Latest / Halo Territory: A Los Angeles Angels Podcast / BROOMS OUT: Angels are swept by Mariners despite strong starting pitching
Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Well, Hey Angel fans, and welcome back to Halo Territory
- 0:11Speaker 1: with Mike D. Giovanna from Early Times Baseball writer and
- 0:14Speaker 1: Mark Trumbo, the former Angel slugger.
- 0:17Speaker 2: How you doing today, Mark, I'm doing great. What's going
- 0:21Speaker 2: on with you?
- 0:22Speaker 1: Well, just trying to get over a sweep in Seattle.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Boy rough week for the Angel up in the Pacific Northwest,
- 0:29Speaker 1: three games with a day off in between, and they
- 0:32Speaker 1: were swept by the Mariners, despite the fact that Walbert Arena,
- 0:37Speaker 1: Sam and and Terra Junior and Sam Bachman limited the
- 0:40Speaker 1: Mariners to two hits on Thursday night, very well pitched
- 0:44Speaker 1: game all around. Seattle scored the game's only run on
- 0:47Speaker 1: Urania's bases loaded walk in the sixth inning. His pitch
- 0:51Speaker 1: count at the time when the Mariners loaded the basis
- 0:54Speaker 1: it was at ninety five. This is a twenty two
- 0:56Speaker 1: year old right hander, mind you, rookie, and manager Kurt
- 1:00Speaker 1: Suzuki leaves them in the game. Even though lefty Samyn
- 1:04Speaker 1: Terry is warm in the bullpen. You have Josh Nayler
- 1:06Speaker 1: coming up, the left handed hitter, switch hitting cal Rally
- 1:09Speaker 1: coming up.
- 1:10Speaker 3: What does your ring to do?
- 1:11Speaker 1: He strikes out Nailor on three pitches very impressive. But Raley,
- 1:16Speaker 1: the former or the twenty twenty five MVP runner up,
- 1:21Speaker 1: draws a nine pitch walk to force in the game's
- 1:24Speaker 1: only run before Kurt went to the bullpen. What do
- 1:27Speaker 1: you think of that decision? Mark, to leave the kid
- 1:30Speaker 1: in in that situation.
- 1:33Speaker 3: I liked it.
- 1:34Speaker 2: I liked it at the time. I thought that We've
- 1:36Speaker 2: talked about it extensively. Walbert's calm and cool under pressure
- 1:41Speaker 2: seems to handle those instances really well. Some of the
- 1:45Speaker 2: bullpen guys have had their fair share of struggles, a
- 1:49Speaker 2: couple of them with the inherited runners, and Walbert seems
- 1:53Speaker 2: to thrive. Yes, this pitch out was getting up there,
- 1:57Speaker 2: but they really hadn't made any hard contact at all
- 2:00Speaker 2: so far. And I don't fault the decision at all.
- 2:04Speaker 2: You know, it ended up walking him. But cal Rally,
- 2:07Speaker 2: despite the poor season, he's actually been quite good at times,
- 2:11Speaker 2: usually in high leverage situations or late in the game,
- 2:14Speaker 2: So that was not terribly surprised, and he was able
- 2:17Speaker 2: to kind of piece that together when it really mattered.
- 2:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll go one step further and say I loved it.
- 2:22Speaker 1: You know, so much criticism from guys like Jim Palmer
- 2:26Speaker 1: and some of the old school guys, and it's Ward
- 2:28Speaker 1: and I think that we're just not pushing starting pitchers enough.
- 2:33Speaker 3: We're babying them too much.
- 2:35Speaker 1: And yeah, the end result wasn't great, but he's still
- 2:39Speaker 1: pitched a great game. And I look at stuff. You know,
- 2:41Speaker 1: yeah it was at ninety five pitches, but his stuff
- 2:44Speaker 1: was obviously still good to strike out and nail or
- 2:46Speaker 1: you know, a guy who makes contact usually pretty regularly
- 2:50Speaker 1: was very impressive. And that was just a grind out
- 2:52Speaker 1: at bat from Raleigh. Give him credit, but I really
- 2:56Speaker 1: like the move. I think Walbert will only benefit it
- 3:00Speaker 1: from that and the confidence the manager shows, and a
- 3:02Speaker 1: kid like that I think can can help in the
- 3:05Speaker 1: long run as well. Now, that ending actually started with
- 3:08Speaker 1: a JP Crawford double to right center was the first
- 3:11Speaker 1: hit of the game, and it's kind of a It
- 3:15Speaker 1: was right in the gap.
- 3:15Speaker 3: He split the gap. He hit a.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Similar almost ball in the exact same situation a couple
- 3:20Speaker 1: innings earlier that Josh Low caught, but on this one,
- 3:24Speaker 1: joshing to pull up right before making a final effort
- 3:28Speaker 1: at the ball and the ball drops look like to me,
- 3:31Speaker 1: he heard some Joe Adell footsteps. You know, I'm not
- 3:34Speaker 1: sure I can fault him for that, considering Joe's height
- 3:37Speaker 1: and wait, that would have been a nasty collision. But
- 3:40Speaker 1: do you think that ball should have made cot mark?
- 3:44Speaker 1: It's hard to say. I think that rem me of
- 3:49Speaker 1: as a kid watching the Dodgers. They had a near
- 3:51Speaker 1: no hitter that you might know the gentleman, he might
- 3:56Speaker 1: go to your gym. I'm not going to pick on anyone.
- 3:58Speaker 2: But didn't didn't lay out for a ball and ye
- 4:04Speaker 2: at the time, you know, I remember thinking, I think
- 4:05Speaker 2: the dive probably would have looks why it has been
- 4:08Speaker 2: better there this play in particular, I actually think Joe
- 4:11Speaker 2: Adele had the better chance to catch that baseball based
- 4:15Speaker 2: on where he was playing. Josh Lolok shaded slightly more
- 4:18Speaker 2: towards left center field and I went back. I watched
- 4:21Speaker 2: it many times. It looked like Joe's intent completely was
- 4:24Speaker 2: to be the backup. He took an angle to back
- 4:26Speaker 2: up the play. I think if he had gone directly.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Now you have to communicate because there could be a
- 4:33Speaker 2: very unfortunate situation with an a's minor leaguer best wishes
- 4:38Speaker 2: with a neck injury. Two big men you don't want
- 4:41Speaker 2: to dive into each other. That's the worst case scenario.
- 4:45Speaker 2: But with a no hitter on the line, it was
- 4:47Speaker 2: not a perfect game. No, it couldn't have been because
- 4:49Speaker 2: there was a lot of others with a no hitter.
- 4:53Speaker 2: I think that somebody should have got the uniform dirty
- 4:56Speaker 2: what they have made the play, I'm not certain neither
- 4:58Speaker 2: of them has. Although Low does run above average, you
- 5:02Speaker 2: don't have somebody out there like PCA who's able to
- 5:06Speaker 2: make some of those plays pretty routinely.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Yeah, for those wondering, Mark is alluding to one Sean Green,
- 5:13Speaker 1: who had a very fine career. Despite that play, Angels
- 5:16Speaker 1: still had a chance to tie the game in the
- 5:18Speaker 1: top of the seventh. They put two on with their
- 5:20Speaker 1: first two hits with no outs, orgees Solaire strikes out,
- 5:26Speaker 1: Wade Meckler flies a deep center that would have scored
- 5:29Speaker 1: the tying run had the runners advanced, And then in
- 5:33Speaker 1: the end, I think with a netto no Joe Adell
- 5:37Speaker 1: ground up, is Jorge Solaire maybe the worst guy to
- 5:42Speaker 1: have up in that in that situation, Yes, he could
- 5:45Speaker 1: hit a three run home run, but what are the
- 5:48Speaker 1: other options?
- 5:51Speaker 4: Well?
- 5:52Speaker 2: Or Hey, that last at bet one hundred and ten
- 5:54Speaker 2: point three exit velocity on that syn true, he gets
- 5:58Speaker 2: his HAPs in and well another show that covers the Angels,
- 6:06Speaker 2: they thought he should have put down a sack bunt
- 6:08Speaker 2: and totally valid. Jorgees put down exactly zero sack bunts
- 6:13Speaker 2: in his entire career. I don't even know what that
- 6:16Speaker 2: would look like. I doubt the whole league, not the
- 6:20Speaker 2: whole league, most of the league, especially the Angels. They
- 6:23Speaker 2: don't look good at bunning whatsoever. I don't know if
- 6:26Speaker 2: it's something that's just not I'm going to say it's
- 6:30Speaker 2: just not practice like it used to be. It's not
- 6:33Speaker 2: part of the current modern game. Giving away outs is
- 6:36Speaker 2: not trendy, and so when guys are called to do it,
- 6:39Speaker 2: it looks stabby, awkward, usually doesn't result in what you're
- 6:42Speaker 2: actually looking for. And with sol are there, you're just
- 6:46Speaker 2: hoping he runs into one. That's what he's up there for.
- 6:49Speaker 2: He's trying to go, you know, hit the ball hard,
- 6:52Speaker 2: and facing elite pitching doesn't always go the way of
- 6:57Speaker 2: the hitter.
- 6:58Speaker 3: Yeah, there was a situation.
- 6:59Speaker 1: I think forget what hitting last night were the Mariner
- 7:02Speaker 1: guy who came into play right fielding Wilson is his name.
- 7:05Speaker 1: He squares the bunch, puts his right hand up by
- 7:08Speaker 1: the label of the bat in his left.
- 7:10Speaker 3: Hand, right under his right hand.
- 7:12Speaker 1: I mean, I don't think that's how they teach you
- 7:14Speaker 1: how a bunch in little league, Babe, Ruth league, high school,
- 7:16Speaker 1: you know, minor leagues, big leagues. And he had no chance.
- 7:20Speaker 1: I was very surprised by that. And to me, yeah,
- 7:23Speaker 1: you don't ask Jorges soil there to bunt. You just
- 7:26Speaker 1: you're not gonna put a guy in a situation where
- 7:29Speaker 1: you almost know he's gonna fail. I would have had
- 7:31Speaker 1: a easier time if they had gone and maybe Walton
- 7:34Speaker 1: off the bench or I forget who else is on
- 7:36Speaker 1: the bench, but you certainly had guys on the bench
- 7:38Speaker 1: who could have gone in there and bunt Bunted. But
- 7:42Speaker 1: you know, then you're taking out your cleanup batter and
- 7:45Speaker 1: your your hitter who has a knack for hitting line
- 7:48Speaker 1: drives with an exit velocity of one hundred and ten.
- 7:51Speaker 1: So tough situation for Kurt. You know, he's not the
- 7:54Speaker 1: only manager putting these situations. But you're right, bunting is
- 7:59Speaker 1: a low lost art.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Now.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Seattle won Monday night six to two. George Kirby looked
- 8:05Speaker 1: very good that night for the Mariners, and then Seattle
- 8:07Speaker 1: won eight to two. And Tuesday night a game in
- 8:10Speaker 1: which Horace Jose Soriano threw five shutout innings before he
- 8:14Speaker 1: and Chase Silsa combined to give up five runs in
- 8:17Speaker 1: that six But I want to go back to the
- 8:19Speaker 1: top of the fifth inning that night, zero zero game,
- 8:23Speaker 1: Angels put two on and no outs. Logan o'happe, who's
- 8:26Speaker 1: been pretty good at the plate lately, tried the old
- 8:29Speaker 1: butcher boy play. When you fake a bunt, pull back,
- 8:34Speaker 1: swing away, he chops the ground of the third guy
- 8:37Speaker 1: feels it, touches third, and then Donovan Walton flies out,
- 8:42Speaker 1: Neto grounds out. Inning's over. What'd you think of that
- 8:46Speaker 1: decision to try that play at that time? Mark, what
- 8:50Speaker 1: did you call it?
- 8:51Speaker 3: Butcher boy?
- 8:52Speaker 1: That's what I remember my first year or two on
- 8:55Speaker 1: the Angels beat, and the Angels are actually pretty good
- 8:57Speaker 1: at that play. And Larry Boa, the third base coach
- 9:00Speaker 1: at the time, he used that term butcher boy players.
- 9:03Speaker 1: That was the first I had ever heard of it,
- 9:05Speaker 1: and they actually, I think they used it. Wayne used
- 9:08Speaker 1: it on the broadcast. If you were paying attention, mark
- 9:10Speaker 1: as you should.
- 9:12Speaker 3: Yeah, the butcher boy. If you square, you pull back.
- 9:16Speaker 2: We called it a splash slashes, but I know that's
- 9:20Speaker 2: a good one. Yeah, but I like that. I mean
- 9:22Speaker 2: that's all I ever heard. But okay, I got put
- 9:24Speaker 2: it in my back pocket. Why are you asking? Was
- 9:27Speaker 2: it a good player or just yeah?
- 9:29Speaker 1: On Logan's part, considering he probably has not bunted much
- 9:33Speaker 1: or fake bunted much in his career, I'm guessing.
- 9:37Speaker 2: He actually looks like he is able to lay one down.
- 9:41Speaker 2: His technique looks much better than many others. That play
- 9:45Speaker 2: is very effective if you can catch I mean the
- 9:48Speaker 2: corner infielders are terrified with a guy like that with
- 9:52Speaker 2: you know, a big strong guy with a high exit
- 9:55Speaker 2: velos coming, you know, with the ability to you know,
- 9:58Speaker 2: basically knock your teeth out. But in this instance it
- 10:02Speaker 2: did not work. The placement, you know, really wasn't that
- 10:06Speaker 2: great and the runners were unable to move over. So
- 10:09Speaker 2: the manufacturing, the thought process, I don't ate it. I
- 10:12Speaker 2: don't know if that was on his own or that
- 10:13Speaker 2: was I bet it was. I don't know how complex
- 10:18Speaker 2: the Angels signs are. We really never see hardly anything
- 10:23Speaker 2: hit and runs or otherwise, so I doubt they even
- 10:25Speaker 2: have that in the playbook. I think that was probably
- 10:27Speaker 2: on his own and thanking the thought process was right.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Just you know it didn't work out.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Yeah, we're gonna take a quick break for a word
- 10:35Speaker 1: from our sponsors. When we come back, we're going to
- 10:37Speaker 1: revisit Christian Moore's demotion to Triple A and an interesting
- 10:40Speaker 1: Q and A with the new interim GM John Moseylock.
- 10:44Speaker 1: We'll be right back.

- 11:49Speaker 1: And welcome back to Halo Territory with Mark Trumbo and
- 11:52Speaker 1: Mike dg Omano. Well, I got a little blowback from
- 11:56Speaker 1: the as justin Hollanders Seattle, GM called the Lunatic Fringe
- 12:01Speaker 1: on X for my take on Christian Moore's outbursts after
- 12:06Speaker 1: you got demoted the Triple A about a week ago. Now,
- 12:11Speaker 1: I thought it was an immature reaction at the time,
- 12:15Speaker 1: but you know, here's some of the reaction on Twitter,
- 12:18Speaker 1: and one was from Tory Hunter, who I have all
- 12:22Speaker 1: the utmost respect for. Christian Moore has fire. I would
- 12:27Speaker 1: rather have a player who is upset about going back
- 12:29Speaker 1: to the miners and a guy who says thanks for
- 12:31Speaker 1: the opportunity. Now you still have to perform at the
- 12:34Speaker 1: big league level, where Triple A will always be present.
- 12:41Speaker 3: What I.
- 12:44Speaker 1: What I want to express is that two things can
- 12:47Speaker 1: be true at the same time. Does Christian Moore have
- 12:49Speaker 1: every right to be ticked off about being demoted to
- 12:52Speaker 1: triple A?
- 12:53Speaker 3: Definitely?
- 12:54Speaker 1: But I went back and looked, even though he's had
- 12:56Speaker 1: only twenty at bats, he actually started five or seven
- 12:59Speaker 1: games from June eighteenth to twenty fourth, and he hit
- 13:04Speaker 1: two hundred and four for twenty with one RBIs, eleven
- 13:07Speaker 1: strikeouts and one walk in those games. To me, he
- 13:11Speaker 1: should be more ticked off that the Angels are jerking
- 13:13Speaker 1: him around a bit. We're talking about a first round
- 13:15Speaker 1: pick here in twenty four by moving him to left field,
- 13:18Speaker 1: a position he is clearly not comfortable at. Has already
- 13:22Speaker 1: made a few rough plays out there. That's what he
- 13:25Speaker 1: should be ticked off about. And to me, his outburst
- 13:28Speaker 1: was also a sign of immaturity because he did it
- 13:31Speaker 1: as he walked into a clubhouse full of a few
- 13:33Speaker 1: teammates and all.
- 13:34Speaker 3: The reporters, and it's just not a good look.
- 13:37Speaker 1: And you know, there's a lot of people who say, oh,
- 13:40Speaker 1: you know, he has every right to be ticked off.
- 13:45Speaker 1: But if Joe Adell intervenes and puts a lid on this,
- 13:51Speaker 1: you know, like right away, how is that appropriate to me?
- 13:54Speaker 1: You got to act professional in the clubhouse. This wasn't
- 13:57Speaker 1: the time or place. You do that stuff behind closed doors.
- 14:00Speaker 1: That's fine, you don't do it in front of a
- 14:02Speaker 1: bunch of reporters when you have the chance of you know,
- 14:05Speaker 1: it being reported as it was, and then you have
- 14:08Speaker 1: a reputation that's very hard to shake. What was your
- 14:10Speaker 1: takeaway from all that?
- 14:11Speaker 4: Mark?
- 14:13Speaker 2: I can see the arguments being made, the fire and passion.
- 14:19Speaker 2: I'm going to speak for myself, but of course I
- 14:21Speaker 2: love that. I mean, there's nothing worse than a guy
- 14:24Speaker 2: that doesn't have it, and it's very you know, if
- 14:27Speaker 2: they don't, those guys that don't have it very hard
- 14:30Speaker 2: to ever find it. Most major league players are high intensity,
- 14:36Speaker 2: ultra competitive, but with that comes you got to know
- 14:40Speaker 2: when to show restraint. I mean, I looked up some
- 14:44Speaker 2: famous incidents that happened in front of media. Kevin Brown
- 14:47Speaker 2: destroys the clubhouse in two thousand and four, Cole Hammils
- 14:51Speaker 2: and Jonathan Papalvon got into a huge, heated argument in
- 14:54Speaker 2: fourteen and Prince Fielder tried to storm into the Dodgers' clubhouse. Wow,
- 14:58Speaker 2: all of those things were miss with the media around it.
- 15:01Speaker 2: And that's that's what you get into a fight in
- 15:04Speaker 2: the dugout, or you get into a screaming match and
- 15:06Speaker 2: caught on TV. These things, you know, if people are
- 15:09Speaker 2: around to witness them, they're going to be written about.
- 15:12Speaker 2: There's as a player, you understand that had it been
- 15:16Speaker 2: need had it out like a zero shock, if it
- 15:19Speaker 2: was written about, it should be written about. I mean,
- 15:21Speaker 2: that's something that is right in front of everyone's eyes. Now,
- 15:25Speaker 2: as far as I mean, he's an excellent player, but
- 15:28Speaker 2: I think that there is a thought that because you're
- 15:31Speaker 2: a high first round pick, that there's a clear pathway
- 15:36Speaker 2: to the major leagues, that you're going to be kind
- 15:40Speaker 2: of gift wrapped a position at some point once you
- 15:42Speaker 2: get to double A or at least as I've always
- 15:44Speaker 2: understood it, the draft position is out the window. You
- 15:48Speaker 2: got to earn it. You got to go out there
- 15:50Speaker 2: and you got to beat somebody out. Now, what did
- 15:51Speaker 2: Christian Moore do in spring training? Well, you have one
- 15:55Speaker 2: seventy five and forty of bats, So that's not all that.
- 16:00Speaker 2: I'm strong. It's not worthy of a spot, you know,
- 16:03Speaker 2: I think is one of his best chances might have
- 16:05Speaker 2: been to make the team out of spring. The numbers
- 16:07Speaker 2: weren't good enough. He didn't do that lighting up in
- 16:10Speaker 2: Salt Lake. I think he's going to have an excellent future,
- 16:13Speaker 2: but I can understand why he's upset. I think the
- 16:17Speaker 2: only issue out of all this that I have is
- 16:20Speaker 2: the outburst towards the manager, which I see is disrespectful
- 16:25Speaker 2: and it's not something I would have done or had
- 16:29Speaker 2: you wanted to go that route. You got to do
- 16:30Speaker 2: it when no one's watching, and that includes your teammates
- 16:34Speaker 2: as well, because it really puts a friction. You know,
- 16:37Speaker 2: it's not your manager's got to either respond or not.
- 16:40Speaker 2: Kurt seemed like took the high road and said, you know,
- 16:43Speaker 2: he likes the fire, likes the energy, but I mean
- 16:46Speaker 2: it's also somebody showing up their skipper. And I agree
- 16:51Speaker 2: with Tory's comment. I can see all of it, but
- 16:55Speaker 2: I don't really think anyone's you know, it's just something
- 16:59Speaker 2: that happened. You know, we'll move beyond this, but I've
- 17:03Speaker 2: seen plenty of it before this one. You just did
- 17:05Speaker 2: it in front of the media.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Yeah, it reminds me of a phrase I've heard so
- 17:10Speaker 1: many times over the many years I've covered baseball. It
- 17:12Speaker 1: takes you five minutes to earn a reputation, or even
- 17:16Speaker 1: five seconds, and five years to a lifetime to rid
- 17:20Speaker 1: yourself of it.
- 17:21Speaker 3: And you know.
- 17:22Speaker 1: This kid's got a lot of pressure on them already,
- 17:24Speaker 1: and I don't you know, to me, it's not going
- 17:26Speaker 1: to help them if you have a reputation of, you know,
- 17:28Speaker 1: being a hot head or wherever you want to call it.
- 17:31Speaker 1: Here's some of the other reactions I got, and these
- 17:33Speaker 1: are the more printable ones.
- 17:35Speaker 3: That's a terrible take.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Imagine you finally get a shot at achieving the dream
- 17:39Speaker 1: you've worked for your entire life, only to be played
- 17:41Speaker 1: out of position and given a handful of the bats.
- 17:44Speaker 1: That's not immaturity, that's passion. He had every right to
- 17:47Speaker 1: be frustrated. I don't disagree with that take. I agree
- 17:51Speaker 1: with it. And then I did get some criticism a
- 17:55Speaker 1: couple of things along these lines. Way to spill out
- 18:00Speaker 1: things that should remain in closed doors. That seems immature
- 18:03Speaker 1: to even talk about it. And I just want to
- 18:06Speaker 1: remind fans that this incident was actually first brought up
- 18:12Speaker 1: I believe it was Chuck Richter from Angelswind dot com,
- 18:15Speaker 1: and this happened on a Friday night, after the game,
- 18:18Speaker 1: middle of the day Saturday, Saturday, he tweets, So, I'm
- 18:21Speaker 1: not seeing this anywhere else, but I heard that Christian
- 18:23Speaker 1: wore through a tantrum in the clubhouse last night and
- 18:26Speaker 1: had to be held back by Joe Adell. Not so
- 18:29Speaker 1: sure about that. Apparently he was notified that he's being
- 18:32Speaker 1: sent back to Salt Lake. Trying to confirm this else elsewhere,
- 18:36Speaker 1: but that's what I heard, So it wasn't like I
- 18:41Speaker 1: was revealing anything that wasn't already out there. And we
- 18:44Speaker 1: asked Kurt Suzuki about it before Saturday's game. He acknowledged it,
- 18:49Speaker 1: And by acknowledging it, you're basically saying, you know, at
- 18:53Speaker 1: that point it's fair game for people to write about.
- 18:56Speaker 1: So that's all I'm going to say about that and
- 18:59Speaker 1: anything further had on that mark or should we put.
- 19:02Speaker 3: It to bed?
- 19:03Speaker 2: They gave it to you pretty good. Usually, you know,
- 19:07Speaker 2: people with some weird goofy avatar and they like to
- 19:12Speaker 2: use gifts, and you know it's a part of the
- 19:16Speaker 2: deal with pro sports. You want to know why athletes
- 19:18Speaker 2: aren't really into it, Well, there you go. I'm not
- 19:23Speaker 2: one to take the platforms to voice my displeasure. If
- 19:27Speaker 2: I don't like something, I just move along. I think
- 19:31Speaker 2: somebody actually scorched me for that, not realizing it was
- 19:35Speaker 2: you who had said it and they were so sick
- 19:38Speaker 2: of watching me, And then I think deleted it because well,
- 19:42Speaker 2: I don't know, but I guess just you know, had
- 19:45Speaker 2: it locked and loaded, ready to pile on and and
- 19:48Speaker 2: any of these takes, especially with us, they get usually
- 19:52Speaker 2: chopped up and put out on other platforms, where other
- 19:57Speaker 2: shows not so much. They have a lot more latitude
- 20:01Speaker 2: to let it rip. I say anything remotely borderline, you know,
- 20:06Speaker 2: there it goes. So it's a tough tough line to
- 20:10Speaker 2: walk because we want to be you know, honest and candid,
- 20:13Speaker 2: but nobody's looking for uh, this s storm of nonsense. Also,
- 20:20Speaker 2: last night, saw Lake had six airs, Christian Moore had
- 20:23Speaker 2: three of them, and uh, Cayden Dana with with a
- 20:26Speaker 2: not so great start. So you know, the defense is
- 20:30Speaker 2: something that I think he's going to really need to
- 20:31Speaker 2: hone in on. That's a big part of the deal.
- 20:33Speaker 2: Obviously is a bat. Uh you know. Ever, he's known
- 20:36Speaker 2: for the hitting, so the bat's got to be there too.
- 20:39Speaker 2: But uh, you know, down on the farm, you got
- 20:41Speaker 2: to look the part and hopefully there's uh, you know,
- 20:44Speaker 2: the attitudes there. It's going to work hard, and you
- 20:46Speaker 2: never know, there could be a spot that opens up
- 20:48Speaker 2: in a in a day or two and he never
- 20:51Speaker 2: you know ever has to go back down. So that's
- 20:53Speaker 2: the mindset. I would probably say his best and put
- 20:56Speaker 2: the work and put your head down. Someone who's spent
- 20:58Speaker 2: a lot of years in the minor gigs and had
- 21:01Speaker 2: to scratch and claw and played out a position the
- 21:03Speaker 2: majority of my career, Sometimes you gotta do what you
- 21:06Speaker 2: gotta do.
- 21:07Speaker 3: Yeh.
- 21:08Speaker 1: Hey, we're gonna take one more break for word from
- 21:09Speaker 1: our sponsors. When we come back, we'll talk about the

- 22:17Speaker 1: He welcome back to Halo Territory with Mark Trumbo and
- 22:20Speaker 1: Mike dg Ovanna Well Ken Rosenthal, the Athletic did are
- 22:24Speaker 1: really nice? Q and A with John Mozaylac earlier in
- 22:27Speaker 1: the week. Two things stood out to me. The first
- 22:30Speaker 1: is a uh Mo as we'll call him, had a
- 22:34Speaker 1: two and a half hour meeting last week with owner
- 22:36Speaker 1: Artie Moreno and team president Molly Jolly, and when asked
- 22:40Speaker 1: by Ken if he has an understanding of Artie's vision
- 22:44Speaker 1: on how to write this franchise. Most said quote, I
- 22:47Speaker 1: definitely think there's going to be an opportunity to have
- 22:50Speaker 1: some autonomy in how we do it. And here's what
- 22:54Speaker 1: Ken had to say about this on the Foul Territory Network.
- 22:57Speaker 4: And the big thing for me, the big question was
- 23:00Speaker 4: and is will he have actual autonomy? Because that's always
- 23:05Speaker 4: been the question for Angels heads of baseball operations under Moreno.
- 23:10Speaker 4: What's different about Mozzaelock as opposed to Tony Reagan's and
- 23:13Speaker 4: Jerry Depoto and Billy Eppler and of course Perrymanazion is
- 23:19Speaker 4: he has experience coming into this job. Those guys I
- 23:22Speaker 4: just mentioned did not. Topoto had been an interim for
- 23:25Speaker 4: a couple of months, but that was it. Miszeylock is
- 23:28Speaker 4: a guy with some status in the game. He was
- 23:30Speaker 4: with the Cardinals for quite a long time. At the
- 23:33Speaker 4: time he left as president of Baseball Operations, was the
- 23:36Speaker 4: second longest tenured head of baseball ops in the game,
- 23:39Speaker 4: behind only Brian Cashman. So the question then is, Okay,
- 23:44Speaker 4: you hired this guy, are you gonna let him do
- 23:47Speaker 4: his job? Because the question with Moreno has always been,
- 23:50Speaker 4: or the criticism and the suspicion has always been he
- 23:53Speaker 4: does not let his heads of baseball operations do their jobs.
- 23:57Speaker 4: And Razzeloc basically said he has met with Moreno at
- 24:01Speaker 4: this point and he feels that Moreno is going to
- 24:04Speaker 4: rely a lot on him Jonas Alac for his vision
- 24:08Speaker 4: in kind of reversing the course of the franchise. We'll
- 24:12Speaker 4: see it always sounds great at the beginning a lot it.
- 24:15Speaker 4: That's true for players in their introductory news conference, it's
- 24:17Speaker 4: true for managers executives. They all's down great at the
- 24:20Speaker 4: press conference and in the interviews afterward. But we'll see
- 24:24Speaker 4: if indeed Mozellac is allowed to affect actual change or
- 24:29Speaker 4: if this will simply be with the Angels more of
- 24:32Speaker 4: the same.
- 24:34Speaker 1: Well as HT fans will remember, we raised this question
- 24:38Speaker 1: on our first show of the week when we talked
- 24:40Speaker 1: about this whole shake up in the general manager seat
- 24:43Speaker 1: of whether already Moreno, who's turning eighty this year, is
- 24:47Speaker 1: finally going to step back and stop meddling and let
- 24:53Speaker 1: somebody who knows what he's doing try to turn this
- 24:56Speaker 1: thing around. I saw this as a very encouraging sign
- 25:00Speaker 1: and as ken Ken made a good point. You know
- 25:01Speaker 1: already has hired pretty much first time general managers since,
- 25:06Speaker 1: you know, since Bill Stoneman stepped down. Did you see
- 25:10Speaker 1: this as a as a reason for encouragement Mark in
- 25:12Speaker 1: terms of maybe getting this thing turned around a little quicker?
- 25:17Speaker 2: I think so. The comments have all been high level
- 25:21Speaker 2: baseball expertise type answers, someone with a ton of knowledge,
- 25:27Speaker 2: a ton of experience, in an attitude that kind of
- 25:30Speaker 2: screams he doesn't, you know, really care at all if
- 25:34Speaker 2: they were to fire them tomorrow, which you know doesn't
- 25:37Speaker 2: necessarily Well, he doesn't need the job, wasn't actively looking
- 25:42Speaker 2: for the job. So I think he's almost the perfect candidate.
- 25:46Speaker 2: Most people would be thrilled to be a major league
- 25:48Speaker 2: general manager and do anything and everything they're asked to
- 25:53Speaker 2: keep that position. And he seems like, you know what,
- 25:56Speaker 2: I've done this a long time. If you want me
- 25:58Speaker 2: to come in here, I want my opinion and expertise.
- 26:02Speaker 2: You got to give me the opportunity to do my thing.
- 26:05Speaker 2: We'll see what happens. But I think that the Angels
- 26:08Speaker 2: are incapable hands and it is a good sign.
- 26:10Speaker 1: Yeah, I still think Artie's going to have the final
- 26:13Speaker 1: say over pretty much every major decision. But I do
- 26:16Speaker 1: think it just sounds like Mo would not have taken
- 26:20Speaker 1: that position if he didn't have some kind of autonomy
- 26:22Speaker 1: to do the things he thinks are necessary. So I think,
- 26:28Speaker 1: you know, a little less Lardy will be good for
- 26:30Speaker 1: the franchise and a little more Mo will be more
- 26:32Speaker 1: better for it. So the second thing I really thought
- 26:35Speaker 1: it was interesting was Ken Asmo, if this team needs
- 26:38Speaker 1: to rebuild obviously we have the trade deadline coming up
- 26:40Speaker 1: in a month now, and Mo said, no, I don't
- 26:44Speaker 1: think in this market you need to do that. This
- 26:47Speaker 1: team has resources now, it's just making sure we deploy
- 26:51Speaker 1: them correctly. And let's hear Ken elaborate a little bit
- 26:54Speaker 1: more about that answer on the Foul Territory Network.
- 26:58Speaker 4: There are some angels who could be traded at the deadline,
- 27:00Speaker 4: or who should be traded at the deadline. That is
- 27:03Speaker 4: the bigger overriding concern here. Will Mozelok be allowed to
- 27:08Speaker 4: do something that his predecessors were not, and that is
- 27:11Speaker 4: to trade players under team control beyond the season at hand?
- 27:17Speaker 4: So who are we talking about? Jose Siriano Sriana for one,
- 27:21Speaker 4: read debt meers Zach Neto, Joe Adell, all of these
- 27:24Speaker 4: guys under club control for at least one more year.
- 27:27Speaker 4: Adele won the two pitchers two and Neto three. And
- 27:33Speaker 4: if the Angels choose they can move some of these
- 27:35Speaker 4: guys and get big returns. Their farm system is not
- 27:38Speaker 4: very good. It is something they should do. It is
- 27:41Speaker 4: something I believe their fans would embrace a retooling, if
- 27:45Speaker 4: not an outright rebuilding. But when I asked Misaelic about that,
- 27:49Speaker 4: does this team need to rebuild? His answer was tell him.
- 27:52Speaker 4: He said no. He said, this is a team and
- 27:55Speaker 4: a big market, a team with resources, and they should
- 27:57Speaker 4: be able to compete.
- 28:00Speaker 1: Well, this response was a little more concerning for me.
- 28:05Speaker 1: You know, we address this whole topic on a show
- 28:07Speaker 1: a week or three ago, what they should do before
- 28:10Speaker 1: the trade deadline. I think Sam Plumb was on that episode.
- 28:13Speaker 1: We were all in agreement that they need to tear
- 28:15Speaker 1: this thing down do a major rebuild, which is something
- 28:18Speaker 1: they have never done. But we also had the Bob
- 28:20Speaker 1: Nightingale report right around that time that said already does
- 28:23Speaker 1: not want to trade Soriano Reed det Merz or Joe Adell.
- 28:28Speaker 1: I mean, there's still a month before the trade deadline. Yes,
- 28:31Speaker 1: I don't know that a lot of things can happen
- 28:33Speaker 1: between now and then, but some things can happen. Maybe
- 28:35Speaker 1: the Angels will get hot go on a run. This
- 28:37Speaker 1: league is as we talked about with Ryan Divish of
- 28:42Speaker 1: Seattle Times last show, It's just that the league. I've
- 28:46Speaker 1: never seen the American League in this sorry of a state.
- 28:48Speaker 1: I'm not saying the Angels are going to make a
- 28:50Speaker 1: run and you know, make the playoffs or win a division.
- 28:53Speaker 3: But what do you think? Mark?
- 28:57Speaker 1: Is that answer a little telling in terms of maybe
- 29:00Speaker 1: that Bob Knightingale report is true, and maybe Already just
- 29:04Speaker 1: doesn't have to have the stomach to tear it down.
- 29:08Speaker 2: Who knows.
- 29:09Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 29:11Speaker 2: They're only nine games back.
- 29:14Speaker 3: They were five and a half just from the wildcard.
- 29:16Speaker 1: If you according to Roger Lodge.
- 29:19Speaker 2: Right, they got I don't know, you know, Halo honks.
- 29:24Speaker 2: But I do know that they're fifteen and thirty on
- 29:28Speaker 2: the road. They're seventeen and twenty nine against above five
- 29:32Speaker 2: hundred teams a minus forty six run differential, So those
- 29:37Speaker 2: numbers aren't as flattering. I I don't think they probably,
- 29:43Speaker 2: I don't think Already wants to trade any of the
- 29:45Speaker 2: guys that are producing for the reasons that when we
- 29:50Speaker 2: had Jeff Flettron and you explained it as customers. If
- 29:54Speaker 2: that is your business model and you want to put
- 29:58Speaker 2: the best possible team on the field that you can
- 30:02Speaker 2: for entertainment, I think that there's a case that you
- 30:05Speaker 2: keep as much talent as you can, you strategically move
- 30:09Speaker 2: guys that maybe Paraza Yates if he's trending up. These
- 30:14Speaker 2: are just names of players that are veterans and not
- 30:19Speaker 2: part of the young core. So there's others too that
- 30:22Speaker 2: probably makes some sense, and hold on to the guys
- 30:25Speaker 2: that you do have and maybe spend I don't know
- 30:29Speaker 2: with the impending lockout. Will figure that out when it comes.
- 30:33Speaker 2: But this is all speculation. John Haymond, you know, he
- 30:36Speaker 2: says a lot of things. Yeah, so I don't know
- 30:42Speaker 2: what to make of it. I do think that Mo
- 30:45Speaker 2: his experience is going to be excellent. I'm more interested,
- 30:49Speaker 2: to be honest, in the draft which route they go
- 30:53Speaker 2: they're targeting higher upside young talent. I think that that
- 30:57Speaker 2: it would be good for the organization to target the
- 30:59Speaker 2: high I have ceiling players that can that that may
- 31:01Speaker 2: be coming from the high school crop trending away from
- 31:06Speaker 2: the safe college. Uh, you know, plug and play. But
- 31:12Speaker 2: we'll see how that goes. I wondering last night, just
- 31:15Speaker 2: one last thought, one of the Angels players got picked
- 31:20Speaker 2: off in kind of a pivotal spot, and I was
- 31:22Speaker 2: wondering what your thoughts were on that play and what kind.
- 31:25Speaker 3: Of happened there.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Yeah, it was at the eighth or ninth. I can't
- 31:27Speaker 1: remember Neto. Oh yeah, it was because Munyos was in
- 31:30Speaker 1: the game. I mean, I liked the idea of being
- 31:34Speaker 1: aggressive in that situation. Munyos is pretty slow to the plate,
- 31:37Speaker 1: even though he throws a hundred. I think Neto was
- 31:40Speaker 1: as good as a guy to steal second. You know,
- 31:45Speaker 1: I don't know that Munyos has a great move. I
- 31:47Speaker 1: think Neto just you know, he got a little antsy
- 31:50Speaker 1: and left a little early and got picked off. In hindsight,
- 31:54Speaker 1: what Shanwell. Shanwell followed with a hit and you know
- 31:59Speaker 1: the ending that hit too to layer of that hit
- 32:01Speaker 1: two might have scored him from second, so yeah, or
- 32:05Speaker 1: it's definitely have scored him third.
- 32:07Speaker 3: Obviously, I don't know.
- 32:08Speaker 4: Mark.
- 32:10Speaker 1: We once again we criticized Netto for a lot on
- 32:12Speaker 1: this show. I mean, he's trying to make an aggressive play.
- 32:16Speaker 1: You know, how would Mike Sosha have responded? You know,
- 32:18Speaker 1: in that situation, Socia always stressed if you're gonna miss
- 32:22Speaker 1: make a mistake, make it with being aggressive, don't play
- 32:25Speaker 1: with fear. That's a tough situation. He's trying to get
- 32:29Speaker 1: a great jump. I guess I didn't have as much
- 32:31Speaker 1: a problem with it as you might, but let's hear
- 32:34Speaker 1: you your take on it. For the final word, I.
- 32:38Speaker 2: Don't have one baseball play, you know, playing hard and
- 32:44Speaker 2: just wanted to see what you thought. We didn't cover
- 32:47Speaker 2: it earlier. You know, it was a bigger part of
- 32:49Speaker 2: the game, and you know the Angels have a Boston
- 32:54Speaker 2: team coming in. That's I don't know if Contraras's suspension
- 32:58Speaker 2: will begin tonight. If the field, yeah, I think they
- 33:01Speaker 2: are okay, so he will be in there. Their offense
- 33:04Speaker 2: is ranked very poorly. They have the least amount of
- 33:09Speaker 2: home runs in the big leagues. They do have some
- 33:11Speaker 2: decent starting pitching, but another team with a lousy record,
- 33:15Speaker 2: So this would be a good time for the Angels
- 33:16Speaker 2: to take two of three and one last thing. Nolan
- 33:21Speaker 2: single last night extended the Angels hit streak to four
- 33:24Speaker 2: two and nineteen games since September twelfth, nineteen ninety nine.
- 33:29Speaker 2: That's the longest active streak in the major leagues.
- 33:32Speaker 1: And I witnessed the last no hit or to be
- 33:34Speaker 1: thrown against the Angels. It was on September eleventh, nineteen
- 33:37Speaker 1: ninety nine, the infamous Eric Milton game, where Joe Madden
- 33:43Speaker 1: started a lineup of Triple A guys essentially, and he
- 33:46Speaker 1: refused to pinchhit anybody. He was determined not to give
- 33:51Speaker 1: all his regulars a rest, and Eric Milton, who I
- 33:54Speaker 1: believe had an era in the sevens at the time,
- 33:57Speaker 1: through what I called the most effortless no hitter in
- 33:59Speaker 1: baseball history. That's the way it goes sometimes. Good on
- 34:04Speaker 1: them for keeping that streak alive. It's pretty impressive. So
- 34:06Speaker 1: we're gonna close the show with that. Hey, thanks for watching,
- 34:09Speaker 1: Thanks for tuning in. We appreciate the support, and we'll
- 34:13Speaker 1: please like and subscribe. We'll see you next time on
- 34:15Speaker 1: Halo Territory.
