- 0:00Speaker 1: This is the Ben and Ashley I Almost Famous podcast
- 0:03Speaker 1: with iHeartRadio.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Garrett is here talking about his wedding. Garrett, congratulations, Thank
- 0:09Speaker 2: you hey, Garrett.
- 0:10Speaker 3: So, I mean, this is wild. It just feels like,
- 0:16Speaker 3: tell us about your story with Alex, your wife, who
- 0:20Speaker 3: you've been with for about three years now, right, yeah, a.
- 0:23Speaker 4: Little over three years or right around three years?
- 0:25Speaker 3: Where does time go? Is what? I mean? What three years?
- 0:29Speaker 4: I know, it flies by super fast. I was living
- 0:31Speaker 4: in San Diego, and I mean, just cutting to it.
- 0:35Speaker 4: She just sent me a DM and we met up.
- 0:38Speaker 4: So it turned out that she lived like three miles
- 0:40Speaker 4: down the road from where I was at. I was
- 0:41Speaker 4: living with my brother, my sister in law and their
- 0:44Speaker 4: little guy, and she lived down the street, and I
- 0:48Speaker 4: was like, let's meet up. So that's kind of how
- 0:51Speaker 4: it went.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Dms are a good way to meet people. That's a
- 0:54Speaker 2: good way. I like that move, you know.
- 0:56Speaker 4: I was kind of skeptical about dms, but then I
- 1:00Speaker 4: had to creep on her. So I had because she
- 1:02Speaker 4: was private, and I was like, she's hot, she's blonde,
- 1:05Speaker 4: she looks like she's fit, you know what I mean,
- 1:07Speaker 4: And so I freaking followed her and then she messaged
- 1:11Speaker 4: me back, and then the rest is history.
- 1:13Speaker 3: It was relatively soon after you ended things with Becca,
- 1:17Speaker 3: and you and Becca ended things together, And was it
- 1:22Speaker 3: your first date out back out there?
- 1:25Speaker 4: Yeah, it was so the odds, I know, I know,
- 1:29Speaker 4: so it's pretty crazy that it's the first person after that.
- 1:33Speaker 4: But I think I was just in the mindset that
- 1:35Speaker 4: I knew what I wanted and what I was looking for,
- 1:38Speaker 4: and then she pretty much fit all of that.
- 1:41Speaker 2: So, so it's been three years now that you two
- 1:44Speaker 2: have been together. When did you really know that she
- 1:48Speaker 2: was somebody that you could potentially see spending the rest
- 1:52Speaker 2: of your life with.
- 1:54Speaker 4: I would say she made a commitment. I moved back
- 1:57Speaker 4: to Reno. I was following a lifelong dream and career
- 2:01Speaker 4: up here, and she was down in San Diego, still
- 2:04Speaker 4: living a block from the beach. And then she's like,
- 2:07Speaker 4: you know, I want to make this happen. I'll do
- 2:09Speaker 4: whatever it takes to make it work. So she moved
- 2:12Speaker 4: up to Reno, she left living by the beach and
- 2:17Speaker 4: committed herself to me and making the relationship work. And
- 2:21Speaker 4: then especially when I went through an academy up here,
- 2:24Speaker 4: she was there for me every single day, made sure
- 2:27Speaker 4: that you know, I was taking care of everything was
- 2:29Speaker 4: set because it's hard going through those academies. It's a
- 2:32Speaker 4: grind academy. It was a fire academy. Oh okay, Yeah,
- 2:37Speaker 4: so it was a grind because and it's hard on
- 2:40Speaker 4: the relationship too, because every day I wake up, you know,
- 2:44Speaker 4: like five in the morning, get all my stuff ready
- 2:46Speaker 4: for academy. By the time I get home, it's like
- 2:49Speaker 4: seven o'clock at night. Then I got a study till
- 2:51Speaker 4: like ten nine, ten o'clock, go to bed, wake up,
- 2:54Speaker 4: do it again the next day. Yeah, it made it work.
- 2:58Speaker 4: And then it was sometime in there like there after
- 3:00Speaker 4: I was like, wow, you know, like in our hardest
- 3:03Speaker 4: time of the relationship and the most challenging, she was
- 3:06Speaker 4: there for me. She never you know, shied away from
- 3:09Speaker 4: it or anything like that. And that's really when I
- 3:11Speaker 4: could tell that I can spend the rest of my
- 3:13Speaker 4: life with somebody like that.
- 3:16Speaker 2: How soon was that, like after you guys met just
- 3:18Speaker 2: her timeline purposes.
- 3:21Speaker 4: That would have been that would have been right around
- 3:25Speaker 4: the two year mark, like year two year mark, so.
- 3:29Speaker 2: She was all in. She said, Hey, I want to
- 3:32Speaker 2: be his support system. I know he'd do it.
- 3:35Speaker 4: For me.
- 3:35Speaker 2: This is a season he needs me. I'm going to Reno.
- 3:38Speaker 2: I'm leaving the beach.
- 3:41Speaker 3: Yeah, Reno is tough as somebody is. Just people who
- 3:44Speaker 3: fly into Reno sometimes.
- 3:46Speaker 2: I like Reno. I think it's one of the best
- 3:48Speaker 2: things in the US. I think it's great.
- 3:50Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:50Speaker 3: I haven't explored it much beyond the airport. It's always
- 3:54Speaker 3: just a stop on the way to Tahoe. For like,
- 3:56Speaker 3: Amy's like get together as our producer, Amy, you don't.
- 3:59Speaker 2: See the best part SNA. Reno has a lot going on.
- 4:02Speaker 2: It's a great city.
- 4:03Speaker 4: And we got Tahoe in our backyard.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Yeah, it's fantastic.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Okay. So why did you decide to go to a
- 4:10Speaker 3: fire academy? Are you firefighter? Now you graduate? Okay? So
- 4:14Speaker 3: why did you decide to do that in Reno and
- 4:16Speaker 3: not maybe in San Diego.
- 4:19Speaker 4: So I was looking at San Diego and there was
- 4:23Speaker 4: just like different career opportunities. I applied to San Diego.
- 4:26Speaker 4: I applied all over. They call it like a shotgun application.
- 4:29Speaker 4: So I pretty much did everywhere on the West coast.
- 4:33Speaker 4: I did California, Oregon, Washington obviously in Nevad Idaho, A
- 4:38Speaker 4: lot of departments and I just started testing like crazy
- 4:42Speaker 4: to see which one I could get into. And then
- 4:46Speaker 4: just being up in Reno, I had a friend that
- 4:47Speaker 4: lived up here and was like, Yo, why don't you
- 4:50Speaker 4: come up here. We got some people because getting into
- 4:52Speaker 4: fire is one of the hardest things ever. It's almost
- 4:56Speaker 4: like if you don't know somebody in it, it's like
- 5:00Speaker 4: it can take a very long time to get in it.
- 5:02Speaker 4: A lot of people will quit. So the process was
- 5:06Speaker 4: kind of heinous. But anyways, came up to Reno and
- 5:09Speaker 4: my buddy was like, you could live with me, won't
- 5:12Speaker 4: charge your rent because I know times are going to
- 5:14Speaker 4: be tough. So I started working at an ambulance company
- 5:17Speaker 4: and then I got I tested with a couple of
- 5:20Speaker 4: departments around here, and then I finally got picked up
- 5:22Speaker 4: by one. So the department that hired me is the
- 5:25Speaker 4: academy I went through. Gotcha.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Yeah, So this is, obviously, you said, a lifelong dream
- 5:31Speaker 2: of yours. What about it made it a lifetrong lifelong dream?
- 5:36Speaker 2: Is it an interest in just helping people or is
- 5:39Speaker 2: it you know, has fire and like the mitigation of fires,
- 5:41Speaker 2: something that's always intrigued you.
- 5:43Speaker 4: Uh yeah, a little bit of everything. I've always enjoyed
- 5:46Speaker 4: just helping people, but I think one of the biggest
- 5:49Speaker 4: things is being a part of a team and playing
- 5:52Speaker 4: like collegiate sports and stuff like that, and getting that
- 5:56Speaker 4: fill for being a part of a team. It's almost
- 5:58Speaker 4: like that same thing in the fire department where you're
- 6:01Speaker 4: all trying to work together to accomplish a goal. You
- 6:03Speaker 4: train together, you work out together, you eat together, you
- 6:06Speaker 4: form like a special bond. And I was like, that's
- 6:09Speaker 4: so sick that there's a career where you can have
- 6:12Speaker 4: that same feeling as well as helping people and you're
- 6:15Speaker 4: always improving or the thing is always like you can
- 6:19Speaker 4: always be training and every day is different. I love that.
- 6:24Speaker 3: So you guys got married in Hawaii this month? Why Hawaii?
- 6:28Speaker 3: What was the vibe?
- 6:29Speaker 4: Like? She's always kind of wanted a little destination wedding
- 6:33Speaker 4: for me. I'm like, hey, I can get married anywhere.
- 6:36Speaker 4: She's had a vision since she was a little girl
- 6:38Speaker 4: kind of where she wanted to get married. Destination She
- 6:41Speaker 4: thought of Hawaii. We were on vacation there last year
- 6:44Speaker 4: and I had an old teammate actually and friend of
- 6:46Speaker 4: mine who got married at the place that we got
- 6:48Speaker 4: married at, but in a different location. And she's like,
- 6:52Speaker 4: oh my gosh, Alec's gorgeous. So when we were in Hawaii,
- 6:55Speaker 4: we're in Maui, we flew over to a Wahu to
- 6:58Speaker 4: go check it out. Immediately when we showed up to
- 7:01Speaker 4: the venue, We're just both stricken, like, oh my gosh,
- 7:05Speaker 4: the mountains, the ocean, just everything was there. What we
- 7:08Speaker 4: both love was in one one venue on location. It
- 7:11Speaker 4: was nice.
- 7:12Speaker 3: Oh perfect? Nice.
- 7:13Speaker 4: How many people we had just about one hundred people there,
- 7:17Speaker 4: a little over one hundred.
- 7:18Speaker 3: That's a lot for destination, buddy, that's really nice.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Yeah, were you nervous, like is this something you've obviously
- 7:35Speaker 2: been on national television? What were the emotions like leading
- 7:38Speaker 2: up to the wedding?
- 7:40Speaker 4: You know that's her dad asked me that too. You
- 7:42Speaker 4: got to be anxious And I'm like, no, I'm not anxious.
- 7:44Speaker 4: You're nervous. I'm like, I'm not nervous. I was like,
- 7:47Speaker 4: I'm excited. We've been engaged for a year. I could
- 7:50Speaker 4: have gotten married and done this a year ago when
- 7:52Speaker 4: I popped the question to her, So it's just been
- 7:54Speaker 4: a year. I'm more excited than anything because I knew
- 7:57Speaker 4: that it was like a lot of our close friends
- 7:59Speaker 4: and family there, and then it was going to be
- 8:01Speaker 4: one hell of a party. Like it was so sick
- 8:04Speaker 4: how we had Alex got it all down. She loves
- 8:07Speaker 4: live music. Her family is very musical, so she's like,
- 8:10Speaker 4: we got to have a sax player there.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Oh I love that, Yes, under rated instrument.
- 8:15Speaker 4: It was so sick. I mean the sacks mixed in
- 8:18Speaker 4: with the DJ. She put the whole playlist together, so
- 8:21Speaker 4: it wasn't like any typical dig at all. She's like,
- 8:24Speaker 4: if you play one typical wedding song like you're fired,
- 8:28Speaker 4: I don't care. I'll kick your as.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Alex and I would get along.
- 8:31Speaker 4: So well, yes, absolutely.
- 8:34Speaker 3: Okay, So she was a Bachelor fan obviously beforehand. Since
- 8:40Speaker 3: she's slid into your dms, did she give up the
- 8:44Speaker 3: show once you guys got together?
- 8:47Speaker 2: It was weird?
- 8:48Speaker 3: Is she still like it? What's her relationship to the
- 8:51Speaker 3: Bachelor now?
- 8:52Speaker 4: She doesn't really watch the show if she does watch it,
- 8:55Speaker 4: maybe she doesn't in secret, I don't know, but no,
- 8:57Speaker 4: I don't think she watches the show anymore. She was
- 9:00Speaker 4: like a heavy viewer of it in the past. She
- 9:03Speaker 4: just kind of like watched it. She didn't watch like
- 9:05Speaker 4: every episode, but she'd watch it here and there with
- 9:08Speaker 4: her friends.
- 9:08Speaker 2: So yeah, no, obviously she she saw something in you
- 9:13Speaker 2: from the show that she said, I am going to
- 9:14Speaker 2: message this guy. Has she told you yet? Like what
- 9:17Speaker 2: made her say, out of all the guys that come
- 9:20Speaker 2: through the show, out of all the seasons that she's watched,
- 9:23Speaker 2: this is the dude I want to DM.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Not really, she was just she said that it kind
- 9:30Speaker 4: of happened on a whim with her friends where it
- 9:32Speaker 4: was like, who is people that were on the show
- 9:35Speaker 4: that would be like a good dude that might be
- 9:39Speaker 4: in the area, And that's kind of how she came
- 9:41Speaker 4: across me. And then she said when she was watching
- 9:43Speaker 4: the season that I was her favorite on the season.
- 9:47Speaker 4: But anyways, but she just said it was she liked
- 9:51Speaker 4: that I was outdoorsy and I wasn't like trying to
- 9:56Speaker 4: seek fame or anything like that, so it was kind
- 9:59Speaker 4: of more attractive to her.
- 10:02Speaker 3: What's weird about being part of Vagination is that when
- 10:04Speaker 3: you do break up, you have to kind of see
- 10:08Speaker 3: your ex continue to do life via the media. How
- 10:13Speaker 3: has it been watching Becca get engaged to go on
- 10:16Speaker 3: Paradise have a baby.
- 10:20Speaker 4: I Mean, it's totally fine with me. Life goes on.
- 10:23Speaker 4: Life moves and for me it's like when something's done,
- 10:26Speaker 4: it's done, and I make that set in my mind
- 10:28Speaker 4: in my heart, and when it's like that, like there's
- 10:31Speaker 4: no going back for me. So when we broke up
- 10:34Speaker 4: and there there was no chance of that reconnecting, it's
- 10:38Speaker 4: like life goes on. We just want what's best for
- 10:40Speaker 4: each other, at least someone what's best for her. So,
- 10:43Speaker 4: you know, whatever she did to get to where she's
- 10:45Speaker 4: at now, I'm happy for and excited as long as
- 10:48Speaker 4: she's happy and living life the way she wants to.
- 10:51Speaker 4: So to me, it has no bother, no worry, anything
- 10:55Speaker 4: like that other than just hopefully you know, she's living
- 10:57Speaker 4: the life that she wants.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Yeah, it is. It is wild though, you know, for
- 11:03Speaker 2: me personally, sometimes maybe earlier on, to see this person
- 11:08Speaker 2: that you're known to be with from the show Live
- 11:11Speaker 2: Life and they're everywhere, you can't escape it. It's like
- 11:14Speaker 2: a constant reminder of the show. Really it was to me.
- 11:19Speaker 2: So that's the best perspective, Garrett, to just be. You know,
- 11:22Speaker 2: you both moved on. Now you're both doing your thing,
- 11:26Speaker 2: and it sounds like you both are working working through
- 11:30Speaker 2: life in the most beautiful way and one of those ways.
- 11:32Speaker 2: As you've mentioned, you're in Reno, live in Reno as
- 11:35Speaker 2: a fire men. Are you guys going to stay in Reno?
- 11:38Speaker 2: Is that like you think that's the spot now forever.
- 11:42Speaker 4: I never say any things forever, but it's our spot
- 11:45Speaker 4: for a while for sure, because getting going in the
- 11:49Speaker 4: career and everything like that. What's nice with the with
- 11:52Speaker 4: this job though, is that it does give you a
- 11:54Speaker 4: little bit of flexibility and the option to possibly live
- 11:57Speaker 4: elsewhere and then commute in. But I don't foresee that
- 12:01Speaker 4: happening anytime soon.
- 12:04Speaker 3: Did you have any bachelor alum at your wedding? Forget
- 12:06Speaker 3: to ask that earlier.
- 12:08Speaker 4: No bachelor alem at the wedding?
- 12:12Speaker 3: All right, Well, thank you so much for joining us, Garrett.
- 12:15Speaker 3: It's been really good to catch up with you. Is
- 12:16Speaker 3: there anything else on the docket right now for you
- 12:19Speaker 3: and Alex house kids?
- 12:24Speaker 4: No, just thinking about the future. So hopefully we'll get
- 12:27Speaker 4: a house here. I don't know when, with how the
- 12:30Speaker 4: market is and just life in general. So we're just
- 12:33Speaker 4: coming back from being on the wedding doing a little
- 12:36Speaker 4: honeymoon action. Now it's just getting ready for the holidays,
- 12:39Speaker 4: paying off that wedding that we.
- 12:41Speaker 3: Just yeah, yeah, you enjoy the slowness and the bliss
- 12:44Speaker 3: that is. Yeah, the first year and such.
- 12:47Speaker 4: Yeah for sure. So but kids in the future for sure.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Man, We're pumped for you. Congratulations once again. You guys
- 12:55Speaker 2: are a beautiful couple and wishing the best.
- 12:58Speaker 4: Thank you, guys. I appreciate you having me on here
- 13:00Speaker 4: and it's good to see you both too. Bye Garrett, Hi,
- 13:03Speaker 4: bye you guys.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Weddings are all throughout Bacheloration right now and here it's
- 13:08Speaker 2: the Almost Famous podcast. We are covering him all, from
- 13:11Speaker 2: Chris and Lauren to garretton Alex to Kenney and MARII.
- 13:16Speaker 2: Obviously we had Sarah Herron on just a few short
- 13:20Speaker 2: weeks ago. Uh, there's just so many weddings we need
- 13:23Speaker 2: to get. We're gonna get teon. She's busy right now,
- 13:26Speaker 2: but we're gonna get teon. It's just been a beautiful
- 13:28Speaker 2: season of love and laughter and life for Bachelornation and
- 13:32Speaker 2: we could not be more excited to be talking about it.
- 13:34Speaker 3: But until next time, I've been Ben, I've been Ashley Cia.
