- 0:20These recordings took place live from Adam's clinic in London's
- 0:24world famous Harley Street. So get yourself comfortable and
- 0:31enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:39Hi, it's Adam here, and you're about to listen to a
- 0:42conversation I had with hypnotherapist Graham Wood about
- 0:46how he became a hypnotherapist and why he tended to specialize
- 0:52in working with people that were business owners and how he
- 0:56accidentally became a well-being therapist within corporate
- 1:01structures. So I think you might find this
- 1:03conversation really interesting. So find a nice, comfortable
- 1:06place and relax. Hi, it's Adam here, and welcome
- 1:14to the hypnotist. Only today I'm not your
- 1:17hypnotist. We are joined by a very special
- 1:21guest hypnotist, Graham Wood. Welcome to the show.
- 1:24Hi Adam, thanks for having me on.
- 1:26Great to have you here. Now I'm always curious, I've,
- 1:30I've met you a couple of times at different conferences, mainly
- 1:32the UK Hypnosis conference, but I'm always curious how people
- 1:36got into the world that we call hypnosis.
- 1:38So what's your story? Quite a long one.
- 1:41How long have you got? So I started my own business in
- 1:471993. I was a DJ and an entertainer
- 1:52and I came across hypnotists doing some corporate events
- 1:56where they had the after dinner dances and during the courses
- 2:01they had the entertainers in and it went from being the boardie
- 2:04comedians to the women dressed in like metal metal bikinis and
- 2:11angle grinders showering sparks everywhere.
- 2:14Then this guy called Paul McKenna came on TV with the
- 2:18hypnotic world of Paul McKenna and everyone wanted hypnotists.
- 2:22So as I was doing the discos between the courses and the
- 2:25cabaret shows, became hypnotists and I got friends with one of
- 2:30them who was at quite a few events I got and I was really
- 2:32interested in it. So he sort of took me under his
- 2:34wing and took me backstage and showed me some of the bits and
- 2:39pieces that they did and I sort of fell out of love with it
- 2:42quite quickly because it's very much a lot of pre show work.
- 2:46Anyone who who deals in magic mentalism know what I mean by
- 2:49that? I was a keen amateur magician as
- 2:52well and I thought it'd be the next step up.
- 2:54So that fell by the by for a bit.
- 2:56And then in 2007 I went to a magic shop in Kent called
- 3:01Algazam and I was doing quite a lot of the mind reading
- 3:04mentalism, that sort of stuff at the time.
- 3:07And he said, oh, you're still interested in hypnosis.
- 3:11And so he sold me a book called Reality is Plastic by Anthony
- 3:15Jacquin, who anyone in this world knows and has probably got
- 3:18the book and read the book. And it basically stripped
- 3:21hypnosis bare and explained how it worked in easier, easy to
- 3:30understand language, practical demonstrations.
- 3:32There was a DVD with it that showed you how to do it.
- 3:36And I was at hypnosis meet, sorry at Magicians meet up one
- 3:39night and someone said, well, how are you getting all that
- 3:41hypnosis? And I'm like, well, I've read
- 3:43the book, haven't done any yet. So we were out in the bar in
- 3:46Covent Garden that night and doing some magic and he said go
- 3:49on, do some of your hypnosis. So I was like better have
- 3:53another beer first, get a bit of Dutch courage.
- 3:55And I did it. And I don't know who was more
- 3:59shocked, me or the person I was talking to when they hadn't
- 4:04stuck to the table, when they couldn't remember their name.
- 4:07And I was just like wow, this is amazing.
- 4:10So I devoured as much information on the hypnosis for
- 4:15entertainment as I could, started putting some shows on,
- 4:18did some stage shows and ended up doing corporate work.
- 4:23So I was doing big events, hundred 150 people, which I
- 4:26absolutely loved doing. And at the end of one of the
- 4:29events manager had to come up with that was really good.
- 4:34Do you do Wellness days and being a good self-employed
- 4:38person, I am, I'm going. Yeah, of course I am.
- 4:40So he promptly booked me in for 6:00.
- 4:42So I came back home, got onto Google.
- 4:45What's a Wellness day? No idea.
- 4:49Found out what they entailed and to my delight a lot of it was
- 4:53around breath work. And I loved breath work.
- 4:56I'd used breath work quite a lot before, just as a coping
- 4:59mechanism for performance nerves, performance anxiety,
- 5:02before I went on stage and I did quite a few of these.
- 5:07I was doing, doing, doing a lot. 1 led to another led to another
- 5:11and then someone said can you help me with my son?
- 5:15He's got a real issue. I was like, oh, what's that?
- 5:18Then little bit nervous 'cause I hadn't done 1 to 1.
- 5:22And he said well he's got his own business.
- 5:23He's about 3-4 years in and he is really struggling and I
- 5:30thought I recognise that story from myself.
- 5:32So I said yeah, 'cause I'll talk to him.
- 5:35That's about as much as I could offer.
- 5:38And talking to him, he was basically telling me my life
- 5:44story of everything was building up, things were getting hard and
- 5:50more stressful. He got through the first year,
- 5:53which was great, purely on adrenaline.
- 5:56And then as the business grows, what no one tells you when you
- 5:58start a business is the more your business grows, the more
- 6:02your problems grow, the more your stresses grow, the more
- 6:05your anxieties grow. And he was telling me this story
- 6:11while we was sitting talking. And all of a sudden I just saw
- 6:14me sitting in the chair and had this big flashback of something
- 6:19that I don't remember happening. And afterwards I had to phone
- 6:23the person who came up in my memories just to say this is
- 6:28real. And what happened is we'd had
- 6:34the Millennium. I was in the events
- 6:36entertainment business. It was brilliant, Such a good
- 6:38year. Money was coming in.
- 6:41And so I reinvested it into business.
- 6:42I grew it. I moved into some other areas
- 6:46and what I didn't realise that in doing that I'd neglected the
- 6:50rest of my life. I had a missus at home and I
- 6:55hardly saw her. She had kids from a previous
- 6:57relationship. I was step dad to them
- 6:59basically. I hardly saw them.
- 7:02I hardly saw anything outside my life doing this business.
- 7:06I was all over the country doing loads of stuff and I went round
- 7:10to my friend's house one day to pick some stuff up and I saw my
- 7:13car. I saw saw her car in the drive.
- 7:16She's like, oh, that's interesting.
- 7:19So I've sat and I've waited and she's come out dressed to the
- 7:22nines looking absolutely glamorous.
- 7:24And oh, I wonder what she was doing there.
- 7:27So when I got home later that night, I said, all right, how
- 7:29are you? You had a good day.
- 7:30Oh, the problems are like sob story.
- 7:33I was like, oh really? I said, what do you mean?
- 7:37I said you weren't, were you? You were around such and such
- 7:40his house. What's going on?
- 7:44And she said well you're never here, I've got to get my
- 7:46attention from somewhere, blah blah blah.
- 7:47Big explosion, bang, 8 year relationship over in a moment.
- 7:53And this was coming up to Christmas.
- 7:57I was still really busy with work and then I was going to an
- 8:00event up in Manchester. Not in the right mind,
- 8:03everything going wrong in my head.
- 8:05And I've gone into a service station, filled up with diesel,
- 8:11come back out, no van. And I was like, Oh my gosh, that
- 8:16called, called the police straight away.
- 8:19They've checked the CCTV, what I've done.
- 8:22I've got out the van, but I'd left the keys in the ignition.
- 8:25Some chances just looking. Oh, that's handy.
- 8:27We'll have a van. And I lost between then and
- 8:31Christmas, I lost nearly £100,000 worth of kit and work.
- 8:38So I was in a hole. I was in a real big hole and my
- 8:44escape was temping bowling. Used to go bowling 2-3 times a
- 8:47week, bowled in a couple of leagues.
- 8:49And everyone there knew something was up.
- 8:53They knew I wasn't right. They knew I wasn't well.
- 8:56And of course, oh, you're right, you're right.
- 8:58And of course, when, when someone's in street, yeah, all
- 9:00right, they'll say, yeah, I'm all right, yeah, I'm all right.
- 9:03And I was sitting in a cafe just having a used to be called a
- 9:06bowl of banger and chips. Anyone went to the airport
- 9:08bowled? Well, no, it was just a monkey
- 9:09hot dog with some chips. And one of my friends sat down.
- 9:12She just sat down next to me, and she said, come on, Woody,
- 9:16what's up? And because she hadn't asked me
- 9:20if I was all right, she knew something was wrong.
- 9:24It just bypassed that. So my little conscious block, my
- 9:28barricade, and I just burst into tears.
- 9:32Now, I don't remember any of this.
- 9:35I don't remember the incident happening.
- 9:37It was only 13 years later, talking to this young lad that
- 9:43it all came back in mind. I was like whoa, this is where I
- 9:48need to be. I need to be helping people like
- 9:50this because I don't remember how bad I got my defence
- 9:56mechanism kicked in, got me through it.
- 10:00And talking to some other friends afterwards, they were
- 10:02like, Oh yeah, you weren't right for about 6 months, but no one
- 10:07wants to say anything. I had that reputation of, oh,
- 10:11that's Graham. He can do everything.
- 10:12He does everything. He's he runs his own businesses,
- 10:15etcetera. He, he copes with everything.
- 10:17And that's because I did have to cope with anything.
- 10:19I didn't have that out there. So from then on I really focused
- 10:24doing these corporate events. Still, I was asking does anyone
- 10:29in higher management, anyone in the upper end need help?
- 10:33HR is that is there for all the, sorry, all the people in the
- 10:37offices, they're there for everyone, but not the top, top
- 10:41people don't have anywhere to turn.
- 10:43So I started doing sessions with them and I started to train in
- 10:49hypnotherapy. But all the training I was doing
- 10:53at the time, I mean I spent several £1000 on courses.
- 10:56So like one year, 2 year long courses, I was going to two or
- 10:59three and then just going, this isn't me.
- 11:03I it's like I'm picking up a book.
- 11:05You're telling me your problem and I'm picking up a book.
- 11:07How to deal with it If it was that, if that was the right
- 11:11approach, there would be no hypnotherapies.
- 11:14People would just go out and buy these books.
- 11:16But it wasn't personal. So again, YouTube being my
- 11:20friend, searched through YouTube and I found quite a few people
- 11:25on there doing things slightly differently.
- 11:27But the main one was Carl Smith and he just had this approach of
- 11:34I don't need to know what's wrong because if you knew what
- 11:38was wrong, I'm paraphrasing here, This is my my version
- 11:41right now. If you knew what was wrong with
- 11:43you, you wouldn't be sitting in front of me.
- 11:44Now you're, you're clever, you've got yourself to wear your
- 11:49eye knife. You would be able to resolve the
- 11:51problem. So if you can't resolve a
- 11:53problem, it's because you don't know consciously the answer.
- 11:59So I started using his approach of I don't care.
- 12:03I just know it's in there somewhere.
- 12:05And I, I, I now teach his method because I love it that much.
- 12:11I've changed it a bit to suit my personality, but I just, when
- 12:15you're there, well, I'm going to start just peeling off the
- 12:17layers of the onion. We're going to let all that shit
- 12:18out. We're going to get to that bit
- 12:20in the middle. And is that the kinetic shift
- 12:23which cause? Protocol, yeah.
- 12:26And there's a bit in it called emotional detox, which was the
- 12:30bit that I used because that really resonated.
- 12:32It was just let anything come up.
- 12:37Just let anything you've got come up and let it go.
- 12:43His his kind of pressure valve metaphor for the emotional
- 12:46detox, I think is. It's, it's not great.
- 12:49I used the peeling back of an onion.
- 12:52I changed to that because I did find a few times people not on
- 12:58that sofa, but on the sofa I had at the time were getting a
- 13:01little bit resistant. They could feel, feel it coming
- 13:04up. Well, I don't want to cry.
- 13:05I don't want to cry. I don't want to cry.
- 13:08But using that onion, saying, you know how that makes you cry
- 13:11when you peel the onion off, when you cut into the onion, it
- 13:13just gave that subtle little dig to say it's OK to cry.
- 13:18I knew from that memory and from what my friend told me.
- 13:23I was crying for two hours. And you needed to.
- 13:27It was the release well. That shit came out.
- 13:29So that's where I thought this is where I need to go.
- 13:34This is what I want to do. And obviously going from the
- 13:38working with the entrepreneurs, which I still do and I'm still
- 13:41looking for entrepreneurs. I know how hard it is just to be
- 13:45that. I'm not going to tell you what
- 13:47to do because you know your business better than me.
- 13:50I can't advise you on your business, but what I can do is I
- 13:54can be that person that you need to let that shit go.
- 14:01And because I don't know you, because not friends, I'm going
- 14:04to sound a bit harsh here, but I'm not going to get emotionally
- 14:07involved because I'm not taking your baggage, John.
- 14:10You can cry your eyes out. I do feel a bit of empathy, but
- 14:14I don't ever get bogged down by what other people are going.
- 14:17Through no, I, I think it's very, because, you know, being
- 14:20in the world of hypnotherapy, a lot of hypnotherapists are
- 14:24empaths and they want to know the stories and they want to get
- 14:27involved. I think I'm more like you.
- 14:29I'm, I'm more kind of disassociated and I see myself
- 14:32as the problem solver, as the, as the detective.
- 14:35I don't need to kind of get emotionally involved, which is,
- 14:38which is really, really important.
- 14:40And I imagine that you helping other business leaders and
- 14:42entrepreneurs, it helped that you'd been running your business
- 14:45from a young age. It did.
- 14:47It did because when I took it on, I had no idea what I was
- 14:52getting involved with. I used to be a computer engineer
- 14:55and I was a very computer engineer.
- 14:56I was pretty well paid for someone who was 1920 and then
- 15:02the whole I blame IBM. They came out with this new
- 15:06model of computer that the PS2, if anyone remembers it, you
- 15:11might have had a 10 megabyte hard drive if you really pushed
- 15:14the boat out. But I went from taking out
- 15:17boards, finding out what chip was faulty and doing repairs at
- 15:20that level to, Oh yeah, that one's thrown away, we'll throw
- 15:23another one in. And we called them board swap
- 15:27monkeys because that's where that's all we became.
- 15:30So the company decided there was quite a few of us far too well
- 15:34paid for what we've been helping done.
- 15:36And we were let go and I couldn't find another job.
- 15:40I was all, I've been a DJ for a long time, just as a hobby.
- 15:42So I took that into full time. That grew into needing to put
- 15:49four or five discos out in a night.
- 15:50So I just bought more gear and put other people out to owning a
- 15:56opening a shop to sell the equipment, to hire the
- 15:59equipment. And that's noble ground to now
- 16:01I'm doing full blown events, event management, event
- 16:05planning, all the paperwork, all that side of things.
- 16:10So that's just grown organically.
- 16:12It's obviously taken up a lot of time.
- 16:14My deejang is stepping back because I don't enjoy that so
- 16:17much that this hypnotherapy is a new lease of life for what I
- 16:21want to do. And since lockdown, that started
- 16:26to snowball because more and more people need us.
- 16:30And I realized quite early on, certainly in the training, that
- 16:36I was doing virtually every bit, every induction I've taken a
- 16:40deep breath. And when you're ready, just
- 16:42bring it out. And I'm like, this is breath
- 16:44work, and I've been interested in breath work for a long time.
- 16:48So I started to incorporate the breath work and my knowledge of
- 16:52how breathing affects your body. So if I want you to calm down,
- 16:56instead of saying look, just calm down, just relax.
- 16:58I just tell you how to breathe. Knowing that in a few minutes
- 17:02time, your body would respond automatically, a bit like a
- 17:06magician doing a trick on one ahead, pick a card, any card,
- 17:10you take it in a moment. I'll tell you what it is.
- 17:12I already know what it is to you.
- 17:15You didn't have that choice. It's the, it's the one move
- 17:18ahead and you kind of know and, and I think a lot of
- 17:21hypnotherapists, I think they underestimate the importance of
- 17:24breath, even though you're right, most sessions start with
- 17:27take a deep breath in. The profound thing with me and I
- 17:31actually stumbled across because my journey into hypnosis was
- 17:34originally through NLP and then through NLP I started seeing
- 17:39some of Tony Robbins early work and I think his early work
- 17:42Unlimited Power, that kind of stuff was quite good.
- 17:45And there was this element of breathing ratios.
- 17:48And at the time I, I had a hyper vigilant, really kind of
- 17:51overactive nervous system and just breathing in the ratios of
- 17:56breathing in, hold the breath, retain it and then outward.
- 17:59It completely transformed my emotional state rapidly.
- 18:03And, and now people know a lot more about breath work from the
- 18:07likes of Wim Hof and, and, and it's, it's become much more kind
- 18:11of popular, but there was a time where it's kind of intuitive,
- 18:14but most people didn't know the power of how breathing can
- 18:18really kind of regulate your nervous system.
- 18:20Well, the one example I've got of that is your mum always used
- 18:27to tell you after you had a meal, I was just sit down for 10
- 18:30minutes and relax before you go out and play.
- 18:33That's because breathing the right way activates the
- 18:37digestive system and they didn't know that, but they just knew
- 18:45how many times you run at school when you're a bit panicky.
- 18:47Oh, just taking it, breathing deeply through your through your
- 18:49nose, not your mouth. Just breathe it when you're out
- 18:51of breath to try and calm your body down.
- 18:53They're telling you that, but they don't actually know why.
- 18:56We just say intrinsically know it.
- 19:00Yeah. So I, I studied quite a bit of
- 19:02it and I was, I was bringing it in and I was talking to it was,
- 19:06it was strange. So I was talking to some of the
- 19:07breathwork instructors. I was, and people were like
- 19:09working. Oh, no, no, no, you can't use
- 19:11this in hypnotherapy. This is breathwork.
- 19:14Like it's all yogic, it's all Mystic.
- 19:15It's all list that and the other.
- 19:17And then I was talking to some of the hypnotherapy trainers.
- 19:19Oh no, no, no, it's not hypnosis.
- 19:21And I'm like but the two marry. They have endogram.
- 19:25They overlap massively. When I did the UK Hypnosis
- 19:30convention in 2020, whatever it was, when I did my first breath
- 19:35work for therapists presentation, I was in one of
- 19:38the smaller rooms which normally there's 20-30 people in.
- 19:41And when I walked in, it was standing room only and I've just
- 19:45gone. I forgot my name, I forgot
- 19:49everything, right? It was just like I'd walked in
- 19:51and I was like, Oh my God, all the big names, all the people
- 19:54that I looked up to in Hidden Therapy World were there to
- 19:56listen to me a little bit. And the take away after that
- 20:01that people came up with, I didn't realise.
- 20:05I mean, I did a little session at the end.
- 20:07I know it's the perfect audience because everyone's been in and
- 20:10out of hypnosis all weekend and you can just hypnotize in order
- 20:13to go and sleep and they would. But the fact that I did a
- 20:17technique that I used in an induction and people were
- 20:20sliding down the walls at the back.
- 20:22Like. Lyrics, but I knew so much about
- 20:27breath work and breathing that hadn't transported itself
- 20:31across. I was like, this is where I'm
- 20:33going for the next couple of years.
- 20:34Teach the therapist the breath work because it's something I
- 20:39teach every client when they're here.
- 20:42I can only help them while they're here.
- 20:44But when they leave, hopefully I've just prepared them for the
- 20:47next shitstorm coming down the road.
- 20:49So and. What?
- 20:50What's the big distinction, Graham, Because for me, I've not
- 20:54studied breath work a lot, but, but my basic understanding of
- 20:57what I know is that your sympathetic nervous system,
- 21:01you're more likely to kind of shallow breathe from the chest
- 21:04and the parasympathetic nervous system much more likely long
- 21:07deep breaths from the, from the diaphragm.
- 21:09In in all the studying that you've done of breath work,
- 21:12what, what is the most profound kind of element that for someone
- 21:15that can immediately kind of help them to kind of get in a
- 21:19better state, what kind of stuff can they do?
- 21:21It's a diaphragmatic breathing, so it's the breathing into the
- 21:25belly, but it's not deep breaths.
- 21:29It's just long controlled breaths.
- 21:32And if you breathe in when you breathe out, just make sure you
- 21:36breathe out for longer than you breathe in.
- 21:39Yeah. Because that drops the body into
- 21:42a relaxed state. And please, breathe through your
- 21:45nose. Don't breathe through your mouth
- 21:48because breathing through your nose activates the nose is an
- 21:52organ. It's designed for breathing.
- 21:53It's more than just sitting your glasses on your mouth's for
- 21:57eating. So unless you can start shoving
- 21:59food up your mouth, nose, don't stop putting air in your mouth.
- 22:01Just breathe through your nose. That starts to send signals,
- 22:05neurotransmitters around your body.
- 22:08Do your breathing and you can calm, you can relax.
- 22:10And I mean, if you noted, professional sports people,
- 22:13runners, long distance runners, they're all breathing through
- 22:16their nose because you breathe less, because you need less,
- 22:21because also breathing through your nose, it warms the air.
- 22:24It it just gets it to the right temperature, the right humidity
- 22:30for it then to transfer through the lungs.
- 22:32So you're using all the oxygen properly when you're breathing
- 22:35through your mouth. You're not.
- 22:37You're wasting a lot. Yeah.
- 22:39Realise how little you breathe, how little you need to breathe.
- 22:43And that does just relax you. And that's the thing.
- 22:47And when you train the diaphragm, you can actually you,
- 22:51you require less effort. You see people that are kind of
- 22:54chest breathers because the whole, the shoulders go up each
- 22:57time they breathe. And the diaphragm, it's kind of
- 22:59like you're, there's very little movement and it, and it's almost
- 23:03kind of like you can create the vacuum just by your diaphragm
- 23:06moving. It's very, very efficient.
- 23:08And you're right, great, great for calming.
- 23:11Would you be able to give us a, it's a breath work example, so
- 23:14anyone listening right now, they could immediately do something
- 23:18to kind of access that. Study, I mean one that is, it's
- 23:21called the 711 breath. It's used for panic attacks.
- 23:24I've slightly adjusted it for hypnotherapy, hypnosis purposes.
- 23:30If you just breathe, if you put your hand on your chest and your
- 23:32hand on your stomach and just breathe normally, just breathe
- 23:35as you would now, one of three things is going to happen.
- 23:39Either your hand on your chest is going to move up and down,
- 23:43your hand on your belly is going to move up and down, or they're
- 23:45both moving up and down. Now, if none of those is
- 23:48happening, you're dead. But what you want is for the
- 23:52hand on the chest to stay still and the hand on your belly just
- 23:55to move up and down slowly as you breathe in and out.
- 23:58So breathe through your chest, not with your chest into your
- 24:02belly. And if you just breathe like
- 24:05that for a little bit through your nose and breathe in for six
- 24:08seconds and just breathe out for six seconds, no gap, no holding,
- 24:14just breathe in for six seconds, breathe out for six seconds.
- 24:20And you will notice in a very short while you just start to
- 24:23feel calmer. Now, if you're having a bit of a
- 24:28panic attack or you want to cut, you want to force that calmness,
- 24:33we can breathe into the chest as well.
- 24:34But I want to breathe into your belly for the count of three,
- 24:37your chest for the count of three, and then take that little
- 24:39sip of air to fill the top up. Then just breathe out for
- 24:43109876543210. Breathe into your belly 2-3,
- 24:53chest 2/3 fit behind your nose, then just out for 109876543210.
- 25:04Just notice how you feel. Just notice how you feel.
- 25:12Now when I'm with the client I'll do the third one and I
- 25:17cheat a little bit because I've got 10987654321 and 0.
- 25:23Now allow your eyes to close and feel that hypnosis coming
- 25:28through your body because you feel a physiological effect.
- 25:31Yeah. You're probably feeling now
- 25:33after just two. Yeah, it is amazing because
- 25:38there's certain things that humans need, like we need, we
- 25:41need sleep. You know, you can you can live,
- 25:43you know, a maximum of a week to 10 days without sleep.
- 25:46You need food. You can, you know, have a few
- 25:48days without that, you know, and water maybe a day or two.
- 25:52But breath, we're talking minutes.
- 25:54Like it's the most important kind of resource that a human
- 25:57can have. And you're right, most people
- 25:59have never really learned how to breathe properly and or change
- 26:03how they breathe with intention. Is it's, It seems so obvious,
- 26:07but you know, it's such a powerful thing.
- 26:09Well, I think there's a lot of things within the therapy world
- 26:14this, the psychosomatic touching techniques, tapping, things like
- 26:19that, the Havening technique or the psychosomatic touch.
- 26:23You watch a mother with a baby and they'll sit there and
- 26:26they'll just be stroking them. And if you just stroke your skin
- 26:30anywhere at a rate of about 3 centimetres or an inch a second,
- 26:37you'll suddenly start to feel yourself calm down because
- 26:40you're activating reactors, neurons, everything within your
- 26:43body that's just giving you that sense of calm.
- 26:46Yeah. And it's taken neuroscience
- 26:47years and years and years to find out what humans have been
- 26:50doing since the beginning of time.
- 26:52Yeah. And that's what I love about the
- 26:55hypnotherapy is I don't understand it.
- 26:59I don't understand it, but I know it works and we work with
- 27:04metaphors a lot of the time. We're very metaphorical people.
- 27:07So if I can explain it to you in a way you understand, it's going
- 27:10to work. We love to understand things and
- 27:15we love to have control. So if I can then give you
- 27:17something to take away, if you feel that anxiety coming up,
- 27:23just do this and you start to become aware because I mean,
- 27:28particularly anxiety, and I know you deal with it.
- 27:30That's probably the number one thing we deal with in people is
- 27:35recognising it. We don't tend to notice it until
- 27:39we're right in it. But if you can recognise that
- 27:43feeling building, just breathe it out.
- 27:48And if you use a breath that is going to calm you.
- 27:51And you say about the parasympathetic sympathetic.
- 27:54So we when we're really, we're breathing here because that's
- 27:57activating our fight or flight. Now that's good if we need to
- 28:01activate our fight or flight, but it's not good if we need to
- 28:04calm down. So just.
- 28:07Thinking of a metaphor that popped into my head, it's it's
- 28:09kind of like a hybrid car that can have electricity or or or or
- 28:15kind of petrol. Yeah.
- 28:17It's got two sources and and effectively you could say right
- 28:21for alertness and vigilance. The shallow chest breathing kind
- 28:25of makes sense because you can kind of breathe more rapidly,
- 28:28but for what they would. Call the rest and digest and.
- 28:32And the calming side, the diaphragmatic breath is there
- 28:35and, and, and I've seen that for people that haven't been used to
- 28:38breathing from the diaphragm, it's a tricky thing to do.
- 28:41It is the muscle. The muscle isn't used to kind of
- 28:43breathing in that way. So the way I'm trying to imagine
- 28:46it is you have the diaphragm, just imagine a bit of string at
- 28:49the bottom of it. Just imagine pulling that bit of
- 28:52string to pull the diaphragm down, and then when you breathe
- 28:55out, just release it to allow the air to come back.
- 28:58Don't actually breathe out. Don't use your muscles to
- 29:01breathe out. Just relax to allow that
- 29:03diaphragm to come back up and I'm holding it in the wrong
- 29:06place. But and just imagine any
- 29:07breathing, just put in a bit of string that's pulling that down.
- 29:11That's interesting. That's a good metaphor.
- 29:13I I use a slightly different approach, and that is that I
- 29:15know if I tell them to breathe from the diaphragm, it doesn't
- 29:18make sense. Instead, I tell them to breathe
- 29:20out and then continue breathing out.
- 29:22So they create a vacuum and then when they breathe in, they have
- 29:24to breathe in from the diaphragm because there's nothing, there's
- 29:27nothing left in the lungs. So it's kind of like, and then
- 29:29it's like, now notice where you breath, you know, you breathe
- 29:31from, It's like, oh, it's down there.
- 29:33And now they, they found it. But it's that's.
- 29:35Because that that brings the mindfulness into it.
- 29:37Yeah, because. Because we breathe all the time.
- 29:40We breathe when we're asleep. We're kind of addicted to
- 29:41breathing. It's something we do without
- 29:43thinking. So when you put your mind to
- 29:46something. So if I said to you now just
- 29:49just notice the feeling of your feet on the floor, it's not
- 29:53something you'd have been aware of, but you'd point your
- 29:54direction to it and it it brings that awareness in.
- 29:58And that's so important in in self help for people to be aware
- 30:03of what's happening to them. Because a lot of the time
- 30:06they're lost in their thoughts, you know, a lot of anxieties in
- 30:09the future, a lot of regret and resentments in the past.
- 30:11So like just just being in the present so.
- 30:13Just be in the now. Anxiety is just a fear of what
- 30:17what hasn't happened. Yeah, yeah.
- 30:20And it's it's structurally very, very similar to kind of
- 30:22excitement. It's kind of what if something
- 30:26bad happened is anxiety? What if something good happens
- 30:29is excitement? Neither have happened yet, but
- 30:32they're they're kind of future pacing.
- 30:34And that's an example of how people are doing hypnosis to
- 30:36themselves. A lot of the time in my
- 30:38perception, anxiety is self hypnosis where your future
- 30:42pacing an undesirable outcome. It's it's, it's it's they're
- 30:45doing hypnosis to. Themselves.
- 30:46I mean, there is someone, I mean we mentioned his name earlier on
- 30:49Anthony Jackwin, who said all hypnosis is self hypnosis.
- 30:52There's a lot, a lot of truth to that.
- 30:54And it's interesting you you mentioned reality is plastic
- 30:56because the, the very podcast that we're on now, there's a
- 30:59couple of sentences he has in reality in plastic where he
- 31:01talks about that. If you're going to be a
- 31:03hypnotist, you have to be the hypnotist.
- 31:06And and I and I totally stole that from him.
- 31:08That's and I've told him that one.
- 31:10It was an interesting. Title of chapter 2.
- 31:13Be the hypnotist. Be the hypnotist exactly that,
- 31:17Graham, it's great to have you on the show.
- 31:18You're, I, I, I know you mentioned you were going to be
- 31:21attending the Irish Hypnotherapy Conference and I, I believe
- 31:24you're going to be presenting at the UK hypnosis.
- 31:26But if, if people want to kind of learn more about you, is
- 31:28there a website, is there any social media?
- 31:30Is there any places that they can kind of find you?
- 31:33Rapidchangehypnosis.co.uk head there in a couple of weeks, it's
- 31:37been rewritten. It'll be a lot better.
- 31:38But yeah, it's a rapid change hypnosis.co.uk Rapid change
- 31:42hypnosis on Facebook at Rapid change hypnosis on YouTube or
- 31:48rapid change hypnosis on LinkedIn.
- 31:49And one kind of thing before you go, because you you have got a
- 31:52podcast and I'll put a link to that podcast.
- 31:54Tell us about the podcast and and the kind of people you have
- 31:57on your podcast. So the podcast is called Beyond
- 31:59a Couch and I'm talking to other, not just hypnotherapists.
- 32:04I've had conversations with some psychotherapists, with energy
- 32:09healers, recce workers, the woo woo stuff as I call it.
- 32:15The idea is we're talking about certain subjects on each one.
- 32:19So there's a podcast with ADHD. There's a very, very good one,
- 32:22Howard Cooper on anxiety, been chatting with Bob Burns about
- 32:26the Swan. So it's all different aspects of
- 32:28hypnotherapy and how it can help you because I firmly believe
- 32:32that hypnotherapy can help everyone.
- 32:35However, I'm also totally aware that there are people who are
- 32:39resistant or a little bit worried or dubious or sceptical
- 32:45about hypnosis hypnotherapy. So there's other alternative
- 32:49forms on there from the mainstream psychotherapists or
- 32:54psychologists to oh, I like the idea of burning wood and the
- 33:01imaginary waves and this that and that, the energies.
- 33:04So there could be something for everyone on there, but it gives
- 33:06a good insight into the actual topics as well because those
- 33:11that I'm talking to have had real life experience of dealing
- 33:15with those issues as well or using certain protocols.
- 33:21And so they can go quite in depth with them.
- 33:23So it's called Beyond the Couch. It's on YouTube soon to go onto
- 33:28other platforms as well, but I'm just getting all out on YouTube
- 33:30first. So find out Beyond the Couch and
- 33:33don't forget to subscribe to the channel as well.
- 33:36Absolutely. We'll put the links in the in
- 33:38the show notes. And if you want to hear more of
- 33:40Graham, check out his website, check out the podcast.
