Latest / Reformed Thinking / New Birth: The Fuel of Missions
Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to reform thinking. It's good.
- 0:01To be here. We have a a really significant
- 0:04topic on the table today. We're looking at a piece of
- 0:07writing that frankly challenges a lot of the modern assumptions
- 0:12about what Christian missions actually look like.
- 0:14It certainly does. It just, you know, it cuts right
- 0:16through the noise of strategies and logistics and goes straight
- 0:19to the heart of the matter. It asks the question what is the
- 0:23engine under the hood? And the article we're going to
- 0:26be unpacking is titled New Birth.
- 0:28The Fuel of Missions is written by Jonathan Master.
- 0:32And for those who might not be familiar with him, Jonathan
- 0:34Master is the president of Greenville Presbyterian
- 0:37Theological Seminary. So he's someone who thinks very
- 0:40seriously about the intersection of, you know, theology and
- 0:43practice. He isn't writing from an ivory
- 0:45tower. He's writing about how this high
- 0:47level doctrine actually hits the pavement.
- 0:50And that's exactly what this article feels like.
- 0:52It's a bridge between a high theological concept, the
- 0:55doctrine of regeneration, and the very practical, on the
- 0:59ground work of sending people out to share the gospel.
- 1:02Which is a necessary bridge to build.
- 1:04I mean, so often we keep those two things in separate silos.
- 1:07We have systematic theology over here and missiology over there.
- 1:11Masters just smashing that wall down.
- 1:13So let's start with the hook here.
- 1:15When most people you know, what do you think of missions?
- 1:18What comes to mind if I say missionary?
- 1:20What's the immediate mental image?
- 1:23For most, it's probably action or geography.
- 1:27Usually it's a map, right? It's geography.
- 1:28It's a plane ticket. It's the act of going somewhere.
- 1:32Or doing something, digging a well, building a school,
- 1:35preaching A sermon. It's very, very action oriented
- 1:39in our minds. But Master flips that
- 1:41immediately. Yeah, he argues that missions
- 1:44isn't primarily about going or doing.
- 1:47Yeah, it starts with being. Specifically, being born again.
- 1:50And that is the whole game right there.
- 1:53The thesis here is fascinating. He calls the doctrine of the new
- 1:56birth The Fountainhead. That is the keyword, The
- 1:58Fountainhead. It's such a perfect analogy.
- 2:00And everything else, the going, the preaching, the endurance, it
- 2:03all flows from that single source.
- 2:06Yeah, and if you get that wrong, or if you ignore it, the entire
- 2:10missionary enterprise collapses. It might look busy on the
- 2:13outside, but it has no steam. It's a car without an engine.
- 2:17I mean, you can push it downhill for a little while, but it is
- 2:20not driving anywhere under its own power.
- 2:22So for this deep dive, we're going to walk through this
- 2:25argument step by step. We're going to look at what the
- 2:28new birth actually is, how it defines A missionary's identity,
- 2:32the the terrifying possibility of an unconverted minister,
- 2:37which is a story we absolutely have to get to, and then the
- 2:40specific methods that logically follow this doctrine.
- 2:43It's a logical progression. That's what I really appreciate
- 2:45about masters writing. It's not a collection of
- 2:47thoughts, it's a chain of logic. If A is true, then B must follow
- 2:52all. Right, let's start at the
- 2:53beginning then. Section 1, The Fountainhead.
- 2:55We need to define our terms. When Master talks about new
- 2:59birth or regeneration, what are we actually talking about?
- 3:03He's drawing on a just a wealth of biblical imagery here.
- 3:06He describes it as a change from the inside out.
- 3:09This isn't just, you know, turning over a new leaf or
- 3:11deciding to be a better person. It's not behavioral
- 3:14modification. No, not at all.
- 3:16It is a supernatural act. Master points out that this is
- 3:19brought about by God's Holy Spirit and by His Word.
- 3:23It is God doing the work, not us.
- 3:25He brings us straight to Jesus's words in John chapter 3.
- 3:28He has to verse 3. Unless one is born again, he
- 3:32cannot see the Kingdom of God. That is such a categorical
- 3:35statement, there's no wiggle. Room there it is absolute.
- 3:38There's no seeing the Kingdom, let alone working for the
- 3:41Kingdom, without this fundamental God wrought change.
- 3:44I want to go back to that word fountainhead that master uses.
- 3:47It is such a specific image. A fountainhead.
- 3:50Is the spring the actual source where begins right?
- 3:54And think about the implication of that analogy.
- 3:56If you are downstream, the quality of the water, the very
- 3:59existence of the water, depends entirely on The Fountainhead.
- 4:02If the source dries up. The river dries up if the source
- 4:05is polluted, the river is polluted.
- 4:06It's that simple. So masters arguing that
- 4:09missions, all of it is the stream.
- 4:12Correct missions is the stream that flows out of the reality of
- 4:16the new birth. If you try to have the stream
- 4:18without the source, you are just digging a dry ditch.
- 4:22It might look like a riverbed, but there's no life in it.
- 4:25That puts a tremendous amount of weight on this one doctrine.
- 4:27It's not just one item on a theological checklist.
- 4:30No, it's the prerequisite for everything, and Master connects
- 4:33this directly to identity. He takes us right over to 1st
- 4:36John Chapter 5. Everyone who has been born of
- 4:39God overcomes the world. And verse one as well, Everyone
- 4:42who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God.
- 4:46This creates a family dynamic. It's a whole new identity.
- 4:50Master points out that Christians share an inheritance.
- 4:53The text mentions Christ as our elder brother.
- 4:55Which is a beautiful biblical way to view it.
- 4:58If we are born of God, we are adopted into the family.
- 5:01We share the status of the Son. That is our core identity.
- 5:04So a missionary isn't just an employee of an agency or a
- 5:08social worker with a Bible. They are a child of God going
- 5:11out to find other potential children of God.
- 5:14But here is where the rubber meets the road Master issues a
- 5:18pretty stark warning here about syncretism.
- 5:21Yes, this is where the identity argument gets applied to real
- 5:26world, often messy mission field issues.
- 5:29And for you listening, syncretism is essentially
- 5:31blending different religions or beliefs together.
- 5:33Right. It's saying we can follow Jesus,
- 5:36but we can also keep worshipping these local gods, or we can mix
- 5:40the gospel with these cultural idols.
- 5:42It's a compromise. And master says absolutely not.
- 5:45He says that this new identity being born of God is completely
- 5:49undermined. If we allow that, his argument
- 5:52is again logic based. You cannot share inheritance
- 5:55with Christ and fail to own His name exclusively.
- 5:58You can't be part of the family and deny the head of the.
- 6:00Family precisely. If the new birth is real, if it
- 6:03has actually happened, it creates an allegiance that is
- 6:06exclusive. It overcomes the world.
- 6:08It does not accommodate the world's false worship.
- 6:10So any mission movement that down plays the exclusivity of
- 6:13Christ or allows for the worship of false gods alongside Jesus.
- 6:18Has forgotten the doctrine of the new birth.
- 6:20They've polluted The Fountainhead.
- 6:21It seems like we often want to make the gospel easier to
- 6:24swallow, you know, so we might soften those edges.
- 6:27But Master is saying that denies the very nature of who we now
- 6:30are in Christ. It denies the spiritual DNA of
- 6:33the new birth. It's a fundamental
- 6:35contradiction. Now this leads us into probably
- 6:37the most jarring section of the article.
- 6:39For me, and I think for a lot of people in ministry, it will be.
- 6:42We are talking about the danger of the unconverted minister.
- 6:46It's a historical reality that I think we often prefer to forget.
- 6:50Master tells the story of Thomas Chalmers.
- 6:52Can you, can you walk us through that?
- 6:54Thomas Chalmers was a very famous Scottish minister in the
- 6:5819th century, a huge figure, and the key detail here is that he
- 7:02was already ordained, he was already preaching every Sunday.
- 7:05He was, by all professional standards, a minister of the
- 7:08Gospel. He had the job, he had the
- 7:10title, he had the. Pulpit, but by his own admission
- 7:13later in life, he had not been born again at that time.
- 7:16That is just terrifying. It should be.
- 7:18He was doing the work of the ministry without the spiritual
- 7:22life that is supposed to fuel it.
- 7:24He was a professional clergyman, but he was, in his own words,
- 7:28spiritually dead. And eventually he was converted.
- 7:30He was, and it revolutionized everything about his ministry,
- 7:34his preaching, his passion. Everything changed.
- 7:37But Master uses this anecdote to force Acela Moment, a moment of
- 7:43pause for the reader, for all of us.
- 7:47He challenges us to consider our own state.
- 7:49It's a direct call to self examination and it's not just
- 7:53for missionaries on the field. It's for pastors, elders, church
- 7:56leaders, donors. Just because you're involved in
- 7:59the work does not guarantee you're born again.
- 8:01It is possible to preach the gospel without a living
- 8:04knowledge of Christ. That's the phrase Master uses,
- 8:06and it is a chilling thought. You can deliver the mail without
- 8:09ever reading the letter. You can be a tour guide who
- 8:11points the way to a city you have never actually visited
- 8:14yourself. So what is the remedy?
- 8:16Master doesn't just leave us in the terror of that thought.
- 8:19No. He points immediately to the
- 8:21urgency and the availability of salvation.
- 8:24He quotes 6 Corinthians 6.2. Now is the acceptable time.
- 8:28Now is the day of salvation. And John 6.37.
- 8:32Whoever comes to me, I will not cast out.
- 8:34That's the balance, isn't it? The warning is severe.
- 8:37You must be born again. And that italics is in the text
- 8:40you must. It is not optional, it's a
- 8:42divine command. But the invitation is wide open.
- 8:45The door is open right now. It is, the text emphasizes, that
- 8:49there is a day of judgement coming.
- 8:51It puts the stakes in perspective.
- 8:53This is why Missions is not hobby because eternity is real
- 8:56and for the missionary themselves, their own soul is on
- 8:59the line. Master is basically saying,
- 9:01before you go to save the world, make absolutely certain that you
- 9:04know the Savior. This focus on the internal state
- 9:06of the missionary. This leads directly into the
- 9:09next logical point, which is the question of character and
- 9:11qualification. Which is section three of our
- 9:13discussion. The Who?
- 9:14Master makes a clear link between the new birth and
- 9:17sanctification. Again, you can see the
- 9:19theological flow. New birth is the starting line.
- 9:23It is the moment of life. Sanctification is the process of
- 9:26growing up. It's the growth in holiness that
- 9:29naturally necessarily follows a true spiritual birth.
- 9:33You don't stay a baby forever. Spot on.
- 9:36If there is life, there will be growth, and Master argues that
- 9:39because the new birth is The Fountainhead of sanctification,
- 9:42character matters immensely. You cannot separate the message
- 9:46from the messenger's life. He brings up a biblical model
- 9:49for this Acts 13. The first missionary journey,
- 9:52Paul and Barnabas. I mean, these are the heavy
- 9:54hitters. This is the prototype.
- 9:55They are and notice the process. The Holy Spirit set them apart.
- 10:00The text says. Set apart for me Barnabas and
- 10:03Saul for the work to which I have called them.
- 10:05Master points out that these weren't random volunteers who
- 10:07just raised their hands. Right.
- 10:09They were not men of questionable character.
- 10:11They were not untrained novices. They were leaders in the church
- 10:13at Antioch. They were proven.
- 10:14They were qualified. The Spirit chose qualified men.
- 10:17I think this touches on a nerve in modern missions.
- 10:20Master discusses the tendency to well to lower the bar.
- 10:24It's a very common temptation and you can almost understand it
- 10:27from a human perspective. We look at the world, we see the
- 10:30billions of unreached people and we think we just need bodies, we
- 10:35need boots on the ground. Anyone will do?
- 10:37It's the warm body theory of recruitment.
- 10:39Precisely. And we can have these very high
- 10:42standards for a pastor in an established church back home,
- 10:46you know, seminary degrees, years of vetting, character
- 10:50exams. But for the missionary, going to
- 10:52the frontier, to the hardest places.
- 10:54Oh, you have a passport and a pulse?
- 10:55Go ahead. And Master pushes back hard on
- 10:58that. He argues we must not lower
- 11:00standards. In fact, if you really think
- 11:02about it, the work of evangelism and church planting in a hostile
- 11:06or unreached context probably requires more character, more
- 11:09maturity, not less. Of course, because they don't
- 11:12have the support structure of an established church all around
- 11:14them, right? They are out there on the edge.
- 11:16If the character is not there, if the new birth reality has not
- 11:19produced deep sanctification, they will crumble.
- 11:22Or worse, much worse, they will disqualify the message by their
- 11:25behavior and bring shame on the name of Christ.
- 11:27So the argument is simple. High stakes require high
- 11:30standards. And those standards are rooted
- 11:32in the reality of the new birth and the growth that flows from
- 11:36it. OK.
- 11:36So we have established the identity and the qualifications
- 11:40The Who. Now let's talk about the how.
- 11:43Section 4 focuses on methods and Master highlights 2,
- 11:47specifically prayer and preaching.
- 11:50And again, I really want you, the listener, to catch the logic
- 11:53here. He doesn't just pick these two
- 11:54out of a hat because they sound spiritual.
- 11:56They are the necessary consequences of the doctrine of
- 11:59the new birth. Let's start with prayer.
- 12:02Why does the new birth necessitate prayer as a primary
- 12:06method? Because of the nature of the
- 12:08work. If the new birth is a
- 12:09supernatural work. If it is the Spirit of God
- 12:12raising a dead soul to life, then can a human being
- 12:15manufacture that? No, I can't wake up a dead.
- 12:18Person precisely. You can argue with someone, you
- 12:21can persuade them, you can use emotional appeals, but you
- 12:24cannot impart spiritual life. Only God can do that.
- 12:27So if we can't do it. Then we must ask the one who
- 12:31can. That is why we pray.
- 12:33That is why prayer is not an optional add on to missions.
- 12:36It is the main work. Master says we must give heaven
- 12:40no rest. It has a striking phrase.
- 12:43It implies a desperate dependence.
- 12:45If we really believe that missions is about the new birth,
- 12:48then we realize we are utterly helpless without the Holy
- 12:50Spirit. He's careful to say that
- 12:52organizations and plans and goals are fine.
- 12:55They. Are they're necessary tools?
- 12:57But, he says, never at the expense of dependence on the
- 12:59Spirit. And it is so easy to rely on the
- 13:02strategy, isn't it? If we just have the right five
- 13:04year plan, if we get the funding, the revival will
- 13:06happen. That's the corporate mindset
- 13:08creeping into the church, but the Spirit blows where He wills.
- 13:12We cannot control him, we cannot schedule him, but we can plead
- 13:15with Him. So prayer is the active
- 13:17acknowledgement of our inability in God's sovereign power?
- 13:19Yes. It's the engine room of
- 13:21missions. Now what about preaching?
- 13:23Why is that the other non negotiable method?
- 13:26This goes back to the mechanism that God himself has chosen.
- 13:30How does the Spirit bring about the new birth?
- 13:31How does he perform this miracle?
- 13:33Through the word. Through the proclamation of the
- 13:36Word, Romans 10, faith comes by hearing and hearing through the
- 13:40word of Christ. So master calls this the primacy
- 13:43of preaching. He says it is non negotiable.
- 13:46If you remove the clear proclamation of the Word of God,
- 13:50you have removed the very tool, the very scalpel the Spirit uses
- 13:54to create life. It brings to mind that quote
- 13:57from the article. It is through the proclamation
- 13:59of God's Word that dead souls are brought to life.
- 14:02And this is where Master draws a very hard line.
- 14:05He says there is no room for compromise here.
- 14:07Missions that are truly committed to the new birth must
- 14:10be committed to preaching. That directly challenges some
- 14:13modern approaches that might focus entirely on social justice
- 14:16or humanitarian aid, hoping that the gospel is just kind of
- 14:20caught by observation. Look, humanitarian aid is good.
- 14:23It's wonderful. Christians should be the
- 14:24kindest, most helpful people on the planet.
- 14:27But if the goal is the new birth which brings eternal life, then
- 14:31the Word must be spoken. People are not born again by
- 14:34watching us dig a well. They are born again by hearing
- 14:37the gospel of Jesus Christ and the Spirit applying that word to
- 14:41their dead hearts. So if we strip away preaching,
- 14:44we are stripping away the power. We are stripping away the seed.
- 14:48You can water the ground and fertilize it all day long, but
- 14:51if you never plant the seed of the Word, nothing eternal grows.
- 14:55We've covered The Who, the how and the what.
- 14:58Now we get to the why, Section 5, the fuel and the motivation.
- 15:03This brings us right back to the title of the article.
- 15:06This is the engine itself. Master quotes John Layton
- 15:09Wilson. It's a really beautiful passage.
- 15:11He talks about the spontaneous feeling of every regenerate
- 15:15heart. That word spontaneous is so
- 15:17important. It suggests that mission is not
- 15:19something that has to be forced upon a Christian from the
- 15:22outside like a heavy. Burden.
- 15:23It bubbles up from within. Right.
- 15:25Wilson asks. When a heart feels the freshness
- 15:28of atoning blood, when you realize what's been done for
- 15:30you, what is the first question it asks?
- 15:33Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?
- 15:36And the answer comes from heaven.
- 15:38Go into all the world. This is what he calls the
- 15:40motivation loop. It is the doctrine of
- 15:43regeneration is not just a dry theological fact to be filed
- 15:47away. It is the fuel.
- 15:50Think about it. When you realize you were
- 15:51spiritually dead and now you are alive, when you realize you were
- 15:55guilty and condemned, and now you are washed clean in the
- 15:58blood of Christ, what is the natural spontaneous reaction?
- 16:02Gratitude. Overwhelming love.
- 16:05A desire to tell someone else. Precisely.
- 16:08You don't share the gospel because you are trying to earn
- 16:10points with God. You share it because you are so
- 16:13overwhelmed by what He has already done for you that you
- 16:15can't keep it in. So if a church or a person lacks
- 16:18missionary zeal. It might be a symptom.
- 16:21It might be because they have lost sight of the wonder of
- 16:23their own new birth. They've forgotten what they were
- 16:25safe from and what they were safe for.
- 16:27The fuel tank is running low. Master gets very, very serious
- 16:30here about the alternative. He brings up the Broad Rd.
- 16:33The Broad Road to destruction from Matthew 7.
- 16:35It is a grim reminder, he says. Many are on the broad road to
- 16:38destruction. And this is the urgency.
- 16:41This is why it all matters. If the new birth is the only way
- 16:45to see the Kingdom of God, then those without it are perishing,
- 16:49and we know people who are on that road.
- 16:51He warns that if we forget regeneration, we forget Christ.
- 16:55And that is the ultimate danger. We might go out in God's name,
- 16:58but if we are not carrying the message of reconciliation, which
- 17:01requires A biblical understanding of conversion, we
- 17:04are offering a placebo to dying people.
- 17:06We are offering a false hope. He specifically says we must
- 17:10refuse missions that are devoid of real Trinitarian theology.
- 17:13Because the Trinity is involved in salvation, the Mother elects,
- 17:17the Son pays the price, the Spirit applies the work.
- 17:19If you lose the theology, you lose the gospel itself.
- 17:22But the article doesn't end on that grim note.
- 17:25It ends on a note of confidence. It does.
- 17:27It doesn't end in despair with the state of the world.
- 17:29It ends in confidence in the power of God.
- 17:32We point people to the Lamb of God.
- 17:34John 1.29 John the Baptist cry. Behold the Lamb of God who takes
- 17:39away the sin of the world. That's our message.
- 17:41Why can we be confident in just proclaiming that message?
- 17:44Because we know the Spirit works, we know that when we are
- 17:48faithful to point to Christ and preach His word, the Spirit of
- 17:52God does miraculous things. We can't do the miracle.
- 17:55But we know the one who can, and that takes all the pressure off
- 17:59of us to be the saviors. We are just the messengers.
- 18:02We're the Heralds. We're the witnesses.
- 18:04Precisely. So let's try to pull this all
- 18:07together. We have covered a lot of ground
- 18:10here. Walking through Masters argument
- 18:11we have. Yes, his argument is that the
- 18:13new birth isn't just a part of missions, it's the centerpiece.
- 18:17It defines the missionary, a child of God.
- 18:20He qualifies the leader, someone with proven character and
- 18:23genuine spiritual life. It necessitates the methods,
- 18:27prayer because we need the Spirit's power, and preaching
- 18:30because the Spirit uses the Word.
- 18:31And it fuels the going, the spontaneous gratitude of a saved
- 18:35soul. It's a complete integrated
- 18:38ecosystem. You cannot remove one part
- 18:40without breaking the whole thing.
- 18:42It really challenges the way we evaluate mission organizations,
- 18:44doesn't it? We tend to look at numbers,
- 18:46efficiency, budget, size, you know, metrics.
- 18:49But Master would ask a more fundamental question.
- 18:52Is the fuel there? Is the doctrine of the new birth
- 18:55central to everything they do? Because if it's not, the
- 18:59machinery might be running, but is it going anywhere of eternal
- 19:03significance? And that is the question I want
- 19:05to leave our listeners with today.
- 19:07It's a bit of a provocative thought, but it comes right out
- 19:09of this article. Based on everything we've
- 19:11discussed. The necessity of being born
- 19:13again, the danger of the Broad Rd.
- 19:16What happens to a mission organization or a church, or
- 19:19even an individual ministry that runs out of this fuel?
- 19:21But keeps the machinery running. Exactly.
- 19:24The budget is there, the staff is there, the flights are
- 19:26booked, the programs are running.
- 19:28But the central, desperate reliance on the supernatural new
- 19:32birth is gone. They might be building
- 19:34something. But are they building the
- 19:36Kingdom of God, or are they just building a really impressive
