Transcript
- 0:07What's up? And welcome to another exciting
- 0:10edition of Rockford Initiative. My name's Phil, and I'm your
- 0:13host. Tonight I get to talk to one of
- 0:16my favorite people in the world, Lucas from Carly Cosgrove, an
- 0:21amazing, amazing musician. Also just a really chill guy.
- 0:25We're going to talk about Warhammer 40K, but we talk about
- 0:30mostly Warhammer 40K if we're being honest.
- 0:33There's a lot we cover. Lucas's like intro to model
- 0:39painting. We go like super in depth into
- 0:43the war. It's very cool.
- 0:45If that's not your thing, I would tell you you should listen
- 0:49to it anyways. But also like you can skip
- 0:52through. We also talk about like the
- 0:53Eagles. We get into some like really
- 0:56cool like background stories about Carly Cosgrove and like
- 1:01how they perform live. Check out Carly Cosgrove if you
- 1:04haven't already. I don't know what rock you've
- 1:06been hiding under, but Carly Cosgrove is amazing.
- 1:09Also, make sure that you get out to see them if you are anywhere
- 1:14in the path of their tour. They're touring with Free Throw
- 1:16and Microwave in the next couple of months.
- 1:20They're also playing a headliner in November in West Virginia.
- 1:24And then they just announced the tour next year, early next year
- 1:28in Europe with Spanish love songs, which is pretty cool.
- 1:32And Michael, Sarah Palin's on that tour freaking like, jeez,
- 1:36you're up. What a cool line up.
- 1:38Anyways, yeah, check out the interview.
- 1:41As always, Rock Furniture is brought to you by Never A Phase
- 1:44Network, which is your home for emo, punk, ska, and hardcore
- 1:48music. We talk music news, album
- 1:51reviews, artist features. We have a whole slate of
- 1:54podcasts. Besides this show, there is the
- 1:57Never a Phase Podcast, the Wasting Time Podcast, Certified
- 2:01Fangirl Podcast, the Ska Mailman Podcast, The Imperfect Dad's
- 2:06Podcast, and Track Marks, which is our newest podcast.
- 2:11So if you like what we're doing here, maybe go check out some of
- 2:15those other podcasts. Maybe just take a little listen,
- 2:17spend a little time, get a little, get to know us just a
- 2:19little bit. Anyways, I also, as always, want
- 2:23to make sure that I plug my good friends in Jammer Ice Sack who
- 2:27have lent us the beautiful music that played at the start of this
- 2:30episode. Make sure you go check out
- 2:31Jammer Ice Sack. Give them a listen.
- 2:34This is the Carly Cosgrove. And yeah, here's Lucas.
- 2:52All right. I am here with Lucas from Carly
- 2:54Cosgrove. Lucas, how are you doing today?
- 2:57I'm doing great today. Phil, how are you doing?
- 2:59I am. I'm very good.
- 3:02I'm very excited to talk to you. Lucas reached out to me and
- 3:06wanted to talk about Warhammer 40K, and I can think of nothing
- 3:09more exciting than to hear you talk about how you got into
- 3:14this. You're like you.
- 3:18You mentioned lore, which I know Warhammer is like steeped in as
- 3:25we kind of like get into the subject.
- 3:28For people who are listening who may not be super familiar with
- 3:31Warhammer might like myself included, tell us a little bit
- 3:34about what it is and maybe like your entry point into into the
- 3:42fandom. Sure thing.
- 3:47I'm going to approach this as if I'm trying to explain it to
- 3:50somebody who has never heard about it.
- 3:53And I think that that requires that requires an acknowledgement
- 3:57of some like a comprehensive history of the company that made
- 4:02it and kind of what it is. It is it ostensibly in the late
- 4:0770s, early 80s, you see Dungeons and Dragons gain a lot of
- 4:14popularity. There is a company in the United
- 4:17Kingdom called Games Workshop who makes really detailed,
- 4:23probably just pewter metal figurines to use for Dungeons
- 4:27and Dragons play. And they say, how can we make
- 4:32more money? And they figure, well, if we get
- 4:36people to buy multiple miniatures to play a game
- 4:38instead of just the one they're using for the dungeon, then we
- 4:41can make like buku bucks. So they release their tabletop
- 4:49war game, which is Warhammer Fantasy, all the, you know,
- 4:53Tolkien tropes. They add a couple of things here
- 4:55and there and they're the premise of Warhammer's.
- 5:00Just their general ethos tends to be the more tragic side of
- 5:05fantasy. So everything is a little bit
- 5:07depressing. And to make this setting go on
- 5:11lore wise, every single faction has to be locked in a perpetual
- 5:15stalemate. But I think probably sometime
- 5:19around the 80s after Star Wars, they went, what if it was in
- 5:23space? And then that's how that yields
- 5:29Warhammer 40,000, which goes through a bunch of different,
- 5:34you know, kind of refreshers until you land on what came
- 5:38about in 3rd edition. For reference, we're on 11th
- 5:41edition now as of recent where they said we're going to make
- 5:46this the most self serious to the point of parody atmosphere
- 5:52internally to the lore. I will get into that more later.
- 5:56But yeah, the the other premise of it being locked into an
- 6:01internal stalemate and this is something kind of important
- 6:04world wise, is there are no good guys in the entire setting.
- 6:09That is part of it. And I'm, I'm, I'm just sharing
- 6:14my experience. I am sort of an outside observer
- 6:18to the inner community. There are a lot of toxic sects
- 6:23of the fandom of this community. I think you could say that about
- 6:27almost any like nerdy fandom or really any fandom period.
- 6:32But but yeah, I think there's also plenty of of of good eggs
- 6:36out there. For sure.
- 6:38I mean, I, I didn't OK. I will also briefly touch on my
- 6:45relation to the game just so you know where I'm coming from.
- 6:48I'm not claiming to be an expert at 40 Ki just want to share my
- 6:54like my, my journey with it and how I came to love it.
- 6:58It started, I was probably 8 or 9 years old and I saw my cousins
- 7:03and their older friend painting miniatures and they were like
- 7:06the size of my thumb. I had a couple that I'll
- 7:08probably show later the next to me the size of my thumb.
- 7:11And I was like, what is this? And then I got a very, very
- 7:15cursory look into some lore and I thought it was so cool.
- 7:19And then, you know, I begged for, you know, plastic kits for
- 7:24oh, I should also explain Warhammer and 40K is made-up of
- 7:29a bunch of different plastic kits that you assemble yourself
- 7:33and paint yourself and used to play tabletop war games.
- 7:39These kits are very expensive. I think it's bullshit.
- 7:43Somebody at a game store, somebody at a game store once
- 7:46told me, no, you don't understand.
- 7:49Games Workshop uses very like intricate and precise plastic
- 7:54molding so that all these details on these really small
- 7:57miniatures that are the size of your thumb can be as detailed as
- 8:02they are. So I can give them that
- 8:05Mulligan. But also, I don't know, like
- 8:09there are some figurines that are going like, again, one
- 8:12figurine in like a blister pack the size of my thumb is like 50
- 8:15bucks just because it's good And isn't it stupid?
- 8:19It's it's a weird barrier to entry.
- 8:23It's a very difficult barrier to entry and the like for as much
- 8:27as I and I'll get into what I love about it, but first I need
- 8:29to kind of talk about what I hate about it.
- 8:32The company that makes it is very much interested in creating
- 8:37a harder and harder barrier to entry.
- 8:39They often make older units unusable in tournament play.
- 8:45They have tournaments where in order to field your models, you
- 8:48have to paint them a certain way.
- 8:50It has to be, you know, the sanctioned plastic.
- 8:53You can't use proxies of other models.
- 8:56Like it's very like, my one regret is that it is kind of a
- 8:59money pit. That being said, and I'll get to
- 9:01this, I've not been spending money on it when I can help it.
- 9:08I got these minis first when I was 10 or 12 years old and I
- 9:14painted them very poorly and I built them very poorly because I
- 9:18was an impulsive 10 or 12 year old.
- 9:19And then I forgot about them for years.
- 9:22And then in 2021 I found all of my miniatures in my parents
- 9:29basement. And I thought how fun would it
- 9:33be to just like rehab these, try to put them back together with
- 9:38the care that I couldn't when I was a little kid.
- 9:43So I go to the dollar store. I grab paint stripper, I put all
- 9:50these plastic miniatures in a VAT for a month and I scrub off
- 9:54all this old hobby paint with a toothbrush and then I start from
- 9:57scratch and you know, five years later I've painted 10
- 10:04miniatures. But but I in this last week and
- 10:13honestly, I think the prospect of coming on and talking about
- 10:16this got me really excited about it.
- 10:18I've since like put into sub assembly and primed got ready
- 10:22for painting an additional 14. So I'm very excited to like, you
- 10:26know, continue on this. Sorry, that was the tangent I
- 10:28had to go on for my I I have I my favorite aspect of 40 Ki
- 10:35think in order at the top is the hobby.
- 10:39I like doing something that is called kid bashing, which is
- 10:44when you take an existing kit, like an existing model, and you
- 10:49mix and match parts to make something that is wholly unique
- 10:53to you. It kind of allows something that
- 10:58is supposed to be set in stone as like its own plastic kit to
- 11:03kind of function a little more like Lego than not.
- 11:06And it makes it feel like a more personalized thing to you.
- 11:10But also I prefer it to working with like just making something
- 11:15from scratch because a lot of the details you want are already
- 11:18there. They're already in the kits.
- 11:19So it's just you get to paint in a lot of broader strokes when
- 11:24you are, you know, cutting plastic arms off of sprues and
- 11:28put it in different places than you want.
- 11:32And I think that creativity and the care that goes into making a
- 11:38miniature figurine that's the size of your thumb that is still
- 11:41based in reality is a very nice mindfulness activity.
- 11:48I also had no, like, background for the lore of the setting when
- 11:53I was a little kid. And it wasn't until 2022 that I
- 11:56started listening to some podcasts, you know, finding some
- 12:01more comedy and more entertainment leaning
- 12:03descriptions of lore online than not and kind of understanding
- 12:09the the nuances of the setting a little bit.
- 12:14I find it interesting and, and I, I am someone who is into
- 12:19Dungeons and Dragons, like Rockford Initiative.
- 12:21That's, that's kind of the whole shtick.
- 12:23And, and the idea that was originally behind the podcast
- 12:27was I'm going to talk to people about Dungeons and Dragons.
- 12:29So far, I think it's just one person that I've talked to about
- 12:32Dungeons and Dragons out of like 15 interviews so far.
- 12:36But a big part of that for me, a few years ago, I got a 3D
- 12:42printer and I'd start creating these miniatures and, and I'm a
- 12:49terrible artist, but like just the, the premise, like the, the
- 12:53thought of like painting them and like getting to create these
- 12:58like characters like that resume that resonates with me really
- 13:02well. I'm very bad at actually
- 13:04painting them. And you can see the one like
- 13:06there's a figure back here. I've got several on my desk that
- 13:08are all printed in white because I'm like, I'm going to paint
- 13:10this someday and then it never happens.
- 13:12But but definitely to understand the the the idea behind like kit
- 13:20bashing appeals to me greatly. There is nothing you can do to
- 13:28that miniature that I haven't done worse to mine, if that
- 13:38gives you any incentive to start.
- 13:41Yeah, yeah, I, I have, I have started, I bought paint.
- 13:43I went and bought like hobby paint at my local game store
- 13:49support small businesses and I, I have some that I painted.
- 13:54I don't know where they are. I just haven't gotten around to
- 13:59all of the ones that I want to paint.
- 14:02I understand that the the minis that are next to me, some of
- 14:05them have just been staring at me for years because I've been
- 14:07scared to start. That too.
- 14:11That too. Because what it becomes precious
- 14:13to you to actually like finish it, you just like, but it's not
- 14:18perfect. A lot of a lot of the reason why
- 14:22most of my miniature sat unpainted for four years is
- 14:26because in kit bashing, I took so much away from certain limbs
- 14:32that I had to add. And to add means that you
- 14:36supplement, you know, muscles, different parts of the body, you
- 14:40know, gaps in the in the between the plastic with modeling putty.
- 14:43And I didn't want to fuck that up because that required actual
- 14:46sculpting. And what it took was getting
- 14:53over your inhibitions and just doing it honestly.
- 14:57And I'm glad I did because it's not perfect, but it doesn't have
- 15:00to be because it's a miniature. This, this is my tagline for
- 15:03this episode. The size of your thumb that you
- 15:07know you're going to see from afar anyway.
- 15:09And you know, it's and, and you have to learn somehow.
- 15:13You can't be too precious about things like that, I think.
- 15:15That's fair. I, I definitely, it's very
- 15:18daunting for me. Like like I'll buy a journal and
- 15:23I'll be and I'll start writing in it and I will, I will get to
- 15:28a point where I'm like, oh, I don't like how that turned out.
- 15:32So now I need to go buy a new journal.
- 15:35What are you? What, are you worried that
- 15:36somebody's gonna read it like you're gonna?
- 15:38It's a great question. It's a great, it's like this
- 15:40weird mental block, but I I think you're right, right.
- 15:43You just have to. You just have to get started,
- 15:45and the only way to begin is by beginning, as they say on Game
- 15:48Changer. I also am a drop out fan.
- 15:50I'm glad you brought that up. But it's funny you mentioned
- 15:58that because I just started reading a book called The
- 15:59Artist's Way and one of the things that it has to do as a
- 16:05prompt is there. One of the non negotiables is
- 16:08you do a morning journal. You write 3 pages every day and
- 16:13there's no rule other than you need to fill 3 pages.
- 16:17You can write I don't know what to write over and over again.
- 16:19All work and no play makes Jack a Dole Boy style for three pages
- 16:24just to get it out of your system.
- 16:26Yeah. And that is something I intend
- 16:29to begin tomorrow. Like, I'm glad you said.
- 16:31I'm serious. I'm glad you said that because I
- 16:33like literally just started the journey of trying to journal and
- 16:36do that. Yeah, it's hard.
- 16:39It's I don't know what the mental block is.
- 16:41And I definitely feel like I've gotten better as I've gotten
- 16:44older. Like young me was very much a
- 16:47perfectionist, Older me has seen some stuff and so I'm like a lot
- 16:53more forgiving of myself when it comes to messing stuff up.
- 16:58But anyways, that's a, that's a fun tangent.
- 17:03So you gave me, which I I think is really fun to share.
- 17:06You gave me like an outline of what you wanted to talk on the
- 17:08episode, which is so cool. One of the things that you
- 17:12mentioned was the value of third spaces, and I'd love to hear
- 17:16your thoughts there. As so again, the last thing, the
- 17:22other piece of this is actually playing the damn game, which I
- 17:24get to do. I want to be very upfront about
- 17:27that. I intended to try to play my
- 17:28first game yesterday again, and playing the first game of
- 17:35anything in the Warhammer sphere, whether it be Fantasy
- 17:3840K, is a little bit daunting because there is that initial
- 17:43financial barrier to entry. However, if you go and you just
- 17:46want to play the game and you're friendly, you will meet somebody
- 17:49at a local game store who will lend you minis.
- 17:52You can play this game with fucking quarters if you want to.
- 17:56Like you don't really technically need, you know, to
- 18:00buy the fun plastic stuff. I like it for immersion, you
- 18:03know, I like it for, for, for the storytelling.
- 18:06And I think when I do finally get to play a more substantial
- 18:10game, I will be doing it for that, for the storytelling as
- 18:15opposed to the competitive nature of winning or losing.
- 18:17Because as we'll get to later, I play an army that is going to
- 18:20lose a lot. I think, I think the, if you
- 18:28love the story and you love, you're in it for the
- 18:35storytelling part of, of of things.
- 18:38And this could apply to a lot of different games or art styles or
- 18:43whatever. But losing is, a lot of the time
- 18:47like more exciting and more fun from a storytelling perspective
- 18:52than winning ever could be. The smaller the margin between
- 18:56winning, losing is, the more fun.
- 18:58Losing is fair, yeah, but also maybe a little bit more
- 19:01infuriating. There's probably, there's
- 19:05probably some, there's probably some chart that like charts that
- 19:08like, I feel like also like same for like a large margin.
- 19:12Like what's the difference between like tragedy and comedy
- 19:15depending on how bad you lose something?
- 19:17I think that's great. I'd love to see that that that
- 19:21chart fleshed out. Maybe that's something I don't.
- 19:25Think that, I don't think you can measure that because
- 19:27everybody's threshold for that is very different, right?
- 19:30But I do think the relative, I think you're right, the relative
- 19:34pain point of of losing, it definitely rises the closer you
- 19:40get to winning. OK, but to go back to 3rd
- 19:45spaces, I've lived in the city of Philadelphia since 2017, more
- 19:54or less been, you know, hearing back and I've watched,
- 19:59especially post COVID, it become a lot harder to find third
- 20:06spaces. The city of Philadelphia, as
- 20:08awesome as it is, as a walkable as it is, it gets difficult to
- 20:12find places where you can meet new people without spending a
- 20:16whole lot of money, or find people with common interests or
- 20:21just like, go somewhere where you're not going to be asked to
- 20:23spend a lot of money or get kicked out.
- 20:28Enter local game stores. This is a place where people who
- 20:32don't know each other go and become friends because of their
- 20:36shared love of this one thing. And I finally got to meet some
- 20:40people at my local game store yesterday and they were all so
- 20:43nice. And it is a community that I
- 20:46would not have had. I mean that I, I mean, I'm, I'm
- 20:50grateful to get the opportunity to have, you know, in the
- 20:55future. Yeah.
- 20:57And it's, and it's really special cause like, again,
- 21:00everyone's there for the same thing.
- 21:02It's kind of a, a reprieve from, you know, anything else happened
- 21:07in your life. And it's a place that's not work
- 21:08and it's not home and getting out and doing stuff becomes very
- 21:12difficult, especially when, you know, I, I am of the ill queer.
- 21:18I have to give myself like, I always kind of wanted permission
- 21:22from some more authoritative entity than myself to leave my
- 21:26own home. And that was a tough thing to
- 21:30do. And, you know, to have a third
- 21:32space like that. I mean, the the group that plays
- 21:37one of the one of the 40K games, they meet every Wednesday in the
- 21:41afternoon. So to have like a social
- 21:44obligate, an obligation that you can, you know, miss if you need
- 21:48to, but that like will help you get out is really it's really
- 21:53encouraging and really and really awesome.
- 21:55I moved to. North Carolina three years ago
- 21:58from from Florida and didn't know anybody.
- 22:03Literally just wanted to get out of Florida, picked a place on a
- 22:06map that was close that like my wife and kids felt like we, we
- 22:10could build a life in. And so we ended up in the
- 22:12Raleigh area and I didn't didn't know anybody.
- 22:18It was right at that time that Lor Khanna was coming out.
- 22:20I don't know if you're familiar with Lor Khanna at all.
- 22:22It's like a collectible card game, Disney themed.
- 22:27I'm somewhat familiar. I deck building games is not
- 22:32something that I know a whole lot about, but if it functioned
- 22:36like I've seen people play Magic the Gathering and Passing, yeah,
- 22:40if it's anything like that, it is it's.
- 22:43It's very similar, a little bit easier, a little less involved,
- 22:48a little less. I mean, there's some strategies
- 22:50to anyways, we don't have to get into that.
- 22:52But the the point I was trying to make is I started buying
- 22:58these Lorcona cards. Because I thought it would.
- 23:03Be fun and the I started going every Monday night to Lorcona
- 23:09League where I would go and we would play it with just a bunch
- 23:14of random people and you got points based on whether you
- 23:17showed up. And unlike like other games,
- 23:22Lorcano is very much about the community.
- 23:24So it was like show up, wear your Disney T-shirt.
- 23:28You get a point. If you can do a cool thing where
- 23:30you have like people from the same movie on the board at the
- 23:34same time or whatever, you get points for that.
- 23:36But ultimately, like I, I would just go and, and there were like
- 23:4140 other adults that shared the interest of collecting and
- 23:46playing this game. And it was, I don't, it's, it,
- 23:51it's very hard as an adult to make new friends, but I, I do, I
- 23:56love the, the, the way that you present that about local game
- 24:01stores because I think you're right.
- 24:02Like that is probably one of the easiest ways to meet new people
- 24:07without having to spend a lot of money or.
- 24:10Drink. Or drink.
- 24:12Yeah, it's very, it's OK. It's, it's a very nice feeling
- 24:15to have that especially because like, you know, I, I think that
- 24:22the nature of how the world operates and conducts itself now
- 24:25is very much like a, you don't meander, you go from point A to
- 24:29B for whatever you need. Like you don't leave unless you
- 24:32have to. You don't go somewhere unless
- 24:34you have to. That's why I, for, again, for
- 24:39many other reasons. That's why I hate Waymos.
- 24:43That's why I, I particularly dislike delivery robots.
- 24:48I used to bike for Uber. So I, I have a, you know, I have
- 24:54a lot of respect for the people who, who are in the Courier
- 24:56industry and in the Uber driver industry.
- 24:58That's a tough job to do, right? But like, Oh my God, we're also
- 25:04like, I think like ghost kitchens working in a ghost
- 25:07kitchen. That would suck.
- 25:09Where it's just making sure I understand.
- 25:12It's just like you can order there from DoorDash, but there's
- 25:17nothing else a. Ghost Kitchen is like, is like,
- 25:19you don't, you don't get to see the person who is going to eat
- 25:23the food you make them. Right.
- 25:25Yeah, that sounds miserable. Yeah.
- 25:29But yeah, I struggle to think of a lot of other, you know, public
- 25:32spaces that encourage, you know, also the other thing too is
- 25:35like, you go to a show, you go to a concert.
- 25:37I, I, I still will go to house show sometimes.
- 25:41I still go to concerts at like small clubs in Philly.
- 25:44I'm trying to be better about that now that I have been just
- 25:46because, again, I need to give myself permission to go out
- 25:48more. But I am also somebody who has a
- 25:54hard time focusing or feeling like I, I'm not too anxious to
- 26:00talk when there's that much going on around you, that much
- 26:03loud music. So to have a third space like a
- 26:06gaming store that's relatively quiet and you can hold a
- 26:08conversation with somebody and not feel the anxiety of a bunch
- 26:12of other people having a conversation around you, right?
- 26:15A very nice feature. Yeah, I where the point is
- 26:20talking not necessarily like watching the the bands perform
- 26:25or enjoying music or or anything else really.
- 26:29Exactly. And I'm, you know, I've been to
- 26:32a couple house shows that feel more like networking events than
- 26:35they do like a social get together.
- 26:37And that's that's not, that's not something I'm particularly
- 26:41fond of. I, I used when I was a younger
- 26:44person, I used to joke that we should have a day for that and
- 26:47call it like the Catalina wine mixer or something where it's
- 26:50just like you do an open house and that's where you go to meet
- 26:54other people who are doing music in your scene and let the shows
- 26:56just be shows and not like times to politic to get your bands to
- 27:01play at that house or whatever. Yeah, yeah.
- 27:05That's the, I mean, even even the the, the podcast business of
- 27:11it all, which business is a a strong word.
- 27:17This my least favorite part is the like, oh, I've got to
- 27:21promote and post things on social media.
- 27:24Like obviously I'm creating content that I want people to
- 27:27consume because I think that it's good content and I think
- 27:31that it's entertaining. And I think that it's also like
- 27:35like I I learned something new personally every time I talk to
- 27:38somebody so far on on this this show, but I hate the here's my
- 27:44numbers. Please come on, I'm begging you.
- 27:49It I'd I'd much rather like I'd much rather just do it and and
- 27:56and be able to have the conversations without all the
- 27:58extra. Fluff for the love of the game.
- 28:01For the love of the game, That's right.
- 28:03I'm not making any money and I don't really care if I ever do
- 28:06at this point like that. Like, you know, I'm just, I'm
- 28:09here because I really enjoy talking to people and I'm and
- 28:13it's anyways, I don't need to get, I don't need to dive into
- 28:15that. I mean, this is, it's free.
- 28:20It's free form. We can do whatever we want.
- 28:23That's right. I I feel like I talk about this
- 28:25all the time. I just, I love talking to
- 28:27creative people. Musicians are like, I love going
- 28:31to shows. I've I've been to a disgusting
- 28:34amount of I like I've grown up and I have big kid money now, so
- 28:37I like can actually afford to go see all the bands that I love.
- 28:41And so I go shows all the time and getting to talk to people
- 28:44who make music that like brings out all this emotion about
- 28:50things that they are emotional about in a very like passionate,
- 28:54happy, excited way is so cool. ANYWAYS, let's.
- 28:58Get back to not not about that. Let's talk about plastic men
- 29:02fighting in space, yes? So I you talked to you, we
- 29:09talked about third spaces, we talked about how you got into
- 29:1240K and we've hit almost all of your stuff.
- 29:14But like so, you haven't. Played yet haven't played yet
- 29:18Most of what I've been doing has been hobbying on my own time and
- 29:22I have I have a couple I have some some minis that I will
- 29:25share that I will show I'll start with a larger one.
- 29:29So the the faction that I intend to play is orcs.
- 29:34We'll get into more stuff there, but this is one of the like my
- 29:38largest complete and painted model.
- 29:41This is a like a commander unit. It's called the Orc knob Orcs.
- 29:45I'll get into the lore stuff later, but like as a like kind
- 29:48of a, a brief cursory thing. They have a very collective
- 29:56psychic might, but they are portrayed in the lore as being
- 29:59like all having cockney accents and being like pretty like oh
- 30:06fish, but they're also terrifying in every faction.
- 30:10This game is very violent because it's a war game.
- 30:13But this is the knob, which I think is short for nobility and
- 30:15they like command smaller units of troops, which the standard
- 30:19infantry troop in orcs are called boys, but just boys, just
- 30:25boys with AZ. This is this is an orc boy, and
- 30:29their weapons are named funny things like they have.
- 30:32Axes and guns. Yeah.
- 30:34Oh well, 'cause that's the other thing about this game, we'll get
- 30:36into it. Lore stuff is there's shooting
- 30:40phases and melee phases, and a lot of a lot of the time that
- 30:45you spend actually getting units off of the board is in close
- 30:48combat, melee phases of the game.
- 30:50This is another boy with A2 handed rifle.
- 30:53This weapon is called a shooter. Any any bladed weapon that an
- 31:02orc uses is called a choppa. The the pistols are called
- 31:07sluggers. There it's a larger a larger
- 31:12shooter, a longer shooter is called a big shooter.
- 31:14As you can tell like it's like like it.
- 31:17It doesn't take itself too seriously, at least with orcs,
- 31:19which is particularly why I like their stuff.
- 31:22And if you look hard enough, you can find comedy and parody in
- 31:27any part of the lore of a faction, right?
- 31:30The kind of smaller, lighter infantry units.
- 31:32This little guy, this is called a grot in their in squads, they
- 31:36are Gretchen. They're kind of like the goblin
- 31:38equivalent in the in the lore, they're fun in the game, they're
- 31:44very cheap points wise as like a general overview of the game,
- 31:50you get a set amount of points worth of models that you can
- 31:54field to keep the army balance at any one time.
- 31:57A squad of Gretchen is the cheapest unit I think in the
- 32:01entire game. And the idea is that you put
- 32:03them like far back on your side of the board and they just hold
- 32:07an objective and you farm points.
- 32:10As I understand it, when you play the actual game, it's not
- 32:14like one win condition. You get victory points for
- 32:17completing specific tasks like holding an objective or taking
- 32:21out a considerable percentage of your opponent's models on the
- 32:24field. And a lot of that is with dice
- 32:26rolls. And why I say my army is bad is
- 32:28because orcs big rule because they are like I want to say the
- 32:34least. They're represented as being the
- 32:35least conventionally intelligent alien species in the game.
- 32:40Is when use the standard 6 and a die to roll for anything they
- 32:44hit on fives which means that a standard boy.
- 32:50So it's if you roll A5 or A6, then you can hit your target.
- 33:00For example, like a standard unit hits on fours, which means
- 33:03you have a 50% chance of hitting your target.
- 33:08A very elite army hits on threes.
- 33:10There's one army that hits on twos and rerolls ones.
- 33:13They're very good, works on fives.
- 33:15But if you get a six, you get to make another role.
- 33:17That's their kind of fun thing. And that rule, I believe used to
- 33:21be called daka Daka Daka Daka is DACA is an like the orc term for
- 33:31like it's literally the automata PO, the sound that the gun makes
- 33:34when you're firing it, because that's and, and a lot of what
- 33:37they enjoy their their other whole thing is they enjoy
- 33:41fighting. That's their whole thing.
- 33:42They're fighting in the Galaxy for the love of the game and no
- 33:46other reason. They just like.
- 33:48Fighting out to conquer. They're not being attacked.
- 33:51They just fighting each other. When they fight they get
- 33:54stronger or they die and they are funky.
- 33:56Yes. So if when they when they die or
- 34:00if you like decapitate them like spores go into the air and then
- 34:03they grow more orcs. There that is, that's
- 34:07interesting. That's an that's a very
- 34:09interesting like non conventional lower point that I
- 34:15think is is pretty cool. I also want to show you some
- 34:18unfinished models. Here is an unfinished unprimed
- 34:22Orcboy that I'm that I've also been working on.
- 34:24This is kid bashed. So this arm is actually came
- 34:29from a a space marine kit that I had lying around this torso and
- 34:36like this this arm and this arm and this head and probably the
- 34:41legs are all from different kits.
- 34:44These legs were not on the sprue as being a peg leg, but the leg
- 34:48fell off and it seemed like a good opportunity to give at
- 34:51least one fork in my army a peg leg.
- 34:55Like that's why that's why kid bashing is my favorite thing is
- 34:57because you get to just give the models you have a lot more
- 35:01personality and make it feel less like it's this very
- 35:04homogeneous thing. And orcs in particular, because
- 35:06they're so, you know, ramshackling, disorganized and
- 35:09non uniform in the lore of the setting allows me to do that.
- 35:16Yeah, I will also show you Here's another model that I that
- 35:20I posed in kind of a who want me.
- 35:23Are you not entertained? Get some sort of thing.
- 35:25This this model is primed. So I oh shit, I via like I took
- 35:35like a spray can of like matte black spray paint did that to
- 35:38get all the undersides so that, you know, you had shadowing and
- 35:42you know, all the recesses would just like kind of feel more like
- 35:46line work. And then I went over it and just
- 35:47to the top and front with like grey and then I will paint over
- 35:51this to eventually get it to look like the other models I
- 35:53showed. I know Adm friend of mine, a
- 35:59Dungeon Master friend of mine who used to print out all of our
- 36:04D&D figures. He would use.
- 36:06Stuff like like textured like grass on the on the base of the
- 36:11token and and that sort of stuff.
- 36:12Is that common practice as well, or is it?
- 36:15Not only is it common practice, but as of late Games Workshop
- 36:19and This is why I hate them. If you want to play like a Games
- 36:23Workshop sanctioned competitive tournament, there are rules that
- 36:27you're basing must have texture on.
- 36:30Wow, they want you to buy their stuff, they want you to buy
- 36:36their textures naturally, but it doesn't have to be.
- 36:41But they want you to really bad. Then again, for for tournaments,
- 36:44which I don't think I will ever play 'cause I haven't even
- 36:46played a casual game. If I'm playing tournaments, then
- 36:50something is there's all these fucking rules that don't let you
- 36:57do fun things like proxy. Yeah, like one of the models
- 37:00that I am the most proud of having kit bashed.
- 37:03This is also part of the allure thing.
- 37:06There's a orcs used to have a a unit called a Luda.
- 37:11And in older editions of the game, that whole thing was like,
- 37:14you can take a weapon from another army and you can give it
- 37:18to your orc and have that weapon profile.
- 37:20OK, To even feel the model you had to kit bash.
- 37:25So like they, I think, I think Games Workshop encouraged
- 37:27creativity a lot more early on. And now they're kind of just
- 37:30want it more streamlined because I think they care more about the
- 37:34the tournament and competitive play that they sanction.
- 37:37And they do, you know, the storytelling and then hobbying,
- 37:41which is I think the more pure part of 40K.
- 37:46But this is this is the my kit bash Luda.
- 37:50I took these two larger long cannons from a another like
- 37:56plastic bike model and then this large gas tank that I need to
- 38:02explain as to what it's doing being attached to these two
- 38:05large guns and these straps. And I'm, I'm very proud with how
- 38:09this came out, mostly because a model like this, to my
- 38:14knowledge, doesn't exist anywhere else except in it's.
- 38:17Yeah, yeah, it's really cool. It I feel like you can expand
- 38:22the story for that in particular.
- 38:24And I and and also, if you had not told me that that was Kid
- 38:28Bash, I would have never known that's.
- 38:31Also part of that's also part of the challenge, which I like you
- 38:34can do a lot of people will kid bash just to just to be able to
- 38:39have more units representing a certain thing on on the on the
- 38:44game board. I like to, I like to make it
- 38:48look like it's super intentional.
- 38:50It's supposed to be there. Yeah, I I do a great job of it.
- 38:54I, I, you could, you could have told me that those were just
- 38:57things that came out of blister packs then, which totally
- 38:59believed you. Should we explain blister packs
- 39:04and sprues? Yeah, sure.
- 39:07OK. I have no idea what a sprue is.
- 39:09I'm I'm It's similar to what a blister pack is, so OK.
- 39:13A sprue is when you don't get your model assembled, which I
- 39:17think we've explained earlier. A sprue is a large square piece
- 39:22of plastic that has all of the parts of your model sort of
- 39:29attached to that frame so that they stay, you know, undamaged
- 39:36for the most part. And you will go in with like tin
- 39:38snips and you will cut them out of the of the spring mold.
- 39:42And that's how they can mass produce these kits.
- 39:44And that's why I like, you know, a lot of kits are designed to
- 39:49have it. So you are.
- 39:53How do I explain this? You know, you're locked to a
- 39:56certain number of models per kit.
- 39:58But a lot of times, especially with old and older models, when
- 40:00Games Workshop wanted you to be more creative, they will add
- 40:03extra weapons like a pack of the standard boys.
- 40:07You know this particular kit which they made from like the
- 40:11late 90s through to just very recently when they when the orcs
- 40:16kind of got a big range refresh. It was, you know, you get 8 or 9
- 40:22boys per per thing and it would come with options to kick them
- 40:26out with like the the melee weapon and the pistol or you
- 40:29could do the two handed shooter and sometimes they would let you
- 40:34kick them out with even more stuff like the like they had to
- 40:36have a big a big shooter in the box.
- 40:38They'd have a rocket launcher. They'd have like other fun stuff
- 40:40in there too. I'm talking about orcs a lot.
- 40:44They are not the faction that gets the most lore stuff, but
- 40:50they've been getting a lot more recently I think just because
- 40:53they kind of serve as the most blatant Comic Relief in the
- 40:57setting. OK, but again, the characters
- 41:03themselves within the setting are very self serious and that's
- 41:06kind of funny. That's the that's the yeah,
- 41:10trying to think if there's anything else hobbying.
- 41:12Do you have any other like hobbying questions before we
- 41:13like really fucking dive into war?
- 41:16I'm excited for the war. OK, there's so.
- 41:19Much. I so I have played maybe 1
- 41:23Warhammer 4000 video game, didn't understand the lore at
- 41:28all. It was, it was very fun that I
- 41:30was killing a lot of rat people, maybe.
- 41:32I don't know. OK, that was that was probably
- 41:34Warhammer Fantasy then. Oh, was it?
- 41:36Would you remember the? Maybe?
- 41:37Yeah. Probably.
- 41:38I don't, I don't know, I don't remember what it was.
- 41:40Vile something. I'll look it up later.
- 41:43Vermontide. Vermontide.
- 41:45There you go. Yeah, that's fantasy.
- 41:47So that's a different lore, different world from.
- 41:51OK, yes, how? OK, there's kind of two ways you
- 41:56can start with lore. You I can go through each
- 42:00faction or I, there's a lot of factions or I, I like, I can
- 42:04start from the very, very beginning.
- 42:07Or I can start from where humans come into play.
- 42:11Cause the because the the faction the people who play the
- 42:16human based armies there is a stigma and it's probably a meme
- 42:21at this point that they're very self important and don't care
- 42:24about any of the other factions. So a lot of the lore honestly
- 42:28starts there. But stuff happened before that
- 42:30so I guess I'll start with the humans.
- 42:33So the game the the namesake of the game is Warhammer 40,040
- 42:37thousand, meaning that it happens 40,000 years ano domini
- 42:42in in our current era. The idea is that life pretty
- 42:48much sucks for everyone. Humans have taken to the entire
- 42:52Galaxy and are trying to rule it and rid it of anything that is
- 42:57not human or is not loyal to humanity.
- 43:04This has yielded human society to be incredibly authoritarian
- 43:10and fascist and very unfair and very oppressive.
- 43:12Conditions for the average person are horrible.
- 43:15Conditions for soldiers are horrible.
- 43:17There's a joke that the standard shock troop, and that's like in
- 43:22the like the most populous human allied unit don't make it more
- 43:28than 15 hours as a Guardsman because they get killed that
- 43:34quickly. Life in the 41st Millennium
- 43:39absolutely sucks for everybody who's in it, but I think it's
- 43:45important to know how we got there because there's a whole
- 43:47lot of other stuff that happens to get you there.
- 43:51So essentially between what is our present day and like 20,000
- 43:58years after our present day, all of the planet, our planet
- 44:05becomes in a war with itself. And then one like kind of one
- 44:13magical person kind of reveals himself after being hidden for
- 44:20years and unites all of Earth under 1 banner.
- 44:23And that person is the emperor of mankind.
- 44:25He's kind of the most important dude in the in the human
- 44:28setting, even though he's not a playable character and he
- 44:32doesn't do anything. And we will get there.
- 44:34So. He and this is this is like
- 44:3820,000 years before. This is 40,000 years before 40
- 44:42KK. So this is like the midpoint.
- 44:44I think it's about that time. And then once he unites all of
- 44:48Earth, he decides he wants to take to the stars and humanity
- 44:56begins conquering like the entire Galaxy.
- 45:01And they run into a problem, which is he's only one guy.
- 45:05He's a very powerful guy. He's like taller.
- 45:07He's probably, he's probably like at least 14 feet tall.
- 45:11I'm not entirely sure, but like kind of crazy that he hid for so
- 45:15long. Like a 14 foot tall person would
- 45:17probably be really hard to miss. I'm not entirely sure lore
- 45:23people get get in the comments. Get in the comments, he might.
- 45:27Be he might be a perpetual, which is like the the Warhammer
- 45:3240,000 term for you come back every time like you can't
- 45:36actually really die and it's kind of a cheat.
- 45:38There's a character named John Gramaticus who's so deep in lore
- 45:42that a lot of people in the 40K community don't like because
- 45:46he's annoying in the lore, but that's so unimportant.
- 45:51Basically Emperor of Mankind does two things.
- 45:54He goes we need faster than light travel and I need more
- 45:57people like me to help conquer the Galaxy.
- 46:00So he basically splits himself up and by splitting himself up,
- 46:05I mean like put a part of him while maintaining his original
- 46:08self intact into. It's widely disputed.
- 46:13The correct answer is 21 individual sons.
- 46:19He's still the same guy. He's fine.
- 46:21But he has 21 sons. And they are what come to be
- 46:25known as the Primarks. OK, Primarks are the most
- 46:31probably the most important characters who are active in the
- 46:33setting as far as humanity goes. There are 21 of them.
- 46:41That's kind of a, that's like a somewhat minor spoiler lore
- 46:47wise, because originally there were only 20, but according to,
- 46:52you know, the most of most of the high-ranking government,
- 46:57there are only 18. And according to, and, and the
- 47:01propaganda that the, you know, that the, we'll get there.
- 47:06That's, I'm going to say a lot because there's so much shit
- 47:08happening. One of the things I admire most
- 47:11about the lore, this is also like another thing is that it is
- 47:14a collaborative effort among many authors to make something
- 47:17come to life where everyone kind of probably has to check in with
- 47:20each other and you get to write stories within the thing.
- 47:23But you can't have just one person making up all this.
- 47:27You have multiple writers coming in and saying, OK, we're going
- 47:30to have it do that. And you have the challenge of
- 47:33again keeping it a stalemate because if any one side wins
- 47:37then you kind of can't do anything story wise for the lore
- 47:39and it makes the game less exciting.
- 47:43So Emperor has 20 Suns and he's working on faster than light
- 47:47travel. And in looking for faster than
- 47:49light travel he discovered something called the warp.
- 47:52The warp is like sort of 1/5 dimension hopping away to
- 47:56shortcut to get ships across the Galaxy faster.
- 48:00But the warp is where I will call them space demons.
- 48:10There's that is what there's a faction called Chaos.
- 48:14Chaos is a very formidable foe, probably the most formidable one
- 48:24to humanity aside from all the aliens they couldn't genocide.
- 48:31Chaos used to and for the most part exists only within the
- 48:36warp. And you know, if it's, it's like
- 48:39a, I've heard it described as like being like a sea.
- 48:42And there are warp storms. And if you have psychic
- 48:45tendencies, which psychic is the magic system in this game.
- 48:49If you have psychic tendencies, that means that you get to tap
- 48:52into the warp, that you get to have some sort of power granted
- 48:56upon you by your connection to the warp.
- 48:58Most people can't handle it. Some people harness it to great
- 49:02use. And it doesn't matter what your
- 49:06race or or faction is, you there are psych psychic users.
- 49:13Sometimes, OK, there are some factions that aren't warp
- 49:16sensitive. There are some factions that
- 49:18refuse to use it. Most of them are like aliens.
- 49:21But as far as humanity goes, it kind of depends on how well you
- 49:25wield it or how well you hide it.
- 49:27Because in the current age, if you are psychic, they will just
- 49:32kill you. Because because there's there's
- 49:36an element of religious fanaticism as well, which we
- 49:39will get to again. OK.
- 49:43But basically, there are four major chaos gods in this warp
- 49:50domain. They I'll get to them later.
- 49:57I might have to say that a lot. This might go for a lot longer
- 49:59than you want it to go. I'm sorry, Phil.
- 50:02Hey. Bring it on.
- 50:05I'm I'm trying so hard to make this as concise as possible and
- 50:08it is so difficult. And share what you I mean, share
- 50:13as much as you want. I'm I'm finding to keep going
- 50:15and then go as deep as you want to.
- 50:17But also there's I think based off of what you said, 40 plus
- 50:22years of lore to cover here. So don't feel like you have to
- 50:25give us. A lot of it happened within the
- 50:27last 15. OK, so Emperor has 21 sons while
- 50:34concurrently working on travelling, having ships go
- 50:37through the warp. Chaos gods don't really want him
- 50:41to conquer the Galaxy or think he's getting a little too
- 50:43cheeky. So what they do is they take all
- 50:47of his sons and they catapult them to different parts of the
- 50:51Galaxy and he has to go find them.
- 50:54OK, eventually he does find 20 of the 21 sons.
- 51:00I think he meets all 21, but and then they eventually help him,
- 51:06you know, conquer more and more of the world.
- 51:13I'm I missed so much after backtrack for a second.
- 51:16That's all in the current era in in 40,000, the 41st Millennium,
- 51:22which we're in right now. You can't use any sort of
- 51:25computer technology on purpose. Something happened called the
- 51:30Dark Age of Technology in probably around the 20 thousands
- 51:33where AI basically took over and fucked shit up for everyone and
- 51:40it made the use of it any sort of computer heretical.
- 51:43And their workaround was to lobotomize people and use them
- 51:49to perform tasks that computers would have.
- 51:54So are you like, yeah, dark. That's what I'm that's what I'm
- 51:56saying. It's it's dark to the point of
- 51:58parody, almost like you can. And those lobotomized folks are
- 52:03called servitors. So you could be a door servitor,
- 52:06for example. You get lobotomized and your
- 52:08whole your whole brain is rewired to just like open an
- 52:11automatic door for people. My God.
- 52:14That's the rest of your life. Yeah, that also explains why
- 52:18humans can't and won't use technology to make their lives
- 52:22easier and better. So that's my tangent.
- 52:28Moving on. They're pretty successful in
- 52:31conquering the Galaxy. Chaos is still a thing.
- 52:35The Emperor's most successful son is named Horace Looper Call.
- 52:40Horace Looper Call turns to Chaos, gets in cahoots with
- 52:45Chaos because the Emperor is a great conqueror but an awful
- 52:51father and doesn't tell any of his kids what's going on.
- 52:55And eventually what happens is nine of his kids turn on him and
- 52:59ally with to some extent Chaos the Chaos demon like the four
- 53:04big chaos gods. And that is how you get the
- 53:09chaos factions in the game. These 21 primarks have something
- 53:16called Gene seed, which is also used to take normal people and
- 53:20create super soldiers out of and those are the poster children of
- 53:24the setting. They are called space marines.
- 53:26They are very yes you yeah, Space Marines are like the the
- 53:32large 8 foot tall, like super soldiers that wear power armor
- 53:37that's like the size of like a pickup truck and they can run at
- 53:4260 miles an hour or something stupid like that and have three
- 53:46hearts. No, like 2 hearts and three
- 53:48lungs against spit, acid and a bunch of other bullshit.
- 53:51I think the the two factions that I have heard of are Space
- 53:55Marines and Orcs and and I think Chaos is in there too.
- 53:59I don't know if there's more factions, I'm sure there.
- 54:00Are the three big trees are the Imperium of Man Chaos and then
- 54:06everybody else, everybody, everybody else is just, you
- 54:09know, that's it's anything alien and they're all kind of doing
- 54:12their own thing. They all have their own.
- 54:14I'll try to. I'll do a quick blurb of them
- 54:15once I'm finished with the Imperium of Man 'cause there's
- 54:17so much stuff to. Cover with them.
- 54:20Space Marines from a marketing perspective are what gets most
- 54:24people into Warhammer 40K 'cause it's cool to have an 8 foot tall
- 54:27guy firing a bullet the size of a thin can of soda at like a
- 54:36chaos thing or an alien thing. Anyway, that's more or less the
- 54:40primary conflict. That whole orbit is called the
- 54:44Horus Heresy and that was created by Games Workshop to
- 54:49justify allowing 2 people who play Space Marines to fight
- 54:53against each other on the game. Like they needed a way to say
- 54:57like hey these aren't all you know.
- 54:58Like I know it's all Imperium of Man and they're all allied, but
- 55:01like what if they weren't and that's how you do?
- 55:03What if they weren't? So, oh, I said nine Yes, before
- 55:10the Horus Heresy happens, two of the other Primarks and all of
- 55:15their Space Marines are wiped out of existence and wipe for
- 55:17record, and no one really knows how it happened.
- 55:20And that's a mystery that will never be revealed.
- 55:25OK, I'm sure there's lots of fun, like fan theories and
- 55:30stuff. I love that, that sort of thing.
- 55:32Space Marines are probably the coolest like human faction to
- 55:38play in the game, but there's also the Imperial Guard which
- 55:42are just picture like Starship Troopers.
- 55:45Imperial Guard is just a parody of Starship Troopers.
- 55:50They have a lot of different and and like a lot of them look like
- 55:53modern army people from from 2026.
- 55:56They just have you know, the standard like Flack armor,
- 55:59helmets. They have laz guns is their main
- 56:03weapon. It is a two hand rifle that you
- 56:07can charge and get more ammunition from, just like
- 56:11putting it in the sun for a little bit and it never jams and
- 56:14it is a very weak weapon in the game and in the war.
- 56:20When I think of Space Marines, sorry to go back to Space
- 56:22Marines. No, I'm going to.
- 56:23I'm going to lead for a little bit because I'm going to go on
- 56:25so many tangents unless you reel me in.
- 56:28When I think Space Marines, I think like what I'm picturing in
- 56:31my head is StarCraft like the StarCraft wearing the helmet?
- 56:37Super huge. It is exactly StarCraft.
- 56:40Fun fact about StarCraft. Originally, StarCraft was
- 56:45supposed to be a Warhammer 40,000 game.
- 56:47I I can see that, but Games Workshop.
- 56:51Games Workshop didn't give them the licensing to use their
- 56:53stuff. Got it.
- 56:55And then when StarCraft got successful, they never made that
- 56:58mistake again. Yes, picture.
- 57:06Like, yeah, If you're wondering what space rings look like,
- 57:08picture StarCraft. The general law tidbit about
- 57:12them is that because they are so powerful, they have lost a lot
- 57:16of their humanity and are very cold and very, you know,
- 57:20unsympathetic to regular people. If Space Marines show up while
- 57:24you're fighting, or just show up on your world that you're living
- 57:27on, you are probably in deep shit and they are not
- 57:31particularly motivated to save you.
- 57:36They're there, for one thing, they're there.
- 57:38They're there. To kill without.
- 57:39Living Humanity. There are, they're there to kill
- 57:41whoever the bad guy is because they're only interest is to
- 57:43conquering. Got it.
- 57:48Also important to note, the end of the Horus Heresy left the
- 57:52Emperor of Mankind basically on life support.
- 57:58He is presently in 40 in the 41st Millennium.
- 58:01Like rotting away on a throne for a multitude of different
- 58:05reasons. Like a lot of the most famous
- 58:07artwork of him is like half of his face is just bone, just a
- 58:11skull. He is the most powerful being
- 58:15that is allied with mankind and he can't do a damn thing, which
- 58:23kind of helps with the whole stalemate thing a little bit
- 58:25because he's very, he's a very powerful psycher and they just
- 58:28took him out of the game. But he doesn't really speak to
- 58:33anybody in the lore. He can't.
- 58:36So even though his main purpose is to, you know, conquer the
- 58:40world, he was very anti religion.
- 58:44But because he couldn't speak for himself, a lot of people
- 58:47just decided to make a religion out of him.
- 58:49So that's where a lot of the Super religious extremism comes
- 58:52into play with the authoritarian government.
- 58:54A lot of folks used the Emperor of Mankind and kind of they his
- 58:59name is the God Emperor of Mankind now and.
- 59:07We can deep dive into chess just.
- 59:09For a long time there are there are there are a lot of bad
- 59:12actors in the Imperium of Man, and that's definitely the point.
- 59:17So I'll do a couple other the Adeptus Mechanicus or another
- 59:20faction in the Imperium of Man. Their whole thing is like the
- 59:24flesh is weak. Most of them live on Mars.
- 59:27They are slowly removing the human and flesh parts of their
- 59:32body and replacing them with cybernetic implants to the as
- 59:35much as they can. And since new technology is
- 59:39verboten is verboten. Their whole thing is just
- 59:43rediscovering old technology that doesn't have to use
- 59:45computers. So anytime any new thing is
- 59:48brought to to like the the Mankind faction in Warner and
- 59:5340K, it's just we found a thing from before because you're not
- 1:00:01really allowed to invent anything new or change anything
- 1:00:05old. However, I think.
- 1:00:07That's how you get, that's how you get from the year 2000 to
- 1:00:10the year 40,000 without significantly changing.
- 1:00:14Yeah, that doesn't stop some folks, but honestly, the more
- 1:00:18power you have in the setting, the more bullshit you can get
- 1:00:21away with that would, you know, kill a normal person.
- 1:00:24It's very much like a the law. What what is it?
- 1:00:29The there's an in Group that the law protects but doesn't bind.
- 1:00:33There's an ACT group that the law binds but doesn't protect in
- 1:00:37with within just the human faction, and they're all one
- 1:00:40group. That chaos is a whole other
- 1:00:42thing. You can become as an old person,
- 1:00:46a chaos cultist, which means that you start worshipping one
- 1:00:48of the four chaos gods. They are Corn, Nergal, Zinch and
- 1:00:54Sloanesh. And Corn is kind of like your
- 1:00:58typical like picture, like, you know, a lot of devil
- 1:01:02interpretations. That's where the phrase.
- 1:01:04Was spelled. I feel like I mean KHORNE.
- 1:01:09That's. Where that's where you've heard
- 1:01:10like the blood for the blood gods, skulls for the skull
- 1:01:12throne. That's Korn.
- 1:01:15His whole faction is just mostly hand to hand melee combat, but
- 1:01:22also honor. So his followers just care for
- 1:01:28fighting, for slaughter, for murder, for wants and just
- 1:01:31violence of people. That's his whole thing.
- 1:01:34But he will never stab you in the back, he will never lie to
- 1:01:37you. Then on the opposite side of
- 1:01:41Cornea, Zinch. Zinch is like the trickster
- 1:01:43chaos God, very much about planning, very much about magic,
- 1:01:47very much about keeping the world in entropy and on its
- 1:01:51toes. Xench's sort of motif, I mean,
- 1:01:56no one's ever seen any of the chaos 'cause we don't really
- 1:01:58know what they look like. We just kind of have
- 1:02:00approximations. A lot of Xench's motifs are bird
- 1:02:05like. A lot of his avatars are like
- 1:02:08picture like us, almost Serpentine bird with two heads
- 1:02:10or something that will come down and fuck shit up.
- 1:02:13And a lot of the more psychic leading factions in the game
- 1:02:20have a lot to do that are is in cahoots with Zeege because he
- 1:02:25will grant them magic powers to do stuff.
- 1:02:29Then you have Nergal. Nergal's whole thing is like
- 1:02:33plague, disease, sickness. Followers of Nergal are
- 1:02:36relatively happy because they're just slowly rotting away and
- 1:02:41have every like awful disease, super diseases, but they don't
- 1:02:46feel any of it because, you know, death is certain.
- 1:02:49But they're just happy to to be there.
- 1:02:52Yeah, if your shtick is pestilence, yeah, I mean, that's
- 1:02:56pretty easy to come by, right? Nergal allied armies are pretty
- 1:03:04tanky and pretty slow, and they've hit pretty hard from as
- 1:03:10far as I know. And then there's Slanesh.
- 1:03:14Slanesh's whole thing is excess sex, drugs, rock'n'roll,
- 1:03:17pleasure, pain. There are the the Space Marine
- 1:03:22unit that is the most closely aligned with with Slanesh are
- 1:03:25called the Emperor's Children. Which is really funny because
- 1:03:30that was their name before the heresy and they just kept it to
- 1:03:32be like fuck you dad. But they have a unit called
- 1:03:36Noise Marines, which is a unit of Space Marines that use Sonic
- 1:03:40weapons that are so powerful that they like disintegrate
- 1:03:44people into just nothing. But it's just the pursuit of
- 1:03:50more, whatever more means to you.
- 1:03:51If that's more, you know, sloth, if that's more, you know, drug
- 1:03:56consumption, just like feeling more stuff.
- 1:04:00Salinash units tend to be fairly live fairly fast and also very
- 1:04:06terrifying, very much into torturing.
- 1:04:07Corn is not into torturing because torturing doesn't kill
- 1:04:10you. And it's not so much fighting as
- 1:04:12it is it's not fair. Like right, all four of the
- 1:04:16Chaos gods sometimes cooperate with with each other if they
- 1:04:19have to, but often don't. They don't like each other and
- 1:04:23they try to get one up on each other all the time.
- 1:04:26And that is referred to as the great game.
- 1:04:28Like when that's part of why also all these factions are in a
- 1:04:31statement because if Chaos decided to just put the
- 1:04:36differences aside and come together, they would probably
- 1:04:38just destroy everything and rule the entire the entire.
- 1:04:41World, they balance each other out, yeah.
- 1:04:43And but also, you know, they get power from what normal people
- 1:04:48do. If you hope for something to
- 1:04:52change, just like you know, by coincidence, you are indirectly
- 1:05:00worshipping and giving power to siege.
- 1:05:02OK. If you are working on a skill
- 1:05:06and you take pride in the work that you've done on that skill
- 1:05:09and you want to get better at that skill, you are indirectly
- 1:05:12worshipping Slim Ash. There are things that.
- 1:05:15Yeah. So like you kind of can't,
- 1:05:19couldn't like those chaos gods are kind of always going to be
- 1:05:21there. You can't really get rid of
- 1:05:23them. That's a very.
- 1:05:26Interesting concept and I like that.
- 1:05:31I like the I like the possibilities that come with
- 1:05:33that that concept from a like storytelling perspective.
- 1:05:37That's that's very cool. I mean honestly, I don't know
- 1:05:43how much lore really delves deep into that because I haven't read
- 1:05:48like a proper lore book. Again, most of my most of my
- 1:05:52knowledge comes from podcasts that are meant to be
- 1:05:55entertaining. That's fantastic.
- 1:05:59I was gonna, I was gonna say, how many of these books have you
- 1:06:01read? And the answer is zero.
- 1:06:02And that is shocking to me. Like I like for somebody who's
- 1:06:06having such a hard time relaying the most information in the
- 1:06:09least time, I know very little wild.
- 1:06:16And that's just like 2 of the three big kind of branches of
- 1:06:19the tree. The last one is Zenos, which are
- 1:06:22just all the alien factions and that is where I live.
- 1:06:25Those are my favorites. Even when I didn't know anything
- 1:06:28about Orcs, I loved like like the first armies I saw were
- 1:06:31Necrons and Tyranids, that those are the armies my cousins
- 1:06:34painted. So there's kind.
- 1:06:38Of Ron sounds super familiar to me and I know a.
- 1:06:41Little bit of that. I'm actually going to start with
- 1:06:44Eldar though. Eldar are space elves, that's
- 1:06:49it. You got your space elves, you
- 1:06:52got your space orgs, Yeah. They they have an aesthetic
- 1:06:56that's somewhat reminiscent of feudal Japan.
- 1:07:02Their whole thing was they were kind of like the prevailing, you
- 1:07:06know, faction and and species before humanity and they got to
- 1:07:13a point where they were they were created by another race of
- 1:07:17aliens called the old ones. That's a whole other thing
- 1:07:19That's like predating humanity even.
- 1:07:21That's, that's why I was like, you want to start with humans or
- 1:07:24do you want to start with aliens?
- 1:07:27Fuck, I guess we, I, I should talk about the war in heaven.
- 1:07:29OK, so 6060 million years ago, just a little leap to the past.
- 1:07:36Yeah. Just a just a just a quick
- 1:07:37little jaunt. There's the oh, fuck.
- 1:07:42I guess we should start with Necrons then.
- 1:07:44The first, the the oldest. OK, the oldest species that you
- 1:07:50can play on tabletop that is still present in 40K is the
- 1:07:53Necrons. They were an ancient alien race
- 1:07:57that used to be known as the Neck Frontier.
- 1:07:59They were very technologically advanced and they lived on
- 1:08:04average 25 years of age because they had awful space cancer.
- 1:08:09They went to another race of aliens called the Old Ones and
- 1:08:13asked hey can you help us with our space cancer and the old one
- 1:08:16said fuck off. Then they found these other gods
- 1:08:25the Katan which are like star gods and they didn't exist in
- 1:08:29material space but the neck frontier made statues to them
- 1:08:32and they did exist and they made a deal to with a Katan God
- 1:08:39called the deceiver. You'll see how this goes to
- 1:08:44basically end the suffering of the awful space cancer they
- 1:08:47have. The deceive the deceiver when
- 1:08:50they made the deal, so it seems like just really a bad choice
- 1:08:54probably. Not anyway.
- 1:08:58The Deceiver does this thing called biotransference where all
- 1:09:03of the Necron people are stripped of their, you know,
- 1:09:08like corporeal bodies and their consciousness is put into these
- 1:09:13like robot like metal robot husks.
- 1:09:16That's how you get the Necrons, which are basically the like
- 1:09:20sort of ancient Egypt coded space terminators.
- 1:09:22That's how I would describe the Necrons to anyone who's not
- 1:09:25really familiar. And there's a lot of fun.
- 1:09:27Like they're also kind of a funnier faction now because
- 1:09:30they've been around so long and because a lot of it is like
- 1:09:33nobility and backstabbing within their faction.
- 1:09:36But Necrons get screwed and then they start fighting with the old
- 1:09:41ones. The Old ones create 2 races of
- 1:09:43alien which are the Eldar and the orcs to deal with the
- 1:09:45Necrons. The Necrons eventually since
- 1:09:54they can't kill the Catan star. Gods that fucked with them.
- 1:09:59They split their bodies up into little pieces and enslaved them
- 1:10:04in shards, and now they can wield the power of a God on the
- 1:10:10battlefield. So.
- 1:10:11They're like a Iron Man suit. Not entirely.
- 1:10:20It's it's hard to like, not entirely.
- 1:10:22I don't entirely know how to do it, but they, like the Necrons
- 1:10:27are are the most technologically advanced faction in the game.
- 1:10:33They have a weapon that can supernova stars that they just
- 1:10:38don't use because reasons. The reason is it would break the
- 1:10:44game and it would break the lore, but they don't use it.
- 1:10:47The other thing I should note with them is the Silent King who
- 1:10:51is the Necron nobility like noble who made the deal with the
- 1:10:55deceiver felt a lot of penance for having everyone
- 1:11:00biotransferred and basically anyone who wasn't a noble and
- 1:11:05that that was a Necron tear basically lost their soul, lost
- 1:11:08their personality and just became an unthinking unfeeling
- 1:11:10robot. And so as penance, he for 60
- 1:11:15million years went into like a deep like had all of the Necrons
- 1:11:20go into two worlds and rest and they're just now waking up in
- 1:11:24the 41st Millennium or so and coming back to fight.
- 1:11:27People are discovering 2 worlds and the Necrons are waking up
- 1:11:29and fucking shit up and stuff. But he just went to be alone in
- 1:11:33space for 60 million years to think about and kind of just be
- 1:11:41sort of penance for what he did to his people.
- 1:11:44So that's their story. So like.
- 1:11:45A long time too. It's very tragic.
- 1:11:48That's part of where a. Lot of like 80 ish years on
- 1:11:51earth and I'm like man that that's plenty for me.
- 1:11:54The other thing with that, and that's where a lot of the cure
- 1:11:57with Necrons comes from, is because when you're around for
- 1:11:59that long, you get old still like, but also like I think
- 1:12:04there's a book where they like they have art, there are plays,
- 1:12:07and to watch a Necron play, it's like it takes three years just
- 1:12:10to watch it. Because what time doesn't matter
- 1:12:14if you what? Time does it matter immortal
- 1:12:15exactly. But like some of the robots get
- 1:12:19robot dementia. Like there's this character
- 1:12:20named Nemesis or Zandrek who I love.
- 1:12:24He is a Necron that still thinks that he is a Necron tear and
- 1:12:29thinks that every other being that he encounters is also a
- 1:12:35Necron tier. So like he'll see an orc and go
- 1:12:39oh that Necron tier person is very green and large and
- 1:12:44brutish. That's very strange, but
- 1:12:50simultaneously he's like this great military mind like and but
- 1:12:53like that's part of the Necrons like silliness is that they all
- 1:12:57kind of have these weird quirks, but they have a lot of
- 1:12:59personality now that in the last 15 years they just got they
- 1:13:03didn't have it prior to that. Like, so much more has happened
- 1:13:06in the last 15 years that it's like, it's such a different
- 1:13:08thing now than it was, you know, even when I got into the hobby,
- 1:13:12like as a very small child. Anyway, Old Ones create the
- 1:13:17Eldar and the Orcs. They're kind of two sides of the
- 1:13:18same coin. Eldar, space elves.
- 1:13:21They are very intelligent, very passionate people.
- 1:13:24They feel everything to a greater degree than humans can.
- 1:13:29And they, after the Necrons go to sleep and after the orcs kind
- 1:13:35of fuck off, do their own thing. They have a very peaceful
- 1:13:39society for many, many years and that leads to boredom and that
- 1:13:43leads to debauchery and that leads to they doom themselves.
- 1:13:49To be all this time to be an Eldar is like a very sad
- 1:13:53existence. Basically the Chaos gods Lanesh
- 1:13:56that I mentioned earlier, they birthed just from doing so much
- 1:13:59debauchery shit. And because of that, if an Eldar
- 1:14:05dies, Slanesh claims their soul immediately.
- 1:14:09So their whole like kind of motive in the setting is to
- 1:14:12avoid that fate as best they can.
- 1:14:16And a lot of them do it in different ways.
- 1:14:18The main faction of Eldar are called craft worlds since they
- 1:14:20don't have a planet to go home to.
- 1:14:23A lot of Eldar just like live on these giant continent sized
- 1:14:27ships called craft worlds and they just float around space on
- 1:14:30these giant fucking ships and so cool those are the ones.
- 1:14:35Like many directions, the lore goes like there's like, it's
- 1:14:39like all-encompassing of like every any other world of lore
- 1:14:44that I've. That's part of why I love it is
- 1:14:47because there's so much in the world building.
- 1:14:48It's that intense. The craft worlds are like just
- 1:14:55one faction. Those people who got out before
- 1:14:56it got really bad who were like stop doing their debauchery for
- 1:14:59a second and went wait a minute I probably should be doing this.
- 1:15:01They left before all the bad should happen.
- 1:15:03Most of the Eldar are just dead and claimed by Slimesh.
- 1:15:07There's also another faction of Eldar called the Dukari who are
- 1:15:10like kind of the dark elf equivalent in space.
- 1:15:12They live in one city called Camara, and the way they stave
- 1:15:16off Slanesh is by not using any of their magic, not using any of
- 1:15:20their psychic, and just doing debaucherous shit still anyway
- 1:15:24to keep Slanesh appeased. So they will do like crazy body
- 1:15:30modifications, they'll have like gladiatorial pits and it's just
- 1:15:32like 1 space city in the entire Galaxy where they are, where
- 1:15:35they exist. And then there's they just.
- 1:15:38An action that you can like play as though.
- 1:15:41Or you can play as drukari, you can play as eldari like or craft
- 1:15:45royal dar. You could also play newly this
- 1:15:49is they just put these out exodites which are space elves
- 1:15:52that ride on dinosaurs. They were a thing in the war for
- 1:15:58a very long time. They just got models.
- 1:15:59I feel like I could just flip that.
- 1:16:02I felt like they just clip you saying space elves that ride on
- 1:16:04dinosaurs and that's it. That's.
- 1:16:06Roll credits. It's done.
- 1:16:07We're done. Another another faction of LR
- 1:16:12Harlequins. Space clowns.
- 1:16:15Space out clowns. They are actually a very
- 1:16:18terrifying and elite army that treat combat as a sort of
- 1:16:24performance. They have a lot of cool lore.
- 1:16:26I if I didn't, if I wasn't an orc player, I'd probably play
- 1:16:28Harlequins. I'm always drawn to like the the
- 1:16:33Bard class or like the former. Class.
- 1:16:35They are definitely more Bard, probably the closest to Bard as
- 1:16:39you can in a game that centers entirely around combat.
- 1:16:43Right, I guess that's as much Eldar as I can do right now.
- 1:16:48Orcs pretty self-explanatory. They have a sort of collective
- 1:16:53psychic might that is known as the Wah, which is a powerful
- 1:16:58force that can all tap into to do crazy shenanigans.
- 1:17:00And it was through the power of belief that they get stuff done.
- 1:17:03For example, if you are an orc boy and you are not keeping
- 1:17:06track of how many bullets you fired, you have unlimited ammo
- 1:17:11naturally, like via via just a collective psychic might.
- 1:17:15So in a way. Magic that lets them.
- 1:17:19It yeah, in a way. Olivia's and how that empowers
- 1:17:22them, yes. There are a lot of jokes to come
- 1:17:24about because of this. I I hope the one I just said is
- 1:17:27more grounded in the realism of the lore, but I'm not entirely
- 1:17:30sure. Like people would joke like oh
- 1:17:32they can breathe in space because they didn't realize it
- 1:17:34and once they did realize they couldn't breathe in space they
- 1:17:36all died. Like that's a funny 1 or like
- 1:17:41there's a there's a story about like like kind of a a a higher
- 1:17:46echelon or commander who like went back in time just to kill
- 1:17:50his past self to get a second copy of his gun.
- 1:17:56I mean, you know, that's a, that's a great strategy.
- 1:17:59No, they're they're, they're a lot of fun and they have a lot
- 1:18:04of unique lore and I'm trying to think if there's anything cool
- 1:18:07with them happening right now. I can't quite think of anything
- 1:18:13if like the the most notable character in the orcs is this
- 1:18:20character named Gospel Magurik Thraka, that is.
- 1:18:24A little bit of a mouthful. Yes, he he is considered to be a
- 1:18:30prophet who basically just wants to lead all of Orkdom to what if
- 1:18:35there was a big fight and we all came.
- 1:18:38That's his whole that's his whole thing, because that's
- 1:18:41their that's their whole reason for being is they just want to
- 1:18:43fight because it's fun for the love of the game.
- 1:18:47Don't entirely need a reason, but in a way Ork society is kind
- 1:18:50of awesome to be in. Their currency is their teeth,
- 1:18:55and their teeth are yes, just their end to end.
- 1:18:59And you can get them however you want.
- 1:19:00You can grow them yourself and pull them out, or you can knock
- 1:19:02them out of another orc boy and use those as your currency and
- 1:19:06they will always grow back. It's kind of a perfect society.
- 1:19:09You just use your teeth as currency to buy whatever you
- 1:19:12need and you always have a supply of it.
- 1:19:18I don't know how that works economically, but I like it.
- 1:19:24I mean, if you got an unlimited money factory in your mouth,
- 1:19:27like, yeah, you've kind of got a mate that.
- 1:19:30I'm I have too much empathy and now I'm thinking about ripping
- 1:19:34my own teeth out to pay for things and I don't.
- 1:19:36I don't really like where that makes my brain go.
- 1:19:39Also, unlike Eldar, orcs feel less pain so OK, so if they lose
- 1:19:45an arm or if they lose a head, it's funny.
- 1:19:50And they just regrow because they are fungi.
- 1:19:53Some of them do, some of them don't.
- 1:19:54OK, another thing with the with the this power of collective
- 1:19:59belief they have, the law allows them to like a lot of orc
- 1:20:02weapons nobody else can operate because it only works via the
- 1:20:06psychic mic of orcs. Like when humans get ahold of
- 1:20:09orc tech, they don't know what to do with it.
- 1:20:11They're just like this vehicle. This bike has wheels and no
- 1:20:16engine and it still drives. Just stuff like that.
- 1:20:25It's they're, they're a lot of fun.
- 1:20:27That's like the secret, like I believe it.
- 1:20:30So it's true. Yes.
- 1:20:32It's yeah, the they operate on just another like another plane
- 1:20:37of logic and reality that makes them a lot of fun to wield.
- 1:20:40They are very much depicted in the lore as being really like
- 1:20:43stupid and that's kind of fun. It does get old sometimes.
- 1:20:47But like they are in like in the in the actual universe, they are
- 1:20:51a very, very menacing threat. I guess moving on from them, the
- 1:20:56scariest thing that is in the Galaxy right now probably is the
- 1:21:00Tyranids, which are basically imagine a very large and very
- 1:21:04adaptable army of the Xenomorph from Alien.
- 1:21:09That sounds terrifying and I would imagine these are what
- 1:21:13became the zerg in the. Yeah, this is the Zerg.
- 1:21:17This is the bugs from Starship Troopers.
- 1:21:20Hive or what is it called? Is it the Hive in in Halo?
- 1:21:25Probably the Flood in Halo, that's what.
- 1:21:29It was another thing you will learn if you get too into this
- 1:21:32lore is that Games Workshop steals a lot from other IPS.
- 1:21:37So yeah, Tyranids are very much more locked.
- 1:21:39The Xenomorph all like there are a lot of high fleets.
- 1:21:44The scariest part of the Tyranids is that they different
- 1:21:48high fleets have been spotted in the Galaxy around just randomly
- 1:21:53different spots. So like an all on the outskirts.
- 1:21:56So they're moving in and basically it's implied that the
- 1:21:59entire Galaxy. Also I have blue tack on.
- 1:22:01I have poster attack on my hands.
- 1:22:02I've been playing it with it the whole time.
- 1:22:08I use them for to like to put arms and legs on stuff just to
- 1:22:13see how it looks. It's like a temporary fastener
- 1:22:18and also it's a great fidget toy.
- 1:22:23Let's see, periods will go to a planet and they will just rob it
- 1:22:28of all of its resources. Their whole thing is just we're
- 1:22:30hungry, we need to eat. And if like it doesn't matter if
- 1:22:33it's a plant, an animal, any sort of any sort of living
- 1:22:38matter Organism, they just harvest and digest and eat it
- 1:22:42and leave the pet the planet as just like rock and maybe some
- 1:22:44water. Like that's their whole
- 1:22:47terrifying thing. They it is implied they're just
- 1:22:51encircling the entire Galaxy and they've just been around and
- 1:22:56kind of already eaten everything else that isn't the Galaxy.
- 1:22:59I feel like there's so much in nightmare fuel in and I guess
- 1:23:03that's kind of the point, right? It's this grim dark worlds and.
- 1:23:07Yes that is the whole .2 nids are absolutely terrifying and
- 1:23:12then I guess the the last faction I'm I'm trying to think
- 1:23:15if I'm missing anything. I don't think I am the last
- 1:23:17faction the the Tao Empire, which is the closest thing you
- 1:23:19have to a good guy in the setting.
- 1:23:22They are a they're meant to be a collective of multiple different
- 1:23:27alien species that practice a sort of a sort of space
- 1:23:31socialism. They're kind of modeled off of
- 1:23:33like Gundam. A lot of their societies like
- 1:23:37very collective living. Most of their combat is long
- 1:23:41range to prolong, you know, the lives of the collective as best
- 1:23:46as they can. They have some cool characters
- 1:23:51too. There's a character named
- 1:23:52Commander Farsight who I can't really think about or remember
- 1:23:57much about in this present moment, but he's a very cool
- 1:24:02character. All of the Tao like the they'll
- 1:24:05wear these giant Gundam mech suits to do a lot of fighting
- 1:24:09and they'll have a lot of drones kind of flying around and that
- 1:24:12take fire for them. So they're not hurting anyone
- 1:24:15like they're they're they're kind of nice.
- 1:24:17That's pretty cool. It's implied that there's they,
- 1:24:21they're not perfect. They do the caste system and it
- 1:24:23is implied that they're using pheromones or like mind control
- 1:24:26or something to keep all of their like, you know, denizens
- 1:24:31pacified. But they are collected.
- 1:24:33Like there are humans in the Tao Empire.
- 1:24:35They they will bring humans into their world.
- 1:24:37There's a lot of like the other kind of miscellaneous alien
- 1:24:40species that are in the that are in the Galaxy are kind of
- 1:24:43allied. I feel like that probably opens
- 1:24:46up to like a lot of a cool story as well I guess.
- 1:24:51Yeah, if you if you want to not feel as bad about it.
- 1:24:55If you want to play the least worst of the terrible
- 1:24:59affections. So that is, that is as best I
- 1:25:02can do of a cursory overview. I think that's fantastic.
- 1:25:07I I feel like I've learned a lot of things.
- 1:25:14Yeah. I was just like, you know how
- 1:25:15you would get started into this? I guess you just pick up a
- 1:25:17podcast or book and. Yeah, there are some dive.
- 1:25:19In good. Lore videos that are a little
- 1:25:21better at explaining it than I am, but there's, there's so much
- 1:25:26to dive into. There's so much cool stuff.
- 1:25:28I I forgot about the adaptive sororities which are a human
- 1:25:33faction and they're all like their tagline is nuns with guns.
- 1:25:39Elves on dinosaurs clown. Elves, nuns, guns.
- 1:25:43Trying to think of like another fun tagline for for Warhammer
- 1:25:4840,000 and I can't right now. But yeah, it's it.
- 1:25:53It's, I think what I love most about the lore is just that it
- 1:25:56is. It feels like you, you can't dip
- 1:26:03a toe into it and know where you are.
- 1:26:06There's no starting point. All the lore kind of feels like
- 1:26:09a giant Mobius strip. There's no easy way to get into
- 1:26:13it until you know enough. And then once you know enough,
- 1:26:15you can kind of navigate your way around.
- 1:26:19I my mind is like. OK, Eric Werheim.
- 1:26:31Yeah, you. Mentioned John Grammaticus
- 1:26:33earlier and I wrote that down because that name is very funny.
- 1:26:39Where where does he fit in? You mentioned he fits in like.
- 1:26:41Everywhere there's there is a other storyline of a group of
- 1:26:46perpetuals called the Cabal in the lore who are just a group of
- 1:26:51just like observed Observatory shadowy figures that kind of to
- 1:26:56determine the course of all the events of the story that no one
- 1:26:59really knows a whole lot about. He's one of them and he's very
- 1:27:02bothersome to a lot of people that are in the fan base, but I
- 1:27:05don't know much more than that. If you want to get into funny
- 1:27:08names, anger on anger on anger on, you want to take a you want
- 1:27:16to take a gander at what his bid is, He's angry.
- 1:27:20He's very angry. He is a Primark.
- 1:27:24He is a Primark that is on the chaos side.
- 1:27:28He he's like the main Primark of the World Eaters, which are the
- 1:27:31factory that serves the chaos God corn blood for the blood guy
- 1:27:34to skull for the skull throne that that guy.
- 1:27:36And right now he's a demon Primark.
- 1:27:39He has these giant wings and his skin is entirely red and he's
- 1:27:43very, very angry and he, like his life, is very tragic and
- 1:27:48painful. There's this piece of technology
- 1:27:52in the four DK lore called the Butcher's Nails, which are a
- 1:27:56cranial implant that makes it so you feel in immense pain unless
- 1:28:02you are angry and being violent. My.
- 1:28:05Gosh, as a as he was growing up, he had to fight in gladiatorial
- 1:28:09pits on the home world. He was kind of thrown to
- 1:28:12catapult the two. And when the emperor found him,
- 1:28:15he was a bad dad, didn't help him get the butcher's nails
- 1:28:18taken out, didn't do anything good for him, didn't help his
- 1:28:20home planet or nothing. And so it was a lot easier for
- 1:28:23Angran to just be like, well, fuck you, man.
- 1:28:27There's a character I'm trying to think of like other
- 1:28:29characters. Oh, there's an Imperial Guard
- 1:28:32character, just like a random army guy named Sly Marbo Slime
- 1:28:37Arbo SLY Sly Marbo. Sly Marbo Marbo being an anagram
- 1:28:44for Rambo. It's just Sylvester Stallone.
- 1:28:47And you do and you do. Chuck Norris jokes with him.
- 1:28:51That's his whole thing. These named characters that you
- 1:28:56you're mentioning, are these like characters that you can buy
- 1:29:00you? Can.
- 1:29:01Buy angry have as part of your army.
- 1:29:03Yes, you can buy Angry and you can buy Slime Marbo.
- 1:29:06You can buy Karan the Betrayer, you can buy the Katan Shard of
- 1:29:12the Deceiver, you can buy it's again.
- 1:29:16And they're all so silly. Oh my goodness gracious.
- 1:29:19I'm trying to think of like another funny character.
- 1:29:22Not as funny as anger on. There's a character named
- 1:29:23Percherabo. He's just kind of annoyed all
- 1:29:28the time. No, he's also a Chaos Primark or
- 1:29:32I guess a traitor Primark. He doesn't really like the whole
- 1:29:34chaos mutation thing. He's the Primark of the Iron
- 1:29:37Warriors. They are very, very bad, bad
- 1:29:40bunch. His whole thing is just his
- 1:29:43whole battle strategy is just like throw everything at it
- 1:29:46until it's gone. Just the more stuff you have,
- 1:29:49the more you can manufacture, the more you make, the easier it
- 1:29:52will go down. Like he he is a very kind of
- 1:29:57awful character. So.
- 1:30:00I'm curious about the application of the war and
- 1:30:04storytelling into the game. So like you, let's say Lucas
- 1:30:08goes to a local game shop on a Wednesday night and is going to
- 1:30:11play a four hour game of Warhammer 4000.
- 1:30:17What is this? How do you how do you fit into
- 1:30:19the storytelling of it all? Or is it like every like you and
- 1:30:24your person that you're playing against come up with the reason
- 1:30:28why the combat is happening or. In 7th edition, SO4 editions
- 1:30:35ago, yes. Now it's just kind of a match
- 1:30:39play and the story you're telling is really just the
- 1:30:41battle itself. I don't think you're thinking
- 1:30:43about motive or you know, what the implication of that battle
- 1:30:47is in the larger context of the universe.
- 1:30:49I think nowadays if you're going and playing the game you're just
- 1:30:51planning to play, which is unfortunate, but there actually
- 1:30:55was not in 40K, but in fantasy there was a promotional thing
- 1:30:58they did where in warmer fantasy you got to determine the outcome
- 1:31:04of like an actual lore event based on battle reports that
- 1:31:06people have. That was that was cool.
- 1:31:08And I think they, I think they went back on that anyway.
- 1:31:14That's that's really neat. I've that that's that's too bad
- 1:31:19that didn't. Work.
- 1:31:20That's what I'm what I'm realizing in real time when
- 1:31:22we're having this conversation, is that Games Workshop really
- 1:31:24used to care about the people who are buying their shit, and
- 1:31:27they don't anymore. Yeah.
- 1:31:30I mean, you know, whatever you want to say about corporations,
- 1:31:33I feel like they ought to kind of end up the same.
- 1:31:36True, however much money we can make.
- 1:31:37I would think though that like lowering the barrier to entry
- 1:31:42would make them more money, but I guess I don't know.
- 1:31:47I think that it's, I mean 40K Warhammer in general has gotten
- 1:31:52really popular over the last couple years I think probably
- 1:31:57because of the Space Marine video game.
- 1:31:59As was saying, tie insurance to video games.
- 1:32:01And like Henry Cavill, being a fan of it and wanting to do some
- 1:32:05media with it. What is it?
- 1:32:07Henry Cavill? A fan of DC, evidently.
- 1:32:18But shit, where is it going with this?
- 1:32:20Oh my God. Oh there is a version of the
- 1:32:25game you can play where you don't need to buy a bunch of
- 1:32:27minis called Kill Team. If you were you know Kill Team
- 1:32:31is instead of fielding 30 miniatures you field Max like 10
- 1:32:37and that's a quicker game. It's more of a skirmish combat
- 1:32:40thing than it is a you know, full army scale battle thing.
- 1:32:45And that's probably how I will begin playing.
- 1:32:48Is like kill team, just bring 5 models and then go to town.
- 1:32:52Have fun. These don't have to.
- 1:32:55Yeah, it's not as. The time or the the the
- 1:32:58finances? Yes, it is not as intense of a
- 1:33:01financial commitment to play kill team, which is nice.
- 1:33:03Although GW are now Privy to this and they are changing kill
- 1:33:07teams so that old kill teams are no longer tournament legal.
- 1:33:12Of course not how? Whatever they can do to.
- 1:33:17To squeeze, squeeze people drive the fan, the fan bases that are
- 1:33:21hated by the people who are responsible for the media the
- 1:33:25most are like Warhammer, magic the Gathering and the NFL.
- 1:33:30Those three like those three like companies just like hate,
- 1:33:40hate the people who love the thing they make, which is a
- 1:33:43shame. Oh my God, Like the NFL
- 1:33:47especially, and we don't need to get into that right now, but
- 1:33:49it's like. Are you a big Eagles fan?
- 1:33:53I'm guessing. Purely based off of where you
- 1:33:54live. OK, huge eagles fan and not but
- 1:33:57I wasn't always I used to this is going to be a a tangent.
- 1:34:01You could you could, you could make the episode wherever 40,000
- 1:34:04and then like parentheses and then we would.
- 1:34:06Slowly dip into the Eagles. My parents used to watch every
- 1:34:11game when the Eagles weren't quite as good.
- 1:34:14And I, I would, I would ask like, why do you do this to
- 1:34:18yourselves? Why do you go in and have this
- 1:34:21much faith in a team that just lets you down constantly?
- 1:34:23And it wasn't until I, it wasn't until I was in Philadelphia when
- 1:34:29we won the NFC championship before the Super Bowl against
- 1:34:33the Patriots that I understood it's it.
- 1:34:37That's what love is. Love is love is being there for
- 1:34:40something even though it lets you down.
- 1:34:42Love is being there for something unconditionally.
- 1:34:45And as much as Eagles fans will pelt Santa Claus with snowballs
- 1:34:52and yell at A.J. Brown, we love this thing.
- 1:34:55We do it because we care. We love like and and I have
- 1:35:03never felt like more of a part of a community like then I have
- 1:35:08just being an eagles fan in Philadelphia.
- 1:35:10You wear an eagles like any eagles merch outside of your
- 1:35:13home. A stranger will be like, hey, go
- 1:35:15birds like it's it's a beautiful thing.
- 1:35:18And like having like this one very shorthand common interest
- 1:35:24is like a very I got a very special thing.
- 1:35:26It kind of it kind of makes the entire city of Philadelphia feel
- 1:35:29like it's own quasi third space. Catherine, who is the producer
- 1:35:33for, you know, Kids Anonymous, she's also a an eagles fan.
- 1:35:37And we were at Warped Tour doing some media stuff and she was
- 1:35:42wearing something eagles and the security guards just like go
- 1:35:46birds and let her through like. When we were on tour, we went to
- 1:35:51an Eagles bar in Atlanta and watched a game and that was a
- 1:35:54lot of fun too. Like you will find.
- 1:35:56The other cool thing about being an Eagles fan in particular is
- 1:35:58you will like find diehards kind of anywhere you go.
- 1:36:02There are a lot of casual Cowboys fans in Philadelphia,
- 1:36:05though. I I grew up in San Diego and I
- 1:36:11am a Tartars fan very much for the same reason.
- 1:36:14Like, I was there when the the one and only time we went to the
- 1:36:17Super Bowl and got absolutely decimated by the 49ers when I
- 1:36:23was like in second grade. When they moved just to LA, were
- 1:36:28you devastated? I was.
- 1:36:29Devastated. I was living in Florida at the
- 1:36:31time. I was like, I'm not a Chargers
- 1:36:32fan anymore. I can't believe they would
- 1:36:34leave. I was like, I'm going to be a
- 1:36:37Buccaneers fan. I'm going to pick another team.
- 1:36:39That lasted for like maybe a season, half of a season, and I
- 1:36:43was like, I got to go back. I almost named my son, my son's
- 1:36:47name was almost and I I say this and it's not a joke like my wife
- 1:36:52and I were very close to this. My son's name was almost Philip
- 1:36:55Rivers Cuomo middle name so that he could be Philip Rivers and
- 1:37:00Rivers Cuomo. Awesome.
- 1:37:02That's probably my biggest regret is not just signing, not
- 1:37:05not writing that on the the birth certificate.
- 1:37:10Yeah, your middle name when you're first name are before and
- 1:37:12after on Jeopardy. That's, that's awesome.
- 1:37:24I again, part of I'm very grateful to be an Eagles fan.
- 1:37:27I hope that we never moved from Philadelphia.
- 1:37:28I'd be devastated. I cannot imagine that
- 1:37:31Philadelphia would ever allow that to happen.
- 1:37:34I would hope that we just make the NFL too much money.
- 1:37:37They wouldn't. Yeah.
- 1:37:38But like, that's why it like some fan bases like have to kind
- 1:37:46of live scared and I feel bad for them.
- 1:37:48Like if you're like a like a Falcons fan or like a hell,
- 1:37:54even, like if they weren't as good as they've been recently,
- 1:37:57even a chiefs fan, like you'd have to be worried.
- 1:38:00Hell, the the Saint Louis Rams, now the Los Angeles Rams, like
- 1:38:04and now they're really good. And it's like, I don't, they
- 1:38:08don't like everything. Like it's, it's a, it's a scary
- 1:38:11thing because there's so much, there's so many good, like non
- 1:38:16financial things that come from having a team that is so tired
- 1:38:19of the identity of your city. And when that team moves like a
- 1:38:26it's, it's kind of heartbreaking.
- 1:38:28Every team that's every team has moved to Vegas.
- 1:38:31Oh my God, the. I was going to say the Raiders
- 1:38:36going from LA or I think they were in Oakland and then down to
- 1:38:40LA, then back to Oakland and then out to Las Vegas now.
- 1:38:44I didn't realize they were in LA at at one point.
- 1:38:46I know that. I thought for, I thought it was
- 1:38:48just Los Angeles didn't really have a football team and for
- 1:38:53whatever reason, they wanted to be Raiders fans before they
- 1:38:55wanted to be Chargers fans and they.
- 1:38:57Had they had the Raiders for a little while?
- 1:39:00I don't remember how long they were there.
- 1:39:03My brother was a big Raiders fan for some reason and still is I'm
- 1:39:07sure. I I know a Browns fan.
- 1:39:12Wow. Yeah, that's a rare bird.
- 1:39:17Like the state of Ohio? And then that's about it.
- 1:39:20I mean, I, I like, I like Ohio. I love Ohio not to talk music on
- 1:39:27the on the on the Warhammer podcast.
- 1:39:31Carly Cosgrove's longest set to date was a 19 song set in
- 1:39:35Cleveland, OH. 19 songs. That's a that is a.
- 1:39:40Did you break that up at all or you guys just played?
- 1:39:42Through well we we it was just we did A2 song encore that we
- 1:39:47didn't think we were going to get it yeah and also a lot of
- 1:39:50the songs the new record are like a little shorter so we can.
- 1:39:53Yeah, that's fair. Yeah.
- 1:39:55Anyway, not to not to derail too much, I don't want to take up
- 1:39:58too much of your time if you got to get going for anything but.
- 1:40:02I, well, I'm right now I'm thinking like, how do I cut this
- 1:40:04into an episode of a, of a podcast?
- 1:40:07And I think the answer is maybe I cut it into two episodes of a
- 1:40:10podcast. Maybe I just have a a bonus
- 1:40:13episode of of the deep dive into the lore.
- 1:40:17You can. You can actually.
- 1:40:18You went through and cut all of my elongated pauses because I'm
- 1:40:23too afraid to use a filler word. You could probably get it down
- 1:40:25to like an hour. Maybe I should be more afraid of
- 1:40:29using filler words. I use a lot and I've found that
- 1:40:32editing. But yeah, I, I really appreciate
- 1:40:40you coming on. I appreciate you reaching out.
- 1:40:43What, what, what can we plug for Carly Cosgrove?
- 1:40:47I know that you guys have a tour coming up that I'm very excited
- 1:40:50about. Yeah, we're we're going on a a
- 1:40:54North America tour with with free thrown microwave as well as
- 1:40:58Flycatcher Kerosene Heights puddle splasher.
- 1:41:00It's going to be a lot of fun this fall.
- 1:41:02I'm very mad that Kerosene Heights is not making it to
- 1:41:04North Carolina, where they're from.
- 1:41:06But I mean, I'm sure they'll, I'm sure they'll play a gig
- 1:41:09there. I can't imagine they wouldn't.
- 1:41:11They they do. Yeah, enough.
- 1:41:13I've seen them twice this year. Three times this year.
- 1:41:17Very. Excited to be going to like the
- 1:41:20the cities in Canada that most tourists don't get to go to for
- 1:41:23the first time. Like we're going to the
- 1:41:27provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta and Manitoba.
- 1:41:29I don't know if we're playing all those provinces, but I know
- 1:41:32we're playing Winnipeg. That's the that's the name
- 1:41:34that's in Calgary. I think that's really cool.
- 1:41:37Yeah. I've never been to these places
- 1:41:39before, so very excited for that.
- 1:41:41What I, I, you, I, you mentioned this early on and I'm going to
- 1:41:45throw it back to you talking about having to like work your
- 1:41:48way up to leaving. And I think that that's a really
- 1:41:51interesting, like leaving your house.
- 1:41:54And I think that's a really interesting, like a
- 1:41:55juxtaposition of someone who goes out on these long tours and
- 1:41:59gets to travel the world and like, what a cool way to get out
- 1:42:06of your comfort zone, maybe a little bit and, and go to all
- 1:42:09these really cool places and, and meet a ton of new people
- 1:42:13every night. Definitely, yeah.
- 1:42:17I mean, like, honestly, I, I feel my, I feel my mental health
- 1:42:21and my physical health improve when I'm on tour, which is a
- 1:42:24strange thing to say. But like, I, I, I mean, I take
- 1:42:28better care of myself because I have to, Like, if I don't drink
- 1:42:31water, I'm not going to be able to sing.
- 1:42:32My voice is going to give out. I'm like I, I, I, I abstain
- 1:42:37entirely from alcohol on tour and in preparation for tour
- 1:42:40because I, I want to, I want to make sure that I really give the
- 1:42:47best show I can. And sometimes I can't.
- 1:42:49And that doesn't mean I'm not trying.
- 1:42:53I mean, I think it's pretty widely held among people who are
- 1:42:58emo fans that Carly Cosgrove puts on a hell of a show.
- 1:43:02I appreciate, thank you very much.
- 1:43:04I would. I would imagine your worst
- 1:43:05nights are probably still the best nights for the people in
- 1:43:09attendance. I I mean, like not to get not to
- 1:43:15get in too much of the psychology of the show, but
- 1:43:17like, I think part of why I love performing in Carly particularly
- 1:43:21is because it is very much without a net thing.
- 1:43:24But the downside of that is like it's very much like 1.
- 1:43:28You know, one weird thing can kind of put you in a weird
- 1:43:31headspace for the rest of the gig.
- 1:43:33Like especially technical difficulties because they're a
- 1:43:36bit beyond your control if you have to.
- 1:43:38And you know, there are parts of our set where I'm we're we're
- 1:43:42live looping. We don't play to a click.
- 1:43:46So like I will record a guitar part into a looper pedal for
- 1:43:49like a chunk of song and then we will just have to lock into that
- 1:43:53and be at the mercy of the loop for like 30 seconds with that.
- 1:43:58And if I fuck that up, then we then we have a decision to make.
- 1:44:04We're just like, do we just like not have a guitar part just
- 1:44:07disappear during the set or do we just roll with it and do our
- 1:44:12like? It's a like, but that's, I think
- 1:44:14that's part of the charm of the show.
- 1:44:15Is it? I like that it's without a net.
- 1:44:18That is really cool, thank you for sharing that.
- 1:44:21I'm not on this Warhammer podcast.
- 1:44:26I could bring it back to Warhammer.
- 1:44:27There's a there's a a kind of a novelty orc unit called the Goth
- 1:44:31Rockers. The goth rockers.
- 1:44:33Yeah, I don't think it's you can actually field and play, but
- 1:44:36it's just like a fun model. It's a sculpt of an orc that's
- 1:44:38just like singing into, oh, fuck.
- 1:44:42Singing into like a microphone with like a top hat looking like
- 1:44:44slash. It's like they they have a sense
- 1:44:49of humor over there. Yeah.
- 1:44:52I like when some when there's something that can take itself
- 1:44:57for what it is and and just not be super serious.
- 1:45:00Yeah, it's plastic army men. People get into the more toxic
- 1:45:04parts of the 40K community, as I understand it, get into really
- 1:45:08annoying arguments online about what the universe would allow
- 1:45:12and what it wouldn't allow. It's like, listen, like every,
- 1:45:16like all of us here probably would be, you know, living in,
- 1:45:25like living in squalor. That would make squalor on Earth
- 1:45:29right now seem like luxury. If we were like in the 40K
- 1:45:33universe, we would not see this high.
- 1:45:36High cities are really cool. High cities are a part of
- 1:45:38imperial life where it's just like, imagine, just like
- 1:45:42building on top of, like building on top of building on
- 1:45:45top of building. Yeah.
- 1:45:47And there are people who live at the very bottom of the high city
- 1:45:50who just have like, will live their whole lives and never see
- 1:45:52the song. Like you could like.
- 1:45:54That's kind of like, I don't know if you've ever read or seen
- 1:45:58the movie Ready Player 1. Ohio is the the, the, the
- 1:46:05central location of of the world essentially in in this in this
- 1:46:09place. And they live in the stacks,
- 1:46:11which are essentially stacked up motorhomes or or RV's that are
- 1:46:19just stacked up to the sky. Well.
- 1:46:23That is, that is, that is pretty cool. 40K also has its own
- 1:46:27Soylent green. It is called corpse starch.
- 1:46:34How bad is your life? It to suck if like you are
- 1:46:36eating the deceased remains of your loved ones as a source of
- 1:46:40nutrition as corpse? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:46:46The the world building is really interesting.
- 1:46:47Also this, I didn't touch on it, but in the Imperium of Man,
- 1:46:50there's a really cool Gothic team they have going on.
- 1:46:52A lot of their weapons are like very how like very prominent,
- 1:46:58like Gothic architecture, inspiration and a lot of
- 1:47:00religious imagery. You can drop churches on people
- 1:47:03as like as like a weapon. There is a in the Sisters of
- 1:47:07Battle, there is a pipe organ church that you can field.
- 1:47:10It is like a giant tank. Sorry, a giant pipe organ tank.
- 1:47:15How how big are these pieces that people are painting and
- 1:47:19like, are they like massive like you size of your size of your
- 1:47:22thumb? So if this grot is the smallest
- 1:47:25thing you can probably paint or one of the smaller things you
- 1:47:28can paint, There are how I think of, I actually haven't seen them
- 1:47:36in person, but there are these there are these things called
- 1:47:39Titans, which are like probably like this tall with the idea of
- 1:47:45like these are giant mobile mechanized churches that will
- 1:47:49stomp on infantry and shoot large giant missiles at other,
- 1:47:56you know, swaths of enemies. Yeah, a a lot of the scale of
- 1:48:0140K is very, very grand. Even like every every vehicle
- 1:48:07for the most part is like blown to the just insane and heinous
- 1:48:10proportions to the characters like to the to the inventory
- 1:48:13models. A lot of the tanks in the
- 1:48:16Imperial Guard are kind of model after like real life World War 2
- 1:48:21style tanks and but the only difference is their scale is so
- 1:48:25much. Larger, yeah, I that's I can see
- 1:48:27what you're saying. Yeah.
- 1:48:28Oh, you just reminded me of like another funny name thing.
- 1:48:34So, you know, I was talking about earlier how tech with
- 1:48:36technology you don't like, you don't invent new technology so
- 1:48:40much as you find it. A lot of times when people find
- 1:48:44this old technology, they will name it after an important
- 1:48:47person or maybe the person who finds it or something.
- 1:48:50There is a tank called the Lehman Russ in the game that is
- 1:48:54named after the Primark Lehman Russ.
- 1:48:57There is a tank called the Rogel Doran in the game that is named
- 1:49:00after the Primark Rogel Doran. And then there's a tank called
- 1:49:02the Land Raider and it is named after Arcan Land.
- 1:49:12All the names you've told me are, they're gold.
- 1:49:14Here, let's see. Oh, oh, mortarian kind of self
- 1:49:21kind of self-explanatory. That's the the demon Primark of
- 1:49:25the Death Guard, which is like the Nergal Space Marine faction.
- 1:49:32There's a lot of I feel like there's funny orc ones but
- 1:49:34they're not as explanatory as to what they are.
- 1:49:37Orcs have a lot. Orcs have fun names.
- 1:49:38My favorite orc character is Wazdaka Gutsmech.
- 1:49:43Wazdaka Gutsmech. Yes he is.
- 1:49:49He just got a model for the first time ever which I'm very
- 1:49:52excited. That's cool, but I don't like
- 1:49:54the sculptor very much. He is a an orc mech mechanic who
- 1:50:01rides around in an incredibly fast motorcycle and that's his
- 1:50:05whole thing. It's just need for speed.
- 1:50:08Something that amazes me and that I have like this, I think
- 1:50:14maybe this conversation more than any other conversation I've
- 1:50:18had on on this show so far has been really illustrative of is
- 1:50:23there are these fandoms that exist in the world that I've
- 1:50:27never heard of and other people just have no idea exists and
- 1:50:31they just go so deep. It's crazy.
- 1:50:35And I, I think that's fantastic. Thank.
- 1:50:38I mean, thank you. I think about that sometimes
- 1:50:43with like with like certain bands, like 21 Pilots, like
- 1:50:50there's just this like lore to that band that I've never heard
- 1:50:53of. But I know that there are people
- 1:50:55that are like super deep into it and I don't know.
- 1:50:58I think that's really cool. I just got to see My Chemical
- 1:51:01Romance last week with my partner I saw.
- 1:51:04That on Instagram you you have. Some stuff on their shows are
- 1:51:07that their shows are lore, like you can be a nerd about My
- 1:51:11Chemical Romance and understanding like they're that
- 1:51:13is that is a that is a thing you can be a nerd about.
- 1:51:17You could be a nerd about Kendrick Lamar.
- 1:51:19You could be a nerd about Nas. You could be a nerd about like
- 1:51:23you could be a nerd about I'm trying to think of like like a
- 1:51:26classic rock band that has probably a lot of lore.
- 1:51:29The Beatles. You could be a big nerd about
- 1:51:30The Beatles, but some of The Beatles biggest fans are not
- 1:51:35nerds about The Beatles. You.
- 1:51:37Can still love it without getting into the fandom.
- 1:51:40Or or just not bothering to try to understand it better.
- 1:51:43Like I suspect that Liam Gallagher, frontman of Oasis, is
- 1:51:49not a nerd about The Beatles, even though he loves John
- 1:51:52Lennon. And I think he would love John
- 1:51:54Lennon less if he bothered to learn more about John Lennon.
- 1:52:00I really appreciate you coming on.
- 1:52:01I appreciate you sharing this passion with me and and the rest
- 1:52:04of the audience. Who gets to listen to you to
- 1:52:06you. Tell us the lore.
- 1:52:10Excited for the tour. Is there more Carly Cosgrove
- 1:52:13music coming in the future? I am not at liberty to disclose.
- 1:52:18OK, fair enough. We will leave it at that.
- 1:52:21Do with that information what keep your secrets then Yeah.
- 1:52:25God damn it, there's a fucking character in Warhammer called
- 1:52:28the Keeper of Secrets. Every time we talk in the future
- 1:52:35and I and honestly, I kind of hope that we we get some more
- 1:52:39opportunity to, to have some more of these conversations.
- 1:52:42I hope that every time we do, you bring up more and more
- 1:52:45Warhammer. Characters.
- 1:52:46That'll be my running gag. That'll be my running gag.
- 1:52:48You're like, oh, did you know there's a character named
- 1:52:52Kamasar Yarik that has nothing to do with anything?
- 1:52:57Well, thank you again. Appreciate it.
- 1:53:00Everybody go see Carly Cosgrove on tour with free throw and
