Transcript
- 0:01The spiritual path tends to breed considerable opposition
- 0:04from friends, family and associates because it takes the
- 0:08seeker along an entirely different line of development
- 0:12that does not necessarily meet the expectations of those
- 0:15people. It is a path less travelled.
- 0:20It is not infrequent that appeals are made to the seeker
- 0:23to accept the normal mode of life of the society.
- 0:26Get a career, earn money, start a family, relate to friends and
- 0:31family on the normal superficial level that focuses on
- 0:35entertainment, distraction, socializing, gossip, and
- 0:40comparing oneself on external factors to others.
- 0:44With appeals to following the family traditions and supporting
- 0:48the family. The seeker is berated for
- 0:51declining in favor of spiritual development.
- 0:55In many cases, they are treated as mentally imbalanced and
- 0:59subjected to pressure for psychological review and
- 1:02counselling. In the more general society,
- 1:06spiritual seekers are frequently treated as odd, out of sync with
- 1:11the society and its objectives, and maligned for the life
- 1:15choices they make. There can be instances of
- 1:19bullying, social shaming, et cetera, for their failure to
- 1:24make something of themselves. If the seeker pays attention to
- 1:28all of this negativity, he may continually experience episodes
- 1:33of self doubt, depression, or concern that somehow they are
- 1:38not doing what they should be doing.
- 1:41The seeker's vital nature, seeking for excuses to obtain
- 1:45positive affirmation from the social world around them or for
- 1:49gratification of various desires, may accentuate these
- 1:53doubts to disrupt the continuity, focus and intensity
- 1:59of the efforts. When a seeker is called to the
- 2:03spiritual path, he needs therefore to become impervious
- 2:07to the negative comments and pressure and remain focused and
- 2:12fixed on the spiritual objective.
- 2:15Mixing spirituality with any other mental, vital or physical
- 2:19motive or purpose creates the opening for these doubts and
- 2:24distractions to take hold, the Dhammapada states Quote.
- 2:31As the elephant on the battlefield endures the arrow
- 2:34shot from the bow, so also shall I patiently bear insult.
- 2:40For truly there are many of evil mind in the world.
- 2:45End Quote. The mother notes quote the verse
- 2:51gives some very wise advice. The war elephant who has been
- 2:55well trained does not start running away as soon as he
- 2:57receives an arrow. He continues to advance and
- 3:01bears the pain with no change in his attitude of heroic
- 3:05resistance. Those who wish to follow the
- 3:08true path will naturally be exposed to the attacks of all
- 3:12forms of bad will, which not only do not understand, but
- 3:17generally hate what they do not understand.
- 3:22If you are worried, grieved or even discouraged by the
- 3:26malicious stupidities that men say about you, you will not
- 3:31advance far on the way. And such things come to you not
- 3:36because you are unlucky or because your lot is not a happy
- 3:40one, but because, On the contrary, the Divine
- 3:44consciousness and the Divine grace take your resolution
- 3:49seriously and allow the circumstances to become a
- 3:53touchstone on your way to see whether your resolution is
- 3:56sincere and whether you are strong enough to face the
- 4:01difficulties. Therefore, if anyone sneers at
- 4:05you or says something that is not very charitable, the first
- 4:10thing you should do is look within yourself for whatever
- 4:12weakness or imperfection has allowed such a thing to happen,
- 4:17and not to be disconsolate, indignant, or aggrieved because
- 4:22people do not appreciate you at what you think to be your true
- 4:26value. On the contrary, you must be
- 4:29thankful to the Divine grace for having pointed out to you the
- 4:33weakness or imperfection or deformation that you must
- 4:38correct. Therefore, instead of being
- 4:41unhappy, you should be fully satisfied and derive advantage,
- 4:46a great advantage, from the harm that was intended against you.
- 4:51Besides, if you truly want to follow the path and practice
- 4:55yoga, you must not do it for appreciation or honour.
- 5:00You must do it because it is an imperative need of your being,
- 5:04because you cannot be happy in any other way.
- 5:08Whether people appreciate you or do not appreciate you, it is of
- 5:13absolutely no importance. You may tell yourself beforehand
- 5:18that the further you are from ordinary men, foreign to the
- 5:22ordinary mode of being, the less people will appreciate you quite
- 5:26naturally, because they will not understand you.
- 5:30And I repeat, it has absolutely no importance.
- 5:36True sincerity consists in advancing on the way, because
- 5:40you cannot do otherwise to consecrate yourself to the
- 5:44Divine life, because you cannot do otherwise, to seek
- 5:49transformation of your being and come out into the light, because
- 5:54you cannot do otherwise, because it is the purpose of your life.
- 6:00When it is like that, you may be sure that you are on the right
- 6:05path. End Quote Reference Srioro Bindu
