- 0:003 lifelong friends, 6 trusty balls and endless NFL ticks.
- 0:05Welcome to Three Guys 6 Balls NFL Podcast.
- 0:08Hello everybody, welcome to episode 57 of Three Guys 6
- 0:11Balls. I am unfortunately your host
- 0:14Today I will hear for the first time.
- 0:17Long time, long time listener, first time caller.
- 0:19It seems like Avery David Grass. How you doing, Avery?
- 0:22I'm good, I'm good, happy to be back.
- 0:25Truly glad to have you. Some idiot unfortunately
- 0:28approved Jill's vacation time during any week that we record,
- 0:32which happens to be 52 weeks of the year.
- 0:34I know who did that, but Jill's off celebrating some somebody's
- 0:39birthday. I think it's a sister in
- 0:46Whatever, David, every grass large news in your world, me or
- 0:51you, Who's going first here? You can go ahead.
- 0:54I feel like you should go first here.
- 0:58Your boy got engaged. Yeah, that's very exciting.
- 1:03What's his name? Derek.
- 1:10That is actually just a joke. For anyone watching this,
- 1:14whoever does watch this, this is the first time I've publicly
- 1:17said that It's not on my Instagram, it's not on my
- 1:20Facebook, Not that I ever really go on either.
- 1:23But yeah. So for all the three people,
- 1:26four people that listen, you heard it here first.
- 1:28I'm an engaged man and the wedding will be sooner rather
- 1:33than later because we're not about this waiting life.
- 1:36So. Well, and you're in your 30s and
- 1:38so your eggs are drying up, so you got to get my eggs.
- 1:41My eggs never dropped, my balls did, but the eggs stayed
- 1:45wherever they were. Fair enough.
- 1:49Listen, apparently we're supposed to talk football.
- 1:52Joe's not here, right? So, like, we can do whatever we
- 1:54want to do. What's he going to do?
- 1:55Tell us? No, he's going to do Corrales
- 1:57back. Corrales back into being on
- 1:59topic. He.
- 2:00Can't do anything. He can't do anything.
- 2:03This is going to be episode 57. The unusual episode will be the
- 2:06title of this one. It will go straight into the
- 2:09cutting room floor the entire time.
- 2:12Now, unfortunately, it is near 7:00 PM Pacific Standard Time
- 2:17here while we're recording a bit later than normal and I don't
- 2:20have very long, so this will already be a truncated episode.
- 2:22So I guess we just jump right in.
- 2:24I'm going to start off with a question like Joe likes to.
- 2:27I think this has been a question we've asked before or Joe's
- 2:29asked before on this show. I'm going to re ask it.
- 2:32What to you? Avery makes a franchise
- 2:34quarterback. I know where this is leading,
- 2:37but I, I want to say I, I think there's a lot of rubrics for
- 2:42success that you could look at here.
- 2:44Absolutely. I feel like ask that question
- 2:48one more time so I make sure I say it right.
- 2:51What to you Avery makes a franchise quarterback?
- 2:54Being able to win with the roster you've been given.
- 2:59OK. And so I will take your answer
- 3:03and and that is a wonderful feed into my follow up question.
- 3:06How so if if the ultimate success is winning the Super
- 3:10Bowl, how long after reaching that success do you have to ride
- 3:16that success, right? So if you like Peyton Manning
- 3:19when he wanted at the Colts, he continued to be successful at
- 3:23the Colts and eventually had neck surgery and they said, hey,
- 3:26we're going to go a different direction.
- 3:28OK, So that's that's making an extreme example.
- 3:30But how long after reaching that pinnacle?
- 3:32Like, like for instance, such another example, let's take
- 3:36Patrick Mahomes. Let's say he doesn't win 1.
- 3:39He won one three years ago, four years ago now.
- 3:42It can't have been that long, truly.
- 3:44He was at 1-2 years ago against the Eagles.
- 3:47How long did the Chiefs give him until they say, hey, we need to
- 3:51move on and find somebody else? I mean, we can't possibly
- 3:54quantify that, right? No, Oh, I would say really it's
- 3:59just with the quarterback. He is still, I would, I would
- 4:02argue the quarterback. I mean, I guess depending on the
- 4:05era of football that you're playing in general is, is the
- 4:10most important player you have on your team.
- 4:12There are important players on the team.
- 4:16But if you had, if you wanted to have the best of any position on
- 4:21your team, I would assume quarterback would be the 1 you
- 4:23would want to have the best of. That being said, I feel like,
- 4:27you know, there are times, you know, Joe Burrow and the
- 4:29Bengals, it's like, look, Joe Burrows got the goods.
- 4:32But clearly everyone can see this team is not where it needs
- 4:35to be. And so they're not going to put
- 4:38as much pressure on him to win. Because even then, if you win,
- 4:41maybe you make the playoffs maybe, and then you don't go
- 4:45anywhere 'cause you're playing teams that have a complete
- 4:47roster. So I think for the most part
- 4:50it's it's more of a matter of are you an impediment to the
- 4:53team? And I feel like sometimes the
- 4:55barometer for how a quarterback is doing is based on actual fans
- 5:00who watch the games, who keep tabs, usually the ones, and
- 5:04sometimes quarterbacks have more leeway than others.
- 5:07But the ones that are saying we need to get the pieces around
- 5:10this quarterback, those are usually the quarterbacks that
- 5:13are like doing their job and maybe a little bit more, but
- 5:16there's other pieces that just aren't there.
- 5:18That being said, only one quarterback can win the Super
- 5:21Bowl every year. And so no matter what, I mean,
- 5:24you get Peyton Manning, he won two Super Bowls and it took him
- 5:2820 years to do that. You got Drew Brees, he won one
- 5:31Super Bowl. Aaron Rodgers, he went to, how
- 5:33many did he win? One.
- 5:35Just one. Just one.
- 5:37Yeah, one with just one Packers. Now The thing is, is the rest,
- 5:41those three guys in particular with a total of 4 Super Bowls,
- 5:46we're not looking at them as the, and those guys are in.
- 5:50I mean, they're all Hall of Farmers for sure.
- 5:51And they're all in talks for, you know, some of the greatest.
- 5:55Now, they're not the greatest, but some of the greatest,
- 5:57Definitely. Generationally.
- 5:59Nearly won four Super Bowls combined Out of how many
- 6:02seasons? 40 more.
- 6:05More, maybe. Probably more.
- 6:06Oh, more for sure. Yeah, between the four, between
- 6:09the four of them, More. But between the three, Manning,
- 6:12Breeze and Rogers, But you look at that and it's like, OK, we're
- 6:17looking at statistics now. When you're looking at those
- 6:21guys, you're looking at statistics, you're looking at
- 6:23MVPS, you're looking at what they did as far as just prolific
- 6:27play. So when it comes down to the
- 6:29Super Bowl, it's like, well, we give them a pass because
- 6:33statistically they did great. They did great.
- 6:37Statistically, OK, statistically leading to what?
- 6:42New meaning for individual play? No one cares about that.
- 6:45If you're a fan of a team, you want a Super Bowl.
- 6:48But anyway, I'm going to leave it right there because I feel
- 6:50like this. Is you are, I keep, I keep
- 6:54teeing up balls and you keep crushing them out of the park.
- 6:57And just like this one, statistically and Super Bowl
- 7:00wise, we have a quarterback here whose team is unwilling to
- 7:04commit to long term. And I don't think they're wrong
- 7:07for doing it. Jalen Hurts, quarterback for the
- 7:10current quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 7:12Some execs from the Eagles have come out and said on record,
- 7:15it's been talked about extensively and it's always been
- 7:18executive sources, right? So no one's naming names, no one
- 7:21saying who is saying it. But enough people, enough NFL
- 7:25insiders have talked about it to where it's like, OK, well, this
- 7:27must have some legitimacy to it. They've come out and said that
- 7:31they are not even thinking about talking about contract
- 7:35extensions with Jalen Hertz until he finishes this year.
- 7:38This year is his last year of guaranteed money.
- 7:41He is contracted through 28, I think through 20 through this
- 7:45season, next season and the season after, I believe is his
- 7:47full contract. But he's only guaranteed money
- 7:50through this year. I think the other two years are
- 7:51voidable years. And so if you are Jalen Hertz,
- 7:56who is Super Bowl winner, won't once been there twice.
- 8:00I think it's how that goes. And yet your team is still not
- 8:03willing to commit to you long term.
- 8:06I think he might be the only case I can remember where we've
- 8:09had this level of, I don't know about this guy.
- 8:13Even though he continues to take you continuously, takes you to
- 8:17the highest level, even when they don't win the division,
- 8:19he's taking you deep into the playoffs, if not all the way to
- 8:22the Super Bowl. Yeah, I, I think that.
- 8:24I mean, I think Jalen Hurts. He's not he's not that fantasy
- 8:28quarterback that's going to give you, you know, Lamar Jackson
- 8:31numbers, Cam Newton, rookie season numbers.
- 8:34He's he's going to win you games.
- 8:38And it was the same thing last season and the season before
- 8:40that, this season even more so, where it was just like, dude,
- 8:44it's like he's not even putting up starting quarterback numbers,
- 8:48you know, in fantasy, yet they're still winning.
- 8:50They're sneaking it out. They're tush pushing their way
- 8:53into wins, which I mean, really it's like, yeah, I mean, a
- 8:56regular season win is a regular season win.
- 8:58OK, gets you closer to the Super Bowl.
- 9:00But it's it's really like, is this strategy going to win you a
- 9:03Super Bowl? And I don't think, I don't think
- 9:05that was really the case. It was it was frustrating for
- 9:08every team that played them because they knew it was coming
- 9:10and they couldn't do anything to stop it.
- 9:12And Jalen Hurts didn't have to throw it as much.
- 9:15However, that being said, he's not throwing it as much.
- 9:18OK, well, AJ Brown's not getting the ball.
- 9:20You're creating an issue there. You know it is.
- 9:24It is creating a lot of issues. You got him upset, You got fans
- 9:27upset that it's not getting to him.
- 9:30If they do lose a game, even if it's a winning strategy to not
- 9:33be throwing it to him, you now get blamed and say, well, it's
- 9:36because you're not throwing it to A.J.
- 9:38Brown. So I see this is on in one
- 9:41sense, I see the Eagles as like, you know, hey, you can do what
- 9:44you want. If you think this is smart, if
- 9:45you think it's smart to to to escalate this drama with your
- 9:50franchise quarterback just being basically saying like, yeah,
- 9:54we're going to wait and see. We don't have that loyalty to
- 9:57you, but to to me, I see it as like, look, OK, if we're talking
- 10:02about winning games here, I'm winning you games.
- 10:05If, if you want me to go out and put on a show, if you want me to
- 10:08go out there and just throw for 400 yards a game, you know, 3
- 10:12touchdowns, 1 rushing touchdown. Like if that's what it takes,
- 10:16then I guess I'll do that even if I don't win games.
- 10:19But he's winning games. And that's that's the problem.
- 10:22I mean, I think even in in the playoffs, he's I think I saw a
- 10:25stat he's like 20 some touchdowns, one or two
- 10:28interceptions. Like he's playing very, very
- 10:30well. And so the question is though,
- 10:32is that because it's so unusual, is that just has he just been
- 10:38coasting off of a good offense? You know, is he actually just
- 10:42doing what it takes to win? You know, because I think it's
- 10:46not like we're used to good statistical quarterbacks or
- 10:50synonymous with winning quarterbacks, you know?
- 10:53And so if he's not putting up the statistics and he's winning,
- 10:56surely it can't be him. It must be something else.
- 10:59But the reality is he has been winning.
- 11:01So it's, I mean, it really just comes down to him and his
- 11:05organization. But I see this is like, look, do
- 11:08you want wins or do you want stats?
- 11:10Because I'm giving you wins. Yeah, I don't disagree with
- 11:13that. The one thing I do disagree with
- 11:14is the Joe Burrow year a couple years ago, who was statistically
- 11:17the best quarterback, right? Most passing year at most size
- 11:20down. Their team just had six wins.
- 11:22So it's good. Statistical quarterbacks don't
- 11:24always turn into team wins. That our defense was atrocious.
- 11:28The Eagles cannot make that claim.
- 11:30Like the Eagles can't say, well, we had a bad defense and when it
- 11:35came down to it and their Super Bowl against the Chiefs, that
- 11:37they won. The Chiefs did everything they
- 11:39could to stop Saquon Barkley and then Kellen Moore said, OK,
- 11:43fine, we have a quarterback, he can throw the ball.
- 11:47And so they did that. They threw the ball well and he
- 11:50threw the ball very well in that Super Bowl.
- 11:52It's kind of like the opposite of Josh Allen.
- 11:53And I'm going to get a lot of hate for that, I know, but he he
- 11:56doesn't do well in the regular season.
- 11:58I don't know if Hertz has look in here real quick.
- 12:01And Hertz has never thrown for 4000 yards in one season in one
- 12:04regular season. He's got a couple 600 yard
- 12:07rushing seasons, but mostly it's in the in the fours and below.
- 12:10And so he he doesn't formwell, because he doesn't need to.
- 12:14That's not the game plan in the regular season and then in in
- 12:16the playoffs when he has to. Not that every time he has to,
- 12:20when he has to, he steps up and he goes out and wins the Super
- 12:23Bowl. He goes out and wins playoff
- 12:24games when he needs to. It's not Hertz's fault that they
- 12:28went and brought in Saquon Barkley, that they went and
- 12:31brought in. I mean, they drafted Devonta
- 12:34Smith, they brought brought in A.J.
- 12:36Brown from Tennessee. So they brought in all these
- 12:38good people. And then you brought in the
- 12:40best, one of the best running backs in the league was one of
- 12:42the best offensive lines late. OK, well, let's just round the
- 12:45ball. That's really successful.
- 12:46That's consistently successful over the course of the entire
- 12:49football. Like a history of it.
- 12:51At one point it was illegal to throw a forward pass.
- 12:53And if it was an incomplete pass after it was not illegal
- 12:55anymore. If it was an incomplete pass,
- 12:57that was a turnover. That's how far back that goes.
- 13:00And so it's just one of these. Why are we hating on a guy who
- 13:04is doing a system, doing things in the system incredibly well
- 13:09and proven well with two years ago, he won the Super Bowl and
- 13:14and you can't say well sequel Berkeley because he didn't.
- 13:17Berkeley did not win that Super Bowl for him.
- 13:19Hertz put the team on his back when he had to made the throws
- 13:21he needed to make. So I think all that being said
- 13:26to to to gas up Jalen Hurts, I think the Eagles are incredibly
- 13:31justified with this. We're not doing anything with
- 13:34this yet. We want to see how he does this
- 13:36year. So last question here on this,
- 13:38we move to our next topic. Do you think this is a prove it
- 13:41year for Jalen Hurts even though he won the Super Bowl 2 years
- 13:45ago? Yeah, I I would say so.
- 13:48In fact, if I was him, I mean, again, and this is assuming I
- 13:51understand the actual circumstances here, I would go
- 13:54to the coach and the front office and be and and say, what
- 13:57do you expect of me? Do you want me to win games or
- 14:01are you expecting me to put up stats?
- 14:04Like I want to know what I need to do for you to consider this a
- 14:08success. You know, if we want to run the
- 14:11ball, fine. He just seems like a guy who's
- 14:13instead of out there, you know, just making a lot of noise
- 14:15saying I'm not getting my pass and you know, A.J.
- 14:17Brown, I'm not getting my touches.
- 14:19I'm not getting my touches because he made a good point.
- 14:21If I don't get my touches, if I don't get my catches, if I don't
- 14:24get my yards, if I don't get my touchdowns, come the next
- 14:26contract, I'm going to get screwed.
- 14:29I don't care if that's on our game plan.
- 14:30This is my career. This is my livelihood we're
- 14:32talking about. And honestly, Jalen Hurts seems
- 14:36like the opposite where he's like, I'm just doing whatever it
- 14:38takes to help this team win. I'm doing what they ask of me.
- 14:42And it seems like he's getting penalized for it.
- 14:45So on one hand, it's it's kind of it's kind of sad to see this,
- 14:49but if I was him, I would go up and say, OK, then let then let's
- 14:53find out, you know, what it is. What, what will, you know,
- 14:56success look like for you? And I hope that, you know,
- 14:59honestly, kind of I hope that he does well.
- 15:01And then, you know, maybe some other team offers him a, a
- 15:04better contract later. I don't know.
- 15:06I mean, I guess you can't really offer to him while he's still
- 15:08got, you know, a couple years left in in Philly.
- 15:10But you know, come the next contracts, like, hey, I'm going
- 15:14to remember this, you know, like you guys are sliding me here.
- 15:17But at the same time, it's like, dude, you still got three years.
- 15:21Calm down like. I I selfishly, I can't help but
- 15:26saying from the Rams point of view, right, you've got one
- 15:28Goodyear of Matt Stafford left. Maybe you can squeeze out the
- 15:32second one. I mean people already thought
- 15:33that this year was a squeeze out year or this last year.
- 15:36We just had because he started the season and a lot of people
- 15:38forget this. There was talks that Jimmy G was
- 15:41going to start the season because Stafford had to hurt
- 15:44back. And so he he obviously it didn't
- 15:47happen that way. Stafford played the whole season
- 15:50played very well. One MVP, not bragging or
- 15:53anything. No big deal.
- 15:56But then then we move on and now we're at that this year and it
- 15:59feels like the Rams are going full in on winning the Super
- 16:02Bowl this year. And I think if they do or or if
- 16:05they get really close, I think that this that Stafford does
- 16:08ride off into the sunset take many style where he wins the
- 16:11Super Bowl and it ended in post game interview cracks a
- 16:14Budweiser and says, all right, that's it for me.
- 16:16I'm retiring. You see y'all later.
- 16:18And now we can't stop saying peg money.
- 16:19He's everywhere on ESPN. But anyway, where I was going
- 16:22with this was this is we. This will be Jalen Hertz's fifth
- 16:26sixth year in a row. I think every single year he has
- 16:30had a different offensive coordinator, which which we
- 16:33talked about and you can see it with the Bears, right?
- 16:35You saw it with the Bears last year.
- 16:37That coach does actually matter. I was big in the what difference
- 16:41does a coach make? And then I had egg all over my
- 16:44face when Ben Johnson took the bears way deeper than they
- 16:47should have gone. And so I, I think it really
- 16:49matters. They've got Shawn Mannion,
- 16:50Oregon State legends, Shawn Mannion and is our offensive
- 16:54coordinator this year. And so we'll see what happens,
- 16:56but I, I'm, I'm really interested to see how it goes.
- 17:00And, and I where I was going with this whole Rams take is
- 17:05that it's possible that, hey, some veteran quarterbacks are
- 17:09going to be on the open market like we saw this year with, with
- 17:12Joe Flacco and Kirk Cousins. There were others.
- 17:16Two, it was on the open market for a while.
- 17:18I mean, the the Tyler Murray, these guys were and and most of
- 17:21these guys ended up being linked back to the Rams of like, well,
- 17:24maybe they have them sit for a year, but I think we'll be in
- 17:26the same cycle next year with all right, who is who is going
- 17:30to stay on their team. Teams are so quick to move on
- 17:33from their players who don't give you immediate success or in
- 17:35this case, even when they have given you recent success of we
- 17:39just won the Super Bowl. Yeah, but but you didn't play
- 17:41well your Super Bowl year and you didn't play well your
- 17:44following your Super Bowl year. And so this year you have to
- 17:47play well. You're not going to hurt him
- 17:48anymore. Let's not forget Peyton Manning
- 17:50got benched multiple times the year they won that Super Bowl
- 17:54for none other than Brock Osweiler.
- 17:56OK, so so expecting these guys now.
- 17:58Peyton Manning had like 1000 years under his belt and four
- 18:02neck surgeries cancel. It's different circumstances.
- 18:04I'm not saying that that Jalen Hurts is Peyton Manning, but I'm
- 18:09just trying to relate true fact with with maybe maybe we need to
- 18:14give some reality here, but I don't know.
- 18:17Moving on. We're kind of Segway topic and
- 18:19then we're going to do our actual topic here.
- 18:21So the draft is at the end of this month.
- 18:22I think the draft starts in 23 days or something like that,
- 18:25right? The no 23 days would be the
- 18:2630th. Is it 13 days would be the 20th.
- 18:30So 14 days. That's not right.
- 18:33It doesn't matter. It starts on the 23rd of April.
- 18:35And so we are. It's the 23rd, right?
- 18:38It's the 23rd, then it's yeah, it's like 16 days.
- 18:42Draft day. Pardon my Google search.
- 18:47Yeah, April 23rd crushed it 16. 16 days.
- 18:50Yeah, so 16 days until the the draft day and it came out this
- 18:53last weekend and maybe today, maybe earlier, Fernando Mendoza
- 18:57is not attending. So potential number one pick,
- 19:01you had a consensus #1 pick Fernando Mendoza.
- 19:03Everyone hasn't gone to the Raiders, even though the Raiders
- 19:05just signed Kirk Cousins specifically.
- 19:10Yeah, Raiders just had Kirk Cousins, but they're still
- 19:12consensus #1 pick overall is Fernando Mendoza.
- 19:16It has come out that he is not going to attend the NFL drafts.
- 19:19He will be with his family in Miami.
- 19:21It was easier for him to spend and more important for him to
- 19:24spend his time with his family in Miami than it was he and his
- 19:26family all the way to Pittsburgh.
- 19:28Actually, probably more convenient too.
- 19:30And so any thoughts on this? I mean, it's kind of a non
- 19:32topic, but just just something to talk about.
- 19:34Yeah. Yeah, no, I, I think, yeah, I,
- 19:37I, I mean, it's a topic, but it, it's at the same time it's a non
- 19:41topic. I'm like, this guy can do
- 19:42whatever he wants. In fact, anything I see this is
- 19:45a green flag. It's like, oh, he's, he's
- 19:48deciding to move away from the glitz and glamour of, you know,
- 19:52being in the green room and having all the cameras on him
- 19:55and instead decides to spend it with his family.
- 19:58You know, it's the last time he's going to be with them for a
- 20:00while, you know, before, you know, moving to Vegas.
- 20:03Also, just going back to what you said earlier, I think Kirk
- 20:05Cousins and Fernando Mendoza is going to be awesome.
- 20:08I already thought that they seem very similar, just at least in,
- 20:12in terms of their facial structure and they're kind of
- 20:16family life like they all, they both seem very family oriented.
- 20:19Vegas does not seem like a great fit for either of them.
- 20:22But I think as long as they have each other's back.
- 20:24I think I think it'd be a really great fit.
- 20:27I'm excited to see it. I hope we get a video.
- 20:29So NFL is going to send a whole production crew down to Miami to
- 20:33be there right in in 2007 when Joe Thomas was picked, he was
- 20:38fishing and he's like, I'm not doing this whole thing.
- 20:41I'm going to go fishing. And he did.
- 20:42And the NFL sent a thing out and they were like, you can record
- 20:45me, but you're not coming on my boat.
- 20:46I don't actually know if they were on the boat or not.
- 20:48But Joe Thomas's draft day was spent fishing on the boat.
- 20:52And so Fernando Mendoza just doing it at his house.
- 20:54Nothing will be the George Pickens at his house photo with
- 20:57him. Where in the Bon Quava, the
- 20:59sheisty, if you will. I mean, nothing will ever beat
- 21:01that. So that and who is it?
- 21:05No Nikola Jokic who got drafted in the middle of a Taco Bell
- 21:09commercial. Just some some notable wonderful
- 21:12draft moments by some some all time players here.
- 21:16Not to Fernando Mendoza is an all time player, but you know
- 21:18who knows one day. OK, moving on.
- 21:20So we've got some more prospects to talk about because again, the
- 21:23draft is in 16 days notable here.
- 21:25Avery, just in case because you did miss it, Lee Hunter notable
- 21:30Lee Hunter Hager right here. Lee Hunter has moved down almost
- 21:33out of the top 100. I have not checked the recent
- 21:36rankings, but he was 808386 something last time we talked
- 21:40about it, so I feel pretty justified and continuously
- 21:43moving him down the list. So that was all I just wanted to
- 21:46get my Lee hunter hate and I don't see a little room for Lee
- 21:49hunter hate this week. So so there's that all right let
- 21:54me figure out how to share my screen.
- 21:56Our first guy up Hold on. Let me, I'm new to this whole
- 22:00hosting thing. All right, Can you see this?
- 22:03OK, I. Can.
- 22:05This is clutch, right? So our first guy up Colton Hood,
- 22:09cornerback out of Tennessee, and for those who have done any
- 22:12amount of research on any Tennessee corner corners and you
- 22:15see somebody doing well on the field, it's Colton Hood.
- 22:17If you see somebody not on the field, that's German McCoy.
- 22:21So this is the guy from Tennessee that actually played
- 22:24all season and is still rated below the other guy who's been
- 22:28out for 16 months with an ACL tear every Thoughts on Colton
- 22:32Hood? Well, I, I think he's great.
- 22:34I guess the only thing really that I noticed is just his
- 22:36hands, Just, I think he might be getting a little too overzealous
- 22:41with his hands, getting called for penalties and stuff.
- 22:44I think besides that, I think he's very well-rounded.
- 22:47I think he's just solid. I think it really just comes
- 22:51down to just those little things.
- 22:52Hopefully coaching can, you know, kind of get that out or at
- 22:55least hide it well enough from the refs.
- 23:00Just gets really handsy. But again, I think he's very
- 23:03sharp. He reacts quickly to the ball.
- 23:05Then yeah, unlike McCoy, he's actually been out there proving
- 23:08it so. Yeah, I agree.
- 23:10Incredibly aggressive jam corner, 6 foot tall, 193 lbs.
- 23:14He's had a good frame, he's got elite closing speed, he's A-44
- 23:17speed kind of guy and he will only continue to improve.
- 23:19He only started one. He's only got one year of
- 23:23starting experience in college. He sat behind Travis Hunter at
- 23:27Colorado, transferred to Tennessee after sitting out of
- 23:30the year before transferring to Colorado.
- 23:32A red shirt in the year. Excuse me?
- 23:34My only issue with him is that his best coverage comes in 10
- 23:37yards, right where you can get your hands on the guy and you
- 23:40can redirect them and you can really be on and like glue.
- 23:44In the NFL, that drops down to 5 yards.
- 23:46It's 5 yards in college, but they play.
- 23:47A softer thing with the NFL is that it is a receiver's game and
- 23:51so receivers are going to get that call and so he's going to
- 23:55have to tone down his aggressive playstyle, which is not going to
- 23:58benefit him at all. He had a significant amount of
- 24:01penalties last year because of his aggressive playstyle, and
- 24:05that's only going to get worse as he moves in the NFL because
- 24:08they call it so tight. And so corners have the hardest
- 24:11job in the game behind quarterbacks personally to where
- 24:15they have to do everything the offense is doing as they're
- 24:18doing it without knowing what they're doing.
- 24:20But they also can't make any contact.
- 24:22He does get his head around well, receiver in high school.
- 24:25And so he high points the ball really well and gets up to the
- 24:285050 balls and wins a lot of them because of his aggressive
- 24:31play style. I just think that he's going to
- 24:34have to really work on that in the NFL because of how tight
- 24:38they call these receiver corner matchups.
- 24:42Yeah, it's where there's only two of us.
- 24:44I'm waiting for a third opinion here.
- 24:45Yeah, Joel, Yeah. Joel, what you have to say?
- 24:49All right, Cool. Glad you're here.
- 24:50Cool. I'm enjoying the beach in
- 24:51Southern California. Yeah, that is actually where
- 24:54he's at. That's what he sounds like too.
- 24:57That's exactly what he sounds like.
- 24:59OK, so our next guy here is Casey Concepcion, wide receiver,
- 25:03Texas A&M Avery. I mean, this guy, I mean, he
- 25:06started at NC State and I remember seeing him play.
- 25:09The thing is, I mean, he's got he's one of those shifty dudes.
- 25:12I'm curious to see how they'll use him in the NFLI.
- 25:16Feel like in college, both the Texas A&M, but it's more
- 25:19specifically at NC State when he was a tough guy to guard.
- 25:22But The thing is, most of his touches were behind the line of
- 25:26scrimmage, like plays directly set up for him.
- 25:29And The thing is, I mean, defenses knew it was coming and
- 25:32he's still getting around them. So I'm, I'm very curious to see,
- 25:37I feel like he could really find his niche if the right team
- 25:40picks him. That being said, I mean, I don't
- 25:44know. It's the reason I'm optimistic
- 25:47is because defenses knew it was coming and they still couldn't
- 25:52stop him. I think all I saw was just some,
- 25:54there's something Joel wrote it in here.
- 25:58This is the drops more specifically, and maybe it was
- 26:02just the drops where it's like he's not necessarily a go out
- 26:08and you know, in traffic, catch these balls to get the ball and
- 26:12then on a dime, you know, he's off to the races.
- 26:15So I would just, I'd be really curious to see how teams utilize
- 26:19this guy. Like you said, there's NC State
- 26:211st and went to Texas A and M3 years starter, I think 2:00 at
- 26:24NC State wanted Texas A&M and then all he did in those three
- 26:28years was lead the team and growth receptions and yards
- 26:31every single year. Even his freshman year where he
- 26:34did did not even start all the games.
- 26:35He played in all the games but he did not start them and so
- 26:39quickly became a starter at NC State and moved on to to bigger
- 26:42and better pastures. Last year he converted 10 of 15
- 26:45contested catches, which is great except for the fact that
- 26:48when you watch his film, he'll have wide open slant routes over
- 26:51the middle field in the end zone and it's almost like the moment
- 26:54it's too big for him. And like you said, he just
- 26:55dropped the ball uncontested catch.
- 26:58I noticed a lot of times that he was jumping like a slight round,
- 27:02creating a right in the hands and he would jump to catch it.
- 27:05And that's a real middle school stuff that you got to stop
- 27:07doing. But he finds the open zone,
- 27:09finds the hole in the zone very well.
- 27:12He only plays at 1 speed, which normally is a very good thing.
- 27:16As a receiver, you do want to change that speed up every once
- 27:19in a while. It's hard to double move when
- 27:21you don't have a slow down and speed back up.
- 27:24He doesn't have top end speed, so he just plays all out all the
- 27:28time. He's got a compact build, which
- 27:30limits his catch radius with physical corners around, but he
- 27:33does bring a physical edge that Bay lays his side and allows him
- 27:37to to get the ball when he needs to.
- 27:40Again, 10 to 15 contested catch opportunity wins this last
- 27:43season. So I I like I like what he's got
- 27:47going on a lot. We've had this is where our 6th,
- 27:495th, something like that wide receiver.
- 27:51We've talked about a lot of a lot of really good day one early
- 27:56day 2 wide receivers in the draft this year.
- 27:59It's it's a good year to need a receiver.
- 28:01It's a bad year to need a corner.
- 28:04So yeah, again, also a proven return specialist here.
- 28:09We've got written down He's got I think he had two point return
- 28:13touchdowns this last season, which two in one season is
- 28:16sounds like a little bit two in the season is actually quite a
- 28:18bit for point returns. And so he if you bring him in
- 28:22and you don't have room as a receiver in your line up, he can
- 28:25play special teams, kick return, point return, because again,
- 28:28he's only got 1 speak. When he gets the ball, he just
- 28:30runs full out. It may not be as fast as as
- 28:33everybody else, but it is all out every single time.
- 28:36It's shifty, very shifty. Anything else?
- 28:42All right, let's move on to our next guy.
- 28:44We're going to chase this one down with Chase Besantes.
- 28:48Besantes. I believe.
- 28:51You know what? I usually start.
- 28:53Yeah, I usually start with offensive lineman.
- 28:55I'd like it to be noted this is our second offensive guard,
- 28:59right? We talked about one guard so
- 29:01far. This is our.
- 29:02Secondly. Yes, we have also only talked
- 29:06well Emmanuel pregnant. No.
- 29:10Oh yeah, pregnant. Yep.
- 29:12Yeah, pregnant from Oregon. He gets honored by mentioned.
- 29:14He was talked about on the show. Your cousin Gavin did mention
- 29:18him, Seahawks state, and he would pick 31.
- 29:21I don't hate that. He is actually third on most
- 29:24people's guard lists overall. Chase Bazante started as a
- 29:28tackle and they moved him inside to guard, which I think was an
- 29:31incredibly wise choice. I would like to talk about the
- 29:34bad and then the good for bad first, good second and then to
- 29:37summarize at the very end here, Problem is he's got a bit of
- 29:39shorter arms. His hands arrived late and with
- 29:42shorter arms, that's really that's really bad.
- 29:44He is not very technically refined for injury rushers.
- 29:47He's got his hips open too early in past sets he expose exposing
- 29:52a softer inside shoulder. He's 6 foot 5 and his pad level
- 29:56stands way too tall. Often his first contact is is
- 29:59very inconsistent and often times too high.
- 30:01And when you're getting these different tackles, even
- 30:04linebackers who are coming in hot and heavy ride at the snap.
- 30:07If your pad level is too high, you're just going to get
- 30:09bullied. Additionally, the last three
- 30:11seasons he had 19 total penalties, which when you're
- 30:14talking 5 and 10 yard penalties, especially if they're holding
- 30:17penalties, those are drive killers.
- 30:18That's the very common thing that people say.
- 30:20And so if you're getting holding penalties because you're getting
- 30:22beat now you're first and ten goes to 1st and 20 and it's
- 30:25like, all right, well, we're behind the we're way behind the
- 30:28sticks and we have to play a lot of makeup.
- 30:30Now the good here. He has an incredible short area
- 30:33quickness and and and very fast foot speed for interior lineman,
- 30:37which is why they moved him from tackle in the guard.
- 30:40He can get underneath the fenders to despite his height to
- 30:44win leverage early. He just does he does it
- 30:46inconsistently. He again he can't.
- 30:48He has a balanced path protection set and can mirror
- 30:51tackle as well, good core strength and he has a good lower
- 30:55center of gravity when he needs to.
- 30:57But mostly he's an effective puller and move blocker.
- 30:59That's his biggest thing is that he's better in the run game
- 31:01because he he's so fast and athletic that he's he's
- 31:05incredibly effective in the run game where he's pulling and
- 31:08moving out and setting an edge on the outside for the run to
- 31:11open up. He stays active and attentive,
- 31:14which when you're a pulling guard and you get to your end
- 31:17and there's nobody there, it's hard to OK, well, I guess job
- 31:20done, but he stays actively intensive.
- 31:23And then so summary here is a team who drafts Bazan says he
- 31:27who can compete for a starting spot right out of the gate.
- 31:30His combine confirmed his athleticism.
- 31:32People questioned it when he was at the combine.
- 31:34He confirmed it, which that has him shot up the draft boards a
- 31:38bit. His technique needs significant
- 31:40refinement. His hand timing needs a lot of
- 31:42work and leverage, consistency, but the physical tools and
- 31:45competitive makeup are there. Yeah, he fits.
- 31:47He fits best in the system that values movement and physicality
- 31:50over just pure anchor strength because he's going to be in past
- 31:52that's and he didn't need help here, have to shift, shift pass
- 31:56walking to his side more often than not.
- 31:58I didn't have a lot of room there, but anything to add?
- 32:01No, I, I thought he was from the the tape I saw.
- 32:04I, I, I think just that the first point in the strengths
- 32:08that the active feet that allow him to mirror movement.
- 32:12I thought he did a really, really good job.
- 32:14I mean, I know he's got, you know, his physicals, you know,
- 32:18he's got short arms for someone of his size.
- 32:21That being said, I saw whether that's technique or talent, his
- 32:26ability to when he maybe gets overpowered to then adjust and
- 32:31basically neutralize the pass rusher, the run, just the edge I
- 32:37think is really good. I, from what I saw, he seemed
- 32:41like a solid guard. I mean, I and, and to be fair,
- 32:44I'm not too familiar or experienced with some of these
- 32:49physical traits like hand size, arm length and how that, you
- 32:53know, equates to, you know, NFL success.
- 32:55I hear that, you know, it is very important and I believe it.
- 32:58But from what I saw, he seemed like a solid guard.
- 33:02And and what I mean by that is not a liability, which is
- 33:06really, I mean, to me, I mean, yeah, he had one sack allowed.
- 33:10I guess the penalties do worry me a little bit.
- 33:12That being said, I thought he looked solid and I'm not a great
- 33:16evaluator of these interior alignment.
- 33:19When comparing him to the only other guard we've talked about,
- 33:24Van Gogh wanna. I think I crashed that.
- 33:27I think I truly, I said that multiple times last week and
- 33:30butchered every time. I actually think I got that one.
- 33:33That's my red flag, right? Like I think I spoke well,
- 33:37chances are I butchered that. I'm not going to try again.
- 33:40The Penn State Guard when comparing the two of them, it is
- 33:44there is a pretty large gap. Like you've got a mid round, mid
- 33:48first round guy. Well, he's he's well above he's
- 33:52when you drafted well below his talent level, then go on a he is
- 33:57he is like truly top ten talent level and just a value of guard
- 34:02is not that high, especially this year.
- 34:04People team excuse me, teams value tackles way higher and so
- 34:08did did they they gap between the two I think is almost as
- 34:11large as the gap between the two the first two Titans and I think
- 34:15it's it's not as big, but it's almost as big.
- 34:17We've really talked about 1 running back so far in all of
- 34:21our players and so obviously the gap there is pretty large.
- 34:24I think that the chase here, I, I, he's going to be great.
- 34:29He's going to be an absolute solid piece.
- 34:30Like I said, he couldn't. He will compete for a starting
- 34:33job right from training camp, right after he gets drafted.
- 34:36He's going to show up, He's going to do the work.
- 34:38There's just a lot of refinement that needs to happen to be
- 34:41consistently A consistently solid piece of the next level.
- 34:45Because the what you don't want is your I think it's Sam.
- 34:49Nope. What is it, Bradford, Whatever
- 34:52the Bradford guy from Seattle is, is that there are literal
- 34:57web page, not web pages, but Facebook pages, profiles and
- 35:00Instagram profiles made just to talk how bad this guy is at at
- 35:05at at pass blocking. And that's the thing with Guard
- 35:08is they focus so much on run blocking that their past
- 35:12blocking often suffers because they want them to pull them.
- 35:14They want them to do this, they want them to do that.
- 35:16And so it's, well, I'm going to work on all this and then this
- 35:18is going to be a huge gap in my knowledge.
- 35:22And, and so having, having one guy you can do both is
- 35:25incredibly rare. And I, I think Chase has a good
- 35:29enough forecasting and has shown improvement every single year.
- 35:33And so I, I think he, he will get there.
- 35:35It's just he's not there currently.
- 35:39OK, let's talk about our next guy, Caleb Banks, defensive
- 35:44tackle, Florida. Hey, Ryan, you start again.
- 35:49Yeah, I to me, I mean, I mean, well, I don't even think it's
- 35:53debatable. This guy has some of the
- 35:56craziest, what do you call it? Measures measurables of anybody.
- 36:02I mean, I, I think in the combine he was like 95th
- 36:05percentile at least in like every single category.
- 36:09Dude just has troubles with the fundamentals, like just making
- 36:12those tackles. And so it's just interesting
- 36:15that like, I mean, it's basically his pro day in the
- 36:19combine that is, that is keeping him this high up.
- 36:22But I, I, I don't know if again, not a not an NF, I'm not a
- 36:27trainer. I don't know how easy it is.
- 36:30How how I guess coachable it is to be able to teach a player at
- 36:37this point in time these skill sets because he's got all the
- 36:41tools. And I feel like most of these
- 36:43guys, whether it's defensive tackles or lineman, it just
- 36:46seems like the guys with the shorter arms have the mental
- 36:50abilities and the guys with the longer arms don't have those
- 36:54mental abilities. And it's just like Kate can't,
- 36:56well, you can't change the physical, but can you change the
- 36:59mental? You know this too many arm
- 37:02tackles, poor finishing angles right there, fatigues easily
- 37:06sees effectiveness decline, plays way too tall with high pad
- 37:10level. This to me just sounds like it
- 37:13just sounds like I'm watching the blind side, but on the other
- 37:16side of the line. Just like, hey, this guy who's
- 37:18got all the tools, like somebody, some white woman needs
- 37:22to come over and show him how to how to play the position.
- 37:26Did you get in the? Car wreck and get his hand over
- 37:28really fast. Yeah.
- 37:30That being said, you know, if you've got a a defensive line
- 37:34that's already got some scary guys on it, I'll bet this guy
- 37:37would would be a great fit there.
- 37:39It's just a matter of, you know, can you get him ready?
- 37:42You know, I, I don't know if I would want to rely on this guy,
- 37:45but having another, you know, a 1-2 punch with him I think would
- 37:49be sweet. Yeah, I I don't disagree.
- 37:52I would like to add, he was a four year player in college.
- 37:56He was at Louisville for a year and transferred to Florida in
- 37:5923, played in Florida 2324 and then was played 25.
- 38:04But he had a foot injury that required surgery.
- 38:07And so I've got I've got 2 words here that are going to scare you
- 38:09as a as a basketball fan. Greg Oden, right, all the
- 38:15potential in the world. I mean, he's Kayla Banks is not
- 38:18being rated near as high, but incredibly athletic.
- 38:21Understands maybe I don't know specifically, but I think
- 38:25understands the concept of football just doesn't know how
- 38:27to play defensive line. And when you are 6 foot six, 330
- 38:32lbs. If you're already having foot
- 38:35surgery at age 23, your power as a as a offensive and defensive
- 38:42lineman, your power is driven through your feet.
- 38:46You need your feet to be the anchor between you and the
- 38:49ground. Obviously that is a that is a no
- 38:51doubt statement, but it is it is more so with offensive and
- 38:55defensive line because not only like a receiver, you're moving
- 38:58yourself as a as a corner, you're moving yourself as an
- 39:01offensive defensive line, in this case defensive tackle.
- 39:04You are trying to move yourself and another 300 plus pound human
- 39:10through your feet. And if you're already having
- 39:13foot surgery, that is a huge red flag to me.
- 39:17The size matters. Pardon me.
- 39:21The, the, the measurables here matter when you're talking about
- 39:27foot surgery and ankle surgery and knee surgery when you are
- 39:30moving other humans like this. And so I, like you said you
- 39:36really like this thing says here.
- 39:37He's incredibly athletic. He just has no idea how to play
- 39:40defensive line. He gets destroyed by double
- 39:42teams. He plays way too tall.
- 39:44His technique is not good. He brings raw power and raw
- 39:49athleticism as we talked about, with heavy hands and a hot motor
- 39:53that doesn't necessarily stop, which is not always a good
- 39:57thing. But again, he played four years
- 39:59in college. He did not.
- 40:01One year he had surgery. So we'll call it 3 and a third
- 40:04years in college and it just never got better.
- 40:07He never improved. And at what point at Florida and
- 40:10the SEC at it was those defensive line coaches down
- 40:13there? I don't know who is defensive
- 40:15tackle coach doing the line coach defensive coordinator was.
- 40:18Down there in Florida, but at some point you would assume
- 40:21after two full years there you would see his technique and his
- 40:25his abilities improve and just didn't happen.
- 40:28And so those are all huge red flags thing.
- 40:29I don't put him, I don't put him.
- 40:32I mean he's kind of like the opposite of Lee Hunter, right?
- 40:35Lee Hunter is very technically sound, very unathletic here
- 40:39we've got very athletic, very not technically sound.
- 40:43And so it is a weird how you rank this.
- 40:47And the problem is, is you don't drink, you don't draft a guy
- 40:50like this in day 2. This is a day three guy and
- 40:53you're drafting on hopes and dreams where you're spending a
- 40:55fifth, sixth round pick. And so I like Kayla Banks a lot.
- 40:58I I just would not, he's going to go near the bottom of our top
- 41:0250, unfortunately, when we eventually get around to ranking
- 41:05those guys. OK, I think we've got time for
- 41:08one more guy before I have to take off because again, yeah,
- 41:12change the slice. Next guy up is Eli Stowers.
- 41:17Stowers Stowers, Who thought this was the name I trip up on?
- 41:21This is our second tight end we're talking about.
- 41:23So we reached our second garden, our second tight end today.
- 41:27I this is this is the guy that I think you know, is going to be
- 41:31directly compared to Kenyan Sadiq, kind of the same way that
- 41:35Tyler Warren and Colston Loveland will be seen for the
- 41:38next, you know, basically their whole careers.
- 41:40Honestly, this guy isn't even a real tight end.
- 41:44First of all, he doesn't block like a tight end.
- 41:48He played quarterback a couple years ago.
- 41:50He basically has just been like, I don't know if he was Diego
- 41:53Pavia's roommate, but basically travelled around with him,
- 41:57played at New Mexico, New Mexico State, whatever it was, and then
- 42:00the Vanderbilt played quarterback, switched to tight
- 42:02end. He doesn't have the ability to
- 42:06play tight end at the highest level.
- 42:08I think it's great to see how well he has done.
- 42:10This dude reminds me of like Marcus Colston.
- 42:12This. This dude is a big slot
- 42:15receiver. That being said, I think he's
- 42:17really good. I think he's really good as that
- 42:20receiver. If you put him in your scheme
- 42:22and you're expecting him to block, I don't think you're
- 42:24going to be very happy. But I mean, I think he had.
- 42:27Didn't Stowers have the highest vertical leap next to Sadiq?
- 42:33So they go in alphabetical order.
- 42:36Yeah, Sadiq jumped and set the record and I believe Next up was
- 42:40Stowers and jumped and broke Sadiq's record.
- 42:44That's a Sadiq for like 2 minutes or something like that.
- 42:47That's funny. But yeah, I, I think that both
- 42:50of these guys, I mean, I think they're both special stowers
- 42:54though. I, he is a tight end, I guess,
- 42:56but I would really consider using him as a big slot
- 43:01receiver. I mean, again, maybe he can
- 43:04develop, maybe, you know, somebody's got, you know,
- 43:06something in mind for how they can utilize him a little bit
- 43:09better. But I do think that it's, I
- 43:11always think it's interesting when, you know, a quarterback
- 43:14switches positions to anything. Honestly, it just shows how much
- 43:19of an athlete that person is. I think honestly, just in
- 43:22general as a receiver, he is really good.
- 43:26It might be just because he was playing tight end that he was
- 43:29able to get, you know, a little more open.
- 43:31Maybe he got a little more disrespected.
- 43:32I'd like to believe that SEC defenses and, you know, scouts,
- 43:36you know, just game planning for him, you know, knew what he was
- 43:40capable of but still wasn't able to stop himself.
- 43:43I still like Sadiq as the top tight end and honestly the
- 43:46overall better player, but I think Stowers is right there.
- 43:51I agree with everything you said.
- 43:52He is too small for a tight end, too big for a receiver.
- 43:55Personally he should cut about 20 lbs or so, maybe 1015 lbs and
- 44:01and play slot. That way he can gain his speed
- 44:04because in the NFL it's not going to work the way they get
- 44:07it. At Bangor Belt he was only on
- 44:09the field as a blocker for 127 of 307 rushing plays and that
- 44:15just doesn't work to stand in the NFL roster as A tag end.
- 44:18Now he did miss one game and so they had a rushing attempts
- 44:21where he was He didn't play that game and so so the stats are
- 44:24kind of off a little bit. Also one thing to note here is
- 44:27that he plays slower than the combine tape shows.
- 44:33He ran really fast, but he does not play that fast on the field.
- 44:38And so something to something to note for I think slot fits him
- 44:41very well for that reason. Again, he's not going to be your
- 44:43main guy. He's not going to be your stand
- 44:45out, but he will be a a good key fit guy at six foot four.
- 44:49He has an incredible catch radius radius, excuse me, and I
- 44:53think that he's going to be a wonderful player.
- 44:54He just kind of needs to pick and and personally he should.
- 44:58It may not be easier to drop the weight and put weight on, but
- 45:01he's going to have to put on about 30 or so pounds of not fat
- 45:05but muscle to to be an effective blocking tide in and also
- 45:09receiving. Or just drop 1510 to 15 lbs.
- 45:13Again, neither are easy, but with the money the NFL teams
- 45:16have in their nutrition and things like that, they will get
- 45:19it figured out. Somebody will take him probably
- 45:21late day 2 and probably draft him as a receiver and then just
- 45:25say this is what we're going to do.
- 45:26And that's probably going to be the phone calls because they're
- 45:28they're going to go to draft him.
- 45:29Hey, are you willing to play receiver for it's yes or no?
- 45:32OK, we're going to draft you then or I I'd rather play Titan.
- 45:35OK, we're moving on. So I I think he'll have to make
- 45:37the decision very quickly on draft days, but yeah, here we
- 45:41are. Here we are.
- 45:45Sweet Avery, anything to add? No, no Sir.
- 45:50OK, it's glad to have you back. I believe next week I wish to
- 45:56stop recording. I wanted to stop sharing.
- 45:57There we go. That would have been bad.
- 46:00Next week I think we got a full barn.
- 46:02I think all three of us are here next week, so that should be
- 46:04good. Get the boys back together.
- 46:05We've had two guys conveniently steal 6 balls every single week,
- 46:10so we don't need to talk about the house and the wise, but
- 46:13yeah, that that's all for today. Thank you for joining us this
- 46:15week on three Guys 6 balls and we'll see you guys next time.
- 46:18Bye now, y'all. Also, Mark Davis and Sarah Kyle
- 46:20still sucks.
