- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the 1962 Roman Missal. A Feria of the nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost with commemoration of Saint Placid and companions, October 5 in the year of our Lord 2026. Of today's saints, Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes, The holiness of Benedict in his grotto at Subiaco soon drew around him many disciples of which the two greatest were Saint Maris apostle of the Benedictine order in France and Saint Placid. Both were committed to the care of the holy patriarch, the former at 12 years of age and the latter when a child of four years old by their parents who belonged to the most illustrious patrician families of Rome. Under the guidance of such a master they made rapid progress in holiness.
- 1:13Saint Benedict had a special predilection for young Placid. And just as the savior chose certain of his disciples to be witness of his miracles, so he liked to be accompanied by the pious child when God gave him miracles to work. On one occasion, while drawing water from the Lake Of Subiaco, Placid fell in and the waves carried him far from the shore. The man of God, Saint Maris, who walking miraculously on the waters, saved him. Having with Saint Maris followed Saint Benedict to Monte Cassino, he became one of the firmest supporters of the great patriarch of the Western monks.
- 2:08In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. The Introit. I am the refuge of my people, says the Lord. When they cry out to me in time of trouble, I will listen to them and prove myself their Lord forever.
- 2:34Listen, my people, to this testament of mine. Do not turn a deaf ear to the words I speak. Glory be to the father and to the son and to the holy ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. I am the refuge of my people says the Lord When they cry out to me in time of trouble, I will listen to them and prove myself their Lord forever.
- 3:15The Collect, let us pray. Almighty and merciful God, have pity and shut out all things that war against us so that with bodies and souls unencumbered and minds at peace we may accomplish thy will. A commemoration of Saint Placid and his companions. O God, who does permit us to celebrate the heavenly birthday of thy holy martyrs, Placid and his companions. Grant that we may rejoice in their fellowship in everlasting bliss through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 4:10Amen. A lesson from the letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians. Brethren, there must be a renewal in the inner life of your minds. You must be clothed in the new self which is created in God's image, justified and sanctified through the truth. Away with falsehood then.
- 4:40Let everyone speak out the truth to his neighbor. Membership of the body binds us to one another. Do not let resentment lead you into sin. The sunset must not find you still angry. Do not give the devil his opportunity.
- 5:01The man who was a thief must be a thief no longer. Let him work instead and earn by his own labor the blessings he will be able to share with those who are in need. The gradual, let my prayer be directed as incense in thy sight, oh Lord. The lifting up of my hands as an evening sacrifice. Alleluia.
- 5:35Alleluia. Praise the Lord and call upon his name. Tell the story of his doings for all the nations to hear. Alleluia. A continuation of the holy gospel according to Matthew.
- 5:57At that time, Jesus once more spoke to the chief priests and the Pharisees in parables. Here is an image of the kingdom of heaven. There was once a king who held a marriage feast for his son and sent out his servants with a summons to all those whom he had invited to the wedding. But they would not come. Then he sent other servants with a fresh summons bidding them tell those who had been invited By this I have prepared my feast.
- 6:36The oxen have been killed and the fatlings. All is ready now. Come to the wedding. But still they paid no heed and went off on other errands, one to his farm in the country and another to his trading. And the rest laid hands upon his servants and insulted and killed them.
- 7:08The king fell into a rage when he heard of it and sent out his troops to put those murderers to death and burn their city. After this he said to his servants, here is the marriage feast already and those who had been invited have proved unworthy of it. You must go out to the street corners and invite all whom you find there to the wedding. And his servants went out into the streets where they mustered all they could find, rogues and honest men together. And so the wedding had its full tale of guests.
- 7:54But when the king came in to look at the company, he saw a man there who had no wedding garment on. My friend, he said, how didst thou come to be here without a wedding garment? Whereupon he made no reply. And the king said to his servants, bind him hand and foot and cast him out into the darkness where there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Many are called but few are chosen.
- 8:36The offertory, though affliction surrounds my path, thou dost preserve me, O Lord. It is thy power that confronts my enemies' malice, thy right hand that rescues me. The secret? We beg thee, O Lord, that these gifts which we are offering in the sight of thy majesty may help us on the way to salvation. A commemoration of Saint Placid and his companions.
- 9:14We offer to thee, oh Lord, the gifts of our devotion. May they be pleasing to thee, honorable to thy saints, and through thy mercy, salutary to us through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The common preface. Just it is indeed and fitting right in for our salvation that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, Oh, holy Lord, father almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty.
- 10:09The dominions worship it. The power stand in awe. The heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, the heavens and the earth are full of thy glory.
- 10:44Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion. Above all else, it binds us.
- 11:03The charge thou hast given us to keep. How shall my steps be surely guided to keep faith with thy covenant? The post communion. Let us pray. O Lord, may thy healing work gently rid us of our waywardness and make us ever hold fast to thy commandments.
- 11:32A commemoration of Saint Placid and his companions. Grant us, we beseech thee, O Lord, through the intercession of thy holy martyrs, blessed into his companions, that what we take with the mouth, we may receive with a pure heart through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the son and of the holy ghost. Amen.
- 12:18Thanks be to God. Saint Placid and his companions, pray for us.
