Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We're live in the iHeart Music Lounge on another Thursday night.
- 0:03Speaker 1: It was Dan Hurley last Thursday. It's head coach Gino Auriemma.
- 0:08Speaker 1: 42nd year as the head coach of UConn Women's Basketball.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Hall of Famer. We keep showing up the Final Fours
- 0:16Speaker 1: with chances to win national championships. Good to see you.
- 0:20Speaker 1: You ready to start this thing for real? It's a
- 0:22Speaker 1: long preseason, isn't it?
- 0:24Speaker 2: It is. It is. I still can't get over the.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Commercials.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Oh, the sponsors?
- 0:32Speaker 2: At the beginning, yeah, the sponsors.
- 0:35Speaker 1: It says the salespeople are doing their job.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Yeah, that means they're doing their job. But I think
- 0:39Speaker 2: it's Panderas, Panderas, and Panderas because I've never met the
- 0:42Speaker 2: other guys. Are they allowed to go anywhere? Are they
- 0:45Speaker 2: allowed to go anywhere, those other guys? It gets all
- 0:52Speaker 2: the fun stuff. But, you know, the The summer goes fast,
- 0:57Speaker 2: goes faster and faster every year. And before you know it,
- 1:02Speaker 2: you're right back at it. And now the rules have
- 1:06Speaker 2: changed so much over the years. You know, when Deb
- 1:11Speaker 2: was playing, you couldn't have your first practice until October 15th.
- 1:17Speaker 2: This year we had an exhibition game on October 12th,
- 1:21Speaker 2: you know, and we've had three exhibition games already. So
- 1:26Speaker 2: everything has been pushed up. There's more games that you're
- 1:30Speaker 2: allowed to play. So it just comes at you really fast.
- 1:36Speaker 2: And I guess it's pretty good because the players would
- 1:39Speaker 2: rather play games than practice. So plus we need the money,
- 1:45Speaker 2: you know, how that goes.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Gino, you're coming off a 38-1, went to the Final
- 1:51Speaker 1: Four again. And you've played three exhibitions with a lot
- 1:57Speaker 1: of new players on your team and a lot of
- 1:58Speaker 1: moving parts because everyone's role changes year after year in
- 2:02Speaker 1: some way, shape, or form. You've played three exhibition games.
- 2:05Speaker 1: What do you like about what you've seen so far against?
- 2:08Speaker 1: A couple of decent opponents. And the score may not
- 2:12Speaker 1: show it, but that Army team's going to do pretty
- 2:14Speaker 1: well in the Patriot League. That was a fun team
- 2:16Speaker 1: to watch.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure. I think they're... Probably the best team
- 2:22Speaker 2: in that league. They have four starters back from last year.
- 2:27Speaker 2: And obviously, you know, they're well coached and they're very disciplined,
- 2:34Speaker 2: as you can imagine. And, you know, they compete hard.
- 2:38Speaker 2: So it was great to play them, you know, because,
- 2:43Speaker 2: you know, it was right around November. It's Veterans Day.
- 2:47Speaker 2: You know, it was Armed Services Day, you know.
- 2:51Speaker 1: So it was great.
- 2:51Speaker 2: It was great. I really enjoyed it. Texas was a
- 2:55Speaker 2: different story. They're going to be an NCAA tournament team,
- 3:03Speaker 2: maybe even a Final Four team. I don't know. And
- 3:07Speaker 2: Syracuse was, you know, they had an entirely new team.
- 3:14Speaker 2: And same with Texas. Any more, you don't know who's
- 3:18Speaker 2: on whose team. We tried to look at the roster.
- 3:21Speaker 2: of both Syracuse and Texas and, uh, very, very, very,
- 3:25Speaker 2: very few players were, were left from last year. Uh,
- 3:30Speaker 2: so what did we get out of the exhibitions? Um,
- 3:34Speaker 2: it was not bad. It was not bad. I mean,
- 3:36Speaker 2: we got an opportunity to play. That's number one. We
- 3:40Speaker 2: got a chance to see some of the new things
- 3:44Speaker 2: that we're trying to do. Um, but all in all,
- 3:49Speaker 2: I think it was pretty good. Um, It'll be nice
- 3:52Speaker 2: when we get, you know, Blanca back. It'll be nice when,
- 3:58Speaker 2: you know, we have a full compliment. You know, we're
- 4:01Speaker 2: still missing Marine. We're still missing Morgan Chelly. So it
- 4:09Speaker 2: was good. It was good. I'm glad we were able
- 4:11Speaker 2: to do it. We used to have these things called
- 4:13Speaker 2: closed scrimmages, you know.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Super secret.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Super secret scrimmages. You weren't allowed to tell anyone that
- 4:20Speaker 2: you were playing. You couldn't tell anyone what the score was.
- 4:24Speaker 2: It was the dumbest thing I've ever heard.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Just so people know, the last time they won it
- 4:33Speaker 1: in that preseason, Columbia beat you.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Yeah, we lost to Columbia. We played them on a
- 4:41Speaker 2: Saturday morning, I think it was. I think they got
- 4:44Speaker 2: there on the court Friday night. They were ready, man.
- 4:49Speaker 2: They were working through their stuff, and they looked like
- 4:52Speaker 2: they were playing for a national championship. And Caitlin Chen
- 4:59Speaker 2: was like dying to play. She goes, yeah, I know
- 5:01Speaker 2: these guys. We've been playing them every year. We're the
- 5:04Speaker 2: two best teams in the league, Princeton and Columbia. But
- 5:07Speaker 2: the rest of the guys on our team were like,
- 5:09Speaker 2: what are we doing with these guys? We're playing Columbia.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Thank God it wasn't like a SAT test or something.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Even though our guys are pretty good, but we would
- 5:19Speaker 2: have lost any contest that day. They didn't feel like playing.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Our guys didn't feel like playing until they were down,
- 5:27Speaker 2: and then they tried to come back and win the game,
- 5:29Speaker 2: and we lost. So the Columbia coaches told everybody, and
- 5:33Speaker 2: I saw them during the summer, that they beat the
- 5:39Speaker 2: national champions. Mm-hmm.
- 5:41Speaker 1: All right, we will delve into the roster of this
- 5:43Speaker 1: 26-27 team when we come back. We are live at
- 5:46Speaker 1: iHeartRadio in Hartford, the iHeart Music Lounge, and you're listening
- 5:49Speaker 1: to the UConn Women's Basketball Coaches Show here on Learfield.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Stay with us.
