- 0:00Oh, welcome back to A Hamster with a Blunt Knife, the Doctor
- 0:06Who Commentary Podcast, where today we are back in the realms
- 0:12of fan films to watch the second of the amazing Barbara Benedetti
- 0:19Doctor Who stories. And we've just watched a fan
- 0:23review video of this fan film and he said it was very hard to
- 0:28get through. It just goes to prove don't
- 0:30listen to what you hear. Don't believe answers,
- 0:33especially. So this is the, as I say, the
- 0:36second one, Visions of Otumu. I'll tell you what, I've been
- 0:40having terrible visions lately. Visions of Otumu.
- 0:45So if you want to join us and or give this a watch before you
- 0:47listen now, search on YouTube for Doctor Who Visions of Otumu
- 0:52UTOMU by Seattle International Films.
- 0:57I would like to say I think in terms of production, this is
- 1:00probably the weakest of the. Four, so the first one we'll
- 1:03talk about if you listen to our our first commentary, that was
- 1:05all done and. If not, why not?
- 1:07This is all done studio on video.
- 1:11Yeah. So we're a year later.
- 1:12We're like 1985 now and it's still just as fun.
- 1:17This is my favorite script though.
- 1:18It's the best script. No, no, the last one's the
- 1:21greatest script. It's the funniest script of the
- 1:23four because it leans into the Doctor and Carl's relationship
- 1:27the most and drags a load of comedy out of them, which is,
- 1:31and I will do a bit of singing. I'm so sorry, OK?
- 1:33Well, let's go into it, everybody.
- 1:35So if you've got that up on YouTube, visions of A2.
- 1:37A2 moves ready. And let's enjoy the second story
- 1:43of Barbara. Brother Dirty.
- 1:44Doctor My absolute favorite doctor in 321.
- 1:49Right. Here we are.
- 1:50So we've got the Seattle International Films logo.
- 1:53So I think we we saw a trailer for the first one.
- 1:56So they must have been premiered at at conventions.
- 1:58All that's a bit loud. Here we are right into Barbara's
- 2:01title sequence. More of a homemade title
- 2:04sequence here. There was a a homemade star
- 2:08field, and there she is, her face when she.
- 2:11Comes along like William Hartnell's face at the end of
- 2:14the Time Meddler. You know, and we have to say the
- 2:17quality on YouTube isn't great. This is someone playing on a on
- 2:20ATV that's filming it. So I really hope that these get
- 2:23remastered. Please, we want the Barber box
- 2:26set. But they're still watchable, so
- 2:28please, if you can get past the picture quality.
- 2:30Ryan K Johnson directed the first one.
- 2:31Now he's right in this one, Yeah.
- 2:33So this started off a bit different because we've got a
- 2:35clip of Singing in the Rain, obviously, not to lie.
- 2:40Yeah, but it's Karl, our favorite companion, chimney
- 2:44sweep in the TARDIS, watching telly.
- 2:47And obviously he's going to be fascinated by a Gene Kelly
- 2:50musical Singing in the Rain. And this is where the TARDIS
- 2:54interior, I mean it's blank walls with a pop plant, which is
- 2:57the 80s. Now they've put Barbara in her
- 3:00Romana sort of riding gear. Coach She.
- 3:02Got the shoulder pads? But it's a bit big, isn't it now
- 3:05sort of a bit bit puffy at the size it's.
- 3:07Supposed that's supposed to the 80s.
- 3:09Isn't it Palsy? Eating his snacks and watching
- 3:12Singing in the Right now Gene Kelly and singing in the Ride is
- 3:16very important to this. Script and the doctor's.
- 3:20She's got a longer hair in this one, bit like Jon Pert where her
- 3:22hair gets more and more both food as you go through.
- 3:25Both food bouffant. What's wrong with you?
- 3:32You can't say anything. Bumfu, she goes.
- 3:36Like any doctor, your hair. Carl, she goes.
- 3:39If you want to just sit there watching history, well, we could
- 3:41be experiencing it. Let's go.
- 3:44I'll make it up. She doesn't have anything like
- 3:45that really. We're still very 80s.
- 3:47We're starting off with the TARDIS scene.
- 3:49Yeah, very authentic of the time.
- 3:51She's got a lot of slap on her face, this.
- 3:53Time, isn't she? Yeah.
- 3:54She looks sort of like a 1980s hooker.
- 3:57No she doesn't. She is very Naimon Romana
- 4:00though. I just totally believe her
- 4:03though. Nobody like.
- 4:04Comedy like we still got some. Comedy businesses.
- 4:07Oh look, he's still playing with his hat.
- 4:09Well, so he takes his. He takes his snacks.
- 4:11His series snacks with him and then in a second the doctor
- 4:15comes back and brings the snacks back off him.
- 4:17I don't know why she won't let him have his snacks.
- 4:19And slaps on the table. Oh, they're so funny to.
- 4:23Go OK now here we have the setting for this weeks episode.
- 4:27Oh dear, this castle is rendered in this styrene.
- 4:31Now we do have to say the acting is amazing from the guest cast
- 4:34here. Is.
- 4:35But isn't. No, it isn't.
- 4:37No, but, well, no, because if we're given sort of fruity in
- 4:40the path, but yeah. But we're supposed to be on sort
- 4:42of medieval on another planet. Yeah, but it is another planet.
- 4:46Is it because. Yeah, because he's got it's
- 4:49medie. It's like we've got King's
- 4:51demons music going on, we've got everybody in there, medieval
- 4:55stuff, but it is supposed to be a different planet because the
- 4:57guy that they talk to has got like a special space thing on.
- 5:00Oh, can I just say the Princess here, the Princess of the castle
- 5:04looks very like Janet Fielding, but sort of Janet Fielding when
- 5:08she was being interviewed, even though the.
- 5:09Hairstyle of the 80s It's. Sort of businesswoman lesbian
- 5:13with a lot of slap on SO. It looks like the look of this
- 5:17is like an amateur dramatic stage play.
- 5:20Film compared to the first one. Compared to the first one, yeah.
- 5:23So we we're in a castle in the background.
- 5:25It's painted. It's blue painted bricks.
- 5:28You know, you, you sponge sponged on, painted.
- 5:32But it doesn't matter. But I have seen like Doctor Who
- 5:35stories, but it's not quite as cheap as that, but it's the same
- 5:38sort of thing where it's a painted drop like that.
- 5:40So we have the Prince and the Princess of the castle.
- 5:43Oh, and somebody is invading. I thought this was back in the
- 5:49park. It's supposed to be on another
- 5:50planet. Oh my God, look at that.
- 5:53That's bulging his breaches. And we're still using authentic
- 5:58Doctor Who in Central Music. So we've got just like the
- 6:02King's Demons. And now we've got some bit of
- 6:03Five Doctors music going in, you know, when the Cybermen attack.
- 6:09Sorry, Mustache. So the Prince has been captured.
- 6:13By what looks like Robin. Hood I thought it was going to
- 6:15be a Robin Hood story when I first watched.
- 6:17It Oh no, that that cut was terrible.
- 6:21He got hit and then he just landed on the floor straight
- 6:23away. But it's, it's super fun.
- 6:26Yeah. He's been taken away.
- 6:28Oh, what a codpace. Going on.
- 6:30My God. Oh the Princess Janet feel good,
- 6:32but not poor Janet, you know. Do you remember that picture of?
- 6:36Oh I love this with all the extras running so we the the the
- 6:40castle is in siege so we just. Oh my God, there's there's a an
- 6:44older, slightly larger woman in bright purple going Joshua
- 6:50reminds me of in French and Saunders when there were the
- 6:52extras going Oh my baby, my baby.
- 6:56Oh, and a bit more comedy as well.
- 6:58So the TARDIS has landed. Carl's like, excuse me, anybody,
- 7:00excuse me. And everyone's running past him
- 7:02like in a panic. Unfortunately, because I've only
- 7:04got 5 extras, it's the same people running back and forth
- 7:07but nevermind. Oh, I think the story here is
- 7:09the Doctor needs to collect some something for her TARDIS because
- 7:12it's broken. Or something like that.
- 7:15Yeah, yeah, I've just made that. But then also when she's they're
- 7:20about to be captured, but they're not because they talk to
- 7:22the leader who explains what's going on.
- 7:24She's had a history of being on this planet because he says, oh,
- 7:27are you the doctor that that helped us defeat the Cybermen
- 7:30back in da da da da da. And then he says, oh, funny, I
- 7:33thought it was AI, thought it was a man so.
- 7:36It's the only real reference though, isn't.
- 7:37It so we're all very medieval, apart from this main guy who
- 7:39played one of the folks in the last episode.
- 7:41But now he's in like a long. Way impressive to God, but.
- 7:45Now this guy is all in like purple with a sort of Flash
- 7:48Gordony style costume. I would say this.
- 7:51We're medieval slash. Flash, know what this is?
- 7:53You and I both love a panto. This is like I'm a massive
- 7:56panto. Because we even have a talent
- 8:00show in the middle of this episode.
- 8:03I think this is the comedy of the season.
- 8:05Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. And then she's eating an orange
- 8:07as well. This man here the the ruler of
- 8:11the castle. She looks a bit like Julian
- 8:13Glover. Shame he doesn't act like Julie
- 8:18Gamma. What fine protrus robes he has.
- 8:21I mean, all the language is very we are medieval, blah blah,
- 8:25blah. You know, Doctor.
- 8:27You're fealty to my honour is you will go to a tumu and free
- 8:33my daughter. So it's a rival, you know, rival
- 8:37Kingdom, I think, and he's been captured.
- 8:40The only way the Doctor can possibly get into the castle
- 8:44because it is to go to this talent show because Atumu wants
- 8:49entertainers. So basically what is they can't
- 8:52send any guards or anything with the doctor and Carl because they
- 8:55need to defend their own Kingdom.
- 8:56So she must go. She's she said she will go.
- 8:59But it's the only way. In but the only way in is to be
- 9:02sort of sort of peasant. Jokers.
- 9:05Yeah, to be like a travelling trip.
- 9:06The Princess wants to go, but he won't let her go.
- 9:09So she goes and she goes. Obviously our 1980s Janet
- 9:12Fielding Princess. So now but she goes.
- 9:17To Carl. Come along Carl, we're going to
- 9:19be entertainers. And then she goes straight at
- 9:23the times. Of course she's got the gear,
- 9:24isn't she? In the TARDIS.
- 9:25And yeah, off they go and they dress up and.
- 9:28She has, unfortunately. I'll need to set up the joke
- 9:31before we get there. She has to ensure that they have
- 9:35talent, otherwise they're never going to get into the castle.
- 9:37The evil. Man, the story is here.
- 9:39The evil guys holding all these talent contest, he needs to be
- 9:41entertained. So you can only go through,
- 9:44yeah, you only get through into his Kingdom if you're
- 9:46entertaining. It's a really good idea.
- 9:49Karl has no talent, so the doctor uses a hypno.
- 9:53Watch. Which is obviously we've done
- 9:55that before and we, Henry Gordon Jacobs, look at my hypno watch
- 9:59and says right when you hear a certain 2 words you will believe
- 10:03you're the best singer and dancer ever and well, we'll get
- 10:07there. Yeah.
- 10:09What are the two? Words mark.
- 10:10So the two words are Gene Kelly. So she says Gene Kelly and we
- 10:15will see shortly. Suddenly Carl leaps up and does
- 10:18the whole singing in the Rain dance routine, which she's
- 10:20remembered from what should be. It's a really clever.
- 10:22I imagine I was funny. We had this in the 1980s with.
- 10:26Nick O'Brien Perry was a dancer. No don't.
- 10:28Nick O'Brien was the 6th. Doctor and Mel.
- 10:31Oh, but. Imagine instead of having, I
- 10:35don't know, instead of having mind warp or something, we had
- 10:39this medieval and Mel has to dress up and be the singer of
- 10:44the dodge with the talent show. He's the doctor, frankly.
- 10:47This is sort of where we do get through in Season 24 though, is
- 10:50it is this sort of tone. It's a big pants mine over the
- 10:53top four. This is a lot of humour if.
- 10:55If season 24 had a historical style story.
- 10:58It would be like it. Would be this yeah, which I
- 11:02think would be very popular, but it's just how it's just how it
- 11:07all ties in. It's just really cleverly
- 11:08written. I.
- 11:08Think I like the fact that they go to the castle in a horse and
- 11:11carriage and they just put them inside a black box and sort of
- 11:15shake it about. When I was watching it the first
- 11:19time around, I had no doubt that they were going there in a horse
- 11:21and carriage. Oh, you believe it.
- 11:24Oh no, there's a slightly bad model castle shot.
- 11:27Which doesn't model? Are you mad as a cardboard Kyle
- 11:29that I keep zooming in on box with with battleman?
- 11:32Somebody here has made the castle walls.
- 11:35They have, oh used lots of cardboard.
- 11:38They have stuck all these bricks on.
- 11:40You know what it looks like? It looks like the dungeon in The
- 11:43Curse of Fatal Death. That's what it looks.
- 11:45Like yeah, curse of. Fatal Death.
- 11:46And in fact, we get scenes like they're all running around like
- 11:49a big farce up and down these corridors and it's very curse of
- 11:52fatal death. And so the Prince has now been
- 11:54captured. And is this heard?
- 11:55What's his name? Or this is a 2 move A2 who is a
- 11:58bit like the great intelligence in the bomb of.
- 12:01Very great intelligence, you know.
- 12:02Sitting there with his legs crossed, he's bold, a bit ugly,
- 12:07and saying sitting in the piece of doom.
- 12:09Yeah, Oh. Great Otumu, please tell me your
- 12:12secrets. But there's no interest in terms
- 12:15of the performances. Yeah, I mean, so, OK, the acting
- 12:19can be slightly weak. Of course.
- 12:21They're all going for it. They all believe it.
- 12:23No one's sending it out. No one's doing any Richard
- 12:27Brides in Paradise Towers. There you go.
- 12:30They should have given this a watch.
- 12:31Like everyone, I'd say everybody is more serious to their role
- 12:34than any any anybody in Season 24.
- 12:39Oh no, A-Team was not bald. It was just very harsh lighting.
- 12:42Now we've got a close up of him, I can see he's got a fine head
- 12:44of hair. You know, they're really taking
- 12:48it, you know, taking. The script and look what they've
- 12:51done here is very clever because I think it's probably the same
- 12:53set as before, but they've just turned the lights down so you
- 12:57can just see just sort of the outline of the bricks.
- 12:59I think this is quite atmospheric actually, with a
- 13:03harsh spotlight on A2. Moon, I mean, this could be the
- 13:06master, the new master. This guy, he's very evil.
- 13:09He's very. We don't need the Master in
- 13:11Barbara Benedetti series. They're all original stories.
- 13:15He doesn't turn up, does he? No he doesn't.
- 13:17No, but I thought it could be the master when I first watched
- 13:19this. I thought it was the toy Baker
- 13:21in the last one. Yeah, he could have been.
- 13:24Oh, that's right, he's doing tarot cars.
- 13:25Of course he is. Well, because.
- 13:27He could he he knows that somebody's going to be a threat
- 13:30to him in the future. Is why is he trying to go?
- 13:32Do those pokers? Does he want to knock him over?
- 13:34The head with a poker but this guy like the he's got sort of
- 13:38hypnotic powers so he stops the Prince from hitting him and
- 13:42we've got more 5 doctors incidental music going on here
- 13:45while this. Is well done.
- 13:46No, no, no. This is well done because it was
- 13:48just done with close-ups to their faces like Battle of
- 13:50Wheels and then the poker coming down.
- 13:52That was well as hit. I thought, yeah, I think 80s
- 13:57Doctor Who should have paid attention to Seattle
- 13:59international fan films. It's just tight.
- 14:02It's tightly, tightly. Tighter.
- 14:04Can't speak today. Tighter, tighter.
- 14:06Paste. Come on.
- 14:12Back to the doctor. And she's, she's very true.
- 14:15I don't know if this is that directory or not, but he's got
- 14:18an orange. What do you mean?
- 14:20He's got an orange on his. Table.
- 14:21He's got an orange. Oh, a little orange.
- 14:24Little Orange. She's wearing a cockpie.
- 14:25He's. Got an orange, she had an orange
- 14:28and was eating an orange. So is there some sort of theme
- 14:31here of orange and she has an orange in the next story as
- 14:33well? Shoot, that's her thing, I
- 14:35think. Oh well.
- 14:35So keep an eye on the last. One munch in an orange.
- 14:37It wasn't. Oh, did an orange go up the
- 14:39stairs? There was, yeah.
- 14:41That's The thing is there's an orange in this and in that.
- 14:43Was there an orange in the first one?
- 14:46I don't think so, but here, here's the horse and cart, Carl
- 14:49and the doctor on her way, and she's in like a like silky.
- 14:53Kimono. What is?
- 14:55She wearing. It's great, she.
- 14:57Looks like she's off to have it. Off but now I see it now you
- 15:00said it. They're just in a thing,
- 15:01pretending, you know, rocking around, pretending they're in a
- 15:04it's. Clever though.
- 15:05It's clever, I. Wouldn't have even thought.
- 15:07Otherwise you need you could have done an establishing shot
- 15:09but they obviously haven't got a horse and car so.
- 15:11Here, she's going to hypnotize Carl.
- 15:13Poor Carl, I love her earrings. I think he does the Jago joke.
- 15:17OK, No, I I can't be that easily hypnotized.
- 15:21He's got you. Know what he looks like handsome
- 15:24and I can't tell if he looks young.
- 15:25Sometimes looks young, sometimes looks old.
- 15:27He looks like Danny Ramsey from Neighbours.
- 15:29You know the first episode of Neighbours?
- 15:32Oh, a little. Bit that's who Carl reminds me
- 15:34of. I keep seeing Danny Ramsey.
- 15:36He's so charming though, he's so and he just absolutely loves the
- 15:41Doctor, that that renders the entirety of Doctor Who moot.
- 15:50If you're saying this cheapo fan film, it's your favorite.
- 15:53Doctor, if that too got cancelled tomorrow it would be a
- 15:55shame. I've missed it but I'd have
- 15:58these stories to watch Binley game.
- 16:01Oh, here we go. Okay, the talent show isn't the
- 16:05best in terms of setting design. I don't know why they've gone
- 16:07for a pink background did. You notice in the.
- 16:09Front sort of 18. There's a woman wearing those
- 16:11old grandma scarves that you wear when it's cold out.
- 16:14Well, there's supposed to be sort of a medieval crowd on
- 16:16there. Dressed up like a fortune.
- 16:17Teller supposed to be that's didn't you?
- 16:20It's the same extra as you get in.
- 16:22The ragtag bunch they are. It's.
- 16:23Just weird that there's a modern sort of set with medieval
- 16:27people. It's an alien planet, all right.
- 16:30And here we have our our evil Kingdom guy and he's got his
- 16:33ring and he puts his hand down if it's if they don't pass the
- 16:37talent show do. They tell I.
- 16:39No, I think they just get taken away and they don't.
- 16:40Get so Oh, I you know what? The fella playing the the the
- 16:44the Jago character, the impresario.
- 16:47He's very camp, isn't he? Look, he's got a load of slap on
- 16:50and a beard. He's like Contra to worst.
- 16:56But. Fortunately, Concetta has got
- 16:59two fabulous talents covered on down the Doctor and Carl.
- 17:03Here's the doctor trying to say we're going on next.
- 17:06Oh my God, I'm going to do it. I'm going to do.
- 17:07It wherever she goes, she just convinces.
- 17:09You say the two words and then I'll say what's next.
- 17:12All right, she goes. No, trust me, I've got some
- 17:15talent here. Don't.
- 17:16She's telling the guy to introduce Gene Kelly and then
- 17:20that tricks Carl into suddenly going into his dance routine.
- 17:25What am I going to do? I've got no talent.
- 17:28She's so confident. Look, she's got a lovely silk
- 17:31scarf in her pocket. You ready?
- 17:34Here we go. See.
- 17:39He's holding an orange. Maybe here, we say, maybe I
- 17:41could juggle. Here we go.
- 17:44Gene Kelly goes. Got a dance?
- 17:48Got a dance? I mean, maybe the sequence is a
- 17:51little bit over long. No, it's wonderful.
- 17:53He's not actually tap dancing, it's just been.
- 17:55Popcorn. He's up on the stage and he's
- 17:59tap dancing. What we've heard recently,
- 18:02foreshadowing in a way, you know, all the sort of musical
- 18:06things we've had in the recent shooting Gap were series.
- 18:09What's? That.
- 18:11What's up your life? No, I'm talking about a Petrol
- 18:14River Rd. with a goblin song and everything.
- 18:17To have a. To stop in a story and have a
- 18:19bit of a musical number. Big thing.
- 18:22I'm just saying. Seattle films.
- 18:23We're doing it first. You know it's in though Ruby.
- 18:27Sunday. Exactly.
- 18:29This is. This is that moment.
- 18:30This is the OH. Look, Goblin Song.
- 18:32And in a minute he starts tap dancing.
- 18:34He jumps up on the chair and he spins the whole chair over and
- 18:37keeps tap dancing. I mean, I never knew Carl was.
- 18:39Such a dad. Game go go on Carl.
- 18:44Although to be fair, he's doing some pretty bad dogs.
- 18:46He's. Wowing this medieval crowd with
- 18:50his Oh yeah. Did you see the previous act
- 18:53there was terrible. Go on, Carl, give it some.
- 18:59Oh, he really fell off the chair then.
- 19:01It's just really entertaining. Oh, and it's starting to wear
- 19:05off. So she's the doctor shouting
- 19:06from the wings. Gene Kelly sparing him on.
- 19:14He's going. I'm spinning in the rain.
- 19:18Yeah. You haven't had anything like
- 19:20this where the companions that's doing a dance number to?
- 19:23No. But we should save.
- 19:25Everyone's life, we. Should have done.
- 19:27I'd love to be in the audience or the fellas.
- 19:29Maybe did the script again. You're a genius.
- 19:32Imagine being in the audience at a convention watching this.
- 19:36Oh, did they have? Gallifrey one by then was it
- 19:38Gallifrey 1985? That audience is enraptured.
- 19:42Now look at them. Oh, finally, they showed fan
- 19:45films at conventions. The lady in the old woman's
- 19:47scarf was practically frothing. Did you see it?
- 19:51She's having a wonderful time. My God, that is some serious tap
- 19:55he's doing now. OK, you're right.
- 19:57It's going on a bit. It's only because he's so great.
- 20:01What's the fellow's name again? What's a challenge?
- 20:04You are car. I mean, yeah, he's a I'm a
- 20:07songwriter now for Animaniacs. He he jumped on the chair,
- 20:13pushed the chair down onto the stave, and then slid down the
- 20:16stage. He goes, What the hell did I do?
- 20:21She went. Don't worry about it, Carl.
- 20:25Oh dear. So this is our our Carl.
- 20:28This is an article from Forbes from 2023 songwriter Randy Rogel
- 20:33on writing Yakos World for Animaniacs. 30 years ago this
- 20:39September, the animated series Animaniacs was unleashed on the
- 20:42world. There's one segment from the
- 20:44show that people remember most vividly.
- 20:46It's Yakos World. I mean, I know Animaniacs but I
- 20:48don't remember specific songs. Fan are you?
- 20:52You're a huge fan of Doctor Who. You've only just discovered
- 20:54Barbara Benedetti. So, yes, so Randy Rogel, R Carl
- 20:57in this attended West Point and graduated with a degree in
- 21:01engineering. He spent six years as a military
- 21:03officer in the combat arms and a master's degree in international
- 21:07relations from Boston University and then went and then went into
- 21:11corporate life. He was promoted several times at
- 21:14Procter and Gamble and then recruited to digital systems.
- 21:18But he always had a dream of working in film and television.
- 21:21So I quit my job, drove down to Los Angeles, slept on a friend's
- 21:24couch and began writing spect scripts, submitting them to
- 21:28agents and studios. And then he got work on Batman,
- 21:31the Animated Series, Tiny Toon Adventures, Animaniacs.
- 21:34So I wonder where in his life he was doing that.
- 21:36Maybe he's, you know, writing to.
- 21:38I think maybe he was just a massive Doctor Who fan and said,
- 21:40yeah, I'd love to be a part of this.
- 21:42Do you know what else he can do? He looks fabulous in a top hat
- 21:45and he can sing, dance and do that and it.
- 21:48Says here he was a grown up, exposed to the music of
- 21:50Broadway, Gershwin, Berlin, Rodgers, Hart, Hammerstein, all
- 21:54that. So I think maybe maybe this was
- 21:56written in because he had that love of that and he knew all of
- 21:59that. What can you do?
- 22:00And he goes, right, fine, we'll have Oh no, look, there's that
- 22:03cardboard cut out of the castle again.
- 22:07You cause waiting for them come. Will you pay attention to the
- 22:09story? He's mentions his Doctor Who
- 22:11companion time, but he doesn't. Orange is in short again.
- 22:15Look, you caught not you call what's his name?
- 22:17A tumu. Oh no, what a shame.
- 22:22A tumus God is far less sexy than in the first story.
- 22:26Sorry a tumu you cause better. I just I'm just trying to
- 22:31understand this orange. Does he have special sort of
- 22:33magical powers then a two move? What do you, what do you
- 22:36hypnotize the guy to stop him Here with the Pope, he's like
- 22:38the master. He's got a hypnotism of of
- 22:40Abbaism. I can't abbaism.
- 22:44I don't know what I'm talking. About you've got hypnotism of
- 22:47Abbaism, my life's anything to go by.
- 22:51Oh, and here was the mysterious It's the Princess that's
- 22:56sneaked. She went on and did a dance in a
- 22:58massive black wig. A bit like Diana Dawn, no?
- 23:00I mean, Diana. Dawn Ross.
- 23:02Diana Ross. Ohh and here we go.
- 23:06So she's got in and the doctors snuck in to her dressing room.
- 23:11So do you know what this reminds me?
- 23:12Of going. On, you know, that scene in
- 23:15demon sort of Punjab where the doctor goes into the barn and
- 23:18she says to the fella, you don't want to really do this, you
- 23:21should stop This is this is Barbara Benedetti's version of
- 23:24that. So the Princess, do you know
- 23:27what she looks like? That's what she looks like.
- 23:29This Janet Fielding woman. Have you seen assignment for of
- 23:33Mr. Blankface Sapphire Steel? No, I haven't.
- 23:36Well, there's a really dreadful sort of lesbo looking woman in
- 23:40that with that sort of fevered hair.
- 23:42That's what she looks like. OK, I wish they'd stop showing
- 23:45that cardboard cut out. That's the.
- 23:46Only thing I think if there's a re edit of this one day get the
- 23:49that model shot. Out do a CGI one.
- 23:51Do you know what though? I do love the fact that every
- 23:53time they zoom in on that cardboard cut out, they do that
- 23:57all of wrestle. So maybe now we have the Doctor,
- 24:01the Princess and Carl it looks. Like a very dodgy porn right?
- 24:07They're all in slap. And she's sending, of course
- 24:10she's sending off Carl to do a distraction.
- 24:12Trust him well. He's very competent.
- 24:15He's got to get the guard to chase after around while the
- 24:17doctor, the Princess rescue the Prince.
- 24:21That Princess looks like such a porn star.
- 24:24She's got a wig on. Oh my God, if you're a fan of
- 24:28porn stars, watch. Very like Jane Asher here.
- 24:34Meant Who said I was meant to die?
- 24:39Oh, this is it. This is the bit that's like a
- 24:41fatal death. He goes running off down the
- 24:44corridors. The guard follows him and we
- 24:45watch them go back and forth, back and forth.
- 24:47And it's that music when the Dalek was destroyed in the fire.
- 24:56Doctor, come on, now is your moment.
- 24:58Come on, Doctor. Take the prostitute with you.
- 25:02Oh Carl, man, this is his best story, isn't it?
- 25:05But. I think it's all of them.
- 25:06It's just a lot of fun to watch and it's never boring.
- 25:09There's always something new happening.
- 25:11There's always something funny happening and dramatic.
- 25:14Name Doctor Who stories worse than this.
- 25:16I can't think, I thought. I mean, there's plenty.
- 25:19Worse than this? There are so many this.
- 25:21Would you rather watch this be or Paradise Towers?
- 25:24In the 80s, I mean. I'd rather watch this in
- 25:26Paradise Towers. Absolutely.
- 25:29Oh, that was great. They've been kept the whole all
- 25:31the lights were out and they were in silhouette and then the
- 25:33lights came on. They were captured.
- 25:36And so here. We, I think they use good visual
- 25:38shorthand like that, you know, just to get to the point really
- 25:41quickly. That's The thing is it's you can
- 25:43tell there's a whole team behind this.
- 25:45It's not just a couple of people with a video camera.
- 25:47This is like you've got a lighting person, you've got a
- 25:50set person, you've got, you know, it's a full team of
- 25:53people. Of the four villains, though,
- 25:55I'll probably say Otumu is the weakest.
- 25:58Oh, in terms of the villain, yeah.
- 26:00It's it's not it doesn't camp it up.
- 26:02Enough. It's very cleverly storyboarded
- 26:05as well, so. Just look so the Doctor and the
- 26:09Princess now in their very elaborate gear, All that hits on
- 26:13show are being held by guards. I have seen a porn movie like
- 26:17this I think. But you've.
- 26:21Got this on the show reels. I don't know, it was a long time
- 26:25ago, but here he. Said.
- 26:28Oh, evil God, he said. The God, you can have your way
- 26:31with her and he went. Oh, here.
- 26:34So he's like, oh, the Time Lord. He knows of the Doctor.
- 26:37And he thinks because he's predicted someone's going to
- 26:39come and stop him, observe him. Usurp him, Jesus.
- 26:44Christ, I'm. Going to buy you a fucking.
- 26:47And he's like Christmas. Obviously the Doctor is going to
- 26:49be her, but it's very clever that it turns out it's actually
- 26:53the Princess is the one that basically shoots him and kills
- 26:57him, and it's not the Doctor. The Doctor has nothing to do
- 26:59with it. I was quite shocked in the bit
- 27:01coming up where they captured. The orange again, I said.
- 27:04This orange turns up all the time.
- 27:07I was very surprised because they rescued the Prince in a
- 27:09minute and then they all get captured again.
- 27:13And then he's going to behead the Princess and the doctor.
- 27:18They're all captured and he's like, and he's going to force
- 27:22Karl to do it with his hypnotism.
- 27:24He's like, you know, and the sword goes up and it goes down.
- 27:28And I genuinely thought, A, is this going to be a cliffhanger,
- 27:31or B, how is she going to get out of this?
- 27:34How is that actually going? To actually knows well.
- 27:37And you know, all of those 80s cliffhangers, you know, like the
- 27:40visitation and it's 1/4 doomsday with the doctor.
- 27:44And the thing this is, I mean, Eric Saywood could never because
- 27:48here it's actually cleverly done.
- 27:50They're about to behead the doctor.
- 27:52And then and then he says, do you have any final words?
- 27:55And she says, yes. Gene Kelly snaps Carl into his
- 28:00dance routine, flies the sword out, overcomes the garden.
- 28:07That's how you do it. That's how you get out of a
- 28:09beheading sequence. In.
- 28:12Such a clever way, I think it's perfect rotation.
- 28:15Someone goes no way. Yeah, exactly.
- 28:18Rather than you cop out every single time it's.
- 28:20Been set out. And it's been set up before.
- 28:23Well, the Gene Kelly thing was set up in the first scene when
- 28:26he's watching it. Then it's set up again in this.
- 28:28And that's what I mean, just why I was just so impressed by the
- 28:32way that it's actually. Eric Saber written should have
- 28:34been looking at these and getting the script exactly from
- 28:37these people. It's not.
- 28:38Just there for the sake of it. But it's also that trope that
- 28:41you get in a Doctor Who story. Oh, the the bad guy's about to
- 28:44kill him to get somebody to do it.
- 28:46This is so Doctor Who, isn't it? It's so so.
- 28:49So Doctor Who, but funny so. You don't usually, well, comedy.
- 28:54But it's, but it's, I don't know what it is.
- 28:56I just was transfixed by this whole story.
- 29:00Transfixed, you say? Transfixed.
- 29:03It's just so well done, I don't think.
- 29:05Here we go. It's a big sword.
- 29:10G Kelly. And the Gene Kelly thing, it's
- 29:15such a, it's such a Doctor Who thing.
- 29:17It is dance routine knocked the bloody guard.
- 29:19Out where else other than Doctor Who would you get a medieval
- 29:22space planet when someone's been hypnotized by the words Gene
- 29:25Kelly and doing the dance routine?
- 29:27This is absolute, in fact. You know what that is?
- 29:30It's very Douglas Adams. This isn't it.
- 29:32Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh my God, the Princess is
- 29:37beating the shit out of the car just like Janet Philbin did to
- 29:39that poor Tereleptil. Could you see this in season 17
- 29:44as a Tom Baker story? Kind of, actually, yeah.
- 29:48They didn't have, you know, they didn't have anything like this.
- 29:50I think the production value wouldn't be much different.
- 29:53Production value forms and I'm on.
- 29:54There's no visual difference here.
- 29:56He has. Got a space gun?
- 29:59No, the Princess has been knocked out.
- 30:01Not for long. And then we get another twist
- 30:04here where it's not the Doctor. That's the doctor doesn't really
- 30:08do very much in in this one. Yeah.
- 30:10She's funny. But she's just there on the
- 30:12side. It sort of all happens around
- 30:14her. Yeah, well, they take a
- 30:16completely different tack in the third one, don't they?
- 30:19Having her totally on the sidelines, Yeah, but really on
- 30:22the. Princess and the Princess just
- 30:24stabs actually, and then we've got the close up because he's
- 30:29just realized now he's been stabbed by the Princess.
- 30:31His tarot card was actually predicting that rather than look
- 30:35out to doing anything. She's rolling up her sleeves.
- 30:38A good day's work, she says. I've, I've anguished.
- 30:41Absolutely. It's the Princess capturing, not
- 30:44capturing, rescuing the Prince. The Prince is completely
- 30:46useless. What a great script.
- 30:50I don't get the only bit I don't get the Princess picks up the
- 30:52massive sword when they're escaping and then she just the
- 30:56doctor tells her just to drop it and then she drops it and then
- 30:59they run away. She doesn't.
- 31:01She doesn't agree with weapons. True.
- 31:04In the same way she confiscated smacks, she doesn't like swords
- 31:08or snacks. Oh my God, now they're running
- 31:10around the corridor. We've got a bit of a chase.
- 31:12Sequence. Here door was very cardboard.
- 31:14Wasn't it? It's all cardboard.
- 31:19Oh, we've got a Leela reference there.
- 31:21Good heavens, she's just. What's it?
- 31:23Good heavens. You sound just like Leela.
- 31:27What? The hell is going on?
- 31:28Just stab them to death. Do you know I?
- 31:30Think I must have fallen the surgery I.
- 31:31Think you did? So this is Prince having a
- 31:33vision because he's got special powers that he knows that
- 31:37there's a secret door there that they can get out of.
- 31:39So he knows to press his brick to get out of there.
- 31:41Oh. My God.
- 31:43Escape back to their own Kingdom.
- 31:45I can't believe how much incident there is in half an
- 31:47hour in this story. Oh, I.
- 31:48Wish there was like. Action, Suspense, sorcery and
- 31:53also a dance routine. What's?
- 31:54Going on The Doctor, Carl Prince, The Princess on the
- 31:56front of Doctor Magazine, 1985 new series.
- 32:00Exclusive interview Barbara. Benedetti is the doctor.
- 32:05Well, of course I had to accept the role.
- 32:08When they said to me, will I be the first female Doctor?
- 32:11I said, who is this? Jodie Whitaker.
- 32:13Person page three Find out about Carl.
- 32:19Is he just any old chimney sweep?
- 32:23What's going on that I don't remember any of this?
- 32:24Well, now they're just escaping and we're going to just wrap up
- 32:27the story now back in the Kingdom.
- 32:29Julian Glover's back in his fabulous purple and golden Rd.
- 32:33Very much, Doctor. However, can we thank you for
- 32:36saving our Kingdom? Blah.
- 32:37Blah. Oh, I didn't get the equipment.
- 32:38She gets the equipment. I don't think so.
- 32:40Maybe it's another one way she. No, she is at the beginning of
- 32:43this. Are you almost taking it for
- 32:44that, John Pert? We won.
- 32:45Again, not Yeah, she's like. I have it on very good authority
- 32:54that everything is going to work out well, Doctor.
- 32:57However, could we thank you. Yeah, off they go.
- 32:59It's a bit like Terra de Vervo, isn't it?
- 33:02Have you ever heard my rendering of on with the?
- 33:03Motley God of death. Yeah, there we go.
- 33:09And then we've got, you know, our usual.
- 33:11I feel like the TARDIS is an upgrade.
- 33:13Stunned. No, it's the same TARDIS.
- 33:14Oh, it's the same one. Yeah, good heavens, he says.
- 33:17Yeah, it's. Like I thought A2 moon was the
- 33:19only one that could do sorcery? Here we go in there.
- 33:22Oh, Barbara. Barbara Benedetti.
- 33:24Can I ask you what your one fabulous thing is for the What's
- 33:28it called again? The magics of A2.
- 33:30Move two move. Wesley Risers A2 Move Princess
- 33:36Adrian Stasia Johnson. She looks like a Stasia as well.
- 33:40Sorry. Go on.
- 33:40What's your fabulous thing? That just the way that just the
- 33:45cleverness of that script, like I said, that bit that I
- 33:48described about the ending where it's not your typical, I'll kill
- 33:50them, get out of it. Just the way that it's set up
- 33:53and done effortlessly. I just think that's really
- 33:57clever and well done. My favorite thing about this
- 33:59second one certainly wasn't the production value it was it was
- 34:03the Doctor and Carl's relationship and just how witty
- 34:07and funny those things were lesser making him get up on that
- 34:11stage and tap dance. And we're just watching.
- 34:13It's a full car. All the set builders, the people
- 34:16doing the costumes, everything is a great.
- 34:18Team Howard Carson, the designer.
- 34:20You better job next time please. Why are you?
- 34:23Planning on the ball. Ryan K Johnson directed this.
- 34:25One Ryan K Johnson, and he's does them all, I think.
- 34:27Well, he wrote and directed. He is the showrunner for Barbara
- 34:30Benedetti is Ryan K Johnson. This is his vision.
- 34:34It is. My favorite?
- 34:36Vision well done the well can I ask you?
- 34:38Really give it a try guys. Can I?
- 34:40Ask you what the title is of the third episode that we'll be
- 34:43watching soon. What?
- 34:44Is. The 3rd it's called a doctor in
- 34:46the House. Oh yes, I mean this is much like
- 34:49this is up to 1988 the next one. And that's a much more sort of
- 34:53contemporary thriller, medical supernatural thriller.
- 34:58It's the next ones very much more like a very early BV in
- 35:02terms of the style, but yeah. But add fun.
- 35:04It's got the best jogger you've ever seen in anything ever.
- 35:08Do you know what I mean? That Lady is like that.
- 35:10Yeah, but he just. Required some discussion,
- 35:13Doctor. This doctor had a bit of a photo
- 35:14shoot. We've got to get some photos of
- 35:16her. What?
- 35:16Put him up on the wall. Oh.
- 35:18I just think she's great. And get some merchandise with
- 35:20this doctor on please. Oh, you can get that fellow who
- 35:23custom makes dolls. Somethings.
- 35:26Oh, not those sort of dolls. I think Doctor Who dolls, Do you
- 35:30want a Barbara Benedetti? Doll for Christmas?
- 35:32Yes, please. OK, well, we'll make it happen.
- 35:35That was. Do you know what?
- 35:37You're right. That is probably the best
- 35:39script. It's very funny.
- 35:41Yeah, well. Well, give it a try everybody,
- 35:43if we haven't. And and next we'll head into
- 35:46horror territory.
