Latest / The Gathering Line / Crude Plumbing: Bakken Bottlenecks and Guernsey Apportionment
Transcript
- 0:00Saturday, October tenth.
- 0:02Here's what moved since Friday's open, and what it means for Rockies and Bakken
- 0:05barrels.
- 0:07Global first.
- 0:08Brent settled Friday at a hundred and four dollars and seventy two cents,
- 0:12up forty four cents, or point four two percent, after trading lower earlier in the
- 0:16session.
- 0:17Reuters said the morning weakness came from President Trump calling Iran talks
- 0:21productive, pledging no strike before the November third midterms,
- 0:25and from reports that China will resume refined fuel exports after Golden Week.
- 0:30The recovery came from the Gulf.
- 0:32Iran's foreign minister, per Tasnim, said Tehran is reviewing the American response
- 0:37to a proposal that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days.
- 0:41That's a headline, not a deal.
- 0:43Washington also sanctioned individuals, networks and seventeen vessels carrying
- 0:47Iranian crude and products, and Houthi strikes across the Arabian Peninsula keep
- 0:52shipping risk alive.
- 0:53On the offset side, the G7 and I E A are pushing a hundred million barrels of
- 0:58emergency diesel and crude, though Reuters noted analysts and some governments don't
- 1:03read that as a fresh hundred million.
- 1:05OPEC plus has nothing new: November baselines unchanged, and the provisional hundred
- 1:10and eighty thousand barrel per day December increment is still tied to compensation
- 1:14cuts from Iraq and Kazakhstan.
- 1:16North America.
- 1:18Western Canadian Select for November delivery at Hardisty settled at twenty five
- 1:22dollars and fifty five cents under W T I, per CalRock.
- 1:25That's wider than Thursday's twenty twenty, more than ten dollars wider than this
- 1:29point last month, and the widest since twenty twenty three.
- 1:33Rory Johnston at Commodity Context blames a heavy fuel oil glut on the Gulf Coast
- 1:38and surging marine freight.
- 1:40On the plumbing, Canadian export lines are running near ninety three percent full,
- 1:44roughly three hundred fifty thousand barrels per day spare.
- 1:47Enbridge's Express into Casper is full at its two hundred eighty thousand barrel
- 1:51nameplate, and Trans Mountain sits near sixty percent.
- 1:55Winter diluent blending will tighten effective heavy capacity.
- 1:59Canadian rigs rose six to two hundred twenty two.
- 2:03Mexico: nothing material beyond the Financial Times report,
- 2:07relayed by Reuters, that Washington wants more cross border tie ups between energy
- 2:11companies.
- 2:12United States.
- 2:14W T I settled at ninety one eighty five, up thirty six cents.
- 2:18The Brent to W T I spread widened to twelve eighty seven from twelve sixty three
- 2:23Thursday, and a spread that wide pulls barrels toward Gulf Coast docks.
- 2:27Hurricane Isaias is the swing factor.
- 2:30Reuters, citing the Marine Minerals Administration, had about one point three
- 2:34million barrels per day, sixty two point nine percent of Gulf output,
- 2:38shut in as of Thursday.
- 2:40By Friday operators had shut in more than seventy percent.
- 2:44Baker Hughes, released Friday: the total rig count rose five to six hundred and
- 2:48three, the highest since May twenty twenty four, and fifty six above a year ago.
- 2:53Oil rigs gained six to four hundred sixty two, gas dropped one to a hundred thirty
- 2:58two, and the Permian added four to two hundred seventy four.
- 3:02I don't have a consensus figure, so I won't call it a surprise.
- 3:05Wednesday's E I A data is the baseline, not news.
- 3:08Commercial crude drew about three point two million barrels to four hundred twenty
- 3:12four point one million, against a Reuters poll expecting a one point seven million
- 3:16build.
- 3:17Cushing built four hundred forty thousand barrels to twenty four point seven
- 3:21million, still one point eight four million under the five year average.
- 3:25PADD two built one point eight seven two million on fall turnarounds,
- 3:29PADD four drew a hundred forty four thousand to twenty two point three five million,
- 3:33and utilization was ninety two point seven percent.
- 3:37On policy, Reuters reports three sources saying the administration will push use of
- 3:41the Defense Production Act to lift oil and fuel output.
- 3:44Details are thin.
- 3:46Uinta Basin.
- 3:47The railway has nothing new.
- 3:50The D.C.
- 3:50Circuit remanded the case to the Surface Transportation Board,
- 3:53which leaves the original approval in place.
- 3:56The supplemental environmental review and Forest Service permits are still pending,
- 4:01Senator Bennet and Representative Neguse still oppose it, the roughly two point two
- 4:05to two point five billion dollar financing isn't finalized,
- 4:09and construction hasn't started.
- 4:11Now the arithmetic that matters.
- 4:13Indicative yellow wax is ten to fourteen dollars under Cushing at the wellhead.
- 4:18Gulf Coast refiners are indicating about three twenty over W T I for waxy.
- 4:23Heated, insulated rail to the Gulf runs sixteen to eighteen dollars a barrel,
- 4:28so spot rail nets twelve eighty to fourteen eighty worse than selling locally.
- 4:33Rail stays limited to term commitments.
- 4:35Those are indications, not posted prices.
- 4:39Salt Lake's five refineries, about two hundred five thousand barrels per day of
- 4:42capacity, are taking roughly eighty thousand of waxy.
- 4:46Operators, Veren, Ovintiv, Scout, XCL, Berry, Caerus and SM,
- 4:51are in normal course development.
- 4:54Bakken.
- 4:55Williston crude is holding around one point nineteen to one point two million
- 4:59barrels per day, North Dakota near one point one four.
- 5:03Gas capture is ninety five point five percent despite a high gas oil ratio of three
- 5:08point oh nine M C F per barrel.
- 5:10Wells with three to four mile laterals are sixty three percent of recent
- 5:13completions.
- 5:14The big item is Hess Midstream and Chevron.
- 5:17Hess Midstream acquires Chevron's DJ Basin gathering and storage and a twenty
- 5:22percent Saddlehorn stake, and Chevron gives up its forty percent equity in Hess
- 5:26Midstream.
- 5:27For the Bakken, commercial agreements are extended through twenty forty five with
- 5:31lower fees, converted to fixed fees with an eighty percent minimum revenue
- 5:34commitment.
- 5:35Chevron also plans to drop from three rigs to two in December,
- 5:39which is projected to trim Hess Midstream Bakken throughput five percent in twenty
- 5:44twenty seven before volumes plateau in twenty twenty eight.
- 5:48Dakota Access is near capacity with little spot room south.
- 5:52Kinder Morgan's eighty eight thousand barrel Double H line is converting to N G L
- 5:56service, pushing crude toward Bridger's Belle Fourche system.
- 6:00Coastal rail at ten to fifteen dollars a barrel keeps spot rail out of the money.
- 6:05Powder River.
- 6:06Drilling and completions look steady across Anschutz, Continental,
- 6:10Devon, EOG and Peak.
- 6:12Gathering is feeding Bridger and Belle Fourche headers bound for Gernzee,
- 6:16and Plains continues folding the Silver Creek assets, a five hundred eighty five
- 6:20million dollar deal, into its Gernzee delivery terminals.
- 6:23Now Gernzee, which is the section that matters.
- 6:26Light sweet is holding at an indicative premium of about eighty five cents over
- 6:30Cushing, and Clearbrook trades one fifty to two ten under Gernzee.
- 6:34Both are steady over the last twenty four hours.
- 6:36The story is space, not price.
- 6:39Pony Express, about four hundred thirty thousand barrels per day as a system and
- 6:43roughly two hundred thirty thousand out of Gernzee, and Enbridge's Platte,
- 6:47a hundred forty five thousand to Wood River and Patoka, are both heavily
- 6:51apportioned.
- 6:52On the open season: Tallgrass and Bridger launched thirty day binding seasons on
- 6:56August twenty first for Pony Express and Seahorse out of Gernzee,
- 7:00offering incentive rates on existing capacity.
- 7:02This is not new pipe.
- 7:04No volumes, rates or term were disclosed, that window has closed,
- 7:08and I haven't seen results.
- 7:09So a shipper has three choices.
- 7:11Take proration on Pony or Platte and capture the twelve eighty seven Brent spread
- 7:15toward the Gulf, which still gives the best netback even with volume shaved.
- 7:20Sell east into Clearbrook at a dollar fifty to two ten under,
- 7:23into a PADD two market already carrying that one point eight seven million barrel
- 7:26turnaround build.
- 7:28Or rail to the coast at ten to fifteen dollars, which erases the arb.
- 7:32Allocation at Gernzee is the bottleneck.
- 7:34That's the tape.
- 7:36Watch Isaias and the Hormuz headlines Monday.
