- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Hope that you are doing well
- 0:18today. We are in Psalm 130, Psalm 130
- 0:23and this is another one of the song of a sense.
- 0:26These are the road trip songs for as the children of Israel 3
- 0:28* a year are going up to Jerusalem for the various feasts
- 0:32that God has for them. And this one is actually one of
- 0:36the more well known song of a sense.
- 0:39There's a old classic hymn that goes something like out of the
- 0:47temps. I cry to you, Lord, hear my
- 0:52desperate cry more than the watchman waits for in time.
- 1:00And then I don't remember how the end of that goes.
- 1:02If you're like, oh, the first part of that sounded kind of
- 1:04good, You can look it up. It's the titles just out of the
- 1:08depths. I cry to you, and I've heard
- 1:11some beautiful renditions of that.
- 1:14And so I encourage you to go listen to that.
- 1:16There's also a great song by Keith and Kristen Getty called I
- 1:21Will Wait for You from Psalm 130 that you can find on, you know,
- 1:27anywhere you listen to music. I've attached it in the show
- 1:30notes. Shane and Shane actually have a
- 1:32tremendous version of it. So want to encourage you be
- 1:38listening to those. And those will help you to get
- 1:40to know and embody and really feel the truth of God's Word
- 1:46even as we are learning about it today.
- 1:48So let's read through Psalm 130 and see what the Lord has.
- 1:53Verse #1 Out of the depths I call to you, Yahweh.
- 1:57Lord, listen to my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my
- 2:01cry for help. Yahweh, if you kept an account
- 2:05of iniquities, Lord, who could stand?
- 2:09But with you there is forgiveness, so that you may be
- 2:12revered. I will wait for Yahweh.
- 2:15I wait and put my hope in His Word.
- 2:19I wait for the Lord more than Watchmen for the morning, more
- 2:23than Watchmen for the morning. Israel, put your hope in Yahweh,
- 2:28for there is faithful love with Yahweh, and with Him is
- 2:32redemption in abundance, and He will redeem Israel from all its
- 2:37iniquities. We're going to look beginning in
- 2:39verse #1 at some kind of intricacies that it has and
- 2:44maybe some recurring themes that you might have already noticed
- 2:49if you've been following along with Tabernacle talk for a
- 2:51while. So in verse #1 he says, out of
- 2:54the depths. I call to you Yahweh.
- 2:58And here are the depths. This is the, if you will, the
- 3:01chaos waters. It's out of the misery and
- 3:06turbulence and craziness of my life.
- 3:10I am calling out to God. I'm really thankful that God
- 3:14doesn't just listen to us when we feel like, you know, we're
- 3:18doing great and we're on solid ground, but he is truly, really
- 3:24there for us in times when everything has just kind of gone
- 3:30to heck, if you will. And what a joy that here I
- 3:35can't, I can't think of out of the depths.
- 3:38I call to you Yahweh, without thinking of Jonah, you know,
- 3:42there in the belly of the fish, and he's, you know, literally
- 3:47there in the depths. And he cries out to God and God
- 3:50hears him. And hopefully, Lord willing,
- 3:53none of us will ever find ourselves in as hopeless of a
- 3:57situation as that. And if God can hear him, then
- 4:00certainly God can hear us. And one random thing that I
- 4:04wanted to know all the way through up until the very end.
- 4:10So there's kind of four sections of this Psalm.
- 4:14So there's verses 1 and 2, verses 3 and 4, verses 5:00 and
- 4:186:00, and then verses 7:00 and 8:00.
- 4:20Every single pairing all the way through has one mention of
- 4:26Yahweh and then the other mention of Adonai.
- 4:31So as you guys here, maybe if you're reading along as I'm
- 4:35doing Tabernacle talk, you'll notice every time that the Old
- 4:40Testament uses the Tetragrammaton, that's the Lord
- 4:45all in lowercase capital letters.
- 4:49If you're looking at basically any Bible over the last 500
- 4:54years in English, that's how they put it.
- 4:59So I always just, if you will, I'm transliterating or I'm
- 5:03having what the Hebrew name would have been there.
- 5:06It's Yahweh. Lord is it's fine, but it's,
- 5:13it's not the proper name of God, which is what that's given to us
- 5:17in Scripture as that God tells Moses when Moses is like, Hey,
- 5:21what do I tell Israel when they ask me who sent you and God says
- 5:28you tell them I am Yahweh. Yahweh has sent me to you.
- 5:33And so I, I love being able to to speak that name of God.
- 5:39But all the way through here, there's a pairing of both Yahweh
- 5:43and the word Adonai, which is the the Master, the ruler, the
- 5:49Lord. And so you have both Yahweh and
- 5:53Lord. So out of the depths I call to
- 5:55you Yahweh. And then Adonai, Listen to my
- 5:59voice, ruler, master, listen to my voice.
- 6:02Same there in verse #3 Yahweh. If you kept an account of
- 6:05iniquities, Adonai, who could stand?
- 6:09Same there in in verses 5 and 6. But then in verse 7, the kind of
- 6:14last of the four pairings, there's a switch where instead
- 6:19of it saying Yahweh this, that or the other and then add an eye
- 6:23and this and that, it says Israel put your hope in Yahweh
- 6:27for there is faithful love with. And then you'd expect because
- 6:31all the way through the rest of the Psalm, you have add an eye
- 6:34Lord. But that last time it goes back
- 6:38to Yahweh and I'm sure that there's #1 you would have a fun
- 6:44kind of memory device as I've talked before and I've, you
- 6:49know, kind of turned this road trip songs.
- 6:52I can almost imagine that it's intentionally put there so that,
- 6:56you know, you kind of get in the, in the rhythm of things and
- 6:59you know how the song goes. And so you've been singing all
- 7:03of these lines and you know, you're saying Yahweh, you're
- 7:06saying Adonai, Yahweh, Adonai, Yahweh, Adonai.
- 7:09And then all of a sudden on the very last one, unless you're
- 7:11paying attention, you might, you know, slip back into doing
- 7:15Yahweh and Adonai one more time. But it's actually Yahweh both
- 7:18times. I'm sure there's also a
- 7:20spiritual significance that is the that God is not just our
- 7:24ruler, not just our master, our Lord, but he is also the self
- 7:28existent one, the one who wants a personal relationship with us,
- 7:33the one who needs nothing from us, but who is everything for
- 7:38us. And so that's just kind of a
- 7:40random, cool original language thing that if you were just kind
- 7:45of reading this casually, you might not see.
- 7:49Like you would notice one version of Lord is in all small
- 7:53capital letters, and then the other one just looks like a
- 7:56regular word. But wanted to just highlight
- 7:59that for you. So verse #1 out of the depths,
- 8:04chaos waters, when our life is going to heck, I'm so thankful
- 8:07that God hears us. Verse 2, He says, Lord, listen
- 8:10to my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my
- 8:14cry for help. And I think about Jesus that
- 8:17because when he prayed, Father, if it's possible, let this cup
- 8:23pass from me like don't allow this judgment, this cup of
- 8:27judgment to hit me that I have to go through all of this
- 8:31suffering. He says nevertheless, not my
- 8:33will, but your will be done. And if you will, God, while
- 8:37attentive to Jesus, he did not give Jesus in that moment what
- 8:43Jesus was praying for. Other than that, Jesus prayed
- 8:47for the will of the Father to be done.
- 8:48But he didn't. He didn't have the cup of
- 8:51judgment pass from Jesus. And because Jesus's cry for help
- 8:57was met with a no, you need to go through this, our cries can
- 9:02be heard that we have this relationship with God where we
- 9:06cry out to him, ABBA Father, that God who is always there for
- 9:12us, the one who loves us, the one who died for us, the one who
- 9:15rose again for us. And So what a welcome thought
- 9:20that is. And it also means that in times
- 9:23when God tells me no, I can know.
- 9:26It's not that God hates me or that he wants me to pointlessly
- 9:32suffer, but it might be that he has me to go through something,
- 9:36like he had Jesus to go through something.
- 9:39And that ennobles my hard times. That it's not pointless that I
- 9:47have been given a mission by God himself.
- 9:50And so I can feel like I can actually attack whatever this
- 9:55hard time is and I can go through it because I know that
- 9:59God has a point in it. So I, I just love that.
- 10:03I don't know if that's encouraging for any other person
- 10:06or if it makes sense for any other person, but for my soul
- 10:09that's a comfort. Verse #3 Yahweh if you kept an
- 10:13account of iniquities, add an eye who could stand?
- 10:18But with you there is forgiveness, so that you may be
- 10:21revered. I love, I love this.
- 10:25Verse three if you kept an account of iniquities.
- 10:29This is God. If you were keeping watch over,
- 10:33like if you were, this word is somewhat tied in verse #6 to the
- 10:38watchman that waits for morning. It's someone that is looking out
- 10:43to see if there's going to be, you know, any bad guys that come
- 10:48and try to attack the city that because there's a watchman
- 10:52that's keeping everyone safe, He's guarding the city.
- 10:57He's not going to fight everything himself, but he'll,
- 11:00you know, sound the alarm if there is an invading force or
- 11:03something that's coming towards the city.
- 11:06And so here the psalmist says, God, if you were keeping an eye
- 11:10out for all of my sins or all of anyone's sins, he says, who in
- 11:18the world could stand, who can live?
- 11:22This is like to stand in position.
- 11:26Who would be able to stand before God and not experience
- 11:33judgment and condemnation and punishment?
- 11:37If God was vengeful, if He was not forgiving, if He was not
- 11:46eager to sympathize with us and to care for us, we would all be
- 11:52toast. But I love that He says they're
- 11:55with you. There is forgiveness so that you
- 11:58may be revered. Because of God's forgiveness, we
- 12:02are able to worship Him and be in awe of him.
- 12:06He would be right and good to punish every single one of us
- 12:10for our transgressions, but He is not out there looking for the
- 12:15minutest failures that you and I have.
- 12:19Instead, He is looking out for us.
- 12:22He cares for us. He forgives us and everyone that
- 12:26turns to Him in faith and in a humility to go God, I'm messing
- 12:31this whole thing up. I'm not doing what's right.
- 12:35I need your forgiveness because I know what I have earned.
- 12:39Every person that, if you will, owns up to that Jesus forgives.
- 12:44And what a glorious God that is. That is the one that we must
- 12:47Revere because He is entirely worthy of it.
- 12:51Verses 5 and 6. Then I wait for Yahweh.
- 12:54I wait and put my hope in His word.
- 12:57Let me check real quick on what this word is.
- 13:01So it is to await, to hope, to wait for.
- 13:06Let me pull up my fancy dictionary here real quick.
- 13:11I love being able to see, especially because the Hebrew
- 13:17lexicon, like the Hebrew language, it has so many rich
- 13:22intricacies to it. All right here we have kind of a
- 13:28larger definition. It is to look forward with
- 13:31confidence to that which is good and beneficial, often with a
- 13:35focus of anticipation in a future event.
- 13:40This is I am waiting for God. I am confidently expecting God
- 13:48to work for him, to forgive for him, to overcome my
- 13:51difficulties, where right now I'm in the crazy waters, but I
- 13:56know that God will come through for me.
- 13:58He says, I wait for the Lord more than Watchmen for the
- 14:01morning, more attentively than someone is looking out for an
- 14:04invading force. I am looking for God.
- 14:09Are you confidently expecting God to work in your life?
- 14:14Do you believe that as you pray to Him, as you ask for wisdom,
- 14:18as you ask for daily comfort and strength, as you ask for Him to
- 14:22help you overcome sin and wickedness in your life, as
- 14:26you're asking for Him to save those that you share the gospel
- 14:30with, are you confidently expecting that He will work?
- 14:34This is the posture that we should assume.
- 14:36Whom, because we know who our God is and we know what He's
- 14:40capable of. And so certainly let us wait
- 14:43confidently hoping for and anticipating what our God can
- 14:47do. Then here is the cry at the end.
- 14:49Israel, put your hope in Yahweh, for there is faithful love with
- 14:54Yahweh that has said that steadfast, loyal, covenant love
- 14:59with God. He made a promise and He will
- 15:02follow through on that. And so you can trust in Him.
- 15:06And then they say, and with him is redemption in abundance, and
- 15:11he will redeem Israel from all its iniquities.
- 15:16Here you have the you have the expression of atonement that
- 15:23there were wrongs that had been done by Israel that earned them
- 15:32a, if you will, a place of slavery, that they were enslaved
- 15:36to sin and they needed to be bought back by God.
- 15:40Now, we don't really have this exact same economic format, so
- 15:46I'll try and give just a brief thing here as we end today.
- 15:50So redemption and we went over this a little bit in Leviticus
- 15:54as we walked through that in ancient Israel when you ran out
- 16:00of money, you were penniless. Maybe you had a large debt that
- 16:05you could not pay. You would go into scripture
- 16:09would call it slavery totally different slavery than you know
- 16:16was practiced in America. The Chatelle race based slavery
- 16:21that we had here in America. Instead it was I am working for
- 16:26a specific amount of time and then after that specific amount
- 16:30of time the debt has been paid. I can go back.
- 16:33I get all of my like life, my land, my possessions back.
- 16:40My work redeemed me from that bond service from that slavery.
- 16:47And someone in your family could buy you back out from that debt
- 16:55and they would redeem you. This is the word Padah in in
- 17:01Hebrew. And so someone could buy you
- 17:04back. And so here Israel is framed as
- 17:08being in slavery to sin. And so God needed to purchase
- 17:13them back. They were in deep debt and God
- 17:17needed to buy them out of it so that they could be free and that
- 17:21they could be his people. And certainly as we think about
- 17:23Jesus, that's what he did for us.
- 17:25He was the one that redeemed us, that bought us back by his blood
- 17:29so that we would be able to have everything that God designed for
- 17:34us. That relationship with him,
- 17:37eternal life, joy and A and a future and an ability to share
- 17:43that same love and kindness and affection towards everyone else
- 17:49in our life, towards other humans and being able to rule
- 17:53over this world that God intended for us to be a part of.
- 17:58So I love this, this Psalm and I hope that it was an
- 18:01encouragement to you today. I really do encourage you listen
- 18:04to that Psalm 130. I will wait for you by either
- 18:08Keith and Kristen Getty, Shane and Shane, I'm sure several
- 18:11other people have recorded different covers or versions of
- 18:15that, and so I encourage you to do that.
- 18:17See you next time with Psalm 131.
