- 1:04Speaker 1: a drive through car wash. If you live in Cincinnati
- 1:08Speaker 1: or in a part of the world with harsh winter weather,
- 1:11Speaker 1: it's about that time for the first car wash of
- 1:13Speaker 1: the year to get the dirt, road, salt, and overall
- 1:17Speaker 1: crud off of your vehicle. I don't know about you,
- 1:20Speaker 1: but I'm a big fan of the drive through style,
- 1:23Speaker 1: like Mike's car washing Cincinnati. Sure it's more expensive than
- 1:27Speaker 1: doing it yourself, but I enjoy sitting in my car
- 1:31Speaker 1: for the whole process. The brushes and bristles, the lighted
- 1:35Speaker 1: signs that tell you when wax is being applied or
- 1:38Speaker 1: the undercarriage is being cleaned. It's like a very, very
- 1:43Speaker 1: slow amusement park ride. Now let's get to football. Twenty
- 1:49Speaker 1: five years after Anthony Munios became the first and still
- 1:52Speaker 1: only Bengals player to be inducted into the Pro Football
- 1:56Speaker 1: Hall of Fame, he finally has company, as Ken Riley
- 2:00Speaker 1: will be enshrined in August. That was made official on
- 2:03Speaker 1: Thursday when this year's Hall of Fame class was announced
- 2:06Speaker 1: at the NFL Honors ceremony. Riley was one of three
- 2:10Speaker 1: players chosen in the Senior category, along with Chuck Howley
- 2:15Speaker 1: and Joe Cleco. Willie Anderson was a finalist in the
- 2:18Speaker 1: Modern Era category, but we'll have to wait for at
- 2:22Speaker 1: least another year. Ken Riley spent fifteen seasons in a
- 2:25Speaker 1: Bengals uniform, and his sixty five career interceptions is tied
- 2:29Speaker 1: for fifth most in NFL history, a remarkable accomplishment considering
- 2:35Speaker 1: that he didn't even play defense at Florida A and M.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Here are Mike Brown and Bob Trumpy on now Hall
- 2:43Speaker 1: of Famer Ken Riley. Kenny came here as quarterback and
- 2:52Speaker 1: we had Greg Cook. This was before greed Good injured.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Training camp and the quarterbacks would stand and pretty much
- 3:01Speaker 1: watched Greg, and it was obvious who was going to
- 3:04Speaker 1: be the quarterback. Greg was the best player we ever had,
- 3:08Speaker 1: and Kenny was standing there when my dad came over
- 3:13Speaker 1: about the third day he had been in camp and
- 3:17Speaker 1: said to Kenny, you go over there. And that was
- 3:20Speaker 1: the extent of the conversation. Over there was with the
- 3:24Speaker 1: defensive backs, and Kenny went and proceeded to play for US.
- 3:30Speaker 1: I don't know how many years, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, whatever
- 3:33Speaker 1: it was, it was forever. He was a player with
- 3:38Speaker 1: great composure. He could play the ball in the air,
- 3:43Speaker 1: all his poise, knew what was going on, was in
- 3:46Speaker 1: position as he should be on every play, and even
- 3:51Speaker 1: though he was somewhat slight and billed, he was a
- 3:57Speaker 1: firest tackler, one player maneuver he had that was his alone.
- 4:03Speaker 1: I've seen other guys do it, but not not do
- 4:06Speaker 1: it as a regular routine, or they would do just
- 4:12Speaker 1: on occasions when it happened without thinking, can you do
- 4:16Speaker 1: it purposefully? He would come up on these guys who
- 4:20Speaker 1: caught the ball in front of him, and as they
- 4:25Speaker 1: were catching the ball looking back towards the line of scrimmage,
- 4:28Speaker 1: he'd come from behind and hit him right under the
- 4:30Speaker 1: rump and they would go for a cart wheel in
- 4:34Speaker 1: the air, literally, and not all of them kept the ball.
- 4:41Speaker 1: When that went on, he would dislodge the ball from them.
- 4:47Speaker 1: But it was a maneuver that was routine for him,
- 4:50Speaker 1: and I've often wondered why others didn't pick it up
- 4:54Speaker 1: and do it as just a regular way of play.
- 4:58Speaker 1: It didn't seem to hurt anybody. They went for a ride,
- 5:01Speaker 1: but they all came down in a heap and got
- 5:04Speaker 1: right back up. It wasn't injurious. It was just enough
- 5:09Speaker 1: of a blow that it cut their attention, and it
- 5:13Speaker 1: would catch your attention if you saw it as well.
- 5:16Speaker 1: So Kenny had the ability to be rough and tough
- 5:19Speaker 1: as well as smart, and he's so deserving, wonderful teammate,
- 5:27Speaker 1: appreciative of your effort. I never heard him say a
- 5:32Speaker 1: bad word about anybody, always laughing. In fact, Dan, when
- 5:42Speaker 1: I first found out that Ken Riley had been a
- 5:45Speaker 1: quarterback in college, I was astonished because he was so quiet.
- 5:51Speaker 1: He was a hard guy to get to know, not
- 5:53Speaker 1: because of any personality flaw. He was a hard guy
- 5:59Speaker 1: to get to know because he was so studious about
- 6:02Speaker 1: what he was doing and so serious about it. And
- 6:06Speaker 1: the thing that I remembered most about him, and we
- 6:10Speaker 1: had two practices a day, an hour and fifteen minutes each,
- 6:15Speaker 1: seven days a week for two months in preparation for
- 6:18Speaker 1: the season, and other than getting his ankles taped, I
- 6:21Speaker 1: never saw Ken Riley in the training room. So then
- 6:28Speaker 1: we sat down to tables for breakfast, lunch, and dinner
- 6:31Speaker 1: with anybody and everybody. We didn't care what color they
- 6:34Speaker 1: were or where they lived. And every time I sat
- 6:37Speaker 1: down with Ken Riley, You're not going to believe this,
- 6:41Speaker 1: but I kind of dominated the conversation. Maybe I didn't
- 6:47Speaker 1: give Ken Riley a chance, but I was friendly with
- 6:53Speaker 1: all of them. But every time somebody started, I'm on
- 6:58Speaker 1: the sideline with the offense the defenses out there. There
- 7:02Speaker 1: seemed a period of time where every time there was
- 7:04Speaker 1: a big cheer from the stands at Rubert Front Stadium,
- 7:07Speaker 1: it was something that Ken Riley had done. He'd either
- 7:11Speaker 1: lowball the Lance Alworth or a notice Taylor the Kansas
- 7:15Speaker 1: City Chiefs, pupped them over, or had an interception. But again, personally,
- 7:23Speaker 1: he was just great to be around. The wonderful guy,
- 7:27Speaker 1: and there was so much about him. I didn't know
- 7:30Speaker 1: about him until later on in our careers, and then
- 7:33Speaker 1: after he retired. I wish I'd have known it more.
- 7:36Speaker 1: I should have shut up and listened to him. Later
- 7:39Speaker 1: on the podcast, I'll visit with Bengals dot Com editor
- 7:42Speaker 1: Jeff Hobson, who is a Hall of Fame voter. We'll
- 7:45Speaker 1: discuss Ken Riley getting in, how things look for Willie
- 7:49Speaker 1: Anderson and Ken Anderson going forward, and the latest Bengals topics,
- 7:53Speaker 1: including a possible contract extension for Joe Burrow. The Bengals

- 8:13Speaker 1: after twelve years in the NFL that includes the two
- 8:17Speaker 1: nineteen season that he missed due to injury. AJ ranked
- 8:21Speaker 1: second in team history behind Chad Johnson in receptions, receiving yards,
- 8:26Speaker 1: and touchdown catches. Oddly enough, Ken Riley had sixty five
- 8:30Speaker 1: interceptions and AJ Green had sixty five touchdown grabs in
- 8:35Speaker 1: a Bengals uniform, beginning with a fourth quarter game winner
- 8:39Speaker 1: in his NFL debut from Bruce Gradkowski. A good trivia
- 8:44Speaker 1: question to beat the Cleveland Browns. For whatever reason, I
- 8:48Speaker 1: don't have the radio call of that first touchdown pass
- 8:50Speaker 1: in my archives, but I have most of the other ones.
- 8:54Speaker 1: So let's listen back to about three minutes worth of
- 8:58Speaker 1: AJ in action now and I formation backfield on first
- 9:01Speaker 1: and ten, play action fake with out of the right,
- 9:03Speaker 1: got ball for a wide open catches at the eighteen.
- 9:07Speaker 1: It's a touchdown for Adriel Jeremiah Green, his eighth consecutive
- 9:14Speaker 1: game with a touchdown catch on a beautiful fifty seven
- 9:18Speaker 1: yard bomb from the red rifle to play action fake.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Dalton sets up to throw, he rangs it deep for
- 9:24Speaker 1: a wide up in ah a Green catches its time.
- 9:27Speaker 1: Look at him go at the twenty ten the five
- 9:31Speaker 1: touchdown Bengals eighty one yards to eighteen. Adriel Jeremiah Green
- 9:40Speaker 1: boy out to the right, here's a past. AJ wriggles
- 9:43Speaker 1: out of an ankle tackle and runs into the end
- 9:46Speaker 1: zone for a Bengals touchdown. Great yak yards after catch
- 9:52Speaker 1: produces a touchdown for Adriel Jeremiah Green. Dalton takes a
- 9:56Speaker 1: shotgun snap against the five man rush. He's gonna fire
- 9:59Speaker 1: a teach. AJ Green is hoping he bobbles it. He's
- 10:02Speaker 1: got it half the funny, great God, he's still running
- 10:05Speaker 1: ten five touchdown Adriel Jeremiah Green seventy seven yards. The
- 10:13Speaker 1: former juggler as a kid made a juggling catch and
- 10:17Speaker 1: took it to the house to give the Bengals a
- 10:20Speaker 1: twenty one to sixteen lead. On first and ten, Dalton
- 10:23Speaker 1: fakes to mix and tis a high Indeed. J Green
- 10:26Speaker 1: catches half the Buffalo forty s pretty curveen on the
- 10:29Speaker 1: field of Club of Gene five touchdown by seventy seven yards.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Andy Dalton finding a J Green, who roasted the rookie
- 10:41Speaker 1: cornerback R. Davis White Boy goes in motion Dalton back
- 10:45Speaker 1: to throw, steps up, keeps it long. AJ Green is
- 10:48Speaker 1: won agmen, He's gonna touched down Bengals as Andy Dalton
- 10:54Speaker 1: floated a high rainbow fifty four yards down field, a
- 10:59Speaker 1: touch down to AJ Green. No rivas island there. It
- 11:03Speaker 1: is third and seven at the Pittsburgh twenty five. McCarron
- 11:06Speaker 1: five yards behind the line, takes a shotgun snap. It's
- 11:09Speaker 1: a four man rush. AJ gunfield free. J Green catching
- 11:13Speaker 1: there and goes into the end zone. Touchdown Bengals, a
- 11:19Speaker 1: twenty five yard touchdown, and the Bengals have a one
- 11:24Speaker 1: point lead. Dalton back to throw. We're down to five
- 11:27Speaker 1: seconds left and a half. He's gonna throw a high,
- 11:29Speaker 1: deep hail Mary pass into the end JJ and it
- 11:33Speaker 1: is Baba Yea makes the catch. I'm the ricochet hail Mary,
- 11:40Speaker 1: a forty nine yard touchdown pass as a prairie is
- 11:45Speaker 1: answered in the end zone by Adriel Jeremiah Green. Over
- 11:52Speaker 1: the years, the Bengals have probably had more great players
- 11:55Speaker 1: at wide receiver than any other position. Isaac Curtis, Chris
- 11:59Speaker 1: colin Worth, Carl Pickens, Chad Johnson, t J. Hushman, Zada,
- 12:04Speaker 1: AJ Green, and the current trio of Boyd, Higgins and
- 12:08Speaker 1: Chase Here's Mike Brown on AJ Green. If I had
- 12:14Speaker 1: a starting all time Bengals team, he'd be on him.
- 12:19Speaker 1: He brings a different package. He's fast, but not as
- 12:24Speaker 1: fast as Easy. He's quick, but not as quick as Chad.
- 12:30Speaker 1: He has a tremendous catching radius and a very competitive spirit.
- 12:39Speaker 1: You feel really secure with him on one side. They
- 12:45Speaker 1: have to overplay him. They know if they don't, they're
- 12:47Speaker 1: in trouble. And yes, you're right when you say we've
- 12:51Speaker 1: had a number of top white outs over the years.
- 12:54Speaker 1: I think probably that is a position where we've had
- 12:59Speaker 1: more than our share of great players. The Bengals Booth
- 13:02Speaker 1: podcast is brought to you by Bengals Picks and Ultimate Bengals.

- 13:09Speaker 1: for grabs. Find both inside the Bengals app. After AJ
- 13:14Speaker 1: announced his retirement, I asked on Twitter if there were
- 13:17Speaker 1: any highlights or memories that you wanted me to include
- 13:21Speaker 1: in this podcast. I got a response from at Governor
- 13:24Speaker 1: Chief asking if I ever did a fun fact segment
- 13:28Speaker 1: with Aj. The answer is yes. Green's rookie year was
- 13:33Speaker 1: my rookie year. As the Bengals Radio Voice, and that
- 13:36Speaker 1: weekly segment was still in its infancy. It was only
- 13:39Speaker 1: about five minutes long back then. It's typically twice that
- 13:43Speaker 1: long now. But here's twenty three year old AJ Green
- 13:49Speaker 1: time for fantastic Funch Facts with eight reel Jeremiah Green.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Anybody in your life that ushes your real name sometime?
- 13:58Speaker 1: My parents about it. Nobody else did. They used to
- 14:01Speaker 1: drop it on you when you got in trouble. Yeah,
- 14:03Speaker 1: my mom did. All right, your South Carolina kid, tell
- 14:07Speaker 1: us a little bit about where you're from. I'm from
- 14:09Speaker 1: this little country place called Vigil, South Carolina. No nothing
- 14:14Speaker 1: out there. This is a country area. And you just
- 14:19Speaker 1: went to Serville High School and that's what I played football.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Speaking of Summerville High School, your high school football coach
- 14:26Speaker 1: is the winningest high school football coach, John McKissick. Still
- 14:30Speaker 1: going strong at eighty five, Is that right? Yeah? Eighty
- 14:32Speaker 1: five is unbelievable. But he's still active. He's still coaches,
- 14:37Speaker 1: So this is unbelievable. What was he like? Uh, you know,
- 14:41Speaker 1: he was really outgoing, always talking, you know, trying to coach.
- 14:45Speaker 1: You know, he got rained over a couple of times
- 14:46Speaker 1: on the sideline. So I don't know how he's still coaching,
- 14:48Speaker 1: but he's a great guy. I read somewhere that he's
- 14:51Speaker 1: retired one number in his fifty nine years or sixty
- 14:54Speaker 1: years of high school coaching. It's yours. That must mean
- 14:57Speaker 1: a lot. Yeah, definitely, man, it's coming from him. You know,
- 15:00Speaker 1: he seems a lot of great that that came through
- 15:02Speaker 1: that program. And you know, I would just honor so
- 15:05Speaker 1: tenth grade high school, he verbally commit to Georgia. What
- 15:08Speaker 1: was it about the Bulldogs that enthralled yourself? It was
- 15:12Speaker 1: just coach Raking, you know, just preaching to be a
- 15:15Speaker 1: better man after the life for football, and I felt
- 15:17Speaker 1: I could go anywhere and play and uh but just
- 15:20Speaker 1: give me that that that that like growing up and
- 15:23Speaker 1: being a man and being on my own, and I
- 15:25Speaker 1: felt like coach was the best man for that. So
- 15:28Speaker 1: after you did that, a bunch of big time coaches
- 15:30Speaker 1: from other schools kept coming around trying to get you
- 15:32Speaker 1: to change your mind. Right, Yeah, definitely, But you know
- 15:35Speaker 1: I stayed firm, and uh, you know I held it through.
- 15:37Speaker 1: Who is your childhood hero? Um? You know my g
- 15:40Speaker 1: got to be my parents, you know, just they always
- 15:42Speaker 1: pushed high work and uh, you know, always said nothing
- 15:46Speaker 1: as easy, Always have to work for, gotta be my parents,
- 15:48Speaker 1: did you have an athletic hero, somebody who's poster was
- 15:51Speaker 1: on your bedroom wall? Anything like that? Part of Michael Jordan,
- 15:54Speaker 1: you know, because he always strives to stuff to be great.
- 15:57Speaker 1: And that's what I'm trying to do. All right. So
- 15:59Speaker 1: you're the number four we're picking this year's draft. Obviously,
- 16:02Speaker 1: whoever that is is well compensated. What what's your splurge?
- 16:06Speaker 1: What do you spend money on? Um? You know, I'm
- 16:09Speaker 1: just not really a big spender, but a little clothing shoes,
- 16:12Speaker 1: that's my passion, even though I don't even get dressed
- 16:14Speaker 1: dressed that much, but uh, you know, just just knowledge
- 16:16Speaker 1: that I note that I have them is always good.
- 16:18Speaker 1: So a close horse. Yeah, clothing shoes, all right. I
- 16:22Speaker 1: read it somewhere that you were on a juggling team
- 16:25Speaker 1: as a kid. Yeah. What do they do in the
- 16:27Speaker 1: juggling team? You know, you just juggle a different item
- 16:30Speaker 1: like balls, scars, all kind of stuff like that. And
- 16:33Speaker 1: we used to perform at halftimes a basketball game, so
- 16:36Speaker 1: kind of fun. How many things could you get in
- 16:38Speaker 1: the air? Four four? And then then after sixth grade,
- 16:41Speaker 1: I'm like, man, it's not cool no more, so I
- 16:43Speaker 1: just quick AJ's it like riding a bike? Could you
- 16:46Speaker 1: still juggle if we had four objects here right now?
- 16:49Speaker 1: Oh yeah, definitely. Uh Gatoray did like a little special
- 16:52Speaker 1: on me with a little juggling stuff, so I still
- 16:55Speaker 1: got it this radio, so I'm not going to ask
- 16:57Speaker 1: you too, So you're off the hook for now. Anyway.
- 16:58Speaker 1: Have you had any other jobs other than professional athlete? Oh? Yeah,
- 17:03Speaker 1: I had one job at the store, like department store
- 17:06Speaker 1: like Stephen Bears and I used to work as xpies,
- 17:08Speaker 1: but my coach made me quit of both, I mean
- 17:11Speaker 1: both jobs because he said I have my whole life
- 17:13Speaker 1: to work, so you know, I just focused on athletics. Well,
- 17:16Speaker 1: they sold shoes there, so you were able to indulge
- 17:19Speaker 1: your habit probably for for liking shoes, right, yeah, a
- 17:21Speaker 1: little bit for like two weeks. All right, what NFL
- 17:25Speaker 1: star do you look forward to meeting? That'd be probably
- 17:29Speaker 1: this scene pay Manny. You know, you know, just watching
- 17:32Speaker 1: the whole my whole life growing up, and you know,
- 17:34Speaker 1: just now I'm here like playing on the same field,
- 17:37Speaker 1: well not playing on the same field but in the NFL,
- 17:39Speaker 1: but up Pay many when you have Matt big time
- 17:42Speaker 1: people over the last year or two, are you a
- 17:44Speaker 1: little bit awestruck? Are you over that? No? I think
- 17:47Speaker 1: I'm over that now, So all right, fair enough. When
- 17:50Speaker 1: you're not at work, what do you enjoy doing? Probably
- 17:52Speaker 1: to sleeping and playing video games? How late the sleep
- 17:56Speaker 1: when you can? I mean, if you've got the freedom
- 17:58Speaker 1: to sleep, how late will you go? Two o'clock, three o'clock?
- 18:02Speaker 1: You know no longer an option in the NFL. Exactly
- 18:08Speaker 1: that you're lacking means and need to get your wrist
- 18:09Speaker 1: when camp. All right, You're off the hot seat. Thanks,
- 18:11Speaker 1: thank you. As I told Aj in a text this week,
- 18:15Speaker 1: it was truly a privilege to broadcast his games for
- 18:18Speaker 1: nine seasons, and I look forward to the day when
- 18:20Speaker 1: he enters the Bengals Ring of Honor. The Bengals Booth
- 18:24Speaker 1: Podcast is brought to you by Alta Fiber, future proof

- 18:35Speaker 1: Elevate your connection with Alta Fiber. Now time for my
- 18:39Speaker 1: conversation with Bengals dot Com editor and Hall of Fame
- 18:43Speaker 1: voter Jeff Butch Hobson, Jeff. It is a night for
- 18:48Speaker 1: the Bengals organization in Bengals fans to rejoices. Ken Riley
- 18:51Speaker 1: is officially going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame
- 18:53Speaker 1: in August. You are one of forty nine people on
- 18:56Speaker 1: the selection committee. What ultimately got the rattler over the hump?
- 19:01Speaker 1: I think when they expanded the committee, when they expanded
- 19:05Speaker 1: the uh senior nominations from one to three, only one
- 19:12Speaker 1: senior was able to get in a year. It was
- 19:14Speaker 1: just too tight of a call. I mean, they tell
- 19:16Speaker 1: you about those uh those meetings where you know, you
- 19:20Speaker 1: got to come out with one senior and there would
- 19:22Speaker 1: be fifteen. There'll be a list of fifteen guys. And
- 19:25Speaker 1: Ron Borge's the great Ron Borgers of a long time
- 19:29Speaker 1: pro football writer. Would you know, he'd tell you they
- 19:31Speaker 1: when we when we left the room, that were Hall
- 19:34Speaker 1: of famers strewn about the floor and U so opening
- 19:38Speaker 1: it up. And also I think there's been a great
- 19:41Speaker 1: effort on the ground to help get him in. To
- 19:44Speaker 1: be aware, to be aware of those sixty five interceptions.
- 19:48Speaker 1: You know can point to Fingle, Jim Jim Foster, you know,
- 19:52Speaker 1: with his trips to Canton and you can look at
- 19:56Speaker 1: just at the sixty five interceptions himself that that I
- 19:59Speaker 1: think that that held up over time. I mean that
- 20:02Speaker 1: it's amazing how how great that number is when you
- 20:05Speaker 1: consider that since Kenny retired in nineteen eighty three, only
- 20:10Speaker 1: one player that came into the league after that had
- 20:15Speaker 1: had more than him. It was Rod Woods. And that
- 20:18Speaker 1: I think ultimately expanding the committee, the you know, expanding
- 20:23Speaker 1: and changing and revamping the senior guidelines and the efforts
- 20:28Speaker 1: of Bengals fans and the sixty five picks didn't. So
- 20:34Speaker 1: that process you're talking about for selecting senior candidates guys
- 20:37Speaker 1: whose careers ended at least twenty five years ago, that
- 20:41Speaker 1: changed last year. What does that mean for Ken Anderson
- 20:44Speaker 1: moving forward? To be thinking, well, I think it's there
- 20:47Speaker 1: were two things that came out of the first. You know,
- 20:49Speaker 1: its stunning that he didn't, you know, go as far
- 20:52Speaker 1: as he did, I thought. But I do think that
- 20:54Speaker 1: that just like for Kenny Riley, I do think that
- 20:56Speaker 1: opens it up for Kenny Anderson. But when I don't know,
- 21:00Speaker 1: you know, I think it always kind of they always
- 21:03Speaker 1: kind of hurt each other's candidacy a little bit because
- 21:05Speaker 1: they're both Bengals and both played in the same era.
- 21:08Speaker 1: I don't don't and I don't think that helped either one.
- 21:10Speaker 1: And uh, but hopefully with the expanded you know, with
- 21:14Speaker 1: the expanded seniors list, you gotta believe that Kenny Kenny
- 21:18Speaker 1: Anderson gets in sooner rather than later. We're visiting with
- 21:22Speaker 1: Bengals dot Com editor Jeff Butch Hobson. Willie Anderson has
- 21:25Speaker 1: been a finalist in the Modern Era category in each
- 21:28Speaker 1: the last two years. Unfortunately, Big Willie did not get
- 21:31Speaker 1: the nod this year. For those who don't support him,
- 21:35Speaker 1: do they say, why no, you know, it's it's it's
- 21:40Speaker 1: a great question. That's a great way to approach it.
- 21:43Speaker 1: And because nobody ever tells you, nobody ever tells you that,
- 21:48Speaker 1: but you can only you only have to kind of say,
- 21:51Speaker 1: you know, well, he played on he played on Bengals
- 21:55Speaker 1: teams that weren't very good, and he played right tackle.
- 21:57Speaker 1: But that just doesn't hold water anymore because, first of all, people,
- 22:02Speaker 1: you know, he certainly won more games than Joe Thomas.
- 22:05Speaker 1: You know, he was on more contenders than Joe Thomas,
- 22:08Speaker 1: and he blocked and he blocked, and he can't say, well,
- 22:12Speaker 1: he was a right tackle, but he blocked as many
- 22:14Speaker 1: great players as Joe Thomas did. So those arguments really
- 22:17Speaker 1: don't wash when you put in guys like a guy
- 22:20Speaker 1: like Joe Thomas. So I think, I think fine, I think,
- 22:23Speaker 1: you know, he's a he's certainly a Hall of he
- 22:25Speaker 1: saw a certainly Hall of Fame worthy. But I don't
- 22:28Speaker 1: think he's you know, he's certainly, Uh, Willie is just
- 22:32Speaker 1: as accomplished, if not more than he is. But why
- 22:37Speaker 1: does a guy like that get in quicker than Willie does?
- 22:40Speaker 1: And we could probably do a dissertation on this at
- 22:44Speaker 1: a new house schoolhoarding we ever back for an alumni weekend.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Although behind like yellow at us, we may be too
- 22:51Speaker 1: old to be yelled at. He likes the yell at
- 22:53Speaker 1: yearn you guys. But uh, I think will he's another
- 22:56Speaker 1: guy who's going to get in. And it's but I
- 22:59Speaker 1: don't know when, you know, will he be like Vasselli?
- 23:02Speaker 1: Where you know Tony Vasselli was on the ballots in
- 23:05Speaker 1: the final six times before he made it. I certainly
- 23:08Speaker 1: hope it's not that it doesn't take that long. But
- 23:12Speaker 1: the key is to get him in the room, keep
- 23:14Speaker 1: getting him in the room for those finals. Where his
- 23:16Speaker 1: case is presented and discussed, and like you, at some point,
- 23:20Speaker 1: you know the voters are going to look at each
- 23:21Speaker 1: other and say, you know, yeah, there's there's no reason,
- 23:24Speaker 1: you know, there's I know there are no really marks
- 23:29Speaker 1: on the no category. Let's talk about a guy who's
- 23:33Speaker 1: not in the room. Corey Dillon. He's twentieth in NFL
- 23:37Speaker 1: history and career rushing yards. He ranks ahead of many
- 23:40Speaker 1: Hall of Fame running backs, including O. J. Simpson or o'campbell,
- 23:44Speaker 1: Terrell Davis, etc. He has two of the top seventeen
- 23:48Speaker 1: single game performances in NFL history. He was the leading
- 23:52Speaker 1: rusher on a Super Bowl champion in New England. There
- 23:55Speaker 1: seems to be very little Hall of Fame buzz. Why
- 24:01Speaker 1: I you know, it's uh could be my fault, just
- 24:04Speaker 1: trying to get one guy in take so much air
- 24:06Speaker 1: out of the room. But you know, you know, I
- 24:09Speaker 1: always stay Corey's case, and I think Paul Dayer Junior
- 24:14Speaker 1: has done a nice job stayed in, stayed in Corey's case,
- 24:18Speaker 1: and the guys who have gone in, I know you
- 24:20Speaker 1: know the names you hear Fred Taylor will put up
- 24:23Speaker 1: Corey's career against Fred Taylor it's it's it's keep arguing.
- 24:26Speaker 1: In many ways it's better because he's got a ring
- 24:29Speaker 1: and he had a better you know, he had a
- 24:31Speaker 1: better you know, his season in New England was I
- 24:33Speaker 1: think better than anything that Fred did. But you know
- 24:37Speaker 1: that that that case that I think the position too.
- 24:39Speaker 1: It's hard to it's it's it's a I mean, in
- 24:43Speaker 1: this day and age, you've got to be unbelievable in
- 24:45Speaker 1: there with all the I mean there's a there's a
- 24:47Speaker 1: look at the backlog of receivers. Not one receiver made
- 24:50Speaker 1: it into the hall this year. Uh, you know you've
- 24:52Speaker 1: got a backup of three guys that have worthy cases.
- 24:56Speaker 1: But you know those are the guys that get the
- 24:58Speaker 1: ink and a running back from the turn of the century.
- 25:02Speaker 1: How to get traction And I'm not sure, I'm not
- 25:06Speaker 1: sure how to how that can be, you know, outside
- 25:11Speaker 1: of a six million dollars public relations, let's I don't
- 25:16Speaker 1: know how to how to get it in the voters
- 25:18Speaker 1: minds that Corey Jones certainly should it, certainly should be
- 25:23Speaker 1: in the room. Certainly should be And I would say
- 25:25Speaker 1: if you look at the backs that have been there recently,
- 25:28Speaker 1: he should be in. Can it is not your fault
- 25:31Speaker 1: for the record, and I do want to give you
- 25:33Speaker 1: some credit because every NFL team has one media member
- 25:37Speaker 1: on the committee, so you have helped make the case
- 25:40Speaker 1: for Ken Riley, Willie Anderson, Ken Anderson and others. What
- 25:44Speaker 1: does Ken Riley's selection mean to you personally? I think
- 25:50Speaker 1: I've cried about three times since I found out that
- 25:53Speaker 1: he was that he was in, and it's I know
- 25:57Speaker 1: what it means to his family, for one thing, And
- 26:00Speaker 1: I know and Kenny and I would talk about it
- 26:01Speaker 1: a lot, you know, and he was and it meant
- 26:04Speaker 1: a lot, and and it meant a lot to him,
- 26:06Speaker 1: it didn't, you know, like like his son said, it's
- 26:08Speaker 1: not something that he thought about all the time. But
- 26:10Speaker 1: when you know, a guy like me would ask him invariably,
- 26:15Speaker 1: which I asked him a lot, he would talk about it.
- 26:18Speaker 1: He would talk about it, and he would it was
- 26:21Speaker 1: on his mind, but it was him on his mind
- 26:23Speaker 1: during voting. And so I it means a lot to
- 26:26Speaker 1: me because of how much it meant to him and
- 26:28Speaker 1: his family. And I just felt happy that I could
- 26:32Speaker 1: have a hand in it, that I could write about
- 26:33Speaker 1: him because I because ultimately Kenny get in because of
- 26:36Speaker 1: his case. You know, I just feel so happy for
- 26:39Speaker 1: I feel I feel like his wife does. Who's bitter.
- 26:42Speaker 1: It's bitter sweet because he's not here. So it's a
- 26:45Speaker 1: if for me. It's a range of emotions from it's
- 26:47Speaker 1: it's you cry for a lot of different reasons, and
- 26:50Speaker 1: one is that he's in and the other reason is
- 26:52Speaker 1: he's not here. It's pretty emotional, but I think I
- 26:55Speaker 1: got all my crying out of the way. So when
- 26:57Speaker 1: I was able to hit the button to say that
- 26:59Speaker 1: he was in, I was in a I was in
- 27:01Speaker 1: a good frame of mind. All right, let's change subjects.
- 27:05Speaker 1: AJ Green retired this wait. As far as I can tell,
- 27:08Speaker 1: you're the only reporter he has talked to so far.
- 27:11Speaker 1: Described that conversation just like any other UH talk with
- 27:16Speaker 1: as you would call him, Adriel Jeremiah Green. I think
- 27:20Speaker 1: I think you called that I pretty close to sixty
- 27:24Speaker 1: five times, maybe forty because your first game was his
- 27:28Speaker 1: first game, correct, and he was the same, And he
- 27:31Speaker 1: was he was the same as as you would expect.
- 27:34Speaker 1: He was very matter of fact. He didn't sound relieved
- 27:39Speaker 1: or anything like that. You know, sometimes you talk to
- 27:42Speaker 1: these guys after they make a decision, and UH, you
- 27:45Speaker 1: can tell the loads off. But AJ, that's why he
- 27:47Speaker 1: was such a great player and such a great locker
- 27:49Speaker 1: room guy. He was just cool and easy. You know,
- 27:52Speaker 1: he was going he's going on to that. I don't
- 27:54Speaker 1: think it was an easy decision for him. You know,
- 27:57Speaker 1: he's a he's a passionate guy. I think that's the
- 28:00Speaker 1: his his his personality kind of kind of belize the
- 28:05Speaker 1: passion that simmers in him. So but I found him
- 28:09Speaker 1: to be as gracious as ever. You know, I uh,
- 28:12Speaker 1: if it had me, I would have been grousing about
- 28:14Speaker 1: the injuries that cost me three one thousand yard scenes.
- 28:18Speaker 1: But he didn't see it like that. He's sorry as
- 28:20Speaker 1: he was, he was blessed to do what he did,
- 28:22Speaker 1: which I think shows you what kind of human being
- 28:25Speaker 1: he is. So I was, you know, he was He's
- 28:27Speaker 1: excited about being able to, you know, do do all
- 28:31Speaker 1: the things that he hasn't been able to do with
- 28:32Speaker 1: his family. And I sounded like he's interested in delving
- 28:36Speaker 1: into investments and stuff and I'm sure he'll be successful
- 28:39Speaker 1: with that. So it was just like talking to him
- 28:41Speaker 1: after a game board. He was like, uh, only was
- 28:43Speaker 1: like talking to him after a win, because you know,
- 28:46Speaker 1: after a loss, he wouldn't. He could get him right
- 28:49Speaker 1: at his locker, but he would still be dressed, and
- 28:51Speaker 1: he'd be few, and you know, he'd be kind of
- 28:54Speaker 1: he'd be mad, but he but he talked, but he
- 28:56Speaker 1: would if it was a loss. He wanted to get
- 28:58Speaker 1: it over with in his uniform. But I think I
- 29:00Speaker 1: could envision Aj he was. He was, he was out
- 29:04Speaker 1: of uniform and enjoying a win. It was great hearing
- 29:08Speaker 1: him or reading in your story that he's excited to
- 29:11Speaker 1: openly root for the Bengals again, and so is his
- 29:13Speaker 1: wife Miranda. Yeah, you know, as you know this is
- 29:17Speaker 1: a the Greens aren't the only ones that are taken
- 29:20Speaker 1: with this team, you know. And the fact that you
- 29:22Speaker 1: know we forget AJ played on that, I mean AJ
- 29:25Speaker 1: played with those guys, you know. I mean, I still
- 29:28Speaker 1: think and maybe I'm the biggest homer of all time.
- 29:31Speaker 1: I'm the last guy in the world that thinks Joseph Osai,
- 29:34Speaker 1: I guess was hit, you know, should have been flagged
- 29:36Speaker 1: for that play. But I definitely think that AJ Green
- 29:40Speaker 1: should not have been called for offensive pass interference and
- 29:42Speaker 1: Joe Burrow's first start, so that would have been a
- 29:45Speaker 1: great that that that would have been a great trivia
- 29:47Speaker 1: question because you got to feel like Joe is going
- 29:50Speaker 1: to be around for, you know, a long time, and
- 29:53Speaker 1: AJ Green is that other era, you know, and so
- 29:57Speaker 1: he kind of played into both errors, you know. And
- 29:59Speaker 1: I I think he helped those guys, I know, you
- 30:01Speaker 1: know Tie Higgins. I went back. I looked at some
- 30:03Speaker 1: of the stuff that Tee Higgins said when you know
- 30:07Speaker 1: when AJ was there, how much he helped T and uh,
- 30:10Speaker 1: you know, and he's still close to Tyler Boyd. So
- 30:13Speaker 1: it's he's rooting for guys that he knows, you know.
- 30:15Speaker 1: And uh, he got a great relationship with Mike Brown,
- 30:19Speaker 1: you know. And I joked with him, I said, you know,
- 30:23Speaker 1: probably you probably didn't text Mike probably and he said, now,
- 30:26Speaker 1: he goes, I don't. I don't think he looked at
- 30:28Speaker 1: his cell phone. I said, well, you can expect the
- 30:30Speaker 1: handwritten letter at some point, and he agreed with that.
- 30:34Speaker 1: He will be up on that ring of honor someday,
- 30:37Speaker 1: there's no question about it. We're visiting with Jeff Hobson,
- 30:40Speaker 1: who's in Arizona for Super Bowl Week. Your fellow media
- 30:44Speaker 1: members there know that you cover the Bengals. What are
- 30:47Speaker 1: they asking you about this week? What do they want
- 30:49Speaker 1: to know about this team? Why aren't we there? I mean,
- 30:52Speaker 1: I can't tell you how many I can't tell you
- 30:54Speaker 1: how many people have you know, I always wanted my
- 30:57Speaker 1: Bengals garb and uh. So you know, they say, oh,
- 31:01Speaker 1: you should have been there. I thought you were going
- 31:03Speaker 1: to be here. You got a good team, You'll be back,
- 31:06Speaker 1: you know. Uh. And that's just passing in the hallway.
- 31:09Speaker 1: But when you talk to guys like Jim Miller of
- 31:13Speaker 1: Serious Radio, Alex Marveez of serious Radio, Howard ballser who's
- 31:18Speaker 1: who's a Hall of Fame voter Um Rappaport. If you
- 31:21Speaker 1: get Rappaport off the phone for a little bit, you
- 31:24Speaker 1: know they're they're, uh, you know, they know this team,
- 31:28Speaker 1: the team is going to be in it, you know.
- 31:31Speaker 1: So you know, they all want to know about borrows,
- 31:33Speaker 1: you know, contract or something. And I you know, I said,
- 31:35Speaker 1: that's that's to me, that's a I was talking to
- 31:38Speaker 1: Steve Servey about this. Uh. They got the great writer
- 31:42Speaker 1: from the Post who, by the way, once wrote the
- 31:45Speaker 1: greatest line in Super Bowl history when the When the
- 31:48Speaker 1: Packers got back to the Super Bowl of the nineties,
- 31:50Speaker 1: the first word of his of his column was, I
- 31:53Speaker 1: am standing in the house Vince Lombardi used to live
- 31:56Speaker 1: in Oky. He went today, he went to Vince Lombardi's
- 31:59Speaker 1: old house. So Servey's back for another Super Bowl and
- 32:01Speaker 1: he was talking about borrowing the boys and about that
- 32:04Speaker 1: went over the Jets and back in September, and he
- 32:07Speaker 1: was talk you know, asking about the contract and how
- 32:11Speaker 1: are they going to keep these guys? That's another topic
- 32:13Speaker 1: two is how how are they going to keep all
- 32:15Speaker 1: these guys even asked have they even asked even as
- 32:18Speaker 1: to match Chase. But I said to Servey, I said,
- 32:21Speaker 1: you know this, I said, Mike Brown made Boomera scias
- 32:23Speaker 1: In the highest paid guy in the league twice. He
- 32:26Speaker 1: made Constin Palm of the highest paid guy in the
- 32:28Speaker 1: league once. So you know this is he's He's even
- 32:33Speaker 1: down this road a few times. So I do think
- 32:36Speaker 1: that there's a little bit of a misconception out there
- 32:38Speaker 1: nationally at least and maybe even somewhat locally, that this
- 32:41Speaker 1: is something that has to happen. Now. Yeah, the truth
- 32:45Speaker 1: is Joe's under contract really for two more years, assuming
- 32:48Speaker 1: that the Bengals would pick up a fifth year option
- 32:51Speaker 1: if they had two and obviously they would, but this
- 32:53Speaker 1: is the first year that they can extend the deal
- 32:57Speaker 1: and there's some salary cap benefits long term if they do.
- 33:01Speaker 1: What's your gout to tell you? You think it gets
- 33:03Speaker 1: done this offseason? Well, that's that's their history, you know,
- 33:08Speaker 1: I can only look at the history. Uh what they
- 33:11Speaker 1: did Dalton in I think the camp of twenty fourteen, right,
- 33:16Speaker 1: which was when they had the first I think they
- 33:18Speaker 1: had the first chance to do it, right, that was
- 33:19Speaker 1: after his first three seasons. Uh, they did Boom, you know,
- 33:23Speaker 1: they did they would do back in the day, they
- 33:25Speaker 1: would do Boomer quietly, but they did Carson. Remember they
- 33:28Speaker 1: did Carson. He hadn't even finished his first season yet
- 33:32Speaker 1: and they did it. So he finished his third season.
- 33:36Speaker 1: Well it was yeah, you correct, that's Curry. You are right, sir, Right,
- 33:38Speaker 1: that's right, thank you. Yeah, history would tell you that
- 33:41Speaker 1: they do it sooner rather than later. I would imagine
- 33:44Speaker 1: this is the same case now because he's gonna he's
- 33:47Speaker 1: gonna set the structure, he's gonna set what you do
- 33:50Speaker 1: with other guys, and you know he's gonna he's not
- 33:52Speaker 1: want to go out, He's not gonna want to go
- 33:54Speaker 1: out there and play with the Lerman twins. Although they
- 33:57Speaker 1: had a great they had a great run together an Ath,
- 34:00Speaker 1: but you know he's going to have other guys with him,
- 34:02Speaker 1: so you know it's, uh, you gotta get t figured out.
- 34:05Speaker 1: You gotta get Logan Wilson figured out. They're both they're
- 34:07Speaker 1: also both viligible to be talked to. And then of
- 34:10Speaker 1: course in the distance you have Jamar and you know, defensively,
- 34:14Speaker 1: certainly von Bell and Jesse bates her up and you know,
- 34:18Speaker 1: so you know, you would think, if you if he's
- 34:21Speaker 1: going to set the salary structure, you'd probably like to
- 34:23Speaker 1: get that. Not as soon as possible, but I'm sure
- 34:26Speaker 1: they could still do business while they're talking to him,
- 34:29Speaker 1: but history would tell you sooner rather than later. You
- 34:33Speaker 1: referenced Jamar Chase being out there in Arizona, and he
- 34:36Speaker 1: was on the NFL network on Wednesday and when asked
- 34:39Speaker 1: about Burrows contract. Here's what Jamar said, Joe wants to
- 34:42Speaker 1: set up his contract to keep some of his weapons
- 34:45Speaker 1: around him. That's the quote. It sounds to me like
- 34:49Speaker 1: they've talked about it. You would think, knowing their friendship
- 34:52Speaker 1: and their history that they have, how significant do you
- 34:57Speaker 1: think that comment was from Jamar. You know, I know,
- 35:00Speaker 1: I it's like you said, you can only go by
- 35:02Speaker 1: how close they are. It's also not surprising, you know,
- 35:05Speaker 1: I think knowing noing Joe, I think he's a pretty calculator.
- 35:09Speaker 1: You know, he's a pretty uh I don't want to
- 35:11Speaker 1: say calculated, but he's a he's a clear minded guy. Yeah,
- 35:16Speaker 1: he's pretty focused. He know what he wants to do,
- 35:19Speaker 1: and yeah, right, it's I mean, every time he talks,
- 35:21Speaker 1: he talks about with him. You know, he's not talking
- 35:23Speaker 1: about Passerini and completion percentage and all that stuff. He's
- 35:27Speaker 1: talking about wins and so yes, I agree. I mean
- 35:32Speaker 1: you would have to say that it sounds like Joe.
- 35:36Speaker 1: So Joe's not due to be a free agent right away.
- 35:40Speaker 1: But you mentioned some of the guys that are Jesse Bates,
- 35:44Speaker 1: Von Bell plus Jermaine Pratt, Eli Apple Paydon Hurst. Those
- 35:48Speaker 1: are five starters who are going to be free agents.
- 35:50Speaker 1: I think most of us assume Jesse's moving on, It's
- 35:53Speaker 1: been trending that way for a couple of years now.
- 35:56Speaker 1: Of the others, who do you think is most likely
- 35:59Speaker 1: to return? Great question? I mean, I uh, you look
- 36:04Speaker 1: at von Bell and I mean, he's uh, very comfortable
- 36:08Speaker 1: in the system, great in the locker room. I know
- 36:11Speaker 1: he's got some ties around the league, you know, around
- 36:13Speaker 1: the league with other you know, teams and the guys
- 36:16Speaker 1: who were up for jobs. But he's a guy I
- 36:18Speaker 1: would think he seems, uh you know, he wants to
- 36:21Speaker 1: win too. And I you can't you can't help but
- 36:25Speaker 1: see the letter of number nine there for these guys,
- 36:27Speaker 1: you know, and I think v I think Von's one
- 36:29Speaker 1: of these guys. Any guy who comes into the weight
- 36:31Speaker 1: room every day at six and the morning that tells
- 36:34Speaker 1: me he's not he's he's running in for just a paycheck,
- 36:39Speaker 1: you know what I mean. So he's a guy I
- 36:41Speaker 1: could see, you know, sticking here because you know he
- 36:44Speaker 1: wants to win, and uh, you know he's he was
- 36:48Speaker 1: a winner on the Saints too, and what were the
- 36:50Speaker 1: two common denominators, Drew Breese and Borrow, So that you know,
- 36:54Speaker 1: I could I could see I could see vareun staying,
- 36:56Speaker 1: you know what I mean. I that would be a guy.
- 36:59Speaker 1: I mean, but you know I wouldn't give I wouldn't
- 37:01Speaker 1: give short shrift to Pratt either. I think Pratt's pretty
- 37:04Speaker 1: comfortable here. His good friend b J Hills on the team.
- 37:08Speaker 1: He's really come on under their you know, he's really
- 37:10Speaker 1: the last two years under the lou He's really he's
- 37:12Speaker 1: really come on. So you know that, you know, But
- 37:16Speaker 1: what what would he want to be? You know, I
- 37:19Speaker 1: think Wilson and Pratt are seen as two guys. Would
- 37:22Speaker 1: he want to go someplace where he wants to be
- 37:24Speaker 1: the guy? I don't you know who knows? I mean,
- 37:26Speaker 1: but I think everything's on the table with these guys.
- 37:29Speaker 1: I think it has had to say one guy is
- 37:31Speaker 1: more likely than the other because I think Borrow kind
- 37:35Speaker 1: of changes everything. And the success Borrow in the success
- 37:39Speaker 1: of the last two years is you know, hard to
- 37:42Speaker 1: know what guys are thinking, and hard to know where
- 37:44Speaker 1: they are in their lives, you know, and what they
- 37:45Speaker 1: want to accomplish at this stage in their lives. And
- 37:48Speaker 1: each guy is different. But I think, you know, I
- 37:51Speaker 1: think if a lot of guys stay that would that
- 37:54Speaker 1: would not be surprising because they know they got a shot.
- 37:57Speaker 1: I think they believe and they've lived it and they've
- 37:59Speaker 1: seen it. They a chance every year to get here.
- 38:04Speaker 1: The factor that you never know at this point is
- 38:07Speaker 1: what other teams might offer. I mean, nobody expected CJ.
- 38:10Speaker 1: Zama to get the deal that he got last year.
- 38:13Speaker 1: So I know that hayden Hurst wants to be back,
- 38:16Speaker 1: But will another team go crazy and make an offer
- 38:20Speaker 1: that that just simply does not make sense for the Bengals.
- 38:22Speaker 1: You don't know, no, right, you don't know, and you
- 38:25Speaker 1: don't know what a guy's thinking. We would a guy
- 38:27Speaker 1: take less to stay? What a guy does a guy
- 38:29Speaker 1: want more as a guy and needing more? I think
- 38:32Speaker 1: keeping a team together, I think is that's that's just
- 38:34Speaker 1: going to be the high. But I mean, they've done
- 38:35Speaker 1: such a good job putting this one together. It's going
- 38:38Speaker 1: to be probably even tougher to keep it together, you know.
- 38:42Speaker 1: And but I think we'll have a lot of help.
- 38:44Speaker 1: Joe's gonna have give him a lot of help and
- 38:45Speaker 1: a regat And I think, you know, I think Zach
- 38:47Speaker 1: Taylor's built a great You have to say, what he's
- 38:51Speaker 1: done a hell of a job in that locker room.
- 38:53Speaker 1: And if you didn't think so, you thought so after
- 38:55Speaker 1: DJ Hills stood next to Joseph the sci after that
- 38:59Speaker 1: conference champion, the game that shows you what they've got
- 39:02Speaker 1: and so uh, it makes this It makes this locker
- 39:06Speaker 1: room quite a lure, I think in free agency. A
- 39:09Speaker 1: couple more topics as we record this. Luanna Roumo is
- 39:13Speaker 1: reportedly one of two finalists for the areas could be
- 39:16Speaker 1: right around the corner from you. He could be right
- 39:17Speaker 1: around the corner from here or in Arizona. Yeah, yea,
- 39:20Speaker 1: So he's supposedly one of two finalists for that job.
- 39:23Speaker 1: Brian Callahan is apparently still on the lengthy list of
- 39:27Speaker 1: guys who are being considered by the Indianapolis Colts. If
- 39:30Speaker 1: either or both leave, are the replacements in house? I
- 39:36Speaker 1: would think so. I think that was part of the
- 39:39Speaker 1: deal when Mike, when they when the when the ownership
- 39:44Speaker 1: opted to go for a offensive head coach. I think
- 39:48Speaker 1: the thinking was, you know, they were looking at points
- 39:51Speaker 1: like this where they would get coaches, you know, where
- 39:53Speaker 1: other coaches would leave, and I think they felt like,
- 39:56Speaker 1: you get to have a system. You get to have
- 39:58Speaker 1: at least on one side of the all. You have
- 40:00Speaker 1: to have a system that the head coach has and
- 40:03Speaker 1: uh so za za this is Zack's often so uh
- 40:07Speaker 1: certain you don't want guys like Callahan and Tooy Walters
- 40:11Speaker 1: is up for a job. The wide receiver's goes Dan
- 40:13Speaker 1: picture the quarterbacks coach. He's up for a job. He's
- 40:16Speaker 1: already had two interviews in Tampa. But Zach the guy
- 40:20Speaker 1: ultimately zat zact system. He's still here. He's not going anywhere. So,
- 40:24Speaker 1: I mean, that's a key thing on that side of
- 40:26Speaker 1: the ball. And you know, defensively, it's an interesting call.
- 40:29Speaker 1: You know, James Betcher worked with lou in New York.
- 40:34Speaker 1: James Betcher is a two time defensive coordinator. His best
- 40:38Speaker 1: you know, he had three top ten defenses in Arizona, uh,
- 40:43Speaker 1: you know, several years ago. So you know, he would
- 40:46Speaker 1: seem to be you know, would he be a candidate.
- 40:49Speaker 1: He has done the job before, so you know, I
- 40:53Speaker 1: I and they, you know they and I think Zach
- 40:55Speaker 1: and Duke and Mike have done a great job with
- 40:58Speaker 1: coaching continuity. I mean and that you know. I mean,
- 41:01Speaker 1: you know, Mike, You've talked to Mike enough. He is
- 41:06Speaker 1: rock ribbed in his belief that you have to have consistency,
- 41:09Speaker 1: particularly in coaching. And I think he's been proven correct
- 41:14Speaker 1: down through the years. So you know, I think those
- 41:17Speaker 1: you know, those in the house guys get an extra
- 41:19Speaker 1: long look. I think in Cincinnati Mike puts it differently
- 41:24Speaker 1: than anybody else I've ever heard, as you would expect
- 41:27Speaker 1: when we're all singing from the same hymnal. It's hard.
- 41:33Speaker 1: It's hard to change from the year to year. So
- 41:36Speaker 1: that's a classic way of Mike talking about coaching continuity. Yeah,
- 41:40Speaker 1: and that's he just didn't come up with that either,
- 41:42Speaker 1: you know. And I think he's seen that, he's seen
- 41:45Speaker 1: that playout. He's sorr he saw it on his dad's
- 41:47Speaker 1: back when you know, I mean Paul Brown's first stabs.
- 41:51Speaker 1: I know it was a different time, in a different era,
- 41:53Speaker 1: but they barely changed, you know, in the in the
- 41:56Speaker 1: in the when he was coaching the team for the
- 41:57Speaker 1: first eight years. So you're in Arizona for the Super Bowl.
- 42:02Speaker 1: You've been around players from both teams, coaches from both teams.
- 42:06Speaker 1: Do you have a rooting interest? Do you have a
- 42:07Speaker 1: feel for who you think is gonna win? You know,
- 42:11Speaker 1: I hate I had a nice conversation with the former
- 42:13Speaker 1: Bengals coach. We'll get to these notes later after the
- 42:17Speaker 1: Hall of Fame stuff, but old running back coach Jamal
- 42:20Speaker 1: Singleton is out here. Is the assistant head coach for
- 42:23Speaker 1: the Eagles, really really shot guy, and they the Eagles
- 42:28Speaker 1: do a great job running the ball. Did a little
- 42:30Speaker 1: did a little story with Lane Johnson and got to
- 42:33Speaker 1: spend some time with him, who's a big Willie Anderson guy,
- 42:36Speaker 1: and talk to their offensive line coach a little bit,
- 42:40Speaker 1: Jeff Stoutmond. And they're very impressive upfront, you know. And
- 42:44Speaker 1: I mean, you know, the Chiefs are the Chiefs are
- 42:46Speaker 1: a great team. You know what, We've had four classic games.
- 42:48Speaker 1: It's unbelievable you think about that. I mean, every game
- 42:50Speaker 1: has been a classic, but this Eagles punch, it's a
- 42:54Speaker 1: they're intriguing you after being around a little. But I mean,
- 42:58Speaker 1: and I just look at how they run the ball.
- 43:00Speaker 1: And Willie Anderson was talking about that too. What he
- 43:02Speaker 1: was saying when they blocked the run, their picture perfect.
- 43:05Speaker 1: They're combo blocking is like right out of the textbook.
- 43:07Speaker 1: So you know, I hate to get back to the
- 43:10Speaker 1: running game, but that's they They could they could take
- 43:13Speaker 1: over this game in the run game, and we might
- 43:16Speaker 1: not see much, you know, the plan might be not
- 43:18Speaker 1: to see much of Patrick. You know, that's that's you know,
- 43:21Speaker 1: as you know, I mean, obviously, if she's met on
- 43:24Speaker 1: the field, he can't beat you. But I think and
- 43:27Speaker 1: the Eagles are so good on the other side of
- 43:29Speaker 1: the ball too. I just they're so good on both
- 43:33Speaker 1: sides of the ball. It's hard to me to see
- 43:35Speaker 1: them losing a game like this. Well, I hope you're right,
- 43:39Speaker 1: because I'm rude to the Eagles. My fellow Southwestern Central
- 43:44Speaker 1: High school graduate, Nick Siriani, right, his ni Fran was
- 43:49Speaker 1: my high school science teacher. So this is kind of cool.
- 43:52Speaker 1: Wow about that? Um yeah, that's uh uh And there
- 44:00Speaker 1: you're kind of guys, you kind of like a little
- 44:01Speaker 1: bit like Hassan Reddick is kind of like the eli
- 44:03Speaker 1: apple of that team a little bit. He's got a
- 44:05Speaker 1: second he got a second chance, and he's got sixteen sacks,
- 44:09Speaker 1: and um, you know, I I think that, uh, this,
- 44:15Speaker 1: this the Andy Reid thing is what a great thing.
- 44:18Speaker 1: I mean, uh, what a story that is. I mean,
- 44:21Speaker 1: he's hugging some of those Eagles, He's hugging some of
- 44:23Speaker 1: those Eagles guys on the on the stage that were
- 44:26Speaker 1: there when he when he was there, you know, and
- 44:28Speaker 1: so it's, uh yeah, I think this, uh, this one
- 44:32Speaker 1: is It's gonna be tough to watch though, because he's
- 44:35Speaker 1: just gonna think, you know, how close the Bengals were
- 44:38Speaker 1: to get there, you know, and uh, I would have
- 44:41Speaker 1: liked the match up with the with the Eagles, it
- 44:43Speaker 1: would have been their their their pass rush would have
- 44:46Speaker 1: been tough. But I think that uh, you know, Joe
- 44:48Speaker 1: could have gone after that secondary, you know, And I
- 44:51Speaker 1: think our defense would have been a nice match for
- 44:53Speaker 1: you know, we're tough to run the ball on, you know.
- 44:56Speaker 1: And uh, I think Hurts might have you know, I
- 44:58Speaker 1: think Lou might have had a few things for Hurt.
- 45:00Speaker 1: So we'll just have to we'll just have to kind
- 45:03Speaker 1: of do a fantasy game on the side. I guess
- 45:06Speaker 1: we're both still in mourning. They probably would have had
- 45:08Speaker 1: Kappa back, they might have had with Jonah back, so
- 45:11Speaker 1: that would have been helped as well. But hey, here's
- 45:13Speaker 1: the good news. Of the fourteen teams that made the playoffs,
- 45:16Speaker 1: they had the youngest roster or it's not going anywhere.
- 45:20Speaker 1: The Bengals aren't going anywhere, So hopefully next year we'll
- 45:25Speaker 1: be still in the hunt. At this point of the
- 45:27Speaker 1: Super Bowl week, well, and the great thing FORRDY is
- 45:30Speaker 1: they've got the youngest roster and they got one of
- 45:33Speaker 1: the most After the Eagles, they might have the most
- 45:35Speaker 1: postseason games even though they're so young, you know, which
- 45:39Speaker 1: is that's a great combination. Well, as I said off
- 45:43Speaker 1: the top, it is a night for Bengals fans to
- 45:45Speaker 1: celebrate Ken Riley officially going into the Hall of Fame.
- 45:49Speaker 1: You had a lot to do with that and also
- 45:50Speaker 1: getting Willie Anderson in the room. So congratulations, thank you
- 45:54Speaker 1: on your for your efforts and look forward to seeing
- 45:57Speaker 1: you when you get back to town forty. That's very
- 45:59Speaker 1: kind of you. You know, it's kind of a family
- 46:01Speaker 1: deal here. The Rileys are all are all out here
- 46:04Speaker 1: and it's a great thing to see. And I know
- 46:06Speaker 1: Carry Hobson's listening on our podcast, and one day as
- 46:10Speaker 1: a family, we're going to go up and see Kenny
- 46:12Speaker 1: Riley's bust and as a family and we'll we'll be
- 46:18Speaker 1: up there, and it was a bit or his family
- 46:20Speaker 1: and hopefully Willie will be going back up to visit.
- 46:23Speaker 1: Willie and Isaac and Corey and you know, Joe and
- 46:29Speaker 1: Jamar if we live that long, which would be nice.
- 46:32Speaker 1: That's going to do it for this episode of the
