Latest / Foul Territory / Fair Territory: Can LA Force Game 7? Blue Jays 1 Win from World Series Title + New Manager Moves
Transcript
- 0:10Speaker 1: Welcome everyone to a special Friday edition of Fair Territory,
- 0:14Speaker 1: a special Halloween edition of Fair Territory, and most importantly,
- 0:18Speaker 1: the Game six World Series Edition of Fair Territory. I'm
- 0:21Speaker 1: Ken Rosenthal here with my friend Alana Rizzo. We are
- 0:24Speaker 1: going to talk all things World Series and get into
- 0:27Speaker 1: some other things as well. Alana, good afternoon.
- 0:29Speaker 2: How are you good afternoon? Always good to be with
- 0:32Speaker 2: you on this Friday. Ken, is your schedule is bananas
- 0:35Speaker 2: because of the World Series. But let's talk about Game six.
- 0:40Speaker 2: If you're gonna have a guy on the hill, Ken
- 0:42Speaker 2: for the Dodgers, you want it to be Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Absolutely, and back to back complete games in the postseason,
- 0:49Speaker 1: something that has not been done since Kurt Shilling for
- 0:51Speaker 1: the Diamondbacks in two thousand and one. He threw three straight. Obviously,
- 0:56Speaker 1: the Dodgers need him to be really good. Again, this
- 0:58Speaker 1: is an elimination game. This is it. But the other
- 1:01Speaker 1: part of this is, even if you can count on
- 1:04Speaker 1: Yamamoto to be really good, I don't know that you
- 1:06Speaker 1: can count on him to pitch a complete game. That's
- 1:08Speaker 1: a lot to ask. And then you have the bull
- 1:10Speaker 1: coming into play and most important you have their offense
- 1:14Speaker 1: coming into play, and that's been the concern here. And
- 1:16Speaker 1: it's interesting, Alana. You know this because you follow the
- 1:19Speaker 1: Dodgers so closely. Their offense has been in and out
- 1:22Speaker 1: all season and right now it's out again. They need
- 1:25Speaker 1: to find it somehow. And granted they're facing great pitching.
- 1:28Speaker 1: You Savage was brilliant in Game five, but here they
- 1:32Speaker 1: are against Kevin Gossman. Tonight, Dave Roberts hinted at additional
- 1:35Speaker 1: lineup changes. We'll see what happens. They drop Mooky to
- 1:38Speaker 1: the third spot, move Will Smith up to the second spot.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Bench pahes for ours call. There's not much more they
- 1:44Speaker 1: can do.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Honestly, you know what can we keep saying? What is
- 1:48Speaker 2: wrong with the Dodgers? Obviously they come into this World
- 1:51Speaker 2: Series as the favorites, of course, or the reigning World
- 1:53Speaker 2: Series champions, But perhaps we should be asking are the
- 1:57Speaker 2: Toronto Blue Jays the better team?
- 2:00Speaker 1: That's a fair question based on the way these teams
- 2:02Speaker 1: have played now over one hundred and sixty two, they
- 2:04Speaker 1: actually were better. They had ninety four wins, the Dodgers
- 2:07Speaker 1: had ninety three. And when you watch these teams play
- 2:11Speaker 1: against each other, you notice differences. The Blue Jays offense
- 2:15Speaker 1: certainly has not had a problem. They are a team
- 2:18Speaker 1: that attacks early in the count and they are a
- 2:20Speaker 1: team that puts the ball in play, doesn't strike out much.
- 2:22Speaker 1: We've been through all of this already and it's been
- 2:25Speaker 1: very effective for them, even against better pitching in the postseason. Defensively,
- 2:30Speaker 1: there also is a difference, and as I wrote yesterday,
- 2:32Speaker 1: that play in right field, that the one the triple
- 2:35Speaker 1: that got past Teo by Dalton Barsio and the diving
- 2:38Speaker 1: catch Barger made on Otani on a one hundred and
- 2:40Speaker 1: seventeen mile per hour shot kind of illustrated the differences
- 2:44Speaker 1: between these teams. Defensively, the Dodgers are not as good defensively.
- 2:48Speaker 1: They had three wild pitches in that inning as well,
- 2:51Speaker 1: that four to run seven. So there's some things going
- 2:54Speaker 1: on here. I knew this was gonna happen, And obviously
- 2:59Speaker 1: with a they need to play better. They need to
- 3:02Speaker 1: get their bullpen if they have to use it into
- 3:05Speaker 1: an effective mode, and it's been a problem for them,
- 3:08Speaker 1: there's no question about it.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Yeah can so maybe it's not what is wrong with
- 3:11Speaker 2: the Dodgers, Perhaps it's what is right with the Blue
- 3:14Speaker 2: Jays as Alar eleven twenty nine brings up so well
- 3:17Speaker 2: in our chat by the way, you guys get your
- 3:19Speaker 2: questions in for Grill and Ken. You know, one thing
- 3:22Speaker 2: can besides the Dodgers being the heavy favorites coming into
- 3:25Speaker 2: the series is everything we talked about it on our
- 3:28Speaker 2: production call, right, So if we said apples to apples,
- 3:31Speaker 2: the teams are the same. The one thing that was
- 3:33Speaker 2: different was the experienced level of the Dodgers over the
- 3:36Speaker 2: Blue Jays, and not just with the roster, Ken, but
- 3:39Speaker 2: with the managers. Dave Roberts has been there, done that.
- 3:42Speaker 2: John Schneider kind of learning on the fly but doing
- 3:44Speaker 2: a very effective job. It doesn't seem like John Schneider
- 3:48Speaker 2: is it's the moment's not too big for him.
- 3:53Speaker 1: No, it hasn't been end up. By the way, our
- 3:55Speaker 1: producer Mark Wiener said that that's the Dodgers' offense calling.
- 3:58Speaker 1: They're probably going to call again. But regardless, the managerial
- 4:02Speaker 1: thing is always interesting in the postseason because every decision
- 4:05Speaker 1: is under such scrutiny. And John Schneider had a moment
- 4:09Speaker 1: in Game five of the ALSS where he did not
- 4:12Speaker 1: go to Jeff Hoffman for cal Rawley. He instead went
- 4:15Speaker 1: with Brendan Little, and we'll know what happened. Raley hit
- 4:18Speaker 1: the tying homer and then they got the big homer
- 4:20Speaker 1: from Suarez and the series came back to Toronto with the
- 4:23Speaker 1: Blue Jays down three games to two. That was a moment,
- 4:27Speaker 1: like the moment with Barrios a few years back, that
- 4:30Speaker 1: I think John Schneider learned from, and he has talked
- 4:32Speaker 1: about reading situations and reacting and learning on the fly.
- 4:36Speaker 1: If you remember the Barrios moment that was scripted right
- 4:39Speaker 1: they pulled him, I think it was after three and
- 4:41Speaker 1: or the start of the fourth, and it was no good.
- 4:45Speaker 1: He was pitching well. It was a silly thing to do,
- 4:48Speaker 1: and the front office was involved with that. Schneider took
- 4:50Speaker 1: the hit. We all know what happened. Since then, Schneider
- 4:54Speaker 1: has evolved and he is taking greater control. He has
- 4:57Speaker 1: gained more confidence in his decision making and we've seen
- 5:00Speaker 1: that throughout the postseason. Now each manager, every manager in
- 5:05Speaker 1: the postseason is still going to do things you question,
- 5:08Speaker 1: but they always have their reasons. Sometimes these things work out,
- 5:11Speaker 1: sometimes they don't. It's always outcome based. So yes, he
- 5:15Speaker 1: has done well and It's interesting too, Dave Roberts, a
- 5:19Speaker 1: guy that before last year was really questioned for a
- 5:23Speaker 1: number of his decisions in various postseasons. This isn't on him,
- 5:28Speaker 1: if you ask me. This is on a team that
- 5:31Speaker 1: just is not performing the way it should and that
- 5:34Speaker 1: is going to be the key question here. Can the
- 5:37Speaker 1: Dodgers show the resilience they showed last year when they
- 5:40Speaker 1: were down two to one in the Division Series against
- 5:43Speaker 1: the Padres in San Diego, throwing a bullpen game with
- 5:47Speaker 1: everything against them? Can this Dodgers team rise up the
- 5:50Speaker 1: way that one did? And this team you could certainly
- 5:53Speaker 1: say is more talented than that one was. I don't
- 5:56Speaker 1: know that they're a better team, though, and that's the
- 5:59Speaker 1: question that face here.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Ken, Before we move on to the managerial moves in
- 6:03Speaker 2: Major League Baseball, have two more questions for your regarding this.
- 6:07Speaker 2: You talked about the team being perhaps more talented this year,
- 6:10Speaker 2: but Ken, they're also aging. Are we not talking about
- 6:12Speaker 2: that enough?
- 6:14Speaker 1: Well? I mentioned it in my column yesterday, and win
- 6:16Speaker 1: or lose this is going to be an issue for
- 6:18Speaker 1: the Dodgers. I'm sorry. Freddie Freeman thirty six, Tao Mookie
- 6:22Speaker 1: thirty three, you've got other players too. Max Muntzy's thirty
- 6:26Speaker 1: five not catastrophic by any of the any means, and
- 6:30Speaker 1: certainly Freddy, while not as productive maybe as he was
- 6:33Speaker 1: in his prime, is still a highly productive player. But
- 6:36Speaker 1: it is a question that they're going to face and
- 6:38Speaker 1: as they go to the off season again, no matter
- 6:41Speaker 1: what happens here, it's got to be a concern, and
- 6:43Speaker 1: it's got to be a concern not just because of
- 6:46Speaker 1: the small sample size we're seeing in this World Series,
- 6:48Speaker 1: because of what we've seen since the Wildcard round. Their
- 6:52Speaker 1: offensive numbers since the Wildcard round as a team are terrible,
- 6:55Speaker 1: and what we've seen Alana as we discussed, how they've
- 6:58Speaker 1: gone in and out all year offensively. So while they
- 7:02Speaker 1: finished second in the majors in run scored, they often
- 7:05Speaker 1: didn't look like that kind of team. And that's something that, yes,
- 7:08Speaker 1: the Dodgers are going to have at least examine. I
- 7:12Speaker 1: don't know how you address it. Maybe you sign Kyle Tucker.
- 7:15Speaker 1: That's one answer. He's only going to be twenty nine
- 7:17Speaker 1: next year, but it's something that going forward could be
- 7:20Speaker 1: an issue for them.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Before we move on Ken, how much is the Alex
- 7:25Speaker 2: VESSI a factor impacting this team.
- 7:28Speaker 1: It's a factor, no question, and they miss him. And
- 7:31Speaker 1: of course, if you don't know, he is out with
- 7:33Speaker 1: a family emergency, and he was off the roster for
- 7:36Speaker 1: this series. But the bullpen has been vexing them really
- 7:39Speaker 1: all season. And in this series we don't have Tanner,
- 7:43Speaker 1: Scott and Kirby Yates on the roster. They're off the
- 7:46Speaker 1: roster making combined eighty five million in total guarantees. That's
- 7:50Speaker 1: a problem. They've had Blake trying to not be the
- 7:54Speaker 1: same this year, coming off a postseason last year in
- 7:57Speaker 1: which he was brilliant but worked really hard. They lost
- 7:59Speaker 1: Evan Phillips to Tommy John surgery, and then they traded
- 8:02Speaker 1: for one reliever at the deadline blockstro got after four appearances.
- 8:07Speaker 1: So their bullpen remains an issue. They've had Saki emerge
- 8:11Speaker 1: and that's been great obviously and necessary, but the bullpen, yes,
- 8:16Speaker 1: has been a problem area.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Yeah, Sasaki has kind of been non existent in the
- 8:20Speaker 2: World Series as well. All right, let's move on our
- 8:23Speaker 2: focus here on Fair Territory with Ken Rosenthal. There have
- 8:26Speaker 2: been some managerial postings Ken, and there are still three
- 8:29Speaker 2: teams that need a skipper. Let's start with the Washington Nationals.
- 8:33Speaker 2: They hired Blake Uta, a thirty three year old, as
- 8:37Speaker 2: their newest manager. What do you know about him?
- 8:39Speaker 1: I don't know much about him. I don't know that
- 8:41Speaker 1: anyone does. And he was a thirty fifth round pick
- 8:43Speaker 1: by Tampa Bay in twenty fifteen. He was the youngest
- 8:46Speaker 1: manager in the Miners twenty eighteen, and then became the
- 8:49Speaker 1: Race senior director of player development in twenty twenty three.
- 8:53Speaker 1: He's obviously a guy who is extremely well thought of
- 8:56Speaker 1: by the Rays and by the rest of the industry.
- 8:58Speaker 1: The Nationals new head of baseball operations, Paul Deboni, came
- 9:01Speaker 1: from the Red Sox and he knew about Blake but Terra,
- 9:04Speaker 1: so this is why they went in that direction. And
- 9:08Speaker 1: then we've had also the hiring of Tony Vitello in
- 9:12Speaker 1: San Francisco from college. That's a rarity in baseball. This
- 9:16Speaker 1: guy is a rarity in baseball. My phone is ringing again.
- 9:19Speaker 1: And the one point I want to make here, Derek
- 9:23Speaker 1: Shelton by the Twins. That was more of a traditional hire,
- 9:25Speaker 1: right Derek Shelton had managed Pittsburgh, he figured he would
- 9:28Speaker 1: get another chance. I'm not sure the teams here are
- 9:34Speaker 1: not getting too cute, and we'll see this all plays out.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Maybe Tony Vitello is great, maybe Blake but Terra is great.
- 9:41Speaker 1: But I just wonder with Danny Lehman, the Dodgers bench coach,
- 9:45Speaker 1: getting a lot of play with the Braves too, he
- 9:47Speaker 1: seemingly could be a front runner for that job. What
- 9:50Speaker 1: are we doing here. Brandon Hyde, who was a very
- 9:53Speaker 1: successful manager with Baltimore, is sitting out there and seemingly
- 9:56Speaker 1: not getting a shot. David Ross pretty successful with her,
- 10:00Speaker 1: certainly like Hyde deserving of another chance, and hey, he's
- 10:05Speaker 1: not getting a chance. So these teams are coming up
- 10:08Speaker 1: with these fancy ideas and everybody's trying to reinvent the wheel. Fine,
- 10:11Speaker 1: if it works, great, But at the same time, I
- 10:14Speaker 1: always wonder with baseball now if teams do try to
- 10:17Speaker 1: get too cute, and they do it in other areas
- 10:19Speaker 1: besides this one. We'll see how this all plays out
- 10:21Speaker 1: for all of these guys.
- 10:23Speaker 2: You mentioned Derek Shelton going now to the Twins, and
- 10:25Speaker 2: no disrespect to either guy, but ken is Derek Shelton
- 10:28Speaker 2: Rocobaldelli two point zero? How do they differ?
- 10:32Speaker 1: I don't know, And certainly Shelton did not have success
- 10:35Speaker 1: in Pittsburgh. That goes beyond him, obviously, it goes to
- 10:39Speaker 1: the owner, it goes to the general mager. You see
- 10:41Speaker 1: his record there. I don't know that you can put
- 10:43Speaker 1: much on this on him at all for that. But
- 10:46Speaker 1: at the same time, the twins are a team that
- 10:49Speaker 1: you would think maybe would take a different tactic, or
- 10:53Speaker 1: maybe woulds hire a Brandon Hide or David Ross, and
- 10:56Speaker 1: yet they're going to a guy that they're real familiar with.
- 10:59Speaker 1: He used to be in the organ and maybe that's
- 11:01Speaker 1: the key here. But if you're asking how much different
- 11:04Speaker 1: is he than Rockeballdellhi, we're going to find out. I
- 11:06Speaker 1: can't imagine he's much different. But I always do like managers,
- 11:11Speaker 1: not all of them, but a lot of them who
- 11:13Speaker 1: get second chances because they learn in the first job
- 11:16Speaker 1: things that they didn't really know, didn't really understand, and
- 11:19Speaker 1: they get a better grasp of for the second job.
- 11:22Speaker 1: That's why I think Hyde and Ross are worthy of
- 11:25Speaker 1: another look, because they would be better in many ways
- 11:29Speaker 1: this time around than they were the last time.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Well, they certainly have more experience. And even when I
- 11:33Speaker 2: saw but Terra's name and congratulations to Blake I thought
- 11:36Speaker 2: it was Drew. I knew nothing about Blake Terra, so
- 11:38Speaker 2: it's interesting to see how that's all going to pan
- 11:40Speaker 2: out for the Washington Nationals. All right, get those questions
- 11:42Speaker 2: in for Grill and Ken. He has an opportunity to
- 11:45Speaker 2: answer answer the call if you will. Haha, you see
- 11:48Speaker 2: what I did there. We'll be back after this. A
- 11:51Speaker 2: few words from our friends at foul Territory.
- 11:54Speaker 3: Let's take you through the Arena Club slab pack experience.
- 11:57Speaker 3: This is part two because Todd Father last week he
- 12:00Speaker 3: pulled a card that he didn't love, yet he sold
- 12:03Speaker 3: it back for actually more than what the slab pack cost.
- 12:07Speaker 3: This time pulls a card that he likes.
- 12:09Speaker 4: Yeah, and this is the best part of it. Ronnie Mauricio,
- 12:12Speaker 4: the Mets stand out, you know, rookie sensation. He's been
- 12:15Speaker 4: absolutely phenomenal. I like the itch of seeing what you're
- 12:18Speaker 4: gonna get, you know, I like prospects. I don't love him,
- 12:22Speaker 4: but seeing this kind of card is actually absolutely beautiful thing.
- 12:25Speaker 4: I know a couple of people around town that would
- 12:27Speaker 4: absolutely love that card. So there's gonna be a lot
- 12:29Speaker 4: of conversations going on here for Arena Club.
- 12:31Speaker 3: And what you do is you have it in your
- 12:32Speaker 3: digital showroom. If you want to hand it out locally,
- 12:35Speaker 3: then cool. You ask Arena Club to send it to
- 12:38Speaker 3: you and they do. Or you can sell it back
- 12:40Speaker 3: like you see there instant offer for one hundred ninety
- 12:43Speaker 3: three bucks. But he's keeping it and you can do
- 12:45Speaker 3: what toddfather does by going to Arena club dot com
- 12:48Speaker 3: slash foul and getting twenty percent off your first card
- 12:50Speaker 3: purchase or your first slab pack purchase.
- 13:00Speaker 2: All right, it is time now for Grill and Ken.
- 13:02Speaker 2: We're going to get those questions in from the YouTube chat.
- 13:05Speaker 2: The first one is from armand is amazing. Always good
- 13:09Speaker 2: to have him. He's a big contributor here on fair territory. Ken,
- 13:12Speaker 2: who are the front runners for the three remaining managerial
- 13:16Speaker 2: job open England? For those that don't know, it's who
- 13:18Speaker 2: is it? Ken? It's the Rockies, the Padres and the Braves.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Correct, that's right? That is right? A lot and front runners.
- 13:26Speaker 1: It's always tricky because you don't know exactly what's going on.
- 13:29Speaker 1: And I'll start with the Braves in this regard. It's
- 13:31Speaker 1: been reported that Danny Lehman, the Dodgers bench coach, is
- 13:35Speaker 1: a leading name for the Braves, if not the front
- 13:37Speaker 1: runner Alexanthopolis. The head of baseball operations generally operates under
- 13:43Speaker 1: the radar, So when a name gets out with him
- 13:45Speaker 1: regarding a free agent, a trade, or now a managerial hiring,
- 13:49Speaker 1: I'm always skeptical that that is actually the name that's
- 13:52Speaker 1: going to be there. But they have not made a hire,
- 13:55Speaker 1: and maybe they are waiting for the Dodgers to complete
- 13:58Speaker 1: the World Series and then they will go and act
- 14:00Speaker 1: from there. In San Diego, it seems to be Albert
- 14:03Speaker 1: Pouoholes or they're pitching coach Ruben Diebla. Those are the
- 14:05Speaker 1: two names you're hearing most prominently. And in Colorado, we
- 14:08Speaker 1: don't know, because Colorado has not hired a head of
- 14:11Speaker 1: baseball operations yet. That should be coming any day now.
- 14:15Speaker 1: We've reported at The Athletic that the finalists are Diamondback's
- 14:19Speaker 1: assistant GM Amaniel Saude and Cleveland Guardian's assistant GM Matt Foreman.
- 14:24Speaker 1: Once that is resolved, once they hire one of those guys,
- 14:27Speaker 1: that person will then pick the manager. So we seemingly
- 14:31Speaker 1: have some idea, but I don't know that we really
- 14:34Speaker 1: have a total idea on any of them. San Diego
- 14:37Speaker 1: seems to be one of those two guys that I mentioned,
- 14:39Speaker 1: but the others I'm not so sure.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Ken, out of the three remaining openings, what is the
- 14:44Speaker 2: one that should be most coveted. What's the most attractive one?
- 14:48Speaker 1: Braves and Padres are both attractive, but the Braves is
- 14:51Speaker 1: a little bit more attractive to me because it seems
- 14:55Speaker 1: to me that they're going to have a much better
- 14:57Speaker 1: year they had it pretty much everything that could go
- 14:58Speaker 1: wrong go wrong for them. Anthopolis is not accustomed to
- 15:03Speaker 1: having a lack of success, and he's going to be
- 15:05Speaker 1: hell bent on making the team better. And it just
- 15:08Speaker 1: seems that their roster is really good. Akhun, you will
- 15:11Speaker 1: be back. All these things will happen for them. Listen,
- 15:14Speaker 1: san Diego's roster is awfully good as well. But they've
- 15:16Speaker 1: got a couple of starting pitchers in free agency here,
- 15:19Speaker 1: Dylan Cease and Michael King. They've got to redo that
- 15:22Speaker 1: there are payroll questions. It's not quite as attractive as
- 15:26Speaker 1: the bravest job in my opinion anyway.
- 15:29Speaker 2: All right, next question comes from ev Underscore Warrior Ken.
- 15:32Speaker 2: If we go to Game seven, should show Hey, oh
- 15:35Speaker 2: we're gonna well go go back to the one on
- 15:37Speaker 2: the screen, should show Hey o Tawani start. If it
- 15:39Speaker 2: goes to game seven, should show Hey start.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Well, that's going to be a question that's going to
- 15:44Speaker 1: come up. And the reason he would start the game
- 15:47Speaker 1: is because when you look at where the Dodgers are
- 15:50Speaker 1: and where he is, he will be available for an
- 15:54Speaker 1: inning or two. He would almost have to be an opener.
- 15:57Speaker 1: So if you're going to use him, you might as
- 15:59Speaker 1: well use him as the art of the game when
- 16:00Speaker 1: you can keep him in as the DH. If you
- 16:02Speaker 1: use him at the end of the game, then you've
- 16:04Speaker 1: got to put him in the outfield, and that becomes
- 16:06Speaker 1: something he hasn't done, and it's a little bit more problematic.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Now I can see show Hey knowing what little we
- 16:12Speaker 1: do about him. I can see him wanting to close
- 16:15Speaker 1: out the World Series the way he closed out the
- 16:17Speaker 1: WBS thing. But it's a safer bet if you want
- 16:20Speaker 1: to use him by using him early in the game
- 16:24Speaker 1: and at the start of the game and then keeping
- 16:26Speaker 1: him in as the DH. Now, Tyler Glass now is
- 16:29Speaker 1: lined up for that game? Am I right? Alana? That's
- 16:31Speaker 1: Glass now? Game?
- 16:32Speaker 2: It is correct?
- 16:33Speaker 1: Okay, correct? So you'd have Tyler Glass now you can
- 16:37Speaker 1: start him, or you can use a Tani for an
- 16:39Speaker 1: inning or two and then go to Glass. Now, as
- 16:41Speaker 1: long as that he knew glassdow knew that that was
- 16:44Speaker 1: the plan, I don't imagine it would be that disruptive.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Yeah, honestly, we all know this better than anybody can.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Is that it's Johnny Holstaff. The second the first guy
- 16:53Speaker 2: gets into trouble, here comes everybody else trying to force
- 16:56Speaker 2: the issue. All right, justin Antonucci fifty one to eighty.
- 16:59Speaker 2: Here's the question, would it surprise you can if a
- 17:01Speaker 2: playoff caliber team like the Padres or the Braves in
- 17:04Speaker 2: this case, I guess to hire Albert Poolhols, who has
- 17:07Speaker 2: no real managerial experience. It doesn't seem like you need
- 17:10Speaker 2: didn't have any experience to get these jobs.
- 17:13Speaker 1: That's right, And you go back to Aaron Boone. When
- 17:15Speaker 1: Aaron Boone was hired, actually I was critical of the
- 17:17Speaker 1: move because he had no managerial or coaching experience at
- 17:21Speaker 1: any level. He had just been on ESPN and come
- 17:23Speaker 1: off the field. And yet it worked out pretty well
- 17:26Speaker 1: for Aaron Boone. Regardless of what you think of him lately, overall,
- 17:29Speaker 1: the record is good. He certainly has proven he can
- 17:32Speaker 1: handle the job. He's not incompetent, despite what some people
- 17:35Speaker 1: might believe, so it would be somewhat surprising. But we've
- 17:39Speaker 1: seen teams do this now, and we've seen teams reach
- 17:42Speaker 1: for less experienced people in that position. Stephen Vote is
- 17:47Speaker 1: another great example. Stephen Vote was really pretty much coming
- 17:50Speaker 1: off the field as well. Dave Ross the same. So
- 17:54Speaker 1: these are not that exceptional to these kinds of decisions anymore.
- 17:59Speaker 2: Okay, five seven one four. Will Roberts pull Yamamoto early
- 18:04Speaker 2: if he's struggling or just live and die can with
- 18:07Speaker 2: him regardless due to the leaky bullpen? I mean, it's
- 18:11Speaker 2: not an enviable decision.
- 18:12Speaker 1: Correct, it's not, And it's a great question, and certainly
- 18:16Speaker 1: it is dependent on where they are in the game,
- 18:20Speaker 1: where Yamamoto is, where they are in the lineup. I
- 18:23Speaker 1: don't mean to evade the question, but we have to
- 18:25Speaker 1: see how this plays out. And I think the real
- 18:28Speaker 1: question that you're answering or you're asking here is will
- 18:32Speaker 1: he stay with him an extra hitter or an extra
- 18:34Speaker 1: inning to buy more time to try to cover more
- 18:37Speaker 1: outs before he goes to the bullpen. That is going
- 18:40Speaker 1: to be the flashpoint of this game, perhaps and it's
- 18:44Speaker 1: going to be really interesting to see what Dave Roberts does.
- 18:46Speaker 1: He'll have Sasaki for two innings at some point if
- 18:48Speaker 1: he needs him, and he'll have others available as well.
- 18:52Speaker 1: But that bullpen hasn't been great, let's face it, and
- 18:55Speaker 1: I'm sure he would prefer Yamamoto to go as deep
- 18:58Speaker 1: into this game as possible.
- 19:00Speaker 2: Yeah, complete game, great, it's three in the postseason. We'll
- 19:03Speaker 2: take it. This is question next that's coming up.
- 19:05Speaker 3: Ken.
- 19:05Speaker 2: I absolutely love this is from a Cowboys in Choir
- 19:08Speaker 2: seventy two fifty nine says, regardless of Toronto wins, how
- 19:12Speaker 2: much does the World Series Championship appeal? Actually there's two
- 19:17Speaker 2: different questions that are saying the same thing. How much
- 19:19Speaker 2: does the World Series Championship enhance the Blue Jays appeal
- 19:22Speaker 2: for mar que names in free agency? I love this question.
- 19:26Speaker 1: It is a good question, and it's interesting to me.
- 19:30Speaker 1: The Blue Jays, yes, in recent years, have had trouble
- 19:32Speaker 1: getting the big free agents, but there have been reasons
- 19:35Speaker 1: for that. In each case, Otani and Yamamoto and Sasaki
- 19:39Speaker 1: just wanted to play for the Dodgers. Soto wanted to
- 19:41Speaker 1: play for the Yankees. It seemed at the time. I'm
- 19:43Speaker 1: sorry the Mets at the time, and it wasn't necessarily
- 19:49Speaker 1: a statement on the Blue Jays or on Toronto that
- 19:52Speaker 1: those players chose to be elsewhere. If you go back
- 19:54Speaker 1: to the nineties, when the Jays, of course won back
- 19:57Speaker 1: to Backworld Series in ninety two or ninety three, Ronto
- 20:00Speaker 1: was a destination for players. They liked playing in Toronto.
- 20:03Speaker 1: They didn't mind going there and being in a different
- 20:06Speaker 1: country or anything like that. Now there are challenges to
- 20:08Speaker 1: playing in Toronto, there's no question about it. You do
- 20:11Speaker 1: have the extra customs when you're traveling back and forth.
- 20:15Speaker 1: But Kevin Gossman signed with the Blue Jays, George Springer
- 20:18Speaker 1: signed with the Blue Jays, Jeff Hoffman signed with the
- 20:20Speaker 1: Blue Jays. It's not like this place is considered undesirable.
- 20:24Speaker 1: In fact, it's one of the great cities in the world.
- 20:27Speaker 1: Every time i'm here, it amazes me. It's culturally diverse,
- 20:30Speaker 1: it's got everything you would want, restaurants, it's clean, everything
- 20:35Speaker 1: you want. It's almost like a better version of New
- 20:38Speaker 1: York in some ways. So to me, it shouldn't be
- 20:41Speaker 1: a problem for Toronto Blue Jays to attract free agents
- 20:44Speaker 1: regardless in the circumstances that we've mentioned, it just seemed
- 20:48Speaker 1: that they weren't the team of choice for those particular players.
- 20:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree with you. Toronto's a great city. I
- 20:53Speaker 2: have been there several times. I love it every single
- 20:54Speaker 2: time that I go. Coming up, we are gonna talk
- 20:57Speaker 2: dude and Dork of the week. Ken and I both
- 20:59Speaker 2: have our selection set. We'll be back right after this break.
- 21:03Speaker 3: Bet, I'm jam account holders today. How about in any
- 21:06Speaker 3: sport parlay boost token. You can score a bigger payout
- 21:09Speaker 3: if your wager with that token. Hits tokens can be
- 21:12Speaker 3: used on parlays and on same game parlays. Gambling problem
- 21:15Speaker 3: or concerned, there's help called one eight hundred gambler.
- 21:19Speaker 1: Dude, Dude, dude.
- 21:27Speaker 2: All right, time for Dude of the Week, and Ken
- 21:29Speaker 2: and I have both selected a Toronto Blue Jay. Ken,
- 21:32Speaker 2: you have the honors.
- 21:34Speaker 1: Treya Savage and Treya Savage. What he did in Game
- 21:37Speaker 1: five most strikeouts by a rookie pitcher in a World
- 21:40Speaker 1: Series Game twelve, I don't know what more we can
- 21:43Speaker 1: say about him. This guy started this season in the
- 21:46Speaker 1: Florida State League in the need and jumped every level
- 21:49Speaker 1: to get to the big leagues at twenty two he
- 21:51Speaker 1: is unquestionably for me, the dude of the week.
- 21:55Speaker 2: Yeah, pitching in front of about three hundred and sixty seven
- 21:57Speaker 2: people and then he's absolutely shoving in the world's congratulations
- 22:01Speaker 2: to Trey Savage and his entire family because it's been
- 22:03Speaker 2: fun to see the emotions and everything going on with
- 22:06Speaker 2: the entire clan. Mine is Will Klein. I mean, to me,
- 22:09Speaker 2: Will Klein Ken was kind of like the Brent Honeywell
- 22:12Speaker 2: of last year for the Dodgers or the Nathan Valdi
- 22:14Speaker 2: in twenty eighteen. And again, you know, lower has been
- 22:18Speaker 2: pretty good in this in this series as well. But
- 22:20Speaker 2: to me, Will kleinb coming out of the bullpen and
- 22:23Speaker 2: pitching I want to say four shutout innings I believe
- 22:25Speaker 2: if I'm remembering that correctly in relief has been such
- 22:29Speaker 2: a fun thing to see for him. Perhaps nobody knew
- 22:31Speaker 2: much about the guys, unless you, of course, are following
- 22:34Speaker 2: the Blue Jays all the time. But huge, huge, gutsy performance,
- 22:39Speaker 2: and he certainly deserves a lot of credit because relievers
- 22:42Speaker 2: need love. To Ken Rosenthal, all.
- 22:45Speaker 1: Right, that's one thing, I know you're misspoke. Just he
- 22:47Speaker 1: had a brain cramp he's with the Dodgers.
- 22:50Speaker 2: I mean's sorry, Well yeah, my bad will flyin. That's
- 22:53Speaker 2: what I meant with Dodgers.
- 22:54Speaker 1: I apologize and don't jump on a lot anyone. We
- 22:57Speaker 1: all make mistakes. I do it all.
- 23:01Speaker 2: You're right, You're right, Trey is savage with the Blue Jays,
- 23:04Speaker 2: will climb with the Daughter's iypologiss all right. Time Now
- 23:06Speaker 2: for the dork of the week. That is not me.
- 23:17Speaker 2: All right, my faux pa, of course, but that is
- 23:19Speaker 2: not I'm not going to pick myself this dork of
- 23:21Speaker 2: the week, although I should ken Who is yours?
- 23:24Speaker 1: My dork of the week? Is anyone anyone thinking it
- 23:28Speaker 1: would be a good idea to shut down the sport
- 23:30Speaker 1: of baseball after the Collective Argaining Agreement expires December one,
- 23:34Speaker 1: twenty twenty six. This sport is doing really well. The
- 23:38Speaker 1: World Series is getting better ratings than I think a
- 23:41Speaker 1: lot of people expected, considering that Canada does not count
- 23:44Speaker 1: in the ratings. It's been a very electric World Series,
- 23:47Speaker 1: really intriguing, so many big stars, so many good things happening.
- 23:50Speaker 1: This sport is thriving. Can it be improved? Absolutely, it
- 23:54Speaker 1: can be improved, and it can be improved as I've
- 23:56Speaker 1: said many times before, without a salary cap, there are
- 23:59Speaker 1: other things you can do to get a better collective
- 24:02Speaker 1: bargaining agreement to make it somewhat more of a financially
- 24:05Speaker 1: level playing field. So, anyone thinking of shutting down the sport,
- 24:08Speaker 1: and I'm sure there are a few owners out there
- 24:10Speaker 1: who are thinking of shutting down the sport. Dork of
- 24:12Speaker 1: the week, Yeah.
- 24:13Speaker 2: One way to improve the sport without a salary cap
- 24:16Speaker 2: is to read the room. My dork of the week
- 24:18Speaker 2: is Major League Baseball for deciding it was a good
- 24:20Speaker 2: idea to have the Jonas Brothers perform a concert in
- 24:23Speaker 2: the middle of a World Series game. If I'm the
- 24:26Speaker 2: starting pitchers in either one of those games, I'm thinking,
- 24:28Speaker 2: what the heck is happening. I am all for the
- 24:31Speaker 2: Stand Up for Cancer movement. That's a very incredible movement,
- 24:35Speaker 2: and it's been a part of Major League Baseball in
- 24:36Speaker 2: the World Series for a number of years, and that
- 24:39Speaker 2: part I love. But then to switch over to a
- 24:42Speaker 2: concert in a time and a game ken that is
- 24:45Speaker 2: not a natural break. It was almost as if Major
- 24:48Speaker 2: League Baseball was trying to have a halftime show in
- 24:51Speaker 2: a World Series game. That's not the appropriate time, that's
- 24:55Speaker 2: not the appropriate field. Had nothing to do with Toronto,
- 24:58Speaker 2: it had nothing to do with Fox. This was Major
- 25:00Speaker 2: League Baseball's decision of doing this, and it was just
- 25:04Speaker 2: not the right move in my opinion.
- 25:07Speaker 1: Well, I will say this, I don't know where that
- 25:10Speaker 1: idea came from, but there are times I feel where
- 25:13Speaker 1: MLB is like the dorky kid at school trying to
- 25:16Speaker 1: be cool and not saying that the sports shouldn't try
- 25:20Speaker 1: to be cooler. We've talked about this and promoting players
- 25:23Speaker 1: and all that, but this was a reach and a
- 25:26Speaker 1: lot of people didn't like it. A lot of people
- 25:27Speaker 1: don't like a lot of things. That's the way of
- 25:29Speaker 1: the world right now, but this to me was a stretch.
- 25:32Speaker 1: As you said, Alana, yeah, just.
- 25:34Speaker 2: Read the room, have a little bit of feel all right.
- 25:36Speaker 2: If you are watching on television, Thank you guys so
- 25:38Speaker 2: much for joining us. We will see you next time
- 25:40Speaker 2: we have a couple more minutes with our YouTube family.
- 25:43Speaker 2: Right after this, Ken, you and I were talking about
- 25:46Speaker 2: how awesome a city like Toronto is and it has
- 25:49Speaker 2: been one of my favorite places to go for a
- 25:51Speaker 2: number of years. What's the scene been like there, Because
- 25:55Speaker 2: this is a country I mean, I know Toronto's a city,
- 25:58Speaker 2: but the country of cam a city of Toronto. This
- 26:02Speaker 2: is a fan base that is hungry. They so desperately
- 26:06Speaker 2: would love to have a World championship in their corner.
- 26:10Speaker 2: What's it been like for you.
- 26:11Speaker 1: It's been really cool to see people so excited and
- 26:15Speaker 1: there are a ton of people wearing Blue Jays gear
- 26:17Speaker 1: out and about. Of course, you saw the watch parties
- 26:20Speaker 1: at Rogers Center for the games in Los Angeles. They
- 26:24Speaker 1: had thirty thousand people for Game five and apparently it
- 26:27Speaker 1: was an electric environment in there. Is talking with some
- 26:29Speaker 1: of the security guards in the ballpark yesterday and they
- 26:33Speaker 1: were saying it was incredible the scene. So yes, it
- 26:36Speaker 1: has been on it just as you said, a really
- 26:39Speaker 1: cool atmosphere, a really great thing to see a city
- 26:42Speaker 1: that has not had a World Series in thirty two
- 26:45Speaker 1: years come alive like this. They love their Blue Jays, hear,
- 26:48Speaker 1: just like fans in all cities love their teams. And
- 26:52Speaker 1: it has been a lot of fun to be here
- 26:54Speaker 1: during the Blue Jays run. We've been my team at
- 26:56Speaker 1: Fox on them for all three of the see all
- 26:59Speaker 1: three of them series, so it's been very cool.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, it's been it's been great to see all
- 27:05Speaker 2: of the fans obviously enjoying it, but the broadcasters and
- 27:09Speaker 2: you know, Dan Shulman and Buck Martinez and Hazel May
- 27:12Speaker 2: and so many others. Of course, I'm not trying to
- 27:14Speaker 2: single anybody out, but just the enthusiasm, and it's been
- 27:17Speaker 2: it's been a ton of fun to see. What are
- 27:19Speaker 2: you looking forward to tonight? Ken, in terms of what
- 27:21Speaker 2: do you need to see? Game six obviously on the
- 27:24Speaker 2: brink for the Blue Jays and the Dodgers trying to
- 27:26Speaker 2: force the issue.
- 27:27Speaker 1: To me, it's a very simple storyline. Can Yamamoto do
- 27:30Speaker 1: it again? And if he does it again, then we
- 27:33Speaker 1: have a really interesting scenario because then the question becomes
- 27:36Speaker 1: can the Dodgers get to Gossman? And they did somewhat
- 27:40Speaker 1: in the previous game. Of course, he pitched great and
- 27:42Speaker 1: then he gave up a little bit in the seventh inning,
- 27:45Speaker 1: So that to me is what this is about.
- 27:48Speaker 2: All right, Well, we look forward to it. We want
- 27:50Speaker 2: to thank you guys certainly for being with us here
- 27:52Speaker 2: on Fair Territory all new episodes. Of course, before I
- 27:54Speaker 2: let you go, though, do you expect Springer to start?
- 27:56Speaker 3: Ken?
- 27:57Speaker 2: You've had these conversations with John Schneider. Obviously he's always
- 28:00Speaker 2: been available off the bench, but is he going to
- 28:02Speaker 2: be in a starting lineup?
- 28:04Speaker 1: I will say this Initially, when Schneider said that to me,
- 28:08Speaker 1: I can't remember which game was, Game four, I believe
- 28:10Speaker 1: when I asked him in game when he was very
- 28:12Speaker 1: positive about Springer's outlook, I was skeptical, and I remained
- 28:16Speaker 1: somewhat skeptical. But they have continued to say that he
- 28:19Speaker 1: is available and that he could have started the last game,
- 28:22Speaker 1: So I sort of do expect him to start to
- 28:25Speaker 1: I based on their comments, I don't know that they're bluffing.
- 28:27Speaker 1: In fact, I asked someone with the Blue Jays at
- 28:29Speaker 1: one point, Hey, is this decoy stuff or what tell
- 28:31Speaker 1: me the truth? And they said, no, he is available,
- 28:34Speaker 1: so we shall see.
- 28:36Speaker 2: Yeah. It's interesting too because the last couple of games
- 28:38Speaker 2: they haven't needed them in that big situation, because there's
- 28:40Speaker 2: been enough of a cushion, certainly in Game five, that
- 28:43Speaker 2: he was not needed in that situation. All right, So anyway,
- 28:47Speaker 2: fair Territory is done. We will be back next week.
- 28:50Speaker 2: Of course. Today's Foul Territory Todd Frazer, Eric krat Scott
- 28:53Speaker 2: Broun has Kevin Pillar, Tim Kerchin and Patie Wou and
- 28:56Speaker 2: don't forget guys. Both Foul Territory and Dodgers Territory will
- 29:00Speaker 2: have live posting shows right after the game. Will be
- 29:03Speaker 2: next time
