- 0:12Hello friends, it is shown here. It is Tuesday.
- 0:16It is the 19th of March. Good day.
- 0:20So good to have your company as today is the day that it all
- 0:24turns around. Today is the day that we read
- 0:28Mark, Chapter 8, and in this chapter you will hear Peter, one
- 0:32of Jesus closest disciples, say, by gosh, by golly, Jesus, I
- 0:37actually think you may be the Messiah, you may be the Son of
- 0:42God. And when that happened you were
- 0:45going to see a massive shift because then Mark has made his
- 0:48argument. And then from there, rather than
- 0:51leaping tall buildings in a single bound where we cover
- 0:54weeks and months in a single chapter, we're going to slow
- 0:58right down and Mark is going to share a lot more of Jesus
- 1:02conversations about his death, about the Kingdom of God and
- 1:07about his mission. So we're going to see the shift
- 1:10happen today and then that will take us from here right through
- 1:14to Easter as Mark shares that story of Jesus, mission, Jesus
- 1:21purpose here, playing out in all of its tragic, but in the end
- 1:27glorious fullness. How exciting.
- 1:31Do you want to read it? I bet you do.
- 1:32Well, I certainly do. So let's do it together.
- 1:34You ready? Let us read together Mark
- 1:38Chapter 8. About this time another large
- 1:51crowd had gathered and the people ran out of food.
- 1:53Again, Jesus called his disciples and told them I feel
- 1:58sorry for these people. They've been here with me for
- 2:01three days and they have nothing left to eat.
- 2:04If I send them home hungry, they will faint along the way, for
- 2:09some of them have come a long distance, his disciples replied.
- 2:13How are we supposed to find enough food to feed them out
- 2:16here in the wilderness? Jesus asked How much bread do
- 2:20you have? 7 loaves, they replied.
- 2:24So Jesus told all the people to sit down on the ground.
- 2:28Then he took the seven lives, thanked God for them, and broke
- 2:32them into pieces. He gave them to his disciples,
- 2:35who distributed the bread to the crowd.
- 2:38A few small fish were found too, so Jesus also blessed these and
- 2:43told his disciples to distribute them.
- 2:45They ate as much as they wanted. Afterward, the disciples picked
- 2:50up seven large baskets of leftover food.
- 2:54There were about 4000 men in the crowd that day, and Jesus sent
- 2:59them home after they had eaten. Immediately after this, he got
- 3:03into a boat with his disciples and crossed over to the region
- 3:07of Dalmanutha. When the Pharisees heard that
- 3:11Jesus had arrived, they came and started to argue with him,
- 3:15testing him. They demanded that he showed
- 3:17them a miraculous sign from heaven to prove his authority.
- 3:22When he heard this, he sighed deeply in his spirit and said
- 3:27why do these people keep demanding him miraculous sign.
- 3:30I tell you the truth, I will not give this generation any such
- 3:35sign. He got back into the boat and
- 3:38left them, and he crossed to the other side of the lake.
- 3:42But the disciples had forgotten to bring any food.
- 3:45They had only one loaf of bread with them in the boat.
- 3:48As they were crossing the lake, Jesus warned them.
- 3:51Watch out. Beware of the yeast of the
- 3:54Pharisees and of Herod. At this they began to argue with
- 3:58each other because they hadn't brought any bread.
- 4:01Jesus knew what they were saying, So he said.
- 4:03Why are you arguing about having no bread?
- 4:07Don't you know or understand even yet?
- 4:11Are your hearts too hard to take it in?
- 4:14You have eyes. Can't you see?
- 4:16You have ears? Can't you hear?
- 4:20Don't you remember anything at all when I fed the 5000 with
- 4:24five loaves of bread? How many baskets of leftovers
- 4:28did you pick up afterward? 12, they said.
- 4:32And when I fed the 4000 with seven lives, how many large
- 4:36baskets of leftovers did you pick up?
- 4:38Seven, they said. Don't you understand yet?
- 4:43He asked them. When they arrived at Bethsaida,
- 4:48some people brought a blind man to Jesus and they begged him to
- 4:52touch the man and heal him. Jesus took the blind man by the
- 4:56hand and led him out of the village.
- 4:58Then, spitting on the man's eyes, he laid his hands on him
- 5:03and asked, Can you see anything now?
- 5:07The man looked around. Yes, he said.
- 5:11I I see people, but I can't see them very clearly.
- 5:15They look like trees walking around.
- 5:18Then Jesus placed his hands on the man's eyes again, and his
- 5:22eyes were opened. His sight was completely
- 5:25restored and he could see everything clearly.
- 5:29Jesus sent him away saying, don't go back into the village
- 5:33on your way home. Jesus and his disciples left
- 5:37Galilee and went up to the villages near Sesario Philippi.
- 5:41As they were walking along, he asked them, who do people say I
- 5:46am? Well, they're replied.
- 5:48Some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say you
- 5:53are one of the other prophets. Then he asked them.
- 5:57But who do you say I am? Peter replied, You are the
- 6:03Messiah, but Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.
- 6:10Then Jesus began to tell them that the Son of Man must suffer
- 6:14many terrible things and be rejected by the elders, the
- 6:18leading priests and the teachers of religious law.
- 6:21He would be killed, but three days later he would rise from
- 6:25the dead. As he talked about this openly
- 6:28with his disciples, Peter took him aside and began to reprimand
- 6:32him for saying such things. Jesus turned around and looked
- 6:36at his disciples, then reprimanded Peter.
- 6:39Get away from me, Satan, he said.
- 6:42You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not
- 6:46from God's. Then calling the crowd to join
- 6:50his disciples, he said. If any of you wants to be my
- 6:54follower, you must give up your own way.
- 6:57Take up your cross and follow me.
- 7:01If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it.
- 7:04But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the
- 7:08good news, you will save it. And what do you benefit if you
- 7:13gain the whole world but lose your own soul?
- 7:17Is anything worth more than your soul?
- 7:20If anyone is ashamed of me and my Father, and these adulterous
- 7:25and sinful days, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person
- 7:29when he returns, and the glory of his Father with the holy
- 7:33angels. Jesus, you are the Messiah.
- 7:47You are God himself, and we need your courage to keep on saying
- 7:54that so that we can be bold in every opportunity where we are
- 8:00challenged as to why we have this hope in our hearts that we
- 8:05can speak boldly of your grace in our lives.
- 8:10Lord, transform us so that we can be walking, talking
- 8:15billboards of your love and grace and compassion, and so
- 8:22that truly we can bring your Kingdom into this world around
- 8:27us. You really are amazing.
- 8:33Our minds just struggle to comprehend that you, the God of
- 8:39the universe, is present as a man, so that we would know what
- 8:44you're like and you are good. We just lift you up and place
- 8:52you in the highest throne, and we worship you.
- 8:57And we do all of this in your name, Jesus.
- 9:00Amen.
