- 0:01Speaker 1: We now turn to the Springfield Sun to bring the
- 0:03news from in and around Washington County. The reader today
- 0:07is Amy Jones Timmony. We begin with the addition dated Wednesday,
- 0:11March nineteenth, twenty twenty five. As a reminder, Lady Eli
- 0:16is a reading service intended for people who are blind
- 0:19or have other disabilities that make it difficult to read
- 0:22printed material. Local fire departments receive improved ISSO ratings by
- 0:29Jane Reid Cline March nineteenth, twenty twenty five. One of
- 0:34the many factors to determine the cost of homeowner and
- 0:37renter insurance is the local fire department's Insurance Services Office
- 0:42or ISSO rating. Local residents are sure to be pleased
- 0:47with the ratings recently reported. Washington County, is Springfield, and
- 0:51Willisburg fire departments are evaluated in the fall of twenty
- 0:55twenty four and receive their scores in the early March.
- 0:59Macville Fired Afy apartment will be evaluated later this spring.
- 1:03Valuations are conducted every five years. In twenty twenty, Washington County, Springfield,
- 1:08and Willisburg were all given an ISO rating of five
- 1:11on a scale of one to ten, with one being
- 1:14the best and ten, the worst in the most recent evaluations.
- 1:18Washington County Fire Department remains study with a rating of five.
- 1:22Springfield and Willisburg fire departments each improved to an ISO
- 1:26rating of four. Fire Chiefs Mike Mullahan, Forest Curricio, and
- 1:31Jesse Carting are working to continue to improve those scores
- 1:35even more. Mullahan said one of the key factors that
- 1:39is hurting the Washington County Fire departments score is response
- 1:43time to remote areas of the county. He said adding
- 1:46a substation in the East Texas area would help tremendously. Currently,
- 1:51the Washington County Fire Department has one substation in Fredericktown
- 1:55to better serve the western portion of the county. Mullahan
- 1:59said having one in the eastern part of the county
- 2:01is a high priority. He said the department is raising
- 2:05funds and applying for grants in hopes of constructing a
- 2:08substation in the near future. Should the substation be completed
- 2:12before the next evaluation in twenty twenty nine, thirty, Washington
- 2:17County will receive a new evaluation upon completion of the project.
- 2:22Another concern is the incoming distillery. While the county's ladder
- 2:26truck is more than adequate for other structures in the
- 2:29city and county. It is not sufficient for the taller
- 2:32rick houses being constructed just outside of Springfield. Mullahan and
- 2:36Curricio brought this concern to the Springfield City Council in
- 2:40the fall, requesting permission to pursue a grant for the
- 2:43purchase of a bigger ladder truck. Curricuo and Mullahan have
- 2:47applied for two grants for the purchase of trucks, one
- 2:50for the ladder truck and one for an engine. Willisburg
- 2:54purchased a new tanker engine combo in December of twenty
- 2:57twenty four. Quote, we are all looking for grants, mulahan said.
- 3:02The departments recently received a three thousand dollars state training
- 3:06grant and have applied for a grant to purchase air
- 3:09tanks in all the departments. But it takes more than
- 3:11equipment to keep the departments functioning efficiently. Quote. Communication is key,
- 3:17said Carney. Our dispatchers do a great job. The chief said.
- 3:21The new dispatch radio system has helped tremendously as they
- 3:25no longer need to switch their radios as they moved
- 3:27from one tower to another. Previously, there were sixteen channels,
- 3:31and the chiefs said they were all whole. Additionally, they
- 3:34had to switch channels frequently to communicate with the new system.
- 3:39There is just one channel that efficiently handles all radio communication,
- 3:43since all dispatch and communication is done through the Washington
- 3:46County nine to one to one dispatch center. All departments
- 3:50received the same score on that subsection of the ISO evaluation,
- 3:56or I should say they received the same score. The
- 4:00communications scored nine point twenty five of a possible ten
- 4:03and near perfect score. Quote. The Sheriff's office does a
- 4:07great job getting there and letting us know what we
- 4:10have end of quote, Malahan said. The chiefs said. Another
- 4:14great act that they have is a mutual aid agreement.
- 4:17The four departments work together assisting each other for the
- 4:20benefit of all. The three fire chiefs that another concern
- 4:24highlighted in the evaluations is the need for more volunteers
- 4:28at all the departments. Recently, the fire departments began paying
- 4:32firefighters for each run. Quote it's not a lot, the
- 4:36chiefs said, but it covers their expenses. End of quotes. Quote.
- 4:40We want the community. We want to think the community
- 4:43for backing us. Mulahan and Curricuio said, just being their matters.
- 4:47End of quotes. They also offered a few tips for family.
- 4:51Have a meeting place outside the home in case of fire,
- 4:54so you know everyone is accounted for. Have a fire drill.
- 4:58We have fire drills at school and work. Have one
- 5:01at home so everyone knows what to do once outside.
- 5:04Don't go back in. Let us go get your pets.
- 5:10City and County proclaimed April as Child Abuse Prevention Month
- 5:14by Jane Rey Kline March nineteenth, twenty twenty five. Springfield
- 5:19Mayor Chris Essex and Washington County Judge Executive Tim Graves
- 5:22signed a joint proclamation on Monday, March tenth, declaring April
- 5:28as Child Abuse Prevention Month in Springfield and Washington County.
- 5:33Sue clements from the Washington County Homemakers presented the Fiscal
- 5:37Court with various statistics and facts about child abuse and
- 5:40neglect and asked for the proclamation. The homemakers will again
- 5:44place banners and pinbrols in front of the Washington County
- 5:47Courthouse to promote awareness of the problem. ABC Administrator Tommy
- 5:52Smith reported that six businesses in Washington County have been
- 5:56approved for liquor licenses. The first of those licenses was
- 6:00shooed on Monday to Corner Market in Willisburg. Smith said
- 6:03the other five are expected within the next thirty days.
- 6:07Also approved where the Dollar Market and Dollar General Store
- 6:10in Willisburg, Easy Stops, Bourbon Trail Barbecue, and Lincoln Homestead
- 6:15golf Course. Smith reported no applications to have been received
- 6:19from the Bed and Breakfast or any other catering service.
- 6:23Washington County Fire Chief Mike mullihan presented the court with
- 6:27the latest ISO report on the county's fire department, which
- 6:31we covered in a previous article. Judge Graves reported to
- 6:36magistrates and the construction of the new Emergency Services building
- 6:40that is progressing well and the contractor estimates complete or
- 6:44estimates completion by August sixth. Graves also reported that an
- 6:48arm of a tire loader at the landfill is bent.
- 6:52The bend in the arm caused another part to break.
- 6:55Two weeks after the broken part was replaced, the bend
- 6:57caused a new part to break as well. After much
- 7:00discussion about whether to straighten the bent arm or replace it,
- 7:04magistrates voted to replace both arms at a cost of
- 7:07twenty eight thousand dollars. However, after the meeting, Graves learned
- 7:11that replacement arms would not be available for at least
- 7:14a year. Graves said the bent arm will be straightened
- 7:18to prevent further damage to the loader, which is used
- 7:21daily at the landfill. The next regularly scheduled meeting of
- 7:26the Washington County Fiscal Court will be Friday, March twenty eighth,
- 7:30at nine a m. Corner Market receives first WC liquor
- 7:36license by Daily Cline March sixteenth, twenty twenty five. Corner
- 7:41Market will be the first so legally sell alcohol in
- 7:44Washington County. Washington County issued its first liquor license on Monday,
- 7:48March tenth, just one hundred and twenty days after the
- 7:51county voted to allow liquor sales in the county. And
- 7:55most of what is in this article was also covered
- 7:58in the Fiscal Court news that I just reported a
- 8:01few minutes ago. It just wanted to pass them along.
- 8:07Bardstown Schools settled with former students over Dale's alleged misconduct
- 8:12by Kitlin Norris Paxton Media Group March nineteenth, twenty twenty five.
- 8:17Four former students have reached settlements with Bardtown City schooled
- 8:21over the alleged sexual misconduct of former Bardstown High School
- 8:25coaching teacher Jeremy Dale. Last Friday, the Career Journal reported

- 9:03given to the school two years ago. Two of the
- 9:06former students worked as student workers in the district's Tiger Den,
- 9:10of which Dale was their supervisor. This suit alleges quote
- 9:14Dale's subjected plaintiffs and other co op employees to unwanted

- 9:46participation in the activities described and as she moved about
- 9:50the school during the regular course of her school day
- 9:53end of quote. The Courier Journal reported that through open
- 9:57record request VCS settled with all POE students whom had

- 10:08other students settled with the district in December twenty twenty four.
- 10:12One former student included in the original report of alleged
- 10:15misconduct appears to have not filed against the district. The
- 10:19joint lawsuit from two former students was dismissed from court
- 10:23this February. The Courier Journal reported the women settled with
- 10:26the district last December for nearly one hundred twenty thousand

- 10:59they would not file a se suit related to Dale
- 11:01as it pertains to claims of misconduct as a former
- 11:04student of BCS. The Kentucky Standard has reached out to

- 18:24opens at the Opera House by Jane reen Kline March
- 18:27nineteen to twenty twenty five, Central Kentucky Theater or c
- 18:32KT brings yet another enjoyable performance to the stage of
- 18:36the Supremefield Opera House. Bright Starr opened on Friday, March
- 18:40fourteenth with a talented cast of local and regional performers.
- 18:44The c KT website describes the play as quote inspired
- 18:48by a true story and featuring the Tony nominated score
- 18:51by Steve Martin and Eddie Brickle. Broadway's Bright Star tells
- 18:55a sweeping tale of love and redemption set against the
- 18:58rich backdrop of the AMers himself in the nineteen twenties
- 19:02and forties. Bride Star is the story of one woman,
- 19:05Alice Murphy, at two different points in her life, the
- 19:08first when she is a wild young thing growing up
- 19:11and falling in love, barefoot and care free in the
- 19:14Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. The second when she
- 19:17is a well to do magazine editor in Asheville. Twenty
- 19:20two years later, when Alice meets the young soldier just
- 19:23home from World War Two, he awakens her desire to
- 19:27understand her past, and what she finds has the power
- 19:30to transform her life forever. With beautiful melodies and powerfully
- 19:35moving characters, the story unfolds as a rich tapestry of
- 19:39deep emotion, an uplifting theatrical journey that holds you tightly
- 19:44in its grasp. Bride Star is as refreshingly genuine as
- 19:47it is daringly hopeful. It's the beautiful story of love
- 19:51lost and found set to incredible bluegrass music. Bride Star
- 19:56was nominated for five Tony Awards, six Drama Deaths Awards,
- 20:00and seven Outer Critics Circle Awards. C k T will
- 20:04be performing Bright Star again this Friday, March twenty first
- 20:08through Sunday, March twenty third, and tickets were still available
- 20:12as of press time. The game of gratitude and opinion
- 20:19piece by David B. Whitlock, Life Mattered. We sit silently
- 20:25at the drop off line at school, still dark outside
- 20:28with a time change. Car lights in front of us,
- 20:30flickering the kids. Eddie Emming upset that the outfit she
- 20:34picked out the night before didn't look as good as
- 20:36in the morning. Eli's telling her to get over it.
- 20:40I choose to ignore this minor skirmish, though I know
- 20:43that never in the history of siblings has a little
- 20:45sister quotes gotten over it, because her older brother told
- 20:48her to get over it. And I was not as
- 20:51chipper as usual, tired and entertaining serious second thoughts about
- 20:55my choices for fasting during less then a random idea quote,
- 21:00let's thank God for the things money can't buy. End
- 21:03of quote. I announced silence from my passengers, so I
- 21:07started it quote I'm thankful I can drive you too,
- 21:10little munchkins to school. End of quotes. To my surprise,
- 21:14they watched on. Emmy ventured first quote love at tad general,
- 21:20but a start quote that's good, Emmy, I encouraged her,
- 21:24glancing out the car window. ELI seconded her with quote
- 21:28the moon back to my turn quote good health, I said,
- 21:32I'm thankful I enjoy good health. End of quote, quote
- 21:36the Trees study. By continuing the game, my teachers, Emmy
- 21:40quickly matched him. We have the discussion about games money
- 21:45can and can't buy. Money can buy the ice cream,
- 21:48but not the taste to enjoy it. It takes money
- 21:51to go on vacation, but we have to have the
- 21:53health to travel. Money by baseball uniforms, but not the
- 21:57ability to hit the ball, although we can pay for
- 22:00batting lessons that might help. Back and forth we went
- 22:03until I saw the cars in front of us beginning
- 22:05to move. It's amazing how giving thanks changes our attitude
- 22:09in an instant. We can move from criticisms to encouragement,
- 22:13bore them to engagement, neutral to active quote. Remember things
- 22:18go better when we are thankful. I reminded them, just
- 22:22as they opened their car doors and scoot it out,
- 22:24whispering a prayer as I drove away that our little
- 22:27game would have a positive effect. Repeated studies have shown
- 22:31that regularly practicing an attitude of gratitude has numerous mental
- 22:36and physical benefits. It can reduce anxiety, which can lessen depression,
- 22:40and improve sleep quality, which has a variety of health benefits,
- 22:44including the most obvious mental alertness and physical energy. It
- 22:48stands to reason that practicing gratefulness can, as studies have
- 22:52repeatedly shown, improve relationships and increase our overall happiness. Often,
- 22:57the most beautiful offerings of gratitude of merged from the
- 23:00ugliest circumstances. I thought of one of my favorite quotes
- 23:04of gratitude from Michael J. Box, who lives with Parkinson's diges.
- 23:09Quote with gratitude, optimism is sustainable. If you can find
- 23:13something to be grateful for, then you'll find something to
- 23:16look forward to, and you carry on. In a quote
- 23:19he said in an interview, quote you carry on. Gratitude
- 23:24gives us a perspective that enables us to carry on
- 23:27in a healthy, positive way, even if we aren't feeling
- 23:30well or living in delightful circumstances. Exiting the school parking lot,
- 23:36I imagined a new board game, Gratitude for the Things
- 23:39Money Can't Buy. Each player would have to identify something
- 23:43money could not buy within three seconds without repeating another
- 23:48player's item of gratitude before moving on to the next
- 23:50square on the board. One player could jump another player
- 23:54and get more points it's the start, I thought, and
- 23:56maybe by refining it, I could present an unshark tank
- 24:00become a millionaire. I laughed at myself for entertaining the
- 24:04silly idea of making money for a board game on
- 24:08how to be thankful for the themes money can't buy
- 24:11one thing I immediately did. Instead of focusing on what
- 24:14I had decided to give up during WENT, I added
- 24:17something A renewed commitment to the daily practice of gratitude.
- 24:22The one sustainable habit I could maintain that would generate
- 24:25positivity for all the other habits. The one card I
- 24:29could play that's guaranteed to empower me to carry on
- 24:32in difficult time through the board game of life. Gratitude.
- 24:37Now that's a game we can all play where all
- 24:40the participants are winners. Wedding Anniversary by Ja Kline, March nineteen,
- 24:46twenty twenty five. And actually this is written by Ken Zegla.
- 24:53It's coming up on my wedding anniversary with Sunday this month.
- 24:56It's our thirty six. I feel like I should do
- 24:59something nice for a woman. That is were are now
- 25:01five adult children as the keeper of Birthdays, Christmas and
- 25:04Easter of them their spouses and their grandchildren. I sort
- 25:08of take care of myself, though she says that is
- 25:11a full time job as well. But I'm not very
- 25:14good at this sort of name, so I like to
- 25:15go down to park few it game and run it
- 25:17past the cashiers. I've found those ladies are some of
- 25:20the smartest folks I know. I saw Pat there the
- 25:24other day and said, my wedding anniversary is coming up,
- 25:26and I'm curious's what you think I should do for it?
- 25:29Pat said, Well, all women likes to go out to
- 25:31eat to a nice restaurant. Have you thought about that? Yeah?
- 25:34But McDonald's dollar menu isn't what it used to be.
- 25:37McDonald I met a real restaurant with waiters and waitresses,
- 25:40not somewhere where they ask you if you want fries
- 25:43with that. Wow. I never realized what expensive taste you had. Pat,
- 25:47I like to consider McDonald's as the gourmet choice of
- 25:49the fast food industry. After all, over seventy million people
- 25:53serve daily. Can't be wrong. Well, if I were you,
- 25:56I think about that location over again. Have you thought
- 25:59about sending her a dozen red roses for that special day? Oh?
- 26:03You must think I'm made of money. Pat Besides, they
- 26:05die in a week. I always get her a nice
- 26:07house plan each year. Well, a plant can be nice,
- 26:10But what do you get her? Is it a magnolia, camelia, orchid? No,
- 26:15none of that. I like to get her the same
- 26:17thing every year. Well, what is that at cheaped? You
- 26:20mean that weird a leaky green stuff that grows in
- 26:22the shape of flower pots to resemble people and animals. Yep,
- 26:27I can see that you're a connoisseur of plant life
- 26:29as well. Passed. How does that go over not as
- 26:33well as you think. I might have to rethink this
- 26:35idea this year anyway. Why well, they ran out of
- 26:39trumpet Kenny. You are truly the last of great romantics.
- 26:43I know, Pat that I would do anythin for Cindy.
- 26:46I'd climb mountains, clim oceans and cross the desert for
- 26:49that woman. That is just the kind of husband I am.
- 26:51There are no limits when it comes to that. Sindy.
- 26:54When are you taking her to dinner next Friday? If
- 26:57it doesn't rain. I hope McDonald's is not the same
- 27:01writer's notes. Just kidding, Cindy, Love you babe, Happy anniversary,
- 27:05and you are loved for all you do for our families.
- 27:07That she had Pat is also in the mail. Also
- 27:10that conversation with Pat may not have happened. If Pat
- 27:13wants to see me, then it definitely didn't happen or
- 27:17it didn't happen. About this page. The opinions expressed on
