But it's useful. Today we're talking about allergies. Lucas: Allergies are common. So let's learn how to say 'I have an allergy' in Dutch. Luna: Ooh, good one. How do I say that? Lucas: Ik heb een allergie. Listen again: Ik heb een allergie. Luna: Ik heb een allergie. Lucas: Perfect. Ik heb means 'I have', een allergie means 'an allergy'. Luna: Ik heb een allergie. So if I'm allergic to pollen, I can say that. Lucas: Exactly. And a specific type of allergy is hay fever. In Dutch it's hooikoorts. Luna: Hooikoorts. That sounds like 'hay' and 'fever' mixed. Lucas: It is. Hooi is hay, koorts is fever. So hooikoorts. Say it with me: Ik heb hooikoorts. Luna: Ik heb hooikoorts. Lucas: Good. So you can say Ik heb een allergie, or more specifically, Ik heb hooikoorts. Luna: Right. Now I need to ask for medicine. How do I say 'I'm looking for an antihistamine'? Lucas: Ik zoek een antihistaminicum. It's a bit of a mouthful. Ik zoek een antihistaminicum. Luna: Ik zoek een antihistaminicum. Wow, that's a long word. Lucas: It is. But you can also just say: Hebt u iets tegen allergie? — Do you have something for allergies? Luna: Oh, that's simpler. Hebt u iets tegen allergie? Lucas: Yes. Hebt u means 'do you have', iets means 'something', tegen means 'against', allergie means 'allergy'. Luna: Hebt u iets tegen allergie? Perfect. Lucas: And then they'll show you something. You can ask: Hoeveel kost dit? — How much does this cost? Luna: Hoeveel kost dit? We've used that before. Good one. Lucas: Let's practice a mini conversation. I'll be the pharmacist. You come in.
