Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: As I did mention a little bit earlier this morning,
- 0:02Speaker 1: the Country Liberal Party currently well. They were holding over
- 0:05Speaker 1: the weekend their Central Council meeting in Catherine and voted
- 0:09Speaker 1: down the motion of no confidence in the opposition leader.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Apparently there was a robust discussion that was held and
- 0:16Speaker 1: the motion was resoundingly defeated. Now you might recall it
- 0:19Speaker 1: had been reported we mentioned it on a little while
- 0:22Speaker 1: back that there was apparently a couple of CLP branches
- 0:26Speaker 1: that wanted to have a vote of no confidence in
- 0:29Speaker 1: the opposition leader Leofanocchiaro. Now joining me on the line
- 0:32Speaker 1: is the COLP president, Sean Heenan. Good morning to you. Sean.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Good morning, Katie. How are you today?
- 0:39Speaker 1: Yeah? Good, thank you, Thanks so much for your time
- 0:41Speaker 1: this morning. I know you've just gotten off a plane,
- 0:43Speaker 1: so I appreciate you having a chat with us. Sean.
- 0:47Speaker 1: How did it go on the weekend?
- 0:50Speaker 2: Very good? Actually, we all, like you said, we all
- 0:54Speaker 2: had a good robust discussion. Everyone got to talk about
- 0:58Speaker 2: their issues and moving forward. Where for the church and
- 1:02Speaker 2: we're going to make sure we take the election next
- 1:06Speaker 2: year and win.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Sean, what were the concerns that were being raised by
- 1:10Speaker 1: some branches within the COLP. Why do they not have
- 1:13Speaker 1: confidence or why were they saying they didn't have confidence
- 1:16Speaker 1: in Leafano Giaro?
- 1:19Speaker 2: Basically, the few things at Central Council that were discussed
- 1:23Speaker 2: were mainly just trying to get people's points across and
- 1:27Speaker 2: maybe the avenues that were being used we're not being
- 1:31Speaker 2: listened correctly. So we've worked on that and we understand
- 1:35Speaker 2: that everyone gets their right to say we are a democracy. Unfortunately,
- 1:39Speaker 2: luck labor, they just do what they want to do
- 1:41Speaker 2: and don't learn anyone.
- 1:42Speaker 1: In and so what was the like, you know, what
- 1:46Speaker 1: was the result then of the vote?
- 1:49Speaker 2: It was overwhelming. I'm not at liberty to give numbers
- 1:55Speaker 2: due to the Central Council, but it was overwhelming.
- 2:00Speaker 1: So there was a vote of not or there was
- 2:03Speaker 1: a motion of no confidence in the opposition leader leaf
- 2:06Speaker 1: and Ochiaro that was overwhelmingly voted down. And then was
- 2:09Speaker 1: there a vote of confidence in Leofanocchiaro?
- 2:14Speaker 2: Absolutely there was shortly after that.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Yes, and it was overwhelmingly voted up. Is that what
- 2:20Speaker 1: had sort of gone on correct?
- 2:22Speaker 2: Very much?
- 2:22Speaker 1: So you now, was there a decision made by or
- 2:26Speaker 1: what's the what was discussed when it comes to the
- 2:30Speaker 1: position of the Parliamentary Wing with the voice because I
- 2:33Speaker 1: know that that has also been a point of contention.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Well, yes it is, and I understand that the party
- 2:39Speaker 2: has taken the platform. The pocis sorry that we have
- 2:45Speaker 2: and Bill spoke on this long before Jacenter or the
- 2:49Speaker 2: party decided. The wing had already made a decision, and
- 2:52Speaker 2: I guess we don't want to seem like we're wishy
- 2:55Speaker 2: washy or backflippers like the other side. So they're going
- 2:59Speaker 2: to sit there and wait and find out any more
- 3:01Speaker 2: information they can. But they understand that the party has
- 3:07Speaker 2: taken this stand, and we understand what their position is
- 3:11Speaker 2: as well.
- 3:11Speaker 1: And Sean, was I mean, was that one of the
- 3:14Speaker 1: points of contention why some people had had wanted this
- 3:19Speaker 1: vote of no confidence in Leah.
- 3:22Speaker 2: It may have been. It may have played a small
- 3:25Speaker 2: part that no.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Now just in terms of the resounding vote or what
- 3:30Speaker 1: you've described as a resounding vote to keep Lea Finocchio
- 3:35Speaker 1: as the opposition leader or the CLP leader. I mean,
- 3:38Speaker 1: there clearly is a few people within the party who
- 3:41Speaker 1: aren't happy with her leadership. Is it a small number
- 3:45Speaker 1: or is it bigger than what you know, than what
- 3:46Speaker 1: the CLP want the public to believe.
- 3:51Speaker 2: No. No, it's everyone's entitled to their opinion, and at
- 3:55Speaker 2: some point or another people will disagree and then they
- 3:58Speaker 2: may come back around and agree. So I don't think
- 4:01Speaker 2: it's a huge amount, but there are people who always
- 4:04Speaker 2: in everywhere will not get along, and that's what it
- 4:07Speaker 2: comes down to.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Sean. I'm being told that fifty nine voted for LEA
- 4:11Speaker 1: and only nine against. I'm not sure whether you can
- 4:15Speaker 1: confirm those numbers.
- 4:18Speaker 2: I won't confirm, but they're wrong.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Okay, was it more or less? No?
- 4:23Speaker 2: I won't confirm. No, that's fine, there was yep. I
- 4:29Speaker 2: need to go on the numbers. That's how we voted,
- 4:33Speaker 2: and it was voted down.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Well, Sean, it sounds as though it was a busy
- 4:38Speaker 1: weekend for members of the COLP. What else is on
- 4:40Speaker 1: the agenda for you guys at that Central Council meeting.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Basically, we're getting our pre selection committees ready and we're
- 4:48Speaker 2: getting ready to find excellent candidates and take this election
- 4:52Speaker 2: by storm.
- 4:53Speaker 1: When do you reckon you'll have a better idea of
- 4:55Speaker 1: who is going to run in some of the different electorates.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Well, we've got three months now, we've approved pre selection.
- 5:03Speaker 2: So that's part of our constitution that we have to
- 5:09Speaker 2: find someone and select them within three months, otherwise we
- 5:11Speaker 2: have to go back to the drawing board. So yeah, right,
- 5:14Speaker 2: I've already got a great deal of people in mind,
- 5:17Speaker 2: absolutely great, great people.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Right, So you'll have a better idea of who's actually
- 5:21Speaker 1: running by September this year, we should hope.
- 5:24Speaker 2: So yeah, well.
- 5:26Speaker 1: It sounds like it's all happening, Sean. I appreciate your
- 5:29Speaker 1: time this morning and made I know it's been a
- 5:31Speaker 1: bit of a juggle for you just getting off a plane,
- 5:33Speaker 1: so I do appreciate you having a quick chat with us.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Thanks very much, Katie, thank you time as well.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Thank you
