, Midwest, West Coast,
- 22:19Speaker 2: we all get that. We've heard it. I think it's
- 22:21Speaker 2: a different thing when you're actually there.
- 22:23Speaker 3: I don't think you get it. Yeah, I think you
- 22:25Speaker 3: get it.
- 22:26Speaker 2: But you get it, but you don't get it. So
- 22:28Speaker 2: my question about it is like before Patrick Mahomes walked
- 22:32Speaker 2: into the league, I was, despite my you know, football
- 22:36Speaker 2: disdain for the Green Bay Packers, I was pretty happy
- 22:40Speaker 2: to make the case that Aaron Rodgers might be the
- 22:42Speaker 2: most talented quarterback to ever step on a field. I
- 22:45Speaker 2: thought he had Marino's arm with Steve Young's legs. He's
- 22:50Speaker 2: just a bizarre talent. But in Green Bay he aged
- 22:55Speaker 2: like you know, if you get a shelter dog and
- 22:57Speaker 2: they're like, he's nineteen and he's good most the time,
- 23:00Speaker 2: I'm and then every once while you're like, why is
- 23:01Speaker 2: he growling at that chair? Like that's That's kind of
- 23:05Speaker 2: how he aged in Green Bay. But the thing was
- 23:07Speaker 2: you want to talk about like fan bases, psychology, Green Bay,
- 23:12Speaker 2: for they are the trust fund babies of the like
- 23:18Speaker 2: they this and they all think everybody's out to get
- 23:20Speaker 2: them and You're like, no, no, the the trophy's named
- 23:24Speaker 2: after you.
- 23:24Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean the fact that they're gonna have gone
- 23:27Speaker 4: from what fifteen years or whatever, from far Right into
- 23:31Speaker 4: Rogers right into love. It's like you've never even struggled, man, Like,
- 23:36Speaker 4: no one's got to get you. You've got it, gravy, dude, you.
- 23:38Speaker 2: Know, you don't even know what the word rant means.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Get away, get away from me. But so they there
- 23:45Speaker 2: was this ultimate like how dare you come at Rogers?
- 23:48Speaker 2: And I think we all knew when Rogers got to
- 23:49Speaker 2: New York that you know, that experience changes with the media.
- 23:53Speaker 2: But I'm curious four games in to him actually playing.
- 23:57Speaker 2: I think if you guys would have snuck away with
- 23:59Speaker 2: that Bronco's thing, the narrative would be a lot different
- 24:02Speaker 2: than it is right now. But what is what is
- 24:05Speaker 2: the Aaron Rodgers experience at two and two heading to London.
- 24:09Speaker 4: First of all, you know, it goes back to the injury,
- 24:11Speaker 4: which was one of just the craziest goddamn things ever,
- 24:15Speaker 4: you know, and those are the moments where you feel
- 24:18Speaker 4: like you're cursed as a fan, where it's like, what
- 24:21Speaker 4: he's out for the season, and that really like changed
- 24:27Speaker 4: I think everything, because you couldn't judge him like one
- 24:30Speaker 4: way or the other, you know what I mean. So
- 24:31Speaker 4: it was like the media was kind of waiting to see.
- 24:33Speaker 4: And you know, that first game we got, we got
- 24:36Speaker 4: our asses handed to our to us like it was
- 24:38Speaker 4: not great. But when he broke out against the Pats,
- 24:41Speaker 4: I think that was going to be his like you know,
- 24:45Speaker 4: jumping off point.
- 24:46Speaker 3: And then this game was just so same old Jets,
- 24:49Speaker 3: like sloppy. I mean it was in the rain, maybe
- 24:52Speaker 3: you could throw that out.
- 24:53Speaker 2: But but Broncos might be better. They might be a
- 24:55Speaker 2: little better than people think they are.
- 24:57Speaker 4: Yeah, And but what I noticed was against the Pats.
- 25:03Speaker 3: Like rogers wheeling and dealing. He looked good out there.
- 25:06Speaker 4: Because against the Niners, it was like every time he
- 25:08Speaker 4: ran the ball, I was like, just lide, go.
- 25:11Speaker 3: Down, go down, going, I throw it out of bounds,
- 25:12Speaker 3: you know.
- 25:12Speaker 4: And then by you know, halfway through the Pats came
- 25:14Speaker 4: I was like, no, this guy is like still able
- 25:17Speaker 4: to scramble and really do it. And then it felt
- 25:20Speaker 4: like against the Broncos, it was like a statue.
- 25:22Speaker 2: I think that was a little bit of the weather.
- 25:24Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, that's why I think they're not they're not
- 25:27Speaker 4: killing him as much. I think that pats Win gave
- 25:29Speaker 4: him a little bit of grace.
- 25:30Speaker 2: It'd be funny if they did The Star is Born
- 25:32Speaker 2: for him, forty years old, off the Pats just him
- 25:37Speaker 2: with gray and his beard.
- 25:38Speaker 3: Yeah, that would be funny. I mean, the media is
- 25:40Speaker 3: so interesting.
- 25:41Speaker 4: It's like I remember that for the New York Daily News,
- 25:44Speaker 4: it was a reporter maniche Mehta, who I think eventually
- 25:48Speaker 4: ended up getting fired. He was always very biased and
- 25:52Speaker 4: it was very clear he was just looking for headlines
- 25:54Speaker 4: and followers, and if he liked you, he would you
- 25:58Speaker 4: know right, if he hated you, he would pick you apart.
- 26:01Speaker 4: And I think eventually they like I can't remember what
- 26:03Speaker 4: it was, but they found some dirt on him that
- 26:05Speaker 4: was like, you're actually, you know, not a you know whatever.
- 26:09Speaker 4: The rules of journalism are like you're you know, you're gone,
- 26:12Speaker 4: you're violating them. But it was like in this new
- 26:14Speaker 4: era of I want to go make three hundred and
- 26:16Speaker 4: seventy five million dollars like Tom Brady.
- 26:18Speaker 3: I want to be one hundred million dollar man, like
- 26:19Speaker 3: Stephen A. Smith.
- 26:20Speaker 4: Like you have to build your own following, you have
- 26:22Speaker 4: to have your own opinions. You've got to have talk show,
- 26:25Speaker 4: not just like I'm reporting on the team.
- 26:27Speaker 3: So you know, with the Mets and the Jets, a
- 26:32Speaker 3: little bit of the next but most of the Mets
- 26:34Speaker 3: and the Jets.
- 26:35Speaker 4: Like the papers and the talk radio are always negative.
- 26:40Speaker 4: Is going to get you more attention. Yeah, the Mike
- 26:42Speaker 4: Francises of the world and the mad Dogs of the world.
- 26:44Speaker 4: If you're making fun of the Jets, you know, half
- 26:48Speaker 4: the city's laughing at them. The other half is the
- 26:50Speaker 4: fans who are like they do this to.
- 26:51Speaker 3: Me every year.
- 26:53Speaker 4: It's very rare that they're just like they're good, yeah,
- 26:55Speaker 4: like they're or just like or just like they're okay,
- 26:58Speaker 4: you know, like you're gonna be eight and eight this year,
- 27:00Speaker 4: Like you're okay.
- 27:01Speaker 3: It's fine, you lose some games.
- 27:02Speaker 4: Sometimes it's usually just like this guy is falling, or
- 27:05Speaker 4: we're gonna put all the pressure in the world on
- 27:07Speaker 4: your shoulders.
- 27:09Speaker 3: It's a little different because he's not a rookie. He's
- 27:11Speaker 3: not young.
- 27:12Speaker 4: It's been just a revolving door of either backups or rookies,
- 27:16Speaker 4: so you don't know like what they're capable of. So
- 27:18Speaker 4: this is kind of like I think even the media knows, like,
- 27:21Speaker 4: you can't get crazy. After one game he lost to
- 27:23Speaker 4: the Broncos. We'll see what happens next week. You know,
- 27:25Speaker 4: you lose a couple in a row, they're gonna come out.
- 27:27Speaker 4: But I think right now even the media knows to
- 27:29Speaker 4: give him a little bit.
- 27:30Speaker 3: Of You got to give him a little leeway.
- 27:32Speaker 2: It's interesting though, there was a moment so cause I
- 27:34Speaker 2: watched that the end of that Broncos Jets game, so
- 27:37Speaker 2: when Farv came here after he spent time with you,
- 27:39Speaker 2: and then he came here. Everybody remembers that first season
- 27:43Speaker 2: as kind of this magical run.
- 27:45Speaker 3: Talking about it in Minnesota. Yeah, yeah, well you guys
- 27:48Speaker 3: are like fourteen and two or something.
- 27:49Speaker 2: Right, it was. It was nuts. My dad told me
- 27:52Speaker 2: before that season started, he's like, whatever happens, because we
- 27:56Speaker 2: didn't know Aaron Rodgers was going to exist, right. I
- 27:58Speaker 2: think he'd have thought differently if he thought Aaron Rodgers
- 28:00Speaker 2: was going to exist. But he's like, whatever happens. This
- 28:03Speaker 2: guy can still play, and you're about to play with
- 28:05Speaker 2: their most important guy ever. Well, he's still good. He
- 28:09Speaker 2: goes eat up every minute. But people forget you remember
- 28:13Speaker 2: when when the heat not one, not two, and then
- 28:17Speaker 2: they came out and they lose to the MAVs. Right,
- 28:19Speaker 2: because when you put somebody who the universe revolves around,
- 28:22Speaker 2: when you stick them in the center of a new situation,
- 28:26Speaker 2: I don't think people give enough credit for how long
- 28:29Speaker 2: that takes. And even though Aaron's been there for a year,
- 28:31Speaker 2: this is the first time he's really been in it. So,
- 28:35Speaker 2: like going back to Farv, it was a really really
- 28:38Speaker 2: slow start. They were pulling off wins, but it was
- 28:40Speaker 2: really really slow. And then there was that Niners game.
- 28:44Speaker 2: The Niners weren't good yet, but with a few seconds left,
- 28:47Speaker 2: it was that Farv magic. He slid right, he found
- 28:50Speaker 2: Greg Lewis in the back of the end zone for
- 28:52Speaker 2: this insane touchdown at the buzzer toe tap, and then
- 28:55Speaker 2: all of a sudden, it was the Farv magic. And
- 28:58Speaker 2: so when you guys were lining up for that field goal,
- 29:01Speaker 2: I didn't feel like right, but I saw the same
- 29:04Speaker 2: thing you saw against the Patriots, and I was like,
- 29:06Speaker 2: got I think, get this one, and then he goes
- 29:09Speaker 2: to London. He has this opportunity, and he still has
- 29:12Speaker 2: this opportunity, but to play what is right now a
- 29:16Speaker 2: defense that everybody goes what I don't even understand it,
- 29:19Speaker 2: Like he's gonna be the first veteran to see this defense.
- 29:22Speaker 2: I hope he has the worst day of his year
- 29:26Speaker 2: over there, but I think there's a case to be
- 29:28Speaker 2: made that this is an ultimate opportunity for him to
- 29:32Speaker 2: be the guy who kind of quiets a lot of
- 29:34Speaker 2: that stuff and has one of those moments where you go, oh.
- 29:38Speaker 3: Well, here's the thing.
- 29:40Speaker 4: Pats are obviously not, you know, the best team. To me,
- 29:44Speaker 4: it was still a big step because they're the Patriots.
- 29:45Speaker 4: He had to get over them. But I understand they're
- 29:47Speaker 4: not the best barometer, but it was the Honestly, I
- 29:52Speaker 4: can't believe I'm gonna say this, but maybe like the
- 29:54Speaker 4: first time in my life as a Jets fan, certainly
- 29:57Speaker 4: in a long time, that I watched a quarterback dismantle
- 30:00Speaker 4: a defense like that where it was like we got to.
- 30:03Speaker 3: The point where he was just worried about spreading the
- 30:05Speaker 3: ball around.
- 30:05Speaker 4: He wants everybody to get some receptions because he's just
- 30:09Speaker 4: unlocked this thing and he is just burying you guys.
- 30:12Speaker 4: And so when I saw that, I was like, this
- 30:15Speaker 4: is a different sport than what I've been used to watching.
- 30:19Speaker 4: Like truly, genuinely getting first downs as a Jets fan
- 30:23Speaker 4: with some of the quarterbacks we've had, was a big deal.
- 30:26Speaker 3: I mean, the crowd literally goes and that's a Jets
- 30:29Speaker 3: first down, and we've celebrated.
- 30:32Speaker 4: I mean there, I can think of many games where
- 30:35Speaker 4: it would be like we haven't crossed midfield.
- 30:38Speaker 3: Yet, Like truly, I'm not even joking you.
- 30:41Speaker 2: Here's the thing you went like when we were earlier
- 30:44Speaker 2: doing like this is my fan base. This is my
- 30:46Speaker 2: fan base. The fact that you just elocuted that part
- 30:49Speaker 2: of your team's story is like a deep love for
- 30:53Speaker 2: memorable first downs. That's wild. We have the missed kicks,
- 30:56Speaker 2: but if you're over here like just opining over first
- 31:00Speaker 2: down issues, you win.
- 31:01Speaker 3: Third down conversions, third down conversions. I'm like, this is
- 31:04Speaker 3: a thing. We get the first down, like on third down,
- 31:08Speaker 3: you just get the It.
- 31:09Speaker 4: Was against the Pats, I think it was third and
- 31:12Speaker 4: third and eighteen, third and twenty something, and he just
- 31:14Speaker 4: like got the first down, and I was like, what
- 31:17Speaker 4: I mean, I always go.
- 31:18Speaker 3: Back to this one game. It was Jets Cardinals. Neither
- 31:21Speaker 3: team could cross midfield.
- 31:22Speaker 4: Neither team I think we ended up winning like six three,
- 31:26Speaker 4: and it was just like, this is not football.
- 31:28Speaker 3: It's not a real it's not the sport you guys watch.
- 31:30Speaker 4: And then so when I see dismantling like that, I'm like, oh.
- 31:35Speaker 3: I get it. This is why the NFL is the
- 31:37Speaker 3: biggest sport in the world. Like that was awesome.
- 31:39Speaker 4: So I hope that this is one of those moments,
- 31:42Speaker 4: you know where where he kind of, you know, steps
- 31:45Speaker 4: up and he's that guy, like the relaxed guy already lax,
- 31:48Speaker 4: you know, like relax, we got this.
- 31:50Speaker 2: Well, he kind of had one of those moments on
- 31:52Speaker 2: Thursday Night Football after. I mean, for you as a
- 31:54Speaker 2: fan to watch him beat the Patriots and then go
- 31:56Speaker 2: on there and be like, hey, I know you guys
- 31:57Speaker 2: are tortured. We're changing it.
- 31:59Speaker 3: Yeah, like I'm not about but you know what I said,
- 32:01Speaker 3: I made a video.
- 32:04Speaker 4: We're reacting to that because I have a series called
- 32:06Speaker 4: the Goddamn Jets where we're just running through good or bad,
- 32:11Speaker 4: and I want my quarterback to say that because it
- 32:14Speaker 4: was the moment on the field with Sala where he
- 32:16Speaker 4: goes to hug him and he pushed him away, and
- 32:19Speaker 4: a lot of the fans thought he said too soon,
- 32:21Speaker 4: too soon, like don't celebrate, And in the postgame he
- 32:24Speaker 4: specified that he was saying two scores because I guess
- 32:27Speaker 4: they have some sort of kind of rule that until
- 32:30Speaker 4: you're up by two scores, you don't even you know,
- 32:33Speaker 4: don't get don't get comfortable, which to.
- 32:35Speaker 3: Me, I'm like, that's still not enough. This is the
- 32:37Speaker 3: New York Jets. Yeah, two scores, you know, we need
- 32:40Speaker 3: four scores.
- 32:41Speaker 2: Let's call it the Lincoln rule. Four scores for real.
- 32:45Speaker 4: But he so he had told them because a lot
- 32:47Speaker 4: of people thought there was a little bit of was
- 32:49Speaker 4: that tension?
- 32:49Speaker 3: Were they fighting? What was that? He was like, no, no, no, no,
- 32:51Speaker 3: it's just a rule we have in practice. Got to
- 32:53Speaker 3: be up by two scores.
- 32:54Speaker 4: So he pushed them away and he said that, and
- 32:56Speaker 4: I was like, that's what I want for my quarterback.
- 32:58Speaker 3: But for us when they've won eighteen of twenty.
- 33:02Speaker 4: Yeah, and they've beat us on Thanksgiving and butt fumbles
- 33:05Speaker 4: and laughed at us and Belichick with the napkin and
- 33:09Speaker 4: I see ghosts and all those.
- 33:10Speaker 3: Things you can celebrate.
- 33:12Speaker 4: You can celebrate like like you know, you know, you
- 33:14Speaker 4: got the monkey off your back and maybe that's a
- 33:16Speaker 4: signal of more things to come. So yeah, there's a bigger, bigger,
- 33:21Speaker 4: you know, for him it's worlds, it's a super Bowl
- 33:23Speaker 4: or busts. So but for us, I think it's important
- 33:26Speaker 4: to enjoy the ride a little bit because usually the
- 33:28Speaker 4: ride has completely.
- 33:30Speaker 2: Sucked before I get you out of here. Even though
- 33:33Speaker 2: this is a football podcast, we can't not do this
- 33:36Speaker 2: speaking of that mentality, like that's I'm a diehard Timbrels
- 33:41Speaker 2: fan my whole life, so last, and you want to
- 33:44Speaker 2: talk about a tortured fan base. That is the most
- 33:48Speaker 2: comically your owner signs a contract before surgery that steals
- 33:53Speaker 2: all the draft picks during Kevin Garnett's primes. That's like
- 33:57Speaker 2: you couldn't even you'd write that into a scripts.
- 33:59Speaker 4: The known enough that's not like talked about enough. That
- 34:02Speaker 4: needs to be out there more.
- 34:03Speaker 2: It's one of the wildest and then it's just debacle
- 34:06Speaker 2: after debacle after debacle.
- 34:09Speaker 4: Adam Garnet Marbury and I think was spree well there
- 34:13Speaker 4: with them.
- 34:13Speaker 3: At the same time.
- 34:14Speaker 2: No, so it was it was Garnett, Marbury and Googliata Rights,
- 34:18Speaker 2: and then it was spree Well and Cassell. You want, dude,
- 34:21Speaker 2: here's how funny the tim Wolves are. The tim Wolves
- 34:23Speaker 2: had their one great previous to last year. Their one
- 34:26Speaker 2: great year in franchise history was I'm not saying they
- 34:30Speaker 2: would have beat that weird Karl Malone Gary Payton Lakers team,
- 34:34Speaker 2: but the fact that one of their three most important
- 34:37Speaker 2: players was hampered in that series because when they beat
- 34:40Speaker 2: the Kings to go to the Western Conference Finals, he
- 34:43Speaker 2: did the Major League Big Ball Dance. He hurt his
- 34:47Speaker 2: back doing that. Like you want to talk about a
- 34:50Speaker 2: tortured family. You're telling me that, You're telling me the
- 34:53Speaker 2: Big Ball Dance cost us our only chance at a
- 34:56Speaker 2: title in twenty years. Yeah.
- 34:57Speaker 4: That was like the Mets with Diaz in the World
- 34:59Speaker 4: Baseball Plastic so celebrating a meaningless exhibition, he breaks his leg.
- 35:04Speaker 3: You know, there's so many stories like that.
- 35:06Speaker 4: I feel like over the years we had guys like
- 35:08Speaker 4: injure themselves with Q tips or fall down the stairs
- 35:11Speaker 4: of the dugout, or one guy on the Mets.
- 35:14Speaker 3: Once hurt his back picking up. He's a hunter, he hunt.
- 35:19Speaker 3: He was picking up like an Elkerson and like hurt
- 35:22Speaker 3: his back. I was like, what is going on? Is
- 35:25Speaker 3: fell in a hole because a boar was chasing?
- 35:28Speaker 4: I mean, just things that are like completely they feel
- 35:30Speaker 4: completely made up, and they probably are to be honest,
- 35:32Speaker 4: probably ridiculous stories cover up the truth or something. But
- 35:35Speaker 4: it's like, I'm happy to hear there's at least one
- 35:37Speaker 4: of the franchise out there that has to deal with it,
- 35:39Speaker 4: so or not all old.
- 35:40Speaker 2: I love a millionaire that's so stubborn that he won't
- 35:43Speaker 2: buy an ATV. What are you doing?
- 35:45Speaker 4: Man?
- 35:45Speaker 2: Put the helck on an age right, You don't need
- 35:47Speaker 2: to do I know, I know Hicks who have ATVs
- 35:50Speaker 2: for that exact reason. But you got you got. It's
- 35:54Speaker 2: it's interesting a lot like Kirk Cousins. The town's thing
- 35:57Speaker 2: is divisive here. I'm on record. I think you guys
- 36:02Speaker 2: got a unicorn. I think it'll be really interesting to
- 36:04Speaker 2: see how he fits in. But what I will tell
- 36:08Speaker 2: you is for all the complaining people got on him
- 36:11Speaker 2: about his body language, which bro it's the NBA, Like,
- 36:14Speaker 2: I don't like it. But if body language is gonna
- 36:17Speaker 2: be the thing we're gonna talk about in the NBA,
- 36:18Speaker 2: You're gonna have to write a twelve thousand page essay
- 36:22Speaker 2: about the whole league. But this is a dude who
- 36:25Speaker 2: never complained, never wanted out his dude, the guy who
- 36:28Speaker 2: drafted and died. He plays for all these other coaches.
- 36:31Speaker 2: Jimmy Butler fights him in practice, like he goes on
- 36:35Speaker 2: to win the NBA's version of the Walter Peyton Man.
- 36:37Speaker 2: Like he is such a good, committed human and then oh,
- 36:43Speaker 2: he's also the greatest big man three point shooter of
- 36:45Speaker 2: all time and has a put like I think you're
- 36:48Speaker 2: gonna absolutely love him. What is that? Is that where
- 36:52Speaker 2: you guys are at?
- 36:53Speaker 3: I don't know where we're at right now.
- 36:55Speaker 4: I think the Jalen Brunson Knicks are so likable, like
- 37:02Speaker 4: one of the most likable teams I think in like
- 37:04Speaker 4: sports history. The Nova Knicks thing is incredible. These guys
- 37:08Speaker 4: are all like literally best friends, all have a history together,
- 37:12Speaker 4: and and Brunson kind of embodies this like, you know,
- 37:15Speaker 4: he was he was underrated, overrated, under you know, they
- 37:19Speaker 4: thought the contract was too big, they didn't think he
- 37:22Speaker 4: was a superstar. He's always said that, people said he
- 37:24Speaker 4: was too short, too slow, And he ends up being
- 37:27Speaker 4: you know, absolutely awesome, and they just put around this
- 37:31Speaker 4: crew of guys that are so so likable, like Hartenstein
- 37:35Speaker 4: is this like electric guy that reminds me of like
- 37:38Speaker 4: the old Knicks, and you got a bunch of shooters
- 37:40Speaker 4: hitting big shots, and I think there was this feeling
- 37:42Speaker 4: of like, let's try to get the job done with
- 37:45Speaker 4: these guys, you.
- 37:46Speaker 3: Know, bring back Randall, Let the Nova Knicks.
- 37:49Speaker 4: You know, they put bridges in the mix, like let's
- 37:52Speaker 4: get over the hump with that. And I think that's unrealistic,
- 37:57Speaker 4: and I think that's the job of a GM is
- 38:00Speaker 4: to be like, yeah, listen, it's cute that they all
- 38:03Speaker 4: played for the same college. It's not realistic. Devincenzo had said,
- 38:07Speaker 4: I don't want to be a bench player. I don't
- 38:09Speaker 4: want to be relegated to the bench because of these moves,
- 38:12Speaker 4: like I'm not gonna be happy here, so they move
- 38:14Speaker 4: him Randall.
- 38:16Speaker 3: Randall's an interesting player because Randall.
- 38:18Speaker 4: At times is like unstoppable twenty six and fifteen, like,
- 38:22Speaker 4: you know, one of the best big men, you know, imaginable,
- 38:25Speaker 4: and then in the postseason, you know, disappears, doesn't get
- 38:28Speaker 4: it done.
- 38:29Speaker 3: Can be a very you know, emotional type of player.
- 38:34Speaker 3: I'm a little upset about that first round pick. I
- 38:36Speaker 3: feel like they could have maybe got it.
- 38:37Speaker 2: Love it. That's the thing that's getting That's the thing
- 38:39Speaker 2: that's keeping me afloat, brother Matt.
- 38:41Speaker 4: Because that that pick is you know, the pistons are dreaded, they're.
- 38:45Speaker 2: Not good, and it's not incredibly protected, right, I know
- 38:48Speaker 2: it's protected, but what is it top two or three
- 38:51Speaker 2: something like that.
- 38:51Speaker 3: Yeah, it's gonna be a good one. It's gonna be
- 38:53Speaker 3: a good one.
- 38:54Speaker 4: And so there's a little bit of like it also
- 38:57Speaker 4: just came out of nowhere, at least not for me,
- 38:59Speaker 4: like I for siders, we're talking about it, but everyone
- 39:02Speaker 4: was like what and then you know Kat tweeting just
- 39:06Speaker 4: like the three dots, like the ellipses. Yeah, I think
- 39:10Speaker 4: it's going to be something where we look back and go, like,
- 39:13Speaker 4: remember when people the same thing on a smaller scale
- 39:16Speaker 4: that happened with OG when they when the next traded
- 39:20Speaker 4: quickly and RJ Barrett, people were upset because it was
- 39:23Speaker 4: like these are homegrown and all that, and it's like, oh,
- 39:27Speaker 4: that was like the best trade.
- 39:28Speaker 3: Out O O G.
- 39:29Speaker 2: It was flabbergasted by that because that dude is an
- 39:32Speaker 2: absolute monster.
- 39:33Speaker 4: And the only other thing I think with Kat is
- 39:36Speaker 4: he does not give off the tough, the toughest of vibes.
- 39:40Speaker 3: And this team was like gangster.
- 39:42Speaker 4: The Knicks were like they were they could, they had talent,
- 39:45Speaker 4: but they were also like, you know, we you you
- 39:48Speaker 4: do not mess with us. And when you lose Hartenstein,
- 39:52Speaker 4: who's kind of that heart and soul and and ryandall's
- 39:56Speaker 4: one of those guys. And then your replacement is Carl
- 39:58Speaker 4: Anthony Towns, who's like, like, like you said, very gifted,
- 40:02Speaker 4: but not the most you know, the tough New York
- 40:06Speaker 4: guy we want him to be. But if you're out
- 40:08Speaker 4: there reigning threes and you're an offensive weapon and everything's.
- 40:11Speaker 3: Clicking, it all goes away.
- 40:13Speaker 2: So yeah, that's right, weird trade.
- 40:14Speaker 3: I feel like it's.
- 40:15Speaker 4: Gonna be one that, uh, you know, hopefully everybody works out.
- 40:19Speaker 4: It's very rare, but like both teams might end up
- 40:21Speaker 4: looking at it thinking it's all right, I don't.
- 40:23Speaker 3: Know, it's kind of weird for and nothing's going on there.
- 40:27Speaker 4: I had an inkling was like I'd have thought like
- 40:29Speaker 4: it was Anthony Edwards, like this is my team and
- 40:32Speaker 4: I don't like this guy.
- 40:33Speaker 2: No, no, No, he's cat.
- 40:34Speaker 4: Cat is this guy, because like, so that was the
- 40:36Speaker 4: only thing that maybe made sense to me.
- 40:38Speaker 3: You were the you were the one seed, right or
- 40:40Speaker 3: the two seed, one seed.
- 40:41Speaker 2: Three seeds, one seed most of this season, like.
- 40:44Speaker 4: Your best season ever. I think you were the one
- 40:46Speaker 4: seed for at least a chunk of the year. Like
- 40:48Speaker 4: it's like, oh, the Wolves, they're one of those teams
- 40:51Speaker 4: where I used to say the Wolves are never gonna
- 40:52Speaker 4: win because.
- 40:53Speaker 3: They're the Wolves.
- 40:54Speaker 4: They put it together and then they take it away
- 40:58Speaker 4: like it better work.
- 40:59Speaker 3: Or that's a strange move.
- 41:01Speaker 2: I think. And I'm not smart enough to conceptualize all this,
- 41:04Speaker 2: but I think it is with the new Bargaining Agreement,
- 41:09Speaker 2: the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, if you are over the
- 41:11Speaker 2: second apron, you just are what you are. You can't trade,
- 41:15Speaker 2: Like I think the restrictions to move around after that
- 41:19Speaker 2: are pretty intense. And I think they looked at it going, well,
- 41:22Speaker 2: we can either run it back exactly like this, and
- 41:25Speaker 2: that means eventually, will you lose this guy and this
- 41:28Speaker 2: will change.
- 41:28Speaker 3: Or I mean, his contract is nuts.
- 41:31Speaker 2: It's nuts.
- 41:32Speaker 4: It's light but fifty one, fifty five, sixty two and
- 41:35Speaker 4: then sixty seven million a year.
- 41:37Speaker 2: If the next is crazy, here's what I'll tell you,
- 41:39Speaker 2: And then I'm gonna ask you one Viking question so
- 41:41Speaker 2: I don't get yelled at for turning it into a
- 41:44Speaker 2: Timbers podcast on the Vikings Dime, But I was there
- 41:48Speaker 2: is a possibility last year was the best year of
- 41:51Speaker 2: Kat's career, both from an on the court standpoint, a
- 41:55Speaker 2: defensive standpoint, but most importantly a maturity standpoint. Okay, it
- 41:59Speaker 2: was his most sure year, and there is a chance
- 42:02Speaker 2: that that is the inflection point for him that launches
- 42:06Speaker 2: him into this new universe. There's a there's a chance
- 42:08Speaker 2: that halfway through this NBA season, You're gonna send me
- 42:11Speaker 2: a message and be like, what the dude, how is it? Like,
- 42:15Speaker 2: there's a chance, especially because he is his pick and
- 42:18Speaker 2: pop with Brunson, especially with other shooters, And I'm like, ah,
- 42:23Speaker 2: that is.
- 42:24Speaker 4: One thing I was thinking of, is like the way
- 42:26Speaker 4: that that offense could be run with all the shooters
- 42:29Speaker 4: and with Brunson, and then you got this big guy
- 42:31Speaker 4: who's so versatile, and you got to get somebody to
- 42:34Speaker 4: really go up against embiid and get the East Like
- 42:37Speaker 4: I think I think we'll look back and be like
- 42:39Speaker 4: remember when we were worried about that. Now in a
- 42:41Speaker 4: couple more years, when we see what that draft pick is,
- 42:43Speaker 4: it might flip again and you might be like, well,
- 42:45Speaker 4: that's what we won. But for the short term, I
- 42:48Speaker 4: think and I trust. I trust the Knicks runt office
- 42:51Speaker 4: for the first time, and you know, twenty five years,
- 42:54Speaker 4: Leon Rose has been incredible, so he does, like we
- 42:57Speaker 4: we ride with him.
- 42:58Speaker 2: What last thing for you on the game? I'm curious.
- 43:02Speaker 2: I'm curious about a prediction. If you give one, but one,
- 43:05Speaker 2: I'd also be curious. And this is like my one
- 43:07Speaker 2: bully move as a host. But I want to know, like,
- 43:10Speaker 2: what's the one thing you're worried about? Like when you're
- 43:12Speaker 2: looking at this Vikings team, what's the one thing that
- 43:14Speaker 2: you think they do so well or you're so impressed
- 43:17Speaker 2: by that it is you know, you're ruminating on it,
- 43:21Speaker 2: Like what's what's the big concern going into this weekend?
- 43:23Speaker 2: If you leave your own universe of this is what's
- 43:26Speaker 2: wrong with my team?
- 43:27Speaker 4: I mean, I I very much believe in I think
- 43:31Speaker 4: sports are this weird combination of of like the most tangible.
- 43:37Speaker 4: It's live and these guys are playing it and you
- 43:41Speaker 4: never know what's going to happen, while also being mixed
- 43:43Speaker 4: in with like I think it's all scripted and written
- 43:45Speaker 4: in the stars and written in stone, and the fact
- 43:48Speaker 4: that they're facing Donald's this in a good situation.
- 43:52Speaker 3: It just has every.
- 43:54Speaker 4: Like New York media, New York fan base, all that
- 43:57Speaker 4: freaking out over it, Like we went and got Aaron
- 44:00Speaker 4: Rodgers and and like, look he ended up beating us,
- 44:04Speaker 4: and that that to me has a high potential. And
- 44:08Speaker 4: that's but that's also where I I I think of
- 44:11Speaker 4: like maybe this is where Aaron Rodgers says, like all
- 44:13Speaker 4: of your dumb little superstitions and all those little things,
- 44:16Speaker 4: like get rid of them, because that doesn't matter anymore.
- 44:20Speaker 4: But that that's what has me has me most scared
- 44:23Speaker 4: going in. I mean, you said the defense has been
- 44:25Speaker 4: lights out as as I understand it, I had not
- 44:27Speaker 4: really gotten to see them play much. But as I
- 44:29Speaker 4: as I understand it, that's, uh, you know what what
- 44:32Speaker 4: we need to fear right now. And that offense did
- 44:34Speaker 4: not look great against the the Broncos. Again, that was
- 44:37Speaker 4: the weather was was nasty. But I think right now
- 44:40Speaker 4: he's Rogers is really only comfortable throwing Alan Lazard. I
- 44:43Speaker 4: think like he's still learning everybody else and and that,
- 44:47Speaker 4: so you know that going up against the real solid
- 44:49Speaker 4: defense would give me pause. But it's that storyline, man,
- 44:53Speaker 4: that's that's that storyline of like the Donald revenge game,
- 44:57Speaker 4: you know, makes me want to puke just think about it.
- 45:00Speaker 2: Well, let's let's make sure the storyline of the Aaron
- 45:03Speaker 2: Rodgers breakout is week six.
- 45:05Speaker 4: Okay, yeah, yeah, how about we play you know no nobody,
- 45:10Speaker 4: you know, no star, no superstar performances.
- 45:13Speaker 3: I'll come down to a field home point flip.
- 45:14Speaker 4: We'll see how it happens and maybe the storylines can
- 45:17Speaker 4: can resume next week.
- 45:18Speaker 2: You're king, dude.
- 45:19Speaker 3: Thank you love it man, Thanks a love.
- 45:21Speaker 2: Thanks again to Kevin Clancy for joining the show, and
- 45:24Speaker 2: thank you to all of you for joining the show. Also,
- 45:27Speaker 2: huge shout out to Ticketmaster, the official ticket marketplace of
- 45:31Speaker 2: the Minnesota Vikings, for helping make this show happen. Hey,
- 45:34Speaker 2: and we're off next week during the bye, so we'll
- 45:36Speaker 2: see you Viking fans all again in two weeks
