- 0:11Speaker 1: you know, by McMichael, and I go, what's your problem? Man?
- 0:14Speaker 1: He goes, your damn buddy pushed you into me. What
- 0:17Speaker 1: the you gonna do about it anyway? You know? And
- 0:19Speaker 1: that's how things started, you know. And so I just
- 0:23Speaker 1: I don't know, man, I just grabbed him, and you know,
- 0:26Speaker 1: I was wrestled, you know. So uh, I just did
- 0:28Speaker 1: kind of ladder drop on him, and uh, you know,
- 0:31Speaker 1: I got him down, and I got him pretty good.
- 0:39Speaker 3: What's up, everybody? I'm peanut to him?
- 0:41Speaker 4: And this is the NFL Player's second X podcast with me,

- 0:51Speaker 5: move on and get straight to our guests.

- 1:00Speaker 4: winning champion with the Chicago Bears in nineteen eighty five.
- 1:03Speaker 4: He is a healthcare executive. Please welcome to the pot,
- 1:07Speaker 4: mister Jim.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Covet pot to the pot. Thank you. A lot of
- 1:13Speaker 1: energy going on here. I like it. It's trying to
- 1:18Speaker 1: all day one podcast one.
- 1:20Speaker 3: He does not on hour five.
- 1:22Speaker 2: You know, we're trying to get.
- 1:24Speaker 3: They normally get. They normally get. So we do about
- 1:26Speaker 3: we come to.
- 1:27Speaker 4: These and we do about twenty pods. Like after like seventeen,
- 1:32Speaker 4: I start to kind of get a little tired, and
- 1:34Speaker 4: the producer he's kind of looking at me and he's
- 1:36Speaker 4: texting me.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Over there, mister Thomas. Mister Thomas, he's the one that's
- 1:41Speaker 3: never came with that gets mentioned.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Don't giving me the side too.
- 1:44Speaker 4: I'll if we're talking about one topic too long, he'll
- 1:48Speaker 4: text us like, all right, move on, stop talking about
- 1:49Speaker 4: that bull like going to the next one.
- 1:51Speaker 3: So shout out to you.
- 1:53Speaker 4: There's your there's your shoutout. But h yeah, which appreciate
- 1:57Speaker 4: you coming on you bet?
- 1:58Speaker 1: Yeah, glad to be here.
- 1:59Speaker 5: Well, I'll go straight to eighty five. Why were you
- 2:02Speaker 5: not in the Super Bowl shuffle video?
- 2:05Speaker 1: Because I know it'd last forever and you guys are
- 2:08Speaker 1: probably pulled up on this podcast. I see one of
- 2:11Speaker 1: the white guys dancing, you know, watch fensic. We look
- 2:14Speaker 1: for watch fensic dance. You think I'm gonna if you
- 2:16Speaker 1: saw him dance, he had no rhythm and Steve Fuller
- 2:18Speaker 1: he couldn't wrap, you know, he couldn't dance. I'm like,
- 2:21Speaker 1: I didn't want to be one of those guys.
- 2:22Speaker 3: But did you guys get back late? You got back?
- 2:24Speaker 4: Like wasn't I think from what Chico or culture he
- 2:27Speaker 4: told us one time. Because he's not in it too.
- 2:30Speaker 4: I think you guys got back. I think I don't
- 2:33Speaker 4: create it for him, but you guys got back really
- 2:34Speaker 4: late from from a game or set bowl or whatever.
- 2:38Speaker 3: You got back really like late or early.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Miami beat us on Monday night. They did it the
- 2:43Speaker 1: day after the Miami beat us on Monday night. Yeah,
- 2:46Speaker 1: really Tuesday morning. Yeah. That's why when you go watch it,
- 2:49Speaker 1: you saw Peyton and McMahon. They like put them in later,
- 2:53Speaker 1: you know, like they filmed them on some kind of
- 2:56Speaker 1: green screen or something. They put them in later, so
- 2:58Speaker 1: they weren't there. But yeah, they did it. They did
- 3:01Speaker 1: it after we got beat by Miami, So you know
- 3:03Speaker 1: it's kind of ballsy, right you do.
- 3:06Speaker 3: I think I'm just think I knew that after we lost.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Yeah lost, Yeah, one lost.
- 3:10Speaker 3: This person's idea was that whose idea was it?
- 3:12Speaker 1: It was Willie's, so you know it was to feed
- 3:15Speaker 1: the needy. Yeah, and uh and so you know they
- 3:19Speaker 1: were asking a bunch of guys to go in it,
- 3:21Speaker 1: and I was like, I just didn't feel right about it.
- 3:24Speaker 5: How did they How did they like first like bring
- 3:26Speaker 5: this idea up? Because nobody just like, yeah, let's just
- 3:30Speaker 5: go fill this.
- 3:31Speaker 3: I was willly, really Willy, let's do a rap?
- 3:34Speaker 1: Yeah? Will you know? Will we Yeah? Willie's you know WILLI.
- 3:37Speaker 1: He's got a rap, you know, get the brap of
- 3:39Speaker 1: do going. He's going around telling everybody you can do this,
- 3:42Speaker 1: you can do this, you can do that, and guys
- 3:43Speaker 1: are eating it up. Man. He came to me. I
- 3:45Speaker 1: was like, I can't do it. I just can't do
- 3:47Speaker 1: it rapping. And then they just supposedly did some kind
- 3:51Speaker 1: of reboot.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Oh I didn't know that.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Oh yeah, he's trying to get guys to do that too,
- 3:55Speaker 1: And he asked me to do that and I said, no,
- 3:57Speaker 1: I didn't do the first one. I can't do the
- 3:58Speaker 1: next one.
- 3:59Speaker 3: You know, So that'd have been dope.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Yeah, a bunch of old guys up there wrapping. That's
- 4:02Speaker 1: Who's going to watch that? Nobody.
- 4:04Speaker 3: So the nineteen eighty three draft class.
- 4:07Speaker 4: Is considered one of the best draft classes of all time.
- 4:11Speaker 4: You got yourself, Dann Marino, John Elway, Jim Kelly, Chris Dolman,
- 4:16Speaker 4: Eric Dickerson, Bruce Matthews, Richard Dent.
- 4:20Speaker 3: That's a hell of a draft class. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 4:22Speaker 3: a hell of a draft class.
- 4:24Speaker 1: And d bag from Joe Green. Yeah, he was last pick,
- 4:29Speaker 1: twenty eighth, Daryl's last year and Marino's twenty seventh. Yeah.
- 4:32Speaker 1: I mean that class was incredible, and I think for
- 4:36Speaker 1: the Bears, I think we got like seven starters out
- 4:38Speaker 1: of that class, and that put us over the top,
- 4:40Speaker 1: you know, I think for the eighty five season, because
- 4:43Speaker 1: we're pretty bad when I first got there. I mean,
- 4:46Speaker 1: we were pretty bad, but we end up finishing eight
- 4:48Speaker 1: and eight that year. I think we won our last
- 4:51Speaker 1: you know, six out of seven games or something like that,
- 4:54Speaker 1: and you could just tell, you know, you were on
- 4:56Speaker 1: a trajectory then, you know. And and then the next
- 4:59Speaker 1: year we lost Jimmy matcalfway through the year, and I
- 5:03Speaker 1: think we played five different quarterbacks or six maybe, and
- 5:06Speaker 1: Nady could bring Greg Landry. He was like forty four
- 5:08Speaker 1: years old. He was our quarterback for the last weekless
- 5:11Speaker 1: season against Detroit and we beat them. And then you know,
- 5:15Speaker 1: Steve Fuller was a backup and came in and we
- 5:17Speaker 1: beat washed them. Went to the NFC Championship, got beat
- 5:20Speaker 1: out there and I think in San Francisco, and I
- 5:23Speaker 1: think that really was the catalyst of you know, I
- 5:27Speaker 1: mean we got embarrassed. I mean we didn't score it
- 5:29Speaker 1: was twenty three nothing. We didn't score any points. I mean,
- 5:31Speaker 1: offense was bad. And you know, the forty nine er
- 5:34Speaker 1: players are like bringing offense next time, you know, And
- 5:38Speaker 1: I think that really motivated us next year. We went
- 5:41Speaker 1: out there next year and played him in the regular
- 5:43Speaker 1: season and beat him up pretty good.
- 5:44Speaker 5: Jim, you know, my draft classes for the Saints they
- 5:49Speaker 5: kind of considered as one of the greatest ones. Your
- 5:53Speaker 5: draft class for the Bears you just said you just
- 5:55Speaker 5: mentioned seven starters out of that, Like, at what point,
- 5:58Speaker 5: because everybody's already starting and getting their confidence at different
- 6:02Speaker 5: times and during my class, what was it for your class?
- 6:06Speaker 5: Like I'm sure you guys talked about it, because when
- 6:09Speaker 5: you drafted together your rookies together, so you go through
- 6:12Speaker 5: all the rookie stuff together and you actually kind of
- 6:15Speaker 5: grow together. Their success is your success and your success
- 6:19Speaker 5: is their success. How did you guys start to be like, Okay,
- 6:23Speaker 5: it's us and the things that we're doing kind of
- 6:25Speaker 5: walk me through that path or what you guys, how'd
- 6:28Speaker 5: you see it through your lens?
- 6:29Speaker 1: Well? I think I think you could just tell that
- 6:32Speaker 1: class when they came in there, you know, quality of players.
- 6:34Speaker 1: I mean, Willie and Willie gall and I and Mike
- 6:38Speaker 1: Richardson were day one starters. So we started day one
- 6:42Speaker 1: and then and Richard Dent was in that class. So
- 6:45Speaker 1: Richard came in and you know, he started halfway through
- 6:47Speaker 1: the year, right then we had Dave Dorrison right and
- 6:51Speaker 1: he was starting start. You know, he started to get
- 6:53Speaker 1: a lot of playing time. And then when Todd Bell
- 6:57Speaker 1: held out the next year, the next year in eighty five,
- 6:59Speaker 1: and then you know, Day became a full time starter
- 7:02Speaker 1: and so and then Mark Boortz, who played next to me,
- 7:06Speaker 1: he became a full time starter in eighty four, right,
- 7:08Speaker 1: So you started to see that class, you know. And
- 7:10Speaker 1: then Tom Thayer he became a full time start in
- 7:13Speaker 1: eighty five. So that class started to really I think
- 7:18Speaker 1: initially people realized it was such a great class. But
- 7:21Speaker 1: then because we had these Day one starters, but then
- 7:23Speaker 1: you saw guys getting you know, eighty four, eighty five,
- 7:26Speaker 1: and then yeah, I mean, I think that's a class
- 7:28Speaker 1: that put us over the top. You know. That's how we,
- 7:31Speaker 1: I think, became so dominant in the NFC Central for
- 7:33Speaker 1: a long time.
- 7:34Speaker 4: We've all experienced what it's like to be in the
- 7:38Speaker 4: NFL coming from college.
- 7:40Speaker 3: What was your welcome to the NFL moment?
- 7:43Speaker 1: You know, I think my welcome to the NFL moment
- 7:46Speaker 1: was my first game I played against Leroy Selman, who
- 7:50Speaker 1: I think was the best player I ever played against,
- 7:52Speaker 1: Hall of Famer and best end I ever played against.
- 7:56Speaker 1: I know that for a fact. And I said, Okay,
- 7:59Speaker 1: I'm gonna come up with this guy, and I'm gonna
- 8:02Speaker 1: I'm gonna hit him so hard. So he realized, you
- 8:04Speaker 1: know that, you know, because I'm not to play him
- 8:05Speaker 1: twice a year, right, I mean, that's why they drafted me.
- 8:08Speaker 1: One of the reasons they drafted me, you know. And uh,
- 8:11Speaker 1: you know, he just olayed me, you know, made the tackle,
- 8:13Speaker 1: you know, So now they decided to run the same
- 8:17Speaker 1: play like in the third quarter, I said, okay, now
- 8:19Speaker 1: I can't. I can't come off too fast or too hard.
- 8:22Speaker 1: This time, I got to be under control. And he
- 8:23Speaker 1: jacked me right in my chin and I said, okay,
- 8:25Speaker 1: now I get it. Now I get it. And uh,
- 8:30Speaker 1: he was such a great player. I mean, you know
- 8:32Speaker 1: nowadays they got guys that are playing situations. You got
- 8:35Speaker 1: three or four path five pass rushers. You got that.
- 8:37Speaker 1: I mean he played every snap, thirty four five technique.
- 8:42Speaker 1: You had him and Hugh Green, and they were good.
- 8:44Speaker 1: They were good. So I went down there the next
- 8:47Speaker 1: year in eighty four, and I think I grade out
- 8:49Speaker 1: in ninety five. Then I realized that's how that's the
- 8:51Speaker 1: kind of game you had to play to play in
- 8:53Speaker 1: the NFL. I mean, you had to step up your
- 8:54Speaker 1: game and you had to play against the best, and
- 8:56Speaker 1: you had to perform well.
- 8:58Speaker 4: Coach you did go one said you set the tone
- 9:01Speaker 4: for the offense. And I think that was one day
- 9:04Speaker 4: it was after practice or during practice, you and stevecmichael y'all.
- 9:09Speaker 3: Got into it and you you body slammed them.
- 9:12Speaker 4: Can you can you talk to us or tell us
- 9:14Speaker 4: a little bit about that story?
- 9:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean people have talked about that, uh for
- 9:19Speaker 1: so many times. You know, God bless him. Steve was
- 9:22Speaker 1: such a great player and uh, such a such a
- 9:24Speaker 1: we lost him the summer and uh, you know, such
- 9:27Speaker 1: a such an awesome teammate too. But he is paying
- 9:32Speaker 1: the ass, you know, I appreciate it. On the shield.
- 9:36Speaker 1: He's a pain in the ass. You'd have team, you know,
- 9:38Speaker 1: and and you know Dennis Gentry and you know Thomas Sanders,
- 9:41Speaker 1: guys be standing in the back well, you know, running
- 9:43Speaker 1: first team. Oh and he goes, you know, he'd run
- 9:45Speaker 1: by flipper them, you know, hit late, hit guys late
- 9:48Speaker 1: and camp and every hit guys late in practice. Uh.
- 9:52Speaker 1: And you never really mess with me, you know. And
- 9:54Speaker 1: so it was Green Bay week, of course, you know everybody.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Everybody's a little it's a little serious, you know. And uh,
- 10:01Speaker 1: it's hot. It's hot, you know. And uh and so
- 10:06Speaker 1: I'm blocking, uh Richard and boom, I get run into behind,
- 10:12Speaker 1: you know, by McMichael, And I go, what's the problem, man,
- 10:16Speaker 1: He goes, your damn buddy pushed you into me. What
- 10:18Speaker 1: the you gonna do about it? Anyway? You know? And
- 10:21Speaker 1: that's how things started, you know. And so I just
- 10:25Speaker 1: I don't know, man, I just grabbed him and I,
- 10:27Speaker 1: you know, I was wrestled, you know, so uh, I
- 10:29Speaker 1: just did kind of ladder drop on him, and uh,
- 10:32Speaker 1: you know, I got him down and I got him
- 10:34Speaker 1: pretty good, you know. So I had him down there
- 10:36Speaker 1: and I had his helmet up, you know, his face
- 10:39Speaker 1: mask go. Man. I gave him five or six good
- 10:41Speaker 1: shots right in the face, you know, and and they
- 10:45Speaker 1: let it go. They let it go because I guess
- 10:47Speaker 1: they wanted to see him, you know, get his ass beat,
- 10:49Speaker 1: you know. And he stood up. When he stood up,
- 10:53Speaker 1: he had his chintz strapovers because I had his helmet up.
- 10:56Speaker 1: He had a chin strap over. Mind, he couldn't talk.
- 11:00Speaker 1: He goes, you want to grab you because you want this
- 11:02Speaker 1: home so bad. He's a lefty, you know. He won,
- 11:05Speaker 1: like yes, boom dropped him and that was the end
- 11:08Speaker 1: of the fight.
- 11:10Speaker 4: I don't think people realize that the fights we get
- 11:12Speaker 4: into in practice, like there's there's a there's a ton
- 11:16Speaker 4: I know, there had to be something in normals.
- 11:18Speaker 5: Yeah, but I would just say, you know what the
- 11:21Speaker 5: most important thing is, Like what Jim said at the beginning,
- 11:25Speaker 5: it was hot and so how big old Lineman versus
- 11:29Speaker 5: d Lineman fights ninety five percent of them is they
- 11:33Speaker 5: are hot and tired, and they just like you know what,
- 11:37Speaker 5: we they just gonna fight because they are.
- 11:39Speaker 3: Mad for street. They are hot, they are tired, and
- 11:43Speaker 3: that is why a lot of.
- 11:44Speaker 5: Fights start between offense and defensive linement, especially because one
- 11:49Speaker 5: of them is hot and tired.
- 11:50Speaker 2: And he just was tired of Stephen.
- 11:52Speaker 1: He know he had no reason to do it, you know.
- 11:55Speaker 1: And he you know, he had no reason to hit
- 11:57Speaker 1: me from behind. He could have just kept going and
- 11:59Speaker 1: walk back to the holder, you know, and there never
- 12:00Speaker 1: would have been a fight. But now he thought it
- 12:02Speaker 1: might have been funny or what. You know, he was
- 12:04Speaker 1: gonna get away with him. I wasn't gonna let him
- 12:06Speaker 1: get away with I love that.
- 12:07Speaker 2: Mike Diggad talked about that. How about you tell me
- 12:11Speaker 2: what it was like.
- 12:12Speaker 5: You know, all we ever hear about the eighty five
- 12:14Speaker 5: Bears or that that whole time you guys were so
- 12:17Speaker 5: good is that the defense.
- 12:20Speaker 2: So what was it like going against that defense?
- 12:23Speaker 5: I was in New Orleans where we had the number
- 12:24Speaker 5: one offense for all these years, and we used them
- 12:27Speaker 5: as great examples anything we wanted to practice, anything, any
- 12:31Speaker 5: new things we had going on. It was always good
- 12:33Speaker 5: to practice against our best because they were the best,
- 12:36Speaker 5: and so if we could get them, we know it
- 12:37Speaker 5: is going to work on game day. What was it
- 12:39Speaker 5: like going against the best defense was considered in your time?
- 12:42Speaker 1: No, I think it was great because our defensive line,
- 12:44Speaker 1: you know, I mean you got you got, you got
- 12:46Speaker 1: three Hall of Famers on the defensive line. So for us,
- 12:48Speaker 1: for for offensive line, it was it was great because
- 12:51Speaker 1: you were gonna you weren't gona play against anybody on
- 12:53Speaker 1: Sunday better than you're gonna play during the week, right,
- 12:55Speaker 1: I mean, so practicing I think was was was good.
- 12:59Speaker 1: And I think you know, they were such a great defense.
- 13:01Speaker 1: But you know, people forget about our offense. I mean,
- 13:05Speaker 1: we led the Lagan rushing four years in a row
- 13:08Speaker 1: in eighty five, we led Theligan rushing. We led the
- 13:10Speaker 1: leg in time possession, We led the league in first downs,
- 13:13Speaker 1: we were second in league in scoring. I make sure
- 13:16Speaker 1: defense pretty good. No one wants to say that or
- 13:19Speaker 1: talk about that, because I.
- 13:20Speaker 4: Mean, I don't I mean, I played for the Bears,
- 13:22Speaker 4: and I don't think I even knew.
- 13:24Speaker 3: I don't even think I knew that.
- 13:25Speaker 4: That's how crazy Chicago is, or that's how much of
- 13:27Speaker 4: a defensive talents.
- 13:29Speaker 2: Never talked about it.
- 13:30Speaker 4: Like y'all let all that. And I didn't even know
- 13:32Speaker 4: that until now, and I played for the organizations.
- 13:33Speaker 1: They were never on the field. They were never on
- 13:35Speaker 1: the field. I mean, we led the league in time possession,
- 13:38Speaker 1: led the league scoring, second league scoring, led the Ligan
- 13:40Speaker 1: first downs, right, led the league in rushing. I mean,
- 13:45Speaker 1: so total offense wise, I mean, we were right up
- 13:48Speaker 1: there in the top three in the league. So I
- 13:49Speaker 1: mean you sit there and you go, he's got that,
- 13:51Speaker 1: you know, buddy, it was buddy. Okay, yeah, it was
- 13:54Speaker 1: buddy and uh and he uh you know, that's it
- 13:58Speaker 1: was all about. It was all about defense. It was
- 14:01Speaker 1: always about defense when I first got there, and uh yeah.
- 14:05Speaker 1: And so for me, I was like, you know, you know,
- 14:10Speaker 1: I sell practices and you know, throwing guys around like
- 14:13Speaker 1: ping pong balls and like that. I said, they're not
- 14:15Speaker 1: going to do that to me. You know. For me,
- 14:18Speaker 1: I just came in and said, you know, I was
- 14:20Speaker 1: when I was a pit all right. It was the
- 14:22Speaker 1: whole line that set the practice tempo, you know what
- 14:26Speaker 1: I mean. So because we had you know, Russ Grim, me,
- 14:29Speaker 1: Bill Frey, Mark May like we set the like practice
- 14:33Speaker 1: tempo tone. You know, you come to the Bears and
- 14:36Speaker 1: it's completely the opposite. So I wasn't used to that,
- 14:38Speaker 1: you know, and uh you know, so I just said, hey,
- 14:41Speaker 1: they're not going to do that to me. And I
- 14:43Speaker 1: just think that rubbed off on the offense and in
- 14:47Speaker 1: our whole line, and I think that it helped us.
- 14:50Speaker 3: Tell me this.
- 14:51Speaker 5: You you mentioned Buddy Ryan, do you? And Peanut says,
- 14:55Speaker 5: it's just the city. So it's the answer somewhere in between.
- 14:58Speaker 5: I would love both of you guys opinion. Is it
- 15:02Speaker 5: is it that Chicago just loves the defense or is
- 15:04Speaker 5: it maybe it was like the love affair of the.
- 15:08Speaker 2: Forty six defense.
- 15:09Speaker 5: It was new, nobody else was kind of doing it,
- 15:12Speaker 5: Like what was it?
- 15:13Speaker 1: I think it was a defense forever in Chicago.
- 15:16Speaker 2: I mean you want I mean you think about you
- 15:18Speaker 2: got Buckets, you.
- 15:19Speaker 1: Got you got Bill George, you got Dick Buckers, you know,
- 15:24Speaker 1: you got Mike Singletary, and you got Brian or Lacker.
- 15:26Speaker 1: I mean that was that was It's all about the
- 15:28Speaker 1: middle linebacker, yes, you know, and and that and the
- 15:33Speaker 1: defense is it's just you know, city, big shoulders, Chicago.
- 15:38Speaker 1: That's what they want to talk about. They love Walter Payton, yeah,
- 15:41Speaker 1: you know, they love Jim McMahon. But it's all about
- 15:45Speaker 1: the defense. So you know, hey, that's fine with me.
- 15:48Speaker 1: But but people that that's what people don't realize when
- 15:50Speaker 1: you go back and look at the stats, you know,
- 15:52Speaker 1: and people still today, they'll go, all, the Bears had
- 15:54Speaker 1: a mediocre offense. I'm like, look at the stats. You know,
- 15:58Speaker 1: you see it all the time, the eighty five Bears, right,
- 16:02Speaker 1: what a defense that's in their offense? In their offense. Yeah,
- 16:06Speaker 1: and their offense was mediocre. I'm citing here, going, you're
- 16:09Speaker 1: leading the league and rushing right, you're mediocre. I mean,
- 16:12Speaker 1: I just didn't let it go, you know. But when
- 16:15Speaker 1: you look at the stats, the stats tell a different story.
- 16:18Speaker 3: I guess I never really thought of it like that.
- 16:20Speaker 4: When we talk about that that that that year, that season,
- 16:24Speaker 4: they only talk about the defense. They've even done documentaries
- 16:27Speaker 4: and it was just about the defenses.
- 16:30Speaker 3: They don't really mention you all at all.
- 16:32Speaker 4: I never, I guess I never really thought about until
- 16:33Speaker 4: you actually just said something, is like, damn, and you want.
- 16:36Speaker 3: To pretty they had a pretty good offense.
- 16:38Speaker 2: And you wonder why he is trying to let it go. Still,
- 16:41Speaker 2: I just wondering why.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Well, I take for the three games before we lost
- 16:45Speaker 1: to Miami, I think I think the combined scorers like
- 16:48Speaker 1: I don't know exactly, but the combined scorer is like
- 16:50Speaker 1: ninety five to ten. Yeah, the defense didn't score all
- 16:54Speaker 1: those points, right, somebody had to score them. You're right,
- 16:58Speaker 1: So yeah, right, it's it's it's yeah. But hey, it
- 17:02Speaker 1: is what it is, so it's never gonna change.
- 17:04Speaker 3: So you played LT.
- 17:06Speaker 4: Lawrence Taylor three times and in those three games, you
- 17:10Speaker 4: didn't give up a sack. And Lawrence Taylor said, I
- 17:12Speaker 4: played against a lot of excellent office of tackles and
- 17:16Speaker 4: I'll put him.
- 17:16Speaker 3: Right at there at the top. What does that mean
- 17:18Speaker 3: to you hearing that from LT.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Well, I mean, he's I think the greatest defensive player
- 17:23Speaker 1: to ever lived. So when you see someone like that
- 17:25Speaker 1: say say that about you, I mean, that's I mean amazing.
- 17:30Speaker 1: You know. I think the reason that I was able
- 17:33Speaker 1: to accomplish that is because we were never in bad
- 17:36Speaker 1: down in distances. We were never put in bad you know,
- 17:40Speaker 1: we weren't third and long all the time in the
- 17:43Speaker 1: eighty in the playoff game in eighty five. We really
- 17:47Speaker 1: just you know, we controlled the line of scrimmage. You know,
- 17:50Speaker 1: we weren't. We weren't third and ten, you know, we
- 17:54Speaker 1: were you know, we were third and two, you know.
- 17:59Speaker 1: And I think I think I had something doing then
- 18:01Speaker 1: in the eighty seven or when we played him, they won,
- 18:04Speaker 1: they want to We won eighty five, they won in
- 18:06Speaker 1: eighty six. We played them Monday night football on eighty seven,
- 18:09Speaker 1: first game of the year, and we beat him pretty good.
- 18:12Speaker 1: And it was the same thing. You know, we got
- 18:13Speaker 1: up on them and then you know, run the ball.
- 18:15Speaker 1: We're running the ballah so, and then in the playoff
- 18:18Speaker 1: game in ninety they beat us. And I think that's
- 18:22Speaker 1: probably when I played one of my best games, because
- 18:24Speaker 1: we were all we were behind the whole game, you know,
- 18:26Speaker 1: and was able to, you know, uh, not give up
- 18:31Speaker 1: a sack. It's amazing that you could play against a
- 18:33Speaker 1: guy like that and not do it. I didn't say
- 18:34Speaker 1: I didn't give up for pressure or something like that,
- 18:36Speaker 1: but that's for a while. But yeah, no sacks.
- 18:39Speaker 3: It's a hell of a compliment. It's a hell of
- 18:40Speaker 3: a compliment.
- 18:42Speaker 5: You mentioned his name, and you know, anytime we get
- 18:44Speaker 5: one of you old school Bears players with all due respect, Yeah,
- 18:50Speaker 5: we always want to know what was it like not
- 18:54Speaker 5: only playing with Walter Payton but blocking for Walter Payton.
- 18:57Speaker 5: I mean I only grew up watching him in my
- 18:59Speaker 5: parents van on all of the NFL films back in
- 19:02Speaker 5: the day.
- 19:03Speaker 2: And who he was as.
- 19:05Speaker 5: A how hard working he was, how much the city
- 19:08Speaker 5: loved him, seemed like every like no fan ever had
- 19:10Speaker 5: a bad experience around him. Well, could you tell us
- 19:14Speaker 5: and the viewers and the people listening what was it
- 19:17Speaker 5: like to not only play with Walter Payton but also
- 19:20Speaker 5: block for Walter?
- 19:22Speaker 1: He was just a He's just a special person. I
- 19:25Speaker 1: mean he treated everybody that he met like he just
- 19:29Speaker 1: had a just kind of this I don't even know
- 19:31Speaker 1: what it was, just annate ability to treat you like
- 19:34Speaker 1: you were the most important person he was talking to
- 19:37Speaker 1: at that time.
- 19:37Speaker 2: You know what I mean that is that's a skill.
- 19:40Speaker 1: That's a skill. Yeah, that he didn't care about anybody
- 19:43Speaker 1: else except you at that time. And he genuinely cared
- 19:48Speaker 1: about people, you know, and he was just a special person.
- 19:53Speaker 1: And so you know, luckily I got a chance to
- 19:55Speaker 1: know him, probably as well as anybody because you know,
- 19:58Speaker 1: Matts who in our roommates and Matt him are real tight.
- 20:02Speaker 1: And Matt and ire roommates on the road. So back
- 20:04Speaker 1: in the day. You got to remember now it's not
- 20:06Speaker 1: like today everyone gets their own room. We had roommates
- 20:08Speaker 1: back in the day, you know. So the only one
- 20:10Speaker 1: that had their own room was Walter, and I think
- 20:13Speaker 1: he had it in his contract. That was the only
- 20:14Speaker 1: way he got it. But he was always over in
- 20:17Speaker 1: our room anyway, when we were on the road. I'll
- 20:19Speaker 1: tell you what. The one thing I don't think people
- 20:20Speaker 1: give or think about him, what is how tough he was.
- 20:26Speaker 1: I mean he played thirteen years in a league. He
- 20:28Speaker 1: missed one game and he I mean I seen him
- 20:32Speaker 1: get his ankle rolled up. I've seen him get it,
- 20:34Speaker 1: you know, his knee twisted and he was still out there. Man,
- 20:36Speaker 1: he never missed it down, went in there and got taped,
- 20:39Speaker 1: you know, spat it over to shoe. I mean, he
- 20:41Speaker 1: just I mean one of the toughest, I think one
- 20:45Speaker 1: of the toughest. Are the toughest guys ever played with?
- 20:47Speaker 2: Tell me this, we've heard how much of a prankster
- 20:50Speaker 2: he was? Oh yeah, yeah, were you a victim of anither?
- 20:53Speaker 1: Oh?
- 20:54Speaker 2: All of us were okay.
- 20:56Speaker 1: I mean then the annual throwing and he's down in
- 20:59Speaker 1: the rookie locker room. That was the annual thing he
- 21:01Speaker 1: did every year. So you know, uh, right before the
- 21:05Speaker 1: second practice down came M eight and the heard the
- 21:08Speaker 1: ones that had like seventeen uh firecrackers on him. Yeah,
- 21:13Speaker 1: he did that, chasing all the rookies out of there.
- 21:15Speaker 6: Uh.
- 21:16Speaker 1: The annual pulling the fire alarm at training camp. Uh,
- 21:20Speaker 1: like one of the last weeks, you know, getting everybody
- 21:23Speaker 1: out of everybody out of the door. He didn't even
- 21:26Speaker 1: sleep there. He had a he had an RV. He slept.
- 21:30Speaker 1: He slept in the r V. Yeah, he slept. He didn't.
- 21:32Speaker 1: He did'n he'd.
- 21:33Speaker 3: Get all you guys messy all.
- 21:35Speaker 1: That was the place you'd hang out and you get
- 21:36Speaker 1: a beer after practice running with you know, if you
- 21:40Speaker 1: were lucky enough, he'd invite the a couple of linemen
- 21:42Speaker 1: in there and you could have a beer with him.
- 21:43Speaker 1: And then he would also call you up and he
- 21:46Speaker 1: could you know, he had that. He had that real
- 21:48Speaker 1: high voice. You know, I get this call and the
- 21:51Speaker 1: voice like Timbo, Hi, how are you? I just wanted
- 21:53Speaker 1: to call you. You know, we met up in Platteville.
- 21:55Speaker 1: You know, that's where you had training camp. You were
- 21:57Speaker 1: so wonderful to me, and you know, I was just
- 21:59Speaker 1: wondering if maybe we can meet, you know, and I go,
- 22:01Speaker 1: who is this? You know, and I like, who is this?
- 22:05Speaker 1: So they're saying some crazy stuff. So I hung up
- 22:07Speaker 1: the phone, you know, and this before cell phones or
- 22:10Speaker 1: you know. Yeah, so then the phone rings again. I
- 22:16Speaker 1: told my if don't don't answer that phone, and it's
- 22:20Speaker 1: him laughing. You know. He was a prankster, definitely.
- 22:23Speaker 3: Aster That's what people say about him the most.
- 22:25Speaker 4: I want to know your thoughts on having a thousand
- 22:28Speaker 4: yard rusher every season you were there except one.
- 22:32Speaker 1: And then I was a strike here. Yeah, that was
- 22:34Speaker 1: a strike here.
- 22:35Speaker 3: So I mean that's that's that's impressive strike here.
- 22:40Speaker 1: So I just think we concentrated on the run and
- 22:42Speaker 1: that was what we were known for, was running football.
- 22:45Speaker 1: But you remember, I mean after Walter, we had Neil Anderson,
- 22:49Speaker 1: who was a hell of a player.
- 22:50Speaker 2: I mean from Florida.
- 22:51Speaker 1: People don't really give him the credit he deserves. And
- 22:55Speaker 1: you know he played like seven or eight years.
- 22:58Speaker 3: Yeah to watch, so I yeah, he was a.
- 23:01Speaker 1: Great receiver, fast and you know he would have played
- 23:06Speaker 1: a little bit earlier. But you're not gonna shit well
- 23:09Speaker 1: hating on the bench, you know. But they put Neil
- 23:12Speaker 1: fullback and in eighty seven, and that wasn't his natural position,
- 23:17Speaker 1: and the strike came and everything. But then that was
- 23:19Speaker 1: Walter's last year. But yeah, he was a great player.
- 23:22Speaker 1: So we concentrated on a lot and that was what
- 23:24Speaker 1: we were known for, is running football. So I think
- 23:28Speaker 1: we look we look forward to it. We look forward
- 23:30Speaker 1: to running the ball.
- 23:31Speaker 4: We're going to take a short break and we'll be
- 23:33Speaker 4: back in a minute.
- 23:35Speaker 5: Okay, I want to know about the the back injury
- 23:39Speaker 5: that permanently sidelined you from football.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Yeah, well I had I had a couple things with
- 23:47Speaker 1: my back in eighty eight. I hurt my back in
- 23:51Speaker 1: training camp.
- 23:53Speaker 2: And was it a specific player? Was it just where.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Doing doing knuckcracker or Oklahoma drill?
- 24:00Speaker 3: Oklahoma drill?
- 24:04Speaker 1: Canla that You got two dummies that are probably I
- 24:07Speaker 1: don't know, six five feet apart, four feet apart something
- 24:11Speaker 1: like that, lined up like this. You got an offensive
- 24:13Speaker 1: line and defensive lineman. You got a running back getting
- 24:16Speaker 1: the ball and you got to get him out of
- 24:18Speaker 1: the hole. So they running back and run right through
- 24:20Speaker 1: it and the guys are getting hit tackled. It's just
- 24:23Speaker 1: seeing who's tougher, you know, And it's a toughness drill.
- 24:26Speaker 1: And so we did it every every training camp. I mean,
- 24:30Speaker 1: you did you did ten jumping Jackson. You wan't right
- 24:33Speaker 1: the knuck cracker offensive defensive line. And I was really
- 24:37Speaker 1: good at it. In fact, you know, Matt told me
- 24:40Speaker 1: him and Walter used to jockey and the behind lines
- 24:43Speaker 1: is to get behind me, right, because I was pretty
- 24:46Speaker 1: good at knuckracker. And it's just I got I got
- 24:50Speaker 1: kind of twisted the wrong way and I felt something
- 24:53Speaker 1: and yeah, so I mean I tried to I tried
- 24:56Speaker 1: to get a couple of quarters on shots and EPI
- 24:58Speaker 1: door and it's just in take. So I went back
- 25:01Speaker 1: and had surgery. So I was eighty eight, and and
- 25:05Speaker 1: I did something that was you know, that basically shortened
- 25:09Speaker 1: my career, and it was it was a stupid thing,
- 25:12Speaker 1: but I did it. And when I came back and
- 25:14Speaker 1: I played six weeks later after I had back surgery,
- 25:16Speaker 1: and and I just you know, it wasn't good. I
- 25:21Speaker 1: played about a quarter. I just couldn't do it. I
- 25:22Speaker 1: should have never been out there and then I went
- 25:25Speaker 1: on IR and and then I came back and I
- 25:29Speaker 1: started the last eight games of the year, and we
- 25:31Speaker 1: went to the NFC Championship game, got beat by San
- 25:33Speaker 1: Francisco at home. But that was I should have never
- 25:38Speaker 1: done that. I think if I would have taken the
- 25:40Speaker 1: year off and and you know, got healthy, you know,
- 25:45Speaker 1: did the things I should have been able to do
- 25:47Speaker 1: to cobet come back, I would have been way better off.
- 25:51Speaker 1: So it just never was the same after that, you know.
- 25:53Speaker 1: And then I I played in eighty nine, I played
- 25:56Speaker 1: in ninety and I just never was the same.
- 25:59Speaker 3: Player, you know, just lets me excuse me.
- 26:01Speaker 4: That just makes me feel even more blessed because of
- 26:04Speaker 4: nine off season or yeah, OTAs, I fractured, not fractured,
- 26:11Speaker 4: but I had a slip disc you know, L five
- 26:12Speaker 4: one her nation of my hernia and disc of mine
- 26:15Speaker 4: and I had surgery on in July. Missed all of
- 26:18Speaker 4: training camp and I was ready week one, so I
- 26:20Speaker 4: probably had surgery six weeks later. In that week one,
- 26:24Speaker 4: we played Green Bay. We ended up winning the game,
- 26:26Speaker 4: but I came I came back like way too early.
- 26:30Speaker 4: But at the same time, I was very fortunate to
- 26:33Speaker 4: where I didn't have any you know, I'm a dB,
- 26:35Speaker 4: so I do more running than actually actually hitting.
- 26:38Speaker 3: So I'm it just made me.
- 26:39Speaker 4: When you said that, I was like, damn, I'm thank Jesus,
- 26:42Speaker 4: I'm super blessed because.
- 26:43Speaker 1: Yeah, and you're not the same position as you know,
- 26:46Speaker 1: you're not you're not down, you know, uh, you're trying
- 26:49Speaker 1: to get leverage in your helmets on this car. And
- 26:52Speaker 1: so yeah, I just never was the same and and
- 26:55Speaker 1: I just you know, I uh, I don't have any regrets.
- 26:58Speaker 1: I mean, I would have done it all over again.
- 27:00Speaker 1: But looking back on it, it was, it was. It was.
- 27:02Speaker 1: It's definitely shortened my career. And that was never the
- 27:04Speaker 1: same player.
- 27:05Speaker 3: Yeah, so how tough was it for you to walk away?
- 27:09Speaker 1: So then in in ninety one training camp, I I
- 27:13Speaker 1: heard it again and uh, just in a blocking draw,
- 27:16Speaker 1: wasn't knucker, And I just got uh, I said, that's it.
- 27:20Speaker 1: I'm not going to play anymore. They put me on
- 27:21Speaker 1: member Plan B. They put me on Plan B. You
- 27:24Speaker 1: guys are too young for that, but they put you
- 27:26Speaker 1: on Plan B.
- 27:27Speaker 3: I was like a female thing.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Yeah, So Plan B was they were able to It
- 27:33Speaker 1: was after the strike, so there was no agreement, right,
- 27:36Speaker 1: and so there was no uh, collective bargaining agreement anymore
- 27:41Speaker 1: until they had to redo it. And so it is
- 27:44Speaker 1: plan B where they can they put you on this
- 27:46Speaker 1: list and you were you was basically a waiver wire.
- 27:49Speaker 1: I got you and if no one claimed you, you could
- 27:51Speaker 1: come back and uh and so I was talking a
- 27:55Speaker 1: couple of teams and uh, and I just said, just
- 28:00Speaker 1: want to do it anymore? And I made the right decision. Yeah. Yeah,
- 28:04Speaker 1: I'm sixty five years old and I'm upright and not
- 28:07Speaker 1: walking around, you know, bent over. So I'm happy I
- 28:10Speaker 1: made the right decision.
- 28:11Speaker 2: Did Yeah.
- 28:12Speaker 5: So is it true that in nineteen ninety you played
- 28:18Speaker 5: a game so well that they wanted to select you
- 28:21Speaker 5: to be Offensive Player.
- 28:22Speaker 2: Of the Week.
- 28:23Speaker 5: Yet you chose You told them I only want the
- 28:26Speaker 5: ward if the whole old line can get it.
- 28:29Speaker 2: Yeah, and so they gave it to you.
- 28:31Speaker 5: You guys like the first offensive line to win an
- 28:34Speaker 5: Offensive Player of the Week.
- 28:36Speaker 2: This is a true statement.
- 28:37Speaker 1: Yes, I did. They came to me and they wanted to.
- 28:40Speaker 1: It was against Arizona out there, and they came to
- 28:42Speaker 1: me and asked me if I wanted to. You know,
- 28:45Speaker 1: they they selected me for and I said, I'm not
- 28:49Speaker 1: going to accept that unless it's just for the entire
- 28:51Speaker 1: offensive line. I just felt like, you know, we were playing, well,
- 28:57Speaker 1: we were on a roll. You remember one thing about
- 28:59Speaker 1: offensive lineman, right, I mean, he plays, he plays a group,
- 29:03Speaker 1: and we try to have that mentality. If you single
- 29:06Speaker 1: so many defensive linemans, their defense players are different.
- 29:09Speaker 2: You know.
- 29:09Speaker 1: Defensive lineman is like, I'm you know, I'm MVP. I'm
- 29:13Speaker 1: you know, Uh, I got five sacks, I'm player of
- 29:16Speaker 1: the week. You know that's good, but you know it's
- 29:18Speaker 1: a little different. You do that in an offensive line,
- 29:21Speaker 1: you wreck the you wreck the harmony, you know what
- 29:25Speaker 1: I mean. And uh, next thing, you know, you got
- 29:29Speaker 1: guys looking at you. Now, yeah, you know you're the guy.
- 29:32Speaker 3: And then then then.
- 29:33Speaker 1: Your offensive player of the week, right, I mean, then
- 29:35Speaker 1: you might have to play against some guys got like
- 29:37Speaker 1: fourteen sacks, you know, and next thing, you know, you
- 29:40Speaker 1: might give up a couple of sacks, you know, because
- 29:42Speaker 1: that guy's gonna say, hey, that's the offensive player of
- 29:44Speaker 1: the week. I'm gonna go after that guy and see
- 29:46Speaker 1: how many sacks I can get on them, you know.
- 29:48Speaker 1: And so it was just for me. It was just
- 29:51Speaker 1: the right thing to do for offensive line, and I
- 29:53Speaker 1: didn't want to I didn't want to be singled out.
- 29:57Speaker 1: And uh, it was a funny thing because what happened was,
- 30:01Speaker 1: you know, in the NFL, they really wanted to make
- 30:03Speaker 1: an offensive line lineman offensive you know, offensive player of
- 30:08Speaker 1: the week. So a couple of weeks later they had
- 30:10Speaker 1: Jim lshe you know, they made Jim Lechee. He was
- 30:12Speaker 1: a left tackle for Washington offensive player of the week.
- 30:18Speaker 1: He made the Pro Bowl and I didn't make the
- 30:19Speaker 1: Pro Bowl. So that's how that works.
- 30:23Speaker 2: It's a popularity content.
- 30:24Speaker 1: Yeah, and I was like, you know what I mean,
- 30:26Speaker 1: still made the right decision. I never regret that, you know,
- 30:28Speaker 1: because it was the right thing to do and for us,
- 30:30Speaker 1: and it worked out.
- 30:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 30:33Speaker 4: Now I want to I want to talk about Uh,
- 30:35Speaker 4: I want to talk about your second acts.
- 30:37Speaker 3: You're you're you're out of football, you retire, you.
- 30:39Speaker 4: Walk away from the game, and you get into the
- 30:43Speaker 4: healthcare space. So currently right now you are the operating
- 30:47Speaker 4: partner at Chrissy and Company.
- 30:49Speaker 3: How did you get into the healthcare space.
- 30:52Speaker 1: I like to say it's like a thirty year overnight success.
- 30:55Speaker 1: You know, that's what people always would ask me, like
- 30:59Speaker 1: when I became a c O, They're like, how'd you
- 31:00Speaker 1: get that? Gig? I said, what do you think I've
- 31:02Speaker 1: been doing for the last twenty years? First of all,
- 31:04Speaker 1: we didn't make the kind of money they're making today,
- 31:06Speaker 1: so you had to go out of You had to
- 31:08Speaker 1: go out and work if you want to have the
- 31:10Speaker 1: same lifestyle. And I think one thing that for today,
- 31:13Speaker 1: it's going to be interesting because of all this stuff
- 31:16Speaker 1: going on in college football, you know, with with nil
- 31:20Speaker 1: and transfer portal and all this stuff for these kids
- 31:25Speaker 1: to get degrees at all. Right, and you know I
- 31:31Speaker 1: left Pitt I was fifteen credit shy because you know,
- 31:35Speaker 1: back then you had the bowl games. We played in
- 31:37Speaker 1: the Comton Bowl, and then we had the Hula Bowl.
- 31:41Speaker 1: Right then you had to Senior Bowl, right, and we
- 31:43Speaker 1: were on quarters. So we started school like January fourth, right,
- 31:48Speaker 1: and then back then, you know, they had combines all
- 31:51Speaker 1: over the place. Now they got one that big combine
- 31:53Speaker 1: they had in Minneapolis. You had to go all over
- 31:55Speaker 1: the place. So multiple Oh yeah, we had they had
- 31:58Speaker 1: blessed though, Bears, Lions, eaglest you had to go to
- 32:01Speaker 1: that one. And then they had another one. Right, it
- 32:03Speaker 1: was out in Seattle, and then they had then they
- 32:06Speaker 1: would fly you places right and you would go meet
- 32:10Speaker 1: teams right. Some wanted you to work out someone as
- 32:13Speaker 1: you didn't work out. So, you know, I get back
- 32:15Speaker 1: and it's like January, like thirtieth or first February, and
- 32:20Speaker 1: I didn't go to one class, you know. So I
- 32:23Speaker 1: went to my professor's and I said, what do you
- 32:25Speaker 1: think they go? You don't have a shot. So I
- 32:26Speaker 1: just took all ws and and then the next year
- 32:30Speaker 1: I plan on going back and I just didn't, you know.
- 32:33Speaker 1: And so it was about my sixth year in the league,
- 32:37Speaker 1: seventh year in the league. The NFL was sponsoring this
- 32:41Speaker 1: thing where they were having schools focus on getting NFL
- 32:46Speaker 1: players back to college. And the Pall in Chicago was
- 32:51Speaker 1: one of the sponsors of it. And so I took
- 32:55Speaker 1: four classes at the Paul and I took one class
- 32:58Speaker 1: at it as an independent study. And I graduated. And
- 33:01Speaker 1: so I remember I was talking to who I think
- 33:05Speaker 1: it was this a guy was really for me. Was
- 33:06Speaker 1: my mentor was a guy named vern Loux. He was
- 33:08Speaker 1: a president's CEO of Baxter Healthcare. I got a chance
- 33:11Speaker 1: to know him and I had lunch of them, and
- 33:14Speaker 1: he said, what do you think you want to do
- 33:16Speaker 1: when you're done playing? I said, I have no idea,
- 33:19Speaker 1: And he said, what's your degree in? And I said
- 33:21Speaker 1: English And he said, if I'd have said I didn't
- 33:24Speaker 1: have a degree, end of discussion, right, end of story.
- 33:29Speaker 1: So that's what worries me about these kids coming out
- 33:31Speaker 1: right now, right, I mean, because if you know, a
- 33:35Speaker 1: very very small percentage of them are going to make
- 33:37Speaker 1: it to the next level, right, and they're going to
- 33:39Speaker 1: make some bucks in school. Now, then I own all
- 33:41Speaker 1: that stuff, which is great, but that's going to be
- 33:43Speaker 1: very short lived and gone. So what are they going
- 33:45Speaker 1: to do with the rest of their life? That's what
- 33:47Speaker 1: worries me. You know, I think about that all the
- 33:49Speaker 1: time on him on the board of trustees at pitt
- 33:51Speaker 1: and you know, my alma mater. I think about it
- 33:54Speaker 1: all the time because I just feel like I was lucky.
- 33:57Speaker 1: I was one lucky ones. You know. I decided that
- 34:00Speaker 1: I knew I had to go back and and do that,
- 34:02Speaker 1: so I did. And then when I got into the
- 34:04Speaker 1: healthcare space, you know, I remember my last year I
- 34:08Speaker 1: made Now, don't laugh, anybody that's football fans, I was
- 34:12Speaker 1: the highest paid line in the league for three years.
- 34:14Speaker 1: I made four to seventy five five five on a quarter. Okay,
- 34:17Speaker 1: so I just sold that one guy just that was
- 34:20Speaker 1: high the league highest highest tackle on Me and Munos
- 34:23Speaker 1: were tied for seventy five five five other. Wow, I
- 34:27Speaker 1: just saw the just signed a left tackle for Indianapolis
- 34:29Speaker 1: for one hundred million dollars for like four years.
- 34:31Speaker 5: I'm like, you see the second rounders saying for eight
- 34:34Speaker 5: million dollars. The guy that got drafted four slots behind
- 34:38Speaker 5: me signed a four year, eighteen million dollar contract.
- 34:42Speaker 2: We had like sixteen fully gearant. I'm not mad. I'm
- 34:46Speaker 2: not mad.
- 34:46Speaker 1: Hey, you remember when I can you remember nineteen e
- 34:49Speaker 1: I'm man in nineteen eighty three is a fifty per
- 34:52Speaker 1: tax bracket. Now, I remember that in nineteen eighty three,
- 34:55Speaker 1: I was a sixth player picking the draft. I made
- 34:57Speaker 1: seventy five grand after after taxes. No way, okay, So.
- 35:02Speaker 3: Uncle Sam, why.
- 35:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean.
- 35:07Speaker 5: That's crazy if I can't yeah wild.
- 35:13Speaker 1: But anyway, yeah, So I just I just, uh, you know,
- 35:18Speaker 1: I made seven hundred and fifty thousand my last year
- 35:21Speaker 1: and my first year my first job in sales at Baxter.
- 35:25Speaker 4: Uh.
- 35:25Speaker 1: Was sixty thousand in the cube and uh put you
- 35:29Speaker 1: back to put you back down to reality pretty quickly.
- 35:32Speaker 5: Are you like a big guy in the cube? Like big,
- 35:34Speaker 5: they're incredible.
- 35:35Speaker 1: Big, it's the cube exactly exactly, and uh.
- 35:39Speaker 3: They're incredible.
- 35:41Speaker 2: Great. Great, I'm glad you got that.
- 35:43Speaker 1: And I just said, I just said to myself, I'm
- 35:45Speaker 1: not going to stay here for long. Yeah, all right,
- 35:48Speaker 1: I'm gonna work my ass off. And I just applied
- 35:52Speaker 1: a lot of the same things I learned in sports.
- 35:54Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, you got to work hard. No one
- 35:57Speaker 1: cannot work you right and uh, and you got to
- 36:01Speaker 1: do your homework right and uh, and there's a lot
- 36:05Speaker 1: of things you got to you got to persevere through
- 36:07Speaker 1: because you're going to have adversity, just like you are
- 36:11Speaker 1: on the football field, right, and there's gonna be different
- 36:14Speaker 1: obstacles and you got to figure out and rocks in
- 36:17Speaker 1: the road, you got to figure out a way to
- 36:18Speaker 1: get around him or remove them. And that's what I did. So, Uh,
- 36:23Speaker 1: I was really lucky to have a good mentor that
- 36:26Speaker 1: helped me. And I remember when he when he when
- 36:29Speaker 1: when I got the job, I thanked him, I said,
- 36:32Speaker 1: thank you. And I've used this line a million times
- 36:35Speaker 1: since I've hired a bunch of people over the years.
- 36:37Speaker 1: I said, thank you for giving me the job. He goes,
- 36:38Speaker 1: I didn't give you a job. I gave you an opportunity,
- 36:40Speaker 1: and what you make of it is entirely up to you.
- 36:44Speaker 1: That's what you said to me. I was thirty two
- 36:45Speaker 1: years old, thirty three, So.
- 36:47Speaker 5: You know, Jim, we always ask people like you know,
- 36:50Speaker 5: we asked you you're welcome to the NFL moment? What
- 36:54Speaker 5: is the welcome to the the nine to five moment?
- 36:59Speaker 5: Because it it's got to be difficult, but just different.
- 37:02Speaker 5: I don't know about difficult, But how different was that
- 37:05Speaker 5: for you to have been selected where you were selected?
- 37:09Speaker 5: Great player at pitt You've been through the highs of
- 37:13Speaker 5: the highs, you turned down a Super Bowl shuffle, and
- 37:16Speaker 5: now I'm.
- 37:17Speaker 2: Working at nine to five?
- 37:21Speaker 1: You know what?
- 37:21Speaker 3: And when did it like hit you?
- 37:22Speaker 1: Like?
- 37:22Speaker 2: What was that first?
- 37:23Speaker 6: Like?
- 37:24Speaker 1: Man, it hit me when I got in that que
- 37:27Speaker 1: And it also hit me that nobody cares what you
- 37:32Speaker 1: did before. You know, as many doors as football open
- 37:38Speaker 1: for me, it closed just as many. Yeah, and I
- 37:42Speaker 1: don't think people realize that. You know, maybe now it's different,
- 37:47Speaker 1: but you know, there's a lot of guys that wanted,
- 37:50Speaker 1: you know, a lot of people you want to be,
- 37:51Speaker 1: especially in sales. People were like, hey, you know you
- 37:54Speaker 1: played for the Bears. I'm a big Bears fan. You know.
- 37:56Speaker 1: There's a lot of other people, very you know, professional,
- 38:00Speaker 1: very high ranking people were like, never gonna give you
- 38:03Speaker 1: a shot, right, And they're never gonna give you a
- 38:06Speaker 1: shot because there is just like a dumb jock. I
- 38:09Speaker 1: don't have to give him anything, just another dumb jock.
- 38:13Speaker 1: And uh and I had to face a lot of
- 38:16Speaker 1: that down here, right, So didn't get mad about it.
- 38:19Speaker 1: Didn't get mad about it. I figured to work around
- 38:21Speaker 1: around people like that, and I figured out a way
- 38:23Speaker 1: to to uh to still do my job and not,
- 38:28Speaker 1: you know, not excited because you know, in a field,
- 38:30Speaker 1: you got a problem with someone, you beat their ass,
- 38:32Speaker 1: like you know, you got a problem. You just can't
- 38:35Speaker 1: do can't do that in office, and it's it's.
- 38:39Speaker 3: You could, but you're gonna get fired, gona get fired.
- 38:42Speaker 3: H I'm knocking on the dough.
- 38:44Speaker 1: Yeah. So that you had to learn that rather quickly,
- 38:48Speaker 1: and uh, you had to learn how to temper your
- 38:51Speaker 1: emotions and uh and not and not take everything so personal.
- 38:58Speaker 1: When you get beat on a football field, this part personal.
- 39:02Speaker 1: You can't do that because you can't let your emotions
- 39:05Speaker 1: get in the way of you know, what your ultimate
- 39:07Speaker 1: goal is, and that's being successful. And so that's kind
- 39:12Speaker 1: of the way I looked at it, and every job
- 39:14Speaker 1: that I was able to progress to, I looked at
- 39:17Speaker 1: it that way. And I think I think athletes really have.
- 39:22Speaker 6: A special gift for that because you show them where
- 39:29Speaker 6: the goal line is, they'll get there right and and
- 39:33Speaker 6: a lot of times, you know, people people don't realize that.
- 39:37Speaker 1: So you see a lot of hard drivers, and especially
- 39:41Speaker 1: in sales and other places like that, those guys do
- 39:44Speaker 1: very very well, the ex athletes because they know where
- 39:46Speaker 1: the goal line is.
- 39:47Speaker 3: The never get there and we'll be right back.
- 39:51Speaker 5: What do you what do you think is the has
- 39:53Speaker 5: been your most rewarding piece of this this journey for you,
- 39:58Speaker 5: this second chapter in your journey.
- 40:01Speaker 1: That's a good question, you know. I think when I
- 40:04Speaker 1: ran a company for ten years, company called Institute for
- 40:08Speaker 1: Transfusion Medicine, it was really it was something it was
- 40:11Speaker 1: you know, I was in healthcare business for a long time.
- 40:14Speaker 1: I was in you know, worked for Baxter Healthcare. Then
- 40:18Speaker 1: I worked for Horizon CMS. I worked for Health South
- 40:22Speaker 1: as part of the turnaround team. So I was always
- 40:25Speaker 1: in in you know that whole uh physical therapy, outpatient
- 40:30Speaker 1: kind of you know, hospital business. And uh this was
- 40:34Speaker 1: blood blood services. You know, everything you think of it
- 40:37Speaker 1: do with blood, you know, working with hospitals, and so
- 40:42Speaker 1: it was an undertaking. So I just remember that they
- 40:45Speaker 1: had so many acronyms, more acronyms in football, you know.
- 40:48Speaker 1: I had a whole book of acronyms, you know that
- 40:51Speaker 1: I that I would have to write down. And you
- 40:54Speaker 1: know what I did the first probably four or five months,
- 40:59Speaker 1: I just listened. I just listened, and I just tried
- 41:04Speaker 1: to learn as much as I possibly could about the
- 41:06Speaker 1: business and didn't want to assume or didn't want to
- 41:15Speaker 1: think that I knew more than the people that are
- 41:17Speaker 1: already there because they had such great institutional knowledge of
- 41:19Speaker 1: the business. I was just trying to learn it. Once
- 41:23Speaker 1: I got a pretty good handle on it, I tried
- 41:25Speaker 1: to change a lot of things. And that was tough
- 41:29Speaker 1: because a lot of people were adverse to change. And
- 41:35Speaker 1: so what I tried to do is I tried to
- 41:37Speaker 1: put some people that I worked with before that, I
- 41:39Speaker 1: hired as change agents, you know, to work with them.
- 41:44Speaker 1: And you know, I think that's the one thing about
- 41:48Speaker 1: me and the CEO. You got to get the right
- 41:51Speaker 1: people on the bus. And sometimes the people aren't in
- 41:55Speaker 1: the right seats, and some people got to get off
- 41:59Speaker 1: the bus. Yeah, but when you can get the right
- 42:02Speaker 1: team on the bus, you can be very successful. And
- 42:05Speaker 1: that's the one thing about leadership. You know, they're looking
- 42:09Speaker 1: for that, but they're also looking for you to do
- 42:12Speaker 1: it as well, you know, and and uh, you know,
- 42:15Speaker 1: and you gotta you gotta be there and you gotta
- 42:18Speaker 1: show you care. So that's that's it's that was very
- 42:22Speaker 1: rewarding for me. I enjoyed that.
- 42:25Speaker 4: It's no different than a head coach or a GM
- 42:28Speaker 4: picking his head coach and his head coach picking his staff,
- 42:32Speaker 4: trying to get him on the get everybody on the
- 42:34Speaker 4: same page. I wanna I want to ask you about
- 42:38Speaker 4: Mount Rushmore. You get four people or four picks that
- 42:43Speaker 4: have helped you become the man you are today.
- 42:46Speaker 3: You get four picks?
- 42:48Speaker 1: What a great question, you know, that's a great question. Honestly,
- 42:51Speaker 1: it's a I've never had that question. That's a great question.
- 42:57Speaker 1: I'd say the first two spots for my mom and dad.
- 43:00Speaker 2: I loved that.
- 43:01Speaker 1: Yeah, my dad, my dad worked at armcoas Steel for
- 43:04Speaker 1: thirty four years. His grandfather worked there for forty four years.
- 43:09Speaker 1: My brother, my uncle, both my brother in laws all
- 43:13Speaker 1: worked in the mill. All my dad's all, my all
- 43:16Speaker 1: my my buddies in high school, their dad's worked in
- 43:19Speaker 1: the mill. So they already either worked in the mill,
- 43:23Speaker 1: steel mill, railroad right, Pennsylvania Railroad, or the oil refinery. Right.
- 43:29Speaker 1: So you know, I just looked up to my dad
- 43:33Speaker 1: because my dad was you know, he took me into
- 43:35Speaker 1: the mill one time in a hot mill. I told
- 43:37Speaker 1: people as many many times in July, and he said, yeah,
- 43:40Speaker 1: I see this, these these you know, hot pieces of
- 43:44Speaker 1: metal coming down these things and it's like nine hundred
- 43:46Speaker 1: degrees in there, and all these guys are sweating and
- 43:48Speaker 1: everything like that. And my Dad's like, you never want
- 43:51Speaker 1: to come in here ever. You know, he gave me
- 43:55Speaker 1: such great advice. But he will tell you what for
- 43:59Speaker 1: he was. He was a tough, tough customer though. Man.
- 44:02Speaker 1: I mean those guys, uh, they know how to motivate
- 44:05Speaker 1: you, you know, because you think about what they had to
- 44:07Speaker 1: do for work. Every day. Get you come in with
- 44:09Speaker 1: a little ankle bruise or ankle strain or something like that.
- 44:11Speaker 1: He's like, you're not gonna miss any time when you
- 44:13Speaker 1: see guys like that. And my mom was just you know,
- 44:17Speaker 1: uh she worked at j C. Penny part time and
- 44:22Speaker 1: raising all of us. She had all four of us
- 44:24Speaker 1: in five years, and uh, my brother and I were
- 44:28Speaker 1: eleven months apart, and so we fought. Oh yeah, we
- 44:33Speaker 1: kept fall like cast and dollars. But he, uh, you know,
- 44:36Speaker 1: my mom, we used to laugh because everything we own
- 44:40Speaker 1: came from j C. Pennies, you know, and we.
- 44:45Speaker 3: Had those didn't they have way back then? What's that
- 44:48Speaker 3: did they have back then?
- 44:49Speaker 1: Away? Yeah, everything was on layaway. Yeah, everything everything on layaway,
- 44:53Speaker 1: and everything came from j C. Pennies. And you got
- 44:55Speaker 1: you got a school outfit at the beginning of the year,
- 44:58Speaker 1: you know, and uh the tennis, you know, and they
- 45:02Speaker 1: had those those j C. Penny fake tennies that looked
- 45:05Speaker 1: like they tried to look like, I don't know what
- 45:07Speaker 1: they tried to look like, something like a Nike or
- 45:09Speaker 1: something they weren't really or Converse or something, but they weren't.
- 45:12Speaker 1: And always got these kids in school, some of these
- 45:14Speaker 1: kids had them. I wanted to pair, you know, so
- 45:15Speaker 1: I told my dad and my brother and I said,
- 45:17Speaker 1: we we want these converse you know. So he uh
- 45:21Speaker 1: he took us down an army Navy store in Rochester, Pennsylvania.
- 45:24Speaker 1: You know, we went down there, and my brother and
- 45:26Speaker 1: I each got a pair and they were nine ninety
- 45:29Speaker 1: nine a pair. And my dad goes, boys, he goes,
- 45:34Speaker 1: you better take care of those shoes. There's a lot
- 45:36Speaker 1: of money. Think about that, nine ninety nine a pair.
- 45:39Speaker 1: Now they got nikes, you know, for for uh, you know,
- 45:43Speaker 1: hundreds of dollars, you know, and that's to show you
- 45:46Speaker 1: how how money was tight, you know, And he did so,
- 45:50Speaker 1: I mean those two for sure. And then you know,
- 45:54Speaker 1: my wife and I have had such a great relationship.
- 45:57Speaker 1: She's been there, she's done. You know. We've been married
- 45:59Speaker 1: now for forty three years, I think, and uh we
- 46:05Speaker 1: got married right before we uh where is actually my
- 46:08Speaker 1: rookie year? And I mean she raised our kids because
- 46:13Speaker 1: my second career I was always on the road.
- 46:15Speaker 3: Yeah, okay.
- 46:16Speaker 1: You know, and people think that athlete football players maybe
- 46:20Speaker 1: baseball players different. They think football players are always gone.
- 46:22Speaker 1: They're not always gone.
- 46:24Speaker 3: You're just amount of time doing certain month's training camp.
- 46:27Speaker 1: Yeah, it's training camp. And if you play, if you
- 46:30Speaker 1: play Green Beer Detroit, you're home for dinner. Yeah, you know,
- 46:33Speaker 1: so it's not you're it's not so. I let I was,
- 46:37Speaker 1: I was traveling. I was trying to build my career,
- 46:40Speaker 1: you know, and she did it all. You know. She
- 46:42Speaker 1: was a glue to kind of hold everything together. And
- 46:46Speaker 1: so I think to her. And then I had a
- 46:48Speaker 1: line coach at Pitt, guy named Joe Moore. Who Joe Moore? Who?
- 46:53Speaker 1: Who was like I think the best offensive line or no, no, no,
- 46:58Speaker 1: he's he he coached, He's had he I think he's
- 47:02Speaker 1: had forty five guys. Uh when he coached a Pitt
- 47:05Speaker 1: Notre Dame in Temple, Uh, playing the NFL, and so uh,
- 47:10Speaker 1: you know he coached me and Russ and Bill Freelik
- 47:13Speaker 1: and a bunch of guys. Yeah, I mean coach Notre
- 47:16Speaker 1: Dame guy, Joe Moore offensive line. It's named after him.
- 47:19Speaker 2: Yeah, it is a jo.
- 47:21Speaker 1: Yeah, he named after Joe Joe Moore. So uh, he
- 47:25Speaker 1: just he was a a special guy. And I mean
- 47:28Speaker 1: that's the reason, you know, I was a you know,
- 47:30Speaker 1: I came to the Bears, and I was the most
- 47:33Speaker 1: you know, I think prepared guy there from a technique respect,
- 47:38Speaker 1: and then I think a lot. Finally, the guy that
- 47:40Speaker 1: was talking about earlier, Vern Loux, who was a chairman
- 47:43Speaker 1: CEO of bax Of Healthcare. He was, you know, really
- 47:48Speaker 1: impressive guy. He's a Yale Grid Harvard MBA and he
- 47:55Speaker 1: was a captain of the Marine Corps. So what a
- 47:58Speaker 1: what a resume is I had, you know, and uh
- 48:02Speaker 1: just a man's man. But he was the CEO there,
- 48:04Speaker 1: and he's the guy gave me my first opportunity, so
- 48:07Speaker 1: that would be the people I put on him.
- 48:09Speaker 5: I got to ask this, and you can let me
- 48:11Speaker 5: know if I'm going way too personal. But your daughter
- 48:15Speaker 5: was born with spinal biffida. Is that did that actually
- 48:19Speaker 5: push you into the health healthcare system at all?
- 48:23Speaker 2: Or that just was just a random No.
- 48:26Speaker 1: I don't think it had anything to do it. I think,
- 48:28Speaker 1: you know, she just had a birthday yesterday, Happy birthday, Jessica,
- 48:33Speaker 1: and she's doing great. But uh yeah, it's it's uh no,
- 48:39Speaker 1: I think I think it was for us. It was
- 48:41Speaker 1: difficult because she was born nineteen eighty seven of right
- 48:43Speaker 1: in the middle of my career, and uh, it was heartbreaking,
- 48:49Speaker 1: you know for us. I mean we didn't know, we
- 48:52Speaker 1: didn't know.
- 48:52Speaker 3: Much about I was like, I was like, yeah.
- 48:54Speaker 1: We didn't even know anything about it. And then you know,
- 48:57Speaker 1: and then we found out it was the most common
- 48:58Speaker 1: birth defect and as you know, affected people in different
- 49:01Speaker 1: ways and different levels of function, different levels of ability
- 49:04Speaker 1: to ambulate. So it was difficult. But she's done a
- 49:08Speaker 1: remarkable job. I mean she, you know, went to lenn
- 49:11Speaker 1: University and graduated, been a health carecter at HR space.
- 49:15Speaker 1: She's done a great job. So she's you know, she's
- 49:19Speaker 1: she's a superstar. You know, you don't you don't get
- 49:21Speaker 1: too many people like that. But she's a hard worker,
- 49:23Speaker 1: you know. I mean she's she's had to overcome a
- 49:26Speaker 1: lot of different things that people haven't had to do.
- 49:28Speaker 2: How much better has she made you?
- 49:31Speaker 1: Oh, she's a tough per I mean she's tough. I
- 49:33Speaker 1: mean talking about surgery, I had, like I've had like,
- 49:36Speaker 1: you know, fourteen surgeries and all these orthopedic things. I
- 49:38Speaker 1: think she's had like twenty five surgeries. Wow, oh yeah,
- 49:41Speaker 1: oh yeah, shunt revisions and and spinal surgeries and and
- 49:47Speaker 1: uh you know, uh uh they had to rotate her
- 49:52Speaker 1: ankles back in and her, I mean just just for kid,
- 49:56Speaker 1: a kid, Yeah, you know tough so uh and she
- 50:01Speaker 1: would she take it on head head on and just
- 50:05Speaker 1: you know, look her straight in the eye and she
- 50:07Speaker 1: got she she got a little tough, you know. Uh,
- 50:11Speaker 1: but she she dealt with it and was able to
- 50:13Speaker 1: do it. She's yeah, doing great.
- 50:15Speaker 2: Thank you, thanks for sharing all.
- 50:18Speaker 3: We appreciate you man sharing some stories. But it was
- 50:22Speaker 3: fun presence. Yeah, we appreciate what knee surgery is.
- 50:25Speaker 1: That that's a big that's a that's a new that's
- 50:28Speaker 1: a new knee.
- 50:29Speaker 5: Oh it's a new knee, okay, because the cross is different.
- 50:32Speaker 3: I'm not No, that was an old surder Okay.
- 50:36Speaker 1: I had this operate on like five times before I
- 50:38Speaker 1: got the neigh replace.
- 50:39Speaker 3: And how's it feel with the new knee.
- 50:41Speaker 1: It feels awesome. Except I got a bone chip underneath
- 50:46Speaker 1: m plant. You can see it pop up.
- 50:48Speaker 2: Yep, yep.
- 50:48Speaker 1: So I got a bone chip. I gotta get party trick,
- 50:50Speaker 1: I gotta get scoped. But other than that, it doesn't
- 50:54Speaker 1: hurt that much anymore. But uh, yeah, this this is
- 50:58Speaker 1: a new one, and I got this is the gnarly one.
- 51:01Speaker 3: Okay, so that's an one angle one. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 51:06Speaker 3: that's that's.
- 51:08Speaker 4: That's Those are great party tricks whenever there's like that
- 51:11Speaker 4: awkward silence, like, hey, look at my.
- 51:13Speaker 2: Knee at home.
- 51:14Speaker 1: That's an one that was a a cadaver ligament and
- 51:18Speaker 1: a cadaver tan replacement. So for your ankle, yeah yeah,
- 51:24Speaker 1: they put a cadaver ligament in the cadaver ten. And
- 51:26Speaker 1: then so I got it done in Stemen clinic and
- 51:29Speaker 1: veil and the doc that did it, you know how
- 51:32Speaker 1: they do your knee where they grab your knee, they
- 51:34Speaker 1: move it around to see how stable it is. You
- 51:35Speaker 1: could grab the bottom of my ankle moving around like this,
- 51:39Speaker 1: and it just had I had no ligament snow tens there.
- 51:43Speaker 1: And uh, the guy did it said, you know, he's did,
- 51:46Speaker 1: he's done. You know, skaters, you know, basketball players, people
- 51:51Speaker 1: were traditionally bad ankles. He says, you have like one
- 51:54Speaker 1: of the worst ones I've ever seen. And I just,
- 51:57Speaker 1: you know, just delayed, delayed, delayed, And I got I
- 51:59Speaker 1: got this done on a Tuesday, and that on a
- 52:01Speaker 1: Thursday in the same week.
- 52:03Speaker 3: Oh damn, if I'm down, let me just be down.
- 52:05Speaker 2: Yes, I said.
- 52:06Speaker 1: I thought I was gonna be non weight bearing and
- 52:08Speaker 1: it was gonna be fine until I was laying in
- 52:10Speaker 1: the hospital bed looking at my boot on here and
- 52:13Speaker 1: this thing all wrapped up, Like what did I just
- 52:15Speaker 1: do to my I stayed in veil for three weeks
- 52:18Speaker 1: and my wife was pushed me around in a wheelchair.
- 52:21Speaker 1: Not bad, it goes, Can you get can you get
- 52:23Speaker 1: up on these crutches? Can you get up on these crutches?
- 52:26Speaker 2: I said, no, it hurts too bad.
- 52:32Speaker 1: She finally got me a phone, man, But I was,
- 52:35Speaker 1: you know, in the middle of working. Yeah, so now
- 52:37Speaker 1: I get this boot. You know, I'm going to work,
- 52:40Speaker 1: I'm flying places. I'm like, oh god, please, but now
- 52:44Speaker 1: it Then this came back real quick. That was a
- 52:47Speaker 1: little problem, but just good now yeah we're good. Yeah,
- 52:52Speaker 1: it's good.
