Latest / Foul Territory / Fair Territory: Pirates sign Marcell Ozuna, Red Sox acquire Caleb Durbin, Ken's 5 Spring Storylines
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome everyone to the Monday edition of Fair Territory Spring
- 0:05Speaker 1: Training Pitchers and Catchers Report this week, and it seems
- 0:09Speaker 1: that teams and agents are waking up and realizing it's
- 0:14Speaker 1: go time. Two big moves this morning. We're gonna get
- 0:17Speaker 1: into both of them. We're also gonna get into my
- 0:19Speaker 1: top five springs training storylines as well as a review
- 0:23Speaker 1: of Scott Boris's off season. But let's start with the trade.
- 0:27Speaker 1: The big trade this morning between the Red Sox and
- 0:29Speaker 1: the Brewers. I want to go through the names first
- 0:32Speaker 1: and then we'll talk about the meetings for each team.
- 0:34Speaker 1: It's a very interesting trade on a lot of levels.
- 0:37Speaker 1: The Red Sox, of course, have been looking for a
- 0:39Speaker 1: third baseman or another infielder the entire off season after
- 0:44Speaker 1: losing Alex Bregman. It appears that Caleb Durban, the principal
- 0:48Speaker 1: return in this trade, will be that guy. But they
- 0:51Speaker 1: also acquired some other infielders too, Andrew Monasterio, Anthony Sigler.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Anthony Sigler had some moments for them last year, as
- 0:57Speaker 1: did Monasterio. Durban is a guy they acquired from the
- 1:00Speaker 1: Yankees in the Devin Williams trade that they like an
- 1:03Speaker 1: awful lot or liked an awful lot sty'll do. I'm
- 1:06Speaker 1: sure they also get a competitive balance b pick Kyle Harrison,
- 1:10Speaker 1: who really was expendable for them. Because of the pitchers
- 1:13Speaker 1: that they've acquired this offseason, we're talking about Ranger Suarez,
- 1:17Speaker 1: Johanno Viedo, Sonny Gray, there's not much room for him.
- 1:20Speaker 1: They've got some prospects as well, and then David Hamilton
- 1:24Speaker 1: expendable after the signing of Isaiah Kaina Phileffer. The minor
- 1:28Speaker 1: league deal for Brendan Rodgers and Shane Jrohan yet another
- 1:32Speaker 1: of their better pitching prospects. Not their top, but they're
- 1:35Speaker 1: better pitching prospects that they've traded this winter. That list
- 1:40Speaker 1: includes Richard Fitz, David Sandlin, now Kyle Harrison, Brandon Clark,
- 1:45Speaker 1: and Hunter Dobbins. So what they've done is basically trade
- 1:49Speaker 1: off a bunch of guys who would be in their
- 1:52Speaker 1: Triple A rotation most likely depth for the major league club,
- 1:55Speaker 1: for players who will help their major league team. These
- 1:59Speaker 1: are pieces that help them get a variety of different players,
- 2:02Speaker 1: including Wilson Contraras. So the Red Sox now it's not
- 2:07Speaker 1: Alex Breckman, it's not eazac Parades. It's not a guy
- 2:11Speaker 1: really with Caleb durban who hits for power, but he
- 2:14Speaker 1: is a useful player, a good player, and I would
- 2:17Speaker 1: expect that the Red Sox would play him at third,
- 2:20Speaker 1: although they've wanted to play Marcelo Meyer at third, so
- 2:22Speaker 1: maybe they played Durbin at second. He has some experience there.
- 2:26Speaker 1: But either way, it's an interesting trade for both clubs.
- 2:30Speaker 1: I don't know what the Brewers are going to do
- 2:32Speaker 1: at third base now. They conceivably could trade for ezac Parades.
- 2:37Speaker 1: More likely they patch it together wait for some of
- 2:39Speaker 1: their prospects. Jet Williams is an up the middle player,
- 2:43Speaker 1: not a third baseman. They could play him at third.
- 2:45Speaker 1: They do this all the time. Cooper Pratt another player
- 2:48Speaker 1: in their system, highly regarded but didn't really hit last
- 2:51Speaker 1: year at double A. So we go forward with the
- 2:54Speaker 1: Brewers and the Red Sox. The Pirates this morning also
- 2:58Speaker 1: with a major move, at least from their perspective. One
- 3:01Speaker 1: year twelve million dollars from Marcel Azuna, free agent designated
- 3:05Speaker 1: hitter and Marcella Zuna for them will fill obviously the
- 3:09Speaker 1: role that Andrew McCutchen largely filled last year, and beyond that,
- 3:13Speaker 1: he's going to be I'm sure the everyday DH. This
- 3:17Speaker 1: likely signals the end of the McCutcheon era in Pittsburgh.
- 3:21Speaker 1: I don't see a place for him on their roster. Now.
- 3:24Speaker 1: What the Pirates have tried to do is upgrade their offense,
- 3:28Speaker 1: and they've done it for the most part. Ryan O'Hearn,
- 3:31Speaker 1: Brandon Lowe, Marcella Zuna. Those are three competent major league hitters.
- 3:36Speaker 1: They also got the Password from Boston. He's a top prospect,
- 3:39Speaker 1: or at least a good prospect that maybe can fit
- 3:42Speaker 1: into their mix as well. They should be a better
- 3:45Speaker 1: offensive club. We know they can pitch. We know they
- 3:48Speaker 1: have one of the best young groups of starting pitchers
- 3:51Speaker 1: in baseball. So the Pirates, they have had an offseason
- 3:55Speaker 1: that they kind of promised in some ways. They didn't
- 3:58Speaker 1: get all the guys they wanted, of course, they were
- 4:00Speaker 1: outbid for a number of them. But are they better
- 4:03Speaker 1: than they were at the end of the last season.
- 4:06Speaker 1: I don't think there's any question about that. All Right, Pirates,
- 4:09Speaker 1: Red Sox Brewers. Let's go to the top five spring storylines.
- 4:14Speaker 1: I guess I will start at the top, and the top,
- 4:18Speaker 1: of course, is going to be the back to back
- 4:19Speaker 1: World Series champions. The Los Angeles Dodgers, and what they
- 4:24Speaker 1: will do and how they will prepare for a three
- 4:26Speaker 1: pet Now, can they do that? Of course they can
- 4:29Speaker 1: do that. They've added two major pieces this offseason. I'm
- 4:33Speaker 1: talking about Kyle Tucker, I'm talking about Edwin Diaz. But
- 4:36Speaker 1: as we've already heard from them, they're going to slow
- 4:39Speaker 1: play Blake Snell and they're coming off a second straight
- 4:43Speaker 1: deep run into the postseason. Yamamoto is going to be
- 4:46Speaker 1: in the WBC. Otani is not going to pitch in
- 4:48Speaker 1: the WBC. He'll probably be on a somewhat limited schedule
- 4:52Speaker 1: the whole season, probably pitch once a week as he
- 4:55Speaker 1: has done in the past. And the question I have
- 4:58Speaker 1: with the Dodgers is what about all these guys, these
- 5:01Speaker 1: pitchers coming back coming off a deep run into the
- 5:04Speaker 1: postseason in which they were ridden hard. Remember four starters
- 5:09Speaker 1: pitched in Game seven of the World Series. Otani, Imamoto,
- 5:13Speaker 1: Glass now and who am I missing? Oh Blake Snell.
- 5:17Speaker 1: I just mentioned him. So we'll see what the Dodgers,
- 5:20Speaker 1: But yes, they're going to be a team to watch
- 5:22Speaker 1: for sure. Number two on my Spring storylines, the new
- 5:26Speaker 1: look Mets. We've talked about them the entire offseason. Alonso
- 5:30Speaker 1: has gone, mc neil has gone, Nimo has gone, Edwin
- 5:33Speaker 1: Diaz has gone. But they have brought in a huge
- 5:36Speaker 1: number of players, an entire new infield. Except for Francisco Lindor,
- 5:41Speaker 1: I'm talking about Bobashett at third. I'm talking about Marcus
- 5:45Speaker 1: Simeon at second, and Juanney Polanco at first. Luis Robert
- 5:48Speaker 1: Junior will be in center field. They've also added to
- 5:51Speaker 1: their pitching staff Freddy Peralta, Devin Williams, Luke Weaver in relief.
- 5:56Speaker 1: It's going to be an interesting spring for them, just
- 5:58Speaker 1: to see all these pieces fit together, other to see
- 6:01Speaker 1: Baschett adapt to third base, Polanco the first. I don't
- 6:04Speaker 1: expect it to be much of a problem for either,
- 6:06Speaker 1: but the new look Mets are another big spring storyline.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Third on my list moves still to be made. Now,
- 6:14Speaker 1: I had Marcela Zona on that list. Today, I had
- 6:17Speaker 1: the Red Sox needing an infielder on that list. But
- 6:20Speaker 1: we will still see transactions and trades and signings throughout
- 6:24Speaker 1: the spring. Zach Gallen the biggest free agent starting pitcher remaining.
- 6:29Speaker 1: We've got Lucas Giolito still out there, Chris Bassett, Jose Cantana,
- 6:33Speaker 1: Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, and a number of teams one
- 6:38Speaker 1: agent estimates and many as ten teams that still need
- 6:42Speaker 1: starting pitching. So there are going to be some free
- 6:44Speaker 1: agent starting pitchers moving in the next few weeks. I'm
- 6:48Speaker 1: sure we will see some other trades as well. San
- 6:51Speaker 1: Diego Baltimore are among the teams that need starters. I'm
- 6:56Speaker 1: missing some, but there are a number of others. Houston
- 6:59Speaker 1: still has to resolve what's going on with is Zac
- 7:01Speaker 1: Parades and Christian Walker in their infield as well. They've
- 7:04Speaker 1: got one too many, all right. Fourth on the list
- 7:07Speaker 1: the dawning of the Tony Vitello era in San Francisco.
- 7:11Speaker 1: This is a fascinating move, a fascinating hiring by the Giants.
- 7:15Speaker 1: It's going to be something we talk about, not just
- 7:17Speaker 1: in spring training but all season. The first college coach
- 7:21Speaker 1: hired by a major league team to manage in I
- 7:24Speaker 1: don't know over a century it's happened before, but it
- 7:27Speaker 1: hasn't happened in a quite a long time. Vytello is
- 7:31Speaker 1: a guy who had a great reputation at Tennessee. Kind
- 7:34Speaker 1: of fiery, kind of got into it with people at times,
- 7:37Speaker 1: the opposition. But he's gonna have to tone it down
- 7:40Speaker 1: obviously in the majors. He knows it. He has two
- 7:43Speaker 1: former managers on his coaching staff, Jase Tinkler and Ron Washington,
- 7:47Speaker 1: coming back into the game. So Tony Vitello will be
- 7:51Speaker 1: one to watch all spring. All right, we keep it
- 7:54Speaker 1: going here, the final thing, the final spring training storyline
- 7:57Speaker 1: and maybe the biggest the WBCA see ramp up and
- 8:01Speaker 1: the WBC. Now, obviously players are already in camps who
- 8:06Speaker 1: will be participating in the World Baseball Classic. Saw some
- 8:09Speaker 1: video yesterday of Clay Holmes throwing off a mound in
- 8:12Speaker 1: Port Saint Lucie. He's there early because he is part
- 8:15Speaker 1: of Team USA. We're going to see the ramp up.
- 8:18Speaker 1: We're going to see the tournament in early March. Japan,
- 8:21Speaker 1: the Dominican Republic, and the United States, all with powerhouse clubs.
- 8:25Speaker 1: It's going to be a terrific tournament. I'm quite certain
- 8:28Speaker 1: of that. It is, as I said previously, the best
- 8:31Speaker 1: US team we've seen. So looking forward to the WBC
- 8:35Speaker 1: for sure. I'll be working it for Fox, and that
- 8:38Speaker 1: is it for the spring training storylines. We will be
- 8:41Speaker 1: back with the Inside Dish and the review of Scott
- 8:45Speaker 1: Bors's offseason right after this. Ajay.

- 9:52Speaker 1: Tie out for the Inside Dish, the part of the
- 9:57Speaker 1: show where I talk about I don't know something, I've written,
- 10:00Speaker 1: trend in the game, something else entirely, And today I
- 10:03Speaker 1: want to go through Scott Boris's offseason because of course
- 10:06Speaker 1: he is the premier agent in the game. He has
- 10:08Speaker 1: the most big name clients. A number of big name
- 10:12Speaker 1: players did quite well this offseason, and a number of
- 10:15Speaker 1: his clients did as well. Now, before we get into it,
- 10:19Speaker 1: I'm always amused when I see comments or on Twitter
- 10:22Speaker 1: that Ken, you're a shill for Boris twenty nineteen, and
- 10:26Speaker 1: he had a rough offseason, at least by his standards.
- 10:29Speaker 1: He had Bryce Harper, Don Yaes and Kakoochie and Zach Britton,
- 10:32Speaker 1: but Dallas Kichel didn't sign. He had kind of a
- 10:35Speaker 1: down off season for him by his standards. And I
- 10:38Speaker 1: wrote about it and it was critical, and after that,
- 10:41Speaker 1: Scott Boris did not talk to me for a year.
- 10:44Speaker 1: A couple of years ago, I was the one who
- 10:46Speaker 1: coined the phrase the Boris Four for the four free
- 10:49Speaker 1: agents who were kind of lingering into spring training they
- 10:52Speaker 1: all ended up doing rather well, except for Jordan Montgomery.
- 10:56Speaker 1: So over the years, I've gotten up and down with
- 10:59Speaker 1: Scott Boris, as I've gone up and down with a
- 11:01Speaker 1: number of agents. In fact, two prominent agents right now
- 11:04Speaker 1: are not talking to me. It's been quite a while
- 11:06Speaker 1: for both of them. And that's the way it goes
- 11:08Speaker 1: in this business. I write what I think is proper
- 11:12Speaker 1: at the time. I write my opinions, and sometimes people
- 11:15Speaker 1: like them, sometimes people don't. Sometimes readers like them, sometimes
- 11:19Speaker 1: they don't. In any case, here we go with the
- 11:22Speaker 1: review of Boris's offseason. Now at the top, Dylan Cees,
- 11:26Speaker 1: Alex Bregman, Pete Alonzo, Cody Bellinger. These guys all did
- 11:31Speaker 1: rather well. Cease seven years two hundred and ten million
- 11:35Speaker 1: with the Toronto Blue Jays, Bregman five years one hundred
- 11:38Speaker 1: and seventy five million with the Chicago Cubs. Now, both
- 11:41Speaker 1: those players had deferrals in their deals, so the net
- 11:45Speaker 1: present value of both is pretty good amount below where
- 11:51Speaker 1: the actual numbers reported numbers were. Dylan Cease was two
- 11:54Speaker 1: hundred and ten million, the net present value is more
- 11:56Speaker 1: like one to eighty nine Bregman one hundred and seventy
- 11:59Speaker 1: five million, the net present value one fifty four regardless,
- 12:03Speaker 1: both did very well. Both beat projections by guys like
- 12:06Speaker 1: Tim Britton of the Athletic and Bregman. You remember he
- 12:10Speaker 1: signed that big deal with Boston last year, stayed there
- 12:13Speaker 1: one year, and that two was heavily deferred. But he
- 12:17Speaker 1: ends up beating what the Tigers offered the year before,
- 12:20Speaker 1: which was six years, one hundred and seventy one point
- 12:23Speaker 1: five million. That's a good outcome for Bregman, there's no
- 12:26Speaker 1: question about it. Now. Bellinger didn't quite get the length
- 12:30Speaker 1: that maybe was expected. Remember he was looking for seven years.
- 12:34Speaker 1: He only got only five. But his AAV was higher
- 12:38Speaker 1: than most people thought it would be in that one
- 12:40Speaker 1: hundred and sixty two point five million dollar deal. I
- 12:42Speaker 1: believe it's the fourth highest AAV ever for an outfielder.
- 12:46Speaker 1: That's pretty good. Pete Alonso did great. Five years, one
- 12:50Speaker 1: hundred and fifty five million with the Baltimore Orioles far
- 12:53Speaker 1: exceeded projections. A lot of people thought he was going
- 12:56Speaker 1: to get stuck if the Mets weren't there for him,
- 12:58Speaker 1: but he got a huge deal from the Oriels. Ranger Suarez,
- 13:02Speaker 1: another Boris free agent, some people thought he'd get six years,
- 13:05Speaker 1: ends up with five, but a very healthy deal at
- 13:08Speaker 1: one hundred and thirty million. The two Japanese clients that
- 13:12Speaker 1: Boris had this offseason, Kazuma Okamoto and Tatsuya in my now,
- 13:17Speaker 1: both those guys like Murakami in Chicago, he's represented by Excel.
- 13:22Speaker 1: They did not do as well as people thought. There
- 13:25Speaker 1: were big deals predicted for really all the Japanese free agents,
- 13:29Speaker 1: and none of them got major deals. They did fine,
- 13:31Speaker 1: but they didn't get the monster deals that some expected.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Okamoto four years sixty million with the Toronto Blue Jays,
- 13:39Speaker 1: and then Emma went to the Astros three years fifty
- 13:43Speaker 1: four million. Finally, Hashan Kim one year twenty million with
- 13:46Speaker 1: the Atlanta Braves. Perhaps he could have gotten a longer deal,
- 13:50Speaker 1: but he's hurt all the time. He's hurt again, so
- 13:53Speaker 1: he did Oka too. On balance, we're talking about almost
- 13:57Speaker 1: a billion dollars of contracts, with Zach Gallon still to come,
- 14:02Speaker 1: and with REYE. Hoskins still to come. I don't expect
- 14:05Speaker 1: Hoskins to do particularly well, but Gallon might, and ultimately
- 14:09Speaker 1: this looks like a strong offseason for Scott Boris. Now,
- 14:13Speaker 1: I don't want to overlook any of the other players
- 14:16Speaker 1: who did really well. Kyle Tucker Excel represents him. He
- 14:20Speaker 1: got a great deal four years, two hundred and forty
- 14:23Speaker 1: million from the Dodgers, and there were a number of others.
- 14:25Speaker 1: The Edwin Diaz deal he's represented by Wasserman, did well
- 14:29Speaker 1: to go to the Dodgers in addition to Tucker, and
- 14:32Speaker 1: I'm missing a few, but there were a lot of
- 14:34Speaker 1: good deals signed this offseason, including just recently from ber Valdez,
- 14:39Speaker 1: represented by Octagon. See, I'm taking care of everybody here.
- 14:42Speaker 1: He got a five year, one hundred and fifteen i'm sorry,
- 14:45Speaker 1: three year, one hundred and fifteen point five million dollar
- 14:48Speaker 1: deal from the Detroit Tigers. So most of the free agents,
- 14:52Speaker 1: the big ones, did really well this offseason, and I
- 14:56Speaker 1: don't know that anyone's going to have much of a complaint.
- 14:59Speaker 1: I don't know that any one other than Zach Gallon
- 15:01Speaker 1: really got caught in a tough spot. Now I'm talking
- 15:05Speaker 1: about the top guys. There are still a number of
- 15:07Speaker 1: free agents out there, and you're going to see in
- 15:09Speaker 1: the weeks ahead, most likely a number of guys signed
- 15:13Speaker 1: for maybe less than we would have thought, and maybe
- 15:15Speaker 1: some of these starting pitchers fit into that mix, and
- 15:18Speaker 1: it seems to me that the clubs that need starting
- 15:20Speaker 1: pitching I mentioned the Padres and Orioles earlier, there are
- 15:24Speaker 1: a whole bunch of others. These teams are waiting. They're
- 15:27Speaker 1: trying to squeeze these pitchers and trying to get the
- 15:30Speaker 1: best deals possible before they round out their rosters. We'll
- 15:34Speaker 1: see how it all plays out. But every year it's
- 15:36Speaker 1: the same. Every year we see guys at the end
- 15:39Speaker 1: not doing maybe as well as we would expect. So
- 15:44Speaker 1: that's it. The review of Boris's offseason. I don't think
- 15:47Speaker 1: by any standard you can say this was not a
- 15:50Speaker 1: good offseason. You see the total right there, nine to
- 15:52Speaker 1: sixty six point five million. If he gets Gallon thirty
- 15:57Speaker 1: three point five million, then he's got a billion dollars deals. Now,
- 16:00Speaker 1: I know some is deferred, yes, but that is still
- 16:03Speaker 1: a strong group of players. It's a strong group of deals.
- 16:06Speaker 1: And in many cases over the last couple of years,
- 16:10Speaker 1: some of those short term things that he has done
- 16:13Speaker 1: for Bregman, for Matt Chapman, from Blake Snell, they've wound
- 16:17Speaker 1: up in the end turning out really well. So that
- 16:20Speaker 1: is it. We will go and take a break now
- 16:23Speaker 1: and come back with Grill and Ken right after this bet.
- 16:27Speaker 5: I'm JM account holders today. How about in any sport
- 16:30Speaker 5: parlay boost token you can score a bigger payout if
- 16:33Speaker 5: your wager with that token. Hits tokens can be used
- 16:35Speaker 5: on parlays and on same game parlays. Gambling problem or concerned,
- 16:39Speaker 5: there's help called one eight hundred gambler.
- 16:48Speaker 1: All right, Time now for Grill and Ken, the part
- 16:49Speaker 1: of the show where I answer your questions. Let's get
- 16:52Speaker 1: right to them. I'm sure you've got some good ones today.
- 16:54Speaker 1: First one comes from that guy. I don't even know
- 16:58Speaker 1: what this is, that's his hand whatever. His question is
- 17:01Speaker 1: good though, or her question if you had to guess,
- 17:04Speaker 1: are the Pirates out on paradies? Now? If I had
- 17:07Speaker 1: to guess the answer to that is yes, they are out.
- 17:09Speaker 1: And the reason is that they probably are at their
- 17:15Speaker 1: payroll limit or close to it, and parades is not
- 17:18Speaker 1: necessarily that costly. A guy I don't have a salary
- 17:21Speaker 1: or projected salary for twenty twenty six in front of me,
- 17:24Speaker 1: but he would add to that, now, should the pirates
- 17:28Speaker 1: be out on paradies, they absolutely should not. They should
- 17:30Speaker 1: go get parades if they get him to play third base.
- 17:34Speaker 1: To me, this is a wildcard contender. They might even
- 17:37Speaker 1: be that right now. But I just don't know whether
- 17:41Speaker 1: after giving Marcela zun a twelve million for this year,
- 17:44Speaker 1: that they have enough money left in their budget. And
- 17:48Speaker 1: that's Bob Notting's budget, it's not mine, it's not maybe
- 17:51Speaker 1: even Ben Sherrington's. But I don't know if they have
- 17:53Speaker 1: enough money left to go and make a trade for parades.
- 17:56Speaker 1: I'm not sure the stomach for that is there too.
- 17:58Speaker 1: They've made or traded some other young pitching in this
- 18:01Speaker 1: season already or this offseason, and I'm not quite sure
- 18:04Speaker 1: they want to do that much more. But parades still
- 18:08Speaker 1: would be a great fit for them. Next question, This
- 18:12Speaker 1: one comes from harmand is amazing one of our best questioners.
- 18:15Speaker 1: He says, do you believe the Red Sox will choose
- 18:17Speaker 1: one of Monasteria or Sigler and package it with the
- 18:20Speaker 1: compy pick and send it to the Astros for parades.
- 18:24Speaker 1: I don't see the Red Sox doing that. It's possible
- 18:27Speaker 1: this move today was the precursor to a trade for
- 18:31Speaker 1: parades entirely possible, and as we reported yesterday, Chandler Rome
- 18:35Speaker 1: and I. The Red Sox, Cardinals, and Astros were discussing
- 18:39Speaker 1: a three team trade in which Brendan Donovan would have
- 18:42Speaker 1: gone to the Astros, Ezach Parades to the Red Sox,
- 18:44Speaker 1: prospects to the Cardinals, So it's possible that it could
- 18:49Speaker 1: all work out like that. I'm sorry, the compy pick
- 18:51Speaker 1: did go to the Red Sox, so we will see
- 18:54Speaker 1: how this all plays. I'm not exactly sure, but you
- 18:58Speaker 1: can trade the compy pick. Certainly you can do some
- 19:01Speaker 1: things and still maybe satisfy the Astros. So I don't
- 19:05Speaker 1: know that I would rule it out. Good question there
- 19:07Speaker 1: from Armand is amazing. Let's go to the next one.
- 19:11Speaker 1: This one comes from Andrew Tagara. When does Nick Castillanos
- 19:14Speaker 1: get released? I don't know the answer to that question.
- 19:18Speaker 1: They are the Phillies intent on doing something with him,
- 19:21Speaker 1: and tomorrow is the day I believe that teams have
- 19:25Speaker 1: to set their sixty man or put players on the
- 19:28Speaker 1: sixty man il to clear forty man roster spots. Perhaps
- 19:33Speaker 1: then it becomes more likely that the Phillies do it,
- 19:36Speaker 1: or perhaps they simply keep waiting. I'm sure they want
- 19:39Speaker 1: to trade him, and even if it means eating almost
- 19:43Speaker 1: all of the money, but they haven't been able to
- 19:45Speaker 1: do that so far, so we'll see how that all
- 19:48Speaker 1: plays out. If it indeed plays in Castillanos's favor, where
- 19:53Speaker 1: he winds up in a place that wants him rather
- 19:55Speaker 1: than getting released and having to find a job as
- 19:58Speaker 1: a free agent. Not as easy as, of course, when
- 20:01Speaker 1: a team trades for you. All right, next question, This
- 20:05Speaker 1: one comes from Ryan, who asks have you heard anything
- 20:07Speaker 1: about Renievo to the Snakes Luis Renheevo. I've not heard
- 20:11Speaker 1: anything about that. I assume it would make some sense,
- 20:16Speaker 1: but they're pretty set in their infield. If you look
- 20:19Speaker 1: at what they have, it's Arnatto at third, it's Perdomo
- 20:22Speaker 1: at short, it's Martee at second, and Pevin Smith at first.
- 20:26Speaker 1: So I'm not exactly sure where Luis Renifo would fit
- 20:30Speaker 1: in for them. Anything is possible, and they do need,
- 20:34Speaker 1: after what they did over the weekend or recent trade,
- 20:38Speaker 1: a little bit more infield depth. They need another guy
- 20:41Speaker 1: because they traded to the Orioles Blaize Alexander, So yes,
- 20:46Speaker 1: they are looking for another infielder to be that kind
- 20:48Speaker 1: of guy. They've got Tim Tawa, They've got Jordan Lawler,
- 20:52Speaker 1: but I would expect that Renifo is kind of beyond
- 20:56Speaker 1: or a little bit better than what they're looking for.
- 20:58Speaker 1: Might be wrong about that good name. All right, here
- 21:01Speaker 1: we go, Let's go to the next one. Someone comes
- 21:03Speaker 1: from Ryan who asked, what's next for Cutch? Yeah, when
- 21:07Speaker 1: a team searching for a right handed hitter like the
- 21:09Speaker 1: Cardinals be a fit as a veteran leader or an
- 21:12Speaker 1: extremely young squad, what's next for Cutch is a very
- 21:16Speaker 1: good question, and I don't know the answer. I assume
- 21:19Speaker 1: he still wants to keep playing. He's a proud guy,
- 21:22Speaker 1: and rightly proud by the way. He's had an amazing
- 21:25Speaker 1: career and, as I pointed out in my column last week,
- 21:28Speaker 1: was still productive last season. He's not the Cutch of old,
- 21:31Speaker 1: but he is a player who can fill a role
- 21:34Speaker 1: for a team. The Pirates simply wanted more offense. They
- 21:38Speaker 1: wanted more than he was able to give or could give,
- 21:41Speaker 1: and they feel Azuna can get back to being the
- 21:43Speaker 1: guy he was twenty three and twenty four when he
- 21:45Speaker 1: was really a monster, and in the first part of
- 21:49Speaker 1: twenty five two in April of twenty five, he was
- 21:51Speaker 1: really good. So that's why they made the decision they did.
- 21:55Speaker 1: I don't know that Cutch can go anywhere or would
- 21:58Speaker 1: be willing to go anywhere, but can he be a
- 22:01Speaker 1: useful major leaguer? I still believe that. I still believe
- 22:04Speaker 1: he wants to play, and maybe at this point he
- 22:07Speaker 1: wants to prove a point going to the Cardinals, a
- 22:09Speaker 1: team in the division might be right up his alley.
- 22:13Speaker 1: All right. Next question, this comes from Mike, who says
- 22:16Speaker 1: the Brewers losing Peralta, Durbin, coins, and meares while the
- 22:20Speaker 1: Cubs ad Bregman and Cabrera. Are the Cubs the biggest
- 22:23Speaker 1: offseason winner? Or should I be worried about the Brewers
- 22:26Speaker 1: somehow turning Zurpa and Harrison into Cy Young. Great question
- 22:30Speaker 1: for Mike, and yes you should be worried. Of course
- 22:32Speaker 1: you should be worried. The Brewers do this all the time.
- 22:36Speaker 1: They do it every year. They make these trades, they
- 22:40Speaker 1: lose players. And we're going back to hater, right, hater
- 22:43Speaker 1: Corbyn burns Now, Freddy Peralta and guys like me, We
- 22:47Speaker 1: say the Brewers they can't sustain it, they can't keep going,
- 22:50Speaker 1: and they do so. Yes, I would expect that they're
- 22:54Speaker 1: going to get something maybe out of Harrison and Zurpa
- 22:56Speaker 1: that we don't expect, and I would expect that they're
- 23:00Speaker 1: going to be quite a competitive team this year. Now
- 23:03Speaker 1: they like Durban a whole lot, Monasterio and Sigler. As
- 23:06Speaker 1: I said earlier, they filled roles for the Brewers, no
- 23:09Speaker 1: question about that. They were a team kind of of
- 23:12Speaker 1: rule players. But at the same time, I'm not sure
- 23:17Speaker 1: they're quite as strong as they would like to be,
- 23:20Speaker 1: and it's going to be interesting to see if they
- 23:21Speaker 1: have another move in them. I'm sure they do for
- 23:24Speaker 1: some kind of third base option, but at the same time,
- 23:28Speaker 1: they're going to figure it out. They always seem to
- 23:30Speaker 1: figure it out. They've got a great pitching program that
- 23:33Speaker 1: of course helps them compete every year. So yes, I
- 23:37Speaker 1: do expect the Brewers to be competitive, but you could
- 23:40Speaker 1: argue that, yeah, the Cubs on paper are clearly superior.
- 23:44Speaker 1: All right, last question before we get going. This one
- 23:47Speaker 1: comes from Ryan Blum, who asked, have you heard anything
- 23:49Speaker 1: regarding Joe Ryan or Pablo Lopez as far as trades go.
- 23:53Speaker 1: I would assume they're going to begin the season with
- 23:56Speaker 1: the Twins and potentially be dangled at the deadline. Again.
- 23:59Speaker 1: Ryan you've nailed that. I would expect that You're absolutely right.
- 24:03Speaker 1: The Twins with their new regime taking over now Derek
- 24:07Speaker 1: Falvey is out, They've got a new head of the operation,
- 24:12Speaker 1: Tom Pohlad. Tom Poulad has talked about wanting to compete
- 24:16Speaker 1: this season. They haven't spent the money you would think
- 24:18Speaker 1: for a team that wants to compete, but that is
- 24:21Speaker 1: what they are saying. So they're gonna go into the season.
- 24:23Speaker 1: They're gonna try to compete now in the Al Central,
- 24:27Speaker 1: even with the Tigers as strong as they are, they
- 24:29Speaker 1: might be able to compete. But at the same time,
- 24:32Speaker 1: I would expect that at the deadline they're going to
- 24:35Speaker 1: face tough decisions. The new GM, Jeremy zol is going
- 24:38Speaker 1: to have to look at this and say, Okay, where
- 24:40Speaker 1: are we Should we trade Ryan, should we trade Lopez?
- 24:43Speaker 1: And should we trade Byron Buxton? All right, I want
- 24:46Speaker 1: to thank everyone for watching and for listening. Foul Territory
- 24:49Speaker 1: coming up at one o'clock Eastern. Jim Bowden, Noah Hailes,
- 24:52Speaker 1: and Ken Davidoff joined Aj Prazinski, Eric Kratz and Scott
- 24:56Speaker 1: Braun while they here already, and I'm sure there's more
- 25:00Speaker 1: to come, have a great week everyone,
