- 0:01SPEAKER_00: A reading from Scripture, Genesis chapter 15, verses 12 through 21.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: As the sun was setting,
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Abram fell into a deep sleep, and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Then the Lord said to him,
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: Know for certain that for four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: a country not their own, and that they will be enslaved and mistreated there.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves,
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: and afterwards they will come out with great possessions.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: You, however, will go to your ancestors in peace and be buried at a good old age.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here,
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: When the sun had set and darkness had fallen,
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: On that day,
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: the Lord made a covenant with Abraham and said,
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: We live in a world governed by contracts.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: From cell phone plans to apartment leases,
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: A contract is built on a simple premise, mutual distrust.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: It establishes strict boundaries,
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: outlines what you own me and what I own you,
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: and includes a quick exit strategy if either party fails to deliver.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Ultimately, a contract protects an asset or an interest.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: But God doesn't do business with us through contracts.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: Instead, God invites us into a covenant.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: A promise based on relationships, and relationships are built on trust.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: A contract says, I will perform if you perform.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: A covenant says, I am yours, and you are mine, even if it costs me everything.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: This distinction changes how we view God's justice.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: If we treat our faith like an institutional contract,
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: we start viewing God's justice as purely mechanical.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Like a celestial courtroom or a corporate compliance department.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: We assume sin is just a broken rule and justice is simply a penalty to be collected.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: But God's justice is fundamentally relational, not institutional.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: When humanity fractures a covenant,
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: God's anchor isn't the cold irritation of a bureaucrat enforcing policy.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: It is the deep, grieving sorrow
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: God's grief is displayed most clearly in the Bible through the words of
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: the minor prophets, the ones towards the end of the Old Testament.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: In Ezekiel and Hosea,
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: God uses the language of a broken marriage,
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: not a broken legal argument, to describe how sin hurts God.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: God's heart breaks,
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: and the anger we sometimes see God display is because our sinful hearts break
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: the bond of love and destroys relationships.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Therefore,
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: God's justice isn't satisfied by merely checking the legal box or balancing
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: a spreadsheet of debt.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Divine justice is driven by a passionate desire to restore what was broken.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: The ultimate proof of this relational justice is the cross.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: In a contract, if one side defaults, the contract is nullified and the parties walk away.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: But when we defaulted on our covenant, God did not walk away.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Instead,
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: God willingly stepped into the brokenness through an act of love,
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: not to punish, but to restore.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Jesus didn't die just to satisfy an institutional technicality.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: He died to reset the relational fallout of our betrayal and to seal a new covenant
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: through his willing sacrifice.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: So today, remember you are not a client keeping a contract with a distant institution.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: You are a child in a covenant with a loving Father.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: God's justice doesn't look for reasons to disqualify you.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: It is actively working to restore, protect, and hold fast to you.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: How does the understanding of the difference between a contract
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: and covenant change how you experience God,
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: both the blessings and the needed corrections?
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: What is one relationship which you might be able to restore through mutual sacrifice?
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: Join me in prayer.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: Lord, free us from the belief that our worth is measured by what we accomplish.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: Teach us to stop believing that our importance and value are attached to how tired
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: or overly busy we are.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: Help us create spaces where we can rest.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: May our rhythms reflect the freedom you have given us and may our lives bear witness
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: to your kingdom of grace rather than the demands of endless production.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: Amen.
