- 0:00Speaker 1: Good friend, longtime friend and for several years broadcast partner
- 0:05Speaker 1: Bill Shone, the voice of the San Antonio Spurs.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Who joins And.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Now you've got a game to night. So do you
- 0:10Speaker 1: get Thanksgiving and home tomorrow?
- 0:12Speaker 3: Yes? Yes. The NBA never plays on Thanksgiving or Election.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Day, no matter.
- 0:18Speaker 3: I just did one seriously, or Christmas Eve.
- 0:21Speaker 4: I do a thing called Spurs Flashback, which is like
- 0:23Speaker 4: this date and Spurs history.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Yeah, and on on December twenty fourth.
- 0:27Speaker 4: It's always a problem because there's never a game that day.
- 0:30Speaker 4: So there's a former Spurs player that was born on
- 0:33Speaker 4: Christmas Eve named Paul Pressey. You probably remember from Paul
- 0:37Speaker 4: Pressy played at Tulsa and I was a longtime assistant
- 0:40Speaker 4: in the NBA. Really one of the first point forwards
- 0:42Speaker 4: in the NBA. Anyway, he was born on December twenty fourth,
- 0:45Speaker 4: So for the longest time, my Spurs flashback was born
- 0:48Speaker 4: on this day, Paul.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Pressey, who played for the Spurs. There was no games
- 0:52Speaker 3: to call on December twenty fourth.
- 0:54Speaker 1: On December twenty fourth, two thousand and nine, I was
- 0:57Speaker 1: on a plane with the Spurs. We were on our
- 1:00Speaker 1: way to LA to play the Lakers on Christmas Day.
- 1:02Speaker 1: I mean that would probably because you do. You've had
- 1:04Speaker 1: a lot of Christmas Day calls I know that.
- 1:07Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, not lately, to be honest with you. Last
- 1:09Speaker 4: one of LaMarcus Aldridge was the start. The last time
- 1:11Speaker 4: we had a Christmas Day game, that was back in sixteen,
- 1:14Speaker 4: so it's been a minute.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, So last night, nice trip to Salt Lake
- 1:21Speaker 1: in the win over of the Jazz. Hey, is there
- 1:24Speaker 1: a lot of Utah Hockey Club merch on sale there
- 1:29Speaker 1: at the Delta Center.
- 1:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:31Speaker 4: And as you know, Craig, my son Eric is a
- 1:33Speaker 4: meteorologist and has been for the National Weather Service in
- 1:36Speaker 4: Salt Lake City, and he's gone to several games and
- 1:38Speaker 4: he really loves it. So and the cool thing is
- 1:41Speaker 4: our hockey broadcast is located at the same area where
- 1:44Speaker 4: the basketball broadcast is.
- 1:46Speaker 3: It's really good for hockey.
- 1:47Speaker 4: Not so much for basketball, a little high up for basketball,
- 1:49Speaker 4: but for hockey's.
- 1:50Speaker 1: As they would say, the hockey box, right, Yeah, for
- 1:53Speaker 1: hockey box. And our good friend and former colleague working
- 1:57Speaker 1: with me and she also worked at Kai.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Sarah Mirrifield fall in their telecast does.
- 2:01Speaker 4: Nice, yeah, very good and thorough. Bailey of course, an
- 2:04Speaker 4: NC State guy. I know you're more a Carolina tarhell fan,
- 2:07Speaker 4: but Thurtle' is a great guy and he's their color
- 2:09Speaker 4: analyst on TV.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Yeah, I remember thorough vividly from the Jim Valvano Cardiac
- 2:15Speaker 1: pat team in nineteen eighty three. And that's a great
- 2:18Speaker 1: thirty for thirty or thorough by the way, since.
- 2:21Speaker 4: We're spaking about North Carolina, Danny Green pinch hit for
- 2:24Speaker 4: Shawn Elliott on the telecast last night. And of course
- 2:26Speaker 4: Danny and O nine champion with the Tar Heels and
- 2:29Speaker 4: a three time NBA champion, and of.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Course played for the Spurs for seven years.
- 2:32Speaker 4: And he's going to be very successful Craig in the business,
- 2:34Speaker 4: very smart, very funny, and uh you know, he's got
- 2:38Speaker 4: a lot of connections.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Danny's going to do very well in the business.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I totally agree that dude star is on the rise.
- 2:43Speaker 1: When I heard he was retiring, I thought, oh, TV
- 2:45Speaker 1: is going to be his deal, because he's just good.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Yeah. He was my free game guest last night.
- 2:50Speaker 4: It was never a problem, and he in fact, he
- 2:52Speaker 4: thanked me for all the pre game and postgame interviews
- 2:55Speaker 4: I did with him, saying that it prepped him for
- 2:56Speaker 4: this opportunity.
- 2:57Speaker 3: But he's just a natural. He'll he'll be fine.
- 3:00Speaker 2: All right. So what's your take right now?
- 3:03Speaker 1: We talked a few weeks back before the start of
- 3:05Speaker 1: the season, but how about your take on this Spurs
- 3:09Speaker 1: team ten and eight right now to win five away
- 3:12Speaker 1: and back home the night against the Lakers. They're continuing
- 3:14Speaker 1: to grow and chose some things well.
- 3:16Speaker 4: The important thing I think is the knowledge that veterans bring.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Harrison Barnes and Chris Paul have really made a lot
- 3:23Speaker 4: of difference, and they know how to win now in
- 3:25Speaker 4: the fourth quarter because Chris Paul's been doing it for
- 3:27Speaker 4: twenty years. Harrison Barnes, believe it or not, with the
- 3:29Speaker 4: NBA Player of the Week this week, the first time
- 3:31Speaker 4: he's gotten that award, the longest tenured player to ever
- 3:33Speaker 4: win that award for the first time thirteen years in
- 3:36Speaker 4: But are real good. He's just been a Spur his
- 3:38Speaker 4: whole career, even though he hasn't been on the Spurs.
- 3:40Speaker 3: He says, that kind of guy.
- 3:42Speaker 4: I've always loved Harrison Barnes, a great guy to go
- 3:44Speaker 4: interview and chat it up with, and I'm really happy
- 3:47Speaker 4: that he's part of the team and the experience that
- 3:49Speaker 4: those guys bring and the professionalism that they bring.
- 3:53Speaker 3: I think it can't be understated because these.
- 3:55Speaker 4: Young guys learn how to win, learn how to be
- 3:57Speaker 4: pros when they're around people like that.
- 3:59Speaker 5: Bill, what have you mean of Webbinama's second season and
- 4:02Speaker 5: specifically how he's grown offensively.
- 4:05Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, he's really shooting the three a lot
- 4:07Speaker 4: more on it. Early he wasn't hitting them very often.
- 4:09Speaker 4: In fact that he's been twenty two percent for a
- 4:11Speaker 4: while and people are like, wait a minute, why is
- 4:12Speaker 4: he out there shooting threes? Well, it's all part of
- 4:14Speaker 4: his package. He wants to be a perimeter player as
- 4:16Speaker 4: well as an inside player. You know, we've never seen
- 4:18Speaker 4: a player quite like this. But now he's really getting
- 4:21Speaker 4: the rhythm. Now he's really hitting the threes on a
- 4:23Speaker 4: regular basis, and he's piling up the points.
- 4:25Speaker 3: He had thirty four points last night.
- 4:27Speaker 4: And I think the fact that he's a threat out there,
- 4:29Speaker 4: a guy like Walker Kessler, who's really more of an
- 4:31Speaker 4: inside defender, really not comfortable going out there and guarding
- 4:35Speaker 4: a seven foot four guy on the perimeter. So I
- 4:38Speaker 4: think that he does a lot of things that are
- 4:39Speaker 4: very different. And we're going to continue to see him
- 4:41Speaker 4: evolve as a player. Remember he is only early in
- 4:44Speaker 4: his second season. Last night he had his fourteenth thirty
- 4:48Speaker 4: point game, if you could imagine that. So he's doing
- 4:51Speaker 4: some things early in his career that he's really building upon.
- 4:54Speaker 3: And I think he's really benefiting.
- 4:56Speaker 4: From the presence of Chris Paul because CP three, as
- 4:59Speaker 4: I mentioned, how to win the games in the fourth quarter.
- 5:01Speaker 3: That was a problem for the Spurs.
- 5:02Speaker 4: They are very competitive over the last couple of years,
- 5:04Speaker 4: but they weren't closing out games in the fourth quarter.
- 5:06Speaker 3: But when you have a presence like.
- 5:08Speaker 4: Chris Paul and also Harrison Barnes, it's much easier to
- 5:11Speaker 4: win because those guys have been there.
- 5:13Speaker 5: Four game winning streak, I think it's the longest since
- 5:16Speaker 5: twenty twenty twenty one for the Spurs. And during this
- 5:19Speaker 5: four game win streak, you beat in Oklahoma City Thunder
- 5:22Speaker 5: at home in which Wenby did not play, and then
- 5:24Speaker 5: to win over the Warriors to the top teams in
- 5:27Speaker 5: the Western Conference too, of the best teams in the
- 5:28Speaker 5: Western Conference. What have you made of this four game
- 5:30Speaker 5: win streak.
- 5:31Speaker 4: I think the Warriors win showed that they've really improved defensively,
- 5:35Speaker 4: this Stephan Castle kid was all over Steph Curry in
- 5:37Speaker 4: that game.
- 5:38Speaker 3: In fact, my Marque matchup.
- 5:39Speaker 4: Going to the game with Steph versus Steph, I'm thinking, well,
- 5:42Speaker 4: this is going to be a baptism by fire for Castle.
- 5:45Speaker 4: Steph Curry went five for sixteen that night.
- 5:47Speaker 3: Guys. Now that's not to say.
- 5:49Speaker 4: That every time Steph Castle goes up Againsteph Curry, that's
- 5:51Speaker 4: going to be the result. But for the first time
- 5:53Speaker 4: to go up against him and really be in a
- 5:54Speaker 4: competitive situation, the Spurs held the Warriors to thirteen points
- 5:58Speaker 4: in the fourth quarter of that ball game, which was
- 6:00Speaker 4: a tight game, and they pulled away late. So I
- 6:02Speaker 4: think that they take this step forward. Defensively. They're now
- 6:04Speaker 4: in the top five both field goal percentage defensive points allowed.
- 6:08Speaker 4: They were in the bottom third of the league in
- 6:09Speaker 4: those categories last year, so they certainly have taken a
- 6:12Speaker 4: step forward. And a lot of this is without one
- 6:13Speaker 4: of their best defenders and Jeremy Sohan, who's been out
- 6:16Speaker 4: with a broken thumb.
- 6:17Speaker 2: All right, you knew this question was going to come Bill.
- 6:19Speaker 1: On her text line, somebody asked, please ask Bill how
- 6:23Speaker 1: he feels about the work so far in the development
- 6:26Speaker 1: of I'm going to attempt his name. Sandrew is at
- 6:29Speaker 1: Mamu Kellashavili.
- 6:33Speaker 4: Craig, you're so good at things, it's really easy. It's
- 6:36Speaker 4: a mamu Keli Shpeeley.
- 6:37Speaker 3: Sure.
- 6:37Speaker 4: He's a player from the Republic of Georgia. He played
- 6:40Speaker 4: a seat in Hall. He played all four years of
- 6:42Speaker 4: seat in the Hall. So he's kind of a season
- 6:44Speaker 4: Guy's twenty four to twenty five years old now. But
- 6:46Speaker 4: he's a very fun player to cover because he's like
- 6:50Speaker 4: a guy who never stops offensively here just all over
- 6:52Speaker 4: the place, moves very well without the ball, he shoots
- 6:54Speaker 4: the ball well. He's not a great defensive player, but
- 6:57Speaker 4: he's earning his minutes because of what he can do offensively.
- 7:00Speaker 3: He's a real energy guy. I think Webby really.
- 7:02Speaker 4: Likes playing with him because he just opens up the
- 7:04Speaker 4: floor with Wenby because he takes up so much space
- 7:06Speaker 4: by moving around so much. But he's a ball of
- 7:08Speaker 4: energy and in spurs he really helps this team.
- 7:11Speaker 2: What's your take on this Lakers team?
- 7:12Speaker 1: I saw like Kevin Durant returned last night, had a
- 7:15Speaker 1: KD like game, and they you know, and they kind
- 7:17Speaker 1: of pushed in the in the second half and pulled
- 7:19Speaker 1: away from the Lakers. Now you got the Lakers coming
- 7:21Speaker 1: in tonight. They're such a curiosity other than Lebron in
- 7:25Speaker 1: looking at this team, aren't they.
- 7:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:28Speaker 4: The thing that really concerns me if I'm a Lakers
- 7:30Speaker 4: fan is overall depth, you know, because Anthony Davis, as
- 7:33Speaker 4: great as he has, he's had some health problems. Lebron,
- 7:35Speaker 4: of course, just is NonStop and he's still playing well
- 7:38Speaker 4: over thirty minutes a game, and that concerns me, even
- 7:40Speaker 4: in his age, you know, and even though he's in
- 7:41Speaker 4: great shape, I just don't love to see a lot
- 7:44Speaker 4: of heavy minutes by guys at that age.
- 7:46Speaker 3: So the lack of depth that they.
- 7:48Speaker 4: Go overall would concern me as far as the Lakers
- 7:50Speaker 4: chances to get to the finals.
- 7:53Speaker 1: All right, So Bill showing the voice of the Spurs
- 7:56Speaker 1: have been with us, We talked some Spurs. I'm gonna
- 7:57Speaker 1: set that aside. Now you and I are going to
- 8:01Speaker 1: share some memories here because we did ten football and
- 8:03Speaker 1: nine basketball seasons together, and we did our share of
- 8:09Speaker 1: Thanksgiving and Black Friday games. Now, first of all, from
- 8:15Speaker 1: the Black Friday perspective, there's obviously the Ricky Williams game,
- 8:21Speaker 1: and we had Ricky on. Ricky actually came out to
- 8:24Speaker 1: Pluckers a couple of weeks ago. Yeah, yeah, he was
- 8:27Speaker 1: in town partially from this documentary and again for folks
- 8:31Speaker 1: if they go to the Longwer Network ap it premiered today,
- 8:35Speaker 1: this return of the Rivalry Rivalry Are Restored, I think
- 8:39Speaker 1: it's called, and they interviewed a lot of us. But
- 8:42Speaker 1: but Ricky's got some great stuff in there and talking
- 8:45Speaker 1: about that game, and there's great stuff with Mac Brown
- 8:49Speaker 1: talking about that game and Ricky was talking about.
- 8:52Speaker 2: So I know, we went into that game.
- 8:54Speaker 1: It was kind of what in the honeymoon period for
- 8:57Speaker 1: Mac there that first season in ninety eight, and we
- 9:00Speaker 1: into that thinking, hey, he's got a chance sixty two
- 9:02Speaker 1: yards away right there. We just think he would get
- 9:04Speaker 1: it on the you know, most of it on that
- 9:06Speaker 1: one carry that got him over the top.
- 9:08Speaker 4: Well that was a really good Aggie defense too, right,
- 9:10Speaker 4: But yeah, win And I don't know, I guess maybe
- 9:13Speaker 4: that was the latter stage of the Wrecking Crew.
- 9:15Speaker 3: I guess the rerecord cru is actually kind of earlier
- 9:16Speaker 3: than that.
- 9:17Speaker 4: But that was a very good, very good A and
- 9:19Speaker 4: M defense that the Ricky ran through. But you know,
- 9:21Speaker 4: that was common that you remember the game at Nebraska, Craig,
- 9:24Speaker 4: Nebraska at home had not given up one hundred yards
- 9:27Speaker 4: to a single back since Barry Sanders, I believe an
- 9:30Speaker 4: Oklahoma State ten year earlier. So you know, Ricky had
- 9:33Speaker 4: those kinds of games against great defenses, and I think
- 9:35Speaker 4: one of the things that gets lost to and Ricky
- 9:37Speaker 4: was a great player. But those guys up front, that
- 9:39Speaker 4: offensive line, they were so much fun to cover. They
- 9:42Speaker 4: were so smart, you know, guys like Octavius Bishop and
- 9:45Speaker 4: Dan Neil, John Elmore, James Adams. That's a really good
- 9:49Speaker 4: offensive line.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, Okay, so correct me if I'm misremembering
- 9:56Speaker 1: this year before ninety seve and it turns out to
- 10:00Speaker 1: be John mcovic's final game.
- 10:03Speaker 2: We go over the night before.
- 10:05Speaker 1: We were staying at the fashionable holiday Ramata inn uh,
- 10:09Speaker 1: the infamous one in ninety nine where the team stayed
- 10:11Speaker 1: where there was no breakfast for him and the wake
- 10:13Speaker 1: up calls went all night long.
- 10:14Speaker 3: But that's another four season in college Station, Craig.
- 10:17Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, that's true.
- 10:19Speaker 1: And weren't we eating like it a Bennigans with our
- 10:24Speaker 1: producer the late Bill Harwell and Greg Klingin's been We
- 10:27Speaker 1: had our broadcast crew with us, and yeah, Narlene mcavig
- 10:32Speaker 1: walked in with the other coaches wives, and I looked
- 10:35Speaker 1: over and I can't believe I actually let it come
- 10:37Speaker 1: out of my mouth, and I said, look.
- 10:39Speaker 2: At that the last supper and and and it happened.
- 10:43Speaker 1: But what I was going to say was the next
- 10:45Speaker 1: day we had the game, and we had the parabolic
- 10:48Speaker 1: mic down there, and uh and then and and going
- 10:54Speaker 1: over there. I believe John and Danny was on the
- 10:58Speaker 1: side when we might have had Lauren samplein back from
- 11:00Speaker 1: is overseas recruiting trips by then. And it walks out
- 11:04Speaker 1: there to midfield and they flipped the coin and the
- 11:10Speaker 1: Aggies win the toss, and whoever the y Aggie captain
- 11:13Speaker 1: was said, we'll defer. And if I remember correctly, clear
- 11:17Speaker 1: as day on our microphones, was James Barron going defer.
- 11:21Speaker 2: Is that the best you can do? I remember that correctly, Yeah.
- 11:28Speaker 4: Yeah, I remember that. You know, it's so many things
- 11:30Speaker 4: you remember about the rivalry, And of course I remember
- 11:32Speaker 4: a lot about the bonfire. You know, it's hard to
- 11:35Speaker 4: believe that they just had with the twenty fifth anniversary
- 11:38Speaker 4: of it, right, Yeah, I remember. It's weird the things
- 11:41Speaker 4: you remember about certain things. But I remember several Aggie
- 11:44Speaker 4: fans coming up to me saying that they'd never feel
- 11:46Speaker 4: the same way about Texas because of the love and
- 11:49Speaker 4: the compassion that Mac Brown and the Longhorn showed to
- 11:52Speaker 4: the Aggies during that very dark period of time back
- 11:55Speaker 4: in ninety nine. So I'll always remember that. I also
- 11:58Speaker 4: remember too, And this is the weird the music part
- 12:00Speaker 4: of me. Doug Somealm from the Texas Tornadoes we I
- 12:03Speaker 4: thinks were one of the great Texas music heroes, died
- 12:07Speaker 4: right around.
- 12:07Speaker 3: That same time, like maybe the next.
- 12:08Speaker 4: Day, And because of all the attention being paid the
- 12:12Speaker 4: Aggie bonfire, I really kind of feel like Doug Salm's death.
- 12:16Speaker 4: He died of a heart attack in Santa Fe while
- 12:18Speaker 4: he was out on the road. It just kind of
- 12:20Speaker 4: gets swept under the rug, you know. So the music
- 12:23Speaker 4: part of me likes, oh man, it's a shame that
- 12:24Speaker 4: Doug Somem didn't get more love when he passed, with.
- 12:27Speaker 2: No doubt about that, all right.
- 12:28Speaker 1: So it helped me out on this one now because
- 12:32Speaker 1: on our text line that what I offered up to
- 12:36Speaker 1: cowboy fans or people just remember. And I said, let
- 12:39Speaker 1: me let me know your most vivid Dallas Cowboys memory.
- 12:46Speaker 1: And somebody said, my most vivid Cowboys Thanksgiving memory. And
- 12:51Speaker 1: that's what I'm talking about, your most vivid Cowboys Thanksgiving memory.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Nineteen ninety three in the snow, leon Lett, I remember
- 12:57Speaker 1: that game because of snow and Dallas Major ice, torm
- 12:59Speaker 1: and Austin. That Thanksgiving one of the coldest Thanksgivings I
- 13:03Speaker 1: ever experienced. That was from NCB.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Were we in college station.
- 13:07Speaker 1: We were, and I, you know, the first five years
- 13:09Speaker 1: when I worked with you, I've commuted for all the
- 13:11Speaker 1: football and men's basketball games. I was still working at
- 13:13Speaker 1: KRLD in Dallas. So I drive down there and you know,
- 13:20Speaker 1: kind of the icy, slippery sliding around the traffic circle
- 13:23Speaker 1: in Mahea on the way down there. And and if
- 13:27Speaker 1: I remember correctly that this was a ballgame that was
- 13:33Speaker 1: fifteen to nine A and M in the fourth quarter.
- 13:37Speaker 1: A and M, whoever won, was going to go to
- 13:39Speaker 1: the Cop Bowl. The long words were five, four and
- 13:41Speaker 1: one going into the game, and the Aggies were like
- 13:44Speaker 1: nine and one or something, and A and M was
- 13:48Speaker 1: up fifteen to nine, and they were punting pretty late
- 13:51Speaker 1: in the game, and it wasn't Shane Leckler, but I
- 13:54Speaker 1: can't remember who the punter was. But he got the
- 13:56Speaker 1: he got it was a bad snap, but he picked
- 13:58Speaker 1: it up in plenty of time and then he just
- 14:00Speaker 1: kind of froze. He didn't do anything, and then he
- 14:03Speaker 1: got he got crushed by long run. He gave him
- 14:04Speaker 1: good field position and actually sat on the air and
- 14:07Speaker 1: I said, I don't understand it. You know, you called
- 14:09Speaker 1: the plane. I said, I don't understand it. I mean,
- 14:11Speaker 1: he had plenty of time and the only thing I
- 14:13Speaker 1: can come up with is he's an aggie or something
- 14:15Speaker 1: like that. And I gotta, I gotta. I got some
- 14:17Speaker 1: emails about that.
- 14:18Speaker 4: But yeah, but we weren't doing the talk show at
- 14:21Speaker 4: the time, were we.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Uh No, No, I was still in doubts.
- 14:24Speaker 3: That I was.
- 14:25Speaker 4: And there are some aggies in Austin that were calling
- 14:27Speaker 4: me on my talk show and complaining about you.
- 14:30Speaker 3: I want you to know that I took some bullets
- 14:32Speaker 3: for you, Craig.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Oh, well, it's it's worked both ways. Say that.
- 14:39Speaker 1: But and that was the game that went down into
- 14:41Speaker 1: the final minutes and Shaye Moren's on the rollout had
- 14:45Speaker 1: a guy open and thrown and got intercepted in the end.
- 14:47Speaker 1: So and the Baggies end up winning I think eighteen
- 14:49Speaker 1: to nine. They tacked on the field goal. Yeah yeah, exactly,
- 14:53Speaker 1: all right. And then the next year, ninety four was
- 14:56Speaker 1: and it was thirty years ago, John mcvick saying we
- 14:59Speaker 1: will not kick off to Leland McElroy. They kicked off
- 15:04Speaker 1: to Leland McElroy and he brought it back for a touchdown.
- 15:06Speaker 1: He's still going, yeah yeah, but but but.
- 15:10Speaker 3: He's like, he's he'sn Caldwell. Now he's still running.
- 15:12Speaker 2: That's tried. He's still run.
- 15:13Speaker 1: And then then and then the one other one that
- 15:15Speaker 1: comes to minds the very next year was nineteen ninety five.
- 15:19Speaker 2: Now that was not Thanksgiving. It moved to him.
- 15:21Speaker 1: It was that final game in Southwest Conference history, Texas
- 15:24Speaker 1: and Texas A and M and the long sixteen.
- 15:27Speaker 2: To six very good.
- 15:28Speaker 1: You remember that, you remember and and James Brown had
- 15:30Speaker 1: a badly sprained ankle and Ricky went for like one
- 15:34Speaker 1: sixty five in that game.
- 15:36Speaker 4: We were talking movie staking Craig correct me, but was
- 15:39Speaker 4: that not the last game on the turf and they
- 15:42Speaker 4: were gonna put grass in?
- 15:44Speaker 3: Or was it last game on the grass? They're gonna
- 15:46Speaker 3: put turf.
- 15:47Speaker 1: No, no, no, you had it right the first time.
- 15:48Speaker 1: It was on the carpet, and and and so it
- 15:52Speaker 1: was over and they we're going to tear it up. Well,
- 15:53Speaker 1: log worn fans and cheerleaders run onto the field celebration
- 15:57Speaker 1: and the Aggie Corps got really upset with it. They
- 16:01Speaker 1: didn't draw swords like they did on the SMU Cheerleader
- 16:03Speaker 1: back in eighty, but they was like, so we could
- 16:06Speaker 1: see it from up top. There were some punching of
- 16:08Speaker 1: some guys and grabbing girls by the hair and it
- 16:11Speaker 1: was just crazy. And then security came in and tried
- 16:14Speaker 1: to break it up, and the core guys were still
- 16:15Speaker 1: doing that, and I think I referred to it as
- 16:17Speaker 1: paramilitarism run amuck.
- 16:20Speaker 2: On that deal.
- 16:21Speaker 1: But the point is, the point about all of this
- 16:23Speaker 1: is that this rivalry, which is being renewed on Saturday
- 16:28Speaker 1: night in college station, you got a chance to experience it,
- 16:32Speaker 1: even from the other side one season as an Aggie
- 16:34Speaker 1: baseball broadcaster, so you know how they feel about all this.
- 16:37Speaker 3: Oh absolutely, And there was a real break for me
- 16:40Speaker 3: to do Aggie baseball.
- 16:41Speaker 4: I was doing Samuston State and I got a chance
- 16:43Speaker 4: to go over and do the Aggies and that's when
- 16:44Speaker 4: they had a great team in eighty nine with Chuck
- 16:46Speaker 4: Knoblock and John Byington and those guys. So I got
- 16:49Speaker 4: to see that and I actually applied for the AGGI
- 16:51Speaker 4: play by play job and didn't get it, and Craig
- 16:53Speaker 4: it was a blessing, it really was, because I ended
- 16:56Speaker 4: up in Austin a couple months later at KOBJ and
- 16:59Speaker 4: of course that started my time with Long Warns.
- 17:01Speaker 3: And of course you came in.
- 17:02Speaker 4: So you know, sometimes when you really wish for something
- 17:06Speaker 4: and it doesn't work out, it works out better. And
- 17:08Speaker 4: that's exactly what happened with me. No offense to any
- 17:10Speaker 4: of my A and M's friends or college station friends,
- 17:13Speaker 4: but you know it could have worked out better for
- 17:15Speaker 4: me as they ended up in Austin.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, And I've learned lessons over the years
- 17:19Speaker 1: and have lots of friends over in the Brass Valley,
- 17:22Speaker 1: and so I've learned to appreciate their passion for the
- 17:25Speaker 1: rivalry and everything as well.
- 17:27Speaker 4: So I in fact, Andrew Monico, Yeah, because you know
- 17:30Speaker 4: the radio guy now who's got that job at twenty eighteen,
- 17:33Speaker 4: used to work for the Spurs. We worked together for
- 17:35Speaker 4: a number of years and really a really good guy.
- 17:37Speaker 4: And I'm really happy he's in that position because he's
- 17:40Speaker 4: perfect for that job. He's a real loyal, passionate guy,
- 17:43Speaker 4: good play by play guy, and a perfect fit for them.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I had him on the show on Monday, and
- 17:48Speaker 1: he's yesterday. He's out in Vegas, and so we had
- 17:51Speaker 1: a lot of fun talking about all that. Hey, it's
- 17:54Speaker 1: always good to visit with you. I'm glad you get
- 17:57Speaker 1: to have Thanksgiving and home with Jerry and Carl. And
- 18:01Speaker 1: best wishes also to Eric Out and salt Lake, and
- 18:04Speaker 1: I know we'll catch up again on down the road.
- 18:06Speaker 2: I appreciate you taking it for you, Dave, you and Crag.
- 18:08Speaker 3: I've been trying to get you and Linda to dinner,
- 18:09Speaker 3: but it's impossible with our schedules. It will happen. One day,
- 18:13Speaker 3: it'll happen.
- 18:14Speaker 2: It will definitely happen. Thank you, sir.
- 18:16Speaker 1: Appreciate you got it. That's Bill Schoning, this first play
- 18:20Speaker 1: by play voice. And until we did a lot of
- 18:22Speaker 1: games together, football and men's basketball. There are stories we
- 18:26Speaker 1: could tell, so many other stories, and then there's some
- 18:29Speaker 1: stories we can't tell. Probably good idea that we don't
- 18:33Speaker 1: it sound like a podcast is needed. Yes, Storytime, We've
- 18:36Speaker 1: talked about that at time or two. Maybe all Right
- 18:38Speaker 1: Up Next is inconceivable for Thanksgiving on sports Radio AM
- 18:43Speaker 1: thirteen Under the Zone.
