- 0:00As with all things that are considered for the first time,
- 0:04new concepts appear difficult to grasp.
- 0:08Cognitive scientists have shown through studies they have done
- 0:11that the brain builds grooves through which thoughts flow
- 0:14smoothly. These grooves develop over time
- 0:18through repeated attempts. The concept of the evolution of
- 0:22consciousness goes far beyond the concept of the evolution of
- 0:26forms. Even the evolution of forms has
- 0:29taken over 150 years to have even general acceptance, and
- 0:33considerable holdouts remain who reject the very idea of
- 0:37evolution. A yet further extension is the
- 0:41idea that the individual psychic being the soul's projection into
- 0:45the external world, accumulates the essence of experiences
- 0:50across multiple lifetimes as it develops and gains maturity, As
- 0:55most people have not had the opportunity to reflect deeply on
- 1:00the significance of the individual and the mechanism
- 1:04that carries the universal manifestation forward.
- 1:08Thus, when Triorobindo combines all three of these concepts into
- 1:13a coordinated interrelationship, it is difficult to grasp for
- 1:18those considering it for the first time.
- 1:22The Mother clearly and concisely explains the significance in her
- 1:26response to a disciple grappling with these concepts.
- 1:31A disciple inquires about the citation from the Life Divine
- 1:35cited in the immediately prior page.
- 1:38Quote. It is difficult to understand.
- 1:41Sweet Mother. End Quote.
- 1:44The Mother responds. Quote.
- 1:47Ah, if you take terrestrial history, all the forms of life
- 1:52have appeared one after another in a general plan, a general
- 1:56program, with the addition always of a new perfection and a
- 2:02greater consciousness. Take just animal forms, for that
- 2:07is easier to understand. They are the last before man.
- 2:12Each animal that appeared had an additional perfection in its
- 2:15general nature. I don't mean in all the details
- 2:20a greater perfection than the preceding ones.
- 2:23And the crowning point of the ascending March was the human
- 2:26form, which for the moment, from the point of view of
- 2:29consciousness, is the form most capable of manifesting
- 2:33consciousness. That is, the human form at its
- 2:37height, at the height of its possibilities, is capable of
- 2:42more consciousness than all preceding animal forms.
- 2:47This is one of nature's ways of evolution.
- 2:51Sri Robindo told us last week that this nature was following
- 2:55an ascending progression in order to manifest more and more
- 2:59the divine consciousness contained in all forms.
- 3:02So with each new form that it produces, nature makes a form
- 3:08capable of expressing more completely the spirit which this
- 3:12form contains. But if it were like this, a form
- 3:17comes, develops, reaches its highest point and is followed by
- 3:22another form. The others do not disappear, but
- 3:27the individual does not progress.
- 3:30The individual dog or monkey, for instance, belongs to a
- 3:34species which has its own peculiar characteristics.
- 3:39When the monkey or the man arrives at the height of its
- 3:42possibilities, that is, when a human individual becomes the
- 3:46best type of humanity, it will be finished.
- 3:51The individual will not be able to progress any farther.
- 3:55He belongs to the human species. He will continue to belong to
- 3:59it. So from the point of view of
- 4:02terrestrial history, there is a progress, for each species
- 4:06represents a progress compared with the preceding species.
- 4:10But from the point of view of the individual, there is no
- 4:14progress. He is born, he follows his
- 4:18development, dies and disappears.
- 4:22Therefore, to ensure the progress of the individual, it
- 4:26was necessary to find another means.
- 4:29This one was not adequate. But within the individual
- 4:33contained in each form, there is an organization of consciousness
- 4:38which is closer to and more directly under the influence of
- 4:43the inner divine presence. And the form which is under this
- 4:47influence, this kind of inner concentration of energy, has a
- 4:53life independent of the physical form.
- 4:57This is what we generally call the soul or the psychic being,
- 5:02and since it is organized around the divine centre, it partakes
- 5:06of the divine nature, which is immortal, eternal.
- 5:11The outer body falls away and this remains throughout every
- 5:16experience that it has in each life.
- 5:19And there is a progress from life to life, and it is the
- 5:23progress of the same individual. And this movement complements
- 5:28the other in the sense that instead of a species which
- 5:31progresses relative to other species, it is an individual who
- 5:36passes through all the stages of progress of these species and
- 5:41can continue to progress even when the species have reached
- 5:45the limit of their possibilities and stay there or disappear.
- 5:50It depends on the case. But they cannot go any farther.
- 5:55Whereas the individual, having a life independent of the purely
- 5:59material form, can pass from one form to another and continue his
- 6:05progress indefinitely. That makes a double movement
- 6:10which completes itself, and that is why each individual has the
- 6:15possibility of reaching the utmost realization independent
- 6:19of the form to which he momentarily belongs.
