1:29
Speaker 5: show hope everybody enjoyed what was a beautiful weekend here
1:32
Speaker 5: in the Kanawh Valley. Metro News meteorologist Brian Hughes says
1:35
Speaker 5: we could see some off and on rain in some
1:37
Speaker 5: areas they kind of hit or miss. Should top off
1:39
Speaker 5: in the Emperor seventies rain possible tonight dipping down around
1:42
Speaker 5: sixty two or so, and for Tomorrow again some rain around,
1:44
Speaker 5: not all day, but just some scattered showers are possible.
1:47
Speaker 5: High is going to be in the mid eighties and
1:49
Speaker 5: then by Wednesday the rain chances are gone. With the
1:50
Speaker 5: high tempts are here possibly a record breaking temperatures in
1:54
Speaker 5: the low nineties by the time Wednesday rolls around. You
1:56
Speaker 5: can alto Metro News meteorologist Brian Hughes on air or
1:59
Speaker 5: on Facebook. Coming up, knaw Aunty, Commission President of ben Selango,
2:03
Speaker 5: is going to join us now. I do want to say,
2:05
Speaker 5: normally we get a Monday check in with our good buddy,
2:08
Speaker 5: former Charleston mayor, sheriff, legislator, restauranteur, actor and gravedigger Danny Jones.
2:16
Speaker 5: Danny had a medical appointment day. Everything's fine, just had
2:19
Speaker 5: to have something taken care of. But he'll be back
2:20
Speaker 5: with us next Monday. Also, Charleston lost an icon with
2:26
Speaker 5: the passing of the Reverend Jim Lewis. We going to
2:28
Speaker 5: talk about that coming up a little bit later. Plus

Speaker 5: friend from the West Virginia Symphony. It's Amanda McDonald. How
2:43
Speaker 5: you doing im?
2:44
Speaker 6: Good morning, Dave. How are you?
2:45
Speaker 5: I am doing fine? Thank you for being here. What's
2:47
Speaker 5: new with you?
2:48
Speaker 6: Well, we've always got music going on in Charleston, that's
2:50
Speaker 6: for sure.
2:51
Speaker 5: There is that, that's for sure.
2:52
Speaker 6: Other than that, I was just enjoying this beautiful weather.
2:54
Speaker 6: If this past week was.
2:55
Speaker 5: It gorgeous or what it was fage. So my wife
2:58
Speaker 5: yesterday we walked out of the grocery store, or maybe
3:00
Speaker 5: it was the day before, and I said, it just
3:02
Speaker 5: needs to stay like this year round. Somebody told me
3:04
Speaker 5: one time, you need to move to San Diego because
3:06
Speaker 5: and I've never been. I've never been to California for
3:08
Speaker 5: that matter, but they say San Diego is pretty much
3:12
Speaker 5: that way all the time.
3:13
Speaker 6: Yeah, I don't want it any hotter, any colder, No
3:15
Speaker 6: rain there.
3:15
Speaker 5: Was, Well, we got rain, as Brian Hughes told us,
3:18
Speaker 5: scattered around the next twenty four hours or so, and
3:21
Speaker 5: then record breaking temperatures possibly by Wednesday. It's just kind
3:25
Speaker 5: of fast forwarding straight the summer, that's for sure.
3:27
Speaker 6: But as I always say, you know where it is
3:29
Speaker 6: perfect temperature. Always here we go.
3:31
Speaker 5: Here's a sale jump in the.
3:32
Speaker 6: Concert hall and you can join us this Saturday, April
3:35
Speaker 6: eighteenth for something that I have never seen on the
3:38
Speaker 6: stage of the Clay Center before. I'm sure most of
3:40
Speaker 6: you have not seen this before the stage. It's the
3:42
Speaker 6: Clay Center Master illusionist Michael Grandinetti is going to be
3:46
Speaker 6: joining the West Virginia Sympathy on Saturday, so you're going
3:50
Speaker 6: to see magic meets music. So I cannot wait. This
3:53
Speaker 6: is going to be something we've been looking forward to
3:55
Speaker 6: all season. It's going to be the grand finale of
3:57
Speaker 6: our ZMM Architects at Engineers Pop series and we're gonna
4:00
Speaker 6: kick it off with some amazing magician and some magical feats.
4:05
Speaker 5: So what was it that led to the decision to
4:07
Speaker 5: have a magician here?
4:08
Speaker 6: Well, our pop series is always somewhere where we try
4:12
Speaker 6: to expand and play around with programming, so we try
4:15
Speaker 6: to do things that are fun and different, new that
4:17
Speaker 6: you may not traditionally see on the stage with the
4:19
Speaker 6: orchestra and the past, we've had cir Disilay, We've had
4:22
Speaker 6: cover bands from the Beatles and hard rock bands, we've
4:25
Speaker 6: butt Broadway. This time we're gonna be introducing again master
4:29
Speaker 6: Illusionist Michael Grandinetti. Michael is a lifelong musician magician, excuse me,
4:35
Speaker 6: not musician, the magician. I'm gonna have that lit.
4:38
Speaker 5: Well, But if he's a magician, he could pretend to
4:40
Speaker 5: be a musician, right.
4:41
Speaker 6: He is well, and he's very familiar with the music
4:46
Speaker 6: because not only will he be performing his magic tricks
4:49
Speaker 6: in front of the orchestra. They will be coordinating along
4:52
Speaker 6: with some of the music going on behind the scenes.
4:55
Speaker 6: So if you are a fan of our movie concerts,
4:57
Speaker 6: this Saturday is the perfect concept for you. You'll be
5:00
Speaker 6: hearing things from Harry Potter Et, lots of John Williams,
5:04
Speaker 6: leaders of the Raiders of the Lost Arc, so lots
5:08
Speaker 6: of familiar fun tunes, and then you're adding magic in
5:12
Speaker 6: front of it. It could not get better.
5:14
Speaker 5: I mean, it's one of the things. And I tell
5:16
Speaker 5: you this anytime we're on a show, and again we're
5:18
Speaker 5: talking to Maya McDonald from the Symphony. One of the
5:20
Speaker 5: great things I love about the Symphony is that you
5:24
Speaker 5: go outside the box from time to time, color outside
5:27
Speaker 5: the lines, if you will, use whatever metaphor you want
5:29
Speaker 5: to use. You guys are always doing stuff and not
5:32
Speaker 5: there's anything wrong with traditional music, but you guys are
5:34
Speaker 5: always taking it to the next level, as you said,
5:36
Speaker 5: with you know, doing doing rock music from time to time,
5:39
Speaker 5: doing movie nights and things of that nature.
5:41
Speaker 6: I love that, yeah, well, and I think the best
5:44
Speaker 6: part of working with the Symphony and being a part
5:45
Speaker 6: of the West Virginia Symphony is the fact that we
5:48
Speaker 6: can do both. You can have a fantastic classical music
5:51
Speaker 6: evening at the concert hall. We just did Carmen Lebrona
5:54
Speaker 6: with our West Virginia Siphony Chorus with hundred thousands, hundreds
5:58
Speaker 6: of voices filling the stage.
5:59
Speaker 3: I felt like just save thousand.
6:00
Speaker 6: It felt like thousands of voices because the hall was
6:03
Speaker 6: so full of music. But then we can really take
6:06
Speaker 6: something really fun and go in a different direction, like
6:08
Speaker 6: we're going to be doing this Saturday at the Clay
6:10
Speaker 6: Center at seven thirty at tickets our Adewubsymphony dot org.
6:13
Speaker 6: They started nineteen dollars a piece, so really really really
6:16
Speaker 6: affordable evening for a family to go out and enjoy
6:19
Speaker 6: this magic night. Michael's going to be doing everything from
6:23
Speaker 6: some hand of slide of hand tricks to some very
6:26
Speaker 6: large illusions. I hear that levitation is possible. I hear
6:31
Speaker 6: that he may be sawing a person in half. I mean,
6:34
Speaker 6: that's entertainment right there, It really is, And I think
6:37
Speaker 6: it's really fun to be able to juxtaposition the magic
6:40
Speaker 6: and the music and be able to bring everything with
6:43
Speaker 6: our West Virginia Syphony musicians on stage at the Clay Center. Again,
6:45
Speaker 6: not something that you get to see all that often,
6:48
Speaker 6: and a real gem to be able to have in
6:49
Speaker 6: Charleston in the Valley this weekend.
6:51
Speaker 5: I just I wonder what goes into this as far
6:54
Speaker 5: as the preparation goes, because I mean, you know, the
6:56
Speaker 5: folks of the symphony are true pros literally what they do.
7:00
Speaker 5: But I mean, you add something like this into it,
7:03
Speaker 5: I just think I just wonder about that. I'm a
7:05
Speaker 5: behind the scenes gay. I'm always wanting to know how
7:07
Speaker 5: this stuff works, and not the magic part of it necessarily,
7:10
Speaker 5: but how everything comes together.
7:12
Speaker 6: Well, this concert is a little bit different than any
7:15
Speaker 6: of our others because our musicians get some music and
7:17
Speaker 6: they work on that because of course, like you said,
7:19
Speaker 6: they are professionals and they want to come to the
7:21
Speaker 6: stage with the best music quality that they can, and
7:23
Speaker 6: they always do. But this is a little different because
7:28
Speaker 6: Michael knows his magic. He doesn't want to give away
7:30
Speaker 6: his magical secrets, so we won't actually see him with
7:34
Speaker 6: the orchestra until Saturday night, okay, at seven thirty. So
7:38
Speaker 6: a lot of times when we have guest artists come in,
7:40
Speaker 6: we'll get a rehearsal or two together the whole time
7:42
Speaker 6: with the conductor. There's no rehearsal with us, I mean
7:45
Speaker 6: there is. The musicians will be rehearsal, but I mean
7:48
Speaker 6: as far with him, there's really good.
7:49
Speaker 5: Well no, there's really no sound check for including him.
7:52
Speaker 6: No, there's not.
7:53
Speaker 3: No.
7:53
Speaker 6: So Saturday night will be the first time that Michael
7:56
Speaker 6: Randonetti and the West Virginia Symphony will be taking the
7:58
Speaker 6: stage together and performing serious magic and lots of different ways.
8:03
Speaker 5: Now what's his backer? Where's he from?
8:06
Speaker 6: Michael is, I believe from California, but don't take my
8:08
Speaker 6: word on that, but he is from all over. He's
8:10
Speaker 6: been doing this for quite some time. He does magician
8:13
Speaker 6: and illusionist shows along with orchestra shows too, so he's
8:17
Speaker 6: very familiar with incorporating that music musical element, and it's
8:22
Speaker 6: going to be quite a show.
8:23
Speaker 5: So what does the audience need to know when they
8:25
Speaker 5: come out for something like this, because I mean, again,
8:28
Speaker 5: it's going to be interactive, I mean to a certain
8:31
Speaker 5: example of your audience. I mean, so what does the
8:33
Speaker 5: audience need to know when they come out for something The.
8:35
Speaker 6: Audience needs to know to be open to all of
8:38
Speaker 6: the possibilities of what you might see on stage. Again,
8:40
Speaker 6: you're gonna be hearing a lot of familiar music, which
8:42
Speaker 6: I think will be really great for the evening, But
8:46
Speaker 6: make sure you keep your eyes open. We've had some
8:49
Speaker 6: media restrictions, which is not something we typically have on
8:51
Speaker 6: this too, so make sure you keep an idea as
8:55
Speaker 6: far as what kind of magic you might be seeing
8:58
Speaker 6: in every corner of the stage.
9:00
Speaker 5: Every corner.
9:01
Speaker 6: Yeah, just make sure you're fully present for this evening
9:04
Speaker 6: and it send me a really, really great evening. The
9:06
Speaker 6: end of the evening, we're actually going to be drawing
9:08
Speaker 6: our ten thousand dollars Symphony Rapple Winner two. The Symphony
9:11
Speaker 6: Rapple is a fundraiser we do every single year, have
9:13
Speaker 6: done for decades and is one of the biggest fundraisers
9:16
Speaker 6: for the year for the symphony and helps keep us going.
9:19
Speaker 6: So on the stage, we'll actually be drawing our ten
9:20
Speaker 6: thousand dollars Winter that evening too, So lots of exciting
9:24
Speaker 6: things happening along along with the concert on set.
9:27
Speaker 5: Also understand there's going to be a sneak preview of
9:29
Speaker 5: things to come. There will be every closive sneak preview
9:32
Speaker 5: for the people that come Saturday night.
9:33
Speaker 6: Yes, every time I come and talk with you, Dave.
9:35
Speaker 6: We talked about all this exciting stuff we have for
9:37
Speaker 6: the twenty six twenty seven season. Well we are finally
9:40
Speaker 6: almost to the point to be able to announce it.
9:42
Speaker 6: So if you join us at the concert on Saturday
9:44
Speaker 6: night in Charleston, you'll actually get a sneak peek hit
9:47
Speaker 6: that before everyone else gets to hear about it next week.
9:49
Speaker 5: Sweet good stuff. We're talking to Amanda McDonald again from
9:53
Speaker 5: the Western Dean Symphony, The Dave Island Show and five
9:55
Speaker 5: at Eline Branch. You impired by Pinnacle Consultants helping to
9:57
Speaker 5: identify environmental concerns such as that's just led molden, indoor

10:09
Speaker 5: because what you don't know can hurt you. Can you
10:12
Speaker 5: give us a little previews some other things going on
10:14
Speaker 5: after Saturday night?
10:15
Speaker 6: Yeah, of course. So I will actually wrap up our
10:18
Speaker 6: full twenty five twenty sixth season the first weekend in May.
10:22
Speaker 6: We'll be welcoming Barbara Nisman, who is a pianist not
10:26
Speaker 6: from West Virginia, but she is a West Virginia by choice,
10:28
Speaker 6: lives in Louisbourg, and she is a part of the
10:31
Speaker 6: West Virginia Music Hall of Fame. So she's going to
10:33
Speaker 6: be joining us that first weekend of May fastward to
10:35
Speaker 6: the next weekend, which is actually Mothers Day weekend, will
10:37
Speaker 6: be joined by the Charleston Ballet for a performance of
10:41
Speaker 6: Swan Lake. So this is the first time we've done
10:43
Speaker 6: that as well. So lots and lots of new and
10:45
Speaker 6: exciting things going on in the Symphony. And then the
10:48
Speaker 6: first Saturday of June will be AVN Corpse Symphony Sunday,
10:51
Speaker 6: which is our gift to the city, gift to the
10:54
Speaker 6: valley and is a full day celebration outside on the
10:57
Speaker 6: lawn of the University of Charleston. Free will be music
11:00
Speaker 6: all day by community events, community vans, and then we'll
11:04
Speaker 6: be wrapping up with the Symphony Concert Day eight o'clock
11:06
Speaker 6: that night, so a couple more concert opportunities and then
11:09
Speaker 6: again ABN Corpse Symphony Sunday is our biggest event of
11:12
Speaker 6: the year. We're looking forward to that. Hopefully this good
11:14
Speaker 6: weather will continue from now on until then.
11:16
Speaker 5: Fingers cross, all right, let's get back to Saturday Night
11:18
Speaker 5: tickets available.
11:19

11:35
Speaker 6: just going to be a fantastic time to keep into
11:37
Speaker 6: the world of the symphony. Like Dave said, we're going
11:40
Speaker 6: to be teasing out our twenty six twenty seven season,
11:43
Speaker 6: which I hope can come talk to you because we've
11:44
Speaker 6: had talk about some really fun out of the out
11:48
Speaker 6: of the park projects for next season. We've got a
11:50
Speaker 6: lot of those on their schedule.
11:51
Speaker 3: You know.
11:51
Speaker 5: My next guest is Canon County Commissioned President Bensulango. He's
11:55
Speaker 5: going to be in the studio. Any chance you could
11:57
Speaker 5: get Silango over there and saw him in half Saturday Night,
11:59
Speaker 5: I'm just tinring real well.
12:00
Speaker 6: There are some heightened weight requirements, so we'll have to
12:02
Speaker 6: talk to him about that, but we might be able
12:03
Speaker 6: to do that. Okay, all right, see watch check as schedule.
12:06
Speaker 5: All right, all right, Madam McDonald, give us the website

Speaker 5: Have you sold in half?
14:40
Speaker 3: You know, there's probably a lot of people that would
14:42
Speaker 3: like to.
14:42
Speaker 5: Do that at Cloning, Missus Sling would probably be one
14:45
Speaker 5: very often.
14:46
Speaker 3: That's true.
14:47
Speaker 5: But I mean it's kind of cool that that of
14:49
Speaker 5: the And I love the fact that the symphony does
14:51
Speaker 5: that sort of thing that they that they do different stuff.
14:54
Speaker 5: It's not just I mean the music's fine, but they're
14:56
Speaker 5: always doing like, you know, rock music. They're doing yeah,
14:59
Speaker 5: like the mix It Up movie themes and they're bringing
15:01
Speaker 5: a magician in Saturday night and this guy does like
15:05
Speaker 5: illusions of all kinds classic slide of hand stuff. He's
15:09
Speaker 5: going to be like all over the building. And one
15:11
Speaker 5: of the great things about this, and talking to Amanda
15:13
Speaker 5: McDonald about that, is there is no rehearsal. So this
15:16
Speaker 5: guy's coming in because he tours wherever he comes from. Now,
15:19
Speaker 5: the musicians will rehearse, of course, but working with this magician,
15:24
Speaker 5: he insists, I guess that there is no rehearsal. So
15:26
Speaker 5: the first time that he comes on stage is the
15:28
Speaker 5: first time he's actually seen.
15:31
Speaker 3: Well that's scary. Yeah, I guess he's really really good
15:34
Speaker 3: at it.
15:35
Speaker 5: Well, I mean, this is kind of one of the
15:36
Speaker 5: things that he does. But I think it would be
15:38
Speaker 5: I think you should step up to the plate and
15:40
Speaker 5: just say, you know, saw me in half.
15:42
Speaker 3: Listen. If he wants to do that, and there are
15:45
Speaker 3: people that want to see it, I'm in. I'm in.
15:48
Speaker 3: But he's just got to put me back together afterwards.
15:51
Speaker 3: If we can have that agreement, Oh there is that,
15:53
Speaker 3: don't leave me in a half.
15:54
Speaker 5: Hey, I wanted to give you a chance real quick
15:57
Speaker 5: to mention yesterday we lost to someone here in Charleston
16:01
Speaker 5: that everybody knew very well, and it's Reverend Jim Lewis,
16:03
Speaker 5: and I just wanted to give you an opportunity to
16:04
Speaker 5: maybe speak on it.
16:05
Speaker 3: Yeah, Reverend Lewis was He was a force, he really was,
16:08
Speaker 3: and he he did so much for the city. He did.
16:12
Speaker 3: You know, his heart was always in the right place.
16:15
Speaker 3: He really wanted to make a difference and he did,
16:18
Speaker 3: you know, the feeding the hungry and doing all that
16:21
Speaker 3: he could to help those that are less fortunate. He was.
16:25
Speaker 3: He's an icon.
16:26
Speaker 5: He started Man and Meal he did.
16:27
Speaker 3: Yeah, he did.
16:28
Speaker 5: And even up until the last couple of months. I mean,
16:30
Speaker 5: he was very politically active, and you know he had
16:33
Speaker 5: one of those those long arrest records. You know what
16:36
Speaker 5: that what John Lewis used to call good trub good Trump.
16:39
Speaker 3: I guess. I guess.
16:39
Speaker 5: So I'm gonna have Mike Pushkin on Metro News the
16:43
Speaker 5: day because they were very close.
16:44
Speaker 3: To talk about it. Yeah, Delia pushing knows him very well,
16:46
Speaker 3: and yeah, I think we'll have a lot to say.
16:48
Speaker 5: All right, So before we get into anything else, I
16:50
Speaker 5: wanted to talk about the continued success of the Shawnee
16:53
Speaker 5: Sports Complex because we had join Midday a couple of
16:56
Speaker 5: weeks ago just talking about the success of the travel
17:00
Speaker 5: Sports in general, but I want to specifically bring it
17:05
Speaker 5: back to the Kanaw Valley because this was an idea
17:09
Speaker 5: you had, you know, with some others, but mainly you
17:12
Speaker 5: years ago to develop this thing out there and people
17:16
Speaker 5: said it'll never work.
17:17
Speaker 3: You know, It's funny because I was at I was
17:21
Speaker 3: going through a security line the other day and one
17:25
Speaker 3: of the security guards, he was an older gentleman and
17:27
Speaker 3: he golfed at the old golf course and he said, Commissioner, Now,
17:32
Speaker 3: I got to be honest with you. I was really
17:34
Speaker 3: mad at you when you did that. And he said
17:35
Speaker 3: I was on Facebook and telling everybody it wouldn't work.
17:38
Speaker 3: And he was like, God, admit you were right. And
17:41
Speaker 3: I said, man, let me get that on video. Yes,
17:44
Speaker 3: you know it was. It was something that Knaw County needed.
17:48
Speaker 3: And it's funny now that we've done it and it's
17:50
Speaker 3: proven successful that how many other communities are doing it.
17:54
Speaker 3: I mean, Berkeley County now one hundred and eighty six
17:56
Speaker 3: million dollar complex that they're building indoor and outdoor. Because
18:00
Speaker 3: it works. It brings people in, they spend their money here.
18:04
Speaker 3: It's a great economic boost to the community. And I
18:09
Speaker 3: remember the first tournament that we did in twenty eighteen.
18:11
Speaker 3: And I've said this before, but it's kind of funny
18:15
Speaker 3: that when we announced the plan to build a Shot
18:17
Speaker 3: Eyes Sports Complex, I knew we'd be able to get
18:20
Speaker 3: it done relatively quickly. I wasn't quite certain when it
18:23
Speaker 3: would be finished because so many things are, you know,
18:25
Speaker 3: up in the air. But we had already landed one
18:28
Speaker 3: of the you know, a major tournament, like two hundred
18:30
Speaker 3: and seventy teens were coming to the Shawnee Sports Complex
18:32
Speaker 3: and we didn't even have a shovel in the ground yet,
18:35
Speaker 3: so there was a lot of pressure. Jamie Hazlett and
18:37
Speaker 3: his crew did a really good job, but so Tho's
18:41
Speaker 3: got his kids out there. The boys are out shoveling
18:44
Speaker 3: and you know, the tears out their work and pouring concrete.
18:48
Speaker 3: That the first three weeks of the tournaments brought in
18:53
Speaker 3: almost sixty million dollars and that was just for it
18:56
Speaker 3: to open. So you kind of it just keeps growing
18:59
Speaker 3: and grow and growing. And my hope is that we
19:03
Speaker 3: can even expand some more because the concept is proven,
19:08
Speaker 3: it works, and we need at least four more turf fields,
19:13
Speaker 3: and so we're looking at that now, you know, what
19:15
Speaker 3: can we do to expand so that on the spring
19:19
Speaker 3: and fall and even the winter tournaments, we're not just
19:21
Speaker 3: limited to six turf fields. We can actually use four
19:23
Speaker 3: more because most of the tournament's coming in now. If
19:26
Speaker 3: you look at the WVFC Capitol Cup, which is a
19:29
Speaker 3: great tournament and they run that so well, but they
19:31
Speaker 3: actually have to use other fields because Shawne's not big
19:34
Speaker 3: enough if you can imagine that, I mean Shawanee's huge,
19:36
Speaker 3: but we need more fields. They're expanding into Barbersville, so
19:41
Speaker 3: there's a way for us to actually keep more of
19:43
Speaker 3: that business here and I think it probably would not
19:47
Speaker 3: be that expensive to do it. So we're looking at
19:50
Speaker 3: that now and hopefully I'll have a proposal soon.
19:52
Speaker 5: And how many teams we're here for this cup a
19:54
Speaker 5: couple weeks, I know we talked about, but how many
19:56
Speaker 5: things were like two fifty or something.
19:57
Speaker 3: Like that has around two I think it was like
19:58
Speaker 3: two twenty two thirty. But you know that that tournament
20:02
Speaker 3: has brought in teams from Canada before. I mean people
20:04
Speaker 3: come in from all around, so you're seeing an influx
20:06
Speaker 3: at the airport. You're seeing, you know, a lot of travel,
20:09
Speaker 3: You've got all the hotels are full.
20:12
Speaker 5: There was that weekend that the couple's going on ben
20:14
Speaker 5: there was not a hotel room to be found anywhere. Yeah,
20:18
Speaker 5: I mean anywhere in Cable County, Putnam County. I mean
20:22
Speaker 5: there were there were no hotels.
20:23
Speaker 3: It works, and we've you know, we need some more
20:25
Speaker 3: hotels quite frankly, but you know, bringing people in. And
20:28
Speaker 3: if you look at the week before that, we had
20:30
Speaker 3: one hundred team football tournament out at Shawnee, and that
20:34
Speaker 3: that one was so large also that literally like real football.
20:39
Speaker 5: You're gonna go make it all the soccer people.
20:41
Speaker 3: You know, sorry I did that. The English people can
20:43
Speaker 3: be mad at me, but the uh yeah f O
20:45
Speaker 3: O T y f U T. But it was uh
20:48
Speaker 3: we had an American football tournament, one hundred plus teams.
20:52
Speaker 3: It was packed. We had people in from Missouri, We
20:56
Speaker 3: had people in, I mean just states that would never
20:59
Speaker 3: you know, people that company said would never come to
21:01
Speaker 3: West Virginia, and here they are. They come in and
21:04
Speaker 3: they get to see what we've got to offer. You know,
21:07
Speaker 3: sometimes in like spring summer, people will come and they'll
21:10
Speaker 3: play a game and then they'll go in they'll whitewater
21:13
Speaker 3: you know.
21:14
Speaker 5: Oh yeah, I mean and I mentioned this before. And
21:16
Speaker 5: I don't know, I don't exactly know how the schedules
21:18
Speaker 5: work out, but let's just say it's a Thursday to
21:20
Speaker 5: Sunday thing. Just use that as a repular Okay, they
21:23
Speaker 5: come in Thursday, they play at let's say ten o'clock
21:26
Speaker 5: in the morning. They may not play again until Saturday morning. Well,
21:29
Speaker 5: what are they gonna do? They gonna drive back to
21:31
Speaker 5: Missouri or or are are they going to do? They're
21:33
Speaker 5: going to you know, Okay, what's to do in this area?
21:35
Speaker 5: You know, let's let's go downtown or as you said,
21:38
Speaker 5: let's go Whitewater rafting. I know it's not the season,
21:40
Speaker 5: but I mean, you know, I'm just using that as
21:41
Speaker 5: an example.
21:42
Speaker 3: The first tournament that we had here in twenty eighteen,
21:45
Speaker 3: restaurants ran out of food. And I remember that I
21:48
Speaker 3: was getting calls from restaurants and this was a communication
21:52
Speaker 3: error on my part because I wasn't really letting them
21:55
Speaker 3: know the size of the tournaments that were coming in.
21:58
Speaker 3: I was just saying, Hey, we've got the USA sh
22:00
Speaker 3: Soccer President's Cup or the us US Soccer Eastern Regional
22:03
Speaker 3: coming in, and I wasn't telling them. By the way,
22:05
Speaker 3: that is also like ten thousand people, and so they
22:09
Speaker 3: just had their regular crew and the regular stock and
22:12
Speaker 3: everything was sold out. But it definitely works, and a
22:15
Speaker 3: lot of other communities are jumping on board and.
22:19
Speaker 5: They're calling us us meaning Kana County, you know. So
22:22
Speaker 5: they're saying, okay, exactly what did you do right? What
22:25
Speaker 5: did you do wrong? What would you improved upon so
22:27
Speaker 5: they can plan according.
22:28
Speaker 3: And I'm very candid about both of those things, particularly
22:30
Speaker 3: the things that I did wrong. I mean, gosh, I
22:32
Speaker 3: made so many mistakes when we were developing this, and
22:35
Speaker 3: looking back on it, I would have done things a
22:36
Speaker 3: little differently, but I'm proud of what we accomplished. But
22:40
Speaker 3: it was something that I hadn't really been done. I
22:42
Speaker 3: had studied facilities in other areas, and I studied a
22:45
Speaker 3: couple up in Canada and just to see how it
22:48
Speaker 3: was organized, to see how it was built. Our situation
22:53
Speaker 3: was a little different because of the depography, because of
22:55
Speaker 3: the you know, the soil, but we were able to
22:58
Speaker 3: get through all those issues and it's actually a very
23:02
Speaker 3: very nice complex. I'm proud of it. Our team does
23:05
Speaker 3: a great job. Katie Arthur, Samantha Karney, the whole team
23:08
Speaker 3: out there, does a great job. And it's not just
23:11
Speaker 3: a soccer complex. I mean we're doing football, baseball, softball, lacrosse,
23:15
Speaker 3: you name it. I mean we've played it there. We
23:17
Speaker 3: have the University of Tennessee a few years ago come
23:19
Speaker 3: and play lacrosse there. You know, it's a big deal.
23:22
Speaker 5: It kind of goes along with what you were saying Texas.
23:24
Speaker 5: Any chance of expanding that complex to include several baseball
23:27
Speaker 5: and softball fields which you mentioned earlier. The first little
23:29
Speaker 5: league softball games with this past Saturday and the Dunbar
23:32
Speaker 5: Ballpark with only one field, had kids from around nine
23:35
Speaker 5: am through the entire day. More fields would be more
23:37
Speaker 5: teams playing early. I'd love more I would love more fields.
23:40
Speaker 5: I'd love more fields. We need more space.
23:43
Speaker 3: But we do have that forty acres of grass area
23:46
Speaker 3: towards the river, and we're looking at that now what
23:51
Speaker 3: we can do with that. I mean, we've developed some
23:53
Speaker 3: of it, but it retains a lot of water and
23:55
Speaker 3: so it gets a lot of sometimes it's not playable
23:58
Speaker 3: and it's definitely not playable for football. So we're looking
24:02
Speaker 3: at maybe some additional turf fields down there. But we're
24:04
Speaker 3: going to look at estimates and see if it's economically feasible,
24:07
Speaker 3: and see what our return on the investment would be.
24:09
Speaker 3: I think it would definitely be a good return on investment.
24:12
Speaker 3: Even if you didn't put lights up, you could still
24:14
Speaker 3: just have the fields and use them during the daytime
24:18
Speaker 3: and then when it's nighttime, you just move everything towards
24:21
Speaker 3: the front of the park.
24:22
Speaker 5: Talking again with the Kanawha County Commissioned President Ben Selangova.

24:35
Speaker 5: Let's talk about the always exciting world of jail bills.
24:40
Speaker 3: It is the bane of my existence. Imagine getting an
24:45
Speaker 3: invoice every month for four hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
24:48
Speaker 3: That's exactly what the taxpayers at Knawk County are getting.
24:51
Speaker 3: Four hundred and fifty grand per month in perpetuity and
24:55
Speaker 3: it's only going up, you know, So we got to
24:58
Speaker 3: do something. This is the jail bill. Now what we're
25:02
Speaker 3: talking about. We're not talking about prison, and I don't
25:04
Speaker 3: practice criminal law, so it took a little educating for
25:07
Speaker 3: me too. But it's not prison. It's not like when
25:09
Speaker 3: somebody commits murder and they're convicted and sentenced. We're not
25:13
Speaker 3: paying that tab. The tab that we pay is from
25:17
Speaker 3: when they're arrested until they enter a plea or they're
25:21
Speaker 3: convicted at trial, and then after that it's on the
25:25
Speaker 3: state's time. So the goal is during that interim, what
25:30
Speaker 3: can we do to lower the costs. We're paying about
25:33
Speaker 3: sixty seven dollars I think it's sixty seven dollars and
25:35
Speaker 3: twenty three cents per day per person that's incarcerated. Now,
25:39
Speaker 3: some of these people are in jail and the taxpayers
25:43
Speaker 3: are paying them the equivalent of a night's day at
25:45
Speaker 3: the holiday inn every night. When the bond is like
25:50
Speaker 3: one hundred dollars. I mean, it's to me, it's inconceivable.
25:54
Speaker 3: And by the time that they come around, you know,
25:56
Speaker 3: the courts do a very good job. They're actually very efficient,
26:01
Speaker 3: particularly compared to some of the other counties. But they
26:05
Speaker 3: could stay there for six or seven months when the
26:08
Speaker 3: maximum possible penalty they could get as a year in prison,
26:11
Speaker 3: even if they're convicted, and most people don't get a
26:13
Speaker 3: year on a misdemeanor, right, So we're trying to have
26:17
Speaker 3: a common sense approach. And the approach that I kind
26:20
Speaker 3: of developed along with commission Wheeler and Commissioner Tenant was
26:24
Speaker 3: we need to look at the daily incarcerations. Who's in
26:30
Speaker 3: have they been in jail before? What is the crime?
26:34
Speaker 3: Is it a violent Crime's violent crime? We're not dealing
26:36
Speaker 3: with that. You stay there, you know, and that's up
26:39
Speaker 3: for the judge and the prosecutor. If it's something where
26:42
Speaker 3: there is a less restrictive method and less expensive method
26:46
Speaker 3: to accomplish the same goal, that's what we're going to do.
26:49
Speaker 3: We're going to try to either get them into a
26:52
Speaker 3: home confinement or some type of day report something other
26:56
Speaker 3: than incarceration. This is not being soft on crime. This
27:00
Speaker 3: is being you know, financially responsible because the outcome is
27:04
Speaker 3: going to be the same anyway. If it's a misdemeanor,
27:07
Speaker 3: there's only a certain amount of time they can do.
27:08
Speaker 3: I mean some of these people are you know, they're
27:10
Speaker 3: in there for some very minor, minor crime. Can't post
27:15
Speaker 3: on a hundred dollar bond and seven months later they
27:18
Speaker 3: get out and it's oh, it's time served. I mean,
27:20
Speaker 3: you don't even get you know, can you imagine, you know,
27:24
Speaker 3: some petty crime and you're getting like seven eight, nine
27:26
Speaker 3: months in jail before you're actually convicted. All kinds of
27:30
Speaker 3: issues with that. So and I'm not, you know, a
27:34
Speaker 3: softy on crime by handy stretch. I think people recognize that,
27:39
Speaker 3: but I think in this in this instance, we've got
27:41
Speaker 3: to just use common sense. We've got to make sure
27:43
Speaker 3: that we have this task force that we initiated. By
27:45
Speaker 3: the way, it was paid for by opioid settlement money.
27:48
Speaker 3: Because this is also an opioid diversion program. A lot
27:51
Speaker 3: of the crimes are still being committed as a result
27:53
Speaker 3: of opioid dependence. So well will the task force will
27:57
Speaker 3: come in and look at daily incarcerations. They're going to
27:58
Speaker 3: look at the people that are that are now and
28:00
Speaker 3: then every single person that is arrested will have the
28:04
Speaker 3: fire reviewed by this task force to determine whether or
28:06
Speaker 3: not there's a better option than just keeping them there.
28:10
Speaker 3: And the taxpayer is paying for it.
28:11
Speaker 5: And look, you know, Kanawk County is in a much
28:14
Speaker 5: better position than what some other counties are too. Now, obviously,
28:18
Speaker 5: Kanawak County is the largest county. But I mean you
28:20
Speaker 5: look at some of these other smaller counties. Want to
28:24
Speaker 5: pick on any of them, but the smaller counties in Westerngia,
28:26
Speaker 5: I don't know how.
28:26
Speaker 3: They do it. Well, they don't, you know.
28:29
Speaker 7: It is.
28:29
Speaker 3: The truth is they just don't pay Kanawk County.
28:32
Speaker 5: Somebody's paying for that though.
28:33
Speaker 3: Well it's got to fall back on the state, I
28:36
Speaker 3: would imagine, because they're just not paying. And listen, I'm
28:41
Speaker 3: not I get it. I mean there's some counties that
28:44
Speaker 3: it is a real, real struggle. Kanawk County is very fortunate,
28:50
Speaker 3: but if it keeps growing like this, we're not going
28:53
Speaker 3: to be so fortunate, and there will be a day
28:55
Speaker 3: where we say, wait a minute, we can't write the
28:56
Speaker 3: check for this invoice every month. So we've got to
28:59
Speaker 3: we got to do something. We've got to be proactive
29:02
Speaker 3: and take care of this. Now. The goal is to
29:05
Speaker 3: reduce the jail bill a million dollars per year, So
29:08
Speaker 3: I'm shooting for eighty to one hundred thousand dollars a
29:11
Speaker 3: month in savings so that our jail bill is coming
29:14
Speaker 3: in about three hundred and three fifty per month is
29:17
Speaker 3: the goal. And if we can get it down lower
29:19
Speaker 3: than that. Great, but you know, to be able to
29:21
Speaker 3: use the opioid settlement money, thank you, Attorney General, to
29:26
Speaker 3: be able to actually put that to good use, to
29:28
Speaker 3: save taxpayers money, to actually get people out into less
29:32
Speaker 3: restrictive types of environments where they're actually going to get
29:37
Speaker 3: some treatment, They're going to get some help. Maybe they
29:39
Speaker 3: won't reoffend. I promise you, as I'm sitting here, they're
29:44
Speaker 3: going to be able to get out and reoffend the
29:46
Speaker 3: same day. So we're ready for that. I understand it.
29:49
Speaker 3: I'm ready to take that heat. I get it. I'm
29:51
Speaker 3: hoping that we don't get non violent offenders becoming violent.
29:55
Speaker 3: That would be unusual, but that's something the task force
29:57
Speaker 3: will look at and we've got to I mean, the
29:59
Speaker 3: resumes on this a force. I mean we had sixty
30:02
Speaker 3: plus people apply. We picked the top four and their
30:04
Speaker 3: resumes are stellar. I mean, we have some really, really
30:08
Speaker 3: good people. They know the system, they understand how a
30:13
Speaker 3: lot of these I hate to call crime, but you
30:16
Speaker 3: know a lot of these defendants operate. They understand what
30:19
Speaker 3: motivates them, and they understand what is best to try
30:23
Speaker 3: to get a favorable outcome for them and getting a
30:25
Speaker 3: favorable outcome for them, gets a favorable outcome for the
30:29
Speaker 3: tax payers.
30:30
Speaker 5: Let me read a text hereous, So how many chances
30:33
Speaker 5: would that person be given before they're actually incarcerated? Sorry,
30:36
Speaker 5: but this time of practice is why crime is out
30:38
Speaker 5: of control in so many cities, because they get a
30:40
Speaker 5: slap on the rest, sent home, and they repeat over
30:43
Speaker 5: and over and over and then they get released over
30:45
Speaker 5: and over again with no punishment.
30:46
Speaker 3: Well that's actually not true, because what we're doing is
30:49
Speaker 3: I mean, they're being punished now, right. I mean, you
30:53
Speaker 3: can't have you know, a more aggressive system that we've got.
30:57
Speaker 9: Now.
30:57
Speaker 3: You know, we've got a prosecutor that puts people in jail,
30:59
Speaker 3: we've got great judges, we've got very good manstrates. They're
31:02
Speaker 3: trying to. Look, do they get it right every time? No?
31:05
Speaker 3: But nobody does. But I don't think that's a fair
31:08
Speaker 3: characterization to say that this kind of a catch and
31:11
Speaker 3: release program. What we're doing is we're trying to get
31:14
Speaker 3: these people help so that they don't reoffend. But whoever
31:19
Speaker 3: that texted that in, you know what, you're right, it's
31:22
Speaker 3: going to happen. We're going to let somebody out and
31:23
Speaker 3: they're going to reoffend probably the same day, and then
31:26
Speaker 3: they won't get out again. But you know, we've got
31:28
Speaker 3: to look at we've got to look at how we
31:30
Speaker 3: can save money on this issue. Otherwise we won't be
31:33
Speaker 3: able to afford anything. All we'll be doing is paying
31:36
Speaker 3: our jail bill.
31:37
Speaker 5: Yeah, and that's what that's the situation that a lot
31:39
Speaker 5: of counties are in. As you said, going back to
31:41
Speaker 5: the Shawnee Sports Complex for moment texts, that are the
31:44
Speaker 5: parking lots still from the sixties or seventies, I like
31:47
Speaker 5: that those six or seven years ago at Shawnee.
31:49
Speaker 3: No, Actually, our parking lots have been redone. We're actually
31:53
Speaker 3: in a phase right now adding more pavement. You know,
31:56
Speaker 3: concrete and pavement and blacktop is incredibly expensive and so
32:01
Speaker 3: one of the alternatives, not a great alternative. One of
32:03
Speaker 3: the alternatives is using gravel, and you know it just
32:07
Speaker 3: it doesn't work as well. But we had to use
32:09
Speaker 3: a lot of gravel. Otherwise it was added millions and
32:12
Speaker 3: millions onto the cost. So we do have a lot
32:15
Speaker 3: of paved parking, not from the sixties of seventies, it's
32:18
Speaker 3: only a few years old. If you look at the
32:20
Speaker 3: front of the park and this is the part where
32:23
Speaker 3: the pitch is the restaurant. We had some potholes there
32:27
Speaker 3: this winter. Every place had potholes. This we had. We
32:31
Speaker 3: had like like potholes that you would disappear in this one.
32:35
Speaker 3: It was a small child in but unfortunately you have
32:38
Speaker 3: to wait for it to warm up for that pothole
32:39
Speaker 3: patch actually work and so you can pour gravel in it,
32:42
Speaker 3: you can do whatever to try to save tires, and
32:46
Speaker 3: we were doing all that. Uh, those have been patched
32:48
Speaker 3: now the very day that had actually met the threshold
32:51
Speaker 3: temperature to patch. We were patching. Our guys went out
32:55
Speaker 3: and got just bags and bags of that pothole patch
32:58
Speaker 3: and they were out there getting it done. And so
33:00
Speaker 3: that part looks better. It quite frankly, at some point
33:03
Speaker 3: is going to have to be repaved. We'll deal with
33:05
Speaker 3: that when we deal with it. But on the back
33:07
Speaker 3: part of the park where the sports activity is, those
33:11
Speaker 3: parking lots look good. We're going to continue to upgrade them,
33:13
Speaker 3: but they look pretty good all right.
33:16
Speaker 5: Back to the jail bill, Texas, Why do you have
33:18
Speaker 5: to pay that much money a day on the inmate
33:20
Speaker 5: seems like it should be about two hu and twelve dollars.
33:22
Speaker 3: A day two hundred and twelve dollars a day ten
33:24
Speaker 3: to twelve oh ten to twelve dollars a day. Yeah,
33:28
Speaker 3: that's the rate that the state sets. That's what it
33:30
Speaker 3: costs to deal with. It's not just food. It's not
33:34
Speaker 3: like they're in there with their feet propped up, you know,
33:37
Speaker 3: getting room service. It's the cost of the labor. It's
33:41
Speaker 3: the cost of the incarceration, the cost of utility, is
33:44
Speaker 3: the cost of everything. That's what the average is about
33:46
Speaker 3: sixty seven dollars.
33:47
Speaker 5: All right, got a couple more things? Can you hang

36:29
Speaker 5: Selango is here. I want to talk a little bit
36:32
Speaker 5: about this law enforcement center. You talked about it a
36:34
Speaker 5: couple times ago when you were on the show. Where
36:36
Speaker 5: are we on this law enforcement center?
36:37
Speaker 3: What is it?
36:37
Speaker 5: Where's it going to be? And where what's the progress?
36:39
Speaker 3: So it's moving along, it's going to be out at
36:43
Speaker 3: canvigil tate exactly where the shooting range is now? If
36:45
Speaker 3: you go out there, it's in disrepair. I mean the
36:50
Speaker 3: last time I was out there, there are like the
36:52
Speaker 3: shooting platform is concrete and there had been so much
36:57
Speaker 3: erosion that there's just space between the concrete and the ground.
37:02
Speaker 3: I mean, like all that dirt has washed away. So
37:05
Speaker 3: that was and you could probably go in and shure
37:08
Speaker 3: all that up. But one of the other issues was
37:10
Speaker 3: we didn't have an indoor shooting facility there. We didn't
37:14
Speaker 3: have a place for law enforcement to train there, you know,
37:18
Speaker 3: like indoor and in situations. We do have a little
37:20
Speaker 3: house where they practice. And a lot of people don't
37:23
Speaker 3: know this. I think it's like forty some law enforcement
37:26
Speaker 3: agencies use that, including the FBI, they all go out there,
37:30
Speaker 3: and so we are upgrading it. We're expanding the shooting range.
37:35
Speaker 3: It's going to about about a three hundred yard shooting range,
37:38
Speaker 3: and we're going to have an indoor platform where they
37:42
Speaker 3: can actually park a car and practice shooting in and
37:46
Speaker 3: shooting out. You'd be surprised how many times our deputies
37:49
Speaker 3: have to shoot out of a car or if a
37:52
Speaker 3: car is, you know, trying to run them over, they
37:54
Speaker 3: have to shoot in a car. So when you do that,
37:57
Speaker 3: it actually changes the trajectory of the bullet depending on
38:01
Speaker 3: the angle of the windshields. So they're actually they're gonna
38:02
Speaker 3: practice that. I mean, this is something that is necessary
38:05
Speaker 3: to make sure they go home in the evenings. It's
38:07
Speaker 3: gonna cost a couple million dollars. We are in we're
38:10
Speaker 3: about ninety nine percent complete on the design phase. Zmm's
38:14
Speaker 3: taking care of all that for us, and then we'll
38:16
Speaker 3: start the construction phase. The goal is to put it
38:19
Speaker 3: out the bid in May, hopefully start construction in June,
38:24
Speaker 3: and be done within ninety days of that. So it's
38:27
Speaker 3: it's moving along, you know it. It's honestly not a
38:29
Speaker 3: complicated project. When I say indoor that I don't want
38:33
Speaker 3: you to think it's like some air conditioned facility, because
38:36
Speaker 3: this is basically a roof. Yeah yeah, uh so it's
38:39
Speaker 3: it's it's gonna be a much much nicer, It'll be
38:41
Speaker 3: much safer, and uh, I know, I know the guys
38:45
Speaker 3: in guys and gals in lawenforcement are looking forward to it.
38:48
Speaker 3: It's gonna be a great training venue, and I'm hoping
38:51
Speaker 3: this is the hope that that they can actually bring
38:54
Speaker 3: in uh uh some of the public. You know, we
38:57
Speaker 3: might be able to open it up a little bit.
38:58
Speaker 5: We'll see new on the Capitol Sports Complex front, we.
39:02
Speaker 3: Are waiting to see if a deal will be broken
39:04
Speaker 3: between the city and the mall owners. We're kind of
39:08
Speaker 3: just you know, patiently waiting on the county side, and
39:14
Speaker 3: I think on the city side, we're ready to go.
39:15
Speaker 3: You know, the city received that seven million dollars grant
39:19
Speaker 3: from Center Capitol and the Center Justice. Thank you very
39:23
Speaker 3: much for that, because that was kind of the hurdle
39:25
Speaker 3: we needed to get over to really push it forward.
39:28
Speaker 3: So I'm ready to rock and roll on it, and
39:31
Speaker 3: we just need to make sure that we have the
39:33
Speaker 3: right design in place, and that's going to depend on
39:37
Speaker 3: whether or not the mall comes in, whether they get
39:39
Speaker 3: part of them all, all of the all of the mall,
39:42
Speaker 3: or none of them all. If they get none of
39:43
Speaker 3: them all, then it will be a multi level sports complex.
39:47
Speaker 3: If they get either a piece or all of the mall,
39:51
Speaker 3: then it will be one level. If it's one level,
39:54
Speaker 3: we'll be able to do more because it's not as
39:57
Speaker 3: expensive to construct. Anytime you go up.
40:00
Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, well, I know that this is more of
40:02
Speaker 5: a city negotiation. But you hear things. Have you heard
40:07
Speaker 5: anything about it?
40:07
Speaker 1: Now?
40:08
Speaker 3: I hear things all the time. You know. My response
40:10
Speaker 3: is typically.
40:11
Speaker 5: Doesn't mean they're accurate because you hear them.
40:13
Speaker 3: Yeah, And I've talked to the mayor many times. I
40:15
Speaker 3: promise you there's not a day that goes by that
40:18
Speaker 3: the mayor's not thinking about this because the mall. As
40:21
Speaker 3: she knew when she ran for election, I think back
40:23
Speaker 3: in two thousand and eighteen eighteen, she knew this was
40:27
Speaker 3: going to be kind of an anvil around her neck,
40:29
Speaker 3: in the city's neck, because.
40:31
Speaker 5: I think Danny even said to her like something like, well,
40:33
Speaker 5: it's your baby now, or this is going to be
40:35
Speaker 5: the thing that you're going to have, something like.
40:37
Speaker 3: That, this is the thing and people can you know
40:39
Speaker 3: the problem is we've got a lot of development out
40:43
Speaker 3: court or g You've got your Low's your target, you know,
40:46
Speaker 3: the Walmart, so a lot of the traffic is pulled away.
40:50
Speaker 3: Then you've got Amazon, right, it's so much. It's so
40:53
Speaker 3: easy when I need whatever to just get on an
40:56
Speaker 3: app and have the mail or my friendly ups man
41:00
Speaker 3: drop it off at my door. And a lot of
41:03
Speaker 3: people are just work't going to them all because they
41:06
Speaker 3: were going out a quarter g or they were shopping online.
41:08
Speaker 3: So that kind of led to it wasn't really It's
41:11
Speaker 3: not like any administration did something wrong. It's not like
41:14
Speaker 3: Danny Jones did something wrong or the current mayor. No,
41:17
Speaker 3: this is just it's spending habits and it's customer behavior
41:21
Speaker 3: and that's just the way it is.
41:22
Speaker 5: Nor can they be the ones to fix it. I
41:25
Speaker 5: mean they can do what they're doing now. Ben, Well,
41:28
Speaker 5: what happens is is everybody and I read it online
41:30
Speaker 5: just like you who everybody says, well, the city should
41:32
Speaker 5: do this or the county should do this. It's a
41:34
Speaker 5: private company, and you get into a dangerous ground. As
41:38
Speaker 5: long as they are not operating in an unsafe manner,
41:41
Speaker 5: as long as they're paying their taxes. You don't want
41:43
Speaker 5: governmental officials going in and saying you need to do this,
41:47
Speaker 5: and you need to do that. I mean, that's a
41:49
Speaker 5: dangerous ground.
41:50
Speaker 3: We are very limited in what we can do. And
41:52
Speaker 3: you know, if they're violating you know, some type of
41:55
Speaker 3: safety code, then we can go in and can either
41:57
Speaker 3: make it, make them fix it, or condemn it. Or
42:00
Speaker 3: another option is to go in and take it. But
42:04
Speaker 3: if you take it, then you have to pay fair
42:07
Speaker 3: market value and you can only use it for like
42:11
Speaker 3: a public space, like a like a in the public sector.
42:15
Speaker 3: We couldn't then redevelop it into you know, some new
42:19
Speaker 3: fancy business. You know, if if Low's and Target and
42:25
Speaker 3: Walmart and all those businesses that people go to, you
42:30
Speaker 3: know every weekend we're at the mall, we wouldn't be
42:33
Speaker 3: having this discussion. But the fact is it's spread out,
42:37
Speaker 3: it's fractured, and customer spending habits have changed over the
42:41
Speaker 3: last twenty years. And that's just someone.
42:42
Speaker 5: Plus the model of a downtown shopping mall right across
42:45
Speaker 5: this country. I mean, because people say all the time,
42:47
Speaker 5: and I one of them, They'll say, we'll go to
42:48
Speaker 5: Barbersville that mall is flourishing. It is at Aceland Town Center.
42:52
Speaker 5: My wife and I were there a couple of months ago.
42:53
Speaker 5: It's flourishing, and you know, not downtown, and it's got
42:56
Speaker 5: free parking, and it's got all those those businesses I
42:59
Speaker 5: just mentioned around it because it's it's all in one location.
43:01
Speaker 5: So you can go to Barbersville and you can walk
43:03
Speaker 5: from Lows to you know, the mall or wherever you
43:07
Speaker 5: you know. The target's all there, so you're kind of
43:09
Speaker 5: in one location. You don't have to drive. And that's
43:12
Speaker 5: that's just the way it is. And we'll deal with
43:14
Speaker 5: it a couple of quick things here before we let
43:15
Speaker 5: you go. Have you heard where the new dunbar Bridge
43:19
Speaker 5: will be located.
43:19
Speaker 3: Will be the.
43:20
Speaker 5: Same same footprint or a new one.
43:23
Speaker 3: I do not know yet, but I did see the
43:24
Speaker 3: news come in that Senator Capitol was able to get
43:27
Speaker 3: a lot of money to do that.
43:28
Speaker 5: But I don't know exactly what made you all so
43:30
Speaker 5: is the Textra decide to choose Camp Virgil Tate for
43:32
Speaker 5: this facility. It's basically in the middle of nowhere between
43:35
Speaker 5: Cystonville and Cross Lanes. One of the reasons they stopped
43:37
Speaker 5: the Kanaw County Fair.
43:38
Speaker 3: There was the Kanawha County Fair there. I thought it
43:42
Speaker 3: was it Shawnee. Kana County Fair was at Shawnee. That
43:44
Speaker 3: predates me. Somebody else will have to let you know
43:46
Speaker 3: about that. So the reason we did is because there's
43:48
Speaker 3: already a shooting range there. We've already got significant investment there,
43:52
Speaker 3: including law enforcement buildings there. It would probably cost a
43:57
Speaker 3: lot more money to put it somewhere else, although we
43:59
Speaker 3: did look I mean we actually looked at putting it
44:01
Speaker 3: on the outskirts of Saint Albans. We've looked at potentially
44:05
Speaker 3: putting it in like Cisonville Elview area, and I think
44:09
Speaker 3: the costs would probably triple of what it will be
44:13
Speaker 3: to have it at Campbell's. Virgil Take want to mention
44:16
