- 0:00Speaker 1: My name is Sharrett, I think for Headpe, and we're
- 0:04Speaker 1: gonna be coming to Australia in February twenty twenty six
- 0:08Speaker 1: and playing only tracks from the Broke Record, which is
- 0:13Speaker 1: the record that came out in the year two thousand
- 0:17Speaker 1: and gave me a career.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Hey how yeah, brother, Well I'm glad it did because
- 0:22Speaker 2: it means we're still here today talking.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Fuck yeah. No, I have no other skills.
- 0:32Speaker 2: You only need one when you do it well. So
- 0:37Speaker 2: head Pee returned to Australia with non Point this February
- 0:40Speaker 2: for a run a show starting in Sydney on the
- 0:42Speaker 2: sick you go through Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Finish Satellaite on
- 0:45Speaker 2: the eleventh, and you go out to New Zealand for
- 0:47Speaker 2: shows in Auckland on the thirteenth. And while in to
- 0:49Speaker 2: the night after this suddenly seems like six months since
- 0:53Speaker 2: you were here last. Mate, Like, Australia either loves you
- 0:55Speaker 2: or you love Australia, which one is?
- 0:59Speaker 1: Wow, I think it's it's mutual. It's a it's a
- 1:03Speaker 1: love affair, you know. But I think it's been more
- 1:06Speaker 1: like nine minds, maybe even ten, but who's counting. I'm
- 1:11Speaker 1: glad I'm just glad to make it. I'm just glad
- 1:13Speaker 1: to make it back and rock out because really's had
- 1:15Speaker 1: such a good time there. Yeah.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Now we're gonna start talking a little bit about the
- 1:20Speaker 2: album Break. But before we start talking about it, I'll
- 1:22Speaker 2: just ask you a question about the title, like is
- 1:24Speaker 2: it in reference because the band was broken at the time,
- 1:27Speaker 2: or is it reference actually being broken.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Both? Uh huh. That's why we liked the title is
- 1:37Speaker 1: because it could mean more than one thing. Yes, so
- 1:42Speaker 1: it meant the obvious thing of empty pockets and empty
- 1:47Speaker 1: bank account, but also it also meant, you know, feeling broke,
- 1:54Speaker 1: insecure and all that type of shit too when you're
- 1:57Speaker 1: like a drug addict and all that. But film broke
- 2:04Speaker 1: makes good music, you.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Know, he doesn't. Now, you said you're going to be
- 2:09Speaker 2: playing that album went full, which is great, But how did.
- 2:12Speaker 3: You go relearn it?
- 2:13Speaker 2: Like when you made that album, I kind of imagine
- 2:15Speaker 2: you sat there and went, I'm going to play this
- 2:16Speaker 2: front the back one day, you know, Like, was there
- 2:18Speaker 2: any difficulties learning the whole thing?
- 2:21Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely, No, it wasn't difficult, but you know, had
- 2:27Speaker 1: we kind of like, uh, you know, we've got some
- 2:31Speaker 1: really long songs. So sometimes in the live setting we
- 2:34Speaker 1: do more of like you know, Medley, so we can
- 2:36Speaker 1: play a bunch of shit, you know. So I imagine
- 2:42Speaker 1: when we when we uh, when the show comes out,
- 2:45Speaker 1: there'll be some songs played in full, some songs that
- 2:48Speaker 1: we just touch on. But we want to make it,
- 2:50Speaker 1: you know, exciting for people, you know, rather than we've
- 2:54Speaker 1: got some tricks that we're going to be doing. It's different.
- 2:57Speaker 1: You know, it's twenty five years later, so it's it's
- 3:00Speaker 1: got more of a straight ahead, thrashy punk rock vibe
- 3:05Speaker 1: now than than it did then.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Oh very nice. That album is recognized as being one
- 3:11Speaker 2: of the defining moments of the New Middle Genesis. I
- 3:14Speaker 2: suppose in grace like, do you agree with that?
- 3:18Speaker 1: Well, that's not for me to say, is it. Yeah,
- 3:24Speaker 1: So as an artist, it's well for me, I can't
- 3:29Speaker 1: really comment on things like that. I think is best
- 3:33Speaker 1: uh for someone else to make that comment.
- 3:39Speaker 2: You answer this one, then, could could you feel that
- 3:41Speaker 2: there was something special about it in the writing and
- 3:43Speaker 2: recording process?
- 3:45Speaker 1: Uh, that's a good question, h I think so we
- 3:54Speaker 1: really liked the record, but I'm sure we really like
- 3:58Speaker 1: the one before it too. I mean, but what I
- 4:04Speaker 1: do know is that the record company spent the right
- 4:07Speaker 1: amount of money to like, you know, get the record
- 4:11Speaker 1: in front of people and get it on the radio
- 4:14Speaker 1: and stuff. So we knew that was coming. You never
- 4:18Speaker 1: know how people are going to receive it, you know.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Yeah, true, true. So on on those lines, the first
- 4:25Speaker 2: album was more hardcore punk and hip hop that when
- 4:28Speaker 2: you came around to that one, you brought some plastic
- 4:30Speaker 2: brock and some world music influence into it. Like was
- 4:33Speaker 2: that did you just stumble upon that and say able
- 4:35Speaker 2: to see how I go? Or did you get out
- 4:37Speaker 2: and sort of think how can we improve it?
- 4:40Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 4:40Speaker 1: It wasn't really done consciously. It was just kind of
- 4:43Speaker 1: the natural evolution of the band. We were just kind
- 4:47Speaker 1: of you know, my songwriting was getting better just from
- 4:53Speaker 1: doing it more, you know and learning. So on the
- 4:57Speaker 1: first record, my songwriting abilities were pretty shit.
- 5:00Speaker 3: It there was pretty experimental back then, mate, So it's
- 5:05Speaker 3: also somewhat of a risk. But how long after the
- 5:08Speaker 3: album came out did you sort of sit back and
- 5:09Speaker 3: think fuck paper actually started to get into this sound?
- 5:12Speaker 1: Im just what? Well? Yeah, you know, because Bartender had
- 5:20Speaker 1: to run at radio and next thing, you know, we
- 5:23Speaker 1: were just playing sold out shows all over the planet,
- 5:26Speaker 1: so you know that. But that wave kind of ended
- 5:32Speaker 1: pretty quickly. But what was what was great is then
- 5:36Speaker 1: when we entered into the underground and still had another
- 5:39Speaker 1: hit with Renegade. But Broke is the one though, that
- 5:44Speaker 1: put us on the map.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Yeah, what do you think that is?
- 5:51Speaker 1: I think there was a time. The timing of it,
- 5:55Speaker 1: you know, it's a great question. I think the timing
- 5:59Speaker 1: that it came out just push some buttons with with
- 6:02Speaker 1: some of the teenagers in the on the planet. The honest,
- 6:08Speaker 1: my honest vocals, you know, pulling no punches and kind
- 6:14Speaker 1: of like you know, just telling stories about heartbreak and
- 6:20Speaker 1: how I saw society and stuff. I think people resonated
- 6:24Speaker 1: with people at that time.
- 6:27Speaker 2: And you mentioned the lyrics bro like that's the important fact,
- 6:30Speaker 2: Like you wrote and recorded that twenty five years ago.
- 6:33Speaker 2: So did relearn in It bring back any hard or
- 6:35Speaker 2: painful memories from the time.
- 6:39Speaker 1: Well, I'm not one of these guys that has no regrets.
- 6:43Speaker 1: I have like a huge, a huge book of regrets.
- 6:49Speaker 1: So when I hear some of the lyrics, I do
- 6:52Speaker 1: regret them. There's some like really kind of uh just aggressive,
- 6:58Speaker 1: misogynistic kind of lyrics because you know, I was going
- 7:03Speaker 1: through some heartbreak at the time, so you know, if
- 7:07Speaker 1: I could go back, I changed some of that shit.
- 7:10Speaker 1: But you know I've changed, you know, twenty five years,
- 7:14Speaker 1: it's a quarter fucking century. My entire life has changed,
- 7:19Speaker 1: except for the fact that I'm still rocking out. You know.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Actually, right is a good point, though, bro, Like you
- 7:25Speaker 2: talked about that aggressiveness and misogynistic and all the stuff
- 7:27Speaker 2: that was you back then, but now you've actually got
- 7:30Speaker 2: to sing that again now, you know, Like it does
- 7:32Speaker 2: it feel weird singing when you're.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Not that person anymore? No, it really does not. It
- 7:39Speaker 1: really does not, because kind of like looking at, you know,
- 7:47Speaker 1: pictures of yourself as a child or in high school,
- 7:51Speaker 1: it's like it's it's fun to reminisce, you know. And
- 7:55Speaker 1: I've been playing those songs the last twenty five fucking years.
- 8:01Speaker 2: You'd be used to it on now.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Then a lot of them, you know, a lot of
- 8:06Speaker 1: a lot of them might never stop playing.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:10Speaker 2: No, of course you bring in the fabulous non point
- 8:13Speaker 2: with you as well, bro, who haven't been here for
- 8:15Speaker 2: over six years. So there's the logical question and logical answer.
- 8:19Speaker 2: But why did you choose Emma's touring partners. You guys
- 8:22Speaker 2: would be great together, I reckon.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Well, because those guys are pals and in the States
- 8:31Speaker 1: they're much bigger than we are and they take us
- 8:34Speaker 1: on the road. Okay, So it's kind of it's a
- 8:37Speaker 1: returning the favor.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Must feel good to be able to do shit like that,
- 8:41Speaker 2: A like with any on out smaller level down here,
- 8:44Speaker 2: when you return the favor to a mate and so
- 8:46Speaker 2: you get that. But taking your mates to another fucking
- 8:49Speaker 2: country to return a favor, that's pretty special.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Bro. I like it. I like the idea of it.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Very good. All right, may well, I know you've got
- 8:59Speaker 2: a few more to do. I'm not going to monopolize
- 9:01Speaker 2: your time, but heap you up back in Australia from
- 9:03Speaker 2: February ticket to selling well, so they don't wait till
- 9:05Speaker 2: then you get one. Get you missus one for Christmas.
- 9:08Speaker 2: We'll see you in Brisbane, dude.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Thank you so much, bro,
