- 0:31And welcome to Anime Club. This week we're very, very, I'm
- 0:38afraid to say, obviously, I'm Phoebe, this is Chris.
- 0:40But more importantly, this week we have an absolute delight of a
- 0:45guest. Thank you, calling all the way
- 0:49from India. We, we're on international time
- 0:51now, folks. Anime Club has gone global, yes.
- 0:55It's 840 PMISTI am Arjun the artful, known as the Artful
- 1:01daughter on Instagram. You may have seen my movie
- 1:04reviews on Nerdy up North and I'm a huge nerd Quinterty.
- 1:10I'm a lawyer by profession and I love anime so and I'm really
- 1:14honoured to be a part of the show.
- 1:16Thank you guys for inviting me. Absolute pleasure, and thank you
- 1:19so much for giving up your evening to come and talk to us.
- 1:22And we were really excited because you recommended an anime
- 1:25that Chris and I hadn't heard of before, and that was really good
- 1:29fun to watch. So it's been an absolute
- 1:32pleasure not just having you here, but also watching your
- 1:35recommendation for this week, which is Detective Conan.
- 1:43So like you were telling us a bit about like how like how you
- 1:47discovered this anime before. Do you want to like?
- 1:49Yeah. So, yeah.
- 1:51Well, growing up I had access to this local channel on TV because
- 1:56called Hungama TV, it's in Hindi, It's a local channel.
- 1:59And it had these anime dubbed in Hindi, like these Japanese anime
- 2:04obviously in dubbed in Hindi. And we had a bunch of them
- 2:08growing up because like Tin Chan Kochikami and then of course
- 2:12Detective Conan and Detective Conan was called Detective Conan
- 2:16and not case close. Case close is the American one.
- 2:19And case close I started watching that way back in 2007
- 2:23ish and it was pretty interesting.
- 2:25Like it's I had never seen a detective kind of show when
- 2:29growing up. And I had just read the books
- 2:32and it had been about either Sherlock Holmes or Indian
- 2:35detectives for that matter. And Detective Conan was, you
- 2:39know, I felt it was a combination of both and it was
- 2:42pretty great. Like how it works out, like how
- 2:45and it's a spoiler alert and how an adult gets reverted into a
- 2:51kid and how he goes about using gadgets and solving crimes right
- 2:55from the scratch and explanations and everything.
- 2:59And how he maintains relations with the the other characters
- 3:03and how it fits into the entire thing, you know, and he's still
- 3:07in the stage of being a kid and like at times another's father
- 3:11that he, you know, accidentally goes back into an adult, but
- 3:15only for like, let's say an episode or something and he's
- 3:19back into a kid again. And this is like One Piece
- 3:22level. I mean, it goes on and on and
- 3:24on. And, and what the good fact is
- 3:27like we get to see new crimes, new mysteries every, you know,
- 3:32new episode or every couple of episodes.
- 3:34And at Max they stretch out to like a mega episode of let's say
- 3:404 episodes combined. And sometimes there have been
- 3:42movies and there have been a lot of movies and, but it's pretty
- 3:46great. The ride has been pretty great.
- 3:49Yeah. And I think the writing in, in
- 3:50this is really good. And it's funny you mentioned
- 3:53Sherlock Holmes and like a like a kind of Poirot.
- 3:56I was talking to a friend and they were like, what's, what
- 3:59would you say it's like? And I was like, it feels very
- 4:01Agatha Christie to me in that kind of, it's got like these
- 4:05like really clever crimes that and like a very charismatic sort
- 4:10of central detective character. But with also like a bit of Enid
- 4:15Blyton who like, I don't know if you've read any Enid Blyton like
- 4:18with like the Fab 5, it's got that kind of like kid kids
- 4:22adventure to it as well. The kids that stops it getting
- 4:26too sad. Yeah, the far away 3 Series the
- 4:31also. Living naughtiest girl at
- 4:32school, which was always my favorite.
- 4:37Chris is just rolling his eyes. I think he's he's about to say
- 4:39no, You're right. I think he was about to like,
- 4:42accuse me of being ridiculous and posh again.
- 4:45I watched Pokémon and read read Haines manuals when I was a kid.
- 4:50So fun fact, I wasn't exposed to manga as a kid too much except
- 4:55for, you know, when they it popped up in some, you know,
- 5:01bookstore or something. But I've always been an anime
- 5:05person. Then after in the anime, I
- 5:08always moved back to manga to like, you know, see the
- 5:11differences and like how you know, they've drawn the
- 5:14differences from the manga, the creative differences that have
- 5:17gone into, you know, actually putting it on the screen from,
- 5:21you know, black and white. And there have been notable
- 5:24differences in various issues, like not, not just Detective
- 5:28Conan, like it, let's say Dragon Ball Z or let's say Pokémon.
- 5:31Or for that matter, Naruto. Yeah.
- 5:35Yeah, yeah. But whenever I look up an anime,
- 5:38there's always that camp of people being like, well, the
- 5:41anime is good, but it's got nothing on the manga.
- 5:43It's got this all the time, even like.
- 5:46They've got in the rings. Stuff like that.
- 5:49They're like, Oh well, it's a great film, but the missed out
- 5:51Scar the the Shire, so it's not that good kind of thing.
- 5:55Oh yeah, one party obviously is like, you know, the the books
- 5:59are better than the movies. Yeah.
- 6:01And I, I always think it's unfair to both genres because I
- 6:05think they're two very different ways of telling a story, right?
- 6:09Like the written word versus visual media you have.
- 6:13I mean, like, I think to do a good adaptation, you have to do
- 6:17it differently to the book because you don't get things
- 6:19like internal monologue and you don't get things like like like
- 6:24lengthy character exposition, because that would be very
- 6:27boring if you saw that on screen.
- 6:30It would just be. People.
- 6:31Staring self reflectively, and that, that's not exciting.
- 6:35A story to watch. Yeah, I agree 100%.
- 6:39Like especially with something like Harry Potter for that
- 6:42matter. I mean books are somewhat so
- 6:45very different from what's in portrayed in the films.
- 6:48And like that's why now they're getting to you know make an
- 6:51entirety series out of it. And I hope they straight to true
- 6:55to the books for that matter. But nonetheless, we are here to
- 6:59discuss Detective Conan, so. Yeah, indeed.
- 7:03So how would you describe this show to someone who'd never seen
- 7:06it before? A masterpiece.
- 7:09Nice. What was it about though?
- 7:16Give us like a a broad summary, a broad summary.
- 7:21It's about, you know, high school did a high school guy
- 7:27who's been very whose dad was a famous mystery novelist and
- 7:33that, you know, inspired him to become a detective and and he
- 7:37was helping the police. He was that famous all across
- 7:40Japan. And then due to the spoiler
- 7:44alert, you know, activities of a criminal gang, he was reverted
- 7:48to a child instead of being killed.
- 7:51And now he's got, you know, the opportunity to stay close to his
- 7:55girlfriend and unfortunately her dad.
- 7:58And you know what? He's and soft crying like he his
- 8:03he makes for that solve the crimes, you know, knocks him out
- 8:07with you know, and tranquilize a gun and then uses a voice
- 8:10modifier to, you know, speak out and explain how the crime was
- 8:14done. That lets him get the, you know,
- 8:16get the credit for that. But at the end of the day, he
- 8:20takes pleasure in doing his own job.
- 8:22He in solving the crime, But unfortunately he has he has to
- 8:27go back to grade school again. Yeah.
- 8:31Yeah, yeah, has has the brain of like a brilliant detective is
- 8:35stuck in. Oh yes, colouring.
- 8:38It's like a, you know, it's like a combination of Sherlock Holmes
- 8:42and Alkil Poirot. And it's pretty.
- 8:46It's pretty good. Yeah, yeah.
- 8:49That's an excellent description. Yeah, Chris, because you'd never
- 8:54seen this before, what was your first impression?
- 8:58I thought, I thought it was good.
- 9:00I didn't even mind when before returned the detective corn and
- 9:04the what's he called Shinichi Kudo.
- 9:07Kudo yes. Yeah, I didn't even mind him as
- 9:10a normal teenager because he wasn't bad as it.
- 9:14I thought it was weird how the police relied on a teenager to
- 9:17do their job like but. I mean he was snarky as homes
- 9:21would go, but then not. Not as cynical though, but yeah.
- 9:27Yeah, I really like even the first episode when it kind of
- 9:31introduced all the characters as well.
- 9:33It was like the art style. It is an old art style, but it's
- 9:39not as bad as say when we did Escafrone, which I know as of
- 9:44recording was yesterday, but. Right.
- 9:48I mean it. Gives you the vibe of being in
- 9:50the nineties, 80s or 90s was still random into modern day,
- 9:53yeah. Yeah, it's hard to kiss.
- 9:57Sorry the mango was released in 1994 and that anime in 96 and it
- 10:02doesn't feel that. I mean there's a thousand 1150
- 10:06episodes at the minute of that anime and I had a glimpse
- 10:10because when I was watching it on Crunchyroll there was the 1st
- 10:132 episodes and then it skips to like 1000 DoD and the animation
- 10:18difference in there is staggering and I think it still
- 10:22ends up as a weekly as a weekly show.
- 10:26Weekly shown in Jump, I think I would say like that's how they
- 10:30call it in Japan. Like it's a shown in Jump kind
- 10:34of an anime. And yeah, it's a weekly thing.
- 10:37So as and when the manga releases, I think after a while
- 10:41the they adapted into anime and yeah and the episodes just keep
- 10:47on going. So like in Netflix, I so like
- 10:50how you watch it on Crunchyroll. I was watching it on Netflix
- 10:53because I recently got a connection of my own and yeah,
- 10:56nice. That's pretty great.
- 11:00It's pure nostalgia. It is, it does feel very, it
- 11:05does feel very nostalgic, but in a way that isn't isn't, it
- 11:09doesn't feel dated necessarily I don't think, especially in terms
- 11:12of of the type of story it's doing.
- 11:14What I really loved as well with the first 3 episodes is that
- 11:17each episode was very different and each crime that he's solving
- 11:21is very different. So you don't feel like it's
- 11:24actually a repetition of the same thing over and over again.
- 11:28Right. And I'm pretty amazed like how
- 11:31the writers, like they keep every case so very different,
- 11:35like not alike at all. I mean, that's the ingenuity.
- 11:39I've got to give it to the writers.
- 11:40I mean, how do you come up with new mysteries every week?
- 11:45The most look at the newspaper, I'll be like, right, I can do
- 11:47something with this. Oh yeah.
- 11:50Reality, instruments and then fiction.
- 11:52Yeah, yeah, that's very true. Did you have did you have like a
- 11:57favorite character in this? Because because I immediately I
- 12:01was like, there are a lot of characters here who I can, who I
- 12:04find very. I think and endearing.
- 12:06I think in the long run, I would like to bet on Kogaro, like,
- 12:12because like, he is the blundering person and the
- 12:14person, he stumbles upon everything at chance.
- 12:16I mean, we know that Conan is the, you know, brightest mind in
- 12:20the room, but it's cool like how he figures his way out of
- 12:25everything, like even though he's knocked out, how he comes
- 12:28into senses and takes credit for everything.
- 12:30So like, he's a character to watch out for.
- 12:32Like he's the, you know, underdog.
- 12:35Yeah, yeah. And Professor Agassa.
- 12:38Yeah, that so Professor Regressor was my favorite for
- 12:43sure. But I also I actually really
- 12:46like, and it's it's unusual for me to just really, really like
- 12:50the main character, but in this I really like Detective Conan.
- 12:53I don't find him like smug. He's kind of suck, like a bit
- 12:57sarcastic, but he's not like sometimes I think Sherlock
- 13:01Holmes and Poirot, because they're so smart, they can
- 13:05almost get a bit mean towards other people.
- 13:08Whereas with Detective Conan, you feel like he's actually
- 13:10trying to bring everyone to his conclusion rather than rub it in
- 13:14their faces. Like I'd I quite liked that take
- 13:17on a very clever, like a very clever man child.
- 13:21I don't think he has a choice for them being a kid because no
- 13:24one listens to him. Because it's just like, I found
- 13:27it surprising where there's this crime scene where there's
- 13:29obviously a fresh dead body and they're like, oh, there's a
- 13:32bunch of kids here. Well, we'll just leave them in
- 13:34the corner. That's fine.
- 13:36And how like especially in the first 3 episodes like how he
- 13:39gets beaten up on by Cougar or like what the hell are you doing
- 13:43over here? I mean, like, you're not.
- 13:45You're not supposed to be here in the first instance, but in.
- 13:48The 90s safeguard children's safeguarding was a different
- 13:52thing in. There as and how, you know,
- 13:58episodes go on, like he starts becoming kind of strict with
- 14:02Conan like how he is in the initial seasons.
- 14:05I've watched something season 8 so far.
- 14:07And yeah, due to the pandemic and after going into Masters, I
- 14:11think I didn't get the opportunity to watch more.
- 14:15I will now because I have the Netflix connection and I have a
- 14:19little bit more free time. Just a little.
- 14:22Not loads, but just enough for. A little bit of.
- 14:25Anime. But, and that's another thing
- 14:27that I love about 90s anime we've been doing.
- 14:29Actually, Chris and I have been on a bit of a 90s anime kick at
- 14:32the time of we're recording this and the episodes are about like
- 14:3820 minutes. Max 20 minutes exactly.
- 14:41And actually, it makes it really watchable.
- 14:45So you've been exposed to anime like, you know, Inuyasha, you
- 14:49know, Vampire Hunter D and and those ones, I guess.
- 14:54Yeah, Captain Sobasa, Probably a little bit of a hungry heart,
- 15:00those kind of ones. Yeah.
- 15:03Yeah, yeah, that's what we're going back because I don't it's
- 15:06weirdly worked out at the minute where we're just like
- 15:09remembering anime from when we first watched our watching it
- 15:13and it was like, Oh yeah, I remember having a a weird Google
- 15:16search and coming up with this anime here.
- 15:18Let's do an episode. So we have this channel.
- 15:20We have this channel called, yeah.
- 15:22We have this channel called Animex back in 2003 or 4.
- 15:27And that's where I was exposed to these kind of anime.
- 15:30I'm like, what are these? And they were laughing in
- 15:33English, Yeah. Yeah, for for us it was Cartoon
- 15:36Network and they had something. Tsunami.
- 15:39So after a certain after a certain time of day it would
- 15:43switch from being Cartoon Network.
- 15:45Where you'd have. Like Ed, Ed and Eddie, Courage
- 15:46the cowardly dog and then it. Would switch into the.
- 15:49Anime hour and you'd get Toonami would would come on and I and
- 15:55that's where I got a lot of my early anime from.
- 15:58But one of them that we have re watched recently which was also
- 16:01released like 1995 I think was Gundam Wing which.
- 16:05I love. And I loved going back to it and
- 16:08I, I think this gave me the same kind of nostalgia as.
- 16:11It was die condom at the point of time.
- 16:13Yeah, yeah, it's. Good it.
- 16:17Is and also. But I'm not, we're not going to
- 16:20talk about that because that was not so good to revisit.
- 16:23I guess you guys were exposed to what we didn't have was Adult
- 16:26Swim. Yeah.
- 16:29Oh yeah. Yeah.
- 16:31We don't have that entirely. Can you not?
- 16:34Did you not watch like Robot Chicken and stuff?
- 16:37I did on the Internet, but not on the telly on the TV.
- 16:40Archer. Archer, Yeah, I think Archer was
- 16:43one of the shows which came on adults one.
- 16:46Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 16:47Oh, I love Sofia Sealab 2021 and all that sort of stuff.
- 16:53Right. Yeah, exactly.
- 16:57Fab. So, yeah.
- 16:58Favorite characters? Chris, what about you?
- 17:00Did you have a? So it's it's weird because I do
- 17:05like watching the scientist and I can't remember his name.
- 17:11Do you know the the dad who's the incompetent detective who
- 17:14kind of gets steered by Kordan? I love watching them.
- 17:19OK, yeah, yeah. Kogoro Mori.
- 17:21Yes, sorry. Yeah, Kogoro I love, I love
- 17:25watching them as characters, but I think my favorite one will be
- 17:29Kordan because he's he's he is the most.
- 17:32He has. His own like.
- 17:35He has his. Downfalls with like, he's a kid,
- 17:38he has to get around in inventive ways because they say,
- 17:40Oh yeah, I've solved this murder.
- 17:42I know who it is, but no one believers because I have a
- 17:44literal child wondering a crime scene.
- 17:47So I've got to figure out a better way of doing it.
- 17:50And it's so inventive. Isn't it the third episode where
- 17:53he chooks an ashtray at someone's head and then knocks
- 17:56them out and then he speaks for them?
- 18:00Yeah, yeah, it's lovely. I'd say that after, like we
- 18:06said, I love it when he chucks an ashtray.
- 18:08But it is fun. It is really funny.
- 18:09And I think the thing I really liked about it is just when you
- 18:12there's been this like horrible murder and there's all this
- 18:14tension, something really silly will happen.
- 18:17And it kind of just stops it from getting to be like a really
- 18:21dark, heavy series. It actually keeps it in the kind
- 18:24of like very fun, energetic place.
- 18:27Like, I think you could watch this with like young, quite
- 18:29young kids and it wouldn't be. Scary to them at all.
- 18:33But yeah, that's the best part, I guess.
- 18:35I think. I mean, it's not too graphic.
- 18:37I mean for, you know, watching with the family, especially if
- 18:41you have a kid around. That that's what I was thinking
- 18:43because even the, the first episode where there's a roller
- 18:46coaster murder, someone gets decapitated and there's, I mean,
- 18:52it, it doesn't show you it's happening.
- 18:54It shows you in flashes and then it shows you a decapitated body
- 18:57and where they've just got like a no head, obviously and there's
- 19:02blood there. But I'm sure to get around the,
- 19:05the age limit or like the sensors that make the blood a
- 19:09different colour. It was the one that I watched
- 19:13and don't really register it as a decapitation.
- 19:16You just say, oh, there's been another murder, right?
- 19:19On Netflix, it's pretty Corey. I mean it was red.
- 19:24Yeah, it's it's it's really interesting because there are,
- 19:27this is something that happens with 90s anime a lot in that
- 19:31there was a lot of different censorship laws for different
- 19:34countries. And so you notice they're like
- 19:37the animators would change certain scenes and
- 19:41transformation scenes to fit different countries that they
- 19:45were like exporting the anime to.
- 19:48And they did it the same. They did it the same with like
- 19:53so like a really famous version of it is where they do it with
- 19:56the storylines as well. So in America, in order to keep
- 20:00Sailor Moon like rated for young children, two of the characters
- 20:05are supposed to be like girlfriends and they change it
- 20:08to cousins. But then it makes it really
- 20:11weird because the only thing they do is change the the fact
- 20:15that they're like romantic into being cousins.
- 20:18But then they. Don't change any of the.
- 20:19Dialogue and so these cousins are just very.
- 20:23I think they do the same thing. I think they do the same thing
- 20:26with Yeah. I think there's another anime
- 20:29called Card Captor Sakura. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 20:34So it's, it's and it is, it is kind of fascinating when you
- 20:38notice those differences when you're watching some, because
- 20:41some, I'm a big like I tend to watch stuff in dubs.
- 20:45And then when you go back and watch the Subs later, you're
- 20:47like, oh, that's very different. There's one in Dragon Ball Z
- 20:53with hell, Hell town I think. Do you want to have the IT?
- 20:59I can't remember what the changes to now, but it's a say
- 21:02in hell they say something else, the eternal.
- 21:06For. Losers or something?
- 21:09Oh yeah, I guess that's when after the Sense saga or
- 21:13something and before the boost starts, I guess.
- 21:18Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Fun fact, up until 2013 in
- 21:24India, we used to have on censored TV.
- 21:26I mean, like shows like Supernatural, like we had the
- 21:30literally like the deep decapitating scenes, blood and
- 21:33gore of the show going on. And then I think in 2013, there
- 21:37was some new rule past. And then, yeah, all those scenes
- 21:41were like, censored out from TV. Yeah.
- 21:45And what's the point of watching American television if you're
- 21:48not going to see all that? Yeah.
- 21:51And there is something because it's because we have something
- 21:53over here called the watershed. So it used to be that you after
- 21:57a certain time of day was where you would get all of like the
- 22:00violent stuff. And also like, you know.
- 22:03Like the sexy stuff and and you'd have like a pre watershed
- 22:07version and then a post watershed version, yeah.
- 22:10And so like. Yeah, and even now on streaming
- 22:14services, there's still an option where you can like turn
- 22:16off all the swearing for. Stuff, right.
- 22:19So I remember as a kid, as a kid while watching Cartoon Network,
- 22:24I think by 9 PMI think it just ended.
- 22:28And then a channel called TNTTNT started and like that used to
- 22:32have all the American Western stuff going on and adult stuff
- 22:36going on and like, and you weren't supposed to watch beyond
- 22:39that. Yes, yeah, there was always a
- 22:42rule like you're not allowed to watch after this time.
- 22:44And it's like, yeah, but you'll find a way, kids find a way.
- 22:48Yeah. So in terms of like how you
- 22:55would want. So obviously we've watched the
- 22:57first 3 episodes for the purpose of this.
- 23:01What were some of the highlights in those first 3 episodes for?
- 23:05You my rights, OK, if I go it by go with it by episode wise.
- 23:11So the first episode, I think you know how Honan explains the
- 23:20how the murderer like the girl with the Pearl necklace kind of
- 23:23the murder in the first episode. I think that was the highlight
- 23:26of the first episode. Yeah.
- 23:28And along with that, how the drug was forced down his throat
- 23:32when he was, you know, knocked out.
- 23:34I mean, how do you force something down someone's throat
- 23:36when they are knocked out? That with two, with water?
- 23:39I mean, that's not explainable. You know, like, you know, like
- 23:44where you'll give dogs medication.
- 23:46Exactly. I mean, it's not a dissolvable
- 23:49tablet. This food has a capsule.
- 23:51And surely it'd be easier to inject?
- 23:55Exactly, they would have just finished him off and be done
- 23:58with it. Why test the new poison and then
- 24:01let's see if this person dies or not.
- 24:02They have to keep monitoring him.
- 24:04Like why go through all that hassle?
- 24:05I mean, that would have ended the show for us, but.
- 24:08You know, yeah, yeah. It would be very, very short.
- 24:10We wouldn't have 1000 in plus episodes.
- 24:13Yeah. It's weird.
- 24:15How no one's. Decided to test it as well
- 24:17before taking it on the field. So this little case with these
- 24:23tablets on with experimental poisons and no one thought
- 24:26she'll try it in the lab before we give this to a guy.
- 24:32Let's just go straight straight in to give it to a guy.
- 24:37Oh yes. I kind of love.
- 24:39I kind of love that. I was willing to suspend my
- 24:42disbelief on that. But I agree.
- 24:45I really liked the bit. I I and I think this is a sign
- 24:48of a really good like murder mystery detective show.
- 24:52Is is the reveal the most exciting part of the show?
- 24:56Because it should be every time. I agree.
- 24:59Who who did the crime should be the most exciting bit, and I
- 25:02think Detective Conan nails it every time.
- 25:05Every time and second episode I would say it has.
- 25:09I think I had two. It had two highlights. 1st when
- 25:12you know Shinichi was explaining that he is Shinichi to Doctor
- 25:16Aghasa. When and the last part of it, I
- 25:21think during the climax when Ran comes in and you know KO's the
- 25:26guy with karate. Oh yes.
- 25:33Yeah, yeah, yeah. And the third episode, I would
- 25:37say it's a very cheeky moment is like when, you know, the
- 25:41Japanese celebrity, like she turn up, turns up at Cobra's
- 25:46office and like Cobra's like come back another day.
- 25:50And then he realizes and then he rushes into the room and he
- 25:54changes into this tux with his, you know, rose hair.
- 25:58Like anything for you miss. Yeah, I, yeah, I, I agree with
- 26:07you. It has lots of lovely, like,
- 26:09very funny little sweet moments to it.
- 26:11I also really liked, weirdly, I really like the scenes where
- 26:14he's just like walking with his friends and talking things
- 26:17through and trying to like, adjust to be like his new life
- 26:23in a way. I actually found those like
- 26:25little slice of life moments really endearing.
- 26:29Right. Yeah, like I think it's.
- 26:33Like when he launches that kicks a football at someone instead of
- 26:37kicking them because he's like, Oh yes, I'm a child.
- 26:39I kind of put me weight behind the kick, so.
- 26:43That's that's when the gadgets come to use.
- 26:47That's when the gadgets come to use later on.
- 26:48Like I'm giving us big spoiler over here.
- 26:51Like he gets shoes, which are, you know, let's say designed by
- 26:57Professor Casa. And then I think you need to
- 26:59watch more before I say anything.
- 27:01Yeah, and I oh, sorry, go for it.
- 27:06No, I was just going to say I really want to watch your head
- 27:08with them with me, son. He's 5 and I think it's kind of
- 27:12appropriate for him because there's not.
- 27:14Any it is. It's more right I.
- 27:16Means than. Violence or goal?
- 27:19Yeah, yeah. Right.
- 27:21It'll be pretty entertaining for him because like it's a show
- 27:23full of kids. He might find it easy to relate
- 27:27to, even though he might not understand it at the moment.
- 27:30Sure, when he is, you know, growing up as a teenager or
- 27:33young adolescent, he would probably, you know, just one day
- 27:36log into Crunchyroll or Netflix for that matter.
- 27:39And then why not give this another watch?
- 27:41It's like what's been happening to me over the years.
- 27:44It's like when I watched the things that were on air, I was
- 27:48pretty young. I was like, let's say in my
- 27:50early 20s, late 20s and now. And I'm certain things which I
- 27:56watched them for the second or third time, like, OK, so this is
- 28:00the thing. Like, this is how everything,
- 28:03you know, connects to everything.
- 28:04And like, then I think when the realization hits, it's like even
- 28:08mind blown. Yeah.
- 28:11Yeah. And I think.
- 28:13I think. I think it'll be all.
- 28:14Right. For your son, I think the only
- 28:16thing you need to worry about is, is it going to inspire him
- 28:18to commit crimes? Oh yeah.
- 28:21Maybe solve? Crimes.
- 28:23And but like. Hopefully it'll be the opposite.
- 28:25Yeah, so there is this. Show in India called.
- 28:30CID Yeah. So in India, there's this show
- 28:35called. CID is the live action show but
- 28:37the crime investigation department of the police and
- 28:41they have solved many crimes that has been going on for like
- 28:4520-3 years and or more 20 years at least.
- 28:48And like criminals in India, like they have been getting
- 28:53inspired by these and committing crimes in real life.
- 28:57I wonder if anyone's watched Detective Conan and genuinely
- 29:01obviously not your son Chris. Your son is a lovely young man
- 29:04who did not hurt a family. 4 episodes in.
- 29:07He'll outsmart. Me, I love his dream.
- 29:12I love his. Logic all.
- 29:13I love his logic all together. Turning the window bumblebee.
- 29:19He'd probably turn you into a child so that you guys can play
- 29:22more. That would be the extent of Finn
- 29:24these crimes or your son's crime.
- 29:27Sorry. Feel free to bleep his name.
- 29:33But I do wonder if anyone like if anyone's ever watched
- 29:36Detective Conan and gone. Do you know what I could use a
- 29:39roller coaster to decapitate someone.
- 29:44OK. Push it downstairs.
- 29:47But let's. Say I sorry, please go on.
- 29:50Oh no sorry. Oh no, you.
- 29:52Were you about to tell us how you would murder someone if you
- 29:54were going to? No, No, no, no, no.
- 29:56No, I would so I. Would use it for.
- 29:59Academic purposes for that matter, for like, for example, I
- 30:02remember, OK, this is very a bit too personal.
- 30:06Like for one of my courses in university, I remember like they
- 30:10had asked us for a course to, you know, come up with a Crime
- 30:13Story. And then I was like thinking
- 30:16like what innovative time story that I can write and like, it
- 30:20can't be something realistic, something whatever.
- 30:23And then I really, I stumbled upon some episode of Detective
- 30:26Con and like, why not write it in my own words?
- 30:28Why not really? Why?
- 30:30Not create everything like. Your own universe, but the story
- 30:33would be intact. And then I did.
- 30:37And then I did and. Then your only crime was.
- 30:40Plagiarism. It's fine.
- 30:42It was plagiarism. I mean, the story was
- 30:45plagiarized but. Yeah, I mean.
- 30:49I it was good enough to get a passing match, so yeah, that's
- 30:53fine. And you?
- 30:54Know, Mark Twain said. Good authors are inspired.
- 30:58Great authors steal. So if Mark Twain said.
- 31:02That we'll know that quote, but we'll keep that.
- 31:04Yeah, it's a good one. I think he probably.
- 31:06Stole it from someone else so yeah.
- 31:12So did you think so after watch having watched 3 episodes?
- 31:15Obviously we know Arjun, you're on like season 8.
- 31:20So we know that you would watch more than three episodes.
- 31:23Chris, would you watch past three episodes?
- 31:25Are you going to be like slowly feeding, feeding this into your
- 31:29anime a yam because. It's.
- 31:34I don't think. It's a one that you can kind of
- 31:37switch off and put on the background.
- 31:38You have to actually watch it, but oh, yes, yeah.
- 31:42Because like, it's, it's the little things where even like in
- 31:46episode 3, there was a guy that killed himself and you're like,
- 31:51how did he come to that conclusion?
- 31:52You found him with a knife in his back.
- 31:54And he's. Oh, yeah.
- 31:55It's this old trick, this famous trick where you put it in an ice
- 31:59block. I can tell from the dent in the
- 32:01floor and this and blahdy blah. And it's just like, I would
- 32:04never have thought of that at the start of the episode or when
- 32:07you discovered the body. All right.
- 32:10But yeah, it's interesting. It's not a switch off anime, but
- 32:13it's like a yeah, that's pretty cool.
- 32:17I. Also think that that was another
- 32:19thing that I really liked about the series and is I also think a
- 32:22really good mark of good murder mystery detective shows, which
- 32:27is the thing that me and my mum watched a lot together when we
- 32:31were living together. Me and my mum would watch
- 32:33basically murder mysteries like NCIS and all the Agatha
- 32:36Christie's and Sherlock Holmes and stuff.
- 32:40But it's the, the good ones are the ones where they give you all
- 32:42the clues, but you still can't work it out until the end.
- 32:46And in Detective Conan, all the clues are there, but you just
- 32:49feel like an idiot because you can't put them together.
- 32:52And then you watch it again and you're like, I could have
- 32:55figured it out if I was as smart as Detective Conan.
- 32:58And that's, I think, really good writing because they're not like
- 33:00withholding something so that you can't work it out.
- 33:04It's just that the problem is so often unique and strange that
- 33:08you don't think to put the clues together in a certain way.
- 33:11And I loved that, right? So.
- 33:14If I may point out in that in that incident, like let's say if
- 33:19I don't know if it's available, that option will be that version
- 33:23is shown on Crunchyroll on Netflix.
- 33:26It is shown on Netflix for that matter, like at the end of each
- 33:29episode, like for the next episode, they said like Conan's
- 33:33next hint, ice lock or let's say blood stain or something.
- 33:38And then it gives you the, you know, motivation to think, OK,
- 33:42this has something to do with this.
- 33:44Then it gets you to, you know, and Conan always appears like
- 33:48challenge, I challenge you or challenge me in the next episode
- 33:50or something like that. And like, OK, now you're
- 33:53talking, now you have some motivation.
- 33:58Yeah, Yeah. And also you.
- 33:59Feel like you feel like you're solving the crime with detective
- 34:02Conan, which I think is really lovely way to engage your
- 34:06audience and and brave as a writer because if you don't have
- 34:10a clever solution, it's going to be worked out really quickly.
- 34:13So it's kind of like, I think it's like like the writers room
- 34:18for Detective Conan are just going, do you know what?
- 34:21Have a go if you think you're hard enough.
- 34:24And it's like fair play to them. I think it's really ballsy and I
- 34:28love that. Yeah, see, I, I never watched
- 34:32the after the closing, after the credits because.
- 34:37I never want to see. A preview of the next episode
- 34:39because see, I I don't want to take movie trailers very much as
- 34:42well because I don't know, I don't want.
- 34:45To know what's going to. Happen just in case they give
- 34:48you too much. You can you can do that.
- 34:53I mean, even was the teaser instead of the traitor.
- 34:58I mean, that's how it's done in India.
- 35:00Like there is a teaser, then after a while in the trailer,
- 35:04then comes the movie. And like, if you was a teaser,
- 35:07like it gets you going enough. Like, OK, if I don't want too
- 35:10many spoilers, I won't watch the trailer.
- 35:13But yeah, I mean, but in the end of the end of each episode of
- 35:17Detective Conan, like you don't have a choice.
- 35:19Like if you, if you, you know, want to get into the nostalgia
- 35:23or something of hearing the entire ending thread, it's the
- 35:26the song. And then by the end of the song,
- 35:30like right after the song, they say that Conan's next hint is
- 35:32this and like, oh, you're done for.
- 35:35Yeah, yeah. Yeah, do you?
- 35:38That was another thing actually we didn't touch on, but I
- 35:40thought it was again and I think it's a hallmark of 90s anime
- 35:44soundtrack. The soundtrack in detected
- 35:47Conan. Absolutely.
- 35:49Amazing. And one of the things that you,
- 35:50because you, you mentioned the Hindi introduction.
- 35:54So I went and looked that up as well.
- 35:56And I was like, this is this is a tune.
- 35:59Yeah. Really good fun.
- 36:01So, and I kind of loved, yeah, the the music threw out of it
- 36:05was just really like great. That was just my that's all I
- 36:08had to say on it. What do?
- 36:10You guys think? Absolutely, I think.
- 36:14Oh please, go on. I was just going to say that.
- 36:17I've never I've heard the English 1, yet I've heard the
- 36:21Japanese one. I've heard the English.
- 36:22Version, Japanese version and the Hindi version.
- 36:24So Hindi versions are always more catchy than the English I
- 36:29was. By far I think it was more
- 36:32catchy than the Japanese and the English one.
- 36:34The Hindi version is like the one that I'd be adding to a
- 36:37playlist for sure, right? Yeah.
- 36:43And so, yeah, so. What?
- 36:46Yeah, about the soundtrack, which I was saying, I think it's
- 36:48very essential to any kind of show.
- 36:50I mean, even to ATV series or to a movie for that matter.
- 36:55Like if the soundtrack isn't good, I mean people won't be,
- 36:58you know, attracted to it in the first place.
- 37:00And like, especially to anime, I mean, if it identifies the pop
- 37:05culture of it, something, you know, entirely original of its
- 37:08own and and it's catchy for that matter, then all the more
- 37:11reasonable people will watch it. Like, let's say people still
- 37:14remember like Rock the dragon tune from Dragon Ball Z and he
- 37:17it's still a old time thing. Or like, let's say the tone from
- 37:21Cowboy Bebop. And like Naruto, Naruto has so
- 37:24many openings, so many Closings. I mean like Bluebird or let's
- 37:29say Go or like those ones, like you actually sit through the
- 37:33entire thing instead of, you know, let's skip to the end of
- 37:36it. Naruto has got so many good.
- 37:40Sorry, we're going to go down a Naruto hole now because Chris
- 37:44and I did that recent did Naruto recently on the podcast and both
- 37:49of us the IT was the the soundtrack for both of us was
- 37:52like, Oh my God, instant nostalgia.
- 37:55And we were like sending my ringtone different.
- 37:57Opening titles, yeah. There's so so the the Bluebird.
- 38:00The instrumental version of Bluebird is my ringtone for my
- 38:03iPhone. Yeah, nice.
- 38:06It's for me as well. It's the closing, the closing
- 38:09song right in the, like, early series because that is a song
- 38:14that I sat down. And like, I think I've already
- 38:17told this story on the podcast, so I won't go into, like, loads
- 38:20of detail, but I basically like sat down and tried to learn it
- 38:22myself in the hopes that it would impress people.
- 38:25And I think I'm the only one who enjoyed it, but I still had a
- 38:27good time. Yeah.
- 38:34So in terms of looking back from 2025, right, how do you feel?
- 38:43How do you feel this holds up? We've talked a bit.
- 38:45We said yeah, it the animation style changes through the series
- 38:50and I think you can see a difference from the early to the
- 38:52later series, right? So I think that.
- 38:56Has got to do with every anime, for that matter, which continues
- 38:59for that long. Yeah, yeah.
- 39:01Yeah, for sure, even. I was talking to.
- 39:06Lee and Jake about even One Piece because that was started
- 39:09in 2000 and odd and I was starting from scratch and I'm
- 39:14looking at the first episode to clips of new episodes and it's
- 39:18just like night and day again. So it always progresses, I
- 39:21think, with the time and popularity.
- 39:25Yeah, and I thought. The animation, obviously it's it
- 39:27is 90s anime, so you can tell that it isn't modern.
- 39:31What I thought holds up very well though is like,
- 39:33thematically story wise, the story doesn't feel that old.
- 39:37I feel like you could have exactly the same script with
- 39:41updated anime and you would never know that it was
- 39:43originally released in 1996. And I thought that was a mark of
- 39:46a classic, right? Yeah, exactly.
- 39:49But you don't. With pixel Poly is just two HD
- 39:53right now. It's like, I mean more graphics
- 39:58more, you know, high definition of everything.
- 40:00Like when it started, like it was like, you know, kind of the
- 40:044th or the 5th draft of the original drawings, which you
- 40:07know, went into play. And but by now it's like, I
- 40:10don't know, like the 30th draft or something.
- 40:12And like every everything is more detailed and everything.
- 40:15And you know, technology has improved so much.
- 40:19And then obviously people don't want to fall behind unless the
- 40:22enemy you know is. Basically based on the olden
- 40:25times like then or it has that kind of a vibe, like it gives up
- 40:29like the 70s vibe or 90s vibe and you want it to be, you know,
- 40:33purposely want it to be that way.
- 40:36Yeah. And I always.
- 40:37Think that the the one of the telling things is the screen
- 40:41composition. So like when you see something
- 40:43that's in like a lovely square, you think I know the type of
- 40:47telly that this would have been shown on and the telly would
- 40:49have been enormous, but the screen wouldn't have been that
- 40:51big and it'd been very deep. Oh yes.
- 40:55And there is like. Yeah, yeah.
- 40:58And this this. Does have that kind of like
- 40:59square nostalgia framing to it. Yeah.
- 41:03Because the belly used to be like.
- 41:04You know, like a cuboid or something.
- 41:07And now it's just an LED screen, fat screen.
- 41:09Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I can always tell when I
- 41:13try to. Find pictures for the thumbnail,
- 41:16what resolution that we mostly have.
- 41:17And this when you were looking for the original pictures, it's
- 41:21like it's very small. Bad resolution.
- 41:24Yeah, yeah. Oh.
- 41:24Yes, it was it. Was the same for.
- 41:26Naruto as well to be fair. I agree like.
- 41:30Once it made the ship, you know, shift to Shepherd and you could
- 41:33see the difference. Yeah, definitely.
- 41:36Very much. Very much for sure.
- 41:40And now even Boruto. For that matter, like if you
- 41:43guys have watched Boruto at all, like it's completely different.
- 41:46I mean, I hate the animation that you know, the change that
- 41:50has gone like you expected, you know, Naruto to be more cool
- 41:52looking. You expecting the animation to
- 41:54be like way more superior or something?
- 41:57Like anything Bordo has kind of, you know, messed up right?
- 42:02So I haven't seen Borado, mainly because it will make me feel
- 42:06really old because I've grew up with Naruto Shippuden as well.
- 42:10And you can't. You can't.
- 42:12Watch that plucky young orphan turn into a dad.
- 42:15It's too. It's too real.
- 42:17Yeah. And fun fact.
- 42:19Masashi Kishimoto, like you know, the creator of Naruto,
- 42:22like he has said that Boruto isn't Canon, right?
- 42:27Yeah. So.
- 42:29That's another reason why I won't watch it.
- 42:33That's that's the. Cool, nerdy reason not to watch
- 42:35it, but that's not the real reason you're not watching it is
- 42:38because you're. You're upset that he's.
- 42:41Doesn't have enough enough back pain to really be a dad.
- 42:45Yeah, yeah, yeah. Imagine after.
- 42:49His life of. Acrobatics and ninja Ness.
- 42:52I mean, yeah. I mean, but he the you know, he,
- 42:57if you if you watch border somehow, like you find like if
- 43:00now that he is the, you know, head of the village, he is the
- 43:03Kage. And you know, he has so many
- 43:07duties to manage. Like he is needs to be at
- 43:11different places at different points of time.
- 43:12So he there are just multiple shadow clones of him and like
- 43:16and critical moments like, you know, when the chakra runs out,
- 43:19they the shadow clones disappear and then some mishap happened
- 43:22and then border just gets so pissed off and like that Why
- 43:25can't you be in person? And also.
- 43:29Who hasn't wanted to be able to split themselves in two just to
- 43:33accomplish stuff in the day? I think that's very relatable.
- 43:38Yeah. It's like, you know?
- 43:40The time turn from Harry Potter, Yeah.
- 43:43Or the other, the other skill that I'm always like if if I
- 43:46could have a superpower just over, it's always teleportation
- 43:49because there's so much time between like when you're just
- 43:52going from point A to B and I just want to be there and get
- 43:54stuff done rather than have to like do the bouncing around
- 43:58that's like. You know, there's this another
- 44:01anime called Doraemon. I mean, you guys have obviously
- 44:03heard about it. There's this, there is this
- 44:06gadget called Anywhere Door. And like, that door just opens
- 44:10into another place on the earth and like, oh, you're this there.
- 44:14Yeah. Or like in Hal's Moving Castle,
- 44:17when you've got Hal's door that he could just go to a yes, yeah.
- 44:20Yeah. Super.
- 44:25I think that's it. There's time for our closing
- 44:27thoughts. So like obviously we all really
- 44:30loved this and we definitely would be recommending this as a
- 44:33go and go and oh, I have a huge list.
- 44:35With me I have a huge list with me which you guys would love.
- 44:40Well, actually I, I haven't told Chris this.
- 44:44I was going to say. So next we we've got a few
- 44:48things scheduled for December, but in January at the moment, we
- 44:53haven't decided what we're going to be doing.
- 44:54So this episode is going to be airing in December and then
- 44:57January. We don't know what we're going
- 44:58to be doing. And I was going to ask you for a
- 45:00recommendation on the fly of like an anime that you think we
- 45:04should we should check out in the new year.
- 45:07What do you think? Hey.
- 45:10I have plenty, but it depends on the genre.
- 45:12Like if you're looking for something comedic, I would say
- 45:17there's this one particularly called Kochikame.
- 45:20And it's it's about this the regular activities of a police
- 45:24station in Japan and then especially centered around this
- 45:28cop is rented around this cop who is, you know, very money
- 45:32minded and he finds different ways to make money on the side.
- 45:39Oh, OK. That sounds like fun.
- 45:40Could you call me? Yeah, And there's Shenzhen.
- 45:44There is Shenzhen, but then Shenzhen is like, you know, a
- 45:47Japanese version of, let's say, Peppa Pig.
- 45:49It teaches the wrong stuff to kids.
- 45:57When you mentioned Shin Chan at the start of this I was like, I
- 45:59haven't heard that name for years.
- 46:01I used to love watching that on Fox Kids I.
- 46:05So I also used to watch Shin Chan as a child and.
- 46:08And I recently rewatched it thinking, oh, maybe this could
- 46:11be something that it's fun to like, give me like a thing of
- 46:15nostalgia. And I was like, oh, no, this is
- 46:17teaching 100% teaching kids the absolute worst, worst stuff.
- 46:22It's so rude, but quite fun. But yeah.
- 46:26Pochekam, I think it's very underrated.
- 46:28Yeah, Pochekam is very underrated.
- 46:29I think that deserves a watch. OK, great.
- 46:32That's going on the list. Thank you so much, Arjun.
- 46:36Any last thoughts before we before we say goodbye?
- 46:41I'm just glad that you guys have called me on the show and I
- 46:45would be happy to return sometime.
- 46:48Oh, definitely love to have you back, Chris.
- 46:51You looked like you were about to say something.
- 46:53Yeah, I just want to thank. Arjun because I would never have
- 46:56picked this up. And if I if I'd stumbled upon it
- 46:59and I'd thought that it was $1000 episodes, it would have
- 47:02been intimidating. So I probably wouldn't have
- 47:04stopped it. And it's kind of like One Piece.
- 47:07It's took us so long to start this because of the amount of
- 47:12episodes. And yeah, I think it is.
- 47:15There's a reason why there's that many episodes as good.
- 47:17And thanks for introducing to us.
- 47:19Hopefully I'll be not watching with.
- 47:20My son soon. I'm so very happy.
- 47:24You guys decided to start watching this and I would be
- 47:26more happy if you guys would decide to continue watching it
- 47:30because it definitely needs watching past three episodes I.
- 47:35I definitely will be watching past it because I really
- 47:38genuinely enjoyed it and it was just like a good it's a really
- 47:41good murder mystery of an anime series.
- 47:43That's right. And I.
- 47:45Just wanted to you know, you know how Nadia not works is like
- 47:49how I send in reviews, you know, every two weeks or something and
- 47:53they decide to publish it. Like can something be done for
- 47:56the anime page? Like can I start reviewing
- 47:58animes which needs more watch and then you could you know,
- 48:00post reviews about it or something like that?
- 48:02100% please do. Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 48:06We would love that. I mean, we probably will use
- 48:08those to then watch anime on Anime Club.
- 48:11So Right, Right, right, right. Like Mark Twain said, right.
- 48:20But it was really great. So much, yeah.
- 48:22Yeah, very much. It'd be great.
- 48:23Please, like if, if you that's something you want to do and
- 48:25that's, that's always an open call to other people as well.
- 48:28And I would like to promote. This yeah of.
- 48:31Course, and I would. You know, love to contribute on
- 48:33a global scale. I mean, I would love to have the
- 48:36anime scale gain more recognition across the world.
- 48:39And like does not be limited to the UK for that matter.
- 48:43Absolutely. Not, no.
- 48:45No way. Oh, thank you so much, Arjun.
- 48:47Honestly, it's been an absolute honour having you with us.
- 48:50Thank you very much. Obviously, this is where I do
- 48:52the normal thing, where I'm like, like, comment, subscribe.
- 48:55If you've also got some good anime for the new year that you
- 48:59will be good for us to watch, Chris and I, or with friends,
- 49:04then please leave us a comment down below.
- 49:07And in the meantime, we'll yeah, have a good December and we will
- 49:11see you live again in January. Bye everyone.
- 49:15Bye. Awkwardly.
- 49:16Wave.
