Transcript
- 0:03[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome to the Offseason, a show covering the mighty Gulf, the NFL, pop culture, drinking culture and of course.
- 0:12[SPEAKER_01]: I show you how, you're your host, out for T.I.
- 0:16[SPEAKER_01]: in myself.
- 0:18[SPEAKER_00]: And we're on, this is the season finale of the Offseason, with myself and Merritt Brave.
- 0:26[SPEAKER_00]: Now, if you're thinking, damn, I'm not going to see merit for, for months now, that might not be true.
- 0:31[SPEAKER_00]: I think it might be popping in from time to time on shows.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_00]: You know, like, we got to firmly sitting there on the bench.
- 0:40[SPEAKER_00]: Like you, you never know.
- 0:42[SPEAKER_00]: You never know when we call on him, you know, for a sub to give us a boost.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_00]: So you'll be around.
- 0:50[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, but Merrick I guess we have a lot to talk about and I think that we should dedicate the second half of the show to the dolphins as we just lead as we just lead everybody right into training camp Which is my favorite time of the year because we don't lose we don't lose a single game in training camp undefeated Yeah, and training camp.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_00]: You just look at the team you're like, no bad.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_00]: They might be pretty good.
- 1:13[SPEAKER_00]: Now the problem is sometimes you get into training camp.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_01]: You're like, whoa, this team's bad
- 1:18[SPEAKER_00]: Like in 2019, I looked at that team and I was like, my god, like this is not good and they actually surprised us.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_00]: They won five games.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 1:30[SPEAKER_00]: I'm hoping that that won't be the case this year.
- 1:32[SPEAKER_00]: That I'll go to training camp this year and that's happening soon.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_00]: That's happening in about three weeks time.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_00]: That I go to training camp this year and I look at the team and I'm like, you know, not bad.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_00]: That's what I'm hoping for, okay, but we shall see and we want to talk plenty about that in the second half of the show, but in the first half of the show, there's some things I want to talk about and if you don't think that I was going to put on my team, you would stay ahead.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_00]: at least once on a podcast this year you're sadly mistaken.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_00]: So even though they went out in a whimper, you know, we will talk about that as well.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_00]: Going to start with wrestling.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_00]: A week ago, we were talking about Sammy saying, you know, not kind of into this fan service stuff and one week later, the WWE must have heard me because they said, oh, let's just do fan service to to everybody
- 2:25[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't know, kind of shocking.
- 2:29[SPEAKER_00]: Come on, that, you know, the, the, he has, I don't think he put the side plates on on the boat yet.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_01]: Probably not.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_01]: No.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_00]: He walks into a raw and he walks out.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_00]: Sam is in again, you know, fan favorite, great wrestler, fun watch, but no longer champion and seeing punks of
- 2:54[SPEAKER_00]: I had to have been a plan.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_00]: There's no way that they looked at us at them.
- 2:57[SPEAKER_00]: You know what?
- 2:57[SPEAKER_00]: We were wrong about no.
- 2:59[SPEAKER_00]: Like this was their plan.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_00]: What do you think of it?
- 3:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know, I saw the online discourse following Monday Night Raw and I saw people reacting to it and there was a lot of people who were very upset.
- 3:12[SPEAKER_01]: I had people texting me because they were very upset about what they felt, what they perceived to be poor treatment of Sami Zayn.
- 3:22[SPEAKER_01]: I don't see it that way.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_01]: Like you said, Alph, this was a plan.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_01]: It's saying he's a new that this was going to be the outcome all along, right?
- 3:29[SPEAKER_01]: Like I get it.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_01]: I love that people are as invested in the professional wrestling business as they are.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_01]: It's my business.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_01]: I make my living off of professional wrestling.
- 3:39[SPEAKER_01]: So I want people to be invested.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_01]: But you have to remember, these guys are essentially paid actors, right?
- 3:47[SPEAKER_01]: You know, they, they
- 3:51[SPEAKER_01]: often get to write their own story lines.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_01]: So somewhere along the line, Triple H or a writer came up to Sammy and say, Hey, we have an idea.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_01]: We want you to win.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_01]: the championship from from Cody Rhodes in in Saudi Arabia.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, hey, that's a great idea.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_01]: And and soon after you'll probably be dropping it to see him punk when he makes his return in Chicago.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_01]: And if Sammy's a really didn't want to do that storyline, he could have spoken up because said no, no, no, I'm not interested.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to do that now.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_01]: Bad for job security.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 4:26[SPEAKER_01]: You don't want to tell the boss.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_01]: No, I'm not doing that Not in this business, but he knew he knew this was going to happen So this benefit Sammy a multiple ways in my opinion one He gets to always say for the rest of his life that he is a former WWE on the Spuner WWE Champion
- 4:42[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 4:43[SPEAKER_01]: How many guys in this business out of the thousands and thousands and thousands of professional wrestlers?
- 4:50[SPEAKER_01]: There are out there.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_01]: How many guys get to say that?
- 4:52[SPEAKER_01]: Get to say, I won the biggest prize in this industry.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_01]: And that's a heavyweight title in WWE.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_01]: San Jose.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_00]: Isn't that the linear one too?
- 5:02[SPEAKER_00]: Like that's the legitimate one.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, I think so.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because the new belt was the one that Romans holding and the one that Seth's going after at Summerslam, but, you know, Sammy Zane gets to say he's a former heavyweight champion in WWE.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_01]: No matter where he goes or what he does for the rest of his professional wrestling career for the rest of his life, even if he's an 85 year old, doing the the the Russell con circuit coming in hanging out with me when we're a couple old men doing that thing.
- 5:34[SPEAKER_01]: He'll get to say former world champion in the biggest company in the world, all right?
- 5:40[SPEAKER_01]: That's a feather in his cap no matter how you look at it But people like to say oh he deserved a long title right nobody deserves anything in this business This is a scripted television show he won a title because a writer
- 5:55[SPEAKER_01]: told him he was going to win a title.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_01]: He didn't go out there and beat up Cody Rose and beat up Gunther for Rio.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 6:02[SPEAKER_01]: This was this was all part of the show.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_01]: This was all part of the storyline.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, I think we both kind of said it last week.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_01]: be kind of shocked if Sami Zayn went into Summerslam as champion.
- 6:15[SPEAKER_01]: Now I thought maybe he'd drop it to Brock or drop it to Oba ahead of time, but it turned out to be CM Punk and CM Punk comes back from a brief hiatus.
- 6:25[SPEAKER_01]: I see people out here saying CM Punk has become everything he once hated.
- 6:30[SPEAKER_01]: CM Punk was off TV for 11 weeks.
- 6:32[SPEAKER_01]: He was off TV for two and a half months, you know what I mean, which is a normal occurrence when somebody drops a major championship, you kind of give him a reset by giving them a little bit of a break and then they can come back later.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_01]: Go look at past champions.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_01]: This is a very common thing.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_01]: It's not just something that punk did.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_01]: It's something that champions do all the time.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_01]: You want to give him a reset.
- 6:54[SPEAKER_01]: Let people forget about the stink.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_01]: of the recent loss and they can come back make a big shocking return and he just so happened to win the heavyweight championship on the night of his return But Sammy gets to always say he was a former world champion now he can really lean into this kind of pseudo heel turn that he was doing he was he was kind of dipping his toes in now he can jump all the way into the pool you know what I mean he can
- 7:20[SPEAKER_01]: he can really lean into the fact that he was screwed and and CM Punk didn't earn that opportunity and that's not the match he was supposed to have and he can really become that that whiny chicken shit heel and and basically say there's a conspiracy against him.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean, which is really good for his character.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_01]: It's really good for his storyline arc.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_01]: And then we're all winners, because now we get to go into Summerslam, presumably with punk versus Cody, or maybe a triple threat, punk Cody and Sammy, I'm not opposed to that either, you know what I mean?
- 7:53[SPEAKER_01]: You get to see that, you get to see Rollins and Reigns tear it up in the main event of the other night.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_01]: And then, oh yeah, you get Brock and Oberthemmy in Hellinousel.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_01]: as well.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_01]: And that, in my opinion, is shaping up to be maybe the best card of the year in terms of WWE, it sounds more exciting to me than WrestleMania did.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know how you feel about it, help.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I completely agree with you.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_00]: And another thing about punk, and I've seen this in the
- 8:24[SPEAKER_00]: I hate that they have an acronym, but the IWC.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody's like, oh, you know, punk now is is headed toward part time or status.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm like, what's wrong with that?
- 8:35[SPEAKER_00]: The guy's older.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_00]: You want to see him more, right?
- 8:37[SPEAKER_00]: 48 years old.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_00]: Like, if you want him on every single show, you're gonna have him for a year.
- 8:43[SPEAKER_00]: Cause he's basically gonna fall apart.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_00]: He's gonna fall the pieces by the end of the year.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_00]: By January, there's gonna be nothing left of CM Punk to watch.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_01]: And once again, that is something that was very commonplace when we were younger.
- 8:59[SPEAKER_01]: You know, Hulk Cogan didn't wrestle every time WWE,
- 9:02[SPEAKER_01]: or WWF at that time, had a televised event.
- 9:05[SPEAKER_01]: It was special when Hulk Cogan wrestled, and when Hulk Cogan defended the title, you wanted to tune in to see that.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think this needs to be an every Monday, every Friday, every PLE situation, right?
- 9:18[SPEAKER_01]: And we talked about that.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_00]: And that's something that they have to get back to, okay?
- 9:23[SPEAKER_00]: Because I remember, and I hate to be, you know, the old man on my lawn, you know, screaming at clouds,
- 9:29[SPEAKER_00]: But I remember when I was a kid and, you know, the show used to come on and it was Saturday night times and they were like, and we have a treat for you and I'm like, a treat.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_00]: What's this?
- 9:41[SPEAKER_00]: There.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_00]: Randy Savage is going for the intercontinental title today and I'm like, what on TV?
- 9:53[SPEAKER_01]: You know, draw it pop viewership people were like, I got a tune in for that.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_00]: You know, yeah, it was special like and now it's like Oh, you won't believe what we're gonna have on raw this Monday.
- 10:03[SPEAKER_00]: Let me guys three championship matches You know what I mean like oh you got a tune in on Friday cuz smack time do you have any idea What we're gonna have on smack down let me guys the heavyweight titles online
- 10:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's become so much more common place.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_01]: Like you said, it's no longer special.
- 10:20[SPEAKER_01]: It no longer gives you that added incentive to tune in.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_01]: So I listen, I get the argument.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_01]: And I get why wrestlers would walk around, you know, my business partner is one of them.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_01]: And he takes pride in the fact that he's on every show, you know, and I mean, he's there and he's doing the work.
- 10:38[SPEAKER_01]: I get why people would take pride in that.
- 10:40[SPEAKER_01]: But again, CM Punk is 48 years old, he's damn near 50 years old, he's suffered major injuries over the last few years.
- 10:49[SPEAKER_01]: He's tore his triceps multiple times.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_01]: So you want to keep him fresh, you want to keep him healthy, and you want to keep him
- 11:01[SPEAKER_01]: you want it to be a big deal when CM Punk wrestles, right?
- 11:04[SPEAKER_01]: He could show up with the belt on his shoulder and cut a promo and an advanced story lines that way, but I don't need to see CM Punk wrestle every single Monday, okay?
- 11:13[SPEAKER_01]: If he wrestles at the PLEs and he defends the title at the big ones,
- 11:18[SPEAKER_01]: That's completely okay with me, but like you said, the IWC man, they they think they know this business better than the people who are in charge and in their mind if you're a halfway decent professional wrestler you deserve
- 11:33[SPEAKER_01]: every championship you deserve to be a grand slam champion you deserve to hold the belt for a minimum of six months you deserve to have a 20 minute match on every single show that you appear on you deserve to never lose and yada yada yada that's just not how this works it's cyclical right
- 11:51[SPEAKER_01]: You start here.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_01]: You move down.
- 11:53[SPEAKER_01]: You come back up, right?
- 11:54[SPEAKER_01]: Punk did his circle when he was off TV.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_01]: That's okay.
- 11:58[SPEAKER_01]: Punk is a top star.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_01]: He's a top draw.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_01]: Him coming back and winning the championship in his hometown in a shocking way.
- 12:06[SPEAKER_01]: That's good for business.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_01]: It's good for Sami Zayn.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_01]: Whether you think it is or not, it's good for Sami Zayn to be involved in a storyline like that.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_01]: He's not going to suffer from this.
- 12:16[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, if you saw some of the backstage promos, they were releasing from Sami after he dropped the title on Monday.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_01]: That was really good work from Sami.
- 12:25[SPEAKER_01]: He's at the end of one of them.
- 12:27[SPEAKER_01]: He crumpled
- 12:31[SPEAKER_01]: Right?
- 12:32[SPEAKER_01]: That's awesome.
- 12:33[SPEAKER_01]: That's such good work from Sammy.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_01]: And if he leans into that and becomes that character, and he gets the ability to deliver these promos on TV every week, then his star only grows.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_01]: You know, so Sammy's not hurting.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_01]: He's doing just fine, former world champion, CM Punk's back, and now summer slam shaping up to be an epic encounter between him and
- 12:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I remember, you know, last thing on this, when I was a kid, and that's something that the WWE used to, or WWE F at the time, used to do much better than anybody does now, although a W tries to do the same thing, which I give him credit for, which is the actual one on one interview that you have with somebody with some some gravitas because, you know, not that they, you know,
- 13:26[SPEAKER_00]: not to denigrate any of these women because usually they're just pretty faces and they actually have one that's really really good at her job because she's great in hockey.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_00]: I keep forgetting her name.
- 13:37[SPEAKER_00]: Jackie Redmond.
- 13:38[SPEAKER_00]: Jackie Redmond.
- 13:39[SPEAKER_00]: She's absolutely fabulous but they don't give her a lot to do.
- 13:42[SPEAKER_00]: They have her asked one or two questions and it's over.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_00]: back in the day used to have like mean genocular and do like a whole interview back there and he used to be like a ten-minute segment and one of the best ones I ever remember because I was like well this was great and I've saw it recently was when Greg the Hammer Valentine had a program with Tito Santana for the intercontinental title and for a thousand years all we knew was Tito Santana was the champion he was the intercontinental champion right
- 14:10[SPEAKER_00]: They started a show, Saturday Night Titans, with Jimmy Hart coming on to camera with with Minty and Oakland.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_00]: And Minty and Oakland looks at him and says, all right, time for you to glow Jimmy.
- 14:22[SPEAKER_00]: And he goes, yeah, it's time to glow.
- 14:23[SPEAKER_00]: And then the next thing you see is Greg Hammer, Greg, the Hammer Valentine walks onto the screen and he has the intercontinental title.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_00]: And they revealed in the interview that he beat him in a house show at Madison Square
- 14:38[SPEAKER_00]: And I go, and we're going to show you that match now, and they showed the match.
- 14:43[SPEAKER_00]: And after the match, it said, we have a special announcement.
- 14:47[SPEAKER_00]: They will do the return match a month from today on this very program.
- 14:53[SPEAKER_00]: And I remember thinking myself, hey, is it this Saturday or is it next Saturday?
- 15:00[SPEAKER_00]: That doesn't exist in wrestling anymore, and it should come back.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_01]: you know make it rare excited you get people excited for things like that and i thought i thought it was well done i thought you know the the garage door opening and you see punk standing there in the same spot that a year ago he gets attacked by drew mac and tire i believe and uh... there was a lot of callbacks and and just just cool moments and give punk credit he's in the best shape of his life i don't think i've ever seen
- 15:34[SPEAKER_01]: as he does right now.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, he's been, he's, he's training with what's that, he's a big bodybuilding guy, Joe.
- 15:45[SPEAKER_01]: I can't remember his last day, he works with an F. But, you know, he's taking his, his health and his fitness very seriously right now.
- 15:53[SPEAKER_01]: And, and he looks great.
- 15:55[SPEAKER_01]: So, up.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_01]: It got me excited, it got me interested and like I said, same thing is a friend of mine in real life.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_01]: I was very happy for him winning the title.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_01]: I'm still happy for him.
- 16:08[SPEAKER_01]: A nine day reign is is whatever, you know, how many how many days did Mick Foley hold the title like combined.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_00]: I think it was like two weeks.
- 16:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like it doesn't matter, but everywhere Mick Foley goes, he gets to walk around and talk about being, uh, I don't even remember, two-time champion or three-time champion, however many times he won the title, but you don't remember that.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_01]: Nobody goes, oh yeah, but it was only for two weeks.
- 16:33[SPEAKER_01]: Nobody's going to care.
- 16:34[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, Sami Zayn and only held the title for for nine days.
- 16:39[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, we used to get money in the bank cashins the same night that people were winning titles.
- 16:44[SPEAKER_01]: We've had title reigns at last two minutes.
- 16:47[SPEAKER_01]: So nine days is actually a long time compared to two minutes, but, you know, he'll be just fine, he'll be just fine, and the company will be just fine too, and everybody's saying they're boycotting this and boy, man, y'all been saying that for years and WWE is more popular now than they ever have been, so I don't think anyone's saying they're boycotting is actually falling falling through them.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_00]: And I've heard there are merch numbers, like those are ridiculous numbers, okay?
- 17:21[SPEAKER_00]: And that's another thing, same punk move merch, like I believe he's number two right now behind Dan Housing, which is saying something, okay?
- 17:29[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, okay, because you know what I, you know how I always feel, like if I buy your shirt, it's a big deal.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I kind of needed Dan Housing shirt.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he's got a bunch of them.
- 17:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I got to pick one out, you know, because I've grown my, because my daughter keeps buying anything, so I've grown my collection.
- 17:49[SPEAKER_00]: I know I have, because I love the Becky Lynch shirt.
- 17:52[SPEAKER_00]: The one that has the muckshot.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 17:55[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 17:56[SPEAKER_00]: I have that one and I have a close to I have.
- 18:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 18:00[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I have a lot to.
- 18:02[SPEAKER_00]: That was the best looking shirt I've ever seen.
- 18:05[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_00]: And I have Roman reigns.
- 18:08[SPEAKER_00]: I have Lesnar and I have the cool Lesnar one, which is the one, the custom one that they made for every city, the suplex city ones.
- 18:15[SPEAKER_00]: I have the one that says suplex city Miami.
- 18:18[SPEAKER_00]: So I have that one, which is cool.
- 18:21[SPEAKER_01]: What color scheme did they go with that one?
- 18:23[SPEAKER_01]: Did they go Miami here?
- 18:24[SPEAKER_01]: Do they go Miami
- 18:26[SPEAKER_00]: It's, uh, it's a mix of both because it's turquoise and pink, so I went like Miami vise colors at the time it was a big deal that the heat had an alternate jersey that was like Miami vise colors.
- 18:39[SPEAKER_00]: It was turquoise and pink.
- 18:41[SPEAKER_00]: So I guess it said, ah, we're going to go with this.
- 18:44[SPEAKER_00]: So, and it's a really cool shirt, you know?
- 18:46[SPEAKER_00]: I still have that.
- 18:47[SPEAKER_00]: And of course, my stone cool shirt, which I got to have.
- 18:49[SPEAKER_00]: And I have my just bring it rock shirt.
- 18:53[SPEAKER_00]: Last thing I'm wrestling, dark side of the ring just kicked off their latest season.
- 18:59[SPEAKER_00]: And they kicked it off and style with Jeff Jarrett.
- 19:03[SPEAKER_00]: Two hours, I saw it last night.
- 19:06[SPEAKER_00]: And it was one of those things where I couldn't see it live and I'm like, and I checked my phone,
- 19:10[SPEAKER_00]: And my phone, I go to Iceland and I look at my phone and it says the next showing is that midnight.
- 19:16[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, I'm staying up for this shit.
- 19:18[SPEAKER_00]: I don't get far.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_00]: So I stayed up from 12 to 2 to watch this thing did not regret it.
- 19:25[SPEAKER_00]: I think part 3 is next week.
- 19:27[SPEAKER_00]: So they're making us wait.
- 19:29[SPEAKER_00]: It was absolutely awesome.
- 19:30[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if you saw it did you see I did yep.
- 19:33[SPEAKER_01]: I got it on my DVR.
- 19:34[SPEAKER_01]: I watched it at a at a normal time I'm an early to bed kind of guy.
- 19:39[SPEAKER_01]: You won't see me staying up to midnight But I did I want I watched the entire two hours.
- 19:43[SPEAKER_01]: I thought it was really good.
- 19:44[SPEAKER_01]: I thought it was really good.
- 19:45[SPEAKER_01]: You get a
- 19:48[SPEAKER_01]: a new perspective I want to say of Jeff Jarrett right because his is TV characters have always been so so healish right he's so good at playing the heel and so you know back then it wasn't as common place for you to know everything about a professional wrestling you know social media
- 20:05[SPEAKER_01]: wasn't a thing.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_01]: So you, you know, especially me, I'm growing up thinking, oh, Jeff Jarrod, he must be an asshole, you know, because he's always an asshole on TV.
- 20:13[SPEAKER_01]: And then he goes to TNA, he starts the company.
- 20:15[SPEAKER_01]: He obviously wins the heavyweight championship there.
- 20:18[SPEAKER_01]: And I remember him holding it for so long.
- 20:21[SPEAKER_01]: And as a, I was probably 17, 18 years old at that time and just just being like, oh my god, he's holding this belt for so long.
- 20:29[SPEAKER_01]: But now, you know,
- 20:34[SPEAKER_01]: you know, as my as my knowledge of the business has grown, that's exactly what you need to do a to to cement him as as top heel and be to establish that championship as something worth winning in a brand new company.
- 20:47[SPEAKER_01]: So, but I I liked the perspective on him dealing with what he dealt with when he lost his first wife to breast cancer and and how
- 20:57[SPEAKER_01]: how much he supported her through those difficult times and he was right by her side when she did eventually pass away and then it was it was interesting to start to get the perspective the opposite perspective of what we were being told through the dirt sheets back then
- 21:15[SPEAKER_01]: about the Karen Angle situation and her divorce from Kurt and her getting involved with Jeff after the death of his first wife and it seems we're going to dive more into that next Tuesday night on Vice but
- 21:31[SPEAKER_01]: They got me hooked.
- 21:32[SPEAKER_01]: I think dark side of the ring is not just like my favorite TD show right now, but it's my favorite thing involving wrestling that is is happening in today's day and age right.
- 21:44[SPEAKER_01]: I enjoy it more than watching a raw or smack down or a dynamite.
- 21:49[SPEAKER_01]: I just I really enjoy learning about the sorted paths of all these people.
- 21:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I thought it was fun, you know, to see Kurt Angle at his best, you know, Kurt Angle, you know, pound for pound, like
- 22:04[SPEAKER_00]: Man, if you're finding better wrestlers than Kurt Angle all around, maybe you can kind of on one hand, right?
- 22:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 22:12[SPEAKER_01]: And the thing with Kurt is he just took to the business so quickly.
- 22:16[SPEAKER_01]: He was at an advanced age, you know, for joining the business, he had already broken his neck in Olympic competition, you know, that was a shoot.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_01]: And he, within two years of joining WWE, he was main eventing WrestleMania's, and not just because they wanted him to, but because he was good enough to.
- 22:38[SPEAKER_01]: And he was holding his own with guys like Shawn Michaels.
- 22:42[SPEAKER_01]: and Ray Mysterio and Chris Benoit and just like the best wrestlers on the roster and and he himself became the best wrestler on the roster.
- 22:52[SPEAKER_01]: So I mean Kurt Angle is an anomaly in this business.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_01]: It normally takes you many, many, many, many, many years to get to that level.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_01]: But you know, he was he was thrown into the deep end.
- 23:02[SPEAKER_01]: They said, sink or swim and fuck he he want a gold medal in swimming.
- 23:06[SPEAKER_01]: Not not just a gold medal in Olympics.
- 23:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he did a podcast once where he talked about when he left the WWE, like he actually reached out to UFC and UFC said, absolutely we want you.
- 23:22[SPEAKER_00]: But he couldn't pass a physical with the UFC because of his neck.
- 23:26[SPEAKER_00]: And the UFC said, look, we can't ensure you.
- 23:29[SPEAKER_00]: And we don't like fighters fighting under a waiver, you know?
- 23:34[SPEAKER_00]: Because if you know that you have seen if you've listened to Dana White before, he keeps making a case for how nobody's ever died in his octagon while in boxing we've had we have like three or four a year, you know?
- 23:51[SPEAKER_00]: So he's like, no, we're very, we're very mindful of our athletes, and that's why they suspend athletes in the UFC after very hard fights like, uh, and I like how the internet just jumps into conclusion, like, oh, look at this.
- 24:05[SPEAKER_00]: And when they said the Iliotapuria and Justin Gachy were suspended for a year, uh, you know, well, six months from training.
- 24:12[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm like, well, did they test positive or something like, no, because they were in basically a war, a car wreck.
- 24:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_00]: And they said, look, there's a spent from competition for six months.
- 24:22[SPEAKER_00]: So they're very mindful about that, but have they allowed him to?
- 24:27[SPEAKER_00]: I have no doubt.
- 24:27[SPEAKER_00]: He probably would've been heavyweight champion of the world.
- 24:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he's a band of UFC.
- 24:32[SPEAKER_01]: Like, he's a little jet badass.
- 24:34[SPEAKER_01]: And you hear stories of him and Lesnar go in total, and Lesnar is a much larger individual than Kurt Angle.
- 24:42[SPEAKER_01]: And every story that I heard, Kurt Angle was holding his own
- 24:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I've heard, I've heard that that's happened.
- 24:53[SPEAKER_01]: So they pissed a lot of people off doing those things.
- 24:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, her one time they decided to have a point catch wrestling match instead of a plane.
- 25:02[SPEAKER_00]: And it was all instigated by Vince McMahon, who was the referee.
- 25:06[SPEAKER_00]: Like, if that's not a clown show, I don't know what it is.
- 25:09[SPEAKER_00]: And if I'm on a plane and I see that, I feel like, oh no, now we're crashing.
- 25:17[SPEAKER_00]: If you imagine those two guys running around the plane in a catch wrestling match, like, come on, incredible, incredible.
- 25:25[SPEAKER_01]: And man, wrestling used to be cool.
- 25:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, it can't be again, it can't be again, give it time.
- 25:33[SPEAKER_00]: Last thing, we're in the hat.
- 25:37[SPEAKER_00]: Man, that was bad, right?
- 25:39[SPEAKER_00]: Some embarrassing, yeah.
- 25:41[SPEAKER_00]: They reached exactly where they always reached.
- 25:44[SPEAKER_00]: It's like Groundhog Day.
- 25:45[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 25:46[SPEAKER_00]: You've seen the movie Groundhog Day?
- 25:47[SPEAKER_00]: Oh yeah, love it.
- 25:49[SPEAKER_00]: When Bill Murray gets the, when he's like, where he's walking through the town, he goes, wait a minute.
- 25:54[SPEAKER_00]: And he stops one guy and he goes, wait a minute.
- 25:56[SPEAKER_00]: Today is still tomorrow, is it?
- 25:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 26:01[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 26:01[SPEAKER_00]: Right?
- 26:02[SPEAKER_00]: And then you see that he's like, I feel like I did this yesterday and he's doing his spot in front of the thing and he goes, well, we're here in Punks of the town.
- 26:08[SPEAKER_00]: He filled the office again.
- 26:12[SPEAKER_00]: And we're trying to see if the groundhog is going to see his shadow and he's like he's going to see his shadow.
- 26:18[SPEAKER_00]: So, yeah, it's groundhog day.
- 26:21[SPEAKER_00]: Every four years, we say the same thing.
- 26:23[SPEAKER_00]: Man, they're going to You know, advance to the quarter final.
- 26:27[SPEAKER_00]: So they're going to be better and it's the same thing.
- 26:29[SPEAKER_00]: They get right to the round of 16 and it's a wrap and other years they've actually been much more competitive, including one time against a much better, much better Belgian team.
- 26:41[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, yeah, this time it was just embarrassing from all get out.
- 26:48[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, self self-profess not the biggest soccer guy over here.
- 26:53[SPEAKER_01]: And this is kind of the reason why I'm a dolphins fan.
- 26:57[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a guardians fan.
- 26:58[SPEAKER_01]: I don't need to be a fan of another team that lets me down after getting my hopes up.
- 27:03[SPEAKER_01]: Because my football team and my baseball team they do the same thing, right?
- 27:07[SPEAKER_01]: They're not the worst teams.
- 27:09[SPEAKER_01]: Very rarely are they the worst teams, right?
- 27:11[SPEAKER_01]: but they can't get the job done when it matters most.
- 27:15[SPEAKER_01]: And that's what happened with Team USA, this world cup, they got us all excited.
- 27:20[SPEAKER_01]: Not only were they winning these earlier matches, they were dominating, right?
- 27:25[SPEAKER_01]: They were kicking ass, all except for the one where they basically played the beat team and rested the starters.
- 27:32[SPEAKER_01]: And then you get to the round of 16.
- 27:36[SPEAKER_01]: they got dominated.
- 27:38[SPEAKER_01]: They got embarrassed.
- 27:39[SPEAKER_01]: A 401 blowout and it never really looked close because even when they scored the equalizer, it was like a minute later when Belgium came back and took the lead once more and after that it was it was pretty much nothing through the end of the match.
- 27:55[SPEAKER_01]: It was it was Belgium all the way.
- 27:56[SPEAKER_01]: They dominated.
- 27:57[SPEAKER_01]: They put the points on the board and Team USA didn't and here we are waiting another four years to see if maybe they
- 28:06[SPEAKER_01]: you break through and that's just too much for me to take so I'll see him in four years but I'm tuned in out no more soccer for me.
- 28:14[SPEAKER_01]: I watched the rest of these world cup matches.
- 28:16[SPEAKER_01]: I did end up watching the ending to Columbia and Switzerland yesterday.
- 28:23[SPEAKER_01]: That one was no nail into penalty kicks and the penalty kicks were exciting on that one so I did end up watching that one but I wasn't
- 28:36[SPEAKER_01]: pretty entertaining affair at the end.
- 28:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that was fun to watch.
- 28:40[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's it's one of my favorite things in sports, which is the the great team or the great player in a desperate situation, like there's nothing like it.
- 28:51[SPEAKER_00]: Patrick Mahomes down a couple of touchdowns, Tom Brady down a couple of touchdowns.
- 28:55[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's it's one of my favorite things to watch.
- 28:58[SPEAKER_00]: The Florida Panthers down
- 29:02[SPEAKER_00]: You know, in their day and they're, you know, and there's last run and it's going to be their day soon again, but yeah, well we're back to square one the 2002 team is still the best.
- 29:13[SPEAKER_00]: men's national team member that team made the quarter final beat Portugal in the group stage also beat Mexico in the round of 16 to nothing and lost to a controversial one nothing one mill game against Germany so you know you could have made a case that that team was a controversy away from the semi-finals.
- 29:36[SPEAKER_00]: So there's still the best team ever.
- 29:38[SPEAKER_00]: This team in the end was a severe disappointment.
- 29:44[SPEAKER_01]: All right, how much, real quick, before we go to break.
- 29:46[SPEAKER_01]: How much do you think the ballagoon stuff played into how this went down?
- 29:50[SPEAKER_01]: You know, whether he's gonna play, he's not gonna play and then it's determined he is gonna play but then the world gets their panties in a bunch over it and you know, even team Belgium's talking about, well, we'll see what happens, you know, we, you know, they were making some thinly veiled threats
- 30:06[SPEAKER_01]: Do you think that got into their heads?
- 30:07[SPEAKER_01]: Do you think it became a media circus?
- 30:10[SPEAKER_00]: I think that it affected Team USA more than it affected anybody else.
- 30:14[SPEAKER_00]: Because everybody's saying, oh, that really motivated Belgium.
- 30:16[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, if they needed that to motivate them, then I got Spain 15 to nothing on Friday.
- 30:22[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 30:23[SPEAKER_00]: So, no, I don't think it helped the opponents at all.
- 30:26[SPEAKER_00]: I think it might have hurt Team USA because maybe they were preparing to play without
- 30:32[SPEAKER_00]: and then all of a sudden they get him 24 hours before and they re-figure what they're going to do and maybe that was a distraction then, you know, that's why I was, I felt that what they should have done is just started the game without him and then bring him in at half time or something.
- 30:48[SPEAKER_00]: You know, so they could continue their same game plan that they worked on for for almost four days, you know, right.
- 30:55[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, we're going to go to break and we'll come back.
- 30:58[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to be dolphin intensive.
- 31:00[SPEAKER_00]: But first, these words.
- 31:02[SPEAKER_00]: All right, and we're back.
- 31:04[SPEAKER_00]: By the way, if you want to talk to us more, you want to interact with us with both of us because we're both on there.
- 31:09[SPEAKER_00]: You got to go to only fence and to do that you got to go to discord and when you go to this code you go to discord.gg4dslash only fins join out desktop avoid the apple up charges it's $299 read only it's $499 all access so do that by the way I put a link 12 this on every single
- 31:38[SPEAKER_00]: shows so you could go on there it is right there you could go on I don't know why this is showing up yep there are no no live viewers so I don't know why the hell that's showing up but there it is so yeah you could check that out and I don't have time to take this off so I guess we're just doing it
- 32:09[SPEAKER_00]: dolphins, man.
- 32:10[SPEAKER_00]: It's like I've been watching what oh, there it is.
- 32:15[SPEAKER_00]: Bang.
- 32:16[SPEAKER_00]: Look at that.
- 32:17[SPEAKER_00]: So I've been watching some of the content of the NFL and yeah, the basically saying that the team is just not going to be very good.
- 32:29[SPEAKER_00]: But there's also like a misconception of what this team is and some of those rankings have already come up like I don't know in which world and I saw and I know that it's not Jeremy Father doing these rankings.
- 32:40[SPEAKER_00]: These are supposedly NFL GMs.
- 32:44[SPEAKER_00]: Explain to me how Devon HN is the eighth best running back in the NFL.
- 32:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he's not a point blank.
- 32:52[SPEAKER_01]: He's not actually wrote an article about this for the Finn side earlier this week.
- 32:57[SPEAKER_01]: And I broke it down by the numbers.
- 32:59[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 33:01[SPEAKER_01]: He led the league in yards per carry by a full half yard over
- 33:07[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, Derek Henry and James Cook, uh, Devon H. and 5.7 yards per carry, Derek Henry and James Cook, 5.2 yards per carry.
- 33:16[SPEAKER_01]: So almost a half yard better than than both players that were tied for second.
- 33:20[SPEAKER_01]: He was top five in rushing yards.
- 33:24[SPEAKER_01]: He was top six in receptions for running backs, uh, top four for receiving yards for running backs.
- 33:30[SPEAKER_01]: Like all around his lowest metric was total touchdowns and even then he was tied for
- 33:36[SPEAKER_01]: for most touchdowns by running back.
- 33:37[SPEAKER_01]: So if you average all this out together, in my mind, he can't be any worse than fifth or sixth.
- 33:45[SPEAKER_01]: And even had one exact in that article who said, if you're starting today, you know, HN, HN probably top three of players you're going to pick to start your team with at the running back position when you consider age as well.
- 33:59[SPEAKER_01]: He's still a young player and hopefully still an ascending player.
- 34:04[SPEAKER_01]: No, I mean, at worst, fifth or six, you're going to rank B. John over him, probably Jimmy or Gives over him, Christian McCaffrey may be, and then you could make an argument, like he, he belonged somewhere in there.
- 34:17[SPEAKER_01]: They had, I think they had, say, one, Barclay at, at third or fourth.
- 34:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because I think they had Barclay over McCaffrey on that list.
- 34:25[SPEAKER_01]: And if you're basing it off of last season, that's just absurd.
- 34:29[SPEAKER_01]: Barclay had a down year, you know, his, his year prior is 2024 season was phenomenal, his first season with the Eagles.
- 34:36[SPEAKER_01]: But last year, Barclay was was low level top 10.
- 34:42[SPEAKER_01]: HN had a much better year than Barclay did last year.
- 34:45[SPEAKER_01]: But HN plays on the dolphins and we know how the media views the Miami dolphins.
- 34:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's never, it's never pretty their assessment of the, even when they're good, right?
- 34:59[SPEAKER_00]: Even when, when they were actually pretty good, their assessment is never rosy for the Miami Dolphins.
- 35:05[SPEAKER_00]: It hasn't been that way for a while.
- 35:07[SPEAKER_00]: I do remember in the early 2000s when they were coming off of Jimmy, even with day one stead.
- 35:12[SPEAKER_00]: like they had some hype like there was a couple of teams that had Super Bowl hype and then when cover sports illustrated yeah that was when Nick Saban when Nick Saban and he acquired a Dante call pepper and yeah and I know they put them on the cover and they had Jason Taylor
- 35:38[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I remember all of that, you know, like they were considered like, yep, these guys, yeah, they have a shot, have a shot to be special.
- 35:48[SPEAKER_00]: Or Jimmy actually said that one year, but yeah, I hasn't been that way for 20 years.
- 35:52[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you know, but it's the same thing everywhere, you know, when a team, you know, bites you in the ass over and over and over again, you tend to not want to repeat the same mistake, you know, so.
- 36:05[SPEAKER_00]: The media has been off the bandwagon for a very long time.
- 36:09[SPEAKER_00]: And then it would really like to un-company.
- 36:11[SPEAKER_00]: So...
- 36:13[SPEAKER_01]: I believe while HN checked in at number eight, I think I don't know if it was ESPN, but another ranking of quarterbacks had Malik Willis as the 30th best starting quarterback in the NFL.
- 36:27[SPEAKER_01]: And I get it, right?
- 36:28[SPEAKER_01]: You know, if you're if you're basing it off of what he's done, he had some phenomenal
- 36:37[SPEAKER_01]: Performances filling in for Jordan love with Green Bay his time as a starter on a terrible Titans team after being drafted in the third round is rookie year.
- 36:47[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously that wasn't going to go well But he looked great filling in for Jordan love with the packers, but you know people are saying Oh, well, that's that's LaFlor you know you take them away from LaFlor and it's not gonna be the same.
- 37:00[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't know I mean
- 37:03[SPEAKER_01]: 30th seems a little low for a guy with his athletic ability and his potential and what he did last year probably bumps him up a few notches but not that just they just don't rate dolphins high on these things they and until the team proves them otherwise I guess we're just gonna have to deal with it yeah and let me ask you this because I think it's important
- 37:28[SPEAKER_00]: Is there a unit on this team that they can lean on and say, this is a top 10 unit and this can get us through games and get us through wins?
- 37:39[SPEAKER_00]: Because I have an answer for that.
- 37:42[SPEAKER_00]: That's a bit off the wall.
- 37:44[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like my answers are a little off the wall as well.
- 37:47[SPEAKER_01]: So I'll let you go first.
- 37:50[SPEAKER_01]: All right, this is not based on past production, certainly not based on past production.
- 37:58[SPEAKER_01]: don't laugh.
- 38:00[SPEAKER_01]: I think the offensive line has the potential to be a top 10 unit this year.
- 38:04[SPEAKER_01]: I think the offensive line has the potential to be a top 10 unit if Kate and Proctor pans out.
- 38:11[SPEAKER_01]: And if Savannah and I are going to the right side shows improvement.
- 38:16[SPEAKER_01]: He doesn't even have to be like top half, right?
- 38:19[SPEAKER_01]: But just better than he was last year, which statistically he was the worst guard in the NFL last year.
- 38:25[SPEAKER_01]: But if he moves over to his natural side, Proctor comes in, he slots right next to Patrick Paul.
- 38:34[SPEAKER_01]: and you get a quarterback with the mobility of Malik Willis, who, you know, obviously, to a tongue of Aloha, had his strengths.
- 38:41[SPEAKER_01]: Mobility was not one of them.
- 38:43[SPEAKER_01]: You know, although he was pretty elusive in the pocket.
- 38:47[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, I think by the end of the year, this offensive line might surprise us and they might be a top 10 unit when it's all said and done.
- 38:55[SPEAKER_00]: That's my answer as well.
- 38:57[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, great.
- 38:57[SPEAKER_00]: That's my answer as well, it's the offensive line.
- 39:00[SPEAKER_00]: If there's a unit on this team,
- 39:02[SPEAKER_00]: They could lean on and there's a bunch of hypotheticals, okay?
- 39:07[SPEAKER_00]: First of all, you need to, you need the entire unit to stay healthy.
- 39:10[SPEAKER_00]: You need to in the pool of Buffalo Bills from a couple of years ago, where everybody played every single snap and a season.
- 39:16[SPEAKER_00]: So you can't take any injuries, all right?
- 39:19[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe you can miss a game here or there, but you're essentially going to have to be injury free, especially at tackle, all right, both tackles have to be injury free, that's asking a ton already from Austin Jackson, but if you do that, there is the potential, okay, where you're going to have an all pro at center, you're going to have a near pro bowler or possibly a pro bowler at left tackle.
- 39:46[SPEAKER_00]: And then you're going to have a rookie at left guard that if they're good, obviously it's because he's pretty damn good.
- 39:54[SPEAKER_00]: on the offensive line.
- 39:55[SPEAKER_00]: And then your weakness is what a second round pick from last year, moving to his natural position.
- 40:02[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, it's not a crazy case to make.
- 40:05[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, there's a lot of wishful thinking here.
- 40:09[SPEAKER_00]: Like a lot of things have to go right for this to work.
- 40:13[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, if there's a unit that they can lean on and say, look, this is a top 10 unit.
- 40:18[SPEAKER_00]: This is gonna help us win games.
- 40:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think it's the offensive line.
- 40:22[SPEAKER_00]: It's the one unit I look at on the team and I say, there's something there, like this could be good, right?
- 40:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think.
- 40:31[SPEAKER_01]: I'll give an honorary or an honorable mention to the line backing unit if Jacob Rodriguez turns out to be as good as we we hope he does you know Jordan Brooks already on record is saying he thinks Rodriguez last year at Texas Tech had the greatest season for a college linebacker of all time.
- 40:54[SPEAKER_01]: He said that he said that I'll
- 40:58[SPEAKER_01]: Now, they went to the same school.
- 41:00[SPEAKER_01]: Jordan Brooks also a Texas Tech alum and now their teammates on the Miami Dolphin.
- 41:04[SPEAKER_01]: So you can see why he'd be hyping him up.
- 41:06[SPEAKER_01]: But Jordan Brooks, he said he thought Jacob Rodriguez his final year at Texas Tech last year was the greatest college linebacker season ever.
- 41:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, now I'm fine of saying this and this is the other way and I know we're spreading a lot of hope here, okay, but that's all we have right now before we actually get to see the team, right?
- 41:30[SPEAKER_00]: The other thing that I can see happening is, I'm fine to say in this and it's odd that I'm going to say this because that don't have this either.
- 41:39[SPEAKER_00]: But I'm fine to say and you want stars on offense and you kind of want like a nondescript lunch pale group on defense, right?
- 41:48[SPEAKER_00]: Like you don't want a bunch of stars on defense because they cost money.
- 41:52[SPEAKER_00]: Like if you're paying an edge player
- 41:56[SPEAKER_00]: the rest of your edge players are not gonna cost $40 million.
- 41:59[SPEAKER_00]: They're probably gonna split $10 million between four of them, okay?
- 42:04[SPEAKER_00]: So you're not gonna have depth.
- 42:05[SPEAKER_00]: You take one injury right there, you're screwed.
- 42:08[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so I've always felt that you want to have more of a non-descript connected group on defense.
- 42:17[SPEAKER_00]: And on offense, you want to load up a star.
- 42:19[SPEAKER_00]: She just wants stars everywhere.
- 42:20[SPEAKER_00]: You want to start tight.
- 42:21[SPEAKER_00]: If you could have a star at every skill position and three on the offensive line, that's what you want.
- 42:27[SPEAKER_00]: So they don't have that on offense because they pretty much have one star on offense and depending on who you talk to two with Aaron Broer because I do believe Aaron Broer is a top three center in the NFL.
- 42:41[SPEAKER_00]: But on defense that's what they have.
- 42:44[SPEAKER_00]: They have kind of a a connected group.
- 42:47[SPEAKER_00]: We've got to watch them play because they could easily just blow up in their face, you know, once
- 42:54[SPEAKER_00]: But do you see it the same way that I do like that this defense there is a possibility here that they'll play connected and they'll be better than what the paper says they are.
- 43:08[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, it's not out of the realm of possibility, especially when you factor in that our new head coach is a defensive minded guy, you know, Jeff Haffley, and it's specialty a secondary and when you look at the Miami Dolphins of their many weaknesses secondary certainly is one, possibly the biggest weakness on the team between, you know, secondary, wide receiver, it's kind of a coin flip there.
- 43:35[SPEAKER_01]: But if, if, if, if halfway can get his guys to buy in and play as a unit, right?
- 43:40[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, I think a lot of times over the last few seasons.
- 43:44[SPEAKER_01]: And that's what happens when you fill your roster with those stars that you were talking about.
- 43:48[SPEAKER_01]: Alph is you get people that want to go out there and freelance.
- 43:50[SPEAKER_01]: They want to do their own thing.
- 43:51[SPEAKER_01]: They think they're above the scheme.
- 43:53[SPEAKER_01]: Why don't have to do that?
- 43:54[SPEAKER_01]: I'm better than that.
- 43:55[SPEAKER_01]: If I, if I, if I do my thing,
- 43:58[SPEAKER_01]: then we're going to win.
- 43:59[SPEAKER_01]: When in reality, you need to play together.
- 44:01[SPEAKER_01]: Football is the ultimate team sport.
- 44:04[SPEAKER_01]: You got 11 guys on your team on the field at any given moment.
- 44:09[SPEAKER_01]: And you all got to play together.
- 44:10[SPEAKER_01]: It only takes one guy to...
- 44:14[SPEAKER_01]: freelance the wrong way and do the wrong thing and now we've got a busted coverage and the other team is scoring a long touchdown, right?
- 44:23[SPEAKER_01]: So if half of it can get this team playing together and you know some of these young guys can develop if some of these defensive tackles from last year can develop a little bit and the run game is a little bit better on the defensive side of the football, they'll have a chance to keep the dolphins in games, you know what I mean?
- 44:42[SPEAKER_01]: And really, that's kind of all we're hoping for and looking for nine, 10 wins would be fantastic.
- 44:48[SPEAKER_01]: It's unrealistic looking at five to six wins most likely, hopefully not less than that.
- 44:55[SPEAKER_01]: But you want to see the team being competitive, especially as we get towards the end of the year when they get time to gel together, when they get time
- 45:04[SPEAKER_01]: to master half-lee scheme.
- 45:06[SPEAKER_01]: And if that comes together and those things happen, then that can give us hope heading into next off season when the team does have money to spend in free agency, when the team will have some continuity under the new head coach and possibly, if Bobby Slowix stays on, the same offensive scheme.
- 45:25[SPEAKER_01]: And you're hoping that this is how you build a contending team over the next couple of seasons.
- 45:35[SPEAKER_01]: Like you said, oh, there's a lot of, there's a lot of ifs in in in those scenarios and there's a lot of finger and toes being crossed and and hoping and and hopefully there's that word again this can finally be the group that gets it right the front office that gets it right the coaching staff that gets it right it's been a long time been a lot of lean years in Miami and even our best years ended.
- 46:03[SPEAKER_01]: in very, very disappointing ways.
- 46:06[SPEAKER_00]: Mm-hmm, absolutely agree.
- 46:07[SPEAKER_00]: Now, we don't know anything about this guy, so all we have is vibes to go by.
- 46:13[SPEAKER_00]: But what are the vibes telling you on Jeff Haffley?
- 46:16[SPEAKER_00]: What kind of headcoat she's going to be?
- 46:18[SPEAKER_00]: Because I've said it before, you know?
- 46:20[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm not sure you agreed with me, although you were like, ah, I could see it, you know?
- 46:26[SPEAKER_00]: In my opinion, look, a lot of people don't care about the wind totals from Las Vegas, I do.
- 46:32[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, when told is that four and a half, four point five, beat it.
- 46:38[SPEAKER_00]: When five, if you win five, I'll be pretty happy with the job that Jeff Haffley does.
- 46:44[SPEAKER_00]: If he wins less than four or he wins four or less, I'm gonna be like, hey, you know, I don't know.
- 46:53[SPEAKER_00]: But what are your, what are the vibes telling you on Jeff Haffley because
- 46:58[SPEAKER_00]: He seems to be of, look, we just got off a guy that was all vibes, right?
- 47:04[SPEAKER_00]: Like back McDaniel just had, he just exuded confidence, until the team lost a couple of games and all of a sudden he did not exude confidence anymore.
- 47:12[SPEAKER_00]: Like nobody exuded more confidence when we were winning than Mike McDaniel.
- 47:17[SPEAKER_00]: When we're winning, when we're 5 in 1, 5 in 2, 7 in 3, whatever, 8 in 3, 8 in 4, you know,
- 47:26[SPEAKER_00]: And you listen to a Mike McDaniel press conference.
- 47:28[SPEAKER_00]: You feel good about it.
- 47:29[SPEAKER_00]: You feel good about yourself.
- 47:31[SPEAKER_00]: You feel like, you know, we can win this Super Bowl.
- 47:33[SPEAKER_00]: You know, this guy is just filling me up with confidence.
- 47:36[SPEAKER_00]: We lose a couple and Mike McDaniel will get up there and be like, um, and you're like, okay, confidence is not high.
- 47:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so all we have to go buy our vibes.
- 47:46[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm asking you a vibe question.
- 47:48[SPEAKER_00]: What are your vibes?
- 47:50[SPEAKER_00]: What are the vibes with Jeff Haffley so far?
- 47:53[SPEAKER_01]: so far so far I feel good right if you look at our last two head coaches you just talked about McDaniel you know you hit it you hit the nail on the head there.
- 48:01[SPEAKER_01]: McDaniel McDaniel didn't always feel like the adult in the room right and I feel like your head coach needs to be the adult in the room right and then you look at Brian Flores.
- 48:14[SPEAKER_01]: Brian Flores was the opposite of Mike McDaniel.
- 48:22[SPEAKER_01]: He ran a tight ship, two tight.
- 48:25[SPEAKER_01]: He had you walking on eggshells in that locker room.
- 48:28[SPEAKER_01]: So the point where his players didn't like him, he didn't like his players.
- 48:32[SPEAKER_01]: There were open blowups in the locker room during half time of football games.
- 48:38[SPEAKER_01]: And he felt like the guy that you could never impress, right?
- 48:42[SPEAKER_01]: He was never gonna be like, wow, you did a great job.
- 48:45[SPEAKER_01]: He was always gonna be the guy that was like, yeah, we won, but.
- 48:49[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 48:50[SPEAKER_01]: Where Mike McDaniel was the opposite?
- 48:52[SPEAKER_01]: Hell yeah, we won.
- 48:53[SPEAKER_01]: We're the best.
- 48:53[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to overlook all of the things that we may have done poorly That's why nothing ever got fixed in the Mike McDaniel era.
- 49:00[SPEAKER_01]: That's why short yardage was always a problem.
- 49:03[SPEAKER_01]: That's why challenges was always a problem That's why timing and clock management was always a problem because when you're winning he said that we don't need a win
- 49:11[SPEAKER_01]: we win despite these things.
- 49:13[SPEAKER_01]: I don't care.
- 49:13[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not going to look at those things.
- 49:15[SPEAKER_01]: Whereas Bryan Flores would be like, yeah, we won, but you did this, this is never let anyone feel good about their performance.
- 49:22[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 49:23[SPEAKER_01]: So I feel, I feel at this point, and no games have been played yet.
- 49:29[SPEAKER_01]: but I feel like Jeff Hathley is a happy medium between the two, right?
- 49:33[SPEAKER_01]: He's not going to overlook the things that you're doing poorly, even if the results turn out the way you want them to, but he's also not going to harp on mistakes to the point where you lose confidence in yourself and your ability.
- 49:46[SPEAKER_01]: Confidence for a professional athlete means so much.
- 49:51[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you're playing against the best of the best at all times.
- 49:55[SPEAKER_01]: There's there's very few stinkers in the NFL.
- 49:58[SPEAKER_01]: If you made it to the NFL, you're a damn good professional athlete.
- 50:02[SPEAKER_01]: And once you kill a professional athlete's confidence in his psyche, it's hard to get it back and Brian Flores was the king of doing that.
- 50:09[SPEAKER_01]: So I think Jeff Hathley's kind of a happy medium between McDaniel and Flores.
- 50:14[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm hoping that is the right recipe for success for the team.
- 50:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, these are, you know, I hate to call them pampered athletes, but they are.
- 50:23[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you know, they're catered to.
- 50:25[SPEAKER_00]: And nobody wants to go to work, even though you're getting paid handsomely.
- 50:28[SPEAKER_00]: Nobody wants to go to work to a place where it's
- 50:31[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's all acrimonious all the time.
- 50:33[SPEAKER_00]: It was a lot of yelling, unhappy people.
- 50:37[SPEAKER_00]: And your head coach may be, you know, he might not hate you, but it seems like he hates you.
- 50:43[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and that's what was happening all the time.
- 50:45[SPEAKER_00]: Mike, we've done it was the opposite.
- 50:47[SPEAKER_00]: Like, some guys and some guys have come from other programs and they realize this is not how we did it when we were successful elsewhere.
- 50:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 50:56[SPEAKER_00]: And you go to, to camp, you go to work, and you're like, whoa, this is like, oh, this is like a country club here.
- 51:03[SPEAKER_00]: No, it was pretty fun.
- 51:05[SPEAKER_00]: Like, once the tea time, you know, what's for lunch today?
- 51:08[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, you know, what's the, what's the cafeteria like today?
- 51:12[SPEAKER_00]: Like are we having, we having tacos today?
- 51:14[SPEAKER_00]: Is today taco Tuesday?
- 51:15[SPEAKER_00]: Like it's, it was very relaxed, very laid back.
- 51:18[SPEAKER_00]: When you're winning, it's beautiful.
- 51:20[SPEAKER_00]: Because you think you're just gonna, you know, you're gonna nap your way right to the Super Bowl.
- 51:25[SPEAKER_00]: you know, and wake me up in the Super Bowl, wake me up in the Super Bowl and we'll get a game plan together and yeah, we'll beat the NFC, you know, whoever we play just to work that way, man.
- 51:36[SPEAKER_00]: It's a lot of steps before you get there and too many times this team just stumbled upon one of those those steps that they had to go through.
- 51:46[SPEAKER_00]: And one problem that they had under Mike McDaniels that there was always a destination, right?
- 51:50[SPEAKER_00]: And it seemed like this team would
- 51:56[SPEAKER_00]: like in 223 and 222 was obviously what the destination was, which was just make the playoffs, right?
- 52:04[SPEAKER_00]: And of course, two of Mrs. the rest of the season toward the end of the year, they lose a hardbreaker against the the packers.
- 52:12[SPEAKER_00]: And here they are trying to eek into the playoffs to finally do against the jets.
- 52:17[SPEAKER_00]: and they actually played a really, really tough game the following week against the bills, right?
- 52:22[SPEAKER_00]: But in 2023, it seemed like all year was building up to the season that came against Tennessee just snuffed out.
- 52:31[SPEAKER_00]: And when they beat the Cowboys on national television, it seemed like they just ex-hailed and said, we overcame it, we overcame it all.
- 52:41[SPEAKER_00]: And we made the playoffs with three weeks to spare, and I think of myself, buddy, used to have everything in front of you, go get it, and did it not.
- 52:50[SPEAKER_00]: The rest of the time, it was always that one game.
- 52:54[SPEAKER_00]: And this past year, you saw it.
- 52:56[SPEAKER_00]: Like, Mike McDaniel drove by the elbow room to troll Bill's fans after we went some non-district game, non-descript game in early December.
- 53:07[SPEAKER_00]: Like, what in the hell is that?
- 53:09[SPEAKER_00]: you know, but they treated it as destination.
- 53:13[SPEAKER_00]: And then, of course, they play the biggest game of their lives, which is the Steelers game.
- 53:18[SPEAKER_00]: And they laid an egg in the second half after playing pretty damn hard in that first half.
- 53:23[SPEAKER_00]: So, that's what those teams under Mike McDaniel always had.
- 53:28[SPEAKER_00]: This team, the Fives,
- 53:31[SPEAKER_00]: I'm feeling better about the vibes because it seems it's a lot more workman-like team and it looks like, and especially since this stripped it down so far, that they're gonna bring it up under their image, like these are gonna be there guys, almost in year one.
- 53:47[SPEAKER_00]: You know?
- 53:48[SPEAKER_00]: It's not like they're inheriting a bunch of guys.
- 53:50[SPEAKER_00]: Like there is no time to kill here.
- 53:51[SPEAKER_00]: There's not even no jail in water here.
- 53:53[SPEAKER_00]: Although there should be.
- 53:55[SPEAKER_00]: But, you know, there's a lot of, you know, a lot of these guys, like, what are they really inheriting?
- 53:59[SPEAKER_00]: They're, they're, they're inheriting like very, very small core of the previous team onto this new team.
- 54:06[SPEAKER_00]: So this is essentially already Jeff Halfley's team.
- 54:08[SPEAKER_00]: So whatever he's going to say, whatever he's going to tell the team in the locker room, I believe it's going to take.
- 54:14[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, I think that the vibes are going to be pretty damn good with this team under Jeff Halfley.
- 54:20[SPEAKER_00]: And I do get good vibes from him so far.
- 54:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yep, so I mean, let's hope that they they over perform year one, they they start to really compete year two and by year three man like my expectation for this team by year three, especially with the the influx of cap base next off season is you should be competing for the division you should be competing once you should be a playoff team and you should you should be winning games when you get to the playoffs because
- 54:52[SPEAKER_01]: That's where they come from, right?
- 54:53[SPEAKER_01]: They come from the Green Bay Packers.
- 54:55[SPEAKER_01]: And that is the expectation in Green Bay.
- 54:59[SPEAKER_01]: And it's often the reality in Green Bay as well.
- 55:02[SPEAKER_01]: Very rarely over the last quarter century have the Packers been terrible.
- 55:06[SPEAKER_01]: And it's usually usually due to injuries when it does happen.
- 55:09[SPEAKER_01]: So we'll see what happens.
- 55:14[SPEAKER_01]: We're getting closer.
- 55:14[SPEAKER_01]: We're getting closer.
- 55:16[SPEAKER_01]: Training camp starts in just a couple of weeks.
- 55:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, 20, 21 days, 20 days from today is when it starts up.
- 55:26[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, you talked about the progression.
- 55:29[SPEAKER_00]: I see it pretty much the same way.
- 55:30[SPEAKER_00]: I want them to beat that four and a half number.
- 55:33[SPEAKER_00]: Get five wins, man.
- 55:34[SPEAKER_00]: You know, get five wins.
- 55:36[SPEAKER_00]: You know, if you have some miraculous run to seven or eight wins, let's give them coach of the year.
- 55:43[SPEAKER_00]: But just, you know, get five wins.
- 55:45[SPEAKER_00]: Let's beat that number.
- 55:48[SPEAKER_00]: Get into the hunt, in the hunt bracket, in the hunt, in the hunt graphic, or make it until the last week of the season for the playoffs.
- 55:59[SPEAKER_00]: Even if you needed 400 things to happen, but make it to the last year, last week of the season, okay, be a threat for the playoffs next year.
- 56:08[SPEAKER_00]: And then the third year, yes, it's time.
- 56:11[SPEAKER_00]: Go do something.
- 56:13[SPEAKER_00]: When a division, when a playoff game, do something.
- 56:17[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 56:18[SPEAKER_00]: I guess I'll ask you this last question before we get out of here and I guess I'll give you my answer first.
- 56:23[SPEAKER_00]: There's one thing you need to see this year.
- 56:27[SPEAKER_00]: It's what I'll answer first, Michael says to be good because if not if not.
- 56:34[SPEAKER_00]: We have an issue going into the offseason that we're going to have to address if he's not a capable quarterback and look he could be absolutely fabulous.
- 56:43[SPEAKER_00]: But if you take an entry and you miss a six or seven games, I'm in the first round for a quarterback.
- 56:49[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because we can't be doing this forever.
- 56:54[SPEAKER_00]: We can't relive this once again, right?
- 56:58[SPEAKER_00]: So that's what I'm looking at the most.
- 57:00[SPEAKER_00]: And I hate to just put the entire season on just one, the performance of one player, but I want them to be good.
- 57:07[SPEAKER_00]: If he is good,
- 57:09[SPEAKER_00]: Man, it's gonna open up all kinds of possibilities for this team in the off season to be a much better team, much, much, much quicker because if he's not, you kind of just essentially punted the season just to have a healthier balance sheet, you know, and a healthier crop of younger players.
- 57:31[SPEAKER_00]: But guess what, you're back in that boat and you're looking for that quarterback.
- 57:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's being incredibly frustrating.
- 57:38[SPEAKER_00]: So what is the one most important thing that you want to see this coming season?
- 57:45[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I do agree with you, Alf, that you do want to see, you want to see a successful season from Malik, but I think what I want to see kind of goes back to those talking points with Flores and McDaniel.
- 58:00[SPEAKER_01]: I want to see a team stick together
- 58:04[SPEAKER_01]: play together play hard and not crumble when they face adversity, when they when they start losing games, when they get embarrassed a time or two by a team that's clearly better than that, whether that's the Denver Broncos or the Kansas City Chiefs, you know, if Mahomes is playing week three,
- 58:23[SPEAKER_01]: What does the team, how do they respond?
- 58:25[SPEAKER_01]: Do they respond by bickering and infighting?
- 58:29[SPEAKER_01]: Or do they respond by lifting each other up, playing together the next week, coming back and practicing hard after taking those losses?
- 58:38[SPEAKER_01]: Do they continue to support their new head coach?
- 58:41[SPEAKER_01]: Do they continue to buy in to what he's selling?
- 58:45[SPEAKER_01]: Are they going to play hard for him?
- 58:48[SPEAKER_01]: And really follow his vision, you know what I mean?
- 58:52[SPEAKER_01]: And if that happens, then I do think the team does get to that five-win mark that you were discussing.
- 58:58[SPEAKER_01]: And I think it allows you to have hope for 2027, 2028, and beyond, because at some point, they're going to get, they're going to have to get this all figured out, right?
- 59:09[SPEAKER_01]: They can't be terrible forever, candy.
- 59:11[SPEAKER_01]: I hope not.
- 59:12[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to knock on wood real quick, just to,
- 59:14[SPEAKER_01]: just in Brown, the Cleveland Browns, you know, like a word.
- 59:19[SPEAKER_01]: They would.
- 59:20[SPEAKER_01]: But I think I think from just a just a 10,000 foot view, that's what I want.
- 59:26[SPEAKER_01]: I want a team that doesn't, doesn't, you know, start blaming each other, pointing fingers when things are going wrong, because that happened all
- 59:35[SPEAKER_01]: the time under Mike McDaniel.
- 59:38[SPEAKER_01]: He did not have his thumb on that locker room.
- 59:41[SPEAKER_01]: That locker room ran a muck and we all knew it and you saw it time in and time out and two was saying something stupid and Tyreeks doing something stupid and and it never ended with that team you know.
- 59:53[SPEAKER_01]: So I want to see a team that sticks together, plays together, plays hard and plays competitive football throughout
- 1:00:05[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, like the great Pat Riley once said, you never learn anything about your team while you're winning.
- 1:00:12[SPEAKER_00]: You only learn about your team in two instances, while you're losing and after you have won.
- 1:00:21[SPEAKER_00]: Now, this team has never experienced winning.
- 1:00:25[SPEAKER_00]: So we've only really learned about this team after they've lost, right?
- 1:00:30[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, I completely agree with you.
- 1:00:33[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I want to see this team, you know, you don't have to win every single game.
- 1:00:37[SPEAKER_00]: Just don't be embarrassed, you know, compete, you know, look organized, right?
- 1:00:44[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, look organized.
- 1:00:45[SPEAKER_00]: Like that was like that's as good a term as I can use, organized.
- 1:00:52[SPEAKER_00]: All right, we're going to call it right here.
- 1:00:54[SPEAKER_00]: That's the season.
- 1:00:56[SPEAKER_00]: And we're ending on our 55th episode all times, this is our third season of the off season.
- 1:01:02[SPEAKER_00]: We'll be back next year, okay, but it's going to be a while.
- 1:01:05[SPEAKER_00]: No, you know, returning next week, right?
- 1:01:08[SPEAKER_00]: Three years of carry.
- 1:01:09[SPEAKER_00]: Our podcast returns next week after our long annual hiatus, we deserved it.
- 1:01:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, but.
- 1:01:17[SPEAKER_00]: Mary, do you want to plug anything for people to follow you on social media or what are you going on?
- 1:01:25[SPEAKER_01]: Sure, there it is on my name right there.
- 1:01:27[SPEAKER_01]: You could follow me.
- 1:01:28[SPEAKER_01]: Embrace 13 on Twitter, Instagram.
- 1:01:32[SPEAKER_01]: I don't have a Facebook.
- 1:01:34[SPEAKER_01]: I don't do TikTok.
- 1:01:36[SPEAKER_01]: None of that stuff, but if you want to give me a follow that's cool.
- 1:01:39[SPEAKER_01]: If you want to read my articles on the fin cider,
