- 0:23Now let's get into today's topic.
- 0:27Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back Trap Trap Tribe live
- 0:30session here tonight with Coach Colin Hunter, and we got a a
- 0:34good one for you tonight. This one's focused on how to
- 0:37bring one program together into one system to get you running
- 0:42all of your events from the 100 all the way to the 3200, which I
- 0:45find is amazing, especially if you got a small team, no
- 0:48resources, which track teams and track coaches often do.
- 0:51We're going to put you in a position and I'll give you the
- 0:55systems and the knowledge to make sure that all of your
- 0:58athletes from for every event is taken care of and your your
- 1:01programs run like a Weld oil machine.
- 1:05So we're going to welcome our coach here of the day, Colin
- 1:08Hunter. And coach, how are you today?
- 1:11I'm good, happy to be here, love talking about this stuff.
- 1:14If we can talk about track or running, cross country,
- 1:19throwing, whatever, I love it. See ya.
- 1:23We're on break, which is awesome.
- 1:27People in the school know we're the holidays are great and it's
- 1:32like nice to get a little bit of a break.
- 1:34So good day. Absolutely man, I I know that
- 1:38breaks are amazing. I'm on I'm on break myself.
- 1:40I actually took a complete day for myself.
- 1:43I did no actual work. I.
- 1:45Just oh, I, yeah, I, I did do, I did have one call getting a
- 1:50quote on some equipment for the I teach, I teach engineering and
- 1:54machine shop. So I had to get 1/4 and some
- 1:56equipment. But that's compared to dealing
- 1:58with a teenager. Sometimes it's not hard.
- 2:00So you know I. Hear that man well, I am going
- 2:06to get us rocking and rolling here because I know we've got a
- 2:08lot of information in front of us and I want to make sure we
- 2:11get to the the juicy parts is which is why we've got people
- 2:14here They were excited about hearing from you.
- 2:18I am going to take a second here.
- 2:19I'm going to make sure we get get it, get our live feed going
- 2:25for on Twitter here, where X as they call it, right?
- 2:27Yep, I still call Twitter. All all all is called Twitter.
- 2:32Yeah, I'm not. I'm not calling it X.
- 2:34Either still a Twitter in my heart.
- 2:37We're tweeting, tweet, tweet, tweet.
- 2:38All righty, so we are in. We're going to be done.
- 2:42Let me grab your stuff here again, we're grabbing 11
- 2:45program, 1 system. And so as we dive into here, we
- 2:49got a lot of coaches that are been chiming in, learning and
- 2:53trying to grow and trying to figure out what pro, what pieces
- 2:56of the puzzle work for them and what pieces of the puzzle work
- 3:00for other people so they can see, hey, maybe I can add some
- 3:02value here. I know we initially started out
- 3:05with the title here, 1 program, 1 system, right?
- 3:09So when we talked about this, right, when you say 1 program, 1
- 3:13system, what does that look like for you?
- 3:17And like, practice from like a day-to-day aspect because it
- 3:20sounds grandiose. Like what does that look like
- 3:22from day-to-day? Yeah, so it's what one thing,
- 3:25what it isn't just to to the table.
- 3:28It's not, it's not me, the head coach running everything.
- 3:34It's not runners, you know, running every event from 100
- 3:38meters up to 2 miles, right? It's still short.
- 3:42Sprinters run sprints long distance, runners long run long
- 3:46distance, and assistant coaches plan their stuff.
- 3:51The the, the biggest, the biggest part of it is
- 3:55communication and planning together.
- 4:00I take care of the overarching thing, but making sure the
- 4:06assistants have the tools they need and that we're all on the
- 4:10same page. And so the really the basics of
- 4:16it is so I'm the head coach. I've been at Byron Center High
- 4:21School since 2019 and when I started there were three of us.
- 4:27We're at we're in Michigan Division One school and I know
- 4:32all states have, you know, they got the different designations,
- 4:35but D1 is the big one. So we're we're at 13114 hundred
- 4:41for enrollment this year. Boys and girls I've got right
- 4:48now. I think I've got 75 girls signed
- 4:51up and 120 boys I think. So it's a big team.
- 4:58Like I said, when I started there were three of us, me
- 5:02coaching distance and pole halt, sprint's jumps coach and a
- 5:07throwing coach. Now there are, I've got 7 full
- 5:13time quote UN quote coaches covering all the events I coach
- 5:19distance and we have a few volunteer assistance as well.
- 5:24So there's about 11-12 coaches depending on the year.
- 5:29And that's a big key. Now, you know, you said, you
- 5:31mentioned smaller teams that that's, you're probably get not
- 5:33going to see that you're not going to see 12, you know,
- 5:36baseball caps running around for a team of 20 or 30 kids.
- 5:41But the, the, the, I think the stuff still applies.
- 5:46And I will say that the, I think the fundamental thing about our
- 5:51team is that I'm sure you've seen teams where the head coach,
- 5:57maybe the head coach is a distance coach and it's a
- 6:00distance team. Maybe the head coach is a Sprint
- 6:03coach and it's a Sprint team, right?
- 6:06For us where we are, it's very hard to win if we are only
- 6:12bought into one event group. And that's kind of, that's kind
- 6:14of what drove this is we've got to be good everywhere.
- 6:18And that means that I have to care about everything.
- 6:20That doesn't mean that I plan the Sprint practices, but me and
- 6:23my Sprint coach are very close. That means that the coaches
- 6:32above other events celebrate events.
- 6:35They don't coach as much as their own.
- 6:38So it's really it's it's really like the broad, the broad
- 6:43description is that everybody, everybody cares about everybody.
- 6:47And we try to be on the same page.
- 6:49Right. Yeah, I'm with you on that.
- 6:51And I think one of the things that I've, I've pushed for
- 6:54myself is to make sure like our sprinters, if they're not
- 6:58jumping, because we do our field events first in Georgia.
- 7:00And so they do about 3 hours of field events from 9:00 to 12:00.
- 7:03And then all the running starts after that, right?
- 7:05So burn up the whole CNS at the at the top of the beat.
- 7:10So anybody who's not jumping or in a field event that requires
- 7:15the sprinters to go to or the distance runners to go to, we
- 7:18send them over to the Thrones, right, or the other or the
- 7:22filament. And I know the popular ones.
- 7:24Hey, everybody go see the long jump.
- 7:25Everybody go see the high jump, right?
- 7:27No, no, no, go see the discus throwers, go see the shot
- 7:29putters. Make sure you go and see the
- 7:32triple jumpers too. That's that's usually often to
- 7:34cut somewhere depending on you know, but you guys, guys got to
- 7:38make sure you go see your throwers and we support them.
- 7:40And the same thing with the distance, you know, everybody's
- 7:41around. We're cheering, we're cheering.
- 7:43So I think that's a really good value to instill the people to
- 7:46make sure you're you guys are all one team and you don't you
- 7:48don't really see that a lot. Just like you said, it's a
- 7:51distance coaches. If the distance coaches, you
- 7:53know the head, then it's a whole distance scene, right?
- 7:56Very rarely do you see well-rounded teams like that.
- 7:59So I think that's amazing. And so you did kind of tap into
- 8:03a little bit about your program. So what about your coaching
- 8:06philosophy, how you know how you brought your program together?
- 8:10And I'm kind of taking a step back here.
- 8:12So yeah, yeah, I'll like you to introduce.
- 8:13You you asked about practice a little bit, which we can
- 8:15definitely talk about. But yeah, stepping back is good.
- 8:18Yeah, that'd be good. So if we, if I know people may
- 8:21want to go who, who is coach, right?
- 8:22Who is Coach Hunter and where is this program?
- 8:26What's this program all about? What's the philosophy behind
- 8:29what it is that you instill in the kids or your core values and
- 8:32the way you run your program, etcetera.
- 8:34What about those things? Yeah.
- 8:36So, yeah, I we're in West Michigan, so for if we mentioned
- 8:44times at all, people from down South, please be gracious
- 8:47because to, to, to me where I am and 1100 boy is, is fast.
- 8:56OK? I know that that's gonna people
- 8:59might turn their nose up a little bit at in some places,
- 9:02but in Michigan that's not slow. Yeah.
- 9:08So core values, the cool. So the cool thing is, is our
- 9:13athletic department is really connected and recently our AD
- 9:20pushed basically developing core values for the entire department
- 9:24and it really gives, it really gives something for me to draw
- 9:28on easily. And so we had this whole process
- 9:32and our core values as the department, our effort,
- 9:34attitude, excellence and respect.
- 9:37And so in that makes it awesome for me because it's all over the
- 9:42wall at school. It's even them like the art,
- 9:45like arts has even taken over it taking that for themselves and
- 9:48like put it in the arts wing. So like kids see these words
- 9:52everywhere, which just get makes it very easy to draw on for the,
- 9:57you know, your beginning of practice meeting, right?
- 10:00OK, here's the word we're going to talk about today.
- 10:02It's, they hear it over and over and over and when they, when
- 10:05they hear it over and over and over from everybody that really
- 10:09helps send the message that it is important.
- 10:13And so I'd say core values wise, it's, it's those 4 words,
- 10:16effort, attitude, excellence and respect.
- 10:20And they, they tie the whole thing together.
- 10:24As far as coaching goes, I really believe that it's always
- 10:29all about the kids. They ask me about training.
- 10:32I can tell you what we're doing in in what I care about, But
- 10:37really I think that training is the easy part.
- 10:42I think that it's not hard to as long as you have the kids best
- 10:50interests at heart and as long as you keep them healthy, like
- 10:53high school kids will will respond to a lot of different
- 10:57stimuluses, right. And so to me, it's all about
- 11:02making sure that they want to come back next year and they
- 11:05want to bring their friends, right.
- 11:08I want them to have a good experience and I want them to
- 11:11love it. I want them to love being on the
- 11:12team. We work hard.
- 11:15Like you can see, you can see in in the times you go on
- 11:18athletic.net. I'm not sure if you guys are a
- 11:20mile split state or an athletic state, but we're, if you go on
- 11:23athletic.net and search us up, like like look at our times from
- 11:27last year. We work hard, but but that's
- 11:32really secondary and that's instilling the the core values
- 11:38that we're trying to instill in the kids.
- 11:41And I did take a take a second to go, Hey, you know, what's,
- 11:43what's this school going on? Right.
- 11:45And I'm, I'm familiar because I ran in New Jersey.
- 11:48So I'm, I'm familiar with the cold weather, right?
- 11:51It's big, big, big difference when you've got heat, you know,
- 11:54majority of the time, but then the cold weather kicks your
- 11:57butt, man. So when, when I see, you know,
- 12:00kids up north and they're running 4342 seconds, I'm like,
- 12:03yeah, that's, that's about equivalent to a 40 point or 41
- 12:06down South, right? So it it's it's exciting to hear
- 12:11what you guys are doing, but also I get I went and looked and
- 12:14I'm like, yo, these guys are running, they're jumping,
- 12:16they're they're making some moves here.
- 12:18And it looks like a well-rounded program.
- 12:20That kind of drives me into the question because I know people,
- 12:24they may not have 7 to 11 coaches, right?
- 12:28Right. Exactly.
- 12:28And I didn't and that's when the staff became what it is.
- 12:33Like I said, for a smaller school you can, you can make it
- 12:36work with less people. But for for us big team, big
- 12:40division, that's the different that is a difference maker, so.
- 12:45But we do have big teams out there, right?
- 12:47So let's let's kind of flow into that, right?
- 12:49Because if even if you don't have a a large team, I think we
- 12:52can take components of what we're about to talk about here
- 12:55to break this down into what's going to be useful.
- 12:58And the one thing I always tell coaches, you don't try to snatch
- 13:01anybody else's complete program because it's probably not going
- 13:03to work for you. Exactly right.
- 13:06I'm sure you've heard of Feed the Cats, right?
- 13:09Are we? We are probably a 75% Feed the
- 13:13Cats Sprint program, but we still like some tempo workouts
- 13:17and we still like some speed endurance workouts.
- 13:19And we have more of a workhorse school than Tony Holler has,
- 13:25right? So we can't take exactly what he
- 13:27does and paste it. We got to figure out what's good
- 13:30and use that and adapt it to our, you know, environment.
- 13:34So. Exactly right.
- 13:36So coaches out there just to word of the word of wisdom here
- 13:39from some experienced coaches, you know, again, do not do copy
- 13:43and paste. You have to find what works for
- 13:44you, where you are and with the kids that you have.
- 13:47It's almost like coaching football.
- 13:49You you can't walk into a Wing T say, hey, this is what we're
- 13:52going to run and you don't have wing T kids, right.
- 13:55You got to figure out what works for you.
- 13:56So as you're planning and you're walking through the season,
- 14:01you've got you're you're over the distance, you've got a
- 14:03Sprint coach, you've got a group of people and you're trying to
- 14:05get In Sync. How do you keep everybody
- 14:08connected instead of siloed between from the 100 to the
- 14:113200? So it's it's so it's and how we
- 14:16do it is there's so there's two components.
- 14:19There's the planning, there's a planning part portion in the
- 14:22practice portion planning wise. So I actually, so I have I sent
- 14:28this out a few weeks ago, but I've got a big spreadsheet.
- 14:31It's called the mega sheet and it has on the first tab, it's a
- 14:37calendar view and people I can, if you want to see this, anybody
- 14:41wants to see this, let me contact me.
- 14:43We'll probably get my contact info out there at the end of
- 14:45this, but you want to see it, I'll send it to you.
- 14:48Not hiding anything. I've got A and you can adapt.
- 14:52You know, this might, somebody might think through this
- 14:55differently or how it looks. It's different person to person.
- 14:59But all right, we got a tab that's just the entire season as
- 15:01a calendar. So week one, week two, week 3,
- 15:05Monday through Sunday. And it has a row in each week
- 15:11for every group. So we got short sprints, long
- 15:15sprints, distance throws, hurdles, jumps, pole vault,
- 15:19right. And I send that out a few weeks
- 15:24ago after I copied and paste. I, I say did a save as from last
- 15:30year. So I keep every year so we can
- 15:32look back. We're not erasing anything.
- 15:34We can look back on previous years and see what we did.
- 15:39And I before I send it out, I and when I go through and like
- 15:46put the meats in there. Practice start date.
- 15:51And so you'll see every week, yeah, Monday through Sunday.
- 15:54The first few weeks, obviously there's no meats, but then
- 15:56you're going to see where meats are.
- 15:58And I say, OK, everybody, here's the blank version for 2026
- 16:04before, you know, before March 10, we need just your general,
- 16:12you know, periodized plan. So I don't need details yet.
- 16:15We just want, OK, day one we're doing sprints, are doing Max
- 16:19speed, long sprints are doing Max speed, distance, doing
- 16:24whatever, you know, Tuesday, Tuesday is a, is a, I'm not sure
- 16:30what we're doing on Tuesday, but Wednesday speed, endurance day
- 16:35distance is doing an easy run, right?
- 16:37And so we can see what everybody's doing just general
- 16:43again, general terms. So we're not going to get any
- 16:46any on the first sheet full calendar.
- 16:49We're not going to get any any more detailed than OK distance,
- 16:53VO2 Max on Monday, Tuesday is easy tempo on Wednesday, you
- 16:59know, long short sprints is Max speed, accelerations, speed,
- 17:03endurance, stuff like that. And then, so then me and my
- 17:09Sprint coach actually met together last week on Friday.
- 17:13And then so we, you actually got a little more detailed, but then
- 17:15we, because I've got, I've got distance in this year, our long
- 17:20sprints coach retired and that's so I'm actually taking on the
- 17:28long sprints group as well. So we, we go 1-2 and then some
- 17:33of those kids also run the four and then we go 48 and then 832,
- 17:39right? Which a lot of, you know, that's
- 17:41not novel. A lot of people do that.
- 17:44So then me and my Sprint coach sat down.
- 17:47It's OK, Monday we just went week by week Monday.
- 17:50What are you doing on the 1st Monday, you know, Tuesday,
- 17:53Wednesday, Thursday and just kind of matched up to see if we
- 17:56can make sure that, OK, I've got a distance workout Monday and
- 18:00then I'm going to be with a Sprint group so that there's
- 18:04not, you know, all the 400 runners and all the ones and
- 18:08twos of the Sprint coach, right? Running a huge workout like
- 18:11that, which is one person is overwhelming.
- 18:13So yeah, we kind of matched up our weeks together last week and
- 18:18then we get a little more detail as we go on.
- 18:23And then probably the first week of March are we start officially
- 18:28on March 10 this year, I think, but the the first week of March
- 18:33was OK. So we've got the first tab of
- 18:39the spreadsheet is the whole season and then each week gets
- 18:43its own tab, right. So then OK, let's go weeks one
- 18:48through 3. Give me your details, right.
- 18:52So get a head start and plan out with detail.
- 18:55Same thing. Everybody can see every event
- 18:58group go into the spreadsheet and start adding your workouts
- 19:02for the first 3 weeks. And then we just try to stay a
- 19:05week ahead. Every Sunday, I just go in that
- 19:10we all, we can all see that sheet all the time, right?
- 19:13But every Sunday I go in and I just copy from the weekly sheet,
- 19:18paste it into an e-mail, say, OK, reminder, here's what we're
- 19:21doing this week. That way me and Sprint coach and
- 19:25hurdle coach can all get an idea of how we've got to divide the
- 19:28track up, you know, on a big day, because there might be a
- 19:31day where, yeah, all the sprinters and all the distance
- 19:35runners and the hurdlers are all running all that.
- 19:38Like we're, you know what? We're going to.
- 19:40We are. I'm going to let my event
- 19:41coaches plan their practices so that their event is successful.
- 19:48We're not going to fight over the track.
- 19:49We are going to collaborate. OK, we're on the track on the
- 19:53same day. We're going to make it work.
- 19:56I also send that sheet to middle school coaches because we share
- 19:59time and space with them too, and that way they can plan OK,
- 20:04they can fit their track workouts in between our big
- 20:09ones. Wow, yeah, that, that sounds
- 20:13great. First of all, that you have that
- 20:16type of relationship with the middle schoolers, right?
- 20:18That also gives an advantage. I think if you get that, that
- 20:21that feeder school, you can actually work them into your
- 20:24system and then build a base, especially with distance man,
- 20:26because you know the distance just takes, it takes mileage
- 20:29over time to get. So that you can you can be a
- 20:32successful sprinter as a sophomore, maybe even a
- 20:35freshman. There is some freshman phenom
- 20:38distance runners, but few and far between.
- 20:41It takes at least sophomore, usually junior year before
- 20:44you're really successful because it's just, it's just time.
- 20:47So. Yeah, it is, man.
- 20:47I, I tell you, we, we've got a, we got a pretty good kid down
- 20:50here. Not, not me.
- 20:52He's at school called Carrollton High School.
- 20:55His name is Dash. His phenomenal guy, man.
- 20:58He just came back from injury and this kind of side note, he
- 21:01just came back from, from some stress fractures running one of
- 21:03the, one of the, the 8K races. Kid came back and ran a 5K and
- 21:10dropped like a 1540 was like dude what the it's like but the
- 21:15kids been running for like like 5 or 6 years like he's been
- 21:19running for a very long time and.
- 21:22Hey gang, Mike Cunningham here. Hey, I hope you enjoyed this
