- 0:36SPEAKER_00: I acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on which this podcast is recorded, the Warren Tree people of the Coolin Nation, and pay my respects to their elders, past, present, and emerging.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: I acknowledge them as the original storytellers of this land.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Welcome to this week's episode of the podcast Rebuilding Life After a Divorce You Didn't Want, particularly navigating Christmas and the holidays.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Given we are so close to Christmas, in the middle of the holiday season, I'm going to speak about navigating a divorce you didn't want or didn't choose through that lens.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: However, a lot of what I share will be completely applicable or transferable to any other life stages.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: So yeah, this episode is really for anyone navigating life, especially Christmas and the holiday season after a divorce they didn't want.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: A divorce that perhaps wasn't a mutual decision or one that came as a shock or a surprise.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Even if you did ultimately choose the divorce knowing it was for the best, but it was not really what you wanted or hoped for, and you're still wounded, still healing, still moving through the weeds, this time of year can be really, really hard.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: It can be a little like poking sticks into wounds that you know haven't yet healed because this time of year is so often associated with family and celebration and togetherness and happiness and joy.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: It can activate you in all the ways, right?
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: Bringing up things you'd maybe rather not look at, or even thought you'd moved through, or healed, or worked through.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: And I wanted to open this episode with a message that a client sent me around this time last year.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: And she said, I've always loved Christmas, but this year I'm absolutely dreading it.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: All I feel is sadness, loss, and heartbreak, or I feel nothing, as if the betrayal and the heartbreak have drained all the joy from this season that I once loved so much.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: Like that's been taken away from me too.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: So powerful.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: She's done her work, she's reclaimed herself, her sense of self, and really already reclaimed Christmas for 2024.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: And I'm recording this, it's still November, but I know her Christmas tree is already up in her new home, and that's a space she's really consciously and lovingly created for herself and her kids.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: So healing the heartbreak is possible, moving through the heavy, hard stuff is possible, good things are coming, even if for you right now, this year, it feels a really, really long way away.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: As I said earlier, this time of year can really and probably will amplify all the big feelings, even if you're further down the track in terms of healing from your divorce.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: It's a tricky season to navigate.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: And you know, personally, it's a tricky season to navigate.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: We've got all sorts of different moving parts trying to get our family to create a space for our family this year at Christmas time.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: So um it gets easier.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: I'm not deep in the grief, but there are tricky parts to it, right?
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: And if you are, if it's fresh for you, it will amplify all those big emotions: the grief, the sadness, the anger, frustration, bitterness, resentment, loneliness, insecurity, whatever it is for you.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: It's okay to acknowledge and honour those feelings as they come.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: In fact, it's really important to honor and acknowledge and allow them, right?
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: And while you're sitting in the heartache, remember that it is also possible to move through, to navigate this season with grace, with self-compassion, and with really deep care for yourself.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: So here are some of my thoughts, some client strategies to help you care for yourself and move through this time.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: The first, and I talk about it often, it's permission to feel exactly and all of what you feel.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: You don't have to be happy just because it's Christmas or the holidays.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: The joy of this season at this time, this year, might just feel completely out of reach, and that's okay.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: Acknowledge those big emotions, the grief, the anger, the numbness, or even you know, the relief, and allow yourself to sit with those big feelings, those emotions without judgment.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: Don't put pressure on yourself to be happy during the holidays.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: When you have legitimate reasons for being happy, absolutely acknowledge them and also allow yourself to be sad.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: Give yourself permission to feel all of and exactly what you feel.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: You are going through something incredibly difficult and perfectly normal, fine, okay to acknowledge that.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: But when those little moments of peace or happiness do pop up, do come embrace them.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: Give yourself permission to feel the joy, to feel peace, to feel whatever it is that you feel, as well as allowing yourself to feel sad, to grieve, and to process your emotions.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Give yourself permission to not feel joyful.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: And also give yourself permission to be inconsistent.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: You know, this is a really hard time.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: So it's okay to be a little flaky, to be inconsistent with plans, with returning calls or responding to messages, with your communication, with showing up.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: You don't have to be at every event, and you don't have to show up all the time.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: It's a time also to borrow from others, and by that I mean borrow their strength, borrow their resilience, their grace, their courage, their compassion.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: Allow yourself love from your trusted, safe people and allow them to show up for you.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: It's a time to lean in and lean on these people.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: You don't have to do all of this all by yourself.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: You can allow people in, let them be there for you.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: You don't have to be strong all by yourself and all the time, or be the strong one first.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: Let others be that for you.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: Lean on them, borrow their strength while you gather up your own, while you regroup.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: So accept help.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: If if your trusted people offer their help, their presence, let them allow them, allow yourself to receive, allow others in to hold and support and help you.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: It's important to be mindful of who you share your heart with, of course.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: But if someone is genuinely offering support, offering to help you, accept it.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: It can soothe your heart when you let others in, when you let others lighten this load, even if it's just for a little while.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: It reminds you that there is still good.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: Accepting help and allowing others in can be one of the glimmers of light when you feel you're really stuck in the sadness.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: Allow space also for grief.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: It's hard to hold both, right?
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: It's hard to hold space for your grief and allow yourself happy to be happy and to feel joy.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: It's like I've spoken about it before, and Rio Richards, grief coach, who I interviewed a while back for the podcast, talks about holding each emotion in your hands.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: So on the one hand, there is grief and sadness, hurt, pain.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: On the other hand, there is light and love and joy and happiness.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: And when you bring both hands together and place them over your heart, there is space for both to exist.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: So allow space for your grief.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: And if you are grieving because of betrayal, because of infidelity, the holiday season can feel particularly brutal because of that idea.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: It should be happy, we should all be together, it's all happy families, right?
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: You might be facing the fresh pain of a recent betrayal, or you might be dealing with an older betrayal that happened around this time of year.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: It may not have occurred during the holidays, but you may have found out about it around this time of year, and the emotions rise up again, right?
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: The emotions are still painful and acute because this season stirs up nostalgia, which can amplify your grief.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: You know, maybe for you though, there wasn't an affair or a betrayal, but the separation was still not something you chose or you wanted.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: So even without a betrayal and infidelity, the grief can be just as deep, especially when this time of year was once, you know, filled with happy memories and traditions that now feel a bit tainted.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: So allowing space for all of that is important.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: And also focus on those small glimmers, the small glimmers of joy or peace or happiness or excitement.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: If you have children, lean into their wonder, their excitement, their laughter, curiosity, and ability to find magic in the smallest of things.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: And yes, I'm talking about Christmas and the holiday season here, but this is also helpful and true regardless of what time of year it is.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: Let your kids anchor you, let their joy and excitement anchor you in the present, helping you pause and be where your feet are rather than churning, ruminating on the past or future tripping and spiralling into all the what ifs and what's coming in the future, right?
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: Try even just in small pockets of time to be fully present and beyond children, notice and acknowledge those simple pleasures around you and in your day-to-day life.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: Warm cup of tea or coffee in your hands, the sunlight streaming through the window on your face, feet on the ground, bare feet on the ground, whatever it is for you.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: These glimmers, these small glimmers, are your reminders that yes, joy and grief can exist side by side, and good things are coming.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: They won't completely wipe out or erase the pain or the hard parts, but they can help you tap into peace and connection, grinding you in the present, which then helps you look toward a future.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: So let them anchor you in the moment, in the present, and fully experience where you are.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: This can be a really busy time of year.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: So set your intentions, know what you want, establish clear boundaries, and be prepared for some tricky or hard conversations.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: The time of year is busy, it brings social events, gatherings.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: So if you know you'll be in situations where people might ask you about your divorce, they might comment on your situation, or even overshare their own thoughts, opinions, feelings about it.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: It's really helpful to prepare yourself in advance.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: So set your own personal intention for how you want to be, how you want to show up at these events.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: Be prepared.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: Write down some short, clear responses that can help you set and hold your boundaries, a bit like elevator pitch lines, and write them down on your phone or on a piece of paper so that they are really clear in your mind.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: I'm not comfortable sharing with that, sharing that right now.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: I'd prefer to not talk about this today.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: Um, thank you for caring.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: I'm focusing on where we are right now and enjoying today.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: Little catchphrases that you can trot out when somebody opens a conversation where you think they're going to comment on your situation, your divorce, offer an opinion, advice.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: People think they're being helpful and they're not, right?
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: People think they're being helpful and it really can be quite harmful and detrimental to you.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: So think about how you're going to respond in the moment and have some things ready.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: You can also send, you know, a text or an email ahead of time to, I guess, manage expectations.
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: You know, just a heads up, Adi, Sarah, this is how I'd like to approach the day.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: Um, what you're okay with discussing or not discussing, you know, establish your boundaries beforehand because protecting your energy and your space is a gift that you can give yourself.
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: And after an event where perhaps there was a conversation that you were uncomfortable with, something happened, something came up and needs addressing, send a message.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: Thanks for your concern.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: Next time I'd really like it if we could avoid speaking about X or Y.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: Thank you for trying to be supportive, but what I really need is X.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: So be really clear and intentional about how you show up and be prepared to have some awkward or challenging conversations.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: Also, give yourself permission to say no.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: Free yourself to say no, no thank you to obligation, especially at this point in your separation, divorce, relationship breakdown journey.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: You don't have to follow the rules.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: You don't have to follow the usual holiday rules.
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: So it's a real invitation to own your holiday season by doing what feels right and supportive and nourishing for you.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: There is no rule that says you have to follow the usual traditions or put on a brave face for anyone if that doesn't feel supportive or right for you.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: So let go of the pressure to meet expectations, other people's expectations, and really get clear and focus on what feels right to you.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: Say no gently, firmly, no thanks to obligations, to events, to spaces, even to people that don't feel supportive or nourishing.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: Make your well-being top of the list by freeing yourself to say no, by creating space for the things that really truly matter.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: Let go of that pressure to do what's expected, to say yes to everything, and instead intentionally honour what you most need.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: You get to redefine the holiday season because this year doesn't look like it did, right?
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: It doesn't look like it used to or is supposed to or you thought it might.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: So it's an opportunity to stop trying to make it, stop trying to make it look the same, allow it to be different because it is.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: You know, wrangling things to fit into an idea, a version of life and family that doesn't exist anymore can actually exacerbate your pain, make things worse, make things more challenging.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: So let go a little.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: And this is applicable, yes, to Christmas and the holidays, but it's also applicable to life more broadly as you move through separation, relationship breakdown, divorce, and reorganise your life, your life afterwards.
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: You get to redefine things, you get to let go a little.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: If the themes in this episode are resonating with you, if it's bringing up things that you would like to explore on a deeper level with me, you can book a free intro call via the link in the show notes and we can discuss coaching options.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: I would love to support you.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: And now back to this week's episode.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: And when we're talking about Christmas, it's also important to look at the traditions and think about those and let go of those that really no longer serve you.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: This year you get to release the need to recreate exactly the past.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: If old traditions feel painful, if they bring up all the hurt, let them go.
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: Start new ones that reflect where you are now.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: You know, whether it's volunteering, whether it's traveling, whether it's not spending Christmas with your extended family, whether it's celebrating in some entirely new way, focus on what feels right and nourishing and supportive for you, not what you've always done and not what others expect or want you to do.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: The next thing I want to share about navigating this season after, or just navigating life, I guess, after a separation, divorce that you didn't want is about presence, finding presence.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: And I touched on this a little bit earlier.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: So even as those big emotions rise up, maybe the grief washes over you, or the or the rage just rises up to the surface, look for moments or ways to ground yourself.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: You know, it can be as simple as taking some slow deep breaths, box breathing, a quiet walk in nature, bare feet on the ground, um, slapping your hands against the wall, whatever it is, to bring yourself back to yourself, come back to yourself and soothe yourself in ways that work for you.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: So it's an invitation to you to pay attention, pay attention to yourself, notice what you're feeling and what you need.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: It's about you know being the center, being your own center and centering yourself in the moment, being attuned to yourself so that you can actively choose what do I need today?
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: What do I need in this moment?
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: What am I feeling?
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: And what message does that feeling want me to hear?
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: So if it's the holidays, how can I bring presence to the season without letting all the big emotions take over?
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: How can I acknowledge them but still find presence?
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: How can I hold some perspective, some balance?
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: You know, acknowledge that the hard stuff, the pain, the heartbreak, it will ease, it will pass, and in time, things will be different in ways you might not be able to see.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: So, how can you bring yourself back to the moment and be present and find presence?
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: The next thing I want to speak to is a hard truth, and that is that you have to let go of the marriage, the relationship that you thought you had.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: It's a hard truth, right?
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: It's painful and hard to accept, but the marriage you thought you had wasn't what it seemed, or you didn't acknowledge what it was, or you weren't allowed to see the truth of it by the other person who is in the relationship.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: But the marriage you thought you had was different to the marriage you actually had, or it wouldn't have ended.
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: Grieve the relationship, absolutely, yes.
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: Grieve that future you once envisioned that you thought you were living into, but you can only move forward, you can't go back, and a part of acknowledging that, accepting that is letting go.
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: And maybe your marriage, like mine, wasn't all bad, but it wasn't what you thought it was.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: If there was betrayal, if there was an affair, if there was infidelity, the marriage you thought you had for at least some part wasn't the marriage you actually had.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: And that can be really hard to face, it can be really hard to accept that truth, that reality, especially at this time of year when we are bombarded by the media with all the happy family stuff.
- 21:25SPEAKER_00: You know, maybe from your perspective, your marriage was okay, it was great, you were happy, you had a good marriage, a good relationship, but the other person, they he or she didn't, and so really it wasn't.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: Reframing here is important.
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: Your separation, your divorce wasn't actually the ending or the end of something that was really good and healthy and right.
- 21:49SPEAKER_00: It was the end of something that wasn't quite right, something that was a little bit broken, even if you couldn't see the cracks.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: You didn't have the marriage, you thought.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Had you didn't have the partner you thought you had, it's time to let it go without blame, without shame, and I mean self-blame, without shame, without judgment, without self-judgment, without guilt.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: Because even though it may not feel like it right now, even though it's hard to see or feel into or believe, maybe this divorce, maybe this relationship breakdown, maybe this separation can actually be a gift of reinvention, of reclamation, of new opportunities, new growth, and a chance to get really clear on who you are, who you want to grow into, and to redefine the life that you want to be living.
- 22:43SPEAKER_00: I spoke at the beginning of this episode about loss, feeling a sense of loss.
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: And for some of my clients, and some of you, this will be amplified as we head towards Christmas through the holiday season.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: There's a loss of a sense of self, of who you thought you were, the life you thought you might be living, a loss of almost a loss of faith in the safety of the world, in the predictability of our life.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: Because the world, the life you've created and believed in has crumbled or been taken away.
- 23:18SPEAKER_00: Divorce brings with it really obvious losses, the end of the relationship, the partnership, the marriage, but there are also the secondary losses, the ones that kind of sneak up on you, and they feel just as devastating, especially at tender times, Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year, birthdays, significant events or dates throughout the year, right?
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: And you come out thinking, what now?
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: Who am I now?
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: You've not only lost the relationship, but also the version of yourself that existed within that relationship.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: You're left in a really unfamiliar space, it's disorienting, and you realize that what you've lost is you.
- 24:00SPEAKER_00: You've lost a sense of you.
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: There's also letting go of the life you thought you'd have, the grief in letting go of the future you believed in, the trust you had in how things would unfold, and you may even doubt your ability to make decisions, trust yourself, trust your gut, trust your judgment, and you might feel really untethered, uncertain, unsure.
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: I think I've said it before, like the ground beneath you has crumbled away.
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: Um, making decisions, even what to buy someone for Christmas, can be really difficult.
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: You know, it can feel like your entire world has changed and you don't know who you are anymore.
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: It's hard and it's heartbreaking and it's really deeply challenging, but it's also an opportunity to create version 2.0 of yourself to consciously choose, not just go with the flow of life and a relationship and a partner who perhaps hasn't allowed you to fully expand into who you could be.
- 25:00SPEAKER_00: And so, if this is you, I would invite you to borrow a little bit of the magic and wonder that is the holiday season and see where or how you can sprinkle a little bit of that back into your life.
- 25:13SPEAKER_00: How can you gift yourself a little bit of that?
- 25:16SPEAKER_00: How can you find, yes, the space to honour your honour your grief while also giving yourself permission to still feel the magic and the joy?
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: It may not be the Christmas or holiday season you wanted or you expected, but know that you are worthy of happiness and love and light and laughter, even if it looks a little different this year than you thought it might.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: And in closing, I want to loop back finally to my client.
- 25:46SPEAKER_00: Because a few months on from that Christmas message, she sent me another one in which she said, While I would never wish it on anybody, and I never want to experience that depth of pain myself again, I can honestly say that the tidal wave of my divorce was the worst thing to ever happen to me, and also the best.
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: I know I'm not fully through the mess yet, but I also know that through our work together, I had to lose what I thought I wanted, who I thought I was, to get really clear on what matters most to me, who I want to become, the version of me I want to return to, the version of me I want to grow into, and to deeply, fully, and truthfully honour all of that for myself.
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: And so if this season is hard for you, whether you're listening at Christmas or another time of year, know that that's possible for you too.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: And if you would like deeper support to move through a divorce perhaps you didn't want, let's talk about how coaching with me can support you.
- 27:04SPEAKER_00: You can book a free intro call via the link in my show notes.
- 27:08SPEAKER_00: And if you know someone who is having a hard time navigating the breakdown of a relationship, a divorce that they didn't want, please share this episode with them in support and solidarity.

- 27:37SPEAKER_00: I hope this has been supportive for you.
- 27:39SPEAKER_00: Thanks for sharing your listening time with me.
