- 0:23Speaker 3: Welcome to Let's Talk with Carl Lee. Let's Talk is
- 0:26Speaker 3: probably presented by Attorney Frank Walker, Real Talk, Real Experience,
- 0:30Speaker 3: Real results, Frank Walker Law dot Com. Let that conversation
- 0:34Speaker 3: begin on Let's Talk.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Hello, ladies and gentlemen. This is Curly with Let's Talk
- 0:40Speaker 2: and I have my co host Lisa Odie with me today. Hello,
- 0:47Speaker 2: Hollis Lewis could not make it.
- 0:49Speaker 4: Yes, fine solo.
- 0:51Speaker 2: How have you? How have you dealt with the snow
- 0:55Speaker 2: and the cone?
- 0:56Speaker 5: Just like everybody else, I've hunkered down eight lots of carbs,
- 1:00Speaker 5: watch lots of Netflix series that I wanted to catch
- 1:03Speaker 5: up on, and just just you know, did the just
- 1:06Speaker 5: did the prayers that the power didn't go out? That
- 1:08Speaker 5: was our biggest worry during the ice storm.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Yeah, that was I think that was pretty much probably everybody.
- 1:13Speaker 2: So I didn't care like how much of anything we
- 1:16Speaker 2: got right, just you know, please don't let the power
- 1:20Speaker 2: no right, you have.
- 1:21Speaker 4: To pray, pray to the power Gouds.
- 1:22Speaker 5: Every time it flickered, we would just like go, both
- 1:25Speaker 5: of us would just look at each other, and then
- 1:26Speaker 5: it came back on.
- 1:27Speaker 4: So we were we were blessed that.
- 1:29Speaker 2: We were pretty fortunate too. Yeah, we didn't have we
- 1:31Speaker 2: didn't really have any flickers or anything like that, like
- 1:34Speaker 2: the oh wow, really not any time that we were
- 1:38Speaker 2: worried about, you know, any kind of electricity or anything.
- 1:42Speaker 2: But man, that when that rain came and the temperature dropped,
- 1:47Speaker 2: I don't think I've ever seen my driveway with that
- 1:50Speaker 2: much ice.
- 1:51Speaker 5: And still still there's ice everywhere. I mean, we're what
- 1:54Speaker 5: four days out and then we're still dealing still. Oh well,
- 1:58Speaker 5: let's hope it gets better spring spring come.
- 2:01Speaker 2: For sure for sure. Well, Lisa, we don't have our
- 2:06Speaker 2: other co host, Hollis Lewis. He was unable to make
- 2:08Speaker 2: it today. But you know, there's always been a conversation
- 2:15Speaker 2: around parents and their kids, right, you know, there's always
- 2:22Speaker 2: been this this this thing about dads coaching their sons
- 2:26Speaker 2: and all of them.
- 2:28Speaker 4: I know where you're going.
- 2:30Speaker 2: All of those things have always been like and I
- 2:35Speaker 2: think for the most part, everybody that's been in that
- 2:39Speaker 2: situation never wants to be that dad. Okay, and some
- 2:45Speaker 2: work really hard not to be. They're harder on their
- 2:47Speaker 2: son than they might be on anybody else, and hats
- 2:50Speaker 2: off to them for that. And then there's the other
- 2:52Speaker 2: ones who are pushing their kids regardless of how good
- 2:57Speaker 2: or great they are. They expect them to be.
- 3:01Speaker 6: Greater than top of the class, at the top of
- 3:04Speaker 6: the class, right right.
- 3:06Speaker 2: But I think I don't know if I can ever
- 3:09Speaker 2: remember any any notable individuals as notable.
- 3:17Speaker 4: Until now has.
- 3:21Speaker 2: As Dion Standers and his son Shudor.
- 3:24Speaker 5: He's very happy right now. According to social media. Did
- 3:29Speaker 5: you see him?
- 3:29Speaker 2: I did not see that.
- 3:31Speaker 5: He put it out there in all caps, in all
- 3:33Speaker 5: caps referring to his sons should door and I think
- 3:36Speaker 5: we're referring to the fact that he is going to
- 3:38Speaker 5: be playing in the Pro Bowl, right the flagged football
- 3:41Speaker 5: Pro Bowl. Okay, I know I had to say that,
- 3:45Speaker 5: but he put in all caps out there on social media.
- 3:48Speaker 4: I don't know if it was X or could have been.
- 3:50Speaker 5: But if he said God is good, so good in
- 3:53Speaker 5: all caps because his son will be starting for the
- 3:57Speaker 5: AFC in the Pro Bowl games plural, It's not just
- 4:03Speaker 5: the Pro Bowl, now, you know that, right, yeah, okay,
- 4:07Speaker 5: making sure our audience need that as well.
- 4:08Speaker 2: But okay, and again let me let me let me
- 4:13Speaker 2: clarify to your points.
- 4:15Speaker 5: Please do somebody needs to.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Or me for me, as a guy who who's been
- 4:25Speaker 2: extremely blessed to have had been selected to a Pro Bowl,
- 4:31Speaker 2: sure to go to three mm hmmm and look across
- 4:38Speaker 2: the field and look at the best players in the league, Yes,
- 4:43Speaker 2: of the a f C, look left and right of
- 4:46Speaker 2: the best players you know in the n f C.
- 4:51Speaker 2: And and and realizing that I'm in this line, You're
- 4:56Speaker 2: in this club. I'm in this club. And to say
- 5:02Speaker 2: that Chadore is now officially quote in that class bothers me.
- 5:12Speaker 4: Okay, I'm glad you started with that statement.
- 5:15Speaker 5: That was going to be a question for you, of course,
- 5:17Speaker 5: because we know how he landed in this position, and
- 5:21Speaker 5: it wasn't he wasn't first choice by far. He can
- 5:24Speaker 5: go down a long list of names that were probably
- 5:27Speaker 5: explored before they got to him.
- 5:31Speaker 4: His stats.
- 5:33Speaker 5: I'm not gonna can I throw a few out there
- 5:35Speaker 5: because we're giving Shador pro bowler status now he will
- 5:40Speaker 5: play in this game and he will be considered an
- 5:42Speaker 5: All Pro.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Like you, yes, like you?
- 5:43Speaker 5: Okay, So when I was looking at some of his
- 5:45Speaker 5: stats from this past year when he played for the Browns,
- 5:49Speaker 5: he was thirty fifth in the league in passing yards.
- 5:52Speaker 5: He was forty second in completions, forty first in his
- 5:57Speaker 5: passing rating. Okay, okay, I'm just gonna lay that out
- 6:02Speaker 5: there and leave it there for you, just just kind
- 6:04Speaker 5: of to absorb it and digest it in all those things.
- 6:07Speaker 5: But we know, and surely Dad knows, and surely Chadour
- 6:12Speaker 5: knows that this is kind of going to have a
- 6:16Speaker 5: hashtag this year, beside him being named a Pro Bowler,
- 6:20Speaker 5: because we know injuries took out some of the better
- 6:24Speaker 5: quarterbacks that would have been selected for the AFC. I mean, still,
- 6:27Speaker 5: Patrick Mahomes could have been selected, you know, Josh Allen
- 6:31Speaker 5: could have been another one. Right, Boonicks, even from Denver
- 6:36Speaker 5: probably would have been justified, right, yes, yes, yes, okay,
- 6:41Speaker 5: So let me let me let me just finish my
- 6:43Speaker 5: thought here. So is it is it that the game
- 6:48Speaker 5: and its honor has has become so diminished that we're
- 6:54Speaker 5: taking shador as the starting quarterback for the AFC?
- 6:57Speaker 4: Or is it marketability because of who he is and
- 7:00Speaker 4: his dad.
- 7:02Speaker 2: I'm going to probably say both, okay, because when when
- 7:12Speaker 2: when when I when I think Pro Bowl, okay, I'm
- 7:14Speaker 2: thinking the best players at their position. Sure, so let's
- 7:20Speaker 2: you know, you run through the quarterbacks and we all
- 7:22Speaker 2: know the names of all the top quarterbacks. Now some
- 7:26Speaker 2: of those guys, most of those guys even will probably
- 7:30Speaker 2: not be interested in playing for for whatever, for the
- 7:34Speaker 2: for the the lack of you want to be selected,
- 7:39Speaker 2: but you don't want to play, you know, for in
- 7:42Speaker 2: most cases, most players want to be selected, but they
- 7:46Speaker 2: don't want to play. They don't want they don't want
- 7:48Speaker 2: to risk of injuries and all of those kinds of things.
- 7:52Speaker 2: And and maybe to where they're trying to take it
- 7:55Speaker 2: because which I think is crazy. But you know, it
- 7:58Speaker 2: should be just the game, just the game. But what
- 8:02Speaker 2: bothers me in Chador's situation is and again I can
- 8:10Speaker 2: understand his dad's excitement about it. Sure you know that
- 8:15Speaker 2: that's natural. But I think also I would like to
- 8:23Speaker 2: think that Dion would also understand though, that this is
- 8:28Speaker 2: not this is not a He would not have been
- 8:35Speaker 2: satisfied by being a selected pick. Well beyond, because of
- 8:42Speaker 2: all the players who can't, all the quarters, all the
- 8:44Speaker 2: dbs who didn't want to play, and he all of
- 8:46Speaker 2: a sudden stepped in. I don't think he would have
- 8:49Speaker 2: wanted that. I think he would have only wanted to
- 8:53Speaker 2: be in that game if he was the top player,
- 8:58Speaker 2: if he earned it, if he was a top player
- 9:00Speaker 2: in the league.
- 9:01Speaker 5: So I'm gonna throw this question at you, then, Carl,
- 9:04Speaker 5: same what.
- 9:05Speaker 4: You just said.
- 9:06Speaker 5: Should he maybe have declined the invitation to you know that?
- 9:11Speaker 4: I mean Trevor, Trevor Lawrence.
- 9:13Speaker 5: Declined, he didn't think twice about it. So why do
- 9:16Speaker 5: you think Shador felt like it was okay to accept?
- 9:21Speaker 2: Well, I don't know how you turn it down, Lawrence. Well,
- 9:25Speaker 2: but but but again, he just declined it.
- 9:28Speaker 4: He didn't even have an injury. He just said, no,
- 9:30Speaker 4: I'm not doing it.
- 9:31Speaker 2: And again, I think where the Pro Bowl is as
- 9:34Speaker 2: a status of a game now, I think players who
- 9:38Speaker 2: are legitimate players are not interested in They don't need
- 9:42Speaker 2: that to add on to their career.
- 9:45Speaker 4: Okay, it's not the honor like it used to be.
- 9:48Speaker 2: I totally do not believe it's it's nice to say
- 9:52Speaker 2: I'm a pro bowler, I'm an All pro. That's that
- 9:56Speaker 2: gives you clout the game itself, not now, the game
- 10:02Speaker 2: itself today does not do anything for you. So if
- 10:09Speaker 2: you if you are Shador and you have a Pro
- 10:13Speaker 2: Bowl honor on your resume, it sticks there and it
- 10:20Speaker 2: stays there and people are thinking, you know, when your
- 10:26Speaker 2: career is over, you're like, oh, he made a Pro Bowl.
- 10:29Speaker 2: He must have been one of the best quarterbacks. Like
- 10:32Speaker 2: the league.
- 10:33Speaker 5: Football Pro Bowl, it's a little different. And I understand
- 10:37Speaker 5: the reason. I understand why the league had to kind
- 10:40Speaker 5: of I.
- 10:43Speaker 4: Don't.
- 10:43Speaker 2: I don't, and you know what I would.
- 10:44Speaker 5: I think it was to get players to participate, like because,
- 10:47Speaker 5: like you said, a lot of them decline it because
- 10:49Speaker 5: they don't want to take the risk of getting hurt.
- 10:51Speaker 5: And if it's flag football, I'm not.
- 10:55Speaker 2: I'm not coming. I don't want to make an NF
- 10:58Speaker 2: I don't want to have an NFL award. Okay, hear me,
- 11:01Speaker 2: I don't want an NFL award. That is saying to me,
- 11:06Speaker 2: I am one of the best corners in the league
- 11:09Speaker 2: and then and then you're gonna fly me somewhere to
- 11:13Speaker 2: go play flag football. That's not what I do.
- 11:18Speaker 5: And I wish the audience could see the look on
- 11:20Speaker 5: your face when you said flag football. I mean that
- 11:22Speaker 5: would be amazing if they could see it, you're not impressed. No,
- 11:29Speaker 5: I mean it's not interested in. I mean, I know
- 11:31Speaker 5: flag football is, it's a big thing. I mean it's coming,
- 11:35Speaker 5: it's up and coming. I know that the women have
- 11:36Speaker 5: their own league, right, some of the women and.
- 11:38Speaker 2: And and I love it. That's fine, that's fine, But
- 11:41Speaker 2: not for NFL, not for NFL football, because it's not
- 11:45Speaker 2: because you're you're you're you're creating a all star game
- 11:50Speaker 2: over with something that I don't do. I don't play
- 11:54Speaker 2: flag football. I play football. Right, If you want to
- 11:57Speaker 2: give me the honor of a Pro Bowl player, then
- 12:00Speaker 2: either let me play football or let's just do like
- 12:03Speaker 2: how we do here in the state. You have all state.
- 12:06Speaker 2: You just announce the names. There is gonna be done
- 12:08Speaker 2: with it, to be done with it.
- 12:09Speaker 4: That's a good point.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Why are you trying to play? Why don't you? Why
- 12:13Speaker 2: don't you just if you're gonna just select them. Yeah,
- 12:15Speaker 2: it's about the money. Everything is about the money.
- 12:19Speaker 4: They I mean, how much money could they possibly make
- 12:21Speaker 4: on this?
- 12:21Speaker 5: I mean, I know it's got It's on Tuesday. See
- 12:25Speaker 5: it's Tuesday, February third. Is that a typical day of
- 12:28Speaker 5: the week that they do it. I thought they did
- 12:29Speaker 5: it late.
- 12:30Speaker 2: I thought I would have assumed it would have been
- 12:32Speaker 2: a weekend. Well that's what I thought too, But I
- 12:35Speaker 2: would think if you do it on the weekend, you're
- 12:37Speaker 2: probably not gonna make any money because people are gonna
- 12:40Speaker 2: watch other sports. Yeah, you're competing, and you're competing with everything. Yeah,
- 12:44Speaker 2: so let's do it on a weekday, which makes no
- 12:48Speaker 2: sense for a quote all star game. But you got
- 12:52Speaker 2: but you gotta you gotta try to fit in and
- 12:55Speaker 2: get whatever audience that you can get. And I'm just
- 12:59Speaker 2: telling you, and and again, even if I had not
- 13:03Speaker 2: been a Pro Bowl player, there's zero chances that I
- 13:08Speaker 2: would think this is okay.
- 13:10Speaker 4: Yeah, that was going to be.
- 13:12Speaker 5: Like I wanted to know what you thought about having
- 13:15Speaker 5: a guy that had like six people that they asked
- 13:18Speaker 5: in front of him, or six at least six quarterbacks
- 13:22Speaker 5: either because of injury, couldn't participate, or they just flat
- 13:25Speaker 5: out said no, I'm not doing it.
- 13:27Speaker 2: And okay. And so if you get him, he's the
- 13:32Speaker 2: most notable player that you can get that you think
- 13:36Speaker 2: can draw attention to the game.
- 13:38Speaker 5: I think there are other quarterbacks that are more deserving
- 13:40Speaker 5: that probably would have said, yes, there had there had
- 13:44Speaker 5: to be.
- 13:44Speaker 4: I mean, in my mind there there's got to.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Be even to that degree. Let's say anybody who was
- 13:50Speaker 2: a backup quarterback who has had history of being a
- 13:55Speaker 2: good player could be there even before.
- 14:00Speaker 5: A rookie a rookie And you take offense that it's
- 14:03Speaker 5: a rookie because that's not typical, right.
- 14:05Speaker 2: It's not a lot of rookies who you got to
- 14:09Speaker 2: be beyond yes, to go as a rookie as a quarterback.
- 14:13Speaker 2: And I wish I would have looked this up, but yeah,
- 14:16Speaker 2: I don't think you never had a rookie quarterback in
- 14:21Speaker 2: any award. It's just just it's just too hard. And
- 14:26Speaker 2: and is it is it because and it is all
- 14:32Speaker 2: this because he's Dion's son or is this just he's
- 14:38Speaker 2: the guy that that's there? And see, to me, I
- 14:40Speaker 2: feel like it's Beyond's son. Yeah.
- 14:43Speaker 5: I think it goes back to the question I asked you,
- 14:44Speaker 5: Is it about the market marketability of him or is
- 14:47Speaker 5: it talent? Well, the stats tell you tell you which
- 14:51Speaker 5: one it is, right, Yes, basically, I mean numbers don't lie.
- 14:56Speaker 4: We've said that before on the show.
- 14:58Speaker 2: You know what else? You know, what else is me
- 15:01Speaker 2: knowing how the game is actually played, right, he could
- 15:05Speaker 2: do it. He could do extremely well in that game
- 15:10Speaker 2: because it's because of the way it has become.
- 15:14Speaker 5: And so that's maybe why they chose him, because they know.
- 15:18Speaker 4: I don't think that's.
- 15:19Speaker 2: Why they chose him. I think that he can he
- 15:22Speaker 2: can fit.
- 15:23Speaker 5: And so he'll pick up that part of the game
- 15:26Speaker 5: pretty easily.
- 15:27Speaker 2: He may even he may score. He may scramble and
- 15:30Speaker 2: go score touchdown or a couple or throw one and
- 15:33Speaker 2: all that kind of stuff. And it's gonna look good
- 15:36Speaker 2: because because it's the Pro Bowl and quote, it's the
- 15:40Speaker 2: best players in the league. But on the other side
- 15:45Speaker 2: of that, you I know, I know that in my
- 15:53Speaker 2: era of Pro Bowl opportunity from nineteen eighty three to
- 16:00Speaker 2: nineteen ninety four, he's not making not one of them,
- 16:03Speaker 2: not as a substitute, not as anything.
- 16:07Speaker 5: I'm in total agreement with you on this whole topic,
- 16:10Speaker 5: Like it blew my mind. But then I started, you know,
- 16:13Speaker 5: looking at some of the news media outlets and what
- 16:17Speaker 5: they were saying about how he got there, and it
- 16:20Speaker 5: was a combination of your better players were either injured
- 16:24Speaker 5: or they said no thanks. I think the next in
- 16:26Speaker 5: line after my homes and Knicks. I'm sorry, Josh Allen,
- 16:31Speaker 5: Justin Herbert was Drake may Well. Of course they're going
- 16:35Speaker 5: to the Super Bowl, so he's ineligible. And I don't
- 16:38Speaker 5: even think he would have played in it even if
- 16:40Speaker 5: he you know, they'd lost that game.
- 16:41Speaker 2: What do you think, I mean, he's not a rookie though,
- 16:45Speaker 2: I don't think so. I don't think so.
- 16:48Speaker 5: I know he's new, he's young, and he hasn't been
- 16:51Speaker 5: playing long.
- 16:51Speaker 2: But I think you'd have to go to every quarterback,
- 16:59Speaker 2: any vet in quarterback, And they said, if you've gone
- 17:03Speaker 2: to every you'd have to go to me. I'm thinking
- 17:06Speaker 2: they should go to should have gone to every starting quarterback, judge, Yes,
- 17:13Speaker 2: any one of those kinds of quarterbacks you could have
- 17:16Speaker 2: gone to and asked them first, there's Shador is not
- 17:22Speaker 2: ahead of any veteran quarterback in the league. He's just not.
- 17:29Speaker 5: So it has to be the fact that they feel,
- 17:32Speaker 5: like what you just said, that he fits the mold
- 17:35Speaker 5: for this type of Pro Bowl, so to speak, flag football,
- 17:39Speaker 5: this event.
- 17:43Speaker 2: I don't necessarily want to call it, you know, football
- 17:45Speaker 2: or a game, but it an event.
- 17:48Speaker 5: Well, so I'm guessing you're not going to tune in
- 17:51Speaker 5: on Tuesday, February third, check it out.
- 17:54Speaker 2: And no, I'm not No, I'm not at all. I
- 17:59Speaker 2: am and I can be a good one though. I'm
- 18:02Speaker 2: good at it. You know, I have you know, and
- 18:06Speaker 2: and unfortunately Coop let me have a mic so I
- 18:10Speaker 2: can hate even.
- 18:11Speaker 5: More dangerous territory we're entering here. Oh no, okay, all right,
- 18:19Speaker 5: Well I'll watch for Bath of Us.
- 18:21Speaker 4: How's that?
- 18:21Speaker 5: And I'll fill you in because I know you'll be
- 18:23Speaker 5: dying to know all the stats and how he how
- 18:26Speaker 5: he fared.
- 18:27Speaker 2: You know what he's gonna He's gonna fare good.
- 18:30Speaker 4: And that's gonna Yeah.
- 18:32Speaker 2: He's gonna fare good. He's going to do I think
- 18:35Speaker 2: he will do well. I'm not saying he doesn't have talent.
- 18:39Speaker 2: That that's not That's not what I'm trying to say.
- 18:43Speaker 2: But there is a there is a class that to me,
- 18:47Speaker 2: I would like to think that I was privileged to
- 18:50Speaker 2: be in. Right, you earned and I earned it. Right
- 18:55Speaker 2: and and whether and again you could work. I could
- 18:58Speaker 2: have worked as hard as I want wanted and never
- 19:01Speaker 2: made a pro bowl. I would have never said that.
- 19:05Speaker 2: I think I think that I was worthy of it.
- 19:08Speaker 2: But I worked hard enough got selected, and so I
- 19:13Speaker 2: know I worked hard enough and I got it, and
- 19:15Speaker 2: I was there as a starter. So I started in
- 19:18Speaker 2: all three of my Pro Bowls. And when when when
- 19:22Speaker 2: I look at a situation like this, here's a guy
- 19:26Speaker 2: who whose stats do not even come close to a
- 19:32Speaker 2: Pro Bowl quarterbacks stats. Right, if all these guys, all
- 19:39Speaker 2: these guys turned down that job or that opportunity, the
- 19:46Speaker 2: question we should be asking ourselves is what's going on?
- 19:50Speaker 2: What are they? What are they? What are these players lacking?
- 19:54Speaker 2: Or why are they turning it down?
- 19:57Speaker 5: Well, I mean, I think the question that's a legitimate question,
- 20:00Speaker 5: and I think you've already answered it. It's the fact
- 20:02Speaker 5: that they've they've they've downgraded it, they've made it a
- 20:05Speaker 5: flag fit. It's almost like a it's a watered down
- 20:09Speaker 5: version of what you played in. Right, and and and people,
- 20:13Speaker 5: the Pro Bowl was a hard sell anyway, We know that, right,
- 20:16Speaker 5: I mean, I'll give you that right to get an audience, yes,
- 20:19Speaker 5: But but now that they've even taken it down another level,
- 20:23Speaker 5: it's super hard. And so I think now they're struggling
- 20:27Speaker 5: maybe putting that you know, Shador Sanders name out there
- 20:31Speaker 5: to kind of get audience. You know, kind of get
- 20:33Speaker 5: that viewership up.
- 20:34Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 20:35Speaker 2: But and yeah, and that's and that's probably that's probably
- 20:40Speaker 2: a fact there that you that you make but you can't.
- 20:47Speaker 2: But but you're crazy to think that he's the guy
- 20:51Speaker 2: who is going to make that happen. Yeah, and again
- 20:55Speaker 2: and I get it. You think Dion's coming with that package? Okay?
- 20:58Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 21:00Speaker 2: Is that the.
- 21:01Speaker 5: Camera in the audience and there's proud Dad sitting there?
- 21:05Speaker 2: Is that enough to draw Let me ask you this question.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Is that enough to draw you to the game?
- 21:12Speaker 5: No, it never it's not enough to draw me. I
- 21:14Speaker 5: don't care who's playing. It could be Prince and it
- 21:18Speaker 5: could be Superman. I'm not interested in watching a flight
- 21:22Speaker 5: football game with NFL players.
- 21:25Speaker 4: I'm just not. I'm sorry. It's nothing against I'm not
- 21:28Speaker 4: knocking the sport.
- 21:29Speaker 2: I appreciate the effort to try to make it say
- 21:32Speaker 2: and shun and all that kind.
- 21:33Speaker 5: Of stuff, but it's not It's not what it was,
- 21:36Speaker 5: and it just is not something I'm interested in.
- 21:40Speaker 2: To be honest, would you say this? Would you say this?
- 21:43Speaker 2: Then it's really this is not a this is not
- 21:47Speaker 2: a Dion issue or is your door issue? As much
- 21:51Speaker 2: as this is the NFL as a whole. Sure, because
- 21:55Speaker 2: you you either. I mean, it's a it's a football.
- 22:00Speaker 2: I'm going to a Pro Bowl because of football, right,
- 22:04Speaker 2: I don't want to do anything other than football. I
- 22:07Speaker 2: don't want to do don't add anything to the football.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Just give me the football. Lests go and play.
- 22:12Speaker 5: If you went to the NBA All Star Game and
- 22:14Speaker 5: they play horse, yes instead, I'm stretching it a little bit,
- 22:21Speaker 5: but no, you are not. It's a watered down version
- 22:24Speaker 5: of what you want to see in an All Star
- 22:28Speaker 5: Pro Bowl type of atmosphere.
- 22:30Speaker 2: No, you're that's that's a great example. That's a great
- 22:33Speaker 2: example because who would be who would be interested in
- 22:37Speaker 2: watching that?
- 22:38Speaker 3: Not me?
- 22:39Speaker 4: I mean, yeah, I was kidding you. I won't be.
- 22:43Speaker 2: I won't watch it.
- 22:44Speaker 5: But I mean it's just you know, it's it is
- 22:47Speaker 5: what it is. And he is going to be starting
- 22:50Speaker 5: in the Pro Bowl and he'll be a he'll get
- 22:52Speaker 5: to go out and say he's a Pro Bowler just
- 22:54Speaker 5: like you.
- 22:55Speaker 2: So welcome to that. All right. So I'm gonna I'm
- 23:01Speaker 2: gonna we got a couple of different things that we
- 23:03Speaker 2: were going to talk about, but I'm gonna jump. I
- 23:05Speaker 2: wanted to talk about since we got the dad hun
- 23:09Speaker 2: kids in sports. Yeah, when we when you when you
- 23:15Speaker 2: start talking about like and and again, I work for
- 23:20Speaker 2: the City of South Charleston, and we and and Frank Mullins,
- 23:24Speaker 2: the mayor of South Charleston, does a great job with
- 23:30Speaker 2: supporting youth sports, you know. And you know, we've got
- 23:34Speaker 2: some sports that you know, kids that can't pay, they
- 23:36Speaker 2: don't have to pay. They you know, we we we
- 23:39Speaker 2: go out to try to support and make sure that
- 23:41Speaker 2: they are they're educated about the sport. If nothing else,
- 23:45Speaker 2: that's that's the most important thing. Sure, what I think
- 23:48Speaker 2: has happened into Well, can.
- 23:50Speaker 5: I throw a study out? Let me let me throw
- 23:52Speaker 5: this study out because I came across this. This this
- 23:53Speaker 5: study actually was the results of the study were released
- 23:57Speaker 5: in July, and I just happened to come across it
- 23:59Speaker 5: when I'm on the internet a few days ago, and
- 24:01Speaker 5: I thought it was kind of intrigued me, so I
- 24:03Speaker 5: kind of read the article. But this was actually the
- 24:07Speaker 5: results of a study conducted by the Center for Sports
- 24:10Speaker 5: Leadership and Learning, which is an institution that is based
- 24:15Speaker 5: in Dallas, Texas that for the past four or five years,
- 24:18Speaker 5: basically what you know they're they're trying to instill leadership
- 24:23Speaker 5: skills for coaches, for you know, people that sponsor youth
- 24:27Speaker 5: sports things of that nature, or actually all sports.
- 24:30Speaker 4: It doesn't necessarily have to be youth.
- 24:31Speaker 5: But they did a study on youth and what they
- 24:33Speaker 5: found was, and it was kind of alarming, seventy percent
- 24:36Speaker 5: of kids quit organized sports by the age of thirteen.
- 24:40Speaker 5: That's that's the study that they did in you Do
- 24:43Speaker 5: you think that's a true true facts, Yes.
- 24:46Speaker 2: Yes, and and and there's and there's still a lot
- 24:49Speaker 2: more that will go even earlier than that, you know,
- 24:53Speaker 2: just just being around you sports. You know, we you know,
- 24:58Speaker 2: the city of South Trust, like I said, answers youth
- 25:01Speaker 2: sports football, basketball, baseball, and we had one team, we
- 25:08Speaker 2: builded one team last season of three okay, so and
- 25:14Speaker 2: we and we literally had like I'm gonna say, maybe
- 25:19Speaker 2: fifteen players playing football where we should be having you know,
- 25:25Speaker 2: twenty twenty five per team in all three groups, you know.
- 25:30Speaker 2: And part of it has decreased, yes, and because and
- 25:35Speaker 2: part of it is because the winning and losing issue
- 25:39Speaker 2: and parents, you know, they get upset when their kids lose,
- 25:47Speaker 2: and the kids understand that reality and they don't want
- 25:52Speaker 2: to lose. But this is not this is not where,
- 25:55Speaker 2: This is not where. And I don't think youth football
- 25:58Speaker 2: or youth sports should really be about winning and losing.
- 26:03Speaker 2: I think it has some kind of way if we
- 26:06Speaker 2: don't change youth sports into competition just I want to
- 26:13Speaker 2: compete against you, right and I don't, and we don't.
- 26:16Speaker 2: The winning and losing does not have to matter.
- 26:19Speaker 5: That was something that they cited as one of the reasons.
- 26:22Speaker 4: Yes, okay.
- 26:23Speaker 5: And it was the fact that you know, if if
- 26:25Speaker 5: the kids aren't playing for the and the parents aren't
- 26:28Speaker 5: there for the right reasons, which is basically, you know,
- 26:30Speaker 5: to to find joy in the game, find joy in
- 26:34Speaker 5: the sport. Growth, you know, health, life, life lessons. You've
- 26:39Speaker 5: said that before, then you know that that's a reason
- 26:42Speaker 5: that it's it's it's it's coming down.
- 26:44Speaker 4: The numbers are coming down. They also gave four other reasons.
- 26:46Speaker 5: I want to get your opinion on these, Carl, because
- 26:48Speaker 5: you obviously coach, uh you know, youth sports. One they
- 26:52Speaker 5: said was burnout from the student or from the from
- 26:55Speaker 5: the athlete, which you just touched on that early specialization
- 27:00Speaker 5: and kind of putting them in a box too early
- 27:03Speaker 5: inequity which is the money part, and then what we
- 27:07Speaker 5: just touched on the loss of joy. Those were the
- 27:09Speaker 5: four main reasons that they feel like the numbers for
- 27:14Speaker 5: kids participating are coming down.
- 27:16Speaker 4: What's your opinion on this.
- 27:18Speaker 2: I would agree with every one of them, and probably
- 27:22Speaker 2: could add to the pressure from a parent to their
- 27:27Speaker 2: to that kid because I have a kid that's a
- 27:31Speaker 2: good size. I think I'm the dad who's played football.
- 27:37Speaker 2: I think he should be great because because of his
- 27:42Speaker 2: size and his physical his physical traits, But for whatever reason,
- 27:47Speaker 2: he's not m or So if he's not, I think
- 27:53Speaker 2: it's because he's not trying hard enough, or I need
- 27:58Speaker 2: to train him more, which is only going to deter
- 28:03Speaker 2: him to like the sport even more. He's gonna dislike
- 28:08Speaker 2: it more because he wants it. My issue me growing
- 28:14Speaker 2: up with my dad being a die hard football fan
- 28:19Speaker 2: and he pushed me beyond belief. But the only but
- 28:25Speaker 2: the issue with that was that I love football too,
- 28:31Speaker 2: and I wanted to be good. I wanted to get
- 28:34Speaker 2: to every next level that there possibly could be, and
- 28:38Speaker 2: my dad was part of that. So him making me
- 28:42Speaker 2: go out and do anything in the backyard, I was
- 28:47Speaker 2: actually okay with that. Sir, you know, I wasn't fighting
- 28:50Speaker 2: him against it, you know, I just hated that, you know,
- 28:55Speaker 2: I was never he never had given me enough to
- 28:57Speaker 2: say that I was good enough. I could always be better,
- 29:00Speaker 2: you know. And and but in hindsight, I needed to.
- 29:06Speaker 2: He was right. I needed to be better in every
- 29:08Speaker 2: level that I could be if I was going to
- 29:11Speaker 2: reach the dream that I was talking about wanting to be.
- 29:15Speaker 5: And see, I think I think that's a different kind
- 29:17Speaker 5: of pressure. And did he did he did he try
- 29:20Speaker 5: to categorize you at a young age or did he
- 29:22Speaker 5: just say play play football and figure it out?
- 29:25Speaker 2: He had no idea of what position I was to play, right,
- 29:28Speaker 2: He didn't have He didn't care if I was a quarterback,
- 29:30Speaker 2: running back.
- 29:32Speaker 5: I played guard my first You played a variety of
- 29:35Speaker 5: positions before you settled on safe. This is what you're saying, yes, okay,
- 29:38Speaker 5: And I think that's what they're saying.
- 29:40Speaker 2: And he never he dad never said anything about it.
- 29:44Speaker 2: He didn't care where I was playing, if I was
- 29:46Speaker 2: playing a position that my dad was was the kind
- 29:50Speaker 2: of man to say that the coach knows what he's doing,
- 29:53Speaker 2: so he's that's why he's there.
- 29:55Speaker 4: Yeah, And so I think what you're saying.
- 29:58Speaker 5: I'm just gonna try to sum up what you what
- 30:00Speaker 5: you're saying with your relationship with your dad in football
- 30:02Speaker 5: at a young age, that the long term athletic development
- 30:08Speaker 5: was what you were focused on, not on you know,
- 30:11Speaker 5: just you're going to be a quarterback, Carl, and so
- 30:14Speaker 5: we're going to work on quarterback skills and whether you
- 30:16Speaker 5: like it or not, our quarterback material.
- 30:19Speaker 2: You're right, my dad never had had an Do you
- 30:21Speaker 2: think that happens now and you I don't. I don't.
- 30:23Speaker 2: I think I think most people think that their kid
- 30:26Speaker 2: is something. Even if they're a good quarterback at the
- 30:30Speaker 2: youth level, that does not mean but do they get.
- 30:34Speaker 5: Do they get stuck on a position? Sometimes?
- 30:36Speaker 2: Yes? And that's and I think they get stuck And
- 30:39Speaker 2: I think the parent gets stuck on that position because
- 30:45Speaker 2: you got to leave that up to the coach. You gotta,
- 30:47Speaker 2: you know, because the question I would ask a parent
- 30:50Speaker 2: who thinks that their kid has is worthy of or
- 30:54Speaker 2: belongs in a certain position, what what get? What makes
- 30:59Speaker 2: you think that?
- 31:00Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 31:01Speaker 2: What is it about your son that you think he
- 31:04Speaker 2: should be a quarterback?
- 31:07Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 31:07Speaker 2: Well he can throw the ball, Yeah, he can throw
- 31:09Speaker 2: the ball, and he throws me passes thirty year old.
- 31:12Speaker 5: The better question is does the Sun want to be
- 31:14Speaker 5: a quarterback?
- 31:15Speaker 7: You know?
- 31:16Speaker 5: I mean when you stifle their creativity and and their
- 31:19Speaker 5: and their ownership, you know, they they may want to
- 31:22Speaker 5: be a safety like Carl.
- 31:24Speaker 2: Lee, and you can't and you can't you can you
- 31:28Speaker 2: can't box them in and you can't assume from season,
- 31:31Speaker 2: from from level to level that they're going to be
- 31:35Speaker 2: the same thing. Again, I played, I played at Marshall.
- 31:39Speaker 2: I was a safety. I played safety one year in
- 31:43Speaker 2: Minnesota in my second season, and I was so happy
- 31:47Speaker 2: to go back to corner because I knew that was
- 31:51Speaker 2: not my position, you know, And and I had only
- 31:55Speaker 2: played corner maybe two games in my entire life at Marshall, Right,
- 32:00Speaker 2: but I was drafted as a corner. Then, like again,
- 32:04Speaker 2: my second year in the league, I ended up going
- 32:06Speaker 2: back to safety, and like I said, I hated it.
- 32:08Speaker 2: My third year, I come back to corner, and I
- 32:11Speaker 2: get a guy named Pete Carroll. Yeah, and the rest
- 32:15Speaker 2: of my career is history, and and and and I
- 32:18Speaker 2: say that again because just the fortunate piece of somebody
- 32:24Speaker 2: recognizing a coach recognizing what is best for me, what
- 32:29Speaker 2: might be what what might.
- 32:31Speaker 5: Be something not telling me, encouraging you and showing me
- 32:37Speaker 5: what I can do and how I can do it,
- 32:39Speaker 5: not saying you have to do it, but here's something
- 32:41Speaker 5: you might you might want to try.
- 32:43Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, Well we were going to press, we were
- 32:46Speaker 2: gonna go to bump and run, man the man blitzing
- 32:49Speaker 2: and all that kind of stuff. We were gonna do that.
- 32:51Speaker 2: So you either had to fit that or you were
- 32:54Speaker 2: gonna be gone. But it was again, part of that
- 32:57Speaker 2: is being taught, and the other piece of it is
- 33:00Speaker 2: being willing to say, Okay, well I don't want to
- 33:03Speaker 2: be a safe anyway, so I can be a corner
- 33:06Speaker 2: and do what now, Okay, do it this way that
- 33:09Speaker 2: you know, I'm trying to get that information. And this
- 33:12Speaker 2: is before Pete Carroll is Pete Carroll, right, you know,
- 33:16Speaker 2: this is long before anybody knew who he was. And
- 33:19Speaker 2: all of that, all that teaching, all of that knowledge
- 33:25Speaker 2: that he sent to me gave to me. That's that's
- 33:29Speaker 2: why I'm sitting here.
- 33:30Speaker 4: Right you know. Oh, we know coaches are like that.
- 33:34Speaker 5: They're the main ingredients, the staple, they really are the
- 33:38Speaker 5: development of an athlete. And and there was something that
- 33:41Speaker 5: I also read in the study that you and Hollis
- 33:44Speaker 5: have said more than once on the podcast that that
- 33:46Speaker 5: I can recall, but you should have an emphasis on
- 33:49Speaker 5: multi sport participation. So if you're playing football, just like
- 33:54Speaker 5: you guys have talked about, we want to see you
- 33:56Speaker 5: play basketball, run track, do something in addition to that sport,
- 34:01Speaker 5: because you may find that that sport it more suits
- 34:04Speaker 5: you than the one that they're they're driving you to
- 34:07Speaker 5: participate in.
- 34:09Speaker 2: And I would I would say, I would say this
- 34:11Speaker 2: that if if as an adult, if you were learning
- 34:17Speaker 2: something and somebody was somebody was teaching you that craft
- 34:24Speaker 2: that you are looking to do, you would you would
- 34:27Speaker 2: invest yourself into that in that knowledge. So I say
- 34:32Speaker 2: that to say, in order in order to be to
- 34:40Speaker 2: allow a kid to be a a player in any sport,
- 34:50Speaker 2: don't don't lock them into one thing to one thing. Yeah,
- 34:55Speaker 2: because one thing helps the next thing, and the next
- 34:58Speaker 2: thing helps the next. If you want to do if
- 35:02Speaker 2: you're not going to do footwork with your with your child,
- 35:08Speaker 2: then you better put him in basketball. If you don't
- 35:11Speaker 2: have a training regiment that's gonna help him get faster,
- 35:15Speaker 2: put him in track.
- 35:16Speaker 4: There you go.
- 35:18Speaker 2: It's a great point I mean that you you're gonna
- 35:23Speaker 2: you're gonna be You're gonna understand when it's too late,
- 35:26Speaker 2: when all of a sudden they're saying that he's too slow.
- 35:29Speaker 5: Well, and that's gonna help with burnout, because if you're
- 35:32Speaker 5: just focused on one sport, one position all the time, you.
- 35:36Speaker 4: Know, it's easy.
- 35:37Speaker 5: It's just like anybody that that has a work position
- 35:40Speaker 5: or a job that you know, if you do too
- 35:42Speaker 5: much all the time, you're going to experience burnout.
- 35:46Speaker 4: And and and the kids are no different.
- 35:48Speaker 2: They're no different. And and and hear me out. I
- 35:52Speaker 2: started in basketball not because I could shoot, not because
- 35:55Speaker 2: I could dribble, not because I could do anything other
- 35:59Speaker 2: than play deepense, which was okay with me, because it
- 36:02Speaker 2: was footwork and I had to pass Coach Walden Woon.
- 36:06Speaker 2: If I took a shot, I'd be sitting on the bench.
- 36:09Speaker 2: I had to cover. I have to cover guard the
- 36:12Speaker 2: guy who was their best player. Basketball, football, baseball, like
- 36:22Speaker 2: any sport that I played. The only thing that I
- 36:26Speaker 2: was ever any good was football, and I used they
- 36:31Speaker 2: I enjoy I enjoyed the other sports because I was
- 36:34Speaker 2: getting something from it, right, you know, yes, yeah, I
- 36:40Speaker 2: don't think I could have just just dove into football
- 36:43Speaker 2: and been into it every single day for forever. I
- 36:47Speaker 2: needed a break. But in the yeah, and in the
- 36:51Speaker 2: break though, what they're getting is they're getting something special.
- 36:55Speaker 2: You know, they're getting another skill set that will help them. Yeah.
- 37:02Speaker 5: I mean to me, it's not rocket science. I mean,
- 37:05Speaker 5: I think all of this the study really made sense.
- 37:07Speaker 5: And especially when I started reading through and the things
- 37:10Speaker 5: that they recommended to remedy some of the things that
- 37:13Speaker 5: are causing you know this, this these kids to leave
- 37:18Speaker 5: youth sports. I was like, oh wow, Carl and Hollis
- 37:21Speaker 5: have said this over and over on the podcast, and
- 37:24Speaker 5: so it was kind of refreshing to know that, you know,
- 37:28Speaker 5: we make sense sometimes sometimes Yeah.
- 37:32Speaker 4: Yeah, it's got a nice to know.
- 37:35Speaker 5: So one more thing I wanted before we leave this issue, Carl.
- 37:39Speaker 5: The one thing that I read about was the inequity
- 37:43Speaker 5: and this statistic is disturbing as well, and maybe you
- 37:46Speaker 5: have some ideas I'm kind of at a loss about
- 37:48Speaker 5: when I'm, well, it makes sense. I don't like it,
- 37:51Speaker 5: but it makes sense. So they're saying that seventy percent
- 37:54Speaker 5: of the kids who play youth sports come from high
- 37:57Speaker 5: income families versus thirty percent scent coming from your low income.
- 38:02Speaker 5: So you know some of the things.
- 38:03Speaker 4: That those are barriers.
- 38:06Speaker 5: We know that that income, money, finances are barriers for
- 38:10Speaker 5: these kids to participate. So what do you think some
- 38:13Speaker 5: what are some things that we could do to help
- 38:15Speaker 5: remedy those barrier barriers?
- 38:17Speaker 2: Well, I think it's disturbing to me, is it you? Yes, Okay,
- 38:22Speaker 2: it's right. And I think that the most important piece
- 38:26Speaker 2: to that is we have to look at it. Yeah,
- 38:30Speaker 2: you know, we have to look at it. We have
- 38:31Speaker 2: to we have to first admit to it. Your your stats,
- 38:36Speaker 2: your status are great, and they are and they are.
- 38:40Speaker 2: If you get a stat then you have a stat
- 38:43Speaker 2: and then we have to assume that that status.
- 38:45Speaker 4: Need to highlight what you've just said, like, but.
- 38:47Speaker 2: But we, but we The problem is who's going to
- 38:51Speaker 2: call that out? Right? Who's going to call out So
- 38:57Speaker 2: we we know, we know the statistics of the number
- 39:04Speaker 2: of black white athletes that are in the NFL in
- 39:09Speaker 2: college Division one. We we know those kinds of numbers. Right,
- 39:14Speaker 2: If those numbers are drastically different than what youth sports is,
- 39:21Speaker 2: is there not a problem? Is there something going on?
- 39:24Speaker 2: Is there something wrong? And and and you can you can.
- 39:31Speaker 2: You can. There's a couple of different ways that you
- 39:34Speaker 2: can mask that. Some of that is money cost.
- 39:38Speaker 5: Right, you can cost But they were they were talking
- 39:41Speaker 5: about like these travel travel ball it costs a lot
- 39:44Speaker 5: of of you know, there's a lot of costs to
- 39:46Speaker 5: that with equipment and you know, covering the travel and
- 39:50Speaker 5: and and all the things that come with it.
- 39:52Speaker 2: And you know it's it's it's a lot well and
- 39:54Speaker 2: and to the parent who has a has a talented kid,
- 39:59Speaker 2: and and all people from travel sports are going to
- 40:01Speaker 2: be they'll hate me for this, But that's fine. This
- 40:04Speaker 2: is just what I believe. I'm not sending my kid.
- 40:08Speaker 2: I'm not I'm not paying for my kid to go
- 40:11Speaker 2: to play, to go play against somebody in Ohio, Chicago,
- 40:18Speaker 2: Virginia or whatever. I'm gonna put them in youth sports
- 40:21Speaker 2: here and let them play because at some point, because.
- 40:26Speaker 5: And do you think that's part of the problem too,
- 40:29Speaker 5: is travel ball. Because here's youth organized youth sports.
- 40:33Speaker 2: And for everybody who knows me, who knows who is
- 40:37Speaker 2: involved in travel ball knows this is my position, right,
- 40:42Speaker 2: I don't care at the end of the day. At
- 40:45Speaker 2: the end of the day, the kids who are playing
- 40:50Speaker 2: travel ball or whatever you want to call it. They're not.
- 40:56Speaker 2: They're not. You're saying that they're getting better because they're
- 40:59Speaker 2: playing against better competition. Who's measuring that competition?
- 41:06Speaker 5: I mean, I guess records, because that because that the records,
- 41:09Speaker 5: the kids are.
- 41:10Speaker 2: Okay. So let's say you go to Ohio. You go
- 41:12Speaker 2: to Ohio and you play a basketball team that's got
- 41:16Speaker 2: some really super talented kids, or based off of how
- 41:22Speaker 2: good your kids are, right, so maybe they're not that great.
- 41:26Speaker 2: You know, maybe they're just better than your kid, Right,
- 41:28Speaker 2: that's just losing.
- 41:29Speaker 5: I mean, I think I think travel ball has the
- 41:31Speaker 5: right intent. I think I think I think families want
- 41:35Speaker 5: what's best for their kids, and they think that. You know,
- 41:37Speaker 5: the trend is to you know, invest in your child
- 41:41Speaker 5: becoming a better athlete and whatever sport it is.
- 41:44Speaker 2: You know, to invest does not always mean money, true invest.
- 41:50Speaker 5: Is, but I think in our society today that that's
- 41:52Speaker 5: kind of what we equate invest with. Do you not agree?
- 41:56Speaker 2: I mean, I think you're saying it's just as valuable.
- 41:59Speaker 2: I do. I do. And there's a gentleman who who
- 42:05Speaker 2: trains kids almost every day. Sean lewis, great guy, great guy,
- 42:13Speaker 2: and he is helping kids be better and understand work
- 42:20Speaker 2: ethic today. Okay, right in this moment, I'm off I'm
- 42:26Speaker 2: fine with that, okay, because he's not he's not guaranteeing
- 42:31Speaker 2: them success. He's he's just trying to get them to
- 42:37Speaker 2: to learn how to work. His goal is to get
- 42:41Speaker 2: them to understand how to work and and and and
- 42:44Speaker 2: create the work ethic that you will need going forward
- 42:47Speaker 2: once you get past him. We just and to me,
- 42:55Speaker 2: I would not I would not really ever want to
- 43:00Speaker 2: go to a trainer per se myself, right if because
- 43:06Speaker 2: until I can do it on my own. Now, if
- 43:11Speaker 2: I can do it on my own, now, I can
- 43:13Speaker 2: go to somebody who has an expertise in it and
- 43:16Speaker 2: and be more than willing to listen to what he's
- 43:17Speaker 2: got to say. Sure, but if I'm not that kid, yeah,
- 43:24Speaker 2: I'm wasting I'm wasting my folks is money? Yeah, And
- 43:29Speaker 2: what's my goal? What's my goal? What is my ultimate goal?
- 43:33Speaker 2: As a kid. I'm sending a kid to a trainer
- 43:36Speaker 2: and who's a knowledgeable person who can help him, But
- 43:41Speaker 2: he doesn't have the goals. He doesn't have well.
- 43:45Speaker 5: And that just proves our stat Yeah, I mean It
- 43:48Speaker 5: just proves the stat we started this whole conversation with.
- 43:51Speaker 5: We've got seventy percent of these kids that are quitting
- 43:53Speaker 5: organized sports according to this study. And unless we can
- 43:58Speaker 5: get it turned around, it's want to carry over to
- 44:01Speaker 5: the college, collegiate level, the high school levels, NFL. I mean,
- 44:05Speaker 5: if we don't start young and give them some foundational
- 44:09Speaker 5: skills interested in the sport, what's going to happen to
- 44:12Speaker 5: the sport?
- 44:13Speaker 2: If my dad, If I if my dad was paying
- 44:15Speaker 2: for Shawn Lewis to train me, and and Sewn Lewis
- 44:23Speaker 2: would go to go to my dad and say, you
- 44:25Speaker 2: know what, he just ain't given me really all that
- 44:30Speaker 2: he's got. Not only would I be at at Sean
- 44:38Speaker 2: Lewis's beckon call because I know I don't want him
- 44:45Speaker 2: to make another call because another call is detriment to
- 44:48Speaker 2: my help. No, he wasn't going to play, and the
- 44:55Speaker 2: fact that he might have been paying him money to
- 44:57Speaker 2: do that. Yeah, if you're if if if you send
- 45:02Speaker 2: a kid to a trainer, you should be there to
- 45:05Speaker 2: watch it. And you should watch your kid's bodying language
- 45:11Speaker 2: and make sure that.
- 45:12Speaker 6: It speaks louder louder than anything else and then when
- 45:16Speaker 6: you do that, when when it's over and you feel
- 45:19Speaker 6: like he or she didn't do enough right, that's a.
- 45:24Speaker 2: Conversation like, look, we're gonna talk, we gotta talk. This
- 45:28Speaker 2: is this is you're you're costing me money that I'm
- 45:31Speaker 2: more than willing to use to get you better. But
- 45:35Speaker 2: if you're not willing to work.
- 45:36Speaker 5: But that's that comes under the umbrella of pressure again.
- 45:39Speaker 5: I mean, you know, maybe they have these visions for
- 45:42Speaker 5: their for their their baby that they're going to be,
- 45:46Speaker 5: you know, whatever it is the sport is, they're going
- 45:48Speaker 5: to be the best of the best.
- 45:49Speaker 4: And they're not ready for that yet.
- 45:51Speaker 5: So I mean, it's it's it's that's what it is.
- 45:53Speaker 2: Because and I and one hundred percent agree with you,
- 45:56Speaker 2: because I do feel like some people who who get
- 46:01Speaker 2: their kids a trainer, their kids not ready yet in
- 46:07Speaker 2: what it is that you want me to do, whether
- 46:10Speaker 2: it be football, basketball, or baseball, whatever.
- 46:12Speaker 4: They're just not in that space.
- 46:13Speaker 2: Just not in that space. Yeah, And I think, but
- 46:16Speaker 2: now I'm going to ask you a question and see
- 46:19Speaker 2: if I'm.
- 46:20Speaker 5: Crazy, Well, I could tell you the answer to that.
- 46:24Speaker 2: I get up for that. So do you think that
- 46:29Speaker 2: the parents can tell whether or not their kid is
- 46:33Speaker 2: really truly invested in it and worthy of going to
- 46:37Speaker 2: a trainer. Do you think that could you Do you
- 46:40Speaker 2: think you could actually tell that.
- 46:42Speaker 4: I would think a bystander could tell.
- 46:44Speaker 5: I mean, I mean, I just know, as a former teacher,
- 46:47Speaker 5: when when we're doing you know, when I was in
- 46:48Speaker 5: the classroom and we had some type of project, I
- 46:50Speaker 5: could point without a kid telling me anything.
- 46:54Speaker 4: I could sell from the like you said.
- 46:56Speaker 5: Body language that the odd you know, the eye roll
- 47:00Speaker 5: or the you know, excitement in their eyes. I mean,
- 47:02Speaker 5: I think kids can speak louder, yeah, without you know,
- 47:07Speaker 5: they can say one thing but show you something else.
- 47:10Speaker 5: You know, they're not they haven't mastered the art of,
- 47:12Speaker 5: like adults, of being able to keep your real feelings
- 47:14Speaker 5: inside and rest of the time.
- 47:17Speaker 2: Yeah, and I and I really think that at some point,
- 47:20Speaker 2: I think every parent and every child needs to have
- 47:26Speaker 2: a conversation, an open conversation about what it is that
- 47:32Speaker 2: you want to do or you that you don't want
- 47:35Speaker 2: to do.
- 47:35Speaker 5: And here's here's the part that's that may be hard.
- 47:37Speaker 5: You need to respect the conversation. Yes, you don't just
- 47:40Speaker 5: say we're going to have a conversation and then say Oh,
- 47:42Speaker 5: it doesn't matter.
- 47:42Speaker 4: We're still going to Johnny, you know.
- 47:44Speaker 5: I mean you have to respect what he what that
- 47:46Speaker 5: he or she has to say about it.
- 47:47Speaker 2: Because if litt Johnny's not interested then and you're you're
- 47:51Speaker 2: getting them a trainer and all that kind of stuff,
- 47:53Speaker 2: that's not going to get him more interested in it.
- 47:55Speaker 2: That's just not going to get a back off. Yeah. Yeah,
- 47:58Speaker 2: So well I think.
- 48:01Speaker 5: We covered that one pretty well. Carl Hollis would be proud,
- 48:05Speaker 5: Yes he would. Yes, he seats here empty. We miss Hollis.
- 48:08Speaker 5: Oh and by the way, when we had the conversation
- 48:10Speaker 5: about shador Keep kind of chimed in. He felt like
- 48:12Speaker 5: Joe Flacco probably would have been a good choice. Oh ye,
- 48:17Speaker 5: which I'm with Coop. We're team Coop on that one,
- 48:19Speaker 5: aren't we.
- 48:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that would have been easy.
- 48:22Speaker 8: My brief, my brief foray into the show here. I
- 48:25Speaker 8: just had to look at his stats. He had twenty
- 48:26Speaker 8: six hundred yards receiving, had more touchdowns and interceptions, and
- 48:29Speaker 8: a sixty percent completion percentage. Those are more NFL like
- 48:33Speaker 8: numbers than a fifty six percent completion percentage. In modern NFL,
- 48:37Speaker 8: nobody completes fifty six percent of their passes. That's ridiculous.
- 48:40Speaker 5: Yeah, well see, there you go, there.
- 48:42Speaker 2: You go, Thanks Coop, yeah, thanks Coot.
- 48:46Speaker 7: All right, well, ladies and gentlemen, me and Lisa we
- 48:49Speaker 7: held down the show today and we will be back
- 48:52Speaker 7: again next week.
- 49:08Speaker 2: It's the Chicken
