- 0:40They'll take you the rest of the way right up until 5:00.
- 0:43Here's what's coming up on our program.
- 0:45In 20, 25 minutes. Bill Seals will join us.
- 0:48He covers Iowa State for cyclonereport.com.
- 0:51Bill Seals on Iowa State's convincing win over Arizona and
- 0:55the look ahead to the Cincinnati Game.
- 0:58Boy. The point spread and that one
- 0:59gone crazy, at least when the number first came out.
- 1:02But Bill Seals up first. Then Matt Rudy will recap the
- 1:05Ryder Cup. At least there was a little
- 1:07drama yesterday in the afternoon.
- 1:09Ludvrig Arburg will be the answer to a trivia question as
- 1:13to who is the only Euro to win the singles match yesterday.
- 1:16And boy, did it mean a lot to that outcome.
- 1:19But it goes the Euro's way. So we'll talk to Matt Rudy on
- 1:22that. Then Bama, Bob, Trent and I will
- 1:23go around college football before Scott Dockerman joins us.
- 1:26He was in the press box at Kinnock Stadium for Indiana and
- 1:30Iowa on Saturday afternoon. Mr. Monday night with a double
- 1:33dip and we will bring the curtain down on a Monday and
- 1:36pass the torch to the off the bench.
- 1:38Fellas, how are you? I'm doing well.
- 1:40I heard some concerning news with you that you might be out
- 1:43of Circa millions out of one for next season.
- 1:47You're already moving over to the other side.
- 1:49We got, of course, Circa Survivor and some carnage
- 1:51yesterday. And breaking news, as you were
- 1:53waiting earlier this morning, we found out that Iowa State will
- 1:56play Colorado at Colorado at 2:32. 30 They're not on top of
- 2:01each other. They're not.
- 2:02Yes. 6:00 Kickoff for Iowa against Wisconsin on the road.
- 2:076:00 Kickoff on FS1 for. Awesome, awesome, awesome,
- 2:11awesome. Good stuff.
- 2:12Hawks are off this week. They'll need it and now ski
- 2:14maybe we don't know we might find out tomorrow.
- 2:17The coordinators are going to to speak.
- 2:19So we shall see. Let's do Iowa State 1st and then
- 2:22Iowa because I got some obviously some thoughts on both
- 2:24with the with the clones putting it in the win column, maybe
- 2:27their most complete game of the year for for Iowa State.
- 2:31Maybe hard to I mean, I thought it was I don't know what more
- 2:35you could ask for some of the trickeration that they employed.
- 2:37Rocco Beck is Rocco Beck. My God, he's a good player.
- 2:40He truly is. They found their weapon and so
- 2:43well, who had not done so well until this past weekend.
- 2:46And now we know why you'd only been able to practice the first
- 2:49four days of fall camp. And my God, what a weapon he's
- 2:53become. We know about the tight ends.
- 2:55The defense was solid. I want to start with the way
- 2:58Matt Campbell hired handled Chase Smith.
- 3:01I thought it was brilliant. I really did.
- 3:03They score a touchdown. Don't send them out there right
- 3:06away. Take the pressure off of them.
- 3:08They get the two point conversion next time they score
- 3:11a touchdown. Well, if it wasn't good, you
- 3:13know, they're still 14 apiece because they have that eight
- 3:16spot. But Jay Smith split the sticks.
- 3:18Good for you. They're going to need them
- 3:19because it doesn't sound like Conrad, he's coming back anytime
- 3:22soon. But I thought Campbell, that was
- 3:24a stroke of brilliance on his part, the way that he handled
- 3:26that. I would stay played
- 3:27exceptionally well, I thought. Trent.
- 3:29Hey, you, I think said it at the top.
- 3:30That was a complete performance. He saw it in a multitude of
- 3:33different ways, really dominated upfront, which was important on
- 3:37the offensive line. I thought Pami put together
- 3:39their most complete effort upfront that they had throughout
- 3:42the course of the season. A tackling was very good.
- 3:44It was just it was that game that that's what you need to do
- 3:47right. That's the kind of performance
- 3:49that you're looking for. And they absolutely did that
- 3:51Stonewall that opening drive when looked like Arizona.
- 3:54Oh boy, here we here we go. And after that it was all
- 3:58cyclones after they were able to bend, but don't break on that
- 4:01opening. Dr. Defensively, you mentioned
- 4:03the two point conversion, that was eye opening.
- 4:05I had flipped away right as they scored the touchdown and then I
- 4:08see in the bottom line. 80 of course.
- 4:11And you go back and they see the formation that they ran out of
- 4:13that John Tez Williams interception was brilliant.
- 4:16I mean, he baited the quarterback for Feta.
- 4:19That was outstanding. Jameson Patton was all over the
- 4:21field, mentioned so well. He was just fantastic in the
- 4:25game. So it's hard to pick nits with
- 4:28this Iowa State Derby. I'm not sure what's Campbell
- 4:31going to be critical about today because all their big guns on
- 4:34defense showed up. I guess maybe the concern would
- 4:36be the injuries, right? Yeah, Orange is orange is a
- 4:39little bit banged. Up.
- 4:40And that's a big one. Yeah, it's a big one of of all
- 4:42of the little wounds or Nicks, if you want to call them that,
- 4:47that would be the main concern. But the place looked great.
- 4:51The white out came. I mean, it popped off the
- 4:53screen. It did.
- 4:54Jack Trice was in full throat and it was a good game because
- 4:58Arizona was a team that was kind of that plucky team, you know,
- 5:01don't let him hang around and Iowa State didn't.
- 5:03It took a big lead in the locker room at half time and came out
- 5:06and just built on that and it was never in doubt.
- 5:09My concern going into the game was that Arizona Defense, who
- 5:14had been playing at a much higher level and Iowa State made
- 5:17it look bad. You did paper.
- 5:18Yeah. I mean, just whatever they
- 5:20wanted to do, they were able to do it.
- 5:22You mentioned Seoul and we talked a little bit about him
- 5:24last week and just we heard after those first couple of
- 5:27games kind of what's going on. Yeah.
- 5:29And is this. A miss and I told you finally
- 5:31missed. And I told you last week, I
- 5:33didn't think there was because you saw they were starting to
- 5:36trend, get him out there a little bit more.
- 5:38And it's just it's so unlikely that Iowa State's going to miss
- 5:41out a guy like that. They haven't track record's been
- 5:43almost. Perfect it it has been and just
- 5:45year after year after year and then just suddenly well now we
- 5:48see he's healthy and now they got that big target helping with
- 5:51the tight ends and a quarterback that is just so reliable so
- 5:56solid so good makes the right decision with the football
- 5:59signally every single time you you don't get the stuff that you
- 6:02get got from Brock Purdy where it was just those inexplicable
- 6:06plays and what. Not.
- 6:07What God's neighbor there? Were a couple of those in his
- 6:10career of the bowl game and then the game was at the TCU.
- 6:13There was a TCU one in there. There was there was a handful of
- 6:16them and drinking. I mean, he got benched to get
- 6:18Drake. He.
- 6:18Did. You're not getting that out of
- 6:20this guy. He's consistent, yes.
- 6:23He just, he makes the plays that are in front of him.
- 6:26He's so smart, so heady and can make all the throws that you
- 6:29need at this level. He is excellent and this Iowa
- 6:32State team, this schedule they're.
- 6:34Five and O. And it doesn't look daunting.
- 6:36What scares you? Arizona State and Tus.
- 6:42There's TC. You blew that game.
- 6:43I agree with you. I agree with you, but I think
- 6:46TCU was good. I think TCU was good.
- 6:48They're talented. I mean not scares you, I guess.
- 6:52I mean you. OK, I'll go.
- 6:54I'll go there. 9:00 and 3:10 and 2:00 we shine for.
- 6:57I did 3 Who are who are they losing?
- 7:00How are they losing? 3 gates let me get the schedule
- 7:03for three found three losses pipe down over there.
- 7:06But Kansas? Kansas is tricky at TCU is.
- 7:10Tricky just got beat by Cincinnati.
- 7:11Cincinnati's good Kansas. Cincinnati should be in Nebraska
- 7:15in week. Was there a week one week one
- 7:17Thursday night, this game, this Cincinnati games.
- 7:21A tricky spot, I'll give you that.
- 7:23I think they beat Colorado. Yes, BYU.
- 7:26At home they. They they should.
- 7:28That kind of has the feel of Arizona coming to town.
- 7:31Arizona State, they're still I. Don't have anybody else outside
- 7:35to Tyson to throw the ball to. They can't run the ball.
- 7:39Scataboo was so important for what they are.
- 7:42They kill the Sun Devils. Give me how a state -10.
- 7:46At TCU that's tough that's tough.
- 7:48Kansas is Kansas. Cincinnati got him.
- 7:51I watched the whole game. That's why that's why I was the
- 7:53free on the opening opening window yesterday before I got in
- 7:56the shower and headed to Altoona.
- 7:58But you know what I was glad because there's a the Caesar
- 8:00sports book had everything except the Iowa game, but that's
- 8:03OK. I watched it on my phone and
- 8:04then watched the the what do they call it on BTN?
- 8:08Whatever the the BTN in an hour, football in an hour, whatever
- 8:11the hell it's called. So let's get into that game.
- 8:13I, I have two the in hockey, there's the three stars.
- 8:17I, I came up with two in in the Iowa, Indiana game.
- 8:20The first star of the game was Kinnock Stadium.
- 8:23It was it was it. Almost did it again.
- 8:24Yeah, it almost did it again. And the second star, and it
- 8:27wasn't too far behind. The first star was Phil Parker.
- 8:29Yeah. My good God.
- 8:32They went man more than and blitz more than you can ever
- 8:35remember in the course of the game.
- 8:36He is such a good defensive coordinator, He truly is.
- 8:41This team doesn't tackle well. No, and that's, and I want and I
- 8:44if he, if Enteringer would tackle well.
- 8:47I thought that was his best game as a Hawk.
- 8:48Yeah, I thought Latmer played very well as well.
- 8:50I thought they both did particularly Enteringer, but
- 8:53there's a couple of missed tackles in there that you you
- 8:56just can't elevate them to that spot.
- 8:58But yeah, look, Kennick Stadium almost did it again, Trent, they
- 9:03all, I almost found a way to do what they do seemingly every
- 9:08year. That Indiana team's better than
- 9:09Iowa. Let's start right there.
- 9:11They're better than Iowa and both sides.
- 9:13I think they're a better football team.
- 9:15And yet it was the recipe it. Was there for the taking.
- 9:19And all it takes is a screen pass completion that I who wins
- 9:25that football game? I had a walk off chip shot and
- 9:27they that's. That's what it was.
- 9:29You're 100% right. Pull off the victory, 1613.
- 9:33That's all it takes. And to hold that Indiana team,
- 9:35which would have been 13 points, is unthinkable after what we've
- 9:38seen out of them and what they do week after week after week.
- 9:40They did it and it was the recipe and Phil Parker was a
- 9:43wizard and it was all right there and then.
- 9:45Guys didn't make plays. Yep, and OK, the least laces
- 9:48were to the side. Got to make that book.
- 9:49Yeah. No, you're right.
- 9:50You're 100%. Come on, Drew Stevens.
- 9:52Yeah, You're a senior. We went through this stuff
- 9:54again. Whatever's happening upstairs,
- 9:57Yanks another one. Just like he yanked one against
- 9:59Rutgers the week before. Did it?
- 10:00Did it? Did it pop into your head as he
- 10:02was lining up for the kick there?
- 10:03Oh boy. Yeah.
- 10:04See, it didn't to me. I just, I guess I going back to
- 10:07last year. And and maybe it was just the
- 10:09frustration of the game would have been basically salted away
- 10:11if you just make a completion on a screen pass with Hank Brown in
- 10:14the game. Yeah.
- 10:15And then Brown in the game. Now we go to that part of the
- 10:18conversation. So what, what, what, what do we
- 10:20know? The announcer said.
- 10:21It was an ankle. He came up with a knee brace
- 10:23which is funny if he has bad ankle.
- 10:24Yes, it isn't it. Isn't he Yes.
- 10:27Then he gets on the bike and then essentially that was the
- 10:29last we heard Hank Brown went the went the rest of the way.
- 10:32There is some speculation that they dodged a bullet, that it
- 10:36might not be as bad as first as as and some has feared.
- 10:40I don't know if that means he's back for Wisconsin.
- 10:42I don't know if that means he's going to miss a couple of games.
- 10:45I don't think we're going to find out from the coordinators
- 10:47tomorrow. Oh, I wouldn't think so either.
- 10:49No. I mean, we'll get probably we'll
- 10:51see not season ending the things that have been out there.
- 10:55Chad Leisenko had a report not feared to be a season ender.
- 10:59But does that be easy back for Wisconsin now?
- 11:01The bye week comes at a great time and and to figure out that
- 11:04part of it, but that Wisconsin game's a must win for this team
- 11:07to be bubble eligible, to be both eligible, this team has to
- 11:12beat Wisconsin on the road. It's very doable.
- 11:14Sure, it's got some stinks, they're awful, but it's still a
- 11:16road game and going to be a night game on top of it.
- 11:20That'll be a charged up and well lubricated Badger fan base for
- 11:23that one. Does the student section show up
- 11:26for that one? Because.
- 11:26They're no, that's not. Into.
- 11:28It that student section stinks, honestly.
- 11:30Well, when they're good, they're right.
- 11:33They are front runners and that has been the case ever since
- 11:36they got good. When it started to build under
- 11:38Berry in the early and mid 2000 or 90s it it was really good.
- 11:41Now that's not the case anymore. Now at this point front running
- 11:45and with everything that's happening inside that program,
- 11:48if they get pulverized by Michigan, I mean it's normal
- 11:51student section at Camp Randall unless it's like a top 10
- 11:54showdown doesn't fill up till the 2nd corner.
- 11:57This one, it's not African. Yeah, I don't think it is
- 11:59either. I thought I was running backs
- 12:01ran violently hard. That was my take away from
- 12:04especially Moulton. I mean, he ran his you know what
- 12:07off Sam Phillips looks as though his lights going on.
- 12:11Howard had a really nice catch on the sidelines.
- 12:13He's getting better again. Defensively, I thought entering
- 12:16it was really good, except for a couple of missed tackles.
- 12:18Deshawn Lee was OK in the football.
- 12:21Gave up the late 1. Gave up the late one.
- 12:23Yeah, true. But and, and for the people that
- 12:25are criticizing the play call, they're going all out blitz.
- 12:27That's what they did all game. That's how they stayed in the
- 12:30game. Go what's the old headline dance
- 12:33with the girl that brought you the blitz package was what
- 12:36brought them to that point to tackle and there was no help
- 12:40behind him, but that's what they did.
- 12:42There was a lot in that game, a lot of what ifs and a lot of
- 12:45frustration of what it could have been.
- 12:47Let's start with Granowski. If he doesn't get hurt, I won't
- 12:48win that game. If lot more cuts back, gets to
- 12:51the end zone maybe I think I would get that game even as much
- 12:53time as still would have been left on the clock.
- 12:55If you complete a screen pass, you win that game.
- 12:58That's the big one to me is the screen pass that that was the
- 13:01big. One editor Stevens makes the
- 13:02field goal. This very well could be a
- 13:04different that that pressure and that charged up atmosphere up by
- 13:09three with two minutes left. I think we're also having a
- 13:11different I. Think we probably are as well.
- 13:13I I was surprised when those who ran into the end zone at the end
- 13:16of the game. Yeah, that was weird.
- 13:17We. Just run our bounds, right?
- 13:18Get to the five and run our bounds.
- 13:20You get to the end zone. I mean, that's the only way you
- 13:21can lose. The ball hits the deck somehow.
- 13:23And if you took the opener, had it early in the week at 6 1/2,
- 13:27and I know there were a few people that had that, I think it
- 13:31also impacted the second-half of spread.
- 13:33I saw something like that. There is, yeah, something
- 13:35speaking. And late in the first half,
- 13:37you're you're up 10, seven, all the momentum in the world.
- 13:41Missed tackle. Yeah.
- 13:42Wrapped up. He squeezes out.
- 13:45Merryweather gets called for a ticky tack.
- 13:46Personal foul. I can't touch him.
- 13:48Nope. So be it, you throw your hands
- 13:50up and they get a field goal to tie at 10:10.
- 13:52It just it, it felt deflating even at that moment before the
- 13:55second-half happened and then things were charged up again.
- 13:57But so many times where and you gifted him 10 points, you give
- 14:00him 7, nothing lead right off the bat off a tip ball, no
- 14:03defense on those two plays. And then after that, it was all
- 14:07Iowa defense. It was there.
- 14:09It was A7. Nothing.
- 14:11I thought, Oh my God, look out below.
- 14:13Yeah, this is going to be brutal.
- 14:14We'll see where it goes. But yeah, good stuff.
- 14:18Well, not good stuff for Iowa. Again, I, I, I feel if you were
- 14:24in the, if you were in the building, hats off.
- 14:26You did your best to lift that team.
- 14:28Iowa State, just Rocco Beck, it just continues to amaze me.
- 14:32He truly does. He's, he's way better than I
- 14:35ever thought he was going to be. I, I thought there, there has to
- 14:37be a let down, right? You got Brock Purdy's leading
- 14:39teams to Super Bowls. There's got to be a let down.
- 14:42But Purdy is, I mean, but Beck is just, he's a football player,
- 14:45comes from a football family. You can tell he's just smart
- 14:48between the years. So damn smart.
- 14:51Steve is up. Steve, welcome to the program.
- 14:52How are you? Good.
- 14:54How are you guys? What's up?
- 14:56Hey, just on the Hawkeye offense, first of all, I'm it's
- 15:00night and day compared to when the previous coordinator was
- 15:03there, so I don't want to be too harsh on Tim Lester.
- 15:07However, Iowa State Game Flow Mesh ran it to.
- 15:12Death, but it worked. Rutgers game quarterback running
- 15:17plays called from the huddle worked great.
- 15:21This game. We didn't do either of those.
- 15:25So what just basically, we go into a game, we watch film, and
- 15:30no matter what worked the week before, we have a game plan that
- 15:33is catered to what they're doing.
- 15:37Or you didn't want or you thought maybe that that's what
- 15:40they would be expecting. I don't know what was in his
- 15:42mind, but you're you're right. They they didn't do that, and
- 15:46maybe they should have. That was the part of separately
- 15:49in the beginning of the game kind of wondering and they
- 15:51talked about a lot on the broadcast.
- 15:52Phil Simms mentioned it a few different times for.
- 15:55Him, by the way. He's all right.
- 15:56I thought so too and he got, he got criticized a lot apparently.
- 16:00Thanks for the call, Steve. I appreciate it.
- 16:02Do you have anything else, Steve?
- 16:03No. OK, appreciate the call.
- 16:05So I guess he started, Well, I know he did because I was
- 16:08listening. At the end of the first quarter,
- 16:10he started to talk over the wave.
- 16:12Oh, OK. And then not long, he realizes,
- 16:16well, what's this all about is I think I'm paraphrasing.
- 16:18And then he realized maybe no one alerted him that, you know,
- 16:20what's about to happen, which surprises the hell out of me
- 16:23that they didn't. But I thought it was.
- 16:24I thought it was good. Yeah.
- 16:26Yeah, he was completely fine. I I didn't see any major
- 16:29concerns on that front. He was fine.
- 16:33I I enjoyed him and Burmeister both talking about the
- 16:35quarterbacks. I didn't listen to a ton of it.
- 16:38Softball. OK.
- 16:39Yeah, so I'm in charge of the streaming of the games, so I got
- 16:43the camera set up, so I got the hot spot on my phone.
- 16:47If you stream these. Games.
- 16:48Oh yeah, yeah. Got to have all, you know,
- 16:50Grandpa, grandma's got to be able to see it too if they can't
- 16:52make it to the game. So we live in.
- 16:53So we're doing that and got that going.
- 16:55And then Peacock is not agreeing with me out of the ballparks and
- 16:59we are having some fights. So finally, yeah, I was just
- 17:01watching and not listening so I didn't get a ton.
- 17:03And then when I rewatched it last night, it was Fast forward
- 17:0630 seconds, Fast forward 30 seconds.
- 17:08So did not get a ton of the commentator, so I shouldn't say.
- 17:11But the little bit that I did hear on Phil Simms, I I thought
- 17:13it was fine. But yeah, I didn't hear that
- 17:15part of it. And that would definitely be a
- 17:16miss our. Colleague Heather Burnside does
- 17:18not agree with our. Oh, she doesn't like Phil Simms.
- 17:21She did not like Phil Simms, but she said to be fair, she didn't
- 17:24like him when he's in the NFL either.
- 17:26So yeah, but but it was it was a mixed bag.
- 17:29There was a there was a lot of criticism out there of Sims.
- 17:33I thought it was OK, not great, but but but certainly OK.
- 17:35But Burmeister was was terrific and Peacock did a nice job for
- 17:39the most part, I thought. Still too many commercials?
- 17:41First stream a game. Do we need that many
- 17:42commercials? Speaking of commercials, how
- 17:44much Ryder Cup did you see? I did not watch a shot.
- 17:47Yesterday. Did you see much on Saturday?
- 17:50No, I thought it was over the top.
- 17:52I mean, anytime you're chucking beer at the player's wife.
- 17:54Yeah, yeah, that's, that's that's too far.
- 17:58The public redress announcer on the first team, remember the guy
- 18:02the British opening became famous for that, who would start
- 18:05at 6:00 in the morning and. And wouldn't leave his post
- 18:08until the final group. Rory Baccaro.
- 18:09Yeah. And he wouldn't take a piss.
- 18:11He just, he was just there the whole time.
- 18:12And then finally he'd he'd head, he'd head to the bathroom.
- 18:16So on Saturday morning, the public redress person, I think
- 18:22it was a woman, she was leading. You ready for this?
- 18:27Oh yes, I I did see 2. Initials.
- 18:29I'm not going to say them because I don't want to cross
- 18:30the line. You can probably guess.
- 18:33One starts with S, so you can I'll leave it to you the F The
- 18:36other I'll just leave to your imagination.
- 18:38F Blank, Rory and in Unison. Yeah, the PA announcer.
- 18:45The PA. Announcer The.
- 18:47Course starter, right the the starter is leading that chant
- 18:52now. She didn't get a chance to.
- 18:53She was fired in in advance of Sunday.
- 18:55But I thought it was way over the top.
- 18:57I did. I mean, that's not golf.
- 18:59And we almost saw a great. Comeback, comeback.
- 19:02You did well. You did see a comeback.
- 19:04I was watching football. I was flipping around.
- 19:06You know what one more thing before we go to break.
- 19:09AI had a terrible weekend because Green Bay Tide did not
- 19:11matter Survivor. But I think the worst part, the
- 19:14worst part of my weekend, and this is not even close.
- 19:20Just when I thought they were dead.
- 19:23OK, at the city. Just when I thought it was over.
- 19:28It's not. How do they do this to me?
- 19:32Well, they got healthy after year after year.
- 19:36And how do we go through the same conversations Spring and?
- 19:39Summer because they can't keep winning.
- 19:41Why? Is is 15 retiring?
- 19:44I don't care if he's not or if he is or he's not.
- 19:47They can't keep winning. Tom Brady kept winning.
- 19:52Not to this level, did he? Yeah.
- 19:54They won a bunch. Yeah.
- 19:55I missed the Pat. The Patriots domination.
- 19:59This drives me bonkers. And they're going to get better
- 20:03because Rice is coming back. The Ravens defense stinks.
- 20:06The Bills defense stinks. Awful.
- 20:08These are this. Is the most complete team in
- 20:10football and. That's coming from Ken Bronco
- 20:15fan. I I was so pissed off that I
- 20:18switched and watched your bears. Did you?
- 20:20Yes. I couldn't believe how good
- 20:23Kansas City looked when everybody that hates them had
- 20:27their shovels full of dirt and was This is finally it.
- 20:30Ding Dong, the witch is dead. Nope.
- 20:34Wait till they get Rice back with Worthy.
- 20:37My God the defense. The offensive line was terrific.
- 20:42And he got knocked out of great and he got knocked out of
- 20:44Survivor because of a tie. Because of a tie.
- 20:47But that's the rules. Yeah, it is.
- 20:49That's the rules. You didn't.
- 20:50We didn't survive. Freaking chiefs.
- 20:53Take a time out. Come back Bill Seals on Iowa
- 20:57State look forward to hearing from him what he thought any
- 20:59updates on injuries in particular Dominic Orange the
- 21:02big citrus that's coming up next.
- 21:05Matt Rudy on the Gulf. Miller and Condon here till two

- 21:43He covers Iowa State cyclonereport.com Bill Trenton
- 21:46can thank you for coming on here today.
- 21:48As always, great to speak with you.
- 21:50I thought it was Iowa State's maybe most complete game of
- 21:54their five and O start coming out of the coming out of the
- 21:57buy. Arizona also had a buy really
- 22:00impressed the way Iowa State took care of business.
- 22:03I thought maybe that was their best game of the year.
- 22:05Bill, how about that? Yeah, I would, I would agree
- 22:07with you, Kenny. I think that they they came out
- 22:10and and they got off to the good start that they needed to.
- 22:13And I think that that really set the tone for the game.
- 22:16You know, they, they come in and and get the the touchdown, the
- 22:21two point conversion. And I thought that that really
- 22:23kind of set the tone again and, and they they kind of dominated
- 22:27from there. I thought they they did a great
- 22:30job against against Fafeta, the Arizona quarterback, you know,
- 22:35they had just a week before really struggled against Jalen
- 22:39Rayner and then just ran all over him, it seemed like.
- 22:42But I think that they were on their keys from this very start
- 22:46against the Arizona QB did a good job there.
- 22:49You know, they held their throne, I guess, running the
- 22:52ball. It wasn't an area that they were
- 22:54dominant in. But you know, again, I thought
- 22:56Rocco gosh, 14 to 20 passing in that game.
- 23:00He saw his touchdown streak and he scores 3 rushing touchdowns.
- 23:05Maybe one of those will count. But then Carson Hansen really
- 23:08got him going as well, his first two touchdowns of the game of
- 23:12the season in that game. What do bring up Jameson Patton
- 23:16to you and begin his career? Roosevelt finished up at Ankeny.
- 23:19Guy, Local guy at a pub, and now this is a guy that had a lot of
- 23:23opportunities, want to stay close to home, makes his way up
- 23:25to aims. And though he played a little
- 23:27bit, he was kind of part of that substitution pattern at safety.
- 23:30Had a couple of interceptions early in his career.
- 23:33Feels like he's taken that next step that he's gone from a fine
- 23:36player. He's turned into a really good
- 23:38player and Neil's going to get the headlines as he should
- 23:40because he's a stud. But boy, Jameson Patton has
- 23:42really grown into a really, really good safety.
- 23:45Yeah, he he really has. And gosh, what what good timing
- 23:49for him to have his breakout season when they, you know,
- 23:52turnover 3 starters at the at the safety position.
- 23:55And Patton's one of them. And along with Marcus Neal,
- 23:58those two have been just revelations like in this
- 24:01defense, you know, in addition to Dominic Orange, probably the
- 24:05three best players on the defensive side of the ball from
- 24:09the start of the season. So, yeah, I mean, Patton had
- 24:11another pick in the game against Arizona and, and yeah, really
- 24:15coming into his own. And I I think he he's talked a
- 24:17lot to to to the media about him playing quarterback in high
- 24:22school and, and just kind of the understanding that it gave him
- 24:25of that side of the ball of of the quarterbacks maybe mindset
- 24:30thinking and playing safety like that where he's stationed.
- 24:35I mean, that's that that's a pretty big, you know, to know
- 24:38that position inside and out. I think it has been crucial for
- 24:42him and and his. You mentioned orange, any
- 24:45updates? Are you going to have to wait
- 24:47until tomorrow? Will Campbell have a further
- 24:49update tomorrow? Is there any fear that it might
- 24:51be? This might keep him out for
- 24:54Saturday against Cincinnati. What are you hearing there, if
- 24:56anything, Bill? Well, after the, well the post
- 24:59game press conference afterwards, we weren't led to
- 25:02believe it was going to be anything that's going to keep
- 25:04him out. We might get a little more out
- 25:07of Campbell tomorrow and then we'll be back into that mode of
- 25:10getting the availability reports starting on Wednesday.
- 25:13So it might be Wednesday when we get those first availability
- 25:19reports that we we get a sense on on his status moving into
- 25:24Saturday. Running game was a little bit
- 25:26better. I, I think throughout the course
- 25:28of the year, I think it's unlikely we're going to see them
- 25:31be able to be elite at that level.
- 25:32Offensive line. It's not at that level, but we
- 25:35know they can protect certainly, but get the run game going and
- 25:37seeing a whole bunch of Carson Hanson.
- 25:39Is it Hanson being a little bit more healthy, just being more
- 25:42comfortable because we only saw 2 running backs in this game,
- 25:45Hanson and Sama. Do you anticipate this is what
- 25:48if, if both those guys are healthy, that it's going to be
- 25:51Hanson about 2/3 of the snaps, Sama about 1/3.
- 25:54Is that kind of a a fairway to look at this in the running game
- 25:57going forward? Yeah, you're probably right.
- 26:00I I think it's probably 2 every, every three carries.
- 26:03Hanson's going to get two of them.
- 26:05That seemed to be that. Well, that's how it played out.
- 26:08And Hanson got 19 against the the Wildcats and I believe it
- 26:12was 12 for Sama in that game. So similar split.
- 26:16And as far as like who the, the, the dominant running back is,
- 26:21I'm not sure I've got that from game to game.
- 26:24I should say I'm not sure where I've got that one figured out
- 26:26yet. It seems like once we think it's
- 26:29it's handsome that's maybe seizing a little bit of control,
- 26:32then Abu will come out and have maybe his best game that that
- 26:35he's played. So I think it's a healthy
- 26:38rotation right now. Dylan Lee, he got a few carries
- 26:42in that game on Saturday as well.
- 26:44So I think they like what they have right now out of that
- 26:48triumvirate there at at running back and Hanson also, he's doing
- 26:52a nice job catching the ball. And but I, I think 1 saying as
- 26:56I, as I go through these PFF grades each week, I think the
- 27:00one thing maybe separating Hanson and Sama right now is
- 27:03just that on passing downs, they've got to have Hanson in
- 27:07the game because he's the better pass blocker right now.
- 27:11So I think when Sama's in the game, the opponents probably
- 27:15know what's coming their way. It's going to be a run.
- 27:17And and with Hanson, it maybe makes them question that a
- 27:21little bit more just because Hanson can pass block so well
- 27:24and also done pretty well catching the ball out of the
- 27:27backfield. Bill Seals cycling reporters,
- 27:29our guest Bill said at the beginning of the show.
- 27:31I was really impressed the way Matt Campbell handled Chase
- 27:33Smith, the the kicker, the third string kicker who's been forced
- 27:37into duty with two injuries. I love the fact that they went
- 27:40for too early. They were able to get it.
- 27:42So the next time they score a touchdown that takes the
- 27:44pressure off, it's it's would be too, you know, normal 14, seven
- 27:48points would be 14 if he had missed.
- 27:51But he didn't and he didn't miss the entire day.
- 27:53I thought that that might have been a good confidence builder
- 27:57to let him wait a little bit and not send him out there after the
- 28:00first touchdown to try and, you know, split the sticks.
- 28:02I thought Campbell did a nice job there.
- 28:05Yeah, yeah. And, and when things work out
- 28:07the way they plan them and it, it always looks like that
- 28:10they're all genius. That's right.
- 28:12And then, you know, it certainly did the the two point conversion
- 28:15got them, got them rolling. And I, I think also, gosh, the
- 28:18defensively that really had a huge thing too with the just the
- 28:22tempo, the momentum of the game there.
- 28:24But yeah, they get they get Smith out of there early on the
- 28:27two point conversion with 43 seconds left to go in the
- 28:31fourth. He kicks the 34 yard field goal
- 28:34at 1:00. Yep, looked pretty good.
- 28:36So, yeah, I mean, all all things positive, I think for Chase
- 28:40Smith coming out of that game and they're going to need him
- 28:43here over the next few weeks. What are you on the road?
- 28:46What are you hearing on Conradi anything?
- 28:47Is there any timeline? Any speculation?
- 28:51I think it's weeks right now with where he's concerned.
- 28:54It sounds like with Jace Gilbert though it might be season we're
- 28:57talking about, but he hoped to get Gilbert back by the end of
- 29:00the year. We'll see how that plays out.
- 29:02But yeah, I I think maybe with Conrady, this is just me
- 29:06guessing right now is maybe coming out of that second by
- 29:09week could be a good target game for him when they they return
- 29:14home for those two games late 1st would be later in October.
- 29:20Let's jump over to story of the game for me.
- 29:23And that was so well what we saw from him.
- 29:25Another chase, a different chase and the big play that he had
- 29:29early in the game, just short of the goal line would have got him
- 29:32into the end zone on that one. But that deep threat, we know
- 29:35what they can do in the passing game.
- 29:37We know they got the underneath guys and obviously what they
- 29:39have at the tight end position, getting a playmaker like this,
- 29:42that outside big speed guy that they've had year after year
- 29:45after year and under Campbell, getting him out there.
- 29:47Is this what you anticipate now going forward?
- 29:51Yeah, I would think so. And then Xavier Townsend, he had
- 29:55the he had the one almost fumble, I think between yeah,
- 29:59those two, the big ones moving forward with him and those two,
- 30:03Brett Eskelsen, yeah. So well, looked really good in
- 30:07that game. And he had the one, the first
- 30:09one, he almost looked like he was going to break for a
- 30:11touchdown and then had the one down to the one yard line.
- 30:15But one of the one of the subscribers on my board, you
- 30:18know, he's got a lot of drawn a lot of comparisons so well has
- 30:22to Jayden Higgins. But one that the guy on my site
- 30:26compared him to was Quentin Bundridge.
- 30:28I'm not that's going very, very similar players.
- 30:33You know, now that I think about it with what Bundridge brought a
- 30:37lot of similarities there as well.
- 30:38But yeah, he's going to be a key factor moving forward.
- 30:42He's he gets open a lot. That's the other thing.
- 30:45And and believe it or not, he had played going even going into
- 30:48Saturday. It played the second most snaps
- 30:51of any wide receiver on our Iowa State's roster.
- 30:54So he had already been on the field a lot, but now I think
- 30:57he's really that in the end of the system now and and Rocco's
- 31:02got a lot of confidence in him and I think that's just going to
- 31:05keep growing in in future week. We got like 30 seconds left,
- 31:08Bill back to the defense, thought the linebackers are
- 31:10terrific. No, no surprise.
- 31:12Getting Willick back was great. Ebel played well.
- 31:15Caleb Bacon was all over the field.
- 31:16He might have been the best player on defense and that's
- 31:19saying a lot because I love the way John Tez William baited
- 31:22Fafita into that pic. I thought Trey Bell was Trey
- 31:24Bell lot. A lot of positives with
- 31:27Haycock's defense again. Yeah, no doubt.
- 31:30And that they they did a good job against an Arizona offense
- 31:34that had really been, they've been putting up some points and
- 31:36grinding out a lot of yards against some good opponents.
- 31:39So yeah, a big factor there. And I think they did a good job
- 31:42against the quarterback run in that game.
- 31:44And then the two picks, those were very timely picks to both
- 31:48in Iowa State territory when those were made.
- 31:51So kept some points off the board for the Wildcats in that
- 31:55one and gave the ball right back to the offense.
- 31:57Bill Seals cyclonereport.com. cyclonereport.com, part of the
- 32:01Rivals network. Bill, great stuff.
- 32:03We'll watch for the update on the press conferences tomorrow,
- 32:06and we will talk with you next week.
- 32:08Thank you, Bill, Good to talk to you.
- 32:11Phone cut out right the right time.
- 32:13If there is a right time for a phone to cut out, we'll take a
- 32:15time out. Matt Rudy will recap the Ryder
- 32:17Cup. It goes to the EUR got tight
- 32:19yesterday Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 32:25I'm Hillary Condon. Welcome back Iowa Sports Radio
- 32:27Network Trent Condon Ken Miller coming up in our number 2 Bama.
- 32:31Bob Trent and I recap the week at college football.
- 32:33Scott Dockerman from the athletic he was Kennick stain in
- 32:36the press box will get his thoughts on Indiana and Iowa.
- 32:39Matt Rudy joins us for all the big golf events that we had one.
- 32:43And you know what? I wasn't sure was going to be,
- 32:45well, calling this a big event. But boy, yesterday turned out
- 32:48fascinating. Is down the stretch they come
- 32:50and there was a chance, maybe a miraculous comeback.
- 32:54But Ludwig Oberg is the only Euro to win this match
- 32:57yesterday, which is remarkable that they won one match and yet
- 33:01won the Ryder Cup on Sunday. That was fascinating.
- 33:04Matt Rudy, how are you? I'm good and like you, I was
- 33:08ready to to tap out on this FPL 2 days and it was pretty boring.
- 33:13And then to have it come down to the end like it did.
- 33:17I think we talked about this in major championship season all
- 33:20the time. Majors are hard to win, Ryder
- 33:22Cups are hard to win. You know, there's a lot of
- 33:24pressure and you see players doing a lot of things that they
- 33:27don't normally do because they're, you know, it's really
- 33:30stressful. And to me, that's, that's what
- 33:35makes it fun to watch. It's to see how players deal
- 33:38with high stress situations and we saw the good and the bad.
- 33:43We saw the fans getting on people.
- 33:44We saw, you know, we saw people leaving 8 foot Bernie puts short
- 33:48that they needed to have. And you know, the second
- 33:53guessing is off the charts because I mean, the event is so,
- 33:58you know, there's so few people on the course at a given time
- 34:01and the stakes are so high for any individual match that it's
- 34:04just an ocean of second guessing even.
- 34:07I mean, the minute the ball rolls by the hole, everyone's
- 34:09saying, well, they should have done this, you should have done
- 34:11this. And I think it's the the
- 34:15intensity level might have been cranked up about two notches too
- 34:18high. I am glad.
- 34:20I'm glad that there was some drama on Sunday.
- 34:22The, there was a theory that I heard on Friday that I, I, I
- 34:26liked, I, it kind of clicked with my mind is not using those
- 34:30rookies early in the opening. You know, when things got
- 34:33started, Tee in the ground Friday morning, because those
- 34:35guys all of a sudden went out there for America and they're
- 34:38down 31. And and the amount of pressure
- 34:40that you have in that kind of moment already before you get it
- 34:43going, Do you think it makes sense?
- 34:45And is that something that you question King and Bradley?
- 34:48Was there something maybe more important that you saw If we're
- 34:51coming up with questions? I thought that was a good one
- 34:52and a good theory. Get those young guys out there
- 34:55early, kind of get their feet on the ground and and go in that
- 34:57pressure, not knowing what it's obviously going to look like.
- 35:00You don't want to dig yourself a hole, but if you do, those
- 35:02rookies are in some deep trouble.
- 35:05Yeah, I also think that if you do the lead in to the tournament
- 35:10the right way, nobody really feels like a rookie.
- 35:12I mean, if everybody's, you know, like, like the I'll just,
- 35:16I mean, I guess we're all going to jump up and down on the
- 35:18Americans. But the Europeans, they came to
- 35:20New York 10 days before so they could be acclimated in the time
- 35:24zone. They played all the great
- 35:25courses out on Long Island together.
- 35:27I'm sure they all played in the configurations that they were
- 35:30going to play in when they got to that page.
- 35:32So by the time you actually get to Thursday, Friday, Saturday,
- 35:35Sunday, this isn't some big, I mean, yes, it's a new experience
- 35:39for the rookies, but it's not as big and new as it would have
- 35:41been because everybody's so comfortable from doing it
- 35:44before. And then the one thing I that
- 35:48strikes me about this, and I've covered a whole bunch of Ryder
- 35:51Cups because we've really gotten to the point where I know I, I
- 35:54believe that a lot of players look at it and they say, well,
- 35:56you know, yeah, I've got to do it because it's the Ryder Cup.
- 35:59But there's no joy in in doing it for a lot of those players.
- 36:02It looks like an assignment for a lot of the American players,
- 36:06whereas the Europeans, they they can't wait to go do it.
- 36:09And I think the way the PGA of America, for example, announces
- 36:13the prize money or the players are getting paid on the Monday
- 36:17of the event. So that's something everybody
- 36:19gets asked about. To me, all that stuff is just
- 36:22adds distractions and headaches to an event that is really a no
- 36:27win for the American players. If you beat the Europeans brains
- 36:31in and while you're supposed to because it's the deeper tour.
- 36:33And then if you lose, you know, I mean, look at look at the
- 36:37narrative from this week. Are we going to call this a
- 36:39failure? Are we going to call this a, you
- 36:41know, heroic try? And it's there's so much
- 36:45invested in this now and it just seems like it's becoming a drag
- 36:49for the players because because of all of the outside chatter
- 36:53around it. Yeah, no doubt.
- 36:54I mean, Luke, Donald you mentioned brought them here
- 36:56early. They changed the bedding.
- 36:58They went as far as to change the shampoo in the showers.
- 37:01I mean, this guy left no stone unturned, you know, to your
- 37:04point about, but it seems like the Americans, it's something
- 37:07they have to do in the EUR, how much it means Shane Lowry won
- 37:11the Open Championship and I think it was his home course,
- 37:14right? Certainly his home country.
- 37:16And he said the biggest event in his life was the Ryder Cup
- 37:20yesterday when he sunk that putt, that nothing in the game
- 37:23of golf that he's done is bigger than this.
- 37:26It just goes to show you that the EUR seemingly take this more
- 37:30serious. It means more to them.
- 37:33Yeah. And I think that because golf is
- 37:35such an individual sport in general, part of what makes the
- 37:38rhetoric of fun is to see this team component come in that we
- 37:42don't always see a lot of. And I mean, I don't want to
- 37:46single out the current players because for sure, Tiger Woods
- 37:50and Phil Mickelson, for example, did not really fully invest in
- 37:54the whole Ryder Cup experience for a good 15 years.
- 37:57I mean, you're talking about two inner circle first ballot Hall
- 38:00of Fame players that have losing records in the Ryder Cup, which
- 38:03which you know, is if you think about that now we're now you
- 38:06start to talk about Scotty Scheffler in that same vein, and
- 38:10we're going to talk about 3 inner circle Hall of Fame
- 38:14American players who have a less than 500 record at the Ryder
- 38:17Cup. And that's a testament, I think,
- 38:19to the way the American pairings get made A&B to just how much
- 38:24bigger than the stats the European players play to.
- 38:28I mean, Tommy Fleetwood, this is not a great example this year
- 38:31because you know, he won the FedEx Cup.
- 38:32But you know, this is a guy who over the last two Ryder Cups has
- 38:35certainly outplayed his world ranking.
- 38:38And, and when you see that, you know, Shane Lowry, nice career,
- 38:42you know, good player, definitely not one of the 10
- 38:45best players in the world, but you know, he played against the
- 38:48guy. I mean, I think Russell Henley
- 38:50made 8 birdies. He played a guy who made 8
- 38:52birdies with a fantastic shot of the bunker on the last hole to
- 38:56set up, you know, a key win for the Americans.
- 38:59And he calmly steps up and hits his shot inside and, you know,
- 39:03makes a birdie that the team needs.
- 39:05And, and I think the American, Scotty, Scotty Scheffler has
- 39:08proven he can certainly do that on his own ball.
- 39:11I mean, he, they hurt him and he did it for his country.
- 39:14You know, he shot 62 at the Olympics.
- 39:16I mean, that's a pretty great performance.
- 39:17But there's just something flatter about this event, not
- 39:21that they can't do it, but that, you know, if it doesn't work.
- 39:23And I think they kind of just go, well, OK, I mean, I guess
- 39:26we'll do this again in two years.
- 39:27So just 30 seconds on this, the timing, September, Ken and I
- 39:32talked about it last week. Is there anything that can be
- 39:34done? It's just it's football, you've
- 39:35heard it before. Anything at all, any possible
- 39:38move of this to put it at a different time, to make it
- 39:40palpable for the casual sports fan.
- 39:43I think they should keep it at the same time, but just do it in
- 39:45the middle of the week. I mean, these weeks.
- 39:48So, you know, if my kids are huge football, you know, they
- 39:51watch college football and Pro Football and they're they're
- 39:54beside themselves when we get to Tuesday and Wednesday when
- 39:56there's no football on. I mean that that would be the
- 39:59time to do it during this time of year when you're not butting
- 40:02up against all these other events.
- 40:04But, you know, I think the bigger thing that needs to
- 40:06happen is if we keep having these weird blowouts and sort of
- 40:10disinterested showings, when are we going to get to where people
- 40:13don't care? About this as much as they used
- 40:15to, I think it needs to get back to a more exciting and civilized
- 40:21crowd situation where it's not so ugly and and, you know, where
- 40:24it's really a genuine thrill to watch it.
- 40:27And the people are, you know, it's an intense atmosphere, but
- 40:29it's not ugly and the, you know, and it's become something that
- 40:33the players enjoy doing that that's what makes for a good TV
- 40:37event and competitive event. If those are lackluster, yeah, I
- 40:41mean, it's going to lose its luster as an never mind where it
- 40:44is on the schedule. Yeah, Saturday was ugly, as they
- 40:47said on Sky Sports, When it comes to Tiger and Scotty,
- 40:49sometimes the best hunters prefer to hunt alone.
- 40:52We will hunt you down in November to talk about Michigan
- 40:54State, where you graduated from in Iowa.
- 40:57Thank you, Matt Rudy, for doing this.
- 40:58Out of time. Appreciate.
- 40:59We'll talk to you in November. Thank you.
- 41:02You bet. Hour 2.
- 41:02Coming up next, Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports Radio
- 41:04Network.
