- 0:10Hello, America. Welcome to the Juneto podcast, where we promote the practical
- 0:14applications of critical thinking and bold creativity.
- 0:18I'm your host, Edgar Mills. Thank you for.
- 0:28Hello, good people. Welcome back to the Junto podcast. Thank you so much for staying with me.
- 0:34So some of you may know, I don't know, I was never really a big sports fanatic.
- 0:39I'm, I don't follow, I don't follow sports that much. I don't track other dudes
- 0:44statistics or their careers.
- 0:47I never cared much for the, like the organizational drama.
- 0:52You know, there's always drama in the, MLB and NFL.
- 0:59And I don't really, honestly, man,
- 1:03to the woes of the millionaire players,
- 1:06you know, they're not making enough millions or the billionaire club owners
- 1:09who, you know, get taxpayer dollars to build their multi-million dollar stadiums
- 1:16and then move to another town, you know, five years later.
- 1:19I don't know, crap like that. I never got into it.
- 1:22I like playing certain sports. I like to play baseball. I love baseball.
- 1:27I mean, I even like watching baseball, but like minor league.
- 1:31And yeah, man, I do admire like the athleticism, the raw athleticism or the
- 1:38skill like that these individual dudes put in the work to achieve these
- 1:45great feats of athleticism and
- 1:48it's awesome and i do like that right but as
- 1:51far as just tracking sports and watching every game and all this and that i
- 1:55just got more important things to focus on but everyone loves the olympics yeah
- 2:00so we're gonna these these past olympics and specifically i'm going to talk
- 2:06about like team usa right hockey.
- 2:11They were inspirational. Yeah. Both the men and women's teams both got gold,
- 2:19and they got the full attention of the entire nation and it sparked national pride.
- 2:26Now I know that's a thing nobody likes to have these days is national pride.
- 2:31And the woke activists get mad if somebody's proud to be an American or actually
- 2:36stands for national anthem.
- 2:38But look, beyond all that, right?
- 2:40You had these young athletes out there hustling and they brought home gold for
- 2:47the USA in a sport that isn't typically like USA strong point. Yeah. Hockey.
- 2:56So nevermind trying to politicize any of that stuff.
- 2:59Just the fact that they went out and won on,
- 3:03on determination and skill jack hughes
- 3:09you know his toothless smile and and what i'm going to go ahead and say is an
- 3:16innocent you know boyish face that image is going to be an icon you know for
- 3:21a whole generation of young hockey players.
- 3:26When that photo of of him threw his helmet off and then that that's pure american
- 3:35grit and just the deepest most genuine joy you're ever going to see on ice.
- 3:43Yeah. The face of a generation right there. And then the women's hockey team
- 3:49matched that fire. Yeah.
- 3:52Megan Keller buried the overtime winning goal and showed the world,
- 3:58the whole world, that, you know, heart isn't just gender specific and skill
- 4:05isn't just gender specific.
- 4:06Not only in an in a typically non-american
- 4:11strong sport like hockey but also women's hockey
- 4:14which is not yeah it
- 4:18was great stuff man america usa
- 4:21so all that back you know several you know a few weeks ago sets the stage perfectly
- 4:29for this this show i i've been mulling this over for a while about doing an
- 4:36episode on Shorzy. Yeah.
- 4:40Now, I'm just talking about Team USA and Shorzy is a Canadian show,
- 4:45but it's about hockey, sort of. No, not sort of. It's about hockey.
- 4:53But that show, well, yeah, it's inspiring.
- 5:01It's easy to glance at an episode and write it off as just crude humor.
- 5:06But if you actually watch a few episodes...
- 5:12It's going to pull you in. If you can see past the raunchy jokes in the very
- 5:17foul language, it's a story that's built on loyalty, definitely hard work,
- 5:27and individual and team accountability.
- 5:31Yeah. And the constant ball busting going on between the boys feels honest and
- 5:39genuine because it shows exactly how real men talk when they trust each other. Yeah.
- 5:49And all the crudeness and whatnot, it strips away any pretense, right?
- 5:54And it shows us what it takes to show up, to grind through the pain,
- 6:01whatever it is, and hold yourself and your brothers to a higher standard.
- 6:07The boy's interaction in this show is the heart of it. Yeah,
- 6:12Shorzy, he's the lead character, and he unleashes just relentless ball-busting
- 6:18on the boys and back and forth, right?
- 6:21Dolo, Hitch, Goody, Michaels, they all rip each other, man, and it's so funny.
- 6:30But behind every single jab, you can tell that it's rooted in loyalty and love,
- 6:38man. And like, there is no malice.
- 6:43Yeah, there is no malice in the world. You can tell by the way they're trying.
- 6:49And they regularly hold kangaroo courts to keep each other accountable, you know.
- 6:56And throughout the season, they end up winning. They throw a trophy parade and
- 7:01brought the whole town to get, like, the whole town together.
- 7:06But most importantly throughout this, you'll see that in later seasons,
- 7:12they mentor the next generation, man.
- 7:14And that's, it's funny in the show, and it's the way they do, and it's very clever.
- 7:22But the mentorship is a very real thing.
- 7:26And, and as a team, right, this is the Sudbury Bulldogs is the name of the team there.
- 7:31And they do not, will not leave a teammate behind, man.
- 7:36And they're, the way they talk to each other is the language of,
- 7:43you know, brothers who they have each other's backs no matter what.
- 7:48And no matter how immature the language sounds.
- 7:53Because it is that.
- 7:57It sounds immature, but it's only on the surface, man, and that's what's brilliant about this show.
- 8:04On the surface, it's just clowning and bad language, but just a little bit deeper.
- 8:11That's all it is, just a little bit deeper, and you will see just some depths
- 8:19like you just won't expect.
- 8:22Episode after episode, well, they just get better and better,
- 8:26but Shorzy drops life lessons, man.
- 8:33Life lessons, especially in loyalty and dedication and family even.
- 8:40Yeah, but it does it. The show does it.
- 8:43This is one of the brilliant bits here is that the show does all this without
- 8:48being preachy or self-righteous.
- 8:51I just said it's a Canadian show And that implies to me That it's a little bit
- 8:56liberal As far as politics goes But it doesn't get into that,
- 9:02It's deeper than that, way deeper than that.
- 9:07And it talks about loyalty in a way that means that, like, you carry the weight
- 9:12when your teammate slips.
- 9:13When your teammate's down, you pick it up.
- 9:18And it talks about dedication.
- 9:22Well, it shows dedication. It doesn't talk about it. It shows it in action.
- 9:27Just throughout the, I want to say, season three, where they went from a winless
- 9:33team to the no-show league champions through, well, whether it was, yeah, pure dedication,
- 9:42determination, but also maybe out of spite just to show everyone else,
- 9:47very much F you to everyone else who wrote them off. You know what I mean?
- 9:52Guys, it's very good.
- 9:56And then I said family.
- 9:59There's even a glimpse into Shorzy's life A family life No, I don't mean wife
- 10:06and kids Clearly they're all single guys.
- 10:11His family is like a non-traditional family, right?
- 10:14All his brothers, they're all grown foster kids, but they're all very, very close.
- 10:20And they all just are fiercely loyal to one another and supportive.
- 10:27And yeah, I want the dad's a widower, I think, or, and, you know,
- 10:33one of his brothers is black and one of his sisters is Asian and whatever.
- 10:39They cover all the stuff. Yeah. But not in a woke way, just in a,
- 10:44hey, this is real life kind of way.
- 10:46And that's the brilliance of it. That's the brilliance of it.
- 10:51And then, yes, that's the family family. But the family dynamics really show
- 10:57the most in the team room or in the locker room.
- 11:01The way the boys interact.
- 11:06Yeah the way they interact and the way they go through whatever emotional ups and downs,
- 11:14man such a brilliant show you get pulled into it and you I mean you're rooting for the team man.
- 11:24That's it you are and when they do win that season and they win the cup man
- 11:31and Shorzy raises the cup What?
- 11:35You can feel every emotion, right?
- 11:39The cost of winning that season, the effort that was put into it, and the pride that came.
- 11:50Just the camera work on the ice. I mean, yeah, you see some action on the ice
- 11:56a lot, but a lot of times the action's in the background.
- 12:01You don't see it, but you see the results or the angst or the emotion during
- 12:08it without actually being on the ice.
- 12:11But some of the shots from the ice, oh my God, it's like some triumphant freaking epic war movie.
- 12:21My God. And, and watching their faces, man.
- 12:25Like, it seems like those boys are out playing hockey for, for keeps for real.
- 12:31And it's a TV show for crying out loud.
- 12:33It's, you feel the depth, man.
- 12:38It's done so well and it's easy to blow it off. It's very easy to blow it off, but it's done so well.
- 12:45And even in the off season, right? Season four is them.
- 12:49They're like, It's summertime, so they've won the cup, and now it's party time, right?
- 12:54They spend all summer just cruising around town with the cup,
- 13:03hitting all the landmarks, drinking it up.
- 13:08But that summer is also when they start actually mentoring the Lakers,
- 13:14the Sudbury Lakers, the younger, I say youth and that they're not kids.
- 13:19I mean, they're like teenagers, you know what I mean?
- 13:23And that's good. And that's a, but even then, man, it, it hammers home,
- 13:27like the culture of hard work that, that got him there.
- 13:31And, and then Shorzy goes into coaching and, and he goes into coaching with
- 13:38a, well, a very simple rule and it, and it's this, and it's go where you're needed.
- 13:47So we're going to talk about leadership for a little bit during this episode
- 13:51here. The TV show's great. The TV show's great.
- 13:55And Shorzy is a fictional character who...
- 14:02He gives a straight-up master class in leadership and accountability and drive.
- 14:14And as the character, as the team leader, right, or the team captain or whatever
- 14:18he is, he leads from the front.
- 14:20Yeah, that's a very military thing, leading from the front.
- 14:23And he fights through injuries or skates through them, you know. He's out there playing.
- 14:28And everybody does through the whole team because he demands that exact same thing from everybody.
- 14:34And one of the episodes was hilarious. They were all injured.
- 14:38And they were like, oh, you're about four to six.
- 14:43You're four to six? That means that's supposed to be their recovery time from
- 14:47their injury, but they're out there playing.
- 14:48And that's good or bad, you know, in real life. But I'm just saying it hammers
- 14:53home their dedication and their, their grit, you know, to play through and,
- 15:00and then he starts recruiting, you know, new guys.
- 15:04And, you know, his one thing is, do you, do you love winning?
- 15:09Yeah. But do you hate losing more?
- 15:14Yeah. Everybody loves winning. Do you hate losing?
- 15:18And it's so brilliant and it's delivered so, so good.
- 15:22And even in the team room or the locker room, it's like he, you know,
- 15:27the tough love sort of thing.
- 15:29And there's just absolutely zero tolerance for excuses, right?
- 15:33Every dude on the team owns their, their mistakes.
- 15:39Or even when they're just didn't even make an obvious mistake,
- 15:42they're just not up to it today.
- 15:44Not up to the level. And they own it, man.
- 15:48They own it and there's ball busting but then also it's not just ball busting
- 15:54i mean there's there's like sort of a quiet off to the side support if somebody really needs it like,
- 16:03like and he sees that as good
- 16:06leaders do and eventually i think season four
- 16:09maybe he ends up he's out of the game right he gets he takes such a hard injury
- 16:14that he can't skate anymore and because not because he can't skate anymore but
- 16:19because he looks at it like possibly he's a liability now and he would rather
- 16:23help the team in some other way than to be a liability on the ice,
- 16:29and that's that's brilliant that's it's brilliant in itself.
- 16:34And to break that down i mean to see the episode go and you're like oh man yeah
- 16:39how that's tough for sure.
- 16:41But if you break that down, man, into the emotional toll to a guy who put a
- 16:46career on the ice and then it's time to go, you know?
- 16:51Oh man. But he stays in the, in the sport. It's just.
- 16:56But once he, once he hangs up to skates, he, he may, he stays in the game, right?
- 17:04And he, he still keeps the same fire and the same drive and the same leadership
- 17:12sort of role, but it's from a,
- 17:17position of mentorship, right? And protecting the team legacy, which is important.
- 17:26And then he goes into coaching.
- 17:30And he's just an example, man, of very clear and unclouded vision for the team,
- 17:39absolute integrity for the team.
- 17:42And then he genuinely cares for his homies.
- 17:45And those kind of qualities, those are qualities that men look up to.
- 17:53Now look, Jared Kiso is the guy, the actor.
- 17:57And I don't know what that guy's like in real life. I don't know if he's a good leader in real life.
- 18:05But if he's not, he's a world-class actor.
- 18:09Because you don't just memorize the lines and deliver them in the way that he does.
- 18:16I think he probably is a real life leader and he probably does have those qualities.
- 18:23Now, obviously, Shorzy is a character, right? He's a larger than life character.
- 18:29And, you know, Kiso may or may not be, but it's brilliant in the way he delivers.
- 18:37And I think he delivers based on, I don't know, maybe some experience or maybe
- 18:42just Even in the acting world,
- 18:46I think he created Letterkenny and Shorzy.
- 18:53And that takes some effort, man. That's a big undertaking.
- 18:56And I imagine you've got to be a leader even in that sense to be able to deliver
- 19:02the lines the way he does and the concepts the way he does.
- 19:07The leadership concepts.
- 19:11As you watch, and man, please do watch.
- 19:15Like I said, if he's not a good leader, he's a world-class actor.
- 19:18You could take little five-minute clips of Shorzy leadership moments and create
- 19:25a whole leadership series just based on that.
- 19:29Because he dropped some wisdom, and it's like understated, right?
- 19:33It's shaped out with a little humor.
- 19:38And that's what makes it just palatable, right? Because it's with humor.
- 19:43So you can accept it without feeling like you're being judged or whatnot.
- 19:50But it breeds success. Everything he says breeds success.
- 19:55And if you're in a leadership role, regardless of what field you're in,
- 20:00do yourself a favor and go watch season five, episode one. It's called,
- 20:04the episode's called Keep It Simple.
- 20:08And Shorzy's interactions, there's a young player named Jack who's,
- 20:12he's struggling, right? Struggling.
- 20:17And so Shorzy and a couple of the boys go up with the kid's mom to go up to
- 20:23a game, you know, to give them some support, right?
- 20:28And the interactions between Shorzy and Jack. So Shorzy hits him before the
- 20:33first period, and he gives him a nugget of wisdom.
- 20:36And he talks to him. You know what I mean? Hey, bro, what's going on?
- 20:39This and that and the other.
- 20:40And then you don't see the hockey play, right?
- 20:43You know, it flashes to like Shorzy and the boys in the stands and some other
- 20:49stuff. You don't ever see the gameplay.
- 20:52And then the kid just took what Shorzy said, implemented it, and boom.
- 20:58And then he says, I'll see you in second period.
- 21:02So then the second period, before the second period, he comes back and says,
- 21:05hey, you're a hero, man. You did it. Now do this.
- 21:09He's like, but I can't do that. No, you did this. Now do that.
- 21:12And the kid's like, I'll try. And he goes out and he executes.
- 21:16He's like, I'll see you in third period. And then the kid comes back after the second period.
- 21:21He did what he said he was going to do and what Shorzy guided him to do.
- 21:26Man, masterclass, masterclass.
- 21:30It applies to sports for sure, but it applies to every leadership role,
- 21:36any leadership role, man. So brilliant.
- 21:41So brilliant. And look, I don't know what kind of, you don't have to be a hockey fan.
- 21:47You don't even have to know much about hockey to, to fall in love with this show.
- 21:53The characters alone, when they win your heart instantly, they're honest,
- 21:59they're loyal to each other.
- 22:00They're, they're interactions. They're just, uh, the personalities,
- 22:04man, that they're all unique. They're all different. They're all funny as hell.
- 22:08And most of them are missing like a front tooth. is that's great and then shorzy
- 22:14you know he's larger than life his larger than life style.
- 22:18Kind of it kind of hides the
- 22:21depth and i think it kind of does that on
- 22:24purpose man and like i said if if kiso
- 22:27is not a genuine guy genuine leader genuine i think he genuinely loves hockey
- 22:32he's the he's one of the best actors on the planet because that guy sells every
- 22:38single scene either with a smile or even with pain,
- 22:44whatever it is,
- 22:48he sells every single scene, man.
- 22:51And the whole crew, all the boys, they just feel
- 22:54like a group of dependable dudes that
- 22:57you already know or knew throughout your
- 23:00life and dudes you would trust in a fight
- 23:04or at any job or any
- 23:07mission now look if i bet you any sf guy special forces guy that watches this
- 23:17they immediately see their own oda bros on the screen.
- 23:26The boys on the screen, they throw the same dark humor under pressure.
- 23:30They show the same, just limitless loyalty when things go south, when things turn ugly.
- 23:39And they all, each and every one, run toward the hard work, run toward the fight
- 23:44with the same drive, the same determination.
- 23:48You can look at those dudes and you can think of personality,
- 23:51guys you knew on your ODA or guys you,
- 23:54knew you know in your company and and
- 23:58you can see them man you can see it and you can look at
- 24:01the boys on screen and you can see any and every
- 24:04one of those dudes in uniform right you can you can see it that's the kind of
- 24:10guys that they depict that's the kind of guys that they they are and why is
- 24:16that it's because they live a code of like brotherhood and accountability and,
- 24:23holding each other up and keeping each other in check.
- 24:27And you see that on the screen and you can feel that. Man, it's so brilliant.
- 24:33And there's another aspect here that I think is important.
- 24:38This whole modern, well, political to a degree, but, you know,
- 24:44take on toxic masculinity.
- 24:47It kind of takes that on. This show takes that on, head on, man.
- 24:51Because the show celebrates like real proper authentic manhood yeah that's rooted
- 25:00in loyalty and hard work and dedication to each other and that kind of stuff
- 25:05that's what manhood's rooted in.
- 25:09And these dudes the boys they are they are loud they are physical they're crass and unfiltered,
- 25:20but then at the same time they cried during the national anthem laughing,
- 25:27And Shorzy, throughout the whole season, you know, he's known for crying at
- 25:32little small, like, emotional moments that you might not think are emotional.
- 25:39One, I think on this season five, I think the second episode,
- 25:46Shorzy's supposed to do, like, a sports show, you know, TV show with Wayne Gretzky.
- 25:52And when the producer told him that, he pulled his hat down over his eyes and
- 26:00he was just with his head down.
- 26:03And the ladies are like, are you crying?
- 26:08Because he idolized Wayne Gretzky, right? The great one. And he, yeah, man.
- 26:15It's funny. Yeah, they cry during the national anthem. These men are emotional,
- 26:20right? They're just hard men, but they're emotional.
- 26:24They support each other through heartbreak, like real heartbreak.
- 26:29Mentor the new generation with patience and empathy, you know, because they remember.
- 26:41That's the thing. There was a line the mom asked, how are you so good with the kid?
- 26:47And he's because I was a kid. He remembers.
- 26:51He didn't let that go. he remembers what it was like to be a kid coming up getting
- 26:56mentored by by some other,
- 26:59rock star you know and that
- 27:01stuff is all contrary to what everybody's crying
- 27:05about the toxic masculinity the show
- 27:08mocks like that stuff and it mocks it hard the sensitivity seminar seminars
- 27:14and like soft hockey where they they penalize hitting and and what it does though
- 27:21the show masterfully shows that real strength includes some emotional depth,
- 27:27especially for the game, right?
- 27:29But especially for the boys beside you, your brothers, the men to your right and left.
- 27:36That's what you'll hear in the military all the time.
- 27:39For the men to the left and the right of you, that's why you do what you do.
- 27:43And what this show shows, and it's legit,
- 27:47is that it shows that That masculinity.
- 27:52Builds people up It holds everyone accountable But it builds people up.
- 28:00Does not do is it does not apologize for being masculine.
- 28:05It does not apologize for wanting to win.
- 28:09And it certainly doesn't apologize for hating to lose.
- 28:14It glorifies masculinity and the way that masculinity is positive.
- 28:21The catchphrase toxic masculinity is just that.
- 28:25So It's a political catchphrase. There's toxic femininity.
- 28:29There's toxic any name of personality trait.
- 28:33Then there's a toxic version of it.
- 28:36So toxic masculinity doesn't mean anything at all.
- 28:40It's just a way to belittle men and whatever. I think gaslight men.
- 28:45I think that's a term that people like to use.
- 28:49Every personality trait, it all has a toxic version to it, folks.
- 28:55So don't get wrapped around that. If you're a man hater, think about why.
- 29:00Well, I hate toxic masculinity.
- 29:02I like sensitive guys. Well, sensitive guys, you can be masculine and be sensitive.
- 29:09You can be masculine and have emotions. Doesn't necessarily mean that you need
- 29:14to spill them out all over the place all the time.
- 29:18But yeah, man, this show celebrates masculinity. Now look, that being said,
- 29:25every woman, every female character in this show, they're strong. Yeah, they're strong.
- 29:35They're independent. They're like the, the team owner is a, is a woman and her,
- 29:41and her crew, the team owner.
- 29:43And then two like native girls.
- 29:46So they, they highlight their independence and their role in running the show
- 29:53and, and helping the team to be successful, et cetera, et cetera.
- 29:59And they're pivotal in it. In fact, and yeah.
- 30:04Yeah. Now, I don't know how much this show appeals to women,
- 30:08but I'm telling you right now that every woman in that show is a prominent, strong woman.
- 30:15There ain't just some barefoot and pregnant chick.
- 30:17Now, there's hot chicks all over the place. Yes, they're all, you know...
- 30:24Attractive they're all
- 30:27attractive no no dude about it but anyway
- 30:31celebrates masculinity yep it celebrates it and the women balance that out because
- 30:39they call out they call out bullshit it's great it's brilliant the way it the way they interact act.
- 30:49So look, I encourage you to watch it.
- 30:53And as you do, just keep the leadership aspects in mind.
- 30:58Just keep, yeah, keep the leadership aspects in mind.
- 31:01Look at it and go, oh yeah, I can see how that under the subterfuge of,
- 31:08you know, your mom jokes and I banged your mom jokes, which there's a minute, a million of them.
- 31:15Under that, look for the goodness. Yeah, the leadership goodness, because it is goodness.

- 31:35Shorzy is a rare treasure in today's streaming world, folks.
- 31:39There's a lot of garbage. There's some good stuff. You know,
- 31:42there's entertaining things, but Shorzy is a rare treasure and it keeps you laughing for sure.

- 31:58And in the modern age here of softness and wokeness and non-binaryness and frigging
- 32:08all the stuff, right, that's going on.
- 32:12This show celebrates men being men with all their flaws, with all their crass humor, and.
- 32:22Humor, deep commitment to each other is what, is what they have.
- 32:29And that's what it highlights and it celebrates.
- 32:33So however immature it is, because it is to a degree, that's just, that's just a veil.
- 32:42You can see the deeper stuff in there. And if you watch this show,
