- 0:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you are walking actually, because this is a host.
- 0:10SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 0:11SPEAKER_01: Did a hostile takeover of your podcast.
- 0:13SPEAKER_01: I start off as an alpha move, I start off with Eddie and having a modcast, yeah.
- 0:16SPEAKER_01: I just go on and be like, yeah, your podcast, mate.
- 0:18SPEAKER_01: We'll see about that.
- 0:19SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much for having me.
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: It's always a pleasure to talk film.
- 0:22SPEAKER_01: So I appreciate you having me on as someone who's not by any means a film expert but a film fan.
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: Appreciate you.
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: And I I love having comedians on.
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: It's like, oh yeah.
- 0:29SPEAKER_01: Debatable.
- 0:30SPEAKER_01: Debatable value.
- 0:31SPEAKER_01: Let's see it in the comments.
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: You're supposed to be fun.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: Lee's fighting man on the internet.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: Like, or that one you were calling me that.
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: I I get some of those.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: I get some of those.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: It's never from a guy I want to trade lives with.
- 0:40SPEAKER_01: That'll say that.
- 0:41SPEAKER_01: That's good, of course.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: It's never from someone who has smiling in their photos.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: It's also, we were saying it's been a while since we've seen each other.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: Long time.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: In long time.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: Since uh we were at the disgrace 21 Soho.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: Working uh the money laundering company of 21 Soho.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: We used to allegedly.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: Alleged, allegedly.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: Well also, yeah, that's what's great about being a comedian, is that you can always say, oh, I was thinking, you know, yeah, you can say that.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: Having worked there, I can also say that.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: Hey, yeah, you're yeah, mats.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, this is more of a whistleblowing podcast too.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: If you are my we've got two podcasts simultaneously running, we've got the film, and then we've got the whistleblower, which is my podcast.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: Wherever I go on someone, I can't go in a podcast.
- 1:19SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: I always try perception.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: I always try to start a new podcast, Julius Horny House's podcast.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: So this is it's so good to have you on Yanis talking about anyone's song.
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: We appreciate you.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: You know, but yes, no, I can say because but that is true.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's again what UK is good for, is that we have a lot of laws defending jokes.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: So you can who care whether it's saying the actual truth, but then go, well, as a comedian is joking, they can't take me to court.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: So yeah, but uh no, the money laudering company, it's what I called summer, I've been there for a while.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: But so we used to we used to work uh their old things together.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, I used to see all the time.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, I was always on.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: If it if there's uh if there's an unpaid podcast guest needed, uh as clearly right here, I'm high up on that list.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: I'll tell you that.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: Are you saying French skinners podcast layer?
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: No, not that one.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: But I'll tell you who I am.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: On Jimmy Yanis from 2011 servo.
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: Oh yes, boy.
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: I'm the big time, it's a pleasure to be on here anyway.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: Thank you for coming on my podcast as well.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: So tell me more about this inception.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: The conception going on.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: I do think, I will say, and I've said this on puzzle before, I do think generally what happens when I'm on anyone's podcast, and I'm always uh grateful for people who have me on, is they'll always end with, I think that's the longest episode we've ever done.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: And it's never the funniest or the most exciting, fun, informative.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: It's always just that that was long and felt long.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I I do think that.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: I mean, I am I am in the in the midst of starting my own podcast.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: Oh, you're up last.
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: So, you know.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: Well, you would you're doing one at the moment.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: Oh really?
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: Okay, I thought no, no, that was like about this second.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: Oh, right, okay, yeah, yeah.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: You are you are in the middle of doing it, doing what a World Cup one.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: World Cup one, I don't know when this will go out.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: Probably England would opt out by this one.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: But uh, yes, it's been very fun.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: And I tell you what, off boy, we're talking about mean comments and do a football pod.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: I'll tell you that, mate.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: Not happy people coming in on the comments on that.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: I can't imagine they are.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: No, I tell you what, if you wanna, if your goal is to just get as many comments on the social media posts as possible, slag off Cristiano Ronaldo.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: Oh, that must be.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: These people, and I God only hopes, I hope these people are either, you know, let's call them a burden of the state, maybe not fit for work, and that's why they're there.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: Or uh children.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: Because if these are grown adult men in these comics, no, it's insane.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: Ronaldo is not some sort of kid on the scene, he's a 41-year-old billionaire.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: He's been around as long as we can remember.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: And they're coming in being like, how, how yeah, you fat cunt talk about sorry NSC for you.
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: Talk about Ronaldo, like go have a pint, you fat it.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: I even though fat was an insult I was getting at this point, but I mean you're like, well, compared to Ronaldo, I'll take that.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: But I'm not I'm not saying I can do a better job than Ronaldo.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: I was just genuinely saying he's past it, he's not as good as he was.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: They can't stand it, man.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, I think it's now proven he's past it.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: I think we've seen.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: I was like, oh, yeah, but do you not well we can clip this up?
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: See, because honestly, these people are mensally drained.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: I mean, hey, I'm a main United fan.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: I am a big fan of Ronaldo as a player and what he was.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: But he he's completely, he's completely passed now.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: And it's no problem being him being a 41-year-old who's don't hit the balls called as a sub, as someone who comes on for 15 minutes trying to get a goal.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: But the fact that Martin has aimed the entire match starting.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: Oh, we can't go for Ronaldo to remember how good he was 5% 10 years ago.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: He was amazing.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: Get Rooney back in the England team then.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: If that's if that's how you think football should be played, mental, mental people on the internet.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: And look, what's good is that I don't begrudge any of these people's lives.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: That's what's good about the all these people coming.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: I go, you know, hey, if I was in Moran's basement and I was 38 and I ever touched a uh a member of the sex high fancy ever, then I would be here as well.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: So I got three years to live up to Ronaldo.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: But after that, you might have a good chance of being on the board.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: Come in and play for you, like Ronaldo's playing for 41, Euros in two years, you know, why not?
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, back in the team.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, eventually you earn what?
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: Was he earning a year like 100 million?
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: Men's what on our people?
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: No, he's he's Germany a billionaire.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: And he has 25% of Alan Sea.
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: He um he's he's now at the point where could you imagine that his manager of Alan Tir is also his employee?
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: Great.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: So imagine back when so Ange Foscola was coming in and he's like gonna be like, all right, Renew, I can honestly need you to track back.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: And Renette was just like, I don't think so, mate.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: It's not what I'm paying your wages for.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna start, I'm gonna I'm gonna hold the ball myself and just pass it to me.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: Wouldn't you love that?
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: It's like being Ronaldo or being Taylor Swift or being Donald Trump.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: Wouldn't you love it that just you did anything and there was just armies of idiots in the comments just defending anything you did?
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: You do a shit on a baby.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: And people were like, well, actually that's good for baby sussers, you know, anything about baby care.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: Ronaldo scored more goals than you ever wore fat he like.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: It's quite annoying.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: I didn't know how many was really good to you yesterday.
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: Look, there's one comment and I tell you what, when I get this guy, I'm gonna sit on him, man.
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: He wasn't like that.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: You take a shit on him.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: I couldn't take a shit on this kid.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: No, I've got nothing against kids being in the comments, that's fine.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: These are adult men, so weird.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: But something if it's kids, kids, why are kids in the comments?
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: Won't you be honest at that age?
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: Wouldn't you be allowed to be in the commons?
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but I mean, well, but let's law, yeah.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: I mean, I don't think that you're not allowed to have number 13 in this country, is it?
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: So, what the lay of the law, right?
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: You're quite right.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: But at 13, I mean, like, we didn't really have well, how old are you?
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: You're being number 37.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: So you say, oh, okay, so we've got a similar age.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: So I'm yeah, well, I'm I'm actually younger than you.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you're younger than me.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: You've got amazing skincare, Bengal.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: I said, that's super coming through, yes, yeah.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: Jesus, that you're gonna get fewer hate comments about your parents than I will, believe me.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: But it's uh I'll get balled eat on more.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, to be fair, that's that's absolutely true.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: That's all comments like yeah.
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, well, I I bet.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: I mean that's and that's tough because what can you do about it?
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: What could you do?
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: And look, we've got some of the tokens, some of the famous some of the most successful people men in the world are bought, you know?
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: It's easy to get a ball comment.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: Well, it probably is, it's otherwise in tech.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: So you know, you should actually have more ambition.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: Um so the yeah, so uh we grew up at a time when you you couldn't really access celebrities, famous people with nine.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: So you just you just hoped you see one one day.
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: Whereas now, you know, if if well what we're talking about, so 25 years ago, oh yeah, and you could have just slagged off professional footballers and podcasts.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: You would, wouldn't you?
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: I would, yeah.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: Probably.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: I remember like I so I was 19 when I got on Twitter.
- 7:46SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 7:47SPEAKER_02: And I just remember like all the slaves would just reply to you.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: Because they had quite an early adopted, because what was it, 2005, 2006, it was 2007?
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: So wow, well it's a good one.
- 7:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so it was like I think I saw someone I'd I like a Celeb was talking about it, and I was like, oh, this seems interesting.
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: Let me have a look at it.
- 8:03SPEAKER_02: Replied to stuff, and then like people, like anyone would reply to anyone at that point.
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: Because they nobody knew what it was, nobody really had an understanding of like that whole thing's on it.
- 8:12SPEAKER_01: I thought they were getting text, they were like, oh, someone's messaging on my phone.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you I used to have to just chass with anyone, like, yeah.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: Did anyone cut?
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: Uh Quest love.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: Like it was a lot of rappers, I remember.
- 8:25SPEAKER_01: You ever had?
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: It was like Q tip from a tri called Quest.
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: Oh wow, Q tip.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: Just trying the Q tip on Twitter.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: And what sort of stuff would you be like, how are you?
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: No, no, it was just like an old.
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: So they would like talk about their stuff and I'll just reply to it, and then they'll reply back, and then like they'll be asking to they would ask him for help with things.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: They'll be like, oh yeah, you look there.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: It was weird.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: What you doing here, you're most very cute.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: It's in it, and then like but no, but what I mean is like a year into that, people realise, oh you can't just reply to anyone because you get insane people.
- 8:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, of course.
- 8:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: Well, that may be your the story.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: Maybe there's some celebrities story at this dude kept requiring some.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: It's strange.
- 8:58SPEAKER_01: You got quest lover somewhere going, this strange kid was just fascinated with it.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: But that's um that's yeah, that's pretty amazing.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: And also because, as well, there would be um there would have been no social media managers there.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: No, no.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: So these that's truly Q-tip sitting on the toilet, just going, freaking I've got a reply to Yanis, I guess.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: This is it.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, it was quite good fun in the studio.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: Thanks.
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: Matt.
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: Because you can tell celebs who use their own social media and oh, you're the ones who have completely calmed out.
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: Like I had a I had a call with Substack, you know, Sub?
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: I had a call with Substack, and uh lovely person doing the call, I know them, and they're just teaching about how to do Substack and um and how to maybe better use it and stuff, uh, because it's getting more popular.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: And they're like a good example is like Jimmy Carr, what Jimmy Carr is doing on Substack at the moment, like he's making these like essays of like self-help and stuff like that.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: And I was like, Jimmy Carr has never loved this.
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: But Jimmy Carr, the person has never touched on that in his life, right now.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: There is to hit someone's underling's underling, it's writing keys claim, and it's like the idea that hey he that Jimmy Carr is like, like, oh, better get to shooting with this substack.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: He's like, that's what I pay for.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: He always feels like a businessman doing comedy to me.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, although I've never met him, but I used to watch him write up on out of ten castle, it was hilarious.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but he's definitely that person.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, at this point, it's like he's just a mogul.
- 10:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I can play insistent.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, right.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: He's on everything, he's still put his days on absolutely everything.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: Everything, nothing gets by him.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: If there's any new big British comedy show, he'll be on that.
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, and if there's uh a lot of stuff out of him, I mean he's one of the few, in fairness to him, he's one of the few English comments who's made out or British comedy who's made out in America.
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: Like in the Yeah, that's true.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: He's in history, yeah.
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: They're at another roast.
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: When I was out there um in New York, they the comedians I was chatting to, they were uh uh, and legally I'd tell them to give you myself.
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: But I was just like comedy show, but they're gonna watch that up.
- 10:43SPEAKER_01: Did you go and watch them as a fan?
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: And the um the comedians um out there, they'd be like, who's good in the UK?
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: And they're reading now you're on.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: And they were like, the wicked ace, Jimmy Carr, and some of the comics from James A.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: Caster, because that's yeah, mum's comic.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: It seems like really but that was it.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: They really didn't know.
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: You'd only Mickey Flanagan, Russell Howard, Peter K, they don't care.
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: Man, I was gonna say, like, is um, do you know what's actually helped a lot over in, especially in New York apparently, is Talkmaster.
- 11:08SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: So they seem to all know the Talfmaster contestants.
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: Like you're saying Acaster, I think that's a lot how a lot of people know him.
- 11:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean it's amazing how big that show.
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: I mean, what what kind of show I've run for 20 years nowadays, anyway.
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: It's amazing.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: It's a great format, great people, fair play.
- 11:21SPEAKER_01: This is me.
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: I've as we I'd love to be on it.
- 11:23SPEAKER_01: And independently, I've watched one episode in my life, but I don't want to relax watching other comics, do a job on a two.
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: That's that's how I'd feel standable.
- 11:31SPEAKER_01: I completely feel like that.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: I mean, I I enjoyed the episode.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: Like, I'd I'd watch them on bake-off or something like that.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: Oh, really?
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you see, I would not watch them on bake-off.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, really.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: Well, because also, but they're diluted by they're not there in the comments there.
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: Whereas where is just comics, I think, at a comedy show.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: I did enjoy first leading a laugh on laughing though, also.
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: I thought that was that was it.
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: That that didn't, I watched that with my partner, and that didn't make me feel like, oh, I should have been on it.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: I was just like, I'm drawing this.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: Oh really?
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: Because I feel like, yeah, that seems like something that comics would want to get on as well.
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: Oh, I'd love to get on it.
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, true.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: Oh, I'd love to I'd love to get on these things.
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: But to be fair, I just don't.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: I I was, I mean, I was having a chat with uh with uh someone I'm working with at the moment yesterday, and they were saying, I was saying, for someone who's so mainstream, you feel so out of the industry.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: And I really feel like that.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: Like I'm never on any of these, I've not been on any of this stuff.
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: I've never been in the room for any of this stuff.
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: And yeah, I'm just talking about like the day stuff.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: I'm not like some sort of right-wing crusader comic comedian or doing like really mental, strange stuff.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: I just for some reason just never, never enchant these people.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: But to be fair, it's my own fault.
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: I just don't think I I find it hard to hang out with people I don't think are truly like nice people.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I feel like you've got to do a lot of that when you're like trying to get into these rooms and kind of shrews with producers and hang out with comics.
- 12:44SPEAKER_01: Great comedians, get don't get me wrong, but oh yeah, something I don't do great ones do.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: I don't yeah, I don't um I don't I unfortunately I'm from London, so I've got a lot of my friends in here.
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: So I don't I don't find myself exactly that's how I think restaurant is what it is as well.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: There's a lot I I think that's a real thing of the London comics.
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: I think 100% knows.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: If you move to London and you leave your old life behind, yeah, fair enough.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: You know, make a new friendship group, and that'll probably be comedians.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: But um every lot of comedians I include myself in there, I'm quite sociopathic.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: So I'd you know, I just I find it hard to be rounded.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: You actually have to be as well.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: 100% I kind of like deluded self-involved sociopaths.
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: As much as I'm not to say these people are necessarily nasty.
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: No, no, it's just nice hanging out with like the normie fitting civilians who were like, oh, we invited you to that thing just because we thought you might want to come and not be like, well, what well, who are you bringing?
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: And what can I get out of this?
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, 100%, 100% now.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: I'm your friend.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: And and also I I do think I look at some of those comedian friendship groups and I think, if why don't you stop doing comedy?
- 13:36SPEAKER_01: You just stop being friends with this person.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: This isn't this isn't like, well, personality-wise, we're really get on.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: It's like you get on because you both like each other's comedy, yeah, and you're doing comedy together.
- 13:45SPEAKER_01: And if one of you like, oh actually, I'm just gonna like just work as a nurse.
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: They'd be like, um, okay, weird.
- 13:51SPEAKER_01: Should I well, I guess we're talking about you know that guy then?
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: Nothing's talking to you.
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: That's the point, you know.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: How cool can I bitch about?
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: You don't even know the comedian trying to bitch about you.
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: That's another thing.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: I hate I hate I hate gossiping.
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: And I is my partner struggles with this as someone who wants to gossip.
- 14:03SPEAKER_01: And you know, she's not in comedy or whatever.
- 14:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she uh she likes to gossip 100% uh and wants to gossip and we'll cut and I'll be like, okay, great, you know, but I won't be injured.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: I'm furious.
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: My see, mine just does not care whatsoever.
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: She doesn't care at all about comedy, like about the gossip at all.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: She doesn't want him, but yeah, oh yeah, that's good, that's good.
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: Because I have dated before in the industry, and that's tougher because it feels like you just never get away from it.
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: And that's what's quite nice, is like whatever's going on in comedy or comedy industry for me.
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: I can go back to her and she's as I said she doesn't know these people, she's not that bobbers.
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: So we can talk about something out.
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: She wants some gossip from somewhere, so I guess I've got to go start cheating on her then.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: Just creeping out back to it, like you'll never get sort of slept with.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: But yeah, I feel for her.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: I feel I'm just not I'm not really good at that.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: And again, a lot of comedian relations are about that, about like talking about who's doing all the stuff like that.
- 14:57SPEAKER_02: That's the other thing of like working at working at a comedy club, you just see all the gotz in it, like you just hit everything from like you just hit let's imagine in the green rooms, you just like even when you're just like getting on with stuff and just you like you're in the green room, but you're like working on other stuff and you just hear the got comics talking, you're like you do this in function.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you're like what you're like the sort of uh and not to be too dropship, but I will, the uh the the sort of chambermaid of the royal court or something like that.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: You're like going around and they're going, well, well, England will invade Spain, blah blah blah.
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: Oh shit, that's what I'm realize.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: I'm in the industry.
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: Okay, yeah, you're still working at the castle now in fucking hell.
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, there's a lot of that.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: And I get it.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's also for people it's it's for comedy, it's an obsession.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: It's like all people are interested in, yeah.
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: And so I do get it.
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: Like, yeah, you can just keep keep chatting, chatting, chatting.
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: Like, I can do the same with with football.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: And I do, I can talk comedy in terms of the craft of it all day.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: You know, I've I love that sort of stuff in comedians.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: But I kind of got a rule, like I try and just talk about comics that I look up to.
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: Like, because it's gonna be like, I don't know, it I feel like it's more like we I want to talk about the comics we want to be rather than.
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: Have you seen how shit this person is?
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: And it's like, yeah, but you're doing better than them.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: So what is this?
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: This isn't a thing we get out of that.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: I see it like I was talking about Jimmy Carr, and I kind of think, well, look, who are we to Jimmy Carr?
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: Who are we?
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: So, whereas I think when you're like just shitting on someone who's like just trying, and maybe they're not that good or they're a bit annoying or whatever, and a lot of comedian is a neurodivergent as well.
- 16:21SPEAKER_01: So someone's just autistic, and people are like, Oh, he's such a dick, he just never gets to never leave the room.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: It's like, yeah, no, that's why he's here.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: That's why he's not frontline in hospitality.
- 16:32SPEAKER_01: Um and that kind of thing.
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: I kinda yeah, and I think there's there's other people where I think the intentions are bad, like maybe they're not the nicest person, and so that, but when people are just saging off other comedians being shit on, I just think anyone who gets up on on stage and tries out his thing, you know, fair play to him.
- 16:47SPEAKER_01: Like, fair play.
- 16:48SPEAKER_01: And also, I just think generally the cream does rise to the top, and you will get better if you get better at comedy.
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: And there's not many people who make it proper big who who who don't have some comedy chop.
- 16:57SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there's no like amazing person.
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: Like, sorry, there's no one's doing amazingly that it's like not got something.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: Something, you know, I mean some quality on stage.
- 17:05SPEAKER_01: Like I remember uh when I started comedy, I was kind of 22.
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: Um when I started digging in London and sorry, geez, yeah, yeah, earlier.
- 17:13SPEAKER_01: I mean, I did my first gig when I was 20 at uni, and but then you know, I didn't, it was when I was it was 2017 where I was like, I'm gonna try and be a comic.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: Like that's for for a few years I was kind of doing a couple gigs, double doing gigs, do a couple gigs.
- 17:26SPEAKER_01: I I that's what I find mad of the people who just start and then they've done like a hundred gigs in two months and I go, How no, I'll be just gonna write this.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: I don't get it.
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: So they um yeah, I I remember as I remember because it's quite familiar student, and you know, when you're young going into comedy and stuff, you just kind of like mental stuff, they especially if you're like trying to do comedy and you like anti-comedy and comedy about comedy and stuff.
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: And I used to look at people like Russell Howe and and go, Oh, if anyone could do that, Jesus Christ, and it's so boring or whatever.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: And then and then I remember I was I used to work at Angel Comedy, and just where the Bill Murray was opening, he came down and did a set and just absolutely manages the decibel, oh yeah, I seen him do it.
- 18:07SPEAKER_01: I seen well I mean, and you're just like, oh yeah, and then it just sparked for me.
- 18:11SPEAKER_01: It's like everyone who's on TV, I mean, back and then it was TV, has proved it in the craft.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: That's why they oh yeah, sure.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: I thought I found the same thing when I started working at uh those comedy clubs.
- 18:21SPEAKER_02: It's just like for a while, I was like, oh, there's I don't like all this and everything.
- 18:25SPEAKER_02: Watched it in person a lot, oh I get it.
- 18:27SPEAKER_02: Uh-huh.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: I get it, I get the difference though.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: I get how good these people actually are and like what they can actually do and how they can capitulate the audience.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like there's something there.
- 18:37SPEAKER_01: There's something there.
- 18:38SPEAKER_01: There's quite and they've done it, and you know, and again, the game's changed a lot in the last five years, but oh yeah, yeah.
- 18:43SPEAKER_01: Those guys, they had they had to do that on the road, they had to do that everywhere.
- 18:46SPEAKER_01: Like they had to, and you know, you could say, well, now it's like hack, or they've been doing the same stuff, or whatever, but but nonetheless, they've gotten been headliners of really tough clubs.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: Like clubs aren't as tough as they were back then from there's anything right.
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: No, from everything I've heard, yeah.
- 19:00SPEAKER_01: I mean, look, like at junglers, you know, oh yeah, they would be like whipping burgers at you.
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: I mean, there was one lady who used to work at jugglers, and she met and she was telling me the story, she said Sarah Millican was on stage, and a guy from Astagdy just ran up on stage while she's on mid-set, picked her up, grabbed her, and went, hey, Sarah Millican, and then put her down, hey, went back to her seat, didn't get chucked out, then just went back to everyone loved it.
- 19:23SPEAKER_01: They were like, Oh, brilliant.
- 19:26SPEAKER_01: And then she just had to continue with that.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: I mean, you don't get that, no, anyway.
- 19:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 19:30SPEAKER_02: So I think I think like now is now the difference is you get people just shouting things out because they think they because they want to get clips out of it.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: I just don't really agree with this.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: I think it's the opposite.
- 19:41SPEAKER_01: You think people are trying to get you think like scared to be spoken to?
- 19:46SPEAKER_02: People are s people are scared to be spoken to, but I saw a I saw a big change in the time that I was working from like when I started to when I'd finished.
- 19:54SPEAKER_02: I saw a big change in how and like and and also I ch I saw a change in like cold eclipse going out there as well.
- 19:59SPEAKER_02: So I saw a lot more uh crowd work stuff, and because of that I saw a lot more crowds yelling things out.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, interesting.
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: Because I feel like I am in the minority with this one.
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: And um It's interesting because I really would expect it of your like I think people I would expect because you I feel like you do crowd work as well.
- 20:17SPEAKER_01: I do some crowd, I mean not in my show, it's good about it.
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: No, not even like in there, but yeah, I mean I've got some crowd work clips and stuff, and but I I I think I know this is a testament, and again, maybe I'm just it's because you're my audience.
- 20:28SPEAKER_01: This is my testament to my audience, where I feel a real anxiety from them, you know, turning up that the show because of what they've consumed online, because my show is brought my audience from me from online.
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the the stand-up clips they would have engaged with will mostly be um crowd work clips because that's the kind of comedy that's just so prevalent online.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: If you're not into comedy, you'll be into crowd work because it's kind of more of a story, it's chaos, it's improv, it's something it's not actually like, oh, I've got to sit here and understand standard.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: So that they really are so hesitant sit in the front row because they yeah, they think I'm just gonna get up there for an hour and just be like, so what do you do?
- 21:03SPEAKER_01: You in a couple of fucking you, you know, that's it, you're a wanker, you're a non-that's it.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: They just think that's that's the shot, and that's not you at all.
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: No, it's not me at all.
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: I don't want to talk to it.
- 21:11SPEAKER_01: I don't talk to spinning, it's what waste of my time.
- 21:12SPEAKER_01: And I don't like them near me anyway.
- 21:14SPEAKER_01: So, but I'm banned there because I am a stand-up, like I want to do stand-up.
- 21:19SPEAKER_01: And it's funny, I was tracking to someone's uh my mate, her aunt went to see uh Matt Reife in London.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: Oh, right.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: Really interesting the way she reacted to it.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: Because uh she was saying in the first half, he was just telling story, and she was like, What's this?
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: This is I've come to the guy, it's the guy who like completely annihilates me.
- 21:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, what's he doing?
- 21:38SPEAKER_01: And so I think yeah, first I was like, I was like, what is this?
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: It's rubbish.
- 21:41SPEAKER_01: And then apparently before the break, he explains.
- 21:43SPEAKER_01: He's like, right, so that was stand up.
- 21:45SPEAKER_01: Now, in the second half, I'm gonna do crab work, which is what you've all come for.
- 21:49SPEAKER_01: That's the what I need to do really to be like clear oxygen self eating a hundred percent.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: And um, and then she but she said, Brilliant.
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: She was like, Oh, that's amazing.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: Like, then he started like eviscerating people, but she just apparently like the First half, he was doing seven people, and you know, she's sitting there like, huh?
- 22:02SPEAKER_01: What like why is he doing this?
- 22:04SPEAKER_01: And it's kind of almost like one of these I don't know, it's a bit like a Faustian pack, but like some sort of like brother's groom sort of fairy tale of like he's created huge success off of something that he kind of I maybe doesn't want to do it anymore.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but there's another one like that with with character comedians that people be online.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: Oh immediately, and they get boxed into that and they don't they don't want to do it.
- 22:23SPEAKER_01: What is it like they do sketches as a character and then they just think yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 22:27SPEAKER_01: And then they're just like, oh, gotta drop this out now.
- 22:29SPEAKER_01: Uh huh.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: I mean, I always rail against it.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: Like I I didn't really understand what I was gonna reap what I saw.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: But when I started posting online, because I was just like, I'm always scared so I'm like, oh, you want to do sketches, I'm always scared of doing them.
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: COVID, nothing going on, start doing them.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: And the ones that did well, I'd be like, well, maybe let's do more of that stuff.
- 22:47SPEAKER_01: And I didn't realise that was training an audience to be like, oh, I'm the guy that does this.
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: And even from an early, I I never wanted to be the guy with a catchphrase or you know, the guy with one joke.
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: So I would always try and mix out, but I would go, well, you know, this does well, so I'll do a bit more of that in a different way.
- 23:04SPEAKER_01: And I remember when I started doing gigs again after COVID, and people would come to see me, and it was amazing.
- 23:09SPEAKER_01: People for the first time, people like going like, it's you, it's like, wow, I've never had this before.
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: But I did have this real swell of audience who just thought I was this guy who like does like British people be like, you know?
- 23:22SPEAKER_01: And it wasn't even like yeah, and it wasn't even like British people.
- 23:28SPEAKER_01: And you know, even anything, even the term British people is just it's it's like an exported term.
- 23:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:33SPEAKER_01: But look, those when you go to America, they say British, they mean posh English.
- 23:35SPEAKER_01: Is it what they mean?
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: They don't even know, they don't understand the north of England, let alone Scotland, let alone Wales, yeah, let alone Northern Ireland or Ireland that whole.
- 23:43SPEAKER_01: Um, well, that would be, you know, a different so and anyway, so they don't understand any of that.
- 23:48SPEAKER_01: Um, but I was doing that, and so I'd get these like it was a lot of non-native English people who lived in London or the UK that would come to my shows, and I think they thought I was gonna do like an hour of like, you know, have you ever been to dinner with a British person?
- 24:05SPEAKER_01: I don't think always trying to get another design.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: But and and and I think they thought that's what I was gonna do.
- 24:11SPEAKER_01: And and uh at first I was like, you really well these all this is done.
- 24:15SPEAKER_01: Like, obviously, I'm not gonna do these online, and then it took me a while to realize, well, why wouldn't you think that?
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: Like, that's what this is what we did too.
- 24:21SPEAKER_01: Is that what you consumed?
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: Of course.
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: I mean, and so I made a real effort to kind of from then on to kind of move away from just being ever boxed in.
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: Because I I want people to come because they wanna hear what I have to say.
- 24:36SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 24:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, not because they wanna one joke.
- 24:40SPEAKER_01: And I do feel like that's a big change of audience.
- 24:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, audiences come a lot more.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: I don't know how to put this expecting, demanding, um, entitled, maybe.
- 24:49SPEAKER_01: They're like, I've come for that joke I like online, so that's what I want you to do.
- 24:53SPEAKER_01: It's like, balance with me, Jessa.
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: They don't and it's great to have these audiences that might not have come to stand up before, but they they've come because they want you to do the kind of thing online.
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: They don't they're not there to be like, well, I'm I'm at an at the comedian show, I wonder what he's gonna talk about.
- 25:07SPEAKER_01: They're like, Oh, I I hope he makes fun of consultants.
- 25:09SPEAKER_01: Like, that's what they paid a ticket for.
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: And so I think that's kind of can be a bit tricky to navigate sometimes.
- 25:16SPEAKER_01: And I would always want it to be you've come a comedy show.
- 25:20SPEAKER_01: That's yeah, you did you're not entitled to any sort of particular type of joke.
- 25:23SPEAKER_01: I will do what I want, I'll make I'll do the best of my ability to make what I am doing as high quality as I can and make it as funny and as in interesting as I can.
- 25:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:33SPEAKER_01: But I'm not gonna promise you that I'm gonna do a certain character.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: No, but you're saying a lot of people do characters and then they kind of have to I see, I've seen it.
- 25:40SPEAKER_02: I've less though recently, but I just I've definitely seen it.
- 25:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: Um I do think that's changing.
- 25:45SPEAKER_01: I do think um character and sketch, we're moving away from that and we're moving into um touring's camera.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: And I think um people want to know who you are, want authenticity authenticity, and people, I think, are more learning.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: And I think people are scrolling and they see someone talking to them, and they go, Oh, this is a yeah, yeah.
- 26:07SPEAKER_01: I do think people are scrolling in the evening on their own, they've got TV on, and it there is a part of a social relationship.
- 26:12SPEAKER_01: I had a really dystopian chat recently with uh some uh agents, yeah.
- 26:17SPEAKER_01: And they were kind of looking through my social media, because that was what the chat was about about like how can I improve and stuff.
- 26:23SPEAKER_01: And they're very positive, Jerry.
- 26:24SPEAKER_01: They're like, This is really going well, like we see a lot of greater engagement, you or something, something and stuff like that.
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: And um, and they're like, but what's the issue for you?
- 26:31SPEAKER_01: They go, well, what's your what's your what's your problem?
- 26:33SPEAKER_01: Like, why have a meeting?
- 26:34SPEAKER_01: And I go, well, to be honest, I I really I'm just like lacking the drive.
- 26:39SPEAKER_01: Like, I'm like, do I just have to do this forever?
- 26:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, just post forever until I'm dead.
- 26:45SPEAKER_01: And they're like, well, you know, you don't have to just post like sketches if you get a bit bored of that and stuff like that, you know.
- 26:49SPEAKER_01: You post other things like what other things you're interested in, like you're interested in cooking, you do like a cooking video, and maybe that makes that funny, and then audience gets to know a different side of you.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: And it's kind of like but that just feels like everything I get to enjoy is on my own, that's mine, is commercial, is content, as you say.
- 27:07SPEAKER_01: And they just go, well, you know, that that's kind of the game.
- 27:11SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, and it's like one of those things that's like completely gone over them.
- 27:15SPEAKER_01: Like they're not trying, I'm trying to relate to them on a human level.
- 27:18SPEAKER_01: I'm trying to be like, look, I appreciate we're looking at numbers here, and you're then gonna look at ticket sales and all that.
- 27:23SPEAKER_01: But I'm trying to tell you my issues with this job as like an emotional human being.
- 27:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, enough, just not you know, uh the uh Pokemon, super not it had not very effective, just just pinged away from them.
- 27:36SPEAKER_01: And they were just saying, but you know, like other comedians are making these parasocial relationships, and if you don't, if you don't, then you know you're gonna miss out.
- 27:42SPEAKER_01: And it's like, was that now the goal?
- 27:44SPEAKER_01: Is just like trick people into thinking you're their friend.
- 27:48SPEAKER_01: Just live your whole life online, trick people into thinking they come up to and she was telling like success stories, just being like, We have one lady and she like she's an author and she had a subtext really great, and she had a book tour, and people give the book tour hadn't even read the book.
- 28:03SPEAKER_01: They just liked her, and they were coming up to being like, I'm not even gonna read the book, but you gotta sign, I've got a sign, it's over.
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: I'm like, so now, even like as an artist, you're these people aren't even engaging with the art you're producing, they just want you to be their friend.
- 28:16SPEAKER_01: And I I I hate all that sort of stuff, but then also it's like you don't want to be pissing into the wind, so it's kind of like how can you do that stuff for you?
- 28:23SPEAKER_01: And you all want to get to that.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: I there was a great tweet about this years ago, which was like, my my career goal is to be offline, yeah.
- 28:29SPEAKER_01: And it's like as much as we'd all love to be Christopher No or something like that, which is like every couple two, three years, you do a passion project that makes lots of money, and people go, Great, where's the next one?
- 28:41SPEAKER_01: Obviously, that's a very, very finite learning people.
- 28:43SPEAKER_01: 100%, yeah, it's so rare.
- 28:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like, oh, but that is the dream.
- 28:47SPEAKER_01: Wow, Jordan Peel, just you know, you kind of done the hard work as a younger person, and you know, now you're just like, well, I may I may make a film in like four years' time.
- 28:55SPEAKER_01: And then before they all consume stuff.
- 28:57SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, that is the dream.
- 28:59SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 29:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so and I do but then it's wave over those people, but then yeah, it's uh I you even see it with the the most famous, famous celebrities in the world will still be doing uh you know content.
- 29:11SPEAKER_01: Would you rather winners takes on content?
- 29:13SPEAKER_01: And oh yeah, I guess part of that is just they're going, yeah, yeah.
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: I've seen I've seen like all you have to do is like look at uh like Robert De Niro is on off menu.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: So like he'll know what he's doing here, he's just like just like power with content.
- 29:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like a hundred percent.
- 29:30SPEAKER_01: And it's it I mean he I feel I saw it with Will Smith.
- 29:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like he tried to let you come back.
- 29:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: And I guess he just thought, well, look, I'm Will Smith.
- 29:38SPEAKER_01: Like, we're gonna put loads of money into it.
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm gonna obviously go for it, but no one cared.
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: No one can get.
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: And then he did those, and then he put out those songs.
- 29:47SPEAKER_01: Did you see the songs?
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: Well, I I've saw uh a couple of the album that people kind of do.
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: There was one that I thought was kind of okay.
- 29:54SPEAKER_01: Um, but you just can't get away from the music videos kind of watching a man in his 50s, yeah, yeah, rapping.
- 30:02SPEAKER_01: And it's like, oh, you don't need to be doing this.
- 30:04SPEAKER_01: Um, you're Will Smith, you don't need to be doing this.
- 30:07SPEAKER_01: You've had this career, just like just yeah.
- 30:09SPEAKER_01: And it I think it's one of those things where I mean, going back to kind of the Christian Ronald's of the world, Will Smith has had such a sensational career at life.
- 30:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you can't tell him you can't make a comeback as a rapper in your 50s.
- 30:20SPEAKER_01: You can't tell him that you can't be like, nice ahead, watch watch me, you know, show me.
- 30:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'll show so I'll show you.
- 30:27SPEAKER_01: And it was kind of bleak.
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: It was depressing because yeah, it's like you you you had your career you had your rap career, it was huge.
- 30:35SPEAKER_00: You you're a pioneer.
- 30:36SPEAKER_00: Grammy winning, yeah.
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: Grammy learning, yeah.
- 30:39SPEAKER_01: First of all, I don't have friendly.
- 30:40SPEAKER_01: Wow, and um, you know, you could have tweeted him.
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: Congratulations, Brecio.
- 30:46SPEAKER_01: You've been out, thank you.
- 30:48SPEAKER_01: But yeah, it's and it was it's that thing of if you're not constantly making content now and you're constantly on it and people are getting to know the real you, you can't just be Will Smith and be like, well, I'm super famous, everyone knows who I am.
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:01SPEAKER_01: Because people won't show up for you.
- 31:02SPEAKER_01: Whereas there's other influencers and social media people who have a tenth of the orders he has.
- 31:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:07SPEAKER_01: But they're constantly online and talking about everything, talking about every single day, and they go do something and people will snap it up because they're like, Oh, it's my friend.
- 31:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:15SPEAKER_01: But yeah, bleat for me, bleat for me.
- 31:17SPEAKER_01: I feel bad.
- 31:17SPEAKER_01: I feel bad, you know, as much as I like, look, it's great.
- 31:19SPEAKER_01: And I've had those moments where I've gone, you know, I'm just gonna talk about something, something well, yeah, and people like it, and you kind of go, This is good.
- 31:27SPEAKER_01: But then you're also like, it's good for me, but it's not real life.
- 31:30SPEAKER_01: Social media is not real life, it's not don't spend your time on me as your friend.
- 31:34SPEAKER_01: You've got real friends, yeah.
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: That you, I don't know, you ought to be hanging out with and looking after and checking up on.
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: And are you even happy?
- 31:40SPEAKER_01: Like, work on yourself, you know?
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but then also someone said this to me.
- 31:45SPEAKER_01: I'm always coming at it from like a creator point of view.
- 31:47SPEAKER_01: Like, I'm I want to create stuff.
- 31:50SPEAKER_01: Other people do want to be fans, yeah.
- 31:52SPEAKER_01: They want to support people, they like the fact that they have a group of people that they I have people like that who come to my show.
- 31:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you do.
- 31:58SPEAKER_01: I remember see you coming to your shows like that.
- 32:00SPEAKER_01: I guess they're just they do enjoy being a fan.
- 32:03SPEAKER_01: They're not just my fan, they're fans of other people's stuff, other comedians, other fans, singers, whatever, you know, and they do like that.
- 32:10SPEAKER_01: And who fan, who am I to say, fair enough, why not?
- 32:13SPEAKER_01: And we need people like that.
- 32:14SPEAKER_01: So yeah, maybe I'm being a bit too draggishy, but I do I do get a bit cynical of the comedians who are strategically share it out in their life in order to sell tickets, and I go, they get these people don't know the real new you.
- 32:28SPEAKER_01: This isn't a real you, dude.
- 32:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you see the clips and you're like, that's not that's not a hero.
- 32:33SPEAKER_01: If only people knew it.
- 32:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 32:34SPEAKER_01: And I do think that's a bit of like never meet a hero.
- 32:36SPEAKER_01: So that's and then you feel that a bit with comedy.
- 32:39SPEAKER_01: Um but then you know, there's also other people in comedy who'll weigh up in a super nice.
- 32:44SPEAKER_02: Everyone I I will say this, like I would say 99% of the people I worked with that were big names were great people.
- 32:52SPEAKER_02: Uh I will I will say that night I would say 99%, it's like one me one or two people I can think of that were just like a little bit off, and that was even then they weren't like bad people.
- 33:02SPEAKER_01: They were just, you know, they might even have an off day.
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: That's the thing.
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: So well, it's a thing of that I think w those people at the top have kind of been successful.
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: They don't why wh why do they need to be mean and exact lootless?
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: And then you get the people in the comma, you know, there's millionaires who want to be heading way more of that, uh-huh.
- 33:20SPEAKER_01: Who there's a little bit of their thing, fake it till you make it.
- 33:23SPEAKER_01: It's like I walk in and I present a mobile deal and I mean the Annis is working here, or like I'm rude, or whatever, or like I think it it it becomes real, yeah.
- 33:32SPEAKER_01: Me, it becomes real for other people.
- 33:34SPEAKER_01: Um and I thought I I remember one of my jobs for the comedy, I I worked in PR and um I had to do um this thing was not a bad job, but it was like I was at this like marketing event and I would interview people there um just a short five minutes part of the event, about this, and um I was interviewing very big people.
- 33:53SPEAKER_01: I mean, not people anyone else would know, but like, for instance, like this the chief marketing officer of Barclays.
- 33:58SPEAKER_01: So, like these are people who run it at very, very strict calendars.
- 34:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:02SPEAKER_01: And so they're very high up.
- 34:03SPEAKER_01: And I remember, and the the problem with this job was they weren't booked in these interviews.
- 34:08SPEAKER_01: We were like grabbing people, yeah.
- 34:10SPEAKER_01: They're in the green room, and you had to be like, I'm really sorry, but we're doing this for blah blah, because we just you have five minutes of your time.
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: Like Voxbox, basically.
- 34:17SPEAKER_01: And I remember there were people there who were so nice and patient and friendly and chatty, and would ask me questions about how it's going for me.
- 34:31SPEAKER_01: And I thought, this person's calendar is so full, and then like this.
- 34:34SPEAKER_01: And then that then, when I would be with someone who was so rude, you know, dismissive, I would go, Oh, it's a choice.
- 34:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you don't have to be that to be that successful.
- 34:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there's other people who are just as successful as you, if not more, who are really friendly and giving me their time when their calendar is so full.
- 34:50SPEAKER_01: I was like, that is a choice from you, and it might have served you well when you were younger or whatever, but that is a choice.
- 34:57SPEAKER_01: If someone's mean or rude or whatever, as you say, some people have off days, fair enough.
- 35:01SPEAKER_01: But you can tell when someone said, dude, yeah, they're rude, 100% tell.
- 35:05SPEAKER_01: And that is a choice that they're making.
- 35:06SPEAKER_01: So never think that, oh, that person's super busy spinos.
- 35:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 35:09SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 35:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 35:11SPEAKER_01: I see why now I now I've seen why your podcast ended up belong this month.
- 35:16SPEAKER_01: Chat and make.
- 35:17SPEAKER_01: Chat and chat and chat.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: It was great.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: That was so interesting, though.
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: Uh there'll be a lot of editing on this podcast, I'll tell you that.
- 35:24SPEAKER_01: My my friend said to me you could talk underwater, which I'd never heard of.
- 35:27SPEAKER_01: Oh, I know that's me, yeah.
- 35:29SPEAKER_01: That's great.
- 35:30SPEAKER_01: Well, thank you for having me on.
- 35:31SPEAKER_01: This is the kind of insights.
- 35:32SPEAKER_01: No, my lady, oh, and you get the woodsman on.
- 35:34SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 35:38SPEAKER_00: Um, no, because that's remember the the other thing that I love that you do is you brought your dad El Tony.
- 35:43SPEAKER_01: El Tony, the wolf of Mill Hill, yes.
- 35:46SPEAKER_01: The castle lady, yeah, this uh property, yeah.
- 35:48SPEAKER_01: So I'm from Barnet.
- 35:50SPEAKER_01: Oh man, what school did you go to?
- 35:51SPEAKER_01: I went to Dane Grove.
- 35:53SPEAKER_01: Dane Grove.
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: Right, okay.
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: I went to QE Boys, then I do, yeah, yeah.
- 35:57SPEAKER_02: And then I went to uh but then I moved when I was uh ten, so I like went to a signal from a different place.
- 36:02SPEAKER_01: Oh right, okay, that was another thing.
- 36:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I went to I went to uh probably went to St.
- 36:06SPEAKER_01: Paul's in Nouvelle so that you would have done that.
- 36:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but I just go to school in Barney, obviously.
- 36:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 36:10SPEAKER_01: Fine, you go up and bar it.
- 36:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 36:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, wow.
- 36:12SPEAKER_01: And then where did you move to?
- 36:14SPEAKER_01: Uh to like Chesant, Erin?
- 36:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, right, okay, yeah.
- 36:17SPEAKER_01: From there, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 36:18SPEAKER_01: Wow, how funny, yeah.
- 36:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I uh yeah, good time in Barnett, mate.
- 36:22SPEAKER_01: I had a good uh classic London suburbs.
- 36:24SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 36:25SPEAKER_01: It was uh it felt very in between, is he there?
- 36:27SPEAKER_01: Because you were kind of I've always said that 100%.
- 36:30SPEAKER_01: You were kind of in London, sort of.
- 36:32SPEAKER_01: You got the tube and stuff, but also you kind of weren't off, but you're going back to your like nice house or whatever, you know, and leafy part of so it was like I'm kind of cool, but I'm not, you know, and yeah, especially going to somewhere like Queen Elizabeth Boys' grammar school.
- 36:44SPEAKER_01: Jesus trying to we were losers.
- 36:46SPEAKER_00: Good test results, though, tell you that I didn't remember.
- 36:49SPEAKER_00: I still I remember looking at it, it was like, maybe I'll go here when I'm in secondary school, and then I moved away.
- 36:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 36:55SPEAKER_01: Is there the other one I applied to is Mill County, which uh yeah, I was too.
- 36:59SPEAKER_01: But uh yeah, went in there and um well, what we got in test results we did not get in social schools, so I was thinking, but yeah, no, how funny Barnet.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there's a few.
- 37:07SPEAKER_01: I think you well talking about film the Mark Curnaud is from Barnet as well, the probably the most famous film critic in in the country.
- 37:14SPEAKER_01: Um so yeah, maybe even big up the Barnet Massive.
- 37:16SPEAKER_01: Maybe we need to get a good Barnett podcast go.
- 37:18SPEAKER_01: You know, yeah.
- 37:18SPEAKER_01: Oh, this is funny.
- 37:19SPEAKER_02: We were talking about um Jacob Hawley, but we also because I was like near Stevenage uh when I moved, and we also would like it's like him and then Karen Hobbs and uh Oh, is she from around there?
- 37:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Jake, uh Jake Farley, uh they're all from like around there.
- 37:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 37:33SPEAKER_00: It's like we also went to Stevenage, the Stevenage crew, yeah.
- 37:36SPEAKER_01: The the the the kings and queens of Stevenage.
- 37:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I have only been to Stevenage a couple times, and it is a miserable place.
- 37:43SPEAKER_01: I um I had to with season thumbingham train up and down, so we just got off of Stevie and Mullenville back, but there was an hour for the next train.
- 37:49SPEAKER_01: So me and um Hamish, my brilliant for York from and very funny comedian as well.
- 37:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 37:54SPEAKER_01: We uh we had to spend hours at Steve's long hour.
- 37:57SPEAKER_01: Long hour.
- 37:58SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 37:58SPEAKER_01: Uh you know, Primark, Subway, Drakes did the big hitters.
- 38:02SPEAKER_01: There wasn't much going live in the MS there.
- 38:04SPEAKER_01: Oh, for one summer, that was that was something.
- 38:07SPEAKER_01: At least, I mean MS used a bit plusher, but I mean it was uh it was it wasn't the great MS.
- 38:12SPEAKER_01: It closed down home market became the game the huge uh bet 365, uh coral shock.
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: Um but uh yeah, it was uh yeah, not but you know, I remember when I was uh, you know, back in London starting gigging back in 2016, everybody had seen the Brexit vote half and go like go like, oh wow, fucking surprising who's running that.
- 38:37SPEAKER_01: Because I was in my London bubble.
- 38:39SPEAKER_01: And then when I started gigging outside of London, and you get off the shitty train at the shitty station and through the shitty high street, and you go, Well, you know, the money ain't here, bro.
- 38:50SPEAKER_01: So if someone's coming up and going, you know, the money's going to immigrants, you're like, well, it ain't here.
- 38:55SPEAKER_01: That's me, yeah, let's go brilliant, man.
- 38:57SPEAKER_01: So I can see why you would they would think that.
- 39:00SPEAKER_01: I I was uh I was gigging out in Whitehaven.
- 39:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:03SPEAKER_01: Oh boy, that is a White Haven.
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: So you thought that is a lot of hunkies in Whitehaven.
- 39:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:08SPEAKER_01: Um based up on Cumbria.
- 39:09SPEAKER_01: I was gigging there on the weekend and I saw almost an ancient relic.
- 39:13SPEAKER_01: I saw a sort of, it's like I guess how you would feel maybe coming across like a mine temple or something like that.
- 39:19SPEAKER_01: It was a top shop.
- 39:21SPEAKER_01: Closed down for I guess it was ten years.
- 39:25SPEAKER_01: When was top shop when the top shop closed?
- 39:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's probably been about ten years, yeah.
- 39:28SPEAKER_01: So I guess it's just been replaced.
- 39:30SPEAKER_01: I saw the old blue thin top shop.
- 39:33SPEAKER_01: Wow, sign with just an embassy shop.
- 39:35SPEAKER_01: They got clearing the sort of ivy from here.
- 39:38SPEAKER_01: You know, wow, it's just telling the story of like skinny jeans and shirts that had like a little like um uh little the different colour little uh buttons here and cardigans and oh man.
- 39:50SPEAKER_00: It's like when you go to Wood Green we go through Wood Green and you see like the the old JD logo, yeah.
- 39:55SPEAKER_01: And you see that the game with like PS2 on the bottom.
- 39:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the old game, yeah, it's like a form of civilization, yeah, yeah.
- 40:02SPEAKER_01: Jesus Christ.
- 40:03SPEAKER_01: Fascinating to have wall through history.
- 40:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I couldn't believe it.
- 40:06SPEAKER_01: Top sure.
- 40:07SPEAKER_01: I couldn't believe it, man.
- 40:08SPEAKER_01: Wood Green as well, how much that's changed.
- 40:09SPEAKER_01: I remember going to school and people like being Green Gang, and Wood Green was like a rough place.
- 40:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:14SPEAKER_01: People buying their first homes in Wood Green.
- 40:16SPEAKER_01: Wood Green.
- 40:16SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's a nice sound.
- 40:17SPEAKER_01: It's funny, London has that feeling of like nice sounding places becoming intimidating.
- 40:22SPEAKER_01: Like Wood Green.
- 40:23SPEAKER_01: Sounds lovely.
- 40:24SPEAKER_01: It does sound lovely until we go there.
- 40:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, I remember then being when I was growing up being like Wood Bree, Wood Green, don't go there.
- 40:30SPEAKER_01: Fuck yeah, Green Gang.
- 40:32SPEAKER_01: But then in fairness, there's other places that have the same thing without the luffy name.
- 40:35SPEAKER_01: Kilburn.
- 40:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Kilburn.
- 40:37SPEAKER_01: It was called that Kilburn.
- 40:39SPEAKER_01: That was insane.
- 40:40SPEAKER_01: And that was another place to avoid when I was growing up.
- 40:42SPEAKER_01: And then, you know, it's become this sort of gentrified millennial first property place.
- 40:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:48SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of places like that now, yeah.
- 40:49SPEAKER_01: I mean, I live in Hackney.
- 40:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:51SPEAKER_01: I would never have gone to Hackney when I was a kid.
- 40:53SPEAKER_01: If uh I was telling my mum at 15 and I'm going to party in Hackney, Peckham, Brixton.
- 40:57SPEAKER_01: There for a minute.
- 40:58SPEAKER_01: No, no, no.
- 40:59SPEAKER_01: I remember to Brixton recently and being like, wow, this has changed.
- 41:02SPEAKER_01: Can't believe that so I mean it's still got a bit of that, you know, that when you come out of the station, you still go to the end of the day about the station.
- 41:09SPEAKER_01: Station has the and the McDonald's over at Brixton as well still has the ferocity of uh of a of uh of an old school, so maybe Brixton place back.
- 41:18SPEAKER_01: But uh yeah, I mean I just remember the types of people I was hearing moving to Peckham and buying in Peckham and Jesus Christ, yeah.
- 41:25SPEAKER_01: So I'm actually I was saying to someone uh from and she's from Shrewsbury and and she's posh, yeah.
- 41:32SPEAKER_01: And um I I I was trying to say I was on this hand and I was like, I was where'd you live then?
- 41:37SPEAKER_01: And she did a thing where she's like, Oh, yes.
- 41:39SPEAKER_01: I don't really fucking know you, do you?
- 41:41SPEAKER_01: Like, you know what I mean?
- 41:42SPEAKER_01: Like I know, I know it's like a fun game for you, but I first I don't really care.
- 41:46SPEAKER_01: I'm just making conversation.
- 41:48SPEAKER_01: I don't really care about this.
- 41:50SPEAKER_01: Uh it's like it's always trying to sort of be a main character energy after you.
- 41:53SPEAKER_01: And yeah, and secondly, I don't also know you, so this guy, what is this guy's face on me?
- 41:57SPEAKER_01: She started quite posh, so I was just like clap him, yeah, right?
- 42:00SPEAKER_01: And she goes, Oh, how dare you?
- 42:01SPEAKER_01: No, of course not.
- 42:02SPEAKER_01: What are you talking about?
- 42:02SPEAKER_01: And I was like, Ballam?
- 42:04SPEAKER_01: She goes, What?
- 42:05SPEAKER_01: How dare I get so insulting?
- 42:06SPEAKER_01: Yes, come on, like who am I?
- 42:08SPEAKER_01: Like, why am I?
- 42:09SPEAKER_01: And I go, Oh, I don't know.
- 42:11SPEAKER_01: She goes, Pack them.
- 42:13SPEAKER_01: And I was like, ah, wow, wow, wow, that place has changed.
- 42:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, there was a time when if you were a first generation Jamaican immigrant, that would have been a good, a good way to yes, it's not fair enough.
- 42:28SPEAKER_01: But now it's like, oh, the ob she was like, it's so obvious.
- 42:31SPEAKER_01: The obvious one is that I live in Pack Mentif.
- 42:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that was strange.
- 42:35SPEAKER_02: Jesus Christ.
- 42:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 42:37SPEAKER_02: All right, let's um let's move on to the let's talk about the film now.
- 42:40SPEAKER_01: Um so you've come on to talk about so we decided this this morning.
- 42:46SPEAKER_00: I was like, oh yeah, this is the this is the this is the shortest turnaround between like deciding film and like get the guests coming on.
- 42:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 42:54SPEAKER_01: Um you were booked for a while, but it was just the shortest turnaround like deciding on the film.
- 42:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 42:58SPEAKER_01: This is uh this is my fault.
- 43:00SPEAKER_01: This is why I do comedy because admin is not my fault.
- 43:05SPEAKER_01: Um and this was this was the the tough question would pick a bad film that you watched, and I was like, you forgive me and then possible.
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: I uh yeah, I had one in the end, and then we couldn't do that, and then yes, but this is Oh well, it was really funny because you picked the film that was on last week.
- 43:21SPEAKER_02: So that's what's so that's what's so funny.
- 43:23SPEAKER_02: I was like, you just missed great film.
- 43:25SPEAKER_02: I was yeah, it's a great film, great film.
- 43:26SPEAKER_02: Like sorry, you literally just missed it by a week.
- 43:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 43:29SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 43:30SPEAKER_01: Who did that?
- 43:31SPEAKER_01: Isha and Akbar.
- 43:32SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 43:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 43:34SPEAKER_01: Tough.
- 43:34SPEAKER_01: But yeah, look, hey, thank you for being available to talk about it such a nice thing.
- 43:39SPEAKER_01: Have you watched this film before?
- 43:40SPEAKER_02: I've seen it before, a long time a long, long time ago.
- 43:43SPEAKER_02: And then I saw it again this morning.
- 43:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, right.
- 43:46SPEAKER_02: Okay, you're way on it.
- 43:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I had to make sure I rewatched it so I could remember it.
- 43:49SPEAKER_02: Because I was like, I remember parts of it, but yeah.
- 43:52SPEAKER_01: Not the longest film, thankfully.
- 43:53SPEAKER_02: 90 minutes, not.
- 43:54SPEAKER_02: Lovely.
- 43:54SPEAKER_02: And I feel so the film, if I don't know why you wouldn't know it's already if you haven't if you tune in the episode, but the film.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: The film is The Happening, The M Night Chineline.
- 44:03SPEAKER_01: 2008 it came out.
- 44:05SPEAKER_01: You must have had a bit of Mnight on here, no?
- 44:08SPEAKER_01: I had two other films.
- 44:09SPEAKER_01: Two others.
- 44:09SPEAKER_01: Because he is, he's like prime for this.
- 44:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:11SPEAKER_01: I'm surprised this is only the third one.
- 44:13SPEAKER_01: This is like over a hundred episodes I've had.
- 44:15SPEAKER_01: Like, yeah, wow.
- 44:16SPEAKER_01: This this is only the third M.
- 44:17SPEAKER_01: Night on the episode.
- 44:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and he's done a lot of films.
- 44:19SPEAKER_01: And I've had like, I want to say like at least 10 Adam Sanders.
- 44:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but M.
- 44:24SPEAKER_01: Night Sherman is the um is the also in that category bizarre of like Nolan and Jordan Pill.
- 44:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:32SPEAKER_01: Except he's just so funding.
- 44:34SPEAKER_01: He's like, he is also doing exactly what he wants.
- 44:38SPEAKER_01: Every sort of three years he has a new film.
- 44:40SPEAKER_01: It's just that thinks it's any good.
- 44:44unknown: M.
- 44:44SPEAKER_01: Right Sherman is like the anti-Nolan.
- 44:47SPEAKER_01: You know that's exactly who he was.
- 44:49SPEAKER_01: Same career, exactly the same, where just him comes out and people go, oh fuck it hell.
- 44:53SPEAKER_01: Another one's here stuck with his first two films and then never lived up to it again.
- 44:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 44:59SPEAKER_01: It truly is.
- 45:00SPEAKER_01: I've never thought that before.
- 45:02SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 45:03SPEAKER_01: But uh, but I really respect that.
- 45:05SPEAKER_01: I really, I do really respect the artistry.
- 45:07SPEAKER_01: Like, I'm a big fan of like the glorious alien as well.
- 45:10SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 45:11SPEAKER_01: I'd rather that than sort of like a Marvel cooking car three-star film that's kind of like, yeah, passable the time, pass the time or whatever.
- 45:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 45:19SPEAKER_01: I do really respect that.
- 45:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like I didn't even see trap.
- 45:23SPEAKER_01: I'm not still in C Trap.
- 45:25SPEAKER_01: But I read what happened in it.
- 45:26SPEAKER_01: And even I enjoyed the reading of what happened.
- 45:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 45:30SPEAKER_01: So I it's yeah, fair but I do like I I do find now that with his films, I don't watch them quite breaking this to not 100%.
- 45:38SPEAKER_01: Because I want to know what well what's happening, as we have one of this one, but it might have been the last one that I was this the last one that I watched of his like did you not watch um uh split?
- 45:48SPEAKER_01: No, it did watch I actually really like split is quite good.
- 45:50SPEAKER_01: I thought Split was quite quickly.
- 45:52SPEAKER_01: I think probably he's got split and then he's got the one off Blissing Glow, which is glass, which I think critically did quite well.
- 45:59SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 45:59SPEAKER_01: I enjoyed those.
- 46:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, those are the last ones I never saw old.
- 46:02SPEAKER_00: I didn't see knock at the cabin, and I didn't see trap.
- 46:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, those are the ones after.
- 46:07SPEAKER_01: Um is good.
- 46:09SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 46:09SPEAKER_01: Old is good.
- 46:10SPEAKER_01: Again, I l I liked it.
- 46:12SPEAKER_01: I um I old rated.
- 46:15SPEAKER_01: I I I think that critically did okay.
- 46:17SPEAKER_01: I don't think it did great, but I think it would have generally got three stars.
- 46:20SPEAKER_01: Is my yes.
- 46:21SPEAKER_01: I think it's is it above 60, I would have said 61, 60s.
- 46:24SPEAKER_01: You think it's 61, 60s?
- 46:25SPEAKER_01: I think early 60s, I'm gonna say.
- 46:27SPEAKER_01: It's got one of those names that doesn't even come up.
- 46:29SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, course, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 46:31SPEAKER_01: Old I think was it 2018?
- 46:33SPEAKER_01: No, maybe later than that, 20.
- 46:34SPEAKER_01: No, it must be later, 2023 maybe.
- 46:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's re it's uh sorry it is rated 50.
- 46:43SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 46:44SPEAKER_01: I'm a bit off.
- 46:45SPEAKER_01: Not not terrible though, not terrible but partial.
- 46:47SPEAKER_01: Mariam where is the happening?
- 46:50SPEAKER_01: You know Did you see?
- 46:52SPEAKER_01: I can't remember 27?
- 46:53SPEAKER_01: It's 17.
- 46:54SPEAKER_01: 17.
- 46:56SPEAKER_01: All years is when it lakes out of I'm defending OJ here.
- 46:58SPEAKER_01: I've already audience score 24.
- 47:00SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 47:02SPEAKER_01: Okay, hot, great.
- 47:03SPEAKER_02: But but maybe this is something we'll come to, but it's uh the thing that I read about it is it's had a re-evaluation and people enjoy it as a B movie now.
- 47:15SPEAKER_01: Well, thank you.
- 47:16SPEAKER_01: Thank you to the the the people who won't be crowded by popular opinion.
- 47:19SPEAKER_02: The free thinker hated this when it came out and then like have completely revisited it.
- 47:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, really.
- 47:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I heard that it's been a bit a little bit of a I think maybe because of the time we're in now, which wasn't as much in 2008, of the um mass paranoia and jumping on bandwagons and the spreading of misinformation, yeah.
- 47:36SPEAKER_01: I think has maybe given a bit less.
- 47:38SPEAKER_01: That's a really good point.
- 47:39SPEAKER_01: I didn't even think about that part.
- 47:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 47:41SPEAKER_01: Well, but then I think there's elements for which it's clearly that's not the intention she.
- 47:48SPEAKER_01: But this is but this comes back to I don't know, are we getting into it now?
- 47:51SPEAKER_01: Are we starting to get into it?
- 47:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, I don't know how you like to do it.
- 47:55SPEAKER_01: Do you want to do you do you wanna give this enough to this or do you want me to give it?
- 47:58SPEAKER_01: I I as someone who's just watched it this morning, I think you'd be best placed.
- 48:01SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 48:02SPEAKER_01: So there is some kind of thing, weird thing going on with the world where people are just like committing like mass mass suicide, it seems like, and nobody knows what's going on.
- 48:14SPEAKER_01: They discover it's something to do with plants.
- 48:18SPEAKER_01: This is a serious film, not common.
- 48:21SPEAKER_01: And it's and some kind of yeah, it's some kind of natural disaster where the plants are making people commit mass suicide.
- 48:28SPEAKER_01: That is the basic synopsis.
- 48:30SPEAKER_01: Mark Bullberg is a scientist.
- 48:33SPEAKER_01: Should be the tagler of the film.
- 48:35SPEAKER_00: Zoe Deschanel is is his wife.
- 48:38SPEAKER_01: Might be cheating on him.
- 48:39SPEAKER_01: Who knows?
- 48:40SPEAKER_00: We don't know.
- 48:41SPEAKER_01: We don't know what's going on there.
- 48:43SPEAKER_01: He's very odd in this movie.
- 48:44SPEAKER_01: It's strange to see another New Go.
- 48:46SPEAKER_01: It's fascinating.
- 48:47SPEAKER_01: This is a year before Newgirl.
- 48:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, right, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 48:49SPEAKER_01: She looks yeah, she's just from New Girl, just yeah.
- 48:53SPEAKER_01: He's an M.
- 48:55SPEAKER_01: thriller married to Mark Wahlberg.
- 48:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 48:58SPEAKER_00: And it's all being played very seriously.
- 49:00SPEAKER_00: For some inexplicable reason.
- 49:02SPEAKER_00: Mark Wahlberg is like so deadpan in this, and it's it makes no sense.
- 49:06SPEAKER_01: Confuse Mark Wahlberg.
- 49:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, confuse Mark Warburg.
- 49:09SPEAKER_01: He feels like he needs question marks um drawn around his face.
- 49:12SPEAKER_01: And she's the one in question Mark Warburg.
- 49:13SPEAKER_01: What?
- 49:14SPEAKER_01: Hey, question Mark Walbert.
- 49:16SPEAKER_01: It's great.
- 49:16SPEAKER_01: That's great.
- 49:17SPEAKER_01: Oh man.
- 49:18SPEAKER_01: Question Mark Walburg, that is exactly it.
- 49:21SPEAKER_01: What?
- 49:21SPEAKER_01: What?
- 49:22SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 49:24SPEAKER_01: Some many of his lines.
- 49:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 49:26SPEAKER_01: Most in that.
- 49:28SPEAKER_01: I mean, he could have said if he didn't know his line, he'd have said, What I don't know what what to say.
- 49:33SPEAKER_01: And that that would have that would have gone, yeah, we got it.
- 49:35SPEAKER_01: Next thing that's set up.
- 49:37SPEAKER_01: Um, yes, and then do you want to talk about the end, or is it we get to that later?
- 49:41SPEAKER_01: We we can get to that.
- 49:42SPEAKER_01: You can play.
- 49:43SPEAKER_01: So my thing is, M.
- 49:45SPEAKER_01: Night Shyamalan for me is one of my favourite filmmakers.
- 49:49SPEAKER_01: Great.
- 49:49SPEAKER_01: Love that.
- 49:50SPEAKER_01: Not because he's good at it.
- 49:52SPEAKER_01: It's not his son.
- 49:54SPEAKER_01: That's not that's not why I go to a film, right?
- 49:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay.
- 49:57SPEAKER_01: I remember feeling like I had a very different reaction to the first Jurassic World.
- 50:03SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 50:04SPEAKER_01: Which it did obviously very well, the box of piss, and was obviously a very successful reboot financially.
- 50:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 50:10SPEAKER_01: But it was one of those ones where kind of I think people were kind of up front of the Jurassic Park, and then people a lot of people saw it, and they kind of said it was okay, and then and then as the discourse went on to the next month, it became like this is the most stupid film ever.
- 50:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 50:23SPEAKER_01: And the whole thing about her running in heels was it who is it, Laura Dan?
- 50:27SPEAKER_01: Is it or no Laura?
- 50:28SPEAKER_01: Oh no, it's um Christalis Howard.
- 50:30SPEAKER_01: That's it, Christy's Howard, that's it.
- 50:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Laura D's the original.
- 50:32SPEAKER_01: Sorry, yes, and um running away from like a T-Rex or super T-Rex or whatever he in High Heels.
- 50:39SPEAKER_01: And um, but I was like watching that in the cinema with my dad 10 years ago, thinking this is great.
- 50:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I enjoyed that.
- 50:47SPEAKER_01: Very fun, very fun.
- 50:49SPEAKER_01: I want to see, you know, Chris Pratt training Velociraptors, you take on a dinosaur.
- 50:53SPEAKER_01: I mean, this is great.
- 50:54SPEAKER_01: This is exactly what I want to watch at the cinema, right?
- 50:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then like Shyamalan for me is like that.
- 51:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's like, what if I just did my original idea for every film?
- 51:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 51:07SPEAKER_01: And it feels like first draft.
- 51:10SPEAKER_01: First draft, there's no execs involved.
- 51:13SPEAKER_01: There's no I can't, of the last, I don't know, 10, I'm not shameland films, I can't imagine there's any exec involved at all going, oh, should we do that?
- 51:22SPEAKER_01: I don't think audiences will get that.
- 51:24SPEAKER_01: He just kind of goes, you know, I was on a beach the other day, and I thought, you know, I looked to my hands, I was like, oh, it's a bit of a wrinkle.
- 51:32SPEAKER_01: And then I thought, what if beaches make you old?
- 51:35SPEAKER_01: And someone's gone, well, what about that?
- 51:37SPEAKER_01: He's like, that's the film.
- 51:38SPEAKER_01: Wait, you're making a film of that?
- 51:39SPEAKER_01: And he's like, Yeah.
- 51:42SPEAKER_01: And then that's the script.
- 51:43SPEAKER_01: And that, you know, no one ever comes in and goes, Well, we need to look at these markets.
- 51:47SPEAKER_01: Are we our 16 to 24 year olds enjoying that?
- 51:49SPEAKER_01: Who's the cars?
- 51:50SPEAKER_01: He's like, What details?
- 51:51SPEAKER_01: Details.
- 51:52SPEAKER_01: What if I saw Josh Hartner the other day, and I also saw Taylor Swift, and I was like, What if Josh Hartner was just out of Taylor Swift?
- 52:02SPEAKER_01: But he was a serial killer, sorry.
- 52:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, he's a serial killer.
- 52:06SPEAKER_01: Oh, was he there on his own?
- 52:07SPEAKER_01: No, he's got a daughter, and he's like a really nice dad, but he's just a serial killer.
- 52:11SPEAKER_01: And he's like, So is he killing people at the concert?
- 52:13SPEAKER_01: No, no, they already know he's a serial killer.
- 52:15SPEAKER_01: They're just trying to trap.
- 52:16SPEAKER_01: What?
- 52:16SPEAKER_01: Oh, and the the the the pop star's my daughter, by the way.
- 52:19SPEAKER_01: My pop star's gonna be the pop star's gonna be my daughter.
- 52:21SPEAKER_01: And she acted?
- 52:22SPEAKER_01: Nah, she'll pick it up.
- 52:23SPEAKER_01: Is she a famous singer?
- 52:25SPEAKER_01: Nah.
- 52:25SPEAKER_01: So I love it.
- 52:27SPEAKER_01: I love I absolutely love it.
- 52:31SPEAKER_01: As it's a little man, yeah, it's so he is Ellen Chamalan is one of the last like Christopher Nolan, like Jordan Peel, and like probably, and I didn't see this from Francis Ford Coppola by what by what I heard about was it no metropolis?
- 52:47SPEAKER_01: Megalopolis.
- 52:48SPEAKER_01: Megalopolis, I'll dism.
- 52:50SPEAKER_01: Great title.
- 52:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for slick.
- 52:53SPEAKER_01: Six of the he is one of those last great artists in film who doesn't seem to answer to it.
- 53:02SPEAKER_01: What doesn't even need the funding at the film.
- 53:05SPEAKER_01: Well, Versus Paul Coppolis sold his winery to fund that film.
- 53:10SPEAKER_01: Had they lost everything.
- 53:13SPEAKER_01: Did you see one of the New York Times film critics put that as their film of the year?
- 53:19SPEAKER_01: I mean, what an absolute suck-up.
- 53:20SPEAKER_01: That's absolute contradict contrarian.
- 53:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's that's that's like someone at the pub just going, like, you know, I actually think I do a Christmas film and waiting for everyone to go lose their minds.
- 53:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 53:30SPEAKER_01: And it's like, this is such a shy.
- 53:31SPEAKER_01: Like, yeah, probably no easy, you know what I mean?
- 53:33SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 53:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the this megalopolis one or whatever, it's like you're just doing that to get people to comment.
- 53:40SPEAKER_01: That's mental.
- 53:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 53:41SPEAKER_01: That's mental.
- 53:43SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's the idea of mushroom.
- 53:44SPEAKER_01: Oh, really?
- 53:45SPEAKER_01: Well, see enough of it to know that it's not a good film.
- 53:48SPEAKER_01: That's it.
- 53:48SPEAKER_01: Just go to the cloud.
- 53:52SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes.
- 53:54SPEAKER_01: Um, also, Sadh Amadam driver, and I was spinning off.
- 53:58SPEAKER_01: I think he's really um struggling.
- 54:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 54:01SPEAKER_01: I think he needs to he needs to get back on the horse soon.
- 54:04SPEAKER_01: Very generally, I think he was about sort of five years ago, he was seen as the guy.
- 54:10SPEAKER_01: It's like an excellent leading man, Oscar nominated.
- 54:14SPEAKER_01: Oscar winning, no?
- 54:15SPEAKER_01: No, not yet.
- 54:15SPEAKER_01: Doing uh, you know, doing marriage story and doing um what's that one?
- 54:20SPEAKER_01: He's a bus driver, and apparently that's awesome.
- 54:23SPEAKER_01: Um, it's it's really I've not seen it, it's been great, incredible reviews.
- 54:27SPEAKER_01: And it's called like Parkinson or whatever, and he's just it's just a small story about a guy.
- 54:32SPEAKER_01: And um, he's in Star Wars, and he's great in Star Wars, it shows you can kind of camp it up.
- 54:37SPEAKER_01: Um, and it's just been a lot of misses.
- 54:40SPEAKER_01: I mean, I was did you see 65?
- 54:42SPEAKER_01: I didn't see that one.
- 54:43SPEAKER_01: Uh who did?
- 54:44SPEAKER_01: Who did, you know, and then that, and you know, you get a call from Francis Ford Copolo.
- 54:48SPEAKER_01: Of course you didn't do that.
- 54:49SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 54:49SPEAKER_01: You know, I'm gonna be the star in one of his last films, I guess.
- 54:52SPEAKER_01: Anyway, it's kind of gonna be a passion project, a huge emotional character that he is.
- 54:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um, I think he needs to start, he needs to start getting some better roles again.
- 55:00SPEAKER_01: And even like End of Star Wars was like, you know, oh, who cares about that?
- 55:04SPEAKER_01: It was a terrible kind of film.
- 55:05SPEAKER_01: Um, but anyway, so Emily Chamberlain is one of the last artists for me.
- 55:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 55:10SPEAKER_01: And I would always rather go into a film knowing that this is someone's vision, yeah, than just, as we said, the sort of green screen marvel slot that we have.
- 55:19SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 55:20SPEAKER_01: So I respect it.
- 55:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 55:22SPEAKER_01: I respect it.
- 55:24SPEAKER_01: Why not?
- 55:25SPEAKER_01: Hey, plants are killing people.
- 55:28SPEAKER_01: Oh, is it like a day of the truth is there's a mutated plant thing?
- 55:30SPEAKER_01: No, no, the people are killing themselves.
- 55:34SPEAKER_01: What?
- 55:35SPEAKER_01: What, like but at once?
- 55:37SPEAKER_01: No, it's it's kind of weird.
- 55:38SPEAKER_01: They kind of it kind of spreads, uh, but it's spreading outwards.
- 55:41SPEAKER_01: Nah, it's kind of stops.
- 55:42SPEAKER_01: It's contained.
- 55:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's contained.
- 55:44SPEAKER_01: And but how do we have a oh this this is a science teacher who kind of is running from the wind?
- 55:49SPEAKER_01: What?
- 55:50SPEAKER_01: Did we see anything happened?
- 55:51SPEAKER_01: No.
- 55:52SPEAKER_01: So they're happening.
- 55:53SPEAKER_01: For sci- for a film called The Happening, there's very little happening.
- 55:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 55:56SPEAKER_01: But that's what I hope.
- 55:57SPEAKER_01: But also, 90 minutes.
- 55:58SPEAKER_01: Always got time for a 90-minute film.
- 56:00SPEAKER_01: I I love a 90-minute film.
- 56:01SPEAKER_01: I just song I send what I love a 90-minute film.
- 56:03SPEAKER_01: But you know why they don't make them why they don't make them anymore?
- 56:06SPEAKER_01: It's isn't it to do with it's something to do with like the the screenings of it, isn't it?
- 56:13SPEAKER_01: So big films are never sure anymore because they want people to go to cinema.
- 56:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 56:17SPEAKER_01: So they want to take a cells.
- 56:19SPEAKER_01: So if something's two and a half hours, people think, well, I should go to the cinema for yeah.
- 56:24SPEAKER_01: 90 minutes, it's so there's more straight to streaming stuff which is 90 minutes.
- 56:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, this would have been a lovely straight to streaming.
- 56:29SPEAKER_01: Oh, this is burned for that.
- 56:31SPEAKER_01: I think it's very good fun.
- 56:33SPEAKER_01: What did you make of it?
- 56:34SPEAKER_01: So I haven't had a second watch.
- 56:35SPEAKER_01: I'll tell you what I did.
- 56:36SPEAKER_01: I watched this, it would have been 15 years ago, probably.
- 56:38SPEAKER_01: I remember, I think, you know what, and this is aging.
- 56:41SPEAKER_01: I might have even rented it.
- 56:43SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 56:43SPEAKER_01: From Blockbuster.
- 56:45SPEAKER_01: From Blockbuster, like on the day on the on the lot.
- 56:47SPEAKER_01: So I state, they were like, Do you want it?
- 56:49SPEAKER_01: I was like, Yeah, why not?
- 56:50SPEAKER_01: The Blockbuster closing down sale.
- 56:53SPEAKER_01: And I remember um watching it would have been my PlayStation 4, I guess.
- 56:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 56:58SPEAKER_01: PS4 mode, PS3.
- 57:00SPEAKER_01: Or PS3, actually, yeah.
- 57:02SPEAKER_01: PS3 it would have been.
- 57:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 57:03SPEAKER_01: Which could do Blue Rain or fair enough.
- 57:06SPEAKER_01: And yeah, I probably would have rented it probably in like 2010 or something like that, 2009 or something like that, when it came out.
- 57:13SPEAKER_01: And um I remember back that so I've only watched it through once, that was then.
- 57:20SPEAKER_01: I've watched I've read the recap and I've watched a recap of all the major things that happen in it, the potholes and stuff.
- 57:27SPEAKER_01: Um, and so what did you think of it on second viewing this morning, Fresh Off the Press?
- 57:32SPEAKER_00: So I this is better than I remembered it being.
- 57:36SPEAKER_02: Watching it now, thinking of it as a B movie, it's so much more fun.
- 57:41SPEAKER_02: If I viewing it as a B movie and not just like, oh, this is a film where he's really taking himself seriously and all this, it's so much more fun going, oh, he just he's just like doing a throwback to like those old 50s B movies with like a big actor in like these like ridiculous premise films.
- 58:00SPEAKER_02: Uh it's a lot more fun.
- 58:02SPEAKER_02: I I was I was having a lot of fun watching it.
- 58:05SPEAKER_00: I think the miscasting is Mark Wahlberg.
- 58:12SPEAKER_01: Well you don't think that Marky Mark is doing a science teacher, Justin?
- 58:19SPEAKER_01: A high school scientist, he screams science and education.
- 58:23SPEAKER_01: He screams it.
- 58:24SPEAKER_01: That's screaming.
- 58:25SPEAKER_01: Mark Marky Mark, famous Christian, who probably, I mean, I don't know if this is on record, but I wouldn't be surprised as a creationist, you know.
- 58:34SPEAKER_01: I would imagine so.
- 58:35SPEAKER_01: Uh as a high school science teacher, yeah.
- 58:37SPEAKER_01: You know a believer?
- 58:39SPEAKER_01: Married to a new girl, married to new girl who goes and then plays, I guess, like a 28-year-old or whatever, and Marky Mark looks 38 the whole time.
- 58:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 58:47SPEAKER_01: No, you don't think that's the right cost?
- 58:49SPEAKER_01: No, something I don't.
- 58:51SPEAKER_01: That adds to it for me.
- 58:52SPEAKER_01: It does add to it.
- 58:53SPEAKER_01: And I also think we should mention 2008 Marble Bug is different to this is not the yeah.
- 58:59SPEAKER_01: He's he's on top, he's high, he's like uh property, he's obviously I guess this is pitch to him as what's he been in at this point?
- 59:07SPEAKER_02: I'm trying to remember, but he was definitely sort of naughty, he's definitely been in uh Boogie Nights, which is yeah, best film, but then let's get it up Fresh Off the Departed.
- 59:22SPEAKER_01: I mean he's got nominated.
- 59:24SPEAKER_01: I mean, come on, you know what I mean?
- 59:26SPEAKER_01: One of the best films of all time.
- 59:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 59:27SPEAKER_01: He's just coming off that, and he was great in this part.
- 59:30SPEAKER_01: He's not, he's great.
- 59:31SPEAKER_01: He's amongst very good actors, and he's great.
- 59:33SPEAKER_01: Great fighter, the fighter 2009, the fighter is fantastic, the fighter 2010, so don't tell him stories of this.
- 59:39SPEAKER_01: So you but this is a great period of Mark Warburg, it isn't.
- 59:42SPEAKER_01: I mean, him and Gustain Bell, the other guys, great, great, great, yeah.
- 59:46SPEAKER_01: I had this theory, yes, that celebs, you kind of get 10 years at the top.
- 59:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you get a decade of hits of being cool, and then after 10 years, it's hard.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's a lot.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_01: If you look at actors, you know, Marky Mart being an example, especially with musicians, Drake, yeah, Taylor Swift, they have these are the people at the top.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_01: And you're also seeing that even with like football pundits, there was a time when people like Gary Never and Jamie Carragher were they were seen as like, oh wow, they changed punditry, they're amazing.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_01: And it's starting to get a lot more criticism there.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_01: And I think it's really hard to stay on it and stay cool because generations move all, you know, they're they're the scene as cool by people who are older than young people now, so it's not cool anymore.
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_01: And I feel like this was in his 10-year time.
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_01: Uh you know what I mean?
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I actually think it was.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_01: And then, you know, in the last 10 years, if you look at what Mark Warburg's done, I mean what we're talking about.
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_01: It's former It was Rath.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_01: Some Christian films, uh, was he Rolls Up?
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_01: Was his last film.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_01: What's that?
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_01: It's a straight to Amazon Prime movie comedy film.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, about him going to like some kind of Brazilian World Cup.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_01: Yes, he's with the guy from The Bear in this.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_01: Uh Family Plan 2.
- 1:01:03SPEAKER_01: Family Plan 2.
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_01: He was in um Logos.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_01: We bought a zoo.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_01: No, that's uh Matt Damon.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_01: That's my god, my god.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_01: I've even thinking that wasn't that bad.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_01: Um Daddy's Home.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_01: Uh the Transformers movie.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_01: Uncharted.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but he's okay in Unchied.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_01: He's okay, but that's just an okay film through and through.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_01: Everyone's okay.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_01: The film's okay.
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_01: Have you watched it?
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_02: No.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's just it just looked like one of those things.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_02: I was like, I'm gonna.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_01: This is what I'm saying, though.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_01: I'd rather have an Imnot Shaman for an uh Untried.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_01: That is like it's a known IP, yeah, it's got a cast of very adept actors doing their roles very adeptly, but the roles are boring, the script's boring, nothing really often, just full yeah, whatever.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_01: But you could you could easily stick that on a Sunday evening when you want to scroll your phones.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_01: This is that that's exactly what those kind of movies are.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_01: And I mean, that's what I I mean, it's literally what they're designed for.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_01: They're designed for the second screen.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_01: Like, it's easy to know what's happening.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_01: You look up, oh, it's Tom Holland, he's in a fight.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_01: Okay, let's go back to the phone for a bit.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_01: Um, and I'd rather have an Em Nice Shaman one.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_01: Where do you look down at your phone for time he's young?
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_01: What the what the fuck?
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_01: Why are they in a different city now?
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_01: Or even if you watch it the whole way through, you're like, what the fuck?
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_01: Are you s very good point?
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_01: Very good point.
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_01: Um, okay, so interesting that you liked it more.
- 1:02:15SPEAKER_01: I did like it more.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_01: I still don't think it's a good movie, but I still enjoyed it a lot.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_01: Hey.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_01: And what's this is my question, I'm sure you've been asked this on podcast.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_01: What defines a good movie for you?
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_01: No, it doesn't need to have to be the best, but what else?
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_01: What does a movie need to have that book?
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_01: I think that Japanese didn't have.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_01: I think it needs to make sense.
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_01: Come on, son.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_01: Come.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_01: Um, you've never seen a razor head?
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, okay.
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_01: Lynching stuff.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_01: But uh, what's the one, Mill Holland Dry?
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_01: You know what?
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_01: Good point.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_01: Those are great.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_02: Maybe Maybe it's a combination of everything though.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_02: Maybe it's a combination of that needs to be work with good acting as well.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_02: The directing needs to be good.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_02: Like, I think I think this it didn't land because I think I don't know if it's his directing.
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_02: There's something about it because he's a good director.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_02: I I genuinely stand by he's a good director and terrible writer.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_01: You reckon you're right, yeah, a good director, yeah.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_01: In fact, anything is a good director and a bad writer.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_01: I mean he's having fun.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_01: Like, I mean, we talked about split.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_01: I mean, yeah, it's a fun film.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_01: Like it's split is very like it's very claustrophobic at times, yeah, and also kind of campy.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, you're right.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_01: Like, that's what like when it cuts from him like locking these teenage girls up to then him like being in this therapist office.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_01: It's like it's fun, right?
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_01: I think he's great at concept, and then like not so much on the execution.
- 1:03:37SPEAKER_01: And but that's what I respect these people more and more is age of AR.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_01: Because you can, you know, you can again, not a film I watch, but something like Red Notice, which is like an AI-generated film.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, with three actors that that get certain demographics of people in to watch it.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_01: Uh, bankable action film, doesn't really matter what it's about.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_01: I've watched the trailer, I don't know what it's about.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_01: It's just three something to do with Christmas, who knows?
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_01: Um, so let's just do that and then you know, let's let's uh put that out there.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_01: Um, whereas I think this, I'm like, I'm interested.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_01: That's why I've gone and read up on these movies.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_01: That's why I've gone up and read on them because I want to know what happens.
- 1:04:19SPEAKER_01: The premise is good.
- 1:04:20SPEAKER_01: I agree with that.
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_01: I think the bank criticism is it's the script.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_01: I mean, it just makes absolutely no sense.
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_01: The problem with Eminent Shaman films is humans don't talk like they're people.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_01: No, this is this is yeah, this is it.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_01: There's so there's no one in there that you're like, oh, I've said that before.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_01: They're all saying mental stuff to each other.
- 1:04:39SPEAKER_01: Like when the lady's on the phone to her daughter in a group, yeah, and for some reason everyone just stands around and watches uh have this phone call with her daughter, and then Mark's like telling her what to do, and then the woman's like telling the daughter because some random dudes just start like you wouldn't listen to some random dudes, yeah.
- 1:04:57SPEAKER_01: And then they're hearing on the phone about the death.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_01: It's it's just that's a mental, and that's never gonna happen.
- 1:05:02SPEAKER_01: You would take that call away, you wouldn't have just 40 people standing around, oh, I think this lady's daughter's about to die.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_01: I think that's all just watch this happen.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_01: Men's that's all the stuff's crazy, yeah.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_01: Marble Warburg, the amount of times he goes, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know.
- 1:05:19SPEAKER_01: Uh and he's supposed to be.
- 1:05:21SPEAKER_01: I think he's again, this is what the problem with it, he's one or the other.
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_01: He's either a science teacher, so he's like a um, did you watch Ryan Gosling science movie came out this year?
- 1:05:31SPEAKER_01: Close Project Hail Matrix, Hail Mary.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_01: Um, he's either that where he's like actually smarter than everyone.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and he's actually in the room being like, it's because of this, it's because of this.
- 1:05:41SPEAKER_01: Oh shit.
- 1:05:41SPEAKER_01: I'm like, he's like a savant who just happens to accidentally work at high school.
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:05:45SPEAKER_01: Or is a specialist in what's happening.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_01: And when he shamblers like, nah, fuck that.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_01: Okay, fair enough.
- 1:05:51SPEAKER_01: And like, so he's the everyman, he's just a mechanic.
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_01: Marky Mark can do that.
- 1:05:55SPEAKER_01: He's a mechanic, and he's there to be like, what's happening?
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_01: What I'm trying to look after.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_01: My give him give him a child himself, you know, instead of having him be just a married man.
- 1:06:05SPEAKER_01: Nah, I'm not doing that either.
- 1:06:07SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna make him kind of know about science, but not be able to explain it.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but not enough to let anyone knows anything going on.
- 1:06:13SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 1:06:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:14SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_01: And that's the beauty of MLI.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_01: AI isn't doing that.
- 1:06:17SPEAKER_01: Chat GBT isn't doing that.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_01: Because it's like, well, no, actually, to write a good film, you have to either have someone who explains it or someone who's broidly asking questions.
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_01: No, MLI said, I'm gonna have to someone who knows about science but doesn't know anything about this particular branch of science top me.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_01: God, if only this was about a meteor strike, I would have really had a lot of good things to say.
- 1:06:36SPEAKER_01: And I find that very impressive about that's so funny.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_01: But yes, it's mental, it's mental to have that as your main character.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_01: Um, it's like the exact opposite of thing about what you would do in a story.
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_01: Like it's uh yeah, no, but this is what's always saying, this is why this this film stands out to me, as it has character, all right?
- 1:06:54SPEAKER_01: It has an actual person behind it.
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_01: You can't chat GPT that, right?
- 1:06:59SPEAKER_01: You get if you chat GPT this, you get a very three-star film.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_01: But with this, you know, you're getting mental like even the the guy who's his best friend.
- 1:07:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:07:09SPEAKER_01: His best friend who then just leaves.
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_01: Just goes, oh well, the world's fucked.
- 1:07:15SPEAKER_01: What should I do?
- 1:07:16SPEAKER_01: I'm just gonna try and find my wife.
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_01: Oh, right, because he's got no one else.
- 1:07:19SPEAKER_01: No, he's got a daughter.
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:07:21SPEAKER_01: He says something about, oh, um, if you're gonna hold my daughter's hand, make sure you meet him.
- 1:07:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:26SPEAKER_01: Just threatens the lady who's gonna look after his kid.
- 1:07:29SPEAKER_01: It's not what is that what and also if you care about your daughter so much, don't fucking leave her.
- 1:07:34SPEAKER_01: It's just two of these, two your supposed best friends, the wife that you don't seem to get on with, and then go off for driving a car when everyone's killing themselves.
- 1:07:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:07:42SPEAKER_01: I don't know what to worry about the film though, and this is why I picked this one out as well.
- 1:07:46SPEAKER_01: I think there's a lot of films I've watched where I struggle to remember actual scenes.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_01: And what I like about this is is that it is an excuse for a lot of set pieces of grist and death.
- 1:07:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:58SPEAKER_01: I know so many.
- 1:07:59SPEAKER_01: They're really harrowing.
- 1:08:01SPEAKER_01: They were they were worse than I remember.
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:08:03SPEAKER_01: The one where the guy goes out to the garden and sets his lawnmower to uh spin around and then just lies on the grass.
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:08:10SPEAKER_01: And I saw a video sort of criticizing this being like, oh, we have to wait ages for him to get manover.
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_01: I remember that being so horrible.
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_01: That you're just waiting for this to happen.
- 1:08:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's it's an inner stability tension 100%.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_01: And it also feels like no one can save him, like it's time for someone to save him or something like that, but you know, it's no one can save him.
- 1:08:26SPEAKER_01: Um corruption workers falling.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_01: Oh god, and then driving through this uh loads of trees with just people having themselves.
- 1:08:35SPEAKER_01: Oh, that's awful.
- 1:08:36SPEAKER_01: I and I remember that of being like really harrying, and there's a lot of sort of um He's very good at that, I would give him that.
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so maybe scary, horrific thriller films, yeah.
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_01: That you know, you could be like, well, they were more of a white knocker right, but you don't actually remember what happened, yeah.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_01: Like in a specific scene, whereas there's a few that we've just pointed out there that have in 15 years really stuck with oh yeah, for sure.
- 1:08:58SPEAKER_01: And I think I think in fairness, that's a good that's a good art form.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_01: I I think you know, we are in the age.
- 1:09:04SPEAKER_01: We have been in the age for 10, 15 years, since blogging, really, I guess.
- 1:09:08SPEAKER_01: Where people kind of have you okay, this is an amnesia.
- 1:09:13SPEAKER_01: Have you s you watch community?
- 1:09:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:09:14SPEAKER_01: Seen the episode where Arbeit is like the filmmaker and everyone's like taking him out.
- 1:09:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, actually the film's tired, we don't know what's going on.
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_01: Uh it feels like that, where people are more uh interested in a film because it logically uh makes sense and it has everything works together.
- 1:09:32SPEAKER_01: And the I the actual viewing experience, uh the idea of uh making some sort of emotional connection with you uh goes by the base.
- 1:09:41SPEAKER_01: No, but it's exactly because this was started in Act One and then the Act Five, it brought back to that, and it's like, yeah, that can be all great.
- 1:09:46SPEAKER_01: But these devices need to work at a human level, yeah, they need to emotionally resonate.
- 1:09:51SPEAKER_01: And for 15 years I've had this this in my head, this I this man with a lawnmower and these people hanging from these streets.
- 1:09:59SPEAKER_01: And that is something that I think this film has, and a lot of other films, which because you know, maybe they would get more respect from online YouTubers, you know, you're going, oh damn stuff like these online YouTubers going on these websites and making videos where these the people online who are gonna be like, well, you know, oh the script makes no sense, why is he doing that and stuff like that?
- 1:10:20SPEAKER_01: But you're allowed to enjoy a silly film.
- 1:10:22SPEAKER_01: You're allowed to enjoy I enjoyed the second Independence Day.
- 1:10:28SPEAKER_01: Just silly, stupid.
- 1:10:30SPEAKER_01: I got I'm glad I didn't go to watch it, and I'm glad I didn't pay to watch it.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_01: But I watched it and I go, you know what, it's popcorn fun.
- 1:10:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:10:36SPEAKER_01: And it's the same with this, where uh my view on this is yeah, half the film is genuinely good.
- 1:10:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:10:46SPEAKER_01: I think the first half is generally good.
- 1:10:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:10:48SPEAKER_01: I think okay, it's silly, but it's captivating.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_01: There's a mystery, I don't really know what's going on.
- 1:10:54SPEAKER_01: You don't really know what's gonna happen next.
- 1:10:56SPEAKER_01: You don't really know who to root for.
- 1:10:58SPEAKER_01: And I like that mystery element of it.
- 1:11:00SPEAKER_01: I like that.
- 1:11:01SPEAKER_01: Cause because it films are supposed to be engaging.
- 1:11:04SPEAKER_01: So, I mean, I guess especially in this second screen era where we we have films now where they've gotta pack so much at the start to get people engaged.
- 1:11:13SPEAKER_01: And I like this that it was kind of you reading what you're watching, and then second half it becomes a bad film.
- 1:11:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:11:20SPEAKER_01: The writing's still fun.
- 1:11:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:11:22SPEAKER_02: I would agree.
- 1:11:23SPEAKER_02: I would actually agree with that.
- 1:11:24SPEAKER_02: I thought yeah, the first half is is much more engaging and better made, and then it kind of falls apart a little bit, but like when they're running in a field away from the wind, I mean mental.
- 1:11:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:11:37SPEAKER_01: It's insane.
- 1:11:37SPEAKER_01: That's what was like, but you know what?
- 1:11:39SPEAKER_01: Okay, it's fun and it's campy.
- 1:11:40SPEAKER_01: And the old lady as well.
- 1:11:41SPEAKER_01: The old lady.
- 1:11:43SPEAKER_00: Get out just saying her head against the window.
- 1:11:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:11:47SPEAKER_01: And also that was like uh I and I guess then the wind comes in and the kind of go decide to kill themselves and stuff like that.
- 1:11:54SPEAKER_01: I think that's all mental.
- 1:11:56SPEAKER_01: But what I love about an inner shaman film is that even when it's ending, you're like, we still go one more twisting.
- 1:12:02SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 1:12:02SPEAKER_01: There's always a twist.
- 1:12:03SPEAKER_01: There's no need.
- 1:12:04SPEAKER_01: You could end it with them, and then the news report saying, you know, apparently it was it's stopped now, and then someone goes, Maybe this was just what they say at the end, they say it's like the sky was no because it's the rash before the inners.
- 1:12:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:12:17SPEAKER_01: And they could end like that and be like, well, fucking who knows, but no, let's go on, let's go to France.
- 1:12:21SPEAKER_01: It's having it in France now.
- 1:12:23SPEAKER_01: It very much reminded me of do you remember the end of 28 years later?
- 1:12:27SPEAKER_01: Uh no, I haven't seen that.
- 1:12:28SPEAKER_01: No, 28 years later, sorry, 28 months later.
- 1:12:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yes.
- 1:12:32SPEAKER_01: So, you know, they have this big zombie blockbuster.
- 1:12:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then it's kind of contained, and then it just costs you know, like a pound footage of Paris being overrun.
- 1:12:43SPEAKER_01: Well, this is it, because Americans don't know any European places, so they just American filmmakers go, but this is spread to Europe, and they go, London, oh, we did that for the last one, Paris, brilliant.
- 1:12:54SPEAKER_01: They're never doing it in like Düsseldorf or something, or Utrecht, or whatever, you know.
- 1:12:59SPEAKER_01: There's not a processor of outbreak.
- 1:13:02SPEAKER_01: Americans be like, where was that?
- 1:13:03SPEAKER_01: Was that Kansas?
- 1:13:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:06SPEAKER_01: There's no one there anyway.
- 1:13:07SPEAKER_01: I don't want to go to where is it?
- 1:13:08SPEAKER_01: Slow back, yeah.
- 1:13:10SPEAKER_01: So it has to be the two places that American people want to go, yeah.
- 1:13:14SPEAKER_01: Europe and that.
- 1:13:15SPEAKER_01: And so sometimes you get Venice.
- 1:13:16SPEAKER_01: Sometimes you get Venice, right?
- 1:13:18SPEAKER_01: You know Venice, where the man here.
- 1:13:20SPEAKER_01: Uh the was it far from home?
- 1:13:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, in Venice from one of the set pieces because they know it.
- 1:13:26SPEAKER_01: But um, no, there's so many Americans, sorry, European cities that could have been, but of course, it's gotta be Paris, yeah.
- 1:13:31SPEAKER_01: It's gotta be Paris, and people like, oh no, I wanted to go to Paris.
- 1:13:35SPEAKER_01: No, everyone's killing themselves.
- 1:13:36SPEAKER_01: Aww.
- 1:13:37SPEAKER_01: No.
- 1:13:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's so good.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_00: So funny.
- 1:13:41SPEAKER_01: But yeah, that second half, it stops.
- 1:13:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:13:43SPEAKER_01: But I do generally think that first half is good.
- 1:13:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I would agree with that.
- 1:13:47SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, but rewatching it, I was like, I'm enjoying this, and then suddenly I'm just like, okay, I see why it stopped.
- 1:13:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I like it.
- 1:13:53SPEAKER_01: And look, it does fall apart.
- 1:13:54SPEAKER_01: I mean, you're you're very pre the premise falls apart.
- 1:13:56SPEAKER_01: The premise falls apart.
- 1:13:58SPEAKER_01: The casting with Martin Wahlberg is is not right from the start.
- 1:14:01SPEAKER_01: Um, but there's that bit in the classroom where he the kids are leaving, he goes, Hey guys, and they turn around and he goes, You know, that's such a weird thing for a teacher to do.
- 1:14:16SPEAKER_01: Imagine if your teacher did that to you, you'd be like, What the hell is up with that guy?
- 1:14:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:14:20SPEAKER_01: You you and usually you wouldn't just walk out, you've not got the social social skills don't sound like are you okay, sir?
- 1:14:24SPEAKER_01: Like what?
- 1:14:24SPEAKER_01: What was that?
- 1:14:25SPEAKER_01: You know, what and and also is he withholding information about like that there's something catastrophic happening?
- 1:14:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and also the the when they get told about the deaths that in in Central Park, and then everyone's kind of like, whoa, and then everyone's like, Oh, I guess we just consume you're not like they are not far.
- 1:14:40SPEAKER_01: No, they go, Well, that's that's not Philadelphia, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:14:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, mad.
- 1:14:46SPEAKER_01: Mad, my mad.
- 1:14:46SPEAKER_01: But yeah, I mean, his him is a uh school.
- 1:14:48SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's not played a school teacher since then, has he?
- 1:14:50SPEAKER_01: I don't think, or anyone near in the that.
- 1:14:53SPEAKER_01: So I don't think he uh I don't think it worked for him.
- 1:14:55SPEAKER_01: No, um, and then the friend is John Laguzamo.
- 1:15:00SPEAKER_01: And who was he been in?
- 1:15:01SPEAKER_01: Because I really recognized him.
- 1:15:02SPEAKER_01: He's in so many things.
- 1:15:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's in amazing side characters.
- 1:15:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's always like side characters.
- 1:15:07SPEAKER_01: He's in like the John Wick films, the yeah, and then he was Luigi in the Super Mario Brothers movie.
- 1:15:14SPEAKER_01: Like the original.
- 1:15:15SPEAKER_01: Oh, the original one, Jesus Christ, yeah.
- 1:15:18SPEAKER_01: I think that wasn't in Butter River.
- 1:15:20SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, so I mean he's their their relationship is a bit odd.
- 1:15:24SPEAKER_01: Uh very odd.
- 1:15:25SPEAKER_01: It's this, but because there's a point, because he at first you'd kind of go, they're colleagues, so they're kind of friends, not really.
- 1:15:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and you kind of go, I get this all makes sense.
- 1:15:34SPEAKER_01: But there's just a line where he goes, I'm your best friend.
- 1:15:37SPEAKER_01: And and you go, What?
- 1:15:39SPEAKER_01: They don't like their best friends at all.
- 1:15:41SPEAKER_01: No.
- 1:15:42SPEAKER_01: And I guess the whole point of that, they have to say that, so then when he leaves his daughter with them, yeah, you kind of go, Well, maybe you could understand if you're getting somewhat dangerous and you look with your best friend.
- 1:15:51SPEAKER_01: But um, but yeah, the uh that's that's all very weird.
- 1:15:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, very, very weird.
- 1:15:57SPEAKER_00: That's all very weird.
- 1:15:59SPEAKER_00: But it's again it's a fun movie, so who cares?
- 1:16:01SPEAKER_01: Fun movie, and that's the thing, I'm here for fun movies.
- 1:16:04SPEAKER_01: Look, and I'm not saying it's a great film, but I think it's a good film, and look, I think so.
- 1:16:08SPEAKER_01: I watched a video talking about this where they're like, there's been a revision with this where it's been a bit like, well, it's actually a real kind of it's kind of a bit of a satire about modern-day paranoia, yeah, and uh the way the misinformation spreads, but that would all be good, and I would really love to believe that if there weren't like news reports talking about like specifically what is happening, and then that kind of ruins that for me.
- 1:16:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because there's a moment when what are the where do they go?
- 1:16:35SPEAKER_01: Nebraska, and there's like people in the garage and they're like they they they're putting guns on, there's like these mobile, yeah, yes, and there's uh there's a news report being like the government might be involved.
- 1:16:45SPEAKER_01: That's great, yeah.
- 1:16:46SPEAKER_01: And I think that's the difference.
- 1:16:47SPEAKER_01: Is the thing when people think it's terrorism?
- 1:16:49SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 1:16:50SPEAKER_01: What's the film?
- 1:16:51SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh, I'm I'm forgetting it now.
- 1:16:54SPEAKER_01: Um, but it came out recently, it was straight to Netflix, and it was about this family going into this home, oh this plush home for like a getaway.
- 1:17:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then um weird stuff starts happening, and they've got neighbours who come over um and are talking to them about what's happening in the world, and there's a little kid, and there's like a high-pitched screeching noise at one point.
- 1:17:17SPEAKER_01: God, I'm gonna remember this film.
- 1:17:20SPEAKER_01: I watched it with my dad.
- 1:17:21SPEAKER_01: This is good.
- 1:17:22SPEAKER_01: Well, and then I can't even remember any of the actors in it.
- 1:17:24SPEAKER_01: They're all they're all they're all you'd recognise all the actors, but there was no, I don't think there was a big star in it.
- 1:17:31SPEAKER_01: I might be wrong.
- 1:17:32SPEAKER_01: I don't even know what's in there.
- 1:17:33SPEAKER_01: I don't know this one.
- 1:17:34SPEAKER_01: Um, okay, Thriller, Netflix, um Leave the World Behind.
- 1:17:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:17:43SPEAKER_01: Leave the World Behind.
- 1:17:44SPEAKER_01: I heard of this, I know nothing about it.
- 1:17:48SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 1:17:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Leave the World Behind.
- 1:17:52SPEAKER_01: It had in it um Julia Roberts, oh, and Ethan Hawke and Mahasha Ali, so that I'll get on him, yeah.
- 1:17:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:18:01SPEAKER_01: Kevin Bacon in later, yeah.
- 1:18:03SPEAKER_01: Um, but also all people that maybe aren't at this moment in time like the biggest stars in the world.
- 1:18:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:18:10SPEAKER_01: Um, but uh yeah, they are uh yeah, it was a very good film.
- 1:18:17SPEAKER_01: It's a odd, it takes a bit of patience.
- 1:18:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:18:20SPEAKER_01: Um, but that's that does what the happening kind of fails to do in that eight room.
- 1:18:25SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:18:26SPEAKER_01: It's a bit more of a satire of like what would happen if there was something going on in your country, and especially America, and it wasn't clear who was doing it and what's it is it a terrorist attack or not, or is there nothing?
- 1:18:38SPEAKER_01: And people get very scared, people also then get violent, and there's all this sort of stuff.
- 1:18:42SPEAKER_01: And I reckon that succeeds where the happening doesn't.
- 1:18:46SPEAKER_01: Because the happening does kind of explain what's going on, yeah.
- 1:18:49SPEAKER_01: Kind of early.
- 1:18:51SPEAKER_01: Also, I'm always a fan of a mental character, the plant eye, the plant sign, the botanist, or whatever.
- 1:18:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, mental who seems to be loving that this is happening.
- 1:19:00SPEAKER_01: He seems to kind of relish.
- 1:19:02SPEAKER_01: It's like the bushes, they're talking to the trees.
- 1:19:04SPEAKER_01: I've been telling my wife this for years.
- 1:19:07SPEAKER_01: How are you all just getting on this now?
- 1:19:09SPEAKER_01: Of course, it's the fucking flowers' fault.
- 1:19:12SPEAKER_01: I've said this for ages, and he's still warming them.
- 1:19:15SPEAKER_01: He's like, I love the plants.
- 1:19:16SPEAKER_01: You're gonna make me kill myself, aren't you?
- 1:19:18SPEAKER_01: Aren't you checking little plant?
- 1:19:20SPEAKER_01: You know, he loves it.
- 1:19:21SPEAKER_01: I'm all I'm all fan for that one.
- 1:19:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but yeah, they explained pretty early on.
- 1:19:24SPEAKER_01: So I I think this revisionism that it's like actually quite a good satire and kind of paranoia and the American news system where they try and like incite people to be crazy about what's going on.
- 1:19:35SPEAKER_01: I don't, I don't really buy uh what did you say?
- 1:19:37SPEAKER_01: B movie.
- 1:19:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, if you think of it as a B movie, it's fun.
- 1:19:41SPEAKER_01: What 90 minutes?
- 1:19:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:19:42SPEAKER_01: It doesn't overlook say it's welcome.
- 1:19:45SPEAKER_01: It has a few mental set pieces in it.
- 1:19:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:19:47SPEAKER_00: Um Happily voices again.
- 1:19:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:19:50SPEAKER_01: And also I like just like shills that have a bit of mystery and intrigue and are actually have a mental explanation, yeah.
- 1:20:00SPEAKER_01: I would rather that.
- 1:20:00SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 1:20:01SPEAKER_01: Then films that's where the world, leave the world behind, is a bit different because it tries to be really grounded in reality.
- 1:20:08SPEAKER_01: And that's what makes it good.
- 1:20:09SPEAKER_01: But also I think what makes it a bit, I don't know, maybe a bit unfulfilling at the end, because you kind of wanted this bigger explanation, actually, it's really quite small.
- 1:20:18SPEAKER_01: Um, but the uh this one, I like that it's like, what's happening?
- 1:20:25SPEAKER_01: What's going on?
- 1:20:26SPEAKER_01: Is it terrorist?
- 1:20:27SPEAKER_01: And then you're like, what is happening?
- 1:20:29SPEAKER_01: It's like, oh, plants are making people kill themselves in incredibly cinematic ways.
- 1:20:36SPEAKER_01: And they're not doing this across the world, or it's not, we don't even know what type of plant it is.
- 1:20:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we're just like they just decided to do this in the northeast of America.
- 1:20:45SPEAKER_01: And I like that it's like that's mental.
- 1:20:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and you, you know, you've watched the film and you go, that's okay, that's a mental playoff.
- 1:20:53SPEAKER_01: I was not expecting that.
- 1:20:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:20:54SPEAKER_01: So I I did like that element of it.
- 1:20:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:20:56SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 1:20:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:20:58SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's a great explanation for why you enjoyed it.
- 1:21:01SPEAKER_01: Enjoyed it.
- 1:21:01SPEAKER_01: I'm not for one minute saying the happening is a masterpiece.
- 1:21:04SPEAKER_01: But it's a good film, it's fun.
- 1:21:06SPEAKER_01: It becomes a bad film it in the second half, but I felt it was so enjoyable.
- 1:21:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I would agree.
- 1:21:11SPEAKER_00: I completely agree with that.
- 1:21:13SPEAKER_02: Um, okay, so let's let's move on to the final couple of bits, but um, I know you got the also need to leave soon.
- 1:21:21SPEAKER_02: Um so we're gonna do a game that I've been doing with like the last few guests, which is called Movie 501.
- 1:21:27SPEAKER_02: And it's a game where the guests are playing 501 is the score, and you're getting down to zero like a darts board.
- 1:21:36SPEAKER_02: Like you're getting down to zero.
- 1:21:37SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, okay.
- 1:21:38SPEAKER_02: Uh but you do it with movie scores.
- 1:21:39SPEAKER_02: So you've like gotta name the movie, get the squill.
- 1:21:41SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:21:42SPEAKER_02: And to zero.
- 1:21:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:21:44SPEAKER_02: And I'm just giving each each guest that comes on, I'm giving them a category because based on whatever the film they fix, so I'm gonna give you horror movies.
- 1:21:51SPEAKER_01: Oh okay, so gotta go down.
- 1:21:54SPEAKER_01: You gotta get down to zero in the shortest amount of time.
- 1:21:57SPEAKER_01: Does Alien count as a horror film?
- 1:21:58SPEAKER_01: Of course it does.
- 1:21:59SPEAKER_01: It's got Alien.
- 1:22:00SPEAKER_01: Alien's one of the best horror films of all time.
- 1:22:02SPEAKER_01: One of the best films of all time, I think.
- 1:22:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely unbelievable.
- 1:22:05SPEAKER_01: It's one of the there's an interesting category of films that were so good.
- 1:22:09SPEAKER_01: Ave launched a huge franchise, despite you could argue there's only ever been one great film.
- 1:22:13SPEAKER_01: I mean, there's Aliens is really good film and Aliens.
- 1:22:15SPEAKER_01: There's a couple later that I kind of get more but but Jurassic Park's another one.
- 1:22:19SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 1:22:21SPEAKER_01: What seven films have we on now?
- 1:22:23SPEAKER_01: Has there only been one good film?
- 1:22:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, only the first one is good.
- 1:22:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Jaws, five films was it?
- 1:22:26SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, yeah, and they just have to start with it.
- 1:22:28SPEAKER_02: Uh, because it missed Um Alien is Lucky 3.
- 1:22:32SPEAKER_02: So I'll keep track of the scores.
- 1:22:34SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:22:35SPEAKER_01: Okay, so I think that's a pretty decent slot.
- 1:22:37SPEAKER_02: That's a great start.
- 1:22:38SPEAKER_01: But now So I'm trying to think, okay, the Exorcist.
- 1:22:44SPEAKER_01: Let's go Exorcist.
- 1:22:45SPEAKER_01: Another another one where they had loads of them.
- 1:22:48SPEAKER_01: Yes, exactly.
- 1:22:49SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 1:22:50SPEAKER_01: 78.
- 1:22:51SPEAKER_01: That's loaded.
- 1:22:52SPEAKER_01: Whoa! Wow.
- 1:22:54SPEAKER_01: Arguably the greatest horror film of all time, some people would argue.
- 1:22:58SPEAKER_01: Um I really thought that would be in the 90s as well.
- 1:23:01SPEAKER_02: So you're all you're at 171, so you've got 330 to go.
- 1:23:11SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:23:15SPEAKER_01: I got a couple in my head, but I'm kind of thinking, you know what?
- 1:23:19SPEAKER_01: For recency buyers, yeah, um I think people have not Russian being on the but I'm gonna go with uh Obsession.
- 1:23:27SPEAKER_01: Great movie.
- 1:23:28SPEAKER_01: Great movie.
- 1:23:28SPEAKER_01: Loved it.
- 1:23:29SPEAKER_01: Very little very floristic, yeah, yeah.
- 1:23:31SPEAKER_01: 94.
- 1:23:32SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 1:23:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:23:33SPEAKER_01: So that's imagine that.
- 1:23:34SPEAKER_01: That's got what 16 more than The Exorcist.
- 1:23:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:23:37SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 1:23:38SPEAKER_02: So you're at You got 236 to go.
- 1:23:43SPEAKER_01: I mean, I'm almost tempted to go recent again.
- 1:23:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, dude.
- 1:23:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:23:48SPEAKER_01: Uh let's go weapons.
- 1:23:50SPEAKER_02: Oh, another one, another amazing one.
- 1:23:52SPEAKER_02: Love Weapons.
- 1:23:53SPEAKER_02: Laugh Weapons.
- 1:23:54SPEAKER_02: And 93.
- 1:23:55SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:23:56SPEAKER_02: Smash it this so far.
- 1:23:57SPEAKER_02: 358.
- 1:23:59SPEAKER_01: Uh 163.
- 1:24:02SPEAKER_01: 143.
- 1:24:02SPEAKER_01: 143.
- 1:24:04SPEAKER_01: This is the now we need to kind of well we can get in two.
- 1:24:07SPEAKER_01: We can get in good.
- 1:24:09SPEAKER_01: It's been done, the shortest it's been done in is nine.
- 1:24:13SPEAKER_01: What's this?
- 1:24:14SPEAKER_01: Or we are you've you've done four so far.
- 1:24:16SPEAKER_01: Do I have to get it bang on though?
- 1:24:18SPEAKER_01: To end it, yes.
- 1:24:18SPEAKER_01: Yes, I mean that's break is hard.
- 1:24:20SPEAKER_01: That's I mean, yeah, but then we can just go on an older homework.
- 1:24:23SPEAKER_01: I'm almost thinking I maybe need to give myself a bit of Eway here then.
- 1:24:30SPEAKER_01: So I'm on one four-three.
- 1:24:33SPEAKER_01: You're on uh 358, so you're on 143, you've got left.
- 1:24:43SPEAKER_01: So I I need to get I need to get 50 at least on this one to then pay attention to it in in what?
- 1:24:48SPEAKER_01: Do it in the little and it doesn't name a very bad horror film.
- 1:24:52SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, yeah, but there's one to have but is there if I name a horror film here that has less than 500 there's no chance.
- 1:24:57SPEAKER_01: Oh okay.
- 1:24:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:24:58SPEAKER_01: So I've got to get some so I've got to do something that's at least good.
- 1:25:02SPEAKER_01: At least good.
- 1:25:07SPEAKER_01: Oh, this is because now I'm trying to think, well maybe I kinda get two seventy two two around the seventies, maybe.
- 1:25:14SPEAKER_01: Um let's go for Rosemary's baby.
- 1:25:18SPEAKER_01: Old school.
- 1:25:19SPEAKER_00: I feel like that's gonna be around the 70s.
- 1:25:20SPEAKER_01: I think so.
- 1:25:23SPEAKER_01: 97.
- 1:25:25SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:25:26SPEAKER_01: Well, we did that.
- 1:25:27SPEAKER_01: We accomplished our task.
- 1:25:29SPEAKER_01: 455.
- 1:25:30SPEAKER_01: So that's uh 46.
- 1:25:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, 46 to go.
- 1:25:33SPEAKER_02: Good math.
- 1:25:34SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 1:25:35SPEAKER_01: Now we have to go some yeah, go some rough ones.
- 1:25:38SPEAKER_01: Um I'm looking at sort of films like the nun and sort of no no but I'm asking I'm asking us then.
- 1:25:44SPEAKER_01: I'm just I'm just I'm just spitboarding here.
- 1:25:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:25:46SPEAKER_01: And then the sequels.
- 1:25:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:25:48SPEAKER_01: Sequels I've drawn like the good.
- 1:25:49SPEAKER_01: Sequels are the good ones, I think.
- 1:25:51SPEAKER_01: You know, I'm conjuring.
- 1:25:52SPEAKER_01: I feel like one of the recent conjuring films must be around there.
- 1:25:55SPEAKER_01: See, these are the ones where I'm like, I had no idea what they could be.
- 1:25:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:25:59SPEAKER_01: Um, what was uh what was what am I on again?
- 1:26:03SPEAKER_01: 40.
- 1:26:04SPEAKER_02: Uh four you need uh 46.
- 1:26:08SPEAKER_01: Okay, so I'm gonna go I'm gonna go with the latest conjuring film, whatever that one is for last Rights?
- 1:26:16SPEAKER_01: Last Rights 57.
- 1:26:20SPEAKER_01: Too far.
- 1:26:22SPEAKER_01: 46.
- 1:26:23SPEAKER_01: Okay, well that's okay.
- 1:26:24SPEAKER_01: That's good to have a benchmark then.
- 1:26:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, that's good.
- 1:26:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:26:27SPEAKER_01: That's very close.
- 1:26:28SPEAKER_01: Not too bad, isn't it?
- 1:26:30SPEAKER_01: Not too bad, because you're kinda looking at it needs to be at least a two-star film.
- 1:26:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's something around that, isn't it?
- 1:26:37SPEAKER_01: That's higher than I was thinking as well.
- 1:26:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, same, same.
- 1:26:41SPEAKER_01: I think people have a lot of care for their friend Charlie's though, I think they're not.
- 1:26:45SPEAKER_01: Um then maybe let's go the nun two.
- 1:26:48SPEAKER_01: Is that have we are we on the nun?
- 1:26:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the nun two.
- 1:26:50SPEAKER_01: The nun two, yeah.
- 1:26:53SPEAKER_01: 51.
- 1:26:54SPEAKER_00: Oh, so close.
- 1:26:56SPEAKER_01: You're right there.
- 1:26:57SPEAKER_01: I'm like, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:26:59SPEAKER_01: You're gonna I think you're gonna do it.
- 1:27:00SPEAKER_01: No, I know.
- 1:27:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I yeah, those are my those are my couple that I thought in recent memory, I think.
- 1:27:10SPEAKER_01: Oh, no, I'm I again so I'm not a big horror fan, I will say, so I'm kind of I'm kind of thinking in recent memory what's gonna come because there's also been this is also it's quite a big horror in it in these songs.
- 1:27:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it has.
- 1:27:22SPEAKER_01: And now I'm thinking like again, I think sequels is the way to go.
- 1:27:25SPEAKER_01: And hanging back Texas Chase of Mascara sequels, how many of them they've been um Hustle, you know, hostle those ones, you know.
- 1:27:36SPEAKER_01: Honestly, I reckon hustle is probably a good hustle two.
- 1:27:39SPEAKER_01: You think hustle two?
- 1:27:39SPEAKER_01: Maybe let's go hustle two.
- 1:27:40SPEAKER_01: I think that's gonna be really low.
- 1:27:43SPEAKER_02: That was a hustle three, and you know that.
- 1:27:46SPEAKER_02: Hostel two forty four.
- 1:27:50SPEAKER_00: You found yourself.
- 1:27:52SPEAKER_00: Oh my you gotta get two.
- 1:27:54SPEAKER_01: Oh well that's oh oh jeez.
- 1:27:55SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay, 'cause you can get oh, cause it does, isn't it?
- 1:27:58SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm done then.
- 1:27:58SPEAKER_01: I think are there any are there any Are there any you can you can call it there and like be part you like can call it as that if you want?
- 1:28:04SPEAKER_01: Are there any films on uh are there any films that have two on Want tomorrow?
- 1:28:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there are.
- 1:28:08SPEAKER_02: I really I reckon it's gonna be like those it's gonna be like the niche the Jaws ones, I reckon.
- 1:28:14SPEAKER_01: The niche is things ever.
- 1:28:15SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be like the Jaws sequels and I don't think they'll even get I think it's gotta you gotta go really Two is hard.
- 1:28:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't think I mean that's such a shame comes up Jaws the Revenge seller though Is it is it possible?
- 1:28:30SPEAKER_01: It's possible Well let's go Jaws the Revenge then is I suppose that's what you said.
- 1:28:34SPEAKER_01: Oh did you a one?
- 1:28:35SPEAKER_01: It's a one isn't it?
- 1:28:36SPEAKER_01: It's a two Let's go let's say I'll play my wild card, draws the revenge there you go, you did it.
- 1:28:42SPEAKER_01: I made it in one, two, three, four, five, seven.
- 1:28:46SPEAKER_01: Top of the leaderboard.
- 1:28:48SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 1:28:50SPEAKER_00: We'll give it to you.
- 1:28:51SPEAKER_00: Well, it's a hard game, I'll give that to you.
- 1:28:53SPEAKER_01: It was very hard to end on 2% is hard.
- 1:28:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well even just yeah, just I mean, to get bang on.
- 1:29:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:29:00SPEAKER_01: I mean, I was getting I was getting close.
- 1:29:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:29:02SPEAKER_01: I'm surprised the country last rights has 57.
- 1:29:05SPEAKER_01: I'm so surprised.
- 1:29:06SPEAKER_01: Uh and yeah, even the nun, like over 50, the nun too, sorry, even over 50, but I guess that they're just uh these these sort of quiet, quite bang um horror films, probably just have a base level of people enjoying because of that.
- 1:29:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, probably.
- 1:29:18SPEAKER_02: Um, okay, so let's move on to the final thing.
- 1:29:20SPEAKER_02: So we um see you can go, but you like you're already wet and what have been late happening.
- 1:29:25SPEAKER_02: Um so you were talking about this beforehand, but a movie that's the reverse of this premise, which is a a movie that's well reviewed and well loved that you actually think is a bad movie.
- 1:29:34SPEAKER_01: So there's two films, and I will say, because these quickly come to mind in recent history, I will say these aren't critically phenomena, these aren't like masterpieces whatever, but they were generally received well critically and well by audiences.
- 1:29:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:29:49SPEAKER_01: And uh first one is The Fool Guy.
- 1:29:52SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:29:52SPEAKER_01: I didn't know I'd get on with this film at all.
- 1:29:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:29:54SPEAKER_01: It's tried for I haven't even seen it that like.
- 1:29:56SPEAKER_01: Ryan Goslin.
- 1:29:57SPEAKER_01: People love that.
- 1:29:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and um Emily Blunt.
- 1:30:01SPEAKER_01: I think it is, yes.
- 1:30:02SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:30:02SPEAKER_01: Um alongside some other good stars.
- 1:30:04SPEAKER_01: I mean, look, Ryan Gosling does a good performance as usual.
- 1:30:06SPEAKER_01: He's he plays that sort of lovable buffoon so well.
- 1:30:11SPEAKER_01: But it was just such a pointless movie.
- 1:30:13SPEAKER_01: I just I just thought people were gonna far sing it.
- 1:30:16SPEAKER_01: I didn't care about anyone.
- 1:30:17SPEAKER_01: I think Little I kinda moved.
- 1:30:19SPEAKER_01: They suddenly just decided that stunt men are also um superheroes, which I didn't quite get.
- 1:30:25SPEAKER_01: And I appreciate like the stunts are good, and it was all supposed to be a love letter to stunt men.
- 1:30:30SPEAKER_01: So?
- 1:30:30SPEAKER_01: You're still gonna have a good plot.
- 1:30:31SPEAKER_01: I thought the plot was ridiculous.
- 1:30:33SPEAKER_01: I just didn't care about anyone.
- 1:30:35SPEAKER_01: At the end, they were all they were all just zipping around on mobiles and something.
- 1:30:39SPEAKER_01: I was like, what's the point of all of this?
- 1:30:40SPEAKER_01: I just did not care for it at all.
- 1:30:42SPEAKER_01: Couldn't get on board.
- 1:30:43SPEAKER_01: First sort of hour, I was like, this is kind of fun.
- 1:30:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then it's second, and again, it's that thing of this could have been a 90-minute film, but of course, because it's got it's got Ryan Gosling, it's got a bit of Cena Warriors, it's got a real big film.
- 1:30:53SPEAKER_01: It's two hours, 15 minutes, or something like that.
- 1:30:55SPEAKER_01: It's dragged on and on.
- 1:30:57SPEAKER_01: And it wasn't funny.
- 1:30:58SPEAKER_01: I thought everyone was so painfully unfunny in it.
- 1:31:00SPEAKER_01: Oh, I mean, I thought um Ryan Gosling was giving his best go, and he's very funny, he's a very funny person, but like Emily, yeah, Emily Blunt.
- 1:31:07SPEAKER_01: Unfortunately, I found her like a bit like um, is it Andrew Scott's?
- 1:31:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um, a brilliant actor's car do comedy.
- 1:31:14SPEAKER_01: I've never found Andrew Scott funny or anything.
- 1:31:16SPEAKER_01: I feel for him because he obviously that it gets cast in comic roles a lot, he's because he did Fleabag.
- 1:31:21SPEAKER_01: I did, but he's not funny in Fleabag, he's deeply upsetting Fleabag.
- 1:31:26SPEAKER_01: And he but so I mean it was the same in the last Knives Out film.
- 1:31:29SPEAKER_01: I thought it was so unfunny in like it just couldn't you couldn't get that character right.
- 1:31:32SPEAKER_01: Like you'd miss Carl.
- 1:31:33SPEAKER_01: Well, I tell this by the way, phenomenal actor, great actor, same with Emily Blunt, yeah, phenomenal actors, both great, fantastic.
- 1:31:40SPEAKER_01: But I agree with you.
- 1:31:41SPEAKER_01: In this film, Emily Blunt, not funny, no chemistry, but I got told that they have great chemistry, did not see it at all.
- 1:31:46SPEAKER_01: She's just uh just not for me.
- 1:31:48SPEAKER_01: Um, and so and as a comedian watching these films, you know, you're judging people up my comic shops, and that's Brian Gosling and Barbie, I think, is just one of the best comic ODB actors, so sort of greedy greedy performances of all time.
- 1:31:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she's fantastic.
- 1:32:00SPEAKER_01: Um, so very disappointed by that.
- 1:32:02SPEAKER_01: And uh, other one is I saw it city.
- 1:32:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, oh god, I watched it on a plane.
- 1:32:08SPEAKER_01: Oh, it was so boring.
- 1:32:09SPEAKER_01: I honestly, and I didn't, and I wouldn't because I'm not this type of person.
- 1:32:14SPEAKER_01: I almost walked out.
- 1:32:15SPEAKER_01: I was yeah, and it's such an unenjoyable time at the end.
- 1:32:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was in the heat of summer in 2023, so it was air conditioned, so it was nice to be in that room.
- 1:32:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:32:22SPEAKER_01: But I just found it so dull.
- 1:32:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so uninteresting.
- 1:32:27SPEAKER_01: I mean, I kind of had an issue with I mean, you could almost put the lobster in this lobster I thought was good.
- 1:32:31SPEAKER_01: Oh, I love the lobster.
- 1:32:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, lobster I thought was good, but not great.
- 1:32:33SPEAKER_01: And I I don't get how people go spelling it.
- 1:32:35SPEAKER_01: I just get a bit sick and tired of the deadpan delivery.
- 1:32:39SPEAKER_01: And they're and it all almost the opposite of what I'm talking about with the Jurassic Worlds.
- 1:32:43SPEAKER_01: I'd rather have someone over the top than someone who's just ever well, not even someone, every single actor being saying it.
- 1:32:49SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, I Asteroid City, I just found so dull and dull, and I just got going meandering anyway.
- 1:32:57SPEAKER_01: I didn't really, there's not to root for really.
- 1:32:59SPEAKER_01: And there's a bit at the end where there's the kind of like the play and the writer talking about how to talk about death and stuff like that.
- 1:33:05SPEAKER_01: And it's kind of interesting.
- 1:33:06SPEAKER_01: I was like, that could have been a short film, yeah.
- 1:33:08SPEAKER_01: I could have been 10 minutes.
- 1:33:09SPEAKER_01: I just thought it was such a pointless movie, and it was just full with Anderson.
- 1:33:13SPEAKER_01: And I don't like yeah, when a director as we as that goes full with Anderson.
- 1:33:19SPEAKER_01: I mean, I do find that sometimes the Orbis Anthony, or sometimes I think yeah, this is great either palette cleanser for the other Hollywood films.
- 1:33:25SPEAKER_01: When you're actually sitting there and watching two, two and a half hours of the same tone the whole time, it's quite exhausting.
- 1:33:30SPEAKER_01: It's exhausting, yeah.
- 1:33:31SPEAKER_01: Um, that's why I quite like Bogonia because I felt that was a bit of a departure.
- 1:33:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, which I liked it.
- 1:33:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, in reality, it was and it was with characters you could actually meet in real life.
- 1:33:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 1:33:41SPEAKER_01: Um, but yes, no, I thought Asteroid said it.
- 1:33:44SPEAKER_01: God's hold a terrible worry in my phone, yeah.
- 1:33:46SPEAKER_01: So boring.
- 1:33:46SPEAKER_01: And that's a that's I'm watching that on a plane, we've got nothing else to do.
- 1:33:49SPEAKER_01: Oh god.
- 1:33:50SPEAKER_01: And I am I'm I would consider myself a Wes Anderson fan.
- 1:33:52SPEAKER_01: I think I am too grand and Bupes Hotel fan, mehastic newbie.
- 1:33:55SPEAKER_01: And it was funny, that finds funny, and that you know what I mean?
- 1:33:59SPEAKER_01: Um, and also the Life Aquatic, great, uh Moonrise Kingdom, great.
- 1:34:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um I it's there's loads of Wes Anderson that I've really enjoyed.
- 1:34:06SPEAKER_01: And I was just selling with recent ones are the ones where I'm kind of like, I'm a bit over this.
- 1:34:11SPEAKER_02: I'm just a bit over this now.
- 1:34:13SPEAKER_01: Well yeah, so he's at the French dispatch, and then afterwards to the French dispatch, I kind of half watched, I was doing other things.
- 1:34:19SPEAKER_01: I kind of enjoyed close to that.
- 1:34:21SPEAKER_01: And then the one with Venezuela del Toro, which I didn't watch, which was about like uh airs, he had certain airs to um uh he was gonna die or something.
- 1:34:31SPEAKER_01: Venetian scheme.
- 1:34:31SPEAKER_01: Venetian scheme.
- 1:34:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's a Venetian scheme.
- 1:34:34SPEAKER_01: The dogs are the dogs.
- 1:34:35SPEAKER_01: I like other dogs.
- 1:34:36SPEAKER_01: Right, that was quite good.
- 1:34:37SPEAKER_01: Or is he the French dispatch?
- 1:34:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the last three, I'm just kind of like just a bit over this now.
- 1:34:42SPEAKER_01: Ram Budapest Hotel, I love.
- 1:34:44SPEAKER_01: So good.
- 1:34:45SPEAKER_02: As in, and then beyond that, I've just been called that.
- 1:34:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm gonna get it a bit of a bell curve with him.
- 1:34:49SPEAKER_01: It's kind of he's run his tiny, got to ride with Grand Budapest and it's kind of maybe on the way to because I mean it's still incredible.
- 1:34:55SPEAKER_01: I almost think that similar with Nolan and Shamalan, it's incredible to have a style that you've made your own.
- 1:35:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, if anyone tried to copy, it'd be like you're copying Wes Anderson.
- 1:35:05SPEAKER_01: As an artist, it's incredible to do that.
- 1:35:07SPEAKER_01: When every film feels so similar, yeah, with the same actors, and you feel like you could just blur them together.
- 1:35:15SPEAKER_01: Is which Bill Murray film was this?
- 1:35:17SPEAKER_01: Which Yeah.
- 1:35:18SPEAKER_01: And and you want something like tell us, do you what and what I would say to Wes Anderson?
- 1:35:24SPEAKER_01: Do you have a story to tell now?
- 1:35:26SPEAKER_01: Why are you just making a film every two years because you can and you're allowed to, yeah, and you have as long as you keep making money?
- 1:35:32SPEAKER_01: And I get that, why not?
- 1:35:33SPEAKER_01: You know, not a lot of people get to keep making films.
- 1:35:35SPEAKER_01: If you keep making money, why not?
- 1:35:37SPEAKER_01: What is the story you're telling anymore?
- 1:35:38SPEAKER_01: Because I felt that's so deep because I was really sitting, oh yeah, let's have a bunch of cookie characters out in the what the Midwest, is it?
- 1:35:44SPEAKER_01: Um I always have in every film.
- 1:35:47SPEAKER_01: Same people talking, delivering everything in the same way, and and it's funny, no story.
- 1:35:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I found it really boring.
- 1:35:55SPEAKER_02: Now that's my might be my least favourite of his films.
- 1:35:58SPEAKER_02: Or they're like, I was just looking at the score.
- 1:36:00SPEAKER_02: It's really interesting to see the scores because like he's gone from like those films beforehand are all in the 90s and everything, and then he goes to these ones and they're like 75, 76, 77.
- 1:36:11SPEAKER_02: Just like very similar scores.
- 1:36:14SPEAKER_02: And it's just a dip, just a sudden dip.
- 1:36:17SPEAKER_02: That's what I'm bad.
- 1:36:18SPEAKER_02: Not bad by any means, but there's a different dip there.
- 1:36:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I have that issue with those.
- 1:36:22SPEAKER_01: I mean, look, I'll I'll be real with you guys.
- 1:36:23SPEAKER_01: I I get the premise on the podcast.
- 1:36:25SPEAKER_01: I I don't like Rotten Tomatoes, by the way.
- 1:36:27SPEAKER_02: Oh, I I that this is what this is one of the premises of the.
- 1:36:29SPEAKER_02: Oh, you're right.
- 1:36:29SPEAKER_02: So it's art of it.
- 1:36:30SPEAKER_02: I don't I never agree with this.
- 1:36:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because I don't like an aggregator.
- 1:36:33SPEAKER_01: I think you always know you're talking to an idiot when it comes to film.
- 1:36:36SPEAKER_01: When someone says their favourite film and you know it's because they've looked at Rotten Tomatoes' top 100 films and that's why they've said it.
- 1:36:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:36:41SPEAKER_01: Because films are deeply personal, they have a connection every film, it's always the time and life you're watching.
- 1:36:46SPEAKER_01: I've there's films I'm fond of Transformers.
- 1:36:49SPEAKER_01: I liked it the first time because I remember being a kind of teenager, Iron Man, and just being like, Yeah, hell yeah, Vlogbuster.
- 1:36:55SPEAKER_01: Like I was like 14, I was like, Yeah, just go to the cinema, I can't watch 15s yet, and then just watch them beef jelly Rob and then but I would not go and say these are great movies, left.
- 1:37:05SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, so I think well the fact that they're getting those scores still, I think is a kind of bit of cult of Wes Annison, to be honest.
- 1:37:14SPEAKER_01: And I think if if Asteroid City came out and it was from a new filmmaker and you'd never seen a Wes Anderson film before, you know, I think that people aren't saying that's a great film.
- 1:37:24SPEAKER_01: And also, interestingly, I think that would be a more interesting film because like what's this person doing?
- 1:37:28SPEAKER_01: But it wouldn't be a commercial success.
- 1:37:30SPEAKER_01: Oh no, and the fact that Wes Anderson has done films like this so much better, I find incredibly dull.
- 1:37:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I agree.
- 1:37:39SPEAKER_02: I agree.
- 1:37:40SPEAKER_02: I want to see him do something a little bit different now.
- 1:37:42SPEAKER_01: I would love him to make a Marvel film or something like that and say, like just some crazy, and that's what Edgar Wright, one of my favourite filmmakers, done a lot of different genres.
- 1:37:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he tries new things.
- 1:37:52SPEAKER_01: He makes documentaries, tries new things, he tries something new a bit.
- 1:37:55SPEAKER_01: And he has a style.
- 1:37:56SPEAKER_01: I watched The Running Man, I enjoyed it.
- 1:37:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:38:01SPEAKER_01: But for two hours, I was really enjoying it.
- 1:38:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:38:04SPEAKER_01: And that's a full-on American blockbuster.
- 1:38:07SPEAKER_01: That's not in any way a Twee English non-action film.
- 1:38:10SPEAKER_01: It is a full-on America fuck yeah, uh Robuster with all the satire of it and everything.
- 1:38:16SPEAKER_01: I mean it's great.
- 1:38:17SPEAKER_02: It's great, yeah.
- 1:38:18SPEAKER_02: It's fun.
- 1:38:18SPEAKER_02: I I enjoyed that.
- 1:38:19SPEAKER_02: And yeah, I agree.
- 1:38:20SPEAKER_02: Like Eka Wright, I really respect him because he still does something different every time, but still keep his style.
- 1:38:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:38:27SPEAKER_01: I had uh I had a interaction with him briefly when I was younger.
- 1:38:30SPEAKER_01: Um I was on my day job and I was at one of these events that I used to interviews at, and I saw he was speaking, so I was like, watch him shit, I'm gonna dip out here.
- 1:38:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I snu I snuck in and watched it, it was really interesting.
- 1:38:40SPEAKER_01: It came to the QA a bit, and I did my dissertation on the Cornetta trilogy.
- 1:38:44SPEAKER_01: Oh, no.
- 1:38:44SPEAKER_01: And I so I did it on it, I didn't do film at uni, but I did English Litch Show, but you were allowed to because they would film cause of souls.
- 1:38:50SPEAKER_01: I fucking're gonna watch films, yeah, in my dissertation.
- 1:38:52SPEAKER_01: And I told him that I did a QA and I asked him basically what my what my dissertation question was, which really fun to be able to ask him that.
- 1:39:00SPEAKER_01: Um and I there was a mic being passed around to and answer it.
- 1:39:05SPEAKER_01: But I was I was just like, look, look, my my voice is so loud and obnoxious, I'm I'm sure you'll hear me anyway, which you did hear me.
- 1:39:12SPEAKER_01: And I kind of got off and he kind of laughed there.
- 1:39:14SPEAKER_01: And he went, Oh, you don't sound obnoxious at all.
- 1:39:16SPEAKER_01: And uh I went, Well, you hang out with a lot of actors to your hand, but obnoxious people, you're not laugh.
- 1:39:23SPEAKER_01: He looked at me like, um, film career is very important.
- 1:39:26SPEAKER_01: Okay, okay, great.
- 1:39:28SPEAKER_01: Uh, but yeah, it says, uh, but yeah, he's uh great, great director.
- 1:39:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay.
- 1:39:32SPEAKER_01: This has been great.
- 1:39:33SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much for coming on.
- 1:39:34SPEAKER_00: This has been like really, really fun.
- 1:39:35SPEAKER_01: Is it but not?
- 1:39:36SPEAKER_01: I'll start surprised.
- 1:39:38SPEAKER_01: I'm just saying, this has been really fun.
- 1:39:40SPEAKER_01: Oh, well, thank you so much for having me.
- 1:39:41SPEAKER_01: Now I can sort of surprise us all.
- 1:39:43SPEAKER_01: I don't watch you on the boys.
- 1:39:44SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, I love I love film.
- 1:39:46SPEAKER_01: I'm no expans, but I love films, so I it's a pleasure to talk about it for a while.
- 1:39:49SPEAKER_01: So I appreciate you.
- 1:39:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, thank you so much.
- 1:39:51SPEAKER_01: Um how can we find you online?
- 1:39:53SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, Aliwoods Gigs, ALI Woods gigs.
- 1:39:56SPEAKER_01: I uh sign up to my newsletter to find out when I'm gigging near you.
- 1:39:59SPEAKER_01: That's the only way to find out.
- 1:40:00SPEAKER_01: And um, yeah, I just guessing the stuff if you like that.
- 1:40:03SPEAKER_01: And I'm actually gonna try my foreign foray into making some sort of short film.
- 1:40:07SPEAKER_01: So maybe we'll show up for that.
- 1:40:09SPEAKER_00: Only, yeah, everyone would have for that.
- 1:40:12SPEAKER_01: I think you've got all.
- 1:40:13SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
