Latest / Crafted Connections / EP 67: SOLO - Bring Back Slow Girl Summer
Transcript
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: Hello and welcome back to Crafted Connections.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: I am Kaitlin Calhoun, your host, your friend, here to talk about storytelling.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: And, you know, I think sometimes I worry that the perception of storytelling is, you know, we're in a story circle and we are telling stories of times before, right?
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: And in a way, that is a little bit what it is.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: But my approach to storytelling and my theories on storytelling is a little bit more about connection and human-to-human focused based story in the you know, storytelling circle creates that as well.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: But when I look at story and when I approach story, I'm thinking, how are we going to make a connection here?
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: And then the overarching approaches and intention is we tell a story, we share ourselves, we're vulnerable, we connect with people as a result, because people are like, what?
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Me too.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: And then from there, you know, a friendship develops.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: And then, you know, you do that with someone else and someone else, and then all of a sudden you got yourself a cozy community of supported, connected humans.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: And I think that is very, very important.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: I've got a background in video production, so I bring a visual storytelling element into it all as well.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: But I started this podcast with the idea of talking to the people that I know, sharing their stories, because I got so many cool people, and you can too.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: It's just about having a coffee chat, having a conversation, being curious.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: And that is what I am showing people how to do publicly, showing people how to how to tell their own stories.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: I'll I'll have solos where I'll jump on and kind of share my own thoughts and feelings about life and things and sharing and visibility.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: And today I'm going to throw us back a little bit to a solo that I produced this time last year called Slow Girl Summer.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Can you believe it?
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: It's been a slow girl year uh in some ways, and in other ways it has not.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: So I thought it would be really fun to replay this episode and kind of do a little bit of like a recap of my summer last year.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: So this episode is my most downloaded solo episode to date.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: It was something I needed at the time, and apparently my my peeps also needed it.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: So I'm going to replay last year's episode for you, and then after that, I'm going to dig into how I'm going to iterate on Slow Girl Summer of 2025.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: It's interesting to me because, you know, you set an intention.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: It's it's not about perfection going into it, but I set an intention to be a little bit more chill.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: And I I achieved that last year.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: And now I'm like looking at my summer coming up.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: We are a few days away from the summer solstice, and what can I do this summer?
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: What am I already doing for this summer to give myself this slow girl summer feeling?
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: So before I dig into that, please enjoy Slow Girl Summer, and then we'll dig into bring back Slow Girl Summer.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Today's episode is going to be a little bit of a intention setting sharing moment.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: A few weeks ago, I saw a LinkedIn connection of mine post something about Slow Girl Summer.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: She shared lots of like really beautiful photos and like kind of almost a visual gratitude journal, if you will, of what she was intending her summer to be and did the whole hashtag slow girl summer.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: And I know there's been a lot of people saying it's this girl summer or that girl summer.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: And that slow girl summer really resonated with me.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: And I'm really excited as we're approaching summer solstice to lean into that.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: And I wanted to publicly share and invite folks to do the same.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: I have an interesting relationship with summer.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: My birthday is in the summer.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: I love the sun.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: There's so many things about the summer that's warm and inviting and beautiful.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: I think I'd be hard-pressed to find someone who isn't passionate about, you know, days being longer and beautiful summer nights and things of that nature.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: And I had a lot of fun as a kid playing outside and playing sports and really just connecting with the outdoor spaces and planet Earth and all that jazz.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: So it's gotten complicated as I've gotten older.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: I have worked for myself for almost nine years now.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Before that, I was working really hard to build my career.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: Before that, I was at school and would kind of work really hard during the semesters and then crash in the summertime, almost in a like a catatonic state, if you will.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: So I've never really had like a beautifully balanced summer.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: It's either been working really hard or being an unconscious, like zombie of a human.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: And I'm trying to avoid that.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: I'm trying to, you know, turn over a new leaf.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: And I think I did a great job last year, but I didn't have the intention for it.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: Uh, and there are a lot of other mucky things going on in my life.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: So as I'm approaching the summer, I'm thinking a lot about how do I create a slow girl summer for myself?
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: How do I make sure that I am soaking it up without overdoing it?
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: You know, living my best life and also making sure that I'm like moving my goals forward and things of that nature.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: And I think when I hear the phrase and when I first came across the phrase slow girl summer, I realized it it's not about doing nothing.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: It's not about being a, you know, a vegetable burrito wrapped up, you know, on a holiday weekend.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: It's not about working 12-plus hour days on set, which I've spent summers doing or editing until the late night and then, you know, getting up even earlier to keep at the cut the next morning.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: For me, it is about approaching things with loving intention.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: For example, I have a few projects this summer that I'm really excited about.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: I've gotten to a place finally where these projects compensate me well enough.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: It's not about proving my worth or my skills anymore, but rather just leaning into my voice and leaning into creating as the creator that I am and using my fun, playful mind to make something cool.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: And I worked so hard to get here.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: And now that I'm here, I'm not gonna lie, it's a little bit intimidating.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: It's, you know, like people want to collaborate with me.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: They want to know, you know, my take on the thing.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: They want me to approach, you know, the the edit or or direct the piece with my creative spin, with my creative voice.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: And while I am so excited, there's a real fear that, you know, working so hard to the point that like you get there and then you're like, wait, but is it good enough?
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: Is it good enough?
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: Did I work hard to get here for nothing?
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: And in that, I want to take these opportunities I have ahead of me in the next few months to really create beautiful things.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: And not from a place of overworking, but you guessed it, right back to that slow girl summer.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: It's almost like a savory summer.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: I love the metaphor of when you're making a soup, you're creating the aromatics, which is like the garlic, the onion, you know, maybe the celery and carrots.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: You you like saute those first before you put in the broth and the meat or the you know, the tofu or whatever, whatever your dietary needs are.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: So the aromatics, they need time to one, fill your kitchen up with delicious smells, but two, like to soften and to to get themselves to the point where they're their top quality flavor.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: And that's slow girl summer.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: It's juicy, it's flavorful, it's intentional, and I am so dang excited.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: I am so dang excited.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: And so what does that entail?
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: Like, how do I how do I do that in practice, right?
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: We've got the metaphor, we've got the projects on the docket.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: Things are covered, right?
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: Things are covered.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: So how do we make sure that like that muscle of like, I gotta work 12 hours today, or I'm gonna crash because I've done six to 10 days in a row of like 12 plus hour days or 14 plus hour days or whatever hustle brag we wanna lean into, or that I have the habit of leaning into where it's like, well, I worked this much, well, I worked this much, but it's not no, no, no.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: So all to say, how do we actually do this in practice?
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: In the case of my projects, I am trying to remind myself on a regular basis that being stressed about the project 24-7 does not mean that I get a better product.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: I think I've fallen into the trap of if I obsess over this project, if I say mean things to myself, if I push, push, push, push, push, then a better result will come from that.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: The more intense I am about something, the better the product.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: While I never was like aware that this was a story, it was absolutely a story for me.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: For example, back in high school, I could never see past my Latin tests.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: People would be like, hey, do you want to go get ice cream tonight?
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: I'd be like, sorry, I have to study for my Latin test next week.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: Hey, how's this going in your life?
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: Sorry, no, I can't even think about that.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: My Latin test is next week.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: And I've carried that into my adulthood.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: Hey, do you want to go to a festival this weekend?
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: Sorry, no, I've got a project due in a month.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: So this 15 plus year pattern of putting off what I maybe wanted to do because of what I thought I had to do in order to yield a better result continued and I kept reinforcing it.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: So this summer I'm really excited to kind of break that.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: And in the practice of just because I have a project on my plate doesn't mean I can't go, you know, take a walk in the afternoon or step away or make a new friend, go out with my partner for a date night, things like that.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: Taking time away from my passions, read obsessions, and that brings me to another thing I really want to be clear about this summer is spending time taking care of my whole being.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: That is going on walks, that is finding hobbies.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: I historically have not been great at hobbies because I don't like trying things that I'm not good at.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: Who does?
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: Beginner's mind is a concept that is easily talked about, but not so easily embodied.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: So trying new things, learning new things.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: We've lived on our boat for a whole summer, we're back on it this summer.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: We've still got a lot to learn.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: We're newbies.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: Some might say dumbasses for trying this whole new thing, whole new lifestyle change, but here we are.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: We're in it, we're over a year into it, and we've still got a lot to learn.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: And so giving some love to that to really pour into every element of my life.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: It's not just about checking things off in order to say that I did the thing or to feel some sort of like checklist validation, but rather like, what's just a fun thing?
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: I got a little bit into coloring this winter.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: Not a lot, but a little bit.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: Every once in a while I'd bring out a coloring book and I would color.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: And something about it was just really nourishing, just filling in some blanks.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: And it wasn't about trying to fill it in as fast as possible.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: I think I spent three to four weeks on one color sheet.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: And then when I was done, it it looked cute and that was exciting.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: And I plan on sending it to a friend and spreading that joy.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: But the intention wasn't to get it done so I can send it to a friend so I can do another one and send it to another friend and do another one and send it to another friend, which has been a pattern for me.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: So if you can feel it, that's how we go back to slow girl summer.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: It's not a do this to do this to do that to get this.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: It's not a conditional, if I do this, then this happens.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: It's a what do I want to do right now?
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: What do I want to nourish myself with?
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: What do I want to pour myself into?
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: And where do we go from there?
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: So I invite you from here.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: What does slow girl summer mean to you?
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: How do you want to define it?
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: This is an evolving thing.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: I'm just sharing an intention.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: There's definitely a world when, you know, fall comes around where I revisit this episode and I kind of do a slow girl summer recap for you all.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: Because slow girl summer is not a like flip a switch and now I'm in slow girl summer.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: It is a work in progress moment.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: It is a, like I said many a times, intention.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: I wrote something in my journal the other day about this because I've been thinking a lot about this episode.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: This is very much a riffing episode.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: And uh let me flip to the page and find it real quick.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: I wrote this.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: Intentional because I'm doing things with purpose, passion, and reasoning behind them.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: Aspirational because I'm in process, getting caught up and sometimes worked up by busyness.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: And that's okay.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: That is okay.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: So, with that all being said, I hope you find your version of this, or I hope you find and set the intention for the summer that you want to have.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: It's upon us, and it will be gone before you know it.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: Before you know it, you'll be listening to the slow girl summer recap.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: And I cannot wait to share it with you because I know it's gonna be a juicy, nourishing summer.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: You know that feeling at the start of the month where you want to hit the ground running, but somehow the first week slips by and before you know it, we're on to the next month.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: This is exactly why I host the Community Coworking Monthly Kickoff on the first business day of every month.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: We come together on Zoom for two hours to reflect on what just happened, set real intentions for what's ahead, and actually work on something that matters together.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: It's part grounding ritual, part focus working session, and part community check-in.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: And it's completely free.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: Here's how it flows.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: We start with 30 minutes of intention setting, looking back on the month behind you, getting honest what you want to carry into the next one, then we drop into 60 minutes of quiet focus co-working.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: Heads down, no pressure, just you and your work.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: We wrap up with 30 minutes of sharing, celebrating wins, naming goals out loud, and connecting with people who actually get it.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: It's community building.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: And it doesn't end when the call does.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: Everyone who joins gets access to an accountability WhatsApp group to keep the momentum going all month long.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: If you've been craving a little structure, a little community, or just a reason to start the month with intention instead of inertia, this is it.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: It's free, it's monthly, and it might just become your favorite monthly ritual.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: Link to sign up is in the show notes, and I hope to see you there.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: Hey there.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: It's 2026 Caitlin again.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: And dang, I I loved re-listening to uh me setting the intention for Slow Girl Summer last year.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: And I think the biggest thing that stands out as I dig into how do I approach summer 2026 with the same philosophy is the intentional and aspirational.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: And I love that idea because just like you know, you set goals versus intentions, intentions give us so much space for room to improve on and to iterate and to change our flippin' minds, right?
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: Same thing with aspirational, you know, you it is aspirations are intentions, right?
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: You're you're aspiring to do that thing, and it's okay if you don't necessarily hit it because the point is not to beat yourself up.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: And I look at 2025 summer and it wasn't maybe as slow as the Caitlin from that episode was hoping it would be, and also it was much, much better than summer of 2024, and a hella lot better than summer of 2023.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: So maybe it's a little bit more about iteration.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: The cool thing about like revisiting an intention from before is seeing like, oh no, you're getting better.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: You are, and you get to be gentle about that.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: And I'm proud of what I did last summer.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: I'm proud of the the projects, and I do think I did a great job.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: I have some memories of myself drinking coffee on the back deck of our boat and the very slow morning that that was, and and the way that I uh the way I do my work now is much more gentle.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: I used to wake up, like if I was feeling intense about a project, I would get up at four just to like make sure it was done by 8 a.m.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: for my client.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: And now I I still get the projects done, but I'm not gonna hurt myself in the process.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: And I really like I just can't, like, I'm just not that person anymore.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: I don't identify with that anymore, and it has taken time, right?
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: So with that, yes, I'm seeing I'm seeing how my life gets to be about iteration, and I look at the slow girl summer idea, and I'm looking at 2026 and I'm feeling really fresh and excited because I've made a lot of changes in the last 12 months to cultivate an even slower, more gentle, more creative summer for myself than last year.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: And a few things I'm doing to implement this, but then going back to it's not conditional, so it's not like a you have to, you have to, you have to, but it is like a here are some gentle parameters, bumpers to kind of like give myself the space to have a slow girl summer.
- 17:27SPEAKER_00: I am considering the return on investment of my time with everything.
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: So when I am doing something, I'm considering what is the ROI in this situation, and not in a what is the return on investment in regards to financials only, but rather like the amount of joy it's gonna bring me, what it's gonna do for the family unit Phil and I are building, what is the return on investment in relation to some of our like shorter long-term goals, really thinking about that.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: And then also checking in with my gut.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: Like, what does my gut say about like, is this going to yield or grow what I want it to grow?
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: I'm also getting better at receiving support.
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: This is in so many, so many ways.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, maybe it is a little bit financially.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: Like I've got I've got some some colleagues that have hired me for things and like they are offering me better rates than I'm offering for myself.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: So it's like, girl, one, you know, work on those, that mindset, that rate stuff.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: But then also when somebody offers you something, receive it.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: And and I don't want to just go financially with this because it is also Phil and I are working on improving the boat.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: We we've got some construction projects on the boat, and former versions of myself would jump in front of him and try and do the projects.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: But I'm just letting that man handle it, right?
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: I'm stepping the F back because I don't need to do everything.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: Like one person does not a relationship make.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: And so I'm receiving a lot more from Phil, my friends.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: I am one of those people that like I will hold the space and I will listen to everything you need to share and say.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: It is very hard for me when I'm in an emotional place to share that with my friends.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: And I've got a few friends that I'm like more and more being like, you know what?
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: You trust them, your feelings kind of way about this one particular topic.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: It's okay to send a voice note.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: And gosh, that like the support I get back is just it's amazing.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: But I was not ready a year ago, two years ago, definitely not three years ago, to to be vulnerable and then receive advice, encouragement back in a way that is like cultivating the life I want now.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: Finally, I'm letting myself get lost in the project in front of me, just lost, like let it rip.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: Freaking love it.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: And I spoke about this in in my last solo episode two weeks ago about hot dang.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: When you actually let your creativity run wild, when you actually give it what you have and let the rest fall into place, and don't spend all your energy worrying about if it will fall into place, it's never gone wrong for me in that way.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: Like the times where my projects have not worked out is when I is when I spend all this time worrying and don't actually spend time on the actual like creative movement momentum forward.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: And so I'm doing that.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm giving myself a lot of love in that and and space and even, you know, especially in client work, trusting that my collaborators trust my process.
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: And so, in a way, Slow Girl Summer is also a creative project for me, and I'm going to focus on giving to it.
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: There are a few things I even I wrote a list to talk to you all about of things that I'm anxious about and things that are better, and you know, it's like a whole freaking list of like but I'm I'm realizing now that it's like that's exactly what I don't want to do.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: That's why I have these tools of considering the ROI, receiving support, and letting it rip with my creativity.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: So those tools, living into them, living into the momentum, giving gentle, easy, slow girl summer a run for her money, I'm ready.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: It makes me very, very excited about the future and what's to come.
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: I know it was a beautiful thing and a good intention that gave me a beautiful summer of 2025.
- 21:33SPEAKER_00: And the same is happening now.
- 21:36SPEAKER_00: So let's go, team.
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: Please, uh, if this resonated with you, please share with your people and let me know how you are ensuring a slow girl summer for yourself.
- 21:49SPEAKER_00: Let me know how you're loving on yourself, living in your creativity, how it's gone.
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: If you listened to last year's episode and then set the intention and then are looking towards this summer, I'd be very curious to know how it went for you.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: So grateful you're here.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: Share with your friends.
