- 0:05(Transcribed by TurboScribe.ai. Go Unlimited to remove this message.) Hi, I'm Chris.
- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:12This is the final episode of our series,
- 0:15Gentle Witnesses, sharing the good news at work
- 0:18in a way that actually makes sense.
- 0:21And we're actually going to have a shorter
- 0:22teaching time today, just about eight minutes of
- 0:25teaching, and then after that I'm going to
- 0:27share a little bit more detail about our
- 0:30online course, also called Finding God at Work,
- 0:32which you can find at FindingGodAtWork.org.
- 0:34So if you're interested in hearing more about
- 0:36the course, you can stay tuned after my
- 0:38prayer at the end of the teaching.
- 0:40But first here's today's episode.
- 0:46We've looked at the good news from a
- 0:48lot of different angles in this series, talked
- 0:50about how we can share it in multiple
- 0:52different ways.
- 0:54But one thing we haven't talked a ton
- 0:55about is the idea of beauty and the
- 0:58good news as it relates to beauty.
- 1:01So I want to do some Bible work
- 1:03on that as just kind of a final
- 1:05image to rest on it as we think
- 1:08about what it means to share the good
- 1:09news.
- 1:10There's beautiful language, poetic language in the New
- 1:13Testament, that I think can guide us, guide
- 1:15our hearts and our minds and our habits
- 1:17as we think about what it means to
- 1:19share the good news with others.
- 1:21So let's look at 2 Corinthians 4, starting
- 1:23in verse 4.
- 1:26The God of this world has blinded the
- 1:28minds of unbelievers to keep them from seeing
- 1:30the light of the gospel of the glory
- 1:32of Christ, who is the image of God.
- 1:35For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but
- 1:37Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your
- 1:40servants for Jesus' sake.
- 1:42For God who said, let light shine out
- 1:44of darkness, has shone in our hearts to
- 1:47give the light of the knowledge of the
- 1:49glory of God in the face of Jesus
- 1:52Christ.
- 1:53That's a really rich, dense passage.
- 1:56If you're like me and you normally listen
- 1:58to podcasts when you're in the car, you
- 2:00never have a chance to see the text
- 2:01that goes along with the podcast you're listening
- 2:03to.
- 2:04And so I'm going to try and repeat
- 2:05key phrases here in a way that's helpful.
- 2:09But the central phrase here for our discussion
- 2:11is seeing the light of the gospel of
- 2:15the glory of Christ, seeing the light of
- 2:19the gospel of the glory of Christ.
- 2:23This is using the word glory, which is
- 2:25closely related to the idea of beauty.
- 2:28Glory gives an image of God shining forth
- 2:31the light of God, the transcendent, inexpressible Godness
- 2:37of God.
- 2:38That's God's glory.
- 2:41And this says that the good news, the
- 2:43gospel, the good news is the good news
- 2:47of the glory of Christ.
- 2:50It's like not seeing the light of the
- 2:52gospel of the glory of Christ.
- 2:55The good news at the end of the
- 2:56day is just how glorious Jesus is.
- 3:01If you see Jesus for who he really
- 3:03is, if you see just how beautiful Jesus
- 3:06is, that's the good news.
- 3:08That's the whole thing.
- 3:10It's the good news of the glory of
- 3:12Christ.
- 3:14Now, how can that be?
- 3:15How can it be that if you just
- 3:16see how beautiful Jesus is, you get everything?
- 3:19Well, if you think about all these different
- 3:20aspects of the good news we've talked about,
- 3:23healing, communion with God, deliverance, all these different
- 3:27metaphors that scripture uses, all of them rest
- 3:29on the idea that God is good and
- 3:32that you can connect with God through Jesus
- 3:34Christ.
- 3:35It's as you put your faith in Jesus
- 3:36that you connect with the God who really
- 3:39is good.
- 3:40If God somehow is not good, or if
- 3:42you can't really get to God by putting
- 3:44your faith in Jesus, then none of this
- 3:46works.
- 3:47But if God really is good, and if
- 3:49his goodness is expressed fully in Jesus Christ
- 3:52and is therefore available to us when we
- 3:54put our faith in Jesus Christ, then it
- 3:56all works.
- 3:57Then it's possible to enter into life in
- 4:00the kingdom of this good God.
- 4:02God is good, God is beautiful, and we
- 4:05see God's goodness and beauty, God's glory in
- 4:09the face of Jesus Christ.
- 4:11That's what the end of this passage says.
- 4:13It says, for God who said, let light
- 4:15shine out of darkness has shown in our
- 4:18hearts to give the light of the knowledge
- 4:22of the glory of God in the face
- 4:25of Jesus Christ.
- 4:27In other words, we see just how good
- 4:31and beautiful God is when we see the
- 4:34face of Jesus.
- 4:37That is our good news.
- 4:41And so then when we think about sharing
- 4:43the good news with other people, with our
- 4:45friends in the workplace, which has been our
- 4:47primary focus in this series, we think about
- 4:49the first part of this passage, verse four,
- 4:51where it says, the God of this world
- 4:53has blinded the minds of unbelievers to keep
- 4:56them from seeing the light of the gospel
- 4:59of the glory of Christ, who is the
- 5:01image of God.
- 5:03When it says the God of this world,
- 5:04this is poetic language, it actually means the
- 5:06enemy, sometimes referred to as the devil, this
- 5:09quasi-personal spiritual force of wickedness that rebels
- 5:12against God and shows up and attempts Jesus
- 5:16defeated in the book of Revelation and conflict
- 5:19with the archangel Michael.
- 5:21The dragon is how he's represented the serpent
- 5:23in the book of Genesis.
- 5:25All these different ways of referring to this
- 5:28entity of evil who has a kind of
- 5:31personhood.
- 5:32And it says that God, that lowercase G
- 5:35God, that God has blinded the minds of
- 5:38unbelievers.
- 5:40So that is all that it means to
- 5:43be an unbeliever.
- 5:44It's to be mind blind about how beautiful
- 5:47Jesus is.
- 5:48If you see how beautiful Jesus is, you
- 5:51will put your confidence in him.
- 5:53That's how it works.
- 5:54But if you cannot see how good Jesus
- 5:57is, you can't put your confidence in him
- 6:00because you don't trust him.
- 6:02And we talked about those steps of trust
- 6:03all the way through this process.
- 6:06So what we are praying for, what we
- 6:08are praying for, whenever we're building a friendship
- 6:10with someone, whenever we have any conversation where
- 6:12there's an opportunity for us to speak about
- 6:14the kingdom of God or to share the
- 6:15good news in some way, we are praying
- 6:17that God would open their eyes to see
- 6:21just how good and beautiful Jesus is.
- 6:24That's what we're praying for.
- 6:25That's our goal in evangelism.
- 6:28Just that people would get another glimpse, get
- 6:31a little bit of a clear picture of
- 6:32how good and beautiful Jesus is.
- 6:37I love how Timothy Keller puts this.
- 6:39This is in one of his guides about
- 6:40how to have these conversations.
- 6:41And he's talking about how we might get
- 6:43into intellectual arguments.
- 6:45He says this, there's really no reason for
- 6:48me to get out the guns on the
- 6:49evidence for the resurrection, which is trying to
- 6:51show that Christianity is true if they don't
- 6:54want it to be true.
- 6:56But if I get them to want it,
- 6:58if they get to the place of saying,
- 6:59gee, wouldn't it be great if that was
- 7:01true, but is it, then I can do
- 7:04my apologetics.
- 7:06My apologetics just means that kind of intellectual
- 7:08reasoning pursuit of understanding faith questions.
- 7:11So he's saying that we shouldn't even start
- 7:13by having this argument about intellectual things.
- 7:15We should start by stoking people's desire for
- 7:18Jesus.
- 7:19If they get to the point when they
- 7:21want to believe that Christianity is true, then
- 7:25we can talk about other things.
- 7:27And I would say that that's helping people
- 7:29get to the point of seeing how beautiful
- 7:32Jesus is.
- 7:33If you see how beautiful Jesus is, you
- 7:35want Christianity to be true.
- 7:37If you see how beautiful Jesus is, you
- 7:39want to follow him.
- 7:40If you see how beautiful Jesus is, you
- 7:42want to live in the kingdom of God.
- 7:45So that's what we're doing.
- 7:46We're coming alongside people.
- 7:48We're praying for God to open their eyes
- 7:49and we're trying in as creative and relational
- 7:52and healthy ways as we possibly can do
- 7:55to show them what Jesus is like, to
- 7:57show them how beautiful he is.
- 8:00Evangelism is no more and no less than
- 8:02that.
- 8:05Lord Jesus, we see you.
- 8:08Thank you.
- 8:10Thank you for making the goodness and the
- 8:13beauty of God, the glory of God visible
- 8:16in your face.
- 8:19Show us how to come alongside our friends.
- 8:22Show us how to point out just another
- 8:25little bit of your beauty and open their
- 8:28eyes to see you.
- 8:30Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 8:32do our work with you.
- 8:34Amen.
- 8:41Since this was a shorter teaching episode, we're
- 8:43going to take a few minutes now and
- 8:45go into more detail about the Finding God
- 8:47at Work online course.
- 8:50So if, if you're like, I'm here for
- 8:52the podcast, Chris, I don't need to listen
- 8:54to anything about the online course, then we
- 8:56can call it a rap on this episode
- 8:58for you, but if you're intrigued by the
- 8:59idea of an online course, I just want
- 9:02to share a little bit of the how,
- 9:03what, when, where, why of the course, as
- 9:06you know, if you've been listening to this
- 9:08podcast for any length of time, I love
- 9:10teaching.
- 9:11I love crafting learning experiences, whether it's a
- 9:1410 minute podcast or a 10 minute podcast
- 9:17that sometimes becomes a 15 that sometimes becomes
- 9:19a 20 minute podcast.
- 9:20I love having the chance to get into
- 9:23it with real human beings who are listening,
- 9:26who are looking for ways to grow.
- 9:28And an online course provides a way to
- 9:30do that in even greater depth.
- 9:32So obviously the podcast is short and sweet,
- 9:34relatively speaking.
- 9:36The online course is a way to, to
- 9:38really dig into things, but it's still really
- 9:40modular.
- 9:41So it's an online video-based course.
- 9:44It's self-paced, so there's no synchronous requirement,
- 9:47no schedule that you have to follow, totally
- 9:49up to you when you take the modules.
- 9:52It's divided into six chapters and each of
- 9:54those chapters has a few different micro lessons
- 9:57in it.
- 9:57So there's actually 50 micro lessons spread across
- 10:00those six chapters.
- 10:01And usually the videos are only like three
- 10:03or four minutes long.
- 10:04So it's actually really bite sized.
- 10:05If you've got a longer period of time,
- 10:07you can sit down, go through several micro
- 10:09lessons, maybe do a full chapter.
- 10:12That might take like half an hour.
- 10:13Or if you just got five, 10 minutes,
- 10:15you can just sit down, do one micro
- 10:16lesson, watch the video, do the associated activity.
- 10:19You're good to go.
- 10:20So by way of a preview, I just
- 10:22want to give an outline of those six
- 10:24chapters.
- 10:25So chapter one is the stories we're in
- 10:27at work.
- 10:28Chapter two is called faith, formation, and mission.
- 10:32Chapter three is justice, beauty, and healing at
- 10:35work.
- 10:36Chapter four is evangelism at work.
- 10:38Part one, chapter five is evangelism at work.
- 10:40Part two, and then chapter six is the
- 10:42future of work.
- 10:44So we'll be looking at everything from the
- 10:46cultural narratives, the influence, the way we think
- 10:48about work to the idea of vocation and
- 10:50calling how God calls us and how we
- 10:52wrestle with that when it feels like maybe
- 10:54our job doesn't exactly fit or mesh with
- 10:56our calling or our spiritual gifts, we'll be
- 10:59looking at the idea of mission and how
- 11:00God sends us into the world and how
- 11:02that can be expressed through justice, through beauty,
- 11:04through the ministry of healing.
- 11:05And through evangelism, and we'll be looking at
- 11:08how work continues into God's future.
- 11:11Work isn't just for this life.
- 11:13Work is part of our life with God
- 11:14and the new heavens and new earth.
- 11:16And that's actually something to look forward to.
- 11:19I've tried to draw on a mix of
- 11:21different thinkers and ideas and images.
- 11:24So like normal, I've got a few different
- 11:25kind of pop cultural references in there just
- 11:28to illustrate things.
- 11:29You know, so we're looking at Pixar movies
- 11:31and we're looking at comedians and we're looking
- 11:33at inspirational speakers, just like, Hey, what's in
- 11:35the cultural milieu that we can draw on.
- 11:37But then in terms of our substantive ideas,
- 11:39we're drawing on C.S. Lewis about our
- 11:41desire for God and how often we don't
- 11:44let that desire have its full sway, but
- 11:47it's actually good for us to lean into
- 11:48that desire.
- 11:50We're looking at a Christian philosopher named Greg
- 11:51A.
- 11:51Tannellshoff about rationalization and self-deception and how
- 11:54that gets the better of us.
- 11:56Of course, we're looking at Dallas Willard at
- 11:58everything.
- 11:59We're looking at Dallas Willard a lot like
- 12:00we always do, but about God's blessing, about
- 12:03how God meets us in less than ideal
- 12:04work circumstances, about how coming to a place
- 12:08where we see that God has done well
- 12:09by us influences the way that we do
- 12:12our life at work every day.
- 12:13We're drawing on scholar Christopher J.
- 12:15H.
- 12:15Wright and on justice practitioner John M.
- 12:18Perkins to talk about mission, drawing on Thomas
- 12:21Aquinas to talk about beauty, drawing on Dan
- 12:23Allender to talk about healing and N.T.
- 12:26Wright to talk about God's future and how
- 12:28our life at work continues into God's future.
- 12:31So I personally think it's really rich content
- 12:34largely because it's not stuff that I've made
- 12:36up.
- 12:36I've just gone hunting for some of the
- 12:38best thinkers and writers and speakers on these
- 12:40topics and tried to put their ideas together
- 12:43along with a heavy dose of scripture so
- 12:45that we can be inspired and instructed and
- 12:48refreshed by the power of God's word as
- 12:51we think about our life with God at
- 12:53work.
- 12:54So that's a little bit of just what
- 12:55the course is.
- 12:56Again, online, self-paced, six chapters, 50 microlessons.
- 13:01It's probably a total of about two and
- 13:03a half hours of video content across the
- 13:04whole course.
- 13:05It's on a platform where you can just
- 13:07kind of click through from module to module,
- 13:10pretty user friendly, hosted on the website, finding
- 13:13God at work.org.
- 13:14So that's, that's where you can find it.
- 13:16You might be asking, who is this course
- 13:18for?
- 13:19And I think it's for you.
- 13:20If you're listening to this podcast, that's a
- 13:22sign you already care about this idea of
- 13:24finding God at work.
- 13:25That it's possible to seek God and to
- 13:28find him in your everyday experience at work.
- 13:31More specifically, I believe that this course is
- 13:33relevant to people from a wide range of
- 13:36vocational and work experiences.
- 13:39And I know that because this is the
- 13:40online version of a course that we've run
- 13:42in person in a variety of churches in
- 13:45the Illinois Fox Valley area.
- 13:47And so you don't have to take it
- 13:49from me.
- 13:49I'm going to read some quotes here of
- 13:51different people in very different kinds of work
- 13:53and what they had to say about this
- 13:55course, the in-person version when they took
- 13:57it, but we're doing the same content for
- 13:59the online course should be a similar experience.
- 14:02So Lindsay, a gastrointestinal tech, she says that
- 14:04the course helped her to see quote, everywhere
- 14:07God sends me, there is an opportunity to
- 14:09represent him and to be formed for the
- 14:12next place I'm going.
- 14:14Maritza, who's a customer service and sales rep,
- 14:17she says, quote, the course helps me to
- 14:19stay connected to Jesus while at work and
- 14:22has led me to share Jesus at work.
- 14:24I was able to realize that the work
- 14:25I do is meaningful and God is in
- 14:27the mix with everything that I do in
- 14:29my daily life at work.
- 14:32Leah, who's a stay-at-home mom and
- 14:34a graduate student says, quote, I learned to
- 14:37find joy and motivation in my present work
- 14:39and to keep going into God's future work.
- 14:43Brian, who's a fleet coordinator says that the
- 14:46course quote, helped me to look at my
- 14:48job in a different way.
- 14:49It gives you tools and reminders to say,
- 14:51this is a great opportunity to bring the
- 14:54Lord into everything.
- 14:55There were times when I kept that separate
- 14:57and this allowed me to start to integrate
- 14:59my faith in the workplace.
- 15:01And then finally, Lynn, a grocery store associate
- 15:03said simply that the course quote, helped me
- 15:05to be more confident in presenting Christ.
- 15:09So I'm encouraged by this round of quotes.
- 15:13I hope you're encouraged that it doesn't matter
- 15:14whether you're working in at a grocery store
- 15:16or in a medical setting.
- 15:18We've had a doctor, we've had an architect,
- 15:20we've had a car mechanic, we've had a
- 15:22line worker, we've had pastors, we've had retirees,
- 15:26all of these different people still work, right?
- 15:29You still work when you're retired.
- 15:31You still work when you're a stay-at
- 15:32-home mom, regardless of the setting of your
- 15:34work, wherever you are applying effort to add
- 15:37value in your life, God can meet you
- 15:39there.
- 15:40That can be part of your life with
- 15:41God.
- 15:41It doesn't have to be separate from your
- 15:42life with God.
- 15:43And it's a context not only to come
- 15:46closer to Jesus, to be formed into his
- 15:47character, but also to participate in God's mission
- 15:50in the world, both in terms of how
- 15:52you live out your faith by doing your
- 15:54work well every day, being an emissary of
- 15:57God in the way of justice and beauty
- 15:59and peace and healing, and also in proclaiming
- 16:01the good news of Jesus Christ, as you
- 16:03have opportunity in ways that actually makes sense,
- 16:06like we just explored in this series.
- 16:09So that's a little bit of the who,
- 16:10anybody who's working and wants to go deeper
- 16:12in their life with God and their life
- 16:14at work being integrated, becoming one and the
- 16:17same.
- 16:18Here's the question.
- 16:20Why would you take this course?
- 16:22Well, you would take this course if you
- 16:24feel like it's worth it in terms of
- 16:26the time to listen to a few videos,
- 16:30watch a few videos, to do some associated
- 16:33activities.
- 16:33So in between the videos, there's like little
- 16:35assignments and ideas for you to work through.
- 16:37There's even a couple of chatbot exercises.
- 16:39I feel so fancy, artificial intelligence, chatbots, whoo.
- 16:43If you feel like, okay, making a little
- 16:45bit of time is going to be worth
- 16:46it for me to grow a little bit
- 16:49closer to Jesus in my daily work, then
- 16:51this course would make sense to you.
- 16:53Now, the other thing that it will cost
- 16:54besides time though, is money.
- 16:57So the course does cost money.
- 16:58Now that money doesn't go to me directly.
- 16:59That goes to Mission Central as a ministry.
- 17:02We're under a parent organization that has a
- 17:04501c3.
- 17:05If you have any questions about that, happy
- 17:07to be transparent with you and talk to
- 17:09you about the flow of the money, but
- 17:10the standard fee for the course is $75.
- 17:13There is a discount for podcast listeners.
- 17:16So if you enter the coupon code pod30,
- 17:19P-O-D 30, when you check out,
- 17:21you get 30% off.
- 17:22So that brings it down to got to
- 17:24do my math, like 5250, I think, double
- 17:26check my math.
- 17:28So still, you know, that's a chunk of
- 17:30change, right?
- 17:31You know, it's more than eating out at
- 17:33Burger King and McDonald's, even though that's pricier
- 17:35than it used to be in our inflationary
- 17:36environment.
- 17:37But again, you got to ask the question,
- 17:38okay, is it worth the 50 plus bucks
- 17:41to have this experience, to draw closer to
- 17:44Jesus, to be formed in mission, and to
- 17:47bring that to my everyday life at work?
- 17:48So that would be the why.
- 17:49If you think, yes, it would be worth
- 17:51the time and it would be worth the
- 17:52money, then yes, the course is for you.
- 17:55It would make sense.
- 17:56And then how, how do you take the
- 17:57course?
- 17:58You just go to findinggotatwork.org and there's
- 18:01all the information that you need right there.
- 18:03There's also our main website, missioncentral.church. Also
- 18:06links out to findinggotatwork.org with the information
- 18:10on the website.
- 18:11And if you have any questions, this podcast
- 18:14is not like topping any podcast charts.
- 18:16It's not so amazingly popular that I'm like
- 18:18some remote celebrity who's hard to get ahold
- 18:20of.
- 18:20You can just email me, chris at missioncentral
- 18:23.church, or if you've got my cell phone
- 18:26number, you can text me.
- 18:27I'm easy to get ahold of.
- 18:28We'd be happy to talk to you about
- 18:30any questions you have about the course.
- 18:32But my prayer is that this just helps
- 18:34us reach more people who wouldn't necessarily be
- 18:36able to take the course in person at
- 18:38one of the churches in the Fox Valley
- 18:40area.
- 18:41We're planning to still do the in-person
- 18:42courses at churches though.
- 18:43So that's an opportunity for those of you
- 18:45who may be local, but really excited about
- 18:48this.
- 18:48If you have any questions, let me know.
- 18:50And I'm praying that if this is a
- 18:51good fit for you, that it would really
- 18:52serve you and help you in your journey
- 18:55of finding God at work.
- 18:57Thanks so much for listening.
