- 0:28Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:31OK, so in our second of the series of holidays, we are
- 0:36talking about food because food is such a major part of our
- 0:41holidays and boy, it's the pinnacle of what irritates
- 0:46people. So funny story, I grew up in a
- 0:49house that always had very traditional.
- 0:52Thanksgiving food. But the food was always a very
- 0:56big stressed point for my mother because creating the food,
- 1:00nothing ever came out on time. And her and my father, the the
- 1:04only fights that I really saw them have around the holidays
- 1:07had to do with the food and the fact that nothing came out on
- 1:11time. And my mother would be.
- 1:13Incapable of getting the Turkey to come out at the same time as
- 1:17all the vegetables. And my father would be waiting
- 1:19and the Turkey would not be done.
- 1:21And my father's like, how come we don't have the Turkey?
- 1:23Where's the Turkey? Where's the Turkey?
- 1:25And he kept getting more and more frustrated with the fact
- 1:27that there was no Turkey happening.
- 1:29And it was, it was a very, very uncomfortable situation for my
- 1:33mother. And as an adult woman now I
- 1:35understand how hard it is to plan all that.
- 1:38And it it is not fun food. We spend hours and hours and
- 1:44hours and hours preparing the food and it's done in 10
- 1:47minutes, 15 minutes and then boom, you're everybody's gone.
- 1:52So there's a big effort. And depending upon how you
- 1:58capture reward, it could be a little reward, it could be very
- 2:01rewarding just to watch everybody eat it, but it still
- 2:03can be very frustrating. So I am.
- 2:07Asking everybody to stop and pause and look and say, OK, if
- 2:11you were to do this in a very mindful way, if you were
- 2:14thinking very mindfully and you were focusing on the fact that
- 2:17I'm going to be thoughtful about prepping the food, I'm going to
- 2:21be thoughtful and joyful about all the chopping and the cooking
- 2:25and doing everything, I'm going to have music on.
- 2:28I'm going to set myself up around the food so that I feel
- 2:32good about it from beginning to end.
- 2:36It could possibly be wildly different.
- 2:38So there's there's a very profound thing that you can
- 2:44learn in doing the mundane tasks.
- 2:47And mundane tasks are something that's most people you know
- 2:51don't want to do it because they're like, oh, this is so
- 2:54stupid. It's so trivial.
- 2:55It's mundane. But in the mundane, you find
- 2:58mindfulness. In the mundane, you find peace.
- 3:01In the mundane, you're just doing them, and your brain can
- 3:04rest. Your hands are working, you're
- 3:05expending energy, and there's greatness in it, but you have to
- 3:09look for it. So for me, whether it's cooking
- 3:14or I'm never really cooking, let's be honest about that.
- 3:17Although I do do Thanksgiving, if I have to have it at my
- 3:21house, I do do that. But I follow cookbooks and I do
- 3:24follow this exact strategy that I'm telling you all about.
- 3:27I have the music on. I read the recipe 75 times.
- 3:31I make sure I'm very focused and intentional.
- 3:34I do one thing at a time. I'm not scrambling and it does
- 3:38take me a lot longer than most people, but I make it something
- 3:42that is more of a mindfulness practice for me.
- 3:45Than anything and by the time I'm done I can feel completely
- 3:48satisfied because I I actually created peace in my head and I
- 3:52didn't allow myself to lose my my mind in the process.
- 3:57So you can try that because it definitely works.
- 4:01And also the other thing about food besides the preparation
- 4:04besides all of that is. There are two big things.
- 4:07One, don't look for compliments, OK?
- 4:09Be proud of yourself. Don't look for compliments.
- 4:11And this is my weakest point when it comes to this stuff
- 4:14because I'm not good at cooking. So when I cook, I expect my
- 4:18husband to like, ring bells, jump up and down, tell me how
- 4:21awesome it is. And it's ridiculous.
- 4:24And I know that, OK? And if he listens to this, he'll
- 4:27laugh because he knows I I mean, I know.
- 4:29I know that I want that. I'm like the Gold Star girl.
- 4:32I want the gold stars for the food.
- 4:35But don't expect them, because then you'll be disappointed if
- 4:37you don't get them, and then it's just something else to
- 4:40carry over and ruin the day, so no expectations.
- 4:43And the third one is all the people who have different issues
- 4:47with food. So it is imperative that ahead
- 4:50of time you make a list of everybody that's going to be
- 4:53with you, and you write down. If they have any food allergies,
- 4:58food challenges, can't have something, don't like something,
- 5:01whatever it is. And then ask everybody that's
- 5:04going to be at your dinner, what is their favorite thing?
- 5:07What is their favorite dish? What is it that they look
- 5:10forward to so that you make sure you're giving them something
- 5:14that you know they're going to enjoy?
- 5:17That is a super important piece of the puzzle because then
- 5:20everybody's going to feel like it, it matters to them.
- 5:23You could even go so far as to create little favorite signs and
- 5:27put them in each dish. So because this could be a this,
- 5:30you know, a little sign inside the stuffing that says favorite
- 5:33of Patty and this one is favorite of Nick or whatever,
- 5:37you can show that you took the time to do it that way.
- 5:41And it also takes a lot of stress off of you to know you
- 5:44took care of each person individually.
- 5:47OK my friends, it's getting big now.
- 5:49We're on to day three, so I will see you tomorrow.
- 5:52I hope you have a blessed day. Bye.
