Transcript
- 0:00Bonus time every year at the USTFCCCA convention down in
- 0:05December, we do a live podcast event where we sit down with
- 0:08coaches from around the country for 5:00-ish minutes and talk
- 0:11about a certain topic. This year, December of 2024, we
- 0:15sat down with coaches to talk about the NCAA, what's going on
- 0:18with the NIL, transfer portal, roster caps, all those kind of
- 0:22good things. And there's some interesting
- 0:23feedback. And tidbits.
- 0:25From everyone who chose to sat down with us.
- 0:27So here we are, the audio version of that.
- 0:29You can catch the video version over on YouTube.
- 0:31Just search up the GAL Athletics podcast and look for our live
- 0:34events content and you'll find the three that we've done
- 0:3720/24/2023 2020 2 and we'll do it again in 2020. 5 All right,
- 0:44we, you know, we basically just have the same people over and
- 0:48over again. He was going to talk without a
- 0:52microphone. I know how how he operates.
- 0:54You got to get a little bit closer here.
- 0:56Yeah. I love it.
- 0:57I love it. Start out by introducing
- 0:58yourself, please. Jim Stracker, I'm the director
- 1:01of tracking cross Country at the.
- 1:03University and I had the same issue last year speak up just a
- 1:06little bit for me. I use your like command coach
- 1:09voice here for me. All right, let's redo that my
- 1:11name. Is Jim Stracker.
- 1:12I'm the director of Tracking Field on the cross country at
- 1:15the University of. Washington, I love it.
- 1:17My favorite thing when I came to visit you.
- 1:19It seems like many, many years ago, because it was before
- 1:21COVID, the the the Virginia's for lovers sign that you guys
- 1:25had on middle of campus. And then I'll never get over the
- 1:28way your track is set up to where you have like, I think
- 1:30it's the sophomore dorms or whatever that just like
- 1:32literally overlook like lane 8. Still one of the coolest, most
- 1:35unique things I've ever seen. I love that.
- 1:37Oh yeah, we're our track is the. Center of a piece of camp?
- 1:43Yeah, for any kid. That goes to any class or any
- 1:47activity on camp. That's so cool.
- 1:48I love that. All right, so this year we've
- 1:49got a theme of what we're asking each guest that sits down with
- 1:52us. And thank you so much for being
- 1:53here. You get to take this any
- 1:55direction you want because there's a lot of directions to
- 1:57take here. What's your thoughts, opinions
- 1:59on all this stuff that's going on with the NCAA as it
- 2:02specifically as it relates to track and field?
- 2:04What's what's think what's going on there being.
- 2:12Kind of an old school coach. Kind of breaks my heart that
- 2:19we're getting away from the large.
- 2:21Team right participation part. Of it.
- 2:35It's hard to even imagine that right now.
- 2:37Right, right, right. You could also say we used to be
- 2:3910 and 12, and that has gone by the wayside.
- 2:42Yeah, exactly. And so in some ways, I would
- 2:45hope that to, you know, reflect the number of these conferences
- 2:50that we would go with better, more scoring.
- 2:53Kind. Of similar, yeah.
- 2:56And that way, you know, there was more opportunities for kids
- 2:59to participate, more opportunities for kids to
- 3:00scoring conference championships and then have the opportunity to
- 3:05have larger, more well-rounded teams.
- 3:08So even at the Division Three level, you're not head in the
- 3:11sand saying, oh, this is this is Division One thing.
- 3:13It's not going to affect us in any form or fashion.
- 3:15You kind of know something, you don't know maybe what, but
- 3:18something's going to affect Division 3.
- 3:21Yeah. Do you foresee?
- 3:23I, I believe This is why I'm kind of asking this question.
- 3:26With the roster caps that are coming on the Division One side,
- 3:29there's still, you know, the track and field on the high
- 3:31school when you add boys and girls together is easily the
- 3:34biggest participation sport over basketball, football, etcetera.
- 3:37So there's still a lot of need for college facilities.
- 3:41Do you foresee whether it's larger rosters or even this may
- 3:46seem like a bad, but I don't mean this in a bad way.
- 3:49Higher quality coming right out of high school to you, we think.
- 3:52That's. Going to be the.
- 3:54Case talking to my counterparts in Division Three, even talking
- 3:57to other. Coaches in other sports.
- 3:59Right. And where's that?
- 4:04Opportunity going. To be.
- 4:06Yeah, so it. May be a few.
- 4:10Years, right? Yeah, but.
- 4:13You know, Division Three could really change the landscape.
- 4:17Bro, you have heard me say this a lot of times.
- 4:20Maybe Division 3 has the best coaches around 'cause I know
- 4:24what these kids are at a high school.
- 4:26That's not not derogatory. It's just where we are with our
- 4:28levels. But go look at D3 nationals.
- 4:31Holy cow, you guys are coaching your butts off.
- 4:34I, I, I couldn't coach in that level and I coached in the SEC
- 4:37back in the day. It's unbelievable.
- 4:39What Division Three and all NAIA, JUCO.
- 4:41It's really quite amazing what you guys are getting it done on
- 4:44the track and in the field, man. Thanks to guys like you.
- 4:49That really give. Us the opportunities to put this
- 4:53race for, you know, out. On the platform.
- 4:57Thank you. Yeah, I appreciate that.
- 4:58That means a lot. All right, so we rerun this
- 5:01podcast as we go into next year's convention.
- 5:03So this will someone is going to be listening right now in
- 5:05December of 2025. So we're going to put you on the
- 5:07spot. What's your prediction for
- 5:09something that's going to happen over this track season?
- 5:12You could be it could be Lynchburg specific, it could be
- 5:15world champs. It doesn't have to be.
- 5:17It could be world record. It could be you're going to set
- 5:20your 200 meter. Maybe you are going to set your
- 5:22200 meter score. Record 1 prediction that we get
- 5:24to check next December to see how how good you were or not.
- 5:27Well, I would. Say after last year's Olympics,
- 5:30that's going to be. A hard yeah world.
- 5:34Championship. You know these?
- 5:36Athletes always come to to play crazy.
- 5:38The biggest? Prediction.
- 5:43Is that the disappointment that Noah Miles had?
- 5:49Yeah. So bounce back from Noah.
- 5:50Yeah, OK. And I still think it may be a
- 5:52far. Stretch for some world.
- 5:57Record making 100, but maybe in the two yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:01The right race right off the yeah.
- 6:02And what's interesting, and I love it.
- 6:03I think it's good for our sport is as great as Noah is and
- 6:06that's awesome. He's got some competition.
- 6:08It's not just Noah. There's other people that are
- 6:10running out of their minds and I think that makes Noah better and
- 6:12others better as well. That's a good prediction.
- 6:15We can check to see how well that one is.
- 6:16If he doesn't win both 100 and 200 and a world record, what is
- 6:22it, 19? No.
- 6:24No, 1914 or 19. That's so stupid.
- 6:28I mean, that's just crazy. We remember 1932.
- 6:31Like, like, like we can like know where we were, you know,
- 6:33when we saw. Yeah, that's our 911.
- 6:35Like, where were you, 1932? Oh, I know exactly where I was.
- 6:38I love it. Specker.
- 6:39Thank you so much, man. You know, I've had the great
- 6:42privilege to be able to coach with you in the same athletic
- 6:45department and seeing you go through different schools.
- 6:48And you know, your time at Lynchburg, this is a compliment.
- 6:53You were made to be a Division Three coach and, and some people
- 6:56would take that as a, as a slam. And you know me well enough that
- 6:59I, it's not a slam for me. Your love for athletes, it don't
- 7:04matter if they're running 20 minutes for two miles, 10
- 7:07minutes, 5 minutes. You just love improving young
- 7:11people and, and competing, win or lose, you just love to
- 7:14compete. And I'd love to see that in you,
- 7:16and I'd love to see that in your athletes and your coaching
- 7:18staff. Yeah, you deserve it, brother.
- 7:20Thank you so much. Thanks for being on the show,
- 7:21man. Thank you, brother.
- 7:22Appreciate you. Love you.
