- 0:11Hello, friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday, it's the 16th of
- 0:15January and it is great to have your company.
- 0:18Thanks for tapping on play, inviting me into your day.
- 0:21No matter where you are, no matter what's going on, it is so
- 0:24good to share this time with you on this very strange day.
- 0:29I'd never heard of this, but today is actually in America
- 0:33National Nothing Day. That's right, it's National
- 0:38Nothing Day. This day was created to honour
- 0:43and observe nothing, but just to celebrate for the sake of
- 0:48nothing. Which strikes me as very, very
- 0:51strange. And in fact, that is probably
- 0:54the perfect little microcosm that explains exactly what's
- 0:57going on in our readings this week, isn't it?
- 0:59Where instead of standing for something, instead of throwing
- 1:03their heart and soul into the thing that they knew they stood
- 1:06for, these kings ended up just following the whim that caught
- 1:10them in that moment. And for Solomon, that involved
- 1:13following the religious observances of his wives.
- 1:17And for Jeroboam, that meant following that little bit of
- 1:20fear that he had and changing everything about worship that
- 1:25God had told him to be faithful to.
- 1:28So on this National Nothing Day, well, it's not about you, but
- 1:32I'm going to celebrate something.
- 1:33I'm going to celebrate the fact that I have an identity rooted
- 1:37in a very specific something. And that is the God of the
- 1:40universe who says I am loved. And I'm going to stick my feet
- 1:45down on that firm foundation and stand for that something.
- 1:49And I'd invite you to join me in that.
- 1:52And that, friends, is kind of what you're already doing,
- 1:54because here you are taking a moment out of your day to hear
- 1:57God's word. And we are going to hear God's
- 2:01response through his prophet to what Jeroboam has done.
- 2:04And then Jeroboam, of course, in the way of kings to come,
- 2:08ploughs on head first in the wrong direction.
- 2:11So let us read this together in First Kings chapter 13.
- 2:24At the Lord's command, a man of God from Judah went to Bethel,
- 2:28arriving there just as Jeroboam was approaching the altar to
- 2:31burn incense. Then, at the Lord's command, he
- 2:34shouted, Oh, altar, altar, this is what the Lord says.
- 2:40A child named Josiah will be born into the dynasty of David
- 2:45on you. He will sacrifice the priests
- 2:48from the Pagan shrines who come here to burn incense and human
- 2:52bones will be burnt on you. That same day, the man of God
- 2:57gave a sign to prove his message.
- 2:59He said the Lord has promised to give this sign.
- 3:03This altar will be split apart and it's ashes will be poured
- 3:08out on the ground. When King Jeroboam heard the man
- 3:12of God speaking against the altar at Bethel, he pointed at
- 3:15him and shouted, Seize that man. But instantly the King's hand
- 3:20became paralysed in that position and he couldn't pull it
- 3:23back. At that same time, a wide crack
- 3:27appeared in the altar and the ashes poured out.
- 3:30Just as the man of God had predicted in his message from
- 3:33the Lord, the king cried out to the man of God, Please ask the
- 3:38Lord your God to restore my hand again.
- 3:42So the man of God prayed to the Lord, and the King's hand was
- 3:45restored, and he could move it again.
- 3:48Then the king said to the man of God, Come to the palace with me
- 3:52and have something to eat, and I will give you a gift.
- 3:56But the man of God said to the king, Even if you gave me half
- 4:00of everything you own, I would not go with you.
- 4:03I would not eat or drink anything in this place, for the
- 4:07Lord gave me this command. You must not eat or drink
- 4:11anything while you were there, and do not return to Judah by
- 4:14the same way you came. So he left Bethel and went home
- 4:18another way. As it happened, there was an old
- 4:22prophet living in Bethel, and his sons came home and told him
- 4:26what the man of God had done in Bethel that day.
- 4:29They also told their father what the man had said to the king.
- 4:32The old prophet asked them which way did he go?
- 4:36So they showed their father which Rd the man of God had
- 4:39taken quick saddle the donkey, the old man said.
- 4:43So they saddled the donkey for him and he mounted it.
- 4:46Then he rode after the man of God and found him sitting under
- 4:50a great tree. The old prophet asked him, Are
- 4:54you the man of God who came from Judah?
- 4:57Yes, I am, he replied. Then he said to the man of God,
- 5:02Come home with me and eat some food.
- 5:06No, I cannot. He replied, I'm not allowed to
- 5:09eat or drink anything here in this place, for the Lord gave me
- 5:13this command. You must not eat or drink
- 5:16anything while you were there, and do not return to Judah by
- 5:19the same way you came. But the old prophet answered, I
- 5:24am a prophet too, just as you are, and an Angel gave me this
- 5:29command from the Lord. Bring him home with you so he
- 5:32can have something to eat and drink.
- 5:35But the old man was lying to him.
- 5:37So they went back together, and the man of God ate and drank at
- 5:41the prophet's home. Then while they were sitting at
- 5:44the table, a command from the Lord came to the old prophet,
- 5:48and he cried out to the man of God from Judah.
- 5:51This is what the Lord says. You have defied the word of the
- 5:56Lord and have disobeyed the command the Lord your God gave
- 5:59you. You came back to this place and
- 6:02ate and drank, where He told you not to eat or drink.
- 6:07Because of this, your body will not be buried in the grave of
- 6:11your ancestors. After the man of God had
- 6:14finished eating and drinking, the old prophet saddled his own
- 6:18donkey for him and the man of God started off again.
- 6:22But as he was travelling along, a lion came out and killed him.
- 6:27His body lay there on the road with the donkey and the lion
- 6:30standing beside it. People who passed by saw the
- 6:33body lying in the road and the lion standing beside it, and
- 6:37they went and reported it to Bethel, where the old prophet
- 6:39lived. When the prophet heard the
- 6:41report, he said it is the man of God who disobeyed the Lord's
- 6:46command. The Lord has fulfilled His word
- 6:50by causing the lion to attack and kill him.
- 6:53Then the prophet said to his sons, Saddle a donkey for me.
- 6:57So they saddled a donkey, and he went out and found the body
- 7:00lying in the road. The donkey and lion were still
- 7:03standing there beside it, for the lion had not eaten the body
- 7:06nor attacked the donkey. So the prophet laid the body of
- 7:10the man of God on the donkey and took it back to town to mourn
- 7:13over him and bury him. He laid the body in his own
- 7:17grave, crying out in grief. Oh, my brother.
- 7:23Afterward the prophet said to his sons, When I die, bury me in
- 7:27the grave where the man of God is buried.
- 7:29Lay my bones beside his bones. For the message the Lord told
- 7:34him to proclaim against the altar in Bethel and against the
- 7:37Pagan shrines in the towns of Samaria will certainly come
- 7:42true. But even after this, Jeroboam
- 7:46did not turn from his evil ways. He continued to choose priests
- 7:50from the common people. He appointed anyone who wanted
- 7:54to become a priest for the Pagan shrines.
- 7:56This became a great sin and resulted in the utter
- 8:00destruction of Jeroboam's dynasty from the face of the
- 8:04earth. Our Lord, as we hear this story,
- 8:18it's confusing to hear these different prophets doing
- 8:21different things and disobeying Your word and thinking they're
- 8:25doing the right thing. Oh Lord, it sounds a lot like
- 8:27our lives where often we face a multitude of choices and it's
- 8:32hard to know which way to go. Lord, give us the wisdom to stop
- 8:40rather than rushing headlong into decisions in our lives to
- 8:43stop and pause and seek your wisdom.
- 8:48And Lord, I pray that Your Spirit would grow in US so that
- 8:53your heart shapes our own and that our choices can reflect
- 8:59your priorities for us and the ministry that you have planned
- 9:03for our lives. Our Lord, again today, I
- 9:07recommit myself and everyone praying together now we commit
- 9:13ourselves to you and to your way and that each decision we make
- 9:18that we would bring that to You so that we could truly live
- 9:22lives of service. Not to our own goals, not to the
- 9:25goals that the world tells us are important, but to the goals
- 9:29of you and your Kingdom. And we pray this in the saving
- 9:33name of truth, your Son Jesus, Amen.
