Latest / THE DAILY BRIEF / OH Republicans 'couldn't be more pissed' over Ramaswamy ad
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The Ohio governor's race is now firmly in the gutter,
- 0:03Speaker 1: and tonight the president is defending what is one of
- 0:06Speaker 1: the most controversial political ads in memory, an ad paid
- 0:10Speaker 1: for by Republican nominee Vivek Ramaswamy, featuring the estranged mother
- 0:14Speaker 1: of Ramaswamy's Democratic opponent Amy Acton.
- 0:17Speaker 2: The ad calls her daughter a liar and not fit
- 0:20Speaker 2: for office.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Acton's mother, who fled the state with her husband after
- 0:24Speaker 1: a grand jury indicted him.
- 0:26Speaker 2: For raping Amy Acton when she was a child. It
- 0:30Speaker 2: is the worst thing imaginable.
- 0:32Speaker 1: And tonight, President Trump is defending the ad.
- 0:36Speaker 3: The fact is, I know nothing about it, but I
- 0:39Speaker 3: hear the mother went very rogue on the daughter, doesn't
- 0:43Speaker 3: have a lot of respect for the daughter. And I
- 0:46Speaker 3: think the mother is a witness to things also. So
- 0:49Speaker 3: who knows? And you have to figure that out. It's
- 0:52Speaker 3: a very unusual situation to have a mother hate a
- 0:55Speaker 3: daughter that much. But I don't think that has anything
- 0:57Speaker 3: to do with Vivek.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Trump actually seemed to know quite a bit about the situation. Now,
- 1:06Speaker 1: Acton has been open that she has not seen her
- 1:08Speaker 1: mother since she was 12 years old because that's when
- 1:11Speaker 1: she testified that her stepfather abused her. A grand jury
- 1:15Speaker 1: indicted him on a rape charge of a child, pedophilia.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Her stepfather and her mother then fled the state together
- 1:24Speaker 1: to avoid facing those charges.
- 1:26Speaker 2: These allegations are horrific. Abuse, rape and pedophilia.
- 1:31Speaker 1: And even as Democrats and Republicans are disgusted and stunned,
- 1:35Speaker 1: the two most prominent Republicans in America, Trump and Vance,
- 1:39Speaker 1: are defending Ramaswani.
- 1:42Speaker 4: The Democrats in the state of Ohio are obsessed because
- 1:45Speaker 4: guess what? Vivek Ramaswamy had the audacity to run a
- 1:50Speaker 4: TV commercial which calls it out like it is and
- 1:53Speaker 4: calls Amy.
- 1:54Speaker 5: Acton a liar. I have to admit that I'm a
- 1:56Speaker 5: little bit disgusted when I see Republicans across the country
- 2:01Speaker 5: who are whining more about that advertisement than they are
- 2:04Speaker 5: about what the congressional Democrats and other Democrats want to
- 2:07Speaker 5: do to the United States of America.
- 2:12Speaker 1: So Vance is disgusted by people who are disgusted by
- 2:16Speaker 1: a candidate running an ad legitimizing a mother who defended
- 2:20Speaker 1: her husband when a grand jury returned an indictment saying
- 2:23Speaker 1: that he raped her daughter.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Does he truly know the details? Because it doesn't seem.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Possible that he's disgusted by people who are disgusted by that.
- 2:32Speaker 1: And the Republican who took over Vance's Senate seat does
- 2:35Speaker 1: not think the ad is acceptable. John Husted is in
- 2:37Speaker 1: locked in a tight race against Democratic nominee Sherrod Brown.
- 2:41Speaker 1: He told the AP he would not have run that ad.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Here's what Republican Congresswoman Nancy Mace just told Jake Tapper.
- 2:47Speaker 1: This ad is going to go down as the most shameful, disgusting,
- 2:51Speaker 1: offensive ad this election season.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Trump's former U.N.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Ambassador Nikki Haley, another whining Republican, calling Ramaswamy, quote, a
- 3:01Speaker 1: bad guy. Well, Ramaswani's ad was also the final straw
- 3:06Speaker 1: for his Republican opponent in the primary.
- 3:08Speaker 6: Yeah, it's revolting. They don't have anything left. Vivek's already
- 3:14Speaker 6: a loser. You know, if this is the kind of
- 3:16Speaker 6: crap they do, if Vivek gets in office, you can
- 3:18Speaker 6: be sure they're going to lead with zero moral compass.
- 3:20Speaker 6: It's time to break the spell of the party lines.
- 3:25Speaker 6: I don't love it, but I'd rather see Amy be
- 3:28Speaker 6: the governor than Vivek.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Again, He's a Republican.
- 3:34Speaker 1: And the historically conservative-leaning editorial board of the Columbus Dispatch
- 3:37Speaker 1: also endorsing Acton, writing, the reckless behavior of this Ohio
- 3:41Speaker 1: governor candidate can't be ignored.
- 3:44Speaker 2: And the fallout doesn't stop there.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Tonight, one of the nation's top election forecasters, Larry Sabato,
- 3:49Speaker 1: changed the race for governor in that state from toss-up
- 3:51Speaker 1: to lean Democrat. It is not the only race that Trump, Vance,
- 3:55Speaker 1: and others, though, are unleashing innuendo and insults about. Like
- 4:00Speaker 1: when Vance last week suggested, suggested, I mean, he all
- 4:04Speaker 1: but said it, that Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Tallarico
- 4:07Speaker 1: is gay.
- 4:07Speaker 5: I love you too, sir. In a totally platonic way,
- 4:16Speaker 5: to be clear. I'm the vice president, not James Tallarico.
- 4:24Speaker 1: And in Michigan, this is what Trump and Senator Ted
- 4:27Speaker 1: Cruz are saying in their closing arguments to take down
- 4:29Speaker 1: the Democratic Senate nominee, Abdul El-Sayed.
- 4:34Speaker 3: To me, he's Mohammed. And he's a radical jihadist.
- 4:39Speaker 2: I believe this man is Muslim Brotherhood.
- 4:42Speaker 5: There's every reason to believe Abdul El-Sayed would share that
- 4:45Speaker 5: classified information with Muslim Brotherhood terrorists.
- 4:51Speaker 2: That is a stunning charge.
- 4:53Speaker 1: And those, of course, are claims designed to weaponize al-Sayed's
- 4:57Speaker 1: Muslim faith. Ads like Ramaswami's, all these things, do not
- 5:01Speaker 1: come from a place of strength. You don't go running
- 5:04Speaker 1: an ad like that from the mother of someone who
- 5:08Speaker 1: said their stepfather raped them. You don't do that from
- 5:11Speaker 1: a position of strength. And today, a brand new CNN
- 5:14Speaker 1: poll finds Trump's approval rating at a record low, just 32%.
- 5:19Speaker 1: may perhaps desperate times call for desperate measures. He's underwater
- 5:22Speaker 1: when it comes to handling the economy, immigration, and foreign affairs.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Governor Graves, when you see these kinds of attacks being used,
- 5:32Speaker 1: obviously by the president, the vice president and and others.
- 5:35Speaker 7: Right.
- 5:35Speaker 2: The fake Ramaswani in these closing weeks of the election.
- 5:39Speaker 4: Right.
- 5:39Speaker 1: The ad itself defending the ad, all but saying Tallarico
- 5:43Speaker 1: is gay as as to a reason not to vote
- 5:46Speaker 1: for him. Calling El Sayed a jihadist. Do these come
- 5:53Speaker 1: from a position of strength as you see it?
- 5:57Speaker 8: You know, certainly not, Aaron. And I think I may
- 6:00Speaker 8: have said before, you know, if you're digging yourself into
- 6:03Speaker 8: a hole, stop digging. This has just gotten almost crazy, inexplicable,
- 6:12Speaker 8: that starting with the president and the vice president, that
- 6:16Speaker 8: Republicans are doubling down multiple times over on what I
- 6:21Speaker 8: think are real strategic mistakes in the way they're conducting
- 6:24Speaker 8: their campaigns. I think that this is probably the final
- 6:29Speaker 8: nail in the coffin in the Ohio governor's race. I
- 6:32Speaker 8: just think people will react so negatively to this kind
- 6:36Speaker 8: of ad that he's probably taking himself out of having
- 6:43Speaker 8: any chance to win this race. And for a guy
- 6:46Speaker 8: that has all the money that he allegedly has, Whoever
- 6:49Speaker 8: he's paying to advise him to do this kind of
- 6:51Speaker 8: stuff probably needs to be fired.
- 6:53Speaker 7: I saw the ad and my first reaction is when
- 6:57Speaker 7: you bring family into politics, it is a high, high
- 7:01Speaker 7: risk issue. and a very low reward issue, and this
- 7:06Speaker 7: did not meet the mark. This was a Hail Mary
- 7:10Speaker 7: that landed in the end zone and may have been
- 7:13Speaker 7: returned for a touchdown for the other team, and I
- 7:17Speaker 7: agree with Governor Graves. This may have sealed the deal.
- 7:21Speaker 7: And the question is, how bad is it for everyone
- 7:25Speaker 7: down ballot in Ohio? And with all due respect, the
- 7:29Speaker 7: president needs to actually watch that ad and understand the
- 7:34Speaker 7: gravity of the situation and what his acting went through
- 7:39Speaker 7: as a human being and what that actually means as
- 7:43Speaker 7: a sexual abuse victim and not dismiss it. These are
- 7:50Speaker 7: human beings.
- 7:51Speaker 6: This is real.
- 7:52Speaker 7: This is real actions that happen in someone's lives. And
- 7:56Speaker 7: you cannot just dismiss it as a political ad. And
- 8:00Speaker 7: I'm sorry, but I cannot believe I was speechless. I
- 8:05Speaker 7: was speechless when I saw that ad.
- 8:07Speaker 6: I really was.
