- 0:20Speaker 1: the Gospel of Luke, Sermons twelve through twenty five by
- 0:24Speaker 1: Cyril of Alexandria, translated by R. Pain Smith, Sermon twelve,
- 0:31Speaker 1: the twelfth sermon of the Commentary upon the Gospel of
- 0:35Speaker 1: Luke by Saint Cyril. Upon the Fast of our Lord
- 0:39Speaker 1: in the flesh from the Syriac four one through two.
- 0:46Speaker 1: But Jesus, being full of the Holy Ghost, returned from
- 0:50Speaker 1: the Jordan and continued in the spirit in the wilderness
- 0:54Speaker 1: forty days, being tempted of the devil, and he ate
- 0:58Speaker 1: nothing during those days, and when they were accomplished, he
- 1:02Speaker 1: hungered the blessed prophets, when speaking of the only begotten
- 1:07Speaker 1: Word of God, of him who is equal unto God
- 1:12Speaker 1: in glory and the sharer of his throne, and radiant
- 1:16Speaker 1: in perfect equality unto him, lead us to the persuasion
- 1:22Speaker 1: that he was manifested as a savior and deliverer for
- 1:26Speaker 1: those upon earth by saying, arise, O, Lord, help me.
- 1:31Speaker 1: He arose therefore and helped, having taken the form of
- 1:35Speaker 1: a slave and being made in the likeness of men.
- 1:40Speaker 1: For so did he, as one of us, set himself
- 1:44Speaker 1: as an avenger in our stead, against that murderous and
- 1:48Speaker 1: rebellious serpent, who had brought sin upon us, and thereby
- 1:53Speaker 1: had caused corruption and death to reign over the dwellers
- 1:57Speaker 1: upon earth, that we, by his way means and in him,
- 2:02Speaker 1: might gain the victory, whereas of old we were vanquished
- 2:06Speaker 1: and fallen in Adam. Come therefore, and let us praise
- 2:11Speaker 1: the Lord and sing psalms unto God, our Savior. Let
- 2:16Speaker 1: us trample Satan underfoot. Let us raise the shout of
- 2:20Speaker 1: victory over him. Now he is thrown and fallen. Let
- 2:25Speaker 1: us exult over the crafty reptile caught in an inextricable snare.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Let us too, say of him, and the words of
- 2:33Speaker 1: the prophet Jeremiah, how is the hammer of all the
- 2:38Speaker 1: earth broken and beaten? Small thou art found and hast
- 2:42Speaker 1: been taken because thou stoodest against the Lord. For of old,
- 2:48Speaker 1: that is, before the time of the advent of Christ,
- 2:51Speaker 1: the Savior of all, the universal Enemy had somewhat grand
- 2:56Speaker 1: and terrible notions about himself, for he both tully exalted
- 3:01Speaker 1: over the infirmity of the inhabitants of the earth, saying
- 3:06Speaker 1: I will hold the world in my hand as a nest,
- 3:09Speaker 1: and as eggs that are left, I will take it up,
- 3:13Speaker 1: and no one shall escape from me or speak against me.
- 3:18Speaker 1: And in very truth, there was no one of those
- 3:21Speaker 1: upon earth who could rise up against his power. But
- 3:26Speaker 1: the Sun rose up against him and contented with him,
- 3:31Speaker 1: having been made like unto us. And therefore, as I said,
- 3:36Speaker 1: human nature, as victorious in him, wins the crown. And
- 3:42Speaker 1: this in old time the Sun himself proclaimed, where by
- 3:46Speaker 1: one of the holy prophets, he thus addresses Satan, Behold,
- 3:51Speaker 1: I am against thee O corrupting mountain that corruptest the
- 3:56Speaker 1: whole earth. Come therefore, and let us see what the
- 4:01Speaker 1: blessed Evangelist says, when Christ was now going to battle
- 4:05Speaker 1: in our behalf with him who corrupted the whole earth.
- 4:10Speaker 1: But Jesus, being full of the Holy Ghost, returned from
- 4:14Speaker 1: the Jordan. Here behold, I pray man's nature anointed with
- 4:19Speaker 1: the grace of the Holy Ghost in Christ, as the
- 4:22Speaker 1: first fruits and crowned with the highest honors. For of
- 4:27Speaker 1: old Indeed, the God of all promised saying it shall
- 4:32Speaker 1: come to pass in those days that I will pour
- 4:35Speaker 1: out of my spirit upon all flesh. And the promise
- 4:41Speaker 1: is fulfilled for us in Christ first. And whereas of
- 4:45Speaker 1: those in old time who without restraint gave way to
- 4:49Speaker 1: fleshly lust, God somewhere said, my spirit shall not dwell
- 4:55Speaker 1: in these men because they are flesh. Now, because as
- 5:00Speaker 1: all things have become new in Christ, and we are
- 5:03Speaker 1: enriched with the regeneration, that is by water and spirit.
- 5:08Speaker 1: For no longer are we children of flesh and blood,
- 5:12Speaker 1: but rather call God our father. Therefore it is and
- 5:17Speaker 1: very justly that, as being now in honor and possessing
- 5:21Speaker 1: the glorious privilege of adoption, we have been made partakers
- 5:26Speaker 1: of the divine nature by the communication of the Holy Ghost.
- 5:31Speaker 1: But he who is the first born among us, when
- 5:34Speaker 1: he became so among many brethren and yielded himself to emptiness,
- 5:40Speaker 1: was the first to receive the spirit, although himself the
- 5:44Speaker 1: giver of the Spirit, that this dignity and the grace
- 5:48Speaker 1: of fellowship with the Holy Ghost might reach us by
- 5:51Speaker 1: his means something like this. Paul also teaches us, we
- 5:56Speaker 1: are speaking both of him and us. He says, for
- 6:00Speaker 1: both he that sanctifieth and they that are sanctified, are
- 6:05Speaker 1: all of one, for which reason he is not ashamed
- 6:09Speaker 1: to call them his brethren, saying, I will declare thy
- 6:13Speaker 1: name to my brethren, for as being in no degree
- 6:18Speaker 1: ashamed to call us brethren, whose likeness he took. Therefore,
- 6:23Speaker 1: having transferred to himself our poverty, he is sanctified with us,
- 6:29Speaker 1: although himself the sanctifier of all creation, that thou mightst
- 6:34Speaker 1: not see him refusing the measure of human nature, who
- 6:38Speaker 1: consented for the salvation and life of all to become man.
- 6:44Speaker 1: When therefore the wise evangelist says of him, but Jesus,
- 6:50Speaker 1: being full of the spirit returned from the Jordan, be
- 6:54Speaker 1: not offended, nor heer from the mark in thy inward thoughts,
- 6:59Speaker 1: and wander from the doctrine of the truth as to
- 7:03Speaker 1: the way and manner in which the Word, who is God,
- 7:07Speaker 1: was sanctified. But rather understand the wisdom of the economy,
- 7:12Speaker 1: by reason of which also he is the object of
- 7:15Speaker 1: our admiration, For he was made flesh and became man.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Not to avoid whatever belongs to man's estate, and despise
- 7:26Speaker 1: our poverty, but that we might be enriched with what
- 7:30Speaker 1: is his by his having been made like unto us
- 7:33Speaker 1: in every particular sin only accepted. He is sanctified, therefore
- 7:39Speaker 1: is man, but sanctifies as God. For being by nature God,
- 7:45Speaker 1: he was made man. He was led. Therefore, it says
- 7:51Speaker 1: in the spirit in the wilderness forty days, being tempted
- 7:55Speaker 1: of the devil. What therefore is the meaning of the word.
- 8:01Speaker 1: It signifies not so much that he was conducted thither
- 8:05Speaker 1: as that he dwelt and continued there For we are
- 8:09Speaker 1: ourselves also accustomed to say of anyone who lives religiously,
- 8:15Speaker 1: so and so, whoever it may be, is a well
- 8:18Speaker 1: conducted person. And we give the title of pedagogue not
- 8:23Speaker 1: to signify, according to the literal interpretation, that the actually
- 8:28Speaker 1: lead and conduct boys, but that they take care of
- 8:32Speaker 1: them and well and laudably train them, educating and teaching
- 8:36Speaker 1: them to conduct themselves with propriety. He dwelt therefore in
- 8:43Speaker 1: the wilderness, in the spirit, that is spiritually, for he fasted,
- 8:48Speaker 1: granting no food whatsoever to the necessities of the body.
- 8:53Speaker 1: But to this, I imagine someone may immediately object, And what
- 8:59Speaker 1: harmed them? Did it do Jesus to be constantly dwelling
- 9:03Speaker 1: in cities? And in what way could it benefit him
- 9:07Speaker 1: to choose to inhabit the wilderness? For there is no
- 9:10Speaker 1: good thing of which he is in want? And why
- 9:14Speaker 1: too did he also fast? What necessity was there for
- 9:18Speaker 1: him to labor? Who knows not what it is to
- 9:21Speaker 1: feel the rising of any depraved desire. For we adopt
- 9:26Speaker 1: the practice of fasting as a very useful expedient by
- 9:30Speaker 1: which to mortify pleasures, and above it the law of
- 9:34Speaker 1: sin that is in our members, and extirpate those emotions
- 9:38Speaker 1: which lead on to fleshly lust. But what need had
- 9:42Speaker 1: Christ a fasting? For he it is by whom the
- 9:46Speaker 1: Father slays the sin in the flesh. And knowing this,
- 9:50Speaker 1: the Divine Paul wrote for as to the powerlessness of
- 9:54Speaker 1: the law by reason of its weakness because of the flesh,
- 9:58Speaker 1: God having sent his in the likeness of sinful flesh,
- 10:02Speaker 1: and because of sin, condemned the sin in the flesh,
- 10:06Speaker 1: that the righteousness of the Law may be fulfilled in us,
- 10:10Speaker 1: who walk not in the flesh, but in the spirit.
- 10:14Speaker 1: He therefore, who even in us miserable beings, mortifies the
- 10:18Speaker 1: motions of the flesh, and has abolished sin. What fasting
- 10:23Speaker 1: could he need in aught that concerns himself. He is
- 10:26Speaker 1: wholly undefiled by nature, wholly pure, and without blemish. He
- 10:32Speaker 1: cannot experience even the shadow of a change. Why therefore
- 10:36Speaker 1: did he make his abode in the wilderness, and fast
- 10:40Speaker 1: and endure being tempted? The type has regard to us,
- 10:45Speaker 1: my beloved. He sets before us his acts as our example,
- 10:50Speaker 1: and establishes a model of the better and more admirable
- 10:54Speaker 1: mode of life practiced among us. I mean that of
- 10:58Speaker 1: the holy monks. For whence was it possible for men
- 11:02Speaker 1: on earth to know that the habit of dwelling in
- 11:05Speaker 1: deserts was useful for them and highly advantageous for salvation.
- 11:11Speaker 1: For they retire from waves and storms, as it were,
- 11:15Speaker 1: from the utter turmoil and vain distractions of this world.
- 11:19Speaker 1: And so to speak, like the blessed Joseph, they strip
- 11:23Speaker 1: off and give back to the world all that belongs
- 11:26Speaker 1: to it. And something like this, the wise Paul too says,
- 11:30Speaker 1: of those who are wont so to live, but those
- 11:34Speaker 1: who are Jesus Christ have crucified the flesh with its
- 11:38Speaker 1: affections and lusts. And he shows to those who choose
- 11:43Speaker 1: this mode of life that abstinence is necessary, of which
- 11:47Speaker 1: the fruit is fasting in the power of endurance, and
- 11:51Speaker 1: of abstaining from or taking but little food. For so
- 11:55Speaker 1: will Satan, when he tempts, be overcome, but observe this,
- 12:01Speaker 1: especially that He was first baptized and filled with the
- 12:06Speaker 1: Holy Spirit, and withdrew into the wilderness, and made abstinence,
- 12:11Speaker 1: that is fasting, as it were his armor, and being
- 12:16Speaker 1: thus equipped when Satan drew near, and he had overcome him,
- 12:21Speaker 1: he has so set before us himself as our pattern.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Thou therefore too must first put on the armor of
- 12:29Speaker 1: God and the shield of faith and the helmet of salvation.
- 12:35Speaker 1: Thou too must first be clothed with power from on high,
- 12:40Speaker 1: must be made, that is, partaker of the Holy Ghost
- 12:44Speaker 1: by means of precious baptism. And then mayst thou undertake
- 12:49Speaker 1: to lead the life well beloved and honorable with God.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Then with spiritual courage thou shalt take for thy habitation
- 12:58Speaker 1: the deserts. Then will thou keep holy fast and mortify pleasures,
- 13:04Speaker 1: and vanquish Satan when he tempts. In Christ therefore have
- 13:09Speaker 1: we gained all things. Lo he appears among the combatants, who,
- 13:16Speaker 1: as God bestows the prize among those who wear the
- 13:21Speaker 1: chaplet of victory. Is he who crowns the heads of
- 13:25Speaker 1: the saints. Let us behold therefore the skillfulness of his wrestlings,
- 13:31Speaker 1: how he overthrows the devil's wickedness. When forty days had
- 13:35Speaker 1: been spent in fasting, he afterwards hungered. But he it
- 13:41Speaker 1: is who gives food to the hungry, and is himself
- 13:46Speaker 1: the bread that came down from heaven and gives life
- 13:49Speaker 1: to the world, as being that whereby all things consist.
- 13:55Speaker 1: But because, on the other hand, it was necessary that
- 13:59Speaker 1: he who refused not our poverty should withdraw from nothing
- 14:03Speaker 1: whatsoever that belongs to man's condition, he consented for his
- 14:08Speaker 1: flesh to require its natural supplies, and hence the words
- 14:14Speaker 1: he hungered. It was not, however, till he had fasted
- 14:19Speaker 1: sufficiently and by his godlike power, had kept his flesh unwated,
- 14:25Speaker 1: though abstaining from meat and drink, that scarcely. At length,
- 14:29Speaker 1: he permitted it to feel its natural sensations. For it
- 14:34Speaker 1: says that he hungered, And for what reason thatskillfully by
- 14:40Speaker 1: means of the two, he who is at once God
- 14:44Speaker 1: and man, might be recognized as such an one end
- 14:48Speaker 1: the same person, both as superior to us in his
- 14:52Speaker 1: divine nature and in his human nature, as our equal.
- 14:58Speaker 1: Four three. And the devil said unto him. Then the
- 15:04Speaker 1: devil draweth near to tempt him, expecting that the feeling
- 15:08Speaker 1: of hunger would aid him in his innate wickedness, For
- 15:13Speaker 1: oftentimes he prevails over us by taking our infirmities to
- 15:18Speaker 1: aid his plots and enterprises. He thought that he would
- 15:22Speaker 1: readily jump at the wish of seeing bread ready for
- 15:25Speaker 1: his use. And therefore he said, if thou be the
- 15:30Speaker 1: son of God, bid this stone become bred. He approaches
- 15:36Speaker 1: him therefore as an ordinary man, and as one of
- 15:40Speaker 1: the saints. Yet he had a suspicion that possibly he
- 15:44Speaker 1: might be the Christ. In what way, then did he
- 15:48Speaker 1: wish to learn this? He considered that to change the
- 15:52Speaker 1: nature of anything into that which it was not would
- 15:56Speaker 1: be the act indeed of a divine power. It is
- 16:00Speaker 1: God who makes these things and transforms them. If therefore,
- 16:05Speaker 1: says he, this be done, certainly he it is who
- 16:09Speaker 1: is looked for as the subverter of my power. But
- 16:13Speaker 1: if he refuse to work this change I have to
- 16:16Speaker 1: do with a man, and cast away my fear, and
- 16:20Speaker 1: am delivered from my danger. And therefore it was that Christ,
- 16:26Speaker 1: knowing the monster's artifice, neither made the change, nor said
- 16:31Speaker 1: that he was either unable or unwilling to make it,
- 16:34Speaker 1: but rather shakes him off as importunate and officious, saying
- 16:39Speaker 1: that man shall not live by bread alone, by which
- 16:44Speaker 1: he means that if God grant a man the power,
- 16:48Speaker 1: he can subsist without eating and live as Moses and Elias,
- 16:53Speaker 1: who by the word of the Lord, passed forty days
- 16:56Speaker 1: without taking food. If therefore it is possible to live
- 17:01Speaker 1: without bread, why should I make the stone bread? But
- 17:06Speaker 1: he purposely does not say I cannot, that he may
- 17:10Speaker 1: not deny his own power, nor does he say I
- 17:14Speaker 1: can lest the other. Knowing that he is God, to
- 17:18Speaker 1: whom alone such things are possible, should depart from him
- 17:24Speaker 1: and observe. I pray how the nature of man in
- 17:27Speaker 1: Christ cast off the faults of Adam's gluttony by eating.
- 17:32Speaker 1: We were conquered in Adam by abstinence. We conquered in
- 17:36Speaker 1: Christ by the food that springeth up from the earth.
- 17:42Speaker 1: Our earthly body is supported and seeks for its sustenance
- 17:46Speaker 1: that which is congenerate with it. But the rational soul
- 17:51Speaker 1: is nourished unto spiritual healthiness by the word of God.
- 17:55Speaker 1: For the food that the earth supplies nourishes the body
- 17:59Speaker 1: that is akin to it, But that from above and
- 18:02Speaker 1: from Heaven strengthens the spirit. The food of the soul
- 18:07Speaker 1: is the word that cometh from God, even the spiritual
- 18:10Speaker 1: bread which strengtheneth man's heart, according to what is sung
- 18:14Speaker 1: in the Book of Psalms, and such also we affirm
- 18:18Speaker 1: to be the nature of the food of the Holy Angels.
- 18:23Speaker 1: Four five. He showed him all the kingdoms of the world.
- 18:29Speaker 1: But o thou malignant and wicked and accursed being, how
- 18:34Speaker 1: didst thou dare to show the Lord all the kingdoms
- 18:37Speaker 1: of the whole creation and say, all these are mine? Now? Therefore,
- 18:43Speaker 1: if thou wilt fall down and worship me, I will
- 18:47Speaker 1: give them THEE. How dost thou promise that which is
- 18:51Speaker 1: not thine? Who made THEE heir of God's kingdom, who
- 18:56Speaker 1: made THEE Lord of all under heaven, thus seized these
- 19:01Speaker 1: things by fraud. Restore them therefore to the incarnate Son,
- 19:06Speaker 1: the Lord of all hear what the prophet Isaiah says
- 19:10Speaker 1: respecting thee, hath it been prepared for thee also to
- 19:15Speaker 1: reign a deep gulf fire and brimstone, and would lad
- 19:21Speaker 1: in order the anger of the Lord as a gulf
- 19:24Speaker 1: burning with brimstone. How then, dost thou, whose lot is
- 19:29Speaker 1: the inextinguishable flame promised to the King of all that
- 19:34Speaker 1: which is his own? Didst thou think to have him
- 19:38Speaker 1: as thy worshiper, at whom all things tremble, while the
- 19:41Speaker 1: set of fime and all the angelical powers him his glory.
- 19:47Speaker 1: It is written, thou shalt worship the Lord, thy God,
- 19:51Speaker 1: and him only shalt thou serve seasonably. He made mention
- 19:56Speaker 1: of this commandment, striking as it were his head very heart.
- 20:01Speaker 1: For before his advent, Satan had deceived all under heaven,
- 20:06Speaker 1: and was himself everywhere worshiped. But the Law of God,
- 20:11Speaker 1: ejecting him from the dominion he had usurped by fraud,
- 20:15Speaker 1: has commanded men to worship him only, who by nature
- 20:19Speaker 1: and in truth is God, and to offer service to
- 20:23Speaker 1: him alone. Four nine, If thou be the son of God,
- 20:30Speaker 1: cast thyself down. Hence the third temptation which the devil
- 20:36Speaker 1: employs is that of vainglory, saying, cast thyself down, hence
- 20:42Speaker 1: as a proof of thy divinity. But neither did he
- 20:46Speaker 1: make him fall by means of vanity, but himself in
- 20:50Speaker 1: this also shot wide of the mark. For he answers.
- 20:55Speaker 1: It is said, thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
- 21:00Speaker 1: For God grants not his aid to those who tempt him,
- 21:04Speaker 1: but to those who believe in him. Nor ought we
- 21:08Speaker 1: because he deigns us mercy, therefore to make a vain display. Moreover,
- 21:14Speaker 1: Christ never gave a sign to those who tempted him.
- 21:18Speaker 1: For a wicked generation. He saith seeketh after a sign,
- 21:23Speaker 1: and a sign shall not be given it. And let
- 21:27Speaker 1: Satan now, when tempting hear the same. We therefore won
- 21:32Speaker 1: the victory in Christ, and he who conquered an Adam
- 21:36Speaker 1: went away ashamed that we might have him under our feet.
- 21:41Speaker 1: For Christ, as conqueror, handed on to us also the
- 21:45Speaker 1: power to conquer, saying, behold, I have granted you to
- 21:50Speaker 1: tread upon serpents and scorpions and all the power of
- 21:54Speaker 1: the enemy. Four ten. For it is written that he
- 22:01Speaker 1: shall give his angels charge concerning thee to guard thee.
- 22:06Speaker 1: But see how maliciously he endeavors by the use of
- 22:10Speaker 1: the scriptures to humble the glory of the Lord, as
- 22:14Speaker 1: if in need of angelic aid, and as though it
- 22:17Speaker 1: would stumble, did not the angels help it? For the
- 22:22Speaker 1: application of the psalms refers not to Christ, nor does
- 22:26Speaker 1: the sovereign need angels. As for the pinnacle, it was
- 22:30Speaker 1: a very lofty building erected at the side of the temple. Some, however,
- 22:37Speaker 1: wrongly refer the psalm to the person of the Lord,
- 22:41Speaker 1: and taking the verses together thus read, because thou, o Lord,
- 22:46Speaker 1: art my hope, thou hast made the most tie thy refuge.
- 22:51Speaker 1: They say therefore that the Lord had as his refuge
- 22:55Speaker 1: the most high, even the Father who is in heaven.
- 23:00Speaker 1: And their pretext for such a way of understanding it
- 23:03Speaker 1: is that Satan sotook the verses saying, if thou be
- 23:08Speaker 1: the son of God, cast thyself down, for it is
- 23:12Speaker 1: written that he shall give his angels charge concerning thee
- 23:17Speaker 1: For Satan, being false and a deceiver, applies what is
- 23:22Speaker 1: said of us to the person of Christ, the Savior
- 23:24Speaker 1: of us all but we do not understand it in
- 23:28Speaker 1: Satan's fashion. Though if the Arians have so understood it.
- 23:33Speaker 1: There is no cause for astonishment, for they follow their
- 23:37Speaker 1: own father, who is a liar, and the truth is
- 23:40Speaker 1: not in him, according to the Saviour's words. For if
- 23:45Speaker 1: the truth be as they say, and we have made
- 23:48Speaker 1: Christ our help, and he has the Father for his refuge,
- 23:53Speaker 1: then have we fled to one who himself has need
- 23:56Speaker 1: of aid, and call him our savior, who is saved
- 23:59Speaker 1: by another. This cannot be heaven forbid. We say, therefore,
- 24:06Speaker 1: to those who are wont so to think, ye tell
- 24:09Speaker 1: us another of your errors. Ye are traveling out of
- 24:13Speaker 1: the royal and straight path. Ye are falling into thorns
- 24:17Speaker 1: and pitfalls. Ye have wandered from the truth. The Son
- 24:22Speaker 1: is in all things equal to the Father, the mark
- 24:26Speaker 1: and impress of his substance, the most high, as also
- 24:31Speaker 1: the Father is most high. Satan then made use of
- 24:36Speaker 1: these verses as though the Savior were a common man.
- 24:40Speaker 1: For being entirely darkness and having his mind blinded, he
- 24:46Speaker 1: understood not the force of what was said, that the
- 24:49Speaker 1: Psalm is spoken in the person of every just man
- 24:52Speaker 1: who is aided by the Highest, even the God of Heaven.
- 24:58Speaker 1: And besides this, he knew not that the word being
- 25:01Speaker 1: God was made man, and was himself now being tempted
- 25:06Speaker 1: in accordance with the plan of salvation. He therefore, as
- 25:11Speaker 1: I said, supposed the words were spoken as of a
- 25:14Speaker 1: common man, or even as one of the holy prophets.
- 25:18Speaker 1: But it is monstrous for us, who accurately know the
- 25:22Speaker 1: mystery and believe that he is God and the Son
- 25:26Speaker 1: of God, and that for our sakes he became manlike,
- 25:30Speaker 1: unto us to imagine that the verses were spoken of him.
- 25:35Speaker 1: To say, then, thou hast made the most hie thy refuge,
- 25:40Speaker 1: befits not the person of the Savior. For he is
- 25:44Speaker 1: himself the most high, the refuge of all, the hope
- 25:49Speaker 1: of all, the all powerful right hand of the Father.
- 25:54Speaker 1: And whosoever has made him his defense, no evil shall
- 25:59Speaker 1: approach him. For he shall command the angels who are
- 26:03Speaker 1: ministering spirits to guard the just. For just as our
- 26:08Speaker 1: fathers in the flesh, when they see the path rough
- 26:12Speaker 1: and impassable, catch up their infants in their hands, lest
- 26:16Speaker 1: perchance their tender feet should be hurt, being as yet
- 26:20Speaker 1: unable to walk over the hard road. So also the
- 26:25Speaker 1: rational powers do not permit those who are as yet
- 26:28Speaker 1: unable to labor and whose understanding is still childish to
- 26:33Speaker 1: toil beyond their strength, but snatched them out of every
- 26:37Speaker 1: temptation four fourteen. And Jesus returned in the power of
- 26:44Speaker 1: the Spirit, and too Galilee. Having left the habitations of cities,
- 26:51Speaker 1: he dwelt in deserts. There he fasted, being tempted of Satan.
- 26:56Speaker 1: There he gained victory in our behalf. There he crushed
- 27:01Speaker 1: the heads of the dragons. There, as the Blessed David says,
- 27:06Speaker 1: the swords of the enemy utterly failed, and cities were destroyed,
- 27:11Speaker 1: that is, those who were like towers and cities. Having
- 27:16Speaker 1: therefore mightily prevailed over Satan, and having crowned in his
- 27:20Speaker 1: own person man's nature, with the spoils won by the
- 27:24Speaker 1: victory over him, he returned into Galilee in the power
- 27:28Speaker 1: of the Spirit, both exercising might and authority, and performing
- 27:33Speaker 1: very many miracles and occasioning great astonishment. And he wrought miracles,
- 27:40Speaker 1: not as having received the grace of the Spirit from
- 27:44Speaker 1: without and as a gift, like the company of the saints,
- 27:49Speaker 1: but rather as being by nature and in truth, the
- 27:52Speaker 1: son of God the Father, and taking whatever is his
- 27:57Speaker 1: as his own proper inheritance. Or he even said unto
- 28:01Speaker 1: him that all that is mine is thine, and thine mine,
- 28:07Speaker 1: and I am glorified in them. He is glorified therefore
- 28:11Speaker 1: by exercising as his own proper might and power that
- 28:16Speaker 1: of the consubstantial Spirit. End of Sermon twelve, Part one,
- 28:28Speaker 1: Sermon twelve, Part two. Commentary on the Gospel of Luke
- 28:32Speaker 1: Sermons twelve through twenty five by Cyril of Alexandria, translated
- 28:37Speaker 1: by R. Pain Smith. This LibriVox recording is in the
- 28:41Speaker 1: public domain. Four sixteen. And he came to Nazareth and
- 28:48Speaker 1: entered into the synagogue, since therefore it was now necessary
- 28:54Speaker 1: that he should manifest himself to the Israelites, and that
- 28:58Speaker 1: the mystery of his incarnation should now shine forth to
- 29:02Speaker 1: those who knew him not. And inasmuch as he was
- 29:06Speaker 1: now anointed of God the Father for the salvation of
- 29:09Speaker 1: the world, he very wisely orders this also, that is
- 29:14Speaker 1: to say, that his fame should now spread abroad. And
- 29:19Speaker 1: this favor he grants first to the people of Nazareth,
- 29:23Speaker 1: because humanly speaking, he had been brought up among them.
- 29:28Speaker 1: Having entered therefore the synagogue, he takes the book to read, and,
- 29:33Speaker 1: having opened it, selected a passage in the prophets which
- 29:37Speaker 1: declares the mystery concerning him, And by these words he
- 29:42Speaker 1: most plainly himself tells us by the voice of the prophet,
- 29:46Speaker 1: that he both would be made man and come to
- 29:50Speaker 1: save the world. For we affirm that the Son was
- 29:54Speaker 1: anointed in no other way than by having become according
- 29:58Speaker 1: to the flesh such as we are, and taken our nature.
- 30:03Speaker 1: For being at once God and man. He both gives
- 30:07Speaker 1: the spirit to the creation in his divine nature and
- 30:12Speaker 1: receives it from God the Father in his human nature.
- 30:16Speaker 1: While it is he who sanctifies the whole creation, both
- 30:21Speaker 1: as having shown forth from the Holy Father, and as
- 30:25Speaker 1: bestowing the spirit, which he himself pours forth both upon
- 30:30Speaker 1: the powers above is that which is his own, and
- 30:33Speaker 1: upon those moreover who recognized his appearing four eighteen. The
- 30:41Speaker 1: Spirit of the Lord is upon me. Therefore he hath
- 30:45Speaker 1: anointed me, he hath sent me to preach the Gospel
- 30:48Speaker 1: to the poor. He plainly shows by these words that
- 30:53Speaker 1: he took upon him the humiliation and submission to the
- 30:57Speaker 1: emptying of his glory, and both the very name of
- 31:02Speaker 1: Christ and the reality for our sakes. For the spirit,
- 31:06Speaker 1: he says, which by nature is in me, by the
- 31:10Speaker 1: sameness of our substance and deity also descended upon me
- 31:15Speaker 1: from without, And so also in the Jordan it came
- 31:19Speaker 1: upon me in the form of a dove, not because
- 31:23Speaker 1: it was not in me, but for the reason for
- 31:26Speaker 1: which he anointed me. And what was the reason for
- 31:30Speaker 1: which he chose to be anointed. It was our being
- 31:34Speaker 1: destitute of the spirit by that denunciation of old. My
- 31:39Speaker 1: spirit shall not abide in these men, because they are flesh.
- 31:45Speaker 1: These words, the incarnate word of God speaks for being
- 31:50Speaker 1: very God, of very God, the Father, and having become
- 31:54Speaker 1: for our sake's man without undergoing change with us, he
- 31:59Speaker 1: is annoyingted with the oil of gladness, the Spirit having
- 32:03Speaker 1: descended upon him at the Jordan in the form of
- 32:07Speaker 1: a dove. For in old time both kings and priests
- 32:11Speaker 1: were anointed symbolically, gaining thereby a certain measure of sanctification.
- 32:17Speaker 1: But he who for our sakes became incarnate was anointed
- 32:22Speaker 1: with the spiritual oil of sanctification and the actual descent
- 32:27Speaker 1: of the Spirit, receiving it not for himself but for us.
- 32:33Speaker 1: For inasmuch as the Spirit had taken its flight and
- 32:37Speaker 1: not made his abode in us because of our being flesh.
- 32:41Speaker 1: The earth was full of grief, being deprived of the
- 32:44Speaker 1: participation of God. And he proclaimed also deliverance to captives,
- 32:51Speaker 1: which also he accomplished by having bound the strong one Satan,
- 32:56Speaker 1: who in tyrant fashion lorded it over our race, and
- 33:00Speaker 1: having torn away from him us his goods. As the
- 33:06Speaker 1: words he anointed me befit the manhood, for it is
- 33:11Speaker 1: not the divine nature which is anointed, but that which
- 33:14Speaker 1: is akin to us. So also the words he sent
- 33:18Speaker 1: me are to be referred to that which is human.
- 33:23Speaker 1: Those also whose heart was of old obscured by the
- 33:27Speaker 1: darkness of the devil, he has illuminated by rising as
- 33:31Speaker 1: some sun of righteousness and making them the children no
- 33:35Speaker 1: longer of night and darkness, but of light and day,
- 33:40Speaker 1: according to Paul's word. And those who were blind, for
- 33:45Speaker 1: the Apostate had blinded their hearts, have recovered their sight
- 33:50Speaker 1: and acknowledged the truth. And as Isaiah says, their darkness
- 33:55Speaker 1: has become light. That is, the ignorant have become wise.
- 34:00Speaker 1: Those that once were in error have known the paths
- 34:04Speaker 1: of righteousness. And the Father also says, somewhere unto the
- 34:08Speaker 1: sun himself, I have given thee for a covenant of kindred,
- 34:14Speaker 1: for a light of the gentiles, to open the eyes
- 34:17Speaker 1: of the blind, to bring out the prisoners from their bonds,
- 34:22Speaker 1: and from the guard house those that sit in darkness.
- 34:26Speaker 1: For the only Begotten came into this world and gave
- 34:30Speaker 1: a new covenant to his kindred, the Israelites, of whom
- 34:34Speaker 1: he was sprung according to the flesh, even the covenant
- 34:38Speaker 1: long before announced by the voice of the prophets. But
- 34:42Speaker 1: the divine and heavenly light shone also upon the gentiles,
- 34:46Speaker 1: and he went and preached to the spirits in hades,
- 34:50Speaker 1: and showed himself to those who were shut up in
- 34:52Speaker 1: the guard house, and freed all from their bonds and violence.
- 34:58Speaker 1: And how do not these things plainly proved that Christ
- 35:01Speaker 1: is both God and of God by nature. And what
- 35:07Speaker 1: means the sending away the broken in freedom? It is
- 35:11Speaker 1: the letting those go free whom Satan had broken by
- 35:14Speaker 1: the rod of spiritual violence. And what means the preaching
- 35:18Speaker 1: the acceptable year of the Lord. It signifies the joyful
- 35:23Speaker 1: tidings of his own advent, that the time of the Lord,
- 35:27Speaker 1: even the Son had arrived, For that was the acceptable
- 35:32Speaker 1: year in which Christ was crucified in our behalf, because
- 35:37Speaker 1: we then were made acceptable unto God the Father, as
- 35:41Speaker 1: the fruit borne by him. Wherefore he said, when I
- 35:46Speaker 1: am lifted up from the earth, I shall draw all
- 35:49Speaker 1: men unto myself. And verily he returned to life the
- 35:54Speaker 1: third day, having trampled upon the power of death, after
- 35:58Speaker 1: which he said to his dece disciples, all power has
- 36:02Speaker 1: been given me et cetera. That too, is in every
- 36:07Speaker 1: respect and acceptable year in which, being received into his family,
- 36:12Speaker 1: we were admitted unto him, having washed away sin by
- 36:16Speaker 1: holy baptism, and been made partakers of his divine nature
- 36:21Speaker 1: by the communion of the Holy Ghost. That too is
- 36:25Speaker 1: an acceptable year in which he manifested his glory by
- 36:29Speaker 1: ineffable miracles. For with joy have we accepted the season
- 36:34Speaker 1: of his salvation, which also the very wise Paul referred to, saying,
- 36:40Speaker 1: behold now is the acceptable time. Behold now is the
- 36:45Speaker 1: day of salvation, the day when the poor who erewhile
- 36:50Speaker 1: were sick by the absence of every blessing, having no
- 36:54Speaker 1: hope and being without God in the world, such as
- 36:57Speaker 1: were the gentiles, were made rich by faith in Him,
- 37:02Speaker 1: gaining the divine and heavenly treasure of the Gospel message
- 37:06Speaker 1: of salvation, by which they have been made partakers of
- 37:10Speaker 1: the Kingdom of Heaven, co partners with the saints and
- 37:15Speaker 1: heirs of blessing, such as neither the mind can conceive
- 37:19Speaker 1: nor language tell, For I it saith hath not seen,
- 37:24Speaker 1: and ear hath not heard. Neither have entered into the
- 37:28Speaker 1: heart of man the things that God hath prepared for
- 37:32Speaker 1: them that love Him. Though it may also be true
- 37:36Speaker 1: that the text here speaks of the abundant supply of
- 37:39Speaker 1: graces bestowed by Christ upon the poor in spirit, but
- 37:45Speaker 1: by the bruised in heart, he means those who have
- 37:49Speaker 1: a weak and yielding mind, unable to resist the attacks
- 37:53Speaker 1: of their passions, and so carried along by them as
- 37:58Speaker 1: to seem to be captives. To these he promises both
- 38:02Speaker 1: healing and forgiveness. And to those who are blind he
- 38:07Speaker 1: gives the recovering of sight. For those who serve the
- 38:11Speaker 1: creature instead of the Creator, and say to the wood,
- 38:15Speaker 1: thou art my father, and to the stone, thou hast
- 38:19Speaker 1: begotten me without recognizing him who is by nature and
- 38:24Speaker 1: in truth God, How can they be aught else than
- 38:28Speaker 1: blind seeing? They have a heart devoid of the light,
- 38:33Speaker 1: that is divine and spiritual, And on these the Father
- 38:37Speaker 1: bestows the light of the true knowledge of God. For
- 38:41Speaker 1: they are called through faith and acknowledge Him, or rather
- 38:45Speaker 1: are acknowledged of Him. And whereas they were children of
- 38:50Speaker 1: night and darkness, they have been made children of light,
- 38:54Speaker 1: for the day has shone upon them, and the Son
- 38:57Speaker 1: of Righteousness has arisen, and the bright morning star has dawned.
- 39:03Speaker 1: There is no objection, however, to anyone's referring all these
- 39:08Speaker 1: declarations to the Israelites. For they were poor and crushed
- 39:13Speaker 1: in heart, and so to speak, prisoners and in darkness.
- 39:19Speaker 1: For there was not upon earth that was doing good,
- 39:22Speaker 1: not even one, but all had turned aside. Together they
- 39:27Speaker 1: had become unprofitable. But Christ came preaching to the Israelites
- 39:33Speaker 1: before all others the glories of his advent, and like
- 39:38Speaker 1: to their maladies were those of the gentiles. But they
- 39:42Speaker 1: have been redeemed by Him, having been enriched with his
- 39:45Speaker 1: wisdom and endowed with understanding. And no longer is their
- 39:51Speaker 1: mind weak and broken, but healthy and strong, and ready
- 39:55Speaker 1: to receive and practice every good in saving work. For
- 39:59Speaker 1: in this error they have need of wisdom and understanding,
- 40:03Speaker 1: who in their great folly worship the creature instead of
- 40:07Speaker 1: the Creator, and inscribed stocks and stones with the name
- 40:11Speaker 1: of gods. But those who long ago lived in gloom
- 40:15Speaker 1: and darkness because they knew not Christ, now acknowledge him
- 40:20Speaker 1: as their God. These words having been read to the
- 40:25Speaker 1: assembled people, he drew upon himself the eyes of all, wondering,
- 40:30Speaker 1: perhaps how he knew letters who had not learnt. For
- 40:34Speaker 1: it was the want of the Israelites to say that
- 40:38Speaker 1: the prophecies concerning Christ were fulfilled either in the persons
- 40:43Speaker 1: of some of their more glorious kings, or at all events,
- 40:46Speaker 1: in the holy prophets. For not correctly understanding what was
- 40:51Speaker 1: written of him, they missed the true direction and traveled
- 40:55Speaker 1: on another path. But that they might not again thus
- 41:00Speaker 1: misinterpret the present prophecy, he carefully guards against error by saying,
- 41:06Speaker 1: this day, is this prophecy fulfilled in your ears, expressly
- 41:11Speaker 1: setting himself before them in these words as the person
- 41:15Speaker 1: spoken of in the prophecy. For it was he who
- 41:19Speaker 1: preached the Kingdom of Heaven to the heathen, who were poor,
- 41:23Speaker 1: having nothing neither God, nor law nor prophets. Or rather
- 41:29Speaker 1: he preached it unto all who were destitute of spiritual riches.
- 41:34Speaker 1: The captives he set free, having overthrown the apostate tyrant Satan,
- 41:40Speaker 1: and himself shed the divine and spiritual light on those
- 41:44Speaker 1: whose heart was darkened, for which reason he said, I
- 41:49Speaker 1: am come a light into this world. It was he
- 41:52Speaker 1: who unbound the chains of sin from those whose heart
- 41:56Speaker 1: was crushed, thereby who clearly showed that there is a
- 42:00Speaker 1: life to come, and denounced the just judgment. Finally, it
- 42:06Speaker 1: was he who preached the acceptable year of the Lord,
- 42:10Speaker 1: even that in which the Saviour's proclamation was made. For
- 42:15Speaker 1: by the acceptable year, I think is meant his first coming,
- 42:19Speaker 1: and by the day of restitution, the day of judgment
- 42:25Speaker 1: four eleven. And all bear him witness and wondered, for
- 42:31Speaker 1: not understanding him who had been anointed and sent, and
- 42:36Speaker 1: who was the author of works so wonderful, they returned
- 42:40Speaker 1: to their usual ways and talk foolishly and vainly concerning him.
- 42:46Speaker 1: For although they had wondered at the words of grace
- 42:48Speaker 1: that proceeded out of his mouth, yet their wish was
- 42:52Speaker 1: to treat them as valueless. For they said, is not
- 42:57Speaker 1: this the son of Joseph? But what does this diminish
- 43:01Speaker 1: from the glory of the worker of the miracles. What
- 43:05Speaker 1: prevents him from being both to be venerated and admired,
- 43:09Speaker 1: even had he been as was supposed, The son of
- 43:13Speaker 1: Joseph seest thou not the miracles, Satan fallen, the herds
- 43:19Speaker 1: of devils vanquished, multitudes set free from various kinds of maladies.
- 43:25Speaker 1: Thou praisest the grace that was present in his teachings.
- 43:29Speaker 1: And then dost thou, in Jewish fashion think lightly of
- 43:34Speaker 1: him because he accounted Joseph for his father O great senselessness?
- 43:41Speaker 1: True is it to say of them lo a people
- 43:45Speaker 1: foolish and without understanding? They have eyes and see not ears,
- 43:50Speaker 1: and hear not four twenty three ye will altogether say
- 43:57Speaker 1: unto me this parable. This was a common saying among
- 44:02Speaker 1: the Jews, and had its origin in a witticism, for
- 44:06Speaker 1: when physicians were themselves ill, men would say, physician, healed
- 44:12Speaker 1: thyself Christ. Therefore, setting before them as it were, this
- 44:17Speaker 1: proverb said, unto them, you wish for many signs to
- 44:21Speaker 1: be wrought by me among you, especially in whose country
- 44:25Speaker 1: I was brought up. But I know the common feeling
- 44:28Speaker 1: to which all men are liable for always somehow or other,
- 44:33Speaker 1: even the choicest things are despised when there is no
- 44:37Speaker 1: scarcity of them, and people have them in abundance. And
- 44:42Speaker 1: so too is the case with men, for his acquaintance
- 44:45Speaker 1: will oftentimes refuse one with whom they are familiar, and
- 44:50Speaker 1: who is constantly among them, even the honor which is due.
- 44:55Speaker 1: He rebuked them, therefore, for asking so foolishly? Is not this?
- 45:00Speaker 1: The son of Joseph, and still keeping to the object
- 45:04Speaker 1: of his teaching, says, verily, verily, I say unto you
- 45:08Speaker 1: that no prophet is acceptable in his country four twenty five.
- 45:16Speaker 1: There were many widows in the days of Elias, For since,
- 45:20Speaker 1: as I half mentioned, certain of the Jews affirmed that
- 45:24Speaker 1: the prophecies relating to Christ had been accomplished, either in
- 45:28Speaker 1: the Holy prophets or in certain of their own more
- 45:32Speaker 1: distinguished men. He for their good, draws them away from
- 45:36Speaker 1: such a supposition by saying that Alias had been sent
- 45:40Speaker 1: to a single widow, and that the prophet Eliseevs had
- 45:45Speaker 1: healed but one leper name and the Syrian, by these
- 45:49Speaker 1: signifying the Church of the Heathen, who were about to
- 45:53Speaker 1: accept him and be healed of their leprosy. By reason
- 45:57Speaker 1: of Israel remaining impenitent four twenty eight, and all in
- 46:03Speaker 1: the synagogue were filled with anger. They then were inflamed
- 46:08Speaker 1: with anger because he had branded their wicked thought. And
- 46:12Speaker 1: also he had said, to day, is this scripture fulfilled?
- 46:17Speaker 1: Namely that the spirit of the Lord is upon me?
- 46:22Speaker 1: For they considered that he made himself equal to the prophets. Moreover,
- 46:27Speaker 1: they cast him out of their city, decreeing thereby their
- 46:31Speaker 1: own condemnation and confirming what the Savior had said, For
- 46:36Speaker 1: they themselves were banished from the city that is above,
- 46:40Speaker 1: for not having received Christ, and that he might not
- 46:44Speaker 1: convict them of impiety. In words, merely, he permitted their
- 46:48Speaker 1: audacity against himself to proceed even unto deeds, for their
- 46:54Speaker 1: violence was unreasonable and their envy untamed. Leading him therefore
- 47:00Speaker 1: to the brow of the hill. They endeavored to throw
- 47:03Speaker 1: him from the crags. But he went through the midst
- 47:07Speaker 1: of them without taking any notice, so to say, of
- 47:10Speaker 1: their attempt, not as refusing to suffer, for for this
- 47:15Speaker 1: reason he had even come, but as awaiting a suitable time,
- 47:21Speaker 1: for it was now the commencement of his preaching, and
- 47:24Speaker 1: it would have been unseasonable to have suffered before he
- 47:28Speaker 1: had proclaimed the word of truth, for it depended on
- 47:31Speaker 1: him to suffer or not to suffer. For he is
- 47:35Speaker 1: lord of times as well as of things. And this
- 47:39Speaker 1: is a proof that when he suffered, he suffered voluntarily,
- 47:43Speaker 1: and that neither then could he have suffered had he
- 47:47Speaker 1: not yielded himself there too four thirty one, and he
- 47:53Speaker 1: went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. Those whom
- 47:58Speaker 1: argument cannot bring to the sure knowledge of Him, who,
- 48:02Speaker 1: by nature and in truth is God and Lord, may
- 48:06Speaker 1: perhaps be won by miracles unto a docile obedience. And
- 48:10Speaker 1: therefore usefully, or rather necessarily, he oftentimes completes his lessons
- 48:17Speaker 1: by proceeding to the performance of some mighty work. For
- 48:21Speaker 1: the inhabitants of Judea were unready to believe and slighted
- 48:26Speaker 1: the words of those who called them to salvation, and
- 48:30Speaker 1: especially the people of Capernium had this character, for which
- 48:34Speaker 1: reason the Savior reproved them, saying, and thou Capernium, that
- 48:40Speaker 1: art exalted unto Heaven, shalt be brought down unto hell.
- 48:46Speaker 1: But although he knows them to be both disobedient and
- 48:50Speaker 1: heart of heart, nevertheless he visits them, as a most
- 48:54Speaker 1: excellent physician would those who were suffering under a very
- 48:58Speaker 1: dangerous disease, and endeavors to rid them of their malady.
- 49:03Speaker 1: For he says himself that those who are in health
- 49:07Speaker 1: have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.
- 49:11Speaker 1: He taught therefore in their synagogues with great freedom of speech.
- 49:16Speaker 1: For this he had foretold by the voice of Isaiah,
- 49:19Speaker 1: saying I have not spoken in secret, nor in a
- 49:23Speaker 1: dark place of the earth. The Holy apostles. Moreover, he
- 49:28Speaker 1: even commanded to publish their words concerning him with full
- 49:33Speaker 1: boldness of speech, saying, what I tell you in darkness,
- 49:38Speaker 1: speak ye in the light, and what ye have heard
- 49:42Speaker 1: whispered into the ear, proclaim upon the housetops. On the sabbath. Also,
- 49:49Speaker 1: when they were at leisure from labor, he conversed with them.
- 49:53Speaker 1: They therefore wondered at the power of his teaching and
- 49:57Speaker 1: at the greatness of his authority. For the word, it says,
- 50:01Speaker 1: was with authority, for he used not flatteries, but urged
- 50:07Speaker 1: them to salvation. For the Jews indeed thought that Christ
- 50:11Speaker 1: was nothing more than one of the saints, and that
- 50:14Speaker 1: he had appeared among them in prophetic rank only, but
- 50:19Speaker 1: that they might entertain a higher opinion and idea concerning him.
- 50:23Speaker 1: He exceeds the prophetic measure. For he never said, thus
- 50:29Speaker 1: saith the Lord, as of course was their custom. But
- 50:33Speaker 1: as being the Lord of the law, he spake things
- 50:36Speaker 1: that surpassed the law. God moreover said by Isaiah, and
- 50:43Speaker 1: I will make with them an everlasting covenant, even the
- 50:47Speaker 1: holy the sure things of David. Behold. I have given
- 50:51Speaker 1: him as a testimony among the gentiles, a ruler and
- 50:56Speaker 1: commander of the gentiles. For it was fitting that Moses,
- 51:01Speaker 1: as a servant, should be the minister of the shadow
- 51:04Speaker 1: that endureth not. But Christ, I affirm, was the eternal
- 51:09Speaker 1: publisher of a lasting and abiding worship. And what is
- 51:14Speaker 1: the eternal covenant. It means the sacred prophecies of Christ,
- 51:19Speaker 1: who is of David seed according to the flesh, and
- 51:23Speaker 1: which produce in us holiness and surreness. Just as also
- 51:29Speaker 1: the fear of God is pure because it makes us pure.
- 51:34Speaker 1: And the Word of the Gospel is life because it
- 51:38Speaker 1: produces life. For the words he says that I have
- 51:42Speaker 1: spoken unto your spirit and life that is spiritual and
- 51:48Speaker 1: life giving. But mark well the exactness of the prophecy. Isaiah,
- 51:54Speaker 1: speaking as in the person of God the Father. Concerning Christ, says,
- 52:00Speaker 1: I have given him as a testimony unto the gentiles,
- 52:04Speaker 1: that is, to bear witness unto them, that these things
- 52:08Speaker 1: are acceptable. That no one may imagine him to be
- 52:13Speaker 1: one of the holy prophets, but that all mankind may
- 52:17Speaker 1: rather know that he is radiant with the glory of lordship.
- 52:23Speaker 1: For being God, he appeared unto us. And so he
- 52:27Speaker 1: goes on to say, not merely that he was given
- 52:31Speaker 1: for a testimony, but also as a ruler and commander
- 52:35Speaker 1: of the gentiles, for the blessed prophets, and before them,
- 52:40Speaker 1: even Moses, holding the station of servants, ever called out
- 52:44Speaker 1: to their hearers. Thus saith the Lord, not as being
- 52:49Speaker 1: so much commanders as ministers of the divine words. But
- 52:54Speaker 1: our Lord Jesus Christ spake words most worthy of God,
- 52:59Speaker 1: and was therefore admired even by the Jews themselves, because
- 53:04Speaker 1: his word was with authority, and because he taught them
- 53:08Speaker 1: as one that had authority, and not as their scribes.
- 53:13Speaker 1: For his word was not of the shadow of the law,
- 53:17Speaker 1: but as being himself the lawgiver. He changed the letter
- 53:21Speaker 1: into the truth and the types into their spiritual meaning.
- 53:26Speaker 1: For he was a ruler and possessed a ruler's authority
- 53:29Speaker 1: to command four thirty five, and Jesus rebuked him with
- 53:37Speaker 1: godlike power. He rebuked the unclean spirits, making the miracle
- 53:42Speaker 1: follow immediately upon his words, that we might not disbelieve.
- 53:48Speaker 1: We have seen the guilty Satan overcome by him in
- 53:51Speaker 1: the wilderness and broken by three falls. We have seen
- 53:56Speaker 1: his might again shaken, and the power that was against
- 54:00Speaker 1: us falling. We have seen ourselves rebuking the wicked spirits
- 54:04Speaker 1: in Christ as our first fruits. For that this also
- 54:09Speaker 1: has reference to the ennoblement of human nature. Thou mayest
- 54:14Speaker 1: learn from the Saviour's own words, For the Jews indeed
- 54:18Speaker 1: maligned his glory and even said, this man casteth not
- 54:23Speaker 1: out devils, except in Beelzebub, prince of the devils. But
- 54:28Speaker 1: he in answer, having first said much, and too the
- 54:32Speaker 1: purpose ended by declaring, But if I, in the spirit
- 54:36Speaker 1: of God, cast out devils, then has the Kingdom of
- 54:40Speaker 1: God come upon you unawares? For if says he, I,
- 54:46Speaker 1: who have become a man like unto you, tried the
- 54:50Speaker 1: unclean spirits with godlike power and majesty, it is your
- 54:55Speaker 1: nature which is crowned with this great glory, for ye
- 54:59Speaker 1: are seen both through me and in me, to have
- 55:02Speaker 1: gained the Kingdom of God. The evil demons therefore were
- 55:08Speaker 1: cast doubt and made moreover to feel how invincible is
- 55:12Speaker 1: his might, And being unable to bear the conflict with deity,
- 55:18Speaker 1: they exclaimed, in imperious and crafty terms, let us alone,
- 55:23Speaker 1: what is there between us and thee? Meaning thereby, why
- 55:28Speaker 1: dost thou not permit us to keep our place whilst
- 55:32Speaker 1: thou art destroying the error of impiety. But they further
- 55:37Speaker 1: put on the false appearance of well sounding words and
- 55:40Speaker 1: call him the Holy One of God. For they supposed
- 55:45Speaker 1: that by this specious kind of language they could excite
- 55:48Speaker 1: the desire of vinglory and thereby prevent his rebuking them, returning,
- 55:54Speaker 1: as it were, one kindness for another. But though he
- 55:58Speaker 1: be crafty, he will his prey, for God is not mocked.
- 56:04Speaker 1: And so the Lord stops their impure tongues and commands
- 56:08Speaker 1: them to depart from those possessed by them. And the bystanders,
- 56:13Speaker 1: being made witnesses of so great deeds, were astonished at
- 56:17Speaker 1: the power of his word, for he wrought his miracles,
- 56:21Speaker 1: offering up no prayer to ask of any one else
- 56:25Speaker 1: at all the power of accomplishing them, but being himself,
- 56:30Speaker 1: the living and active Word of God, the Father by
- 56:33Speaker 1: whom all things exist, and in whom all things are.
- 56:38Speaker 1: In his own person, he crushed Satan and closed the
- 56:43Speaker 1: profane mouth of impure demons. End of Sermon twelve, Part two,
- 56:56Speaker 1: Sermon twelve, Part three, Commentary on the Gospel of Luke
- 57:00Speaker 1: Sermons twelve through twenty five by Cyril of Alexandria, translated
- 57:05Speaker 1: by R. Painsmith. This LibriVox recording is in the public domain.
- 57:12Speaker 1: Four thirty eight. He entered into Simon's house. Observe therefore,
- 57:18Speaker 1: how he who endured voluntary poverty for our sakes, that we,
- 57:23Speaker 1: by his poverty might become rich, lodged with one of
- 57:27Speaker 1: his disciples, a man poor and living in obscurity, that
- 57:33Speaker 1: we might learn to seek the company of the humble,
- 57:36Speaker 1: and not to boast ourselves over those in want and affliction.
- 57:41Speaker 1: Jesus arrives at Simon's house and finds his wife's mother
- 57:45Speaker 1: sick of a fever. And he stood and rebuked the fever,
- 57:50Speaker 1: and it left her. Now in what is said by
- 57:53Speaker 1: Matthew and Mark, that the fever left her. There is
- 57:57Speaker 1: no hint of any living thing as the active cause
- 58:01Speaker 1: of the fever, But in Luke's phrase that he stood
- 58:06Speaker 1: over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her.
- 58:10Speaker 1: I do not know whether we are not compelled to
- 58:13Speaker 1: say that that which was rebuked with some living thing
- 58:17Speaker 1: unable to sustain the influence of him who rebuked it.
- 58:22Speaker 1: For it is not reasonable to rebuke a thing without
- 58:25Speaker 1: life and unconscious of the rebuke. Nor is it anything
- 58:30Speaker 1: astonishing for there to exist certain powers that inflict harm
- 58:35Speaker 1: on the human body. Nor must we necessarily think evil
- 58:39Speaker 1: of the soul of those who thus suffer for being
- 58:43Speaker 1: harmed by these beings. For neither when the devil obtained
- 58:48Speaker 1: authority to tempt Joe by bodily torments and struck him
- 58:53Speaker 1: with painful ulcers, was job therefore to be found fault with,
- 58:58Speaker 1: For he manfully contents and nobly endured the blow. God grant, however,
- 59:05Speaker 1: that it be said, if at any time we are
- 59:08Speaker 1: tempted by bodily pains, but touch not his soul the Lord,
- 59:13Speaker 1: then by a rebuke heals those who are possessed. He
- 59:18Speaker 1: laid also his hands upon the sick one by one,
- 59:22Speaker 1: and freed them from their malady, so demonstrating that the
- 59:26Speaker 1: holy flesh, which he had made his own and endowed
- 59:30Speaker 1: with god like power, possessed the active presence of the
- 59:35Speaker 1: might of the Word, intending us thereby to learn that
- 59:39Speaker 1: though the only begoden Word of God became like unto us,
- 59:44Speaker 1: yet even so is he none the less God, and
- 59:48Speaker 1: able easily even by his own flesh, to accomplish all things.
- 59:54Speaker 1: For by it as his instrument he wrought miracles. Nor
- 59:59Speaker 1: is there any reason for great wonder at this. But
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: consider on the contrary, how fire, when placed in a
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: brazen vessel, communicates to it the power of producing the
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: effects of heat. So therefore the all powerful Word of God, also,
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: having joined by a real union under himself the living
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: and intelligent Temple taken from the Holy Virgin, endowed it
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: with the power of actively exerting his own god like
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: might to put to shame. Therefore, the Jews, he says,
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: if I do not the works of my Father, believe
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: me not. But if I do, though ye believe not me,
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: believe my works. We may therefore see with the truth itself,
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: witnessing there too that the only Begotten gave not his
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: glory as to a man taken separately and depart by himself,
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: and regarded as the woman's offspring, but as being the
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: one only son, with the Holy body united to him,
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: he wrought the miracles and is worshiped also by the
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: creation as God. He entered then into Peter's house, where
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: a woman was lying stretched upon a bed, exhausted with
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: a violent fever. And when he might, as God have said,
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: put away the disease arise, he adopted a different course
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: of action, for as a proof that his own flesh
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: possessed the power of healing, as being the flesh of God,
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: he touched her hand, and forthwith it, says, the fever
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: left her. Let us therefore also receive Jesus, for when
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: he has entered into us, and we have received him
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: into mind and heart, then he will quench the fever
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: of unbefitting pleasures, and raise us up and make us
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: strong even in things spiritual. So as for us to
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: minister unto him by performing those things that please him.
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: But observe again, I pray, how great is the efficacy
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: of the touch of His Holy flesh, For it both
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: drives away diseases of various kinds, and a crowd of demons,
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: and overthrows the power of the devil, and heals a
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: very great multitude of people in one moment of time.
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: And though able to perform these miracles by a word
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: and the inclination of his will, yet to teach us
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: something useful for us, he also lays his hands upon
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: the sick, for it was necessary, most necessary for us
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: to learn that the holy flesh, which he had made
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: his own, was endowed with the activity of the power
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: of the Word, by his having implanted in it a
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: godlike might. Let it then take hold of us, or rather,
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: let us take hold of it by the mystical giving
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: of thanks, that it may free us also from the
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: sicknesses of the soul and from the assault and violence
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: of demons four forty one. And rebuking them, he suffered
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: them not to speak. He would not permit the unclean
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: demons to confess him, for it was not fitting for
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: them to usurp the glory of the apostolic office, nor
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: with impure tongue to talk of the mystery of Christ. Yea,
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: though they speak aught that is true, let no one
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: put credence in them, For the light is not known
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: by the aid of darkness, as the Disciple of Christ
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: teaches us, where he says, for what communion hath light
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: with darkness? Or what consent hath Christ? With Beliard five two,
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: And he saw two ships standing by the lake, but
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: the fishermen were gone out of them and were washing
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: their nets. Let us admire the skillfulness of the method
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: employed in making them a prey, who were to make
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: prey of the whole earth. Even the Holy Apostles, who
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: though themselves well skilled in fishing, yet fell into Christ's meshes,
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: that they, also, letting down the dragnet of the Apostolic preachings,
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: might gather unto him the inhabitants of the whole world.
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: For verily he somewheeres sad by one of the holy prophets. Behold,
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: I send many fishers, saith the Lord, and they shall
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: catch them as fish. And afterwards words, I will send
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: many hunters, and they shall hunt them as game. By
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: the fishers he means the Holy Apostles, and by the
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: hunters those who successively became the rulers and teachers of
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: the holy churches, and observe. I pray that he not
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: only preaches, but also displays signs giving thereby pledges of
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: his power and confirming his words by the display of miracles.
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: For after he had sufficiently conversed with the multitudes, he
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: returns to his usual mighty works, and by means of
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: their pursuits as fishers, catches the disciples as fish, that
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: men may know that His will is almighty, and that
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: the creation ministers to his most godlike commands. Five four.
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: And when he had ceased speaking, he said an to Simon,
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: launch out into the deep, as he had now taught
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: them sufficiently, and it was fitting also to add some
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: divine work to his words for the benefit of the spectators.
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: He bade Simon and his companions push off a little
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: from the land and let down the net for a draft.
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: But they replied that they had been laboring the whole
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: night and had caught nothing. In the name. However, of Christ,
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: they let down the net, and immediately it was full
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: of fish. In order that by a visible fact and
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: by a type and representation miraculously enacted, they might be
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: fully convinced that their labor would not be unrewarded, nor
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: the zeal fruitless, which they displayed in spreading out the
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: net of the gospel teaching for that most certainly they
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: should catch within it the shoals of the heathen. But
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: observe this that neither Simon nor his companions could draw
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: the net to land. And therefore, being speechless from frightened
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: astonishment for their wonder had made them mute, they beckoned,
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: it says to their partners, those that is, who shared
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: their labors in fishing, to come and help them in
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: securing their prey. Fort Many have taken part with the
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: Holy Apostles in their laborers, and still do so, especially
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: such as search into the meaning of what is written
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: in the Holy Gospels, and others besides them, even the
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: pastors and teachers and rulers of the people, who are
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: skilled in the doctrines of truth. Fort still is the
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: net drawn, while Christ fills it and summons unto conversion
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: those in the depths of the sea, according to the
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: scripture phrase, those that is to say, who live in
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: the surge and waves of worldly things five eight. And
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: when Simon Peter saw it, for this reason also Peter
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: carried back to the memory of his former sins trembles
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: and is afraid and as being impure, ventures not to
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: receive Him who is pure and his fear was laudable,
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: for he had been taught by the law to distinguish
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: between the holy and the profane five twelve. And behold
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: a man full of leprosy. The faith, however, of him
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: who drew near, is worthy of all praise, for he
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: testifies that the Immanuel can successfully accomplish all things, and
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: seeks deliverance by his godlike commands. Although his malady was incurable,
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: for leprosy will not yield to the skill of physicians.
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: I see, however, his sai as the unclean demons expelled
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: by a godlike authority. I see others set free from
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: many diseases. I recognize that such things are wrought by
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: some divine and resistless force. I see further that He
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: is good and most ready to pity those who draw
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: near unto him. What therefore, forbids his taking pity on me? Also?
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: And what does Christ's answer? He confirms his faith and
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: produces full assurance upon this very point, for he accepts
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: his petition and confesses that he is able, and says,
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: I will be thou cleansed. He grants him also the
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: touch of his holy and all powerful hand, and immediately
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: the leprosy departed from him, and his affliction was at
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: an end. And in this join with me in wondering
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: at Christ, thus exercising at the same time both a
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: divine and a bodily power. For it was a divine act,
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: so too well as for all that he willed to
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: be present unto him, but to stretch out the hand
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: was a human act. Christ therefore is perceived to be
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: one of both. If, as is the case, the word
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: was made flesh five fourteen, and he charged him to
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: tell no man, even though the leper had been silent.
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: The very nature of the fact was enough to proclaim
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: to all who knew him, how great was his power,
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: who had wrought the cure? But he bids him tell
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: no man. And why that they who receive from God
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: the gift of working cures, may hereby learn not to
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: look for the applause of those whom they have healed,
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: nor indeed any one's pray raises whatsoever, lest they fall
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: a prey unto pride of all vices the most disgraceful.
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: He purposely, however, bids the leper offer unto the priests,
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: the gift according to the law of Moses. For it
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: was indeed confessedly his wish to put away the shadow
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: and transform the types unto a spiritual service. As the Jews, however,
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: because as yet they did not believe on him, attached
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: themselves to the commands of Moses, supposing their ancient customs
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: to be still in force. He gives leave to the
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: Leper to make the offering for a testimony unto them.
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: And what was his object in granting this permission? It
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: was because the Jews, using ever as a pretext their
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: respect for the law, and saying that the hierophant Moses
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: was the minister of a commandment from on high, made
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: their endeavor to treat with contempt Christ, the Savior of us. All.
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: They even said, plainly, we know that God spake unto Moses,
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: but this man we know not whence he is. It
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: was necessary therefore for them to be convinced by actual
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: facts that the measure of Moses is inferior to the
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: glory of Christ. For he, indeed, as a servant, was
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: faithful over his house, but the other as a son
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: over his father's house. From this very healing, then of
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: the Leper, we may most plainly see that Christ is
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: incomparably superior to the Mosaic law. For Meriam, the sister
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: of Moses, was herself struck with leprosy for speaking against him,
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: And at this Moses was greatly distressed, And when he
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: was unable to remove the disease from the woman, he
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: fell down before God, saying, O, God, I beseech thee
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: heal her. Observe this then carefully. On the one hand,
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: there was a request he sought by prayer to obtain
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: mercy from above. But the Savior of all spake with
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: godlike authority, I will be thou cleansed. The removal therefore
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: of the leprosy was a testimony to the priest, and
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: by it those who assigned the chief rank to Moses
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: may know that they are straying from the truth. For
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: it was fitting, even highly fitting, to regard Moses with
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: admiration as a minister of the law and servant of
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: the grace that was spoken of angels. But far greater
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: must be our admiration of the Immanuel and the glory.
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: We render him as very son of God the Father,
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: and whoever will may see the profound and mighty mystery
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: of Christ written for our benefit in Leviticus. For the
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: law of Moses declares the leper defiled and gives orders
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: for him to be put out of the camp as unclean.
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: But should the malady ever be alleviated, it commands that
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: he should then be capable of readmission. Moreover, it clearly
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: specifies the manner in which he is to be pronounced clean,
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: thus saying this is the law of the leper. On
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: whatsoever day, he shall have been cleansed, and shall be
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: brought unto the priest, And the priest shall go out
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: of the camp, and the priest shall see him, and
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: behold the touch of the leprosy is healed from the leper.
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: And the high priest shall command, and they shall take
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: for him who is cleansed, two living, clean birds, And
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: the high priest shall command, and they shall kill the
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: one into an earthen vessel over living water. And he
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: shall take the living bird and dip it into the
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: blood of the bird that was killed over the living water,
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: and shall sprinkle it seven times over the man cleansed
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: of the leprosy, and he shall be cleansed, and he
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: shall send away the living bird into the field. The
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: birds then are two in number, both without stain, that
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: is clean, and liable to no fault on the part
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: of the law, and the one of them is slain
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: over living water, but the other being saved from slaughter
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: and further baptized in the blood of that which died,
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: is let loose. This type then represents to us the
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: great and adorable mystery of our Savior. For the word
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: was from above, even from the Father, from heaven, for
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: which reason he is very fitly compared to a bird.
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: For though he came down for the dispensation's sake to
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: bear our likeness, and took the form of a slave,
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: yet even so he was from above. Yea, he even
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: when speaking to the Jews, said so plainly, ye are
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: from beneath. I am from above. And again no one
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: hath ascended up into heaven, but the Son of Man
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: that came down from heaven. As therefore I just now said,
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: even when he became flesh, that is perfect man, he
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: was not earthy, not made of clay, as we are,
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: but heavenly and superior to things worldly. In respect of
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: that wherein he is perceived to be God, we may
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: see then in the birds offered it the cleansing of
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: the leper Christ suffering. Indeed, in the flesh, according to
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: the scriptures, but remaining also beyond the power of suffering
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: and dying in his human nature, but living in his
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: divine For the Word is life. Yea. Too the very
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: wise disciples said that he was put to death in
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: the flesh, but made to live in the spirit. But
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: though the Word could not possibly admit the suffering of
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: death unto his own nature, yet he appropriates to himself
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: that which his flesh suffered. For the living bird was
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: baptized in the blood of the dead one, and thus
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: stained with blood, and all but made partaker of the passion.
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: It was sent forth into the wilderness. And so did
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: the only begauten Word of God return unto the heavens,
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: with the flesh united unto him. And strange was the
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: sight in heaven Yea. The throng of angels marvel when
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: they saw in form like unto us, the King of
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: Earth and Lord of Might. Moreover, they said, who is
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: this that cometh from Edom, meaning thereby the earth? The
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: redness of his garments is from Bossar, the interpretation of
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: which is flesh as being a narrowing and pressing. Then
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: to they inquired, are such the wounds in the middle
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: of thy hands, And he answered with these was I
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: wounded in the house of my beloved. For just as
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: after his return to life from the dead, when showing
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: with most wise purpose his hands unto Thomas, he bade
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: him handle both the prince of the nails and the
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: holes bored in his side, So also when arrived in
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: heaven he gave full proof to the holy angels that
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: Israel was just cast out and fallen from being of
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: his family. For this reason he showed his garments gained
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: with blood in the wounds in his hands, and not
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: as though he could not put them away, For when
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: he rose from the dead, he put off corruption, and
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: with it all its marks and attributes. He retained them.
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: Therefore that the manifold wisdom of God which he wrought
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: in Christ, might now be made known by the Church
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: according to the plan of salvation to principalities and powers.
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: But perhaps someone will say, how can you affirm that
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: Jesus Christ is one and the same son and Lord
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: when there were two birds offered? Does not the law
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: very plainly hereby show that there are certainly two sons
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: and Christ. Yes, verily, men have error now been brought
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: to such a pitch of impiety, as both to think
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: and say that the Word of God the Father is
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: one Christ, separately by himself, and that he who is
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: of the Seed of David is another. But we reply
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: to those who, in their ignorance imagine such to be
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: the case. What the Divine Paul writes, one Lord, one faith,
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: one baptism. If therefore they affirm that there are two sons,
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: necessarily there must be two Lords and two faiths, and
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: the same number of baptisms. And therefore, though he has
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: Christ speaking within him, as he himself affirms, yet will
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: his teaching be false? But this cannot be away with
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: such a thought. We therefore acknowledge one Lord, even the
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: only be God and incarnate Word of God, not putting
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: apart the manhood and the Godhead, but earnestly affirming that
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: the Word of God the Father himself became man, while
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: continuing to be God. And next, let those who hold
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: a contrary opinion be the speakers. If they say there
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: are two sons, one specially the Seed of David, and
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: the other again separately the Word of God the Father,
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: must not the Word of God the Father be superior
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: in nature to him of the seed of David. What
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: then shall we do in seeing the two birds not
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: distinct in nature from one another, but on the contrary,
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: of the same kind, and in no point, as regards
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: specific difference unlike one another. But they gain nothing by
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: their argument, for great is the distance between the Godhead
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: and the manhood. And in the explanation of examples we
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: are to understand them according to the fitting analogy, for
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: they fall short of the truth and often effect, but
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: a partial demonstration of the things signified by them. We
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: say moreover that the law was a sort of shadow
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: and type, and a painting, as it were, setting things
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: forth before the view of the spectators. But in the
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: pictorial art, the shadows are the foundations for the colors,
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: And when the bright hues of the colors have been
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: laid upon them, then at length the beauty of the
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: painting will flash forth, and in like manner. Since it
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: was fitting for the Law of Moses to delineate clearly
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: the mystery of Christ, it does not manifest him as
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: both dying and at the same time living in one
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: and the same bird, lest what was done should have
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: the look of a theatrical juggle. But it contained him
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: as suffering slaughtery the one bird, and in the other
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: displayed the same Christ as alive aunt set free. But
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: I will endeavor to show that my argument here does
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: not go beyond the bounds of probability by means of
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: another history. For were any one of our community to
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: wish to see the history of Abraham depict it as
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: in a painting, how would the artist represent him as
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: doing everything at once, or as in turn and variously
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: acting in many different modes, though all the while the
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: same one person. I mean, for instance, as at one
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: time sitting upon the ass, with the lad accompanying him
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: and the servants following behind. Then again the ass left,
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: with the servants Isaac laden with the wood, and himself
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: carrying in his hands the knife and the fire. Then
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: in another compartment, the same Abraham in a very different attitude,
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: with the lad bound upon the wood and his right
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: hand armed with a knife ready to strike the blow.
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: Yet it would not be a different Abraham in each place,
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: though represented in very many different forms in the painting,
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: but one and the same everywhere, the painter's art, conforming
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: itself constantly to the requirements of the things to be represented.
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: For it would be impossible in one representation to see
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: him performing all the above mentioned acts. So therefore the
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: law was a painting and type of things traveling with truth.
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: And therefore, even though there were two birds, yet was
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: he who was represented in both, but one as suffering
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: and free from suffering, as dying and superior to death,
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: and mounting up unto heaven, as a sort of second
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: first fruits of human nature renewed unto incorruption. For He
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: has made a new pathway for us unto that which
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: is above, and we, in due time shall follow him.
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: That the one bird then was slain, and that the
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: other was baptized, indeed in its blood, while itself exempt
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: from slaughter, typified what was really to happen. For Christ
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: died in our stead, and we who have been baptized
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: into his death, he has saved by his own blood.
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: End of Sermon twelve, Part three, Sermon twelve, Part four,
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: and fragments from Sermon twenty one. Commentary in the Gospel
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: of Luke Sermons twelve through twenty five by Cyril of Alexandria,
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: translated by R. Pain Smith. This LibriVox recording is in
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: the public domain five seventeen, and he himself was teaching,
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: and the Pharisees were sitting around him. Verily was a
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: company of the envious scribes, that is, and pharisees, who
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: were spectators of his wonderful works and listened as he taught.
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: And the power of God was present, it says, to
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: heal him. Is this spoken as though God gave him
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: the ability to perform the miracles, did he borrow of
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: another the power? But who would venture to affirm this? Rather,
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: it was he himself, working by his own power as
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: God and Lord, and not as partaker of some divine
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: grace for men. Indeed, often even after being counted worthy
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: of spiritual gifts, yet sometimes occasionally prove infirm according to
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: the proportion known to him who distributes these divine graces.
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: But in the case of the Savior of us all,
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: there was not such as this. But his power to
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: heal him was not a human power, but rather one
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: divine and irresistible, for he was God and the son
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: of God. Christ alone teaches as being the true teacher
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: and the wisdom of the Father, for all the rest
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: teaches receiving from him. And there was also, it says,
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: the power of the Lord upon him to heal all,
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: which means that his power to heal was not human,
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: but divine and irresistible. For the rest of the saints
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: at one time received the power to work cures, and
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: at another time not but Jesus, as being God and
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: the power of the Father, ever healed all five eighteen.
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: And behold certain bringing on a bed a man who
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: was a paralytic. When then no small number, as it says,
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: of scribes and pharisees, were assembled together, behold certain bringing
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: upon a bed a man who was paralytic, and not
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: being able to come in by the door, they carried
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: him up to the roof to attempt a strange and
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: novel deed. For having pulled up the tiling, they removed
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: the wood laid there. And still, while this was being done,
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: both Jesus waited patiently, and those who were present kept silence,
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: watching for the result, and wishing to see what he
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: would say and do. Having uncovered therefore the roof, they
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: let down the bed and lay the paralytic in the midst.
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: What then does the Lord do, having seen their faith,
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: not that of the paralytic, but of the bearers, For
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: it is possible for one to be healed by the
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: faith of others, or perceiving that the paralytic also believed
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: he healed him. It is possible, however, that the place
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: into which they let down the bed of the paralytic
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: through the tiles was open to the air, so that
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: they would not have at all to break up the roof.
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: But when the Saver says to him, man, thy sins
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: are forgiven thee, he addresses this generally to mankind, for
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: those who believe in him being healed of the diseases
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: of the soul will receive forgiveness of the sins which
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: formerly they had committed. Or he may mean this, I
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: must heal thy soul before I heal thy body. For
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: if this be not done by obtaining strength to walk,
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: thou dost but sin the more. And even though thou
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: hast not asked for this, yet I, as God see
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: the maladies of the soul which brought upon thee this disease.
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: And as it was necessary now that so large a
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: number of scribes and pharisees had assembled, that some especially
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: divine miracles should be wrought for their benefit, because of
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: the scorn with which they regarded him. Well does the
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: Savior provide again for them a most wonderful deed. For
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: there was stretched upon a bed a paralytic overcome with
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: an incurable disease, And as the art of the physicians
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: had proved altogether unavailing, he was carried by his relatives
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: to the physician, who is from above, even from Heaven.
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: And when he was in the presence of him who
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: is able to heal, his faith was accepted. And that
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: faith can take away sin. Christ immediately shows, for he
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: proclaims to him as he lay there, thy sins are
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: forgiven thee. Now, someone, i imagine, may say to this
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: what he wanted was to be delivered from his disease.
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: And why then does Christ announced to him the forgiveness
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: of his sin. It was that thou mayest learn that
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: God silently and noiselessly observes the affairs of men, and
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: watches the course of each one's life. And so it
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: is written, the paths of a man are before the
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: eyes of God, and he looks at all his tracks.
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: And as he is good and will willeth that all
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: men should be saved, He often purified those who are
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: entangled in sins by inflicting sickness upon their body. For
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: so he somewhere says, by the voice of Jeremiah, thou
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: shalt be taught o Jerusalem by labor and the scourge,
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: And the writer of the Book of Proverbs also has
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: somewhere said, my son, despise not thou the teaching of
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: the Lord, nor faint, when thou art convicted by him.
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth and scourgeth every
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: son whom he accepteth. Well. Therefore does Christ denounced that
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: he will cut away the cause of the disease, and
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: the very root, as it were, of the malady, even sin.
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: For if this be removed, necessarily, must the disease which
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: sprung from it be also at the same time taken
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: away five twenty one. And the scribes and Pharisees began
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: to reason, saying, He then, as was said, being endowed
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: with a most godlike authority, declared the forgiveness of sins.
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: But the declaration disturbs again the ignorant and envious gang
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: of the Pharisees, For they said, one to another, who
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: is this that speaketh blasphemies? But that would itst not
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: have said this of him, O Pharisee, If thou hadst
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: known the divine scriptures, and borne in mind the words
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: of Prophecy, and understood the adorable and mighty mystery of
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: the incarnation. But now they involve him in a charge
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: of blasphemy, determining against him the uttermost penalty and condemning
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: him to death. For the law of Moses command that
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: whoever spake blasphemies against God should suffer death. But no
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: sooner have they arrived at this height of daring than
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: He shows forthwith that He is God, to convict them
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: once more of intolerable impiety. For what saith He reason
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: ye in your hearts. If thou therefore, o Pharisee, sayest
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: who can forgive sins but one God? I will also
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: say to thee who can know hearts and see the
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: thoughts hidden in the depth of the understanding. But God only,
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: for he saith himself somewhere by the voice of the prophets,
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: I am the Lord that searcheth hearts and trieth reigns.
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: And David also said somewhere concerning both him and us,
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: he who singly formed their hearts. He therefore, who as
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: God God knows both the hearts and reins, as God
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: also forgives sins five twenty four, but that he may
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: know that the Son of Man hath power. But inasmuch
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: as a place still remains open for disbelief in saying
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: thy sins be forgiven thee for man sees not the
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: forgiven sins with the eyes of the body. Whereas the
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: putting off of the disease and the paralytics rising up
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: and walking carries with it a clear demonstration of a
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: godlike power. He adds, rise up and carry thy bed,
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: and go to thine house. And this was done, for
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: he returned unto his house, delivered from the infirmity under
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: which he had so long suffered. It is proved therefore
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: by the very fact that the Son of Man has
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: power on earth to forgive sins. But of whom says
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: he this is it of himself or also of us.
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: Both the one and the other are true. For he
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: forgives sins, as being the incarnate God, the Lord of
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: the law. And we two have received from him this
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: splendid and most admirable grace, for he hath crowned man's
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: nature with this great honor. Also having even said to
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: the Holy apostles, verily, I say unto you. Whatsoever things
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: ye bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: whatsoever things ye lose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: And again, whosesoever sins ye remit, they shall be remitted
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: unto them, and whosoever ye bind mind shall be bound.
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: And what is the occasion on which we find him
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: thus speaking unto them? It was after he had trampled
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: upon the power of death and risen from the grave,
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: when he breathed upon them and said, receive the Holy Ghost.
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: For having made them partakers of his nature and bestowed
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: upon them the indwelling of the Holy Ghost. He also
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: made them sharers of his glory by giving them power
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: both to remit and to bind sins. And as we
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: have been commanded to perform this very act, how must
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: not he much more himself remit? Since when he giveth
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: unto others authority to enable them to do so five
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: twenty seven. And he saw a publican named Levi. For
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: Levi was a publican, a man insatiable after filthy lucre,
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: of unbridled covetousness, careless of justice, and his eagerness after
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: what was not his own. For such was the character
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: of the publicans. Yet was he snatched from the very
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: workshop of iniquity and saved beyond hope at the call
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: of Christ, the Savior of us all. For he said
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: unto him, follow me, and he left all and followed him.
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: Seest thou that most wise Paul truly says that Christ
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: came to save sinners. Seest thou, how the only begden
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: word of God, having taken upon him, the flesh transferred
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: unto himself the devil's goods. From Sermon twenty one explanation
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: of what follows from the Syriac or So, how can
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: a man enter the house of the strong man and
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: spoil his vessels, unless first he hath bound the strong man?
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: And then he will spoil his vessels by the house
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: of the strong man. That is of Satan. He means
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: this country upon earth, and his vessels are those who
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: are like minded with him. For just as we call
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: the saints holy vessels, so there is nothing to prevent
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: our giving the name of vessels of the devil to
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: those who are the contrivers of all wickedness. The only
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: begotten word therefore of God, at his incarnation, entered into
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: the strong man's house even into this world, and having
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: bound him and sunk him in fetters of darkness, as
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: it is written, spoiled his goods, and Levi verily was saved.
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: While in us the deeds suggect to happy hopes. For
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: by the very fact we are taught that repentance will
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: save yea moreover, God himself, who is Lord of all,
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: shall be our suredy where he says, by the voice
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: of the Prophet, return unto me, and be ye saved,
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: even from the ends of the earth. From the same
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: sermon explanation of what follows from the Syriac as above.
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: Which of you that has a hundred sheep and has
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: lost one of them, will not leave the ninety nine
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: in the mountain and go and seek that which has
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: gone astray? And if he chanced to find it, verily,
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: I say unto you that he rejoices more in it
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: than in the ninety nine which went not astray. For
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: the multitude of rational created beings which form Christ's flocking
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: heaven and on earth is innumerable, and so great as
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: even to mount up unto a perfect number. For this
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: is what is signified to us by the term one hundred.
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: The companies. Then, of the holy angels are the ninety nine.
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: For as I said, they are many. But the flock
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: on earth is one, but yet useful to complete the number,
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: and sought for also by Christ. Did he then seek
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: it as that which was lost, or as that which
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: had not yet suffered this? But it is plain that
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: that which is lost is sought for in what manner? Then?
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: Had it been lost? By being brought down into sin,
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: by wandering from the divine will, and going far astray
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: from the universal Shepherd? But none of these things moved
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: the Pharisees. On the contrary, they find fault with them
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: to the disciples. For listen five thirty, and their scribes
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: and Pharisees murmured, saying, unto his disciples, there are, however,
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: some who endeavor to deprive those entangled in sin of
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: the divine gentleness. For they do not admit of repentance,
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: but as it were, rebuke the Savior for seeking his
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: own and gathering from every quarter that which was scattered.
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: And to these we say, the Pharisees set you the
- 1:42:37Speaker 1: example of murmuring. When they saw LEVI called and a
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: crowd of publicans gathered together and feasting with Christ, the
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: Savior of us all, and going up to the Holy apostles,
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: they vented their blame, saying, why do ye eat and
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: drink with the publicans? But they had for answer, they
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: that our whole need not a physician, for the Savior
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: of all, as being the physician of spirits, does not
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: withdraw from those in need of him, but as being
- 1:43:14Speaker 1: able to cleanse them, purposely conversed with those not as
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: yet purified of their sins. But let us see, o, Pharisee,
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: the overweening pride of thy disposition. Fort, let us take
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: Christ himself, to whom all things are known, as the
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: expounder of the great blame that thou broadest upon thyself
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: by thy overbearing treatment of sinners. Fort, speaking of a
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: pharisee who wanted himself when praying, and of a certain
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: publican who accused himself, he said, verily, I say unto
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: you that he went down justified to his house, rather
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: than that pharisee. The publican, therefore, who confessed his sin,
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: is justified rather than the haughty pharisee. But for what
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: reason do the pharisees blame the Savior for eating with sinners?
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: Because it was the law to put a distinction between
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: the holy and the profane, that is that whatever was
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: hallowed was not to be brought into contact with things profane.
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: They made the accusation therefore as vindicating the law forsooth,
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: But really it was envy against the Lord and readiness
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: to find fault. But he shows them that he is
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: present now not as a judge, but as a physician,
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: and performs the proper duty of the physician's office in
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: being in the company of those in need of healing.
- 1:44:48Speaker 1: But no sooner had they received an explanation of their
- 1:44:52Speaker 1: first accusation than they bring forward another finding fault, because
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: his disciples did not fast, wishing to obtain hereby an
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: opportunity against himself, but observe their perseverance and malice. For
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: no sooner have they received an explanation of their first
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: accusation than they change from one thing to another, in
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: the hope of finding an opportunity of convicting the holy
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: disciples and Jesus himself of disregard of the law. But
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: they are told in reply, now is the bride chamber,
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: the time of calling, the time of instruction. The children
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: are being nursed up. Those who are called are being
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: fed with milk. Fasting is not yet seasonable. For yes,
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: say they, you feast with publicans and sinners, although the
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: law commands that the pure should not hold intercourse with
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: the impure. And your pretext for transgressing the law is
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: your love for mankind. But why fast gee not according
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: to the custom of the just and those who wish
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: to live according to the law. But in answer to
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: such objections, one may say, do you understand it all yourself,
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: o ju, the proper method of fasting? For as the
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: prophet Isaiah says, on the days, if you are fast,
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: ye find your own wills and goad all who are
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: subject unto you. If ye fast for law suits and contentions,
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: and strike the lowly with fists, why fast ge for me?
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: This is not the fast I have chosen. Saith the Lord,
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: and dost thou, then, when thou thyself knowest not how
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: to fast, blame the Holy apostles for not fasting after
- 1:46:51Speaker 1: thy fashion, and to view it in another light. Those
- 1:46:57Speaker 1: who are made wise by the New Covenant in Christrist
- 1:47:00Speaker 1: fast rationally, that is, by humbling themselves in the eyes
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: of God and imposing upon themselves, as it were, a
- 1:47:09Speaker 1: voluntary sentence of labor and abstinence, that they may obtain
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: forgiveness of their offenses, or win some fresh spiritual gift,
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: or even to mortify the law of sin that is
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: in their fleshly members. But this modive fasting thou art
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: ignorant of Pharisee, for thou hast refused to receive the
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: heavenly bridegroom, who is the planter and teacher of every virtue.
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: Even Christ. Moreover, the saints indeed fast that they may
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: quell the passions of the body by exhausting it. But
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: Christ needed not to fast for the perfecting of virtue, because,
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: as being God, he was free from all passion. Nor
- 1:47:56Speaker 1: did his companions, because they received a his grace and
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: were maids strong and wrought virtue even without fasting. And
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: even though he fasted for the forty days, it was
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: not to mortify any passions in himself, but to set
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: an example for men in his own conduct of the
- 1:48:18Speaker 1: law of abstinence. With good reason. There For he defends
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: himself by the words which the evangelist goes on to
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: record five thirty four. But he said, unto them, can
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: ye make the sons of the bride chamber fast while
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: the bridegroom is with them. Observe I pray again the
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: manner in which Christ shows that they have no share
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: in the feast, but are altogether strangers to the joy
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: felt on his account and without part in the world's
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: great festival. For the revelation of our Savior to the
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: world was nothing else than a general festival at which
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: He spiritually united to himself the nature of man to
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: be as it were his bride, that she who had
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: been long barren, might be fruitful and blessed with a
- 1:49:16Speaker 1: numerous offspring. All therefore are the children of the bride chamber,
- 1:49:21Speaker 1: who are called by Him through the new message of
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: the Gospel, but not the scribes and pharisees, who attach
- 1:49:29Speaker 1: themselves solely to the shadow of the law. But as
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: He had once granted permission to the children of the
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: bride chamber not to afflict themselves, as a concession suitable
- 1:49:42Speaker 1: to the season, inasmuch as they were keeping a spiritual feast,
- 1:49:47Speaker 1: that fasting might not be entirely rejected by us. He
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: adds most suitably five thirty five. But the days will
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: come when also bridegroom shall be taken away from them,
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: then shall they fast in those days, for all things
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: are good in their season. But what is the meaning
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: of the bridegroom being taken away from them? It is
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: his being taken up into heaven five thirty six. And
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: he speak also a parable unto them, but that the
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: institutions of Christ cannot be received by those who live
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: according to the law, nor admitted into the hearts of
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: such as have not as yet received the renewing by
- 1:50:37Speaker 1: the Holy Ghost. The Lord shows by saying that a
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: tattered patch cannot be put upon a new garment, nor
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: can old skins hold new wine. For the First Covenant
- 1:50:50Speaker 1: has grown old, nor was it free from fault. Those
- 1:50:55Speaker 1: therefore who adhere to it and keep it hard the
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: antiquated commandment have no share in the new order of
- 1:51:03Speaker 1: things in Christ, for in Him all things are become new.
- 1:51:08Speaker 1: But their mind being decayed, they have no concord nor
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: point of mutual agreement with the ministers of the New Covenant.
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: The God of all accordingly somewhere said of them by
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: one of the holy prophets, that a new heart and
- 1:51:25Speaker 1: a new spirit will I put into them. And David
- 1:51:30Speaker 1: also sings, create in me a clean heart o God
- 1:51:35Speaker 1: and renew a right spirit within me. And we have
- 1:51:40Speaker 1: been commanded also to put off the old man and
- 1:51:44Speaker 1: to put on the new Man, renewed after the image
- 1:51:48Speaker 1: of Him that created it. And Paul also gives counsel, saying,
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: be ye not conformed to this world, but be ye
- 1:51:58Speaker 1: transformed by the renewing of your minds, that ye may
- 1:52:02Speaker 1: prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will
- 1:52:06Speaker 1: of God. Those therefore, who have not as yet received
- 1:52:12Speaker 1: the renewing of the spirit are also unable to prove
- 1:52:16Speaker 1: the good and acceptable and perfect will of God. End
- 1:52:23Speaker 1: of fragments from Sermon twenty one. Fragments from Sermons twenty
- 1:52:33Speaker 1: two through twenty five. Commentary on the Gospel of Luke
- 1:52:38Speaker 1: Sermons twelve through twenty five by Cyril of Alexandria, translated
- 1:52:43Speaker 1: by R. Pain Smith. This LibriVox recording is in the
- 1:52:47Speaker 1: public domain. From Sermon twenty two. Explanation of that which
- 1:52:53Speaker 1: is below from the Syriac as before, and no man
- 1:52:59Speaker 1: puts new wine into old skins. The heart of the
- 1:53:04Speaker 1: Jews then is an old skin, and therefore cannot hold
- 1:53:09Speaker 1: the new wine. For this is the saving commandment of
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: the Gospel, making glad the heart of man. But Christ
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: hath filled us with these great blessings, by bountifully endowing
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: us with spiritual gifts and opening the pathway wide into
- 1:53:26Speaker 1: all virtue. Six Two Why do ye that which is
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: not lawful to do on the Sabbaths? Yet a new covenant,
- 1:53:38Speaker 1: God promiseth us, now that the first hath waxed old
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: and is near to vanish away. According to the words
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: of the divine Paul Yea. He even says, by one
- 1:53:51Speaker 1: of the holy prophets, Behold the days come, saith the Lord,
- 1:53:57Speaker 1: when I will perfect with the House of Israel and
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: with the House of Judah a new covenant, Not according
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: to the covenant which I made with their fathers in
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: the day when I took hold of their hand to
- 1:54:11Speaker 1: bring them out of the land of Egypt. If therefore
- 1:54:16Speaker 1: the new Covenant is the second and different from the first,
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: there is every necessity for those who wish to live
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: according to it, to abandon the old laws and conform
- 1:54:28Speaker 1: to those which will guide them into the newness of
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: the Gospel polity. But of all this we can see
- 1:54:36Speaker 1: that the scribes and Pharisees comprehended nothing, for being altogether
- 1:54:41Speaker 1: destitute of knowledge of the sacred scriptures, they had but
- 1:54:46Speaker 1: one sole purpose, on every occasion, to find fault with
- 1:54:50Speaker 1: the divine and heavenly preaching. They lie in wait therefore,
- 1:54:55Speaker 1: for the Holy Apostles, in their constant attendance upon our
- 1:54:59Speaker 1: co Savior Christ, and tell him concerning them. Behold, we
- 1:55:05Speaker 1: see those who are under thy instruction acting contrary to
- 1:55:09Speaker 1: the precepts of the law. For they do what it
- 1:55:12Speaker 1: is not lawful to do on the sabbaths. For while
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: the law enjoins men to do no work on the
- 1:55:19Speaker 1: Sabbath and to meddle with no labor whatsoever, the disciples
- 1:55:24Speaker 1: are rubbing ears of corn with their hands. But tell me,
- 1:55:29Speaker 1: dost not thou thyself, when setting thy sabbath meal break
- 1:55:34Speaker 1: the bread? Why then dost thou blame others, but that
- 1:55:39Speaker 1: we may use against thee the bulwark of the Saviour's words.
- 1:55:43Speaker 1: Listen six three. And Jesus answered and said, unto them,
- 1:55:50Speaker 1: have ye not even read what David did. Now, even
- 1:55:55Speaker 1: though David thus acted contrary to what the law approves,
- 1:56:00Speaker 1: yet he is rightly and justly esteemed by us as
- 1:56:03Speaker 1: worthy of all admiration, for he was, in truth a
- 1:56:07Speaker 1: saint and prophet, Since therefore the law of Moses expressly
- 1:56:12Speaker 1: commands judge just judgment, and regard not the person in judgment.
- 1:56:19Speaker 1: How saith he condemn ye, my disciples, while ye still
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: admire as a saint and prophet the blessed David, although
- 1:56:28Speaker 1: he did not keep Moses's command. But by the loaves
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: of the showbread, there is clearly indicated to us the
- 1:56:37Speaker 1: bread that cometh down from Heaven to be set forth
- 1:56:41Speaker 1: upon the holy tables of the churches, and all the
- 1:56:45Speaker 1: furniture of the table used for the performance of its
- 1:56:49Speaker 1: mystical service was a plain type of the divine treasures.
- 1:56:54Speaker 1: But spiritually the bread signifies the twelve Apostles of whom
- 1:56:59Speaker 1: we we shall speak in due order when our discourse
- 1:57:03Speaker 1: reaches the disciples themselves. From Sermon twenty three explanation of
- 1:57:10Speaker 1: what follows from the Syriac as before, But God said
- 1:57:17Speaker 1: I require mercy and not sacrifice, and the acknowledgment of
- 1:57:22Speaker 1: God and not hull burnt offerings. What is meant by
- 1:57:28Speaker 1: mercy and what by sacrifice? By mercy, then is signified
- 1:57:34Speaker 1: justification and grace in Christ, even that which is by faith,
- 1:57:40Speaker 1: For we have been justified, not by the works of
- 1:57:44Speaker 1: the law that we have done, but by his great
- 1:57:47Speaker 1: mercy and sacrifice means the law of Moses six six.
- 1:57:54Speaker 1: And he was teaching, and there was a man there
- 1:57:58Speaker 1: whose right hand was with him. But his teaching was
- 1:58:02Speaker 1: ever of things too high for reason, and such as
- 1:58:06Speaker 1: made plain to his hearers. The pathway of salvation opened
- 1:58:10Speaker 1: through him. And immediately after his teaching he displayed his
- 1:58:15Speaker 1: godlike power, having first by words smoothed, as it were,
- 1:58:20Speaker 1: the road to believe, For the miracle sometimes converts unto
- 1:58:24Speaker 1: faith those who had disbelieved the word. But the pharisees
- 1:58:29Speaker 1: watched him to see if he would heal on the sabbath,
- 1:58:32Speaker 1: for such as the nature of an envious man, that
- 1:58:36Speaker 1: he makes the praises of others food for his own disease,
- 1:58:40Speaker 1: and wickedly is maddened by their reputation. And what once
- 1:58:45Speaker 1: more said he to this who knoweth all things, who
- 1:58:49Speaker 1: searcheth the hearts, and understandeth whatever is therein for with
- 1:58:55Speaker 1: him is the light, as the scripture declares, he spake
- 1:59:00Speaker 1: to him that had the withered hand stand forth into
- 1:59:04Speaker 1: the midst. And why did he do this? It might
- 1:59:09Speaker 1: perhaps be to move the cruel and unpitying Pharisee to
- 1:59:13Speaker 1: compassion the man's malady perhaps might shame them and persuade
- 1:59:18Speaker 1: them to allay the flames of envy. Six nine. I
- 1:59:25Speaker 1: will ask you something. Is it lawful on the Sabbath
- 1:59:28Speaker 1: days to do good or to do evil? Most wise,
- 1:59:33Speaker 1: in very deed, is this question and a statement most
- 1:59:37Speaker 1: suitable to meet their folly. For if it be lawful
- 1:59:41Speaker 1: to do good on the Sabbath, and nothing prevents the
- 1:59:45Speaker 1: sick being pitied by God, cease, thus picking up opportunities
- 1:59:50Speaker 1: for fault finding against Christ, and bringing down on thy
- 1:59:55Speaker 1: own head the sentence which the Father has decreed against
- 1:59:59Speaker 1: those who die dishonored the son. For thou hast heard
- 2:00:03Speaker 1: him where he says of him by the voice of David,
- 2:00:07Speaker 1: And I will cut off his enemies from before his face,
- 2:00:11Speaker 1: and put to flight those that hate him. But if
- 2:00:15Speaker 1: it be not lawful to do good on the Sabbath,
- 2:00:19Speaker 1: and the law forbids the saving of life, thou hast
- 2:00:23Speaker 1: made thyself an accuser of the law. Thou hast landered
- 2:00:27Speaker 1: the commandment for which the ministry of Moses is regarded
- 2:00:32Speaker 1: with admiration. No, he replies the God of all, did
- 2:00:37Speaker 1: not enact the law of the Sabbath for himself, but
- 2:00:41Speaker 1: for us, rather, whose neck is bowed to it. Thou sayest, well,
- 2:00:47Speaker 1: I assent to thy words. Therefore, that which is divine
- 2:00:51Speaker 1: is free from the compulsion of the law. Why then,
- 2:00:55Speaker 1: dost thou blame Christ for wishing also to show mercy
- 2:00:59Speaker 1: on the Sabbath and benefit a living soul. And were
- 2:01:03Speaker 1: it our wish to examine closely the law enacted for
- 2:01:07Speaker 1: the Sabbath, we should find it ordained by God for
- 2:01:10Speaker 1: purposes of mercy. For he commanded to do no work
- 2:01:15Speaker 1: on the Sabbath, and entirely to abstain from labor, and
- 2:01:20Speaker 1: even to give rest at the same time to the
- 2:01:22Speaker 1: irrational animals. For he said that its purpose was that
- 2:01:28Speaker 1: thy manservant may rest, and thy maid servant, thy ox,
- 2:01:33Speaker 1: and thy beast of burden, and all thy cattle. But
- 2:01:37Speaker 1: he who has mercy on the ox and other animals,
- 2:01:41Speaker 1: how would not he pity on the Sabbath day a
- 2:01:44Speaker 1: man who was attacked by a severe and irremediable malady
- 2:01:51Speaker 1: six eleven, and they were filled with madness? Is not
- 2:01:57Speaker 1: the miracle enough to produce faith? Thou seest him, working
- 2:02:01Speaker 1: with godlike dignity and with supreme power, healing the sick
- 2:02:06Speaker 1: and travailst Thou with murder, bread of envy and malice.
- 2:02:13Speaker 1: Six twelve. He went out into the mountain to pray.
- 2:02:19Speaker 1: All that Christ did was for our edification and for
- 2:02:23Speaker 1: the benefit of those who believe in Him. And by
- 2:02:26Speaker 1: proposing to us his own conduct as a sort of
- 2:02:30Speaker 1: pattern of the spiritual mode of life, he would make
- 2:02:34Speaker 1: us true worshipers. Let us see, therefore, in the pattern
- 2:02:38Speaker 1: and example provided for us by Christ acts the manner
- 2:02:43Speaker 1: in which we ought to make our supplications unto God.
- 2:02:47Speaker 1: We must pray secretly and in concealment, and with no
- 2:02:51Speaker 1: one seeing us. For this is the signification of Jesus
- 2:02:56Speaker 1: going into the mountain alone and praying, as it were, leisurely.
- 2:03:02Speaker 1: And this he has himself taught us, saying, but thou,
- 2:03:06Speaker 1: when thou prayest, enter into thy closet. For we ought
- 2:03:10Speaker 1: to pray, not seeking after glory, but lifting up holy hands,
- 2:03:16Speaker 1: while the soul, as it were, mounts aloft the contemplation
- 2:03:20Speaker 1: of God, withdrawing from all tumult and quitting worldly anxiety.
- 2:03:26Speaker 1: And this we must do not with fickleness, nor with
- 2:03:30Speaker 1: a listless feebleness, but on the contrary, with earnestness and
- 2:03:35Speaker 1: zeal and a patience worthy of admiration. For thou hast
- 2:03:40Speaker 1: heard that Jesus did not merely pray, but that he
- 2:03:44Speaker 1: also passed the night in this duty. But possibly the
- 2:03:49Speaker 1: enemy of the truth will not endure us when thus speaking,
- 2:03:54Speaker 1: for he says he prays and requests from the Father
- 2:03:58Speaker 1: what he hath not. Well, then do ye still say
- 2:04:01Speaker 1: that he is both consubstantial and equal to him in
- 2:04:05Speaker 1: all things, and in no way whatsoever unlike him. For
- 2:04:10Speaker 1: without all controversy, the less is blessed of the greater,
- 2:04:14Speaker 1: and decidedly he who gives is greater than he who
- 2:04:17Speaker 1: makes request to receive something. Let then, those who pervert
- 2:04:22Speaker 1: the right faith teach us first of all of what
- 2:04:25Speaker 1: they imagine the Son to be in need, and what
- 2:04:29Speaker 1: did he seek to obtain, as not as yet possessing it.
- 2:04:34Speaker 1: He is the true light. He is in his own nature,
- 2:04:39Speaker 1: life and the cause of life. He is the lord
- 2:04:43Speaker 1: also of powers. He is wisdom and righteousness, the creator
- 2:04:49Speaker 1: and framer of the universe, superior to everything that has
- 2:04:53Speaker 1: been brought into being, is the King of the universe,
- 2:04:58Speaker 1: the dispenser of and earth, the giver with God, the
- 2:05:03Speaker 1: father of every blessing. And this thou wilt learn by
- 2:05:08Speaker 1: what the blessed Paul has somewhere written, Grace be to
- 2:05:12Speaker 1: you and peace from God, our Father and our Lord
- 2:05:16Speaker 1: Jesus Christ. He is conspicuous on the throne far above,
- 2:05:22Speaker 1: and is glorified by the whole rational creation. Accordingly, he
- 2:05:27Speaker 1: is by substance the heir of all the divine dignities
- 2:05:31Speaker 1: of God the Father. And therefore speak he unto them
- 2:05:36Speaker 1: that all that is mine is thine, and thine mine,
- 2:05:41Speaker 1: and I am glorified in them. But he who has
- 2:05:45Speaker 1: everything that belongs to God, the Father as his very own,
- 2:05:50Speaker 1: of what is he still in need? But if in
- 2:05:54Speaker 1: fine he is in need of anything, And they affirm
- 2:05:57Speaker 1: that this is true, there is no not to prevent
- 2:06:01Speaker 1: our saying that there are certain things of which the
- 2:06:04Speaker 1: Father himself is in need. For if all that the
- 2:06:08Speaker 1: son has is the father's, but there is something of
- 2:06:11Speaker 1: which the son is in need, therefore must the father
- 2:06:15Speaker 1: too be similarly circumstanced. For all that the son hath
- 2:06:20Speaker 1: is the father's. But the Father is all perfect and
- 2:06:25Speaker 1: is deficient of no good whatsoever that is suitable to deity.
- 2:06:31Speaker 1: Therefore is the Son all perfect, as having all that
- 2:06:34Speaker 1: the Father hath, and being his image and the impress
- 2:06:39Speaker 1: of his substance. But in the Impress there is displayed
- 2:06:43Speaker 1: entirely the original form, and in the original form there
- 2:06:48Speaker 1: exists entirely the Impress. And thus much then as respects them.
- 2:06:55Speaker 1: And those two who have been caught by the empty
- 2:06:58Speaker 1: declamations of Nestoria, say that it is entirely unbefitting the Son,
- 2:07:04Speaker 1: considered as God by nature, to pray, and rather belongs
- 2:07:09Speaker 1: to the man coupled with him by way of connection
- 2:07:13Speaker 1: to him, that is, of the seed of David. He
- 2:07:17Speaker 1: it was therefore who offered up the prayer. What reply,
- 2:07:21Speaker 1: then shall we make to this, that ye are utterly
- 2:07:25Speaker 1: ignorant of the mystery of the incarnation of the only Begotten.
- 2:07:30Speaker 1: Remember the blessed evangelist John, who says, and the Word
- 2:07:35Speaker 1: was made flesh. And of this the all wise Paul
- 2:07:39Speaker 1: is given us a plain proof by saying concerning him,
- 2:07:44Speaker 1: for he taketh not hold at all of the angels,
- 2:07:48Speaker 1: but taketh hold of the seed of Abraham. Whence it
- 2:07:51Speaker 1: became him to be made like unto his brethren in
- 2:07:55Speaker 1: all things, that he might become a merciful and faithful
- 2:07:59Speaker 1: high priest in things pertaining unto God, to make propitiation
- 2:08:04Speaker 1: for the sins of the people. On what account, therefore
- 2:08:09Speaker 1: does Nestorius eject from the measure of human nature, him who,
- 2:08:14Speaker 1: though divinely begotten as the word by God the Father,
- 2:08:18Speaker 1: yet humbled himself unto emptying even to becoming our brother,
- 2:08:24Speaker 1: by being made like unto us, and similar in all
- 2:08:27Speaker 1: things to the inhabitants of the earth, sin only accepted
- 2:08:32Speaker 1: for having become like unto us. From his exceeding gentleness
- 2:08:37Speaker 1: and love to mankind. He disdains not human things, but
- 2:08:42Speaker 1: sets before us his conduct as a type of goodness,
- 2:08:46Speaker 1: unto the end, that, as I said, we may be
- 2:08:50Speaker 1: earnest in following his footsteps. Six thirteen And when it
- 2:08:58Speaker 1: was day he called his disciples, and of them, having
- 2:09:02Speaker 1: chosen twelve, our Lord Jesus Christ, having spent the night
- 2:09:07Speaker 1: in prayer, and having conversed with his Father and God
- 2:09:11Speaker 1: in heaven in a way ineffable and beyond our powers
- 2:09:15Speaker 1: of understanding, and such as is known solely to himself,
- 2:09:21Speaker 1: even therein making himself an example unto us of that
- 2:09:25Speaker 1: which is necessary for salvation. For he taught us in
- 2:09:29Speaker 1: what way we two might rightly and blamelessly offer our prayers,
- 2:09:35Speaker 1: comes down from the mountain and appoints those who were
- 2:09:39Speaker 1: to be the world's teachers. According to the words he spake,
- 2:09:44Speaker 1: ye are the light of the world. And of this
- 2:09:48Speaker 1: appointment of the Holy Apostles, the blessed David also makes mention,
- 2:09:53Speaker 1: addressing himself, as it were to Christ, Thou shalt make
- 2:09:57Speaker 1: them rulers over all the earth. They shall make mention
- 2:10:01Speaker 1: of thy name in every successive generation. For verily, while
- 2:10:08Speaker 1: they were in the body, they made mention of the
- 2:10:10Speaker 1: glory of Christ, telling his mystery, both in cities and villages.
- 2:10:16Speaker 1: And now that they have been called to the mansions
- 2:10:19Speaker 1: that are above none the less do they still even
- 2:10:22Speaker 1: thus converse with us about Him. By the most wise
- 2:10:26Speaker 1: history which they have written concerning Him. And those indeed
- 2:10:31Speaker 1: who were appointed priests according to the law of Moses.
- 2:10:35Speaker 1: Even Aaron and his company were made beautiful to the
- 2:10:38Speaker 1: senses by vestments suitable to their priestly dignity. But the
- 2:10:44Speaker 1: divine disciples, being adorned with spiritual gifts, had entrusted to
- 2:10:50Speaker 1: them the ministry of the Gospel oracles, for it was said,
- 2:10:54Speaker 1: unto them heal the sick, cast out demons, clean's lepers,
- 2:11:00Speaker 1: raise the dead, and being thus invested with Christ's power,
- 2:11:05Speaker 1: they have filled the whole world with astonishment. But mark
- 2:11:10Speaker 1: the extreme moderation of the evangelist, for he does not
- 2:11:14Speaker 1: simply say that the Holy Apostles were appointed, but rather,
- 2:11:18Speaker 1: by introducing the record of these chief ones, each by name,
- 2:11:23Speaker 1: takes care that no one should venture to enroll himself
- 2:11:26Speaker 1: in the company of those that were chosen. For if
- 2:11:30Speaker 1: Paul saith, no man taketh this honor upon himself, but
- 2:11:35Speaker 1: he that is called by God. And though the Holy
- 2:11:39Speaker 1: Apostles were called by name to this great and splendid dignity,
- 2:11:43Speaker 1: yet from time to time some men have gone to
- 2:11:47Speaker 1: such a pitch of madness and audacity as even to
- 2:11:50Speaker 1: name themselves apostles of Christ, and to usurp an honor
- 2:11:55Speaker 1: not granted unto them of these the Divine Disciples have
- 2:11:59Speaker 1: made men. For they say such are false apostles, deceitful workers,
- 2:12:06Speaker 1: transforming themselves into angels of righteousness. And no wonder, for
- 2:12:12Speaker 1: Satan even transforms himself into an angel of light. It
- 2:12:17Speaker 1: is no great thing. Therefore, if his ministers also transformed
- 2:12:22Speaker 1: themselves into angels of righteousness. But we neither acknowledge nor
- 2:12:28Speaker 1: will receive any one except those only so named in
- 2:12:32Speaker 1: the evangelic writings, and him who was appointed after them,
- 2:12:37Speaker 1: the most wise Paul, to whom also the Savior himself
- 2:12:41Speaker 1: bore witness, saying that he is a vessel of election
- 2:12:45Speaker 1: for me to carry my name before all the heathen.
- 2:12:50Speaker 1: The Law indeed pointed them out before in type, and
- 2:12:54Speaker 1: the prophets also proclaimed them as For instance, it is
- 2:12:59Speaker 1: written in the Mostesa Record, and ye shall take fine
- 2:13:03Speaker 1: flower and make it into twelve loaves, and ye shall
- 2:13:07Speaker 1: put them in two rows upon the pure table before
- 2:13:10Speaker 1: the Lord. And ye shall put upon the roe frankensense
- 2:13:15Speaker 1: and salt. And they shall be for loaves set before
- 2:13:19Speaker 1: the Lord for immemorial, for the bread that came down
- 2:13:24Speaker 1: from heaven and giveth life to the world. Who else
- 2:13:28Speaker 1: can it be but Christ, the Savior of the universe,
- 2:13:32Speaker 1: And in imitation two of him, the blessed Disciples also
- 2:13:37Speaker 1: are named loaves, for having been made partakers of Him
- 2:13:41Speaker 1: who nourishes us unto life. Eternal. They also nourish by
- 2:13:45Speaker 1: their own writings those who hunger and thirst after righteousness.
- 2:13:50Speaker 1: And as the Savior, who is the true light, called
- 2:13:53Speaker 1: the disciples also light, for ye are the light of
- 2:13:57Speaker 1: the world. So also, being himself the bread of life,
- 2:14:02Speaker 1: he has bestowed upon his disciples to be ranked as
- 2:14:06Speaker 1: loves and observe. I pray the marvelous art of the law,
- 2:14:13Speaker 1: for ye shall put it, says upon the loves frankincense
- 2:14:17Speaker 1: and salt. Now the frankncense is the symbol of a
- 2:14:21Speaker 1: sweet odor, and the salt that of understanding and good sense,
- 2:14:27Speaker 1: both of which existed in the highest degree in the
- 2:14:30Speaker 1: Holy Apostles. For their life was one of a sweet savor,
- 2:14:35Speaker 1: as they also said that we are a sweet savor
- 2:14:39Speaker 1: of Christ unto God. And they were moreover also full
- 2:14:44Speaker 1: of understanding, so that I hear the prophet David even
- 2:14:48Speaker 1: singing of them. In the Psalms. There is Benjamin in entrancement.
- 2:14:53Speaker 1: The princes of Judah are their leaders, the princes of
- 2:14:57Speaker 1: zebulon the princes of Nephthalim. For the Blessed Disciples were
- 2:15:02Speaker 1: chosen out of almost every tribe of Israel, and were
- 2:15:06Speaker 1: the bearers of light to the world, holding up the
- 2:15:09Speaker 1: word of life and the wonder. Indeed, is this that
- 2:15:14Speaker 1: the stages of the Greeks possess a splendid copiousness of
- 2:15:18Speaker 1: speech and an admirable beauty of language. But the disciples
- 2:15:24Speaker 1: of our Savior were mere artificers and boatmen and fishers,
- 2:15:30Speaker 1: having no boast of words, no fluency of picked phrases
- 2:15:35Speaker 1: and an expression. Indeed, were simple men, but rich in knowledge.
- 2:15:41Speaker 1: Yet is the literature of the Greeks, with its sonorous phrases, silent,
- 2:15:47Speaker 1: while the power of the evangelic preaching has possession of
- 2:15:50Speaker 1: the world. God also makes mention of them by the
- 2:15:54Speaker 1: voice of Jeremiah, saying of the enemy of all, even Satan,
- 2:16:00Speaker 1: Woe to him who multiplieth for himself that which is
- 2:16:04Speaker 1: not his, and maketh his collar thick and heavy. For
- 2:16:09Speaker 1: suddenly shall they arise that shall bite him, and thy
- 2:16:13Speaker 1: adversaries shall wake up, and thou shalt be their prey.
- 2:16:18Speaker 1: For Satan had gathered unto him all the inhabitants of
- 2:16:21Speaker 1: the earth, though they were not his, and had caused
- 2:16:25Speaker 1: them to be his worshipers, making his collar heavy. But
- 2:16:30Speaker 1: those who were to plunder his goods woke up for
- 2:16:33Speaker 1: the net of the apostolic teaching, cut all those that
- 2:16:36Speaker 1: were in error, and brought back unto God the whole world.
- 2:16:42Speaker 1: From Sermon twenty five explanation of the saying of the
- 2:16:47Speaker 1: apostle that follows, be ye like unto me, as I
- 2:16:52Speaker 1: also am unto Christ? And how was the wise Paul
- 2:16:57Speaker 1: like unto Christ? Did he established the heavens as did
- 2:17:02Speaker 1: the word of God? Did he set the earth upon
- 2:17:05Speaker 1: its firm foundation, and bring forth the sun and moon,
- 2:17:09Speaker 1: and the stars and light? How therefore was he like him?
- 2:17:15Speaker 1: By being an imitator of that human virtue which Christ
- 2:17:19Speaker 1: showed forth for our example six seventeen, He stood upon
- 2:17:26Speaker 1: level ground and a crowd of his disciples, and a
- 2:17:29Speaker 1: great multitude of the people. But observe I pray the
- 2:17:35Speaker 1: manner of the election for the most wise evangelist says
- 2:17:39Speaker 1: that it was not done in a corner and secretly,
- 2:17:43Speaker 1: but rather when many disciples were gathered together, and a
- 2:17:47Speaker 1: vast crowd from all the country of the Jews, and
- 2:17:50Speaker 1: from the sea, coast of Tire and sidon. These latter
- 2:17:54Speaker 1: were idolaters, lame in the hollow of both needs. In
- 2:17:59Speaker 1: part of deserving the customs of the Jews, but yet
- 2:18:02Speaker 1: not altogether abandoning their idolatrous practices. The election therefore was
- 2:18:09Speaker 1: held in the presence of all these spectators and teachers
- 2:18:12Speaker 1: appointed for all beneath the heaven, And this duty they
- 2:18:16Speaker 1: also fulfilled, summoning the Jews from their legal worship, and
- 2:18:21Speaker 1: those who served demons from Grecian error to the acknowledgment
- 2:18:26Speaker 1: of the truth. And when He had appointed the holy Apostles,
- 2:18:31Speaker 1: he performed very many wonderful miracles, rebuking demons, delivering from
- 2:18:37Speaker 1: incurable diseases who soever drew near unto him, and displaying
- 2:18:43Speaker 1: his own most godlike power, that both the Jews, who
- 2:18:48Speaker 1: had run together unto him, and those from the country
- 2:18:51Speaker 1: of the Greeks might know that Christ, by whom they
- 2:18:56Speaker 1: were honored with the dignity of the apostolate, was not
- 2:19:00Speaker 1: some ordinary man of those in our degree, but on
- 2:19:04Speaker 1: the contrary, God, as being the Word that was made man,
- 2:19:09Speaker 1: but retained nevertheless his own glory, for power went forth
- 2:19:15Speaker 1: from him and healed all. For Christ did not borrow
- 2:19:20Speaker 1: strength from some other person, but being himself God by nature,
- 2:19:25Speaker 1: even though he had to become flesh, he healed them
- 2:19:29Speaker 1: all by the putting forth of power over the sick.
- 2:19:34Speaker 1: If further you wish to learn the interpretation of the
- 2:19:37Speaker 1: apostle's names, know that Peter is explained as meaning loosing
- 2:19:42Speaker 1: or knowing, Andrew as comely strength or answering. James as
- 2:19:49Speaker 1: one who takes labor by the heel, John, the grace
- 2:19:54Speaker 1: of the Lord, Matthew given Philip the opening of the
- 2:20:00Speaker 1: hands or the mouth of a lamp. Bartholomew, the sun
- 2:20:06Speaker 1: suspending water, Thomas an abyss or a twin James, the
- 2:20:13Speaker 1: son of Alpheus, the supplanting of the Passage of life,
- 2:20:18Speaker 1: Judas thanksgiving, and Simon obedience. End of fragments from Sermon
- 2:20:28Speaker 1: twenty five. End of commentary in the Gospel of Luke
