Latest / Foul Territory / Sizing up NL division leaders, Skubal trade back in play? State of Yanks & Rays, Trevor Story's surgery
Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Freaky Fraser Friday and Trevor may Day.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Let's go for the long weekends. What a combo. Let's
- 0:10Speaker 2: do this and people like us too. Somebody sent us
- 0:14Speaker 2: a little tweet. I think it was last night or
- 0:16Speaker 2: this morning. I'll let Todd Father read it. Go ahead,
- 0:18Speaker 2: Todd Father.
- 0:20Speaker 3: From The Wicked Better. If you still haven't joined Foul
- 0:22Speaker 3: Territory TV, do it today. The crew over there does
- 0:25Speaker 3: a fantastic job covering all thirty teams and always is
- 0:29Speaker 3: good content. Make sure to give them a like and
- 0:31Speaker 3: subscribe today. Appreciate that Wicked Better. Thank you so much.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Yeah, checks in the mail man really nice.
- 0:40Speaker 4: I can't help but notice that neither Todd or I
- 0:43Speaker 4: were tagged in that though.
- 0:44Speaker 1: So it's a usage thing, Trevor.
- 0:48Speaker 2: I think that's what it is, between the potential character limit.
- 0:51Speaker 2: I don't even know if that's a thing anymore on
- 0:54Speaker 2: Twitter point and the usage rates. I think he went
- 0:57Speaker 2: in order of attendance. But hey, we've got time, We've
- 1:01Speaker 2: got a lifetime of appearances that you can rack up
- 1:04Speaker 2: on the show. So we appreciate it. So thank you
- 1:07Speaker 2: to him. All right, I want to have some fun.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Let's dig in here. Yeah, we're charging the mound with
- 1:15Speaker 2: the Al East.
- 1:16Speaker 1: First.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Why because the top two teams in the American League
- 1:19Speaker 2: are matching up this weekend. But we want to do
- 1:21Speaker 2: a bigger picture conversation on where they're at, how different
- 1:23Speaker 2: they are, who you'd rather face, who you believe in, etc.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Todd Father watches a lot of Yanks, So let's start here.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Garrett Cole returns.
- 1:33Speaker 2: He's facing Nick Martinez, who I think might be the
- 1:35Speaker 2: most underrated pitcher this year. One and a half the
- 1:39Speaker 2: ra for the Rays, who have been one of the
- 1:41Speaker 2: best teams in baseball. What do you have for me
- 1:44Speaker 2: on collback for the Yanks? Rodan getting himself together a
- 1:47Speaker 2: little better a night ago. Of course, they lost Max Freed.
- 1:51Speaker 2: How do you match up these two teams?
- 1:54Speaker 3: I think it's going to be a great matchup. First
- 1:56Speaker 3: and foremost. I mean, you think about a Tampa Bay
- 1:58Speaker 3: Ray team who nobody saw this coming. If you want
- 2:01Speaker 3: the truth, I mean, nobody understood, but they always know
- 2:04Speaker 3: and they can always relate to pitching, and they've been fantastic.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Let's start with Nick Martinez. I mean, and nine starts
- 2:11Speaker 3: two or less runs. I mean, you were winning games
- 2:14Speaker 3: no matter what. If that happens, and for you know,
- 2:17Speaker 3: for the race, they're finding ways to win games, and
- 2:19Speaker 3: they're finding ways to put the ball in play. I
- 2:21Speaker 3: mean they just took out the Orioles, made that look
- 2:23Speaker 3: really easy. You know, the ebbs and flows of the
- 2:27Speaker 3: Yankees have been transparent as we've seen. Yeah, Garrett Cole,
- 2:32Speaker 3: the cold Traine is coming back tonight, fantastic. You saw
- 2:36Speaker 3: the the other day he got interviewed.
- 2:38Speaker 5: The excitement.
- 2:39Speaker 3: It feels like Christmas Day for him. Almost topped out
- 2:43Speaker 3: at one hundred miles an hour the other day. So
- 2:45Speaker 3: he's back where he needs to be. I'm very curious
- 2:48Speaker 3: to see how many pitches they let him get to.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Ky Bairo's coming back. We saw Spencer Jones hit the
- 2:54Speaker 3: road go back.
- 2:56Speaker 5: To Triple A. I didn't.
- 2:59Speaker 3: I wasn't expecting that one. If you want the truth,
- 3:01Speaker 3: especially you know, with Grisham a little bit hurt, I
- 3:04Speaker 3: think he'll be fine.
- 3:05Speaker 5: Though.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Volpi's doing a lot better, getting on base a little
- 3:08Speaker 3: bit more.
- 3:10Speaker 5: It seems like, you know, I don't want to say.
- 3:13Speaker 3: This out loud, but I'm gonna like the Dodgers of
- 3:15Speaker 3: the East without that many bullets. Like somebody got hurt
- 3:18Speaker 3: and guess what, Garrett calls back. Somebody else got Max
- 3:21Speaker 3: Friedz gone, Carlos Rodonna's back. So, for lack of better words,
- 3:25Speaker 3: they got the pieces that could come back and help
- 3:27Speaker 3: this team. Aaron Judges struggling a little bit, Austin Wells'
- 3:30Speaker 3: needs to get off the snide Ryan McMahon's hit or miss.
- 3:33Speaker 3: So that right there tells me that the Rays do
- 3:36Speaker 3: have the upper hand right now. But you know, you
- 3:39Speaker 3: never know what can happen with this matchup.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Yeah, and in a moment, I want to get your
- 3:44Speaker 2: take on them keeping Goulpi up there and sending down
- 3:46Speaker 2: Spencer Jones and all of that.
- 3:48Speaker 1: But quick to bring in Trevor here, what do you
- 3:51Speaker 1: have for us? Two very different looking teams.
- 3:54Speaker 2: One likes power, one has some power, but likes to
- 3:57Speaker 2: do a little bit of small ball. It's hey, it's genius, Trevor.
- 4:01Speaker 2: The Rays, who are always copied by other teams, have
- 4:04Speaker 2: decided to do things that teams in the eighties and
- 4:07Speaker 2: nineties do.
- 4:08Speaker 4: Yeah, you gotta well, first of all, you gotta like
- 4:12Speaker 4: win with what you got and not everyone could build
- 4:15Speaker 4: the big bopper team that that happens to be The
- 4:18Speaker 4: Bombers and it always has been their mo and their
- 4:22Speaker 4: you know, template for how they put together their teams,
- 4:24Speaker 4: and that leads to it's just a different style of play.
- 4:27Speaker 4: But for the Rays to be good again it is surprising,
- 4:31Speaker 4: and it also isn't At the same time, it seems
- 4:33Speaker 4: like it doesn't matter who's on this team. They can
- 4:36Speaker 4: trade Brandon Lau and someone else is gonna then hit
- 4:38Speaker 4: thirty homers the next year to fill in that gap.
- 4:41Speaker 4: I think the biggest thing, the weirdest thing, is how
- 4:44Speaker 4: I think last year was actually an outlier in a way,
- 4:46Speaker 4: like they had one of the hardest.
- 4:48Speaker 6: Schedules to play because they were on the road like.
- 4:51Speaker 4: One hundred games, and when they were at home, they
- 4:53Speaker 4: were outside in Florida, Like it was not a good
- 4:57Speaker 4: conducive situation to be win a lot. And then suddenly
- 5:01Speaker 4: they're back in the TP the trop of all places.
- 5:05Speaker 4: And I know we're going to talk a little bit
- 5:06Speaker 4: about ranking the stadiums later and we'll see where that lands.
- 5:10Speaker 4: But they're nineteen and five at home since they've been back,
- 5:13Speaker 4: So that just goes to show you, like how much
- 5:16Speaker 4: more comfortable they are now with their park. And it's
- 5:19Speaker 4: a lot of the same, you know, level of talent.
- 5:21Speaker 4: It doesn't surprise me one bit. Go two years ago
- 5:25Speaker 4: they were doing this type of stuff just like.
- 5:27Speaker 6: They had been.
- 5:30Speaker 4: It's just more of the same. And I just feel
- 5:31Speaker 4: like they had this little gap year because they had
- 5:33Speaker 4: to deal with some adversity. So yeah, Nick Martinez has
- 5:36Speaker 4: been incredible. He signs there to be you know, I'm
- 5:39Speaker 4: sure it was put in there like hey, you know,
- 5:41Speaker 4: hybrid guy or starter, but whatever we need you to do,
- 5:44Speaker 4: and he's like, yes, absolutely, And he's had immense success
- 5:47Speaker 4: so far and really taken advantage of the pitching development
- 5:50Speaker 4: they have over there, and then they got the guys
- 5:53Speaker 4: in the middle of the lineup. Like I don't think
- 5:54Speaker 4: we can say enough about how much better Junior Kaminaro
- 5:57Speaker 4: is getting every single year For a guy with the
- 5:59Speaker 4: pop power he has, striking out less and last he's
- 6:01Speaker 4: hitting the ball harder more and more often.
- 6:03Speaker 6: He's scary and scary to face.
- 6:04Speaker 4: Dandy Diaz has been like a top eight hitter for
- 6:07Speaker 4: the last five years and no one really.
- 6:09Speaker 6: Talks about it.
- 6:10Speaker 4: So like they have pieces, pieces that have been there
- 6:13Speaker 4: for a while, and then they fill in really well
- 6:15Speaker 4: and they platoon really well and they put people in
- 6:18Speaker 4: the position to be successful, so it doesn't surprise me
- 6:20Speaker 4: that they've been able to rattle off the type of
- 6:22Speaker 4: beginning of the season they've had this year. And the
- 6:25Speaker 4: Aankies are going to be around, be there, and they're
- 6:27Speaker 4: going to be ten twenty thirty games over five hundred
- 6:30Speaker 4: this year, and we'll see where the Rays end up.
- 6:33Speaker 4: But you know, as we've seen in the past, and
- 6:36Speaker 4: about a couple of other teams were about to talk
- 6:37Speaker 4: about a bit small market versus big market, like, it
- 6:40Speaker 4: comes down to what happens in October two so like.
- 6:43Speaker 4: But it's always fun and the Rays have had their
- 6:45Speaker 4: number a little bit in the last five years, so
- 6:46Speaker 4: it wouldn't surprise me if they were able to keep
- 6:49Speaker 4: this pace up.
- 6:50Speaker 6: We love our dog.
- 6:51Speaker 7: Fella, who splays out in the open sun on our
- 6:53Speaker 7: floor like she's an underwear model, and that's why we
- 6:56Speaker 7: love her so much.
- 6:57Speaker 1: To scratch her belly. She's a cutie.
- 7:01Speaker 2: That BELLA and a quick message from today's sponsor, the

- 7:45Speaker 2: Agency Limited. The ASPCA is not an insurance and is
- 7:48Speaker 2: not engaged in the business of insurance. Yeah, and Kevin Arra,
- 7:52Speaker 2: by the way, is twenty two years old. Twenty two
- 7:56Speaker 2: You forget home it. It'd be good for a while.
- 8:00Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Hey, Todd, I want to swing back to you on
- 8:03Speaker 2: the rosters. So what did you think when they sent
- 8:06Speaker 2: down Spencer Jones after I mean, when four for twenty
- 8:09Speaker 2: four He hasn't locked a ton of AB's yet, and
- 8:12Speaker 2: he certainly looks like he can belong. I know, we
- 8:14Speaker 2: got to see on a larger sample size how much
- 8:17Speaker 2: the strikeout rate balances against getting knocks and getting the
- 8:20Speaker 2: ball over the fence. But were you surprised that Caberra
- 8:24Speaker 2: is coming back and they're keeping Volpi on the big
- 8:27Speaker 2: league roster. Cabiro was their starting shortstop playing every day
- 8:31Speaker 2: he goes on the IL and he's telling the media like,
- 8:34Speaker 2: I'm counting down the days I'm back as soon as
- 8:37Speaker 2: the minimum hits or what.
- 8:39Speaker 1: You know that I have to be on the IL.
- 8:41Speaker 2: When you see Volpi there, I mean, it's fine to
- 8:43Speaker 2: have a backup, But is he just going to be
- 8:44Speaker 2: sitting there riding the bench? Are they going to try
- 8:46Speaker 2: him out at other positions? He hasn't done that before.
- 8:49Speaker 2: I wonder what the plan is there.
- 8:51Speaker 3: Yeah, and you think about Schuman. I think it's Daniel Schuman.
- 8:57Speaker 3: If I'm not mistaken, he's the utility guy. He was
- 9:00Speaker 3: a guy that I was like, man, maybe it's in
- 9:02Speaker 3: between there. They might keep him up and send somebody,
- 9:06Speaker 3: send Vopi back down, But they kept Schuman.
- 9:08Speaker 5: There because it's versatility.
- 9:11Speaker 3: I just never I didn't think Jones was the guy
- 9:14Speaker 3: just because you know he can play the alpha. He
- 9:17Speaker 3: can give guys days off and he was just getting
- 9:19Speaker 3: started too. But you do understand with Volpi and how
- 9:23Speaker 3: good he's been playing, there's an opportunity there. But I
- 9:27Speaker 3: think it is ky Biro's spot. I think it's gonna
- 9:30Speaker 3: be his spot until it's not. I thought they were
- 9:33Speaker 3: gonna bring vote down so he can get more reps
- 9:37Speaker 3: and consistent reps too. So we're gonna see how this
- 9:40Speaker 3: plays off. I don't have an inkling of what they're
- 9:43Speaker 3: gonna do. I can only tell you what I think
- 9:45Speaker 3: they're gonna do. But I think ky Baliro is their guy.
- 9:48Speaker 3: They've talked about it numerous times, and it's it's gonna
- 9:53Speaker 3: be You're gonna be hard pressed if you think Vopi's
- 9:56Speaker 3: gonna be the guy that's gonna play shortstop.
- 9:58Speaker 5: I don't know if they're gonna move him around. I mean, listen,
- 10:01Speaker 5: they do.
- 10:01Speaker 3: They put him met Rosari at third base when Ry
- 10:04Speaker 3: McMahon is facing a lefty, so they have everything put
- 10:07Speaker 3: in place where Vopie stands. Well know in the next
- 10:12Speaker 3: couple of games, because listen, a guy like that, I
- 10:15Speaker 3: think he needs more reps and you know the Yankees
- 10:18Speaker 3: are keeping him up there.
- 10:19Speaker 5: I don't, I don't know.
- 10:21Speaker 3: I don't I don't have this foreseeable future right now
- 10:23Speaker 3: to see what they're gonna do with him.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Right Cambierra is gonna be pissed if he sits for
- 10:27Speaker 1: a game.
- 10:28Speaker 2: He is a spunky dude. He's a little spit buyer
- 10:31Speaker 2: on the team, and Yankee fans love him. I think
- 10:34Speaker 2: the team has loved him more than they even expected.
- 10:37Speaker 2: Trevor he's just, you know, a guy that you know
- 10:40Speaker 2: is out there right like, he's loud with his game.
- 10:43Speaker 2: He also runs as much as anyone in baseball, and
- 10:46Speaker 2: his defense has been incredible. He's one of the top
- 10:48Speaker 2: shortstop defenders in baseball this year. So I don't want
- 10:51Speaker 2: to they didn't fall into it, like they clearly did
- 10:53Speaker 2: a nice job there and plucked him from the Rays.
- 10:56Speaker 2: But he's been much better, I think than they even
- 10:58Speaker 2: thought he would be, so much so that he's run
- 11:01Speaker 2: away with a starting shortstop job. You just don't want
- 11:03Speaker 2: to be like, hey, you know, you missed a week
- 11:05Speaker 2: and a half and now we've got this guy breathing
- 11:08Speaker 2: down your neck who we've been sticking with for a
- 11:10Speaker 2: long period of time. You know, I wonder what that
- 11:12Speaker 2: dynamic looks like. You know, like you've talked to me
- 11:15Speaker 2: about this before. Yeah, it's a team Yankees want to
- 11:18Speaker 2: go out there and win games. But it's the regular
- 11:20Speaker 2: season and guys are fighting for their starting spots and
- 11:22Speaker 2: for you know, their value and free agency and for
- 11:25Speaker 2: Volpi even just being in the big leagues because I
- 11:28Speaker 2: think if he logs another week and change, he loses
- 11:30Speaker 2: another year of service time.
- 11:31Speaker 1: So there's a lot going on there behind the scenes.
- 11:35Speaker 4: Yeah, there's there's a ton going on it. And just
- 11:38Speaker 4: to kind of touch on the Cavier thing at the beginning,
- 11:40Speaker 4: there spunky great words.
- 11:42Speaker 6: I like that. I'm gonna use that more often. I
- 11:44Speaker 6: think that that's not used enough.
- 11:47Speaker 4: Yeah, he's he's definitely uh got the got the energy.
- 11:50Speaker 4: We we saw it when he came up with the Mariners.
- 11:52Speaker 4: You know, he'd gotten some uh some some back and
- 11:55Speaker 4: forth with some pitchers as a rookie and then raise
- 11:58Speaker 4: yet a couple of things, and you know, there's those
- 12:00Speaker 4: guys are really important to have on your team, and
- 12:03Speaker 4: he's an He's a guy you can find a spot
- 12:06Speaker 4: for on the field at any given time. As well,
- 12:08Speaker 4: the fact that he is kind of slotted right into
- 12:10Speaker 4: the shortstop spot and then played a really good defense.
- 12:13Speaker 4: Uh is I think just kind of a bonus, Like
- 12:15Speaker 4: that's not what they expected from He's also really good
- 12:18Speaker 4: at a challenging I don't know if you guys noticed,
- 12:21Speaker 4: but he does not hesitate there either, so a lot
- 12:23Speaker 4: of confidence.
- 12:24Speaker 6: And yet you need a lot.
- 12:25Speaker 4: Of confidence to play this game at a high level.
- 12:27Speaker 4: So uh, but yeah, he's been unexpected. I think treat
- 12:30Speaker 4: Uh he was a guy that thought that we're going
- 12:32Speaker 4: to be, you know, have flexibility with and be kind
- 12:35Speaker 4: of additive to what they already had. Now he's become
- 12:37Speaker 4: a major role role player on the team and you
- 12:41Speaker 4: love to see it. But but then again, you still
- 12:44Speaker 4: have the the young guys that need spots that you know,
- 12:49Speaker 4: presumably are still the future of your organization or at
- 12:52Speaker 4: least your core, and you always have to have a
- 12:54Speaker 4: young core coming. So like it gets to the point
- 12:57Speaker 4: where where you have to balance those things.
- 12:58Speaker 6: And this is gonna be weird to say.
- 13:00Speaker 4: The Yankees have a weirder like almost like that's an
- 13:04Speaker 4: issue or a problem a little bit something they have
- 13:06Speaker 4: to think about more often. Because they they are able
- 13:09Speaker 4: to spend money, they're able to bring in free agents,
- 13:10Speaker 4: and they're always going to and so like making space
- 13:15Speaker 4: for a core, they can't just be like we're tearing
- 13:16Speaker 4: it down. The whole core gets a play, go out
- 13:18Speaker 4: there and play kids and figure it out. Like that's
- 13:19Speaker 4: never something they're gonna be able to do. So this
- 13:21Speaker 4: kind of situation where a young guy maybe who struggled
- 13:25Speaker 4: or you know, talk about Volpie here, where he gets
- 13:28Speaker 4: his shoulder cleaned up and things kind of start to
- 13:30Speaker 4: even out again. It becomes that that player that they
- 13:33Speaker 4: expect them to be. Then what do you what do
- 13:35Speaker 4: you do? It's a nice problem to have, but it's
- 13:39Speaker 4: still it's still an interesting one.
- 13:40Speaker 6: Then I'll be watching pretty closely.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Yeah, And I know Brian Cashman was in a story
- 13:44Speaker 2: recently denying that they have more urgency this year with
- 13:47Speaker 2: roster moves and that it's just more depth and the ability.
- 13:52Speaker 1: To make decisions versus being stuck with someone.
- 13:54Speaker 2: But I do feel like they're still a little bit
- 13:56Speaker 2: more aggressive this year, guys competing, sending guys, not worrying
- 14:01Speaker 2: about feelings. And I'm not just talking about players feelings.
- 14:04Speaker 2: I'm talking about front office feelings. You know, some front
- 14:06Speaker 2: offices really stick with a guy and then they throw
- 14:08Speaker 2: them out there over and over again, you know, and
- 14:12Speaker 2: don't sit to them, or you know, maybe it's a
- 14:14Speaker 2: pitcher that they feel like they're going to fix. So
- 14:16Speaker 2: I think we've seen some of that in the past
- 14:18Speaker 2: with the Yanks on their decision making process, and they
- 14:21Speaker 2: seem to be a little bit more aggressive this year.
- 14:29Speaker 2: A corner time with the Dodgers and Brewers matching up
- 14:32Speaker 2: this week in the rematch of the NLCS, let's just
- 14:34Speaker 2: do a deeper dive into the division leaders in the
- 14:38Speaker 2: National League. So, Trevor, can you compare and contrast a
- 14:40Speaker 2: little bit the Dodgers, the Brewers and the Braves. What
- 14:44Speaker 2: you think about the way that they're riding through the
- 14:47Speaker 2: regular season and how that might convert into the postseason.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Where are we at?
- 14:52Speaker 2: Like to use an example, the Dodgers two years ago
- 14:56Speaker 2: were able to utilize an exceptional bullpen to help them
- 14:59Speaker 2: get through and they didn't have a ton.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Of starter meet.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Last year, they had so much starter meet in October
- 15:05Speaker 2: and the bullpen was a problem. Roki Sazaki saves the
- 15:08Speaker 2: day after being kind of in wasteland during the regular season.
- 15:11Speaker 2: So where we at this year with that team versus
- 15:14Speaker 2: you know, Milwaukee, We're about to see them matchup and
- 15:16Speaker 2: the Braves, who have been off to a sizzling start.
- 15:20Speaker 4: Well, I think the Dodgers, first of all, they put
- 15:23Speaker 4: their teams together with the postseason in mind. When you
- 15:27Speaker 4: win the division every single year, to the point where
- 15:30Speaker 4: like nobody even in the front office was there last
- 15:32Speaker 4: time they didn't win the division, you kind of start
- 15:35Speaker 4: to it becomes a foregone conclusion. And they're so good
- 15:38Speaker 4: at finding especially like bullpen help through the season because
- 15:42Speaker 4: that's usually one of the biggest turnover areas and could
- 15:44Speaker 4: really hurt you. They're so good at finding value from
- 15:48Speaker 4: guys on the waiver wire that other teams don't want
- 15:50Speaker 4: to fill in those gaps, and they have some strategies
- 15:53Speaker 4: for how to and then they have incredible depth with
- 15:55Speaker 4: the amount of the amount they spent, right, So, you know,
- 15:58Speaker 4: and even Joe Kelly's talking to this too. He's talked
- 16:00Speaker 4: about how like they'll they'll like slowly go through I
- 16:04Speaker 4: Elston's to where guys probably are ready for a couple
- 16:06Speaker 4: of weeks and they're they're kind of just like slow
- 16:08Speaker 4: playing and as soon as they need to spot all right,
- 16:10Speaker 4: you're back, and and there's they have so much uh
- 16:14Speaker 4: personnel they could put anywhere that they're able to fill
- 16:17Speaker 4: in those gaps, and they build it.
- 16:18Speaker 6: That way on purpose.
- 16:19Speaker 4: So I always, I always am going to have them
- 16:22Speaker 4: a penciled in to be a strong contender in the
- 16:24Speaker 4: playoffs just because they're built for that way. But that
- 16:27Speaker 4: is a luxury that they have. I would put say
- 16:29Speaker 4: number two behind them would probably be the Braves. I
- 16:31Speaker 4: think last year was an aberration. They still have this
- 16:34Speaker 4: young core, a bunch of guys that wildly underperformed last year,
- 16:38Speaker 4: uh combined with some injuries, you know, Chrysale and and
- 16:42Speaker 4: and Spencer Stryder was struggling to come back. Strider looks
- 16:45Speaker 4: much much closer to the old Spencer Strider. Chrisale is
- 16:49Speaker 4: on one once again, and lo and behold, that young
- 16:53Speaker 4: core is all coalesced, it coming together, and they tend
- 16:56Speaker 4: to like do well together and then struggle together as well.
- 17:00Speaker 4: So as soon as a couple of them get going,
- 17:01Speaker 4: they all tend to get going, and they go on
- 17:03Speaker 4: these runs where they're really really good. And it's not
- 17:06Speaker 4: surprising one bit with the how the other two you
- 17:09Speaker 4: know contenders, we thought they would have with the Mets
- 17:11Speaker 4: and Phillies scuffled really hard out of the gate, with
- 17:13Speaker 4: the Phillies making them more of a run.
- 17:15Speaker 6: I think they're going to make it a little bit closer.
- 17:17Speaker 4: I just don't see them being overtaken because they have
- 17:20Speaker 4: the ability to hit the home run, they have the
- 17:24Speaker 4: ability to run, They got good play, good defense, and
- 17:26Speaker 4: their bullpen's been really good, and the starting pitchings basalt like.
- 17:29Speaker 4: They just don't really have many weaknesses, and I don't
- 17:31Speaker 4: see them that sets them up for a playoff. They
- 17:33Speaker 4: they can go ahead ahead with a team like the Dodgers,
- 17:36Speaker 4: who can win with the three run home run, because
- 17:37Speaker 4: we know that the three run home run might be
- 17:39Speaker 4: the most valuable thing in a playoff series, which then
- 17:42Speaker 4: brings us to the Brewers. Brewers don't do that. They
- 17:45Speaker 4: don't hit them. I think we saw their earlier in
- 17:49Speaker 4: the show. We saw their their home run leaders on
- 17:52Speaker 4: their team, and I think second most is the backup catcher.
- 17:57Speaker 4: That's probably yeah, Gary's age, Like that's not great. Uh,
- 18:02Speaker 4: If Jake Bowers is tied leading your team in homers,
- 18:05Speaker 4: you've got to be able to put up a crooked
- 18:07Speaker 4: number in one swing that's just the name of the game.
- 18:10Speaker 4: The game's always actually that's been the name of the
- 18:12Speaker 4: game since the game existed. If you were able to
- 18:14Speaker 4: hit three on home run, no matter what era you
- 18:16Speaker 4: were in, the chances you won the game went way, way,
- 18:18Speaker 4: way up. And it's just times ten in the playoffs.
- 18:22Speaker 4: So the ability to do that, it's just going to
- 18:24Speaker 4: be there. But I do I think that the most
- 18:26Speaker 4: consistent team had all of those three. The team that
- 18:28Speaker 4: like you can count on to be in every single game,
- 18:30Speaker 4: every single day, I'd say that would be the Brewers.
- 18:33Speaker 4: So it's it's it's getting there's one thing, and then
- 18:36Speaker 4: winning when you're there is another thing, and and different
- 18:39Speaker 4: strengths come into play.
- 18:40Speaker 6: I would say in.
- 18:41Speaker 4: Order of making a run in the playoffs, probably that
- 18:45Speaker 4: is one. It's probably one A, one B with the
- 18:47Speaker 4: with the Dodgers and the Braves, and then I'd say
- 18:50Speaker 4: two would be the Brewers.
- 18:51Speaker 6: In terms of position.
- 18:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I think you hit a spot on too. I mean,
- 18:55Speaker 3: if you're talking about the Brewers, not the sexiest the names,
- 18:59Speaker 3: but guy that are building a culture together, and you
- 19:03Speaker 3: think of mister Murphy over there, the head, the head coach,
- 19:06Speaker 3: the manager. He does a really good job of molding
- 19:10Speaker 3: these young guys and some old too as well older
- 19:14Speaker 3: and that's why they're playing well. And and don't get me wrong,
- 19:17Speaker 3: and pitching has been fantastic too, the Braves. If we're
- 19:21Speaker 3: talking about the Braves, here's another reason that nobody's really
- 19:25Speaker 3: talking about. Yeah, they're doing great, don't get me wrong.
- 19:28Speaker 3: But everybody else in that division has been terrible. So
- 19:31Speaker 3: that helps a lot. As they're moving forward. They're playing
- 19:35Speaker 3: unbelievab baseball. Chris Sale is great. They're nine and a
- 19:38Speaker 3: half games up, man, and they have been doing absolutely fantastic.
- 19:41Speaker 3: And everybody else in that division. When they win, the
- 19:44Speaker 3: other teams lose. So that is a big helper. And
- 19:47Speaker 3: the Dodgers is going to be the Dodgers, man.
- 19:49Speaker 5: I had them win in the last two years. They've
- 19:51Speaker 5: done it.
- 19:53Speaker 3: They always set themselves up for the long haul, for
- 19:56Speaker 3: the finals, for the World Series. You can count them
- 20:00Speaker 3: out for as long as we're living, because if they
- 20:03Speaker 3: keep on supplying more players, they're going to be in
- 20:06Speaker 3: it all the time. But again, you're right, they match
- 20:09Speaker 3: up well. But seems like the Dodgers always find a
- 20:11Speaker 3: way to get over the hump.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Trevor, do you think that these three teams are the
- 20:17Speaker 2: powerhouses in the National League or do you? And I
- 20:20Speaker 2: want you to definitely factor in what you're talking about
- 20:22Speaker 2: when you mentioned the Dodgers, are they built to be
- 20:25Speaker 2: a force in the postseason? I mean, last year we
- 20:28Speaker 2: saw the Brewers take down the Cubs in a well
- 20:30Speaker 2: fought out series. The Cubs certainly have a good offense
- 20:33Speaker 2: and their defense is exceptional. Do they have enough starting
- 20:37Speaker 2: pitching we're comfortable with in October?
- 20:39Speaker 1: Again?
- 20:39Speaker 2: We know that teams are going to add at the
- 20:41Speaker 2: trade deadline, but we're not quite sure who's going to
- 20:43Speaker 2: actually be available yet. You know other teams you can
- 20:46Speaker 2: think about for sure? Are the Phillies. Like Todd mentioned,
- 20:49Speaker 2: the rest of the NL East has mostly been poo
- 20:51Speaker 2: this year, but the Phillies went on a really good
- 20:53Speaker 2: run the last couple of weeks.
- 20:55Speaker 1: They're good. I don't think you want to face them
- 20:57Speaker 1: in the playoffs.
- 20:57Speaker 2: I know they haven't been able to go the distance
- 20:59Speaker 2: and run this team back and make it as far
- 21:02Speaker 2: as they did a few years ago, But do you
- 21:04Speaker 2: want to match up against Christopher Sanchez and Zach Wheeler
- 21:07Speaker 2: to start off a series yet?
- 21:09Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 21:09Speaker 6: I'm good.
- 21:11Speaker 4: I mean that that is one of the big things.
- 21:13Speaker 4: Like I kind of whenever I am looking at especially
- 21:17Speaker 4: from the pitching standpoint, I just.
- 21:18Speaker 6: Call him the playoff three.
- 21:19Speaker 4: Usually it's the top three guys that are going to
- 21:22Speaker 4: carry you most of the time, and your fourth guy
- 21:24Speaker 4: is like a bullpen day. No matter what, he's gonna
- 21:25Speaker 4: have the shortest leash he's out of the year. So
- 21:27Speaker 4: like when it comes to that, the Phillies are well
- 21:29Speaker 4: positioned in that way, especially and with hazus Lozardo two
- 21:32Speaker 4: and his ability to take over a game just dominate,
- 21:34Speaker 4: Like if he has dialed in going in, they have.
- 21:37Speaker 4: Those are three guys I don't want to I don't
- 21:39Speaker 4: want to go head ahead. And I think that we
- 21:41Speaker 4: don't really talk about it because of how the series
- 21:43Speaker 4: ended last year. But the Phillies got great starting pitching
- 21:45Speaker 4: last year. They just didn't really get the job done
- 21:48Speaker 4: at the plate at all against the Dodgers, Like they
- 21:51Speaker 4: were outscored by three runs and that's they got beat
- 21:54Speaker 4: or four run I think it was four runs four
- 21:55Speaker 4: runs in the series, and they're just a couple of
- 21:57Speaker 4: moments away.
- 21:58Speaker 6: So they're scary.
- 22:00Speaker 4: I think they're scary especially if they're dialed in, especially
- 22:02Speaker 4: with the experience in the Bryce Harper and they got
- 22:04Speaker 4: they have the names, they got the Schwarbers, they got
- 22:06Speaker 4: a guy who can go deep at any point. The
- 22:08Speaker 4: three on homer is always in play.
- 22:10Speaker 6: They have one of the best closers in the league
- 22:14Speaker 6: that throws one hundred and two.
- 22:16Speaker 4: In terms of firepower, there's not really a place where
- 22:19Speaker 4: the ceiling in any area is low. So I would
- 22:23Speaker 4: say I put them in there now. It hasn't happened yet.
- 22:26Speaker 4: And honestly, if the Mets are dialed into, they're terrifying.
- 22:29Speaker 4: But they just haven't been dialed in at all, like
- 22:31Speaker 4: like at all, if all but on paper, if everyone
- 22:34Speaker 4: on that team were like playing well at the same time,
- 22:36Speaker 4: they would be winning every game by nine runs.
- 22:38Speaker 6: But it just hasn't happened.
- 22:40Speaker 4: So I would say the Phillies are definitely one of
- 22:43Speaker 4: those one of those teams that conversation. San Diego is
- 22:45Speaker 4: another team that you know, if the lineup's just feeling
- 22:49Speaker 4: good altogether, they're terrifying. It's just not a not gonna
- 22:52Speaker 4: be a fun one. There's no letdown anywhere or let
- 22:54Speaker 4: up anywhere. They have the potential to be at that
- 22:57Speaker 4: type of team as well. The Cubs are close, but
- 23:01Speaker 4: I think the starting pitching is the big question mark.
- 23:03Speaker 4: There's just no real true like you know, I'm when
- 23:07Speaker 4: I start, you got no chance. They don't have that
- 23:09Speaker 4: guy though, if they had Justin Steele, I think he's
- 23:12Speaker 4: got the he's got the demeanor of that guy.
- 23:14Speaker 6: Uh and and you'll.
- 23:16Speaker 4: See how sharp he is coming back, and he will
- 23:17Speaker 4: help a lot. But yeah, starting pitcher was always question mark.
- 23:20Speaker 4: They're like they're an inning it's eating type of starting rotation,
- 23:23Speaker 4: and that's not great in the playoffs. So yeah, I
- 23:26Speaker 4: would say Phillies, maybe Philly is in San Diego, and
- 23:28Speaker 4: I'm probably forgetting about somebody else, But I think those
- 23:31Speaker 4: are two good guys, good teams to point out that
- 23:35Speaker 4: that are able to if they are dialed in, and
- 23:38Speaker 4: if both the Dodgers or the you know, the Braves
- 23:41Speaker 4: are also playing well and they head ahead, it's it's
- 23:43Speaker 4: going to be a slug fest. It's not just going
- 23:46Speaker 4: to be one team is just better talent wise than
- 23:50Speaker 4: the other.
- 23:51Speaker 6: I think they can make a run.
- 23:52Speaker 4: They just have to kind of well, I mean San
- 23:54Speaker 4: Diego is playing that way. But if the Phillies get
- 23:57Speaker 4: going a little bit and they're hot at the right time,
- 23:58Speaker 4: they sneak in. I wouldn't be I wouldn't be excited
- 24:02Speaker 4: to have to go ahead to.
- 24:03Speaker 6: End with them.
- 24:04Speaker 2: No, and the Padres know how to build a bullpen
- 24:07Speaker 2: too clearly, and now they've got Mason Miller on the
- 24:09Speaker 2: back end. Dennis Lynn from The Athletic has already been
- 24:11Speaker 2: writing about how they're going to be seeking more bullpen help.
- 24:14Speaker 2: They've been that one team that says, cool, we have
- 24:17Speaker 2: two high leverage guys that we love and can close games.
- 24:20Speaker 1: Let's get two more.
- 24:21Speaker 5: Right.
- 24:21Speaker 2: That's the way that they operate in terms of how
- 24:24Speaker 2: to get through a season and win tight games, but
- 24:26Speaker 2: then also how to get by in the postseason. They
- 24:29Speaker 2: haven't hit enough like last year in the playoff series
- 24:31Speaker 2: of course against Chicago.
- 24:33Speaker 1: So let's finish with this. Todd father, what have you did?
- 24:35Speaker 5: You?
- 24:35Speaker 2: Did you do a game? Did you do a Padres
- 24:38Speaker 2: game so far this year? Or was that Lewis or
- 24:40Speaker 2: is that those two actually right? Yeah, it was those
- 24:42Speaker 2: two against each other. So so just to finish with
- 24:44Speaker 2: the Padres, because I don't think we've spoken since you
- 24:46Speaker 2: did that game. I mean, their two best hitters are
- 24:49Speaker 2: what like Gavin Sheets, Miguel and Duhar Campusano when he
- 24:52Speaker 2: was healthy. They're getting very little from the names that
- 24:56Speaker 2: we know. So everyone's sitting there being like, well, some
- 24:59Speaker 2: of these guys are a start to hit right the Tatis.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Maybe we'll figure out the mechanics of the swing.
- 25:04Speaker 2: Machado will get a little bit closer to his career norms.
- 25:08Speaker 2: Maybe Jackson Merrill finds it right, Like what did you
- 25:10Speaker 2: see when you were there?
- 25:12Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 25:12Speaker 3: I saw a little bit of all that, you know,
- 25:15Speaker 3: I saw, you know. I talked to Machado a little
- 25:18Speaker 3: bit about Tatis. He said, he's fine, He's in a
- 25:20Speaker 3: good place. Yeah, he's hitting the ball hard. But then
- 25:23Speaker 3: you know, when the rubber meets the road, you really
- 25:25Speaker 3: have to figure out, Like listen, I'll take a blooper
- 25:28Speaker 3: here or there, you know, just to keep going and
- 25:31Speaker 3: that home run it plays with you.
- 25:33Speaker 5: I don't care who you are.
- 25:34Speaker 3: Guy that can hit balls out of any ballpark, who's
- 25:38Speaker 3: a fantastic ballplayer, is going through it without hitting any
- 25:41Speaker 3: home runs. And I think that's that's what's going on
- 25:44Speaker 3: in his mind. You know, Machado needs to get it
- 25:46Speaker 3: going a little bit I think his swing is just
- 25:49Speaker 3: a little bit long right now. If he could shorten
- 25:51Speaker 3: up and maybe shorten that stride a little bit, I
- 25:53Speaker 3: think he'll be fine.
- 25:55Speaker 5: You know. And you you know.
- 25:56Speaker 3: The guy that starts it all off, Jackson Merril. You
- 25:58Speaker 3: gotta find a way to get on. And these games
- 26:02Speaker 3: are real close that they're playing, they're not putting up
- 26:04Speaker 3: many runs, and you know, Mason Miller has been that guy,
- 26:07Speaker 3: and you know, it's it's been one of those things
- 26:11Speaker 3: where they got to figure it out. And I think
- 26:14Speaker 3: this is a team that will. But as time keeps over,
- 26:18Speaker 3: we're getting closer to All Star Break the more we talk,
- 26:21Speaker 3: so they got to get going here a little bit,
- 26:23Speaker 3: and they're right there. But i'd like to see this
- 26:26Speaker 3: team kind of take off and we talk about them
- 26:28Speaker 3: going on like an eight to ten game win streak.
- 26:30Speaker 2: Yeah, and if they feel like their bullpen is going
- 26:33Speaker 2: to be elite, and they'll have enough on the starting
- 26:37Speaker 2: pitching side with guys like Michael King thriving, Nick Povetta
- 26:40Speaker 2: coming back eventually, et cetera. We know Aj Prilo will
- 26:43Speaker 2: just start wheeling and dealing right like even last year,
- 26:45Speaker 2: Ramon Lariano and Ryan O'Hearn.
- 26:48Speaker 1: Like he'll he'll replace guys.
- 26:49Speaker 2: I mean, you're not going to replace the big three
- 26:50Speaker 2: that we're talking about, but he'll replace others if he's
- 26:54Speaker 2: not seen enough there. Some wireless plans can get a

- 28:14Speaker 2: If you participate in gambling problem or concern, there is
- 28:17Speaker 2: help called one eight hundred Gambler.
- 28:25Speaker 1: So we just got word Trevor Story is actually going
- 28:27Speaker 1: to go through with the surgery for the sport turnia.
- 28:30Speaker 2: The Red Sox announced that Tim Healy, saying that surgery
- 28:32Speaker 2: usually requires six to ten weeks. They're getting hit hard
- 28:36Speaker 2: right now, Todd Father. We learned some more about the
- 28:39Speaker 2: Roman Anthony news that he suffered the setback once he
- 28:42Speaker 2: swung the.
- 28:42Speaker 1: Bat the other day. I don't want to say hit hard.
- 28:45Speaker 2: There's plenty of teams that are going through this right now,
- 28:47Speaker 2: but you know that's another guy that they're not going
- 28:49Speaker 2: to see for a while. I know some Socks fans
- 28:51Speaker 2: are going to be like good, he was terrible to
- 28:53Speaker 2: start the year, but he was good for them last year,
- 28:55Speaker 2: and I think having a hernia probably holds you back
- 28:59Speaker 2: a little bit and you're swinging the bat.
- 29:02Speaker 3: I mean, this injury, I feel like it's it's come
- 29:06Speaker 3: up at least once or twice a year, and not
- 29:09Speaker 3: just for Trevor's story, but some sort of baseball player. Yeah,
- 29:14Speaker 3: this one's tough. This one's tough. He still can play.
- 29:17Speaker 3: I love this guy. I love everything about him. He's
- 29:20Speaker 3: a leader, he plays a game the right way. I
- 29:23Speaker 3: had this Red Sox team doing a little bit more
- 29:25Speaker 3: than what they've been doing. Man, they got to find
- 29:27Speaker 3: find a way and figure this out. You know, I
- 29:29Speaker 3: thought their pitching was gonna be good this year. I thought,
- 29:34Speaker 3: you know, they're gonna take off a little bit more.
- 29:36Speaker 3: I mean, Roman Anthony, it's been a bright spot. At
- 29:40Speaker 3: the same time, though, when you're not winning, you know,
- 29:42Speaker 3: it doesn't really matter. Yeah, it's tough. Nobody's really talking
- 29:48Speaker 3: about him, and that you just brought it up. You
- 29:50Speaker 3: want people to talk about you, and the only way
- 29:52Speaker 3: they're talking about him is in not the best way
- 29:54Speaker 3: because they're not doing really well.
- 29:56Speaker 5: So this is this one hits hard. This one hits hard. Here.
- 29:59Speaker 3: This is another key that I was looking forward to
- 30:02Speaker 3: to having a really good year.
- 30:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:04Speaker 2: And for Anthony the news today from Sam Kennedy there President.
- 30:07Speaker 2: He was popping up on a radio show called The
- 30:10Speaker 2: Greg Hill Show. He said, Anthony has a sprain and
- 30:12Speaker 2: his ligament on the base of his ring finger no tear.
- 30:15Speaker 2: So that's what he's going through right now, which sucks
- 30:19Speaker 2: for the youngster. You can see where Boston is in
- 30:21Speaker 2: the Al East. I mean, the Rais are thirty three
- 30:23Speaker 2: and fifteen. Boston's eleven and a half games back at
- 30:26Speaker 2: twenty two and twenty seven.
- 30:27Speaker 1: This is why we have wild cards.
- 30:29Speaker 2: People, Boston fans already would be quitting on the team
- 30:32Speaker 2: and thinking about football season. Meanwhile, when you actually look
- 30:36Speaker 2: at the standings for the wild card situation, Boston is
- 30:40Speaker 2: if you guys didn't Jack.
- 30:42Speaker 1: Or here it is.
- 30:43Speaker 2: Look look where Boston is, like Trevor, look look at
- 30:46Speaker 2: how unbleldnah Boston is this year. They're two games out
- 30:51Speaker 2: two you know, Toronto, even Minnesota like these teams are
- 30:58Speaker 2: a few winter you know, win streak away, a few
- 31:01Speaker 2: games away from jumping into a playoff spot. Currently, if
- 31:03Speaker 2: the season ended today, the Rays taking the l East.
- 31:06Speaker 2: The three wildcard teams would be the Yankees, the White Sox,
- 31:09Speaker 2: and the Rangers. So like, for as bad as it looks,
- 31:13Speaker 2: if you if you swim right, if you just stay
- 31:15Speaker 2: afloat and guys come back and then you get hot boom,
- 31:19Speaker 2: you're in the playoffs.
- 31:21Speaker 4: Sincinatti Reds. They were eighty three and seventy nine last year.
- 31:25Speaker 4: That's we have twelve playoff teams. Guys, like, we're gonna
- 31:28Speaker 4: pretty soon, there's gonna be probably I here's I'm gonna
- 31:30Speaker 4: throw this out there.
- 31:31Speaker 6: I'm gonna throw this out this prediction.
- 31:33Speaker 4: In the next five years there will be an eighty
- 31:35Speaker 4: one and eighty one.
- 31:36Speaker 6: Team that makes the playoffs.
- 31:38Speaker 5: Yep.
- 31:38Speaker 4: Like you just have to not lose more than you win,
- 31:42Speaker 4: Like you don't even have to win more than you lose.
- 31:44Speaker 6: You don't lose more than you win, and you have
- 31:47Speaker 6: a chance.
- 31:47Speaker 4: And if you're around, uh, that's why this that's why
- 31:50Speaker 4: the trade deadline is kind of a kind of an
- 31:53Speaker 4: absolute chaos now is because there's like twenty teams on
- 31:56Speaker 4: the like on the fence now, like there's very few
- 31:58Speaker 4: teams that are out of it at that point anymore.
- 32:01Speaker 6: So that's a good thing.
- 32:04Speaker 4: They could be also like it could make it so
- 32:07Speaker 4: no one does anything. There's like downsides to it, but yeah,
- 32:10Speaker 4: you're always in striking distance, especially you know, we talked
- 32:13Speaker 4: about the Phillies, We talked about the Mets, like these
- 32:14Speaker 4: teams on paper whose ceilings are so high, if everyone
- 32:18Speaker 4: plays really, really well that you just need a run
- 32:21Speaker 4: at some point with without winning losing fifteenth straight at
- 32:24Speaker 4: some point, which unfortunately already happened to I think both
- 32:27Speaker 4: those teams almost got there, so like, it can't be
- 32:30Speaker 4: worse than that. So like tread water and then just
- 32:33Speaker 4: find that, get everyone healthy and see.
- 32:34Speaker 6: If you can go on that running.
- 32:35Speaker 4: If you can line everyone playing well at the same
- 32:38Speaker 4: time up, it really is anyone's game, including the teams
- 32:43Speaker 4: that maybe weren't expected to do a lot, maybe don't
- 32:45Speaker 4: have the highest ceiling.
- 32:47Speaker 6: Maybe your run won't be as long.
- 32:48Speaker 4: Maybe it's a six game win streak or a couple
- 32:50Speaker 4: sweeps or whatever you can still get into. It's just
- 32:53Speaker 4: about being hot at the right time. And now you
- 32:56Speaker 4: know it makes it makes September really fun because there's
- 32:59Speaker 4: just everyone. The playoff race is now twenty five teams
- 33:03Speaker 4: every year. It's i think it's an overall net positive,
- 33:07Speaker 4: but you know, you just gotta you just gotta believe,
- 33:10Speaker 4: and you just got to get the output when when
- 33:13Speaker 4: at the right time, And you know, we Dodgers keep
- 33:17Speaker 4: coming up. It's they've literally built it to do that,
- 33:20Speaker 4: like on purpose, and they have the ability to do it.
- 33:22Speaker 4: But if teams think that way and can build things
- 33:25Speaker 4: to build it so that they're hot at the right time,
- 33:27Speaker 4: or at least try to make decisions in that way
- 33:29Speaker 4: as you get closer to the end of the season,
- 33:31Speaker 4: you might build a sneak in and sneaking in is
- 33:34Speaker 4: all you need to really do at least step one.
- 33:37Speaker 1: Yeah, we've seen it.
- 33:38Speaker 2: I mean we've seen it with I mean the Blue
- 33:39Speaker 2: Jays last year we're around the five hundred marked then
- 33:41Speaker 2: took off after Memorial that we can we see the
- 33:43Speaker 2: Braves when they went in twenty one.
- 33:44Speaker 1: They weren't really clicking until August, right.
- 33:47Speaker 2: You see a lot of teams like in the five
- 33:48Speaker 2: hundred range close enough and they just take off as
- 33:51Speaker 2: late as August really to.
- 33:53Speaker 1: Make a playoff run.
- 33:59Speaker 2: This has become a thing again, Todd Father. You know
- 34:02Speaker 2: Bob Nightingale, who's one of our Insiders on FT wrote
- 34:04Speaker 2: about this a couple weeks ago, and people were all
- 34:06Speaker 2: over him.
- 34:06Speaker 1: Like the Tigers are going to be in the playoffs, they're.
- 34:09Speaker 2: Not trading Schoogle And then you know John Hayman putting
- 34:11Speaker 2: this out yesterday. Tigers have dropped fourteen of sixteen. They're
- 34:16Speaker 2: in last place, They're five games out of the wildcard race.
- 34:19Speaker 2: They have five starters on the injured list. Schooble is
- 34:22Speaker 2: progressing since that nanoscope. Chances to extend him or nil,
- 34:27Speaker 2: So he's talking about how the trade chances are quickly rising.
- 34:31Speaker 2: I mean, this is a total free for all. We
- 34:34Speaker 2: spoke about how the American League is not at its
- 34:38Speaker 2: peak in terms of how many dominant teams there are
- 34:40Speaker 2: that enables you to stay in the race, but they
- 34:43Speaker 2: are twenty and thirty one, twenty and thirty one. At
- 34:48Speaker 2: some point this team is going to have to go
- 34:50Speaker 2: on the reverse of that and start really moving on
- 34:52Speaker 2: a run. It's been an issue for them going into
- 34:56Speaker 2: the second half of last year, right they were running
- 34:59Speaker 2: away with things. Cleveland catches up in a historic comeback
- 35:04Speaker 2: in the division.
- 35:05Speaker 1: But now we're in twenty twenty six and this is
- 35:07Speaker 1: a problem.
- 35:08Speaker 2: They're missing their big boy that spills over past one
- 35:10Speaker 2: game because he goes so deep into outings. It helps
- 35:13Speaker 2: the Bullpen offense is not hitting like they just got
- 35:16Speaker 2: swept by the Guardians Todd Father in four games and
- 35:19Speaker 2: the Guardians are about double their output and run scored
- 35:22Speaker 2: so far in May. And you know, nobody's been bragging
- 35:25Speaker 2: about the Guardians offense much over the last few years.
- 35:27Speaker 1: That's taken a leap, Tiger's taking a step back. Add
- 35:30Speaker 1: it all up.
- 35:30Speaker 2: Do you think Derek Scoogle gets traded at the deadline
- 35:35Speaker 2: if they are over five games away from a wildcard spot?
- 35:39Speaker 3: I would helpe, so I would say yes, I think
- 35:43Speaker 3: it would be the time. I think, for one, teams
- 35:46Speaker 3: want to see him pitch and pitch a lot so
- 35:49Speaker 3: they know his arm is okay, yeah, you were right
- 35:54Speaker 3: the second half, even in the playoffs. Aj Hints is
- 35:57Speaker 3: a mastermind. But I don't know how he's going to
- 35:59Speaker 3: do with this. You know, I know he understands when
- 36:02Speaker 3: guys can throw and when to put him in mix
- 36:04Speaker 3: and match, But you don't have your number one gun.
- 36:07Speaker 3: You can't keep doing this through one hundred and sixty
- 36:09Speaker 3: two games. And if so, it's a miracle. So yeah,
- 36:13Speaker 3: this this is gonna be this is gonna be tough.
- 36:15Speaker 3: You gotta start winning games. You got to start hitting,
- 36:17Speaker 3: and you gotta start scoring a lot more runs. And
- 36:20Speaker 3: the offense, you know, didn't really put that much up
- 36:23Speaker 3: late to the end of the year, so you relied
- 36:27Speaker 3: on Trek scoobl Man. So this is this is gonna
- 36:30Speaker 3: play out a little differently here. I don't see them
- 36:33Speaker 3: doing really well even as they move forward, So.
- 36:37Speaker 5: It's gonna be very interesting.
- 36:38Speaker 3: I do see them trading him if they are five
- 36:41Speaker 3: or yeah, if there are a lot of games out
- 36:43Speaker 3: of the wildcard, for sure.
- 36:46Speaker 4: Yeah, one hundred thousand percent they should trade him because
- 36:51Speaker 4: he will not have a higher value then if he
- 36:56Speaker 4: is healthy and is cooking around the deadline like he say,
- 37:00Speaker 4: he's the number one guy. Look at all these teams
- 37:03Speaker 4: we just talked about, the three the playoffs, three pitchers.
- 37:07Speaker 4: If you've had Trek Scoubel to the three guys you're
- 37:09Speaker 4: gonna throw in the playoffs like every team needs it.
- 37:11Speaker 4: So the prospects or the talent you could get back
- 37:16Speaker 4: would be huge. You're not signing him coming back. It's
- 37:19Speaker 4: a team that has a very like latoon heavy offense.
- 37:23Speaker 6: They've been this way for a few years.
- 37:25Speaker 4: Kerrey Carpenter only faces varieties and then Dak McKinstry, and
- 37:29Speaker 4: you know, we were hoping, I think Kevin McGonagall would
- 37:32Speaker 4: be like the savior of the in the middle of
- 37:34Speaker 4: the order, but like Riley Green, started.
- 37:36Speaker 6: Slow, so they they don't.
- 37:38Speaker 4: It's not fully a complete offense, and it kind of
- 37:41Speaker 4: hasn't been.
- 37:41Speaker 6: They're not really built that way yet either.
- 37:43Speaker 4: They ask for a lot of value from guys that
- 37:46Speaker 4: don't play every day, and they mix a match, so
- 37:49Speaker 4: pitching has had to be the major strength. And then
- 37:52Speaker 4: the entire starting rotation got hurt, so that just hasn't
- 37:56Speaker 4: panned out. And and so you have to see you guy,
- 38:00Speaker 4: you got to you know, if you want to try
- 38:01Speaker 4: to get a long term solution to maybe the offense
- 38:05Speaker 4: that disappears from time to time and gets a little
- 38:07Speaker 4: bit of an emich, maybe that's the way that you
- 38:09Speaker 4: do it, especially even if you can sneak in at
- 38:11Speaker 4: eighty two and you know eighty like is that really
- 38:15Speaker 4: what you want to do and just not get anything
- 38:20Speaker 4: for Terry Stouble when he just leaves in a few months,
- 38:23Speaker 4: Like you better, you better get somebody and have a
- 38:26Speaker 4: vision for the future. And that doesn't mean just tear
- 38:29Speaker 4: it all down, but that does mean you got to
- 38:31Speaker 4: make that You gotta.
- 38:32Speaker 6: Make that choice.
- 38:33Speaker 4: And I think that if if we're not drastically better
- 38:37Speaker 4: at this point now, I will say the Nationals twenty nineteen,
- 38:40Speaker 4: they were nineteen thirty one at this point and then
- 38:42Speaker 4: they won the World Cheries, so they also had won Soto,
- 38:45Speaker 4: so that's a little different.
- 38:45Speaker 5: But you know, we want to.
- 38:49Speaker 6: Watch what happens.
- 38:50Speaker 4: He is somehow already almost back from his surgery in
- 38:54Speaker 4: like two and a half weeks. He very clearly wants
- 38:56Speaker 4: to be on the mound, and one of the big
- 38:58Speaker 4: reason they're not playing very well is because he hasn't
- 39:00Speaker 4: been pitching.
- 39:01Speaker 6: So we'll wait.
- 39:02Speaker 4: And see, but they better trade him if the dynamic
- 39:06Speaker 4: state anywhere near to where they are right now, come
- 39:09Speaker 4: come July, it better be better be on the table.
- 39:12Speaker 2: And I think they will if they're at that point.
- 39:14Speaker 2: That was the conversational offseason was, Hey, if you don't
- 39:17Speaker 2: trade him now, you're not going to trade him during
- 39:19Speaker 2: the season because the Tigers will probably be in contention.
- 39:21Speaker 1: Well maybe not if this kicks up.
- 39:24Speaker 2: Evan Woodberry posting this sat on Twitter during this sixteen
- 39:28Speaker 2: game skid where they've lost fourteen of them. They have
- 39:31Speaker 2: the second highest strikeout rate. That's the problem that I mean,
- 39:33Speaker 2: I'm sitting in jac today. He talks about constantly with
- 39:36Speaker 2: Detroit and he's like, they just don't have competitive enough
- 39:39Speaker 2: abs consistently. There's too much swinging miss. But also lately
- 39:42Speaker 2: there's no power lowest power home run ISO in baseball.
- 39:45Speaker 2: They've been a singles hitting teams from the tweet with
- 39:48Speaker 2: a one ninety four average and a lot of strikeouts.
- 39:51Speaker 2: No wonder they're not scoring any runs. So we can
- 39:54Speaker 2: talk about no schoogle and all the guys that are
- 39:57Speaker 2: on the IL.
- 39:57Speaker 1: And I know Troy Meltin's a big deal.
- 40:00Speaker 2: He'll be able to help them and we'll see how
- 40:02Speaker 2: he gets implemented over the next few weeks. Young talent
- 40:04Speaker 2: for them, who's got really good stuff. We got to
- 40:06Speaker 2: see what he was about in the playoffs last year.
- 40:08Speaker 1: But guy's got a hit. I mean, it's gotten so bad.
- 40:12Speaker 1: Bless you, Todd father.
- 40:13Speaker 2: Yeah, they're allergic to offense right now, as we can
- 40:15Speaker 2: see the notes right next to me. Dude, they're not
- 40:19Speaker 2: pretty right, And this is for the whole season. It's
- 40:22Speaker 2: been really bad lately. But you know, look at departments
- 40:25Speaker 2: here like power, right, if you're a big swing and
- 40:28Speaker 2: miss team, you better hit some baseballs over the fence,
- 40:33Speaker 2: and they're not doing that. They've got forty four home
- 40:35Speaker 2: runs this year. That's twenty fifth in baseball, right, Like,
- 40:39Speaker 2: this is not a team, This is not the contact team.
- 40:41Speaker 2: This is not the you know, the team that's going
- 40:44Speaker 2: to be able to string together big rallies. But they
- 40:46Speaker 2: need those two three run homers to win games and
- 40:49Speaker 2: you're not seeing a lot of that right now from them.
- 40:52Speaker 2: And it goes back to comments during the offseason from
- 40:56Speaker 2: their front office leader Scott Harris, who talked about how
- 41:01Speaker 2: they're going to be better in twenty twenty six based
- 41:03Speaker 2: on their young players taking the next step. Any team
- 41:07Speaker 2: can say that, you know, they didn't do much to
- 41:10Speaker 2: address offense. They felt like they didn't need to. That's fine,
- 41:13Speaker 2: that's their right. They also did have Kevin mcgonagal coming up,
- 41:16Speaker 2: who can swing the bat.
- 41:17Speaker 1: But it's not enough right now.
- 41:24Speaker 5: No, it's not.
- 41:25Speaker 3: We've talked about like how this, Yeah, they've had they
- 41:30Speaker 3: have McGonagall it's a great kid to have it's just
- 41:35Speaker 3: it's a top effect.
- 41:36Speaker 5: Man. You go to a team that's struggling and you
- 41:40Speaker 5: just get called up. You want to put your best
- 41:41Speaker 5: foot forward.
- 41:42Speaker 3: But then if the team's not doing well, you don't
- 41:44Speaker 3: want to fall in those traps, but they're right there
- 41:46Speaker 3: to fall into. Like you have to find a way
- 41:49Speaker 3: to play kind of for yourself. It's a it's a
- 41:52Speaker 3: selfish sport and team sport at the same time, because
- 41:55Speaker 3: you know you want to be there for a long
- 41:57Speaker 3: time and you've got to find ways to win games.
- 41:59Speaker 3: And when you're not, Oh we're going the same and
- 42:01Speaker 3: then you hate going to you don't hate it.
- 42:03Speaker 5: It's like, oh, we got to go back to the
- 42:04Speaker 5: ballpark again. Like it's a job. You got to find
- 42:07Speaker 5: ways to do your job the best and they're just
- 42:09Speaker 5: not doing it right now.
- 42:10Speaker 2: And if that continues, i mean, school's getting traded. They're
- 42:14Speaker 2: not going to let him go for nothing if they
- 42:16Speaker 2: don't feel like they're in the playoff mix.
- 42:18Speaker 1: We've still got time.
- 42:19Speaker 2: But yeah, this was the quote from December from Scott
- 42:22Speaker 2: Harris on the Tigers offense. Just because a lot of
- 42:24Speaker 2: the names look the same doesn't mean the team is
- 42:26Speaker 2: the same. And that's fair, Trevor. I mean, we do
- 42:29Speaker 2: this show every day in the offseason, so you can
- 42:32Speaker 2: believe in your team. But most of the time, if
- 42:35Speaker 2: the offense didn't look good for an entire second half,
- 42:37Speaker 2: and then it certainly wasn't pretty in the playoffs when
- 42:39Speaker 2: you're facing the premium pitching, if you're serious about making
- 42:43Speaker 2: a World Series, you need to figure out ways to
- 42:45Speaker 2: address it. And the answer is not always oh, let's
- 42:47Speaker 2: just spend money. I mean you can make trades. There
- 42:49Speaker 2: are other things that you can do. Of course, you
- 42:50Speaker 2: call it prospects like McGonagall, which was a good move
- 42:53Speaker 2: to start the season. They invested heavily in from Bivaldez.
- 42:56Speaker 2: But it's the bats man. It's the bats and if
- 42:59Speaker 2: it's it's not going to happen soon. You know, ten
- 43:02Speaker 2: games under five hundred a month from now is going
- 43:04Speaker 2: to be a problem.
- 43:06Speaker 4: Yes, yes, Sometimes it's not about the guys either. Like
- 43:09Speaker 4: I it's funny to hear say, hey, I know it's
- 43:12Speaker 4: all the same players, but the team's not the same.
- 43:16Speaker 6: It's kind of a weird way to say it.
- 43:17Speaker 4: That's not every People like what wait, what doing the
- 43:21Speaker 4: calculus in their head? What I think he means is like,
- 43:24Speaker 4: just because a lot of the players are the.
- 43:26Speaker 6: Same doesn't mean we're gonna get the same outcome.
- 43:28Speaker 4: And but when you look at it, it's got to
- 43:31Speaker 4: be a philosophical thing. How do we score runs? Does
- 43:36Speaker 4: that philosophy? Where are we doing that philosophy? Well in
- 43:39Speaker 4: the playoffs And the answer is yes, and I didn't
- 43:41Speaker 4: get the job done, then maybe the philosophy needs to
- 43:43Speaker 4: be visited, which then changes what you need from your players.
- 43:47Speaker 6: So like it sounds like.
- 43:49Speaker 4: And that could be frustrating thing for a fan base.
- 43:51Speaker 4: It's like, sounds like you're comfortable with the philosophy, the
- 43:54Speaker 4: philosophy of like we have guys who we have a
- 43:57Speaker 4: different line up against righties in a different lineup against like, uh,
- 44:01Speaker 4: there's no like true stud in the middle of the lineup.
- 44:03Speaker 4: It's just dangerous all the time that you have to
- 44:06Speaker 4: worry about and pitch around, Like that's kind of necessary. Again,
- 44:10Speaker 4: like the three year and homer thing in the playoffs,
- 44:11Speaker 4: they didn't really have that. That's that's you know, that's
- 44:15Speaker 4: why they went into every game was sixteen innings because
- 44:17Speaker 4: they had good pitching. We knew that, but like they
- 44:20Speaker 4: just didn't get the big hit or the big home
- 44:21Speaker 4: run that is necessary in the playoffs. So maybe the
- 44:24Speaker 4: philosophy wasn't quite needs to be adjusted, and it sounds
- 44:27Speaker 4: like he's like, no, the flaw we believe in the philosophy,
- 44:29Speaker 4: the flapia is the way that that we want it
- 44:32Speaker 4: to be. And then now we're just seeing what the
- 44:34Speaker 4: worst version of that philossie when it's not working.
