- 0:16Speaker 1: lineman Dalton Reisner and Bengals dot com editor Jeff Hobson.

- 0:43Speaker 1: a quick reminder that you can have the latest edition
- 0:45Speaker 1: of this podcast delivered right to your phone, tablet or
- 0:49Speaker 1: computer by subscribing wherever you get your podcasts. It's the
- 0:53Speaker 1: greatest thing since Howard co Sell. I have no idea
- 0:59Speaker 1: why started doing this, but over the last couple of
- 1:01Speaker 1: weeks I have been watching every video I can find
- 1:05Speaker 1: on YouTube of legendary sportscaster Howard co Cell. If he
- 1:10Speaker 1: was before your time, it's hard to explain how big
- 1:13Speaker 1: of a deal Cosell was in the nineteen seventies. And
- 1:16Speaker 1: eighties as one of the original voices of Monday Night Football.
- 1:20Speaker 1: He helped make the NFL in primetime a huge rating success,
- 1:25Speaker 1: and there has never been a broadcaster more frequently imitated.
- 1:30Speaker 1: In my childhood, everybody could do a Howard co Cell,
- 1:34Speaker 1: but he was legitimately a phenomenal broadcaster. In fact, my
- 1:39Speaker 1: favorite play by play call of all time in any
- 1:43Speaker 1: sport comes from boxing, when a young George Foreman stunned
- 1:48Speaker 1: Joe Frasier for the heavyweight title in nineteen seventy three.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Here's Howard Cosell behind the mic.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Down cost Graiza, Sit down, coast, Craisa, down go. The
- 2:01Speaker 2: heavyweight champion is taking the mandatory eight count, and Farman
- 2:05Speaker 2: is as poised as can be in a new Joe konner.
- 2:09Speaker 2: He is as poised as can be. Fraser is dazed.
- 2:12Speaker 2: He is getting again and again and again the same
- 2:16Speaker 2: head that was hit so often by Mohammad al Lei.
- 2:19Speaker 2: He is all over Fraser again. He has Fraser in
- 2:22Speaker 2: the corner, is praise, his knees buckled. He is down.
- 2:27Speaker 1: He is down for the.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Fourth time in the fight.
- 2:30Speaker 2: George Farman is doing that Joe Fraser what he did
- 2:33Speaker 2: as a nineteen year old to a veteran Russia, a
- 2:37Speaker 2: fellow named the owner Shapoulis in October of nineteen sixty
- 2:40Speaker 2: eighth in the Mexico City Arena. A quicklift from George.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Another Fraser is down for the fifth time in this fight.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Angie Dundeea's screaming stopping Freddie Petiko Ali's ductor.
- 2:53Speaker 4: Next me, it is.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Over, It is over.
- 2:56Speaker 5: It is over in the second round.
- 2:59Speaker 2: George fah this is the heavyweight chimpion of the world.
- 3:04Speaker 1: So good right. If you have a night where there's
- 3:08Speaker 1: nothing you want to watch on TV, go to YouTube
- 3:11Speaker 1: search for Howard Cosell and pick out a documentary, a
- 3:15Speaker 1: talk show appearance, a speaking engagement, you name it. He
- 3:20Speaker 1: was truly one of one. Now let's get to my
- 3:24Speaker 1: first guest. When training camp got underway last year, offensive
- 3:28Speaker 1: lineman Dalton Reisner wasn't here. He was an unsigned free agent,
- 3:33Speaker 1: so he would lift weights in his garage and then
- 3:36Speaker 1: go to a patch of grass near his house and
- 3:39Speaker 1: do sprints and offensive line drills in front of amused
- 3:43Speaker 1: people walking by in order to stay in shape until
- 3:46Speaker 1: a needy team called roughly one week before the start
- 3:50Speaker 1: of the season. That team turned out to be the Bengals,
- 3:53Speaker 1: and by the end of the year, Reisner earned a
- 3:55Speaker 1: contract extension. In fact, over the final seven weeks after
- 4:00Speaker 1: he became the full time starter at right guard, the
- 4:03Speaker 1: Bengals ranked fifth in the NFL and pass blocking grade
- 4:07Speaker 1: according to Pro Football Focus. I spoke to the thirty
- 4:11Speaker 1: one year old as he begins his eighth NFL season, Dalton,
- 4:16Speaker 1: At this time last year, you were not in an
- 4:18Speaker 1: NFL training camp. Did that make you feel anything when
- 4:22Speaker 1: this camp got underway, Yeah.
- 4:24Speaker 5: One hundred percent. I was looking back at pictures from
- 4:26Speaker 5: like a year ago, and I was, you know, going
- 4:28Speaker 5: to that local grass patch. I told you guys about
- 4:30Speaker 5: working out in my cleat, stepping in dog poop, old
- 4:33Speaker 5: people staring at me wondering.
- 4:35Speaker 6: If I was going to play NFL football.
- 4:36Speaker 5: So I'm working a hell of a lot harder this year,
- 4:39Speaker 5: this time of year that's going to pay dividends. I'm
- 4:41Speaker 5: with an organization that I love, so that pays dividends already.
- 4:45Speaker 6: So it's a zero two.
- 4:46Speaker 5: One hundred is completely a complete one eighty flip in
- 4:49Speaker 5: terms of where I was last year compared to where
- 4:50Speaker 5: I'm this year. I'm working a hell of a lot harder,
- 4:53Speaker 5: I'll tell you that much. In day two, liking where
- 4:55Speaker 5: we're at and feels good to not be working out
- 4:57Speaker 5: by the mailboxes.
- 5:00Speaker 1: There any tiny part of you that thanks. You know,
- 5:04Speaker 1: last year wasn't all that bad.
- 5:07Speaker 6: You know, it was such a roller coaster.
- 5:08Speaker 5: It's like when you show up you don't know anybody.
- 5:12Speaker 5: You had a new organization, your wife has to move
- 5:14Speaker 5: your family across the country and your vehicles and find
- 5:16Speaker 5: a place to live.
- 5:17Speaker 6: The stress is insurmountable.
- 5:18Speaker 5: You learn a playbook in five days, and on top
- 5:21Speaker 5: of all of that, the starting guard goes down, you
- 5:24Speaker 5: have to play at an away game against the Cleveland Browns.
- 5:27Speaker 5: But some of those really tough moments make such great moments.
- 5:31Speaker 5: But then playing bad week two. I think that was
- 5:33Speaker 5: a good example of having so much time off and
- 5:37Speaker 5: rust and having an all pro guy in Armstead kind
- 5:41Speaker 5: of taking advantage and knowing, hey, this dude showed up
- 5:44Speaker 5: ten days ago, let's go at him.
- 5:46Speaker 6: Let's take advantage of him. Losing my spot, earning it back.
- 5:49Speaker 5: It's a long story, but regardless, I would say, yes,
- 5:52Speaker 5: there's some things from last year that might have been nice,
- 5:56Speaker 5: but at the same time, it's not worth the stress
- 5:59Speaker 5: and the highest and the lows that it was last year.
- 6:01Speaker 5: It feels so much better this year to be somewhere
- 6:03Speaker 5: the place I wanted to be, know my teammates, have
- 6:05Speaker 5: our place to live, be working on my craft early,
- 6:08Speaker 5: helping this team win, and I think we're gonna have
- 6:09Speaker 5: so much better of a year than we did last
- 6:11Speaker 5: year because we're yelling, because we're doing this work early.
- 6:14Speaker 1: I was watching oline drills yesterday. You were doing a
- 6:17Speaker 1: lot of coaching, particularly with Jalen Rivers. It's year eight.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Is this something that's evolved for you or you feel
- 6:24Speaker 1: like you can be another voice to add to the
- 6:26Speaker 1: guys that are actually on the coaching staff.
- 6:28Speaker 5: I definitely think that I can be another voice, But
- 6:30Speaker 5: I just I respect these teammates so much. Jan Then
- 6:33Speaker 5: Rivers has so much promise. He's gonna be such a
- 6:35Speaker 5: great football player. I want to be surprised if he's
- 6:37Speaker 5: definitely the Bengal's long term option here. He's just a
- 6:40Speaker 5: great football player and I want to help him grow.
- 6:42Speaker 5: I want to make an impact on my teammates. I
- 6:44Speaker 5: don't want to be a guy that is so caught
- 6:47Speaker 5: up in myself and my own story that when guys
- 6:50Speaker 5: look back on me, they say, yeah, a good player,
- 6:53Speaker 5: and that's all they have to say. I would hope
- 6:54Speaker 5: some of these guys can look back and say, like,
- 6:56Speaker 5: man like I learned so much from that guy, the
- 6:58Speaker 5: type of human being he was, a man he was
- 7:01Speaker 5: I look up to and I admired. So I guess
- 7:03Speaker 5: I just try to be fully me, and what comes
- 7:05Speaker 5: with that is trying to help some of these guys.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Your relationship with a Marius Mims intrigues me. There seems
- 7:11Speaker 1: to be an older brother younger brother vibe that's developed
- 7:14Speaker 1: between you two guys. How would you describe it?
- 7:16Speaker 6: I just really respect him. He's a great football player.
- 7:19Speaker 6: He's a.
- 7:21Speaker 5: Beast for the age that he is, not just physically,
- 7:25Speaker 5: but he's growing mentally and he's growing up.
- 7:28Speaker 6: He's turning into a man.
- 7:29Speaker 5: He's understanding and seeing the game better than he did
- 7:32Speaker 5: last year already. And I've only had two practices with him,
- 7:34Speaker 5: and he's starting to do it, and he's hungry and
- 7:38Speaker 5: he's willing to change in certain areas to be better.
- 7:42Speaker 5: He has supported me ever since I showed up. He
- 7:44Speaker 5: has welcomed me with open arms. I want to call
- 7:47Speaker 5: it a big brother relationship because I think when you
- 7:50Speaker 5: do that, it almost like makes me feel like I'm
- 7:52Speaker 5: the big dog.
- 7:53Speaker 6: But like one hundred percent, that's like my little bro.
- 7:56Speaker 6: I got him.
- 7:56Speaker 5: But he's also just like my brother. He's also he
- 7:58Speaker 5: could be the same. He could be my twin, you
- 7:59Speaker 5: know what I mean. So like, I just got a
- 8:01Speaker 5: lot of respect for him, love him, really excited to
- 8:03Speaker 5: help him, excel I said all the time to him, Man,
- 8:07Speaker 5: I said, I could care less if I have a
- 8:08Speaker 5: on paper mediocre year, but you're having an all pro year.
- 8:12Speaker 5: And if that's because I have to take some balls
- 8:13Speaker 5: for you, I'll do it every time. But I'll do
- 8:15Speaker 5: it any day of the week. Bro, I'm trying to
- 8:17Speaker 5: trying to get you to that number two contract.
- 8:19Speaker 1: We're chatting with Dalton Reisner. I'm going to ask you
- 8:22Speaker 1: not to be modest here. His grade skyrocketed after you
- 8:27Speaker 1: two guys started to play next to each other. How
- 8:29Speaker 1: much do you think you helped him?
- 8:32Speaker 5: You know, I'd like to think that I have had
- 8:33Speaker 5: an impact on him and the way that he's playing ball.
- 8:37Speaker 5: Maybe that goes from uh setting a standard that maybe
- 8:40Speaker 5: it comes from communication, Maybe it comes from how many
- 8:42Speaker 5: years I've played in the league, but a lot of
- 8:45Speaker 5: that is credit to him, A lot of that is
- 8:46Speaker 5: credit to Scott Peters, a lot of that is credit
- 8:48Speaker 5: to Dan Pitcher and Zach Taylor in this organization in
- 8:52Speaker 5: so many areas. So I think it's easy to point
- 8:54Speaker 5: at one person and say that's the common you know,
- 8:57Speaker 5: denominator that's changed. But there's so many people that go
- 8:59Speaker 5: into this, and I think that Scott Peters has been
- 9:01Speaker 5: great for him. He's been great for himself because of
- 9:03Speaker 5: the work he's put in. You can lead a horse
- 9:05Speaker 5: to water, but that doesn't mean it's going to drink,
- 9:07Speaker 5: and he's been drinking and he's been doing it. And
- 9:09Speaker 5: I've come in and I think I've done my part
- 9:11Speaker 5: as well Dan Pitcher and Zactay to put us in
- 9:13Speaker 5: the positions to be great. So without trying to be
- 9:16Speaker 5: modest man, I think that's genuinely the right answers.
- 9:19Speaker 6: There's a lot of people around, but it's him really
- 9:21Speaker 6: doing it.
- 9:22Speaker 1: You have not had the good fortune of being on
- 9:24Speaker 1: a bunch of great teams in your NFL career. You
- 9:27Speaker 1: went to the playoffs a couple of years ago, but
- 9:28Speaker 1: that's been it. What does this roster mean to you,
- 9:32Speaker 1: and the chance to legitimately be playing in February of next.
- 9:36Speaker 6: Year, it excites me.
- 9:37Speaker 5: I'm trying not to be too excited about it, though,
- 9:39Speaker 5: because it's like the work that we put in now
- 9:41Speaker 5: is what matters the first game, the second game, the
- 9:44Speaker 5: third game. We got to take it one day at
- 9:45Speaker 5: a time, and we got to just be looking at
- 9:47Speaker 5: training camp, like right now, it's training camp, and then
- 9:49Speaker 5: we'll look at the Lions, and then we'll look at
- 9:51Speaker 5: the Bear's joint practices, and then from the Bears joint practice,
- 9:53Speaker 5: we'll look at Philly and then from there it'll be Tampa.
- 9:55Speaker 5: And if we can approach it that way with this roster,
- 9:58Speaker 5: who knows. But if we get a ahead of ourselves
- 10:00Speaker 5: and we think we're hot, and we forget that we
- 10:02Speaker 5: went six and eleven last year on paper, and we
- 10:05Speaker 5: think that we got it all figured out, we'll get
- 10:07Speaker 5: It's football, you'll get you'll get punched in the mouth.
- 10:09Speaker 5: So for me personally, and I know Zach Taylor's been
- 10:11Speaker 5: kind of reciprocating this or he's been the one starting it,
- 10:13Speaker 5: and I'm reciprocating it is let's take it one day
- 10:16Speaker 5: at a time. Let's stay humble, Let's put the work
- 10:18Speaker 5: in now so that we can actually go and earn
- 10:19Speaker 5: that respect.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Describe what it's like to break the huddle, walk to
- 10:24Speaker 1: the line of scrimmage and see Dexter Lawrence.
- 10:28Speaker 5: Well you better jog to the huddle. U les Burrow
- 10:29Speaker 5: will be on your ass. So if you see me walking,
- 10:31Speaker 5: just know Joe's on my ass. It's not fun. Whenever
- 10:35Speaker 5: you know that it's you having to deal with him.
- 10:37Speaker 5: He takes up two bodies, he changes the whole game plan.
- 10:40Speaker 5: And when you're not dealing with Dexter Lawrence, you're dealing
- 10:42Speaker 5: with Jonathan Allen or TJ.
- 10:43Speaker 6: Slayton right now.
- 10:44Speaker 5: So, like, these guys are elite football players and they're
- 10:47Speaker 5: making it really hard on us. And guys like Dexter
- 10:50Speaker 5: and these guys aren't just standing in one spot.
- 10:51Speaker 6: They're moving and they're chirping and they want to be great.
- 10:55Speaker 5: They know that the defensive side of the ball didn't
- 10:56Speaker 5: have a great year last year, so they're really hungry.
- 10:59Speaker 5: Us as an all offense could care less with some
- 11:01Speaker 5: of the numbers we put up last year.
- 11:03Speaker 6: It's about what have you done.
- 11:03Speaker 4: For me lately?
- 11:04Speaker 6: So what I'm getting at is there's just a bunch
- 11:06Speaker 6: of competitions.
- 11:06Speaker 5: So when you break that huddle and you walk up
- 11:08Speaker 5: to the line and you see Dexter, it might suck
- 11:10Speaker 5: right It may suck right now, but you know in
- 11:12Speaker 5: four or five weeks you're gonna see himrotting out there
- 11:13Speaker 5: against the bucks, and you say, have fun, have fun.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Mike Brown addresses the team right before training camp begins.
- 11:22Speaker 1: He's been doing this for years, combination of history and
- 11:25Speaker 1: his hopes and expectations for the team. You weren't here
- 11:28Speaker 1: for that last year. What did you think of the
- 11:31Speaker 1: team owner getting up and addressing the troops.
- 11:33Speaker 6: I think it's really cool.
- 11:34Speaker 5: I mean last year at the owner of the Christmas party,
- 11:37Speaker 5: he addressed us. The ownership addressed us, and I thought
- 11:39Speaker 5: that was so cool. I was trying to think about
- 11:41Speaker 5: two things at once, because in Minnesota the owners addressed
- 11:44Speaker 5: us a few times, but not like they have here,
- 11:46Speaker 5: and then in Denver we didn't even have an owner,
- 11:48Speaker 5: and then when we did, we barely heard fro him.
- 11:50Speaker 6: So for me, it's really.
- 11:51Speaker 5: Cool to see it so involved and see what a
- 11:54Speaker 5: family affair it is. And for me, it was honestly
- 11:56Speaker 5: really intriguing, and I grew a lot of respect for
- 11:59Speaker 5: him because of what he got up there without any notes,
- 12:01Speaker 5: and he jotted off eight different scouts starting with Duke
- 12:06Speaker 5: Tobin to Stephen Redisovich and Tyler, and he just like
- 12:09Speaker 5: went down this whole list Potts and all these people
- 12:12Speaker 5: and talked I'm guessing you were in there, and talked
- 12:13Speaker 5: about each person and what they did for us this offseason,
- 12:17Speaker 5: where they're from. And it wasn't it wasn't light like.
- 12:19Speaker 5: It was really cool to see how invested he was
- 12:22Speaker 5: and how he wanted to take his twenty minutes to
- 12:24Speaker 5: not talk about himself or his dad, or the legacy
- 12:27Speaker 5: or the Brown family. He wanted to talk about the
- 12:29Speaker 5: scouts and what they had done for the team this year.
- 12:31Speaker 6: And I just thought that was really special. So I've
- 12:34Speaker 6: gotten to know.
- 12:34Speaker 5: Them and Katie and Troy and Duke Tobin and oh
- 12:38Speaker 5: my gosh, I couldn't say enough things about Duke Tobin.
- 12:40Speaker 5: I love that guy, Stephen Redisovich, all these guys. So
- 12:42Speaker 5: it's just cool to play for and upstairs that you love.
- 12:46Speaker 1: All right, I've learned an important lesson today. You break
- 12:49Speaker 1: the huddle and jog to the line of.
- 12:51Speaker 6: Scrim and me walking. You know I'm in trouble.
- 12:53Speaker 1: I appreciate you as Ellis.
- 12:55Speaker 6: Yeah, God bless you man well.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Reisner miss training camp last year. Jeff Hobson hasn't missed
- 13:01Speaker 1: one in nearly three decades. This is his twenty seventh
- 13:05Speaker 1: Bengals training camp. Before we get to my conversation with Jeff,
- 13:09Speaker 1: here's a quick reminder that the Bengals Booth podcast is
- 13:12Speaker 1: brought to you by pay Corps, proud to be the
- 13:14Speaker 1: Bengals Official HR software provider, by Alta Fiber future proof
- 13:19Speaker 1: fiber Internet designed to elevate your home, business and community
- 13:23Speaker 1: to a new level, and by Kettering Health the best
- 13:27Speaker 1: care for the best fans. Kettering Health is the official
- 13:30Speaker 1: healthcare provider of the Bengals. Now time to discuss the
- 13:35Speaker 1: start of camp with Jeff Butch Hobson from Bengals dot Com. Butch,
- 13:41Speaker 1: we are recording on the morning of day two of
- 13:43Speaker 1: training camp. So there's one Bengals practice in the books.
- 13:47Speaker 1: It featured a fight and it featured an injury. Let's
- 13:51Speaker 1: start with the fight. They happen every year at training camp,
- 13:54Speaker 1: but usually not on day one. What did you make
- 13:57Speaker 1: of the timing and the combatants.
- 14:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I think Jamax, Chase, and DJ Turner are realized.
- 14:05Speaker 3: I mean, we know Chase is one of the is
- 14:07Speaker 3: the top player at his position. DJ Turner wants to
- 14:10Speaker 3: be the top of his and I think Chase respects
- 14:13Speaker 3: that and Chase respects Turner, and so we're in this.
- 14:17Speaker 3: You know, as text to Lawrence said, there's a lot
- 14:20Speaker 3: of alphas out there, and so you know, but you
- 14:23Speaker 3: remember back to last year, in the last couple of
- 14:25Speaker 3: training camps, Uh, Jim has been you know, he's been
- 14:28Speaker 3: pretty feisty, you know. But uh, I think it also
- 14:31Speaker 3: is a reflection. I hate to make too much of
- 14:34Speaker 3: stuff because you know, as we both talked to Joe
- 14:36Speaker 3: Flaco and you know who's seen it all in the
- 14:39Speaker 3: NFL and that he broke in in the Grover Cleveland administration.
- 14:43Speaker 4: So he's you know, he's seen.
- 14:45Speaker 3: The leather helmets, and you know, I just shrugged and said, oh,
- 14:48Speaker 3: there's another one. But I also think it underlines that
- 14:52Speaker 3: they know that this is the year that this is
- 14:55Speaker 3: you know what the front offices worked had to put
- 14:59Speaker 3: this team around them, and I think the players get that.
- 15:02Speaker 3: And I think that was a little bit of a
- 15:04Speaker 3: I think what we were seeing yesterday.
- 15:06Speaker 1: I did feel like the defense was playing with a
- 15:09Speaker 1: bit of an edge. Dejon Anthony had a hit that
- 15:12Speaker 1: was something that you're not supposed to do. Jalen Davis
- 15:16Speaker 1: kind of tackled Mike Asiki. So I think they're trying
- 15:19Speaker 1: to play right up to that line where nobody gets hurt,
- 15:23Speaker 1: but they're trying to show that this is a defense
- 15:27Speaker 1: that can handle one of the best offenses in the NFL.
- 15:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that that's always been a thing. They
- 15:32Speaker 3: always want to stop Burrow, and I think it kind
- 15:34Speaker 3: of reminds me a little bit of the twenty one
- 15:36Speaker 3: training camp where Hilton and Ouse and Henrickson were new guys,
- 15:41Speaker 3: and it was it was a little chippy because you know,
- 15:44Speaker 3: Burrow was at that point, Burrow was the golden boy.
- 15:47Speaker 3: He had not yet done what he had done now
- 15:50Speaker 3: and he was coming off, you know, an injured rookie season,
- 15:52Speaker 3: so you know, he still had the glow of the
- 15:54Speaker 3: overall pick in the National Championship at LSU, and so
- 15:58Speaker 3: you know, in the way Joe carries himself, he carries
- 16:01Speaker 3: himself as the man, you know, and so you know,
- 16:05Speaker 3: that makes for some you know, like I said, it
- 16:09Speaker 3: kind of reminded me of five years ago when they
- 16:10Speaker 3: were people were you know, people were trying to take
- 16:13Speaker 3: him down.
- 16:14Speaker 1: I witnessed an interesting exchange between Joe Burrow and Dexter
- 16:18Speaker 1: Lawrence just before practice got underway yesterday. I sent out
- 16:22Speaker 1: the video on social media. Basically, Dexter approaches Joe as
- 16:25Speaker 1: he's warming up and says something to the effective, I
- 16:28Speaker 1: want to see what you got, mister Burrow, and Joe
- 16:31Speaker 1: gives him a very confident look and says, you're going
- 16:34Speaker 1: to see it every day, brother. And I thought that
- 16:37Speaker 1: that really kind of captured that vibe between the alpha
- 16:41Speaker 1: on defense now and Dexter Lawrence and obviously the king
- 16:44Speaker 1: of the jungle, as Dexter referred to him, Joe Burrow.
- 16:47Speaker 3: Yeah, that was the best nugget of the day, HODI
- 16:49Speaker 3: that was that was well done. I flogged myself that
- 16:52Speaker 3: I didn't have that, but that was. But you're exactly right.
- 16:55Speaker 3: I mean, that's that says it all right there, you know,
- 16:59Speaker 3: all the themes that we want meeting the great off season,
- 17:03Speaker 3: what the defense has to do, Burrow trying to bring
- 17:06Speaker 3: the team along to him to his level.
- 17:09Speaker 4: I mean, it was you know, it was you know,
- 17:11Speaker 4: it was poetry.
- 17:13Speaker 1: The injury that I referenced earlier was to Shamar Stewart.
- 17:16Speaker 1: We do not have any official word yet on the severity.
- 17:19Speaker 1: The hope is obviously that it's not going to be
- 17:22Speaker 1: season ending, and there is some optimism at least that
- 17:25Speaker 1: that's the case. It's a shame because I also shot
- 17:29Speaker 1: some footage of him doing defensive line drills early in practice,
- 17:32Speaker 1: and man, he looks like he is a machine as
- 17:36Speaker 1: he comes into his second NFL camp.
- 17:38Speaker 3: I mean, if you remember back to the last camp,
- 17:40Speaker 3: well and back to I mean, whenever he's in there,
- 17:43Speaker 3: he does something, you know, And the problem is he's
- 17:46Speaker 3: just hasn't been in there. And you know, he didn't
- 17:50Speaker 3: have much of a camp last year because it all
- 17:53Speaker 3: holdout and he get you know, he missed nine games
- 17:55Speaker 3: because of injury, or you know, he missed half the
- 17:57Speaker 3: year because of injury.
- 17:58Speaker 4: So here's a guy who truly needs reps.
- 18:00Speaker 3: He was the last guy you know, who's who He's
- 18:04Speaker 3: the last guy that needs to miss snaps, you know,
- 18:06Speaker 3: because I really think I sensed, like you that he
- 18:09Speaker 3: was he's gonna, you know, if.
- 18:10Speaker 4: He had a full camp under him. I mean, he's
- 18:12Speaker 4: flashed every time he's went on the field. He's just
- 18:14Speaker 4: got to stay out there.
- 18:15Speaker 3: So you know, you know, I'm hoping that he doesn't
- 18:18Speaker 3: lose uh, you know, a lot of camp. But I
- 18:22Speaker 3: guess if you know, if if he does, if he
- 18:25Speaker 3: does miss camp, but he can get back in the season,
- 18:27Speaker 3: that's better than you know, that's better than the whole year.
- 18:29Speaker 4: But we'll see what happens.
- 18:30Speaker 3: Because I you know, they came into I had just
- 18:33Speaker 3: finished telling somebody right before he get hurt. Hey, it's
- 18:36Speaker 3: like they get two first round draft picks here because
- 18:38Speaker 3: Shamaar just didn't didn't play that much, you know, and
- 18:41Speaker 3: of course he'd be joining his old Day Inn teammate
- 18:43Speaker 3: Casius Howell on the edge their their first pick this year.
- 18:47Speaker 3: But uh, you know, we'll see, I I you know,
- 18:50Speaker 3: let's hope, you know that he's back in two weeks
- 18:52Speaker 3: or something.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Joe Burrow spoke after the first practice. One of the
- 18:55Speaker 1: things that stood out to me about his comments is
- 18:57Speaker 1: when he commented about the size of defensive line and
- 19:01Speaker 1: how that stands out to him. And we think about
- 19:04Speaker 1: Dexter Lawrence potentially having sacks and pressures on the quarterback.
- 19:07Speaker 1: But one thing I never considered until listening to Joe
- 19:11Speaker 1: is how he affects the quarterback's vision. Joe just commented
- 19:15Speaker 1: on with that big guy in your face, you have
- 19:18Speaker 1: to throw it to blind spot you. You literally cannot
- 19:21Speaker 1: see your target as well as you normally would.
- 19:24Speaker 3: I mean, I think you know, we've been saying this
- 19:27Speaker 3: for a while. There they on defense, they just didn't
- 19:31Speaker 3: really look like an AFC North, you know, defensive line,
- 19:34Speaker 3: it just wasn't. They didn't didn't have big people. Had
- 19:38Speaker 3: they had good people, solid people, but it just doesn't.
- 19:40Speaker 4: This is a big is Paul Brown said, this is
- 19:42Speaker 4: a big man's game.
- 19:44Speaker 3: And I think you know, Dexter, I know, getting off
- 19:49Speaker 3: the bus isn't a isn't a isn't a statistic, but.
- 19:56Speaker 1: You do.
- 19:56Speaker 3: But when you look at tape and stuff like that,
- 19:59Speaker 3: which these guys do. You know, now they've got with
- 20:01Speaker 3: Allen and with Jonathan Allen and Dexter, you know they
- 20:06Speaker 3: look like an AFC North middle.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Yeah, it may not be getting off the bus, but
- 20:11Speaker 1: certainly when teams are doing their pregame warm ups and
- 20:13Speaker 1: you look to the other side of the field and
- 20:15Speaker 1: you see a guy like Dexter Lawrence that registers.
- 20:17Speaker 4: Yeah, the bus isn't gonna run over with a guy
- 20:19Speaker 4: like Dexter.
- 20:21Speaker 1: All right, while you were on vacation, I talked to
- 20:24Speaker 1: some of your fellow Beat writers and I issued all
- 20:28Speaker 1: of them the same set of five questions. And you
- 20:31Speaker 1: were not able to participate in that particular podcast, but
- 20:34Speaker 1: I want to give you the opportunity to answer those
- 20:36Speaker 1: five questions as well. So question number one, this is
- 20:40Speaker 1: I have to slightly rephrase it for you, but what
- 20:43Speaker 1: was your biggest question going into this training camp.
- 20:46Speaker 7: I'm sure these guys did better than me, but I
- 20:49Speaker 7: will say I guess it's not really My biggest question
- 20:54Speaker 7: is will the defense put pressure on the quarterback?
- 20:58Speaker 4: I'm talking about you know, I think they blitzed.
- 21:02Speaker 3: They blitzed less than anybody in the league last year,
- 21:05Speaker 3: and I'm wondering if they're gonna if we're just gonna
- 21:07Speaker 3: see more pressure packages. I think we did at the
- 21:10Speaker 3: at at the end of last season. I think we
- 21:12Speaker 3: began to see that the second year.
- 21:14Speaker 4: In al Golden system.
- 21:16Speaker 3: The rookie linebackers now a year ended at Belt A
- 21:21Speaker 3: terrific UH signal caller in the middle of the field
- 21:24Speaker 3: and Brian Cook, we're going to see you know.
- 21:27Speaker 4: That blitz percentage you know, go up.
- 21:30Speaker 3: I think it, you know, probably should, but you know again,
- 21:33Speaker 3: I guess we won't say and we're certainly.
- 21:34Speaker 4: Not going to see it in the preseason. Al won't
- 21:36Speaker 4: unveil it.
- 21:37Speaker 3: But that's my biggest thing kind of coming in is, uh,
- 21:42Speaker 3: we're going to see this pressure ramp up.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Interesting because the pressure on the quarterback obviously has to
- 21:48Speaker 1: get better. That has not been good enough for several years.
- 21:51Speaker 1: If they could get up with four guys, I'm sure
- 21:53Speaker 1: Al would love it, but it also doesn't hurt to
- 21:57Speaker 1: confused quarterbacks and scare offense of lines by sending more
- 22:01Speaker 1: than four.
- 22:01Speaker 4: I mean, I think this is I think this is
- 22:03Speaker 4: the NFL. I mean it's great.
- 22:04Speaker 3: I mean Philly Seattle, you know they get there with four,
- 22:08Speaker 3: but they also got more than four guys, and they
- 22:10Speaker 3: also have different looks.
- 22:12Speaker 4: You know, Mike McDonald what he does in Seattle, a.
- 22:14Speaker 3: Lot of that is uh, you know, guys dropping in
- 22:17Speaker 3: and out and uh and in faking blitzes or you know,
- 22:21Speaker 3: there's the there's the there's the Mike Zimmer you know, uh,
- 22:25Speaker 3: double a gap, you know, the double a gap blitz
- 22:28Speaker 3: that it's uh So, I think you know it's it's
- 22:31Speaker 3: maybe he can rush for with four, but it's gotta
- 22:34Speaker 3: be four different guys.
- 22:36Speaker 4: All right.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Who is your breakout player in twenty six?
- 22:40Speaker 3: I think it's gonna be a pair. I think it's
- 22:43Speaker 3: gonna be the linebackers Catter and Knight.
- 22:47Speaker 4: Uh.
- 22:48Speaker 3: You know, they've got they've got a year und of
- 22:49Speaker 3: it belt in the system, and they've got you know,
- 22:52Speaker 3: I mean, they've got a far better defensive lineup front,
- 22:57Speaker 3: not only Lawrence and Allen, but also you've got a
- 23:01Speaker 3: veteran edge guy in Mafe coming over and a ascending
- 23:06Speaker 3: Miles Murphy. So I just think that defensive line is
- 23:10Speaker 3: gonna make them better. And I think you've got a
- 23:13Speaker 3: von Bellish safety and Cook who's.
- 23:16Speaker 4: Going to help them behind them?
- 23:19Speaker 3: And I think, you know, uh, people are you know,
- 23:22Speaker 3: they really took a lot of heat.
- 23:23Speaker 4: Of these guys. Really that good? Was Cat or over drafted?
- 23:27Speaker 4: You know? Was Night over drafted?
- 23:28Speaker 3: Did they reach for Night because they needed a linebacker?
- 23:31Speaker 4: You know?
- 23:31Speaker 3: I think, uh, I think, uh, life looks a lot
- 23:35Speaker 3: different when you get when when they when you put
- 23:37Speaker 3: him in the middle of this defense than when you
- 23:39Speaker 3: put him in the middle of the of last year's.
- 23:42Speaker 1: I'm glad you mentioned Barrett Carter because he looked different
- 23:44Speaker 1: to me yesterday. And I don't even mean on the field. Obviously,
- 23:47Speaker 1: he's communicating more. He's got a year in the system
- 23:51Speaker 1: under his belt, but even just walking around, he looks
- 23:54Speaker 1: more mature. He looks like like his posture is better
- 23:58Speaker 1: because he's more confident. He just looks different.
- 24:01Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 24:02Speaker 3: Alpha again, You're talking about an alpha guy. That's why
- 24:04Speaker 3: they went and got him, because you know, they just
- 24:07Speaker 3: they just as college coaches, people down there just raved
- 24:09Speaker 3: about him.
- 24:10Speaker 4: And you know him, You've talked to him. He's a
- 24:11Speaker 4: great kid.
- 24:12Speaker 3: And uh, you know, I people will.
- 24:16Speaker 4: Pooh pooh the one hundred tackles.
- 24:18Speaker 3: Both Katter and Lawrence had one hundred tackles. Right to me,
- 24:20Speaker 3: it shows that they can play, that they can play
- 24:23Speaker 3: in the league. And uh, I think, uh, you know
- 24:26Speaker 3: Catterer is uh, he's.
- 24:27Speaker 4: A budding captain.
- 24:29Speaker 3: I think, uh and uh yeah, I mean I think, uh,
- 24:32Speaker 3: I think a lot of guys looked a little bit.
- 24:34Speaker 4: More more relaxed.
- 24:36Speaker 3: Uh, Dylan Fairchild, I think, for one, you know, like
- 24:40Speaker 3: they say Howdy between the first and second year is
- 24:42Speaker 3: your biggest jump, right?
- 24:44Speaker 1: I think that's especially to at linebacker, and Al Golden
- 24:47Speaker 1: mentioned those hundred tackles a lot, so it's certainly something
- 24:49Speaker 1: that he thinks is significant of what they were able
- 24:52Speaker 1: to do as rookies.
- 24:54Speaker 4: Who is your.
- 24:55Speaker 1: Mitch Tinsley this year, that long shot who winds up
- 24:58Speaker 1: making a contribution.
- 25:00Speaker 3: I'm gonna go with a corner of Braylan Luxe, who
- 25:04Speaker 3: was a practice squad guy last year, was called up
- 25:07Speaker 3: for the last three games and he played in the
- 25:09Speaker 3: last two productive.
- 25:11Speaker 4: Five ten one eighty runs.
- 25:15Speaker 3: You know, he's five to ten, he's lean, you know,
- 25:18Speaker 3: he's the kind of corner they like. Played a lot
- 25:21Speaker 3: of football in college, twenty one games at Texas Tech.
- 25:25Speaker 3: He started at twenty two games at Fresno where he
- 25:29Speaker 3: played for old friend Kevin Coyle, longtime secondary coach who
- 25:35Speaker 3: had two stints with.
- 25:36Speaker 4: The Bengals, so you know he schooled in the NFL.
- 25:40Speaker 4: Was productive.
- 25:40Speaker 3: I thought in preseason last year he ended up he
- 25:42Speaker 3: had two passes, defense, had about eight to nine tackles,
- 25:46Speaker 3: and Chuck Burks likes the Bengals cornerbacks coach.
- 25:50Speaker 4: Now obviously I have to go out there and prove it.
- 25:53Speaker 3: But I think Lux is the kind of guy, maybe
- 25:56Speaker 3: in Tinsley fashion, would come off the bench and make
- 25:58Speaker 3: a play for you. Maybe if a guy goes down
- 26:01Speaker 3: for a couple of plays, you know, kind of like
- 26:03Speaker 3: Mitch comes in does something that helps you.
- 26:07Speaker 1: What must the Bengals do to win the AFC North.
- 26:12Speaker 3: I think that it's an interesting, uh, you know, it's
- 26:16Speaker 3: an interesting situation here. First time I can remember, there's
- 26:19Speaker 3: no John Hobaugh coaching the Ravens. There's no Bill Cower
- 26:23Speaker 3: or Mike Tomlin coach and the Steelers.
- 26:26Speaker 4: The Browns are in flux again. And you know, I.
- 26:29Speaker 3: Think, to me, this is an opportunity for the Bengals
- 26:32Speaker 3: to force their will, to force their game on the
- 26:35Speaker 3: rest of the division. You know, now mccathey's a Pittsburgh guy,
- 26:39Speaker 3: but he hasn't really coached in a in a in
- 26:42Speaker 3: a divisional game in the AFC North, now, I know,
- 26:45Speaker 3: you know, I think it's a little bit different here,
- 26:47Speaker 3: but I think, you know, for years it's been Pittsburgh.
- 26:52Speaker 3: Baltimore is dictated the way the game is played with
- 26:54Speaker 3: defensive head coaches. I think the Bengals had a chance
- 26:57Speaker 3: to shape the division. Make guys them you know, oh,
- 27:01Speaker 3: you know, you're gonna have to score thirty. So I
- 27:04Speaker 3: think they have a chance here with the transition with
- 27:07Speaker 3: the coaches, that Zach has an opportunity here to you know, hey,
- 27:12Speaker 3: this is this is our division. And so I think
- 27:15Speaker 3: in order to sweep the North, I think put their
- 27:19Speaker 3: will on these guys and say, hey, you're gonna play.
- 27:21Speaker 4: You're gonna play our game.
- 27:23Speaker 1: How strange is Week three going to be without Mike
- 27:25Speaker 1: Tomlin on the other sideline?
- 27:27Speaker 4: Yeah? Really strange?
- 27:28Speaker 6: I mean, uh, and.
- 27:30Speaker 3: Cal to think about it, that's all that since since
- 27:34Speaker 3: nineteen ninety two, it's been it's just been cow and
- 27:37Speaker 3: Tomlin and it's uh, you know, and you're throwing to
- 27:40Speaker 3: the mix that mccathy and Rogers are probably going to
- 27:43Speaker 3: be throwing the ball around. So there's gonna be a
- 27:46Speaker 3: different feel in Pittsburgh. That's gonna be weird too, because
- 27:49Speaker 3: usually you're going in there no one. In the words
- 27:52Speaker 3: of the great Dave Lapham, it's gonna be an AFC slobynarca.
- 27:56Speaker 3: But with mccathy and Zach calling the plays, with Roger's
- 27:59Speaker 3: and Borough, you know, we might be cean oiler's Bengals
- 28:03Speaker 3: game from the eighties.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Well, hopefully it's like one where Sam White used to
- 28:07Speaker 1: run it up on Jerry Glenville.
- 28:09Speaker 4: That would be nice. I would take a sixty one
- 28:11Speaker 4: to seven.
- 28:11Speaker 1: Me too, with like an onside kick with a minute
- 28:14Speaker 1: to go. All right. Fifth and final question, what is
- 28:17Speaker 1: your sizzling hot take? You have to be a sports
- 28:21Speaker 1: talk radio host here. What's your sizzling hot take about
- 28:24Speaker 1: the upcoming season?
- 28:25Speaker 4: To say Joe.
- 28:26Speaker 3: Burrow is going to be the league MVP. That's boring, right,
- 28:29Speaker 3: that's not sizzling enough.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Nobody else said it, So I will say that.
- 28:33Speaker 3: Well, I'll say, okay, how about these two things. I'll
- 28:37Speaker 3: statify Burrow is going to be the league NFL MVP
- 28:41Speaker 3: in Jordan Battle is going to lead the NFL in interceptions.
- 28:44Speaker 1: Because that's the grill sizzling in the background.
- 28:50Speaker 3: Yeah, that's somebody coming to take me to the home.
- 28:55Speaker 3: What don Rick will say, it's okay, But I'm ill. Well,
- 28:59Speaker 3: I think that because here's the thing. Hear me out
- 29:01Speaker 3: on this, Like I said, Ryan Cook is a von
- 29:04Speaker 3: bellish savvy guy back there, and I think that's gonna
- 29:08Speaker 3: leak over into Battle.
- 29:09Speaker 4: I think Battle's kind of been struggled, not struggling.
- 29:12Speaker 3: I think he's a very I think he's a good player,
- 29:14Speaker 3: a solid player, but I think he's been caught in
- 29:16Speaker 3: the transitions of coordinators of of you know, is Vaughn here,
- 29:21Speaker 3: is he not here? So he kind of so now boom,
- 29:23Speaker 3: he's here. He's the man, and he got cooked next
- 29:27Speaker 3: to him, and I just think, uh, you know, that's
- 29:30Speaker 3: that's going to open up.
- 29:32Speaker 4: I think that will make Battle a better player.
- 29:34Speaker 3: And he's proven to be kind of has a nose
- 29:37Speaker 3: for the ball. I now called the Jordan Battle of
- 29:40Speaker 3: Ohio because I think he's got I think three of
- 29:42Speaker 3: his interceptions have to come against Cleveland, and you know
- 29:45Speaker 3: that's in the David Fulture mold getting all your getting
- 29:48Speaker 3: your key picks against division guys, David Fulcher, Reggie Nelson.
- 29:53Speaker 3: David Fulcher had six picks against the Oils and Warren
- 29:55Speaker 3: Moon in his career. We all know Reggie Nelson picked
- 29:58Speaker 3: Big Ben six times James. So Battle's already got a
- 30:02Speaker 3: got a.
- 30:02Speaker 4: Uh, he's already keen on Cleveland.
- 30:05Speaker 3: So give him a couple, give him a couple more,
- 30:07Speaker 3: give him a give him.
- 30:08Speaker 4: A pair against Baltimore.
- 30:10Speaker 3: Uh and Pittsburgh gets his maybe get a hat trick
- 30:14Speaker 3: against the Browns and boom he's leaning the NFL and picks.
- 30:18Speaker 1: Hat trick would tie the team record for a single
- 30:20Speaker 1: game if it came in a single game. All Right,
- 30:22Speaker 1: that is a sizzling hot take. You understood the assignment.
- 30:25Speaker 1: I appreciate that this was fun. Let's get ready to
- 30:27Speaker 1: go out in the field for day two.
- 30:29Speaker 3: Ordy, you're the man I have to say, allow, of course,
- 30:31Speaker 3: to carry Hopson, one of your biggest fans.
- 30:34Speaker 6: Hope the boys and Danny are doing well.
- 30:37Speaker 1: One quick follow up from my conversation with Jeff. At
- 30:41Speaker 1: that time, we did not have a prognosis on Shamar Stewart,
- 30:45Speaker 1: but Zach Taylor shared positive news after the Bengals second practice.
- 30:50Speaker 4: All Right, smart.
- 30:50Speaker 8: Steward yesterday fortunately avoided major injury. So he hi brigs
- 30:54Speaker 8: into his knee. It'll be several weeks. Hard to pinpoint
- 30:57Speaker 8: exactly how much in a trade camp. That'll be very
- 31:01Speaker 8: fortunate because it obviously looks bad and I was put
- 31:03Speaker 8: a lot of work, so hard see him go down
- 31:06Speaker 8: like that. But the good news is we'll be getting
- 31:08Speaker 8: it back to the.
- 31:09Speaker 1: Revelator Zach used the term several weeks, which I typically
- 31:12Speaker 1: think of in the three to six range. If that
- 31:15Speaker 1: turns out to be the case, Shamar should be available
- 31:18Speaker 1: for the bulk of the season. That's going to do
- 31:21Speaker 1: it for this episode of the Bengals Booth Podcast, brought
