- 0:06your impact in the world. I'm Steph Safra, your host.
- 0:09Let's explore the power of showing up with intention and
- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for impact.
- 0:22Hello team. Happy new year.
- 0:24Wow, what a freaking exciting time to be alive.
- 0:29I don't know if you're reading anything about this new year,
- 0:322026, but it's apparently the year of the Horse.
- 0:36Last year was all about the year of the snake.
- 0:38It was about shedding skins, shedding what we didn't need
- 0:42what what didn't serve you. And that could have been
- 0:44friendships or old habits or jobs or different relationships.
- 0:48It could have been bad habits or blind spots, different ways of
- 0:52being that you didn't really want to take with you into this
- 0:55new year. Whatever it was that didn't feel
- 0:57aligned. It was a about dropping those
- 0:59things that were misaligned. But this year, this year is the
- 1:03year of the horse. It's all about building.
- 1:05It's a year of strength, a year of momentum, of opportunity and
- 1:09alignment. This year is about moving
- 1:12forward with a purpose. And when I think about what that
- 1:15means to me, what momentum and moving forward with a purpose
- 1:19means to me, I think about this idea I need to create more than
- 1:24I consume this year. And I've been thinking about
- 1:27this a lot because as I do, I always think about what's coming
- 1:30up for me in the in the new year, what didn't work as well
- 1:33for me last year. Just sort of do a little audit,
- 1:36zoom out, see the big picture. And I know you've heard this
- 1:39before, creation over consumption.
- 1:42It's this idea that we need to get into action more than being
- 1:46complacent or sitting passively. And that doesn't mean that there
- 1:51aren't times when we do need to sit and take in information.
- 1:54That's not what I'm saying. It doesn't mean that we don't
- 1:56learn and consume knowledge. There's always a time and a
- 2:00place for that. But I'm very much feeling the
- 2:02energy that I want to make sure that I'm creating things for my
- 2:06life this year and being in the spirit of momentum and forward
- 2:10action. And that means that I need to be
- 2:13really conscious of when I'm in consumption mode and when I'm in
- 2:17creation mode. I often think about when I was
- 2:21in grad school and there were a lot of students that I was in
- 2:25school with who were kind of perpetual life students, meaning
- 2:30this was like their third or fourth graduate program.
- 2:34They were students for life. They really weren't going out
- 2:39and using the degrees that they got.
- 2:41They would just go get another one or they'd enroll in another
- 2:44program. And it really didn't make a lot
- 2:47of sense to me at the time. I didn't understand exactly what
- 2:49that was. But as I've had more years under
- 2:52my belt, I've seen this happen in people.
- 2:54They are perpetual learners. They're perpetual students, but
- 2:57they don't really act on the knowledge they gain.
- 3:00They never really do anything with the program that they've
- 3:04gone through or the certification that they've
- 3:06gotten or the graduate degree that they've worked so hard for.
- 3:09Perpetual life students. And I think about that in terms
- 3:13of consumption, they are in perpetual consumption rather
- 3:17than creation, getting out there in the world and using their
- 3:19gifts and doing something. And so if I think about this
- 3:23idea of consumption mode versus creation mode and really wanting
- 3:26to be in creation, I want to think about all the different
- 3:29areas of my life and do an audit there and think about, OK, where
- 3:34am I investing more energy into consuming information and maybe
- 3:39being passive about it rather than being in action and being
- 3:42in forward momentum. And I can think of a couple of
- 3:45specific examples for myself. I know that for this year with
- 3:50this idea, it means that I need to put my phone down more.
- 3:54It means that I need to be consuming less information on
- 3:56social media, in news, in online magazines or articles, even if
- 4:03it is for the purpose of learning.
- 4:05I need to do less of that because realistically it's very
- 4:09fast and furious information intake and at some point for me
- 4:13it's diminishing returns, meaning there's only so much
- 4:17information I can take in effectively that I can consume
- 4:20effectively and use and integrate before it's just
- 4:24overload and I'm I can't really do it anything with it.
- 4:27I mean, how many times have you been scrolling and saved like 6
- 4:32posts that you that you want to come back to you later?
- 4:37Maybe it's just me, but I do that all the time and I'm never
- 4:41going to be able to go back to all those posts and integrate
- 4:44all that information. Even if I have great intention
- 4:47into incorporating that into my businesses, I'm not going to be
- 4:51able to do it. So that's one place I want to be
- 4:54really conscious of creating more than I consume.
- 4:57One of the things I'm going to do to counteract that is to read
- 5:01more instead of be on my phone just consuming information.
- 5:05And yes, I know reading is still a type of consumption.
- 5:08I understand that. But I've noticed something when
- 5:11I'm reading, I have a different type of creativity in my head.
- 5:15It's a different type of integration of information.
- 5:18I'm sitting with this one singular idea for a longer
- 5:21period of time and I notice I can use it, then I can utilize
- 5:25it better, and it almost always leads to an act of creation.
- 5:29Something that I create, whether it's a podcast or I use it in a
- 5:32coaching session, or I'm finding myself talking about it in
- 5:35conversation, or maybe I create a piece of content around it, or
- 5:39I infuse it into a workshop that I'm doing.
- 5:41I've noticed that this type of consumption actually leads to
- 5:46creativity in another realm. I also want to make sure that
- 5:50I'm creating connections and investing in my relationships
- 5:53more than I'm consuming. Meaning I don't want to be
- 5:56watching other people living their lives.
- 5:58I want to be out in the world living mine.
- 6:01And this could look like intentionally scheduling
- 6:05connection with people. It could be a coffee date or a
- 6:08dinner or connecting with my wife or planning for weekends
- 6:12away with friends or trying to be spontaneous in connection and
- 6:15meeting up with people, whatever that might look like.
- 6:18I want to make sure that I'm present and I'm in creation mode
- 6:21in terms of connection rather than just consuming it, which
- 6:25would look like less movies or less watching people live on
- 6:29social media. Same thing goes for my health.
- 6:33I want to make sure that I'm staying vigilant with my health
- 6:35habits and make sure that I'm creating great health rather
- 6:40than just consuming information about it.
- 6:42And I can be a bit of a health information junkie because I
- 6:47love learning about health. I'm passionate about the topic,
- 6:49so I can get really deep into research mode.
- 6:51I can go into some wormholes about this stuff and just
- 6:54consume so many books about it, but in this particular case, I
- 6:58want to make sure that I'm very much in action, that I'm in
- 7:03creation around this. It's easy to get stagnant in our
- 7:08life if we're not in motion. And I know that sounds
- 7:11simplistic. It sounds obvious, but so many
- 7:14of us can't really figure that out.
- 7:16We're not integrating that. It's easy to get stagnant if
- 7:19we're not in motion. It's easy to sit back and say,
- 7:22well, it's not like I'm not doing anything.
- 7:25I'm sitting here and I'm learning.
- 7:27I'm doing some R&D for this project or, you know, I'm not
- 7:30prepared enough, so I need to take in more information so that
- 7:33I feel prepared to do this thing.
- 7:36But I think about this reality all the time.
- 7:38You never learn to swim by reading books about swimming.
- 7:42And at some point, you have to get in the damn water and just
- 7:45splash around a little bit until you figure it out.
- 7:48That's the place I want to be in this year.
- 7:51Creation over consumption. And what's the impact of that?
- 7:57Well, immediately, I can think of a couple of really powerful
- 8:00things. First of all, I guarantee you
- 8:02have some incredible gifts that you could be sharing with the
- 8:05world that you are holding back on because you've been in
- 8:08consumption mode more than creation mode.
- 8:11And that's OK because, you know, last year was the year of the
- 8:15snake. We were, we were all shedding
- 8:17things. There are seasons to everything
- 8:20and the seasonality of life allows us to have a natural
- 8:24swing to the pendulum. We can acknowledge that you
- 8:27can't always be in perpetual motion or action.
- 8:30Sometimes you need to rest. We've talked about that.
- 8:33Sometimes you need to slow down so you can take things in.
- 8:37So I'm not saying that there's never a place for consumption.
- 8:39We all need the yin to the young.
- 8:42But if you did an honest audit of your life and you looked at
- 8:46all the different buckets that you put energy into, I bet you
- 8:50could discern pretty quickly how much energy you're putting into
- 8:52creation and how much you're putting into consumption.
- 8:56And it might be worth a look because that way you can decide
- 8:59what is actually going to move the needle for me this year.
- 9:03For example, do an audit of your screen time.
- 9:05How many hours a day are you spending on your phone?
- 9:08I've had some clients do this pretty recently, actually.
- 9:11I try to do it periodically with people, but they've got a phone
- 9:15audit and they have upwards of seven hours a day on their
- 9:18phone. One of my clients had 11 hours a
- 9:20day and it wasn't even that. They're in a role where they
- 9:23need to be on their phone all the time.
- 9:25Consumption, not creation. That was a huge wake up call to
- 9:30them. You know, every single week that
- 9:33we have our girls, I asked them to check in on their screen time
- 9:36and we have an agreement to keep open communication about that
- 9:40and have them keep it under a certain amount of time every
- 9:42single day. And they don't always love that
- 9:45we do that. But I want to make sure that
- 9:47they are not in a zone of consuming information all day,
- 9:50especially at their age, because it eats into their creativity.
- 9:55It takes away from the things that light up their brain and
- 9:58their hearts like connection and being passionate about things
- 10:03and health and all this other stuff.
- 10:07The second reason I think this is so important is because of
- 10:10that very thing I just said. We have to make sure that you
- 10:12are continuously lighting up your brain and your heart, and
- 10:16there is nothing that does that like creativity.
- 10:19There's nothing that lights us up like being in action,
- 10:22especially when it's something we're passionate about.
- 10:25Creating new things in your life is what keeps the aliveness up
- 10:30team. It keeps us excited.
- 10:33It what it's what creates fulfillment for us and we need
- 10:37that. We cannot be overly consumptive
- 10:40because it can put us in this place that feels stagnant.
- 10:43It can lead to feelings of comparison.
- 10:46It can have us hyper focused on lack or scarcity.
- 10:49It can create feelings of angst or depression.
- 10:52I know you've seen that in people.
- 10:54I know you can see that in culture.
- 10:58So this year, let's stop reading books about how to swim.
- 11:03Let's get out there and jump in the pool team.
- 11:05Let's do the damn thing and learn through doing, learn
- 11:08through action. Let's create.
- 11:11This year, let's do the thing that scares us.
- 11:14The year the Horse is about momentum and movement and
- 11:16purpose and strength. This is about things coming to
- 11:20fruition. So let's rise up to meet it and
