- 0:00Good morning , market watchers !
- 0:02I am Penny Pincher , and you are listening to Spy Trader .
- 0:06It is exactly 6 am on Sunday , April 26th , 2026 , here in the Pacific time zone .
- 0:14I hope you have your coffee ready because we are staring down what might be the most critical week for the markets all year .
- 0:21We are coming off a historic moment where the S&P 500 recently broke through that 7,000 level , but as we look toward Monday , it feels like the market is walking a bit of a tightrope .
- 0:34This week is what many are calling a triplethreat of market catalysts : we have a Federal Reserve interest rate decision , a massive wave of megacap tech earnings , and highstakes inflation and GDP data .
- 0:48All of this is happening while global energy prices are surging due to the ongoing conflict with Iran .
- 0:54It is definitely a week to stay sharp .
- 0:57Let's start with the big picture .
- 0:59We are seeing a market with robust earnings growth of about 15 percent , but valuations are high .
- 1:05With a forward pricetoearnings ratio of nearly 21 , there is basically zero margin for error .
- 1:12If a company misses , the market is likely to be unforgiving .
- 1:17Our first major focus is the Federal Open Market Committee meeting .
- 1:21Right now , interest rates are sitting between 3.5 and 3.75 percent .
- 1:27The expectation for Wednesday , April 29th , is that the Fed will hold rates steady .
- 1:33However , the real story will be Jerome Powell’s commentary .
- 1:38We are looking for what analysts call a hawkish hold .
- 1:42This means that if inflation , specifically that Core PCE number , stays sticky around 3.1 percent , we might see rates stay high through the rest of 2026 .
- 1:54Speaking of data , Wednesday also brings us the Q1 2026 GDP advance estimate .
- 2:01We are expecting a modest 1.2 percent growth , but if that number drops below 1 percent , people are going to start talking about stagflation again — that is the nasty combination of low growth and high inflation .
- 2:14On Thursday , we get the Core PCE Price Index .
- 2:18This is the Fed's favorite inflation gauge , and it will show us just how much the 105dollarabarrel oil shock is starting to hit consumer prices .
- 2:28Now , let’s talk about the tech titans .
- 2:31This week , five of the Magnificent 7 companies are reporting , representing nearly 30 percent of the S&P 500 .
- 2:39On Wednesday after the bell , we get Microsoft , Alphabet , Meta , and Amazon .
- 2:45Then Apple follows on Thursday .
- 2:47The market is looking for proof .
- 2:49We have seen massive spending on artificial intelligence , and now investors want to see if that is actually turning into highmargin software revenue .
- 2:59If Microsoft or Alphabet show anything less than doubledigit cloud growth , it could be a rough ride for the Invesco QQQ Trust .
- 3:08Outside of tech , keep an eye on Energy and Financials .
- 3:12Chevron reports on Friday , and with Brent crude at 105 dollars , energy is really the best hedge against the geopolitical risks in the Middle East and the Strait of Hormuz .
- 3:24We also have Mastercard and Visa reporting , which will give us a pulse check on whether the American consumer is starting to buckle under these high interest rates .
- 3:34So , what should we be doing with our portfolios ?
- 3:37For your core holdings , I recommend maintaining exposure through the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF , ticker symbol VOO , or the SPY .
- 3:46With 180 companies in the S&P 500 reporting this week , individual stock risk is high .
- 3:54VOO provides stable exposure to the broader 15 percent earnings growth trend while diluting the impact if one giant misses .
- 4:02For tactical growth , you can look at the Invesco QQQ Trust , but consider setting tight stoplosses .
- 4:09The Nasdaq has had a historic winning streak , but Alphabet and Meta are facing execution concerns .
- 4:15If AI productivity gains are verified on Wednesday , QQQ could surge toward new highs , but it will be the hardest hit if results are soft .
- 4:25On the defensive side , it is time to increase your weight in gold and healthcare .
- 4:30I like SPDR Gold Shares , or GLD , as an essential hedge against the oil price spikes .
- 4:36For healthcare , the Health Care Select Sector SPDR , or XLV , offers a safe haven with stable earnings .
- 4:43Eli Lilly , ticker LLY , reports on Thursday and continues to benefit from the massive weightloss drug tailwind .
- 4:52Finally , for fixed income , look at the iShares 20plus Year Treasury Bond ETF , ticker TLT , if the 10year yield hits 4.5 percent .
- 5:01If the Fed signals they have reached their terminal rate despite the oil shock , TLT will benefit as yields stabilize .
- 5:09To sum it up : it is a highstakes week .
- 5:11Watch QQQ for the tech story , XLV and Eli Lilly for defensive resilience , and use GLD as your insurance .
- 5:21Stay disciplined , and I will see you back here for the next update .
