- 0:09On October 1st, grocery money for millions of households gets recalculated.
- 0:14For some families, the benefit is going to go up and the check goes down in the very same month.
- 0:18So we'll show you exactly which side you land on.
- 0:21Ground beef just hit almost $7 a pound.
- 0:23So we'll tell you the one category actually worth fighting.
- 0:27Medicare's most important Six weeks of the year are about to open.
- 0:31Then we're also going to cover scam of the week.
- 0:34You pay for a car, drive over to get it, and the dealership has actually never heard of you.
- 0:39How does that work?
- 0:40And what's the one habit that you can do to stop it?
- 0:43Plus, we're going to get into a section called what It Cost Me.
- 0:47And it's when we dive deep into Ralph's own story.
- 0:50Stick around.
- 0:51At least one of these things impact you right now.
- 1:02Welcome to becoming financially confident.
- 1:04Breaking free from money Shame.
- 1:06One conversation at a time.
- 1:07We're live every Monday through Friday from 11:30am to 12:30pm Eastern.
- 1:12And hello, I'm Ralph Estep Jr I'm a licensed public accountant with 30 years of experience.
- 1:17And I'm Juliet.
- 1:18I'm just a regular person asking Ralph all the questions because you might have them, too.
- 1:23Yeah, we're two very different people having conversations about the things that affect our money and your money.
- 1:28I just want to remind everybody we got a house rule here.
- 1:30No shaming anybody about money.
- 1:32And nobody's going to be judged for what they didn't know yesterday.
- 1:35Today's a brand new day, and our goal is to help you get a little bit farther ahead today.
- 1:40This is a live show and we want everybody to be able to participate.
- 1:43If you have a question that you want us to have a conversation about, send it to us@becomingfinanciallyconfident.com, no question, is off limits.
- 1:52Yeah.
- 1:52And wherever you're on your financial journey, understand you're not alone in that.
- 1:55And as we're going to talk about today, on what it costs me, you're going to find that even the accountant who's been doing this for a long time doesn't always make the best decisions.
- 2:08Let's get into the first headline.
- 2:09We're talking about SNAP benefits in 29 days.
- 2:12That's October 1st.
- 2:13The grocery money for millions of household gets recalculated.
- 2:17And for some families, the benefit goes down in the same month the headline number goes up.
- 2:22So, Ralph, how can that be true at the same time?
- 2:25Yeah, this is one of those things that affects people that are on government assistance, what we're talking about here is snap benefits.
- 2:30When I saw this come through, I say we probably should mention this.
- 2:33I don't know how many of our audience are affected by this, but it's a big deal.
- 2:36So what actually is changing on October 1st, the family of four, maximum amount of benefits is going to rise to $1,023, which, that sounds good because you're going to actually qualify for more benef.
- 2:49But here's the thing that a lot of people aren't talking about.
- 2:52They're also widening a work rule.
- 2:54And what this basically means is that they are now requiring up to age 64 you have to work.
- 3:02Now what they're basically saying here is, and this is a new thing on the clock, what it means is you have to have 80 hours a month.
- 3:09It also affects, we've talked about this the last couple days, the lihepay, that's utility deduction and how households benefit.
- 3:17So this is a big deal.
- 3:18You gotta understand the change here because this, this is one of those things you might not know a whole lot about, but if it affects you, it's going to affect you, especially the work requirement.
- 3:27Oh, so that's like the biggest change is like if something happens, changes for your work requirements, then you have to pay attention to this, right?
- 3:35Yeah.
- 3:36So in the past, the way I understand it, and I am not an expert on this, I'm going to be very clear about this.
- 3:40My understanding was the work requirement used to be up to age 54.
- 3:46And what they've done is they've now made that up to age 64.
- 3:50And you have to work at least 80 hours a month.
- 3:53And there's a benefit cap of three months.
- 3:55So this is the hard part to this one.
- 3:57So if you're affected by this, understand that this is a change and this change is going to require you to make some changes on the way you look at things.
- 4:05Especially if you went, if you, before you were in that age gap where you didn't have that requirement, now all of a sudden you do have that requirement.
- 4:12Yeah, pay attention to that.
- 4:18Before we get into the next headline, though, I just want to shout out Duchess for saying good morning to us in the chat.
- 4:22Good morning to you guys, too.
- 4:25Okay, where are we now?
- 4:27So right now we're going to talk about ground beef.
- 4:29Ground beef just hit $6.89 a pound.
- 4:33That's not a story about inflation.
- 4:34That's a story about what you're going to have for Tuesday night dinner.
- 4:38Ralph, the government says Groceries are up only about 2.5%.
- 4:42So what's happening?
- 4:43How do you read this?
- 4:44Yeah, so I know a little bit about this because I actually raise Black Angus beef here on my farm, and I have a farmhand who helps.
- 4:51And we were having a convers the other day.
- 4:54And what's going on right now with ground beef is we are at the lowest herd level.
- 4:58H E R D meaning that the herds have shrunk to such an amount where there is a scarcity of beef right now.
- 5:06And with anything in the economy, if there's a scarcity of something, what happens?
- 5:11The price goes up.
- 5:12So Right now, in 2026 alone, you're seeing anywhere from 9.4 to 16.6% increase in beef.
- 5:21And that's part of this issue.
- 5:22Now, my farmhand was explaining to me there's some ideas of how to get more meat to market.
- 5:27There's a whole lot of things that are going on, but this is one of those things where it's not going to correct itself overnight.
- 5:32If you're thinking, oh, in a couple weeks, beef is going to be back up to where it is, it doesn't work that way.
- 5:38A herd takes years to rebuild.
- 5:41And so what happened was the herd started to deplete.
- 5:44I don't know exactly why that happened, but this is one of those things where it's not like, hey, this week beef is high.
- 5:49Next week I can go back to beef again.
- 5:51I think this is one of those things that's going to take some time to recover.
- 5:56So buckle up.
- 5:57And we talked a little bit about this yesterday.
- 5:58This is one of those areas where think about some practical swaps.
- 6:02If beef is costing more, maybe you go to pork, maybe you go to, you know, chicken.
- 6:07You know, plan your dinners ahead of time so that by the time you get to the store, you're not struggling around to figure out what happens.
- 6:14I don't know about you, Juliet, but that's been a big struggle for me my entire life.
- 6:17Don't ever go to the store hungry because you'll buy more than you need.
- 6:20That's very, very true.
- 6:21And the practical swaps, I mean, I will say, like, when I hear this headline, I'm thinking about, well, it kind of makes sense to me that the beef herd is going down because it's harder to raise animals in
- 6:33this climate.
- 6:34It's like this environmental change.
- 6:35There's so many changes happening.
- 6:36Right.
- 6:36So, I mean, down the line of that, like reasoning, practical swaps are super, super helpful to know.
- 6:43So you could still get all the proteins and the calories and all of that that you need without spending a fortun.
- 6:49And that's something we probably should talk about.
- 6:51You know, I've been on a very interesting health journey, and like, I never really thought about it before.
- 6:55It was always, you know, I was trained in, well, count your calories, Ralph.
- 6:57I joined weight Watchers.
- 6:59They ran me out of there.
- 7:00I tried nutrisystem.
- 7:01I tried Jenny Craig.
- 7:02I've tried them all.
- 7:03And finally, what finally worked for me, and I'm almost down £200 at this point.
- 7:06What worked for me is really paying attention to what went into the body.
- 7:10And part of that is making sure I get enough protein, making sure I get enough of the nutrients that I need.
- 7:15I know Dutches and John just launched a new show about this very issue.
- 7:21So this is one of those things where don't just cut corners and say, well, I'm just gonna cut the proteins out.
- 7:26You gotta think about other proteins.
- 7:27Beef, you know, not beef, but, you know, beans and other types of.
- 7:32I'm not a big vegetarian type person, but I know there are some out there that you can get into.
- 7:37But this is one of those things that I thought we should talk about because this is a big deal.
- 7:41Yeah, yeah.
- 7:42And I said a question.
- 7:43Let me.
- 7:44Let me pop this on here to the screen.
- 7:45But won't the cost of swap start increasing as well?
- 7:48Sure, absolutely.
- 7:49I think that's true.
- 7:50I think you're going to see that.
- 7:52And thank you for bringing.
- 7:53Bringing that to our attention, Duchess.
- 7:54You're right.
- 7:54I think that's exactly what's going to happen.
- 7:56So I think in general, you just have to margin this.
- 7:59This is going.
- 8:00Groceries cost more.
- 8:01Yeah, yeah.
- 8:02And I will say, maybe, Ralph, in the future, I can introduce some vegetarian dishes or restaurants as you travel that you can try out.
- 8:09Uh.
- 8:09Oh, you're.
- 8:10You're going to try to make me a vegetarian?
- 8:11Is that where we're going here?
- 8:13No, no, no.
- 8:13This is not about making you turn into a vegetarian.
- 8:16It's about expanding your palate and see what's out there.
- 8:19So I'm going to tell a story here.
- 8:20So we.
- 8:20I mentioned that Juliet and I were in Charlotte together for a confere, and we went to dinner with a bunch of colleagues, and it was not the kind of restaurant that I would normally go to.
- 8:30And I said to Juliet, I said, okay, what is this?
- 8:32Like I've said on the show before, I'm a meat and potatoes kind of fellow.
- 8:35And she's like, well, you should try this.
- 8:37And Try this.
- 8:38And we're talking about different sauces and all that sort of thing, so I'll take you up on that.
- 8:42I think that's a great idea to figure out something besides the normal stuff.
- 8:46So I'd definitely take it.
- 8:47Maybe we could talk about that on the show at one point.
- 8:53If you or your parents are on Medicare, the single most expensive 15 minutes of your year is coming in about six weeks, and most people skip it entirely.
- 9:02Ralph, what is this about?
- 9:04So what we're talking about here is called open enrollment.
- 9:08So buckle up.
- 9:09You're fixing to see all those commercials that I don't know about you, but they frustrate me, you know, with the, the elderly folks who are saying, you know, don't forget about your, your enrollment for Medicare.
- 9:19So what happens with this?
- 9:21And I have a little bit of experience with this.
- 9:22Some of my clients have gone through this.
- 9:23My own mother went through this.
- 9:25But what they're going to be doing is they're changing the premium.
- 9:28So we talked about, I think in one of our pre shows, we talked about Social Security and how they figure out what the percentage of is Social Security.
- 9:35Well, they do the exact same thing with Medicare premiums.
- 9:38And what happens.
- 9:39And a lot of people overlook this because most people who have Medicare are on Social Security.
- 9:46And what happens is that Medicare premium comes right out of their Social Security benefits.
- 9:51So this is one of those things where they don't see it.
- 9:54So one of the things that I recommend here is if you do nothing, you're just going to accept what they give you.
- 10:00There are other plans out there.
- 10:02There are things you could do.
- 10:02Again, I am not a Medicare insurance expert, but just understand there is a window, and that window is you have to do it within that timeframe.
- 10:12If you miss that window, then you're going to be paying whatever they want to charge you, to be blunt.
- 10:18Yeah.
- 10:18And we don't want that to happen.
- 10:20So that is the open enrollment October 15th to December 7th.
- 10:24Yeah.
- 10:25And what we're talking about here is this what what they're suggesting is going to be.
- 10:29So right now, and this is a tiered thing to pay based on your income.
- 10:32But the bottom tier right now, Medicare costs the average person $202.90 per month.
- 10:41And what they're proposing here, what most people have said to projected is going to be 209.50amonth.
- 10:46So you might be thinking, well, we're going to get a cost of living increase for our Social Security, but they're going to take that back.
- 10:52They're going to call that back with Medicare.
- 10:54And there are some private forecasts that said this number could actually go up to 216 to $219 a month, which, you know, they give you 3% cost of living adjustment.
- 11:05And then they kind of hit you with a hammer on the backside to go and say, okay, well, we're not going to do it this way.
- 11:12I feel like that's always what's happening.
- 11:14So, you know, be aware of that.
- 11:16Know your dates.
- 11:17Open enrollment starts October 15th.
- 11:19If you need.
- 11:19If you have Medicare, pay attention to what the plans are, figure out what your options, what you need, and then you can make an informed decision.
- 11:29Absolutely.
- 11:29And we're going to get to our scam of the week in a moment.
- 11:31But first, I want to talk about something that most of us don't even think about a lot of times, because so many things are electronic now.
- 11:39We don't pay our bills, you know, by sending a check anymore.
- 11:42So a lot of us have to go find that stamp.
- 11:44I just had this conversation with my wife the other day.
- 11:46I said, do you have a stamp?
- 11:47I need to mail something.
- 11:48I was over at the house, and she says, oh, I just get them from the grocery store.
- 11:51But if you're like most people, you only mail things a couple times a year.
- 11:54And that's why we've partnered with a company called stamps.com with stamps.com and we have an affiliate relationship with them.
- 12:01You can sign up for their service and you can actually print the postage right from your own home with your own printer.
- 12:07If you're interested in finding out more information, you can go to becoming financiallyconfident.com stamps again.
- 12:14That's becoming financially confident.com stamps.
- 12:18That is an affiliate link, which basically means we earn a commission, but it doesn't cost you anything else.
- 12:24So that's one of the things that I think is a great idea.
- 12:34All right, right now, we're going to talk about car dealership scams.
- 12:38So you negotiate online, you send the deposit, and then you drive over to pick up your car, and the dealership has no idea who you are.
- 12:45This is one of the newer FTC alert alerts on scams.
- 12:49And so before we get Ralph's take on this, I think the first section of that first sentence gave me pause.
- 12:57Like, negotiating online.
- 12:58That's like the biggest red flag to me.
- 13:00But, Ralph, what do you want?
- 13:02You know what, Julia?
- 13:03But it's not that big of a red flag, because when Covid came around, it was very common for car dealerships to not at least where I'm at in Delaware.
- 13:12A lot of car dealerships were all remote.
- 13:15And the way it worked is you went to their website, you looked at what you wanted to buy, they did all the paperwork online.
- 13:20So during COVID they really opened up this to this online buying of cars.
- 13:25And I remember I bought a Corvette a few years ago and I did it at a dealership that was in another state.
- 13:31And so I actually did this myself.
- 13:33So it's not as uncommon as you would think.
- 13:37So wait, wait, wait.
- 13:38Ralph, did you buy that Corvette online and you didn't test drive it at all?
- 13:43I did not.
- 13:44Absolutely not.
- 13:45No.
- 13:45I just.
- 13:45Look, here's the deal.
- 13:47So I'm gonna make a funny story, right?
- 13:49So it's funny if you look around, who actually can afford Corvettes?
- 13:52It's like middle aged guys wearing New Balance sneakers.
- 13:55So I was that middle aged guy wearing the New Balance sneakers.
- 13:59And the car looked cool.
- 14:00It was a bright red.
- 14:00I actually got a picture on my shelf, second shelf back there.
- 14:03You see the Corvette.
- 14:04It was a really cool car.
- 14:05But here's the problem.
- 14:06I get to the car dealership.
- 14:07We're gonna take a.
- 14:08This can be a Ralph rant for a second.
- 14:09It's okay.
- 14:10This.
- 14:10So I get to the car dealership, like you said, I hadn't driven the thing.
- 14:12So I roll up to the car dealership.
- 14:14It's in like middle Pennsylvania.
- 14:15So it was like a two hour drive.
- 14:17My wife and I went up.
- 14:18She, she.
- 14:19She says, look, this is on you.
- 14:20She dropped me off and she's back, going back to Delaware.
- 14:22We had a little lunch.
- 14:23So I go into the car dealers.
- 14:25I'm the clown who's here to pick up the red Corvette because you gotta have red, right?
- 14:29So I go in there.
- 14:30He goes, well, do you want to look at the car?
- 14:31I'm like, yeah, that sounds like a good idea.
- 14:33So this is no lie, Juliet.
- 14:34I go outside and I sit and I'm like, okay.
- 14:37So I figure out finally how to open the door.
- 14:39Because it had like these crazy doors that kind of.
- 14:41They weren't butterfly doors, but they open up wide.
- 14:43And I'm thinking, now at the time, I'm 200 pounds heavier.
- 14:46So like fat man in a little car.
- 14:48And I'm thinking, how do I get in this car?
- 14:50And the guy goes, okay, he says, I'm going to show you how to do this.
- 14:54He says, you got to watch these YouTube videos about how old men.
- 14:57And I'm not that old, but how old men get into Corvettes.
- 15:00So anyway, to answer your question, so I.
- 15:02So what you do is you.
- 15:03You open up the door and you kind of back into it, and then you sit down and then you swing your legs around.
- 15:08But anyway, so but I get in this car and I'm like, well, once I got in, it was fine.
- 15:13I mean, it was very comfortable.
- 15:14It felt, you know, sleek and all that kind of stuff.
- 15:16But getting to that point, oh my gosh, what was I thinking?
- 15:20I didn't keep the car long, Juliet, because rolling in and out of it by going on the ground first is not comfortable for a 50 plus year old man.
- 15:28Got it.
- 15:29So anyway, but getting back to the point.
- 15:31The point here is that it's not uncommon for people to now be doing these type of deals online.
- 15:37It's just not.
- 15:38But you weren't.
- 15:39You weren't.
- 15:39I'm gonna shout out Duchess because Dutchess says 100% facts on the New Balance sneaker.
- 15:44So, you know, perfect target market right there.
- 15:48Yeah, but they're super comfortable Dutches.
- 15:49That's the thing people don't understand.
- 15:51I mean, I might have.
- 15:52I want to put my foot up on the camera, but I think I got a pair on right now.
- 15:54Like, these are very comfortable sneakers.
- 15:57I also have a pair of New Balance sneakers, but I am also Asian, so I don't wear shoes in the house.
- 16:03That's crazy to me, right?
- 16:04Oh, that's a whole nother discussion point.
- 16:07Yeah.
- 16:08Oh, Duchess also asked how was getting out of the vet?
- 16:12Yeah.
- 16:12So that was an equal chore.
- 16:14So getting in and out was the challenge.
- 16:16You know, once you're in there, it's like, okay, another story.
- 16:19Here we go.
- 16:20So this car was fast.
- 16:22I'm talking about super fast.
- 16:24So, like, once I got in there, I was like, boom.
- 16:26I was down the route, going, but getting out of it again, you roll in and you roll out.
- 16:29It's kind of like you remember when you were a kid and he used to say, if you're ever in a fire, roll, Dick, roll.
- 16:34That was like the thing Dick Van Dyke did.
- 16:35These guys.
- 16:36I'm totally dating myself at this point, but he would say to you, if you're on fire, the thing you do is you drop to your.
- 16:41To the ground and you roll to roll the fire.
- 16:44Well, getting it out of a Corvette was the exact same scenario.
- 16:48We have taken this off the rails at this point.
- 16:51But anyway, I wanted to ask you, Ralph, like, were you never worried that, like, the car dealership was scamming you because you hadn't seen the Car first.
- 17:00Because I assume like that's kind of the mechanism that these scams are working too.
- 17:04Well.
- 17:04Yeah.
- 17:04I'm gonna go back to something that you didn't mention, but I think you were alluding to.
- 17:08And that is the word.
- 17:09You send the deposit.
- 17:10That's the big difference here.
- 17:12So I didn't send a deposit.
- 17:14I said to them, hey, I'm interested.
- 17:16And in fact, I think what I had to do because it was kind of one of those cards didn't have many of.
- 17:19I think I had to give them a credit card over the phone.
- 17:22So I wasn't too worried about that because with a credit card you've got a ton of protections.
- 17:29So I wasn't too worried about doing it.
- 17:31But in this particular scam, people are actually sending like Venmo and they're sending cash app.
- 17:38So going back to what you said.
- 17:39Yeah, it should raise the red flag if you're sending Venmo or cash app to buy a car.
- 17:44We got a problem here.
- 17:46All right.
- 17:47So I think what I'm learning is it is more common to shop for cars online.
- 17:53But be really careful, like if you're spending or like sending money over before you see the car.
- 17:59Yeah, I think you need to pay attention, check the dealer, make sure they're a legitimate dealer, all that sort of thing.
- 18:04Because it's super easy.
- 18:05I want to get into the mechanics a little bit.
- 18:07We talked about this.
- 18:08I think it was yesterday or the day before days run together because we do this and we have so much fun doing this.
- 18:12But AI, literally you can go out to your Claude, your Claude, AI, and you can say, go build me a website.
- 18:19And you can say, go to this website.
- 18:21I want it to look exactly like that and it will do it.
- 18:25And that's what's going on here.
- 18:26So you need to make sure you're at the actual website because they can spoof a phone, they can spoof an email, they put fake testimonials.
- 18:35And here's the thing, they lure a lot of people.
- 18:36And this is interesting because my Corvette story actually matches here a lot of rare muscle cars and hard to find classics, which you're not going to find those at the standard dealerships.
- 18:47So that's where you got to really pay attention and make sure.
- 18:50And that's one of those things where you probably don't want to do that type of deal unless you are aware of this person.
- 18:56Look at their references, make sure they're legit, because that's a big deal and you can get yourself in A whole lot of trouble quickly.
- 19:04Yeah.
- 19:05Are there any other tips that you have for people who could potentially find themselves in a car dealer?
- 19:12Yeah, absolutely.
- 19:13Number one thing, don't wire money.
- 19:15Don't wire money.
- 19:16Don't cash app them money or venmo or any PayPal or anything like that.
- 19:20If they say to you, hey, you got to pay your deposit with gift cards.
- 19:24Yeah, no, not a good.
- 19:26We said that yesterday.
- 19:27Gift cards.
- 19:27No, no, no, no.
- 19:28Yeah.
- 19:28There are some car dealers now that are taking crypto.
- 19:30So I'm going to back off that a little bit because some of the car dealers are around here are actually taking crypto now.
- 19:36So that's something that.
- 19:37Yeah, again, but here's the big kill switch is call and verify the VIN number of the vehicle.
- 19:44And what you can do is you can ask them to give you the VIN number, and then you can go on to one of these websites where you can verify the VIN number and make sure that that VIN
- 19:55number actually exists.
- 19:57So this is a tough one.
- 19:59You know, the thing is a funny thing.
- 20:01Like, I used to work in bank security.
- 20:03I was the president of the Delaware association for Bank Security.
- 20:05We used to talk about banks getting robbed all the time.
- 20:07People don't do that anymore because it's easier to just rob you by scamming you.
- 20:11It's easier to rob you by sending out spoof emails and all that sort of thing.
- 20:16So just pay attention.
- 20:19And, you know, it's one of those things.
- 20:19If it doesn't.
- 20:20If it seems too good to be true, it probably is too good to be true.
- 20:24And you gotta really watch that.
- 20:26There's something that you mentioned there that I did not know.
- 20:29I didn't know.
- 20:30You can check a VIN number.
- 20:32Absolutely.
- 20:32Yeah.
- 20:33I think it's carfax.
- 20:34There's a bunch of different ones.
- 20:35You can actually go in even Kelley Blue Book, you can just put a VIN number in there and it'll tell you, like, does this car match the kind of car you think it is?
- 20:43So that's definitely a good thing to do.
- 20:45Oh, by the way, if anybody doesn't know what VIN number, it's a acronym.
- 20:48VIN stands for Vehicle Identification Number.
- 20:51If I'm correct, a bunch it's letters and numbers.
- 20:54So the VIN number, now you have to be careful of that, too, because some dealers might not want to give you the VIN number because you could use that to, like, make fake, potentially.
- 21:04I mean, there are other issues.
- 21:06It's kind of like a Social Security number, but not quite that secure.
- 21:09But what I always tell People have em send you the window sticker because the window sticker will actually have the VIN number on it.
- 21:15It'll have, you know, all those type of details.
- 21:17Look, when you're buying a car, I think I mentioned this the other day, you're in the driver's seat, literally.
- 21:23So don't be afraid to ask questions, don't be afraid to push back and say, hey, wait a second, what are you doing here?
- 21:29But the problem is a lot of these, and I see a of scams in this is these muscle cars, these people who one offs, like these people, these people who collect muscle cars are pretty cool, but like they
- 21:40will drive for days to find the car that they want.
- 21:43So just be aware.
- 21:44Buyer beware, I guess, in all things.
- 21:46Yeah.
- 21:47One more thing, one more question that popped up.
- 21:49Window sticker.
- 21:50Are you talking about, like, I've only bought Toyotas in my life, the window sticker.
- 21:53You're talking about the literal sticker on the lot where you go up to the car.
- 21:57Yeah, so correct.
- 21:58And, and just so you understand, I bought too many cars.
- 22:01Like I said, Julianne, the dealer has a electronic copy of that as well, so you can ask them to email you that.
- 22:08But basically the window sticker, and I'm not sure if it's a federal regulation, I think it might be, they have to disclose where the car was made, they have to disclose the VIN number, they have to disclose the
- 22:17engine type, the horsepower.
- 22:20I know nothing about cars, obviously, but they have to disclose all of those things and that's what it'll tell you.
- 22:25What, you know, accessories and all that sort of thing on there.
- 22:28So ask for that.
- 22:29I ask for that all the time anyway because I want to see what the dealer.
- 22:32And just so we understand each other, we're taking a deep dive.
- 22:35The sticker doesn't necessarily mean when it says this is what the price is.
- 22:39That doesn't mean that it's actually what the dealer paid for it.
- 22:44That's sort of a suggested retail price.
- 22:46So if you ever have a dealer say, but the sticker says it's, you know, $74,000.
- 22:51Yeah, that sounds good, but that doesn't really mean a whole lot.
- 22:54Yeah, yeah.
- 22:55And I think the last thing that we also talked about.
- 22:57Oh, wait, sorry, somebody in the comment.
- 23:00Annie, I'm curious if Julia has had any experiences with scams and if so, what you learned from it.
- 23:06Oh, my gosh.
- 23:07Oh, Annie, great question.
- 23:10Should we get into it right now?
- 23:11Let's do it.
- 23:12Let's do it.
- 23:12We're talking about Scams is a great time to do it.
- 23:15Bring back the To Cam.
- 23:16I don't want to be like, single shot on this.
- 23:20I have been scammed.
- 23:21I have been scammed or attempted scam twice in my life.
- 23:27One time was in college because I was trying to make quick buck.
- 23:29And I.
- 23:30That was when I realized, like, if you have a college board, that it is possible for people to try to take advantage of college students who are trying to make money.
- 23:38And then I actually got.
- 23:39I want to pause you for one second because you just said a keyword.
- 23:43Yeah.
- 23:43Quick money.
- 23:45Quick money.
- 23:46Yeah.
- 23:46Whenever something is quick, whenever somebody is putting pressure on you to do something right away, first red flag.
- 23:52But continue on Julia.
- 23:53Oh, you know, I actually want to talk about that real quick.
- 23:57It's like anything, I think, okay, I've been scammed twice.
- 24:01I learned my lesson better the second time.
- 24:03But anytime you feel like you're being emotionally hijacked, emotionally manipulated, just back off, right?
- 24:10Because it's like, if you need to buy this.
- 24:12If you really want to buy this car and they're putting pressure on you, hey, maybe they're trying to get something out of it more.
- 24:20Like, they need something more out of it versus you.
- 24:22Right.
- 24:22Like, you can obviously shop around and find another red Corvette.
- 24:27So I think emotional manipulation, hijacking.
- 24:31Pay attention to that.
- 24:32When you're in a situation, who do.
- 24:34You think you're fooling?
- 24:36I've been wanting to play that.
- 24:37That's a good one.
- 24:39And then emotional.
- 24:41Emotional and immediacy are one of the two main red flags, the biggest ones.
- 24:46Like, I think that's a common thread in all of the scams that we talk about on this show.
- 24:50It absolutely is.
- 24:52Yeah.
- 24:52And then the second time I almost got scammed was actually through Facebook Marketplace, because I was trying to sell a bunch of stuff.
- 24:58And it was.
- 24:59It was.
- 24:59I was trying to sell technology.
- 25:01It was have, like, a.
- 25:02A bunch of old.
- 25:04What are they called?
- 25:04Like, routers.
- 25:05And routers.
- 25:07A lot of routers.
- 25:09And what they did at that time was, oh, they wanted to send money.
- 25:15Oh, this is related to Zelle.
- 25:17They wanted to send money through Zelle.
- 25:19And I said, we're not scheduled to meet in, like, two days.
- 25:24I don't want your money right now because I want to see the person to do this, right?
- 25:27And then they go, oops, actually, I just already sent it, so, like, then can you give the money back?
- 25:34And I go, look.
- 25:34And I'm like, I didn't get anything.
- 25:37And then they.
- 25:38Again, emotional manipulation.
- 25:40They're like, oh, my God, this is really bad thing.
- 25:42I'm going to call my bank account right now and there's like a whole problem.
- 25:46You have to ask your bank to, like, return the money.
- 25:49That is not how Zelle works.
- 25:50I think we need to have another conversation about that.
- 25:52That is not how Zelle works.
- 25:53Okay.
- 25:54Zelle does not have a customer support line.
- 25:56Your bank doesn't take any.
- 25:59Take any.
- 26:00What is it, like, accountability, Responsibility for mistakes that happen through Zelle.
- 26:05And so I basically got caught up in this three hour conversation with these scammers.
- 26:11And afterwards I was like, nah, I feel like once I got to calm down, I was like, I feel like you guys are manipulating me right now.
- 26:18And so it' not true.
- 26:21Goodbye.
- 26:22And then all the messages stopped.
- 26:24Everything stopped.
- 26:25Yeah.
- 26:25I think the big thing with this and then we'll move on is that understand that if they're trying to hold you hostage emotionally, that's where it's immediate, it's emotional.
- 26:35And the other thing is, I'm going to be honest with you.
- 26:38I am not a huge fan of any of the cash apps.
- 26:42When I sell stuff on Facebook, Marketplace, show me the green money.
- 26:46That's what I want to see.
- 26:47Because I don't have time for cash apps.
- 26:49I don't have time for this, that, or the other thing.
- 26:51So I think that's a big deal.
- 26:53But thank you for your question.
- 26:55It was Ann correct.
- 26:56Annie, thank you so much for joining us.
- 26:58We appreciate live questions.
- 26:59That's the whole point of why we do what we do.
- 27:01But while we're talking about that, we mentioned this on the show yesterday.
- 27:05I want you to honestly answer something.
- 27:09When's the last time you looked at your credit score?
- 27:11We've talked about credit a lot.
- 27:12We talked about freezing your credit or homework this week.
- 27:14For a lot of people, the answer is it hasn't been for a long time.
- 27:18And I've seen people not look at their credit because they're afraid of what they were going to see.
- 27:22The problem with that is one in four people have an error on their credit report that's costing them money.
- 27:28So we have an affiliate.
- 27:29It's called WalletHub.
- 27:31WalletHub is free.
- 27:32It's not a trial.
- 27:33It's free.
- 27:34It allows you to update your score daily, get credit monitoring around the clock, and it tells you in plain language, even language that Ralph can understand, what's actually pulling your number down.
- 27:43So if you're interested in our affiliate link, that's because we're going to earn a small commission.
- 27:47Doesn't cost you an extra dime.
- 27:49Go to becomingfinanciallyconfident.com wallet.
- 27:53Again, that's becomingfinanciallyconfident.community.
- 27:57And check out WalletHub, because you will find them to be a great company to work with.
- 28:08Okay, this next segment is we're just gonna dive deep into Ralph's stories because he has a breadth of experience.
- 28:15I've known Ralph for a short amount of time, and every time I'm just like, tell me more.
- 28:19This is how I'm gonna learn about finances.
- 28:21So, Ralph, the story that you have prepared today, I'm sure the audience and myself are really excited to hear about it.
- 28:28What are you gonna talk to us about?
- 28:29Yeah, and this one's a little hard because one of the things that I decided when I was gonna launch this show is I wanted to make sure that I was going to be transparent, because all of us.
- 28:40Hear me on this.
- 28:41All of us make financial mistakes.
- 28:44I'm the accountant.
- 28:45I spent 30 years telling people what to do.
- 28:48I spent 30 years telling people to save early start for retirement.
- 28:52Well, here's a true confession.
- 28:54I didn't put a dollar away from my own retirement TILL I was 47 years old.
- 29:00And so today I want to talk about what that cost me, because you might say, oh, wow, Ralph didn't do that either.
- 29:04I got a call the other day from a client, and they said, ralph, I really need to start putting money into retirement.
- 29:10Is it too late?
- 29:12So we're going to talk about that here in a few minutes.
- 29:13But that's really the truth.
- 29:15You know, I was 47 years old, and to be blunt.
- 29:18And I'll talk about this next Thursday when I talk about getting on the same page as your spouse when it comes to money.
- 29:24But my wife was just constantly on me about this.
- 29:27She said, ralph, you know, we need to figure this out.
- 29:29In fact, I'm going to be very candid with you.
- 29:31It led to us separating in our marriage, and it was because she felt like I wasn't protecting her.
- 29:37I wasn't giving her the security that she needed.
- 29:40Now, my argument always was, well, I'm building a business.
- 29:43I'm a sole proprietor.
- 29:45I'm running this business.
- 29:46I had every reason not to do it, but those reasons just weren't good enough.
- 29:52Can I ask a question here?
- 29:55So it just sounded like your wife was saying, you know, I need to feel protected.
- 30:00And it was about money.
- 30:01It's.
- 30:02I think what I'm getting, what I'm picking up is you as the Accountant weren't having those conversations with your wife the way that she expected you to.
- 30:11And it's, It's.
- 30:13It's interesting because you are the accountant.
- 30:16Yeah.
- 30:16So you would assume.
- 30:17Well, as the accountant, you would know the right things to do.
- 30:20And I do know the right things to do.
- 30:22But, you know, I really told myself three lies, and I want to get into those because those are the lies I tell them.
- 30:27And listen, there's no judgment on this show.
- 30:30Yeah.
- 30:30This is on me.
- 30:31Like, this is me talking.
- 30:32Here's the first lie I sold to myself.
- 30:34And you may be thinking the same thing.
- 30:36I'll get to it.
- 30:37You know, it'll happen.
- 30:38I'm just a young guy at this point, and the years were just ticking.
- 30:43And, you know, I never decided to save.
- 30:45I didn't decide not to save.
- 30:47I just never decided to do it.
- 30:50Yeah.
- 30:50So if you're in that same feeling right now, I want you to hear me loud and clear.
- 30:55Someday is not a date.
- 30:58It's not a date you can put on your calendar.
- 31:00It's never going to show up on your calendar.
- 31:01So that's the first lie.
- 31:02And I told myself this lie for many years.
- 31:05I've made good money since I was 20 some years old.
- 31:08I'm going to show you some charts here in a few minutes, and we'll share the charge to our community.
- 31:12But that's the first.
- 31:13First line, second line.
- 31:14And I bet a lot of people raise their hands right now because I used to say this every month.
- 31:18My wife would say to me, hey, are we putting anything into retirement?
- 31:21Yeah.
- 31:21You know, there's just not anything extra this month.
- 31:24We're raising two young kids.
- 31:27Well, here's the truth.
- 31:28There's never going to be anything extra.
- 31:31Yeah.
- 31:32Extra is not a thing.
- 31:34Extra is something you create.
- 31:35It's something you intentionalize.
- 31:37It's say, I am going to do this.
- 31:39It's not going to be something that arrives.
- 31:41There's no right period of that.
- 31:45And the thing that I found in my practice, the people who actually save aren't the people with extra.
- 31:52The people who save are people who build a pattern.
- 31:54They build a habit.
- 31:56And that's the difference.
- 31:57And I kept saying to myself, oh, you know, there's nothing extra this month.
- 32:00You know, the kids need this, and we need this, and we just never got to that point.
- 32:05Yeah.
- 32:06Now the third lie.
- 32:07And then I'm going to let Juliet ask some questions.
- 32:10Here is.
- 32:11And this was a tough one for me, too, because I shared with you my health journey type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure.
- 32:17I didn't really care about my physical being because I was like, I'm living for today.
- 32:21So the third lie I told myself is I might not even live that long.
- 32:26I wasn't planning to go away, but in a lot of ways I was gambling and I was betting against myself.
- 32:33And one thing, if you go on about gambling, don't ever bet against yourself.
- 32:38Yeah, that's true.
- 32:39And here's the thing, and I'll share some of these numbers here in a second, but a 65 year old man today, if you're 65, you're listening to me or watching me right now.
- 32:46If you're 65, you could live another 17 and a half years.
- 32:52One in four people who reach 65 are going to live past 90 now.
- 32:56And that's a great thing.
- 32:57That's a fantastic thing.
- 32:59Yeah, the risk was never dying at 70.
- 33:03The risk is living to 92 and not having anything to show for it.
- 33:08That's a true thing.
- 33:10So I think my first question is, when you made your first, when you saved for the first time in your life at age 47, do you remember how much you put towards.
- 33:20And yeah, that's the first question.
- 33:22How much did you put?
- 33:23Yeah, so let me just show you a couple.
- 33:25I'm going to pop in here in a slide.
- 33:27If you're listening to us, go check us out on our becomingfinanciallyconfident.com community because I want to go through a couple slides because this will really go to what you're talking about.
- 33:36And so the first one I want to share, and this was the bet, so the bet I was making.
- 33:41And this is a really interesting thought if you think about it.
- 33:45So when people reach 65, most men can expect to live another 18.1 years.
- 33:51Now if you're a woman, you're even better off.
- 33:52You're going to live another 20.7 years.
- 33:55So roughly.
- 33:56Yeah.
- 33:57So what they talk about is your actual, you know, the expected life expectancy for a man is 83, a woman is 86.
- 34:05But the odds are reaching 91 in four men and one in three women.
- 34:10So the risk is dying, you know, not dying before you, you know, not have enough money, but running out of money.
- 34:15Yeah.
- 34:16And here's the big, here's the big thing I want to explain because this is what you're talking about.
- 34:20If I had started at age 27 and I put $500 a month into a retirement account and let's just assume a 7% annual retirement in 40 years at age 67, I would have $1,310,000.
- 34:37That's a big number now because I waited to start till 47.
- 34:41If I put that same $500 a month in at 7%, 20 years, compounding to 67, guess how much money I have then?
- 34:50$260,000.
- 34:53So this decision to not start till I was 47 cost me $1,050,000.
- 35:00That's the real number.
- 35:01That sounds really nice if you know you had a million additional in your savings.
- 35:07Exactly.
- 35:08And think about it.
- 35:09Now, I'm going to throw up one more slide here because it's going to be relevant to this.
- 35:14And this one is 20 years skipped.
- 35:16So had I put $500 a month into retirement for 20 years, I would have taken out of my pocket $120,000.
- 35:25That's what it would have cost me at $500 a month for 20 years.
- 35:29Yep.
- 35:29But it would have grown to 1,053,000.
- 35:33Yep.
- 35:33So that $120,000 decision wasn't $120,000.
- 35:38It was well over a million dollars.
- 35:41Yeah.
- 35:42And that's the thing that a lot of people don't understand.
- 35:43So this is the thing I'm really speaking about today, is understanding what compound looks.
- 35:48And I throw another slide up here because I think this one really nails it for people to think about this.
- 35:53If you have an average return of 7%, $1 invested after 40 years at 7% is worth $15.
- 36:01So think about it.
- 36:01It's like basically $1 compounds to 15, but if you take that same dollar at age 47, 20 years, compounding, it only goes to $4.
- 36:12That's where the.
- 36:13Yeah, that's where the compounding.
- 36:14And I got one more slide, and that's this one, because this really answers your question.
- 36:19So that $500 a month that I could have done at age 27, if I want to get back up to the level of having enough in savings to match that.
- 36:28Buckle up, Juliet.
- 36:29Here's a number.
- 36:30I would then have to put in $2,500 a month for 20 years to make up for the difference.
- 36:38So five times to catch up.
- 36:40Now, the good news about that is I haven't told you you can't catch up.
- 36:44Up.
- 36:45Yeah, but you understand that the reality here, and this isn't a judgment, the reality is you're going to be in a tough situation here.
- 36:52I.
- 36:53This, this.
- 36:53There's this, like, phrase, or maybe, maybe people, other people say it, where it's like the best time to start was yesterday, but the next Best time is now.
- 37:02Exactly.
- 37:03So if you're sitting there right now and you're thinking, like I said, I had this client say to me the other day, you know, Ralph, I haven't really done much for retiring.
- 37:09I say, okay, I get it.
- 37:10It been there, done that.
- 37:12But you can start today.
- 37:13Yeah.
- 37:14And you can start with $25 a week.
- 37:16You can start with $50 a week.
- 37:18You can start with whatever works for you.
- 37:20It's all about building up that habit.
- 37:22It's kind of like exercise.
- 37:23I remember when I first wanted to start losing weight, if I got up and walked across the room, I got out of air like I was just gassed out.
- 37:30So my doctor said, ralph, here's what I want you to do.
- 37:32I want you to start every day.
- 37:33Walk to the mailbox.
- 37:35Yeah.
- 37:36And that's what I did.
- 37:36And I just started that habit.
- 37:37Well, you can do the same thing with your finances.
- 37:41Yeah.
- 37:41I'm curious.
- 37:42I'm going to throw a question to the audience and would love you guys to respond is like, if you have a habit of saving or you haven't done it yet.
- 37:50Right.
- 37:50But if you do have a habit of saving, I'm so curious as to what frequency are you doing it on a weekly basis?
- 37:58Do you know that number?
- 37:59On a weekly basis?
- 38:00A daily basis.
- 38:01Maybe it's monthly, maybe it's quarterly.
- 38:02Maybe it's annually, like weekly.
- 38:05What makes you guys feel comfortable?
- 38:07How frequent you save.
- 38:08Right.
- 38:09And then for.
- 38:13I want to keep this ambiguous.
- 38:14So, like, people don't know whether you actually save or not.
- 38:16Right.
- 38:16But if you do want to get into the habit of saving, what do you think is going to be the right frequency for you?
- 38:22Is it making it a daily practice before turning it into a weekly practice and a monthly practice?
- 38:29Would love to know.
- 38:30Yeah.
- 38:30I love what jennifeinance put in the chat.
- 38:33She says the eighth wonder of the world is compound growth.
- 38:36Beautiful.
- 38:37It's true.
- 38:37It's true.
- 38:38It's time to today.
- 38:38I mean, that's the truth.
- 38:39I mean, if you teach, you know, we've talked about teaching your children, your young folks, teach them compound interest, because that is a skill that if they understand it can be amazing.
- 38:50It really can, Ralph.
- 38:52Oh, yes, I totally agree with you, Ralph.
- 38:55I'm wondering, like, through your clients who do start saving, like, how do they, from your experience, what makes them turn the switch to be like, yes, it's never too late to start now.
- 39:08And then the next thing is, do they come back to you and be like, oh, my God, Ralph, I saved.
- 39:13I put $10 away this week.
- 39:14Like, do they come back with you with those stories?
- 39:16Yeah, they do, because it really becomes this.
- 39:19It's an interesting thing.
- 39:20It's almost like lighting a fire.
- 39:22When you first start the fire, you just got a little flame.
- 39:25But if you keep that flame going, you add a little bit more to it, and you add a little bit more to it, then that flame becomes a bigger fire and a bigger fire.
- 39:32And what you find, and I've seen this in my own practice, what you find is then people catch on fire for this, and that's a good thing, because they start to see the value of this.
- 39:42Now, I'm gonna answer your question.
- 39:43You ask to the audience.
- 39:45I honestly think the best way to do it.
- 39:47And there's a thing out there called pay yourself first.
- 39:49I'm a huge proponent of that.
- 39:51I think whenever you get paid, whether it's weekly, biweekly, monthly, whatever that is, Right.
- 39:57The first thing you do is carve out your savings percentage from the top.
- 40:01And this is.
- 40:02This is, you know, after the.
- 40:04You plan for taxes, right?
- 40:06Yeah, well, yes.
- 40:07I mean, I think that's fair, but honestly, I think I could make the argument that maybe you should do that even before taxes.
- 40:15Okay.
- 40:16Because who's the most important thing in that now?
- 40:18Listen, don't.
- 40:18The IRS gonna come knocking at my door like.
- 40:20Ralph, did you just tell people not to pay their taxes?
- 40:22No, that's not what I said.
- 40:23Said, still pay your taxes, please.
- 40:25But it's about being intentional, you know, and I see what PR shows.
- 40:29A compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world.
- 40:31He who understands it, earns it.
- 40:33He who doesn't, pays it.
- 40:34Yeah, that's right.
- 40:35That's exactly right.
- 40:36No, it's true, though.
- 40:37And that's the big difference.
- 40:39So I would say, you know, one of the big things I talk about all the time when I counsel individual people is have a money meeting with yourself once a week.
- 40:47Okay.
- 40:47And in that money meeting, look at what came in this week and what went out this week.
- 40:53And then talk about what is your intention to make it better?
- 40:56What is your intention to make what better?
- 40:59Your financial situation.
- 41:01Right.
- 41:01Yeah.
- 41:01What is your.
- 41:02To get better than where you are.
- 41:05Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 41:06And I gotta be honest, if you're starting late, it's going to be harder.
- 41:10Yeah.
- 41:11It's just true.
- 41:12Yeah.
- 41:13Late money's gonna buy a smaller number, but a smaller number is not 0, and 0 is not failure.
- 41:20Yes.
- 41:20And I just want to throw something out there, because this is Something that one of my, I'll say proponents or other guys in the sphere is Dave Ramsey.
- 41:28Yeah.
- 41:29And this is where we're not Dave Ramsey.
- 41:31You notice I have not one time said to shame a single person.
- 41:35I'm not going to tell you you're stupid because you haven't saved for retirement.
- 41:38There's a, there's a.
- 41:40I'm not calling Dave Ramsey a clown, but I've heard him say it.
- 41:43Well, you're stupid.
- 41:44You've made dumb decisions.
- 41:46You will never hear that from this show.
- 41:48This show is all about helping you go from where you are.
- 41:52And for so many people, they hear that and they get into this cycle of shame and it keeps them from going forward because they figure, well, why bother at this point?
- 42:02I've already done this.
- 42:03You know, I've already gone too far.
- 42:06I feel shameful already.
- 42:07I didn't mean to get on my high horse there, but it just drives me crazy when I hear these quote, financial gurus out there talking about, well, you should have done this and you should have done that.
- 42:17That sounds great, but shoulda, woulda, coulda, auta didn't get me anywhere.
- 42:21But today I'm saying to you, you can change the dynamic here.
- 42:25There are some comments that I want to shout out real quick.
- 42:27Duchess of New Jersey saying saving has been so difficult.
- 42:30I only recently started an account with Fidelity.
- 42:32First of all, yay.
- 42:34Opening the Fidelity.
- 42:35Opening a savings account is just the start of it and you're making moves.
- 42:40So we're super excited about that.
- 42:41Ralph, I'm thinking like maybe we should have maybe like a month long challenge where we just every everybody who joins in on the challenge, we can put a little money savings away and everybody gets to win at the
- 42:52end of the month or something like that.
- 42:53I don't know.
- 42:53I think you've just named our October challenge.
- 42:56Oh, that means I have to participate in it.
- 42:59See, Juliet is an active participant in the show.
- 43:03I love it.
- 43:03Let's do that.
- 43:05Abby is our producer.
- 43:06She's behind the scenes.
- 43:08Abby is going to put together an October challenge for us and I will participate as well.
- 43:13And we're going to see how much we can save in the month of October.
- 43:17Yeah.
- 43:17And then we have another comment from PR Shield.
- 43:19You know what?
- 43:20I have found myself more mindful my money situation just from the one simple step of listening into this conversation every day.
- 43:27I'm so happy to hear that because honestly, that's like one of the reasons I wanted to be the co host of this show as well.
- 43:35Because I Wanted to be more mindful of my own money.
- 43:37It's vulnerable, I'm sure.
- 43:39Ralph, you.
- 43:40Thank you for sharing your story.
- 43:41I still have a lot of questions for you.
- 43:43But as vulnerable, talking about money, because it's, like, uncomfortable, you know?
- 43:47Oh, it's.
- 43:48Yeah.
- 43:48And especially for me.
- 43:49Think about it.
- 43:49And I'm not trying to call myself anybody.
- 43:51People pay me for my guidance.
- 43:53Yeah.
- 43:54You know, and.
- 43:55And they come to me and they're like, oh, Ralph, you have all the secrets.
- 43:57Yeah.
- 43:57I had all the secrets for everybody.
- 43:58For everybody.
- 43:59But I didn't do them for myself.
- 44:02Back to that mindset, though.
- 44:03I.
- 44:03What was it for you that made you be like, the time is now.
- 44:08I will save money.
- 44:09Right.
- 44:10Because you've had those conversations.
- 44:11You've given that advice to your clients before.
- 44:14You've had that hard.
- 44:16Hard conversations.
- 44:17Multiple conversations, I'm sure, with your wife.
- 44:20But internally, what was the thing that made you actually change your behavior?
- 44:25I'll tell you.
- 44:26It's because a client.
- 44:27Actually, what happened was I was meeting with a client, husband and wife.
- 44:30And the husband had just gotten diagnosed with early onset dementia.
- 44:34So he had Alzheimer's.
- 44:36And him and his wife had saved nothing.
- 44:41I'm talking about, they are 65, 66 years old.
- 44:44They were relying 100% on Social Security.
- 44:46Now, fortunately, they had their house paid off.
- 44:48Okay.
- 44:49But they sat at my desk, and here the husband.
- 44:52And nothing he did to cause it.
- 44:55It was just one of those things.
- 44:57And the wife just sat there and sobbed.
- 44:59And she said, ralph, for so many years, we went on trips, we bought what we wanted.
- 45:04We helped this one out, we helped that one out, but we never put away for ourselves.
- 45:09And she said, now I'm sitting here.
- 45:11And I was crying, too.
- 45:13Like, that's the kind of person I am.
- 45:15And she goes, my husband needs to go into a facility because I can't help him anymore.
- 45:20And she says, the only thing we can do is sell our home and use everything that we have so that we can spend it all down so he can qualify for Medicaid.
- 45:31Wow.
- 45:32And when she said that to me, I said, ralph, here you are.
- 45:35I was like, 47, 46 years old.
- 45:37You make good money, dude.
- 45:39Like, why are you putting yourself into this position?
- 45:42So that was the thing that really changed me because I saw it all around me, but yet I hadn't done anything about it.
- 45:48And like I said, this is a very vulnerable thing.
- 45:50And listen, money things are vulnerable.
- 45:52I get it.
- 45:53It.
- 45:53Yeah.
- 45:53I tell people this all the time.
- 45:55People share with me stuff that they don't share with their spouses.
- 45:58People share with me intimate details of their life.
- 46:02Yeah.
- 46:02We're gonna have a relationship expert on next Friday.
- 46:04Talk about how this breaks down marriages.
- 46:06I'm gonna talk about my personal story next Thursday, so make sure you check it out.
- 46:09But this is a big deal and it causes so much stress.
- 46:13Not just for you, but the people around you.
- 46:16Yeah.
- 46:16Duchess of New Jersey said my nightmare, having absolutely nothing to survive on.
- 46:21Yes.
- 46:22And you know, like when I was younger, I also, I wouldn't say like frivolously spend, but it was very much like, oh, I have money now.
- 46:31And then you get tempted by so many things like, I don't know, fomo, which is, if you don't know FOMO is fear of missing out.
- 46:38So you see like social media influencers, they're like, oh my God, they're buying this or go on these trips.
- 46:43I have some money coming in.
- 46:44And I would also spend my money.
- 46:46I saved, but I also spent more than I am happy about now that I'm thinking about it.
- 46:53No, absolutely true.
- 46:54And the thing is, it's funny you said fomo.
- 46:56I had to look that up one day, one of my kids sent me a text with these.
- 46:59What is up with the text with the three letters?
- 47:02You got to try to go discern it.
- 47:03I need a dictionary.
- 47:05What in the world are you even saying to me?
- 47:07But anyway, I missed that one.
- 47:08But we don't have a whole lot of time left and I want to talk about some prevention things because the one thing I want to spend a few minutes talking about about is how do you prevent this?
- 47:17It's all about that compound interest.
- 47:19And if I could go back to my 27 year old self, I would say, ralph, do it now.
- 47:25Because think about it.
- 47:26I could have put away $500 a month.
- 47:29Could I have found 500?
- 47:30No, maybe not.
- 47:31Maybe I could have found $100 a month.
- 47:33Even $100 a month would have given me a big number.
- 47:36I don't have the number right here in front of me.
- 47:38But.
- 47:39So that's the thing.
- 47:40What could you have done?
- 47:41The sooner you start, the better.
- 47:44So if you're listening to me right now, if you're watching us right now, do something today.
- 47:48Yeah.
- 47:49It could be a simple Savings account.
- 47:51Put $10 in it a week, put $5 in it a week, you are going to find it.
- 47:56Once you start that habit, you're going to find it's really going to grow from there.
- 48:00It truly will.
- 48:01Right.
- 48:02And also say, like duchess of NJ when you opened your Fidelity account.
- 48:07That's just step one.
- 48:08Right.
- 48:08Like, you don't even have to think about maybe, oh, I need to have X of money to put in.
- 48:12Right.
- 48:13Like, even the act of opening an account right now, where you're like, this is where my money's going to go to perfect a move in the right direction.
- 48:21And that's all you need.
- 48:22Yeah.
- 48:22I say this all the time.
- 48:24It's all about the first step.
- 48:27Take that first step.
- 48:29And because when you take that first step, you're going to start to feel.
- 48:31Because so many people live in this lie that they tell themselves, well, I'm just not good with money.
- 48:35I can never save.
- 48:37You can save.
- 48:38You can find it.
- 48:40Yeah.
- 48:40Like Juliet shared, you know, she said, you know, sometimes she spends frivolously.
- 48:43Me too.
- 48:44Raise my hand twice.
- 48:45It happens.
- 48:46So the truth is, most of us have margin.
- 48:49What I mean by margins?
- 48:50We have a little extra weekend and we don't do that, that Starbucks run, or we don't do this or we don't do that.
- 48:55Find something and start to build that habit, because you're going to find it's going to be a dynamic improvement in.
- 49:02It's not necessarily your finances, but in how you feel about yourself and when you've.
- 49:07Because here's the thing about money.
- 49:09Most money issues are not about math.
- 49:12This is an accountant saying this.
- 49:13I'm an accountant that hates math.
- 49:15But, you know, I love.
- 49:16I love people and I love relationships, and I know this.
- 49:21Your relationship with money is an emotional relationship.
- 49:24Yeah.
- 49:25That's what you need to cure.
- 49:27Yeah.
- 49:27When you can figure that out.
- 49:29And we're going to help you on this show figure that out.
- 49:31Because most of the people that are struggling with money issues, it's because of fear.
- 49:35It's because of overwhelm.
- 49:36It's a whole bunch of.
- 49:38Not anything related to money, anything related to math.
- 49:42It's about things related to emotions.
- 49:46Yes.
- 49:48Before we go into the next segment, I just want to do what my takeaways from this conversation with you is about.
- 49:54Right.
- 49:55The first thing, if you have never saved, it doesn't matter what age you are, you're never too late.
- 50:01You can start now.
- 50:03Right.
- 50:03And all we're saying is, is take one step.
- 50:06It could be, hey, oh, I have a $5 bill.
- 50:09This is going to go into my savings account.
- 50:12Right.
- 50:13Or it could be what Duchess did.
- 50:15Open an account with Duchess chose Fidelity.
- 50:18I have Marcus.
- 50:21We can talk about, you know, those options in a future money move, perhaps, or our October challenge.
- 50:28And then the third thing I would say is, what did you say?
- 50:33I did not even write this down.
- 50:34Oh, my God.
- 50:36They look back at the show notes.
- 50:37We're going to have.
- 50:38You know what?
- 50:39I'll do this in the this week Saturday's wrap up where we do highlights.
- 50:43I'll think about it.
- 50:44Okay?
- 50:45But those are the two things.
- 50:46If you have never saved and you want to start saving, great, kudos.
- 50:51Emotionally, you're ready to go, right?
- 50:53And then just do one thing for yourself, whether like one actual step, whether it's opening account out or finding dollar some money on the side and just being like, I'm not touching this money.
- 51:03I'm not spending it on whatever you usually spend it on.
- 51:07This is going to go straight into my savings and I'm going to give.
- 51:09You a third piece to this.
- 51:11Okay?
- 51:12Celebrate that.
- 51:13Celebrate yourself.
- 51:15You've made a decision.
- 51:17I don't care what size it is.
- 51:18I don't care the impact of that.
- 51:20Celebrate yourself.
- 51:21Now, don't go celebrate it by buying stuff, but celebrate the wins.
- 51:25We're gonna talk about wins of the week.
- 51:27Yeah, it's an emotional one, but we're gonna talk about wins of the week tomorrow.
- 51:29But celebrate those things.
- 51:31That's how you keep this momentum going.
- 51:34Celebrate, celebrate.
- 51:35I'm gonna break in the.
- 51:36I'm gonna break into rhyme here.
- 51:37We're gonna have a celebration time.
- 51:39Come on.
- 51:39But anyway, I'm just telling you that you got to celebrate those little wins because those little wins turn into this.
- 51:46And to turn this.
- 51:47Now I'm gonna say something.
- 51:48Dutchess just cracked me up.
- 51:49She says I celebrate by shopping.
- 51:51A lot of us do that.
- 51:53So it's an emotional thing.
- 51:54It's an emotional thing Again, it's that dopamine thing.
- 51:57You want that dopamine high.
- 51:58But don't celebrate by shopping.
- 52:00Celebrate by saying, you know what?
- 52:02I'm not bid with money.
- 52:04I can save.
- 52:06I can do these things.
- 52:07Celebrate by saying, I am doing this for me.
- 52:11Absolutely.
- 52:12I'm doing this for me.
- 52:13Yeah.
- 52:15Okay.
- 52:16Tomorrow is Friday, so we do have a money move.
- 52:19Ralph, can you remind us what our money move for this week is?
- 52:22Yes.
- 52:23So what we want to do this week is we want to make sure we're putting a lock on all three of our.
- 52:27No.
- 52:28Excuse me.
- 52:28No.
- 52:28The money move this week is make one phone call.
- 52:31If you know someone.
- 52:32Your house is on snap, call your state office and ask a single question.
- 52:36What is that recertification date?
- 52:38That date of October 1st.
- 52:40Understand the math.
- 52:41And what I was also going to mention is don't forget your homework for this week, which we're going to to.
- 52:45We're going to check your homework.
- 52:46Remember when you were in school and the teacher would come in, okay, let's take a look at your homework.
- 52:50We're going to do that tomorrow and we're going to talk about did you put that freeze on all three of your credit bureaus?
- 52:57That's a super important thing to do.
- 53:00Yep, yep.
- 53:02I'm still in the process of doing that.
- 53:03I have two more still left to go.
- 53:05So, yeah, that's on my homework, homework to do list for today.
- 53:09And I got one more thing I want to talk about today.
- 53:11And we talked about, you know, Ralph may not live that long and all that sort of thing.
- 53:15And I've sat with families who didn't prepare for that.
- 53:19One of the statistics I mentioned on the show the other day, 70% of people don't have a will.
- 53:25If you don't have a will right now we've got an affiliate with a company called easywell.
- 53:29I'm going to encourage you to go check them out.
- 53:32It's a way you go onto their website, they walk you through the questions just in one sitting.
- 53:37And for $149, you'll get a will.
- 53:39You get a durable power of attorney and a health care directive.
- 53:42All of these are attorney reviewed and built for your state.
- 53:45Now, I'm an accountant.
- 53:46I'm not an attorney.
- 53:47I'm not giving you legal advice.
- 53:49But I know what the absence of this document costs.
- 53:51So if you're interested in taking a look at our affiliate link, it's becoming financiallyconfident.comezwill Again, that's becomingfinanciallyconfident.comezwill that's an affiliate link.
- 54:04So we do earn a commission, but it costs you nothing else.
- 54:08So this is one of those things that if you don't have a will and a big number of people don't have it, make sure you check out Easy will by going to becomingfinanciallyconfident.com easywill.
- 54:19All right, that is it for today's episode of becoming financially confident.
- 54:22I will just say tomorrow is Friday.
- 54:25We ralph talked about we're going to be doing wins of the week.
- 54:28I encourage everybody in the audience to come with your wins of the week and it could be even something emotional.
- 54:35Right?
- 54:35Like maybe you are a shopaholic and you're like, I did not give into that.
- 54:40Right.
- 54:40Or you did open a savings account or you finished this week's money move, the homework of freezing all your credit reports.
- 54:48Bring those wins of the week tomorrow, and we can all celebrate together.
- 54:52And one more thing, if you'd like to record a message for us, we'd be happy to play it on the show.
- 54:56You go to becomingfinanciallyconfident.com voicemail.
- 55:00It's really that simple.
- 55:01You go to that website, you click record, and we will play on the show because we'd like to hear from you.
- 55:06So again, I'm Ralph Eastep, Jr.
- 55:08And I'm Juliet.
- 55:09And we're going to see you tomorrow on this show.
- 55:11And remember, our whole show is about breaking free from money shame one conversation at a time.
- 55:17And I feel like we had a really good conversation today.
- 55:19So make sure you come back and join us for tomorrow tomorrow show.
