Transcript
- 0:00How long is the drive from Stillwater to Memphis it?
- 0:02Is about 6 1/2. We carp was he said he made make
- 0:08it in six but we we about ran out of gas once and then we got
- 0:13pulled over once he. Didn't tell me that.
- 0:17Yeah. So it was good though we we got
- 0:20well. So we got pulled over and the
- 0:22guy came around to my side and and Carp says officer did I do
- 0:28something wrong? And he says yeah you were you
- 0:30were going 72 and a 70. And I about spit out my water.
- 0:35I was you know I didn't I never got pulled over for going two
- 0:39over and I didn't know I I thought maybe he was kidding but
- 0:43he was serious. So he he said, yeah, you're
- 0:47going 72 and a 70 and it changes from 75 to 70 right back there,
- 0:54you know, about a mile back. And I was like, wow, speed.
- 0:57Trap. Wow.
- 0:58Jeez. And he says He asked Carp, he
- 1:02says, Would you, would you mind coming back and and sitting in
- 1:06my my car and I was like, wow, it's getting weirder.
- 1:10So TARP, Yeah, no problem. So he goes back and apparently
- 1:17he he was the drug dog cop. And so he we had rental car,
- 1:24South Carolina license plate and he saw bags in the back of our
- 1:29our our Ford Explorer rent a car and had the.
- 1:35I mean he didn't tell Carp this, but apparently he was he thought
- 1:39we were. Well he did tell Carp.
- 1:41He said, well, I pulled you guys over because I saw a couple of
- 1:44guys in a South Carolina license plate with bags in the back of
- 1:49their car. I thought you guys might be
- 1:51smuggling stuff. So he had the the drug dog sniff
- 1:53carp, which obviously we weren't.
- 1:57We were not smuggling the drugs. So this time he let us off
- 2:02without it, without a ticket. So we we had a little pit stop
- 2:05there. We almost ran out of gas and we
- 2:07ended up at A at a bait and tackle shop by a lake somewhere
- 2:12in in the border of Arkansas and Oklahoma.
- 2:17So it was good. It was, you know, an eventful
- 2:19little trip. And now we made it.
- 2:23They don't. They don't.
- 2:23Those guys don't know who you are.
- 2:24No one said. Excuse me, Aren't you guys
- 2:28baseball players or former baseball players?
- 2:31No one knew. No, no, we were.
- 2:35We were suspected drug smuggling.
- 2:38That is great. This is awesome though.
- 2:40And not not that part, but the. Six.
- 2:41That part. It's the best part.
- 2:44OK. But I mean for the experience,
- 2:46it's a great story. So the the six hours, are you
- 2:49guys talking the whole time? Are you listening to music?
- 2:52Who's controlling the radio? What's the snacks like this is?
- 2:55I wish you guys would have filmed this six hours.
- 2:58Yeah, no, we watched the Tom Brady roast for a good bit.
- 3:02So that took up about for, I mean, I don't know if y'all saw
- 3:05that, but it it just kept going. I mean three hours, 2 1/2 hours,
- 3:093 hours of our drive. So we watched that we when we
- 3:16stopped. Well when we were forced to stop
- 3:18for gas we just it was a I think it was I can't remember the
- 3:24first name of it was something bait and tackle.
- 3:26We weren't even sure on the little map if they were going to
- 3:28have gas, but we risked it and they had gas and then, you know,
- 3:33they had more. I think they had more fish food
- 3:35than they had people food. But they, they had a a grill on
- 3:39the back. And so carp's like, I'm in the
- 3:41burger. So he ordered a burger.
- 3:44And so I'm like fine. And so we waited.
- 3:47We ordered burgers and waited. That took a little longer than
- 3:50we anticipated, but we had burgers there at the at the bait
- 3:54and tackle shop and then you know, we just, yeah, we watched
- 4:00the Tom Brady deal which chatted about, you know, anything and
- 4:03everything and and it was a good time.
- 4:07That's all. Let me ask you this because you
- 4:09mentioned Carp's body position, which has to do with swing path
- 4:14and things like that for people in the know.
- 4:17You know who was just talking about that?
- 4:19Goldie, when he was taking the extra BP he was working on body
- 4:24position. Did he give you a call or send
- 4:26you a video or anything saying hey, any ideas?
- 4:31No I I I I know Goldie well but not not that well we've never
- 4:36really talked hitting so I know that you know he's obviously
- 4:41goes way back with Turner Ward and and so I no I haven't I
- 4:45haven't ever really talked much with with Goldie about you know
- 4:50hitting or or the swing so you looked a lot better yesterday I
- 4:54tell you that I'm. Going to give you credit for it
- 4:56anyway you. Know what?
- 4:59We were just talking yesterday before the game and I thought
- 5:02him a few things. Now you sound like ball game.
- 5:06I was just kidding. What do you think of this ball
- 5:09club man? Obviously yesterday was was
- 5:12nice, but a lot of the rest of it is not so good, I think it's
- 5:15fair to say. Yeah you know it's been really
- 5:19kind of strange from the offensive side really to to you
- 5:25know looking at the OP s s of of you know after Contreras went
- 5:29out I saw a stat it was it was not good on on OPS left on the
- 5:36rosters. So I'm a little surprised.
- 5:39I'm not sure you know I don't I don't know why but the offense
- 5:45obviously hasn't been great or hasn't even been good decent and
- 5:50then you know the the pitching has been OK but yeah I mean it's
- 5:56just been you know it's it's been it's been a struggle it's
- 5:59been it's been not good and and you know the good news is is is
- 6:08there is a lot of games left but you got to start you got to
- 6:12start winning you got to start playing you got to get momentum
- 6:14going you got to you know you got to you got to hit better and
- 6:17so you know the the dudes in the middle of the order got to be
- 6:21dudes and and you know the young players got to take steps
- 6:26forward and and you know it's it's it's it's one of those
- 6:30things where you know they they they haven't played good and and
- 6:35that's what that's why you're there you're there to win you
- 6:37know you're Saint Louis Cardinal you're expected to play well
- 6:40expected to win you're expected to work and and to play the game
- 6:45and play the game right and and so hopefully you know yesterday
- 6:49is can get him going a little bit.
- 6:52How does your preparation as a hitter change when you're facing
- 6:55a guy who's making his Major League debut on the mound?
- 7:00Well, you, you know, I think you try to watch as much tape as you
- 7:03can get from from the minor leagues.
- 7:05You know you just kind of pay you know what's what's he do,
- 7:08you know just give me some some kind of some kind of general
- 7:12information. You know how hard you throw,
- 7:14what's his out pitch, You know how many pitches do they use?
- 7:183 pitches. Is he just a two pitch pitcher
- 7:19against, you know righties or lefties and you know and then
- 7:24until you get in the box and and see it, you know there's there's
- 7:27not a whole lot that you can get from from just watching video.
- 7:30But you know you just try to try to try to have a game plan and
- 7:34then you know it really in hitting they got to throw it
- 7:37over the plate. It's more about you, you know,
- 7:40you got you got to got to throw it over the plate.
- 7:42You you look for where you want the ball and then if you get 2
- 7:46strikes, you got to battle. And so sometimes, you know we
- 7:50get so focused on the plan based on who's pitching that we lose.
- 7:54We lose sight of what makes us good.
- 7:57And as hitters and you know, for me it was I got to be ready for
- 8:02a fastball out of the plate. And if he makes a mistake and
- 8:05I'm going to, I'm going to hammer it and you know, if he
- 8:07hangs me and breaking ball, I got to be ready to hit it.
- 8:10And so those are those sometimes you know like I said there's so
- 8:15much information now and there's so much scouting and there's so
- 8:18much data on on he throws this pitch and this count and he
- 8:23won't throw this pitch and that count.
- 8:25You know if you get too much, too much going in your in your
- 8:28brain sometimes you forget you know that it's, you know you got
- 8:33to get it back to to simple. So that's that's usually how I
- 8:37would handle it. So yesterday Ollie gets tossed
- 8:40out for the first time of the season.
- 8:42It was a good one. I mean, it was it was a real
- 8:44good one. And he, he actually, after the
- 8:47game said, yeah, that was by design, trying to get the team
- 8:51fired up. Now Goldie kind of wiped that
- 8:54aside when I asked him about it, but some of the other players
- 8:56said that that does fire up the team.
- 8:58Did you've been there when your manager's gotten tossed?
- 9:02Does that fire up the team? Yeah I mean you know I I I think
- 9:07it sends a message sometimes that hey you know let's get a
- 9:11little energy you know let's let's I'm not going to you know
- 9:16he's you know basically I'm not going to stand over here and and
- 9:19and and and just lay down you know we need to we need to fight
- 9:24and and sometimes it takes you know a little bit of emotion
- 9:28like that and a little bit of you know I don't I don't think
- 9:34you you you rely on that as as something you need to get you
- 9:38going or motivated. But sometimes when the manager
- 9:41goes out there and kicks some dirt and yells at people and
- 9:45looks like scales got in on a little bit sometimes you know it
- 9:50gets it gets the boys going a little bit So yeah I mean I I
- 9:53don't you know it's it's sometimes it's it's a good thing
- 9:57it's a good thing and and players you know they say you
- 10:00know made that maybe the you know manager's got my back he's
- 10:03got our back and but you know as a player it's all about
- 10:07execution. You know what I mean It only
- 10:09goes so far and you got to go out there and play well you got
- 10:12to play you know you got to you got to play well enough to win
- 10:16And that while that's you know fun and sometimes they'll get
- 10:20you juices going a little bit you still have to go out there
- 10:22and execute. Well, thank you for getting
- 10:24Goldie on track. Thank you for getting Carp, and
- 10:26thank you for the road trip story because it's the best
- 10:28thing we've had on on the show in weeks, right.
- 10:30We all agree. I.
- 10:31Have a feeling that one might go national.
- 10:33If we're not, we're not tweeting that out.
- 10:35We will not. But Matt, that's a good story,
- 10:38right? We can put that out, right?
- 10:39We can. We can market that.
- 10:41It's funny, right? I mean, I guess I just, you
- 10:45know, I don't really. It's somehow it's going to
- 10:48backfire and put you on a bad Charlie.
- 10:50Somehow, Charlie, it's a good. Story.
- 10:52Listen, come on, Charlie clicks. Marlow.
- 10:55Have a little respect. I mean, it's a great story, man.
- 10:58And and it's positive. It's funny you guys didn't do
- 11:01anything wrong. Allegedly.
- 11:03You guys, you try to find a better story.
- 11:05You guys can tweet out, You know, maybe well, how much time
- 11:08is left in the show. Oh, we got about 3 minutes.
- 11:10I won't tweet it. I'll just put it on YouTube,
- 11:12yeah. Oh, great.
- 11:13Even better. But we've respected our
- 11:16boundaries. Remember, we didn't put the
- 11:17stuff about you with the fire you told us not to.
- 11:20We're very respectful of boundaries.
- 11:22At least I am. Personally, I can't speak for
- 11:23cold Oh. He's the best.
- 11:25He's the best. Charlie's the best.
- 11:27He's the best. Maddie.
- 11:29Glad you're back on the show, Charlie.
- 11:31Thank Maddie. You're the best.
- 11:32Maddie. Hey, thanks.
- 11:33For coming. On man we'll touch.
- 11:34Base next week, OK. See you, Big Dowell.
- 11:36See ya.
