- 5:18Speaker 1: Come through, Yes, and and other news Before we get
- 5:21Speaker 1: into our amazing interview for today, UM, we just want
- 5:24Speaker 1: to share some quick updates. Mala and I recently traveled
- 5:28Speaker 1: to Utah for like a little vacation, a little kind
- 5:31Speaker 1: of not a vacation, like a race, like I m
- 5:36Speaker 1: a whole half marathon casually in the snow. Um. Yeah,
- 5:40Speaker 1: so we were in Utah. Mala was amazing and she
- 5:44Speaker 1: came with to like hang out and support and um,
- 5:49Speaker 1: you know, be a little half marathon groupie. So you
- 5:53Speaker 1: know what a hottie. Um. And yeah, we drove up
- 5:57Speaker 1: to Utah, had a cute little road trip, visited the park,
- 6:01Speaker 1: ran a half marathon. Um, watched lots of reality TV
- 6:04Speaker 1: on our downtime. So Mala introduced me to the Real
- 6:08Speaker 1: Housewives of Salt Lake City. It was like a spiritual experience.
- 6:13Speaker 1: I will say that. No, but like no, lie Zion,
- 6:16Speaker 1: the National Park is so beautiful, gorgeous, gorgeous place, and
- 6:20Speaker 1: then to have the half marathon in that location was
- 6:25Speaker 1: just very fun and exciting and very like magical. It was.
- 6:30Speaker 1: It was so beautiful, um, and so I'm glad I
- 6:33Speaker 1: got to run. It wasn't through the National Park, but
- 6:36Speaker 1: it was like by proximity, like right by the National Park,
- 6:40Speaker 1: right up to the entrance, right up to the entrance,
- 6:43Speaker 1: So it was really beautiful. And yeah, I'm glad I
- 6:45Speaker 1: got to experience it with you and our friends and
- 6:48Speaker 1: like everything, it was so great. You ran a PR.
- 6:52Speaker 1: I ran a PR. I like set my personal record,
- 6:55Speaker 1: which was so exciting because my running coach. I hired
- 6:58Speaker 1: a running coach for this training round. I like ran
- 7:01Speaker 1: my first one so low, no no running coach, and
- 7:05Speaker 1: so I just wanted to compare and see the difference.
- 7:07Speaker 1: And so I hired a running coach and she just
- 7:10Speaker 1: basically flat out was like, look the PR that we
- 7:12Speaker 1: had like wanted to reach, Like it might not be
- 7:15Speaker 1: realistic because you're there's like you're like four thousand feet
- 7:19Speaker 1: above sea level. There's gonna be like some incline. It
- 7:23Speaker 1: might not be possible. It's going to be very cold,
- 7:26Speaker 1: you know, like your body might be realistically go into shocks.
- 7:28Speaker 1: So so like kind of set your expectations low, and
- 7:33Speaker 1: so I did. And so when I set my expectations low,
- 7:37Speaker 1: and I was like, you know what, it was going
- 7:38Speaker 1: to run and feel good and just see what happens,
- 7:41Speaker 1: and and that's it. I'm just going to focus on
- 7:43Speaker 1: feeling good. And then I you know, I met my
- 7:48Speaker 1: goal time and then lowered it and so I like
- 7:51Speaker 1: finished at two hours in nineteen and my goal was
- 7:53Speaker 1: to twenty and that's the goal that my coach was like,
- 7:56Speaker 1: that might not happen. And so when I passed the
- 8:00Speaker 1: twenty pacer, you know there's like pacers per mile grew
- 8:05Speaker 1: or per finished time, And when I passed the two
- 8:08Speaker 1: twenty pacers, I like immediately started crying because I was like,
- 8:11Speaker 1: oh my god, I'm like doing this, Like it's like
- 8:13Speaker 1: if I'm finishing faster than two twenty. So it was amazing.
- 8:18Speaker 1: And then Mama was there and like, you know, just
- 8:21Speaker 1: hearing her little scream while I while I was running through.
- 8:25Speaker 1: It was like such a daze. It was amazing. It
- 8:28Speaker 1: was really cool. I was like I was like cheering
- 8:30Speaker 1: up because I was so excited for you. I was like,
- 8:33Speaker 1: oh my god, she's really doing this in like weather. Yeah,
- 8:38Speaker 1: it snowed, it rained, it was cold. UM shout out
- 8:42Speaker 1: to my friend Brianna, who also ran UM, but she
- 8:44Speaker 1: like has she had been living on the East Coast
- 8:46Speaker 1: for six years, so she like gave me the tips.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Like so we bought handwarmers to like put inside of
- 8:52Speaker 1: our gloves and like that definitely saved me. Yeah, it
- 8:55Speaker 1: was quite it was quite chilly, and you know we're
- 8:57Speaker 1: so cal gals. And you had been trained in l
- 9:01Speaker 1: a weather, in beautiful, lovely l a weather, but you
- 9:05Speaker 1: killed it. It was so fun. So yeah, I'm a
- 9:08Speaker 1: half marathon grouping now and I'm like, okay, were you
- 9:10Speaker 1: guys running next? Yeah, so's the next one. Yes, it's
- 9:16Speaker 1: gonna be so cute. We're just gonna keep it going.
- 9:18Speaker 1: So fun. Athletics hobbies. We love it. We love it,
- 9:22Speaker 1: we love it. This is adult is not so bad. No,
- 9:26Speaker 1: you can do things like this. My favorite was like
- 9:28Speaker 1: the day before the race, our little friend group that
- 9:31Speaker 1: was there and you know, mama was with them, um
- 9:34Speaker 1: and she was like holding a picture and like holding
- 9:37Speaker 1: a glass of beer and was like, I love half
- 9:39Speaker 1: marathons and like meanwhile, the runners were like, you know,
- 9:43Speaker 1: we can't drink right, and we were like, yeah, sure,
- 9:48Speaker 1: this is fun. I love half marathons. Is so great.
- 9:54Speaker 1: I mean, you know, like, uh, we couldn't pass up
- 9:57Speaker 1: the opportunity to like stop by the brew They're like
- 10:01Speaker 1: in front of the National Park. I don't blame you.
- 10:03Speaker 1: It was just so scenic. Yeah, I don't. It's you know,
- 10:07Speaker 1: from what the only thing I know about Utah is
- 10:09Speaker 1: what i've seen on the Real Housewives of Salt Lake City,
- 10:11Speaker 1: of course, and they all claimed that like, oh, Utah
- 10:15Speaker 1: is so dry alcohol wise, like nobody's drinking, there's no alcohol,
- 10:19Speaker 1: but they're getting slashed every episode. And then there's this
- 10:23Speaker 1: really cute brewery right there, so you know, we we
- 10:27Speaker 1: decided to partake and we don't regret it, right, And
- 10:31Speaker 1: you shared with me that they don't serve alcohol before
- 10:34Speaker 1: eleven right on the weekends are always apparently, that's what
- 10:38Speaker 1: someone said to me, and I ran with it. Yeah.
- 10:42Speaker 1: She was a waitress at the restaurant that we went
- 10:45Speaker 1: to when we went to go have sandwiches m M.
- 10:48Speaker 1: And then Mama also tried to buy some myskal and
- 10:51Speaker 1: they were like what's that here. The woman who was
- 10:56Speaker 1: working m at the register was like, I think that's
- 10:59Speaker 1: a little too intense for Utah. And then there was
- 11:02Speaker 1: a white man there and he was very tall and
- 11:05Speaker 1: he like was like, what's miss call And I was like, well,
- 11:07Speaker 1: it's you know of the agave plans like from Mexico.
- 11:11Speaker 1: It's a liquor. And he looked at me like I
- 11:14Speaker 1: was nuts. He was He just he goes, Okay, they
- 11:21Speaker 1: don't know what they're missing. No, so we can visit Utah,
- 11:25Speaker 1: but we can't stay for too long. They don't have
- 11:27Speaker 1: miss call. Also, weed is like painfully illegal out there. Yeah,
- 11:31Speaker 1: that's not gonna work. It's not gonna work. But beautiful, um,
- 11:36Speaker 1: you know mountains. Much beauty, much beauty, so lovely, much beauty.
- 11:44Speaker 1: But yes, so proud of Yosa, so proud of the runners.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Um good times. Yeah, thanks love. So for today, we
- 11:52Speaker 1: have a really great interview with one of our longtime
- 11:56Speaker 1: listeners and also fellow creative and friend, Jen Torres a
- 12:01Speaker 1: k A. Jen from the Block. So, Mama, tell us
- 12:04Speaker 1: about Jen Torres. We love Jen, um. We have loved
- 12:10Speaker 1: seeing Jen grow over the years and become the multi
- 12:14Speaker 1: talented creator that she is today. Jen is from the
- 12:18Speaker 1: three to three South Central Los Angeles. She's an l
- 12:21Speaker 1: A batty Jen Models, She's a stylist, she's a director,
- 12:25Speaker 1: and she has been producing her own passion projects for
- 12:29Speaker 1: brands like foot Locker Women, Nike Women, and foot Locker
- 12:32Speaker 1: l A. Her passion is very deeply rooted in her
- 12:36Speaker 1: love for her city. She showcases the beauty of the
- 12:38Speaker 1: hood and Jen is known for her gorgeous, curly hair,
- 12:42Speaker 1: her curlic nails that are always on point. She really
- 12:45Speaker 1: rocks the square and not everybody can. And she just
- 12:50Speaker 1: has a very iconic l A style. You've probably seen
- 12:53Speaker 1: her on the gram. If you haven't, you're not following
- 12:55Speaker 1: the right people. Not only is Jen creative, but she's
- 12:59Speaker 1: also an educated I met Jen when we were both
- 13:01Speaker 1: working in education. I was teaching. Jen was with Planned Parenthood.
- 13:06Speaker 1: We were at a sexual health summit and in front
- 13:08Speaker 1: of her boss at the time, I was like, Jen,
- 13:10Speaker 1: I think you should quit your job and pursue modeling
- 13:13Speaker 1: full time and her boss was like what, but everybody agreed,
- 13:17Speaker 1: like this is Jen's calling. So she really has a
- 13:21Speaker 1: vast experience teaching comprehensive sexual health education to young people
- 13:25Speaker 1: around l A. And we love her for it. So
- 13:27Speaker 1: we hope you guys enjoyed this interview and and and
- 14:00Speaker 1: m m m m m m of it and little
- 14:14Speaker 1: ship Alright, local Motives. We are super excited to introduce
- 14:22Speaker 1: our next guest that you may already know from the
- 14:24Speaker 1: Internet or you may have seen her in our past
- 14:27Speaker 1: short film Looky Best Anonymous, but we are going to
- 14:31Speaker 1: be talking today to the super talented, multifaceted Jen Torres
- 14:37Speaker 1: a k A. Gen from the Block. Hey girl, welcome
- 14:40Speaker 1: to Look at Our Radio. Hello, thank you so much
- 14:44Speaker 1: for having me. I literally was like, right before this
- 14:47Speaker 1: UM interview, I was I was on the phone call
- 14:49Speaker 1: with my friend and I was like, oh my god,
- 14:51Speaker 1: I'm going to be on the podcast with Look at Us.
- 14:54Speaker 1: And I've always wanted to have, you know, like a
- 14:56Speaker 1: single podcast or it's just a little all about me,
- 14:58Speaker 1: you know, And I'm just We're grateful. I love y'all.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Obviously in this interview will get into like why our
- 15:05Speaker 1: bond is just it's beautiful. So I'm really excited. Thank
- 15:10Speaker 1: you all again for having me. I'm I'm really excited. Yes,
- 15:14Speaker 1: we are really excited too, because we love you. For
- 15:18Speaker 1: all of our listeners at home, we are obsessed with
- 15:22Speaker 1: Jen from the Block, and I mean that in every
- 15:24Speaker 1: sense of the word. We have been following Jen's budding
- 15:28Speaker 1: and blossoming career as a fashion icon since she was
- 15:33Speaker 1: a college student at the Claremont College. Is honey, the
- 15:37Speaker 1: Harvard of the West, Get it right, Jen? Can you
- 15:41Speaker 1: take us there? Take us back to that day when
- 15:44Speaker 1: we met on the Pittskurg Pittskurg campus, pittsur okay whatever, okay. Um.
- 15:54Speaker 1: I remember it was, I believe my my senior year
- 16:00Speaker 1: because I remember I was like freshly like single, and
- 16:03Speaker 1: I had my home girl who was like, let's um,
- 16:06Speaker 1: let's go to this event. Um, there's gonna be like
- 16:08Speaker 1: a podcast. Due they're they're latinas, they're awesome. And I
- 16:13Speaker 1: was just like podcast at that time, I thought it
- 16:15Speaker 1: was such like a like a white thing. I was
- 16:18Speaker 1: like podcast, like a nerdy bark, like a nerdy white thing. Yeah.
- 16:23Speaker 1: And I was just like okay. And then we went
- 16:27Speaker 1: because she was like, now they're super cool, like they're
- 16:30Speaker 1: just like us, like their batties, and I was like okay, okay, okay.
- 16:34Speaker 1: So we went and y'all were I believe it was
- 16:38Speaker 1: like a live show or was it more of an interview.
- 16:41Speaker 1: I don't I can talk. It was a talk yeah,
- 16:46Speaker 1: about stories and narrative, I believe, and it was just amazing.
- 16:50Speaker 1: I think after that I started, I listened to all
- 16:53Speaker 1: of your podcasts that same nine. I was like so hooked.
- 16:56Speaker 1: I was like, they're great. They literally are going through
- 16:59Speaker 1: the same thing that I'm going through, and I could
- 17:01Speaker 1: and I could really relate to it because being first
- 17:04Speaker 1: gen going to a p W I and you know,
- 17:08Speaker 1: going back home and like it was just like a
- 17:11Speaker 1: big culture shock already, and it was just really it
- 17:14Speaker 1: felt great to see that there was another, like other
- 17:17Speaker 1: people out there experiencing the same thing that was experiencing
- 17:20Speaker 1: because it was so hard to say it in words
- 17:22Speaker 1: or put in words that y'all I would literally talk
- 17:25Speaker 1: about all the time on your podcast at that time,
- 17:27Speaker 1: which I really loved a lot. So that's how we
- 17:30Speaker 1: met at an event in my school that y'all had
- 17:33Speaker 1: to talk and I and I still have the photo too.
- 17:36Speaker 1: I remember exactly what I was wearing. I was wearing
- 17:39Speaker 1: this like green mesh seed through long sleep with like
- 17:42Speaker 1: I believe, like my Eliah T shirt and some distressed genes. Yes,
- 17:49Speaker 1: I still had the photo too, because I remember when
- 17:52Speaker 1: the four of us took the photo, I was like, Wow,
- 17:54Speaker 1: this is like the best photo we've ever taken. You
- 17:59Speaker 1: would have fall. Everyone was glowing like fabulous, a beautiful photo,
- 18:03Speaker 1: and I was like, while we're going to post this
- 18:05Speaker 1: one for sure, um, because you know what it's like
- 18:08Speaker 1: being in those university rooms, like the lighting is not
- 18:11Speaker 1: cute and you feel kind of icky sometimes, and so
- 18:16Speaker 1: it was definitely a beautiful photo. Memorable for us because
- 18:19Speaker 1: we met you and then we kept up with your
- 18:23Speaker 1: your work, your career and after school after you graduated,
- 18:28Speaker 1: what did you what did you work on? What were
- 18:31Speaker 1: you what was your focus? Yeah, So after I graduated,
- 18:34Speaker 1: I gret I created my major in public health and
- 18:36Speaker 1: community health. So I created my own major at Picture
- 18:39Speaker 1: that allowed you to do that, which was like really amazing. UM.
- 18:43Speaker 1: And what I did afterwards is I became a sexual
- 18:47Speaker 1: health educator at a nonprofit, which was really amazing. I
- 18:52Speaker 1: had a really great experience. UM. I worked in schools
- 18:56Speaker 1: at l a U s D. And I taught sex
- 18:58Speaker 1: health in middle schools and high schools, and I also
- 19:01Speaker 1: lead um basically pure health leadership programs around those schools.
- 19:09Speaker 1: And the reason why I also got that job too
- 19:11Speaker 1: was because when I was in high school, I did
- 19:13Speaker 1: that same program but as a student. But now I was,
- 19:17Speaker 1: you know, like working, I was a little bit of
- 19:19Speaker 1: a baby adult, and I was leading those those programs,
- 19:23Speaker 1: and I was teaching sex said and talking about the
- 19:27Speaker 1: difference between gender and sex and sexuality and trying to
- 19:32Speaker 1: have you know, really honest conversations on sexual health and
- 19:36Speaker 1: also making sure, I'm providing a safe space for these
- 19:40Speaker 1: like young adults, like students that have so many questions
- 19:44Speaker 1: but they're too scared to ask or don't know where
- 19:47Speaker 1: to go. And and that was my job. I did
- 19:49Speaker 1: that for about maybe two years. But before I got
- 19:53Speaker 1: that job, I was a pure health educator at my
- 19:56Speaker 1: college for about three years. So I was already doing
- 19:58Speaker 1: sexual health education since forever and before that in high
- 20:02Speaker 1: school too, so I was kind of seasoned a little bit.
- 20:05Speaker 1: You were very well seasoned, clearly very well seasoned, and
- 20:10Speaker 1: our paths crossed yet again ye at the sexual health
- 20:13Speaker 1: summit because you were sex educating. I was sex educating.
- 20:18Speaker 1: And I remember Jens sitting there in front of your
- 20:21Speaker 1: boss at the time, and I was like, Jen, you
- 20:24Speaker 1: need to be a full time model. Quit your job
- 20:28Speaker 1: with this job and do content full time and model
- 20:31Speaker 1: full time. And you're and you were like, like, my
- 20:34Speaker 1: boss is right here. But she was like, no, it's true.
- 20:37Speaker 1: She's like, no, it's true. You should Oh yeah it is.
- 20:41Speaker 1: Because at that time I was still working at the
- 20:43Speaker 1: nonprofit and stuff, and my co workers I still love
- 20:47Speaker 1: them to this day, like, honestly, like I was really
- 20:49Speaker 1: lucky to have really great coworkers because they still are like, Jenn,
- 20:53Speaker 1: you're doing so great all of this. And I remember
- 20:56Speaker 1: at that time, I was still you know, I was
- 20:58Speaker 1: kind of getting my feet with to modeling. So I
- 21:01Speaker 1: would kind of model sometimes obviously not not fully, but
- 21:05Speaker 1: whenever I could get a job on the weekends, I would,
- 21:08Speaker 1: you know, model, or I would make content. But I'll
- 21:10Speaker 1: make content like on my own time. And if you know,
- 21:14Speaker 1: working nonprofit is really exhausting. Um, you literally are working,
- 21:19Speaker 1: you know, nine to five, but you are still your work.
- 21:23Speaker 1: You have literally so many you are different hats basically,
- 21:26Speaker 1: and you kind of have to be very flexible. I
- 21:29Speaker 1: love when they use that you have to be flexible
- 21:32Speaker 1: is definitely a nonprofit word. Oh yeah, different hats for
- 21:37Speaker 1: all the nonprofit people out there. I see you. I
- 21:40Speaker 1: love y'all. I hope you're all doing okay and taking
- 21:43Speaker 1: time and self caring as much as y'all can. Okay,
- 21:46Speaker 1: we're in solidarity. Yeah, we are in one thou percent
- 21:51Speaker 1: as folks that have survived the nonprofit industrial complex as well.
- 21:55Speaker 1: It sounds like you had a very good experience though
- 21:58Speaker 1: unlike us, but still doesn't mean it wasn't tiring. And
- 22:02Speaker 1: exhausting and all of that stuff as well. Um, so
- 22:05Speaker 1: let's talk about this transition. So you were a sexual
- 22:08Speaker 1: health educator for many years, very well seasoned, and then
- 22:12Speaker 1: you make this jump to be a full time creative model,
- 22:17Speaker 1: creative director, all of the above. How was that taking
- 22:22Speaker 1: that leap? Taking that jump? Oh my god? It honestly
- 22:26Speaker 1: it's it's honestly kind of wildhood all happened because I
- 22:31Speaker 1: wasn't expecting to ever do something full time. You know.
- 22:35Speaker 1: I always thought, like, you know, I had to have
- 22:37Speaker 1: a nine five, like, you know, I just have to
- 22:40Speaker 1: have it, and then this is just kind of like
- 22:42Speaker 1: my side stuff. But then during quarantine, you know, everything
- 22:47Speaker 1: really shifted, really shifted. So during when we were in quarantine,
- 22:53Speaker 1: you know, I still had to work a lot on
- 22:55Speaker 1: a nonprofit job. And then I get hit up by
- 22:59Speaker 1: full Locker for Locker Women and Nike Women and to
- 23:05Speaker 1: be like, hey, um, would you want to be a
- 23:08Speaker 1: creator for for us? You'll be basically like paid monthly
- 23:12Speaker 1: to create stuff for us, and we would really love
- 23:15Speaker 1: you to be a part of this. And I interviewed
- 23:17Speaker 1: for it. They interviewed me first, and they loved me
- 23:20Speaker 1: because I mean then it just felt perfect, Like obviously,
- 23:25Speaker 1: but it just felt perfect. That was like okay, And
- 23:30Speaker 1: I remember it was during like Cancer season two, so
- 23:32Speaker 1: it was like during my birthday time when I got
- 23:34Speaker 1: interviewed and I was like, I hope I get it,
- 23:36Speaker 1: but you know, if I don't, then it's cool. I
- 23:39Speaker 1: think it's just still really great that like I'm people,
- 23:42Speaker 1: the people recognize me to be like yo, like you're
- 23:45Speaker 1: kind of dope, like we kind of want you and
- 23:47Speaker 1: our team. And then I got into reck Room and
- 23:50Speaker 1: it reck Room was a collective of creators around l
- 23:54Speaker 1: A so women creative. So I think we were about
- 23:57Speaker 1: we were five. I don't I'm missing anybody. Yeah, we're
- 24:01Speaker 1: about five or six girls. And we were creating content
- 24:06Speaker 1: for full Locker Women and Nike Women and we were
- 24:08Speaker 1: getting paid monthly and we had our own space. And
- 24:11Speaker 1: then that's when I had to make a decision. I
- 24:13Speaker 1: had to make an executive decision of my life of like, Okay,
- 24:17Speaker 1: this is kind of a full time job and you
- 24:19Speaker 1: kind of already have a full time job, and it
- 24:22Speaker 1: was scary. It was literally I was like but to
- 24:26Speaker 1: be honest, at that time, working at my nonprofit job,
- 24:30Speaker 1: I was really burnt out, Like I was like, Okay,
- 24:34Speaker 1: I feel like what's keeping me here? Are like my
- 24:36Speaker 1: students and like my co workers that I love very
- 24:38Speaker 1: very much, but it's just not where it used to
- 24:41Speaker 1: be anymore. And that was just the reality of it.
- 24:45Speaker 1: And I felt very conflicted because I love my job.
- 24:47Speaker 1: I felt like my my job is super important and
- 24:50Speaker 1: I knew it was really important, and I was like, I,
- 24:51Speaker 1: I gotta do it for my community. But then I
- 24:54Speaker 1: was like, yo, like I gotta do this for myself.
- 24:57Speaker 1: And I was like and so I leaved. I it
- 25:00Speaker 1: really sent in my two weeks notice and I was
- 25:01Speaker 1: like yo, like hey, um, I'm out, you know. And
- 25:07Speaker 1: they they understood, and I feel like they kind of
- 25:10Speaker 1: saw it coming for sure because they were aware of
- 25:13Speaker 1: the of the opportunity that I got and they were like,
- 25:16Speaker 1: this is definitely, this is definitely what you should be doing.
- 25:19Speaker 1: I was like, yeah, I should, like and that's the
- 25:22Speaker 1: type of person I am. I feel like I'm very like, man,
- 25:24Speaker 1: fuck it, like I'm just gonna do it, Like what's
- 25:26Speaker 1: the worst that could happen? And I jumped and that's
- 25:29Speaker 1: how it all started. So that's when I was like
- 25:32Speaker 1: I could do this kind of full time and red
- 25:36Speaker 1: Room was such a really amazing experience. The team was
- 25:39Speaker 1: amazing because obviously it was not just us that we're,
- 25:43Speaker 1: you know, doing content. We also had a whole team
- 25:45Speaker 1: behind us that made sure that, you know, the content
- 25:48Speaker 1: that we made was exactly what we wanted. They literally
- 25:51Speaker 1: would listen to everything that we would say, like, hey,
- 25:53Speaker 1: like I kind of wanted to be this way. I
- 25:55Speaker 1: kind of wanted to be that way. For last year's
- 25:57Speaker 1: Latin next Um Heritage Month, me and j and I
- 26:00Speaker 1: actually did something really huge and we directed it, which
- 26:04Speaker 1: was like one of our first times that we directed
- 26:07Speaker 1: something this huge for full locker women, Like huh like wild.
- 26:12Speaker 1: That was so wild to me at that time. I
- 26:14Speaker 1: was just kind of like, am I director, and I life,
- 26:17Speaker 1: what did you direct? So it was for reck Room
- 26:21Speaker 1: and during the time it was it was during this
- 26:24Speaker 1: time last year where it was like got the next
- 26:25Speaker 1: Heritage Month and they kind of wanted us to create
- 26:28Speaker 1: something around familia and community. So UM, we kind of
- 26:33Speaker 1: came together and we hired an amazing DP in Crypt
- 26:36Speaker 1: Los Angeles, who I still work with to this day
- 26:39Speaker 1: and is who is amazing DP director. Definitely check her
- 26:43Speaker 1: out and we created a piece on community around sneakers too,
- 26:49Speaker 1: and we were able to like hire our friends or
- 26:51Speaker 1: not hire our friends. They came, you know, our friends
- 26:56Speaker 1: came in and they got showcased in the video and
- 26:59Speaker 1: it was really cool. It was it was I remember
- 27:03Speaker 1: seeing the last the last version of it, and I
- 27:06Speaker 1: was like, oh my god, we came up with this,
- 27:08Speaker 1: but obviously we had help. Obviously we can't take the
- 27:10Speaker 1: whole credit, but it was still our minds were like, Wow,
- 27:14Speaker 1: our minds are amazing. And that's kind of how that
- 27:19Speaker 1: first little I guess like fire came in my head
- 27:22Speaker 1: where I was just like, wait, I could kind of
- 27:25Speaker 1: do this and maybe I'm not just the model. And
- 27:29Speaker 1: after Recruit, when Recorom kind of wrapped up, um, you know,
- 27:33Speaker 1: full locker, La hit me up and was like, hey, like,
- 27:36Speaker 1: would you still be down to like style or would
- 27:39Speaker 1: you still be down to creative direct? And I was like, yeah,
- 27:43Speaker 1: I'm down like the so ID. So then I started
- 27:47Speaker 1: doing styling a lot, and if y'all know me, I
- 27:50Speaker 1: love clothes. I love fashion, like you know, styling, and
- 27:54Speaker 1: I was like, Okay, I think I could do this.
- 27:56Speaker 1: But once I started doing styling I realized it's another
- 27:59Speaker 1: ball arc, you know, and it was something that I
- 28:01Speaker 1: had to relearn and learn and kind of do it
- 28:04Speaker 1: the way that you know, professional stylists do. I'm still
- 28:07Speaker 1: I still wouldn't say that I'm like super professional stylists,
- 28:10Speaker 1: Like I'm still learning, but it was really cool that
- 28:13Speaker 1: I was like, Okay, I could kind of do this,
- 28:15Speaker 1: you know, let's keep trying, let's keep you know, we'll
- 28:18Speaker 1: we'll work on that scale. And then I got a
- 28:21Speaker 1: directing gig for Pride for Adidas and foot Locker l A,
- 28:26Speaker 1: which was like super cool. I actually hired my friends
- 28:30Speaker 1: this time around, and we filmed at Alesia Park and
- 28:34Speaker 1: it was so beautiful, so queer, so amazing. Um, the
- 28:39Speaker 1: team was great. My best friend Daniels, a photographer and
- 28:43Speaker 1: in crypt Los Angeles, also the DP and editor again
- 28:48Speaker 1: and it was amazing and great, and once again I
- 28:52Speaker 1: was like, Okay, I could do this. This is really cool,
- 28:56Speaker 1: like nice. And ever since then, I've just been kind
- 28:59Speaker 1: of doing a lot of stuff. So if I'm not modeling,
- 29:02Speaker 1: if I'm not creating content, I'm like styling, or I'm
- 29:07Speaker 1: like you know, d P and not d PIN, I'm
- 29:09Speaker 1: like directing or I'm act or I'm just like a
- 29:13Speaker 1: production assistant. Recently, this weekend, I actually went to Mexico,
- 29:17Speaker 1: so you that Mexico to to p A for Lubmerica
- 29:21Speaker 1: and Nike. I was like, huh, and I got to
- 29:24Speaker 1: see the classical game, which is Chivas Versus America. Obviously
- 29:29Speaker 1: I was working, but still I was like, okay, cool,
- 29:33Speaker 1: And it was once again one of those moments where
- 29:35Speaker 1: I was like, you know what, you gotta jump. You
- 29:38Speaker 1: might not be like, you know, maybe peeing isn't like
- 29:40Speaker 1: your your passion, but like just jump, like you'll learn
- 29:44Speaker 1: so much. And I learned so much. I learned how
- 29:46Speaker 1: to do audio. I know how to like take down
- 29:49Speaker 1: a camera, build a camera. Like I was like, nice, okay,
- 29:53Speaker 1: cool thing what I've been kind of doing. Honestly, I've
- 29:58Speaker 1: just been jumping into anything anything that obviously I feel
- 30:03Speaker 1: isn't larning with myself, and yeah, I just don't. I
- 30:06Speaker 1: think that's my area is rising though. For sure, I'm like, man,
- 30:09Speaker 1: just do it. And I'm like, okay, well you're killing it.
- 30:11Speaker 1: You're killing the game. You are just like an undeniable
- 30:15Speaker 1: talent and like style legend, like for sure not surprised that,
- 30:21Speaker 1: you know, these major campaigns want you to style for them,
- 30:24Speaker 1: because even even you know, um, I think like years ago,
- 30:29Speaker 1: like it was very evident that the girl has style okay,
- 30:33Speaker 1: and the girl can take off. I mean it's like yeah.
- 30:37Speaker 1: And so to see like how far you come and
- 30:39Speaker 1: the way you've developed as a professional as an artist
- 30:43Speaker 1: in front of the camera and behind the camera is
- 30:46Speaker 1: just really incredible and we're so proud of you, and
- 30:49Speaker 1: I just yeah, I don't know, I'm just thrilled, like
- 30:53Speaker 1: so so thrilled, so excited for you. We love watching
- 30:57Speaker 1: you grow. Um, I feel like you're like our little sister.
- 31:01Speaker 1: You know that we're like watching girl like our little Putima.
- 31:04Speaker 1: You know. So my question for you a fun question.
- 31:07Speaker 1: Who are some of your style in supposed Oh my god.
- 31:10Speaker 1: Number one is my mom. I'm gonna send you all
- 31:13Speaker 1: a photo of my mom like in the nineties. You're
- 31:18Speaker 1: gonna be like, oh, that's where you get it from.
- 31:20Speaker 1: I'm like, okay, I'm so excited. She's a battie. Like
- 31:24Speaker 1: I was like, okay, I kind of want to recreate
- 31:26Speaker 1: one of her photos. I think that'd be kind of sick,
- 31:29Speaker 1: you have to that would be love the gift also
- 31:32Speaker 1: like that you give your mom, I know, and my
- 31:34Speaker 1: mom's the one that has always been the one rooting
- 31:37Speaker 1: for me. Also my dad as well, but I feel
- 31:39Speaker 1: like my mom has always been like, yeah, that's what
- 31:41Speaker 1: you want to do, Just do it? Like yeah, what
- 31:44Speaker 1: what do your parents say that you do? Like can
- 31:48Speaker 1: they drive it? No? So my mom and my dad
- 31:52Speaker 1: just tells everybody that I'm a model just yea yeah,
- 31:57Speaker 1: and like that's kind of which is fine. But my
- 31:59Speaker 1: mom is like super excited and just like really great.
- 32:02Speaker 1: I recently came out in a magazine too Um with
- 32:07Speaker 1: my friends as well, and they sent us like the
- 32:10Speaker 1: physical copy of the magazine, and when it came when
- 32:12Speaker 1: it was delivered at my house, my mom literally took
- 32:15Speaker 1: it from my room and I just saw her with
- 32:18Speaker 1: her little glasses sitting in the living room like reading
- 32:22Speaker 1: my part of the magazine, and I was like, mom,
- 32:24Speaker 1: do you like if? She was like, see, it's really cute,
- 32:28Speaker 1: good job, good job, thanks long, how cute. I love that.
- 32:35Speaker 1: And my dad is just like I feel like he
- 32:39Speaker 1: understands what I'm doing in a sense. Obviously it's not
- 32:43Speaker 1: your traditional nine o five, but he's like as long
- 32:46Speaker 1: as you're happy, Mika, Okay, okay, And that's kind of much.
- 32:50Speaker 1: That's kind of how pretty much it. That's so sweet
- 32:54Speaker 1: and so cute. We're always dying to know, like if
- 32:57Speaker 1: parents know what their kids do, like you know, like
- 33:01Speaker 1: we've shared afore. Malamala's dad would call the podcast a
- 33:04Speaker 1: blog for a blog cast, you know. Um, you know,
- 33:11Speaker 1: they do their best to describe what we do. Um,
- 33:14Speaker 1: so we're always curious. But like going back to your
- 33:17Speaker 1: style in suppose because I did interrupt with another question, Um,
- 33:21Speaker 1: what are four some other style? And suppose you shared
- 33:24Speaker 1: your mom but are there any others? Definitely my mom? Um.
- 33:28Speaker 1: There is this influencer on Instagram that has been one
- 33:31Speaker 1: of my favorite influencers since forever because she knows how
- 33:35Speaker 1: to do color so well, and y'all know me, I
- 33:38Speaker 1: love bright colors, you know. I love a good bright outfit,
- 33:41Speaker 1: like her name is was Good. And she's also like
- 33:44Speaker 1: a big sneaker head too, and I just love it
- 33:47Speaker 1: because I feel like she brings in so many elements
- 33:50Speaker 1: into like her style, and so many textures into her look.
- 33:54Speaker 1: And she has nails and y'all know I'm a nail queen.
- 33:58Speaker 1: And it's your you are right now. They're little babies.
- 34:02Speaker 1: But that's because I had a modeling gig that they
- 34:05Speaker 1: were like, hey, like your nails are kind of a
- 34:07Speaker 1: little bit extra. Like I was like, okay, whatever, You've
- 34:14Speaker 1: been playing a lot with those more like I guess
- 34:18Speaker 1: now are they considered vintage? Those designs that like you
- 34:23Speaker 1: would see at the salon, maybe more in the two
- 34:26Speaker 1: thousand's the air brush, the air brush. You've been rocking
- 34:30Speaker 1: a lot of that recently. I have noticed with the square,
- 34:34Speaker 1: I'm my favorite nail shape is square, has always been
- 34:37Speaker 1: square and in a French tip. But right now I'm
- 34:40Speaker 1: really playing playing with like, you know, the old, old
- 34:44Speaker 1: old old like nail designs and like paying homage to
- 34:47Speaker 1: it one because I feel like kind of afford it.
- 34:49Speaker 1: And my nail tech the one that I'm currently like
- 34:53Speaker 1: working with, She's great nails is a bay. You can
- 34:57Speaker 1: also see um. I have her tag literally everywhere, even
- 35:00Speaker 1: on my Instagram my nail highlight. All of my nail
- 35:03Speaker 1: techs are highlighted there. They make the world go go around.
- 35:07Speaker 1: I love them. But yeah, I've been doing a lot
- 35:09Speaker 1: of you know, old quote unquote vintage with quotes around them,
- 35:14Speaker 1: but just to pay, just to pay homage to literally
- 35:18Speaker 1: like my theaz that would literally that would literally rock
- 35:22Speaker 1: those types of nails. But I was like too young
- 35:24Speaker 1: to rock them because my own were like, girl, what
- 35:26Speaker 1: you're doing? They're mature? Yeah, And I was like, Okay,
- 35:30Speaker 1: well now I'm grown, so I'm about to get all
- 35:33Speaker 1: of them. So what's up? My mom? My mom? Is
- 35:37Speaker 1: my One of my um stalent sposed was good. Um,
- 35:41Speaker 1: And I feel like this might not be like a
- 35:44Speaker 1: person but just people, but literally women that I grew
- 35:47Speaker 1: up around in my community. So I'm from South Central, UM,
- 35:51Speaker 1: you know, I ripped the three two three. I'm from
- 35:53Speaker 1: what's like Watson Compton. I feel like it's literally all
- 35:57Speaker 1: over my page. I'm really proud of where I come from.
- 36:00Speaker 1: And um, a lot of my style and spoke comes
- 36:03Speaker 1: from that comes from, you know, rocking like dickies. It
- 36:06Speaker 1: comes from rocking sneakers, hoops, jewelry, nails, my hair. My
- 36:11Speaker 1: hair is super big and super curly sometimes and I
- 36:15Speaker 1: love it. My eyeliner, my lip liner. You know, it
- 36:18Speaker 1: comes from you know, growing up and being around women
- 36:23Speaker 1: that would literally rock these types of like styles and
- 36:26Speaker 1: stuff and trying to kind of, you know, make my own,
- 36:30Speaker 1: like put my own spin to it, because I think
- 36:31Speaker 1: that's the thing about fashion and styling. It's like whatever
- 36:34Speaker 1: makes you feel good as long as if you make
- 36:36Speaker 1: it yours. And it's not necessarily like a super copy
- 36:39Speaker 1: because you can't copy anything if it's literally like you're
- 36:42Speaker 1: like you put your own twist to it, and all
- 36:44Speaker 1: you can do is pay, like to pay homage to it.
- 36:46Speaker 1: So that's kind of where I get all my style from,
- 36:49Speaker 1: is like my mom was good, that influencer and literally
- 36:53Speaker 1: the women that grew up in my community. So it's
- 36:54Speaker 1: kind of like a mix of everything. And it's so
- 36:56Speaker 1: funny because I feel like I can never necessarily say
- 37:00Speaker 1: what exactly is my style because I feel like I
- 37:03Speaker 1: switched it up so much and I feel like it's
- 37:05Speaker 1: such a mood thing. I'm such a cancer that literally
- 37:08Speaker 1: dressed based off of my mood because my mood changes
- 37:11Speaker 1: all the time. Sometimes I feel like super super girly.
- 37:14Speaker 1: Now we're like long skirts or whatever. But sometimes I'm
- 37:17Speaker 1: going to put some sneakers on it, you know, or
- 37:19Speaker 1: sometimes they're gonna, you know, slip back my hair. It's
- 37:22Speaker 1: just you'll never know. And I think that's great. Get
- 37:27Speaker 1: I always look forward to seeing like what you have
- 37:29Speaker 1: new going on and like what is Jen sat looking
- 37:33Speaker 1: like this week? This month? What is Jen wearing? What's
- 37:38Speaker 1: the accessory? Like? How is she mixing it up? I
- 37:43Speaker 1: love watching it because truly like you're putting out some
- 37:47Speaker 1: top tier content. And um, I love too because that, like,
- 37:52Speaker 1: I think that there's plenty of people who would look
- 37:54Speaker 1: at you and be like, oh, Rihanna is Jen's fashion inspell,
- 37:58Speaker 1: which I totally can see that, right, But I love
- 38:01Speaker 1: that you were like, no, it's great, MoMA ladies in
- 38:05Speaker 1: the neighborhood. I was one tho percent expecting you to
- 38:08Speaker 1: say Rihanna as one of not the but one of
- 38:11Speaker 1: the insosed. I do love her though, you know, I
- 38:14Speaker 1: can't ignore it, but that is you know, oh my god.
- 38:17Speaker 1: I kind of like that that you'll think whenseration is
- 38:19Speaker 1: re re, which I feel like she inspires everybody, Like
- 38:22Speaker 1: at this point, it's like everybody's inspired by her, So
- 38:25Speaker 1: it's kind of like at a at a like on
- 38:27Speaker 1: subconscious level, you know, you're like, oh, because she already
- 38:31Speaker 1: has this like that you know what I'm saying, Yeah,
- 38:34Speaker 1: it's well trained is Yeah, she's got us and it's comfy.
- 38:39Speaker 1: It's comfy here. I like it here. So, Jen, what
- 38:45Speaker 1: are you working on next? So I'm currently y'all are
- 38:51Speaker 1: getting literally the first scoop of what I've been working on.
- 38:54Speaker 1: So I'm actually working on a brand, yeah, called from
- 38:58Speaker 1: the Yeah. So it's called from the Block, and From
- 39:01Speaker 1: the Block is going to be I'm really excited. I'm
- 39:04Speaker 1: also really nervous just because this is my first time
- 39:07Speaker 1: doing something like this, but I feel like I've always
- 39:10Speaker 1: wanted to have a brand of my own and just
- 39:14Speaker 1: see where it goes. You know, I'm super excited. So
- 39:18Speaker 1: From the Block is basically another you know, I'm going
- 39:20Speaker 1: to pay homage to my community and from literally the
- 39:23Speaker 1: block that I grew up in, which is three to
- 39:25Speaker 1: three Watts South Central, but also put a spin onto,
- 39:30Speaker 1: you know, the different identities of myself that I have
- 39:33Speaker 1: because I know it's a lot and I'm really excited
- 39:36Speaker 1: to share. I'm currently still working on the design. I
- 39:39Speaker 1: have my logo. My logo is super super cute and
- 39:43Speaker 1: hopefully all goal live by the end of the year.
- 39:46Speaker 1: You know, it takes time. It takes time, but I'm
- 39:49Speaker 1: actually very fortunate that I have an amazing team of
- 39:53Speaker 1: like videographers, DPS, photographers and model friends that are so
- 39:59Speaker 1: down and I'm very grateful and I'm and I think
- 40:01Speaker 1: that's what makes it so easy and so fun to
- 40:06Speaker 1: be a creative full time is by surrounding yourself with
- 40:09Speaker 1: people that are like that love you and also want
- 40:12Speaker 1: to create with you. And I'm very fortunate. And some
- 40:15Speaker 1: of those folks are Brandy Danny Encrypt Like I love
- 40:20Speaker 1: them so much and they literally helped me all the time.
- 40:23Speaker 1: So yeah, I'm excited. It's going to be a very
- 40:26Speaker 1: really big team effort. We'll see how it goes. I
- 40:30Speaker 1: kind of want to bring you on that an idea,
- 40:31Speaker 1: but it's just like like okay, like yeah, okay, Like
- 40:34Speaker 1: I'm a cancer girl. I love the moon, you know,
- 40:40Speaker 1: I like the moon. But these are clues? Are these
- 40:46Speaker 1: answer girl cancer icons? Moon? And that's all I'm going
- 40:51Speaker 1: to give. And I feel like I literally just gave
- 40:53Speaker 1: it all the way. But you know I'm not catching on,
- 40:57Speaker 1: But give me an hour and I'm sure something's going
- 41:00Speaker 1: to click for answer icons Moon? Got it? Okay? Okay, Hey, Yosa,
- 41:08Speaker 1: are you do you know what this is? Are you
- 41:11Speaker 1: catching on? I may be catching on that I don't
- 41:14Speaker 1: want to say because what if I'm wrong, And like
- 41:18Speaker 1: I'm not ready to say yes or no. But I'll
- 41:20Speaker 1: just give y'all like the you're not going to confirm
- 41:23Speaker 1: or deny, right, I'm like, it's a it's a lifestyle brand,
- 41:27Speaker 1: like like works. We can expect different pieces. Right now
- 41:32Speaker 1: it would be apparel apparel, and it would be and
- 41:36Speaker 1: then later on we'll see if you'll go into lifestyle.
- 41:39Speaker 1: But right now it's just a pail both because I
- 41:42Speaker 1: was thinking jewelry when she was like a cancer icon,
- 41:46Speaker 1: like a jewelry like that. Okay, but now write that down,
- 41:53Speaker 1: but now I'm not sure a cancer icon and a
- 41:58Speaker 1: moon and it's a okay call. But yeah, I'm going
- 42:03Speaker 1: to have to think about this. It's fine. That's good listeners.
- 42:09Speaker 1: If you guys can hazard a guess as to what
- 42:14Speaker 1: from the block what Jen is hinting at right now?
- 42:18Speaker 1: Leave a comment, leave a review, go is there you
- 42:21Speaker 1: have an Is there an Instagram account for? This? Is
- 42:24Speaker 1: an Instagram account but it's follow it's kind of private,
- 42:27Speaker 1: but like I'll still allow certain people to follow it.
- 42:31Speaker 1: You know, I can get this, I'll follow got it? Okay,
- 42:36Speaker 1: you heard it here first, y'all get it right you

- 42:48Speaker 1: you may or may not get access to if you
- 42:51Speaker 1: can solve this riddle. This is so exciting, how fine
- 42:54Speaker 1: the most guest has ever made us work. Let me
- 42:58Speaker 1: it's true. Kind I love it literally like this is
