- 0:05Speaker 1: NFL Now is a production of the NFL in partnership
- 0:08Speaker 1: with I Heart Radio. The countdown the Super Bowl fifty
- 0:19Speaker 1: seven continues nine days away. Now and welcome into NFL
- 0:22Speaker 1: Now alongside Steve Whitch, I'm a Maurice. We are in
- 0:25Speaker 1: the NFL Network news room. What's the storyline you're looking
- 0:28Speaker 1: forward to most about next week? Steve? I mean, they're
- 0:30Speaker 1: just so many, but I mean it's just hard for
- 0:32Speaker 1: me not to get away with the media of the
- 0:34Speaker 1: two black quarterbacks, you know, Jalen Hurts of Patrick Mahomes,
- 0:37Speaker 1: first time it's ever happened in the Super Bowl. I
- 0:39Speaker 1: know you and Doug Williams are closed over. It was
- 0:41Speaker 1: making history so so so important for that story already
- 0:45Speaker 1: five years ago. It was when Doug Wims became the
- 0:46Speaker 1: first black quarterback to start and win a Super Bowl.
- 0:49Speaker 1: And the m v P pretty awesome. You know what
- 0:50Speaker 1: else was awesome was Derek performances last night in the
- 0:53Speaker 1: Pro Gool Games. Welcoming back to Las Vegas. That is
- 0:57Speaker 1: well began with the news right now. Derek Carr, he
- 1:00Speaker 1: put on a show, of course. Was bench last couple
- 1:02Speaker 1: of games for the Raiders in the season. Was a
- 1:05Speaker 1: legend there with Las Vegas and Oakland for how he
- 1:08Speaker 1: was the face of the franchise so many years. Well,
- 1:11Speaker 1: General manager Dave Ziggler, down at the Senior Bowl mobile
- 1:14Speaker 1: addressed Derek Carr in his future yesterday. Derek's a phenomenal
- 1:20Speaker 1: player too, and he's a phenomenal human being. And you know,
- 1:23Speaker 1: we're gonna obviously, we have some things, some dominoes to
- 1:25Speaker 1: fall and and you know, some things that we have
- 1:27Speaker 1: to look at relative to his situation in our quarterback
- 1:30Speaker 1: situation going forward in twenty three. But um, there's nothing, no,
- 1:33Speaker 1: no one, no no positions as important as a quarterback position.
- 1:37Speaker 1: And you all know that. Everybody knows that. And so
- 1:40Speaker 1: you know we're gonna be putting a lot of work, Um,
- 1:42Speaker 1: you know, put a lot of working on that front
- 1:44Speaker 1: and and kind of seeing how it all plays out here. Yeah,
- 1:47Speaker 1: I don't need a specific answer, but have you gotten interest?
- 1:50Speaker 1: If I was in this league and I saw what
- 1:52Speaker 1: happened to Derek, I'd be calling you, going, Dave, you
- 1:54Speaker 1: want to talk a little bit? You yeah, you know,
- 1:57Speaker 1: And and I think, um, here this week of the
- 1:59Speaker 1: Senior Bowl, obviously everybody's here, and so uh, you know,
- 2:02Speaker 1: this This is a good time to have those conversations.
- 2:05Speaker 1: There's gonna be people are interested in Derek Carr. There's
- 2:07Speaker 1: there's no there's no doubt about that. Ian Rappaport, Mike
- 2:12Speaker 1: Garret Folo joining us. Now, that was Pat Kerwin if
- 2:14Speaker 1: you heard on the series Sex Time Radio asking him, Hey,
- 2:17Speaker 1: if he was part of an organization, he'd be making
- 2:19Speaker 1: calls on Derek Carr. So what's the actual reality here
- 2:22Speaker 1: of that situation? In it does sound like there were
- 2:26Speaker 1: some talks among multiple teams Inmobile and you know, Dave
- 2:30Speaker 1: Zego with the general manager, could pick up the phone
- 2:32Speaker 1: and call people or could just walk to various suites
- 2:35Speaker 1: and have a conversations, and it sounds like the latter's
- 2:37Speaker 1: would ended up happening. There is interest. In my understanding
- 2:40Speaker 1: is there are at least a couple of teams, potentially
- 2:43Speaker 1: several teams who are at least interested in Derek Carr.
- 2:46Speaker 1: But it is complicated, Mike, because Derek Carr's contract becomes
- 2:50Speaker 1: fully guaranteed the next two years or this year, in
- 2:52Speaker 1: a little bit of next year, become fully guaranteed the
- 2:54Speaker 1: forty million dollars three days after the Super Bowl, So
- 2:57Speaker 1: What that would mean theoretically, is a team trading for
- 3:00Speaker 1: Derek Carr would have the fully guaranteed money in mid February,
- 3:05Speaker 1: but not be able to officially sign him until March.
- 3:09Speaker 1: So basically, the Raiders would have to carry his fully
- 3:11Speaker 1: guaranteed money until the official team takes over in March.
- 3:15Speaker 1: It's not impossible. We've seen teams do this. Carson Wentz,
- 3:18Speaker 1: I believe got traded in a similar situation. But it
- 3:22Speaker 1: does mean that it is complicated and everybody would have
- 3:24Speaker 1: to figure it out. So that probably drives this as
- 3:27Speaker 1: much as anything. But we will see what it does
- 3:30Speaker 1: sound like. At some point over the next couple of weeks,
- 3:32Speaker 1: news will be coming on Derek Carr. It makes it
- 3:35Speaker 1: harder if that money becomes guaranteed, and is what you're
- 3:38Speaker 1: trying to say, it's still you know, it's not top quarterback,
- 3:42Speaker 1: top starting quarterback money. It is still palatable for a
- 3:46Speaker 1: team to bring in Derek Carr, but you're right, it
- 3:48Speaker 1: does make things a little bit more difficult. And I
- 3:50Speaker 1: think that Derek Carr in this situation, from what I
- 3:53Speaker 1: can sense, is saying, well, they benched me and they're
- 3:55Speaker 1: moving on from me. Why would I make life easier
- 3:58Speaker 1: for them by pushing the deadline back. And if they
- 4:02Speaker 1: decide to not go that route to guarantee that money
- 4:05Speaker 1: and move on from him and allow him to become
- 4:06Speaker 1: a free agent, he gets a jump. Free agency doesn't
- 4:10Speaker 1: start for a couple of more weeks after that, So
- 4:12Speaker 1: that's to the benefit of Derek Carr to get out
- 4:14Speaker 1: there and as he phrase didn't talking to reporters out
- 4:17Speaker 1: there in Vegas quote, to be able to talk to
- 4:19Speaker 1: all my friends that means every team around the league,
- 4:22Speaker 1: and not just be a guy that is at the
- 4:24Speaker 1: mercy of the Raiders right now and not really sensing
- 4:27Speaker 1: his own market, but basically seeing if they can go
- 4:30Speaker 1: out and find a trade partner. I think Derek Carr
- 4:32Speaker 1: would like to have the leverage shift back to his
- 4:34Speaker 1: side by being a free agent. Yea, if he was
- 4:36Speaker 1: the only one available for a few weeks, certainly all
- 4:39Speaker 1: that leverage in the world would then shift to Derek Carr.
- 4:41Speaker 1: I and Mike, thank you both very much. And speaking
- 4:43Speaker 1: of car, we've been working over this story ever since
- 4:46Speaker 1: he was headed to the bench there in Las Vegas.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Will he reappear named as a substitute at the Pro
- 4:52Speaker 1: Bowl games for the a f C side, connecting with
- 4:54Speaker 1: Davante Adams. He also connected with our cam Wolf last
- 4:58Speaker 1: night ahead of the Pro Bowl games performance, Derek, Pro
- 5:03Speaker 1: Bowl very much ascribe to me the emotions of playing
- 5:08Speaker 1: this Pro Bowl in this building, given you've said your
- 5:11Speaker 1: goodbye to the Raiders. Absolutely, and it's it's been a
- 5:14Speaker 1: beautiful time though. I've gotten to see so many friends,
- 5:17Speaker 1: um that I've had relationships with now for a decade,
- 5:20Speaker 1: and it's been a lot of fun being back in
- 5:23Speaker 1: this building. I know, I know where the snacks are,
- 5:25Speaker 1: you know, I know where all the secret stashes are,
- 5:27Speaker 1: so I've been I've been been passing them out. Guys
- 5:30Speaker 1: are happy that I know what's going on around here.
- 5:32Speaker 1: I see you've got a NFL local hat. There got
- 5:35Speaker 1: my hat after we call it NFL player the car. Yeah,
- 5:39Speaker 1: they tell me that hat. I don't know. It was
- 5:41Speaker 1: just in my locker. So I just gonna rock my
- 5:44Speaker 1: hat today. Obviously, there's gonna be a lot of questions
- 5:49Speaker 1: about where you are with your future. What can you
- 5:51Speaker 1: tell us about what you know about what's next for you? Um?
- 5:55Speaker 1: You know, uh, I mean we've got choices, you know,
- 5:58Speaker 1: decisions to make, and UM, it's an exciting time. I
- 6:01Speaker 1: mean it really is. I'm thankful for my time here
- 6:04Speaker 1: in Las Vegas and in Oakland, UM, and I'll always
- 6:07Speaker 1: be thankful and grateful, but it comes to time when
- 6:10Speaker 1: it's just it's time to move on, and UM that's
- 6:12Speaker 1: this time. And so UM, I'm excited. I can't wait
- 6:15Speaker 1: to see where God takes us next. I'm a I'm
- 6:17Speaker 1: gonna give that city everything that I have, Um, but
- 6:20Speaker 1: for the for just one more time, you know, I
- 6:22Speaker 1: get to represent the Raters and uh, you know I'm
- 6:24Speaker 1: excited to do that for our fans and uh to
- 6:27Speaker 1: get to say goodbye in our stadium. UM, didn't know
- 6:30Speaker 1: how what what my next time in the stadium would be,
- 6:32Speaker 1: but for Bean the fourth Pro Bowl, that's pretty good time.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Al Right. So that was last night in Las Vegas.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Cam Wolf back with us live now in Las Vegas
- 6:41Speaker 1: as well as Steve and Jim. But Cam will start
- 6:43Speaker 1: with you. You had a chance to speak extensively with
- 6:46Speaker 1: Derek Carr. What else did he have to say about
- 6:48Speaker 1: his future? Yeah? Oh more. The big thing is that
- 6:51Speaker 1: he was content and excited about the future. He made
- 6:54Speaker 1: clear that he's moved on from the Raiders that is
- 6:57Speaker 1: not turning back. And he noted to me a couple
- 7:00Speaker 1: of times about his no trade claws and the fact
- 7:03Speaker 1: that February fift deadlines coming up. With his over forty
- 7:06Speaker 1: millions and guarantees, he made clear that he's gonna have
- 7:09Speaker 1: a lot of choices and he expects to have a
- 7:11Speaker 1: big say in his next team. He said, look, I
- 7:14Speaker 1: get to choose for once in my life where I
- 7:16Speaker 1: get to go. And so maybe a month ago he
- 7:19Speaker 1: was more angry. The car I saw this week is
- 7:21Speaker 1: more motivated and excited about what's next. He also just
- 7:25Speaker 1: shared with me how much he's been training throughout this
- 7:28Speaker 1: process five thirty am. He said he's been working out
- 7:30Speaker 1: to give the new team everything he's got. He said,
- 7:33Speaker 1: this whole period this year has reignited the flame and
- 7:36Speaker 1: me to be competitive and to win. And I asked
- 7:39Speaker 1: him about the Raiders ending. It was pretty abrupt and
- 7:42Speaker 1: there were some questions about how it was handled. He said, look,
- 7:45Speaker 1: I'm human. There was a lot that I would love
- 7:47Speaker 1: to say, but it doesn't help me. It doesn't fix anything.
- 7:50Speaker 1: So I'm just gonna keep loving people and try to
- 7:52Speaker 1: move on with my next team. He also did make
- 7:55Speaker 1: clear that himself, GM, Dave Ziggler, and his agent Tim
- 7:59Speaker 1: Younger have had conversations throughout this process, and he reiterated
- 8:02Speaker 1: that February fIF date that isn't going to change as
- 8:05Speaker 1: a dateline, dateline that he's looking forward to. So two
- 8:08Speaker 1: weeks some things could be happening, no question, he was
- 8:11Speaker 1: fired up last night. He had thirty one points there
- 8:13Speaker 1: for the a f C. I think that was a
- 8:15Speaker 1: high in that particular game. Steve, what do you think
- 8:17Speaker 1: about the bidding war that could happen for Derek carry
- 8:19Speaker 1: First of all, I love that Navy with Camp because
- 8:21Speaker 1: he could He said, you know, peace, Audio Smigan, I'm
- 8:25Speaker 1: going I can send so many different ways. But you know, look,
- 8:28Speaker 1: you know what we're talking about, these trade opportunities. I
- 8:31Speaker 1: don't see that happening. I mean, why would Derek Carr,
- 8:33Speaker 1: after the way things happen, allow the Raiders to get
- 8:35Speaker 1: compensation back to make their roster better with his departure.
- 8:40Speaker 1: So I would see him becoming more of a free agent.
- 8:42Speaker 1: There's any with him being released and then him negotiating
- 8:46Speaker 1: with the team where he wants to go. I mean,
- 8:49Speaker 1: you look at teams like Tennessee or maybe the Saints,
- 8:53Speaker 1: where he could be an ideal fit. Basically, the NFC
- 8:55Speaker 1: South needs quarterbacks. But Derek Carr is Mike and Ean mentioned.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Getting a head start on the process in mid February
- 9:02Speaker 1: might be able to allow him to pick his shots,
- 9:04Speaker 1: get his contract that's favorable, to let him recoup some
- 9:07Speaker 1: of that forty million that gets guaranteed on February m
- 9:11Speaker 1: So we'll see. But you know, Jim, I I don't
- 9:14Speaker 1: see a trade happening here in in any way, shape
- 9:17Speaker 1: or form. I don't see a team picking up that number,
- 9:19Speaker 1: and I don't see Derek Carr agreeing to let the
- 9:21Speaker 1: Raiders get better again on his behalf. No, not at all, Steve.
- 9:26Speaker 1: In fact, I talked to someone who's familiar with what's
- 9:28Speaker 1: going on, and this person said to me, there is
- 9:31Speaker 1: a less than one percent chance that Derek Carr gets traded.
- 9:35Speaker 1: So that tells you what's going on. And speaking to
- 9:37Speaker 1: your points, Steve about Derek helping the Raiders get stronger,
- 9:41Speaker 1: what's also implicit in that is he helps his new
- 9:44Speaker 1: team become weaker because they would have to give up
- 9:47Speaker 1: draft capital in terms of acquiring him. So no way
- 9:50Speaker 1: do I see a trade happening with this look. Derek
- 9:52Speaker 1: Carr is a very emotional and loyal guy. He didn't
- 9:55Speaker 1: like how it went down at the end, and so
- 9:57Speaker 1: as Cam said, he has moved on in his heart
- 10:00Speaker 1: and that is important to him. He has gotten by
- 10:02Speaker 1: this whole thing with the Raiders, because we remember there
- 10:04Speaker 1: was a time that he said he would never play
- 10:07Speaker 1: for another team. So that tells you how bad it
- 10:10Speaker 1: was at the end in terms of that split. But
- 10:12Speaker 1: he has moved on from it. As I understand it.
- 10:15Speaker 1: He has no plans to weave that no trade. He
- 10:18Speaker 1: has no plans to agree to a trade at this
- 10:20Speaker 1: point unless they were to send a couple of players
- 10:22Speaker 1: along with him, and I think we all know who
- 10:24Speaker 1: those players would be. And three days after the Super
- 10:28Speaker 1: bowls when that February fifteen deadline would happen. So certainly
- 10:31Speaker 1: caring about us, his brother is employed here by NFL
- 10:34Speaker 1: networking to give us all that whose super Bowl content
- 10:37Speaker 1: here with the Derek car saga as it continues. Jim Cam, Steve,
- 10:41Speaker 1: thank you all very much. New right now is our
- 10:45Speaker 1: NFL Insider report with Ian Rappaport might care fullow back
- 10:49Speaker 1: with us. Now we've talked about Damiko Ryan's being named
- 10:52Speaker 1: head coach of the Houston Texas, which means the forty
- 10:54Speaker 1: Niners have a defensive coordinator opening. Well more, can you
- 10:57Speaker 1: tell us about that? It seems every year or maybe
- 11:01Speaker 1: every other year, the forty Niners have a defensive coordinator
- 11:04Speaker 1: opening and it's one of the better coordinator jobs in
- 11:06Speaker 1: the NFL, and then that person goes on to be
- 11:08Speaker 1: a head coach, stated a couple of times recently, will
- 11:11Speaker 1: Steve Wilkes be the next one? Time? Will tell on
- 11:13Speaker 1: that one he is interviewing on Monday for their vacant
- 11:16Speaker 1: defensive coordinator job, taking over for Damiko Ryans who took
- 11:20Speaker 1: over for Robert Salomon. What has been really a little
- 11:23Speaker 1: bit of a head coach factory there for San Francisco
- 11:26Speaker 1: and for Steve Wilkes. You know, this would seem to
- 11:28Speaker 1: be obviously another opportunity to get his hat in a
- 11:31Speaker 1: place where he would be considered for future head coach openings.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Did not get the Carolina Panther's job despite doing a
- 11:37Speaker 1: great job as the interim. If this job in fact happens,
- 11:42Speaker 1: then it would put him in position as well. Chris
- 11:44Speaker 1: Harris from the Washington Commanders also recently interviewed there, So
- 11:47Speaker 1: a very highly coveted job there with San Francisco in
- 11:50Speaker 1: Baltimore seems to be a covenative job to work with
- 11:53Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson. Mike, what more can you tell us about
- 11:55Speaker 1: that search to work with Lamar Jackson? Also the stability
- 11:59Speaker 1: of a coaching staff and John Harball that's been there
- 12:01Speaker 1: for quite some time. Because there are some offensive coordinator
- 12:04Speaker 1: jobs where some folks are looking at and saying, well,
- 12:07Speaker 1: am I taking it for one year and then the
- 12:08Speaker 1: entire coaching staff is gonna be fired? That is likely
- 12:11Speaker 1: not going to be the case with the Baltimore Ravens
- 12:13Speaker 1: plus a former m v P at quarterback in Lamar Jackson. Uh,
- 12:18Speaker 1: provided they come to terms and some kind of agree,
- 12:19Speaker 1: that's another story whatever. For the meantime, the Ravens are
- 12:22Speaker 1: interviewing offensive coordinator candidates, including Todd Munkin, currently the offensive
- 12:26Speaker 1: coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Georgia, was a coordinator at
- 12:30Speaker 1: the NFL level with the Buccaneers, whom he's also interviewed
- 12:33Speaker 1: with in this cycle. He is having his second interview
- 12:36Speaker 1: today justin out In Uh, the Broncos offensive coordinator who
- 12:40Speaker 1: called plays the last couple of weeks. Somebody get the
- 12:42Speaker 1: phone there by the way, he will interview next week.
- 12:46Speaker 1: And who am I missing Ian Dave Canalis, the Seahawks
- 12:49Speaker 1: quarterbacks coach, because Ian reported that one earlier today. That's
- 12:52Speaker 1: why I splipped my mind that one was his. Uh.
- 12:54Speaker 1: He will have a second interview as well. Could have
- 12:56Speaker 1: some company. Eric b Enemy Uh is in the mix
- 12:59Speaker 1: in Baltimore, So maybe the Ravens wait till after the
- 13:01Speaker 1: Super Bowl to interview him in person. We shall see,
- 13:04Speaker 1: but right now it's monk in the building today. Can
- 13:06Speaker 1: Alice impressive with his work with Gino Smith this past season.
- 13:09Speaker 1: Of course, Russell Wilson in years past. Ian Rappaport, Mike
- 13:13Speaker 1: Carroll full of thank you very much keeping us in
- 13:14Speaker 1: the mix on all those coordinator openings. We still have
- 13:17Speaker 1: Cardinals and Colts head coach opportunities as well. I have
- 13:20Speaker 1: to keep an eye on for that. Neil Smith set
- 13:22Speaker 1: to join us here on NFL Now Former Chiefs star
- 13:27Speaker 1: Pass Rusher, two time champion with the Denver Broncos. He
- 13:30Speaker 1: set to join us soon here on NFL now Pro
- 13:43Speaker 1: Bowls Skills Challenged the water balloon launch. What a fun
- 13:47Speaker 1: night last night We're gonna have much more throughout the weekend,
- 13:50Speaker 1: of course, culminating with the Pro Bowl flag football competition.
- 13:54Speaker 1: But how much fun did they have last night with
- 13:57Speaker 1: the dodgeball and all that. Our Camp Wolf caught up
- 14:00Speaker 1: with Laramie Tonsul, the Texans star offensive tackle Larry me
- 14:06Speaker 1: congrats on your third Pro Bowl, different games this time.
- 14:09Speaker 1: What was the vibe out there playing some of these
- 14:12Speaker 1: childhood games for you? Man? We actually loved it. I
- 14:15Speaker 1: enjoyed this better than actually playing in the games. You know,
- 14:17Speaker 1: we play seventeen games, our bodies beat up. So just
- 14:19Speaker 1: to come here actually by with the guys and play
- 14:22Speaker 1: games that we all enjoyed a nice it's nice experience.
- 14:25Speaker 1: What was your favorite part of the of the evening.
- 14:27Speaker 1: I don't know. See the water balloon was my favorite part.
- 14:29Speaker 1: In time, I overthrew it, overthrew and then my team lost,
- 14:32Speaker 1: So I don't know. I enjoyed. I enjoyed the guys
- 14:34Speaker 1: catching up points. It was. It was a good thing.
- 14:36Speaker 1: When you see the other left tackles out there, how
- 14:38Speaker 1: do you stack yourself up amongst them? Come on, man,
- 14:41Speaker 1: you know I'm gonna put myself fat. I feel like
- 14:43Speaker 1: I'm the best left tackle in the league in my opinion.
- 14:45Speaker 1: But some great guys out there too. You got Trent Williams,
- 14:48Speaker 1: you got Andrew Thomas, buff of tho guys made it
- 14:50Speaker 1: all pro so kudos to them. But for me my opinon,
- 14:53Speaker 1: I feel like I'm the best off the tack out here.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Obviously a big offseason for the Texas. You guys just
- 14:57Speaker 1: hired a new head coach, Dmiko Ryan's what was your
- 15:00Speaker 1: reaction when we saw the new headball coach and let's go,
- 15:05Speaker 1: let us go, man. He brought good energy in the
- 15:07Speaker 1: building from what I see now, so I can't wait
- 15:09Speaker 1: to meet him. Obviously a couple of tough years to
- 15:12Speaker 1: the Texas. But what's your message Texas fans about what
- 15:15Speaker 1: they should expect going forward? Man, I'm trying to stay
- 15:17Speaker 1: here forever, you know what I mean. I want to
- 15:19Speaker 1: be a part of the franchise on a winning side too.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Hey you heard him say it. Damiko Ryan's new head
- 15:26Speaker 1: coach for the Houston Texans. He was officially introduced yesterday
- 15:30Speaker 1: along with Cal McNair, the owner and Nick Kiss serio
- 15:33Speaker 1: general manager. For much more on Demiko and his new
- 15:36Speaker 1: role as head coach of the Houston Texans. We welcome
- 15:38Speaker 1: back to Jim Trotter along with Steve White and Jim
- 15:40Speaker 1: when he saw Demiko getting hired. They've been out there
- 15:43Speaker 1: for a while now. What were your impressions of that,
- 15:45Speaker 1: what Houston Texans did. Um, truthfully, my my feelings were
- 15:51Speaker 1: mixed because on the one hand, I did not want
- 15:54Speaker 1: to see him go to a franchise where there has
- 15:57Speaker 1: been so much dysfunction and where black coaches have been
- 16:00Speaker 1: dumped on the last two years in terms of David
- 16:02Speaker 1: Culley getting the one and done and Levey Smith get
- 16:05Speaker 1: and one and done. But the more you talk to Demiko,
- 16:08Speaker 1: the more you understood why this worked and why this
- 16:11Speaker 1: was a good match in terms of him being able
- 16:13Speaker 1: to go home to the franchise where he was drafted,
- 16:16Speaker 1: where he cut his professional teeth, going home to the
- 16:18Speaker 1: city where his wife is from. Um, you know they
- 16:21Speaker 1: were there, I believe in the preseason as I understand it,
- 16:24Speaker 1: and as Demiko walked through the building, there was just
- 16:27Speaker 1: this sense of familiarity with everything and it felt right
- 16:31Speaker 1: for him. So when this job opened up, Um, it fits.
- 16:34Speaker 1: The other thing is I said earlier, if you take
- 16:36Speaker 1: away and exclude the dysfunction that has gone on with
- 16:38Speaker 1: the ownership in the front office recently. There's a lot
- 16:42Speaker 1: there to like in terms of having at least eleven
- 16:45Speaker 1: draft picks, having a lot of cap space, being able
- 16:48Speaker 1: now with the second pick in the draft to go
- 16:50Speaker 1: out and get a quarterback who they can hopefully build
- 16:52Speaker 1: their franchise around. Um And we know what Demiko is
- 16:56Speaker 1: going to do defensively, So I think when you put
- 16:58Speaker 1: all that together again, I had mixed emotions about it,
- 17:01Speaker 1: but ultimately I'm happy for Demiko because if you know
- 17:03Speaker 1: the man, he's a man of character and he's a leader,
- 17:06Speaker 1: and I believe that he will have an opportunity here
- 17:08Speaker 1: to get this thing right. Yeah, and Jim, you know,
- 17:11Speaker 1: I echo so many the same sentiments because I think,
- 17:13Speaker 1: you know, we've seen what's happened to Lovey Smith and
- 17:15Speaker 1: David Culley, and that's really robbed a lot of people,
- 17:18Speaker 1: including us, the wrong way. So hopefully with the six
- 17:20Speaker 1: year deal and Damiko Ryan's having the ties to the organization,
- 17:23Speaker 1: he gets the patients to turn things around that neither
- 17:26Speaker 1: of those two coaches did. But now as far as
- 17:29Speaker 1: the decisions being made, we just saw that interview that
- 17:31Speaker 1: camp Wolfe did with Larry me Tunsel. One of the
- 17:33Speaker 1: first things that borders Larry me Tunsen wants a new
- 17:35Speaker 1: contract and he is one of the best left tackles
- 17:38Speaker 1: in the NFL. You talked about the draft picks, it
- 17:40Speaker 1: is gonna be building a roster in Damiko Ryan's image. Look,
- 17:44Speaker 1: he's coming into a division the a f C South
- 17:46Speaker 1: that's wide open, and we've seen how quickly you can
- 17:49Speaker 1: turn things around. So if they do well in the draft,
- 17:51Speaker 1: use some of that cap money to build the proper
- 17:54Speaker 1: roster around a young quarterback. And we feel they're either
- 17:56Speaker 1: gonna draft with that number two overall pick or number
- 17:59Speaker 1: one if they've got to get the if they've got
- 18:01Speaker 1: a trade to go get that pick, then that's what
- 18:04Speaker 1: they have to do. But there is some opportunity down
- 18:06Speaker 1: with Houston with a great fan base and and just
- 18:09Speaker 1: a great situation to build things back to where they
- 18:12Speaker 1: were just a few years ago when they were a
- 18:14Speaker 1: continued perennial playoff contender, and coming off a season of
- 18:18Speaker 1: course with the forty Niners where he had that defense
- 18:20Speaker 1: ranked number one both in scoring and toty yardage, and
- 18:23Speaker 1: in talking to players throughout the last couple of months,
- 18:26Speaker 1: they all harped on the fact that yes he is
- 18:28Speaker 1: good at XS and o's. He has us ready to
- 18:30Speaker 1: play schematically, but a need even better leader and even
- 18:33Speaker 1: better person, and that's what they're getting in Houston, Steve Jim,
- 18:37Speaker 1: thank you both very much. Still will come here on NFL.
- 18:39Speaker 1: Now we have Neil Smith, the four more Chiefs and
- 18:43Speaker 1: Broncos legend, two time Super Bowl champ. Look at a
- 18:46Speaker 1: who that division rival badman Smith joins us next. Now
- 18:58Speaker 1: Patrick Mahomes, set to start his third Super Bowl in
- 19:02Speaker 1: his sixth season, pointing out to that super or both
- 19:05Speaker 1: fifties seven logo now on the uniform Patrick Mahomes, nine
- 19:09Speaker 1: days away from taking on the Philadelphia Eagles in Super
- 19:12Speaker 1: Bowl fifties seven, We're pleased to welcome in Neil Smith,
- 19:15Speaker 1: two times Super Bowl camp, former Chief's great, former Broncos great,
- 19:20Speaker 1: alongside Steve White here and your initial impressions, Neil, of
- 19:23Speaker 1: this Super Bowl fifty seven showdown between the Eagles and
- 19:26Speaker 1: Chiefs seems like it's a couple of evenly matched teams. Huh,
- 19:29Speaker 1: oh very much. Even um, you know, get my big
- 19:32Speaker 1: hats off to you know, the NFC side where Philadelphia
- 19:35Speaker 1: the way they came in this year been a number
- 19:37Speaker 1: one team, uh, and it led that throughout the whole year.
- 19:42Speaker 1: And it's a great matchup and you know, you got
- 19:43Speaker 1: one on both sides. And it's no, there's nothing about it.
- 19:47Speaker 1: That's why you can't pick who's gonna win and what's
- 19:49Speaker 1: gonna happen as far as uh, the score pretty much.
- 19:54Speaker 1: I mean that the line is at too and they
- 19:55Speaker 1: probably go to one of zero. Pretty good two teams,
- 19:59Speaker 1: all right. You know, you know you you're in Kansas City,
- 20:01Speaker 1: You're you're close to the team. Want to get something
- 20:03Speaker 1: close to your heart, and that's the defensive line play
- 20:06Speaker 1: of the Chiefs. Chris Jones, Frank Clark, Carlos Dunlap. How
- 20:10Speaker 1: do you think they fare against that offensive line in
- 20:13Speaker 1: the type of varied offense that the Eagles run. I'm
- 20:18Speaker 1: gonna tell you right now, it's gonna be a responsibility.
- 20:20Speaker 1: Is gonna be trust what's up front or with those
- 20:22Speaker 1: three guys, And they're gonna be challenges. They're probably the
- 20:25Speaker 1: biggest challenges that they're gonna have throughout you know, their
- 20:28Speaker 1: year and keeping contain of the quarterback. But I tell
- 20:31Speaker 1: you they rushed the pastor, and they they're very good
- 20:34Speaker 1: at what they do and and and I think if
- 20:36Speaker 1: they step up to the to the to the task,
- 20:38Speaker 1: and they have a very very good line offensive line,
- 20:41Speaker 1: so they have to they have a lot of things
- 20:43Speaker 1: in front of them to try to see what they
- 20:45Speaker 1: can do with them. Hey, Neal, and your first Super
- 20:47Speaker 1: Bowl win as member of the Denver Broncos. You guys
- 20:49Speaker 1: went against a playmaking quarterback and Brett Farve. What were
- 20:52Speaker 1: the keys to corralling him in that Super Bowl thirty
- 20:54Speaker 1: two matchup? Wow, Now you make me think way back,
- 20:58Speaker 1: we did have a plan. We did have a plan
- 21:02Speaker 1: against Brett Father and one of the things that we
- 21:04Speaker 1: wanted to do is make sure Brett Fog, you know,
- 21:05Speaker 1: push him to his left side because he was such
- 21:08Speaker 1: a great scrammer as Patrick Mahomes is, and we wanted
- 21:11Speaker 1: to keep him throwing the ball against his body. So
- 21:13Speaker 1: my thing was to build up high and let Brett
- 21:15Speaker 1: Fag go out the other side and throw against his body.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Was his number was very low, so we did a
- 21:20Speaker 1: very good job of that, and then we created some turnovers,
- 21:23Speaker 1: which was big in the game. And you know, our
- 21:25Speaker 1: offense was always there the whole year. It was a
- 21:28Speaker 1: very very good match up and we just wanted to
- 21:30Speaker 1: see those guys and because we heard so much about
- 21:33Speaker 1: him and we wanted to make sure that they was
- 21:36Speaker 1: to be beaten that day. So they showed up and
- 21:38Speaker 1: we did what we had to do as far as responsibility,
- 21:40Speaker 1: and we came up with the victory. You know, players
- 21:43Speaker 1: don't need any out of motivation other than the Super Bowl.
- 21:45Speaker 1: But when you've got Patrick Mahomes battling through that ankle,
- 21:49Speaker 1: practicing every day and showing that he's there for his teammates,
- 21:53Speaker 1: what does that mean to the players. Is they prepared
- 21:56Speaker 1: for a game on the stage. Well, you know, Patrick
- 22:00Speaker 1: has been a leader since since they one, I mean
- 22:02Speaker 1: since he stepped in here that held him back and
- 22:04Speaker 1: he became leadership. And you know around here we're taking
- 22:08Speaker 1: this for granted. But Patrick Mahomes got greatness in him.
- 22:10Speaker 1: I mean, it's a tough individual. No one knows how
- 22:13Speaker 1: but me how high InCor spring feel and how you
- 22:16Speaker 1: could go on it and it hindered you in a
- 22:18Speaker 1: certain situation. But you know what, when that a drone
- 22:21Speaker 1: they flow, Patrick had to make one play to make
- 22:24Speaker 1: that scramble to get out of bounds and well the
- 22:26Speaker 1: pain don't hurt after that when you see the field
- 22:28Speaker 1: goal be kicked in one and then get them into
- 22:31Speaker 1: the Super Bowl. So you have another week or two
- 22:33Speaker 1: to heal. The game is up and coming, and I
- 22:35Speaker 1: think that, Um, you know, we have a great leader
- 22:37Speaker 1: and everyone loves Pat Mahome. This is his town and
- 22:40Speaker 1: everybody bottles down to bathroom home. Patrick Mahomes one of
- 22:43Speaker 1: the more talented quarterbacks that we've ever seen. John Elways
- 22:46Speaker 1: certainly your quarterback there in Denver, one of those how
- 22:48Speaker 1: much inspiration did you guys draw when he scrambled and
- 22:51Speaker 1: did the helicopter play there in that Super Bowl. Well,
- 22:56Speaker 1: I'll tell you what it's. It's you know, it's places
- 22:58Speaker 1: to be made. John L. Would Mad made one when
- 23:00Speaker 1: I'm when I was with those and uh, it was
- 23:02Speaker 1: a short dial situation. He saw, he saw the goal,
- 23:05Speaker 1: he went for it and when he dove, you know,
- 23:07Speaker 1: thank god he helicopter towards the towards the end zone
- 23:11Speaker 1: and not a way because they probably spot the ball
- 23:13Speaker 1: beyond the line of game. But he made a great play,
- 23:17Speaker 1: you know, and that team that I can look back, man,
- 23:19Speaker 1: we made plays throughout the year time at the time,
- 23:22Speaker 1: at the time, and that's what it takes the Super Bowl.
- 23:24Speaker 1: When you have an opportunity to to make plays and
- 23:27Speaker 1: create turnals and alternal has become ports. It's exciting to
- 23:31Speaker 1: do and that's why we um. You know, that's why
- 23:35Speaker 1: people win the game at the end, turnovers with parts.
- 23:39Speaker 1: You know, you talk about turnovers and takeaways. You look
- 23:41Speaker 1: at the Chief's defense, the young guys on the back end,
- 23:44Speaker 1: the Joshua Williams, the rookies, the young players. Trent McDuffie,
- 23:49Speaker 1: what about the development the Steve Spagnolo has has had
- 23:52Speaker 1: with them for them to perform on the big stage
- 23:55Speaker 1: and how important is it for them to continue having
- 23:58Speaker 1: the poison that they've shown next week, well for the
- 24:03Speaker 1: second theary, it's gonna be definitely a great channel. I
- 24:05Speaker 1: think Steve done a great job of selling those guys
- 24:08Speaker 1: down that that's in the second spot and and developing
- 24:11Speaker 1: them two great players to come off the bench and
- 24:13Speaker 1: to rotate and to have um have some impact in
- 24:18Speaker 1: in the in the offense, I mean in the defense,
- 24:20Speaker 1: back secondary and UM, I'll tell you what, there's young
- 24:23Speaker 1: guys are cohoused them. They're gonna be very, very challenged
- 24:26Speaker 1: this week. Um, they stepped up to every challenge, and
- 24:29Speaker 1: it goes back and forward. You know, I think that
- 24:31Speaker 1: you know, they have an opportunity. They the balls are
- 24:33Speaker 1: strong to them, the balls that they can make. UM,
- 24:36Speaker 1: in this upcoming game, it's gonna be very very crucious
- 24:38Speaker 1: that they they really sit and have an opportunity to
- 24:42Speaker 1: to make those plays. You guys mentioned how deep the
- 24:44Speaker 1: Kansas City Chiefs pass rushes, but the Eagles also have
- 24:48Speaker 1: that same bragging right, which one do you think has
- 24:50Speaker 1: the edge here in the Super Bowl matchup? Well, I
- 24:53Speaker 1: would think that the Eagles probably have that edge match up.
- 24:56Speaker 1: You know, they're they're very healthy, they're very physical, um
- 24:59Speaker 1: in the secondary, and you know that whole unit been together. Um,
- 25:02Speaker 1: they're very healthy at the time they're supposed to do
- 25:05Speaker 1: and they have brick rushers. I think that this game
- 25:07Speaker 1: can go, and this game can go anyway. You know,
- 25:10Speaker 1: I know they're gonna be plays to be made, but
- 25:13Speaker 1: I'll still lean on that. You got to make plays,
- 25:15Speaker 1: you gotta you gotta get off the field on third down,
- 25:17Speaker 1: and you have to move the sticks on on offense
- 25:19Speaker 1: and score touchdowns. So it could be a very very
- 25:22Speaker 1: good defensive game, and then it could be where the
- 25:25Speaker 1: defense just can't stopping and they're gonna be upter the
- 25:27Speaker 1: office to make the more play no. You know, you
- 25:30Speaker 1: see that changed the Pro Bowl from the Pro Bowl
- 25:32Speaker 1: game itself to the Pro Bowl games with a lot
- 25:34Speaker 1: of throwing contest, water balloon catching contest, flag football. What
- 25:38Speaker 1: are your thoughts about the new format? It's just fun, guys.
- 25:42Speaker 1: I mean, these guys, you know, we're a kid at hearts,
- 25:45Speaker 1: you know, as we first start how to how to
- 25:48Speaker 1: learn how to play. These are the games that they're
- 25:49Speaker 1: bringing back. And you know what, the guys are having fun.
- 25:51Speaker 1: They are excited about it, just getting participating in it.
- 25:55Speaker 1: Dodgeball and water balloons, throwing out and throwing eggs next,
- 25:59Speaker 1: what's gonna be next? Guys. But it's so good to
- 26:01Speaker 1: see that they're out there making things happen and they
- 26:04Speaker 1: have a love for it. And and I hope nobody
- 26:07Speaker 1: don't get hurted jumping off the tables. But you know,
- 26:10Speaker 1: it keeps the guys out of horn. You know, they're
- 26:12Speaker 1: still at the end of the day, they're still big
- 26:13Speaker 1: old kids playing the game. Hey, would you trade any
- 26:15Speaker 1: of your trips to Hawaii for participating in something like this, Well,
- 26:21Speaker 1: I love for white Man, you know. That's that's good.
- 26:26Speaker 1: That's where I started at it. Man. I just couldn't
- 26:28Speaker 1: trade that for the world man too, because I know
- 26:30Speaker 1: after practice, I can bring my kids to the beach
- 26:32Speaker 1: and and have fun and and and enjoy the atmosphere
- 26:36Speaker 1: and great weather at all times. So if they can
- 26:39Speaker 1: have a Biddle stadiument back there, please do and bring
- 26:41Speaker 1: the probo back. You can do you can do those
- 26:44Speaker 1: you can do those things on the North Shore, and
- 26:46Speaker 1: you can do those games on the North Shore and
- 26:47Speaker 1: bring it back and bring it back to the ROAs
- 26:49Speaker 1: football on the beach. There you goal Smith, Thank you
- 26:51Speaker 1: so much for your time. Appreciate the insight. We look
- 26:54Speaker 1: forward to catching you up down the road. Thank you guys.
