- 0:20Speaker 1: or the world. And we will have great guests. We
- 0:22Speaker 1: have a great guest again today, but of course you're
- 0:25Speaker 1: going to hear plenty of opinions from me too. But
- 0:27Speaker 1: it is your chance to speak up and sound off.
- 0:30Speaker 1: You can send your emails to comment at kfab dot
- 0:33Speaker 1: com or you can call us at four oh two
- 0:35Speaker 1: five five eight eleven ten. We are happy that you
- 0:38Speaker 1: are with us. Mary Barrett, Welcome. Mary Barrett is back
- 0:42Speaker 1: with us today. Welcome Mary Gosh.
- 0:43Speaker 2: I'm glad to be here.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Well, I'm glad that you are here too. And you know,
- 0:47Speaker 1: just if they didn't listen to the last time you
- 0:50Speaker 1: were here, which is right after the primary. Mary is
- 0:53Speaker 1: a lifelong Democrat, she was and now she is an independent.
- 0:57Speaker 1: I remember I took a quote that you said a
- 0:59Speaker 1: long time ago, Irish, I'm Catholic and I'm a Democrat
- 1:03Speaker 1: until now in a teeny bit chubby but there, I
- 1:07Speaker 1: wasn't gonna mention that I know, but I have to. Well, no,
- 1:11Speaker 1: but I tell you have talked about the Democrat Party
- 1:15Speaker 1: losing sight of its values. And you know you are
- 1:18Speaker 1: as you said, you have been around a long time.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Your dad, Frank Barrett, really got you into politics many
- 1:24Speaker 1: many years ago. He was an attorney. He has since
- 1:27Speaker 1: passed away, But boy, the Barretts are Barrett's Barleycorn Pub
- 1:32Speaker 1: and grill down on Levenworth. Tell the listeners your relationship
- 1:37Speaker 1: with the Kavanaughs, just so they know, Well, we kind.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Of grew up with them in politics.
- 1:41Speaker 3: I mean the kids were a little bit younger than
- 1:43Speaker 3: I was, but we grew up with all the Kavanaughs,
- 1:45Speaker 3: and John and Kate were just wonderful friends, and their
- 1:49Speaker 3: kids became great friends. And I just had such a
- 1:53Speaker 3: respect for Johnny Kavanaugh when he ran. He is smart,
- 1:58Speaker 3: he's kind, he gets it. He's got a voting record,
- 2:02Speaker 3: you know, I think the voting records are a really
- 2:04Speaker 3: important thing. And Denise Powell has not won, she hasn't
- 2:09Speaker 3: taken a vote, and when you listen to her, it's
- 2:11Speaker 3: as though she's she's run the she's run.
- 2:14Speaker 2: All of Omaha politics. It's just not true.
- 2:17Speaker 1: And you know I will back that up because Mary,
- 2:20Speaker 1: you know I have been in a campaign. I've been
- 2:23Speaker 1: elected in a campaign nine times, so you I won seven,
- 2:28Speaker 1: I lost two, but if you consider the primaries, it's
- 2:31Speaker 1: eighteen times. I was on the ballot, but I served
- 2:34Speaker 1: for mayor for twelve. Everybody knows that I was around Omaha.
- 2:38Speaker 1: I was involved in everything. I was attending a lot
- 2:42Speaker 1: of events. I worked with the nonprofits. I had never
- 2:46Speaker 1: heard of Denise Powell, and yet you know with her commercials,
- 2:49Speaker 1: she first started out with being a pod mom and
- 2:53Speaker 1: then all of a sudden she has been the self
- 2:55Speaker 1: proclaimed leader in Omaha for years and I have never
- 3:00Speaker 1: heard of her, and now many people are saying that too.
- 3:03Speaker 1: And yet she I think she was the founder of
- 3:05Speaker 1: Women to Run and that I scratched my head too,
- 3:09Speaker 1: because I'm thinking, here is somebody who has never won
- 3:12Speaker 1: run for anything is trying to teach other people how
- 3:15Speaker 1: to run for political office. Didn't make sense to me
- 3:18Speaker 1: at all. But let's talk about this past weekend. If
- 3:23Speaker 1: we could. I talked a bit about it yesterday. Derek Odin,
- 3:26Speaker 1: who is a consultant for Brinker Harding's campaign, is a
- 3:29Speaker 1: niece friend who is Denise Powell's opponent. And I will
- 3:33Speaker 1: start out by saying too, I have asked Denise Palell
- 3:36Speaker 1: if she will be on this show, I will give
- 3:38Speaker 1: her equal time. I sent an email to her campaign. Nothing.
- 3:42Speaker 1: They didn't even respond to say no, They just ignore.
- 3:45Speaker 1: And you know, once again, for as many times if
- 3:48Speaker 1: I have run for a political office nine times, one
- 3:51Speaker 1: thing you learn you never turned away free Mediah, never never,
- 3:55Speaker 1: because they are going to do the story with or
- 3:58Speaker 1: without you, so why not be part of it. But
- 4:01Speaker 1: they're not even they're not even answering, So our listening
- 4:04Speaker 1: are responding to me. So anyway, this weekend, we had
- 4:08Speaker 1: House speaker Mike Johnson come to Omaha on Saturday for
- 4:14Speaker 1: Brinker Harding. Right before that, I think a week ago,
- 4:17Speaker 1: Pete Budajeg, secretary or former mayor Pete Budajeg was here
- 4:21Speaker 1: for Denise Powell. But Denise Palell put out a video
- 4:24Speaker 1: that looks like she recorded herself that I talked about yesterday,
- 4:29Speaker 1: But Mary, I want to play it today and I
- 4:31Speaker 1: want you and I to go through these claims because
- 4:35Speaker 1: I said yesterday she starts out from the very beginning
- 4:39Speaker 1: with a lie and then it deteriorates from there. So
- 4:42Speaker 1: if Peyton, if you could plus start her video that
- 4:45Speaker 1: she recorded herself, that's out all over the over the web.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Now play that. Let's start out with it.
- 4:51Speaker 4: Hi, I am in Carney today because my son's baseball
- 4:55Speaker 4: team is playing in the state Little League championships. It's
- 4:58Speaker 4: really exciting to come on here because yesterday speaker Mike
- 5:03Speaker 4: Johnson was here something with Brinker Harding and sounds like
- 5:07Speaker 4: they had a great event with like five people, and
- 5:10Speaker 4: Speaker Johnson said that this election is about the difference
- 5:13Speaker 4: between common sense and crazy. And while I'd love to
- 5:15Speaker 4: think that he was referring to me as the common
- 5:17Speaker 4: sense one, I don't think he was.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Stop right there, Yeah, okay, it's like stop, halt right there. Okay.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Once again, I was there myself, Denise pal you were
- 5:29Speaker 1: not there. And to say there were like five people there,
- 5:32Speaker 1: that is a lie. I mean there was two events.
- 5:35Speaker 1: I was at the earlier event. They were at Wheat
- 5:39Speaker 1: Fields later on and the place was packed to capacity.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Yeah, so that division of five people is a lot
- 5:46Speaker 3: different than ours.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Yes, And you know they people said when Pete Bododageg
- 5:50Speaker 1: was here that people were lined up to get in.
- 5:53Speaker 1: And I will say this, you know that doesn't mean
- 5:56Speaker 1: a whole lot. It doesn't because I keep on bringing
- 5:59Speaker 1: up when I ran against our pe or Heath Mellow
- 6:03Speaker 1: and I were opponents in twenty seventeen. He had Bernie
- 6:06Speaker 1: Sanders come into town, filled up the Baxter Arena, people
- 6:11Speaker 1: lining up down the street to get in. But that
- 6:13Speaker 1: didn't mean all of those people were voting for Heath Mellow.
- 6:17Speaker 1: And that didn't mean that all those people were omahall voters.
- 6:20Speaker 3: No, And people wanted to come see Pete Buddha Judge
- 6:22Speaker 3: just because they like him.
- 6:23Speaker 1: I think that's it.
- 6:24Speaker 3: You know, Pie's a solid guy. I've known him. He's
- 6:27Speaker 3: just he's really a good person. But people came to
- 6:30Speaker 3: see him.
- 6:31Speaker 1: That's what. That's my point.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Gitting when you.
- 6:33Speaker 3: Stand up there and talk nasty and say things about
- 6:37Speaker 3: brinker Harding, has she ever even met brinker Harding?
- 6:40Speaker 1: I I do not think that she has. I don't know,
- 6:44Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't think so. But then she
- 6:46Speaker 1: goes on to say this is what Brinker says. Brinker
- 6:49Speaker 1: and Johnson both said this is about common sense versus crazy,
- 6:54Speaker 1: and she said, I hope I am the common sense.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Well you're not. You're you're a socialists. That's what I've
- 6:59Speaker 2: taken over.
- 7:00Speaker 3: You're trying to take over the Democratic Party, which the Barretts,
- 7:04Speaker 3: the Boils, the Kavanaughs. You know, there's just names and
- 7:08Speaker 3: names and names and carries people that understand the Democratic
- 7:12Speaker 3: Party and believed in what that Democratic Party was. I
- 7:14Speaker 3: mean Sam Howell, for God's sakes, and these people have
- 7:17Speaker 3: turned it on its head. I mean they think this
- 7:19Speaker 3: is all fine and dandy to just be crappy to
- 7:23Speaker 3: people and say things, you know, you're a p od mom,
- 7:25Speaker 3: get out of your car and watch your kid at
- 7:27Speaker 3: a little league game.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Mm instead of doing videos here. So when she says,
- 7:32Speaker 1: I hope I'm the common sense one, we'll we'll get
- 7:34Speaker 1: to the primary with with or Don Cavanaugh what she
- 7:40Speaker 1: did to him, But that wasn't using much common sense
- 7:43Speaker 1: in my opinion. I mean, calling him a maga, I
- 7:47Speaker 1: mean that was just ridiculous.
- 7:49Speaker 2: It's ridiculous.
- 7:50Speaker 3: But the Pete Buddhajes things, I think she thinks these
- 7:52Speaker 3: people are coming to see her, tell her and she's
- 7:56Speaker 3: got yeah, and she's got all this dark money coming
- 7:58Speaker 3: in and they want to know who it is and
- 7:59Speaker 3: they want want the money too, exactly.
- 8:01Speaker 1: So it's so let's go on, Peyton play the next
- 8:05Speaker 1: part when she says that Mike is how she is
- 8:09Speaker 1: addressing the speaker, because that's showing disrespect. How Mike and
- 8:12Speaker 1: Brinker think it's crazy that go ahead and play the
- 8:15Speaker 1: next part.
- 8:16Speaker 4: So apparently Brinker and Mike think that it is crazy
- 8:19Speaker 4: to think that you should be able to go to the.
- 8:21Speaker 5: Doctor when you're sick and it shouldn't bankrupt you.
- 8:24Speaker 4: And if your doctor gives you a prescription, you should
- 8:28Speaker 4: be able to fill that prescription without having to choose
- 8:31Speaker 4: between the medication you need and.
- 8:32Speaker 5: Say groceries, okay, your electric bills.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Don stop right there again. They never said that, and
- 8:41Speaker 1: that is not the position they have either. And you
- 8:44Speaker 1: know Obama, you know it is much better now than
- 8:49Speaker 1: it was with Obamacare. And she's saying that Mike and
- 8:54Speaker 1: Brinker think that people should it's okay that people could
- 9:02Speaker 1: have to choose between a prescription drug or getting their
- 9:06Speaker 1: groceries or electric bill. They never said that.
- 9:08Speaker 3: They never said that, and it's if you look at
- 9:11Speaker 3: what Brinker has and I talked to people after they
- 9:13Speaker 3: had gone to that. We had the brad Ashford Street
- 9:15Speaker 3: naming that day, but I was unable to stop by.
- 9:20Speaker 3: But the speaker Number one, the respect you don't call
- 9:23Speaker 3: someone mike. I mean, if you get elected, you get
- 9:25Speaker 3: to keep that title absolutely, And that's just I don't
- 9:28Speaker 3: care if you're a Democrat, Republican, whatever you are, you
- 9:30Speaker 3: get to keep that title and retain it for life.
- 9:33Speaker 2: I mean, that's how it works.
- 9:35Speaker 3: And if she can't even have the respect to call
- 9:37Speaker 3: someone speaker because that's what he is.
- 9:39Speaker 1: That's right. I called him speaker, mister speaker when I
- 9:42Speaker 1: talked to him. I still call Hal daub or Jim
- 9:44Speaker 1: subtle mayor. I mean I still do out of respect.
- 9:47Speaker 1: But this was showing her disrespect for them. But they
- 9:50Speaker 1: never said that, and that is not part of their
- 9:53Speaker 1: agenda to think that. They think it's crazy that somebody
- 9:57Speaker 1: should be able to get a prescription filled without having
- 10:01Speaker 1: to choose between that and their groceries or their electric bill.
- 10:03Speaker 1: They never said that, and that's not part of their campaign.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Peyton play the next statement she made.
- 10:11Speaker 5: Or your electric bill that month.
- 10:13Speaker 4: Apparently Mike and Brinker think it's crazy to think that
- 10:17Speaker 4: every kid in this country should be able to go
- 10:18Speaker 4: to any public school and not only be.
- 10:20Speaker 5: Safe, but also get a great education.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Okay, stop right there, stop that one too. You cannot
- 10:27Speaker 1: go to any public school in the United States and
- 10:30Speaker 1: have a good education or be safe.
- 10:32Speaker 3: You can't go to Kentucky, go to Alabama, go to Arkansas, exactly.
- 10:36Speaker 1: And they never said they think it's crazy that it
- 10:40Speaker 1: is okay for any kid to I mean, they never
- 10:43Speaker 1: said these things.
- 10:43Speaker 3: But did she brings in ram Emanuel to do a
- 10:46Speaker 3: union strike right at it? I think it's Midwest or something,
- 10:50Speaker 3: But she does this thing. Rama Manuel closed over fifty
- 10:53Speaker 3: public schools in Chicago when he was there. Their crime
- 10:56Speaker 3: rate was over sixty three percent in the midterm. For him,
- 11:02Speaker 3: he was not a good leader. The only reason he's
- 11:05Speaker 3: here was because he's trying to run for president and
- 11:08Speaker 3: he wants to know where her dark money came from
- 11:10Speaker 3: so that he can get it.
- 11:11Speaker 1: It's absolutely ridiculous, and it's on the front page of
- 11:14Speaker 1: the Midland section today in the World Herald about rom
- 11:17Speaker 1: Emmanuel joins Palell on a beer picket line, and it
- 11:21Speaker 1: even says this in here about he jousted with local
- 11:25Speaker 1: teachers in Chicago over control of Chicago's public schools, and
- 11:29Speaker 1: he pressed police and crop prosecutors to get tougher with
- 11:33Speaker 1: criminals in one of the nation's largest cities. Okay, that's good,
- 11:36Speaker 1: But the public school issue he was fighting with the teacher.
- 11:39Speaker 2: He was fighting with him.
- 11:40Speaker 3: And why would n SEA then promote promote this event
- 11:44Speaker 3: with romy Emmanuel.
- 11:46Speaker 1: And that is another head scratcher.
- 11:48Speaker 3: I just I mean, I don't understand it. You can't
- 11:50Speaker 3: have it both ways.
- 11:51Speaker 1: No, No, Okay, Peyton play her next little blurb and.
- 11:56Speaker 4: Might think that it's crazy to want to end Citizens
- 11:59Speaker 4: United and and ban corporate stock trading in DC.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Okay, stop stop right there again. Ban they think it's
- 12:07Speaker 1: crazy to ban corporate stock trading. Let's see what did
- 12:10Speaker 1: Nancy Pelosi do? Yeah about two hundred and fifty million
- 12:14Speaker 1: worth and Citizens United? I thought she supported Citizens United.
- 12:18Speaker 1: I could be wrong on that. I don't know. No,
- 12:21Speaker 1: I mean, he doesn't anymore. No, so, I mean some
- 12:24Speaker 1: of these statements she's making again, she is just throwing
- 12:28Speaker 1: out statements that neither Brinker, Harding or Speaker Mike Johnson
- 12:34Speaker 1: said anything about or nor do they feel that way,
- 12:37Speaker 1: Go ahead and play the rest.
- 12:38Speaker 4: Sprinker and Mike think it's crazy to think that veterans
- 12:41Speaker 4: who put their lives on the line for this country
- 12:44Speaker 4: should be treated well when they come home and shouldn't
- 12:47Speaker 4: have to fight for access to healthcare and food assistance
- 12:51Speaker 4: and housing. I guess Mike and Brinker think it's crazy
- 12:55Speaker 4: to think that seniors should be able to retire with dignity.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Okay, you have to stop here we go again. Brinker
- 13:02Speaker 1: and speaker Mike Johnson absolutely support our veterans and absolutely
- 13:08Speaker 1: feel that when they come home that they will have
- 13:12Speaker 1: good healthcare, good housing, food. They never have made that
- 13:16Speaker 1: part of their never, No, not they do with veterans.
- 13:19Speaker 3: They care about veterans and they think that they should
- 13:22Speaker 3: be taken care of. And look at the VA Center.
- 13:24Speaker 3: I mean when Brad Ashford and Don Bacon, they have
- 13:27Speaker 3: worked as hard as they could work to get.
- 13:30Speaker 1: That veterans together. But together they work together on that.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Up and running.
- 13:34Speaker 3: And if you don't have friends on the other side
- 13:35Speaker 3: of the aisle, you've got nothing.
- 13:37Speaker 2: I mean, you're at Ashford. You know it was the
- 13:39Speaker 2: same thing.
- 13:40Speaker 3: But when Brad was running and then when he was
- 13:42Speaker 3: in the primary, Car Eastman beat him. And this she
- 13:45Speaker 3: was a big she's a big Car Eastman.
- 13:47Speaker 1: Fan, you know.
- 13:49Speaker 3: So the other day we're at we're up at the
- 13:52Speaker 3: Veterans up at you know, we're having a street naming
- 13:55Speaker 3: for Brad Ashford and let's talk about that. Yeah, So
- 13:59Speaker 3: we're having this great event, which of course Anne texted
- 14:03Speaker 3: a bunch of people to come to. We had a
- 14:04Speaker 3: great crowd and we get up there and I look
- 14:08Speaker 3: over and I see who do I see?
- 14:11Speaker 2: But Denise Powell?
- 14:13Speaker 3: Interesting, Well, yeah, because she wasn't a supporter of Brad
- 14:17Speaker 3: Ashford's and if she thought that was the place that
- 14:19Speaker 3: she was going to go to see John Cavanaugh or
- 14:21Speaker 3: to be able to talk to him, because she's been
- 14:23Speaker 3: calling tons of people, especially women, tons of women here
- 14:27Speaker 3: in Omaha try to figure out how to best go
- 14:31Speaker 3: and get John Cavanaugh to be on her team. And
- 14:34Speaker 3: it's never ever going to work. I mean, what she
- 14:37Speaker 3: did with this dark money and what she did and
- 14:39Speaker 3: the things she said, she's not just a pod mom,
- 14:42Speaker 3: she's insane.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Well you know what, yes, and you said that, you
- 14:48Speaker 1: said she's insane. I will say there are things that
- 14:51Speaker 1: she has said that just doesn't make sense to me
- 14:55Speaker 1: at all. And I have a lot of friends who
- 14:58Speaker 1: are Democrats. I have a a lot of friends who
- 15:01Speaker 1: are very liberal that did support me in the past,
- 15:04Speaker 1: but I don't know of any of them that I've
- 15:06Speaker 1: talked to that didn't say, you know what, I am
- 15:10Speaker 1: still a Democrat, but I supported John Cavanaugh. And I
- 15:14Speaker 1: am mad of what she did to John Cavanaugh, how
- 15:17Speaker 1: she lied about him, and then she comes back and
- 15:20Speaker 1: wants his support now. And I know she is calling
- 15:23Speaker 1: them because a lot of those people have told me
- 15:25Speaker 1: she is calling me, yes, and she wants my support,
- 15:28Speaker 1: and they're sent They're like, uh uh, I don't care
- 15:31Speaker 1: about how you ran that campaign and what you said
- 15:34Speaker 1: about John Cavanaugh. And I told you this before. I
- 15:37Speaker 1: like John Cavanaugh. Yeah, I mean he was so good
- 15:39Speaker 1: in the legislature. He was easy to talk to. He
- 15:42Speaker 1: was he reached out to me many times and said
- 15:45Speaker 1: what do you think about this bill or that bill.
- 15:47Speaker 1: He worked across the all to get things done. So
- 15:50Speaker 1: what she said about him so that she could win
- 15:52Speaker 1: that primary is so offensive, I think to me, And
- 15:57Speaker 1: you know, when she said that, Mike, who is Speaker
- 16:00Speaker 1: Mike Johnson and Brinker think it's crazy that seniors can
- 16:04Speaker 1: retire with dignity. What about the big beautiful bill. I
- 16:08Speaker 1: mean that took taxes off Social Security, they improved seniors retirement.
- 16:13Speaker 2: Oh my god, it's bar none what the big Bill?
- 16:17Speaker 3: And there's things that I completely disagree with, But I
- 16:20Speaker 3: just think we have taken the opportunity to make people's
- 16:24Speaker 3: lives better.
- 16:25Speaker 2: Is gas too much? You bet it is? Our grocer
- 16:28Speaker 2: is expensive? You bet it is?
- 16:29Speaker 3: Is you know, all of those things that they're complaining about.
- 16:33Speaker 3: But it's not just Denise axis though, it's only the Democrats,
- 16:37Speaker 3: and only she cares about people. She doesn't give a
- 16:40Speaker 3: rats rear end about me. You know, she doesn't care
- 16:43Speaker 3: what it is. I am an old time Democrat, I am,
- 16:47Speaker 3: you know. Just the things that she says are so foul.
- 16:53Speaker 2: And that's the only reason I can put it. She
- 16:55Speaker 2: is a she will not be a good leader.
- 16:58Speaker 1: And you know, I think this says it all when
- 17:01Speaker 1: she said in this article in the World Herald today
- 17:03Speaker 1: about ram Emmanuel joining Powell on a beer picket line.
- 17:08Speaker 1: He comes out and says, this is it. If Denise wins,
- 17:13Speaker 1: we win the majority if Denise doesn't, we don't. He's
- 17:17Speaker 1: talking just about Democrats. And then she turns around and says,
- 17:20Speaker 1: I will represent everybody, Democrats, Republicans and independents.
- 17:23Speaker 2: Really no, and these people are not coming here for her.
- 17:28Speaker 2: You know.
- 17:28Speaker 3: She goes on about Ram Emmanuel and Pete Buddha, Judge
- 17:31Speaker 3: and all these other people that are going to come
- 17:33Speaker 3: to help her, and they're not coming because of that.
- 17:37Speaker 3: They're coming because they're next door to Iowa. And they're
- 17:40Speaker 3: coming because they want to know who the billionaires, billionaires
- 17:43Speaker 3: she's getting money from, and they want to embrace those people.
- 17:47Speaker 1: They want to see the celebrity of it. And you know,
- 17:49Speaker 1: like I said in twenty seventeen, when Heath Mellow, God
- 17:52Speaker 1: loved him because I love Heath Mellow. When he filled
- 17:55Speaker 1: the Baxter Arena, we were like, my campaign was like,
- 17:58Speaker 1: oh my gosh, we're sunk. It backfired on it because
- 18:01Speaker 1: they were not there just to see Heath Mellow. They
- 18:04Speaker 1: were there to see Bernie.
- 18:05Speaker 3: They were there to see Bernie, and they were Bernie Bots, right,
- 18:09Speaker 3: And I was never a Bernie supporter, but I couldn't
- 18:12Speaker 3: believe when he did that. We all said, you know,
- 18:15Speaker 3: our group of friends said, oh my god, what is
- 18:17Speaker 3: he doing? You know, because Heath was a solid He's
- 18:20Speaker 3: a great man and he's been a great friend for years.
- 18:22Speaker 1: Yes, I like you too.
- 18:23Speaker 3: Yeah, he's a great guy. But it's just it was
- 18:25Speaker 3: a big mistake. But I think she'll continue to fall
- 18:29Speaker 3: over these mistakes and her lives will catch up with her.
- 18:31Speaker 2: I mean, when people make things up.
- 18:33Speaker 3: You know, you're sitting in a car by yourself at
- 18:35Speaker 3: your son's t ball game, Go out and.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Talk to the other mom.
- 18:38Speaker 1: Do it doing your video that you could get out
- 18:40Speaker 1: right away to criticize Brinker Harding and Mike. Go ahead
- 18:44Speaker 1: and play the rest of it.
- 18:45Speaker 6: Page about thirty seconds left in this video, Gene, let's
- 18:47Speaker 6: just play it out here.
- 18:48Speaker 1: Okay.
- 18:48Speaker 4: The stock shelves at home depot to make ends meet
- 18:51Speaker 4: because they can't afford their medications and their housing.
- 18:55Speaker 5: So if that's.
- 18:56Speaker 4: Crazy, then I'm just gonna go ahead and take that
- 18:58Speaker 4: as a badge of honor, and I if.
- 19:01Speaker 5: You agree, I'd love your sport, I'd love your vote.
- 19:05Speaker 4: And even if you don't support me, now, just know
- 19:07Speaker 4: that if I get to DC, I will support you when.
- 19:09Speaker 2: I get there.
- 19:10Speaker 5: So have great Sunday, friends, and see you soon. Let's
- 19:13Speaker 5: play ball.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Okay, let's see assume Denise, But are you going to
- 19:16Speaker 1: represent me as a Republican? Are you going to represent
- 19:19Speaker 1: the independence? Are are again? Are you saying things just
- 19:23Speaker 1: to get a vote? When you say that seniors have
- 19:26Speaker 1: to stock shells at home depot, well I don't find
- 19:28Speaker 1: that as being really a bad thing. I mean, stocking
- 19:30Speaker 1: shells at home depot is kind of fun. But I
- 19:33Speaker 1: would I have.
- 19:34Speaker 3: Friends whose dands are worked at home depot cards or
- 19:36Speaker 3: ace hardware.
- 19:37Speaker 2: I know it for they were having the greatest time ever.
- 19:39Speaker 1: For something to do. But when she again says can't
- 19:42Speaker 1: afford their meds, Trump our X has made a lot
- 19:46Speaker 1: of medications and drugs a lot cheaper, a lot cheaper.
- 19:50Speaker 3: Well, a lot of the generic drugs, A lot of
- 19:52Speaker 3: the generic drugs have gone down by.
- 19:57Speaker 1: Absolutely they have.
- 19:58Speaker 6: Oh.
- 19:58Speaker 2: I just think she's.
- 20:01Speaker 3: I think what's happening is people have gone so far
- 20:04Speaker 3: over the other way. I mean, these are AOC people,
- 20:07Speaker 3: and AOC I'm sure is a nice person. She's not
- 20:10Speaker 3: my politics, and she's not a lot of our politics
- 20:13Speaker 3: here in Omaha.
- 20:15Speaker 2: We're Nebraska nice.
- 20:16Speaker 3: We don't buy elections, which she's trying to do and
- 20:20Speaker 3: we are looking for someone to take us and make
- 20:24Speaker 3: it a more positive experience for everybody.
- 20:27Speaker 1: And you know, I said this yesterday, but I got
- 20:30Speaker 1: to repeat it that Senator Nebraska Senator Bob Carey said
- 20:35Speaker 1: back in a nineteen ninety five interview about Bill Clinton,
- 20:39Speaker 1: and he said Bill Clinton is an unusually good liar,
- 20:43Speaker 1: unusually good. Do you realize that that's what Bob Carey
- 20:47Speaker 1: said about Bill Clinton. I think what Denise pal is
- 20:49Speaker 1: doing is she is saying things to try to get
- 20:52Speaker 1: your vote, but she will not come out in public
- 20:56Speaker 1: and talk about it and support it.
- 20:57Speaker 4: No.
- 20:57Speaker 3: And what I think happens is people just throw as
- 20:59Speaker 3: much as they can against the wall and they're like,
- 21:01Speaker 3: oh God, let something stick. And her stuff is just
- 21:04Speaker 3: not sticking. It's just not sticking. I mean the other
- 21:07Speaker 3: day when we were at Brad Ashford's, you know, she
- 21:09Speaker 3: shows up to a street signing, which the most important
- 21:12Speaker 3: part of it was to honor Brad Ashford for all
- 21:15Speaker 3: the public service he's done.
- 21:16Speaker 1: And that's the only reason to be there, really, that's.
- 21:19Speaker 3: The only reason, you know, And she shows up knows
- 21:21Speaker 3: that Kavanaughs and Ashford's are good friends. If she's done
- 21:23Speaker 3: any of her research or if any people around her
- 21:26Speaker 3: are telling her this. And she shows up to this
- 21:28Speaker 3: thing and I thought, oh my gosh, and I was
- 21:31Speaker 3: I was looked at her like she had four heads.
- 21:34Speaker 1: I was like, what are you doing here? And she's
- 21:37Speaker 1: place not the time. No, she went back to her car.
- 21:40Speaker 1: All right, Mary Barrett is with us today. Mary, can
- 21:42Speaker 1: you come back after the commercial first more. Okay, we're
- 21:45Speaker 1: going to take a break right now. And Mary Barrett
- 21:47Speaker 1: is with us today and she'll be back right after
- 21:50Speaker 1: our break. But the Democrat agenda has changed so much.
- 21:55Speaker 1: It seems like a lot of these new radical candidates
- 21:59Speaker 1: that are more socialist and communists number one. I said
- 22:02Speaker 1: this in the last segment. They are they are winning
- 22:05Speaker 1: races and they are ousting longtime Democrat elected officials for
- 22:10Speaker 1: these communists that say now a lot of them are
- 22:13Speaker 1: saying they want to do away with the US constitution,
- 22:15Speaker 1: in the judicial system. It seems like their agenda is
- 22:19Speaker 1: get rid of Trump, get rid of ice, get rid
- 22:21Speaker 1: of police, and open the borders. What else are they
- 22:25Speaker 1: talking about?
- 22:25Speaker 2: Yeah? And how else are we going to do this?
- 22:27Speaker 1: I mean, how are you going to do with those things?
- 22:29Speaker 3: I mean, what I want you to do is to
- 22:31Speaker 3: do your job exactly, you know, and not part of
- 22:35Speaker 3: doing your job is not just saying.
- 22:38Speaker 2: Bad I have to help myself from not swearing.
- 22:41Speaker 1: But we can beat you, but better not.
- 22:44Speaker 2: Yeah, it'd be like, but these people.
- 22:49Speaker 3: That are getting ousted who are good public servants, you know,
- 22:53Speaker 3: and they're getting ousted because this crazy dark.
- 22:56Speaker 2: Money keeps coming in, that's right.
- 22:58Speaker 3: And I am against against the dark money.
- 23:01Speaker 2: And you can't only say, well, we just want to
- 23:04Speaker 2: get rid of Trump.
- 23:04Speaker 3: And every time you get in front of a Democratic
- 23:06Speaker 3: crowd you talk about Trump. I mean, I'm not the
- 23:09Speaker 3: one that's going to your town hall meetings. I mean,
- 23:11Speaker 3: we've got this governor in Iowa, this governor candidate in
- 23:14Speaker 3: Iowa now who doesn't want it. He doesn't want anybody
- 23:17Speaker 3: but a Democrat to come in.
- 23:18Speaker 1: That's right. That's Rob sand He's a Democrat candidate for
- 23:21Speaker 1: governor in Iowa. And it is reported that he will
- 23:25Speaker 1: only let Democrats into his town hall and he wants
- 23:28Speaker 1: to be the governor of Iowa.
- 23:31Speaker 2: Well you're not.
- 23:32Speaker 1: I mean, holy cow, that that makes me scratch my
- 23:35Speaker 1: head too. And you know, the one question that I
- 23:37Speaker 1: asked speaker Mike Johnson when he was here, I said,
- 23:40Speaker 1: but how do we It seems to me that the
- 23:44Speaker 1: far far left, Democrats, the socialists, they are so spun
- 23:49Speaker 1: up now and they are energized, and they are they're
- 23:52Speaker 1: absolutely rabid, and I'm finding the Republicans tend to be
- 23:57Speaker 1: pretty apathetic. I go back to my a year ago,
- 24:01Speaker 1: and the voter turnout was twenty seven percent in the
- 24:04Speaker 1: general election. In the May primary it was twenty six
- 24:09Speaker 1: percent voter turnout. How do we get people activated to
- 24:13Speaker 1: go whether you're Democrat or Republican or independent, and go
- 24:17Speaker 1: to the polls and vote for the right person. The
- 24:19Speaker 1: one thing that the speaker said to me is he
- 24:22Speaker 1: said people vote for basically three reasons. They vote out
- 24:26Speaker 1: of anger, they vote out of fear, and they vote
- 24:29Speaker 1: out of hope. And he said, those are the three reasons.
- 24:33Speaker 1: And if anybody's going to say, well, what do I
- 24:35Speaker 1: need to do with my campaign to win, You've got
- 24:37Speaker 1: to hit those issues. You got to make people fearful
- 24:41Speaker 1: of what could happen if the wrong people get elected
- 24:45Speaker 1: in these offices, which we are seeing happen.
- 24:47Speaker 2: Oh, we're seeing it happen. In saying we're seeing far
- 24:50Speaker 2: right and far left.
- 24:52Speaker 3: And I think there was a poll done by Main Street,
- 24:57Speaker 3: which is in Washington, d C. It's based out of Washington,
- 25:00Speaker 3: but it's called main Street and a couple started at
- 25:03Speaker 3: a one hundred year not one hundred years ago, but
- 25:05Speaker 3: a long time ago, and they did a lot of
- 25:07Speaker 3: polling on women voting in primaries. Sixty four percent of
- 25:11Speaker 3: women do not vote in a primary.
- 25:13Speaker 1: And I can believe that sixty four percent.
- 25:16Speaker 3: How do we engage those women and how do we
- 25:18Speaker 3: have our election commissioners and those people become activated in
- 25:22Speaker 3: not as a democratic thing, but you take all the
- 25:25Speaker 3: people who are working at different companies and you go
- 25:27Speaker 3: in to talk to them about the importance of elections,
- 25:30Speaker 3: not the constitution. You know, you speak only of why
- 25:36Speaker 3: you need to get there and whether it's fear or hope.
- 25:39Speaker 2: They've got to get to the polls.
- 25:40Speaker 1: This is ridiculous. And you know, people they what they
- 25:43Speaker 1: want to know in a candidate is what are you
- 25:47Speaker 1: going to do to make my life better? How are
- 25:49Speaker 1: you going to improve my life? That's what they want
- 25:52Speaker 1: to hear. That's what they want to know. And you know,
- 25:55Speaker 1: if they don't get out there and learn about the candidates.
- 25:58Speaker 1: This is what could be a real issue because this
- 26:01Speaker 1: negative campaigning that Denise is really into. And again I
- 26:06Speaker 1: will invite her anytime to be on this show to
- 26:08Speaker 1: defend what she's doing. But do you know why people
- 26:11Speaker 1: You know this, Mary, but why do people do negative campaigning?
- 26:14Speaker 1: Because it works because people hear these lies, and they
- 26:18Speaker 1: hear these things over and over and over again onto
- 26:22Speaker 1: TV and in the newspaper and then the radio, and
- 26:25Speaker 1: they think, well, maybe that's true, maybe I shouldn't vote
- 26:28Speaker 1: for this person. But you got to really get in
- 26:30Speaker 1: there and learn what they stand for and what they
- 26:33Speaker 1: are going to do to help you and your life
- 26:35Speaker 1: and your life get better.
- 26:37Speaker 3: Well, and it's not about you know, abortion is always
- 26:39Speaker 3: going to be an issue. Yes, you know, it's always
- 26:41Speaker 3: going to be a hot button because there's so much
- 26:43Speaker 3: money on both sides of the issue, so it's always.
- 26:46Speaker 2: Going to come into play in elections.
- 26:47Speaker 1: Let it go.
- 26:49Speaker 3: I mean, if you spend all of your time talking
- 26:51Speaker 3: about that, you're losing more than half the population.
- 26:55Speaker 1: It's true, and I think you know it's It is
- 26:57Speaker 1: very it's controversial, but people generally feel one way or another.
- 27:02Speaker 1: They are either pro choice or they are pro life.
- 27:05Speaker 1: There's not a lot in between. And so whatever people feel,
- 27:09Speaker 1: that is your feeling. You know, I may not agree
- 27:12Speaker 1: with it, but that is your feeling. But there's a
- 27:14Speaker 1: lot more to these candidates and for the reason that
- 27:18Speaker 1: you are electing them than just one issue. Now, a
- 27:21Speaker 1: lot of voters are one issue people. Yep, oh yeah,
- 27:24Speaker 1: there's no doubt about it. And you know, in Nebraska,
- 27:27Speaker 1: the number one issue in the state, the number one
- 27:30Speaker 1: issue in the city of Omaha, the number one issue
- 27:32Speaker 1: in Douglas County is property taxes. What is Denise Palell
- 27:38Speaker 1: going to do about taxes? What is Brinker Harding going
- 27:41Speaker 1: to do about I mean, we need to know these things,
- 27:43Speaker 1: That's what we need to know.
- 27:45Speaker 3: And I think that and I think the newspaper and
- 27:47Speaker 3: I think that we have a we have to make
- 27:51Speaker 3: sure that people know. So however that is if it's
- 27:54Speaker 3: by newspaper or if it's by TV, but we have
- 27:57Speaker 3: to let people know. You're like Metro Community College sends
- 27:59Speaker 3: out a a little ten page deal about their classes.
- 28:03Speaker 3: Why are we not doing that about elections? I understand
- 28:05Speaker 3: the Women's assist or Women's.
- 28:06Speaker 1: League Legal Women voters used to put out something they.
- 28:09Speaker 3: Put out something, but you have, but if you didn't
- 28:13Speaker 3: do it exactly right, if you didn't put in your
- 28:15Speaker 3: middle initial, or if you didn't get anything, then it
- 28:17Speaker 3: never got into the newspaper. So I think what they
- 28:19Speaker 3: need to do is we need to figure out a
- 28:21Speaker 3: way that we can do that and we can send
- 28:22Speaker 3: out that you know that brochure again that says this
- 28:26Speaker 3: is how they stand factual no bs.
- 28:29Speaker 1: On all of these questions. Give everybody the same question
- 28:32Speaker 1: and let them answer them. You know what, the legal
- 28:34Speaker 1: women voters, they're very, very particular about the number of
- 28:38Speaker 1: words and if you go over, they'll just cut you
- 28:40Speaker 1: off in mid sentence. Yeah, so you can't even get
- 28:44Speaker 1: like you got this thing you're trying to talk about
- 28:46Speaker 1: or explain, and then it's just like right mid sentence,
- 28:48Speaker 1: it's done. And so we need more of that. But
- 28:52Speaker 1: I guess I just need to continue to stress it's
- 28:55Speaker 1: so important that people familiarize yourself with who the candidates are,
- 29:00Speaker 1: understand what they stand for, and don't listen to a
- 29:04Speaker 1: lot of this bologney out there. The thing when you
- 29:07Speaker 1: talk about dark money coming in, that just irritates the
- 29:11Speaker 1: heck out of me because I think why do we
- 29:13Speaker 1: need people in other states, in in other countries telling
- 29:18Speaker 1: us in Nebraska how to vote.
- 29:20Speaker 2: Well, Douglas County is not for sale.
- 29:21Speaker 3: CD two is not for sale, and I think we
- 29:24Speaker 3: need to make that known. You know, you're not going
- 29:27Speaker 3: to win because you had Peep Budo Judge come in,
- 29:30Speaker 3: or because you had you know, Hakeem Jeffries come in,
- 29:32Speaker 3: or whoever it is. That's not going to make you win.
- 29:35Speaker 3: And everyone has to realize we each have one vote.
- 29:39Speaker 2: That's it. You got one vote.
- 29:41Speaker 3: So you can have five hundred people per thing, and
- 29:44Speaker 3: you'll probably get maybe a quarter of those people are
- 29:47Speaker 3: going to vote for you that are coming to things,
- 29:50Speaker 3: you know, and a lot of people just go because
- 29:51Speaker 3: a it's free food. You know, it's somewhere for you
- 29:55Speaker 3: to go, you know, if you don't have anything else
- 29:58Speaker 3: to do.
- 29:58Speaker 2: I mean, and that's just kind of how it is.
- 30:00Speaker 3: It's filled with a lot of volunteers, and a lot
- 30:03Speaker 3: of these volunteers now are switching over and getting paid
- 30:06Speaker 3: twenty five dollars to go and walk. You know these
- 30:08Speaker 3: I work for MERV, repeat, do work for MERV repeat,
- 30:11Speaker 3: greatest guy ever, but I do.
- 30:13Speaker 2: Work for MERV and Merv's out walking here every day.
- 30:15Speaker 1: He is my representative, and he's out.
- 30:18Speaker 2: It's a million degrees and there's.
- 30:19Speaker 1: Mur's District twelve right right, yep.
- 30:21Speaker 2: He's LD twelve, and he is. He walks and he
- 30:24Speaker 2: goes to all the doors.
- 30:25Speaker 3: But MERV does all Democratic doors, all Republican doors, all
- 30:28Speaker 3: independent doors. He doesn't just work on just his people,
- 30:32Speaker 3: and he gets to tell his story, you.
- 30:34Speaker 2: Know, which was really important.
- 30:35Speaker 3: And then you have someone run against you that all
- 30:37Speaker 3: they want to do is talk about all the negative
- 30:40Speaker 3: far left stuff, and that's not what people want to
- 30:42Speaker 3: hear at the door.
- 30:43Speaker 2: You know.
- 30:43Speaker 1: I used to when I was walking and knocking, walking
- 30:46Speaker 1: to knocking, I would go to Democrats, Independents and Republicans too.
- 30:51Speaker 1: I just wanted to go to more frequent voters. Yeah,
- 30:53Speaker 1: that's what I's And it didn't make any difference what
- 30:56Speaker 1: political party they were in. And I always played this game.
- 30:59Speaker 1: If they had my opponent sign in their yard, my
- 31:01Speaker 1: campaign would say, don't even bother and I go, Nope,
- 31:03Speaker 1: I'm going to do that too, because maybe if I
- 31:05Speaker 1: knock on the door, maybe I'll get their vote. Who knows.
- 31:09Speaker 1: And you know, Mary, you just brought up a minute
- 31:10Speaker 1: ago you said it is one vote. You have one vote.
- 31:13Speaker 1: But you know what, every vote does matter. And I'm
- 31:17Speaker 1: going to give you an example of old Jean Stothard again,
- 31:19Speaker 1: and that's in two thousand and six, I lost a
- 31:22Speaker 1: legislative race for District twelve against Steve Lathrop by fourteen
- 31:27Speaker 1: votes on a recount. Fourteen votes is what I lost
- 31:30Speaker 1: that and it was on a provisional ballot count. It
- 31:33Speaker 1: was like ten days after the election. So yes, every vote,
- 31:37Speaker 1: absolutely yes, every vote counts.
- 31:38Speaker 2: And if you don't, if you don't vote, you know.
- 31:41Speaker 3: We had a woman who came into Bacon's office one time,
- 31:43Speaker 3: to the campaign office, and she was asking me a
- 31:46Speaker 3: million questions and I said, well, first let me ask you.
- 31:48Speaker 3: You're registered to vote, aren't you. Well, I'll register if
- 31:50Speaker 3: I decide I want to register. Oh so I said, well,
- 31:53Speaker 3: we can go next door where they're registering people will vote.
- 31:55Speaker 3: I'd love to have you come over there, and I said, well,
- 31:57Speaker 3: go do that. Then she said you're having a bad day.
- 32:00Speaker 3: I said, no, I'm not.
- 32:01Speaker 2: Having a bad day. You just have to register to vote.
- 32:03Speaker 1: You can vote, right.
- 32:05Speaker 3: Well, she was beside herself, and of course came back
- 32:07Speaker 3: in a half hour, lady to bring me a bouquet
- 32:09Speaker 3: of flowers.
- 32:10Speaker 2: You know, are you'll have a better day. Oh, I said,
- 32:13Speaker 2: vote registered to vote.
- 32:15Speaker 1: I don't need flowers. I need you to vote. You know,
- 32:18Speaker 1: when my kids turned eighteen, that's the first thing I
- 32:20Speaker 1: did on their birthday, as I marched them down to
- 32:22Speaker 1: the to the DMV at the time and had them
- 32:26Speaker 1: registered to vote. Yeah, we all registered to vote. That
- 32:28Speaker 1: was no, There was never a question and I never
- 32:31Speaker 1: want to miss either. And you know, we could talk
- 32:32Speaker 1: about so many things, talking about voting and mail and
- 32:35Speaker 1: ballots and things like that, but we're going to run
- 32:37Speaker 1: out of time. Mary Barrett's been with us today. We
- 32:40Speaker 1: always have a lot to talk about about campaigns. But
- 32:44Speaker 1: I think Mary, your your story is particularly interesting because
- 32:47Speaker 1: you have your family lifelong democrats got frustrated basically with
- 32:52Speaker 1: the system. You're an independent now and I would say
- 32:56Speaker 1: you are very open minded. I mean, you're with both parties,
- 33:00Speaker 1: but you want to stress how important it is that
- 33:04Speaker 1: we familiarize with these candidates and we understand what they
- 33:08Speaker 1: are saying to us, and what some of these are
- 33:10Speaker 1: saying just to get a vote that isn't true and
- 33:13Speaker 1: That's what really bothers me.
- 33:15Speaker 3: Yeah, and we just have to you have to be consistent.
- 33:17Speaker 3: You have to look at how both people are, what
- 33:19Speaker 3: they're saying, and what they're doing. I mean, you can
- 33:22Speaker 3: say a lot of things, but if you're doing something different,
- 33:25Speaker 3: you know. But you know, Brad Asher, we thought he
- 33:27Speaker 3: went to Washington saying I'd get twenty five. I want
- 33:30Speaker 3: to have twenty five friends on the Republican side, you know.
- 33:33Speaker 3: And when Don Bacon went there and won against Brad,
- 33:36Speaker 3: Don went there and he has made more friends. It's
- 33:40Speaker 3: amazing the amount of people and the bills that he
- 33:42Speaker 3: gets on. And he's doing the right thing.
- 33:44Speaker 1: For Nebraska, right.
- 33:46Speaker 4: You know.
- 33:46Speaker 1: I have to bring up one other thing. I remembered
- 33:49Speaker 1: something that was said by by Brad Ashred's son about Brad,
- 33:54Speaker 1: and it was actually at Brad's funeral, And do you
- 33:57Speaker 1: remember what he said? He said, my dad is like
- 33:59Speaker 1: the Northwest Freeway. Sometimes he goes to the right, sometimes
- 34:03Speaker 1: he goes to the left, and sometimes he goes right
- 34:05Speaker 1: down the middle. But he gets things done. And I
- 34:07Speaker 1: really like that he said that, and he made everybody
- 34:10Speaker 1: laugh because that is so like Brad Asker.
- 34:13Speaker 2: Oh my god.
- 34:14Speaker 1: One thing real quick.
- 34:15Speaker 2: I was working for Al.
- 34:16Speaker 3: Gore and I was down in Oklahoma, and I was
- 34:20Speaker 3: staying at this home with Governor Walters, who was out
- 34:22Speaker 3: of office by then, but I was staying at his house.
- 34:24Speaker 3: And so he had a guy come over, old Jean Stipe,
- 34:27Speaker 3: and he was a million years over and all hunched over.
- 34:29Speaker 3: And we were there one time and Gore had come
- 34:33Speaker 3: and he says, well. One of the other senators said, well,
- 34:37Speaker 3: what do you think about this to this old guy,
- 34:40Speaker 3: and he said, well, I'm kind of in the middle
- 34:41Speaker 3: of the road. And then this other guy, who was
- 34:44Speaker 3: another eighty year old, said, listen, get your He said,
- 34:48Speaker 3: there's nothing in the middle of the road but dead
- 34:50Speaker 3: armadillas and yellow lines. You get your ass on the right,
- 34:55Speaker 3: or you get your ass on the left. And I
- 34:58Speaker 3: was like, oh, Jean Stipe, I love you.
- 35:00Speaker 1: Mary Barrett, thanks so much for being with us today.
- 35:03Speaker 1: I really appreciate it.
- 35:04Speaker 2: Oh, thank you so much.
- 35:05Speaker 3: You've You're just an absolute delight and you've become such
- 35:08Speaker 3: a wonderful friend.
- 35:09Speaker 2: And I think I just appreciate everything you do.
- 35:12Speaker 1: Thank you, and I appreciate everything you and your family
- 35:14Speaker 1: have done. So thank you so much for being with
- 35:16Speaker 1: us today.
- 35:17Speaker 6: Thanks so much here on a Tuesday morning on the
- 35:19Speaker 6: KFAB comment line. Your host Jean Stouth. My name is
- 35:23Speaker 6: Peyton Hilock. Thank you so much for Mary Barrett for
- 35:26Speaker 6: joining the show this morning. It's always a blast to
- 35:28Speaker 6: have her on.
- 35:29Speaker 1: Yeah, she's a feisty one. And if anyone in Omaha
- 35:33Speaker 1: hasn't been to Barrett's Barleycorn down there on Levenworth, you
- 35:35Speaker 1: need to go to because you know LSU during the
- 35:38Speaker 1: College World Series, that is their favorite place. Really, Yeah,
- 35:41Speaker 1: and they have LSCU. Surprised they have the LSU signs
- 35:44Speaker 1: all over in there. But the Barretts are great fan.
- 35:47Speaker 1: She's amazing.
- 35:48Speaker 2: She's the perfect mix of sweet and spicy.
- 35:50Speaker 1: Yes she is, She definitely is. But you know what
- 35:52Speaker 1: I wanted to bring up. Number one, Mary Ewing is
- 35:55Speaker 1: presenting the twenty twenty seven budget today at two pm,
- 35:58Speaker 1: so we'll have that to talk about tomorrow. But the
- 36:03Speaker 1: news today was that Mayor Ewing did a press conference
- 36:05Speaker 1: to talk about the new police fire headquarters that is
- 36:08Speaker 1: eyed near the Crossroad site. Now that depends on a
- 36:13Speaker 1: voter approved bond issue, but I just wanted to bring
- 36:17Speaker 1: up we started looking at a new combined fire police
- 36:21Speaker 1: headquarters ten years ago. At least ten years ago. We
- 36:25Speaker 1: did hire Leo Daily which is the architect at that time.
- 36:29Speaker 1: In the beginning, we were looking at just renovating the
- 36:32Speaker 1: current headquarter police headquarter downtown and that was for about
- 36:38Speaker 1: sixty eight million dollars. Then we decided it might be
- 36:42Speaker 1: more efficient, It would be more efficient if we could
- 36:45Speaker 1: combine police and fire headquarters and put them together. We
- 36:51Speaker 1: had about two sites identified downtown and the design depended
- 36:56Speaker 1: on the site. Because one of the sites was really
- 36:59Speaker 1: pretty small. Also, it would have to go up, it'd
- 37:02Speaker 1: have to go vertical, it would have to have underground parking.
- 37:05Speaker 1: So we were looking at different sites to put this,
- 37:09Speaker 1: and it looks like that they have picked the crossroad
- 37:12Speaker 1: side now. It in twenty twenty five to twenty thirty
- 37:16Speaker 1: Capital Improvement Plan. That's a six year plan that tells
- 37:20Speaker 1: about the five different types of bonds that people vote on.
- 37:24Speaker 1: Those are general obligation bonds that people have to vote for.
- 37:29Speaker 1: Those are five different types, and there's a bond issue
- 37:32Speaker 1: about every four years. Those are park bonds, public facility,
- 37:37Speaker 1: public safety, transportation which are roads, and sewer bonds. Those
- 37:41Speaker 1: are the five different types of general obligation bonds that
- 37:44Speaker 1: people have to vote on. When in the twenty twenty
- 37:48Speaker 1: five to twenty thirty when I left office, there was
- 37:51Speaker 1: about two hundred million in the Capital Improvement Plan, is
- 37:55Speaker 1: what they said that this facility could cost. We had
- 37:58Speaker 1: identified forty million from bonds and the other one hundred
- 38:02Speaker 1: and sixty million is listed as OL meaning outside local,
- 38:06Speaker 1: meaning there was no funding identified yet, so it was
- 38:09Speaker 1: supposed to come from or hopefully come from, some private money.
- 38:13Speaker 1: Now this is going to be totally paid for with
- 38:16Speaker 1: a bond issue. It's not two hundred million, it's around
- 38:19Speaker 1: one hundred eighty one million. They still have some bonding
- 38:24Speaker 1: capacity already identified, so it would be voter approval of
- 38:27Speaker 1: one hundred and fifty five million. Now I ask where
- 38:31Speaker 1: they get that authority because it comes from public facility bonds.
- 38:35Speaker 1: And just over a year ago, a couple of years ago,
- 38:39Speaker 1: the voters did approve one hundred million to go into
- 38:42Speaker 1: the expansion of the Arena Convention Center. So I did
- 38:45Speaker 1: ask where did that extra bonding capacity come from under
- 38:49Speaker 1: public facility bonds. Now I didn't get an answer on
- 38:53Speaker 1: that one. However, it is my thought that it would
- 38:57Speaker 1: come from that. The original debt on the Arena convention
- 39:00Speaker 1: Center should be paid off in twenty twenty seven, and
- 39:05Speaker 1: so that costs the city in debt just to the
- 39:08Speaker 1: Rena Convention Center about it's right around twenty million a
- 39:12Speaker 1: year and that should be paid off in twenty twenty seven.
- 39:15Speaker 1: So that could probably be where that extra bonding capacity
- 39:18Speaker 1: is coming from. So a lot of more questions for
- 39:21Speaker 1: voters to need to know about this. However, if they
- 39:25Speaker 1: do build this, this is an office building at crossroads.
- 39:28Speaker 1: This is not a police where they can dispatch fire.
- 39:31Speaker 1: This is not a police precinct at all, and you
- 39:34Speaker 1: have to consider that that will also have to be built.
- 39:38Speaker 1: They should be another place downtown for fire to dispatch
- 39:43Speaker 1: downtown where they currently do it would have to be
- 39:47Speaker 1: remodeled or a new facility. And then I thought, and
- 39:50Speaker 1: I think they still feel like there needs to be
- 39:53Speaker 1: a six police precinct downtown because of all the development.
- 39:57Speaker 1: There was always four police precincts in for decades, one
- 40:01Speaker 1: in each quadron of the city. We edit a fifth
- 40:03Speaker 1: out in Elkhorn. But I do think with all the
- 40:06Speaker 1: development and all the residents that are coming into the downtown,
- 40:10Speaker 1: Midtown area. There should be another police precinct downtown and
- 40:14Speaker 1: that should probably We've got to remember that'll probably need
- 40:17Speaker 1: to happen too, But this has been in the making
- 40:20Speaker 1: for years and years and years. One thing I do
- 40:22Speaker 1: want to bring up is okay at the crossroads. That's
- 40:26Speaker 1: one thing that's good, but keep in mind that that's
- 40:29Speaker 1: not going to bring in any revenue. You want a
- 40:32Speaker 1: new development to bring in either more property tax or
- 40:35Speaker 1: sales tax, in this being a city owned facility, neither
- 40:38Speaker 1: will come in on that piece of property. So anyway,
- 40:41Speaker 1: we could talk about that more, and we'll talk about
- 40:43Speaker 1: the budget proposal tomorrow too, but that is it for
- 40:47Speaker 1: us today, and I want to really thank you all
- 40:49Speaker 1: for spending this hour with us and listening, and we'd
- 40:52Speaker 1: love for you to join us again tomorrow. I'm Jeane
- 40:55Speaker 1: Stoutht and this is eleven ten kfab
